WORLD Toll road rip-off...

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Following on from last week’s column about my weekend away, I forgot to tell you about my moan of the week! Because we were towing the caravan we went along the motorway from Marbella to Gibraltar. The normal cost of this is around €4 each way but this time it was €7. When asked why it was so expensive they said it was because it was Semana Santa and they could get more money out of people. I don't know if this happens all over Spain or if it was just on this stretch of road but what a rip off! As I have said in the past, we have been going through sorting out probate of my mother-in-law's will and her assets. We went over in November to open an account with Barclays Bank to gather all the money for distribution. Easy, you'd think? Nah! In the first place, unless you've had the account for 6 months or more you can only transfer a maximum of £5000 with charges of £25 a time, in the second place you can only transfer it “abroad” if you send them a letter which they then have to “process”. They then take 10 working days to “process the request”. I used to be able to transfer any amount I liked to anywhere in the world I wanted to for £20 and it would be done the same day. The new system is absolutely barking!

Anti-demolition protest provokes police violence Television viewers all over the country could hardly believe their eyes last Friday when they saw scenes of policemen wearing riot gear brutally attacking unarmed people sitting on the ground. And they were even more shocked to discover that the violence had taken place in the El Cabanyal district of Valencia and not in some third world country. The protesters were trying to stop the City Council from demolishing several houses in the area

which the local people believe are of historical interest. But the bulldozers moved in anyway. According to the police report issued afterwards, the police action was justified by what they called “violent aggression” by the protesters.

Poles mourn loss of first couple Crowds have gathered outside Warsaw's neoclassical white presidential palace every day since Saturday's crash to light candles and lay flowers. So many red or yellow glass pots cover the road and pavement in front of the palace that the street cleaners have to remove large swathes of them every morning. An investigation into the crash is under way; the plane clipped treetops as it tried to land in fog at a former air base north of Smolensk city on

Saturday morning. Russian officials have said the pilots of the Sovietbuilt Tu-154 airliner had ignored weather warnings and repeatedly tried to land. Polish prosecutors have stressed there is no evidence the crew were pressured by those on board to ignore the advice. Relatives are in the Russian capital helping forensic scientists identify the bodies. Family members are being supported by Polish and Russian psychologists. By

Tuesday, 45 of the victims had been identified, but some of the bodies are so badly disfigured that DNA evidence will be needed.

Illegal car racers kill man Police are searching for a 20year-old man who was driving a Mercedes e320 in an illegal race last week in Merida, Extremadura, in which an 87-year-old man was killed. It was still daylight when witnesses saw the car mount the pavement at about 130 kph, hitting the man and smashing his body into three pieces. The driver jumped out of the car and was picked up by another racer in a yellow Seat. A woman in her 30s was arrested by police when she came to collect the Mercedes with a tow truck and initially charged with obstructing justice. The driver of the second car was arrested a few hours later and charged with reckless driving and covering up a homicide.

Spain drops out of Top Ten

Poland is in the middle of seven days of mourning over the tragedy; Russia observed a day of mourning on Monday Russian President Medvedev is expected to be among leaders attending Sunday's state funeral for Mr Kaczynski, who was an outspoken nationalist known for his distrust of Russia.

From having the ninth biggest Gross Domestic Product in the world in 2008, Spain will drop to 12th place in 2014, according to estimates by the International Monetary Fund. By then, Brazil, Canada and India will be ahead of Spain on the list of the world's 15 biggest economies.

Crusading judge Garzon faces trial At press time, the Supreme Court's investigating magistrate Luciano Varela had still not confirmed that the country's most high-profile judge, Baltasar Garzon, will stand trial for overreaching his powers over an inquiry into the Franco regime. Sr Garzon launched the investigation into atrocities committed during the four-decade rule of General Francisco Franco in October 2008, but it was shelved amid opposition from prosecutors and other judges.

disappearances during the 1936-1939 Civil War and under the Franco regime that followed. In February, Judge Varela ruled that Sr Garzon had ignored a 1977 amnesty that covers crimes committed during the civil war.

The case against Sr Garzon was instigated by a right-wing group, Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), which claimed he had knowingly exceeded his official remit in launching an investigation into tens of thousands of

The amnesty law pardoned politically motivated crimes committed by both sides to avoid upsetting the country's delicate transition from dictatorship to democracy. Sr Garzon has strongly

denied that he broke the law, and has been supported by the International Commission of Jurists, The New York Times, Amnesty International, many fellow judges and several national

and international celebrities, among others. Famous international figures targeted by Judge Garzon in the past include Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and Osama Bin Laden.

Worst month for domestic violence Six women have been killed by their partners or expartners so far this month. At the rate of one death every two days, this makes it the worst month for domestic violence deaths since April 2004. Of the 19 women killed so far this year, 12 were Spanish and seven foreign. Eleven of them were living with their killers at the time of death and the ages of the women ranged from 20 to 64. Equality Minister Bibiano Aidá appealed to neighbours to come forward if they heard sounds of violence from the house or apartment next door, given that many women are too afraid to report their partners to the police.

The 57-year-old doctor had worked in Africa on and off for the past 20 years and was on a two-month vacation travelling through Uganda and the Congo when he was kidnapped on April 1st by Congolese rebels while sailing down the River Congo. His disappearance was not immediately known until he failed to make contact with his family on an agreed date a few days later. The Spanish government confirmed last week that he had been kidnapped.

Franco's grandson in trouble again Jaime Martinez-Bordiú, 45, faced arrest again last week - he was sentenced to a year in jail in January – which he won't have to serve because he has no record – for beating up a girlfriend. Last week, he was arrested for refusing to give his insurance details after bumping into another car. The other driver claims Martinez-Bordiú threatened him with a gun but the police released him with charges after not finding any trace of a gun or gunpowder on him or

his car. He recently admitted to having a cocaine problem on a television chat show. His brother, who changed his name by deed poll so he could call himself Francisco Franco Martinez-BordiĂş, was caught poaching in 1978 and last year was accused

of insulting and hitting an Argentinian working as security guard on a Renfe train. Both men say they are “very proud of being Franco's grandson. But as the Spanish journalist who wrote the tidbit commented: “We'll never know if the feeling is mutual.

A new gold rush This time it is not people flocking to find gold but to sell it, with an 800% increase in business for those that buy gold and jewellery, while pawn shops are being forced to close down. People simply don't expect to be able to buy back the items. The prices are not to be sneered at either. A wedding ring weighing three grams, can go for â‚Ź50, enough to buy food for a few days. And the price of gold is also rising. A year ago, an ounce of gold was worth â‚Ź648, it is now worth â‚Ź862 and still rising. The buyers are even accepting gold tooth fillings.

Gas explosion covers crime

Pigeon call planned

VALENCIA. After firemen put out a blaze, apparently caused by a gas leak, in a house last Friday they found the bodies of a 60-year-old woman and her 35-year-old son with bullet wounds from a gun found at the scene. The police said the son suffered from mental problems and apparently killed his mother before causing the gas explosion and killing himself.

BARCELONA. The City Council has opened the bidding for a company to get rid of a quarter of the estimated 256,000 pigeons which live there. The winning company will get â‚Ź118,000 and a maximum of 18 months in which to humanely kill the pigeons in a “painless, quick and irreversibleâ€? way and dispose of their bodies without harming the environment.

Churches collect for jobless

Anti-smoking law delayed

MADRID. The money collected by the capital's churches next Sunday will go to the unemployed, as part of Caritas's “Unemployment is scary, its consequences even moreâ€? campaign. The charity has been able to help double the number of jobless and has tripled its economic aid this year. Last year, Caritas raised â‚Ź1.43 million for its jobless programme.

MADRID. Health Ministry sources have said a tougher anti-smoking law may be delayed until the end of the year, given the hail of criticisms from bar and hotel owners and tobacco companies, who are apparently asking for a fiveyear grace period before the new law comes into effect. They claim banning smoking will force many businesses to close.

Before the talks, Mr Obama and China's President Hu Jintao agreed to step up pressure on Iran over its atomic plans. It is estimated there are about 1,600 tonnes of highly enriched uranium in the

world - the type used in nuclear weapons. Almost all of it is held by the acknowledged nuclearweapons states, most of it in Russia. There are also about 500 tonnes of the other key ingredient of a nuclear weapon – plutonium. In total, that is enough to make 120,000 nuclear weapons. The summit was aimed at finding ways to prevent groups like al-Qaeda from getting hold of nuclear devices. Last week, the US and Russia signed a new Strategic Arms Reduction

Deepest volcanic Greek sues over vents discovered Turkish yoghurt

Train crash in north Italy kills 9 A landslide that derailed a train on Monday near the winter sports town of Merano, close to the Austrian border, has killed at least nine people and injured about 30. Trees prevented the train plunging into a river, and firefighters are said to have used cables to secure the wagons. Thomas Widmann, transport adviser to the Bolzano provincial government, told reporters that the landslide appeared to have

been caused by an irrigation pipe that burst, piling rocks, debris and water on to the oncoming train. The death toll had been put at 11, although this was later revised down to nine because of what provincial

governor Luis Durnwalder said was a "counting error". But he warned that the toll was not final as "there could still be someone buried in the mud". The train driver is understood to be among the dead. The most seriously injured were taken by helicopter to

nearby hospitals. An investigation is under way. The railway line, inaugurated in 2005, is one of the most modern in the country. It runs at the foot of an alpine valley with mountains towering up to 3,000m (9,850ft) above.

Stranded ship causes grave damage on reef The Australian authorities said on Tuesday that the Chinese bulk carrier which ran aground off Queensland has seriously damaged the Great Barrier Reef and that the clean-up is likely to be the biggest operation ever undertaken there. The Shen Neng 1 was refloated on Monday night, giving divers the chance to deliver an early assessment of the harm done to the reef. The head of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority said the damage might not have been so extensive had the Shen Neng 1 simply ran aground and stopped, but the winds and currents meant that the 230m (251 yards) coal carrier kept on grinding

against a coral shoal for more than a kilometre during the week it was stranded, turning coral into dust. The authorities are also worried about the toxic paint that has been scraped off the hull, which has already started killing off corals in the vicinity. The paint is designed to stop things growing on the hulls of ships, and it could be weeks before the full extent of the damage is known.

The dairy said it bought the photograph in good faith from an image library.

Beach donkeys Islamists make come-back ban BBC FELIXSTOWE. After a 50-year absence, beach donkey rides have made a comeback at this Suffolk holiday resort. The owners of six donkeys were given a licence by the local council and the first rides took place over Easter. The licence has strict conditions to ensure the donkeys’ welfare and children’s safety. There are photos of donkeys on this beach going back to 1891.

SOMALIA.The Somali Islamist movement al-Shabab has banned the BBC and closed down transmitters broadcasting the Somali language service inside the country, after accusing it of fighting against Islam. The BBC has been broadcasting its services in Somali, Arabic and English there for at least a decade, and surveys suggest it is one of the most widely listened-to news services.

Single mum wins army case A tribunal is considering how much the MoD must pay a female soldier after she won her case against the Army for sexual and racial discrimination. Tilern DeBique, 28, was disciplined after not appearing on parade because she had to look after her daughter. She was told the Army was "unsuitable for a single mother who couldn't sort out her childcare arrangements". The corporal could be paid up to £100,000 for loss of earnings, injury to feelings and aggravated damages.

The judge who ruled on the MoD's appeal called it an unusual case, because Cpl DeBique was a Foreign and Commonwealth soldier serving in the British Army, as well as being a single mother. Her daughter was initially cared for by her family in St Vincent. She then brought her child back to England, and asked if a relative could come to the UK to help with childcare - but was told immigration rules did not allow it. The tribunal criticised the Army for not helping to make childcare arrangements.

Liverpool City Council is considering banning the word obesity in its literature aimed at children, after the Liverpool Schools Parliament asked for the description "unhealthy weight" to be used instead. The 90 nine-to11-year-olds said obesity is offensive and may demotivate overweight children. A council spokesman said that the

proposal would be considered after it invited ideas for its Children and Young People's Plan (CYPP) It could be adopted as part of official strategies to improve children's lives in the city over the next two years. The Liverpool Schools Parliament represents the views of schoolchildren across the city and is consulted by the city council on youth issues.

Local News peace-making gesture - 400 years later Some 1,600 intellectuals are backing a proposal that this year's Principe de Asturias Concord Award should go to the descendants of the “moriscos” who were expelled from Spain in 1609. The Moors were expelled from Spain after the fall of Granada in January 1492 and The Catholic Monarchs then expelled the Jews a few months later. The moriscos are those Moors who converted to Christianity rather than leave Spain, but the Catholic Church never

stopped suspecting that they were practising Moslems behind the closed doors of their homes. The Spanish State and Crown apologised in 1990 to the Jews and now the intellectuals want something similar to be done in the case of the moriscos. Portuguese Nobel laureate José

Saramango, Lebanese writer Amin Maalouf, Spanish novelist Juan Goytisolo and Harvard University professor emeritus Francisco Márquez Villanueva are among those who signed the petition, which was presented to the press last week in Córdoba's Casa Sefarad (Sephardi House).

roca's art collection seeks new owner The receiver appointed by a Marbella court to dispose of the hundreds of art works belonging to Juan Antonio Roca – the man at the centre of the Malaya corruption case – has asked the director of Malaga's Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) to come up with formulas to sell the 430 works. Fernando Francés told reporters that he had already decided to advise the court to auction the works which he has

been examining for several months to sort out the genuine from the many forged works in the collection. He said there is very little of real value and called Roca a “clueless collector”. He put the value of most of the works “at what people would be prepared to pay to be able to say they had a piece from Roca's collection”.

Missing man found dead after police hunt A 30-year-old man who went missing last Friday night after spending the evening drinking in a bar in Villanueva de la Concepcion was found dead on Sunday at the foot of a high voltage tower near Almogia. Apparently he had decided to take his dog for a walk at 2am on Saturday. His family rang his mobile phone all that day but he did not answer. When the dog turned up at his home on Sunday morning, his family

realised something was seriously wrong – the dog was very tired and nervous and vomited the food and water the family gave him. They reported the matter to the Guardia Civil who organised the search for

him. They said the burn marks on his body and the way he was lying indicated that he had tried to climb the tower and had been electrocuted when he touched the cables on his way up.

Man pursues victim into hospital Not content with having beaten up his partner, a 31-year-old man followed her in the emergency room at a hospital in La Linea with a hammer in his hand, apparently with the

intention of finishing off the job. However, some men managed to stop him and held onto him until the police arrived to charge him with attempted murder.

Judge outlines prosecution case in girl’s murder trial A Seville court on Monday charged Miguel Carcaño, his brother Javier Delgado, the latter's girlfriend María García, and a friend of theirs, Samuel Benítez, with the rape, murder and hiding of the body of 17-year-old Marta del Castillo, who was last seen on January 24th last year. According to the judge's 50-page report on the case, Marta had gone to the apartment of her former boyfriend, Miguel Carcaño, where he and a minor known as El Cuco were drinking rum and smoking hashish. Carcaño turned violent when the girl refused to kiss him and started beating her. The two youths then took her into the bedroom, where they threatened her with

her knife before raping her. They then strangled her with an extension cord. They then called Samuel Benitez to come and help them dispose of the body which they placed on a wheel chair belonging to the brothers' mother. At this point Carcaño's brother and his girlfriend turned up and helped them take the girl's body to Samuel Benitez's car. The four accused have

denied knowing where the body was disposed of and despite several thorough searches of the Guadalquivir river and a local rubbish tip, it has never been found. Prosecutors have asked for life sentences for the three men and a lesser sentence for the girl. As a minor, El Cuco is being dealt with separately. Miguel Carcaño after court.

More blood for tourist season Mabella Town Council is backing an initiative by Malaga's Transfusion Centre to increase the Costa del Sol's blood bank ahead of the tourist season. Letters have been sent to more than 1,000 known blood donors which, together with a

massive publicity campaign, should attract a large number of people to the Palacio de Congresos on Thursday, April 15th, Marbella's health council, Antonio Maiz, told reporters. More than 20 professionals, including four doctors, ten nurses

and Red Cross workers will have three mobile blood donation units in which they hope to collect at least 350 units a one-day session. Last year, the Costa del Sol hospital used 8,288 units of blood, of which 869 came from Marbella.

Self-styled Work on promenade begins ‘maquis’ caught MARBELLA. Mayor Angeles Muñoz announced on Monday that work on a 3.5kmlong promenade to connect San Pedro Alcántara and Puerto Banús will begin this week. She said the work will be done in three stages at a cost of more than €2 million. Two of the stages will be financed by the government and the third by Marbella Town Council.

AXARQUIA. Police have a arrested a self-styled maquis – men who took to the mountains to fight the Franco regime after the civil war – except that he was not fighting the government but breaking into houses. They said 65-year-old Juan A.M. had broken into at least 20 isolated houses in the last six months, apparently living off the food he stole there.

Satanic youth imprisoned

Fewer visitors to cave

MALAGA. A Malaga court has sentenced a 29-yearold man to five years in jail for the attempted murder of a friend, as a “sacrifice” demanded for entry into a satanic sect.

NERJA. The number of visitors to the famous cave has dropped by 10% in the first three months of this year in comparison with the same period last year.

The prosecutor told the court that the man arranged to meet the friend in October 2008 in the city’s Campanillas district and tried to stab him to death with a kitchen knife.

A spokesman for the Nerja Cave Foundation lamented that last year’s 50th anniversary celebrations had not been able to halt the steady decline in the number of visitors in recent years.

n 10 - Political Update

The Local Voice

Muriel Pilkington

Memo from Madrid

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of El Pais

Registration campaign kicks off Argentina's Garzón

T

his coming Sunday, April 18th, a group of people will be manning a table at La Trocha market to help foreigners register to vote in next year’s local elections and to inform them about an as-yet unnamed political party which they hope to found.

I

know that the thought of a political party for foreigners makes some people cringe. However, it’s really going to be a pressure group but to give it official clout, it has to be registered as a party. There are around 370,000 people from the EU countries who are registered with local councils around Malaga province, and according to a conservative estimate there are at least as many again who have not registered. One reason seems to be that they fear they’re going to end up paying more taxes than they already do – if they’re legally in the country they will pay the IBI on any property they own here as well as a road tax if they’re car owners, not to mention the 16% VAT on most things they buy here.

W

hat many people fail to understand is that by registering at the local council, called empadronamiento, they’ll be boosting the number of residents in their town and the council will get more money to provide services. And don’t say “what services” in a sarcastic tone of voice because you feel the town hall is not doing its job. Having an organised group of foreign residents breathing – as nicely as possible - down their necks will concentrate town hall officials’ minds wonderfully and encourage them to get off their fat you-know-whats.

A

nd please bear in mind that being empadronado does not automatically give you the right to vote. You have to fill in the registration form that the local town hall will provide and attach a copy each of your NIE/passport and empadronamiento. The foreigners’ office here in Coin – open to the public from 10 am to 2 pm every Friday – will actually make sure the registration forms are delivered to the council, as will the people manning the table at La Trocha on Sunday. So don’t forget those photocopies.

A

part from getting country roads properly asphalted, for example, organised foreign residents could also do a host of other things. Here in Coin we’ve been looking for a place where Spaniards and foreigners can meet for conversation in their respective languages. We know there’s a lot of interest in this on both sides but the available venues all have one drawback or another. But if we had the backing of people who might actually go out and vote, that is, a political

party, we could probably convince the local council to come up with something. That’s just one example of something that would improve life all round – the foreigners would feel more integrated and more confident as their Spanish improves, and the Spanish would get much-needed language practice.

B

ecause don’t forget that communication is a two-way street and lack of it causes an awful lot of frustration for both foreigners and locals alike. For example, I’m a fairly familiar figure at the local town halls (we have two here in Coin) which I invariably visit because of some problem or other. Instead of looking at me with that “Oh no, here she comes again” expression on their face, they usually seem quite pleased to see me – because they know that whatever the problem is, it will be solved for the simple reason that my Spanish is fluent and I can get the information across to both sides. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to be told by some relieved foreigner, usually a Brit, “Well, that was much easier than I thought it would be”.

A

s for more serious problems like illegal constructions, many can be solved if you know how to go about it – that’s another service the local party branch could provide. I doubt if there’ll be another construction boom, but if there is, the local party branch could act as a watchdog to make sure that town halls, lawyers, builders and estate agents don’t get up to their old tricks of outright lies (from builders who assure you have permission to build – a shed, that is); don’t worry, we’ll sort out that bit of paper further down the line (from estate agents and lawyers who just want to collect their commission or fee, and then don’t do anything), or turning a blind eye, as the local councils did on too many occasions in the past when they blithely issued building permits to fill their coffers (or their pockets, if the current crop of corruption scandals are anything to go by).

A

n e-mail address extranjeros2010@yahoo.es - has been set up for those who want more information or who want to volunteer to help organise the as yet unnamed party in their area.

I

f you can’t find justice in your own country, then go somewhere else where you believe you can. That is what the survivors and families of victims who suffered abuses during the Francisco Franco dictatorship have decided to do. They will be making a case this week in Argentina, where they hope the courts in the South American nation will agree to prosecute those responsible for human rights violations under the concept of universal jurisdiction. Besides looking for legal relief, the families of the victims from Spain 's dark past also hope to embarrass the Spanish Supreme Court, which has insisted on putting on trial High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón on charges that he overstepped the judicial boundary by initiating a similar criminal inquiry in 2008. The three right-wing groups which have filed complaints against Garzón – the Falange party, the obscure Mano Limpias labour union and another organisation calling itself Liberty and Identity – all say that the judge purposely ignored a 1977 amnesty law that prevented him from even going near the case. When it comes to human rights and genocide, Garzón believes there can be no such legal impediment, and has backed his argument with international jurisprudence on such issues.

A

rgentinian lawyer Carlos Slepoy, an expert in international jurisdiction, will be representing the families and survivors. They have been in contact with the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo and other human rights organisations to help them prepare for “a genocide” complaint against those former Franco regime officials who are still living today. Slepoy believes the complaint will be admitted on its merits because it is based on the same principles that allowed the Argentinian courts to convict former members of the country’s 1976-83 military dictatorship. The lawyer also believes that many survivors of torture during Franco regime still live in Argentina and will come forward to testify.

S

o now the families are going judgeshopping in Argentina. And the person they believe competent to handle the case is Norberto Oyarbide, a flamboyant but popular federal judge with an impeccable character who has become Garzon's Southern Cone equivalent. And yes, the resemblances are uncanny. In recent months, the 58-year-old magistrate has opened investigations into some of the country’s biggest political scandals, including conducting the inquiry on the amassed wealth of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and her husband, the former President Néstor Kirchner.

Oyarbide is also looking into an illegal government wiretap controversy involving Mauricio Macri, the Buenos Aires mayor and presidential contender in next year's elections. Sound familiar?

I

n the field of human rights, an unyielding Oyarbide two years ago sent former dictator General Jorge Videla straight to prison, ruling that he should serve his life sentence for murder and torture in jail instead of in the comfort of his own home. Videla’s lawyers protested because they claimed the 85-year-old former regime leader was in poor health and should be granted home confinement. But age and illness don't weigh in a person's favour on Oyarbide's balance of justice.

I

n 2007, Oyarbide issued two international arrest warrants for former President María (Isabel) Estela Martínez de Perón for allegedly ordering a right-wing paramilitary force to gun down terrorists before she was deposed in a 1976 military coup. The extradition order for Perón, who lives in the Madrid suburb Villanueva de la Cañada, was halted by the Spanish High Court – not by Garzón but by Judge Juan del Olmo who was on duty that day – because of her poor health.

A

nd just as Garzón may be put on trial, Oyarbide also faced his own political challenge in 2000 when a video surfaced that purportedly showed him frequenting a brothel for male prostitution. He was specifically linked to a network of government officials who provided protection for the male sex workers and their pimps. After a heated vote, Oyarbide emerged unscathed when the Argentinian senate acquitted him.

T

oday, his name appears almost every day on the front pages of the Argentinian press. He gives frequent interviews to the throngs of reporters gathered outside the Buenos Aires courthouse and often appears at red carpet events, showing up last November with a well-known actress at the Mar del Plata film festival.

I

t is not known whether Oyarbide will get the case; the families must first convince Argentinean lawmakers to allow the federal court in Buenos Aires to take up their criminal complaint. But based on his proven record – and his friendship with Garzón – the plaintiffs no doubt would like Oyarbide to bang his gavel and order those responsible, many of whom are believed to be members of today’s Falange Party, extradited from Spain.

Ben Wild Alhaurin Lately there have been a lot of burglaries in Alhaurin el Grande, Alhaurin de la Torre, Cartama and surrounding area. To try to prevent this happening again and keep people informed we started a neighbourhood watch. Most of the people robbed were ex-pats, and most of the time only gold and gold jewellery was taken. Some of those things had a sentimental value for the owners because they were gifts from family or friends. If you were robbed in the last months or weeks, can you tell us about the place, the date and the time this happened to you and also about suspect vehicles or persons. We are making a data base because we are very sure that it is all very well planned and organised by a gang of criminals. Also, if they tried to get in but didn't succeed, please let us know the circumstances. We want to help you and the police in this matter. All your information will be handled very privately. Some tips to keep you and your valuables safe: Never leave gold or jewellery in your bedroom, because that has been the place where the robbers

C.H.A.I.N. have gone to immediately. Wear your gold and jewels when you go out, and leave the rest in a safe at home or at your bank. Make your house as safe as possible and when you go out, even if it's only for shopping, ask neighbours and family and friends to keep an eye on it, and make a note of any suspicious vehicles and persons. You can e mail us on watchoutnow2010@hotma il.com and my name is Ben.We will respond as promptly as we can. Do not hesitate to help yourself and others in your area. Editor says: This has been a problem in the Coin area as well. We had Neighbourhood Watch groups there so why not here as well? Sounds like a good idea to me and if someone can get the registration number of the vehicle the thieves operating from, all the better to get information to the police so that they can be apprehended. On a safety note, I would advise against tackling these people yourselves - a bit of jewellery, no matter how precious, is not worth losing your life over - leave it to the police to do their jobs.

I would like to thank the World Wide Vet Fund for donating over £1200 worth of veterinary supplies that will be used to support CHAIN's NUTS (Neutering Under The Sun) project. The supplies will be used by the student vets visting the area over the forthcoming months. The coverage given by The News has enabled us to support the students and we have received lots of offers of accommodation and help. Thank you to everyone for your assistance which will ensure that this much needed programme continues.

I was surprised to see not a single letter in last week’s paper about the April Fools article that was in The News a couple of weeks ago. Was it just me that noticed that the professor’s name was an anagram of April Fool? Well done Ken Campbell! Do I get a prize for spotting it?! Editor says: I had only one other person phone to say they had spotted it so well done, but, sorry, no prize!

However, we're getting so many enquiries these days about problems people have with their PCs, that we've decided to trial a dedicated help desk for technical support. Our approach is to make things a little easier by

having staff who speak your mother language, we cover 7 languages at the moment - that way you can say exactly what you mean and feel! Why not also come and visit us at the International Fair in Fuengirola from April 29th to May 2nd at the Feria ground in the Finnish Peña. We will also launch the FI.Club benefit card which includes over 120 benefits in different kinds of businesses here on the costa. (www.ficlub.fi) Midastelecom is also a member. Millions of people around the world, including me, were holding their breath, while in space the crew of Apollo 13 were struggling to make their way back to Earth. Apollo 13 was to be the 3rd NASA Moon landing. Apollo 11 had landed in July 1969 and Apollo 12 in November 1969 completing John F. Kennedy’s wish to land a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. If 13 was thought be an unlucky number then NASA tested that myth to the limits. Apollo 13 launched at 13hrs 13mins on April 11th 1970, carrying the 3 astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert to land on the Moon. On an Apollo mission to the Moon there are three separate parts to the ship. The command module is the cone shaped part that carries the crew there and back and is the only piece that returns to Earth. The service module is a tubular rocket section that fits behind the command module and carries the main engine for the return trip to Earth as well as all the oxygen and water that the crew need. Fastened to the front of the command module is the lunar module, this is meant to separate from the command module when

they get to the Moon and carry the crew to and from the Moon’s surface. Two days into the mission, on April 13th (there’s that number again) mission control in Houston asked the crew to stir the oxygen in one of the tanks in the service module; this caused a spark inside the tank that exploded causing damage to the spacecraft. With the service module damaged the astronauts had to use the lunar module as a back up life support. The command module and all its systems had to be shut down to conserve battery power for the return to Earth. The problem facing NASA was whether, as Apollo 13 was already half way to the Moon, to turn the speeding rocket around which would use up all their remaining fuel or to carry on to the Moon where they could use the Moon’s gravity to sling shot around the back of the Moon for a free ride home. They decided to continue to the Moon but now this meant that they would probably run out of oxygen before they made the 4 day

journey back to Earth. By using the engine on the lunar module (something that had never been tried before) they were able to increase their speed and shorten the journey back home. But now another problem occurred, could the explosion in the service module have damaged the all important heat shield of the command module that was imperative for re-entry? Nobody knew. The astronauts prepared for re-entry, jettisoned the lunar module and service module and hoped for the best. Millions around the world watched as the tiny space craft entered the atmosphere. Then on April 17th the sight of 3 huge orange parachutes came into view and we knew. Apollo 13 had made it! If you haven’t already seen it then try and watch the Tom Hanks movie Apollo 13, it’s really authentic. Spring at Age Care The Age Care Charity Shop has now finished its March sale and is offering a good selection of clothes for the spring weather which is now upon us. Why not go along to the shop and choose some new items to cheer you up after this dreary winter we have had this year. The shop can be found in the Centro Comercial Las Jarales, Calahonda (just past Mercadona), and is open Monday to Friday from 10 – 4 and Saturday from 10 -

2. Funds raised in the shop are used to further the work of Age Care Association on the Costa del Sol. Age Care Association recently held a coffee morning for all the volunteers at the St. Andrews Church Hall in Los Boliches. This was the first time that an informal social meeting just for the volunteers has been held and it was felt to be a success. Age Care hope that it will be the first of

many, as the volunteers work hard and because of the nature of the work very rarely meet up with other members of Age Care Association on a social basis. Walk for cancer Join Cindy Jones and a group of friends on Sunday May 2nd for a 5km sponsored walk from Competa to Canillas de Albaida to raise money for Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. The idea first started in 2006 as sadly many people had lost family and friends to cancer. Instead of travelling back to the UK to join a “Race for Life” in aid of Cancer Research UK where annually up to 750,000 women participate at one of the numerous venues across various cities and towns across the UK, they decided to arrange a local event and support Cudeca. For the last four years, the majority of walkers have been ladies, so this year during the current economic climate, Cindy is appealing to everyone to join them. Sadly cancer does not recognise a recession and will continue to affect one person in three, which is confirmed as the numbers increase. The care Cudeca offers is completely free of charge, so they depend entirely on initiatives for fundraising to keep going. For more information and a sponsorship form, please contact Cindy Jones be email at cindyjones19@hotmail.co m or Tel 952 030 215.

Recently many people have asked me if Vitamin B is good for our pets. It seems we all have different ideas so I have been doing some research. B is a range of vitamins, all water soluble, so the general consensus is that too much only produces expensive pee. No symptoms reported with excess intake of B1, although injections may very rarely cause hypersensitivity reactions. B2, no symptoms reported, although may cause yellow urine. So safe it is used as a food colourant. B6, excess symptoms noticed only with minimum daily intakes of more than 200mg taken for at least one year.Unstable gait with numbness in the feet. Changes in the feeling in the lips and tongue. B12, no reaction reported from oral use, very rarely an allergic reaction from injections. Pantothenic acid, no excess symptoms known. Biotin, no excess symptoms reported. Folic acid - in amounts of more than 15mg daily, loss of appetite, nausea, flatulence, abdominal distension, sleep disturbance. No problems with lower intake. On the other hand, the B vitamins do so MUCH good for the body:

Metabolism of RNA and DNA, blood formation, genetic code transmission, resistance to infections, converts glucose into energy in muscles and nerves, needed to repair and maintain body tissues and mucous membranes, needed for formation of brain substances, formation of nerve impulse transmitters, anti depressant, anti-allergy, maintains healthy myelin sheath ..... etc, etc etc. The list of deficiency symptoms is much, much longer than the list for excess intake. For example, nerve degeneration causing tremors, psychosis, mental deterioration, anaemia symptoms, depression, skin disease, PMT, kidney stones, bloodshot eyes, tired eyes sensitive to light, inflamed tongue and lips, scaling of skin around the face, hair loss, trembling, dizziness, insomnia, cracks and sores in corners of mouth, beriberi.(and there's more!)

But as always best to discuss this with your vet. Happy training.

If you have a problem you can write to me at david@thedogman.net and those that might want a one to one consultation call me on 610 868 748.

Ronda - a gem well worth revisiting. WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean

The relentless rain seems to be behind us, the countryside is awash with vibrant colours, the sun has been shining - now is the time to pay a visit to one of the most beautiful towns in Andalucia before the crowds start arriving by the busload.

I

T

he spectacle that is Ronda, a town steeped in history, and one of the most visited places in Spain, is familiar through photographs - and you may even have visited it before. But it is a town well worth revisiting and even thinking of staying over for a night to savour the difference in atmosphere that comes when the sun goes down. All towns look and feel different when the visitors have left, and the street lights cast a glow, and Ronda is no exception.

T

he town is dominated by the famous El Tajo gorge, spanned by the Puente Neuvo. It took 42 years to build back in the 18th century and it is one of the most photographed structures in all Spain. Almost inevitably Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles have both waxed lyrical about the town based on their stays there. There have been modern day celebs and stars who have spent time here too, like Madonna and Jamie Oliver.

A

nd of course everyone knows about the stunning countryside, and the fact that this gorgeous town is little more than 35 minutes from the busy coast which means that in the height of the tourist season it is invaded by thousands of visitors each week who arrive by bus. By mid-afternoon though, the buses are making their way back down the road and Ronda once more turns into a sleepy town.

I

f you want to shop then pottering along the pedestrianised Carrera Espinal will sate the urge and leads down to the Plaza España and bullring. Follow the crowd to the Alameda garden and mirador to peer into the dizzying depths, and if it´s a breezy day hang onto your hats and sunglasses. One of the major monuments on this side of the bridge is the Plaza de Toros, the oldest bullring in Spain and open to visitors. The museum has photos of Welles and Hemingway and Welles's last wish was to buried in Ronda.

There are posters for the first corrida, held in May 1785 and the traje de luces (suit of lights) belonging to Pedro Romero, the father of modern bullfighting. His name can be spotted throughout the town.

A

cross the bridge is the old Moorish town - the Cuidad. On crossing the bridge the road looks like a dull exit leading out of town, but along it are some interesting antique and furniture shops and gift shops. Head right or left into one of the side streets and find yourself in an intricate maze, in which you have no choice but to wander at will. Make sure you have a camera - and for those who are artists there are beautiful doorways, courtyards and facades yearning to be photographed or consigned to canvas.

H

ere are some splendid Renaissance mansions, the two old town bridges and the refurbished Baños Arabes which dates from the 13th century. Ronda´s most picturesque

square is in the Cuidad and in it stands the church of Santa Maria La Mayor - originally the town´s mosque and further along is the Minarete de San Sebastian. A short distance away is the most important of Ronda´s palaces, the 14th century Palacio de Mondragón, on the plaza of the same name. It is thought that it was the real palace of the Moorish Kings - after the reconquista it was altered to accommodate Ferdinand and Isabel, who stayed there while in Ronda.

T

he Museo Peinado displays the work of the artist Joaquín Peinado, an artist from Ronda who spent much of his life in Paris and there are many other museums of interest scattered throughout. And for those who want to really stretch their legs, why not try the walks that can be seen winding their way down to the river from the mirador above. Small moving specks below, making their way past buildings clinging to the sheer rock face, help to illustrate the dazzling height of

the gorge.

T

he majority of eating places are in the main part of the town around Espinal and the Plaza España but in the Cuidad you stumble across small plazas with elegant coffee bars and some exquisite looking restaurants housed in beautifully restored buildings, with fabulous views - so try not to be driven too early by hunger pangs and explore before you eat.

V

isiting Ronda is usually on the must-do list - but don´t think for one moment that popping up for the day is enough to allow the visitor to put a tick in the "done" box. There is so much to this town that it is worth revisiting - the museums, the walks, the restaurants - it really isn´t possible to cram it all in on a day trip. So - add it to your must-do list for this year too, and plan to explore the parts of Ronda you may have walked by in the past and get into the heart of this lovely town.

ABOUT

Concert for Cudeca Juliette was first! concert

Good turnout TIMS Members of the U3A Fuengirola interested in the “Dreamtime” of early settlers in Australia (the Aborigines) heard at their last meeting how this country and the people’s lives, over thousands of years was totally changed and then how the British moved the Aborigine people to make way for their ambitions. Several expeditions were undertaken by the British to establish a land route from south to north of the centre of the country and it was only made possible by using the Aborigine local knowledge. Once the original “telegraph communication” was established to Alice Springs, from Asia and beyond, trade to Europe was able to expand rapidly,

as deals and contracts, which used to be sent by sea, were now confirmed instantly!Several unique photographs of Aboriginal life and British explorers were shown. The last lecture of the U3A Fuengirola 2010 season entitled “Illustrated Medieval Manuscripts” will be given by Liz Cochrane on Monday April 26th . For further information call Roy Futcher on 952 662 511.

East of Java and Chicago Jim rockin’ @ Pógs The Indie-rock band East of Java really stirred up a storm in September last year at Pógs Irish Pub. This is a fast and talented guitar based pub band who can really deliver the goods, the best covers of Van the Man, Guns 'n' Roses, Aerosmith, Golden Earring, Reef, Bon Jovi, U2 and Razorlight to name a few, if you’re not sure just have a look at their web site www.eastofjava.org. Their last gig went down exceptionally well so it is a pleasure to see the boys back in town and on the coast again for a few days sunshine. If you are looking for a really rocking Saturday night this weekend then pop into

Pógs near the PYR Hotel in Fuengirola, the band starts at 10.30pm and it’s all action rock and roll, cold beers and shots - party time. On another note, so to speak, Pógs have a new open jam session every Wednesday night headed

up by the Jam Master himself “Chicago Jim”. Based on the good old American Dimer’s Night (10 cents) idea, where the beers are cheap - caña € 1 - everyone is welcome and the music is good, live and above all spontaneous. Have fun!

The Los Arcos market has been going now for 5 weeks and is growing quickly, with the customers enjoying wandering around the cake, pie, herbs or spices and Israeli food stalls and buying their tins and packets of English food. There are special

homemade cards, toys and games to amuse the children, jewellery, clothes, beautiful hand painted tiles, manicures or pedicures and lovely knitted garments. You can have your sewing machine mended, or get papers or cartridges for your computers, or a special

basket of goodies perfect for that unusual present. There is also the added bonus of a car boot area with all sorts of second hand things to barter for and buy! This market has lots of variation and really is a very pleasant morning out at a friendly Spanish bar with a children’s play

Golden oldies - a guilty pleasure email: editorial@thenewsonline.es

e Bounty Hunter BY ANDY TENNANT Starring Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston Milo Boyd (Butler) is a down on his luck bounty hunter assigned to track down his bail jumping exwife Nicole Hurly (Aniston). He reckons it s going to be an easy pay day. But she gives him the slip as she pursues a lead in a murder cover-up. He catches up

with her, and before you know it everything is going wrong and they are on the run for their own lives. Cue for much comic backchat and a realisation that he still cares for her...etc etc. It won t stretch your mind and the critics

have given it a roasting so look on it as a jolly romp. Both Aniston and Butler have been working really hard to promote the film Aniston even hopped up on stage and did a turn at flamenco when the two stars attended the movie's premiere in Madrid.

W

ell, did you ever expect to see a golden movie moment in which Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger would appear together on the silver screen? Of course not - after all Arnie is now a politician, Sly is getting on a bit and Bruce is from a slightly younger generation of action stars. But it is going to happen. So get prepared for a guilty pleasure - because this year all eyes are fixed on the upcoming ensemble film The Expendables, in which nearly every iconic action star gets to kick ass once again.

W

e are talking old school stars, plus some of the younger generation who stand by ready to assume the mantle once the older guys finally decide to hang up their singlets, fatigues and heavy weapons. The top action movies from the 80s and 90s were designed to get the pulse racing - and maybe along the way spark some sort of deeper debate about the meaning of life, a la The Terminator. It was about grabbing a bag of popcorn and settling down in our cinema seats for a rollercoaster ride in a string of movies that made stars out of the likes of Stallone, Arnie and Bruce, as well as directors like John McTiernan and James Cameron. These films set a new template for action stories - Die Hard, The Terminator 1 and II, Rambo, Rocky - all made their mark on Hollywood history.

A

Dear John BY LASSE HALLSTROM Starring Amanda Seyfried, Channing Tatum John Tyree (Tatum), a young soldier, falls for Savannah (Mama Mia's Seyfried) while he is on leave. It's love at first sight and the two pledge to be reunited when he can return in one year's time.

Savannah promises to write to him, and her letters sustain their love. But then 9/11 happens and their plans are thrown into disarray. Each deployment for John seems more dangerous than the last,

and still he clings onto Savannah's letters until finally their love is overwhelmed by events. An old fashioned tearjerker from the director of The Letter so take tissues because you will need them.

nd now The Venerables are about to ride again in The Expendables - a movie which pays tribute to the movies of the 80s and 90s as well as offering racy parts to a glittering array of stars from those days, as well as more recent action stars like Jason Statham and Steve Austin. It's a heavy weight cast involved in top action scenes, even though the budget was cut from $100 million to $80 million. It's nowhere near Avatar money but that's still a decent pot of loot to play with.

T

he movie has been written by David Callaham and Sylvester Stallone - filming began last March in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans and Los Angeles and the release date is targetted for August 13th this year. An assembly of hired guns are sent on a mission to a South American country - their job is to

overthrow the evil dictator - well of course it is. Of course the situation is not as it seems and the men find themselves locked in a deadly game of deception - oh, to make matters worse there is a traitor among them.

S

o, just who is starring in this eagerly awaited tribute to hard men. It's probably easier to start off with who isn't - both Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme passed. But feast your eyes on this cast list: Stallone as Barney "The Schizo" Ross, a paramilitary veteran and team leader; Jason Statham as Lee Christmas, second in command and a former member of the SAS and expert at close quarters combat using knives; Jet Li as Bao Thao, a Chinese expert at hand to hand combat; Dolph Lundgren as Gunnar Jensen, a Swedish sniper; Mickey Rourke as Tool, a former Expendable and now an arms dealer and tattoo parlour artist/owner; Bruce Willis as Mr Church, the man who hires the Expendables, and Arnold Schwarzeneggar as Trench, an old rival of Ross. Don't expect to see too much of Arnie -he has a cameo role...after all, he does have a day job.

T

he bad guys include David Zayas as General Garza, the evil dictator; Eric Roberts is Monroe, a corrupt CIA agent working to defeat the gang, Steve Austin as Dan Paine, Monroe's bodyguard and Gary Daniels - Garza's henchman and a former Expendable with a grudge.

A

nd none of the older stars hid behind their age. Sly, aged 63, suffered a hairline fracture in his neck after a very realistic fight scene with Austin and had to have an operation to insert a metal plate in his neck - phew!

S

o there it is - a guilty pleasure waiting to be unleashed on the movie going public - an old-school kick-ass action movie, where people shoot each other...no aliens, no 3D and three of the top actioners of all time appearing together in one scene for the first time. And it might not be the last. Producer Avi Lerner has reported that there has been an overwhelmingly positive response to early test footage and trailers and there is already talk of making two more sequels based on the surviving members of the team. Will it be with or without zimmer frames and support stockings?

There are annoyances and niggles that keep tripping you up lately - you get one thing sorted out and laid to rest and then another is there waiting to be acknowledged and dealt with. You could feel like you are the target of someone else’s frustrations and anxieties. This can be a stressful time for you, but rest assured that once these issues have been ironed out and inner adjustments made, a positive wave of abundance is flowing your way. You can see the landscape before you with crystal clear vision but at the same time you may feel frustrated because the seeds of your labours are only now just beginning to take root. The best thing you can do is to have an action plan and remain focused in the moment, allowing things to develop naturally. By the middle of next week your eyes will be opened to new insights that will aid you in solving some difficult problems. The proof is in the pudding, Gemini. The ideas have been mulled over and now is the time to take action – there is nothing more powerful than follow through. Any sign of hesitation will allow the other side more leverage. Getting to the core of an emotional issue will be central to making progress in your working life. The time is now for practical application, so if there is something that has been mulling over in your mind for a while, you know what to do. You are right at a turning point in your life – perhaps you have been working long and hard on a particular project and have seen no results. However, even if you feel like giving up the heavens are telling you to stick to your guns and see it through. Around the corner there are the rewards that you have been looking for. Make sure you base all your words right now on solid facts when it comes to finances and do not let your emotions get in the way of important decisions. Keep your chin up because everything is going your way, there is a multitude of positive energy on your horizon, with many opportunities and choices. As everything is working in your favour, make sure that you remain open and adaptable so that you can embrace all and not discount some things that initially do not look that appealing – take the time to delve deeper. This is a very social time for you so expect the invites to come flooding in, friends and acquaintances flock. Fathoming a way around your current crisis is what you do best. Where there is a will there is a way. Balance is needed within your life and this is no time to burn the candle at both ends, concentrating on the present and keeping a clear head will help you immensely. Romance finds you mid-week even if there is no-one in your life right now, there is likely to be soon. You will be surprised at the amount of support that is around you when you need it most.

LIBRA

This is a time of peeling back the layers to uncover all that means the most to you. Your mind is awake, alive and on the ball making it easier for you to identify the tight spot you have found yourself in. A new beginning finds you soon and you feel able to draw a strong line in the sand – you can finally see a bigger picture. On a mundane level you may have left some tasks undone rd September 23 - and need to complete domestic chores before they build up out of all nd October 22 proportion.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

The last thing you need is your fingers burnt and although there is temptation all around you, you also know by going down a particular path, you have way too much to lose. The mundane is boring you now and you long for some excitement in your life, you are no longer content to just amble on. There is something on the line, you need to play it safe with all that you value and yet take a risk to forward your own growth – a balancing game is yours to be played.

SAGITTARIUS This is a week when anything can happen although things may not occur as you thought they would, but rather start unfolding, in a bizarre fashion. There will be opportunities that take you out of your comfort zone and into places that are foreign to you so that you are able to experience more of what life has to offer. Expect your eyes to be widened as there are fulfilling times ahead. nd November 22 - Romance is highlighted and someone from the past could get in contact. st December 21

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

As I had to go away suddenly at the weekend , I haven't had time to prepare the next kitchen garden piece so, here's something yummy instead. We'll get back to making our kitchen garden soon!

Stuffed Peaches

(Serves 4-8)

I am very piggie with these so I'd only get 4 helpings as everybody would get two peaches each, but you really only need one if you're sensible!

Ingredients: ● 50gr unsalted butter ● 8 tinned peach halves ● 25gr salted butter ● 65gr caster sugar ● 65gr ground almonds ● 65gr sponge cake crumbs ● 1 egg white ● ½ tbsp Anis liqueur

Method ● Grease a shallow ovenproof dish with the unsalted butter and lay the peach halves, hollow side up in the dish. ● Melt the salted butter, keeping a little aside, and mix in the sugar, almonds

and cake crumbs into the remaining butter. ● Add the egg whites and liqueur and beat until creamy. ● Using a spoon or piping bag, fill the peach hollows

with the mixture. ● Brush with the remaining butter and bake in the oven at 180ºC / Gas mark 4 for 20 minutes. ● Serve hot with cream. ADVERTISING FEATURE

Self-tanning

Five-a-day does not cut cancer A study which examined the link between diet and disease has found that eating more fruit and vegetables has only a modest effect on protecting against cancer. The study joins a growing body of evidence undermining the high hopes that pushing "five-aday" might slash Western cancer rates. The US team took into account lifestyle factors such as smoking and exercise when drawing their conclusions. They said they could not rule out that even the small reduction in cancer risk seen was down to the fact that the kind of people who ate more fruit and vegetables lived healthier lives in many other

respects too. They concluded that in the best case scenario, an extra two portions of fruit and vegetables each day could prevent 2.6% of cancers in men and 2.3% of cases in women. However, they stressed that eating fruit and vegetables is still key to good health. Twenty years ago, the World Health Organization recommended the consumption of at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to prevent

cancer and other chronic diseases, and this advice has formed a central plank of public health campaigns in many developed countries. But research has failed to substantiate the suggestion that as many as 50% of cancers could be prevented by boosting the public's consumption of fruit and vegetables. However, there is substantial evidence that specific substances contained in certain fruit

and vegetables, if harnessed, could still have an important, protective effect. For example, lycopene from tomatoes may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, while chemicals in broccoli are thought to stimulate a gene which protects against bowel cancer. And data still suggests fruit and vegetables may provide protection against cardiovascular disease, one of the major killers in the developed world.

RESEARCH

Pros and cons of aspirin New research casting doubt on the benefit of a daily aspirin in people with very early peripheral artery disease underlines the fact that aspirin therapy isn't for everyone. Here's what recent research on regular aspirin use reveals.

e pros: Pre-eclampsia risk during pregnancy A 2007 study suggested that pregnant women who took aspirin or other antiplatelet drugs were 10 percent less likely to develop pre-eclampsia, which involves high blood pressure and potentially serious complications for mother and foetus.

Colorectal cancers A 2009 study suggested that aspirin use in certain patients who have had colorectal cancer (with tumours that express the COX-2 enzyme) may improve survival. Another

study in 2008 found a significantly lowered risk of developing the cancers in men using aspirin (and other non-steroidal antiinflammatories) regularly over the long term.

Breast cancer recurrence, or possibly even its development A report issued in February 2010 based on data from the Nurses' Health Study suggested that women who had breast cancer and took a low-dose aspirin two to five times weekly were 71% percent less likely to have a deadly recurrence than those who took little or no aspirin. And a 2008 study found a 13% relative risk reduction in women who used aspirin regularly, compared with those who did not.

Alzheimer's disease Parkinson's disease Research has been inconclusive, but a 2008 review found that people who used aspirin had a 13% percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's. The study added to an ongoing debate about whether certain types of NSAIDs—say, ibuprofen versus aspirin—were more beneficial.

Strokes A 2008 study found that stroke patients who took daily aspirin to prevent another stroke and also took ibuprofen reaped no anti-platelet benefit. After a patient stopped the ibuprofen, the aspirin became effective. The Food and Drug Administration warns that aspirin's benefits may be diminished by ibuprofen use.

A 2007 study suggested that women who used aspirin regularly (defined as two or more times a week for at least a month at any point in their lives) may be 40% less likely to develop the disease.

A lot more people are turning to self-tanners to give that sun kissed look, since the risk of skin cancer has been vastly publicised and it makes sense to try and reduce sun exposure by turning to other options. Getting the right suntan in a bottle is not always straight forward and it is far better to pay for a tried and tested make that will give you a smooth even cover and realistic colour. Even the best sunless tanners can leave you orange if you don’t apply them correctly; it can take a lot of patience. Most self-tanning lotions or foams say to re-apply every two or three days as the effect wears off fast but what happens if you overdose on it or forget to use gloves when applying the lotion - making your hands darker than the rest of your skin? This problem will naturally fix itself - as the outer layer of skin sheds off the colour comes off with it. If you are attending an important event and can’t wait for nature to take its course then use baking soda. Place a teaspoon full of baking soda on a dishcloth and gently rub it on damp skin. The baking soda acts as an exfoliant and speeds up the removal of the tan. Do not rub too hard wait an hour and try again if the stain is stubborn. If you have used too much self-tanner all over your body, you can put several cups of baking soda in your bath and soak. Use a loofah to gently rub over the skin, paying attention to ankles, feet, elbows and other places where there is a concentration of colour. To cover up sunless tanner on your face while it's wearing off, try layering mineral make-up over it. Then use a tinted moisturiser in green or blue to try to counteract seriously orange skin, then add your make-up on top of that.

Asthma A 2008 study found that women 45 and older who took 100 mg of aspirin every other day were 10% less likely to develop asthma over the next decade than women given a placebo. The study authors note that aspirin could exacerbate symptoms in about 10 percent of people already diagnosed with asthma.

White lies make world go around

Research has revealed that the average Briton tells on average four white lies a day - that's a whopping 1,500 each year. Almost one in six men admitted they were most likely to lie to their wife or girlfriend on average at least twice a day. And the most popular lie of all was saying you had no mobile phone signal - one in four admitted regularly using the white lie after ignoring calls on their mobile phone. The survey also revealed that one in three Britons lie about their weight, 25 per cent fib about the amount of debt they have and 30 per cent tell porkies about the amount of exercise they do. More than 40 per cent of

women confessed that they have lied about how much new clothes have cost and around a third have fibbed about how much they have had to drink.A spokesman for OnePoll, who carried out the survey, said that little white lies were often harmless or a tactic - and although it was sad to see compliments in the top 50, perhaps it was better to flatter with a fib rather than destroy someone with the truth. Three quarters of people think women are better liars and the research revealed

Cheryl´s accent tops poll Not only is Cheryl Cole one of the best dressed women in the world and the face of L'Oreal, she now possesses one of the sexiest accents. Girls Aloud member Cole has released her own successful album and been mooted as a panellist on Simon Cowell s X Factor TV show in America. But Cheryl reckoned that her Geordie accent could hold her back because the American audience would find it hard to understand her. But a UK poll for Travelodge has found that her way of

that 46 per cent of women have been found lying compared to 58 of men. Men tell the most lies with five a day on average, while women fib only three times

a day. The top 10 also included: You look lovely, We´re just good friends, No, your bum doesn´t look big in that and I´m on my way. Any of these ring a bell?

speaking is the sexiest in the UK. The Newcastle accent was voted most appealing, followed by Edinburgh and Belfast. Brummies found their accent at the bottom of the poll, followed by Wolverhampton and Bradford. The top ten cities were: Newcastle, Edinburgh, Belfast, London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, York and Oxford. The least favourite accents also included Wakefield, Coventry, Cambridge, Hull, Sheffield, Swansea aand Plymouth.

Horse drawn Hummer takes to the streets In an age of decadence, what would happen if we ran out of oil. Horse drawn Hummers? Jeremy Dean has taken a gas guzzling 8 mile-pergallon Hummer H2, a symbol of extravagance, and converted it into a working horse drawn carriage and took it onto the streets of New York.

Rossi wins opener as Stoner crashes out Nobody had the speed to catch Casey Stoner at the Qatar Grand Prix - but then they didn't have to.... Valentino Rossi began the defence of his MotoGP world title with victory in the floodlit Qatar Grand Prix at the weekend after Australian Casey Stoner crashed out early on. Unbeaten in all four track sessions prior to the race, Stoner had slipped back to fourth at turn one before picking off Ducati teammate Nicky Hayden, Rossi and the fast-starting Dani Pedrosa to take the lead on lap four of 22. But Rossi was able to take the lead on the sixth lap when Stoner, who had started on pole position and was chasing his fourth successive Qatar win, slid off while holding a two second advantage. It marked the third time that Stoner has crashed out

Rossi, Lorenzo & Dovizioso on the podium

while leading a MotoGP race, after Brno and Misano in 2008. That mistake should have handed Rossi a simple win, but the Fiat Yamaha star found 2006 title rival Hayden - who had qualified just ninth - stubbornly sticking with him, while Pedrosa's Repsol Honda

was replaced at the front by team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. "A great way to start the season for us, for me, for my team, for Yamaha," said the Italian. "Another first and second and these 25 points on this track are like gold for us, for our championship. "I

think it was from 2005 (that) I didn't win the first race (of the season), so we try to continue like this."

also very tired. This second position is fantastic and also the victory of Vale for Yamaha is perfect."

Rossi's Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo worked his way through the pack to finish second. The Spaniard, riding with stitches in his right hand after an accident in testing, took third place from the Ducati rider and ever present Nicky Hayden on the 20th lap and then went up the inside of Honda's Andrea Dovizioso on the final lap to give his team the one-two.

Hayden passed Dovizioso two turns from the end, but the Italian powered past down the front straight to take the final podium spot by .011 secs.

"I struggled a lot at this track with the sliding and I was riding at the limit physically and also on my riding style," he said. "At the end I did the maximum I can to overtake Hayden and Andrea. I am

Tomizawa, winner of Moto2

The new Moto2 series, which has replaced the 250cc category started with a terrific race as Japanese rider Shoya Tomizawa rode away from the field. The 19year-old gave no indication of his potential in 2009, with 10th his best finish, but he put on a masterclass on the Honda-powered Suter chassis. Starting ninth on the huge 41-rider grid, Tomizawa took the lead on

the sixth of 20 laps and never gave it up as he went on to win by 4.656 seconds. Spaniard Alex Debon stole second place from Frenchman Jules Cluzel six turns from the end of the race. Former MotoGP racer Tony Elias was having a great ride until his tyres went off, but was nearly taken out early by Alex Debron who came up the inside just as Elias was leaning in , very hairy!!.

Since its foundation, six years ago, the club's membership and activities have grown considerably and this latest move heralds a new and exciting year. Sports Smith new Davis Cup captain The LTA yesterday appointed Leon Smith, Andy Murray's childhood friend and former coach, as Great Britain's new Davis Cup captain. Smith's appointment has been seen as a clear attempt at persuading Murray to play in Britain's crucial relegation play-off against Turkey in July. However, if that was the intention, it already appears to have failed, with Murray saying yesterday: "Leon's my friend, but I need to do what's right for me." With so little strength in depth, it's clear Smith's success or otherwise will depend on Murray's participation. And with that being the case, is it fair for Murray to put his own career ahead of British tennis? Aside from the grand slams, should Murray make the Davis Cup his priority? Or should Murray manage his schedule as he sees fit?.

Klitschko throws down challenge Wladimir Klitschko has accused Britain's WBA world heavyweight champion David Haye of "running away". Haye withdrew from a fight with the IBF and WBO title holder last June because of injury but says he is now ready to fight him, or his brother Vitali. The 34-yearold Ukranian said: "I am officially calling you out to fight me.

Cancellara breaks away to Derby day misery win ‘The Hell Of The North’ for Malaga Tour of Flanders champion Fabian Cancellara added the 108th edition of ParisRoubaix to his collection on Sunday. The Swiss strongman caught Tom Boonen napping with about 50km to go and shot away from the Quick Step captain and a short list of elite favourites to solo in for a well-deserved victory, his second on the Roubaix velodrome.

Cancellara’s triumph made him just the 10th rider in history to win the Flanders-Roubaix double, and he was delighted to take his place in the record books. “Cycling has a long, long history. To be No. 10, and the way I won it, I am really proud,” he said. “I knew that with my form and the way the last weeks have been going,

Sevilla moved back into pole position for a Champions League spot and dumped Malaga further into relegation trouble with a 2-1 win at the Rosaleda Stadium.

Cancellara pounding the cobbles on his way to Roubaix

the way that I went, that I had these 10 metres. I knew they are going to be scared. Who wants to close this gap? They knew it straight away, they were racing for second place.” Boonen struggled to organize a chase, but nobody was interested in towing the three-time Roubaix champion to the line, and what should have been a pursuit instead

became a series of attacks and counters in a race for second place. Thor Hushovd (Cervélo Test-Team) easily won that contest, two minutes after Cancellara had crossed the line, with Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky) third. As for Boonen, he had to settle for fifth at 3:14, behind Cervélo’s Roger Hammond.

Sevilla started well with Brazilian Luis Fabiano looking dangerous but Malaga got an early break, Sevilla's goalkeeper Palop dropping a tame shot allowing Caicedo to sweep home from close range to put Malaga 1 up. The rest of the first half turned out to be a scrappy affair but Malaga seemed content with this, and were made to pay for their negative tactics in the second half. It didn’t take long for Sevilla to test Malaga's keeper Manua, and he made a great save from

Fabiano, but he was at fault for Sevilla's equilizer, fumbling an easy cross for Cala to score as early as 6 minutes into the second half. Sevilla's tails were up and on 85mins ex Malaga player Lolo rose majestically to head home and give Sevilla all 3 points.Osasuna away on Wednesday becomes even more important for Malaga.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again What a fantastic event the first major of the year turned out to be, as the world’s finest golfers descended on Augusta National Golf Club for The Masters. High hopes that, at last, a European player could win a major for the first time since 1999. After the first two days play it looked like those hopes may have been justified with two Englishmen, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter, locked on eight-under at the top of the leader board. On the Saturday Westwood started brilliantly with four birdies in ten holes while, sadly, Poulter struggled. In the meantime the rest of the field seemed to be marking time until a fantastic burst of scoring by Phil Mickleson saw him surge up the leaderboard so that by the end of the day he was just behind Westwood on eleven under par. Tiger Woods was not too far behind on eightunder but he seemed to be at odds with his game and his score was more to do with fantastic recovery play rather than solid golf. On Sunday, Westwood and Mickleson traded blows for the front nine with sporadic bursts from other players, most notably Anthony Kim, the evergreen Fred Couples and, of course, Woods but down the stretch the focus was on the last two out. Mickleson produced birdies and an eagle on the back nine to prevail by three shots from the Englishman who really had done very little wrong and has shown that he has the game to compete with the very best. This weekend it is the turn of the C.O.G.S. to strut their stuff at Antequera so until next time... keep your head down. Dave

Terry’s horror tackle on England team mate

Pitch to be replaced

"James is exceptionally lucky his career is intact. It should have been a straight red card," said Martin O'Neill.

The Wembley pitch will be relaid every three months in future as the Football Association seeks to end criticism of the playing surface at the stadium that has become a regular source of embarrassment. The pitch could be replaced as soon as next week after being heavily condemned following the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend, during which the players found it difficult to keep their footing, and the surface cut up despite the dry conditions. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp described the surface as "ridiculous". Striker Peter Crouch said it was worse than any he had encountered at the stadium playing for England and had contributed to Michael Dawson's slip that led to Portsmouth's first goal.

Arsenal star returns to squad Arsene Wenger has confirmed Robin van Persie will return to the squad for Wednesday's crucial Premier League game. In Van Persie's absence, Arsenal have scored only 1.77 goals per league game, as opposed to 3.26 before his injury. .

Man City are looking odds on favourites for the vital 4th spot in the Premier League but yesterday star striker Carlos Tevez launched an attack on manager Roberto Mancini’s rigorous training regime. The Argentinian said everyone was tired and he had support from team mates. John Terry’s’ horror tackle’ on James Milner studs up

jumped to the defence of Terry and said his defender tried to speak to Milner after the game but found Villa's dressing room 'locked'. “I think the yellow card was right,” said Ancelotti. “I saw the tackle on the television. John touched the ball before making contact with Milner. “I know that Terry called Milner and, for Milner, it was okay. I think the decision of the referee was right. It was a yellow card. The rules say that if you have the intention to touch the ball, it's not a red card. I know he tried to speak with Milner after the game

Doyle quits board on Saturday. He went to their locker room but it was locked. For him, I don't think it was a problem to say sorry. It was just a tackle. I know O'Neill was upset but there's no news.” But a spokesman for Chelsea also revealed that Terry had contacted Milner via text message and not felt the need to apologise.

Lee Doyle, who manages snooker stars including Ronnie O'Sullivan and Stephen Hendry, has quit the board of the sport's governing body. The 100 Sport Group chairman objects to proposals to give Barry Hearn a 51% stake in World Snooker as part of his plans to revitalise the game.

The spokesperson said: 'They texted each other last night and John was checking to see if he was okay. He stopped short of saying sorry’.
