Spring turned into summer on Tuesday with a heatwave across the country. Despite what had seemed to be an unseasonally cold and wet spring, the Meteorological Office said it had in fact been the warmest since 1951, and rainfall had only been 10% above average. However, temperatures registered in the past week or so have been the highest on record for this time of the year, aided in Malaga by the terral wind

sweeping in from North Africa, which raised the temperature to 37º. And there's more to come. This mini-heat wave will be succeeded by another next week, with temperatures hitting 40º across Andalucia. The only consolation, according to the weathermen, is that although we're in for another hot summer, it won't be as hot as last year. And for those who can

ICKHAM’S

WORLD A bit of a trial

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I told you last week that our Sue had been fitted with a stent and was at home recovering but she ended up back in hospital with complications later that week and spent All nIGHT sitting in A&E waiting for doctors to turn up and a battery of tests to be carried out and her husband stayed all night with her, sitting in a chair and we all now how flippin' uncomfortable that can be. She wasn't moved to a ward until the following day. You hear about people being on gurneys in the corridors of hospitals in the uK but the same thing appears to happen all over the world so, if you have to go in as an emergency, I would at least pack my pillow, teddy and a “blanky” to be as comfortable as possible! She was sent home on Monday so we’re looking forward to her wit and wisdom returning to us soon! We have taken to sitting in our offices with the doors closed, the roller shutters down and the lights on to keep out the heat. Only one of oour offices, the production department, has aircon and they're loving it – maybe they won't be so keen when we all move our desks up there! When in the uK I used to play golf now and again and, after driving the buggy while my husband played whilst on holiday I thought I might have another go so I had a lesson on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it at lauro Golf. The professional may have even sorted out my swing!

Top banker faces tax inquiry

Stolen babies exhumations continue all over Spain

The High Court announced last Thursday that the country's most influential banker, Banco Santander chairman Emilio Botín, and 11 members of his family are to be investigated for tax fraud and submitting false documents in relation to accounts they hold in HSBC's Swiss private banking division. French tax authorities had alerted the Spanish government last year that Sr Botín, his daughter Ana Patricia Botín - the head of Santander's British banking unit - his brother Jaime and five of his children were among the names of 659 Spanish residents who hold secret Swiss accounts at HSBC totalling €6 billion. The High Court said the Botín family had not declared the money on the returns from 2005-2009,. Jesús Remón, a lawyer for

the Botín family, said the Botíns expected the court to resolve the case “quickly and satisfactorily” because “the family has voluntarily and completely normalized its tax situation and is compliant with all its tax obligations.” An inside source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the family had paid about €200 million in back taxes over the last year. The Efe news agency, quoting sources close to the family, has reported that the money deposited in the Swiss

account belonged to Sr Botín's father, Emilio Botín Sanz de Sautuola y López, who opened it in 1936 after fleeing Spain at the start of the Civil War. Sr Botín has been a dominant figure on the Spanish corporate scene for 25 years. He has transformed his bank into one of Europe’s largest, with significant investments in Brazil, Britain and the United States, where Santander owns Sovereign Bank. Recent acquisitions have expanded Santander’s presence in markets like

Mexico, Germany and Poland. Sr Botín is not the first prominent corporate leader to be a target of Spanish antifraud prosecutors. Two years ago, César Alierta, the chairman of Telefónica, was cleared after a lengthy investigation into accusations of insider trading. A court rejected the charges because it judged that too much time had elapsed between the suspected crime and the start of court proceedings.

Franco’s family deny talks The family of Francisco Franco have denied having contacts with the government about transferring the dictator's remains from his mausoleum in the Valley of the Fallen to the cemetery at the El Pardo Palace, where his wife Carmen Polo is buried. Early last week, Presidency minister Ramon Jauregui had said the commission set up to

study the future role of the monument had recommended moving the dictator's remains and that there had been “extraofficial” talks with the family about this. Ironically, it was the government which decided to bury Franco at the Valley of the Fallen. His family had wanted him to buried in the cemetery at the El Pardo Palace cemetery,

The next exhumations in the so-called stolen babies case are scheduled to place in Estepona, after two exhumations last week in La Linea produced bones that “were too large to belong to a newborn baby”, according to medical reports. A court in La Linea together with the Campo de Gibraltar Prosecutor's Office is compiling reports on doctors, policemen, relatives and others who may be able to provide information about the cases reported so far. The National Association of People affected by Irregular Adoptions (Anadir) continues to present cases of possible stolen babies in Cadiz, Malaga and Sevilla provinces. According to the Stolen Babies Platform, which is working with Anadir and the Historical Memory Association, the real identity of a million Spaniards may have been falsified by doctors and others who systematically stole newborn babies over a period of 50 years to sell them to childless couples. The babies' parents were told they were born dead or had died shortly after birth. Several exhumations in the past have shown that their coffins were full of stones or contained babies that could not be matched genetically to the bereaved parents.

National News Early election ruled out In response to rumours that the general election will be brought forward to November this year, the Socialist Party's organisation secretary Marcelino Iglesias told reporters on Monday "All I have to say is that the government intends on holding general elections when they are scheduled, in the spring of 2012." Speaking after the weekly meeting of the party's permanent committee, Iglesias assured reporters that even without the support of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV)

and Catalan CiU party for the 2012 budget, "the parliamentary session can still continue" through spring. The only top Socialist to call for an early election has been Castilla-La Mancha's outgoing regional premier José María Barreda, who said during a TV interview that “maybe the move could be for the best”. And newspapers reports indicate that political parties in both the Basque Country and Catalonia are gearing up for a November election.

Deadline for naming new judges Speaker José Bono (pictured) has given the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular until the end of June to appoint new judges to the Constitutional Court. Several judges should have been replaced up to three years ago but the government has refused to accept a judge nominated by the PP and the PP have refused to withdraw the nomination. Three judges, two known progressive (Socialist) ones and a

conservative, resigned on Monday in an attempt to break the impasse but the Court's president refused to

accept their resignations. Now both parties are saying they will meet the June 30th deadline.

Peaceful protest movement recovers from violence Tens of thousands of people marching from six different parts of Madrid on Sunday to converge on Neptune Square, near Parliament, managed to dim the violent images that had marred their peaceful Real Democracy Now movement, which most Spaniards had sympathised with since May 15th, when it first occupied the capital's central Puerta del Sol Square. The previous Wednesday, more than 3,000 protesters from the Barcelona branch of the movement tried to blockade the first session of the Catalan parliament since the May 22nd regional elections. Catalan premier Artur Mas and several MPs arrived by police helicopter to avoid the crowds who were blocking the gates of the park in which the Parliament is located. MPs who walked in were jostled and heckled or had paint thrown at them. One blind MP was almost separated from his guide dog four times

before he reached the safety of the park. Inside Parliament, a key budget debate got under way after a delay, with only half the MPs present. Most of the protesters belonged to the Real Democracy Now youth movement – also known as "los indignados" (the outraged ones) or M-15 (the day the movement was formed) – which has staged rallies and sit-ins across Spain in recent weeks to protest the government's austerity measures. Catalan regional interior chief Felip Puig

told a press conference on Thursday that there were "professional" protesters among the crowd, whom he called "urban guerrillas with ferocious enthusiasm for a pitched battle." He said the 600 Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police force) stationed outside the parliament building had successfully protected a four-kilometre perimeter but admitted there had been "insufficiencies" in the number of police deployed to protect MPs on their way to the budget debate. He said Mossos had not acted with more force against violent elements in the crowd to

avoid "a worse situation." The violence was on the other foot in Valencia the following day when police charged protesters who were simply waving red cards against corruption as regional premier Francisco Camps, a suspect in the Gürtel kickbacks-for-contracts scandal, arrived for his investiture. The Madrid branch of the movement said it had not authorized the violence in Barcelona and in a statement condemned "all acts of violence and pressure outside the law, human

rights and democracy." The Barcelona wing of the movement also condemned the "minority acts of violence" and pointed out that many protesters had intervened to prevent an escalation of the unrest. So it was amid fears of more violent incidents that thousands of people converged on Parliament on Sunday, chanting slogans such as "We're not paying for your crisis" and "They call it democracy but it's not." The peaceful demonstration restored faith in the spirit of the

grassroots movement that began as a protest against political mismanagement of the economic crisis and developed into prolonged sit-ins in squares across the country, most notably in Madrid and Barcelona. The camps have since been dismantled but to keep the spirit of their movement alive marches like the one that set out from Valencia for Madrid on Monday are being planned in other cities across the country. But it remains to be seen if the movement will survive what promises to be a long, hot summer.

According to the Economist magazine, Spain will soon be a country for old men MADRID because the man who wins the next general election will be a grey-bearded veteran, Two million go hungry every day breaking a 35-year-stretch of new prime ministers being in their early forties. Mariano Rajoy, 56, is expected to beat the Socialist candidate, current deputy PM Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, 60, even though he is an “image consultant’s nightmare” and “dull”. According to the magazine, Sr Rajoy looks like what he was before entering politics – a provincial land registrar. Despite the fact that Sr Rajoy is a “mystery” for most Spaniards, the magazine said victory will go to him because “the election will be lost, not won”, as voters turn on their Socialist prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who allowed the booming economy he

inherited to crash. Having shed the “nasty party” image that damaged the Partido Popular in 2008, Sr Rajoy is playing a game of watch and wait, being careful not to frighten voters with dramatic, drastic proposals. Some people in the party wish he were more dynamic while others say he will be a better prime minister than opposition leader. But many, according to the Economist, believe he wants to avoid making the same mistake as David Cameron, who – they claim – scared voters by being too open about austerity, thus failing to win an absolute majority.

Some 5 per cent of Spaniards - about 2.3 million - go hungry every day, according to a survey by Intermon Oxfam in Spain. About a third said they were eating less for economic reasons while a fifth said it was for health reasons. The survey also revealed that 70 per cent were concerned about rising food prices. Similar surveys in rich countries like the US, the UK and Australia show that 6 per cent go hungry every day there. MADRID

Police get 'super helicopter' The National Police have acquired a Eurocopter EC-225 transport helicopter, one of the few in Spain, that can carry 20 Special Operations (GEO) agents and all their gear to any point in the country. It has a maximum speed of 290 kilometres per hour and an operation range of 850 kilometres. It is based in Madrid but is available to special operations groups operating elsewhere in Spain. Its first mission was take rescue teams to Lorca in Murcia after the earthquake there. Mariano Rajoy

Motorbike safety targeted Traffic police will be paying special attention to motorcyclists until next Sunday, as the traffic authority tries to halt the

growing number killed on the road. Since January, 100 motorcyclists have died – 18 more than the same period last year. This threatens to

reverse the figures that show a drop of 43 per cent in motorcyclist deaths since 2007. Traffic police will be on the lookout for speeding

and reckless driving, such as weaving in and out of traffic, as well as for motorcyclists not wearing their helmets.

Passers-by and storekeepers in the Avenida Constitucion in the capital's Mostoles district called in the police last week after they saw a man walking a girl on her knees on a dog leash. It turned out that the couple were participating in a performance art event at the local 2 de Mayo modern art centre. The police accepted the explanation but told the couple to stay inside the centre, fearing a riot if they appeared on the street again.

Prison stand-off continues

President Bashar al-Assad announced a general amnesty for all crimes committed before June 20th, apparently in response to a warning of further sanctions against his country made at an EU meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday. They said the sanctions would be aimed at achieving "a fundamental change of policy by the Syrian leadership without delay". Meanwhile, the US said it wanted to see "action, not words" on the reforms pledged by Mr Assad. The EU meeting had coincided with a televised speech by Mr Assad in which he blamed

anti-government protests on a small group of "saboteurs". In his third address to the nation since protests began in March, he said Syria should deal with people's demands for reform but that a "small faction" was exploiting popular grievances. Local co-ordinators for the protesters said reforms were no longer their

demand, the only solution was a change of regime. Other opposition activists said Mr Assad's speech was addressed to his loyalists – not to his opponents. Protesters complained that there was no announcement on ending the violence, nor was there any mention of holding the security services accountable for the

crackdown. Rights groups have said at least 1,300 civilians have been killed in demonstrations since March, and more than 300 soldiers and police. Mr Assad also urged thousands of people who had fled into Turkey to return to their homes "as soon as possible", saying “the state will protect them".

Wal-Mart women's Plane crash kills 44 case dismissed The US Supreme Court has dismissed the largest class action lawsuit in history, ruling against women alleging discrimination by US giant Wal-Mart. The court ruling overturned a judgement by a lower appeals court that 1.5 million women who had worked at Wal-Mart retail stores could unite in the class action suit. The court accepted Wal-Mart's argument that the women work in diverse jobs in stores across the US and do have not enough in common for a class action, ruling they must pursue action individually. The

women, led by a group of named plaintiffs, sought back pay and punitive damages saying the company passed female employees over for promotion and paid them less. Their legal action relied on statistical evidence of pay discrimination and reports of individual cases of discrimination. The plaintiffs can still pursue their claims individually, but implications for WalMart would be much less significant than a suit that could have cost the company billions of dollars.

Forty-four people were killed and eight injured when a RusAir Tupolev 134 plane attempting to land on a motorway crashed and caught fire about 1 km from Petrozavodsk airport in Karelia in north-western Russia on Monday. Rescuers managed to pull several people out of the plane before it exploded. The emergencies ministry has published a full list of the passengers and the names of the survivors. One Dutch and one Swedish national, two Ukrainians and a Russian family of four with dual US citizenship were all among the dead. The survivors included a 10-year-old boy, a 14-year-

old girl believed to be his sister and a female flight attendant. All are said to be in critical condition and suffering from burns. Most have been sent to Moscow for further treatment. Thick fog and heavy rain were reported at the time of the crash. Prosecutors say an investigation into possible violations of air transport rules is under way. RusAir is a private Moscow-based airline that specialises in charter flights in western Russia and eastern Europe. Karelia is a sparsely populated region of lakes and forests bordering Finland, and a popular summer destination for Russian tourists.

The Venezuelan authorities transferred 2,500 prisoners from a jail near Caracas on Sunday in an effort to reassert control there. Soldiers took over most of El Rodeo jail in Guatire on Friday, after a riot between rival gangs of prisoners earlier in the week

left about 20 people dead. Some 50 prisoners in one prison wing were refusing to disarm and the interior minister said the remaining 1,000 prisoners would be moved on Tuesday while the authorities continue to negotiate with them.

The Maariv newspaper had reported that a dog, evading all efforts to eject it from the court, had reminded a judge of a curse passed on a now deceased lawyer 20 years ago, when judges bid his spirit to enter the body of a dog. A court spokesman said a dog had entered the building but been removed immediately. The newspaper has apologised for any offence caused. INDIA

Chile volcano ash FACTORY Offer returns to Australia This week only! Qantas and Virgin have cancelled all flights into and out of Sydney and Melbourne, Adelaide airport has been shut and Canberra flights also hit as the ash cloud from a Chilean volcano drifts across the south of the country. Tens of thousands of people were stranded last week as airlines were forced to ground flights. Now the ash has returned and is set to cause further disruption. Previously, some airlines, such as Virgin Australia, were able to fly below and around the ash cloud – which is now reported to be hovering at between 20,000 and 40,000ft (6-13km) but

this time they have been advised against doing so. Qantas said its policy was not to fly below the ash cloud, because it brought risks that it was simply not prepared to take. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology estimated Adelaide will be affected for 24 hours, Canberra and Sydney for around 36 to 48 hours, and

Melbourne for 36 to 48 hours from Wednesday. The ash cloud from Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano is circling the Earth for a second time. The eruption, which began on 4th June, has caused levels of flight disruption not seen since the Icelandic eruption in April last year that paralysed flights thoughtout the world,

Girl 'kidnapped for suicide attack' A nine-year old girl who was abducted several days ago from her home in Peshawar in north-west Pakistan has said that she was taken by militants to an area near the Afghan border and made to wear an explosive vest for a planned suicide attack. Sohana Jawed told a

press conference organised by the police on Monday that she was put in a suicide vest and told to stand near some soldiers, but she threw the vest off and ran away. Police said they have launched an operation to search for the kidnappers who escaped. However, the

authorities in Peshawar said they have not received a complaint of a missing girl and have not identified a resident with her name. Suicide attacks by girls are rare, but militants in Pakistan have often recruited young boys to carry them out.

A Mulberry brand handbag is a “must have” for lots of women and this is reflected in their just-announced pre-tax profits’ jump of 358% to £23.3 million. Its total retail sales were worth £73.5 million. It has doubled its production of women's handbags and is increasing its Somerset factory's production capacity by 30% increasing the workforce by 50 new manufacturing jobs. Its share price has risen by more than 500% in the

Like-for-like sales to June 4th this year were up 42% on the same period last year. With fans of the brand including Kate Moss, Cheryl Cole and Helen O'Neill, the company also has a line named after model and TV presenter Alexa Chung. Established in 1971,

Rental prices for houses and apartments are rocketing in the London area as available properties become less and less. Tenants looking for decent properties are “gazumping” each other in the best locations and for the best furnished and equipped properties, making landlords bigger and bigger profits. London rents for May increased for the fourth month in a row according

to research – by 5% making the average monthly rent £696, or £30 higher than in April according to LSL Property Services who are one of Britains largest lettings agencies. However, rental prices in other areas of the UK fell during May with the West Midlands having the biggest fall at 0.7%, followed by the South West at 0.6% and Wales at 0.2%. At the other end of the scale, rents raced ahead by

Mulberry handbags are not cheap, but if you look in some of the outlet stores and on ebay, you can very often pick up last season's model for a fraction of the price. 1.4% in the East during May, while they were 1.1% higher in the North East and up 1% in Yorkshire and the Humber and the North West. Average rents in London are now 7.7% higher than they were a year ago, although the cost of being a tenant has dropped by 1.2% and 0.4% in the East and South West respectively. Tenant arrears fell slightly during May, with 11.5% of rent either paid late or not paid at all during the month, down from 11.8% the previous month, but still above the average of 10.6% seen during 2010. Overall, the group estimates that a total of £277m of rent was unpaid in May. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors said that the amount the banks are demanding from would-be property buyers is just pricing buying out of the market and putting pressure on more and more people to rent who can’t afford the £20 - £30k deposits demanded.

Government U-turn It was announced on Monday evening that the government is likely to scrap its plans to halve sentences handed down for crimes as long as the accused pleads guilty at an early stage. Justice Secretary Ken Clarke, according to reports, was trying to reduce the population of Britain’s prisons by giving concessions to those who did not waste so much court time with lawyers etc having to prove a defendant’s guilt. However,

once it was announced that the scheme would include those who had committed violent crimes such as rape there was such a backlash from MPs and the general public alike that the big climb down started and the scheme has all but been scrapped with a second reading of the proposed Bill planned for next Wednesday. Ken Clarke denies any U-Turn but there have already been calls for his sacking by opposition MPs over the proposals.

Silence Of e Lambs killer being deported back to the UK A British man who has completed a jail sentence for abducting and raping a young woman in Australia is to be deported back to the UK. Leslie Neil Cunliffe, now 63-years-old moved to Australia in 1967, staying there on a visa. In 1999, in an area known as Geelong, near Melbourne, Victoria, posing as a policeman he stopped a young woman in her car and kidnapped her at gunpoint. He took her to a shed where he raped her, tied her to a chair, strapped a fake bomb to her and made her record a ransom message demanding $1 million Australian dollars from her family before putting tape over her eyes and mouth. At his trial Cunliffe was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in jail but this was reduced to 12 years on appeal and he was released in April of this year. He is

currently being detained in Victoria Detention Centre until he is deported for breach of his visa. Local MP Darren Cheeseman said that the terms of his visa stated that visitors must be of good character. “Clearly having been convicted of rape he is not of good character," Mr Cheeseman said. "Speaking to the family, they are just pleased that he is in a detention centre, in custody, and that their daughter will not run into him – that is something that they're enormously relieved about. "I know the family had a lot of concern about him and I was very determined to see him be deported and that process is well and truly under way."

At the time of the attack a police spokeswoman said the garage where the attack took place was "bizarre and horrendous and like something from Silence Of The Lambs," and that the kidnapping was "just like a movie script". It is not known exactly when Cunliffe will be returned to Britain but Mr Cheeseman said: "I think the family and the Geelong community will feel a great deal of relief that he is going to be deported and will never be in Australia again." Of course, once he gets back to the UK he will be deemed to have paid the price for his crimes and be back on the streets of the UK.

Pensions debate

Deportee slashes throat

The age at which UK citizens will receive their state pension rages on, with MPs voting on Monday to raise the age to 66 for both men and women by the year 2018, with a vote for the proposal of 302 and against 232, despite a petition signed by over 170 MPs calling for a re-think on the subject.

A visa overstayer being deported from the UK back to Jamaica on Monday smuggled a razor on board the Virgin plane and slashed his throat. Emergency services said the self-inflicted wounds were superficial and closed them with glue. Those that saw the incident have been offered counselling. The flight was cancelled but took off yesterday (Tuesday) after the 449 passenger spent the night in a hotel. The man has been treated and has been put back in detention for deportation.

Ros Altmann, the director general of over-50s organisation Saga, has warned that ministers could face a costly legal challenge if they do not moderate the proposals.

"Ministers must listen to reason on this issue. The current plans are unfair and may, indeed, be illegal in public law terms, since they clearly do not give women adequate notice," she said. The government have said that women over 55 caught in the trap who have been given less than five years to alter their financial plans may be offered a “transitional settlement”. This would affect approximately 500,000 women.

Upset at Picasso Museum

U3A group leaders needed

Picasso's daughter-in-law, Christine-Ruiz Picasso (pictured), refused to inaugurate an exhibition on Monday, accusing the museum and the Junta de Andalucia of using Picasso's works for political purposes. In a hand written letter distributed at a press conference, Ms RuizPicasso said she had not been informed about the exhibition, called Viñetas en la frente (Comic strips at the front), based on a series of anti-war drawings in comic strip form which Picasso produced in January 1937. Copies of the strips were on sale at the Second Republic's Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris that year, to raise funds for

the Republican cause. Ms Ruiz-Picasso objected to the pieces being shown in what she called “a controversial electoral period” – the conservative Partido Popular is tipped to win the next regional election, putting an end to more than 30 years of Socialist government in Andalucia. Some PP leaders have accused the Socialists of using the spectre of the civil war to turn voters against their party. Ms Ruiz-Picasso

After discussing the matter in private with Ms RuizPicasso, Sr Plata said in a statement that his department “categorically rejected any party political or opportunistic use of this or any other exhibition”, but insisted that all the members of the Picasso Museum Malaga Foundation, of which Ms Ruiz-Picasso is honorary president, had been given all the details of both exhibitions months ago.

Swedish girl's killer jailed without bail A Fuengirola judge has sentenced the 30-year-old Moroccan accused of killing an 18-year-old Swedish girl and wounding her friend to jail to await trial. He was denied bail. A.B. had registered at the Hostal El Cid in Fuengirola last Friday for one night and was given a room below the Swedish girls who were staying on the fifth floor. According to the police, the man had run into the two girls at a night club before they returned to their room around 2 am on Saturday morning. A.B. returned around 3 am, looking drunk according to the night receptionist. Minutes

Finnish tourists case reopened Prosecutors are asking for four years in jail for the man who caused the accident in which nine Finnish tourists died in April 2008. Jesus G.R., who was then 27 and driving a 4x4, tried to overtake the bus at 120 kph in wet weather on a dangerous corner, but collided with the back of the vehicle. It crashed into the median, loosening a metal crash barrier which penetrated the bus, killing nine tourists and wounding 26. The bus was taking them to the airport to catch their plane home. A judge released the man, who was drunk at the time of the accident, from jail on bail of €18,000 in June 2008, considering him not to be a flight risk. The bus driver brought the current private action and his lawyers are also asking for a six-year driving licence suspension. He and the surviving tourists have already been paid compensation.

Is it all over for the waiting game? One way of evading Spanish Inheritance Tax may be about to end. Written by

Many people may know that it is a quirk of the Spanish tax system that taxes prescribe. This means that after a certain period of time, if the taxes have not been declared and paid and the Tax Office hasn’t taken any steps to enforce the tax then, it prescribes and the Tax Office is barred from taking any action to enforce the tax. This method of not paying taxes has always been illegal tax evasion rather than a legitimate avoidance scheme. However it has often been used in Spain, both by Spanish families and by foreigners as a way of not paying the rather harsh inheritances taxes which are levied in Spain, and in particular in Andalucía (where allowances are less generous than other regions). The prescription period for inheritance tax is four and a half years from the date of death. Although it has been used

successfully to avoid tax by many people in the past, it was never a preferable course of action. As well as being illegal, it was also risky and meant that the property could not be sold for at least four and a half years after the death of the previous owner. Added to this is the significant problem which can be caused if intended recipients themselves died within the waiting period before having officially accepted their inheritance. The tax office has now got wise to this particular method of evasion and has come up with quite a clever way of closing the loophole. Tax officers are checking through the death certificates of all the people who have died in the locality of the tax office and are cross referencing the names of the deceased people with the Land Registry records. In this way they are identifying estates where the

5

00

inheritance tax has not been declared. When “evaders” have been identified, the tax office levies interest on the tax which is 5% of the tax after six months from the date of death and increases by 5% every three months thereafter up to a total of 20%. More serious than the interest are the fines which the tax office can levy if deliberate evasion is suspected. It is possible that the beneficiaries are distant cousins or suchlike who were not aware of the death – in which case they will only be charged the interest. However, if the beneficiaries are close relatives or even co-owners of the property, deliberate tax evasion will be assumed. Depending on the size of the estate and the evidence as to whether there was a deliberate attempt to defraud the tax office, the office, the offence will be considered “leve” (light), “grave”

Jon Sutton, Solicitor and Registered Foreign Lawyer at De Cotta Law in Coin

(serious) or “muy grave” (very serious). The fines can vary from 50% to 150% of the tax due which could equate to many tens of thousands of Euros. If the tax is paid immediately, the tax office is likely to be more lenient. This new initiative has led to some confusion because where there are non-resident beneficiaries or the deceased was non resident, the tax declaration is done at the central tax office in Madrid. However there is little communication between the central tax office and the regional tax offices. This has led to a situation where people who have correctly declared and paid their tax in Madrid are receiving tax demands from the local tax office. If this occurs, and beneficiaries receive such a demand they need to go to the local office with proof that the tax has been declared, or employ a lawyer to do so.

9

95

As mentioned in a previous article, pressure from the European Union may lead to a dramatic overhaul of the Spanish inheritance tax system. This initiative by the tax office may therefore be short-lived. However, in the meantime, it should not be ignored. Consular Road Show with Jeremy Browne Lost calls Consular MP Encourages Greater Expat Integration The recent consular road show spearheaded by Consular Minister Jeremy Browne MP and Steve Jones the Málaga British Consul, was considered a success from both sides. Over a hundred interested British residents attended the meeting in Alhaurin El Grande last week looking mainly for advice on living in Spain. Mr Browne encouraged these British expatriates to get more out of living in Spain by following a few simple but do-able steps. The first step recommended is greater integration for expats living here, part or full time, by registering with the local town hall to be included on the Padrón. Registering on the Padrón results in benefits for both those registering and the municipality.

The Padrón, if you’re not sure is a list of all people living within a municipality (permanent resident or not). It is confidential, protected by Spanish data protection laws, and forms the basis for calculations for the number of health centres, police officers, fire fighters, schools and so on. Being on the Padrón is also a requirement for voting in the local and European elections. Recommendation two, learn to speak at least some Spanish. He went on to suggest that for the million plus Brits who live in Spain for at least part of the year, life could be far easier and far more enjoyable with a little spoken Spanish. Recommendation three, get involved. With so many retired foreign residents having spare time on their hands, undertaking

voluntary work, he said, was an excellent way for a deeper integration into local society and of improving the quality of life for the more vulnerable in need of a little help now and then. He expressed his delight that the British Consulates especially in Málaga had so many good working partnerships with local organisations and charities and mentioned several, like Age Concern and The Royal British Legion, by name Finally Mr Browne drew attention to the often over looked importance of travel insurance for friends and family when coming to visit. A little money spent on travel insurance, he said, could go a long way to help in the event of an emergency, instead of hoping for the best and relying on hosts and family

During the week beginning 13th June, Moviestar/Telefonica had severe problems with the telephone answering service as many of you will have experienced. As a result Age Concern would like to apologise to those people who rang them on 951 318 234 and left, or tried to leave, a message if the office was closed. Those calls have disappeared completely and they would ask you to call again if your query has not been dealt with.

if things go wrong. Positive observations and comments. But just who is Jeremy Browne MP? Born on 17th May 1970 in Islington UK, he, like many of us living here, is a well travelled gent – in his early years he lived in Iran, Belgium and Zimbabwe. The literary Jeremy Browne was the editor of the award- winning university newspaper at Nottingham where studied politics. In 2005 he was elected Liberal Democrat MP for Taunton Deane. In 2010 he was appointed as one of the Ministers of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). His responsibilities are as equally diverse as his upbringing and interests. They include; Consular Policy, Human Rights, Olympics, Drugs and

International Crime. He has his own geographical areas of responsibility which stretch from the Caribbean to Australasia and the Pacific via Nepal and India. His liberalism is a belief that power (political) should start at the bottom and feed upwards. He enjoys watching county cricket and supports Queens Park Rangers. Gibraltar

News Step forward for Environmentalist group worried prescriptions The Gibraltar Health Association has announced that it will be drafting legislation for all Gibraltar citizens over the age of 60 to receive free prescription medicines after pressure from pensioners. This will be irrespective of whether either partner is still in employment and thereby still contributing towards the Group Practice

Medical Scheme. The law as it stands – which goes back to legislation made in 1973 – states that if either is working then neither get free prescriptions. Gibraltar pensioners have hailed this as a big step forward for the mature people of The Rock and hope the new legislation will be speedily accepted into the statute books.

Gustavo Bacarisas exhibition now open

Born in Gibraltar in 1872, artist Gustavo Bacarisas was the first person to be given the Freedom of The City of Gibraltar and an exhibition of his work opened yesterday Tuesday 21st) at the Casemates Galleries. Entitled Life and Legacy the exhibition will be open for month and commemorates the 30th anniversary of his death. Bacarisas designed among other things, the poster for the 1929-1930 IberoAmerican exhibition in Seville. But his varied styles brought him worldwide fame and his paintings are now very sought after at auctions throughout the world.

He studied in Paris and worked in Buenos Aires until 1916 after which he relocated to Seville where he died in 1971. During his life, he also travelled to Sweden to design the sets for the opera Carmen and also for El Amor Brujo at the Teatro Madrid. During the Spanish Civil War he once again relocated, this time to the Portuguese island of Madeira, returning to Gibraltar in 1937 before moving to Seville. He was given the Gold Medal and the title of Honorary Professor by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of St Isabella of Hungary.

The Environmental Safety Group of Gibraltar has voiced its concerns over the overturning of the vessel “Deneb” (registered in Antigua and Barbuda) in the Juan Carlos I Bay in Algecieras Port when it ran aground on Saturday.

The removal of the containers – 34 of which are inside the hold of the capsized ship – are being carried out by a local company, Steelmac. Work is also being carried out to seal another hold and then empty it of water.

Algecieras port officials have said that none of the ships containers carried hazardous materials but vessels arriving and departing the port have been asked to keep their speed down to avoid making unneccesary waves that may spread any oil and endanger salvage workers.

The environmental group urged the Gibraltar government to make official enquiries to the Spanish government into this accident and said it trusted "that we shall be informed as soon as possible of the precise details as far as these are known. While the accident was not explosive in nature, this is still a very serious incident especially as it remains unclear as to the exact contents of the goods in the containers which, if toxic, could escalate the impact of the incident to the environment. There are already reports of oil patches washing up along the shoreline," said a representative of the ESG.

Work to contain the environmental impact started immediately and by Tuesday, 70 of the 144 tonnes of fuel she was carrying had already been extracted. The complete operation is expected to take at least a week. It was reported that a small oil spill had occured but that this had been contained by the floating booms put in place by the Danish salvage company Svitzer and 800 litres of oily water had been sucked up by three skimmers. Two of the four floating cranes had already arrived on Monday to help start righting Deneb.

In the meantime, Maersk shipping company has been forced to use another terminal port as access to their usual port is blocked by the stricken vessel, plus some ferries to Morocco have been suffering delays.

Note: Gibraltar phone numbers consist of eight digits. When phoning from within Gibraltar just dial the eight digits. When phoning from the Costa del Sol and the rest of Spain or from abroad precede the number with the international dialling code which is 00350.

Memo from

Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Real democracy now

Getting rid of the shadows

A

C

s I watched a programme on Spanish television the other night about the Real Democracy Now movement, I couldn’t help thinking that it would be a good idea to start an NGO called Democrats without Frontiers along the lines of Doctors, Firemen and Guardia Civil without Frontiers. Then all those idealistic young people who were crammed into Madrid’s Puerta del Sol could head off to the Third World and start teaching the locals about democracy.

A

t best, they would be deported, second best would be a spell in jail – and believe me just a few days in a Third World jail would put you off jail for life, if you got out alive – and at worst, they would simply “disappear”, like hundreds of thousands of others have over the years in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Those who made it back home would have a much better understanding of the democracy they enjoy in post-Franco Spain.

A

dmittedly most of the people involved in the Real Democracy Now movement have valid cause for complaint – the unemployment rate among people under 25 in Spain is more than twice the national average – some 45 per cent as opposed to 21 per cent. They’re already being called the lost generation – many have never held a job since leaving school and their future prospects are very bleak indeed. The older ones are not only jobless but also in danger of losing their homes because they can’t pay the mortgage – hence there have been several incidents in the past few days of crowds turning up to stop the bailiffs evicting families from their homes. Perhaps some of these people should have thought twice about taking out mortgages but the banks are also to blame for making it sound so easy.

W

hatever their grouses, most of them are seeking peaceful, viable solutions, or at least that seemed to be the case until last week, when dozens of people – claiming to belong to the movement but who turned out to be gay rights activists – heckled and jostled Madrid mayor Alberto Ruiz Galardon and his wife outside their home when they tried to take their dog for its nightly constitutional. That set off a lot of alarm bells. Except in the Basque Country, politicians and government workers at all levels here have rarely bothered to hide their home addresses from the public. Some of the more important ones have bodyguards because they’re possible targets for the Basque terrorist group ETA but the rest had no cause to worry – or so they thought. Now they’re having nightmares about angry hordes turning up on their doorsteps to demand “real democracy now”. The latest report on Monday was that ETA plans to use the tactic to intimidate politicians in the Basque Country.

T

hen just two days after that incident, Catalan regional premier Artur Mas and several MPs were forced to go to the opening of the new parliament by helicopter. The building itself is located in a park which helped the police stationed at the entrances to keep out the crowds milling around outside. However, those MPs who tried to walk in were jostled and heckled and had paint thrown at them, while those who drove in had the unpleasant experience of seeing all those hate-filled faces pressed up against their car windows, yelling “we’ll kill you” and “are you afraid”, among other things. The saddest incident involved blind MP Josep Maria Llop – they only tried to take his guide dog away four times before he made it into the safety of the park. When another MP asked the protesters if they weren’t ashamed, they yelled back – he might be blind, but he’s an MP belonging to CiU (the governing party).

T

he violent incidents merely confirmed what the authorities had suspected – that extremist groups had infiltrated the movement with the intention of using it for their own “revolutionary” ends. It also showed the genuine protesters just how easily they could be used or infiltrated. It was later revealed that plain clothes policemen had penetrated the most violent parts of the crowd to identify the instigators. Several were arrested and some will be charged with trying to obstruct elected members of parliament from carrying out their duties – which carries a jail term of up to three years.

T

hings have quietened down since then but I suspect the authorities are quietly dealing with the violent extremist elements identified by police infiltrators. Real Democracy Now spokesmen have said they are also taking steps to identify such elements in their midst and reinforced their credibility by organising six totally peaceful marches in Madrid last Sunday which converged on Parliament to demand – what else – real democracy now. But one newspaper put it very succinctly on its front page on Monday – just two figures: 22,900,000 (voters in the May 22nd elections) and 156,000 (the estimated number of marchers).

oncerns are popping up in the Basque Country and Navarre over the government’s quiet but ongoing measures to scale-back the number of bodyguards assigned to councillors who have in the past been threatened by ETA. Designed as a costcutting move, the task is also being seen by some as a good faith gesture designed to let the terrorists and other radical groups know that the government believes ETA wants peace. But councillors from both the Socialist Party and Partido Popular (PP) are quite upset.

W

e can only hope that the quickpaced events occurring in the Basque Country are taking place for the better. The people in the northern regions have suffered too long already and any deadly surprise would be devastating to the held-out hope that things are on the long road to improving the lives of thousands of weary Basques who want a definite solution to the question of independence.

Gaining confidence

T

he scaling back began some months ago. Former councillors who left office will no longer get bodyguards while those who are still serving will be assigned one instead of two. These publicly-paid-for human “shadows” are also being taken away from the judicial officials, journalists and other groups who have had threats from ETA in the past. Compounding the situation is a new policy being implemented by the pro-Basque independence coalition Bildu to prevent bodyguards from entering town halls and other public buildings in municipalities where they govern. On Monday in Andoain, Guipúzcoa province, where Bildu Mayor Ana Carrere recently took office, councillors from the Socialist Party and the PP were told by municipal police that they could not enter the town hall with their protectors. In San Sebastián , where another Bildu mayor took office, the city council is expected to discuss implementing a similar measure. Bildu says it wants to push for peace in the Basque Country and Navarre by doing “its part” to ease the tensions and showing the world that it is safe for anyone to walk the streets alone at night.

A

nd what about the bodyguards themselves? It is expected that nearly 1,500 will lose their jobs once this eliminating process is completed. One security expert told El País that it will be difficult for them to find work in this field after they hit the unemployment queue. Without any violence or threats, there is little chance that these bodyguards will be ever be needed again.

The majority rules, OK.

T

hen from jail we hear from the notorious former ETA military chief who is said to have been responsible for the December 2006 attack on Madrid airport’s parking garage that left two people dead. Garikoitz Aspiazu, known as "Txeroki," says that it is time for the terrorist group to lay down its arms and seek other solutions to the struggle for independence. His recorded conversation was made in the Navalcarnero penitentiary and a copy given to El País.

E

lena Salgado, the economy minister, continues to insist that Spain will not need a bailout, yet the markets continue to punish this country. On Monday, the markets fell across Europe after the news that European finance ministers had delayed setting up a second rescue package for Greece until the government in Athens implements more reforms. Salgado says that the markets know that Spain is implementing its own reforms, including fiscal consolidation. But there is concern in Brussels about the risk of possible contagion across the continent should Greece default on its payments next month. But there are some clear signs that the Spanish government is able to hold its head above water, for now. On Tuesday, Spain raised some 3 billion at an auction of short-term debt, which some analysts believe was a robust step that shows its will be able to skirt the contagion. At the same time, it hired the Royal Bank of Scotland to help coordinate the planned privatization of the nations’ two biggest airports – Madrid’s Barajas and Barcelona’s El Prat. The National Lottery is also about to be put on the auction block. The key is to attract investors back to the nation so that global confidence in the Spanish economy is once again restored. And the Socialist government appears to be on the right track.

Sadly, as is the case with so many charities at the moment, funds are sadly lacking and some parts of the cemetery have a neglected air, with weeds encroaching round the stones and masonry in need of cleaning and repair. It would be sad indeed to see a place so unique and full of history lost to future generations of visitors. o learn more about the English cemetery including their evening tours and concerts look at their website: www.cementerioinglesmala ga.org

The original walled cemetery he built still exists within the current one, with the stone graves covered in cockle shells – sailors were buried here as well as children who died in the epidemics so common in that era. Outside the wall are two simple white headstones marking the graves of Gerald Brennan, the author and Hispanist and his wife, the American poetess, Gamel Woolsey. William Mark himself is buried here as is the writer Majorie GriceHutchinson whose detailed history of the cemetery makes fascinating reading. Elsewhere lie German sailors,

The city housed several consulates, including that of the British Consul to the Kingdom of Granada. Spain, of course, being an exclusively Roman Catholic country considered unbelievers who were not of “the true faith” as heretics. The English Protestants were tolerated in life but no provision at all was made for them in death. If a nonRoman Catholic died in Malaga burial was a gruesome affair reminiscent of a horror movie. The body had to be carried to the seashore under cover of darkness “at the dead hour of midnight” and buried by torchlight “feet-foremost” standing upright facing out to sea. All this was carried out under the supervision of an armed guard of soldiers to ensure that the ritual was complied with. Once this was done, of course, the sea

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

e Green Lantern By Martin Campbell, Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins

Battling it out at the box office, as the film gets a panning by the US critics In a summer stuffed with superheroes battling it out at the box office The Green Lantern may wish he was able to use his powers on the US critics, who were distinctly underwhelmed by the movie when it premiered last week.

the super-hero stable, like Batman, Superman and Spidey. It appears that throughout the Universe a powerful force has existed for centuries to protect intergalactic peace and justice known as the Green Lantern Corps.

First of all – who is he? Well, The Green Lantern has been around in comic book form since 1940, but has not had anything like the impact of the others in

Each member wears a ring that grants him his superpowers. But the Corps is now faced by a new enemy; Parallex is so powerful that they have to

turn to a human to help save the Universe. So that would be Hal Jordan then (a buff looking Reynolds), a brilliant but arrogant test pilot. He is drafted in, taught how to fight and how to master his gravitydefying powers by Corps leader Sinestro (Strong wearing pointy ears). But it’s never plain sailing when you are off to save the planet and another dastardly foe enters the field in the shape of Hector

Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) a brilliant scientist – why are they always brilliant? – infected by inter-galactic forces. He mutates into a murderous yellow-eyed beast determined to defeat the Green Lantern. Whatever. Anyway, it cost $100 million so the 3D special effects and battles will keep the audience entertained, but it’s probably one only for fans of the comic.

t seems strange to me now that the years of my youth should be the subject of nostalgia films. When I was living through the late sixties and early seventies, they never felt like they could ever be considered nostalgic. Come to that, neither did the eighties but Ashes to Ashes on the BBC proved that the eighties are now officially nostalgia-ble. But if there is one thing that will definitely destroy all your illusions about how close in historical terms we are to our childhoods, it’s the depiction of our childhoods as the basis for a good fashioned film about the olden days. here have been a number of recent films based around the seventies and eighties that have really captured the atmosphere, fashions, homes and haircuts of the times. ne that I watched this week that still has me toetapping and humming away to myself, is Soul Boy, a homage to the Northern Soul music scene of 1972 and in particular to the Casino Club discotheque in Wigan, which was apparently at one stage voted the best disco in the World. ot only did I love the music from Soul Boy but I also was fascinated by the clothes, the settings for the film and in particular, the props. Whoever was sent out to design sets for the film obviously spent a lot of time with my Nan during the sixties. Joe, the main character in Soul Boy, has the same shaped wooden headboard as my Nan had. If I describe it as varnished ply with a curve towards the foot of the bed at each end, you’ll know exactly what it looked like. Well you will if you are 45 or older. n fact, when you looked around Joe’s house, it could have been my Nan’s house in 1972, except I don’t remember her having a poster of a Ford Capri in Canary Yellow, but otherwise you get the idea. From around the same time I do remember my Dad’s friends sporting Tom Jones sideburns like Joe’s Brendan and I suppose the only thing missing from the film are the headscarves my Mum used to sport at the time. nother prop that firmly roots the date of a story is the Parka. Everyone had one or wanted one of the iconic coats and as well as featuring in Soul Boy, the fur trimmed Parka is also an integral part of

the brilliantly funny film East is East. Once again, the set dressing, props and locations managers really done good on this one and the production really leaves you thinking it could have been filmed 40 years old.

I

’m still waiting to watch Ricky Gervais’ film ‘Cemetery Junction’. I already know that it is based on his formative years growing up around seventies Reading and I already know I want to see it because I also grew up around Reading in the seventies. In fact, the first bedsit I tried to rent for myself at the tender age of 17 was near Cemetery Junction. I say ‘tried to rent’ because Mum and Dad wouldn’t let me go there on account of it being on the third floor of a converted house with no fire escape, no bathroom of it’s own and having a kitchen on a different floor. At the time it felt like they very unreasonably stopped me from doing everything I wanted to do. etting back to nostalgia in films, I think Billy Elliot got it right on the nose. While the film is essentially about a young boy’s dream of becoming a professional dancer, the back story of his family’s involvement in the miners’ strike offers a no holds barred vision of the brutality of the conflict on all sides. Above all it really highlights the financial hardships and moral dilemmas of striking miners, a subject that has not been covered in film as much as it could have been. o, the moral of this story is that the next time you buy those wavy mirrors from Ikea or a new pair of pink Crocs, just think that you can expect them to appear in some new nostalgia film, some time around 2050. It’ll probably be a film about the hilarious mass exodus of Brits to the Costas. In the words of Gladys Knight (in the talking, pre-amble bit on her version of Help Me Make It Through The Night), “as bad as they seem, these will be the good old days for our children”.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

This is not the time to do anything half heartedly or to take short cuts, it is all about going the distance and taking the high road this week. As Mars moves into Gemini you will find that your mood lightens and you will want to avoid any ‘heavy’ conversations, others find you easy to be around and will naturally gravitate towards you. Home is likely to be calling you by the weekend and you will wish to spend some time with loved ones.

Ian says; “Courgettes are the sort of vegetable, in my opinion, that need a little va va voom added to them to make them interesting. This recipe makes eight delicious courgettes, serve 1 or 2 per person.”

Your ability to interact and depend upon others is the key to your overall success this week; it is all about successful and effectively communicating. It seems that you are being held up to lead others by your own personal experience and understanding – you may want to go to the shops and buy an apple pie but for now you will need to know how to make it yourself. The wealth you are now attracting could remain with your for generations.

Ingredients:

You at this moment in time know what to say and how to say it in order to find a reasonable meeting point. Even in the most emotional of situations you will know on your own what to do, with your instinct being the keenest radar you have. Others will be there to support you in an arduous process but if you rely on yourself first you will find more direction. The past is circling back in some way, this time you can make it right and move on with conviction and relief. Get out of the way of yourself and let the universe show you what is possible, much bigger things can happen for you than you are aware of or that you are allowing yourself to believe are possible. The summer solstice will herald the beginning of something big that you have earned and it is making its way to you. Show the world you know what to do then prepare the gates to open. Remain open and positive to all kinds of possibilities. Protecting that which matters to you above anything and then showing others how to do the same is what this week is all about. Be careful not to act upon impulse or become reckless in your decisions. Inside you are crying out to take some form of action and you will be debating what the right thing to do is. Showcasing your talents right now will have an amplified effect and cause others to take notice of you – actions and commitments on your part seem to matter more than anything right now. Remarkable change is in the air that can re-direct the course of your plans. Doors are likely to blow open that you were not even aware were closed. It is time for you to stop struggling and use the path of least resistance, go with the flow, let the wind take you where it wants to. Home is what is important to you, the focus on family and your future and the way you feel about those issues will be a driving force. Support like you have never had before is making its way to you.

BAKED STUFFED COURGETTES This recipe has been sent to us from Ian Wooldridge who is Head Chef at Kimbridge Farm, Romsey. You can use yellow ones for a change if you want.

( Makes 8 )

● 75gms of long grain rice ● 8 large courgettes, approx. 275gms each ● Olive oil ● 250gms of minced lamb ● 1 medium onion, finely diced ● 2 cloves of garlic, very finely diced or minced ● 4 sun-dried tomatoes (soaked in hot water for ½ hour if dried) ● ½ tsp of dried oregano ● ¼ tsp of dried rosemary ● Large pinch of cinnamon ● 140gms tin of tomato purée concentrate

● Juice of 1 lemon ● Salt & pepper ● 50gms of sultanas ● 20gms of pine nuts ● Handful of finely chopped parsley ● 125gms of goats cheese, crumbled

Directions 1. Firstly, cook the rice in slightly salted water, drain and set aside. 2. Now, chop the ‘flower’ end off the courgettes and reserve. 3. Then using an apple corer, remove the pulpy centre being careful not to break the sides nor pierce the far end of the courgette. You may have to force the handle of the apple corer inside the courgette to reach right in. Take as much of the pulp out as possible and discard. 4. Heat the oven to 190C (170C fan) / Gas Mark 5. In a large frying pan or skillet, heat a little olive oil and fry the minced lamb until lightly browned. Add the onion and garlic and continue to fry until the onion has

softened. Finely chop the sun-dried tomatoes and add to the pan with the oregano, rosemary and cinnamon. Stir in the tomato purée and lemon juice. 5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 6. Remove from the heat. Mix in thoroughly the sultanas, pine nuts, parsley and goats cheese. Fill each courgette with the mixture with a teaspoon and using a wooden spoon handle to push it in. Replace the end of the courgette and hold in place with a cocktail stick. 7. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes covered with foil and then a further 15 minutes uncovered and serve

Something within has turned a key, some part of your life has turned around. A payment is making its way to you or feedback that you have been waiting for, whether it is a financial deal or a loving response from another. Whatever is coming you have patiently earned. Networking is promising this week and it is likely that you could take a spontaneous short trip. Things may have been September 23rd far from perfect but there is a feeling that life is moving in the right direction October 22nd again.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

Balance within your close relationships is very important to you, you want a partner that will be there for you but that also means that you have to be willing to be there for them as well. Even though you are perfectly capable of functioning on your own you never really hit your stride until you have a solid and dependable other. It is not about falling in love with love but deeper in love with a person. You are being taken out of your comfort zone to experience life from a different perspective.

SAGITTARIUS You have been carrying a lot of emotional weight lately but now is the right time to showcase your talents and abilities as others will not know what you are capable of until you show them. When others can see what you can do it has a positive and dynamic effect inspiring them to join in. There is no other sign that has the ability to drum up as much enthusiasm and support. Take a November 22nd December 21st risk, let go of the emotional shackles and allow yourself to shine.

CAPRICORN It is all in the details this week, check and double check that small print. You cannot assume that what others are telling you is the total truth, no matter how convincing they seem especially when it comes to you making a major purchase. You may find yourself helping and inspiring another to follow their own path, to ignore the crowd and have the courage to be themselves. Within nd December 22 your own relationship you will be working on effective communication. January 19th

Cuando, cuando, cuando Carrying on where we left off two weeks ago let's look at some more useful expressions using the word cuando - when. If cuando has no accent on the "a" it just means when. If it has an accent on the "a", this indicates that it is a question. First if you want to find out when something is going to be ready you ask.. ¿Para cuándo? - By when? Of course you will possibly get the answer Mañana which may or may not have any bearing on actual time. ¿Para cuándo lo quieres? - When do you want it by? Lo quiero para el lunes - I want it for Monday ¿Desde cuándo? - since when? ¿Desde cuándo vives en España? - Since when have you lived in Spain? ¿Hasta cuándo? - Until when? ¿Hasta cuándo está abierto? - Until when are you open? And let's finish up with a couple of proverbs involving cuando:

Family issues and problems that need sorting have come to the fore for you to deal with. The reality is you need a solid base that you know you can rely upon to stand with you in the weeks and months ahead. It is time to rise above past hurts or actions and be willing to start fresh all over again. Put your plans into action and make those major changes, your instincts will be right on the ball. Make sure those you care deeply about know and realise.

Cuando el gato no está, los ratones se diviertan - When the cat's away, the mice will play (literally when the cat isn't there , the mice have fun) Cuando las ranas críen pelo - When pigs fly (literally when frogs grow hair) Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time,

You have been given the greatest creativity and imagination of all the signs therefore it is important for you to follow your own ideas and not public opinion. A wake up call is coming, the rose tinted glasses are coming off and you are being asked to see the world as it really is. Any illusions that were building are being shattered and broken down one by one. Wheels need to be set in motion and you are the one that can see how to do it. Speak up – your opinions have value.

at white dress makes 4.6 million dollars!

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip is year’s Black Ball hosted by Alicia Keys Founded in 2003, the Keep A Child Alive organisation has raised over £17 million and managed to help over a quarter of a million people. This year's star studded Black Ball at the Roundhouse in London raised money to help families affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa and India and was hosted by Alicia Keys, famous for her hit single with Jay-Z, Empire State of the Mind. The event was co-hosted by Mark Ronson with guests including Paloma Faith, Jay Sean, Chipmunk and Tinnie Tempah.

The white dress that Marilyn Monroe is famous for has gone under the hammer Monroe’s character in the 1955 Billy Wilder film “The Seven Year Itch” famously stood over the air outlet to the New York underground train system and the pleated skirt flew up with the blast, being demurely held down by the famous Miss Monroe. It is probably the best known item she ever wore and at a recent auction it raised 4.6 million dollars. Add on to that the

auction house fees etc and that white dress cost the anonymous buyers a whopping 5.6 million dollars. A more demure number worn by Audrey Hepburn in the Ascot races scene of My Fair Lady made 4.5 million dollars after fees for that equally famous black and white dress. The auction sold nearly 600 costumes and

Hollywood props that had been collected over the years by film star Debbie Reynolds including the headdress worn by Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra that went for a mere 100,000 dollars and a guitar used by Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music for 140,000 dollars. Debbie Reynolds, now 79, started her collection

over 40 years ago by going to auctions held by studios such as MGM and Fox and her collection, prior to this latest auction, was said to have more than 3,500 pieces of Hollywood history in it. Miss Reynolds starred with Gene Kelly in Singing In The Rain and was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Not enough money Perhaps the expression “grow up” should come to mind but Playboy owner and founder Hugh Hefner, now aged 85, has been dumped by his 25-year-old fiancée, Crystal Harris, after she did the rounds of the TV stations and magazines looking for a reputed media deal worth half-a-million dollars to be called “I ditched Hef at the altar” – although this has been denied by her agent Michael Blakey, who added: "I have no idea what happened. All I know is that it was an amicable break-up." According to one source she intended to go up the aisle and in front of 300 guests say that she couldn't go through with the marriage. The wedding, which had been planned for last Saturday, was to be filmed for a Lifetime TV reality special and it would

have caused a sensation. However, although there was interest in the story, nobody offered anything like the cash she was looking for. Harris herself told US radio host Ryan Seacrest: "Hef's lifestyle isn't the most normal lifestyle. "This isn't the lifestyle for me, multiple girls around all the time, the Playboy lifestyle. I don't know. I just wanted to be true to myself. I've been having second thoughts about everything. It all happened so fast, and they were going to air a show on it. It was all happening too fast for me." Harris says she will now be focussing on her singing and songwriting career. "The wedding is off. Crystal has had a change of heart," tweeted Hefner.

Perhaps he should try someone a little nearer his own age who may be happy just to look after him and make him comfortable. Some might say “Yes, but what a way to go” but the strain of trying to keep up with these girlies are going to kill the old codger one of these days! The last minute wedding cancellation could be seen as unfortunate timing for Playboy as its July issue hits news stands this week. The blonde beauty is featured on the cover, very scantily clad, with the

More Potter? Fans are baffled by a website that has been released by J K Rowling, creator of Harry Potter and his friends. Clicking on to the site just gives you a countdown to tomorrow, Thursday June 23rd when further information will be released onto the site. The now world famous Mr Potter, Daniel Radcliffe, together with Rupert Grint and Emma Watson first hit the silver screen in 2001 with a very boyish Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with the eighth and last(!) film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Part II” due for release on July 15th.

Fans have been falling into despair thinking that this will be their last ever sighting of Potter and his now grown up friends battling to save the planet against the might and terror of Lord Voldermort (just don’t say his name out loud!). Some Fansites have been given a very short secret preview and, although it is said that the new project is not a book and nothing to do with the film, fansite Leaky Cauldron said: “It is, in a word, breathtaking. That is all we are permitted to say at the moment.” Go to www.pottermore.com to see more.

Skin cancer Sunscreen on the rise chemical not toxic in Spain Two out of every 100,000 Spaniards will develop melanoma this year. According to Miguel Sánchez Viera, head of the skin cancer unit at Madrid's USP San Camilo Hospital, the incidence is rising each year by seven per cent. If the condition is not detected in a reasonable time frame, the chances of successfully treating it are much lower. "It has a very surprising capacity to become metastatic quickly," Dr Sanchez said. The mortality rate is higher among people over 50, but melanoma affects mostly those aged between 25 and

In response to a small body of research indicating that oxybenzone, which blocks ultraviolet light, may mimic the effects of estrogen in the body and promote the growth of cancer cells, researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York have published a rebuttal. After examining all the evidence they concluded that the alarming findings from early animal studies relied

on unrealistic dosages. In the rat study, for instance, animals were fed levels of oxybenzone that would never be achieved in humans through normal exposure to sunscreen. The researchers also reviewed the data on oxybenzone tested on humans. They found that men and women do seem to absorb small levels but there was no evidence that it set off hormonal changes, or

evidence of toxicity. The idea of a compound in sunscreen being absorbed through skin sounds alarming, but researchers pointed out that this is common with skin care products. A Concerned Brit What are they thinking of? Not only is the press putting lives in danger, they should get a proverbial slap for even thinking of publishing it! Prince Harry is a serving member of the British Armed Forces. He enjoys his job. He is apparently liked and respected by his comrades. According to his commanding officers, he does a good job. All correct so far. So what on earth are the British press doing announcing that he may be going back to do, basically what he is paid for, in Afghanistan next year? Last time, some idiot reporter let loose with telling everybody that he was serving over there, not only did it put Harry’s life in danger as he is obviously a high profile target, but it put all the people around him in increasing danger too and he had to be pulled out.

The account declared that Prince Harry would be flying Apache helicopters. Well, he may do in the future but, right now, he doesn’t even finish his training until early 2012 which is at least 6 months away, after which he will carry out weeks, if not months of further duties within the UK. The decision on whether Harry would be allowed back into trouble spots around the world would not be taken until after then. And, as a very senior officer pointed out: “Who knows what Afghanistan will be like by then?” Asked in March what his aim was after he qualified as an Apache pilot, the Prince said: "My goal is to serve my country like everybody else in the British forces. I count myself very, very lucky to have the chance to fly helicopters and even luckier to have the chance to fly the Apache. It's a fantastic piece of kit, it's like flying a robot."

Stargazing By Ken Campbell

The Press, and yes I am very aware that that is what we are here at The News, seem to think that they have a right to print what they like, whenever and wherever they like with absolutely no comeback whatsoever.

If you would like to be kept up to date or take part in any of the events then go to www.kencampbell.info

Freedom of the Press should bring with it responsibilities. Such responsibilities should include not putting people in mortal danger and to be honest, to my way of thinking, not digging the dirt and harming people’s families in the process of “exposing” celebrities and what they get up to. What about their wives, husbands, kids etc? Are they not already hurt enough?

If you had lived 5000 years ago then you would probably have been a Druid spending today nursing a hangover after a night of celebrations at Stonehenge.

Morality and common sense should be what is used before placing anything in print and that seems to be sadly lacking in some newspapers.

receive their state pensions and mentioned people who had retired early on their savings and had budgeted for getting their pensions at 60. Well, I am one of these people and, no matter how frugal I try to be, my savings will now run out before my pension is due at age 66. I cannot understand how government thinking goes but, as far as I am concerned I paid my dues on the understanding that I would get my pension at age 60 and that is what they should stick to. If they have to ‘up the age’ for people joining the system now, well, so be it, they at least will know where they stand. It has been known for years that we are hopefully living longer so why should we pay for their lack of reaction years ago. It’s their fault - not ours - it’s their job to make sure the money is spent properly! CENTRO DE IDIOMAS COIN

Stonehenge and the Solstice Y

our sacrificial sword would be blood stained and hanging in the hallway and your ceremonial robes would be stained with blue Woad as another Summer Solstice comes and goes. he Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, the day that the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky for the northern hemisphere. After today the days gradually get shorter and the nights begin to get longer. For people living south of the equator the opposite is true and today is the shortest day and so mid winter. he Earth is not standing straight up but is tilted over by about 23 ½° and it is this tilt that gives us our seasons. As the Earth orbits around the Sun on 21st /22nd June the north pole of the Earth is at its most extreme, tilted toward the Sun which gives us summer, while on 21st December it is the South Pole that tilts toward the Sun and so its rays are weaker up here and so we get winter. ap makers have conveniently placed imaginary lines around the Earth to mark these extremes of the Suns path across the sky. The Equator is the point on which the Sun will be directly overhead on March 21st and September 21st better known as the Spring and Autumn equinoxes. 23 ½° above the Equator is the tropic of Cancer, on this line the Sun will be directly overhead yesterday and today. Try it for yourself and look at your shadow at about 2 pm and you will see that it is almost directly beneath your feet. The southern counterpart is the tropic of Capricorn where the Sun is directly overhead on December 21st. oving further north is the Arctic Circle. This line marks the point where last night the Sun did not set below the horizon and so had 24 hours of sunlight. The Arctic Circle is also the point on which the Sun doesn’t rise above the horizon on December 21st. arious cultures around the world have celebrated the Solstice for thousands of years, none more so than the ancient Britons. And it is widely believed that Stonehenge in Wiltshire was built with this purpose in mind.

Every year on the Solstice hundreds of Pagan Druids gather at Stonehenge to witness the extraordinary sight as the Sun rises and casts the first rays directly into the centre of the ancient monument. ork on Stonehenge began in around 8000BC and continued with many upgrades up to about 1600BC. There was obviously some long forgotten mystic reason why this particular site was chosen. The giant upright stones that we associate with Stonehenge were transported all the way from Pembrokeshire in Wales 160 miles away in around 2600BC. Archaeologists are still baffled as to the way the stones were transported and how on Earth they managed to raise them over 25 feet to sit on top of the uprights when most of them weigh 50 tons! Unfortunately there are no written records as to either the construction or true purpose of Stonehenge. All sorts of artefacts have been recovered over the thousands of years of study, from animal bones to a decapitated 7th Century Saxon man discovered as late as 1923. arkings around the outer perimeter of the stones seems to suggest the phases of the Moon and with the alignment for the Summer solstice it would suggest that it has astronomical connections, but the stone table in the centre of the circle does indicate that some sort of sacrificial offerings were made. Whatever its true purpose it must have taken a hell of a lot of manpower and dedication to complete. o raise your chalice of mead and drink a toast to your pagan ancestors who laboured so hard and wish them a happy Summer Solstice For more info go to www.kencampbell.info

BBC to drop F1 in 2013? Speculation the BBC is considering axing Formula 1 has intensified over the weekend. It follows fresh reports in The Sunday Times that the UK broadcaster will not renew its current deal at the end of 2013."The proposal to dump F1 will be among a package of measures to be put to the BBC Trust in early autumn," the report claims. It also added: "It has emerged that F1 costs £1 a head for every viewer, compared with the average 7p an hour broadcast cost. for BBC1 and BBC2.

Classics visit Malaga Auto Museum A museum and mountain motoring - SOL Classic Car Club members enjoy both in one day able to spend the morning admiring not only the motors but also the wide range of fashions and artefacts from different periods. At midday the club cars left the bustle of the city behind for the inland countryside of the Axarquia

was celebrated by a huge bunch of silver grapes on the roundabout just outside the village. These vines, of course, produce the muscatel variety of grapes which are dried into those luscious fat raisins or used in the sweet Malaga wine. Some of the classics found the climb a bit too much – it was after all probably the hottest day so far this year – and had to stop to cool down.

proposed combined car display in the city centre but this proved too difficult to sort out with various authorities involved despite several weeks of discussions! A splendid collection of classics gathered in the car park of the old tobacco factory, not quite as impressive as the models inside the museum perhaps but all equally cherished – open-topped sports cars, stately grand tourers, everyday workhorses and even the celebrated “Beast” just as long as the most ostentatious Cadillac. The museum had kindly organised concessionary entrance fees for drivers and passengers who were

east of Malaga. Club member Ken Cotton had stepped in at the last minute with a “Plan B” and organised a run through this spectacular mountain area, following the Ruta de la Pasa and joining the Ruta del Sol y del Aguacate before returning to Churriana for a late lunch. The Route of the Raisin began at Benalgabon climbing steeply into the hills with never-ending views of mountains and the sea. Further inland it was easy to see how it got its name, with vines clustered thickly on every available piece of land, so steep in some parts that it was difficult to see how anyone could harvest the crop. At El Borge the local industry

But then the route wound downwards into the valley and into the pueblo of Benamargosa curled round its dried-up river bed. Here it was cool drinks all round before driving back to the coast along the Sun and Avocado route, with dense plantations on each side of the road.

A trip round the relatively newly opened ring road into the

Sevilla Cricket Club 164 all out beat the new local cricket club by 14 runs after bowling them out for 150. adding only 7 more runs for the loss of 4 wickets. This brought Jason and Andrew together at the wicket and they were determined to stay there. Their partnership of 70 was the highlight of Sevilla’s innings.Best batting 56 by Jason. Best bowling 6 overs 3 wickets for 23 runs by Phil Nuttal. After the interval the home club started badly with Tony walking after the faintest of snicks to the keeper to leave the score on none for 1 off 1 over. This became 2 for 2 of 2 overs when Imthias was saved

VW Golf24 returns to the Nürburgring The number 235 Golf24 has a prominent crew in the cockpit. It is occupied by the Formula 1 legends Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell who take turns with two young guns from Volkswagen’s formula school, Edoardo Mortara & Franck Mailleux The Volkswagen Golf returns to the legendary 24hour race on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife from 23th–26th June, and a number of well-known Volkswagen drivers including René Rast and Peter Terting will be joined on the grid by former Formula 1 racers Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell as well as DTM driver Edoardo Mortara. Latest from the Cartama Oval Newly formed Sevilla CC, as yet lacking a home ground, descended on the Costa del Sol on Saturday for a quiet night in Torremolinos (well, that was their story anyway) before moving on to the New Cartama Oval on Sunday for their inaugural match, which proved to be hugely enjoyable and a great advertisement for the game of cricket. Batting first in this 35 overs per side match Sevilla made a decent start, reaching 25 by the end of the first 4 overs. Another 4 overs and Sevilla were reeling,

This is going to be an amazing road once it links up with the unfinished section out towards the airport, but currently it has a deserted air with very little traffic on its impressive four-lane highway. e new US Open Champion Rory McIlroy Just two months ago after the ‘choke’ at Augusta National in The Masters, the critics were asking could the kid from Northern Ireland ever come back from the disappointment of throwing away a major. Well Rory answered that and many more questions with his total domination of this year’s US Open, breaking record after record on his way. McIlroy set 12 Open records, finishing with a 16under-par 268. He basked in an outpouring of love on a muggy afternoon from fans who hollered his name at every hole. Rarely has a golfer from Europe been treated to choruses of distinctly American sports chants — “Here we go, Rory, here we go.” Jack Nicklaus, who also won his first major championship when he was 22, a few months older than McIlroy, says McIlroy is special. “I love his moxie, the sort of way he walks, sort of cocksure about himself,” Nicklaus said. “I kind of like that in a guy. You’ve got to have confidence in what you’re doing. I think this kid’s going to have a great career. He’s got all the components; he’s got lots of people rooting for him.” From his first drive on the final day which landed smack centre of the fairway leading to a birdie at the first hole. Rory proved that his golf game is complete.

“If it wasn’t for my mum and dad sacrificing so much, I probably wouldn’t be sitting up here,” McIlroy said as he sat next to the gleaming trophy. The reward for those sacrifices came on the right day. It came on Father’s Day when Gerry Mcllroy was handed the best gift a father could hope for. He got to see his son live out his boyhood dream on one of golf’s grandest stages.

His long, accurate drives found mostly fairways. With a pinpoint iron game, he hit 86 percent of the greens, the most since the United States Golf Association began keeping records. He shored up what used to be a suspect short game and totally dominated the tournament finishing with an eightstroke margin of victory. He's one of only five players to play all four rounds under par, and this

Dani Pedrosa to miss Dutch MotoGP Dani Pedrosa says he is unlikely to return from injury in time for Saturday's Dutch MotoGP at Assen. The Spaniard has missed the last two races after breaking his collarbone in a crash with Marco Simoncelli at the French Grand Prix in May."It will be very difficult for me to make Assen, but I really believe I will be okay for Mugello (1-3 July)," said the Repsol-Honda rider. I want to return as soon as possible, but I want to do the right thing."

Murray eases through after early first round nerves Andy Murray survived a Spanish onslaught under the Centre Court roof to move into the second round of Wimbledon. Messages of support for Murray were everywhere, even on his tennis bag, which carried those selected by his sponsors, Head, from a Facebook campaign designed to provide the Briton with inspiration at Wimbledon.

In a contest John McEnroe described as ‘the perfect opening round match’, Murray came from behind to win comfortably. With rain sweeping across the All England Club

and closing Henman Hill, the British No 1 was left as the only attraction in town as he completed his match 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 with victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Murray had this to say after his match. “It is different with the roof on. It’s only the second match in my life I’ve ever played on an indoor grass court. It does change the conditions. There’s no wind, no sun, no elements to contend with and he was able to put in a lot of huge forehands.” Venus Williams may have wished to dwell on the positives of her first-round result, but the jury was split on her outfit — a 1970sstyle playsuit with a cut-out back and batwing arms,

Mmm, the jury is still out on this outfit

from her own clothing range, EleVen. Glittering discoball earrings and a chunky gold necklace completed the look. “It’s a jumper,” she explained. “Jumpers are very now, as is lace. The shoulders have a lot of

draping, which is also in at the moment. It’s just kind of a trendy dress. ‘It has a focal point of a zipper in the front. The back is a cutout or a peek‑a‑boo. I’m always trying to do something different and fun.”

Fifa vice-president Jack Warner resigns

Shock Tactics David Haye's trainer Adam Booth says Wladimir Klitschko will find it impossible to predict his charge's strategy when they meet on 2nd July. Britain's WBA heavyweight champion Haye faces Ukraine's IBF and WBO title-holder Klitschko in a blockbuster unification showdown in Hamburg. Booth, who has been in Haye's corner for all 27 of his fights since he turned professional in 2002, conceded Klitschko would be "the most dangerous opponent by a country mile". Klitschko, 35, has won 55 of his 58 pro fights, with a remarkable 49 knockouts, and has not lost since 2004. "David's never boxed or sparred with anyone as dangerous as Wladimir Klitschko, it will have to be the performance of David's life," said Booth. "But it's the same the other way round as well – Wladimir Klitschko has not boxed anyone as dangerous as David will be.”

Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has resigned, world football's governing body has confirmed. "As a consequence of Mr Warner's resignation, all ethics committee procedures against him have been closed and the presumption of innocence is maintained," said a Fifa statement. Warner was suspended pending an investigation into bribery allegations. He and fellow Fifa member Mohamed Bin Hammam are alleged to have paid bribes of £600,000 to Caribbean associations.

Fabregas still keen on Barca move Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has admitted the Catalan club are unwilling to pay Arsenal's £35million valuation of their captain Cesc Fabregas, but says the midfielder is doing 'all he can' to join Pep Guardiola's side. Fabregas' wish to join Barca – where he started out as a youth player – is no secret, although the midfielder claimed he was happy at Arsenal just last week. But the Gunners captain, who left Barca at 16, also admitted he dreams of playing for the Nou Camp side and Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood revealed there had been contact with the Catalan club this week, saying Fabregas' desire to return home was 'understandable'.

Villas-Boas, Oh by the way I’m off Andre Villas-Boas has told Porto he is quitting for Chelsea as he prepares to make £26million hitman Falcao his first signing at Stamford Bridge. The 33year-old sent a fax to his employers telling them he is walking away to take over from Carlo Ancelotti in west London. Porto have confirmed his resignation to the Portuguese stock exchange.Villas-Boas is now set for a spectacular return to the club who once employed him as a junior member of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff.
