The News & The Guide

Living Well with Buchanan County Health Center The hot and cold of picnics Summer is a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors. Pack up the family and head to a park for a picnic. Or, simply move your typical meal outdoors! While preparing and enjoying your food, be sure to handle it safely to avoid food borne illness. Keep the following safety tips in mind: •Keep hot foods hot. According to the Iowa State University Extension, keep hot foods above 140 degrees to avoid bacteria. Wrap hot items in towels or heat bags to keep them warm longer. •Keep cold foods cold. These items should be cooled to below 40 degrees to prevent harmful bacteria from rapidly growing. Pack cold foods in an insulated cooler with

plenty of ice. Pack the ice on ALL sides of the food. •Wash your hands! They are the most commonly used “utensilsâ€? in the preparing and consuming process whether you choose to enjoy your meal indoors or out. If you are not able to keep items cooled or heated to the appropriate temperatures, it is best to be safe and take foods that can be stored at room temperature. Great picnic foods that are easy to manage include: • peanut butter sandwiches • fresh fruit • whole grain crackers • trail mix

Manchester Ambassadors make the rounds

PAGE11

Submitted by Jack Klaus Manchester Chamber of Commerce

Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors made three visits in July. They stopped by Simply At Home B&B to visit Vic and Mary Kay Dannenbrink. In Mary Kay’s words: “We have dreamt of running a B&B for a long time and since we had two bedrooms we never used, we decided to open our home to guests in hopes they would always feel ‘Simply At Home.’ ” The Ambassadors also visited the newly remodeled Edward Jones office owned by Jim Fisher at 124 E Main St. Fisher, who has been with Edward Jones in Manchester for over 20 years. They toured the new facility, which is one block away from the previous office. The upstairs loft studio of Photography by Rebecca was another stop for the group, where they greeted photographer Rebecca Cohen. An Elkader native, she has brought 22 years experience in wedding and fashion photography to Manchester. Cohen’s wedding photos have been featured nationwide in over 30 magazines. After spending the last 20 years on the east coast she wanted to get back to small town living to raise her son Max. Advance grazing skills offered at workshop for new livestock farmers

Vegetable Garden Champion

Farmers can improve their grazing management through the Grassroots Grazing program, a new grazing systems education and networking program intended for young and beginning farmers and hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The second session of the east-central Iowa program will be held August 4 starting at 9:30 AM at the Ron and Eric Bossler farm just north of Van Horne. Bosslers have seeded a mix of cool season grasses and legumes on their 15-paddock pasture. Their 100-acre pasture supports about 90 cow pairs for the grazing season. The walk will start at the drive just north of their home at 6441 21st Ave. Dr., just north of Van Horne.

“Bosslers normally run four cow management groups on this farm so pasture management to ensure adequate rest is a big challenge, said Denise Schwab, beef specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “They use above-ground water lines to provide flexibility in their grazing management. They can strip graze or further sub-divide paddocks as needed. Other topics addressed on the tour will include managing grass height, impact of adequate rest, fencing and watering systems.
