UK Minister steps into homes scandal The British government has stepped into the debate over Spain’s planning laws which have blighted the retirement homes of many Britons. The Foreign Office’s Chris Bryant, Minister for Europe, and British ambassador Giles Paxman visited Albox in Almeria on Sunday to talk with eight British families who have been told their homes are illegal, and who have demolition orders hanging over their heads.

Mr Bryant warned them that the demolitions were damaging Spain’s image abroad and would dissuade foreigners from buying property here, which would undermine efforts to regenerate the hard hit housing market.

n 02 - General News ICKHAM’S
WORLD Beware email con...
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
On Friday I received an email, ostensibly from one of our people here at The News, saying that he'd been mugged at gunpoint in the UK. It said that he still had his passport but needed money to clear his hotel bill and get a flight home and that he promised to pay me back when he got home. Of course, the first thing I did was phone the guy it was supposed to be from and, yep, he was safe and well here in Spain. We traced the IP address to someone in Nigeria and Scotland Yard has been informed, and weren't in the least bit interested. So, if you get an email anything like this, delete it, it's a scam. On Thursday night when we got home, I was calling in my cats and walked up to the gates where there appeared a dog. He looked a bit like a brown and white Springer cross with no tail and was exceptionally well behaved – sat when he was told to, didn't jump up at you and was quite happy to wander along with my other dogs the following morning. He had a tag but the telephone number was only partially visible, the rest having been worn away by the other tags. In the morning we could see that his name was Colacao (just like the chocolate drink – it suited him) and that he had been to a local doggy beauty parlour. As he was a bit unusual without his tail, I contacted them, they contacted the owner and Colacao was reunited with his dad by lunchtime.

UK Minister steps into homes scandal [...] Mr Bryant cautioned: “The housing market in Spain is not going to recover quickly if pictures of bulldozers knocking down expats’ homes are appearing in British
newspapers.” He said everyone he had spoken to said they wanted a solution but “wanting one and finding one were two different things”. The upshot of the
meeting was that the Junta de Andalucia has agreed to appoint a full-time official at each of the consulates in Malaga and Alicante who will provide British expatriates with advice on
property regulations, health care and residence requirements. These officials will be in place by April. But Mr Bryant advised people buying property anywhere abroad, not just in
Spain, to go to extra lengths to make sure everything was legal. He warned them against trusting lawyers who appeared to be independent but who in fact are working for the local land developer.
Countrywide rallies against abortion bill
ETA man gives himself up
Thousands of demonstrators have marched through most of the country's major cities last Sunday to protest against a bill that will make it easier for women to seek an abortion.
An alleged member of the Basque terrorist group ETA gave himself up last Saturday at a police post in Biarrtiz airport. Javier Atristain Gorosobal, alias Golfo, managed to escape when the Guardia Civil arrested wanted ETA member Ibai Boebide in February as he travelled by bicycle between Asteasu and Villabona in Guipuzcoa province. Atristain is wanted in Spain in connection with the transport of explosives and other bomb-making materials from France to Spain in 2008.
In Madrid, families with young children carried banners, flags and balloons and chanted "No to abortion! Yes to life!". The bill, already passed by parliament and set to come into force in July, introduces abortion on demand up to 14 weeks into a pregnancy. In defence of the bill, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said
the main difference between the new bill and the one passed in 1985 was that women cannot now be sent to jail for terminating their pregnancies. At present, a pregnancy can only be terminated in mainly Catholic Spain in cases of rape and when there are signs of foetal abnormality. Currently, Spanish women can also end a pregnancy if
their physical or psychological health is at risk. In practice, the last category has been used to justify the vast majority of abortions - of which there were 112,000 in 2007. Several members of the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, who participated in the Madrid march, said the PP would overturn the law if they won the next general election in 2010. But
opposition leader Mariano Rajoy said he believes the Constitutional Court, where the PP has lodged an appeal, will not allow the law to come into force. Meanwhile, in Barcelona as some 7,000 antiabortionists gathered for the march, police arrested about 40 women who were attempting a countermarch in support of abortion on demand.

Labour Minister Celestino Corbacho jumped into the pensions debate again on Tuesday when he said in a TV interview that he would recommend people to join private pension schemes. Sr Corbacho started a huge debate about pension reform in February when he said the government was thinking of raising the retirement age to 67. Partido Popular spokeswoman Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría pointed out that it was the current Socialist government which criticised private pensions schemes back in 2004. She advised the government to “get serious” because such Uturns generated alarm among the general public.

Can we tolerate Moslem machismo? 1985. A group of local men wait for the women’s buses to arrive in Plan.
Women's caravan saved town The town of Plan, which nestles against the Pyrenees in Aragon province, has been celebrating the 25th anniversary of the famous Caravan of Women, an idea the local men came up with to find wives and stop the village from dying. It all began on January 3rd, 1985, when they watched the 1951 film “Caravan of Women” by William A Wellman in the local bar, which was about 13 bachelors who agreed to put an ad in a paper to look for wives. Current Mayor José María Fantova was one of the organisers of the caravan and the fiesta that was held on March 7th, 8th
and 9th when hundreds of women arrived in buses from Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza. Plan, which had a population of 200, was visited by some 10,000 people during those three days, including many men from other nearby towns who were also looking for wives. The fiesta made a big splash in the national media and on TV and was held for another three years during which some
40 couples tied the knot. Only three ended in divorce. The town, now with a population of 7,000, and others like it in the Gistau Valley still have a problem as people drift away because of the lack of jobs in the area. The local people hope that the 25th anniversary celebration, which continues until the end of June, may work the same sort of miracle that the first caravan did.
That was the question asked by Judit Alberich, the mayoress of Cunit, in Tarragona province, recently when giving evidence in a case of harassment brought by Moroccan-born Fatima Ghailan, against four members of the town's Moslem community, among them the iman. Now a Spanish citizen, Ms Ghailan acts as a cultural mediator between the town's non-Moslem and Moslem communities. She told the judge of several cases of Moroccan women
who were locked in the homes by their husbands who do not want to integrate in the local community and will not allow their wives to do so either. Tolerating other cultures is a politically sensitive issue but the mayoress said what was happening today in Cunit set the town back centuries. Apologists, both Spanish and Moroccan, have said that many of the 1.3 million Moroccans living in Spain come from very conservative rural societies but Ms Alberich
Fatima Ghailan.
and Ghailan aren't swallowing that excuse. They fear that tolerating Moslem machismo will encourage Spanish men to go back to their bad old ways.
Second record drop for road deaths Only five people were killed on the roads last week, making it the second least tragic since records began. The first was the third weekend in November. Until March 7th, there were 247 deaths,
93 less than for the same period last year. If this trend continues till the end of the year, 2010 could go down in history as the year with the least road deaths of all.

Rosa Díez defies Catalan opponents
Ministry prepares terrorist victims list In anticipation of a new law on compensation for victims of terrorism, the Interior Ministry has drawn up the most complete list ever produced so far.
Union Progress and Democracy (UpyD) leader Rosa Díez announced last Friday that she intended to intensify her party's efforts in Catalonia with a view to capturing votes in next year's regional election. Hours earlier, the conference she was scheduled to give at the Politics Faculty of Barclona University had to be cancelled when a group of some 50 pro-separatist students booed her off the stage, shouting “Fascist” and throwing tins of red paint. Dean Salvador
Cardús, who also supports Catalonia's independence from Spain, tried to stop the students, demanding respect for the freedom of expression, but to no avail. Former Basque premier Juan José Ibarretxe received similar treatment a week earlier when he tried to give a talk at the
same faculty. When Diez made her announcement, she said many Catalans were “fed up” with the nationalist and antinationalist antics of the other parties and were asking for a different kind of politics. She said her party was the logical option for such people.
A total of 9,522 in Spain have been the victims of the terrorist activities, with 1,382 losing their lives. So far, the survivors have received a total of just over €722 million in compensation. A Ministry spokesman said the new law would increase
two months. If Sr Bono's plan is accepted, the session would begin in January instead of February and carry through until the end of July instead of the end of June. The main opposition
party, the Partido Popular made a similar proposal a year ago which was accepted by the governing Socialist Party and all the smaller parties. But no further action was taken. In an attempt to
not to publish articles that will affect their sensibilities. The new law also envisages giving a higher profile to actions that perpetuate the memory of the victims, which the spokesman said had been lacking in the past.

Hundreds massacred in Nigeria attack Over 500 men, women and children were killed in an attack on Christian villages near the city of Jos in Plateau state, Nigeria, at the weekend. Jos has been under a military curfew since January when at least 200 people died in clashes between Christians and Muslims. Officials said the villages had been attacked by men with machetes who came from nearby hills. Troops have now been deployed in the area and dozens of arrests have been made. Acting President
Goodluck Jonathan has ordered security forces to prevent more weapons being brought into the area. He has also sacked the country's national security adviser, Sarki Mukhtar. Jos lies between the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria and its largely Christian south. Analysts say the latest attack seems to be in reprisal for clashes in January, which
claimed the lives of at least 200 people and displaced thousands of others. Hundreds of people have fled from Jos in the aftermath of the fighting, the International Committee of the Red Cross said. Local politicians claim the killings are of a religious or sectarian nature but independent observers have
said it is a struggle between ethnic groups for fertile land and resources in the region known as Nigeria's Middle Belt. A spokesman for the Christian charity Stefanos Foundation said one village had been almost wiped out. He said: "It was mainly the helpless, like small children and then the older men, who cannot run, who were slaughtered."
Cuba slams hunger striker Communist Party newspaper Granma, which reflects government policy, has said the Cuban government will not be "blackmailed" by dissident journalist Guillermo Farinas, who is on hunger strike to seek the release of ailing political prisoners. Sr Farinas, 48, began his strike on February 24th, a day after Orlando Zapata Tamayo died following an 85-day hunger strike to protest at prison conditions. Granma said Western media were "calling attention to a prefabricated lie" by reporting Sr Farina's case. Sr Farinas has said he will refuse food and water until the Cuban authorities release the country's 26 most vulnerable and ailing political prisoners, out of a total of some 200. He has said he is not seeking the overthrow of the government or greater freedom of expression in the country. Some 43 Cuban political prisoners released
a statement in support of his protest, saying they were "profoundly touched" by his sacrifice. But Granma said Sr Farinas was "an agent in the service of the United States". The case of Zapata, whom human rights campaign group Amnesty International declared a prisoner of conscience, drew widespread international condemnation and calls for the release of all Cuba's detained political dissidents. His death marked the first time in nearly 40 years that a Cuban activist had starved himself to death to protest against government abuses.
Cuban dissident Guillermo Farinas shouts anti-government slogans on the outskirts of Havana in 2005.
Before meeting US President Obama on Tuesday, Greek prime minister George Papandreou called on the US to help crack down on the financial speculators he blames for exacerbating his country's debt woes. He said he wanted to see the US impose stricter regulations on hedge funds and currency traders. Mr Papandreou, who met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington on Monday, said: "Unprincipled speculators are making billions every day by betting on a Greek default. That is why Europe and America must say 'enough is enough' to those speculators who only place value on immediate
returns, with utter disregard for the consequences on the larger economic system not to mention the human consequences of lost jobs, foreclosed homes, and decimated pensions." Ms Clinton said the US wanted to work with other nations to reform the "unregulated financial market that globally moves money at the speed of sound, if not light, and leaves in its wake all kinds of consequences that governments have to contend with". Greece is seeking assistance from fellow European Union nations to make it cheaper for it to borrow funds on the international financial markets.
Colonel reveals sprees
MPs in row over reforms
A former North Korean colonel has written a book describing how he spent two decades shopping in Europe for the dictatorship in Pyongyang.
Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari suspended seven Indian MPs for disrupting proceedings in the upper house (Rajya Sabha) on Monday during the reintroduction of a bill to reserve a third of all seats in the national parliament and state legislatures for women.
The book, At the Dictator's Service, was published in Austria, where Colonel Kim Jong-ryul has lived under cover since his defection in 1994. In the book, he says Vienna was one of his regular destinations - the hub for his shopping sprees. He says he bought everything from spy technology and weapons to luxury goods like carpets, sidestepping the trade embargoes. The book describes the deep divide between the lavish lifestyles of North Korea's leaders - and the poverty of its people. Colonel Kim says it was this injustice that led him to fake his own death in 1994 and defect to Austria. Now he fears that the North Korean secret services will hunt him down and hurt his family back in North Korea, but says he has no regrets about breaking his silence.
The MPs had shouted slogans, snatched papers from Mr Ansari's table, torn them and thrown them at him. The bill was first proposed in 1996 but never passed. But this time it has the backing of India's main parties. At present women make up just 10% of the lower house of parliament, and significantly less in state assemblies. While India's main parties back the legislation, smaller socialist parties argue it will reduce representation of minorities and socially disadvantaged groups. They want set quotas for women from Muslim and low-caste communities.

Facebook murder prompts questions The family of 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall, who was raped and murdered by convicted sex oender Peter Chapman, is questioning how closely police monitored his whereabouts. Chapman, 33, was jailed on Monday for a minimum of 35 years for the murder. During his trial, it emerged that, following his release from prison, Chapman was able to move around the country, seemingly free from monitoring. Merseyside Police said there
was a nine-month gap between officers realising the sex offender had fled his home and them issuing a nationwide wanted notice for him in September 2009, one month before the murder. Chapman had been known as a convicted sex offender in the Merseyside
area since 2000. Ashleigh's mother, Andrea Hall, said people like Chapman "should be tagged". Ashleigh was suffocated and dumped in a farmer's field near Sedgefield after agreeing to meet Chapman, who she saw in October last year on Facebook where he
was calling himself Peter Cartwright. Mrs Hall also warned parents to find out who their children were talking to on the internet. She said: "Just put the message out that please, parents whose kids are on Facebook, please ask them to tell you who they're

they knew who they were, "as there are unscrupulous people in the world with malevolent agendas". It said there were a variety of measures people could use to protect themselves from unwanted contact and that Facebook strongly encouraged their use.
Ex-judge backs Venables anonymity All dogs to be insured Baroness Butler-Sloss, who originally made the decision to grant anonymity to James Bulger's two killers when they were released in 2001, has warned that Jon Venables could be murdered by vigilantes if his new identity is revealed. Justice Secretary Jack Straw said earlier the police and director of public prosecutions had advised him that revealing why Venables was back in prison could "undermine the integrity of the criminal justice system process". In questions from MPs, he did
confirm he had seen "no allegations" against Venables that he has killed or seriously injured anyone. Denise Fergus, James's mother, had earlier called for more information. She said during a TV interview that she was "sick of them closing doors in my face."
The Venables' recall, she said, had left her "very emotional". She added: "I have had sleepless nights and I am not eating again I have had to pull my kids out of school. Several media outlets have reported that Venables was recalled to prison on suspicion of
offences related to images of child abuse. Venables is not currently facing any charges but a criminal investigation is under way. Tory backbencher David Davis called on Mr Straw to protect Venables' identity "so that we don't see lynch mob law in this country.
Government proposals to tackle dangerous breeds could mean every dog owner in the UK will have to take out insurance against their pet attacking someone. The government wants to amend the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act, under which four types of dog the pit bull terrier, the Japanese tosa, the dogo Argentinos and the fila brasileiros - are banned. It wants to tweak the law so that the breeds are banned
from people's homes, rather than simply from public property, as is currently the case. Police and councils would also get powers to force the owners of dangerous dogs to muzzle them or even get them neutered. Ministers say they are responding to public concern about dogs being used to intimidate or threaten people. Each week, more than 100 people are admitted to hospital after dog attacks.

Urbanisations Official hit hard by cars cut economic crisis back
Flooded houses to be demolished The town councils of Jaén and Cordoba have announced their intention to demolish houses that were built in areas known to be prone to flooding. Jaén council will demolish a maximum of 58 houses, some of which were built too close to normally dry river beds. Most of the houses to be demolished in Cordoba are near the airport, where some 150 families were evacuated two weeks ago.
All the owners will receive compensation and Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has reiterated the promise made by Deputy Premier María Teresa Fernandez de la Vega that they will be given all possible financial help. Junta de Andalucia Premier José Antonio
Griñán was in Madrid for talks on Monday with the PM and other ministers to discuss the “exceptional situation” of Andalucia caused by this winter's uncharacteristic bad weather. Specific measures have yet to be announced.
One of the less visible effects of the current economic situations is the headache it is causing for the so-called Communities of residents throughout the province.
Malaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre has decided that austerity begins at home – and has cut back the City Council's car fleet from 28 to eight. This will save the council €108,000 a year.
Not only do their boards of management have to chase residents who are behind with the payment of community dues, they now have to cope with the developers who have been unable to sell their properties and have stopped paying the quotas.
After March 15th, the deputy mayor and the protocol councillor will have a car, as will three members of the Socialist opposition.
According the the College of Property Administrators, they could owe more than €1 million around the province, where many developers stopped payments more
than two years ago. A spokesman said that before the economic crisis, “the developers religiously paid their part of community dues for the flats and houses they had reserved or had not sold because it took them sometimes as little as two months to sell them”. Now, according to the Provincial Builders and Developers Association, the province has a stock of 25,000 unsold properties.
The remaining three cars will be used by the 17 members of Sr de la Torre's team on request and using a rotating system. The alternative transport for official events will be “public transport or taxis”, the mayor said.

Fuengirola loses first foreign councillor The town's councillor in charge of the Foreign Residents and New Technologies departments, Suvi Kauranen, has abandoned public life to concentrate on her businesses. Ms Kauranen, who is Finnish, only worked part time in the foreigners' department but had to work full time after she was put in charge of new technologies. This meant she had less time for
her real estate business and bar, which need all her attention in these difficult economic times. She said her resignation was purely for economic reasons - her councillor's salary was not enough to pay for someone to look after her businesses. Mayor Esperanza Oña said she was sad to lose Ms Kauranen but understood that the crisis affected some more than others.

Time running out to repair tourist beaches A spokesman for the Andalucian Federation of Beach Businesses has said he fears that there will not be enough time to make good the damage done done by the bad weather to hundreds of miles of beaches in time for Easter week. Sr Norberto del Castillo said that along the Costa del Sol, the beaches at Marbella, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Torrox and Malaga city had all been badly affected. However he said some of the most visited beaches along the Huelva, Cadiz and Granada coastlines were also in a pitiful state.
Wettest winter brings tragedy
Last weekend's rains have turned this winter into the wettest one in living memory - and there's no immediate end in sight. High seas temporarily closed the ports of Tarifa and Algeciras. Five passengers on the Tangiers ferry were injured on Friday when a huge wave smashed several portholes as it approached Algeciras, showering dozens of people with glass. It was several hours before the ferry, which had 125
people on board, could make the safety of the port. The Melilla-Malaga ferry also spent several hours on high seas before it managed to enter Malaga port during a lull.
Evacuations Meanwhile, several families had to be evacuated from their homes in Manilva and Estepona because of flooding, which also
affected Marbella, Benahavis and Mijas. People living inland did not escape the bad weather either. Fifteen people were rescued from six houses in Alhaurin de la Torre and the the A-7057 at Cartama was closed by flooding. In Malaga city, huge waves invaded the promenades and fire men were kept busy removing dead trees, lamp posts and awnings which the wind had torn free from their stanchions.
Fuengirola to Berlin
Online paper celebrates 2nd
FUENGIROLA. The town's tourism delegation, headed by councillor, José Sánchez, left on Tuesday morning for Berlin to attend the International Tourism Fair being held there from March 10th to 14th. Together with London's Travel Market, this is one of the most important events on the tourism calendar.
ALHAURIN. The online Diario de Alhaurin celebrated its second anniversary on March 7th. Since its foundation, it has been visited by more 614,000 people from all over Europe, the United States and South America. It not only provides hard news about happenings in the town and surrounding areas but gives full coverage of all the town's major cultural events.
Still no fire station
Weather halts beetle
COIN. Seven months after its inauguration by the full Town Council, the fire station built to cover the Guadalhorce Valley is still not in service. The official reason given is that a new direct access road has to be built. Without it, the fire engines would have to cross the Sierra Gorda urbanisation and the authorities want to avoid affecting the residents.
MARBELLA. Cold wet weather has stopped the voracious red beetles in their tracks by affecting the development of the larvae which should be ready to turn into the adult beetle. They need temperatures of above 15º C and sunshine before they can make their destructive progress along the coast. Last year 15,000 palm trees in Marbella alone were destroyed.

A glimmer of understanding
Animal blood bath
E
I
very now and then I run across a book or article which opens my eyes to aspects of political life here that I may have overlooked – mainly because there's just too much to learn and remember in the first place.
S
omething that has puzzled me for years is why the Socialists seem incapable of admitting that the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, exists or has the right to have any say in government. Yet at the same time they go out of their way to turn people against it, so they must know it's there. The favourite tactic is to insist that the PP is just Franco in disguise, when it's quite obvious to anyone with eyes in their head that people who voted for the PP are just ordinary, run-of-the-mill Conservatives. Admittedly the PP does have the equivalent of Maggie Thatcher – namely Madrid Community Premier Esperanza Aguirre but she stands out from all the other PP national and regional leaders like a sore thumb.
A
nyway, the scales began to drop from my eyes while I was reading a book by Robert Elms who began to dig under the surface in search of the “real” Spain in the late 1980s. It's called Spain: A Portrait after the General, and it's well worth reading if you come across it.
W
hen Elms came here the Socialists had been in power since the third post-dictatorship election in 1982. A friend tells Elms that the election was the great test of Spanish democracy because the military did not try to stop the Socialists from taking power. But the friend, called José Luis, says that for him the even bigger test would come when the Socialists had to hand over power after losing an election. Because, José Luis tells Elms, “we are a de facto one party state”.
T
here was literally no serious opposition while the PP evolved through a bewildering change of names from Adolfo Suarez's Christian Democrat party, the UCD. And this is where the Franco slur comes into the picture - Suarez had been the general secretary of the Falangist “Movimiento” just before Franco died but he was one of the so-called young
“technocrats” who believed in modernising the regime and were gradually taking over from the older Franquistas. And as someone once said “who better than a Franquista to dismantle the regime” - which is exactly what Suarez did in just a year after King Juan Carlos appointed him prime minister.
I
t also didn't help that Manuel Fraga, Franco's Tourism Minister, played an important role in the evolution of the PP – founding one party after another, leaving politics then coming back again until he founded the PP in 1989 as a “centrist reformist” party. However, Fraga preferred to be the boss man in his native Galicia and left the PP in the hands of the then premier of Castilla-Leon, José Maria Aznar.
B
ut at the time of Elms's talk with José Luis, then PM Felipe Gonzalez was lamenting the lack of a coherent opposition to his government, saying it was detrimental to a truly democratic debate in Spain. His detractors, according to José Luis, were saying at the time that the Socialist Party (or PSOE) was dictatorial and secretive, nepotistic and self-satisfied, unable to accept criticism and unwilling to listen to arguments. (Sounds familiar!) They also said the process of government consisted largely of dictates handed down by Gonzalez for parliament to ratify them and the judiciary to coalesce.
G
onzalez got away with it because, as José Luis pointed out, for 40 years Franco alone made all the nation's important decision so people had no way of learning to be a politician. So in the 1980s, the only active politicians – the far left and Communists who had survived the Franco years underground – were too much a reminder of the Civil War, and the Right was impoverished because Franco did not encourage great minds to compete with him, even if they were on his side. José Luis says: “What we really need is a new generation of politicians from the right, from the Partido Popular, who are completely free from the past.”
T
hat generation finally emerged under the leadership of José Maria Aznar who inflicted a deep psychological wound on the Socialists by beating them in the 1996 election and then rubbed salt into it by beating them again in 1990. Meanwhile, most of the best Socialists had fallen from grace along with Felipe Gonzalez (left) whose last years in power were marred by corruption scandals. As a result, the party was taken over by an intellectually inferior bunch of young Turks who had none of the brilliance of those earlier Socialists but retained all their faults.
t was inevitable. Politics had to mix in with the long, overdue bullfight debate taking place in Catalonia. Even the Dalai Lama jumped into the fray, lending his support to a ban of this disgusting spectacle. It is not surprising that the voices who want animal blood to continue flowing inside Spain’s dusty rings come from the conservative sectors of society, the Popular Party trumpeting off. While other European nations are stepping up enforcement for the protection of animals in their own countries, many Spanish lawmakers want this ancient barbaric tradition to take priority over cruelty and suffering.
C
atalonia has become the first region in the peninsula to begin discussing the introduction of a law to officially prohibit bull slaughters from taking place. Many communities outside Barcelona have already issued ordinances banning the event but now there is a good chance that a regional injunction may be forthcoming as the debate moves forward in the Catalan parliament. It is a good move. The government of the Canary Islands issued a similar prohibition in 1991 - nevertheless, it unfortunately has decided to keep cockfighting legal within the archipelago. But regions such as Madrid, where the PP governs under the auspices of the party’s audacious regional premier Esperanza Aguirre, arguments have emerged that bullfighting is part of Spain’s cultural heritage. “Look at Goya, Picasso, Federico García Lorca and beyond to Hemingway and Orson Welles. They were interested in bullfighting as an art because it is a cultural asset deserving protection,” Aguirre reasoned, forgetting that these past aficionados are long gone. Valencia, another PP stronghold, has also taken a similar stance.
A
ppearing before Catalan lawmakers, philosopher and long-time bullfighting opponent Jesús Morenstein compared the spectacle to “female circumcision.” Scientist Jorge Wagensberg was perhaps the most effective in emphasising the need for the ban. Pricking the palm of his hand with one instrument used in the “cultural event,” he asked: “Does it hurt? Of course it hurts.” If tickets aren’t being sold to the public to witness a pig slaughter or hunting, Wagensberg argued, they should also not be sold for an afternoon bull massacre. Good point. But the highlight of the debate peaked when the Barcelonabased animal rights group ADDA, the lead campaigner for the proposed bill, published a letter on its website from the Dalai Lama who said there was “considerable evidence” that bullfights were “a cruel practice which publicly inflicts atrocious pain to innocent” animals.
N
othing short of adding petrol to the fire, another angle to the controversy surfaced on Sunday. “60 Minutes,” the popular and respected CBS television news magazine, devoted an entire segment over the weekend to
Fernando and Cayetano Rivera Ordóñez, the immensely popular bullfighting brothers whose debonair lives are intensely followed by the Spanish gossip press. Both articulate in English – they spent a part of their youth in the United States – the two described their passion for the ring, explaining it was family tradition and defending their zeal for the blood fest. CBS was flooded with complaints, mostly bemoaning why the report avoided touching on the demands by animal rights. The entire segment can be seen on CBS.com.
Y
es, bullfighting once played an important part in Spanish life but today it is deemed unacceptable by the entire European community and in the United States where there are tough laws penalising animal cruelty. The season in Madrid begins in May and I am certain that there will be more animal rights protests than ever before.
Not ready for Esperanza
I
s Spain ready for a female prime minister? I would have to say “yes,” for a long time now, but not for Esperanza Aguirre. Last week, the regional premier of Madrid announced publicly that she was ready and willing to take over the reins of the PP from Mariano Rajoy should he decide to step down. That would put her in direct line for a shot at Spain’s leadership in the 2012 election or earlier if the race is called sooner, which many believe will be the case judging by our financial mess. Aguirre has neither the political tolerance nor maturity to lead this nation. Her most recent vociferous attack on her PP rival Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón is one good example. During their spat for control over the Caja Madrid savings bank board, she tried at all costs to keep the mayor s favourite candidate from securing a PP spot on the board. Instead, the seat went to a member representing the United Left (IU) party. When an open mic at an event last month caught her telling her aides that she felt “lucky” for taking the seat away from “the son-of-bitch,” the entire Spanish political spectrum raised its eyebrows in amazement, wondering what this woman is capable of saying on the world stage. Her diplomacy is as tacky as her left toe.

San Pedro The letter in your February 24th issue regarding the outright disregard by the State of small and medium sized businesses is only a very small tip of the iceberg. If any business is unlucky enough to provoke a local worker to drag it to the Juzgado de lo Social (Employment Tribunal) there is every chance not only of bankruptcy on the spot but the confiscation of all personal assets belonging to the administrator even if it does not belong to the S.L.itself. This can follow emabargoes as closely as one month and the assets auctioned in the very court rooms with no attempt to obtain a reasonable price.
security.
Most workers know this and therefore try to invoke it with every crafty means at their disposal. Employers are subjected to rude handling and assumed guilty of every charge against them which they have to prove false. As most professionals know, this is very difficult. The employee lies could be thousands of euros of non existant overtime, self acclaimed salary levels for work not defined in the contract and even perhaps, accusations of wrongful dismissal when the worker was the one to leave in front of witnesses (which are usually not accepted as such because they are assumed biased in favour of the employer).
One foreign hotel in Algeciras was fined over forty thousand euros over two waiters dismissed for spitting in front of clients. One school on the Costa paid a veritable fortune for dismissing an employee who stole school fees. Another foreign owned hotel paid twenty thousand odd for a member of staff who wanted to join her husband in Seville and dismissed herself violently. The time left on her legitimate contract was only two weeks. Attempts to settle out of court were foiled by her lawyers who demanded huge sums but which in the end would have proved more attractive than facing the shame and squalidness of those trials.
Whilst all this is going on and compensations settled, the worker has to be paid full salaries right up to the day of the sentence. The average bill therefore, is around fifteeen thousand euros plus 45% of the salary for unpaid social
The whole process, which means travelling to Malaga, entails carrying every disgruntled available witness around during all the proceedings and being subjected to a rudeness and unfairness unheard of in
Of all the cases I have monitored, including my own, these kangaroo courts have led to the closure of the businesses and consequent loss of jobs of the remainder of the staff with all the regulatory compensations that could, again, lead to further court proceedings. Because these courts are known to rule in favour of the employees always, it is the intention of those who intend to leave anyway, to try and invoke it when they know their contract will come to an end soon.
Europe where such cases are not even allowed to go beyond the right to hire and fire with justifiable dismissal. It is therefore very dangerous and extremely expensive to hire and fire in Spain. It is now in fact the most expensive process in Europe. My suggestion therefore is to avoid creating employment and simply manage with self employed administrators or family and friends. If employment is to be countenanced, then whatever anybody may say to the contrary, every bit of paper must be carefully checked out,. contract details spelt out clearly with allowance for any other type of work that could be done in an emergency etc with a qualified employment specialist and not just any Gestor since many of them are incapable of helping in the case of one of those Tribunals. Whilst the employee does not even have to turn up and the crafty legal respresentatives know all the employee loopholes, the employer has to appear alongside his lawyer or risk the judicial reprimands which can be rather intimidating. Europe has been aware of this for some time and stands behind their dismantling, but the extreme left occupies these worker platforms and the best advice is to avoid them even when being blackmailed by staff and their legal representatives. All this is but one of many dangerous factors that have to be taken care of with respect to the employment of anybody in Spain where the book can be thrown at you regularly.
The Aula Del Cielo (Classroom of the sky) is a portable planetarium that brings the wonders of the night sky direct to your children’s own school or college. Snr. Francisco Galvez has been the director of the planetarium for almost 20 years and is recognised as a professional authority amongst the Spanish education system. He has asked me to be the English speaking presenter for him so that he can now offer his service to English speaking schools and colleges. The planetarium is a huge inflatable dome about 3 metres high by about 4 metres wide. It takes only a few minutes to erect usually in the school hall or Gym. The children climb inside the dome and recline against the inner walls - using hi-tech audio visual equipment the stars and planets are projected onto the inside of the dome for an out of this world experience the children will never forget! We can display the positions of the stars from anywhere on Earth and at any time of the year. Images of the constellations are then projected over the star patterns to show the students exactly how the ancients came up with the names for them. Younger children enjoy shouting out the names of Leo the Lion and the Great Bear with, of course, the Little Bear. The return journey to Earth really makes their heads spin! As the ages of the different classes goes up we alter the level of education, from basic constellation recognition to explaining the
planets, galaxies, nebulae, star formation, navigation etc. right up to in-depth cosmology for the older students. It makes for a very exciting variation to the usual classroom approach as it is something that the pupils will remember long after their visit. Most of the schools arrange for a regular yearly visit to continue with the courses. Each session lasts for 45 minutes with 15 minutes question and answer time, so up to 5 different classes per day can be accommodated. We’ve found that we usually have to run an extra session for the parents! Classroom talks can also be given using dramatic PowerPoint presentations on many different aspects of astronomy and space travel: my Apollo 11 moon landing presentation uses models of the lunar landing module and even a life size cut out of an astronaut on the moon that the children can be photographed next to as a keep sake. It is more than 40 years since Apollo 11 landed on the moon so for today’s students most of their parents probably weren’t even born at the time! To book your school’s sessions either contact Snr. Galvez direct at www.auladelcielo.es or go to my website for further details. Vote! Anybody who is a resident and empadronada in Spain is allowed to vote in local and European elections. To do this, you need to get a form called “Censo electoral de ciudanos de la Union Europea, en españoles, residente en España” from your local town hall. There's even instructions on the back in English to fill it in. Then all you have to do is give it back to your town hall. This is your right. Have a say in what goes on in your area.

Washing your pet Not many people are aware that washing a pet can cause stress, it is not a natural thing to do. Most of us will shampoo the dog to get rid of unwanted odour.Dogs do everything in their lives by odour. Dog meets dog, they sniff at each other. Study your dog when he is looking in the distance, watch his nostrils - they are scenting. A dog will want to smell a visitor to the home. By washing your dog you are washing away his identity. That is why they roll over in the ground, they are trying to get their identity back. A good tip, however ,to prevent yourself being soaked when washing a
dog is to place your hand firmly on the neck, dogs will not shake if you do this. If you adopt a dog from a shelter it is a good idea to wash the dog thoroughly and allow the dog to roll in the new area, this would comfort the dog in his new surroundings. Often dogs misbehave when a home has new furniture, the smell has changed, it makes them uneasy. Caravanning in Southern Spain WRITTEN BY Jane Newman
With the horrible weather we’ve been having thoughts of holidays come to the fore and, if you don’t want to be stuck in a hotel in one place, what better way to spend your holiday than touring in a caravan. Of course, caravans come in all types, shapes and sizes from the very small 1 person style to huge twin axled 8 person types, all of which can be towed but you’ll need to check the weight that your car can tow before purchasing one. Add an awning and you can double the size of your living area.
You must also be sure that the caravan is registered in the country of origin as you will have to have all the paperwork to re-register it in Spain to be legal here. In the UK, it is rare for a caravan to be registered but an official receipt will do. The process for re-registering is quite lengthy but well worth it in the end. Another option is a motorhome which combines your vehicle with your living accomodation. Again coming in all shapes and sizes you can go from the 2 berth VW Camper to very big Winnebego motorhomes. On the larger models, you have the option of fixing a carrier on the back of the vehicle to take a small motorbike so you don’t have to drive a huge vehicle while exploring the narrow lanes of typical Spanish villages. There are not too many sites along the coast in the Andalucia area going north
that are any good - most of the land that they were on has been sold to developers unfortunately - but moving along the N340 from Malaga there are a couple in the Torrox area (a quite nice one is inland a bit), the Motril area has two that are practically on the beach that are quite good and there’s one in Almeria just outside Roquetas. These sites all seem to have gravel or shale bases and are nothing like you would expect to find in the UK or in Southern France. However, for the purposes of touring, they are worth a visit. If you go southwards past Gibraltar there are lots of good sites in the Tarifa area that have grass pitches and good, clean facilities. Tarifa is best known for hosting the world windsurfing championships so expect it to be a bit blowy! The town of Tarifa is an interesting place - very Moorish and with some good restaurants that are
quite cheap too. Just a bit further on you’ll come to Conil where there is a particularly good site with excellent facilities that is run by Dutch people - thus the site is well kept and very clean. There you will also have the opportunity of renting a double pitch so you can have plenty of space for sitting out and sunbathing (if the rain ever stops, that is!). From both Tarifa and Conil you can explore all the coastline that saw the Battle of Trafalgar and to the west of Conil, it’s an easy drive to both Jerez and Cadiz for the day. If you want to go even further along the coast - don’t forget you are now on the Atlantic coast - after another couple of hours fairly easy driving you can be in Portugal’s Algarve where there are various caravanning and camping sites between the border and Point St. Vincent.
Even further afield France has excellent caravanning sites but, during the spring and summer months it would be wise to book your pitch in advance. Caravanning is a great way to get around and see areas you might otherwise miss. It gives you the opportunity to get up when you feel like it and eat in your own “home” having shopped in the area for local fresh produce which is part of the fun of touring, or out at whatever restaurant takes your fancy. You’re your own boss and can do whatever you want what a great way to travel!

ABOUT Coin market time change The La Trocha Thursday market / rastrillo is growing fast and it has been decided to take advantage of the lighter evenings so it will be open at the new times of 4pm to 8pm every Thursday. The market is held in a section of the undercover car park. It is hoped that these different hours will also attract a more varied mix of customers and traders. As the new times coincide with the busiest period of the centre the size of the market, and therefore the number of stalls available, is limited. Home made pies, cakes and preserves etc. will be available from the new food hall section of the market which will be situated inside the centre, on the ground floor. A pitch will cost €6. For more information please call 647 647 637.
How much?? Just in case, like all of us at The News, you're wondering what the rainfall has been since it started last September, reader Alan Ellis, who has an official Met Office rain guage, has sent in the following information:Rainfall since the end of summer 2009 in mm (which is the same as litres/sq.m) is:September 10.6 October 19.4 November 16.0
December 226.8 January 193.6 February 236.9 March so far 49.0 The wettest 24hrs was February 15th/16th with 91.9mm. (The rain guage is always emptied at 9am). That's 752.3mm so far – over three quarters of a metre this winter - so no wonder roads are being washed away and hillsides are slipping all over the campo! Let’s hope for some sun soon.

the best drama ever! email: info@coinlife.info web: www.coinlife.info
The Hurt Locker BY KATHRYN BIGELOW Starring Jeremy Renner The Oscars were billed as the battle between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. The biggest grossing, most expensive movie of all time versus the low budget Iraq war movie which had not made much at the box office. And for once, money did not talk.

Green Zone BY PAUL GREENGRASS Starring Matt Damon Another movie designed to test whether audiences are ready for stories set in war torn Iraq , the Green Zone brings together Greengrass and Damon for the first time since concluding their mega successful collaboration on the Bourne trilogy. Damon stars as Roy Miller, a patriotic soldier searching out weapons of mass destruction in Baghdad. But they seem to have mysteriously
disappeared - if they were ever there - and he starts off on a mission to uncover the truth. As he pursues the source of the information he meets a Pentagon chief ( Greg Kinnear) who doesn t seem too troubled by the mystery, and a CIA boss (Brendan Gleeson) who hints at a cover-up. Given the pairing of Damon and Greengrass, the movie will probably have a bigger success at the box office but see Hurt Locker too.
W
ell, with so much hype and prediction I guess it was a true Hollywood plottwist that left Avatar hanging in the wind at this week’s Academy Awards ceremony. Despite the bookie’s odds and the crystal ball rubbing of those in the know (and even some of us not in the know), this year’s mega-film hope lost out to a previously little known and relatively unseen indie movie about American troops in Iraq, called the Hurt Locker.
N
ther big awards on the night included Sandra Bullock as Best Actress for her film The Blind Side which we discussed on these pages a few weeks ago and Jeff Bridges as Best Actor for his portrayal of a wayward Country singer looking for the right woman to turn his life around in the musical drama Crazy Heart. The theme song for this film is called ‘The Weary Kind’ and it won the award for Music (Original Song). It’s definitely a good song title for a down-on-his-luck country singer who has lost his girl, his dog and his mojo. Actually, I know you should try to be accurate when reporting on such things but I’m just guessing that he lost his dog.
ow in true Hollywood style, the Hurt Locker just happens to have been directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the ex-wife of James Cameron who brought Avatar to the World. This kind of battle of the exes plays right into the hands of us media observers and the whole David verses Goliath Oscars battle is born anew, with David winning more Oscars than you can shake a liposuctioned Hollywood finger at, naturally.
nglourious Basterds suffered the biggest losses in the nominations to awards ratio. With a whopping eight nominations and yet only one award for Christoph Waltz as Best Supporting Actor, this weird war film that was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, failed to hit the spot.
Y
D
ou have to spare a thought for Mr Cameron and his 12 year project to bring his beautifully shot fantasy sci-fi to life. I wouldn’t mind betting he feels just a little miffed that his blockbuster failed to hit the big notes with the members of the Academy. Not that Avatar came away empty handed. It still won the award for Art Direction and the one for Cinematography and obviously, as everyone who has seen the film would have predicted, the award for Visual Effects.
O
n the other hand, the Hurt Locker swept the board with the Directing award, the Film Editing award, Best Picture, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Writing (Original Screenplay) awards. Not a bad trophy cabinet for a film which had a limited release, limited budget and a cast that includes none of the big Hollywood names associated with your average big hit movie. Sounds like Slumdog Millionaire all over again. Maybe there is a pattern emerging.

isney-Pixar’s Up came away with the best Animated Feature Film award as well as the award for Music (Original Score). Visually it had nothing to compare with the amazing animation spectacle that was Avatar but it was a good film and it was fun to watch.
S
tar Trek was one of my favourite films of 2009 but it only just scraped through with an award for Makeup. Shame really as I thought it was one of the most watchable films from the whole bunch. Young and old Spock were fantastic together. I’d have given Zachary Quinto the Oscar for best Actor if I had been in charge, as I thought he brought young Spock to life in a way that made him seem more Spock than Leonard Nimoy himself. At least it has opened the path for more Star Treks.
S
o I guess the moral of this year’s Oscars story is that you never know what will win and what will not. Or was that the moral of last year’s Oscars?

You will be turning heads as Mars turns direct which should add a bit of spice to the week – attention is coming your way. Perhaps in the past you have been attracted to what you can never really have for yourself, if this is the case, then through social or personal interactions and by keeping your attitude light, you could attract to you something more permanent. This is a good time to put plans in place and also be open to consider unexpected events. What is apparent now is what is missing in your life and what is not working to allow you access to the one thing you really need. Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
This is a lovely tasty supper dish. Serve it with crusty bread or with rice to make it into a more substantial lunch or dinner dish. This recipe can be used right through the year so come (more) rain or shine - it always goes down a treat - and it’s healthy too!
Mussels with bacon
(Serves 4)
Ingredients: ● 150ml dry cider ● 2kg fresh or frozen mussels, cleaned and beards removed (they're the hairy bits poking out of the shell – just pull them off) ● 6 slices back bacon or 8 slices streaky bacon, cut into strips ● ½ finely diced onion ● 6 sage (salvia) leaves, finely chopped or 1 teaspoon dried sage ● 1 red apple, cored and diced
Method ● In a very large saucepan, bring the cider to a fast boil, add the mussels and cover with a lid. Cook for between 3 and 5 minutes until all the mussel shells are open – throw away any that don't open. You can remove about half the mussels from the shells if you want to make the dish easier to eat.
● In a frying pan, cook the bacon, onion and sage until the onion is soft and the bacon just crispy. Add the apple and cook for 1 to 3 more minutes. Season to taste.
● Strain the cooking liquid to get any bits of shell etc out and put back on the heat. Add the mussels back into the liquid and cook very gently.
● Serve with rice or crusty bread and butter.
● Divide the mussels into four bowls, pour over the cooking liquid then sprinkle the bacon, onion and sage over the top.

To be or not to be. A self proclaimed avid reader of this column (do such things exist?!) has asked me to write about the way the Spanish use two verbs for the English to be. There are whole books written about the different uses of these but let’s take a look at the more everyday uses. First, here are the two verbs:Ser Soy Eres Es Somos Son
to be I am You are He/she is We are They are
Estar Estoy Estás Está Estamos Están
Generally speaking Use ser for permanent things -
Soy Irlandesa - I’m Irish. Eres de Inglaterra - You’re from England. for time and date Son las tres de la tarde - It’s three in the afternoon. La fiesta es el lunes - The party is on Monday. for personal characteristics Juan es alto - Juan is tall. Maria es rubia - Maria is blond. Use estar for the location of things - Estoy en Coin - I’m in Coin. Maribel está en Madrid - Maribel is in Madrid. Los niños están en el jardín - The children are in the garden. for things which are temporary Está enfermo - He’s ill. Estoy cansado(a) - I’m tired. Los niños están sucios - The children are dirty. Well, there you have some simple guidelines and in two weeks time we’ll look at some of the reasons why it’s important to get it right. ¡Ya está! - That’s it! A bad spring for hay fever sufferers A spokesman for Spanish Allergy and Immunology Society (SEAIC) has warned that because of the heavy rains of the past three months the pollen count this Spring will be almost double that of last year – 5,100 grass pollen grams per cubic metre of air as opposed to 2,800. He said this year would be among the worst for pollen for the past 30 years, but added that any “atypical” heat wave or rainfall from March to June could change the prediction. He
said the worst affected areas would be the Madrid Community, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and the central part of Andalucía, which includes Malaga province. He
advised hay fever sufferers who stopped taking their medication last year because they had no symptoms to see an allergy specialist before the period of pollination
starts, and said people suffering from rhinoconjunctivitis or bronchial asthma should start taking the necessary medication before the end of March.

Recession causes wrinkles
Device could relieve migraine
There was a 15% drop in cosmetic surgery last year, according to the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME). A spokeswoman said the recession had not driven away clients, whose numbers had remained stable, but had forced them to reduce the number of visits for retouching or to opt for cheaper treatments. For example, she said for facial rejuvenation many people settled for a
vitamin-based treatment which costs between €250 and €300 rather than a laser treatment which can cost anything up to €3,000. She advised people to consult their usual cosmetic surgeons to work out treatment compatible with their reduced budgets in order not to lose the effects of previous surgery or treatment.
The trial of a new handheld device that delivers a magnetic pulse to the back of the head found that 40% of the 200 migraine sufferers who participated were pain free two hours after using it. Corrie cobbles take to the stage
The dramas, the tears and the laughter that have unfolded over 50 years of Britain´s longest running soap, Coronation Street, are to be condensed into a two hour stage production. Scriptwriter Jonathan Harvey has written Coronation Street Abridged Live!, and the show will cover over 7,000 episodes, more than 2,000 storylines, 115 deaths, 37 births and 86 marriages. Iconic soap
favourites Ena
Sharples, Hilda Ogden and Bet Lynch, and villains like Alan Bradley and Richard Hillman, will all feature but it will not star actors past and present from the show itself. The production is marking the runup to the golden anniversary of Coronation Street, and it will
open at the Lowry Theatre in Salford, in August, before touring the country. But before then there will be a poignant opportunity to pay tribute to actress Maggie Jones who played Blanche Hunt. Maggie died last October and
her character was written out. Blanche has been away from Weatherfield on holiday in Portugal and daughter Deirdre will receive the shocking news in May that her mother has died.
Whitfield (pictured above) will appear in two commemorative episodes as Blanche´s friend May, who arrives in Weatherfield to attend the funeral. Roy Hudd will reprise his role as undertaker Archie Shuttleworth.

Potter magic Just like Granny made it... If you have a recipe for Yorkshire pudding passed down through the family then don´t will live on worry - eurocrats won´t be marching into your kitchen anytime soon. Organisers of World Book Day have asked what books from the noughties would people like to see passed on to the next generation to read.
But commercial producers may find themselves in difficulty as three Yorkshire pudding manufacturers seek special protection for the name from the European Union.
And it s not good news for the likes of Katie Price aka Jordan. She turns out a memoir roughly once every 18 months so her fans can keep up with her dizzying lifestyle, but neither she nor any of the other celebs who have shared their lives with us at a hardback cost of £18.99 a throw, have made it into the top 10. So keep an eye on the remainder bin.
Vinci Code and Stephanie Meyers' Twilight was 5th. Mind you, the top 10 includes some curious titles which could cause the next generation a bit of confusion. Gillian McKeith s You Are What You Eat at number 9 edges Barack Obama s Dreams from My Father into the last slot.
The Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber said it wanted to stop rivals from outside the county cashing in on the famous name - three manufacturers, including Aunt Bessie, are in talks over special status which means that Yorkshire
Three quarters of people surveyed said they had given a book as a gift last year. And the publishers of Tony Blair s memoirs, The Journey, which is released in September, will be hoping to see big sales to compensate for the big advance for former Prime Minister received - political memoirs have taken a battering in recent years leaving publishing houses counting the cost.
Bullock hits razzie heights
Movies have had a big influence on the popularity of books and, almost inevitably, the juggernaut that has been Harry Potter has taken the No 1 slot. Those surveyed picked J K Rowling s tales of magicians and muggles as definite classics to pass on. The books have been enormously popular, and their position has been reinforced by the popularity of the films. Young audiences despaired as the series came to an end last year with the Deathly Hallows. Second on the list is Dan Brown s blockbuster The Da

puddings must be made within the county if they are to carry the name. Yorkshire puddings were first named in an 18th century recipe by food writer Hannah Glasse and securing special protection could lead to grants from Europe to promote regional food and legal support to protect the name against imitators. In Europe items like Parma ham and Champagne have
protection and the British list so far includes Cornish clotted cream, Whitstable oysters and Stilton cheese. If the manufacturers are successful anyone commercially producing
the dish outside the county would have to rename it. But cooks in kitchens up and down the land could carry on making Yorkshire puds to accompany the Sunday lunch.
It was a record setting Oscar night. Not only did a woman win best director for the first time ever, Sandra Bullock will now have to find two spots on the mantlepiece. The 45-year-old actress managed to pull off something no-one has ever done before - over the same weekend she picked up statues for the best and the WORST performance by an actress. On Sunday millions watched worldwide as she won her first Oscar for best actress for her role as a housewife who mentors a homeless black teenager in The Blind Side.
She was the front runner after picking up a raft of awards in ceremonies leading up to the glittering Oscar presentation. She received her awards looking glamorous, and paid tribute to the other women in her category. Mind you, she had had practise at making an acceptance speech. She was nominated for, and received, the Golden Raspberry, commonly
known as the Razzie, for her flop All About Steve, in which she basically played a deranged stalker - except it was supposed to be funny and romantic! Oh well, you have to pay the rent somehow. Like a trouper, she went to the Razzie awards and proudly picked up her trophy and later said:”I will keep them right next to each other. It’s all about balance.”

Almost four in five people around the world believe that access to the internet is a fundamental right, a poll for the BBC World Service suggests. The survey - of more than 27,000 adults across 26 countries - found strong support for net access on both sides of the digital divide. Countries such as Finland and Estonia have already ruled that access is a human right for their citizens. International bodies such as the UN are also pushing for universal net access.

The danger of potholes Crumbling roads after severe weather have led to a spate of accidents and near-misses. Drivers do not see the danger until the last minute and then swerve to avoid the hole, which often results in a crash or damage.
Shakira takes a SEAT Mazda 6 release date She took to the SEAT stand alongside the newly unveiled IBE brought forward electric concept car and the production Ibiza estate, the ST. Available in two different body styles, hatchback or estate, it's easy to see how What Car? awarded the Mazda6 both the 'Family Car' and 'Estate Car of the Year 2010'
International pop star Shakira was the surprise star of SEAT's show stand. The maker will produce special editions of the Leon and Ibiza hatchbacks to celebrate its sponsorship of the Columbian singer's European tour. Only the Ibiza will be distributed to the UK, however. Called 'Good Stuff, the newcomer will be a limited edition and hits showrooms in May. Available only in threedoor SC form, the car will be based on Sport specification and power will come from a 1.4-litre petrol engine. Unique options will distinguish it from standard versions.
Shakira performed on the SEAT stand at Geneva
Mazda has brought forward the UK release date of the upgraded Mazda6 range, citing unprecedented demand from buyers and fleet customers.
The name 'Good Stuff' is taken from a track on her latest album, though the song Shakira performed at Geneva was another, called Gypsy. She took to the SEAT stand alongside the newly unveiled IBE electric concept car and the production Ibiza estate, the ST. SEAT will also support the charity Shakira founded, the Barefoot Foundation, which the singer spent some time promoting from the stand. The charity provides funding for education for vulnerable children in Columbia. Seat has unveiled the IBE concept car at the Geneva Show, an all-

electric sports coupe roughly based on the Ibiza SC supermini. Designed for use in the city, the IBE does not compromise on styling, which looks rather futuristic in a rather 80s sense. Which is not to say it doesn't look sharp; the IBE conveys a kind of retro futurism in its squat
stance, large alloy wheels, solid grey bodywork and neon-like flashes from LED headlights in the arrow formation. It probably won’t make production but you can bet that it may give a clue as to the direction in which Seat design is heading over the coming years.
Stirling Moss falls down lift shaft Sir Stirling Moss is recovering in hospital after falling down a lift shaft at home and breaking both his ankles. Moss, who turned 80 last September, opened the lift door on the third floor of his house in central London and stepped forwards but due to a malfunction the lift had stopped on the floor above. According to the statement, the accident occurred "when the door to the lift, that should have remained locked if the lift was not on the floor that it

was called from, opened in error. He stepped into the narrow open shaft in the expectation that the lift would be present for him to walk into, as it should have been." The friend said Moss spent the weekend in intensive care but, despite suffering damage to some
Moss is widely regarded as the greatest driver never to have won the Formula One championship - he won 16 Formula One Grand Prix, racing in the same era as possibly the greatest driver of all time, Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio. He retired aged just 32 after a horrific car crash in his famous blue Lotus which left him in a coma for 38 days and paralysed for six months.
However, the new Mazda6 range will now feature only the hatchback and estate body styles after the manufacturer’s ‘range rationalisation’ removed the saloon body style from the UK line-up. Customers can now get their hands on the new Mazda6 petrol versions in March, with diesel models following in May 2010. Despite the more limited range, the Mazda6 is available in 19 derivatives, including four trim levels (S, TS, TS2 and Sport) and six engines. Mazda claims
the new engines will deliver reduced CO2 emissions and better fuel efficiency than the outgoing model. The cleanest of the three diesel engines - the 2.2-litre diesel hatchback model – boasts emissions of 138g/km. Across the range, fuel economy has improved between 3.2 and 4.1 per cent despite the addition of a range-topping 2.0litre model in Sport specification being produced for the first time. New equipment included with higher specification models in the new Mazda6 range includes smart turn indicators, Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), rear spoiler, front and rear parking sensors, Hill Hold

The Costa Del Sol Rugby Club Superbowl Club singles championships show their gratitude
Report & Photo by Murray Johns
Very recently Antonio D. Soler, VP of the Costa del Sol Rugby Club (CSRC) kindly delivered 24 complete soccer kits for players of the Club Deportivo Mijas. Both the president and secretary of the Club Deportivo Mijas, Mr. Colin Wilson and D. Antonio Marquez happily received these kits as a token of the rugby club's gratitude. Mr Colin Wilson & D. Antonio Marquez receive the kits from Antonio D. Soler
This act of pure sportsmanship responds to the support that the Costa del Sol Rugby Club has always received from Club Deportivo Mijas, a long established club, with more than 70 years on the coast and countless trophies. In these tough times, the openmindedness and the willingness to collaborate on behalf of both clubs is one to look up to. To live together and to share one’s
belongings is always difficult, but the main goal is to help all players from both clubs maintain their hopes and dreams and to also offer more sporting opportunities to all of Mijas young residents and its surrounding areas. The Costa del Sol Rugby Club is a young club founded in June 2009 and is equipped with a highly experienced technical,
sales and administrative team. In its conception they counted on several players from the Andalucian and Spanish national rugby teams and recently, the Senior rugby team, after endless victories, has been promoted to compete for a place in the 1st regional league. So far they are proving themselves unbeatable and have a promising future ahead.
The Club Singles Competition, to identify the lady and gent to represent the Club in this year’s Champion of Champions Tournament, produced some excellent winners who had to work extremely hard to achieve this honour. It was good to see some of the less experienced bowlers performing well and, in the case of Irene Bhreatnach and John Morgan, reaching the semi-finals. In the ladies section Pat Fisher held off Shirley Owen, then had the daunting task of facing Mary Detheridge in the semi final. Pat emerged as the winner but the 21-15 scoreline hardly does justice to Mary who held counts on many ends only for her opponent to steal the shot with her last bowl. Angie Knight, emerged a comfortable winner in the
Pat Fisher & Andy Salmon, the victors
other semi against Irene Bhreatnach. She established an early lead which she never lost winning by 21-10. The final was something of an anticlimax with Pat destroying her opponent to win 21-3 in only 12 ends. It was a controlled display of draw bowling proving once again, that Pat Fisher is still a match for any lady bowler in Spain. In the men’s section Andy Salmon, having already beaten Terry Barrett and Craig Lewis in
close fought games, had a fairly straightforward victory over John Morgan to set up a “mouthwatering” final with either Michael Detheridge or Mike Glithero.Their semifinal was a three hour marathon. Ultimately, on the 24th end with Mike Glithero leading 18-17, he picked up the 3 shots needed to set up an equally exciting final encounter. In the final it was Andy who gained the early initiative, establishing a 10-5 lead only for Mike to square the game 15-15 on the 14th end. Andy picked up the two he needed, on the 20th end to win 21-17. The club is extremely proud of its club champions and wishes them every success in the finals which take place at Miraflores from March 19th - 23rd.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The European Tour had a week off last week. However this week normal service was resumed, with the Malaysian Open being staged in Kuala Lumpur in really hot and humid conditions. This was again a co-sponsored event between the European Tour and the Asian Tour and unsurprisingly, given the conditions, the local players made a good showing. The Thailand ace Thongchai Jaidee was once again to the fore with some fine ball striking, along with promising young Welshman Rhys Davies and veteran South Korean K J Choi. The Korean’s 18 year old compatriot Noh Seung-yul was also in the frame after three fine rounds and after a tense final day’s golf the teenager held sway with a terrific chip and a four foot birdie putt on the last to clinch the title by two shots after a four-under par 68. After the rain-delayed outing for the C O G S at Alhaurin Golf Club last month there seems to have been a really short break before we are ready to go again and this Saturday we are due at the spectacular Los Arqueros Golf Club situated just to the north of San Pedro. Like Alhaurin this course was designed by the legendary Seve Ballesteros and is , I think , at least as difficult although at least you can see your ball disappearing into the undergrowth! I am really pleased to report that Seve is possibly going to play in the former champions 4 hole event at this year’s Open at St.Andrews and I am sure all golf lovers will be pleased to see him do that. Till the next time keep your head down. Dave
RACING CALENDAR 2010 The dates have been set for the Morphological Competition of Thoroughbred Horses. EQUI-MIJAS 2010, will be held on March 26th,27th and 28th. BOXING
Hatton U-turn, he won’t box again
The Liverpool skipper was booked for a scything challenge in the 82nd minute and seemed to give Marriner a V-sign and mouth an obscenity as his mounting frustration at a listless performance boiled over. While it appeared to escape Marriner's attention, Gerrard could be in trouble if the FA look into it and decide it warrants disciplinary action. It was yet another brush with authority for an England captain. Gerrard took the armband against Egypt last week in the wake of the scandal that cost John Terry the job of national skipper.
Ricky Hatton has done a dramatic U-turn and told friends he will not box again. He dropped the bombshell on a stag trip to Tenerife this weekend telling them he no longer had the motivation to fight and was hanging up his gloves.'The Hitman' had been due to fight again in June but is tipped to make an official announcement soon.

Xerez went ahead in the 2nd minute from a disputed handball penalty. However Malaga pulled themselves back into it with a goal from Duda on 40 mins and then went ahead when Valdo headed home at the far post after 55 minutes. Everything looked good for Malaga,
especially after the 58th minute when Xerez player Armenteros was sent off a minute after coming on as a sub. Remarkably Xerez came back when Duda was sent off for handball and Momo scored his second on the rebound from the resulting penalty. Gioda scored in the 74th minute for Xerez after a corner and then deep into stopppage time Orellana sealed a great and surprising win for Xerez. Disappointing! Hoping for better at Almeria next week.
