INWARD INVESTMENT - National news

Ford announces major investment One of the world's leading car manufacturers has announced a huge investment in Spain which will be a boost for the economy and bring new jobs. Ford Europa president Stephen Odell announced that the company will invest more than €800 million in the Almusafes plant in Valencia, which will have the exclusive manufacture in Europe of two new models: the Kuga all-terrain and the Transit Comet van. He said the investment would create “hundreds” of jobs. Mr Odell said that bosses at Ford Motor headquarters were so impressed by how well the Almusafes plant was functioning that there was a

strong possibility of further investment in the near future. He said Ford planned to launch 20 new models over the next three years as part of the company's restructuring and renovation on the European market. The president of Ford España, José Manuel Machado, said it was the company's biggest investment since the Almusafes plant started operating 35 years ago. The Almusafes plant already

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Good & Bad

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

last week I was away on holiday. no, definitely not a cruise this time! I have friends who go cruising all the time and love it. Personally, I think they must have stomachs of iron as I spent the whole of the time feeling ill then another 3 days after we got back recovering. cruising - definitely not for me. So, this time, some friends came over and we hired an apartment in Almeria. Yep, Roquetas de Mar again where I normally stay in hotels and I know it’s boring to go to the same place time after time but it’s also relaxing as you don’t have to worry about the sights you may be missing as you’ve seen them all before! As it was my birthday, our friends paid for everything and on the day of my birthday we went to Mini-Hollywood which we’ve done features on before in The news and they’ve also got a great little zoo so I wandered around happy as larry talking to all the animals! Back to the grind now though and while I was away, all manner of things have been going on. Our Sue was taken into hospital to have a stent put into one of her heart arteries and is recovering at home. We all wish her well, especially me as I rely on her good humour and mad ways to keep me going! And also, a friend of ours younger sister died suddenly so our hearts go out to her and Melody’s family. On a good note, Sierra Gorda Bistro is thriving and Siboney has reopened in la Trocha under new management so it’s well worth a trip up here into the sticks to see what’s going on!

Attack on mayor to be investigated Madrid regional government spokeswoman Dolores Carrion has said every effort will be made to identify the people who booed Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon and his wife as they were walking their dog on Monday night. Dozens of people had followed them in a threatening manner for about 500 metres, protesting about this year's ban on live music in the Chueca square during the Gay Pride festival, until a car whisked the couple and their dog away. The festival's organisers have deplored the incident, which has been harshly criticised by political friend and foe alike. The Izquierda Unida's spokesman in the City Council, Angel Perez, accused the “bullies” of Nazi-style showing off. The man who ran against Gallardon for mayor on May 22nd, Jaime

Lissavetzky, condemned “any persecution in public of any citizen and especially of the mayor”. Sra Carrion said footage

Minimum wage to be raised Labour minister Valeriano Gomez announced on Tuesday that the government will raise the minimum wage by 1.3 per cent to €641 a month. The minister said the emergency fund known as Fogasa, which is used among other things to pay workers their severance pay when their former employers are unable to do so, would not need to be topped up by increased employer contributions for another four years or so. The announcements appear to be aimed at appeasing both bosses and workers, after they failed to support government measures approved last Friday aimed at reducing chronically high unemployment by introducing more flexibility in labour relations. The reforms are intended to loosen the country's rigid system of industry-wide collective

bargaining and allow greater leeway at the company level. Union leaders were angered by a part of the package that will allow employers to adjust working hours according to the workload, business groups said the changes do not go far enough. Juan Rosell, the president of the Spanish Confederation of Employers’ Organizations (CEOE), said earlier this week that the government's plan would do little to encourage company bosses who have become “panicked” about hiring more people because of inflexible terms of employment. The World Bank and other international financial organisations have identified the country’s rigid labour market as one of the main reasons why Spain’s jobless rate has more than doubled since the onset of the world financial crisis.

Death of a rebel Jorge Semprun, who fought with the resistance in France during WW2 and ended up in a German concentration camp, died at his home in Paris last week. He was 87. He came from a distinguished family of Spanish lawyers and politicians, including a former prime minister, who left for France during the Civil War. He was a member of the Communist Party until he was expelled in 1964 for deviating too far

from the party line. For years, he was persona non grata in Spain after his bestselling 1977 memoir, “The Autobiography of Federico Sanchez,” cast doubt on the extent to which the Socialist Party had broken with its Stalinist roots. The title referred to Mr Semprun’s pseudonym while serving as a clandestine organizer for the party, which had been outlawed during Franco’s decades in power.

He remained in France much of his life, channelling his literary talents into Oscarnominated screenplays, including director Constantin Costa-Gavras’s “Z” (1969) and director Alain Resnais’s 1966 drama “La guerre est finie” (The War Is Over), the second of which starred Yves Montand as a courier in the Spanish communist underground.

National News Early election ruled out In response to rumours that the general election will be brought forward to November this year, the Socialist Party's organisation secretary Marcelino Iglesias told reporters on Monday "All I have to say is that the government intends on holding general elections when they are scheduled, in the spring of 2012." Speaking after the weekly meeting of the party's permanent committee, Iglesias assured reporters that even without the support of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV)

and Catalan CiU party for the 2012 budget, "the parliamentary session can still continue" through spring. The only top Socialist to call for an early election has been Castilla-La Mancha's outgoing regional premier José María Barreda, who said during a TV interview that “maybe the move could be for the best”. And newspapers reports indicate that political parties in both the Basque Country and Catalonia are gearing up for a November election.

Deadline for naming new judges Speaker José Bono (pictured) has given the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular until the end of June to appoint new judges to the Constitutional Court. Several judges should have been replaced up to three years ago but the government has refused to accept a judge nominated by the PP and the PP have refused to withdraw the nomination. Three judges, two known progressive (Socialist) ones and a

conservative, resigned on Monday in an attempt to break the impasse but the Court's president refused to

accept their resignations. Now both parties are saying they will meet the June 30th deadline.

Price war benefits smokers Imperial Tobacco, the world's fourth-largest tobacco company and the market leader in Spain, warned on Monday that a slump in the sale of cigarettes has led to a fierce price war in the country. The group of Guardia Civil from Jaen who set up the NGO “Tricorn hats without frontiers”

Tricorn hats without frontiers First there were doctors without frontiers, then fire fighters and now the Guardia Civil has decided to set up its first NGO – Tricorn hats without frontiers. The idea was born at the Guardia Civil barracks in Baeza, Jaen province, but has since spread across the

country and now has more than 300 affiliates. Founder Julian Arribas said that there are many humanitarian-minded Guardia who have international experience working in disaster spots and rescuing immigrants at sea. He said their special concern were the immigrants who have

suffered in their own countries and are currently suffering racist attacks here as hate mongers accuse them of stealing jobs from the local people. One of the NGO’s first actions will be to organise a padel contest in September to raise funds for the people of Western Sahara.

Because of the economic crisis, smokers are trying to cut down or buy contraband where possible. As a result, the average retail price of cigarettes has fallen 10 per cent since the end of April and Imperial – which sells brands including Ducados Rubio, Fortuna Red Line

and Nobel Style – has reduced the price of packets of Ducados, JPS and West from €3.40 to €3.30, after Philip Morris cut the price of its L&M brand and British American Tobacco did the same with Pall Mall. The government has

contributed considerably to the cutback by smokers. It introduced a ban on smoking in public places on January 2nd and raised cigarette duty in December to replenish state coffers. This came on top of a VAT increase last July from 16 per cent to 18 per cent.

Protesters strike camp The Real Democracy Now movement started pulling out of Madrid's Puerta del Sol where it had been camping out since May 15th, assuring the press that “we're not going, we're

expanding”. The movement now plans to concentrate on specific actions in cities across the country but left an “information booth” behind to keep the general

public informed. Local businessmen were already complaining on Monday that the booth almost occupies as much space as the sit-in.

Anonymous avenges arrests In an apparent response to the arrest of three suspected members of the Anonymous hacking group in Barcelona, Valencia and Almeria last Friday, the National Police's web page was down for at least an hour on Sunday evening. The group had issued a statement on Saturday warning that they intended take out the website. The National Police said on Sunday morning that the group planned to publish sensitive information about members of the security forces and politicians on different web pages that sympathise with the Basque terrorist group ETA. The three suspected members of the group were arrested in connection with hacking attacks on web sites belonging to the Ministry of Culture, the Central Electoral Council, the General Society of Authors

and Editors and the National Employment Institute (INEM), among others, which had all been out of service for several hours on Saturday, May 21st. Anonymous has also claimed responsibility for attacks on Sony, Spanish banks and coordinated action in defence of whistleblowing site Wikileaks. The three men arrested last week are said to have been involved in coordinating the group's activity in Spain. In a statement, the National Police said that a computer seized in the home of one of the three was used in the

hacks. The arrests were the culmination of an investigation that began in October 2010, when Spanish cyber police started combing through millions of lines of chat logs to identify who was coordinating the group's activities. Some of the attacks made by Anonymous members used a web-based tool called Loic to bombard target sites with data, and it appears that Loic did a poor job of hiding the identity of the people using it. Arrests had been made in the US, UK and Holland of Anonymous members, prior to the raids in Spain.

Prince's award for Ashoka founder Bill Drayton, CEO and Founder of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for International Cooperation last week. The awards are Spain's highest in the field of scientific, technical, cultural, social, and humanistic work performed at an international level. The jury chose Mr Drayton out of 25 other candidates from 18 countries. In the past, the award has gone to Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachov, among others, and to organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Health Organization. Mr Drayton founded Ashoka in 1980 with the dream of creating a world where every individual has the freedom, confidence, and support to effectively respond to pressing social problems.

Migrant workers clash with police

Hundreds of Syrian men and boys have taken to the hills around the beleaguered town of Jisr al-Shughour, fleeing the scorched earth tactics of the Assad regime's tanks and militias. Reports from the town, which was recaptured by Syrian forces on Sunday, said 16 bodies had been found during the course of the day. Government claims that the city had been taken over by "armed gangs" who fought a vicious rearguard action against the advancing army were an

exaggeration, opposition spokesmen said. They reported that hundreds of unarmed local men had been rounded up and arrested during the operation, and those who tried to flee were shot. They said the army had moved into surrounding villages, making more arrests and burning crops. The United

Nations has said that more than 10,000 Syrians have fled the violent repression of opposition led by President Bashar al-Assad and his brother, Maher. The protests began in midMarch and have spread across the country. Human rights groups say at least 1,300 people have been killed in the

crackdown. More than 5,000 refugees have registered with Turkish officials, but thousands more may have entered the country unofficially. Thousands more are grouped at the border, awaiting the army's next move. On the Turkish side, four camps have been set up for those fleeing.

Chinese migrant workers clashed with police for several hours last week outside the southern city of Guangzhou. About 1,000 protesters set fire to cars and damaged government buildings on Sunday night near the city in China's manufacturing heartland, and the police

reportedly fired tear gas and deployed armoured vehicles. The protests began over the alleged mistreatment of a pregnant migrant worker by security guards who pushed her to the ground while they tried to make her move her stall from outside a supermarket.

Italy now main entry point

Vietnam bolsters military stance

Italy has replaced Greece as the main point of entry for illegal migrants to the EU, with numbers more than doubling in the first quarter of 2011. Frontex, the EU borders agency, said 32,906 migrants had arrived in the first three months, two-thirds of them on the Italian island of Lampedusa. The GreekTurkish border had become the main entrypoint after Spain and Italy clamped down last year, but numbers to Italy surged back amid unrest in Libya and Tunisia. Hundreds of would-be

Amid rising tensions with China, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has issued a decree about a potential military call-up, outlining who would be exempt from military draft if war broke out.

migrants have drowned in recent months while attempting perilous sea crossings in overcrowded and often inadequate boats. Last Saturday, seven boats carrying more than 1,500 African refugees from Libya including at least 130 women and 22 children, arrived on the island coast guard officials said. With detention facilities overflowing, frustration is growing on the tiny island, which has a population of fewer than 6,000 and survives on luxury tourism.

Vietnam has conducted live-ammunition exercises in the sea adjacent to the waters it disputes with China, which is thought to be rich in natural resources, and Hanoi has accused Beijing of harassing its oil exploration ships. The new decree is aimed at placating

nationalists who have been agitating against China's policy towards Vietnam, and also at China itself, whose increasingly assertive actions in the South China Sea are perceived to be hurting Vietnam's political and economic interests. The last time Vietnam fought a war was with China in 1979. The sabre-rattling this time has sent a clear message that Hanoi will not shy away from defending its "sovereignty and territorial integrity" by force.

Fujimori may be pardoned President-elect Ollanta Humala has said he would pardon former President Alberto Fujimori on humanitarian grounds if his health worsens. Mr Humala told reporters that "nobody should die in prison, except people serving life sentences for abusing children". Fujimori is serving a 25-year sentence for corruption and ordering killings by the security forces. During the closely-fought presidential run-off between Mr Humala and Alberto Fujimori's daughter, Keiko, critics accused her of standing so that she could grant her father a pardon if she won. MOSCOW

Lenin double ill after arrest A famous Lenin impersonator who poses for photos with tourists on Moscow's Red Square has fallen ill after being arrested, after police received complaints from vendors reportedly "aggrieved" by his appearance and foul language. When Sergei Solovyov, 53, was taken before a judge, he fell ill with high blood pressure and was rushed to hospital. Viktor Chepkasov, 55, told media he had been working alongside "Lenin" for years as his arch-enemy Nicholas II, Russia's last tsar, and accused the police of harassment.

Berlusconi accepts FACTORY Offer referendum blow This week only! Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Monday that the Italian people had made their opinion "clear" when they rejected his nuclear power plans and other policies in a popular referendum on Sunday. Mr Berlusconi had wanted to restart nuclear plants shut in the 1980s. Voters also repealed water privatisation and immunity from trial for government ministers. Turnout was about 57 per cent, a significant rise on participation in previous referendums, of whom 96 per cent had backed the referendum's four motions. Berlusconi supporters had

been urged to shun the poll. After a series of referendums over the past 16 years which failed because they did not achieve minimum turnout, the centre-left opposition campaigned hard to get voters to the polling stations. Responding to the result, Pierluigi Bersani, leader of the centre-left Democratic Party, called for the prime

minister to resign. It was, he said, "an extraordinary day", which had reinforced the poor performance of Mr Berlusconi's candidates at local elections last month. The question on immunity for government ministers was especially pertinent to Mr Berlusconi, who is currently facing four separate trials.

US guns fuel Mexico violence A US Congressional report has suggested some 70% of firearms recovered from Mexican crime scenes in 2009 and 2010 and submitted for tracing came from the US. The report, Halting US Firearms Trafficking to Mexico, by three Democratic Senators said Mexican drug cartels

have armed themselves with US military-style weapons and this has contributed to "Mexico's dangerous levels of violence". The senators have urged the US government to strengthen regulations to stem the flow of guns to Mexico. Their report came a day after

Mexican President Felipe Calderon accused the US arms industry of causing thousands of deaths in Mexico, based on the wish to make profits. Sr Calderon has repeatedly called for the US to implement stricter firearms laws.

Vaughan William’s The Lark Ascending was the most popular choice in the nationwide poll carried out by BBC Radio 4 to find out which were the top tracks the public would choose if they were stranded on the island. Elgar’s Enigma Variations came second, it was revealed on last weekend’s special edition of the show, hosted by Kirsty Young. Elgar appeared twice – his Cello Concerto was in sixth place. The Beatles were the most popular artists but the listener vote

was split between a number of songs, which meant the Fab Four did not feature in the top eight. Two rock acts did feature in the top eight – Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody was at No 4 and Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb made No 5. Elbow’s One Day Like This was the most popular contemporary song but did not make the final list. The listeners’ choice programme was held to celebrate the radio show’s 60th year. Most popular non-music choices included speeches by

Winston Churchill, Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas and the “leg over” cricket commentary when Brian Johnston collapsed into uncontrollable giggles as Jonathan Agnew described how Ian Botham had knocked over his stumps. Beethoven’s Ode to Joy came third, Handel’s The Messiah was sixth, and Holst’s The Planets came eighth. The top artists were: 1, The Beatles; 2, Bob Dylan; 3, Beethoven; 4, Mozart; 5, Pink Floyd; 6, Bach; 7, The Rolling Stones and 8, Elgar.

No plan to deal with undead in Leicester The population of Leicester may not be sleeping so easy in their beds at the news that the city council does not have any special plans to cope with a zombie invasion. Leicester City Council has been forced to admit that it has not thought it necessary to draw up specific contingency arrangements to deal with such an invasion after a “concerned citizen”, Robert Ainsley, made a request under the Freedom of Information Act, asking

what plans the council had in place to deal with a Resident Evil-type takeover. In a letter he said that having seen a number of movies about such invasions it was clear that the council’s preparation was poor and that he believed councils throughout the UK should prepare for such an event. The local authority has 20 days to respond formally but a spokeswoman admitted that there were

no specific plans. She did however reassure residents that the council’s general emergency plans could be adapted to cover an attack by the undead. Lynn Wyeth said:” We have had a few wacky ones before but this did make us laugh. To you it may seem frivolous and a waste of time but to different people it actually means something.” Zombies have been the horror du jour of many films, video games and TV shows in recent years.

Facebook pair found guilty A juror and a defendant were yesterday found guilty of contempt of court in the first case of its kind in the UK in Britain involving social networking sites and the internet. Juror Joanne Fraill, 40, was charged after chatting on Facebook to an acquitted defendant during a multimillion pound drugs trial which then had to be abandoned. The trial, in which Fraill (pictured left) sat on the jury, took place in Manchester last year and involved multiple charges and defendants. It was one of four connected trials and had run for ten weeks - the bill to the taxpayer was £6 million. Fraill, from Blackley, Manchester, had contacted one of the defendants, Ms Jamie Sewart, on Facebook after Sewart( right), from Bolton, had been acquitted but the jury on which Fraill was sitting was still

reaching verdicts on the other defendants. Fraill also admitted carrying out internet searches on the defendants. At the hearing in the High Court in London yesterday (Tue) before Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, Sewart denied asking Fraill for details of the jury’s deliberations but was found guilty. The two women will be sentenced at a later date and face up to two years in prison. One of the defendants, convicted drug dealer Gary Knox, is currently appealing against his conviction on the basis of alleged jury misconduct. Top judges have been concerned that the modern day phenomenon of social

networking may be putting at risk the tried and tested system of jury trials in the UK. Jurors are now discussing cases on social networking sites and on the internet despite being forbidden to discuss cases outside the courtroom. Some jurors have even held guilty or not guilty polls amongst friends. Judges have been ordered to give strict warnings to jurors about use of the internet at the start of trials but users continue to research cases on the internet outside the courtroom, and discuss confidential cases online. Lord Judge and the Attorney General Dominic Gieve have warned that this is a serious threat to the jury system.

Teachers plan strike over pensions row Teachers have voted to stage a national walk out at the end of June in protest over Government plans to change their pension rights. Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) will strike over plans that will mean teachers working longer, paying more and receiving less when they retire.

The action will take place on June 30th affecting millions of schoolchildren in England and Wales. The NUT ballot showed that 92 per cent of those who voted were in favour of industrial action - turnout was 40 per cent among state school union members and 27 per cent among private school members. It is the first time in the ATL’s 127 year history that

the union has voted for a national walkout. Thirty five per cent of members voted and of those 83 per cent voted in favour. Unison leader Dave Prentis on Monday issued a warning that over a million public sector workers were “on the road” to taking industrial action in the autumn, unless the Government drastically revised its pension changes.

Flamingos awash in water The presence of flamingos at the Fuente de Piedra lagoon north of Antequera is always a welcome sign for the weather watchers because it means there has been plenty of winter rainfall. this year. The director of the natural reserve, Manuela Rendon, said at least 10,000 breeding pairs had turned up this spring and that half of them already had chicks. He said it was difficult to arrive at an exact number of chicks, because they were still breaking out of the eggs. But whatever the number, he added, it was a heartlifting sight for nature lovers.

Science and Innovation minister Cristina Garmendia (pictured right) announced on Monday that Seville has been chosen to host the Lifewatch biodiversity research project which is expected to begin its work at the city's Pablo de Olavide University (UPO) in 2015. The minister stressed that the European Commission’s decision was not “just luck” but the result of a successful effort by the national and regional government to influence the decision. The project will have an initial investment of €220,000

about half of which will come from the Spanish government. Until now, the effects of climate change have been studied locally, in specific areas but the objective of Lifewatch, in which EU states are participating, is to coordinate research at international level. If

Europe looked to Spain and specifically Seville in Andalucia, it was in large part thanks to the Doñana wetlands, said former PM Felipe Gonzalez who currently presides over the Doñana National Park's board of advisers. Lifewatch will also have headquarters in Holland and Italy.

POST-ELECTION ROUND-UP

POST-ELECTION ROUND-UP Plans to save money Estepona mayor José María Garcia Urbano announced on Monday that he will not be drawing a salary or any payment for attending council meetings. He also intends to streamline the number of departments within the council. He had already said last week that none of the opposition party councillors would be required to work full time at the town hall and would only receive the payment made to part-time councillors for attending meetings. Since the handovers last Saturday, other new mayors have also been announcing how they intend to save money. Marbella mayor Angeles Muñoz (pictured) has announced plans to reduce the number of buildings occupied by council departments by four, among other cost-cutting measures, while Alhaurin de la Torre mayor Joaquín Villanova has announced that only four of the 11 councillors belonging to the governing party (PP) will be paid a full-time salary. The rest would only be paid the standard fee for attending meetings. Similar announcements from the remainder of the province's 101 town halls are expected over the next few days.

Record number of lady mayors The May 22nd local elections saw a record number of women elected for the top spot – 20 in all. Eight of the new lady mayors belong to the Socialist Party, six to Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left), five to the Partido Popular and one to the Partido Andalucista. The second largest municipality in the province is governed by Angelez Miñoz (PP), while women also head the council in two other big

towns – Maripaz Fernandez (PP) in Ronda and Esperanza Oña (PP) in Fuengirola. The other municipalities with lady mayors are Algarrobo, Árchez, Arenas, Atajate, Benadalid, El Burgo, Canillas de Aceituno, Cañete la Real, Carratraca, Casares, Cuevas de San Marcos, Humilladero, Jimera de Líbar, Manilva, Paraut, Teba and Villanueva de Tapia.

Separate elections The Socialist Party's organization secretary, Susana Diaz, said on Monday that regional

premier José Antonio Griñan will abide by his decision to let the Junta de Andalucia's current term finish in March next year, regardless of what the central government decides to do. She was referring to press rumours that prime minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is considering bringing the general election forward to November this year. If that happens, it will be the first time that the Andalucia regional election has been held on a different date to the general election since 1996. Sra Diaz said Sr Griñan refused to discuss the matter in public “out of respect for Sr. Zapatero”.

Unwanted horses slaughtered A local newspaper reports that around 1,000 horses have been sent to the only abattoir in Malaga province that deals in horse flesh since the beginning of this year. The manager of the Humidellero abattoir said their owners can no longer afford to feed them and get around €250 for a 200-kilo horse. He said some 70 horses, mainly from the provinces of Malaga, Granada and Cordoba, are slaughtered a week and the meat is sold to France, Italy and Germany. RONDA

New life for English cemetery

Dylan benefits from pamper session

The huge success of the cultural night Noche Blanca in May has inspired the English Cemetery to extend their guided tours to run through the summer as a way of raising much needed funds for the cemetery’s upkeep. Noche en Blanca is held each year but this was the first time the cemetery, the oldest Protestant cemetery on mainland Spain, had taken part, offering tours and a poetry recital and concert in St George’s Anglican Church, within the cemetery grounds. The response was overwhelming, with all 180 places on the tours reserved within three hours of being made available. On Saturday (June 18th) an evening tour will be held in English at 7pm, followed

by a tour in Spanish at 8pm. There will be fierce competition for places as only 30 are available on each tour and reservations must be made in advance. Anyone wanting to join the English language tour should reserve a place by email at info@cementarioinglesmala ga.org or telephone the cemetery gatehouse on 952 223 552 between 10.30 am and 2pm from Tuesday to Friday. Admission will be €5 per person, reduced to €4 for Friends of the English Cemetery on production of a membership card. The

tour will last around 45 minutes. Reservations for the Spanish language tours will be taken on 692 717 612 or on Facebook “Cementario Inglés de Málaga”. The English Cemetery in Malaga Foundation, the charity mainly responsible for its maintenance and administration, will now be organising the night-time tours on a monthly basis throughout the summer and to find out more visit the website www.cementerioinglesmala

ga.org or watch the local media. Customers and staff at the Arté Beauty Salon in Alhaurin El Grande are now sponsoring Dylan the dog, a long term resident at the SOS Animal Refuge. Salon owner Audrey Garret ( right of picture) with staff member Victoria, are seen holding their sponsor pack. The salon staff and its customers have raised nearly €180 euros through a raffle and pampering session to help pay for Dylan’s care at the refuge.

Bruce McIntyre, a key figure in the Foundation, said:” The success of last month has inspired us into offering the tours as a way of supplementing our income, which is mainly provided by public donations. The tours were astonishingly popular, and we have decided to organise more tours for those who may have been disappointed last month and for those who are new to us and who would like to find out more.”

Dylan is one of several dogs at SOS who would love to have a home but have been overlooked in the past and are now that bit older. The pack contains a certificate with Dylan’s picture and information about him, plus a welcome letter, a fridge magnet, bookmark and sticker and makes a gift with a difference. If you would like to find out more about sponsoring a dog please ring 605 227 155.

News Convent Garden Open Day Following the success of last year’s event, the first for many years, Sir Adrian and Lady Johns will host another Open Day in the Convent Garden on Saturday June 25th. Once again all proceeds will go to charity, this year the League of Hospital Friends and the Gibraltar Regiment Benevolent Fund. The garden will be open from 11am to 3pm. A booklet on the garden will be available and guides will be on hand to answer questions. Refreshments, plants and homemade Convent orange marmalade will be on sale and there will be information and displays on environmental themes. Members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band will provide music. Children will be well catered for, with activity packs available. King’s Chapel (adjoining the Convent) will also participate in the Open Day, hosting activities for children as well as being open for visitors. Sir Adrian said: “Suzie and I thoroughly enjoyed last year’s open day,

particularly seeing and talking to so many local families having a good day out. So we’re delighted to be able to open the garden again this year. We’re also pleased to be able to support these two local charities, with which we feel strong personal connections, Suzie as Patron of the League of Hospital Friends and, in my own case, as Commanderin-Chief of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.” Free advance tickets are available to Gibraltar residents until Friday June 24th. izarza is only a small town in the Guipuzcoa province of the Basque Country but events there last Saturday may be a harbinger of things to come. Governed for the past four years by the Partido Popular, it is now in the hands of Bildu, a coalition of Basque left wingers which the security forces insist is just another front for the terrorist group ETA.

I F

f there was collusion between the Socialists and the PNV, they will both regret it.

TA has been trying for years to get its foot into the institutional door – so to speak – in the hope that it can achieve its final goal of an independent Basque country via peaceful rather than violent means. It has presented itself in many guises, especially the Batasuna Party which was banned in 2003 because it refused to condemn violence as a political weapon, as stipulated in the Political Parties Law. The real reason behind the ban was probably the perception by the authorities in Madrid that Batasuna was the political wing of ETA – like Sinn Fein to the IRA.

or the handing over ceremony in Lizarza last Saturday, Bildu removed the Spanish flag that by law has to fly over all public buildings in Spain. In its stead, Bildu placed a placard demanding that all ETA prisoners should be housed in jails in the Basque Country, a longstanding ETA demand. (They’re currently scattered in jails around Spain to stop them from getting together and conspiring). Bildu also banned the press from the ceremony – something that has never happened anywhere in the country ever before. To top it all, a Bildu spokesman put it very clearly at a press conference last Friday – the coalition intends to have no truck with anyone who tries to thwart its ultimate goal of an independent Basque Country.

E

S

E

very time there are local elections, some party pops out of the woodwork in the Basque Country to be used as a front by Batasuna, only to have their wings clipped by the government through the Constitutional Court. Three months back, with the local elections just over the horizon, the Basque Left came up with Bildu, which – it was alleged – had nothing to do with Batasuna or ETA, even though several known Batasuna members were present at its launching.

T

he Partido Popular, among others, immediately challenged its constitutional right to exist but this time the court declared it was legal. This is where things get a bit murky. The Socialist government only managed to get this year’s budget through Parliament late last year because it had the backing of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV). Some day we may find out exactly what favours the PNV demanded in return but it looks as if one of them was the acceptance of Bildu’s legal right to field candidates in the May 22nd local elections. The PNV was aware that Bildu would probably take votes away from it – in fact, Bildu now rules in more than 100 municipalities in the Basque Country and Navarre – but insisted that it would be undemocratic to ban it.

I

t was a risky gambit but the PNV – which also wants independence for the Basque Country – opted to use Bildu to keep out the Socialists and the PP, who do not want an independent Basque Country. When Bildu was declared legal, the PP immediately accused the government of “influencing” the Constitutional Court judges. This was hotly denied, but the government needs all the friends it can get to make it to the general election next March, and at that time, the only friend the government had

o the cat’s among the pigeons and boy, are they squawking. Deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told a party rally on Sunday that Bildu could have been denied the institutional platform it now has if things had been done differently. Rubalcaba was confirmed on Monday as the Socialist Party’s candidate in the general election so it’s in his own interests to distance himself from this pandering to the PNV and Bildu, which the general Spanish public does not approve of, according to the polls. I suspect that Bildu will be stirring up an awful lot of trouble in the Basque Country over the next few months and the PNV and the government in Madrid deserve all the headaches they’re going to get.

M

eanwhile, the rumour is that Zapatero may be contemplating another drastic U-turn – this time by bringing forward the general election to November, after having solemnly vowed that he intended to sit it out till the end of his term. However, the party’s wise men are telling him to take advantage of the drop in unemployment which usually happens during the summer and autumn because of tourism and the different harvests that need a lot of hands. They’re hoping against hope that this could lead to a Socialist victory (best scenario) or at worst, a less humiliating defeat at the polls. These people obviously believe that pigs can fly.

here is good reason why some Socialists believe that calling early elections is a good idea. Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba’s peak in popularity over his expected rival Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party is overwhelming. In a recent Telecinco poll, Spaniards gave Rubalcaba a 65.1 per cent approval rating over Rajoy, who garnered 34.9 per cent. When the same television network asked viewers if they would like to see early elections, 66.56 per cent said yes opposed to 33.44 per cent who prefer to wait until next year.

T

he timing may be right but it could be disastrous for Spain’s international image. Dissolving parliament and holding an early race in November only sends cloudy signs to investors overseas. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero still has a host of legislation to get through Parliament before he bows out. Besides economic reforms, the government is due to present a bill that would change criminal trial procedures and order a hike in the minimum wage next year. We have already had too many upheavals recently, so we don’t need any more disturbances in the political spectrum; especially now that the euro-zone countries prepare to discuss a second bailout package for Greece .

T

he Socialists know that while they do have some sort of chance of staying in power with Rubalcaba they have to play the right cards and gambling on early elections isn’t one of them. Rubalcaba and his team still have a lot of work to do inside the party, including mending breaches caused by the rift from defence minister Carme Chacón’s last minute pull-out from the primary and the disastrous losses the Socialists suffered in the May 22nd polls. The deputy PM has to convince voters, including the Socialists, what he can offer in attractive economic terms. And the only way he can do that is by crafting a manifesto creatively distinct from the outgoing Socialist government – one that encourages investment and pledges to abide by European rules but relatively similar when it comes to offering Spaniards help when they need it. Rajoy doesn’t like talking about the welfare state; he told an economic forum held in Sitges recently that Spain would have the welfare state it could afford. Immediately US economist Joseph Stigliz, who won the Nobel Prize in 2001 and was also at that forum, warned that excessive cuts in public spending could lead to economic stagnation similar to that seen in Greece . There must be cuts in public spending, but not drastic slashes which leave a lot of people out in the cold.

R

ubalcaba needs time to prepare his party platform, and November is too early a deadline for him to accomplish it. On their part, members of

the Popular Party are also split over the early elections issue. While Rajoy and his number two, María Dolores de Cospedal, called for them soon after trouncing the Socialists at the May 22nd ballot box, they know that it would be a gamble. After so many months of critical rhetoric, the PP has failed to contribute one meaningful policy that could be seen as a glimmer of hope to get this economy on the right track. As with the Socialists, the PP also knows that five months is too short a time to prepare for a race. Publicly, they say they want the race, but privately they hope Zapatero’s government can stick it out until spring.

Bench blues

T

he institutional crisis occurring at the Constitutional Court is unprecedented. Three justices on Monday handed in their resignations, saying they are fed up with the political parties’ inept disagreements to appoint their successors. The deputy chief justice of the tribunal and one of the resigning justices, Eugeni Gay, said that the Socialists and PP have failed their constitutional mandate to renew the composition of the court. Never in the Constitutional Court ’s history have so many justices resigned at the same time. Chief Justice Pascual Sala ( pictured below) didn’t accept the resignations, explaining that if he did, it would only leave the court with eight members – the minimum number needed to make up a quorum. The snail-paced tribunal has been studying important challenges filed by the PP, including questions over the legality of the gay marriage and abortion laws.

e leak that led to huge changes One of America’s worst kept secrets was finally officially unveiled on Monday with the official release of the top secret study into the Vietnam War - The National Archive released all 7,000 pages of the inquiry on Monday. The publication of the secret history, known as the Pentagon Papers, came 40 years after the papers became a cause celebre and changed the way the media could report on the activities of Government officials. The papers were the subject of the most sensational leak in American history, after a whistleblower leaked parts of them to the New York Times, revealing to a shocked American public that the Government at the time had lied. It helped to end the war. The report had been

commissioned in 1967 by President Lyndon Johnson (pictured below left) at a time when much of the US had turned against the war, and it revealed that the Johnson administration had secretly escalated the conflict and lied to Congress.

apartment. Ellsberg tried to find a senator or other public figure to release the papers but could not find anyone willing to do it. In 1970 Ellsberg confided in the head of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) Marcus Raskin that he had a document which revealed that top officials had lied. Raskin later hoped that the papers would be treated as proof of war crimes, and made initial contact with the New York Times, and after contact with Ellsberg, on June 13th 1971 the Times began churning out its front page coverage of the shocking contents.

President Richard Nixon’s (pictured right with Daniel Ellsberg and Henry Kissinger in a spoof movie poster)attempts to block publication and to muzzle the press led to a landmark court hearing which handed the media more power to investigate public officials. The story behind the leak is the stuff of movie scripts. Just like today’s Wikileaks revelations the Pentagon Papers helped to reveal to the public just what was going on behind the scenes, and shone a spotlight on the falsehoods told and the atrocities committed. Large parts of the report were leaked to the New York

Times in 1971 by Daniel Ellsberg, who had worked on the secret study, officially called the McNamara Task Force on History of US Decision Making in Vietnam 1945-1968. Ellsberg had in the early 60s worked for the RAND Corporation, which had contracts with the

Pentagon and later worked in the US Embassy in South Vietnam. In 1969 Ellsberg and a friend, Anthony Russo, secretly stole the Pentagon Papers, photocopying volume after volume at Russo’s girlfriend’s

The leak caused a dramatic confrontation between the Times and the US Government. The administration stepped swiftly in and won an injunction against the newspaper to gag it from further publication. The action prompted the Washington Post to pick up the baton on June 18th until it too was silenced by a legal

gag. The Times, and anyone involved, was indicted for criminal activity. But the Supreme Court ruled on June 30th 1971 to lift the publication restraints. It said that the newspaper had a right under the US constitution to publish the leaked material, and the acclaimed series won a Pullitzer Prize. Daniel Ellsberg and his friend Anthony Russo also stood trial for conspiracy and theft under the espionage act and faced up to 115 years in jail - but the charges were dismissed in 1973. During Ellsberg’s trial it was revealed that Nixon operatives responsible for the Watergate scandal had also burgled him and his psychiatrist in an attempt to discredit him. The case has been covered by historians, leading to a notable account by David Rudenstine: “The Day The Presses Stopped: A History of The Pentagon Papers”.

Music Festival in the Mountains

Written by Pete Woodall

The now 'annual' Allioli music festival is this Saturday June 18th, nestled in the depths of rural Andalucía in the small town of Jimera de Libar. T

his one day event starting at 1.00 pm will play host to some fine music. Making sure things start off right with some real blues, the captivating sound of the Reverend Richard John; to get your toes tapping, hands clapping and certainly not to be missed the Stolen Gnomes. The Gnomes

perform their own blend of music, Celtic European Fusion with a nice touch of Motown from Chicago Jim. From shamrock to glamrock, Janey and the Joints band are very entertaining to say the least, newcomers Terraplane and finally the big favourite for many, Mel Williams with John Wild give a whirl through classic 50s and 60s rock. All in all an excellent programme of live entertainment played outdoors with food and refreshment readily to hand.

T

he stage has moved (again) from down by the river to the Plaza San Roque in front of the station near to The Allioli. This means anyone with access to the

Algeciras to Bobadilla railway line can catch the train, have a drink and arrive and leave in style. If you're going up from the coast turn inland at Manilva and go to Gaucin then on the N 369 to Jimera de Libar. It's about an hour and a half drive through some spectacular countryside. For more information visit www.barallioli.com or call Paul Darwent on 671 501 054. Anyone wishing to stay overnight or make a weekend of it will find accommodation and campsite information at www.secretandalucia.com

T

here is a lot going on around Jimera de Libar, excellent rural tourism with

places to see and enjoy, walking to and from, country trails to as far away as Gibraltar and Ronda cutting through parts of the Grazalema national park area, a sanctuary for wild life and people who like a bit of peace and quiet.

T

he Sierra de Grazalema, formed in 1984, was the first natural park in Andalucia and is rated as one of Spain's leading ecological zones. It has a rugged limestone topography dotted with spectacular cliffs and caves, Moorish architecture and even Roman ruins. It is also unusually wet, the very height of the hills and the wet south west winds band

#"

T

he park is closed for part of the year and special permits are needed for other areas mainly for fire risk and environmental reasons, information on this is readily available on the internet but for the Allioli music festival 2011 this isn't a problem at all.

together to create excessive rainfall which in turn plays host to an exceptionally wide collection of local flora (plants) and an increase in fauna (wildlife). The top of the food chain here being the many eagles and other birds of prey like the large black vultures. Grazalema is recognised as the wettest place in Spain

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Kung Fu Panda II

B

BY JENNIFER YUH NELSON Voices by Jack Black, Angelina Joliw, Gary Oldman

Plump Po, the dumpling-guzzling waiter in his father’s noodle bar, is back on the big screen. But this time he is no longer a green and clumsy kung-fu obsessed panda bear – after his exploits in the first film he is now a genuine action hero, an admired Dragon Warrior, but still struggling with his weight. The first movie was charming and frequently funny, and even though it was not in the Shrek league it was a big box office success, earning the studio a cool $600 million. So it

was inevitable that there would be another outing for Po, his once sceptical king fu teacher Mr Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) and his friends and allies The Five Furies (Angelina Jolie as Tigress, Seth Rogan as Mantis, Jackie Chan as Monkey, David Cross as Crane and Lucy Liu as Viper). Once again they have to join forces to face a mortal enemy and save their community. An

ambitious peacock Lord Shen (Oldman) aims to rule by using metal to create cannons so that kung fu fighters can easily be defeated. During this movie the penny finally drops for Po when his goose father Ping finally reveals that he was adopted as a baby. Now he is on a search to discover what happened to his parents, and to discover who he really is – and just what part

the evil Shen had to play in his life. Director Nelson is the first woman to helm a major Hollywood animated film and carries out the task with aplomb. The critics are united – this sequel tops the original. Black is on great form as Po, the script is clever, the fight scenes are spectacular, the story has poignancy and the animation is top class. It’s a summer sizzler for all the family.

ased on the short story “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King, “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of the most popular prison movies. The story is narrated by ‘Red’ who tells the tale of Andy, a young accountant wrongly convicted of murdering his wife. The movie follows the trials and tribulations of Andy Dufresne’s

true story, recounts the horrors experienced by Bacon, until he is driven to murdering a fellow inmate (with a spoon, no less), and is himself subsequently murdered by the guards. It is a harrowing and compelling tale.

prison life and how his patience and persistence alters the lives of his fellow inmates and then his own. His ingenious prison break and clever exposure of the corrupt prison governor leaves us with a sense of hope and the satisfaction of seeing justice well served.

On May 1st 1994 Ayrton Senna died on the 7th lap of the San Merino grand prix at Imola – he was 34 years old. Three days of national mourning were declared in Brazil and over a million people lined the streets of Sao Paulo for his funeral. The race in which he died had already claimed the life of Roland Ratzenberger during a qualifying round – watched by Senna from the stands. After Senna was taken to hospital medical staff discovered a small Austrian flag sewn inside his overalls. Had he won, Senna intended to dedicate the victory to Ratzenberger. Senna was charismatic, hugely aggressive and

focused behind the wheel. “I am not designed to come second or third. I am designed to win,” he once said. Three times World champion Niki Lauder called him the greatest driver ever. This documentary has been applauded by critics - to produce this epic and fascinating film the makers had access to the FI archive – thousands of tapes from every grand prix, including race footage, press conferences, pit action and drivers meetings. It took six years to make and the first cut was seven hours long –

the final version is a lean and action packed 90 minutes, which covers Senna’s rise to the top, his struggle to stay there and his death, and it focuses on the five years from 1989 to 1994 and his intense rivalry with four times World champion Alain Prost, who thought Senna was ruthless and dangerous. The two ended up as McLaren team mates who refused to speak to each other. The cause of Senna’s death defeated investigators, and remains a mystery. But Senna’s legacy continues. His sister

continued the work he started with his foundation set up to help educate the children of Brazil. The Insituto Ayrton Senna has educated 12 million youngsters and invested $80 million in education projects. And what of his fierce rival Prost? The two were reconciled shortly before Senna’s death, and Prost is now a trustee for the foundation. Senna was a man who inspired strong feelings and huge admiration and this documentary is a fitting tribute.

O

liver Stone’s adaptation of Quentin Tarantino’s screenplay “Natural Born Killers” was an insult to Tarantino’s writing and a visual abhorrence. The story tells of two star crossed lovers that embark on a “Bonnie & Clyde” type killing spree. The only decent scene is when Lewis and Harrleson are in prison and Lewis begins to headbutt the door. Though Stone’s execution is rather poor, the film is still worth a watch, as it is a good story, just badly told. Let’s hope Tarantino remakes it himself one day! Murder in the First” recounts the petty theft during the depression which lands Kevin Bacon a life sentence in Alcatraz. This film, based on a

opportunity to escape.

E

very high day and holiday TV always treats us to the most famous prison movie “The Great Escape”. I am sure this tale of World War II prisoners interred in a German prison camp needs no explanation. This is one of the prison break movies known to all, Steve McQueen’s character Captain Hilts spends much of his time in “the cooler” with his baseball and mitt. His eventual escape by motorbike is cinematic history, so famous are his bike stunts. In all, a very well acted dramatic film, crammed with A list actors.

C

ool Hand Luke” features the other blue eyed hunk, Paul Newman, famously trying to fight the system and eating a whole load of hard boiled eggs. This is one of Paul Newman’s most famous films, and unfortunately his prison escape is not a successful one, but did spawn one of the most famous lines in movie history: “What we have here, is a failure to communicate!”

This week’s lunar eclipse brings for many an emotional and volatile roller coaster of a time. With you being a fire sign it is important not to allow yourself to be drawn into the madness that is all around – you basically know what needs to be done and by listening to your instincts you will know when the right time to step in occurs to get the ball rolling. Personal finances will get a boost as there are opportunities to take advantage of deals coming your way. The time for reviewing and reflecting is over, enough going over what is broken, now is the time for materialising and manifesting. How you earn becomes a central focus along with contractual commitments including career and marriage. Whatever you have been refining and adjusting is ready for a real test drive in the world. Jupiter is giving you a boost that you have not had for 12 years, a new chapter and level of living is about to be unleashed. Having ideas and abilities is not always enough - you have realised that rock solid determination also needs to be developed in order to succeed. If you see things through all the way there is a promise of personal satisfaction and accomplishment. Inner insecurities may rise up to scare you out of moving on but if you face them and defeat them you will never have to deal with them again in your life. You are moving into an incredible and potent phase. There is a shy part of you that is screaming out to shine and be strong. The eclipse is enforcing some changes within that allow you to feel and believe that anything is possible and anything can happen. Be prepared for events to occur at great speed, with things literally coming at you from out of nowhere. You are in the midst of having increased sensitivity – this week is preparing you to fill the boots designed to fit your natural step. Impulsive or reckless words and actions are bubbling up to be released, this is a week of powerful emotional energy and you need to watch that you do not get into an ego battle with others, there are other means of finding answers and solutions. Instead rise up and be the voice of reason and leadership, let everyone else fight and shout but if you remain calm it will demonstrate that you have everyone’s best interests at heart. You are strongest by not playing the game this week. It is time to set some new ground rules, it is decision making time. No more tolerating a bad thing or keeping the peace. A strong new cycle is on its way that supports what you need, not one that just glosses on the surface. Saturn moves direct and this encourages you to take responsibility for your happiness and health. Let the world know you mean business and that you are not going to take the back seat and settle for second best. You are more than worth it.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

How did it get so hot so quickly? Here's something to nibble on while sitting around the pool cooling off or as two starters for a summer dinner with friends.

them out on large cutting board to cool. Using a large knife, finely chop the almonds. You could use pine nuts if you’re allergic to ordinary nuts.

2. Scoop 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture then press a grape into it. Cover the grape with the cheese and roll into a little ball with the grape inside, then wrap in clingfilm. Continue making the rest of the truffles.

4. Spread the almonds onto aplate. Finely chop the chives and combine with almonds. Then remove the clingfilm from the balls and roll each truffle ball in the almond and chive mix and coat evenly.

To achieve where you want to be you need to partner up or put your head together with another to solve a problem that has been getting in the way of progress. It is not the time to go solo and no-one expects you to either, collaboration is the key. You will be finding a new way to better relate to someone you care about or someone new may enter your life out of the blue September 23rd to help you on your journey. A new foundation is being laid - a long term October 22nd plan.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

This week is all about finding a balance between your working life and your personal life. Any conflict or challenges you face this week are there for a reason, possibly highlighting areas that need some sort of adjustment in your life. It seems that no matter how hard you try for something not to happen, it happens anyway. A few fated encounters are likely to come your way and your dreams could be vivid. Attention, care and focus go a long way.

SAGITTARIUS Your ruler Jupiter has exited Aries and moved into Taurus, things that seemed to blow hot air and had no substance have a chance of manifesting now, as long as there is a need, a longing, a wish then miracles can and do happen. There is an opportunity to enter a journey into the unknown – perhaps a break from burdens, worry and stress, just voice your needs and focus on your November 22nd December 21st dreams, for they are only around the next corner.

Cheesy stuffed mushrooms Ingredients: ● ½ kilo lean minced beef ● 1 kilo fresh mushrooms-stems

removed, chopped and reserved ● 60gr margarine ● 175gr chopped green bell peppers ● 2 teaspoons minced garlic ● 3 teaspoons dried parsley ● 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves, crushed ● 100gr dry bread crumbs ● 20gr soft bread crumbs ● 450gr shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

CAPRICORN You have reached a crossroads where the choices you make determine your future. The best thing you can do is to get your head out of the clouds, perhaps see your life from someone who is objective enough to see your actions and the knock on effect. It is important to ask yourself if you are doing what is best for you, waiting for another to take the lead, is not always the best route. You nd December 22 were born to take the initiative, perhaps someone is waiting for you to do just January 19th that.

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

Focusing on goals and objectives could be hard this week, that is because you are being given a break from heartache and worry. Your ruling planet is making a harmonious link to Venus which gives you a feeling of calmness and also complacency. You are being given a head start as your powers of observation and psychic awareness are second to none. This puts you ahead of the game – prepare in advance for what is to come later on. This week is all about communication, those that speak loud are not always right and those that whisper or keep quiet may well have a point to make, deciphering it all is your challenge. Many words will be spoken and it is up to you to sort out the real from the unreal. There is great hope in the air with opportunities lining up ready to be seized, make sure you take action so that you can experience the maximum potential of what they can deliver.

Directions 1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). 2.Place the minced beef in a large, deep frying pan. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside. 3.In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the margarine and stir in the mushroom stems, green bell peppers, garlic, parsley and basil.

4.In a large bowl, mix the minced beef, mushroom stem mixture, dry bread crumbs, soft bread crumbs and Cheddar cheese. 5.Place the mushroom caps, upside down, on a large baking tray. Generously stuff each cap with the mixture. 6.Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the filling is golden brown.

Celebs pick up a Posh bag She may be just four weeks away from giving birth to her longed-for daughter but the unstoppable style icon Victoria Beckham is not letting her eight month pregnancy slow her down. The former Posh Spice is working hard on her latest fashion collection which now includes accessories. Her deluxe handbags have been a huge hit with celebrities and cost in the region of a cool £2,000 so start saving now for

Christmas. Her new range of accessories last week won her the Accessory Designer of the Year award at the Glamour magazine Women of The Year bash. Sarah

Burton,

creative

director for Alexander McQueen, and designer of THAT royal wedding dress, was crowned Designer of the Year. Victoria’s designs have been a hit in the US and the UK and are now being cast

in TV commercials too. Actress Jennifer Lopez, famous for her shapely derriére, appears in an upcoming advert for L’Oreal’s Voluminous Million Lashes mascara, wearing an asymmetric corset dress designed by Mrs Beckham.

Kate gives seal of approval to face care product The Duchess of Cambridge has caused websites to crash as women rush off to buy whatever item of High Street fashion the former Kate Middleton is sporting – and now she might be set to do the same for a face cream. The 29-year-old lifted the lid on her beauty secrets when she was spotted on Saturday in the Kings Road branch of Boots. She has given the seal of approval to Nivea Visage Pure & Natural Moisturising Day Cream at just £5.10 a pot. Boots swiftly took the opportunity to release a

statement praising the Duchess for using their store for her skin care. The Duchess may be one of the world’s most watched women but this weekend revealed that like the rest of us, she has some old favourites that she is happy to bring out of the back of the wardrobe. She wore an old coat for the Duke of

Edinburgh’s 90th birthday church service at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle – she was last seen wearing the blue brocade coat at a friend’s wedding in 2009 and refreshed it by teaming it with this year’s on trend nude coloured shoes and a perky hat.

The battle to be Britain’s favourite cuisine is hotting up as lasagne and other Italian favourites are facing fierce competition from Spanish food in Britain’s supermarkets, Supermarkets are reporting a new food trend as paella, tapas and chorizo sausage has been outselling Italian foods like lasagne and prosciutto. Asda says that sales of chorizo, both in slices and sausages, are up 21 per cent on last year, with Parma ham up only eight per cent. Tesco has reported that Manchego cheese is growing each year by nine per cent while Parmesan has seen only a one per cent increase and at Marks and Spencer paella is now more popular than lasagne, as well as the good old British pie. Historically Spain has long been a favourite for holidaying Brits, but for years many visitors did everything they could to avoid a face to face meeting with Spanish cuisine – a spot of paella might have been just about OK but more challenging dishes, like

octopus, were usually given a wide berth and the common belief was that everything cooked in Spain swam in oil. And of course there were plenty of places to enjoy fish and chips or a full English breakfast or Sunday lunch while soaking up the sun. Now though it is easy to find tapas bars and Spanish restaurants scattered throughout the UK, Spanish chefs have become well known outside their own country, and tourists are more prepared to accept the challenge. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow starred in a TV series about food in Spain –all it needs is for Jamie Oliver to spread his wings and it will be olé all the way.

E. coli: friend or foe? E.coli is in the headlines for having caused the deaths of 29 people, most of them in Germany, but some scientists say the bacterium has given us the answer to life itself. Though the strain O104 is causing severe illness and deaths in the current outbreak, there are hundreds of types of E. coli which cause no problems. It was one of the first organisms to have its genetic code sequenced – increasing our knowledge of how DNA works and how humans function. Many of the genetic properties that govern E. coli hold true for ourselves. As a result, several forms of E. coli have been modified to work for the benefit of mankind and it is currently being replicated in tens of thousands of scientific institutes across the world. It is used as a microfactory: given the right

instructions, it can be modified to rapidly produce hundreds of genes or specific proteins. It is the ideal workhorse: it is easy to grow, can be modified easily and replicates rapidly. One of the first successes using the bacterium was the production of human insulin. In the 1970s, scientists inserted the genes responsible for coding human insulin into the bacteria and were able to produce vast quantities of the hormone to treat diabetes. Before this, diabetics had to rely solely on insulin isolated from sources such as horse urine and pigs' pancreases. With this discovery, the modern

biotechnology industry was born. E. coli has been used in the production of antibiotics, vaccines and many other therapies, and is used in the research and development stages of most drugs. Its ability to survive in many environments, to pick up bits of genetic code from other sources and to replicate rapidly also lends

A survey of more than 1,000 people by the Dental Health Foundation found that more than four in every five people re-use their old toothbrushes for another purpose. Four in ten use them for scrubbing bathroom tiles, and almost a third use them to clean kitchen appliances. More than a quarter use them to clean jewellery, and roughly one in every five use them for shining shoes. The owner’s age is also a factor.

Over 75s are three times more likely to re-use their toothbrush than those between 16 and 34 and twice more likely than those between 35 and 44. Women are a third more likely to reuse their toothbrush than men. Some men used them to clean the dog’s teeth or give the golf clubs a sharp polish. A spokesman for the British Dental Health Foundation said people should get through four toothbrushes a year. !

it a more sinister side. It is probably the most studied organism on our planet, to the extent that some scientists say we know more about it than we know about ourselves. Arthur Webster I really cannot let Alan Grieve's May 25th letter go without comment. How on earth does saying that my email spam has fallen since CANCELLING my Facebook account lambast Facebook? My comment was a simple

Alan H Gibson With reference to your Opinions column in issue 126, may I relate how helpful the Polling Station was when I went to cast my vote. The National Policeman on duty cleared the way through the departing voters to allow my electric wheelchair access and no sooner had I stopped inside the school hall than a Spanish lady was at my side to help me dismount and to guide me to the appropriate table to register. I had taken my certificates of Empadronamiento and

Coin statement of fact, and my spam receipt level is still only 5 or 6 emails a day. Maybe Mr Grieve failed to read that I have cancelled my Facebook account. Mr Grieve is naïve in the extreme if he believes that you only receive spam that you agree to accept. After a few

weeks of a consistently low spam receipt rate, I believe that I am now justified in concluding that much spam is sent out to email addresses harvested from Facebook since there has been no other significant change in my online presence.

Benalmadena Costa Residencia, but something with a photo would be better if possible. From fondness for it (my residencia card has one of my best passport photos on it) I still carry the card though it is now well out of date, and when I offered it as evidence of identity pointing out that it was pretty ancient, there were smiles all round with “No problema” being said. The same lady escorted me to the table where the voting slips lay, and waited at a distance while I made my choice, then escorted me back to the ‘letterbox’. If I’d

had a crown on my head I could not have been treated more courteously. No wonder I’m so content living in the Municipality of Benalmádena. Editor replies: Sounds like you were very lucky indeed. My own experience was much the same as the previous letter and I found them very unhelpful - maybe we should all move to Benalmádena or Mijas where they have excellent facilities for foreigners and always seem to go out of their way to help!

Lunar eclipse tonight! Make sure that you have a clear view of the South East horizon tonight (June 15th) to witness one of the most spectacular celestial events, a total eclipse of the Moon.

A

n eclipse of the Moon occurs when the full Moon passes through the shadow cast into space by the Earth blocking out the sunlight that usually lights up the Moon. An eclipse of the Sun is the opposite, this is when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blocks its light falling on Earth.

U

nlike an eclipse of the Sun, lunar eclipses are quite safe to look at and can be seen by anyone living on the night time side of the Earth who can see the Moon. You can even use binoculars and telescopes to see it more clearly. Unfortunately this eclipse doesn’t quite favour southern Spain as the eclipse will already be well underway by the time the Moon rises at about 21.40 tonight, in fact because the Moon will be fully eclipsed when it rises in the dusk sky it may be quite difficult to see at first but not to worry, you will still have plenty of time to see the rest of it.

T

he eclipse begins whilst the Moon is still below the horizon but because the Earth’s shadow is so much bigger than the Moon it can take several hours for the Moon to pass right through the whole eclipse. The maximum eclipse will occur at 22.00 and will last until 23.00 when the bottom left hand corner of the Moon will gradually reappear from the shadow. Then for the next hour until midnight more and more of the Moon will be revealed.

D

uring a lunar eclipse the Moon does not go completely black but instead takes on a deep red colour. The colour is caused by the sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere. If you were standing on the Moon at the time of an eclipse then the Earth would appear as a black disc in front of the Sun with a bright red ring surrounding it. The colour of the Moon can vary widely between different eclipses depending on the Earth’s atmosphere at the time and it will be very interesting to see what effects the recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland and New Zealand will have on the colour this time.

T

he other thing that may have an effect on the Moon’s colour during this eclipse is that this full Moon just happens to be the lowest full Moon of the year. June 21st is the summer solstice i.e. the longest day, when the Sun is at its highest in the northern sky. So because the Sun is at its highest point in the sky on that day then the Moon is opposite and therefore must be at its lowest point in the sky on that night, the odd week between the two dates will have only a negligible effect. It is a well known fact that the full Moon appears larger when viewed closer to the horizon than when seen higher in the sky. Nobody is quite sure why this happens but it does, so with the whole of the eclipse occurring while the Moon is so close to the horizon could make it look very strange indeed!

E

clipses of the Moon occur a lot more often than you would think, in fact there will be another one later in the year, and it’s simply that your bit of the Earth has to be facing the Moon when they occur for you to see it.

I

f you would like to join members of the Fuengirola Astronomy society to watch the eclipse then take a deck chair and make your way down to Punta Negra beach front near the Sunset Beach Hotel in Benelmadena and sit back to enjoy an evening of the solar system in action, take your camera and tripod to try your hand at a bit of Astro-Photography, you’ll have plenty of time to get a nice picture! Subaru smashes TT circuit record The long-standing road-car lap record for the Isle of Man TT circuit has been comprehensively smashed in a production-spec Subaru WRX STI saloon. In his very first run around the challenging 37.8-mile course former British Rally champion Mark Higgins posted a blistering lap time of 19 minutes and 56.7 seconds, translating to an average speed of 113mph. The peak speed achieved during the lap was 162mph.

Button’s last gasp win at a rain affected Canadian GP

point, and overtook Sebastian Vettel for the victory on the final lap of the race. The reigning world champion finished second despite having led the race for almost the entire grand prix. He went too deep into a corner on the final lap and ended up on the still wet part of the track, conceding the lead to Button. Mark Webber finished in third place, depriving Michael

Schumacher of the first podium finish of his comeback. The seven-time world champion had to settle for fourth. Vitaly Petrov, Felipe Massa, Kamui Kobayashi, Jaime Alguersuari, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastien Buemi picked up the rest of the points. The rain was relentless

falling all morning in Montreal stopping about half an hour before the race began, but the track was still very damp, and extreme wet tyres were the order of the day. The race started controversially behind the safety car, depriving fans of a first-corner battle between the main protagonists, even though the track did not look too wet. In that first stint of racing Lewis Hamilton again showed his reckless side sending Webber into a spin at turn 1 and then almost taking out eventual race winner and team mate Button on lap 8 after Button came out of the final corner out of shape and Hamilton went for the inside just as Button himself moved over. The red flag was thrown on lap 25 just after Vettel had radioed to his team that

conditions were too bad to allow the race to continue. There was then a two hour delay to allow the rain to stop and the track to drain before things finally got under way again. There were 10 more laps behind the safety car and then it all went the way of Jenson Button with some incredible overtaking moves with the help of DRS, both Button and Webber improved dramatically. The speed of Button seemed incredible even to the two former F1 drivers and TV pundits Martin Brundle and David Coulthard. There was one tense moment when Button and Alonso touched on lap 38, beaching the Ferrari on the kerb of turn 3.There was to be no punishment for Button though, and he went on to hound Vettel to the finish and the all important error that allowed him to get past and take a much deserved victory. Report by Mike Kerrigan

Stoner wins at a slippery Silverstone to claim the British MotoGP Casey Stoner took his fourth victory of the season at a cold and wet Silverstone, in a race that saw Jorge Lorenzo crash out of the title lead and veteran Colin Edwards claim a podium just nine days after breaking his collarbone! Fastest in every track session - in both wet and dry conditions - Stoner lost out to Lorenzo and Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso at the start, but both he and Dovizioso retook the Yamaha rider within a few corners. After sizing up the track for a few laps to test the conditions, Stoner grabbed the lead from Dovizioso on lap 2 of 20, then began pulling away despite poor visibility due to the spray; Lorenzo meanwhile was stuck behind Dovizioso. Lorenzo couldn't contain the urge to try and better his position and on lap 9 of 20,

the world champion highsided off at the fast first turn, marking his first DNF since Australia 2009. The accident came just moments after team-mate Ben Spies had crashed out of sixth and promoted Marco Simoncelli to third and a potential first MotoGP podium. Sadly for the allaction San Carlo

collarbone - and one day after Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Cal Crutchlow suffered the same injury. Edwards and Nicky Hayden had been the fastest riders on track in the closing stages, before Hayden backed off to confirm a repeat of his 2010 British GP

Silverstone race ended in a forgettable sixth place, while rookie Karel Abraham turned a MotoGP-best sixth on the grid into seventh at the flag.

Debris showers nearby photographers and marshals, while wheels bounced around them- driver McNish walked away unaided

Audi make it 10 from 12 at Le Mans 24 hr Audi won the Le Mans 24 Hour race on Sunday despite the loss of two of their three cars to highspeed crashes. Two-time winner Allan McNish and team-mate Mike Rockenfeller crashed in separate incidents on Saturday. But Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer still clinched a 10th Le Mans title for the German car maker. They completed 355 laps to beat the Peugeot number nine of Simon Pagenaud, Pedro Lamy and Sebastien Bourdais by 13.854 seconds. The previous day McNish and Rockenfeller had both walked away unharmed

after crashing into barriers in spectacular fashion. Scotsman McNish crashed after his car clipped the front of Anthony Beltoise's Ferrari and went slewing across the track. He stepped out of the wreckage unaided but was taken for precautionary medical checks. McNish had enjoyed a superb start from fifth on the grid to be running second. But shortly before the hour mark he clipped the number 58 GTE Pro Ferrari of Beltoise while attempting to lap the back marker and spun out of control.

Young lions must improve to progress further England remain in the running for the Under-21 European Championship after a match in which they were largely outplayed, outclassed and left chasing shadows for long periods of the game - Spain U21 1-1 England U21 Stuart Pearce demanded his players become quick learners after Danny Welbeck pulled England Under 21s back from the brink in Denmark. Although Spain dominated the match, England may be entitled to feel their opponents did not deserve to win as their goal should not have stood; the midfielder Ander ‘God’ Herrera punched the ball

home from close range. Even when cheating the Spaniards were artful since Pearce and most of the England players admitted that they, like the referee, were duped into believing Herrera had finished with his head. "I had no idea he'd done that," Pearce said. "It's disappointing to hear." Welbeck levelled against

the run of play in the 88th minute to throw England a lifeline, and head coach Pearce hopes the experience has taught them a valuable lesson. Pearce said: “We perhaps needed a touch more arrogance when we were on the ball. We’ll learn a lesson from that. We know we will get better. If we had kept the ball away

A number of rugby clubs from the province of Malaga, including Axarquia Rugby, Malaga, Benalmadena and Marbella amongst others, last week took part in the 1st annual “Playa Rugby” tournament on the beach at Rincon de La Victoria. Featuring the seniors, women s teams and the U17s Colts teams, each club entered a number of 5-a-side teams to compete for the title in 12 minute matches of fast, quick ball handling and exhilarating rugby. A large crowd of locals, tourists and rugby fans watched the tournament, many bewildered by the

laws of the game and the ferocity of the tackling and rucking! The Red Cross were on hand in case of any injury, but everything went smoothly without incident. Played, as always, with great sportsmanship, the 20 teams enjoyed 6 hours

of continuous rugby and it was an evening of fun and sport. This is an event which is to be continued every year from now on. For more information on joining Axarquia Rugby Club, please ring Michael on 669 899 064 or 952 514 898 . Training for Axarquia Rugby Club is held at the Fernando Hierro Stadium in Velez-Malaga every Tuesday and Thursday from 19.00 for the juniors and 20.30 for the seniors (all age groups welcome). from the Spanish team for that period of time over 90 minutes, we'd have maybe won the game 4-0,” he said. “We stuck at it, we kept going, and sometimes you get rewards. I don't think our goal was threatened a great deal over the 90 minutes. The goalkeeper's hardly had too much to deal with.” Danny Welbeck spares England U-21’s blushes with 2 mins to go

Combined Colleges win first of deciders With the Southern Spanish Cricket League thrown into confusion by the demise of Malaga CC the race for the title now comes down to best-of-three championship deciders to be played on alternate Sundays from June 12th. Match won by Combined Colleges CC by 26 runs In this first leg Fuengirola’s tight early bowling was maintained throughout the innings, keeping Combined Colleges to a below-par score of 158. Azard (32) and Previn put on a partnership of 62 in 15 overs before Azard sent a catch straight to Hassan at mid off. Three overs later Previn sent a hard catch straight back to bowler Tanveer and then the wickets began to tumble. In just 18 deliveries 94 for 3 became 96 for 6 before Brian and Kasun steadied the boat a little. Combined Colleges ended their innings with one ball remaining on 158 all out. Previn top scored with 46. Tanveer’s 7 overs, 3 wickets for 18 was a magnificent spell for Fuengirola. After the interval Fuengirola, needing almost exactly 4 ½ runs per over found it no easier to score runs than Combined Colleges had before them but did find themselves consistently behind the asking rate. The opening pair of Shaid Mahmood and Afzal shared a stand of 26 in 7 overs before Shaid tickled one round the corner where veteran Fernando had used the experience of his years to place himself in exactly the right spot to take the catch. After this partnerships were notable by their absence until the end of the innings. After 10 overs Fuengirola were 3 down for 31 and in a bit of trouble.

What don’t you need when your backs are to the wall? A silly run out of course. Hassan and Sham had stopped the rot by staying together for 7 overs and 19 runs when they ended up both stranded in the middle of the pitch. The problem for Combined Colleges was whether to throw the ball to the bowler’s end, throw it to the striker’s end or to discuss the matter over the proverbial cup of tea before deciding. In the end it was Hassan who trudged back to the pavilion. Two overs and one wicket later the question was - what don’t you need when your backs are even closer to the wall. Another silly run out of course. This time it was Asad who took a despairing glance at the

umpire, knowing the finger had to go up. And that was almost it. After 26 overs Fuengirola were 87 for 9 with no chance of victory. However, nobody seemed to have told Tanveer and Shahid. The last wicket pair just kept on hitting the ball and with three overs left needed an improbable but not impossible 11 runs per over. They had taken the mood from disbelief in the possibility of victory through nagging doubt and into the faintest glimmer of hope before Tanveer fell, bowled, attempting another mighty blow. Tanveer top scored with 28. Man of the match went to Tanveer for his excellent bowling and late order against-the-odds batting. Report by Ray Fry

“I was literally on my deathbed,” said Serena Williams, the defending Wimbledon champion, as she opened up on Monday about the medical misfortunes that had afflicted her over the past. In March, she was diagnosed with pulmonary blood clots – a condition that did not just endanger her career, but could have been genuinely lifethreatening if her physio had not insisted that she go to hospital for a check-up. “They [the doctors] said I had several clots in both lungs,” Williams told a press conference on Monday.
