Ships head to Spain in rescue mission A massive rescue operation was under way this week to bring back holidaymakers stranded in Spain as the volcanic ash cloud continued to cause air flight chaos. Nearly 300 were on their way home yesterday (Tuesday) aboard a royal navy warship. They boarded HMS Albion in Santander and the ship set sail at 1.20pm for Portsmouth. On board

were 500 military personnel returning home from a tour of duty in Afghanistan the holidaymakers were allowed to board by the Captain, who promised to leave no-one behind. The

returning Brits included a girl guide troop, a school football team, and the parents of London Mayor Boris Johnson. The new luxury cruise liner Celebrity Eclipse has cancelled launch

celebrations. She is on her way to Bilbao on behalf of tour operators and will arrive early tomorrow (Thursday) morning. [...] Continued on Page 2

WORLD Weather to walk or not....

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

No, I haven’t spelt the word wrong. I was referring to the appalling weather we had last Thursday up here in Coin. Those of you who habitually read my column will know that I have three big dogs and after the monsoon-like rain it was a question of whether it was safe or not to walk anywhere in the Campo at all. Our camino road had been washed away but luckily our neighbour, Alan Ellis, has a tractor and very kindly came and scraped the gravel that had been washed down the road - creating a two foot deep ravine - back into the hole. Again retaining banks had been washed away and trees had their roots exposed. Anyway, it all turned out OK. Thanks to Alan I can get in and out to work and walk my dogs in safety. All we need now is a bit of sun! After my last week’s missive about Barclays Bank, we eventually got on a plane to the UK last weekend to sort everything out. The people in the branches are really helpful and all our business was done in a matter of minutes. The International branch are another thing entirely and, while I understand all about the needs to curb money laundering, surely once you can prove where the money’s come from, you should be able to move it around the world as you please. After all, it is our money - not the bank’s or the government’s!

Ships head to Spain in rescue mission [...] Two thousand holidaymakers will board and the ship will set sail for Southampton tomorrow night. Thomson and First Choice are using a combination of coach, ferry and cruise ship to repatriate around 5,000 travellers stuck abroad. The Thomson ship Island Escape is to bring 300 holidaymakers home from Madeira. She will arrive in Falmouth, Cornwall, on Thursday. People will then be transferred by coach to their original departure points. Their clients on the Costa Blanca will be taken by coach to the French ferry ports. Their holidaymakers stranded in Malaga spent Monday night on the Costa Brava after a coach drive. They continued their journey by coach to northern France on

Tuesday where it was hoped they could board ferries headed for home today(Wednesday). An Aer Lingus pilot seized the chance to fly more than 200 passengers home when the ban flying into Irish airspace was temporarily lifted last Friday evening. By Tuesday afternoon thousands of holidaymakers from outside Spain headed to the country’s capital after Gordon Brown announced that Madrid could be used as a “hub” and that travellers could be taken back to the UK by 100 coaches laid on by the Government. But travellers said chaos was reigning, with no evidence of coaches. Foreign Office advice continued to be to head to ferry ports whenever possible and in

Couches get swamped by anxious holidaymakers.

Northern France ferry operators said they had plenty of room. As of last night there seemed to be some advance, with officials saying that the volcano was now spewing more lava than ash but stringent nofly restrictions were still in widespread operation.

Meanwhile, farmers in southern Iceland are racing to protect their animals from being poisoned by volcanic dust. The animals are at risk of fluoride poisoning if they inhale or ingest the ash, leading to internal bleeding, longterm bone damage and teeth loss. Sheep, cattle and horses were rushed to shelter after they got lost in a fog of ash in areas near the erupting volcano. They will be fed and watered indoors as long as the earth id contaminated, one farmer said. Teams from the country's civil defence department have been visiting the farmers to offer support and advice using specially modified vehicles and armoured personnel carriers.

But the cloud is not just affecting holidaymakers and businessmen in Europe. Its tentacles are reaching as far away as Zambia and Kenya, where the gourmet vegetable and cut-flower industries which export mainly to Europe face a bleak future. The Kenyan and Zambian horticulture industry, which as the top foreign exchange earner is a critical piece of the national economies, is losing millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs every day the crisis lasts.

Areas south of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano have been caked in a layer of grey ash some 10cm

thick. Ponds have turned into pools of cement-like mud and geese have had trouble flying because their wings are heavy with ash. Sveinn Steinarsson, of Iceland's Horse Breeding Association, warned that Iceland's famously resilient ponies would be in danger if the ash contamination continued. He told reporters: "They can't survive in this if it carries on too long.” The Eurocontrol air traffic agency said about half of flights over Europe were expected to go ahead yesterday. A limited number of flights took off in northern Europe and planes have been departing from Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt among others though many flights are still grounded. Most of UK airspace, including London, remained closed.

Partido Popular leader Mariano Rajoy and Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre kicked off in Madrid on Sunday their “civic rebellion” to convince the government not to raise the IVA tax by 2% as of July 1st. Sra Aguirre told a crowd of some 2,000 in the Egaleo Theatre that 400 information desks would be set up in the Madrid Community to distribute more than half a million

Nick Clegg is also worrying that his three young sons, after spending Easter with his wife's family in Spain, may not be able to get back by election time if planes are still grounded. As of May 1st, the Guardia Civil and the National Police will no longer withdraw vehicles that have not passed the required ITV examination from circulation. Owners of such vehicles will be given 10 days to take the test. If it has not been inspected by then, the vehicle will be impounded. Moslem girl goes back to school The 16-year-old Moslem schoolgirl who was asked to leave her school in Pozuelo de Alarcon for wearing a headscarf earlier last week was allowed to return on Friday. Najwa Malha's father told reporters that it was media pressure that forced the school's authorities to allow her back in the classroom, wearing her scarf. A spokesman for the Camilo José Cela Institute said she had been asked to withdraw because students were not allowed to wear caps or other head coverings in class, and that it had nothing to do with her religion.

National Statistics Institute figures show that divorces among people over 60 have doubled since the so-called quickie divorce came into effect in 2005, although – at 5,338 – they still account for only 4% of total divorces. A spokeswoman for the Miriam Suarez Family Support Centre in Madrid said that more women than men of that age initiated divorce

proceedings, even though they had been married in church at a time when divorce was prohibited by law and civil weddings were not recognised by the

Petty thieves to be jailed The government has reached an agreement with the Convergencia y Union (CiU) political party to reform the Penal Code so that petty thieves who steal less than €400 can be jailed. Under the current

law, they receive nothing but a fine, no matter how many times they appear in court, but a CiU spokesman said the sharp rise in this sort of crime warranted a tougher deterrent.

Manhole covers go round and round The Guardia Urbana in Tarragona have busted a gang that stole manhole covers to sell to illegal scrapyards. They were paid €100 per manhole cover which the scrapyards then

Catholic Church. She said older women were finally losing their fear of rebelling and were opting for a peaceful old age.

15 years since ETA attempt on Aznar

At 8.10 am on April 19th, 1995, a car bomb exploded as the vehicle carrying the then leader of the opposition, Jose Maria Aznar, to work passed by. Thanks to his armourplated car, he escaped with nothing more than a cut on the cheek. However, another 16 people were injured, and one of them died after spending three months in a coma.

ETA lawyers jailed Judge Fernando GrandeMarlask jailed lawyers Arantza Zulueta, Jon Enparantza and Iker Sarriegi, and former ETA member Naia Zuriarrain on Monday, on charges of having acted as go-betweens for the Basque terrorist group and their clients in jail. The five were arrested

during raids on homes in the Basque country last week. Meanwhile in Paris, a judge freed an alleged Eta leader, David Plá,who was arrested in northern France last Friday, “for lack of sufficient proof to sustain the charges against him.

According to the ABC newspaper, the Basque terrorist group wanted Aznar dead, knowing he would a lead a strong antiterrorist government, when what they wanted was a weak government in Madrid. He got out of his car and called his office to tell them to re-arrange his agenda, because “I am going to arrive a little bit late”.

Mario Sarsa, the Spanish doctor who had been kidnapped by rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was released on Wednesday, April 14th, totally unharmed. He had been sailing down the Congo river during a twomonth vacation in the Congo and Uganda when he was grabbed. He informed the Spanish embassy in Kinshasa that he intended to carry on with his travels and would arrive in the capital just before he was due to catch his return flight home on April 19th. At press time, there were no reports that he had arrived back in Spain.

Death by biting

MADRID. A Traffic Authority spokesman said on Monday that the number of drivers who have lost all 12 points doubled in the past year, to 78,975. Nearly 57,000 are in the process of recovering their licences. The rest will join them once the Traffic Authority completes the paperwork. More than 565,000 have lost six of the 12 points they started out with.

SANTANDER. Two men are on trial for having bitten each other repeatedly during a fight at a pub in the city in March last year. One of the men lost half an ear in the mêlée. The prosecutors are asking for prison sentences of up to three-and-a-half years and compensation of €7,600 for the man who lost part of his ear.

Anti-depressants Dangerous sales up profession MADRID. The sale of antidepressants has increased 10% over the past two years, according to figures issued by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer on Monday, coinciding with the economic crisis affecting the country. Psychiatrist José Carlos Fuentes said his consultations had increased by 25% during the same period and would continue to do so until the economy improved.

MADRID. Dozens of driving examiners gathered outside Traffic Authority headquarters last Friday to demand the same public authority status as policemen and firemen to guarantee their safety. World News UK water imports 'unsustainable'

DAVID’S

Forecasts suggest that when the world's population soars beyond 8bn in 20 years time, the global demand for food and energy will jump by 50%, with the need for fresh water rising by 30%. But developing countries are already using significant

proportions of their water to grow food and produce goods for consumption in the West, the report said. "Embedded water" - the water used to grow food and make things – is a key concept in the report. Embedded in a pint of beer, for example, is about 74 litres of water - the total amount needed to grow the ingredients and run all the processes that make the pint of beer. This rises to 15,000 litres for a kilogram of steak. The average UK consumer uses about 150 litres per day, but ten times as much is

embedded in the Britishmade goods bought by the average UK consumer. That represents only about onethird of the total water embedded in all the average consumer's food and goods, with the remainder coming from imports. The UK is not unique in this - the same pattern is seen in most developed countries. The report said this means nations such as the UK have a duty to help curb water use in the developing world, where about one billion people already do not

have sufficient access to clean drinking water. It said UK-funded aid projects should have water conservation as a central tenet, while companies should examine their supply chains and reduce the water used in them. This could lead to difficult questions being asked, such as whether it is right for the UK to import beans and flowers from water-stressed countries such as Kenya. Growing crops such as these uses water, but selling them brings foreign exchange into poor nations.

A report by the Engineering the Future alliance of professional engineering bodies has said that the amount of water used to produce food and goods imported to developed countries is worsening water shortages in the developing world. The report, focusing on the UK, said two-thirds of the water used to make UK imports is used outside its borders. It said this is unsustainable, given population growth and climate change.

Protesters could face live ammo A spokesman for the Thai army said on Tuesday that soldiers were ready to use live ammunition in their weapons against "red-shirt" anti-government protesters in certain circumstances. The red-shirts later called off plans to march on the city's Silom business district, saying they wanted to avoid confrontation with the army. Troops had moved into Silom on Monday, in an increasingly militarised standoff. The army believes that some more militant members of the protest movement were preparing weapons such as sharpened

bamboo sticks, acid and grenades. Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd told reporters: “We can no longer use the soft to hard steps. We have to keep a distance between troops and demonstrators. If they try to break the line, we will start using tear gas, and if they do break the line, we need to use weapons to deal with them decisively." The

military had earlier outlined seven steps to be taken by security forces before any shooting would take place. These included a show of force, the use of sound blasters and signal scramblers, followed by fire hoses and water cannon. They then allowed for a possible shield charge, and a baton charge preceding any

use of tear gas or pepper spray, culminating in the use of rubber bullets. Colonel Sansern's latest comments compressed this process down to four steps, ending not in rubber bullets, but live ammunition. The army plays a prominent role in Thai politics - former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted by the military in 2006.

China holds national day of mourning Flags will be flown at half mast across China today ( Wednesday) as a mark of respect for the victims of the powerful earthquake in Qinghai province last week. The day of mourning came as the number of people known to have been killed in the quake reached 2,039. Another 195 people are still missing after the 6.9magnitude quake and 12,135 have been injured. Officials said weather conditions are expected to deteriorate in the next few days, further hampering rescue and relief efforts in the remote region. Rescue workers are continuing to dig through the rubble in and around the worst-hit town of Jiegu in Yushu County. Hopes were raised by the rescue of three people on Monday who had survived nearly a week under the ruins of buildings. A four-year-old girl and an elderly woman were rescued from a house near Jiegu and later in the

day, a woman in her 30s was pulled alive from her home. Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless by the quake and are living in temporary shelters or tents in freezing overnight temperatures. Officials have warned that temperatures in the Himalayan plateau region are expected to fall further. They warned that those working in transport, medicine and health should "strengthen their guard". Tibetan Buddhist monks have been heavily involved in the emergency operation, digging through the rubble for survivors and distributing aid. They have also been collecting bodies and holding funerals. The Dalai Lama has appealed to the Chinese

GrEAT BArriEr rEEf. Australia is planning to subject commercial ships passing through all parts of the Great Barrier Reef to greater surveillance to protect the region from pollution. nEW YorK. George Washington borrowed two books from the New York Society Library in 1789 but failed to return them. Adjusted for inflation, he has since racked up $300,000 in fines for being some 220 years late. The New York Society Library says it will not pursue the fine. It would simply like the books back, but they appear to have vanished.

Pasta book pulped First mephedrone over misprint arrests made AusTrAliA. Penguin Group Australia has had to pulp and reprint a cookbook after one recipe listed "salt and freshly ground black people" instead of black pepper. It had to reprint 7,000 copies of Pasta Bible last week, at a cost of A$20,000 (£12,000). Stock in bookshops will not be recalled as it would be "extremely hard" to do so, Penguin said.

scoTlAnd. Two men aged 23 and 25 were the first people in the country to be arrested in connection with the newlybanned drug mephedrone. They were arrested in Aberdeen just hours after the drug was reclassified as a Class B substance last Friday. Shortly afterwards, police in Edinburgh also arrested a man for possessing mephedrone, found during a house search.

Exam change for stuck pupils The Joint Council for Qualifications Exam has said timetables could be readjusted to help pupils stranded overseas as a result of flight cancellations caused by the volcanic ash cloud. The body said some practical parts of art exams and oral tests for language subjects which are set to begin with could be rearranged. However no written GCSE or A-level papers will be rescheduled. A statement from the Joint Council for

Qualifications offered reassurance to pupils worried about missing their exams. The problems with travel have caused problems for schools where staff have been unable to get back from overseas holidays. The Department for Children, Schools and Families said heads had contingency plans to deal with such issues, but teacher supply agencies say they are under intense pressure to make more temporary staff available.

Change on agenda Tens of thousands of troops are involved in the relief effort.

authorities to allow him to visit the quake zone. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was born in Qinghai province but has not set foot in China since a failed Tibetan uprising more than 50 years ago. However, it is highly unlikely that the Chinese government will agree to his request. At a government

meeting on Monday, China's top parliamentary advisor, Jia Qinglin, warned of "hostile forces from abroad working to cause disruptions and sabotage" in the quake's aftermath. He did not specifically mention the Dalai Lama but he and his supporters are often referred to as "hostile forces" by the Communist government.

The Lib Dems' surge after the first televised debate has led to the three biggest parties putting “change” high up the political agenda. The Tories say they can "guarantee change". Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has said only his party "stands up for real change in the old economic and political order", while Lord Mandelson has said

Labour had learned lessons from its time in power to offer "real change" in key areas. Opinion polls published in two of Tuesday's newspapers suggest the Liberal Democrats continue to enjoy more support than Labour, but less than the Conservatives. The leaders will face each other in two more televised debates.

give Big Burro a permanent home and the sculptor finally chose El Carpio, which is surrounded by olive groves where olive growers and their donkeys were an integral part of the landscape.

The lighting marked the official opening of one of the country's most famous ferias, the week-long Feria de Abril in Sevilla. Fears that rain would mar the opening proved unfounded. The 15-street Real fairground houses the 1,047 casetas (booths) where people can dance

and drink the nights away. The casetas used to belong to the local rich families and were closed to the hoi polloi who thronged around, watching how the other richer half lived but the feria has become increasingly democratised since the end of the Franco dictatorship. This year's is the 163rd one to be held since Isabel II decreed on

March 5th 1847 that a three-day livestock fair could be held in Seville. Now the only livestock are the bulls that die in the bullring and the pure bred horses mounted by soberly-dressed men and their colourfully-dressed lady friends which are one of the fair's must-see spectacles.

Navy helicopter victims buried with honours King Juan Carlos awarded the Cross for Naval Merit to the four crew members of a Navy helicopter which crashed on a mountainside in Haiti last Friday. The helicopter was part of an independent Spanish detachment deployed in the country and was one of four based on the Spanish navy amphibious ship, the Castilla. The bodies of the four men – Quartermaster Major Luis Fernando Torija, 44, Marine Infantary Lt Francisco Forne, 37, Ensign Manuel Dormido, 35, and Marine Cpl Eusebio Villatoro, 35, – were recovered by Chilean and US helicopter crews on Saturday and Defence

Minister Carme Chacon flew to Haiti on Sunday to escort them back to Spain. The funeral was to have taken place at Rota naval base on Monday but was delayed until Tuesday to make sure the bodies had been correctly identified. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arrived at the base before the funeral to offer their condolences to the men's families, and the funeral mass was led by Archbishop Juan del Río Martín.

Air force plane 'attacks' boat

Unsolved murder confession

HUELVA. The Air Force has opened an investigation into an incident last week, when one of its planes fired a blank projectile at a small Spanish fishing boat during exercises off the coast of Huelva. A spokesman said the boat was in an area clearly marked on all marine maps as being dangerous because of the military exercises carried out there.

MARBELLA. A Peruvian man accused of strangling his partner in a hostel in the town on Good Friday cleared up another murder when he appeared in court last week. He told the judge he had also strangled an Italian woman who was declared missing in 2006. He said he buried the body in a field outside the city before catching a train for Barcelona.

ANDALUCIA. The Junta de Andalucia's Health Department will grant licences for another 312 pharmacies around the region. They will be distributed in areas of growth in big cities, areas on the coast that attract tourism or to meet the needs of small towns. Applications for the licences will start after the decree has been published in Andalucia's Official Gazette.

MALAGA. Housing Ministry figures show that the prices of houses and apartments in the province have dropped to €1,985 per square metre - the lowest since 2005 when a square metre cost €1,909. Property older than two years is still expensive in the province, however, selling for €1,855 m2, above the average for the region which is €1,529.

Tit for tat

C

rusading Judge Baltasar Garzon is currently being sued by three extreme right-wing organisations for having tried to put the Franco dictatorship in the dock, even though the 1977 Amnesty Law decided not to prosecute crimes committed by both sides in the Civil War. The Falange – the fascist organization founded in 1933 – accuses him of using his position as a National Court judge to pervert the course of justice and wants him to be suspended professionally for 20 years. The judge hearing that case has still to rule on it. It’s highly unlikely that he will decide to suspend Garzon but most legal experts predict he will be told in no uncertain terms to stop trying the Franco regime for crimes against humanity.

H

owever, his supporters are determined to go ahead come hell or high water and have taken the case to a court in Argentina, where there are still a handful of Spanish Republican exiles willing to testify against the few surviving members of the regime. In fact, only one of Franco’s former ministers is still around – Manuel Fraga, 87, one of the founders of the Partido Popular who was premier of the Galician regional government for many years. And there are probably a few dozen lesser Franco officials out there still, all of them more or less the same age as Fraga, who was only 14 when the war broke out.

T

he problem here is that sooner or later, some bright spark on the Right is going to try to bring a similar case against the very few surviving Republicans who held any power during that tragic time. Only one person springs to mind, Santiago Carrillo, the former Communist Party leader who was 21 when the war started. Despite his youth, the party made him Public Order commissar in Madrid, after the Republican government moved to Valencia on November 7th, claiming it could not function properly in a war zone.

O

ne of the worst Republican atrocities began just then. At the time, there were an estimated 8,000 political (pro-Franco) prisoners in Madrid’s main jail (Hugh Thomas, The Spanish Civil War). The Defence Junta that took over from the departing government decided to move them to jails outside the capital. What actually happened was that many were slaughtered by the guards at the jail and the rest were taken to Paracuellos de Jarama and executed there over a period of about five weeks. The number of deaths has been put variously as “only” 1,000 or as many as 5,000. Most impartial historians and researchers put the number at between 4,000 and 5,000.

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of El Pais

Stepping down claims he wasn’t in Madrid during those weeks and was not informed about it.

N

owadays, a lot of people think that one side was as bad as the other, although it’s not the fashionable or politically correct thing to say. In his book “Blood of Spain”, one of the Republican survivors interviewed by Ronald Fraser in the early 1970s said that “the winner always kills the most people”. Hugh Thomas reckons that Franco killed almost as many “enemies” (300,000) after the war as those who died during it, some 400,000. He also estimates that between 80,000 and 100,000 non-combatants were killed by Franco’s side during the war, and that the Republicans were responsible for the deaths of another 70,000 or 80,000 non-combatants.

B

oth sides did their best to eliminate those they perceived as their political enemies. I use the word “perceived” because their executioners in many cases simply assumed they supported the other side. Priests and nuns, for example, were automatically classified as franquistas, as were members of the middle class in the small towns, especially in Andalucia, where class hatred ran very deep. The tragedy here is that most of the really rich and the big landowners had already left the country or managed to get to “safe” zones. As a result, they survived to return to their privileged way of life under Franco. As the dead can’t speak we’ll never know how many middle-class supporters of the Republic went to the wall. According to the relatives of 14 men in the same family who were killed by the “red hordes” (Republicans) at the beginning of the war “you could get killed just for reading the ABC (a monarchist newspaper)”. And during the war nobody in the Republican zone wore ties, jackets or hats because they marked you as a franquista. Similarly, many of the Republicans interviewed by Fraser were amazed at the number of blue shirts (the Falange’s uniform) that appeared on the streets of towns and cities after they fell to Franco’s troops. Where on earth were all those Franco supporters hiding during the war, they asked.

M

any are asking today: "Why is this war still being fought."

I

ronically, the main reason why the extreme right wing organizations decided to sue Garzon is that he refused to include the massacre in his investigation of Civil War crimes. Carrillo

Memo from Madrid

Baltasar Garzon.

F

inally, we’re getting some good sense coming out of the Partido Popular and none of it coming from its leader Mariano Rajoy. After months of accusations and debate, two of its elected officials who are targets in the massive Gürtel corruption investigation decided on Monday to give up their parliamentary seats. Luis Bárcenas and Jesús Merino stepped down from their respective Senate and Chamber of Deputies positions and it couldn’t come at a better time.

hints through third parties, suggesting that the two should leave, but he never made a concrete effort to remove the blemishes from the PP landscape. Rajoy may be breathing a lot easier now that Bárcenas and Merino have made their decisions, but his lame handling of this entire affair has weakened him even further. A true leader demands, pressures, and insists, but Rajoy floundered and fretted hoping his insubordinate soldiers would just be killed off in battle.

B

Madrid’s bad English

árcenas had been the opposition’s powerful money man for the last two decades, beginning first as the number two official in charge of party finances and moving up to treasurer in 2008 at the behest of Sr Rajoy. The 53year-old Huelva native has seen his personal wealth more than quadrupled since he was first elected in 2004. Authorities say he and his wife, who is also under investigation, received some €1.3 million from the Gürtel corrupt business network whose ringleader Francisco Correa sits in jail awaiting trial. Bárcenas’ initials and other references to his name appear on accounting sheets used to keep track of money paid out to politicians from a secret slush fund. Correa and his indicted co-conspirators are said to have funnelled some €24 million they made from their backhanders-for-tenders schemes with PP officials to offshore bank accounts in Switzerland and other tax-free paradises.

B

árcenas had enjoyed Rajoy’s protection and trust for many years. When his name first surfaced in the scandal last year, there were many voices inside the PP, including that of party secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal, yelling for his head. But Rajoy refused to budge. Even when Bárcenas stepped aside from his treasurer’s position in January and announced early this month he was separating himself from the party until he could clear his name, Rajoy didn’t demand that he give up his Senate seat. He was an untouchable, and many in the PP privately expressed their outrage over this.

T

hings weren’t set into motion until Jesús Merino, plagued by family issues as well as ballooning legal problems, decided the heat in the kitchen was too much for him. A 56-yearold lawyer from Segovia, Merino is accused of getting some €50,000 from the Gürtel graft ring. Early on, he wanted to resign his seat in the Chamber of Deputies but didn’t want to make it look bad for Bárcenas who insisted on remaining. But enough was enough. Following a meeting last week with Rajoy, Merino made his decision. Bárcenas took note, and also decided to bow out with him while he still had some dignity left.

T

he one tarnished by all this has indeed been Rajoy. He sent all types of subliminal messages, including

ould you attend a language school that uses poor grammar to advertise itself? English experts say they are appalled over a new ad campaign launched on April 12th pushing the Madrid regional government’s new bilingual schools. Called “Yes, we want,” the publicity drive appears to draw from US President Barack Obama’s highly successful “Yes we can” campaign slogan – except the Madrid government’s version is grammatically incorrect.

T

he ad is repeated on radio, and written on buses and billboards.

I was shocked when I saw the ad on the bus. I thought: ‘Something is missing here,’” Mariann Larsen Pehrzon, assistant dean at the School of Philology at Madrid’s Complutense University told El País. She says that the phrase is grammatically incorrect because “it has to have a direct object, something to follow the verb.” Despite the bad use of language, the ad campaign has cost the regional government some €2 million. In all, Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre of the Partido Popular has set aside €10.1 million this year to go to 242 bilingual public schools.

Annabel Milnes- Smith Mijas Beware the elements! In light of the recent volcanic eruptions which have effectively disabled flights throughout Europe; you may be forgiven for ignoring certain ‘rules of thumb’ in your own home town, especially within the San Pedro/Cortijo Blanco area of Marbella. The River Guadaiza, situated between Puerto Banus and San Pedro beach has always been rather challenging. Here are the do’s and don’ts of crossing the river or not, to you favourite watering hole; – one of which, for many a thirsty customer, is Italian Restaurant Bel Mare. 1. If the infamous white stone on the riverbed is not visible – do not attempt to cross. 2. If you have gleaned information that the sluce gates have recently been opened – do not even attempt it. 3. If there has been any form of rain (which as we know is somewhat constant at this time) turn around and head back onto the N340.

4. If the river bed is dry, attempt it, if you car is road worthy. 5. If in doubt, don’t. If you ignore the above, as you will see from the photograph depicting public relations business partners Julia Mulgrew (allegedly driving and Annabel Milnes-Smith her co-pilot) you will find yourself, literally in ‘deep’ trouble. Prior to this photograph being taken, even the local authorities found themselves swimming with their four x four, in need of a grua. Also to add insult to injury we were captured on film by local snapper Simon Bayne (this added to the cost of replacing seriously expensive brown leather boots from El Cortes Ingles which yours truly had to replace) A rather expensive lesson to be learnt).

Malaga I have an objection to the use of the word ex-pats in newspapers and on the radio and its inference. I know that the word by its definition in the dictionary means “a person who lives outside their native country”, but it has come to my attention that most people think that it means ex-patriotic.

We are British citizens living in a foreign country. That doesn’t mean we are no longer patriotic. In fact, most of us are very patriotic to our mother country and object to the way our homeland has been run for decades which is why a lot of us have moved out!

Coin “You’re aIl a load of a***holes!” That’s what shocked the members of the Royal British Legion in Coin last week when 2 members of the Coin Foreigners department stormed out of the monthly meeting at the El Palomar Hotel. The couple became irate when it emerged that only a handful of the members present had, or were bothered about, registering to vote in the Spanish local and national elections. The outburst did not allow for at least one members opinion that the running of Spain is best left to the Spanish. Terry Cleer from the Foreigners department says: The problem arose because two of the members verbally attacked us as soon as we arrived. Apologies have been sent by us and have been accepted by members that have seen the apology since the incident.

Coin I thought the rain had ended but, this morning - Thursday - it hit like a monsoon again. I live in the campo outside Coin in the La Carreta area where you go in off the road next to the Agro Azahar garden centre. What I cannot understand is how the people who have built the La Trocha Commercial Centre have been allowed to get away with running all their waste water straight across our road out. Whenever it rains, the run-off from La Trocha comes across the road like a river into the field beyond. Why were they not forced to put a drainage tunnel under the road when works were being carried out? It makes it dangerous for people living in the area - especially if they are on motorbikes or scooters - and car brakes could fail.

Messier and the Beehive

In 1781, a French astronomer called Charles Messier was interested in hunting for comets. The trouble was there are lots of objects in deep space that look like comets. Nebulas, Galaxies, Star clusters can all be mistaken for a comet in its early stages. So Mr. Messier set about cataloguing as many objects as possible to exclude them from his comet hunting periods. This catalogue was so detailed and accurate that it is still in use today. Obviously with advances in telescope ability and especially the Hubble Space Telescope many more objects have been found, but Messier’s list of 110 objects is still very useful to amateur astronomers. The objects all start with the letter M, so M1 is the Crab nebular, M31 is the Andromeda Galaxy, M42 is the Orion Nebular and M45 is the Pleiades star cluster. Almost all of the objects are too faint to see with the naked eye so unless you know exactly where to look with your telescope or binoculars then they are quite difficult to find. This coming week, there will be a beautiful conjunction between Mars

and one of Messier’s objects M44 the Beehive cluster. This is an open cluster of thousands of stars all grouped together that literally does look like a swarm of bees around a hive. Now usually I tell you about things that you can see with the naked eye but this time you will need a pair of binoculars to see it. Look almost directly overhead and find Mars. Tonight, Wednesday 21st the Moon will be very close to Mars so it should be easier to find, Mars is the brightest and reddest ‘star’ in this part of the sky. Now using your binoculars or telescope home in on Mars and very close by it you will see the Beehive cluster. If you watch over a succession of nights you will clearly see Mars marching right through the middle of the star cluster. Any one born between June 22nd and July 23rd will be interested in this as the Beehive cluster marks the heart of cancer the crab. Sorry, but cancer looks nothing like a crab to me

and it also contains no really bright prominent stars but never the less, there it is for you.

Fuengirola Astronomy Society. The next meeting of the Fuengirola Astronomy Society will be on Thursday 29th April 8.00pm at the El Coto bar and restaurant. I will be giving an illustrated talk about the Constellations and how to recognise them and then hopefully weather permitting we should be able to go outside and use the telescopes to see Saturn, Mars and of course the Beehive cluster. If any schools or colleges are interested in having the Planetarium brought into them before the summer holidays then details can be found on my website along with other updated Astronomy news at www.kencampbell.info To keep up-to-date with Ken Campbell or to take part in any of his events or lectures, or for more information visit www.kencampbell.info

Community Spirit of St. Rotary George at Imjin help Cudeca It's an awesome tale of courage against overwhelming odds - 4,000 British soldiers holding at bay 300,000 Chinese with bayonets and bare fists. Little wonder that those who saw it have never regarded St George's Day in the same way since.

As they perched on barren hills on the wrong side of the world, hopelessly outnumbered by an almost suicidal enemy, April 23rd soon became a scene of relentless horror for the 4,000 British troops caught up in Britain's bloodiest battle since World War II. Indeed, were it not for some exceptional courage and fine leadership, it might have gone down in history as the St George's Day Massacre. As it was, more than 1,000 British soldiers would be killed,

wounded or captured by the end of a battle, which has often been likened to the British stand against the Zulus at Rorke's Drift. And yet, today, the Battle of the Imjin River is fast fading from the national memory.

Given that many young people think that Churchill is a nodding dog from a television commercial, what hope is there for the poor, forgotten Korean War? What chance is there that future generations will grasp the importance of a three-year conflict which claimed more British lives than Iraq, Afghanistan and the Falklands combined? For the veterans of the Imjin, however, this week in April always brings back memories of savage handto-hand fighting at this almost forgotten battle.

Why dogs bark Dogs bark. It’s how they communicate with one another and us. What is not natural however, is excessive barking, which quickly becomes your problem, especially when the neighbours complain. If you have a barker, the only way to put a stop to it – excessive or not – is to first understand why your dog barks so, over the next few weeks I will be explaining this to you. There are five main reasons why a dog barks: alert/warning; attention seeking; boredom; loneliness/anxiety and because they are startled. Professional help from

your vet and a behaviourist is recommended in helping your dog cope with his separation anxiety. Sudden movements or noises, such as thunderstorms, fireworks or the slamming of car doors can startle any dog and cause him to bark. In order to curb this behaviour, he needs to become desensitised to those sounds. Once you understand why your dog barks, getting it under control, with time and patience, can be done.

A colourful festival with its roots in legend WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean

There are two legends that surround the celebration and commemoration of the May Crosses Festival, the Cruces de Mayo, celebrated in many parts of the world, and especially here in Andalucia.

Both are linked by the relationship between a son,a Roman leaderwho became a devout Christian, and his aged mother who watchedas the dead and dying miraculously recovered after being exposed to the True Cross - the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Roman Emperor Constantine and his army were beseiged on all sides in 312.Defeat stared him in the face and he prayed to God for guidance and help. Legend had it that he saw a vision of the cross of Jesus in the sky - with the words with this cross you will conquer emblazoned over it. He had a cross built and put at the front of his army, and secured a famous victory. In tribute he was baptized into the Christian church and ordered the building of many

churches. Constantine s mother, Helen, was a pious Christian, and in 325, at the age of 80, she was asked by her son to go to Jerusalem in search of the cross on which Jesus was crucified. According to legend she ordered the tearing down of a Temple to Venus which had been built over the site of Jesus' tomb near Calvary. During the excavations which followed three crosses were found - but which was the cross on which the Saviour died? Helen ordered the dead and dying to be brought to the site and there she saw miraculous recoveries as people were touched by one of the three crosses - and this she declared to be the True Cross. Before she died in Rome in 328 she

asked that the day on which she found the True Cross May 3rd - be remembered and commemorated each year. So the roots of this annual festival are religious - but in Andalucia it is more than a festival - it is a fiesta too and a time for singing, dancing and drinking as the sound of Sevillanas fill the air and flamenco frocks flounce through the streets. The Cruces de Mayo is celebrated throughout the province in towns and villages and pride and prestige is at stake...never more so than in Cordoba and Granada, where prize money is at stake too as judges determine which of the crosses, three metres high and decorated with beautiful flowers, is worthy of the top prize.

Competition is fierce. In Granada the main squares of the city, and the Albaicin and Realejo districts are festooned and in Cordoba there are more than 80 crosses spread throughout the city, filling each neighbourhood with the pungent scent of flowers. In Cordoba the Cruces de Mayo is a curtain raiser for the spectacular event that follows hard on its heels - the festival of the Patios....another hotly fought contest as the charming and extravagant patios (pictured above left)vie with each other. The patios of Cordoba are part of the city's rich Moorish legacy - filled to overflowing with pot plants, decorative tiles, and tinkling water features, they assault the senses with smell and a riot of

colour. They are traditionally regarded as the best patios in Spain and attract a huge number of visitors. The council actively encourages the maintenance of these shady oases and provides financial support, as well as prize money for the most beautiful. Cordoba is a tricky place to find a parking spot during these fantastic festivals so keep an eye open for the many coach trips advertised in inland towns and on the coast. So, for keen gardeners, and those who just enjoy a hugely colourful spectacle, the early part of May is a delight. It is a sign that Spring has arrived and it is time to startdoing what Andalucians do best shrugging off the winter blues and getting on with the party.

Good book, bad film

Brothers BY JIM SHERIDAN Starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman Sam (Maguire) is a war hero - a decorated Captain in the Marines, about to embark on his 4th tour of duty. He is a loving family man, devoted to his childhood sweetheart Grace (Portman), his wife and mother to his two young daughters. His brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) is just out of jail after serving time for armed robbery. Their father Hank, an ex soldier (Sam Shephard) makes little secret of his feelings - he is proud of Sam, and is contemptuous of his black sheep son Tommy. Sam

heads back to Afghanistan and his family is devastated by the news that he is missing in action, presumed dead following a helicopter crash. Tommy steps in to help out his sister-in-law and his two nieces. But Sam isn't dead, and the film cuts between the life at home of his wife and daughters as Tommy grows closer to the family, and the cruel torture inflicted on Sam by the Taliban who hold him prisoner. He finally returns, scarred and haunted by his experiences and the whole family is plunged into crisis

as Sam’s demons hold him fast. Jim Sheridan, director of In America, In the Name of The Father, and My Left Foot, is a sure hand at turning out riveting family dramas and this is no exception. All the cast are at their best - Portman as the bedrock of the family puts in a sensitive performance and for Maguire this darker role reveals new depths to his acting. The movie received a number of nominations during the awards season including a Golden Globe nod for Maguire in the best actor in a drama category.

LATEST DVD RELEASES

Nine BY ROB MARSHALL Starring Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman The Broadway hit moves from the stage to the silver screen in this musical remake of Federico Fellini´s 8 1/2. Day Lewis is the womanising movie director who has lost his

mojo. The star studded cast includes Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Kate Hudson and Penelope Cruz. It´s no Moulin Rouge but looks fantastic, and Cruz sizzles.

The Men Who Stare at Goats BY GRANT HESLOV Starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey A reporter meets a US special forces agent who reckons he is part of a crack secret unit using psychic powers in

the battle against Iraqi insurgents. Comedy drama a bit like the Coen Brothers make 'em.

I

know when I’m reading a good book. I start to think about the story even when I’m not page turning. I can’t wait to get ten minutes to myself to get a bit further on with the story and I’ve even been known to read the last page and work backwards until I find out what happens to a particular character in the plot. I get involved with a good book and over many hours I create in my mind many images of the landscapes, the surroundings and the people that I am reading about.

B

eing essentially lazy, I also am quite happy to spend a fraction of the time watching a film that portrays someone else’s vision of any given story, usually the director’s idea of the characters and how they fit into their surroundings. Sometimes when a book I have read is made into a film it is interesting to see how the key players vary from my own mental vision. There have been occasions when I have been surprised to see a ginger heroine or a more haggard leading man. Sometimes an accent can throw me from my own interpretation and sometimes I don’t recognize characters and locations at all.

N

o matter how different the film version from that in my own mind (which is obviously by far the more realistic and true to the original author’s intention), the worst thing that can happen to a book in the transition from page to celluloid is that a good story becomes a boring film.

T

his happened recently in the form of the long awaited film version of Alice Sebold’s modern classic, The Lovely Bones. I loved the book. I know I wasn’t the only one because a well thumbed copy passed around the office where I was working and we all agreed, it was a brilliant book.

S

et in the early 70’s in suburban America, The Lovely Bones tells the story of Susie Salmon, a 14 year old girl who is murdered on her way home from school. As her family falls apart following her disappearance, Susie gets to watch events unfolding from a kind of afterlife that is kind of like everyone’s idea of heaven without actually being religious in its portrayal. And it’s here that the film falls down for me.

CInEMAS ShowInG FILMS In EnGLISh To find out the times and location online, go to www.entradas.com, click on Malaga, go to Cine and on drop down list select “Cartelera V.O.” and click on film poster

I

n the book the afterlife is there, it’s described in some detail and Susie flows through it while she waits for her family to find resolution over her death. In the film however, too much time is given over to creating a Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds kind of psychedelic hippie dreamscape. A few minutes of this would have been enough to set the scene, instead director Peter Jackson gives us long disjointed scenes that leave you feeling like you’ve accidently eaten one of your nephew’s herbal brownies or mistakenly picked up the wrong hand-rolled ciggie.

T

rippy, over indulgent and boring. It’s such a shame because it was a good book and I’m sure lots of people were eagerly awaiting the film version. The only saving grace was the very natural performance by Susan Sarandon as Grandma Lynn and the stylish 70s sets.

N

ow I know it is popular to knock The Da Vinci Code, but Dan Brown’s quick paced and gripping book was definitely turned into one of the most disappointing films ever. The first time I saw the film I wondered how anyone who had not read the book could possibly follow the story. Or maybe that’s the point, if you don’t know the original story, the gaps in the plotline become twists and the unexplained symbolism becomes part of the mystery of the adventure.

I

also remember one scene in the film of The Silence Of The Lambs that had obviously suffered from some earlier plot editing. In the book by Thomas Harris there is a whole storyline surrounding Valentines cards but this is never discussed in the film and yet when Valentines cards are discovered with a severed head, Agent Starling points it out as a major clue. Having said that, I guess I’m not including Lambs in my good book bad film list, even though I found the book scarier than the film, but then I do remember reading it by torchlight in a tent on a windy campsite. It was definitely scarier than watching the film version from the safety of my threepiece suite.

“Think before you speak” is the motto for the week as you could find yourself in the midst of a sensitive situation. You are heading towards a time in June when juggling worries and risks are likely to be a thing of the past. The advice is to go with the flow until then, enjoy relaxing with loved ones and building upon existing relationships. Gradually things are going to become easier this week and your stress levels should start to come down a notch. Mercury going retrograde in your sign is urging you to reconsider an old arrangement or agreement; too much time has been spent worrying lately. You are being given a chance to review a plan and see the many flaws that were in it. Lately you have had to deal with changing goalposts and watching plans slip through your fingers, there has been a lot to juggle. When all looks futile that is the time to keep going – events will improve soon. A problem seems enormous right now – you cannot see a solution to it because there is a missing piece that is preventing you from seeing the whole. In fact it is leaving you completely baffled. As Mercury moves from stationery to retrograde you will inadvertently stumble on the solution. A blessing is coming your way in the form of time and money; shortly you will have found all the essential ingredients needed to bake a well risen, mouth-watering sponge cake. You are craving an element of change in your life but the restrictions taking place have made it very hard to make certain moves. It may have felt as though you have been hitting your head against a brick wall. The struggle you are facing will be less of a trial if you work together with a team, or with a special person who is offering an element of support. In the past you have felt safer going it alone – now is the time to allow others in. Inspiration grabs you this week and your visions and faith in your future dreams fill your being with hope. This week gives you a chance to repair the lost faith in your abilities, yourself and in the universe. You have the opportunity to weave a lifetime’s magic in a short space of time – once you know what you want and where you wish to go. If there has been disrespect within a relationship through lack of communication then you have the power to move this situation forward. This week you will get to know how highly valued you are. A situation is pushing you to realise how strong and patient you can be. Others will be looking to you for some sort of support and steadying influence – they need a voice of reason right now and that voice is yours. In your personal life you will be balancing your priorities, making sure that your needs are met and time is spent on making positive things happen for the future.

LIBRA

If you try and approach a situation with the same method you may find that it just doesn’t have the same effect anymore. The old ways of doing things have been thrown out of the window and you are being asked to look for an alternative, innovative way to get round a problem. Think outside of the box and the answer will come. Your emotional foundations are in the process of rd September 23 - being shook up – perhaps someone is knocking on your door causing a shift nd October 22 in perception.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

Like a volcano you have been bubbling and boiling under the surface and temperatures have reached a peak now, the stress has been all too much, forcing your hand to make some sort of dramatic decision. An old discussion will be reviewed and re-assessed within the coming days with a loved one – plans may be readjusted to suit changing situations and feelings. A restriction in movement has made you more attuned to what is important in your life.

SAGITTARIUS Moves you made earlier in the year that you thought had no effect on a current situation will start to bear fruit. An abandoned plan will be re-awoken perhaps, some things just take time to manifest or season. Know that everything you do has a chain reaction even if you cannot see it at the time and use this as an inspiration to carry on. An opportunity occurs that will allow nd November 22 - you to let go of a nagging worry and breathe a sigh of relief. st December 21

CAPRICORN Security means a lot to you and you will put up with a lot in order to hang onto it, even if it means sticking at something you do not particularly enjoy or being with someone who annoys you. You can take it for so long though, Capricorn, and then you make a sudden decision and change pathways – you are at this point now, wanting to instruct a new direction, push a new venture December 22nd or seek out those who are more closely aligned to your nature. Both scenarios can have a dramatic effect on an outcome - you are reminded of this now. Uranus opposing Saturn is stripping down the barriers that you have put up in your life and you could be feeling rebellious and want to speak your mind; it may be better to just let it go and concentrate on yourself and moving your own life forward. Doubts and worries that you have been dwelling upon can darken a potential outcome in your mind. This week does bring real reasons to be cheerful and you will realise that some of your fears were unfounded. Do not keep thoughts bottled up, the more you express the better you will feel, when Mercury goes retrograde like it has now, it allows your imagination to open up, causing you to dream vividly and wish for more. Some wishes do come true.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

As the weather was so appalling last week the gardens are still difficult to do anything in other than get covered in mud, so we're going to have a nice one-pot warming recipe this week, and with very little washing up it's even nicer!

Chicken and Broccoli Risotto

(Serves 4)

Ingredients: ● 40gr butter ● 2 tablespoons olive oil ● 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, diced in ½ inch chunks ● ½ onion finely chopped ● 1 clove garlic, finely chopped ● 300gr arborio rice ● 1 litre hot chicken stock ● 250gr broccoli florets, cooked to al dente ● 3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese ● Salt and pepper to taste

Method ● Heat 15gr of the butter with the oil in a large, heavy based saucepan then add the chicken and fry gently for 2 – 3 minutes. Add the onion and fry until soft but not coloured then add the garlic and fry until the garlic is golden.

● Add the rice to the pan and stir for 2 minutes covering it with the oil. Add the hot stock, 1 ladle at a time stirring constantly and allowing it to be absorbed before adding more. This should take about 25 minutes, leaving the rice tender but still firm.

● Add the broccoli florets to the rice with the Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper to taste and stir in the remaining butter. ● Serve with crusty Ciabatta and a salad.

SPANISH POCO A POCO By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

by Cathy Stronach

Two weeks ago we learned how to talk about what we usually do. As promised, this week we're going to talk about what we used to do. It involves the same verb "soler" put into the past tense. Solía means I used to. Simply tack on the relevant verb. Solía comer mucho chocolate - I used to eat a lot of chocolate Solía beber demasiado café - I used to drink too much coffee Solía trabajar todos los días - I used to work every day To talk about what you didn't use to do all you have to do is start with no. So: No solía ver tanto la televisión - I didn't used to watch so much TV No solía ir de paseo al campo - I didn't used to go for walks in the country No solía beber tanto vino - I didn't used to drink so much wine You used to is Solías Solías trabajar en el jardin todos los días - You used to work in the garden every day No solías hablar tanto español - You didn't used to speak so much Spanish Solíamos is we used to Solíamos comprar los períodicos ingleses - We used to buy the English newspapers Solíamos cenar a las seis - We used to have dinner at six o'clock No solíamos ir a la cama a medianoche - We didn't used to go to bed at midnight So now you can compare your life here with what you did before and in spite of the odd drop of recent rain hopefully you will come to the conclusion that life here in Spain is in many ways preferable. Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time

Health&Beauty NEWS

Web child health advice is 'wrong' According to UK researchers, typing your child's medical problem into Google is unlikely to deliver much in the way of good advice. The Nottingham-based team used the search engine to find UK-based advice on five common issues, including breastfeeding and autism, and found that only about 200 of 500 sites offered correct information. They reported that governmentrun sites were the only completely reliable source. Increasingly, parents are turning to search engines for a second opinion - or even a sole one - on medical matters, and many doctors are concerned that the huge quantity of information and advice is

at best unreliable, and in some cases misleading or even dangerous.

A March 2010 study found that regular use of aspirin at least twice weekly increased the risk of suffering hearing loss by 12% in men. Those younger than 50 had a 33% increased risk of hearing loss. Use of other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen also increased the risk of hearing loss.

Prostate cancer A 2008 study found that men who used aspirin and other NSAIDs regularly had about 10% lower levels of prostate-specific antigens. The researchers suggested this may hinder the detection of prostate cancer in regular aspirin users.

A 2008 study suggested diabetics taking aspirin to prevent a first heart attack are no less likely to experience an attack than those taking a placebo. People with diabetes are at least twice as likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke as the general public.

Heart attack or stroke A 2008 study found that nearly 30% of people with cardiovascular disease who took prescribed aspirin were resistant to its effects. Such "aspirin resistance," the study found, makes such patients four times as likely as those for whom aspirin had an effect to have a heart attack, stroke, or die.

People with mild to moderate incontinence should give themselves three months to see if a change in life style gets results. However, call the doctor right away if you have other symptoms such as painful urination, or urine that's cloudy or tinged with blood. This is also advisable in the case of large "accidents", especially if they are accompanied by numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, vision changes, or a change in bowel habits. - AVOID CAFFEINE, a well-known diuretic, which can also irritate the bladder and stimulate muscle contractions, which can aggravate the symptoms of urge incontinence. Doctors advise limiting caffeine intake to no more than 200 milligrams daily, about the amount in 12 ounces of coffee.

- REDUCE TENSION, which magnifies body sensations in a negative way. For an hour each day do something just for yourself. Another strategy for sudden urges is to breathe deeply - if you can calm yourself down for 30 to 60 seconds, there's a good chance the urge will go away.

Last week we had the pros. This week we bring you the cons of taking aspirin. Hearing loss

Coping with incontinence

- LOSE EXCESS WEIGHT. Many incontinence sufferers have found that losing just a few pounds can reduce the number of accidents.

Pros and cons of aspirin Heart attacks in people with diabetes

Beauty Tip

- DO SPECIAL EXERCISES, such as those developed in the late 1940s by Arnold Kegel, M.D., to help women with stress incontinence during and after pregnancy. The experts say that these exercises reduce and may even prevent some forms of incontinence in both sexes and at all ages.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said NHS Choices was now the most popular health website in the UK, receiving nearly nine million hits a month. He said: "It offers a range of health information on over 800 treatments and conditions, waiting times and survival rates for elective procedures. Patients using the site are also able to post feedback on hospitals and GP surgeries."

RESEARCH

e cons:

News - Breakthroughs Treatments - Trends

Heart attack death Stomach troubles in women A 2008 review found that earlier studies showed a large benefit in men taking aspirin to reduce the rates of fatal heart attack, but women did not receive the same advantage. A 2009 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation suggests some women may benefit from aspirin's action against ischemic strokes, however.

People taking aspirin or another NSAID are at higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and stomach ulcers - particularly with long-term use of the drug.

- GO EASY ON THE FLUIDS. If you drink a little less, your incontinence problem should ease up. It's better to sip water throughout the day rather than pouring it down all at once. But remember that cutting your fluid intake to below-normal levels can lead to dehydration, worsening urinary problems and even cause serious illness. - DON'T SMOKE. Nicotine and other chemicals in tobacco smoke can irritate the bladder and make it overactive. Also, if you have stress incontinence, coughing can trigger leaking. - SUBSTITUTE CRANBERRY JUICE which is key to bladder health because its acidity helps prevent urinary tract infections. - EMPTY YOUR BLADDER ON A REGULAR BASIS. Holding too long may lead to bladder infection and an overstretched bladder. Also, if you have a too-full bladder and a weak sphincter muscle, you're likely to leak when you cough, sneeze, or laugh.

Risk of bleeding Aspirin is a blood thinner; it makes the blood's platelets less sticky, so to speak. Because of this mechanism, the drug makes blood less likely to clot.

People&Fashion A Beano find for charity shop

Chloe wows talent judges

A record number of viewers for the first episode of Britain´s Got Talent watched ten-year-old Chloe Hickinbottom wow the judges with her rendition of the wartime favourite "White Cliffs of Dover" And she has had the thumbs up too from Forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn, whose signature song it was. Dame Vera watched the show and later said that she thought Chloe did "great" - the singer, 93, had taken the song back into the album charts last year when her greatest hits album took the No 1 spot and she had feared that the youngster was just too young to generate the passion the World War II

favourite needed but later applauded Chloe´s maturity. More than 12 million tuned into Saturday´s first show of the fourth series as the judges look to see if the phenomenon that is SuBo - last year's runner up Susan Boyle - can be repeated. The viewing figures meant that the show grabbed a 49 per cent audience share - the highest ever for a launch episode of the talent show.

Chloe, who had never before performed in public, was inspired by her grandad´s war tales and his love of the song. She watched clips of Dame Vera on YouTube to prepare herself for her big moment - and she got a resounding "Yes" vote from the judges, who put her through to the next round. In the meantime, over on BBC1 Graham Norton, host of "Over The Rainbow", has said he is

unhappy that BGT is going head-to-head with the Andrew Lloyd Webber show which is trying to find a new Dorothy for the Wizard of Oz. Norton reckons that audiences will switch off from Dorothy halfway through, when BGT begins on ITV, and worries that the girls who perform in the second half of the show will be disadvantaged by the loss of viewers, and won´t get a fair crack of the whip. Well, that's showbiz...

Everyone dreams of the moment when they walk into a charity shop and discover a rare gem that could make them their fortune. And volunteers at the St Andrew´s Scotland charity shop for Cancer Research UK who found an old copy of the Beano annual in a bag of donations thought it was worth spending a bit of time online doing some research just in case. And it's just as well they did - the annual turned out to be from 1939, the first year it was ever published.

Beano publishers D.C. Thomson in Dundee confirmed its authenticity and experts say it could be worth a cool £2000. Now it will go under the hammer at Comic Book Auctions Ltd in June. The auction goes live on May 16th at www.compalcomics.com and bids close on June 1st. The auctioners say the annual is extremely rare and a tremendous example of the first ever Beano book. The money raised by its sale will go to Cancer Research UK.

FOR WOMEN WITH STYLE

MAY 7TH 2010: A deadline to be reckoned with. DON´T MISS THIS FINAL OPPORTUNITY On April 7th, after a 7(!) year wait, the Junta de Andalucía finally published the long overdue “reglamento” i.e. a clarification on how to interpret and apply the LOUA (the law that regulates everything that concerns building and developing). It was expected that this rulebook would clarify at long last how to go about regularising, legalizing and in general clean up the mess left behind after the building boom of the last ten years. Ten years during which it seems that real estate agents, buyers and sellers, builders, solicitors, local councils, provincial authorities and Junta de Andalucía joined efforts in order to create the biggest confusion and sheer legal jungle possible. And these new rules do indeed open up possibilities to solve a few problems down the line. The problem however is that because of the way it has been set up, it will take many years (read: decades) to sort everything out. The fact that the responsibilities and competences in the matter have been passed to the local councils, with the Junta looking over their shoulders, will hardly help in speeding up the process. Sadly, the new rules above anything else emphasise the restrictive part of the law: draconian fines (minimum 100% of property value), express demolition (on

top of the horrendous fines demolition of illegal builds will have to be executed within a month after opening a file on your property), segregations will become virtually impossible, permits for new buildings will be just about impossible to get.... But article 27 in particular speaks about something which has major consequences: the way to register your house and indeed your property. It will be in the (very) near future impossible to register your property without a certificate from your local council. For years now, this certificate has been about impossible to get, and it will even become more complicated from now on. This means that you won’t be able to register your property with a certificate of antiquity. This certificate states that your property has been build more then 4 years ago and that therefore you are no longer libel for fines and (in the vast majority of cases) demolition. Up to now this has been the way most houses in the rural areas have been registered in the land registry. It is obvious that this applies also to

952 45 12 69

extensions, pools and change of use (e.g. from warehouse or almacen to vivienda or dwelling). This is of utmost importance because not being registered in the land registry makes the property virtually unsellable. It would also complicate life no end if you would have to put up a defence in the case of a fining procedure being started up against you. HOWEVER: this new set of rules will be effective one month after the publication. This means that if you are in a situation where you build, extended, or reformed your property before June 2006, that you have still got a very narrow window of opportunity to register your property. MAY 7th 2010 is the deadline. As always, at todoserv we are adapting quickly to new circumstances and urgencies. If any of this affects you or somebody you know, and want to know how to go about still registering before time runs out, call our offices for a free information appointment. We will be

able to process any file that we get before the end of April. All you need to bring us is a copy of your deeds (preferably), an IBI bill (rates) or any other way to identify your property. Within minutes we will be able to tell you whether your property still can be registered or not.

Moto GP Japan new dates: The race scheduled for Sunday April 25th will take place on October 3rd as Championship round 14 before events in Malaysia and Australia. While most of the freight was flown straight on from last weekend's season-opener in Qatar, getting personnel there would be a big problem. The next round will now be at Spain's Jerez circuit on May 2nd.

Button the rainmaster

RAC calls for re-think on retesting for OAP One two for British McLaren pair as the weather once again plays a huge part motorists in the outcome of a Grand Prix weekend, with Button coming out on top An incident packed race at the Chinese Grand Prix saw Jenson Button win for the second time this season and take over the Formula One championship lead by beating team-mate Lewis Hamilton in a 1-2 finish for McLaren. With rapidly changing weather conditions, most drivers had to pit at least four times, but 2009 World Champion Button once again showed that he is so good at reading conditions as well as looking after his tyres, that he needed only two stops while Hamilton had to make four. ''It was a tricky race out there and again we called it right,'' Button said. ''It was not just about being quick, it's about reading the conditions.'' Mercedes' Nico

never really in contention as his too hasty change to wet tyres and then back to dry ones proved to be one pit stop too many. His Red Bull teammate Mark Webber using the same strategy could only finish eighth, ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Mercedes' Michael Schumacher.

Hamilton congratulates team mate Jenson Button

Rosberg finished third. The German driver took over the lead when he and Button elected to stay out on slicks while most others went to intermediates and soon realized they had to switch back. Rosberg managed to hold on to the lead until the 19th lap when he ran wide on his rapidly wearing tires. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso flew away at the start, only

to be penalized for jumping the lights, and given a drivethrough penalty. His though was one of the drives of the day as he finished an amazing fourth after five trips to the pit lane. Renault's Robert Kubica finished fifth and teammate Vitaly Petrov earned his firstever F1 points by taking seventh. Sebastian Vettel, from pole position was

After four races this season, Button leads the drivers' standings with 60 points, ahead of Rosberg's 50. Hamilton and Alonso are tied for third with 49 points. McLaren also took over the lead in the constructors' standings, with 109, ahead of Ferrari with 90. Mercedes jumped to third with 78, ahead of Red Bull with 73. The next race will be the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona on May 9th.

Motor Sport returns to Crystal Palace Two full days of high octane action, with GT cars, single seaters and performance saloons battling an array of classic racing machines for the title of fastest car at the Park It's been over a decade, but Crystal Palace will once again play host to a national motorsport event. Motorsport at the Palace, sponsored by the Ancaster Group, who have confirmed that a two-day sprint event will be run over the May Bank Holiday weekend (May 30th-31st), re-igniting the spirit of racing at the Park. Organised by Sevenoaks and District Motor Club (Sevenoaks DMC), with the support of the London Borough of Bromley, the two-day event will allow visitors to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the legendary machines which powered the likes of Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Stirling Moss to victory. Competitors will race along a section of the old track, incorporating Pond Hairpin, the Big Tree Bend part of the Terrace Straight and the infamous North Tower Crescent - in a bid to set the fastest time of the day. Competitors will each donate a minimum £10 in support of St. Christopher's Hospice and the Royal

London Society for the Blind; exhibitors will also contribute, ensuring that Motorsport at the Palace provides a lasting benefit to the community. A great day out for all the family is promised, including an appearance by children's TV character Roary the Racing

Car and his mechanic Big Chris. A spokesperson added: "The very welcome guest appearance of Roary

the Racing Car means our younger guests will certainly have something to tell their friends about. "I'm sure Roary will also be keen to meet some of his older relatives in the paddock; they can tell him what life was like when they raced here many years ago." Tickets are priced at £10 per day and advance tickets will be available at a discount, from the website: www.motorsportat thepalace.co.uk

Under the proposals from the motoring group, health professionals would be trained to advise pensioners on their fitness to drive

Pensioners should not be forced to retake their driving test every 12 months, claims the RAC Foundation in a new report released recently. Proposals from the DVLA could see all over 70s being asked to take the driving test again after figures showed they were more likely to be seriously injured or killed on the road than younger drivers. However, the RAC report, Maintaining Safe Mobility for the Ageing Population, shows ageing drivers do not cause more accidents than the rest of motorists – and even cause less accidents than younger drivers. Pensioners are more liable to be injured in car crashes because they are frailer, not because they are worse drivers, the report explains. And the RAC said forcing pensioners to retake the test is stressful for the people involved and won’t reduce accidents on UK roads. The proposals

However, they did admit the ageing process and reduced time on the road for over 80s was a factor in causing more accidents. There is an estimated 3.7 million people born before the war driving on UK roads today, and the RAC wishes to see more opportunities for self-regulation instead of retesting.

Boxer Valero found hanged in cell World champion Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero has been found dead in a police cell after being detained for killing his wife. Police chief Wilmer Flores said Valero, 28, had tied his clothes to a cell bar and hanged himself. Valero was arrested after police officers found the body of his 24-year-old wife Jennifer Viera in a hotel in the Venezuelan city of Valencia.

Beijing gold medallist Ohuruogu came second in last year's inaugural Games, with Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt winning the men's event. "The Great City Games was a brilliant event - a 150m track laid in the

middle of the city," said Ohuruogu. "Despite the weather the atmosphere was great as the crowd really got into it." Bolt, who set a new world best in Manchester, will not feature this year but world 100m silver medallist Tyson Gay and world 200m silver medallist Alonso Edwards will race on the specially erected track on May 16th.

Ticket fiasco - man dies in queue

Two of the world's top female climbers are vying to become the first woman to conquer the world's 14 highest mountains. The rivals and their teams are each preparing to make an assault on their final peaks - and either could win. Spanish climber Edurne Pasaban has just one more climb to make after scaling the deadly Himalayan peak Annapurna on Saturday. The 36-year-old Basque from northern Spain reached the top of the 8,091m mountain alongside several other Spanish climbers, a spokesman for her team told AFP news agency. Only Tibet's daunting 8,027m Shisha Pangma stands between the Spanish climber and a

climb. It has claimed 130 lives and has already defeated the South Korean, when she was forced to turn back in fog and blizzards last year. Pasaban was also beaten once by Annapurna when only 1000 metres from the summit.

Tempers flared as the computer system serving 11 outlets in the nine host cities crashed minutes after opening. One woman who had queued for hours in a room without air conditioning with 500 other people said :“They can’t even get it right for 500 people, what are they going to do when they have 500,000 to arrange for.”

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again What an eventful week the last seven days have been as the Icelandic volcano has completely disrupted the plans of thousands of people, myself included. I had travelled to the U.K. for a short visit and intended to return last Friday in time to play the C.O.G.S. outing at Antequera Golf Club but due to the unforeseen volcanic eruption, I have been stuck in good old Blighty booking and rebooking flights every day without any luck. As it turned out, for an unprecedented second time this year, the Spanish weather intervened and the day up in the mountains had to be postponed. The trip has been re-scheduled for Saturday May 1st with the first tee-off time at 10.50 a.m. so we are all going to have to get up pretty early that day. In the meantime here I am stuck in England and I have to say the weather over the last few days here has been absolutely perfect for golf, although as yet, I have not managed to fit in a game. The European Tour has touched down in China and the surprise winner of the U.S. P.G.A title last year, Korea’s Y.E.Yang, played superbly from start to finish to win by two shots. The equal runnersup were two Welshmen, Rhys Davies and Stephen Dodd, with yet another man from the valleys, Jamie Donaldson in a share for sixth place. It would be really good to see at least one of these players make the grade for the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in South Wales in September and if they keep travelling around the globe, who knows, maybe one will. That is of course if the ash cloud clears up soon!!! So until next time... keep your head down. Dave

Another week of woe Furyk wins as Davis in La Liga for Malaga calls foul on himself Malaga salvaged a midweek draw away at Osasuna, where they went behind twice to goals from Pandiani, and both times came back well to force a draw with goals from Caicedo and Baha. Things were looking hopeful for a good result in Sunday’s home relegation battle against Valladolid who were 4 points adrift and second from bottom. But it was Valladolid who showed the most fighting spirit and they went close with efforts from Aleman and then Medunjanim.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is not concerned by his side's daunting 24-hour travel plans to Madrid. The volcanic ash cloud that has caused chaos across Europe is forcing the Reds to journey by train, coach and plane for Thursday's Europa League semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid

Brian Davis congratulates Jim Furyk at Hilton Head

Brian Davis couldn't deny what he saw and knew he was honour-bound to tell the world. Davis brushed a loose reed during his backswing on the first playoff hole, calling a two-stroke penalty on himself that gave Jim Furyk a victory at the Verizon Heritage Classic in South Carolina. Davis immediately asked for PGA Tour tournament director Slugger White and shared what he saw on the shot. White consulted with officials who checked TV replays and confirmed Davis' worst fear: His violation cost him a chance at his first PGA Tour victory. What Davis lost on the course will be regained in his reputation for his honourable act, White said. "That will come back to him in spades, tenfold, "He's

class, first class," White said. Davis' error, a violation of rule 13.4 against moving a loose impediment during a takeaway, was indiscernible but for slow motion replays. He immediately conceded victory to Furyk, who putted out for his 15th PGA Tour win and second since March. Furyk didn't know what to do at first. He raised his putter and tipped his cap to the cheering and confused crowd, then embraced his children who ran to meet their championship dad. Furyk earned $1,026,000 million. Davis earned $615,000 for his fourth place finish. "To have the tournament come down that way is definitely not the way I wanted to win," Furyk said. "It's obviously a tough loss for him and I respect and admire what he did."

O'Sullivan warned over behaviour Three-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has been warned about his conduct after making an offensive gesture in his match with Liang Wenbo. O'Sullivan, 34, opened up a 7-2 overnight lead in the first round tie but missed a simple red in the seventh frame. O'Sullivan responded by making a one-fingered gesture at the ball, earning a rebuke from referee Colin Humphries.
