Man to be charged with Milly’s murder Former doorman Levi Bellfield is to be charged with the kidnap and murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler. The teenager’s body was found on Yateley Heath in Hampshire in September 2002, six months after she went missing in Walton-onThames. She disappeared on her way home from school after calling her father to say she would be home in half an hour. Bellfield, 41, will also be charged with attempting to kidnap another girl the

previous day.The CPS said the charges were to be made against Bellfield, from west London, after it received a large dossier of circumstantial evidence. In a statement, Milly's parents Bob and Sally said it was very hard to say how they felt after eight long and difficult years, adding that they were extremely grateful to Detective Superintendent Maria

Woodall and her investigating team for their painstaking work and support over the years. Nigel Pilkington from CPS South East said a summons had been obtained from Staines Magistrates' Court and would be served on Mr Bellfield. He said that after carefully reviewing all the evidence in this case, he

Dissident refuses help Spain offered Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas an air ambulance on Monday to bring him here for medical attention after he picked up an infection in the Santa Clara hospital where he has been treated since March 11th.

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Yesterday morning, I thought my husband had actually totally lost it. He woke up, looked out the window and said, “There's a duck in the pond!”. The fact that we don't have a pond was the first thing that struck me. We do, however, have a swimming pool and, sure enough, there was a huge duck swimming around on it. Not a problem in itself but, all around the edge of the “pond” were my cats sitting watching it. I wasn’t sure who was in more danger - the duck from the cats, or the cats from drowning in the pool. Luckily a near neighbour of mine has ducks and they came and rescued it so it will have a proper pond, lovely food and nice friends to swim around with now. Strange world, innit?! The friends of mine that are looking for property that I told you about last week have now put in a high offer on an apartment and are waiting to see if it's been accepted. The place will need quite a bit of work but it's in a good position. There's a new market up here in the campo on Friday's at Venta Los Arcos on the Coin to Cartama road, from 9.30am to 1pm. There's crafts, food, second hand goods and all manner of things. If you fancy setting up a stall see their advert on the Out and About page 17 for contact details. Last week’s Poco a Poco had three mistakes in the Spanish bits. It was retyped here and the mistakes were made by our Spanish person, not Val... oops!

He was being fed intravenously but this was stopped because of the infection. However, it was resumed on Tuesday after the infection was brought under control. Fariñas, who has been on hunger strike since February 24th,

started his strike the day after the death of hunger striker Orlando Zapata. The Cuban government has accused both Zapata y Fariñas of being common delinquents and “mercenaries in the pay of the United States”.

Man to be charged with Milly’s murder [...] As well as the charges relating to Milly, who disappeared near a railway station, Mr Bellfield is also accused of trying to kidnap Rachel Cowles, 19, on March 20th 2002. A UKwide search was carried out to find Milly, and her remains were eventually found about 25 miles

An investigation was opened in February last year. After studying the relevant documents, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which does not have the final word, concluded that Sr Aznar was seeking “the satisfaction of the general public interest, independently of any personal satisfaction”. Speculation grows over ETA negotiations Juan Cotino, a former director general of the Police and the Guardia who is currently the third deputy premier in the Valencia regional government, said on Monday that he “had no doubts” that the government was planning to re-open negotiations with the Basque terrorist group ETA. Juan Cotino was supporting a theory put forward last week by Euro-MP Jaime Mayor Oreja, who was Interior Minister during José María Aznar's first administration. Mayor said

during a TV interview that the government's determination to get the socalled Basque “abertzale” left wing ETA sympathisers - to denounce ETA violence, something it has always

refused to do, indicates that the government is willing to allow the abertzale to participate in next year's local elections. He said the pay-off for ETA would be a return to negotiations if the

Socialist Party wins the 2012 general election in line with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's dream of being the Spanish PM who brought ETA in from the cold.

Moscow in mourning Moscow held an official day of mourning on Tuesday for the 39 people killed in Monday's twin suicide bombings on the city's Metro. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has vowed to "destroy" the perpetrators. Security has been stepped up amid fears of fresh attacks. No group has said it carried out the bombings, but officials have blamed Muslim groups from the northern Caucasus, where

Abuse victims speak out The Roman Catholic Church in Germany has launched a telephone hotline for victims of sexual abuse, which will be run from the western city of Trier. Its bishop, Stepah Ackermann, has been appointed to handle any allegations made against clergy. On Monday Bishop Ackermann announced that 20 priests in his bishopric had been accused of abusing

children since the 1950s. He said he was stunned and encouraged victims to come forward. In other parts of the country, hundreds of people have already come forward saying they were abused by priests as children between

the 1950s and 1980s. The scandal has so far affected two-thirds of German dioceses, and the head of the country's Catholic Church has apologised over the accusations. Critics are putting huge pressure on the Church to

break what they call its "wall of silence". Pope Benedict, who has been accused of failing to act against a suspected sex abuser when he was archbishop of Munich, has promised swift action to deal with the allegations.

Amnesty International urges China to disclose executions Amnesty International has urged China to disclose the number of prisoners it executes. Since 2007, all death sentences passed in China have been subject to a mandatory review by a higher court, a process China says has reduced the number of killings carried out. But an Amnesty spokesman said: "However, as long as statistics on the use of the death penalty in China remain a state secret, it will be impossible to verify this claim and to analyse actual trends." In its annual report on the use of the death penalty, Amnesty said some 714 people were known to have been executed in 18 countries in 2009. But the group said

the true global figure could be much higher, as thousands of executions were thought to have been carried out in China alone. At least 366 people were executed in Iran, 120 in Iraq and 52 in the US. Amnesty praised Burundi

and Togo for abolishing the death penalty in 2009 and said that for the first time in modern history, no-one had been executed in Europe or the former Soviet Union over the year. Amnesty said that by the end of 2009, there were

17,118 people on death row around the world, with 2,001 people sentenced that year. But while 58 countries still had a death penalty in 2009, only 18 countries were known to have carried out executions.

law enforcement agencies would "do everything to find and punish the criminals". Undeterred by the attacks, millions of commuters are continuing to use the Moscow metro. The city's Metro is one of the busiest underground railways in the world,

carrying about 5.5 million passengers a day. The coordinated attacks were the deadliest in Moscow since February 2004, when 40 people were killed by a bomb on a packed metro train as it approached the Paveletskaya station.

Gaddafi calls for ethnic divisions

Flood trail will help boost visitors

After previously saying Nigeria should be split into a Muslim and a Christian country to end communal clashes, Libya's Muammar Gaddafi said on Monday it should be divided into several states along ethnic lines. He was replying to Nigeria's condemnation of his earlier comment. In a statement to the state-run news agency, Jana, Col Gaddafi said it was clear that Nigeria does not consist of two parts. He noted that all the major tribes wanted their own states, and said Nigeria should follow in the footsteps of Yugoslavia. He said the most bloody conflict in the former Yugoslavia - in Bosnia - arose because that was a multi-ethnic state, while the other countries seceded "peacefully". An attempt by Nigeria's Igbo people to gain independence in 1967 sparked a war which left more than one million people dead. Hundreds have died this year in violence between rival Muslim and Christian groups around the city of Jos. Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation, with some 130 million people. It has more than 250 different ethnic groups, broadly divided into a largely Muslim north and mainly Christian south.

Cockermouth in Cumbria is using last November’s floods to create a tourist "flood trail" in a bid to boost visitor numbers. Participating retailers will display boards showing the height floodwaters reached in their premises, as well as photographs taken at the time. It forms part of a wider project aimed at promoting tourism in the town and increasing business. The scheme was made possible by two £5,000 grants from the West Cumbria Development Agency and the local nuclear industry, awarded after a funding bid by the Chamber of Trade. In addition, the cash will be used to pay for a leaflet campaign aimed at promoting awareness that Cockermouth is open for business.

Daughter to challenge Adams

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

The daughter of Jean McConville, who was murdered by the IRA, is planning a civil action against Gerry Adams over his alleged role in her mother's disappearance. In his new book 'Voices from the Grave', journalist Ed Maloney claims the Sinn Fein president ordered the killing and secret burial of the mother of 10 in 1972. The Sinn Fein president has always denied the allegations. Mrs McConville’s daughter, Helen McKendry, has said she will pursue Mr Adams in the courts. She said it was not for money: "Gerry Adams has to come out and tell people the truth. It is not just my

family. It is everybody that was disappeared, that was hurt, killed or whatever during the whole Troubles in Northern Ireland. He needs to tell the truth." The claims were made by a former IRA commander in Belfast, Brendan Hughes, who died in 2008. A Sinn Fein spokesperson said: "In the last years of his life Brendan Hughes was very ill, and like other former republican activists he opposed Sinn Fein's peace

strategy from the outset.” But Mr Maloney said that what Brendan Hughes had done, in giving the interviews, was to tell "the unvarnished truth" which was "unprecedented in IRA annals". Jean McConville, 37, lived with her children in Belfast in the early 1970s. She was taken from her Divis home by IRA members after being accused of being an informer. She was interrogated, shot and

secretly buried in County Louth in the Republic of Ireland. Her body was found nearly 30 years later in 2003. Her family have rejected claims that she was an informer. In 2006 an investigation by Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan found no evidence that Mrs McConville had passed information to the security forces. Hughes, who helped in her interrogation, told Mr Maloney that the killing was "utterly pointless and brutal".

Wales may get next UK nuclear plant The UK's next nuclear power plant could be constructed at Wylfa on the island of Anglesey, one of 10 sites approved by the UK government in November

2009 for new nuclear plants. Isle of Anglesey County Council leader Clive McGregor said the move would have a "positive impact" on the community

and deliver "high quality jobs". He said the development could bring £8bn into the local economy, creating thousands of jobs building the plant and up to

1,000 running it. However, the Welsh Assembly Government remains opposed to new nuclear plants in Wales despite the approval of Wylfa as a potential site.

The Local Police found the body of a man in a car boot in Marbella on Saturday after people called in complaining of a bad smell in the area. The car, a Renault Laguna with a Malaga number plate, belonged to a 60-year-old Coin man, whose family reported him missing in January. He was last seen on January 11th and from the state of decomposition, police said the body appeared to have been in the boot since then. At press time, an autopsy had not determined the cause of death.

The A-387 will be closed as of Monday, April 5th, from the Los Morenos roundabout to the crossroads into Alhaurin. The newly surfaced A404 from Alhaurin el Grande to Coin will be formally opened. Alhaurin el Grande councillor Gregorio Guerra said it would take two months to do the necessary improvement works on that stretch of the A-387,

adding that people living there would have access to their homes. He said there will be “flexibility” to permit access to the different businesses in the area. There are a number of restaurants and ventas, as well as people who live on Alhaurin Golf urbanisation who need to get into Alhaurin to work and who may now need to use the A404.

Lorca honoured by statue

EWS IN BRIEF

A life-size statue of Federico Garcia Lorca, who was executed by Falangists in August 1936, will join nine others immortalising historical figures, painters, writers and musicians in Granada’s central Avenida de la Constitucion. Seventy years after his death, the poet’s native city finally has a statue of him. In the photo, Mayor Jose Torres and the poet’s great-niece, Laura Garcia Lorca, welcomed the poet back home.

Pardoned Old furniture biggest problem prisoner

Banderas promotes his foundation

Brenan’s inn being restored

Actor Antonio Banderas is in Malaga this week to take part in the religious processions and to promote his Fundacion Fusionadas.

The inn in which Gerald Brenan lived in Yegen during the 1920s, described in his book South to Granada, is to be restored and opened to the public this summer. The first part of the restoration – the so-called “Brenan space” - will cost €25,000. This will include the improvement of two pathways the writer used in his daily walks.

The foundation has the double objective of supporting culture and education in the province and promoting economic contributions to the cancer care charity,

Cudeca. His donation of €50,000 will be used by the University of Malaga to provide scholarships for local students to study at English universities and to create a Chair of religious brotherhood studies. Banderas is a keen participator in Malaga’s Easter Week religious processions which are considered on a par with those of Seville.

FUENGIROLA. The town’s biggest rubbish problem is abandoned furniture, even though people caught doing it can be fined from €300 to €1,500. Fifty nine people have been fined so far this year for dumping furniture instead of calling in the free service offered by the local council. In all, 130 people have been fined for other infractions, such as littering the street.

MALAGA. This year the lucky prisoner to be freed by the Nuestro Padre Jesus el Rico religious brotherhood is a 63year-old man who was serving a three year sentence for fraud. The tradition started during the reign of Carlos III when, through lack of manpower, prisoners in Malaga jail volunteered to help clear bodies of people who died during a plague.

Malaga goes over to TDT

Black money on rise

MALAGA. Despite the campaign carried out by the government, quite a few people in the province were not ready for digital television, TDT, according to Andalucia’s Association of Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s Installers (Faitel). A spokesman said there is a three-week waiting list for TDT antennas, so even people who have the new TV sets with TDT will have to wait to see their favourite programmes.

ANDALUCIA. According to the Businessmen’s Confederation, the amount of “black money” last year amounted to €34,000 million, €5,000 million more than in 2007. A spokesman said consumers should realise that paying black money for services harms the country because the government collects fewer taxes and has less money to distribute. It is also unfair competition for those companies who obey the law.

ZP’s ‘recrisis’

T

hat’s the latest word for Sr Zapatero’s problems, according to El Pais newspaper. I’ve looked it up in several dictionaries – the Oxford Spanish-English, the Sopena and the Spanish Royal Academy – to no avail. It doesn’t officially exist, so we’ll have to guess what it really means.

F

rom what I’ve read it seems to be derived from the time when Zapatero wouldn’t hear the word “crisis” pronounced in his presence during the months leading up to the last general election. He was frightened it would scare the voters, who seemed to swallow his theory that Spain was suffering from an “economic slowdown” not an out-and-out economic crisis. Of course, after the election was safely won he was forced to admit that there really was a crisis – “if that’s what you will insist on calling it,” he told the reporters, who badgered him into saying the dreaded “c” word. That was the first crisis.

T

his recrisis seems to mean a repeat crisis. According to El Pais, Zapatero is going through the worst political moment since he arrived in power six years ago which, of course, the Socialists blame on “disloyalty”, presumably the Partido Popular’s. The paper says recrisis is not a technical or political concept and has nothing to do with the economy. It’s a state of mind, a sensation, an attitude. It also has nothing to do with the hundreds of measures and decrees issued by the government. It is much deeper and more dangerous than that.

one of the dullest interviews of a politician I’ve ever seen. And it wasn’t the journalists’ fault. In fact, it was the first question about his credibility that threw him. He hadn’t expected it or been prepared by his advisers on how to answer it. As a result, he came across as diffident and lacking selfconfidence for most of the rest of the interview. Even his ministers recognised that it was a wasted opportunity.

I

f he now feels alone at the top, as they say, he has only himself to blame. One of his former ministers, Jordi Sevilla, said in an interview with the Spanish edition of Vanity Fair, that Zapatero doesn’t trust anyone, not even his wife, so he tends to keep a certain distance from even his closest ministers and advisers. And once he’s decided on a course of action, he won’t be swayed from it – a stubbornness that has been pretty evident during the past six years.

H

is lack of approachability has thrown his ministers into a bit of a flummox. They know there are a lot of things going wrong but they don’t know how – or are afraid – to tell him how to put them right. You make your bed, you lie on it.

host of corruption cases are under threat of losing steam after a Madrid High Court judges’ panel ruled last week that certain surveillance tapes of conversations held between defendants and their lawyers are inadmissible in trial. The issue involves the recordings of jailhouse chats between three of the leaders of the so-called Gürtel corruption network and their attorneys. National High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón had ordered the wire taps last year and now he is facing a trial at the Supreme Court for misconduct in allowing investigators to listen in in breach of what should be considered attorney-client privilege.

I

t’s nice to know that I’m not the only one criticising Zapatero, as a few readers seem to think. According to the ABC newspaper, there are more than 250 blogs on the internet demanding the resignation of a prime minister “who lies” and is “incapable of solving the economic crisis”. One of the blogs reports hits of more than 6,500,000 since it started a few months ago. Another website – www. Zapateropinocho.com – is even making money out of ZP, selling tee-shirts, caps, even fridge magnets embossed with the sketch shown here. Prices range from €3,99 for the magnets to €10,99 for the larger items. I won’t be wasting my money. It’s bad enough having to see him on television and in the newspapers every day. I hope he’ll give us a rest and spends the long Easter break somewhere that TV cameramen can’t reach.

imposing jail terms. The landmark cases broke the traditional sentencing guidelines for criminal defendants in the US federal court system and even today, five years later, the courts are still reviewing a massive number of jail terms of convicts who stand to be re-sentenced under these top court rulings. In short, fair justice no matter at what costs.

Aznar’s gold

F

or six months, the police secretly taped talks at Madrid’s Soto Real prison between Gürtel ringleader Francisco Correa, his number two man in the corruption network Pablo Crespo and their respective lawyers as they prepare to go on trial on charges that they paid Popular Party officials kickbacks in exchange for juicy public contracts. Some of the conversations touched on delicate matters that could have been smoking guns for prosecutors if they had been allowed to be played in court. In one chat, Crespo discusses with his lawyer José Antonio López Rubal, who is also charged in the case, how to keep investigators from tracking down dirty money the suspects stashed away overseas. Some €24 million was found by Swiss authorities in different bank accounts last year belonging to Correa and Crespo.

A

I

iven the hail of criticism of ZP’s economic policy both at home and abroad, which has increased since Spain took over the presidency of the EU, his communications experts decided that a television interview at peak viewing time would be a good idea because his appearances on TV usually last 20 seconds during the news broadcasts. So they arranged a 40-minute exclusive interview with three of TVE-1’s top journalists in which he would be able to get his full message across to the public.

Martin Delfín

Legal outbreak

hat it seems to mean basically is that ZP may finally be beginning to believe that what lots of people here and abroad are saying about him being ineffective could have a few grains of truth in it. It all arises from his obsession of predicting dates for the end of the current economic crisis – what The Economist called in an article last week ZP’s “mañana syndrome”. n a witheringly critical article, the magazine accuses ZP of cowardice, among other things, for putting off much-needed labour and pensions reforms to conserve social peace and keep the unions happy. He can’t afford to alienate the unions so reforms and growth will have to wait.

Memo from Madrid

three-member panel of the Madrid High Court decided in a two-toone vote last Thursday that, despite their juicy contents, the tapes are inadmissible. While some defence lawyers hailed the decision and predicted the case would fall apart, prosecutors said that they still had other evidence to support their charges. Still, the ruling didn’t stop the floodgates from opening. Motions were filed in a host of other corruption cases to throw out criminal charges supported by illegal wire taps. Among those who are taking advantage of this new judicial precedent are lawyers for former Balearic Islands regional leader Jaume Matas who faces 24 years in prison for allegedly profiting from a bidrigging scandal involving the building of a sports complex in Palma de Majorca.

S

uch far-reaching court decisions that cause a massive outbreak of defence motions are rare. And when they are handed down they not only serve to help defendants get a fair trial but also contribute to judicial chaos and docket backlogs. In 2005 in the United States, two Supreme Court rulings did just that. The cases, United States vs. Booker and United States vs. Fanfan, touched on legal arguments on whether federal judges can increase a convicted defendant’s sentence based on facts that were not provided to a jury at trial and how much leeway do magistrates have in

I

don’t remember former Prime Minister José Maria Anzar ever going off to some poor country and caring for lepers, or inventing anything for the progress of the human race or, for that matter, even ever singing “ New York , New York .” So can someone tell me how the US Congress was duped in 2004 into giving him its highest civilian award, the Congressional Gold Medal? That’s what the Court of Auditors also wants to find out. On Monday, they opened an inquiry to see whether Aznar’s cabinet committed any irregularities in granting a €2.3 million contract to a Washington lobbyist who pushed US lawmakers into bestowing the award to Aznar. The Popular Party-backed government sneakily decided to grant the contract to the Piper Rudnick firm without announcing a bid or even publishing it in the official BOE gazette. Other than seeking the gold, Piper Rudnick did a lot of other things for Aznar. According to its annual report, discovered by the Socialists after they were swept into government in 2004, the lobby group also prepared the speech Aznar delivered to a joint session of the US Congress in February 2004 and compiled reactions from different US agencies over the Spanish government’s economic policies. But the most controversial task was perhaps “drafting the resolution” for obtaining the congressional medal, an honour which, by the way for better reasons, has been bestowed on Mother Theresa, Thomas Edison and Frank Sinatra. What a tarnishing of their legacies.

Brian Dellar Motoring in Spain author

For example: 1. Anyone planning to visit Spain with a caravan or auto caravan will be best advised to book at an official caravan camping park in advance. Most of the public parking areas by the beaches around the country are now forbidden for overnight stays by camper vans due to them not only taking up so much space that is intended for cars but also the actions of a few in leaving excessive rubbish and other "interesting smells" close by in the bushes. Any caravan found parking nearby the beach in a public area overnight will be issued with a fine as shown on the notices displayed. This law was advised by Trafico to all authorities to be vigorously enforced early last year: And all authorities are very short of

cash at this time! 2. If you are bringing a caravan trailer to Spain to import it make sure that you have a copy of the manufacturer's EU Homologation Certificate in Spanish to aid the rapìd (relatively) re-registering onto Spanish plates. If the MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) is less than 750 Kg, then it can be towed using the vehicle's registration number but it must still be registered at Trafico as a Spanish vehicle. Over 750 Kg then it must have its own registration plate but for all types and weights with the maker's official certificate it is not difficult to do this yourself as long as other regulations such as fog-light positions etc are checked and changed if need be. 3. Autocaravans must have exhaust systems to Euro 4 standard or later, otherwise they will not pass the pollution tests and cannot be re-registered. 4. With a right hand drive vehicle you must have an

unobstructed view (through windows) of 360 degrees while in the driver's seat, to permit re-registration. This applies to all right hand drive vehicles such as vans and 4x4s with a load area at tebrear where a canopy can be installed. 5. Many of the camping grounds have their own market shops so if you arrive late, you can still buy food and usually gas. There is a book available in English and Spanish listing all the registered camping places in Spain with email and phone addresses, well worth having but you can also Google the area you want to travel to on the Internet. 6. Finally, as in the UK and in the rest of the EU, people are not allowed to travel in a towed caravan while it is moving and if stopped in a roadside check, the police will take a look and fines are heavy.

Reduced Gravity

We look forward to reading The News every week, many thanks.

A very rare once in a lifetime phenomenon is about to occur. As you know, the Earth has a gravitational field that holds you to the surface. The Earth’s gravity stretches out into space and keeps the Moon in its orbit. Well, the Moon also exerts a gravitational effect upon the Earth that causes the tides to rise and fall. The Sun’s gravity also has an effect on the Earth.

AR 8T RIVI H A NG PR IL!

The column on caravaning by Jane Newman was very informative but perhaps for the sake of the readers other important information should have been supplied.

Stargazing

Professor Paril Olof of the Swedish university has calculated that from midnight tonight (March 31st) and twelve noon tomorrow April 1st the alignment between the Sun, The Moon, Jupiter and Saturn will all come together to exert a pulling force on the Earth. This force, known as the Paril Olof syndrome, will have the effect of making you feel lighter. You should be able to jump much higher into the air and if you are watching your weight then this would be a good time to go along to your slimming club to be weighed as you will weigh less.

Professor Paril Olof will himself be trying for the world record pole vault and high jump. Airplanes will not need to use as much fuel when flying provided they land before 12 noon on April 1st and birds will be able to soar much higher than normal.

after the sun has set, you should easily be able to spot the planet Venus shining really brightly just above the horizon - now look down a little and just to the right of Venus and with luck you will just be able to make out a tiny pink coloured ‘star’; this will be Mercury.

Smaller pets such as mice and hamsters should be kept in their cage for fear of them floating off.

By April 5th Mercury will have moved upwards to be sitting right next to Venus so should be quite easy to find. Use binoculars to help you find it but only after the Sun has set.

If anyone experiences this reduced gravity or can take a photograph of themselves jumping higher into the air then please contact me at ‘The News’ and we will print any photos or stories.

Venus and Mercury. If you have a clear view of the western horizon then you will have a chance to spot the tiny planet Mercury tonight and for the rest of this week. Between 9 pm and 9.30pm,

Because Mercury is so much closer to the Sun than we are we can only see it when it is either to the very far left of the Sun and visible after sunset or to the far right and visible before sunrise and because of its tiny size it is usually very difficult to spot unless you know exactly where to look. Using Venus to help you find it should make it much easier. To keep up-to-date with Ken Campbell or to take part in any of his events or lectures, or for more information visit www.kencampbell.info

The Vet in a Van scheme has now been launched, in a bid to help control the population of stray animals along this stretch of the costa and inland. The van was unveiled at the 1st birthday celebrations for CHAIN, the charity to help animals in need, and is the successful outcome of months of hard work involving CHAIN and English vet Wayne Hockenhull, who will be the man in charge of the van. Pictured are Wayne and CHAIN President Kelly Thirlwell. If people need help to neuter or treat stray or abandoned animals they should contact Kelly on 672 399 323 or Wayne on 652 309 985. The van will start to visit areas very shortly, and people can put themselves on the list for a visit. "If someone is prepared to take on a stray but is anxious about the costs of treatment and neutering then we are here to help. It could mean the difference between life in a refuge or abandoned in the campo or being placed with a family. We also

support people who, for example, are feeding cats and who want to help us to stop the population boom. Give us a call and we will do what we can to help," said Kelly. The van is fully equipped as a mobile surgery, and Wayne will be drawing on help from this year’s intake of young vet students from the UK. The scheme, launched last year, involved young students coming to Spain to get some hands on experience by shadowing Wayne on his rounds to the refuges and this year a number of students have already signed up. But Kelly and Wayne have issued an urgent plea for anyone prepared to act as host for a minimum of two weeks for the students. "If anyone has a casita, or a spare room, and would like to get involved by volunteering to put up a student and provide a B and B plus dinner then please get in touch! Accommodation is vital to the success of the project so if you can help, give us a call," said Wayne.

Social club comes up trumps for refuge Members of the Arroyo Welfare and Social Club have been busy making donations to the charities they are kind enough to support. As well as recently supporting Age Concern, last week the club, based in Arroyo de la Miel, presented 1,000 euros to Sandy Tash, President of SOS Animal Refuge. Plus Sandy left laden with bags and tins of food for the animals at SOS. She

said: "We have just moved to a new location and are busy building new pens and carrying out some work to improve the refuge so this donation is very gratefully received. The club is very supportive of local charities and these kind gifts to us help to make a real difference." For more information on SOS visit www.sosanimals.org or telephone 620 782 484.

During the past few years the special services and prison services have insisted that all vehicles used to carry dogs must carry water. In the UK there is a special squad of twelve prison dog handlers that each have their own dog vehicle. The officers are on a twentyfour hour call to attend any prison in the UK where there is a riot. All the handlers have special vehicles that are selfcontained and are required to carry one week’s supply of clothing for themselves. They are also required to carry one week’s supply of food for the dog and one week’s supply of water. Over the past few years it has been noted that the dogs when

given water from other areas were not performing well and some had encountered either hyperactivity or under activity. Since the new ruling came into effect there have been no reports of change in behaviour. I recommend that those that enter competitive work or dog shows should always take their own water. If you have a caravan and go away for a few weeks take water. If you are going for more than a few weeks then mix the local water with your own water on a 50/50 basis then your dog can be weaned with no side effects. Those that have a problem can write to me at david@thedogman.net

Easter processions around Coin Easter time in Spain is a very big event on the year’s calendar. All the towns spend months beforehand arranging costumes for the events and the churches are all decorated with beautiful flowers. In Coin on Good Friday at 11am the results are announced for the winner of the “Via Cruces”. Practically every street is decorated with floral crosses and the competition is fiercely fought. In Coin, the processions with the figures of the crucifixion to resurrection will be paraded by the brotherhoods as follows: Wednesday March 31st at 10pm: The procession of Christ of Pardon and Our Lady of Hope. Thursday April 1st at 6pm: the procession of the Lords Supper, and at 8pm the procession of the Nazareen and Virgin. Friday April 2nd at 8pm is the procession with

Christ on the cross and Christ in the coffin. And lastly on Sunday at around 12.30 is the procession of the Resurrection. Processions leave from the main church square which is off Calle Feria where the Unicaja bank is on the corner.

Flamenco - a wellspring for music, dance and fashion WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean

Flamenco is as much a part of the fabric of Andalucia as its Moorish heritage and "white pueblos".

A

nd although flamenco can be heard and seen throughout Spain, and has become internationally known, its roots lie firmly in the arid soil of the South. t has a complex and dark history, borne out of tragedy, as well as incorporating the rich influences of settlers and visitors -and for many years it was performed in secret.

they sang songs that reflected their grief and heartache flamenco was born out of pain and was performed in secret by the gypsies, who expressed their anguish and despair. It was not until 1782 that the Leniency Edict of Charles III gave the gypsies the right to perform in public and by the 19th century - no longer in hiding - the gypsies began to display their music and dance in the cafes and plazas.

S

F

I

ome believe that the word flamenco originates from the Hispanic- Arabic word fellahmengu meaning expelled people. The conquest of Spain by the Moors brought mixed cultures and religions, and Muslims, Christians, Jews and gypsies happily co-existed. The 700 year rule of the Moors is what can still be so vividly seen in the Spain of today.

B

ut by the time of the reconquest it was deemed that all should be Christian - the Jews found themselves banished, the remaining Moors had to convert and the gypsies were hounded. Many went into hiding or were imprisoned and

lamenco, with its songs, the guitar, and the dance, became an inherent part of Spanish culture and has now become one of the most popular music and dancing styles in the world, with famous performers like dancer Joaquin Cortes and guitar player Paco de Lucia. Nowadays, at feria time throughout the towns and pueblos the music and the gorgeous flamenco frock take centre stage.

T

he origins of the flamenco dress lie in the work dresses worn by Andalucian women in the 19th century when they accompanied their livestock

trader husbands to Seville s Feria de Abril from 1847 onwards. These were simple calico with a few frills but prettily coloured and designed to accentuate the women s bodies. By the time of the1929 Ibero-American Exposition, Spain s upper classes adopted the dress, flamenco became more of a professional art form and it was adopted as part of mainstream entertainment. The dress became a must have accessory for Feria.

T

he original Guitar shape was designed to enhance the woman s figure and mask its defects and over the years the dress has varied according to fashion. In the 1940s and '50s the dresses were long and frilly and women added combs, flowers and hidden money pockets handy these days for the cigarette packet and lighter! By the late 50s the dresses were shortened to show off the shoes and by the '60s it went halfway up the calf or even up to the knee and the calico was replaced by tergal - a base of cotton and embroidered cloth. As the skirts became shorter the sleeve was made longer.

B

y the '70s the skirt once again was lengthened to reach the ankles and by the '80s everyone was mad for Baroque lace and satin and printed tapestries before returning to a simpler and sensuous form using silky smooth material in the '90s. By the millennium the two piece had made its appearance. The dress is constantly reinvented while maintaining its essential design - and it has found a place in the world of haute couture. Seville s Vittorio and Luchino created an exclusive line of flamenco frocks and Joaquin Cortes has been dressed by Armani. And the body that oversees the flamenco fashion industry has put annual turnover at more than 120 million euros. Local shops sell feria dresses, the big cities have shops with windows full of the glamorous dresses as spring approaches and Spain gets ready to party, and you can even order one from Amazon.

A

nd Malaga is about to host two shows spotlighting four great flamenco artistes. José de la Tomasa is a widely acclaimed flamenco lyricist and singer.

Laura Vital is a flamenco singer who has scooped prizes and awards in flamenco festivals and competitions, including the Competition for Young Performers at the Seville Flamenco Biennial and the National Flamenco Art Competition in Murcia. Dancer Belén Maya is the daughter or renowned flamenco dancer and choreographer Mario Maya. They will put on a show of the best flamenco designed to evoke Lorca s "duende".

Y

ou can see "Recital" by de la Tomasa and Vital, and "Bailes alegres para personas tristes" by Maya at the Canovas Theatre, Plaza de El Ejido,5 in Malaga on Wednesday April 7th at 9pm. Tel: 951 308 902.

A

nd on April 28th it will be possible to see Cañizares, one of the modern day’s most influential flamenco artists in Spain. His mentor was internationally renowned Paco de Lucia and in 2008 he received the music award for Best Classical Music Performer. He will appear at 9pm at the Canovas Theatre.

M.A.P.S. Charity Don’t worry - there’s more Golf Circuit 2010 curry to come at El Potro

Following on from the success of the previous two charity golf days hosted to raise funds for the Malaga Animal Protection Society, M.A.P.S. are delighted to announce the details of The M.A.P.S. Charity Golf Circuit for 2010. The first competition will take place at the Marbella Golf and Country Club on Sunday April 25th with a 9 am shotgun start with Stableford rules. The cost is €65pp including shared buggy and an excellent buffet lunch. There will be fantastic prizes to be won plus a charity auction. Players can either register by e mailing

sales@mapss.eu or by phoning Rachelle on 689 604 966.

Other competition dates (costs vary) are Santa Maria Saturday June 26th, course to be confirmed on September 25th or 26th, and El Chaparral on Friday November 19th. A discount will apply to players playing all 4 games. A coach is being organised to pick up and drop off at the Ingenio Centre (Eroski) Velez Malaga with other stops on the way to be confirmed. Cost of the coach will be based on numbers requiring it.

El Potro’s curry nights have proved to be so popular that the special will continue to be served every Friday night from 7.30 pm on for the foreseeable future. The number of bookings, compliments and thank you emails for the curry buffet was exceptional and definitely showed that, due to popular demand, it was worth making a regular feature. One of the most popular dishes is a fiery Pakistani dish of Minced Beef and Chillies, a hot little number that’s not for the fainthearted, made from a recipe that Chef Mathew “borrowed” from a friend

in Rochdale but don’t be put off by the heat. There’s a choice of six or more main curries including a Balti, Rogan Josh and Madras plus some milder Kormas, with an excellent choice of starters including Chicken Tikka, Tandoori Drumsticks and Tandoori Lamb chops accompanied by homemade Bhadjies, Samosas, Nan breads and Chapattis - all very tasty. The “eat as much of what you like” open buffet is 10 euros per person and table bookings are recommended by telephoning 952 470 284. Other special days include the Quiz Night with Baz on Monday, the Sunday Carvery and regular live

entertainment on Saturdays with either the five course gourmet special menu or à la carte. On Saturday April 10th Rob Davey will headline with his Hits of the Beatles

They include Carlos, a Spanish immigrant/ aspiring actor/gigolo recently arrived in Los Angeles; Charley, his best friend who he knew from England, who is a drama queen of a woman and romantically desires her best friend despite his sexual orientation; and Kenny Potter, one of his students, who seems to be curious about his professor beyond English class. Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang BY SUSANNA WHITE Starring Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhall The first outing for Nanny McPhee was charming but made no dent on cinema audiences in the US, so the producers are hoping that by adding Maggie Gyllenhall to the cast as the harassed mother, the movie will make its mark stateside. And there is no reason to suppose it won t. Nanny McPhee herself (Thompson) has done the screenplay and produced a funny and touching script that will delight the youngsters and definitely

amuse the grown-ups. Nanny McPhee has magic powers and in this followup the action has moved on to what appears to be the second world war quite a few years after her first outing, although her warts haven t aged at all. Mrs Green (Gyllenhall) is trying to keep the family farm going while her husband (Ewan McGregor) is fighting in the war. She is having to cope with her horrible brother-in-law Phil (Rhys Ifans), who is

trying to force her into selling her husband's half and her constantly fighting children. So the scene is set for the mysterious Nanny McPhee, with warts, moustache and sticky out teeth, to come to the rescue. She uses her magic stick to impose order and tame the kids as well as helping to save the farm. A well crafted and smart family movie - don t expect 3D but it does have some great visuals.

T

his week I may be skating on thin ice (yeah, what’s new?) but hear me out and you might be surprised, as I think I have a point. Now let me set the record straight, I am a huge, and I mean huge, “Who” fan, but “Tommy” is terrible. I hadn’t seen “Tommy” for a while and as I’ve been in a rock ‘n’ roll mood lately, I thought I’d give it a watch and tell you how great it is. Unfortunately, unlike a fine wine it had not improved with age. Those of you who disagree with me, please, I encourage you to dig out your copy and watch it yourself. This movie should not be inflicted upon the younger generation and could only be viewed as a decent movie if one was on acid.

L

et’s start with the director, who is probably better known for saying “I know my films upset people. I want to upset people,” and at least he kept to his word on that. Ken Russell’s movies generally degrade women and always seem to have some raunchiness going on in them, “Women in Love” earned him his worldwide acclaim.

How To Train Your Dragon BY DEAN DEBOIS, CHRIS SANDERS Voices by Jay Baruchal, Gerard Butler Dreamworks, the animation studio behind Shrek and Madagascar, throws itself into 3D and the world of dragons. Hiccup, a teenage Viking (Baruchal) doesn't fit in with his tribe s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slaying - in fact, he is hopeless when

he attends dragon-slaying school. But after meeting a wounded dragon called Toothlesss, he befriends the creature and discovers that there is more to a dragon than he had at first thought. And his new found dragon skills breach the rift between him and his dad Stoick (Butler) and

win him the affection of villagers. It s probably not going to make the top three of Dreamwork s output but will definitely charm the kids. And of course the studio is gearing itself to unleash the newest Shrek movie later this year - and that will also be in flavour-of-the-year 3D.

T

he only pleasing performances were those of Keith Moon as Uncle Ernie, Paul Nicholas as Cousin Kevin and of course the infamous Pinball Wizard as portrayed by Elton John, but unfortunately were unable to save the movie. There is no doubt in my mind that “The Who” were one of the best rock bands Britain ever produced, but everyone has their limitations and Townsend certainly overstepped his boundaries on this one.

M

y problem with “Tommy” is that apart from the bad acting, songs that go on forever and a strange religious cult thing going on, the story is not very clear. Like when Tommy’s Dad is in his bedroom so is he really there or is he a ghost? And if it really was his Dad, where the deuce had he been for all those years? I am assuming Dad was killed which is why Tommy ended up deaf and dumb, but what did they do with the body? This is then followed by almost an hour of “Tommy, can you hear me?” and of course his mother does what any loving parent would do for their handicapped child, she takes him to the Marilyn Monroe church where the communion is acid and whisky.

O

liver Reed’s singing (though not good) was, I doubt, intended to be as comical

as I found it, as at times he put me in mind of Vic Reeves. I found Ann-Margaret’s performance irritating, her rolling around on the floor did not improve her singing skills and her voice was not well matched for that kind of material. Lots of people seem to be rather fond of Tina Turner’s role as the Acid Queen and her voice certainly stands out, but she was one scary gypsy lady. Roger Daltrey’s ability to maintain his vacant expression throughout the majority of movie was a feat in itself, but once he regained his senses I longed for his vacant expression again. Daltrey’s only saving grace were his cartwheels, which I enjoyed immensely.

This is an emotional week for you where you could be feeling vulnerable for some reason, perhaps you are letting go of the past in some way. The two areas of your life that you need to focus in on are your home and family, strong connections will be re-forged. You are probably making plans for the future as you work at getting your life in order. The material side of your world will become clearer the more organised you are. The key to your success this week is to be prepared. The next few days are likely to be hectic with a lot of changes coming your way and you will feel less anxious the more control you have over your environment. Familiarity generally means security to you and you can feel out of sorts when confronted with something new. In reality though the unfamiliar could bring real security – perhaps the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence? If you stick to your guns and take the lead in a difficult situation you will be able to direct the circumstances to a solution that is ideal for all. Financial possibilities and openings are evolving and the key to maximising your opportunities is to socialise and network. Friends and acquaintances bring expansion and growth. Keep your feet on the ground and try not to allow things to get too serious or heavy, rising above negativity increases your chances of prosperity. There is a delicate process going on in your home life and family will be turning to you for emotional support and practical help over the coming week. This is a time to get on top of things as your energy levels may be quite high. Your powers of attraction are buoyant at the moment and some good fortune shines down on you lighting up the material and financial areas of your life. This is a good time to make future plans. You never do anything small: you want it on a large scale – whether it is in the way you love or the impressions you make on the world. This week you are larger than life and whatever you have your heart set on then keep taking steady, strong and deliberate steps to make sure you get it. Your determination is impressive, just be careful that you don’t push someone too hard, they may share common goals but may not have the same stamina that you do. You need to believe in yourself and know that whatever challenges you face they will indeed pass - nothing stays the same. You may feel a bit emotional and need to spend some quality time with loved ones, perhaps you have had to make a sacrifice of some kind, in order to achieve something far greater later on. All the skills and talents you possess, mix them with belief in yourself and a knowledge that you have what it takes, and you can’t go wrong.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Well , it’s Easter again and a lot of readers have asked me to repeat the recipe for hot cross buns. They are delicious so get mixing! If the weather holds up, we’ll do the piece on growing your own herbs next week. The ground should be less boggy by then but won’t be at the hard-as-a-rock stage yet. Ideal for planting.

Hot Cross Buns

(Serves 6)

Ingredients: ● 560gr plain flour ● 1 teaspoon salt ● 30gr yeast ● 375ml milk ● 95gr sultanas ● 60gr butter ● 45gr sugar ● 1 egg ● ¼ teaspoon mixed spice ● ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Method ● Cream the yeast with one teaspoon each of the sugar and flour, add lukewarm milk and mix well. Cover, stand in a warm place for 10 to 15 minutes or until mixture is frothy. Sift flour, salt, sugar and spices, rub in butter, add beaten egg, sultanas and yeast mixture and mix well. ● Cover bowl with a clean cloth, stand in a warm place for 40 minutes until dough doubles in size. Punch the dough down, turn out onto a floured surface and knead well until the dough is smooth and elastic. ● Cut dough into three equal pieces, cut each piece into five, making 15 buns in all.

Knead each into a round shape. Put buns onto a lightly greased 18cm x 28cm, 4cm deep tin and stand in a warm place until buns reach the top of the tin. ● Sift 70gr plain flour and mix to a paste with 80ml water. Put into a small piping bag and make a cross over each bun. Bake in a hot oven (475-500ºf / 200-230ºc) for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with glaze made by dissolving 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon gelatin and 1 tablespoon hot water together. ● Cool on a wire rack. ADVERTISING FEATURE

Why hair turns grey Photos of President Obama taken before he ran for president and then more recently show that there are now areas of grey where there used to be only dark brown hair. But it's not from stress because it doesn’t actually turn hair grey – the colour can't change once produced by hair follicles. If a single strand of hair starts out brown (or red or black or blond), it's never going to turn grey. Your hair follicles produce less colour as they age, so when hair goes through its natural cycle of dying and being regenerated, it’s more likely to grow in as grey beginning after age 35. However, stress can trigger a common condition called telogen effluvium, which causes hair to shed at about three times the rate it normally does. The hair grows back, but if

you’re middle-aged and your hair is falling out and regenerating more quickly because of stress, the hair that grows in may be grey instead of its original colour.

The vast majority of people with grey hair have age-related greying. However, sometimes greying hair indicates an illness, especially if it occurs at a particularly young age.

The Somerset country home of camp Carry On and Up Pompeii star Frankie Howerd is on the market for just £450,000. It remains as it did when the star died in 1992 - full of features but needing central heating and other reforms. The purchaser will get first option on buying the house contents, plus a 33 per cent share of the Howerd estate .including royalties - which could yield an £18,000 a year income. Frankie starred in just two Carry On films but appeared to hilarious effect in other movies, TV shows, chat shows and in stand-up and no innuendo was too risky.

The house and its contents are as they were when the comic lived there and the memorabilia includes - titter ye not - the star's false teeth and toupé. A portrait of Frankie hangs over the fireplace in the sitting room and there is a chaise longue where Elizabeth Taylor would recline while visiting. Howerd bought the house with his manager and partner Dennis Heymer back in 1969, for £19,662

and they lived there until Frankie died. Dennis Heymer continued to live there until his death in May last year and his partner, and the couple s close friend ,Chris Byrne, is now in charge of the sale and would love to keep the legacy together. If the purchaser of Wavering Down decides against buying the furniture, movie memorabilia and other items, then it will go to auction.

Sassy star smarts at box office flop Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction star Uma Thurman has set an unwanted record for her latest movie as a stressed out mother. The movie was released this month in the UK but has been withdrawn after just 11 people went to watch it on its opening weekend. "Motherhood", also starring Anthony Edwards, Minnie Driver and Jodie Foster, has turned into the mother of all flops. Takings for the weekend made just £88 - and there was just one cinema goer on the Sunday, raising just £9. The movie performed dismally in the US too -it took just over £40,000 when it opened last September -

one of Thurman s greatest hits was Kill Bill 2, which made £14.2 million on its opening weekend in 2005. Veteran movie critic Barry Norman agreed that the film had had some poor reviews but was was "astonished that so few had bothered to see a movie with Thurman as

the lead. Its spectacular failure has led to a row between the producers and the UK marketing company, who chose to launch it in just one London cinema. If you want to see what the row is about, then you can...the movie has already been released on DVD.

Kamil’s Cross AN EASTER STORY WRITTEN BY P. Tate

My name is Demetrius and you have probably deduced from my name that I am a Greek.

I

am a carpenter by trade and some have stated that I have a natural skill; a gift, an artistic flair if you will, when working with wood. It was a trade passed down through my father and his father’s father, something I would guess that has become a natural inheritance for my family. This trade, the working of wood, has taken me on many travels during which at one time I owned a nice lucrative carpentry workshop in Jerusalem. True, the land was in constant turmoil; with Arab against Jew, or Arab against Arab, or Jew against Jew or a combination of the two against the occupying Romans. At times it was hard to tell who was fighting for what against whom! But at the end of the day they all need chairs to sit on, tables to eat from and chests in which to store their worldly goods.

T

he Romans were a good source of trade; they appreciated good workmanship in furniture and other more utilitarian constructions, plus they always paid on time. The Arabs loved to haggle and barter and I had many entertaining discussions concerning the price of goods that still make me laugh today. Initially I found that the Jews were mainly humourless when it came to money and they always thought that I was charging them excessively, that is until they came to know me and the quality of my work.

T

he one main problem with Jerusalem was procuring wood. The surrounding landscape had been arid, with soil that was like sandy clay; not the most efficient medium for growing tall sturdy trees, though a selection of nasty thorn bushes did seem to thrive. Some shipments of timber came from the north, with the best supplier being an Arab in Lebanon who supplied wood that had a magnificent grain and would permeate the workshop with its wonderful perfume when being cut and worked. The furniture I made from it was very much in demand and as such I priced it accordingly.

M

y workshop catered for all levels though, and my two sons learned the trade making various everyday items from cheaper timber. I also had a local Judean boy as an apprentice, his time given to me by a father as payment for a bill. Kamil was a hard worker and quickly learned the trade with a skill for embellishing wood to reveal the designs of its grain. He enjoyed whittling little animals from board

remnants and once made a miniature chariot complete with a team of four horses which ended up being sold at a very good price to a wealthy Roman official. I encouraged my sons and Kamil in this type of pastime because it was a good practice for honing their skills and helped them to find where their true talent as carpenters lay. Plus it brought in a little money for them which I let them use freely since the skill in the management of cash is also very important for a young man to learn.

I

t was a profitable time for us and one that not only procured my comfortable retirement but also established the future of my sons and Kamil. Our work was not all for beauty. Our wood was used to make yokes: to carry water, tether oxen to wagons, for Roman Legionaries to carry their equipment. Windows and doors of every size and shape left our workshop. We even made oars destined for the Roman fleet. The one item required by the Romans that took a quantity of large timbers to make was the crosses used for their means of execution - crucifixion. Executions in this manner were not as frequent as they had been when the Romans first arrived in Judea, but when it was used the Romans made a show of it as an example to others. So they insisted that the crosses be well made. There had been some incidents where crosses, from inferior carpenters, had broken when raised with the weight of the condemned person on them. These incidents resulted in a very messy business of re-establishing the poor victim and a number of complaints from the local officials were received by the Roman Governor. Though bad for some, as I have said, it was good for us and the business.

I

remember early one spring where there had been troubles in the city at a time when a large group of pilgrims arrived following a man they called the Messiah. There was fighting in the streets and even disturbances within the Jewish Synagogue. Though these pilgrims may not have been responsible for all this unrest, the local priests used their influence to persuade the Romans that this was the case. Subsequently this led to the arrest of this man; he was beaten, tried, convicted and sentenced to death. Unfairly so, some said. But then, when has the law mixed with politics and religion ever been fair? It should have come as no surprise to me when a messenger arrived requesting another cross for the

executions next day. This was a bit of a problem for us since, although we kept a couple of crosses in storage, the Roman court had been busy dealing with offenders and these had already been allocated.

M

y sons had left for the day, Kamil and I had remained behind to close up the workshop. I was nursing an injured hand caused by my negligent use of a chisel so the main task of the construction of this cross fell to Kamil. The only suitable size timbers we had in stock were of the Lebanese wood that I mentioned, so regrettably we started preparing this wood and I was determined that the Romans were going to pay a nice price for such splendid material. It took us until well after midnight to complete, mainly due to Kamil’s uncompromising craftsmanship. The surface of the wood was nearly mirror smooth with red veins running through the lighter brown timber, its edges were finely chamfered and the join at the cross-piece was invisible. I put my hand on Kamil’s shoulder commending him, as we stood back to admire our finished work. We were both in a bit of a daze from tiredness and the overpowering scent of the wood. Due to the late hour we both slept at the workshop with the fragrant shavings as our mattresses.

W

e were woken next morning by someone hammering on the double doors of the workshop. I opened the doors and was surprised to find half a dozen fully armed Roman Legionaries standing there. The senior soldier explained that there may be trouble, so his detail was sent to deter any interference with the means of execution before they were collected. The condemned men were usually marched down the street that passed the workshop to pick up the crosses en route to the hill outside the city. He posted his men, and then inspected the crosses. On coming to the cross Kamil and I had completed overnight he remarked that it was of unusually good quality. I explained the use of a superior wood and stated that I expected a higher price for the item. The soldier just shrugged and said that it wasn’t his responsibility and that I would have to take it up with the judicial administrators. He also mentioned that one of the condemned men was a Nazarene who had been a carpenter before he became a Rabbi so maybe this cross would be suitable for him. I believe that

this was a piece of soldiers’ black humour.

W

hen my sons arrived, we man-handled the crosses into position near the open doors and it wasn’t long before we heard the procession of the condemned as it wound its way through the streets towards us. A small crowd in front of the military escort was kept clear of the workshop doors by the points of the Legionaries javelins. The condemned men collected their crosses helped by my sons and Kamil. The last man, the Nazarene, came forward to collect his cross; I saw that he had been beaten and that a terrible ringlet of thorns had been jammed onto his head. The cross was lowered onto his shoulder guided by Kamil and I watched as the man caressed the wood with one hand and then spoke to Kamil. I did not hear what was said since his voice was lost in the wailings of the crowd and the sharp barked commands of the soldiers. The procession started off again, Kamil walked a few paces with the crowd before he stopped to look back at me with tears in his questioning eyes. I nodded to him and he turned to follow the procession. The section of Legionaries formed up and marched off in the same direction, as my sons and I closed the large double doors.

A

sombre mood settled on the workshop and it matched the weather that was turning unseasonably bad. The sky was dark with grey heavy clouds that foretold a pending storm. We carried on with the various jobs that needed doing as the day wore on and Kamil had still not returned. Since the weather was getting worse I sent my sons home early and waited for him alone. The storm finally broke with a screaming wind that lashed sand and water against the workshop

walls. The sun seemed to have disappeared. A short while later Kamil arrived back; he apologised for being so long and then moved to his bench where he worked quietly. The day was not right in some way so I told Kamil that we would close the workshop. He looked at me and I could see an older man in his features - an execution is not a pretty sight, especially a crucifixion. I put my arm around his shoulder to comfort him and asked him what the man had said after shouldering the cross. Kamil replied that the man had simply thanked him but that it was not what the man had said. It had been his eyes - the man’s gaze had been calm, grateful, though it seemed to hold great pain. I kissed Kamil’s head and told him to go home.

J

erusalem had been quiet for a while after that, a fact unfortunate in that it proved the Roman means of example was effective. But an underlying feeling of discontent had still lingered in the region. There were rumours about the carpenter who had been crucified: his followers said that he had risen from the grave, but others said that the followers had merely stolen his body. Even so, the events caused the man’s followers to adopt a low profile in order to escape the notice of the local regime.

I

t was not too long after this that my sons went their different ways to set up their own trade. I decided that it was a good time to retire to my Greek homeland and left the Jerusalem workshop under Kamil’s administration. In the evenings sometimes, as I sit on my veranda looking out at my estate of olive groves, I think of the events of that time. Whilst I sip cool wine and listen to the multitude of cicadas, I wonder what became of Kamil’s cross and reflect on the man who bore it.

Toyota to halt production at British plants Toyota has announced it is to suspend production at its plants in Britain and France after a global sales dip in the wake of its mass safety recalls. Toyota will halt work at its British factories for 12 days from next Monday to Thursday and again from April 6th to 9th.

Button’s slick gamble earns a deserved victory On the track where last season Jenson Button started his winning streak, Formula 1 sparked back into life after the last drab race with one of the most exciting races seen for many years - incident packed right from the first corner. Following a sizzling qualifying session on Saturday, for Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, many were predicting the pair would dominate the race.

when we get to the next race we can do it again because it this feeling, it is so good," Button said.

Instead reigning World Champion Jenson Button stood atop the podium, with Vettel's chances dashed by mechanical error and Webber's by a string of mishaps culminating in the crash into the back of Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap. Button can thank his bravery and luck. "It's a lot easier for the driver to feel the conditions and for me I didn't have a balance at all on the inters - I was really struggling and I lost a couple of places so I thought, let's get in and stick the slicks on," Button said. "There was a dry line, a few places were a little bit wet, but when I went into the pit lane I thought I'd

Jenson Button proved once again that his smooth driving gets results

made a catastrophic mistake because it was soaking wet in the pit lane,”he added, although ultimately he was proved so right. Renault's Robert Kubica drove a steady race to finish second in front of Ferrari's Felippe Massa, with Alonso fourth Rosberg fifth and Hamilton sixth. Michael

Schumacher's hopes of sparking his comeback to driving with a fifth Australian GP win were effectively ended on the opening turn when he copped the backwash of a clash between Button and Fernando Alonso. It left Alonso's Ferrari facing in the opposite direction and was one of several first lap incidents - the most

spectacular being the crash by Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi - with the field of 24 reduced by four. After changing teams following his world championship triumph, the 30-year-old Button was delighted to win at just his second start for McLaren. "I feel like I am building in confidence and hopefully

That is not the case at Red Bull, which endured a disastrous day. Vettel was forced from the race shortly before the halfway mark with braking problems when dominating from the front.

disadvantage caused by the tyre changes, was chasing hard with Hamilton when the error occurred under braking on the second last lap."I think that was one of the drives of my life, but unfortunately due to the strategy I was put further back than I deserved and then I was taken out by Mark Webber," the former world champion said.

The Red Bull duo may drive the fastest car on the circuit but in two races to date this season both have underperformed, Vettel due to mechanical issues, an excuse Webber cannot use.

While it was not Red Bull's greatest day, it was an improvement for F1, for the Melbourne race was in stark contrast to the season opener in Bahrain, universally written off as one long yawn.

Button was the first man into the pits on lap five but did not enter again. His teammate Hamilton was clearly furious that he was called in for a second tyre change when seemingly going well in third place. Webber, who passed Massa three times yet was still chasing him down late in the race due to the

The intermittent rain made the race an intensely tactical affair as teams pondered when best to bring their cars in for tyre changes.

Ford sells Volvo to Chinese for $1.8bn The deal was announced yesterday but is still subject to negotiations on Volvo's pension deficit, debt and working capital. Ford said it did not expect to receive $1.8bn once deductions for those items were included. Although the company's chief financial officer Lewis Booth declined to give any guidance on how much money would change hands when the deal closes in the third quarter of this year, it could be significantly less than $1.8bn. When Ford sold Jaguar Land Rover to Tata it injected £600m into the company's pension fund. Insiders suggested the final figure was likely to be around $1.6bn. Ford paid $6.5bn for Volvo when it purchased the company in 1999. Since then Volvo has been persistently making losses. Mr Booth said: "From a

Ford point of view we think it is a fair price for a good business. We are happy with the deal we have achieved with Geely."

"It was disappointing not to have a good grand prix (in Bahrain) but here . . . it looked like a very exciting race," Button said.

Pendleton takes sprint title Track cycling speed queen Victoria Pendleton eased the pressure on medal-shy Britain by winning her fourth consecutive and fifth career sprint title at the world championships on Saturday. She just missed out on Keiran Gold by a tyre’s width, after a dispute about the winner Krupeckaite (Lithuania) leaving the red sprinters line.

St Patrick’s Day fun with the local bowls clubs Fancy dress from Mijas and Superbowl Lawn Bowls clubs meant lots of fun, and games with a difference Brian and Pam Attwood organised the day at Mijas, where the weather and temperature set the scene for a superb day. A different skill was needed on each game some of which were very tricky but great fun. Prizes were given for a variety of different skills like first to touch the jack on a certain game or end. There were refreshments while a raffle was held in aid of a special Cancer charity that one of the

Other prize winners were Josie Bloom, Danny White, Bernadette Thomas, Wilfred Newman, Ivan Smith, Christine Wilson and Sheila Graveling. Meanwhile over at the Superbowl, green, orange and white were the predominant colours and Guinness was, undoubtedly the most favoured drink throughout the day. Brian Judge and Irene Bhreatnach had organised sponsors for this “full-day” event and the Club was grateful to Deutsche Bank for their sponsorship on this occasion.

The eventual winners,

Mike Goodwin and his team, had convincing wins in the Singles and the Pairs game against Betty and Hilary so it was surprising to find Betty’s team in the “shake-up” going into the last game. Having been so consistent, the two leading teams both lost their last 4’s game but Pat Fisher’s team could not make up the points difference despite achieving a 10-8 victory ( 3 ends win ) against Craig Lewis’ team in their final encounter. Prizes were presented to Mike and Betty’s teams together with commemorative packages for Jamie Ali ( Owner ), Craig Lewis ( Captain ) and Brian Judge ( Event Co-ordinator) plus a special prize for the best Fancy Dress which was, once again, won by Christine

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again Last Friday I took advantage of the improving weather and the free entry offer at Parador Golf Club in Malaga to take a look at the Open de Andalucia. The course is very compact so it was extremely easy to hop about from one match to another. After a while though I decided to stick with the group of Darren Clarke, Nick Dougherty and Miguel-Angel Jimenez. I joined their match at the sixth hole and was immediately struck by the good humour the match was being played in despite none of the three being in sparkling form. At the short 11th hole Jimenez was puzzled by the fact that he could only see a red flag when all the other flags were white until Clarke pointed out that it was set against a white hotel and noted to much amusement: “Well it’s your tournament, you should know.” Over the weekend the players who came to the fore were last week’s runner-up Oosthuizen, Sam Hutsby from Hampshire and Robert Coles. The course record was lowered several times over the weekend to finish on 62 set by Paul Waring but the steadiest player was the South African Oosthuizen who triumphed by three shots over Richard Finch and Scot Peter Whiteford who sadly had his driver stolen on Saturday night. It was Oosthuizen’s maiden victory after five second-place finishes which included last week’s event in Morocco and he certainly deserved the prize. It was great to see the stars of our game at close quarters and Seville is not too far away to go to the Spanish Open in May. Till the next time keep your head down. Dave

Second straight title Poor results cost Malaga five points as win for resurgent Els Els was presented with the trophy by they chase safety After losing to Valencia in midweek Malaga were hoping for a better result at home to fellow strugglers Tenerife. After a dull first half in which both teams hardly created a chance, the

second half started brightly. Malaga began to dominate and looked set for victory when Apono bagged the opener after 66 minutes after good work from 16 year old substitute and Coin boy Juanmi. But the visitors refused to

Ernie Els overcame a few nervous moments on the final day, with four solid pars to wrap up a one-under-par 71 and win the rain-delayed Arnold Palmer Invitational by two shots at Bay Hill. He earned back-to-back victories for the first time in seven years and set himself up as a favourite for the Masters at Augusta National. “I’d like to put this jacket in some dye,” Els said at the trophy presentation. “Some green dye.” "I kind of limped home but the work I
