King Juan Carlos opens new terminal King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia inaugurated Malaga airport's new terminal – T3 – on Monday which started functioning on Tuesday without any hitches. The first plane out was a Spanair flight to Barcelona. During the first 12 hours, 3,700 passengers left on some 30 flights, all of which left on time. The terminal, built at a cost of €1,800 million, makes Malaga one of the top airports in Europe,
which an average of 30 million passengers will eventually use every year. Despite a slight drop in the number of tourists, nearly 13 million passed through Terminals 1 and 2 last year. The next step to improve the airport is the construction of a second
runway, which should be operating by the end of 2011, to increase daily arrivals and departures from 37 to 60 flights. Not only the number of passengers has increased. The T3 has more parking spaces and shops, including the first National
LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL
Geographic shop ever to open in any airport in the world. Malaga is Andalucia's main airport and the fourth largest in Spain as regards number of passengers, handling 62% of all air traffic in the region.

WORLD Tonight I get my Bear back
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
My dog Bundle Bear has been in the vets for ten days due to an abscess on his neck. The poor dog had to be cut from his right ear round to the front of his neck so we decided that, as he is perfectly happy to be with vet Paqui Torrijo and Charro over in Alhaurin el Grande and because he is an 'outside dog', it was better for him to stay in a warm and dry environment until the stitches came out and that's happening today. I have three dogs that have their own little 'house' and compound in the garden complete with beds and what I call their American Kitchen for their dinner but, with the weather as it has been, there was less chance of infection staying in the vets and everybody is looking forward to Bear coming home. If you've just arrived into the area and are looking for a good vet, this one is fabulous – she's in the little street behind the Municipal Market. We have just heard that yet another road is to be dug up in Coin, so no doubt we can look forward to yet more disruption. Plus the A404 between Coin and Alhaurin (the one that goes past Miralmonte) is going to be completely closed today between 8am and 7pm so maybe they're laying the tarmac so we can all get back to normal. Even the residents won't be able to use it so let's hope they've at least got enough milk in for a cup of tea and some food to keep them going for the day!

ETA suspects arrested in Portugal and London The Portuguese police arrested a suspected member of the Basque terrorist group ETA as he was trying to board a flight to Venezuela last Thursday. Andoni Zengotitabengoa, who was carrying a false Mexican passport when he was stopped at Lisbon airport, was later identified as the man who escaped from a house in Obidos, 80 km north of Lisbon, just before a police raid found explosives there last month. His arrest came just days after National Court judge Eloy Velasco accused Venezuela of aiding ETA and the Colombian rebel
group FARC, which he says plotted together to kill Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has dismissed the allegations.

April 18th. There was no identity on the man who was found unconscious in a street in Toulouse and later died in hospital of a heart attack. He had €500 in his pocket and a return ticket to Bayonne. An ETA spokesman has said Anzay was carrying a much larger sum of money. The French authorities are now investigating why the man lay unidentified for so long in the Toulouse morgue.

Spain helps smash major Russian gang The National Police in cooperation with the central drugs and organised crime unit and other regional security forces arrested 24 people in raids against a major Russian mafia gang in Madrid, the Balearic islands and the coastal resorts of Malaga and Marbella over the weekend. The suspects are accused of arms trafficking, money-laundering and contract killings.
Judge Baltasar Garzon led the investigation in Spain with aid from German, US and Russian police.
An Interior Ministry spokesman said the suspects were using front companies to launder money from criminal activities in Russia and other former Soviet countries, and they were also suspected of drug trafficking and tax fraud. National media reported that the group had started operating in Spain 12 years ago.
He began the investigation into the group in 2006. Another 45 people were arrested in a coordinated operation in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy.
If IVA goes up on July 1st as the government plans, the president of Madrid's chamber of commerce, Salvador Santos Campano, warned on Monday that his members will take to the streets to express their “total disagreement” with the increase which, he said, “will destroy our businesses”. He said the chamber was receiving the full support of Madrid Community premier Esperanza Aguirre who had earlier called for a “rebellion” against the increase.

Spain's best known film director, Pedro Almodóvar, has joined intellectuals and other celebrities in a campaign launched on Friday to demand the release of all political prisoners in Cuba. The initiative – called “Orland Zapata Tamayo: I accuse the Cuban government” was signed by more than 1,300 people from different countries the day it was launched. Orlanda Zapata died three weeks ago after a hunger strike lasting more than 80 days. The Cuban authorities have been accused of doing nothing to save his life. Cuban journalist Guillermo Fariñas immediately went on hunger strike to demand the release of 26 jailed dissidents who are in poor health.

Spanish fishing boats ward off pirates Five Spanish fishing boats have repelled attacks by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean since the beginning of the month – three of them on March 5th. Four of them escaped thanks to their crews' sailing skills but private security agents on the Basque boat Txori Argi used their weapons to repel the pirates on Sunday. Its captain, Santi Gamboa, said: “Security is tighter now than last year
and just four shots into the air is enough to send the pirates on their way.” The government agreed to allow Spanish fishing boats to carry private security agents late last year. However, Environment Minister
Elena Espinosa, who also has the Marine portfolio, told reporters on her arrival in Brussels for a conference that it was necessary to continue reinforcing security measures now that the monsoon season was over and more pirate attacks
could be expected. She said she understood shipowners' fears but warned that piracy would not be eliminated until international efforts brought about a change of the situation in Somalia. “And that won't happen overnight,” she said.
Alakrana was held by the pirates for more than a month last year.

The latest figures available – for 2008 – show that there were 49,000 accidents in cities, in which 634 were killed and more than 5,400 were injured. The proposals include drawing up maps of the black spots, that is, where the highest number of accidents take place, creating safe pathways near

accidents on the highways dropped 53%, as opposed to 31% in cities. The Authority's proposals will be tested in pilot schemes to be implemented later this year in Gijón, Granada, Córdoba, Avila, Guadalajara, Mérida, Fuenlabrada, Puertollano, Cudillero and La Laguna.

people had died in eight accidents involving the plane. The tragic crash turned into a national scandal after it was discovered that Army doctors had wrongly identified 22 bodies which had to be exhumed and reburied after a correct identification.
WHO DARES TO SAY HE IS PAYING THE RATES HE SHOULD? OR: THE DISASTER AT THE CATASTRO Of late, we at Todoserv are seeing the consequences of the financial difficulties all the local councils are having: almost all of them are having a very close look at the rates we are (should) be paying. No problem there. But the way they go about it definitely is a problem We definitely haven´t seen them all, but here follows a small list of errors we have seen of late. Keep in mind that none of the examples we give below have occurred only once. All of them are more or less frequent. Here goes: Plots which appear under the wrong owners’ names, plots with wrong measurements, houses which don´t appear on the maps, people paying too high rates -or too low, people who are paying rates for properties which they never owned, people that pay rates for their house but don´t own in the registry the plot it’s built on, people who are paying rates for gigantic plots but who own in reality a normal sized plot, pools that suddenly are registered to a neighbour, the access to one’s house that is “given” to the neighbour, whole houses which suddenly belong to somebody else, plot boundaries cutting straight through a house... we could go on with the list and believe it or not, we are not exaggerating, rather the contrary.
These errors all appear in the “catastro” which is a secondary land registry and which main use is to calculate the rates. This registry always has been a mess at best, with over half of all properties showing errors, but now (over the last 18 months) various government departments have -each for a different reason- started to “clean it up”. The result of this highly necessary cleaning operation is that now the error percentage has soared to a baffling 75% to 80%. And if you want your property to be registered correctly, you have really no other option than to put it right yourself. Depending on which error, the process of putting things right will be easier or more complicated. First you will need to know if (highly likely) the registry has done something funny with your property. We at Todoserv offer absolutely free advice on this subject, just show us your latest rates bill, your “escritura” (deeds) or, if you haven´t got those handy, just
952 45 12 69
come to the offices of Todoserv and show us where your property is located on one of our aerial pictures.
at Todoserv we will check in a matter of minutes whether or not you have got something to worry about.
All this has become more necessary because the local councils are having teams of inspectors inspecting the countryside in order to get people to pay the rates they should. They will leave a notice somewhere in or about your property, on the gate, the fence, at your neighbours. The probability that you don´t receive it is therefore quite high. And this makes you liable for a fine. Although this fine is hardly ever imposed, the result of not appearing within the allotted time with the required information, will be that the authorities will register your property they think it is and calculate -whether you know it or not- the rates. Chances are that you would be collecting in that case rate payments that you don´t even know about. Not knowing is not considered a valid excuse: late payment fines and interest would be unavoidable. Not knowing should not be necessary:
Just call our office for an absolutely free diagnosis of your property. You don´t have to take any chances.

Miguel Delibes, considered the greatest Spanish writer of the 20th century, died last Friday at his home in Valladolid. He was 89. Delibes rarely left Valladolid, the capital of Castilla-La Mancha which was once known as Old Castille, where the purest Spanish was spoken. As a result, Delibes wrote in a non-flowery Spanish and his main passions – the Castillian countryside and its fauna and flora and hunting – figured largely in his novels, usually from
the perspective of a person living in a town who does not want to lose contact with his roots in the countryside. He was made a member of Spanish Royal Academy in 1975. He received his first literary award, the Nadal prize, in 1948, followed by the Critics Award in 1953, the Prince of Asturias Award in 1982, and the most
prestigious of all, the Cervantes Award in 1991. Films based on his books won several international awards. He was deeply affected by the death of his wife in 1974 and he had suffered recurring bouts of colon cancer since 1998. Despite the fact that he gave up writing in the last decade of his life, his funeral was attended by
members of the government and celebrities from all walks of life. Valladolid City Council declared three days of morning and thousands of people waited outside the Cathedral during his funeral service, bursting into spontaneous applause as the funeral cortège passed by.
Al Qaeda justifies kidnapping A communiqué issued by the Al Qaeda in North Africa (AQMI) said the kidnapping of three Spanish aid workers – one of whom was released last week – was justified because Spain is an ally of NATO and the United States “in the war against Islam and the Muslims which does not distinguish between
civilians and soldiers, because it also kills children, women and old people.” The communication went on: “While innocent Muslims are suffering, the Spanish will never be in peace”. Another justification for the kidnapping was that Spain governs in “Al Andalus, which is a land of Muslims”.

BARCELONA. The Provincial Court has reduced the sentence of a woman who was jailed last year for taking small amounts of hashish and cocaine to her son in prison “because he didn't look well”. The court reduced the original sentence of nine years to one and a half because “it was difficult for a woman to deny drugs to her addicted son”.

The Guardia Urbana finally discovered last week who had been pouring acid into the slots on parking meters in several streets in the city during the last 18 months, when they caught a 67-year-old man in the act. He will have now have to pay for the 21 parking meters he damaged, which the authorities said amounted to several thousand euros.

CATALONIA. Residents of several towns in the region have decided to protest against the poor service from the Endesa electricity company during the recent bad weather. Thousands were left in the dark for days in some cases. Endesa blames the weather but consumers blame poor maintenance. Some towns have refused to pay their public lighting bills until they recieve compensation.
MADRID. As a result of reciprocal agreements with non-EU countries, mainly in South America and Africa, more than three million foreigners will be able to vote in next year's local elections. That's almost triple the number who were eligible to vote in 2007. Only Venezuela has decided not to let its nationals vote here or Spaniards to vote there.

Kidnapped boy found safe and sound The British High Commissioner in Islamabad, Adam Thompson, confirmed on Tuesday that the five-year-old British boy who was kidnapped in Pakistan has been found safe and well. Sahil Saeed, from Oldham, had been snatched from his grandmother's house in Jhelum by armed robbers on March 3rd. The boy had been visiting relatives with his father, Raja Saeed, who had returned to the UK last week against the wishes of Pakistan's police. There has been speculation in
Pakistan that he had returned to arrange ransom money. When asked whether Sahil's father had paid £100,000 to the kidnappers, as had reportedly been demanded, Punjab province law minister Rana Sanaullah said the money had been paid "not in Britain, but in another
country". He added: "An international gang was involved in the kidnapping, including nationals of other countries". Sahil was taken when robbers broke into his grandmother's house. Up to 10 family members inside the house were said to have been beaten by the intruders during a six-hour
ordeal. The robbers then took items believed to be jewellery and money and fled with the boy. Since then, several men - including a taxi driver have been arrested and four police officers have been suspended for not initially responding to the family's emergency call.

FBI investigates Mexico deaths
Two charged over cartoon plot
On Saturday, Lesley Enrique - a US citizen working at the Juarez consulate - her American husband, Arthur Redelf, and Jorge Alberto Sarcido - the Mexican husband of another consular employee - were shot dead in two separate incidents.
They were refused bail after detectives told the court they were not convinced their identities were authentic. Ali Charaf Damache, 44, was charged with sending a menacing text message on January 9th. Originally from Algeria, he has been living in the Irish Republic for about ten years.
A Waterford court has charged two men in connection with an Several FBI agents have been sent to the Mexican border city of investigation into alleged threats to kill Swedish cartoonist Lars Ciudad Juarez to investigate the deaths of three US citizens. Vilks who depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog.
Enrique, 35, who was pregnant, and her 34-yearold husband were killed in a hail of bullets as they drove their car towards the US side of the border. Their oneyear-old baby was found unharmed in the back seat. In the second attack, gunmen opened fire on the car belonging to Jorge Alberto Sarcido, killing him and wounding his two
children. Mexico has blamed the killings on a gang linked to a drugs cartel, but investigators have said it is too early to tell if those killed were deliberately targeted. The US state department said the killings underscored the "severe and significant danger" Mexico represents to the United States. Mexico
is battling a drug war that has killed some 18,000 people since 2006 - more than 2,600 in Ciudad Juarez last year alone. Ciudad Juarez is a major flashpoint in the battle between Mexican drug gangs over trafficking routes to the US.

British expats lose pension freeze appeal The European Court of Human rights ruled on Tuesday against the 13 expatriates who have been battling for the right to receive the index-linked rises on their state pensions which would have brought them into line with UK-based pensioners. This means that more than half a million UK pensioners living overseas will continue to have their pensions frozen. Pensioners who moved to countries such as Australia
and Canada only receive the level of pension paid at retirement - which might be only £6 per week. The court rejected their appeal by an 11 to 6 majority. The decision has saved at least
£500m a year for the government, which said that its first responsibility was with pensioners living in the UK. The expatriate pensioners have been fighting "tooth and nail"
against the UK government in an eightyear court battle. The campaigners argue that they paid into the pensions system when they were working and are entitled to
the same benefits as those who remained in the UK. For the oldest overseas pensioners, who retired in the early 1970s, the pension can be as low as £6 a week. Those who retired
in the early 1980s are left on about £30 a week, and those who retired in the early 1990s get about £50 a week. The current basic state pension is £95.25 a week.

The "Daffs Watch" appeal set up by tourism chiefs in Cumbria is encouraging people to use social networking siteTwitter to show where they are if they spot a blooming daffodil in the Lake District . The daffodils, made famous by William Wordsworth, are more than a month late this year following the cold winter. Eric Robson, Chairman of Cumbria Tourism, said: "It's virtually unheard of not to have seen a single daffodil in the Lake
District by the middle of March. It's an industry of its own with visitors coming here just to see them by the lakesides. The upside is that because they are late, it means they should be out and looking their best for the Easter holidays." One of the most
famous places to see daffodils in Cumbria is Dora's Field in Rydal near Ambleside, named after Wordsworth's daughter Dora, who died in 1847. William Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount for 37 years until his death in April 1850.
Hollywood to make turkey tale movie Movie company Furst Films plans to turn into a movie the story of a woman who was stranded by snow for a month after she popped out to buy a Christmas turkey. The company - whose movies include The Matador, The Cooler and The Girl In The Park - has offered £40,000 for the rights to the story of Kay Ure, who lives with husband John in Cape Wrath, in the extreme north west of Scotland. Mrs
Ure set out on December 19th to go to Inverness to buy festive food, but was unable to return home for 30 days. She had to spend Christmas in a friend's caravan, while her husband had the company of their six dogs, and two walkers who had been
passing-by. Mr Ure said the offer from Furst had come as a complete surprise. He said he and his wife had thought it was a joke until they Googled the company and found it has won several Golden Globes. He stressed the film would be as much about the couple's
lifestyle - they have no mains electricity and are forced to rely on a generator - as it was about poultry. He said he hoped the film would help bring some business to their small cafe, which is one of Britain's most remote eateries.
World's shortest man dies
Fears over Asian 'slave brides'
ROME. The world's shortest man, He Pingping, who was just 74.6cm tall, died in Rome on Saturday after spending two weeks in hospital with a chest complaint. . He was 21. He was born in 1988 in Wulanchabu, China, with a form of primordial dwarfism. Mr Pingping was in Rome to take part in the filming of The Record Show TV programme.
BRITAIN. Hundreds of women who came from South Asia to marry say they have been treated as domestic slaves by their in-laws. More than 500 who applied for residence in 2008-09 after their marriages broke down were deported because they could not prove abuse had taken place. Police suspect the incidents are not reported because of family pressure and fear of reprisals.
Power cut blacks Insemination out country trips banned CHILE. The failure of a key transformer plunged the quake-hit country into an hour-long darkness on Sunday, stretching 2,000km and affecting up to 90% of the population. In Santiago thousands were evacuated from the Metro and the failure affected a benefit concert for quake victims. President Sebastian Pinero said it will cost about $30 billion to rebuild the country.
TURKEY. A new law makes it a criminal offence for a woman to go abroad and get pregnant via artificial insemination. The practice is illegal in Turkey so women went overseas to seek sperm donors. Now they face punishment of one to three years in prison. Doctors and lawyers are trying to find out how the government plans to enforce the law.

Blue fin tuna to be Thieves target Viagra tablets bred in captivity The construction of the world's first blue fin tuna breeding centre will begin shortly at Puerto Santa Maria in Cadiz province. It will cover an area of 27,000 m2 where 500,000 tuna will eventually be bred. They will then be sent to other centres around the world for fattening up. However, only about 60 breeding pairs will occupy the huge tanks after living out at sea in huge cages for two
months until they become accustomed to human contact, which they have never experienced before. The Futuna Blue company designed the project to guarantee a supply of the blue fin tuna which is in serious danger of extinction from overfishing.

Expats in Coín, Alhaurin el Grande, Alhaurin de la Torre, Cartama, Alora, Torremolinos and several other towns are in the process of forming a political party for foreigners to run in the local elections in May 2011. The aim of the party, which will be politically neutral, is to give expats a voice at the local level and later with the Junta de Andalucia in Seville. All EU citizens are entitled to vote in the local elections but they must register a year beforehand
to be able to do so. The registration form is available on request at town halls or foreigners departments in those towns that have them and should be accompanied by a copy of the empadronamiento and NIE or passport.
Everyone is urged to register at their local town halls, not only to be able to vote, but because ayuntamientos receive financing from the Junta according to the number of residents registered. This money goes to maintaining or extending
services for the whole community so everyone benefits in the long run. People are also being asked to show their empadronamientos when applying for connection to public utilities.
Woman stabbed in Benalmadena A woman was stabbed twice in the leg and in the back and drenched in petrol at 8.15 am on Tuesday morning outside Sunset Beach apartments in Benalmadena. The Spanish woman, from Estacion de Cartama, was allegedly attacked by her estranged partner. He followed her to her work place on his motorbike and stabbed her in the back and in the leg. The woman was taken to hospital and police have arrested a man, aged 46, who was taken to
Torremolinos station.

Police say the attacker had poured petrol over his victim, intending to set fire to her. It is understood that the man had been served with a restraining order last
August and that he was being sought by police after breaching its terms. Luckily, the woman’s work colleagues and people from the apartments spotted the attack and rushed to the rescue. Her rescuers manhandled her attacker away and called the police.

ALHAURIN EL GRANDE. The Local Police have said that some 5,700 metres of copper electricity cables were stolen in the town last week alone. The Town Hall has said the thieves avoid attracting attention by wearing officiallooking uniforms to work in broad daylight. A spokesman has asked people to report all street works involving cables so they can be checked out.
ANDALUCIA. The typical Moroccan immigrant of the 20,00 or so who arrived at the beginning of the decade was a male aged between 30 and 50. GUADALHORCE VALLEY. Although little construction is going on at present, a report presented in Coín by the Provincial Government's environment department shows that past building in the country has seriously polluted the rivers in the area. Only four of the Guadalhorce's 13 municipalities - Alozaina, Tolox, Yunquera and Alhaurín de la Torre – have water purification plants.
DOÑANA. The European Parliament has admitted a complaint by the so-called Club Doñana of environmentalists, who want the European Commission to investigate the problems affecting the national park. These include the drying up of the aquifer, the deaths of several Iberian lynxes in the breeding programme and urban pressure from towns on the edge of the park.

A life revisited
US view on Spain's human rights
T
T
he more I read about the Civil War, the more I get the feeling that I was actually around at that time and – given that I was born a few years after it ended – probably did not survive it.
he US State Department’s annual country-by-country survey on human rights, which was released last Thursday, included some surprising revelations about conditions in Spain. For example, did you know that law enforcement authorities in Andalucia have the most complaints of torture, after Basque police officers, filed by citizens? Or how about the discrimination accusations from Muslim groups, which maintain that local governments have made it more difficult for them to obtain permits to build mosques in some neighbourhoods? Then there is the case of 39 doctors who resigned last April from the only hospital in Ibiza because they refused to go along with a Balearic government rule insisting they had to speak Catalan while attending patients?
I
've just finished reading the threevolume autobiography of Arturo Barea - highly recommended - who was born into a poor family in Madrid in 1897 but went to live with his mother's rich sister and her husband when his father died not long after his birth. His mother worked as a washerwoman and his two brothers and a sister were placed in a boarding school for poor children.
A
rturo was luckier. He won a scholarship to a good Catholic school for rich kids which took a few bright poor children every year. In the first volume, Barea describes that childhood and his visits to poor and rich relatives in small towns outside Madrid. It's this that strikes a chord. He's talking about the first decade of the last century but the houses of poor people that he describes were just like the ones I saw here in Cadiz and Huelva in the 1960s tiny houses with earth floors and hardly any furniture – and most poor people were lucky to get to eat meat a couple of times a year. Their staple diet was chickpea stew. By the 1960s, things had improved slightly - they were still eating an awful lot of chickpea stew but they got to eat meat a couple of times a month. Working hours were still long. A 12-hour day was normal for Arturo when he started work. In the sixties, most men had to hold down at least two jobs, three if they could manage it, if they wanted to give their families little luxuries like TV sets.
B
area describes how he started work in a bank, a position he could not have aspired to without strings being pulled by a friend of his uncle. Barea was taken on as a “learner” apprentices who did not receive any pay for a year until they were selected for a “proper” job. However, most of the 50 learners who started at the bank at the same time as Barea were fired. Thousands of young men joined banks and offices as learners every year, taking jobs away from grown men. There was also increasing competition from young women, when the bosses realised they could employ them for 70 pesetas a month instead of forking out double or treble that for a man.
D
espite being a “bourgeois” clerk, Barea joined the Socialist General Workers Union (UGT) and during the years of the Second Republic actually organised the UGT's clerical branch.
T
he second volume is mainly about his years in the Army in Morocco where Franco was carving out a reputation for himself. Barea, who ended up in exile in London and was no fan of Franco's, describes how most of the soldiers – both in the regular army and
Arturo Barea.
the Foreign Legion – would follow him to hell and back if need be.
T
he third volume – The Clash – opens just before the start of the Civil War. Barea stayed in Madrid and ended up censoring foreign journalists – making sure they said nothing bad or negative about life on the Republican side. After the government left Madrid for Valencia in November 1936, Barea ended up working on the radio and became famous as the “Unknown Voice of Madrid” who tried to give people in other countries an idea of how hellish life was in the capital under the constant bombing and shelling from the Nationalist side, which was just a stone's throw away from the city centre.
H
is support for the Republic was unflinching: “This was war, civil war and revolution”, he writes. “It could not finish until the country had been transformed into a Fascist or into a Socialist state.” He chose the latter: “Either a Socialist revolution would win or I would be among the vanquished.”
B
ut he had his doubts. Referring to the militia who were roaming the streets hunting down “fascists”, he writes: “If revolution meant the right to kill with impunity – where would we end? The revolution, Spain's hope, would turn into the brutal orgy of a brutal minority,”
H
e fell foul of the militia on more than one occasion because he looked like a bourgeois, but he was saved by his UGT card. But nothing could save him after he fell in love with Ilsa, an Austrian journalist who worked with him. Someone started a rumour that she was a Trotskyist, who were hated by the Communists, Socialists and Anarchists. To save her life and his own sanity, the couple escaped to France a few months before the war ended, and moved on to England just before WWII broke out. He never went back to Spain before his death on December 24th, 1957.
T
he report’s disclosures demonstrate that Spain still has a long way to go to stamp out such abuse, harassment and discriminatory policies. It is surprising that the mainstay press didn’t dedicate space to the US report. The few dailies that did briefly focused on the more positive observations outlined in the survey, such as the non-existence of government internet regulation in Spain. But the document did reveal that Spanish authorities regularly “monitored web sites for material containing hate speech and advocating anti-Semitism.” However there were no reports that the government tapped into email or internet chat rooms.
R
eading the voluminous report, I found out about a lot of other things that have happened in this country over the past two years that I never saw reported in the press, had completely forgotten about, or just dumbly overlooked. One item that caught my eye was an incident that occurred in January 2009. An AfricanAmerican civilian crew member of a US Navy vessel was assaulted by two individuals who said they were undercover police officers but had not initially identified themselves when they stopped him in the street. “The crew member was pinned to the ground and his clothing torn. Witnesses reported that one of the officers drew a handgun and pointed it at the head of the crew member when fellow crew members attempted to assist him in what they believed to be a mugging,” the report states. After they identified themselves as police officers, they said they had suspected him to be involved in a drug deal - nonetheless no narcotics were found on his person. The crew man received 10 stitches in his eyebrow. The report didn’t say where the incident took place.
A
nd then there were several incidents involving the Jewish community. While the State Department acknowledged that violence against Jewish people was rare, there were a string of anti-Semitic episodes. On May 5th, three men harassed Israel’s
ambassador to Spain, Raphael Schutz, as he walked home from a sporting event in Madrid. A similar affair took place in August when a group of skinheads, shouting "Heil Hitler" confronted a visiting group of Israelis. “The skinheads spat in the tour guide's face and threatened to throw stones at the group, while making gestures of cutting each other's throats. No charges were filed,” the report states. There were also several incidents of anti-Semitic and antiCatholic graffiti appearing on the walls of synagogues and churches. In Barcelona, vandals last summer sprayed messages on 20 Catholic churches. One message read: "The only church that gives light is the one that is on fire." Not only did Muslims and Jews face “bureaucratic problems” in trying to build their places of worships in Spanish towns and cities, Protestant federations also encountered the building-permit process “difficult and lengthy”, especially for sites in urban centres.
A
llegations of the mistreatment of foreigners and migrants were a big focus of the report. In March the UN office on Drugs and Crime put Spain on the top of a list of destinations where women and girls as young as 16 years old were trafficked from Latin America, Eastern Europe and Nigeria for sexual exploitation. “There were also reports of trafficking of both men and women for the purpose of forced labour primarily in agriculture, construction, and domestic employment,” the State Department said.
“
Migrant women and children from Romania and Bulgaria remained particularly vulnerable to labour exploitation.” Some children were also being brought in to engage in forced begging.
I
t isn’t much to ask parents to take it upon themselves to instruct their children that more tolerance is needed to eradicate prejudices and the discriminatory acts that are becoming more common in our country. Despite the ongoing economic problems, Spain fares high in having the best civil guarantees in the world. Nevertheless, it is shaming, as well as sad, that incidents such as the ones described in the human rights report continue to exist.

by email Philip Crawford has made an error in his computation of rainfall, when he tells us that 37 litres per square metre, in one hour, is equivalent to 47,25 mm per sq.metre rain, also in one hour. The correct value is exactly 37mm! Let me prove it to readers: By definition 1 m = 100cm, 1m2 = 1m x 1m ; or 100cm x 100cm = 10.000cm2, one litre (l) is 1000 cubic centimetres (cm3). To make
coputing easy we assume rainfall to be 10 l/m2, or 10.000cm3 per 10.000cm2, when we divide 10.000cm3 by 10.000cm2 we get 1cm ,which is 10mm! or: 37l =37.000 cm3, one square metre remains 10.000cm2, and by simple arithemetics:37.000cm3 divided by 10.000cm2 we get exactly 37mm!!So, if they say 37 litres per square metre you just exchange litres to millimetres!

By email I regularly read your paper and think you cover some interesting and relevant subjects. However, all of my friends who read your paper and myself think that Muriel Pilkington is one of the most obnoxious writers we have come across in any paper. Her blinkered right wing view of the world is surely not reflective of any local outlook so it's a bit rich calling her column the Local Voice. It may be her own vociferous and venomous voice but certainly not many others. If she lived in Britain, no doubt she would be a vocal BNP supporter. Muriel Pilkington replies: If you read my column you should
know that I hate nationalists of any ilk. I voted twice in Britain for Harold Wilson - before going to Venezuela where I did a lot of work with the political prisoners (all guerrilla fighters) for Amnesty International. Strangely enough, my revolutionary friends there, who were real revolutionaries not armchair ones, kept tellimg me I was an anarchist which, in fact, is the only political current I've ever really sympathised with Kropotkin's pacifist version, that is. Since I started writing my column in February 2004, I've had about 5 or 6 letters like yours. On the other hand, dozens of people have told me how much they like it.
Taxing matters! Re: very helpful letter from David Binder about a letter sent in error by the HM Revenue and Customs (not Inland Revenue). Unfortunately he said, he “preferred to pay his tax here as it is cheaper”. Where one pays tax is laid down by law, one cannot choose. If a person is in Spain for a total of 183 days in any tax year they are tax resident, whether they have a residencia registration or not.
Tax on Government employee pensions (police officers, army officers etc) is taxed at source. Income from rental property in the UK is taxed in the UK - all other income, including private pensions, is taxed in Spain. No choice. For UK bank or building society interest, where the entity will not pay gross interest, 20% as basic rate of tax is stopped. 8% can be reclaimed but the UK tax man keeps 12%. This can be offset against tax liabilities in Spain. If you do pay tax in Spain, then the 12% is lost.
Coin and hurling them under my pillow. I had to stash them away as the cat was playing with them and I was worried that the dog might think that they suited him better! This hideaway is helpful for times when you feel queasy as I know my husband loves me, but I really think it would be pushing love to its extreme if he had to go searching for teeth inadvertently flushed down the loo into the soak away! And how many conversations do you start with friends who ring early morning with “just a minute, I’ll have to put my teeth in”. See, Grandma lives!! Whatever happened to growing old gracefully? The boobs have definitely taken a vacation south, and for me to return to my younger svelte figure, well that would only happen if I had been dead for 6 months. And as for the varicose veins, well gnarled oaks look young by comparison. I creak when I move - star jumps and jogging are a definite no no, and

When do we become OLD? Is it when our bodies start to show the effects of ageing or is it when our brains start closing down and we start forgetting. There are individuals out there who we would say were “born old”, yet others never “grow up” I know that me Mam at 84 has just regained her youth by having knee replacements and I never know where she is when I ring her up. I so hope to emulate my mother and be positive about the process of maturing but it appears to have hit me with a sledgehammer!! For me I think that it started when I had teeth out. Suddenly I have this invasive torture device of metal and plastic squatting in my mouth insinuating its bits behind my gums and wrapping itself behind my teeth. I am Grandma Carter reborn, and when I talk they have a mind of their own and hold a completely different conversation to what I am trying to say. They refuse to stay put at night and I often wake ripping them out of my mouth
Stargazing
I do need detailed maps of where the toilets are if making journeys. Foods that in my younger days I blissfully devoured now cause nights of heartburn and indigestion, with the most exciting thing on my bedside table being a packet of Rennies. How many of you have heard the Tom Rush “Remember” song on You Tube? It is definitely one worth listening to and yes, the title says it all. I am sure that when my brain returns from wherever I left it everything will be fine and life will return to normal. What, may you ask, has caused this rant, this total loss of youth and brought about so much negativity. Well I am about to have a birthday and it is one that in the words of the song “I should act my shoe size instead of my age”. I do not know how I got to be this age, I suppose the positive is that I am still here and can enjoy the day but I still dread the end of March when I turn 60 and become A PENSIONER!
Now I can’t guarantee that it will stop raining but I can tell you that after Saturday the days will become longer than the nights and we can celebrate the Spring or Vernal Equinox. The Earth is not standing straight up on its poles but instead is tilted over by 23 ½ ° and it is this tilt that gives us our seasons. In winter the north pole of the Earth is pointed away from the Sun so the Sun’s rays are weaker making it colder and also the days are short and the nights are long. In summer the north pole is pointed towards the Sun so we have long warm days and short nights. So twice a year there is a point half way between winter and summer when the Earth is exactly equal day and night. March 20th marks the Spring equinox while September 22nd marks the Autumn equinox. On the equinox the Sun is directly above the Earth’s equator where it rises at 6 am and sets at 6 pm. During the equinox, the length of night and day across the world is nearly, but not entirely, equal. This is because the day is slightly longer in places that are further away from the equator, and so the sun takes longer to rise and set in these locations. Furthermore, away from the equator the Sun does not set straight down - it moves in a horizontal direction. So on the March equinox, the length of daylight is about 12 hours and eight to nine minutes in areas that are about 30 degrees north or south of the equator, while areas that are 60 degrees north or south of the equator observe daylight for about 12 hours and 16 minutes. In ancient times the Spring equinox
was such an important date that Easter is calculated from here. The old Julian calendar was so far out of synch that in 1582 Pope Gregory adopted a new Gregorian calendar that we use today so that Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the equinox. The full moon following this year’s equinox occurs on Tuesday March 30th so the following Sunday April 4th will be Easter. Simples!
The ISS There will be two very good sightings of the ISS this weekend on Saturday 20th at 20.39 and Monday 22nd at 19.53 both times coming from the North West and passing almost directly overhead.

Community U3A at the Yeguada Age Care The Arroyo Welfare & Social Club, Arroyo de la Miel, presented a cheque for €1,000 raised by its members to help with the work of the Age Care Association. The cheque was handed over by the treasurer, Jean Valendan. A group from U3A learned about the history of the beautiful Andalucian horse on a recent trip to Yeguada de la Cartuja. The farm is is part of the national Spanish heritage and is a key part of preserving the genetic heritage that is the lineage of the Andalucian horse, Cartuja. It is located in Hierro del Bocado just outside of Jerez de la Frontera and carries on the traditions started by the Cartuja monastery which is just down the road. Since its foundation in the Fifteenth century, the Cartuja monastery has become the cornerstone of
Jerez horse breeding. While there, members were given a tour of the facilities and an explanation of all the steps used for the successful breeding of these beautiful horses in this modern modern facility built on an old spanish farm. A show of the two disciplines taught there carriage and dressage followed the tour. This was then followed by sherry tasting. The U3A has many social activities each year along with its offering of courses. For more info please visit our web site www.u3a.es

Vet in a van unveiling
David
The CHAIN animal charity is celebrating its first birthday and the shop on the ground floor of the La Trocha Commercial Centre in Coin will be having an open day today (Wednesday) to let everybody know what they have been doing with your donations. An amazing €34,000 has been raised, they have neutered over 1000 cats and dogs and have supported over 130 charitable animal causes since they started. The big achievement will be the public unveiling of the vet-in-a van which has been fitted out as a mobile veterinary hospital- CHAIN will work with local vet Wayne Hockenhull to step up the charitable neutering programme of stray and abandoned animals to help control the stray population. Drinks and nibbles will be served.

Puppy contracts If you are buying a puppy or kitten an animal is seen as a chattel, which is an item of property. There are various laws but the most important law is Consumer Law which applies to goods which are bought and sold. All goods which are purchased are required by law to be sold as ‘fit’ for the purpose. A pup which seems healthy but then goes on to develop a debilitating inherited health problem as a result of irresponsible breeding cannot be said to be fit for the purpose. If you were to buy a new fridge or television and something went wrong with it shortly after you had bought it, you would

expect a replacement or a refund. But that isn’t acceptable once you have given your heart to a pup. Repair is a much better option. Therefore you should consider a simple puppy contract. If the breeder has not done all the required health checks to give you a healthy pup then under Consumer Law he would be liable for any vets fees linked to the condition. If I was buying a puppy I would ask my lawyer to make a contract for my new member of the family. Most illnesses will occur in the first three years of a dog’s life, these in my opinion are the responsibility of the breeder to pay for.

Malaga´s drive to be selected as European Capital of Culture continues as the city builds on its cultural diversity designed to spark debate and provide entertainment that embraces all art forms.
A
nd it has now added a new theatre to offer an expanded programme of events that complement the activities found at the cultural hub of the city, the Cervantes Theatre. The Echegaray Theatre is a very short stroll from the Cathedral in the heart of the old town.
T
his beautiful building was constructed 77 years ago to house a cinema and it was designed by Manuel Rivera Vera, who also designed the Town Hall and other important buildings in the city.
I
n 2001 came the last picture show - its doors were closed and the once beautiful edifice began to deteriorate. But the town hall decided to embark on an ambitious programme of
reform which would bring the building back into use by preserving its important historical character, but marrying it with a contemporary feel suited to a modern city.
A
rchitect Francisco PeĂąalosa Iznzquiza was tasked with reforming the building - he died in August 2008 but a team of other architects carried on his work and the theatre was inaugurated five months ago. Its facade has been restored with original materials and gleams palely in the elegant Calle Echegaray. The vestibule and upper landing reflect the glamour of a building designed in the 1930s with the intricate decoration from that time faithfully restored, and on the stairwells and walls are fitted
the original windows.

nside, the auditorium has been fashioned in a contemporary, studio style manner, using inset spots and cherry woods, and a stage at audience level, which creates an intimacy perfect for its programme of activities, aimed at both adults and children. There are sophisticated acts designed draw in a mature audience. The lively and extensive programme aimed at the young and their parents has already shown musical theatre productions based on Alice in Wonderland and Pinnochio, and future shows include marionettes and clowns, flamenco for the young, an interpretation of Hansel and Gretel and magic shows.
A
nd two weekends ago a mainly Spanish audience defied the weather to see British cabaret / vaudeville act The Tiger Lillies. With Adrian Stout on contrabass, theremin and bowed saw, Adrian Huge on a motley assortment of percussion and the accordian and keening falsetto of Martyn Jacques wearing a bowler hat and the painted face of a clown, it was an evening of death, despair - all done to hugely entertaining jaunty effect.
T
he act is dubbed as "dark cabaret" and appeals to those with a dark sense of humour who laugh out loud as each tale describes a horrible fate- Jacques sounds a bit like Dame Edna Everage, and on other occasions like a gravelly Tom Waits, and the trio have
been around since 1989, receiving a Grammy nomination in 2003 for their album The Gorey End. The crowd loved the set, and called out for their favourites, including Killer and Banging In The Nails, proving yet again just how culturally diverse the Spanish audience is.
T
he theatre does not have a bar - but there is a coffee bar just a few paces away, a wine bar opposite and a gastro-bar a few metres away. Its future programme covers dance and music, including renowned musicians Robert Fripp (guitarist with King Crimson) and flautist and sax player Theo Travis at the end of April. The Salon Varietes Theatre is proud to present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice it is one of the most popular musicals of our time. This light-hearted show is performed with hardly any dialogue and is based on the story of Joseph and his coat of many colours from the book of Genesis in the Bible. The narrator guides you through the story which is told through songs, many of which will be very familiar to you
already, such as Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door and Go Go Go Joseph. Peter Mitchell directs this very colourful show and Peter Height choreographs the energetic dance routines with a crash of drums and a flash of light. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat plays the Salon Varietes from Friday 19th to Sunday 28th March nightly at 8pm (7pm Sunday) with a matinee on Saturday 27th.

Ten times table
The Alan Ayckbourn play "Ten Times Table" is being staged at Sol Andalusi Theatre, Alhaurin De La Torre by The Andalucian Performing Arts Society on Thursday 18th, Friday 19th, and Saturday 20th March. Set in the ballroom of the dilapidated Swan Hotel, a group of local members of the Pendon community are brought together to organise a town pageant based on a lost piece of local history, the massacre of the Pendon Twelve – where the Earl of Dorset crushed an uprising of rebellious workers, led by John Cockle. The committee comprises disparate characters with very
different views of what the pageant should be and what it represents. As the meetings progress, the group becomes ideologically divided with the left-wing side, led by a Marxist Polytechnic teacher, building it up as a political rally. The right-wing side of the committee formulates plans for a violent confrontation in response. But what happens in the end? You’ll have to go and watch the play to find out! Performances start at 8pm and ticket prices are €10 for TAPAS members, and €12 for guests and can be obtained from the Box Office by calling 951 312 886 or 951 247 283.

aspirations of the bottom rungs of the suburban middle class ladder; as he climbs the walls of his blandly furnished prison he dreams of escape from his Tupperware nightmare. Then amidst his bursts of sarcastic wit he realizes salvation is at hand, salvation on a slip road on the A6. Set in the lounge of a dormer bungalow somewhere “oop noorth” this sharp and witty comedy is a fine example of socially observant humour. As with
really good stand up Willy Russell's play has captured the feel of a social situation with pertinent references. The pretensions and mannerisms of the aspiring middle class guests at Dennis's birthday meal have been caught wonderfully. Written in 1979 the play has plenty of period specific expressions and though it has a distinct seventies/eighties feel to it, the humour dates well think Peter Kay waxing lyrical about Spanish

This week’s film in English at the La Trocha Commercial Centre cinema in Coin is Invictus. The film tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely bid to win the 1995 World Cup.
The film is directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela with Matt Damon as François Pienaar, the international rugby player who helped Mandela unite black and white supporters behind the South African rugby team. Delivered with typically stately precision from director Clint Eastwood.

Author Willy is well known, having written such outstanding hits as “Blood Brothers”, “Educating Rita” and “Shirley Valentine” to name but a few. This is the story of Dennis, a 35 year old husband and father of one, who is trapped within the mundane grimness of a 'phase two housing estate'. Dennis is a man drowning in the pretensions and

W
hen I heard the news last week that Corey Haim had passed away, I felt like someone told me one of my old classmates had died. To me he was like a school bud, that went down a wrong path and every now and then he would pop up in some random movie. Haim was one of the best young actors of the 80s and though his limelight faded quite a while ago, his movies will not.
O
ne of my favourite movies of his was “License to Drive” which featured Corey Feldman, that being the second of eight movies they appeared in together. It tells the story of a kid that fails his driving test, but decides to take the car out without permission anyway. This was Heather Graham’s first movie role, and funnily enough both Haim and Feldman were in the process of obtaining their drivers licenses while making the movie. While we’re on the subject of cars, does anyone out there remember “Dream Machine”, when Haim is given a Porsche and it’s just too good to be true?
O
ne of Corey Haim’s lesser known movies, but in my opinion one of his best, is “Silver Bullet”, based on the short story by Stephen King. Everett McGill is very well cast, Haim plays a handicapped kid with a souped up wheelchair who manages to outsmart the local werewolf.
A
nd last but by no means least (or lost) is “The Lost Boys”, one of the best vampire movies of all time. I don’t know where to begin, there are so many brilliant elements in this movie: the dialogue, the effects, the humour and a stellar performance from newcomer Kiefer Sutherland. One of the things that I always remember from this movie was Haim’s laugh, along with him singing a little number in bath tub. The sequel however was a tad clumsy, the only scene that stood out was the mention of “The Goonies” and of course the scene where the “two Corey’s” meet again.
E
ven though in recent years he was not as active, he must not be dismissed as his contribution to the film industry in the 80s was staggering. One of the last times I saw him was in a montage of former child stars at the end of “Dickie Roberts Former Child Star”, where he sings along with Feldman. I am sure Corey Feldman was affected greatly by Haim’s passing, he must feel like he has lost his brother.
E
veryone has mixed feelings regarding “Prayer for the Roller Boys”, I suppose it could be referred to as a cult movie. To be perfectly honest I wouldn’t mind watching it again, to what I remember it was a bit “A Clockwork Orange” meets “Bladerunner” but without the aliens.
“
Dream a Little Dream” was a refreshing change to the normal “two Corey’s” movies, because in this one Feldman is the lead and Haim is the sidekick but he still manages to steal the movie. A strange

If you can’t see where you are going or what the ultimate outcome will be, the only option is to rise above it and hold steadfast to your hopes and dreams. Financial and material areas of your life, including property, may need some instinctive moves on your part to keep a momentum rolling along in the direction that you want it to go. Abundance is on its way, Aries; just keep listening to your instincts and you can’t go wrong. If you are consistent with others and make it clear to them exactly what you are thinking and the finite details of your visions, then you give them the chance to move heaven and earth to get you where you want to be. So go for it, take the risks and chances you know are right for you and be as direct as possible. What have you got to lose – if you don’t ask sometimes, you don’t get. Opportunities on the financial front are likely to come your way by next week. When it comes to getting the greatest personal benefits and rewards, it is a sad thing that most people often resist these opportunities, making excuses, for there is some kind of saboteur within us all. However, a new pathway is opening up before you but part of you wants to walk down the road less travelled and yet the other part of you wants to stay in your comfort zone. Indecision may be draining you of energy, so be bold and make a choice and let that enthusiasm return. It is a choppy sea that you are sailing in at the moment, parts of your life could feel as though they are caving in and yet in other areas you are still on top of things and the horizon is looking positive. Things are happening in a specific way for a reason so if it all seems unconventional then this only serves to break you away from any rut that you are in. Hang onto that word called hope as your dedication to something or someone will bring you treasures soon.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
This week, as the sun has at least shone for a little while, I've decided to give you a recipe for an Arabic fish dish. Called Samkeh Mechwiyeh bi Tarator in Arabic, (fish in Tarator sauce) this is a tasty dish made with any white fish. Next week we will change tack a little and I will start to tell you how to grow a few herbs and start a kitchen garden. There’s nothing as tasty as fresh basil, chives, parsley etc., and then there’s the ones that are more difficult to source in Spain like lemon grass, sorrel and the like - we might even go onto growing sweet potatoes and tell you how to prepare your own sun dried tomatoes to keep you going throught the winter when you can’t grow your own - plus a few fun things to do with the kids with plants.
Samkeh Mechwiyeh bi Tarator Ingredients: ● 1.2kg white flaky fish. ● 2 ripe tomatoes plus one for garnishing ● 4 lemons
And for the tarator sauce: ● 4 cloves garlic ● 100gr sesame seeds ● 2 slices white bread ● Olive oil
Method This is a week of new starts for you with Mars having turned direct in your sign, new solutions to old issues make problems easier to solve. You could be given a second chance to get something right or perhaps you are moving into a similar situation but are loaded with more wisdom. If you go with the flow and embrace the winds of change you could be carried to prosperous shores. A relationship that is important to you will be given another chance to blossom. You are unwilling to compromise this week, normally you are quite adaptable but there is something that you really want and feel compelled to dig your heels in. This is because you are fed up with quick fixes and need there to be a long term solution that sorts out all your future needs therefore, standing your ground you instinctively know, will allow you the chance to reach the top of the tree and stay there comfortably.
● Gut the fish, remove the scales and rinse it. Rub the fish with half a lemon inside and out then season with salt and pepper and put 2 or 3 slices of lemon into the cavity. Grease an oven dish, cover the base with a layer of lemon slices, lay the fish on top. ● Cover the fish with lemon and tomato slices to look like scales and drizzle a small amount of olive oil on the top. Bake in a preheated oven of 200ºC / 400ºF for 30 minutes.
● To make the sauce, put into a bowl the sesame seeds, bread, peeled garlic cloves, a little pinch of salt and pepper and a couple of drops of water, then blend to make a thick sauce. Blend in the juice of two lemons. When the fish is cooked, remove the skin and bone it, arranging the fillets on a plate of salad. Cover the fish with the sauce and serve. You can use the sauce either cold or slightly warmed. Serve with a side bowl of cous cous.

Patience is a virtue, Libra, and it is all about not letting life push you about or make you feel that you have to rush or hurry a process. Your love life could feel as though it is being tested but this also gives you an opportunity rd September 23 - to fix or change something that is not sitting quite right between you. nd

Exercise: Burnout boredom
Pill may lengthen women's lives A study of 46,000 women who took the contraceptive pill over almost 40 years indicates they are less likely to die of cancer and heart disease, a long-term study found. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen said that earlier data from the study had suggested there was an increased risk from using the pill but this disappeared in the longer term. The study was part of
the Royal College of GPs Oral Contraception Study, one of the world's largest investigations into the health effects of the pill. The researchers said the results of the survey related to the first generation of
pills, which had changed over the years and methods of assessing risk were now different. A spokesman said: "It would be wrong for us to say these results directly apply to today's pills, today's women, but
from the few studies that have been done on the newer pills we are finding similar effects as the older pills. So one would suppose that the overall benefit from the newer pills is equally as good."

It's all in Coffee cup? the mind The physical symptoms of flu are bad enough but it becomes much worse after the emotional effects of feeling miserable and tired kick in. Researchers at the University of Sussex found that it is not necessarily the physical symptoms making us feel mentally dreadful and fed up - but rather the brain's response to the infection. A spokesman said: "When we have the flu we feel a bit fatigued, a little bit tired - this sort of constellation of different symptoms is known collectively as 'sickness behaviours'." He said that no matter what the type of infection or illness, the psychological feelings we experience are largely the same - meaning it is unlikely to be related to the infection itself. The researchers tested healthy volunteers by injecting them with a vaccination for typhoid - a side-effect of which is mild flu-like symptoms. They used a functional magnetic resonance imaging
scanner (fMRI) to monitor which parts of the brain were inflamed when performing simple tasks, such as looking at emotional facial expressions. They found that those people who had the biggest reduction in mood to the typhoid vaccination showed the greatest increase in activity in a small brain region called the subgenual cingulate. They said: "What's remarkable about this is that this individual brain region is the area that's most implicated in major depressive illness." The discovery has potentially life-changing implications for patients who suffer serious depression as a side-effect of strong medication. The researchers hope their findings will lead to new techniques which could be used to minimise these side-effects.
Dieters loved the Le Whif chocolate idea- sniff it and enjoy all the taste but without the calories. It sold out as soon as it was launched last year – now there's Le Whif coffee aerosol spray which will give you as much caffeine as a full cup of espresso but without the cup! Sold individually or in packets of three, a “Whiffer” is able to get up to nine hits of espresso from one stick, depending on how hard they inhale. Developed by Professor David Edwards at Harvard University the sticks are fully biodegradable,
organic and containing less than one calorie.
The chocolate ones now come in four flavours: pure chocolate, raspberry chocolate, mint chocolate and coffee. The chocolate powder is packed in sausage-shaped plastic bags which are slipped inside a small plastic aerosol dispenser. Le Whif uses particle engineering to form chocolate in particle sizes that are small enough to become airborne though too large to enter the lungs. Le Whif is expected to go on sale in the UK later this year.
Aiming at losing a large amount of weight by a certain date can induce a real burnout boredom feeling early on in your attempts to get fit. Burnout doesn’t happen overnight but when it does occur you can hit a real slump in your overall fatigue levels and are likely to give up on your good intentions. Basically, burnout happens when you expect too much too soon and you have to balance the excitement with the big picture, according to Rob DeStefano, author of Muscle Medicine. “Even with the smartest, most effective workout programme, you still can’t force your body to become stronger or slimmer any faster than it physiologically can.” It is better, therefore, to start slower instead of rushing in and beginning a full- blown workout after months of very little exercise. Starting with the lowest reps, sets and weights, you can slowly introduce your body to the added effort without exceeding your ability to recover mentally and physically. A classic sign that burnout is on its way is that your excitement starts to fade when you don’t see results straight away. You stop looking forward to the gym and start skipping workouts, but when you do a workout you try and make up for the sessions you missed. The idea is to set mini-goals, especially for the first six months of an exercise programme - this is likely to boost your confidence levels and keep you on track. Focusing on the time spent exercising is far better than concentrating on the total number of pounds lost. If not, boredom and apathy can override your commitment and motivation and you will start to use anything - like work, family, stress even the weather - as an excuse to skip exercise. So if you wish to beat burnout boredom then make a schedule and stick to it for at least five weeks - it will take that long to form exercise as a habit. Go to the gym with a friend as this can be a great motivator – you are likely to stay on track when someone is holding you accountable.

Carnaby Street a golden age
For guys and gals of a certain generation the name Carnaby Street strikes a chord and whisks you back to the swinging '60s, the miniskirt, floral shirts and hipster trousers. This iconic street drew the crowds, and no-one could resist a photograph of themselves stood under the Carnaby Street sign. For half a century it has been at the heart of music and youth culture and most famously, fashion. It´s where generations of designers have launched their careers and where independent boutiques and international
brands have rubbed shoulders.

In the '60s teenage shoppers could find themselves walking alongside The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pete Townsend from The Who or Jimi Hendrix and it became a haven for celebrity spotters in the days when famous musicians could walk around unmolested by the paparazzi. Now 2010 is a year of celebration. Today Carnaby Street remains a lively hive of activity and it is still the shopping street of choice for original, eye-catching fashion. It´s still a must see spot for tourists drawn by its history and by its eclectic shopping experience.
The area is celebrating its 50th birthday by commemorating the sixties, the decade that made it famous and put it firmly on the fashion map. Throughout the year there will be exhibitions, festivals and events designed to showcase its rich heritage in the world of fashion and music. There´s a live music weekend in June and a fashion show in September and you can check out what is
happening on the Carnaby website. Up to April there will be a free seven days a week exhibition featuring clothes, magazine covers, photographs and music from the likes of Hendrix and The Stones, which will illustrate just how the area has developed. So, head for the attic, root out your retro gear, and get ready to revisit your youth.

The tourism ministry said in a statement that the campaign is firmly rooted in the Spanish lifestyle, which attracts more than 50 million visitors each year and that it is particularly aimed at markets that have been traditionally weak, like China, the Middle East and India. The country suffered an 8.7 per cent drop in tourists last year due to the economic slowdown and in 2008 it dropped from second to third in the world s most visited countries.
The Spanish government currently holds the presidency of the European Union and has come up with a brainwave - the way to a tourist s heart is through his stomach. China warns Google China's top internet official has warned that Google will "pay the consequences" if it continues to go against Chinese law. Google announced in January that it would no longer comply with China's internet censorship laws. It warned that it may shut down google.cn because of censorship and a hacking attack on the portal. Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong was speaking at China's annual legislation session. "We need to preserve our nation's interest, our people's interest, we cannot be relaxed with any information that will cause
harm to the stability of our society, to our system, and to the health of our underage young people," he said. "So, of course, what needs to be shut down will be shut down, what needs to be blocked will be blocked." Google began operations in China in 2006 to widespread criticism. While many argued Google was complicit in the censorship imposed by the Chinese government, Google
insisted it was nevertheless serving the public interest even though it was furnishing censored results. Relations between China and Google cooled in
January after what Google described as a sophisticated cyber attack in which the webmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists were targeted.

It is thought that '.com' originally derviced from "commercial".

20 Million Autostadt visitors Just short of its tenth anniversary, Volkswagen's Autostadt theme park in Wolfsburg, Germany has welcomed its 20 millionth visitor. Volkswagen has decided to mark the achievement by donating €20,000 to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Dream debut for Alonso at Ferrari VW Transporter Fernando Alonso powered to victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix, the opening race of is 60 years old the 2010 season, but what a yawn it was, with new rule changes not helping at all. complained of vibration problems with ten laps to go, but was assured by his team that it was probably due to a flat spot on one of the tyres on the MP4-25. In other words, get on with it! He did, to take the final podium spot with Vettel salvaging fourth despite his problems.
Mark Webber’s Red Bull blows out some oil on lap 1 as Alonso goes through in 2nd place
The Spaniard showed his intent from the moment the lights went out, from the second row on the grid, as he dived into Turn 1 through the inside of team mate Felipe Massa to take second place behind Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Renault) who got a great start from pole position. Thereafter Vettel took control of the race, with Alonso keeping him in his sights and within pouncing distance. If the FIA were hoping the rule changes would make for more overtaking and more exciting racing they were sadly mistaken, as the race progressed without much position changing for lap after lap. The new teams were finding it hard in F1 as Karun Chandhok, who had hardly any running all weekend, was the first retirement in the HRT not completing 2 laps. He explained: “It was only my fifth lap of the circuit, I found a bump I didn’t know was there before and it launched me off.” A lap later Virgin Racing’s Lucas di Grassi was in for an early shower as he parked on the side of the circuit with hydraulic issues in the VR01. Bruno Senna, nephew of the late great Ayrton Senna had a forgettable Grand Prix debut with the Hispania Racing team that was clearly unprepared and not ready to race, let alone in Formula1. Senna’s race came to an end on lap 19. “I am not sure what
happened I think it is hydraulics, the data is not telling us anything but this is all useful mileage for us, we need to learn from it,” he said. Lap 13 proved unlucky for rookie Vitaly Petrov (Renault) who had terminal problems on his first pitstop. The first Russian F1 driver explained: “I think we lost one piece of the car, I hit a kerb, the suspension was not totally broken but it was damaged. The car was brilliant to drive though and I was quicker than I thought I would be, it’s disappointing to have to retire but these things happen.” Much was expected of the Sauber team who were touted as a possible surprise package. This prediction remained unfulfilled as Kamui Kobayashi retired on lap 16 with hydraulic problems, and on lap 28 Pedro de la Rosa’s Sauber wheeled into the pit garages signalling the end of the day for the Swiss team. De la Rosa reflected: “The team told me on the radio that we had a hydraulic problem, I had to come in. Life is life, motor racing is like this – until then I was having fun out there. It’s a shame.” Back to the front of the race and the pressure from Alonso paid off in a cruel way for the German Vettel as the Red Bull lost power and on lap 34 Alonso took the lead for the first time in his short Ferrari career.
Helpless Vettel soldiered on with a cracked exhaust, running three seconds off the pace and inevitably on lap 38 Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes) went by into third place. As far as racing goes that was that. Thereafter Massa had no answer, or did not appear to be looking for one, as Alonso took control of proceedings, crossing the line to take victory, punching the air and driving one handed around the Sakhir circuit. Massa took the chequered flag to make it a 1-2 for the Maranello squad and crowning a fantastic weekend for the Scuderia. The Brazilian Massa, who was racing again after his horrific accident in Hungary last year, said of his remarkable comeback: “It’s just fantastic to be here. Thanks to God that I am fine and thanks to everybody that supported me both at home and in every country. I got so many letters, so thank you. It was a strange race. I didn’t have a good start and I lost position to Fernando but then after that it was great. When we changed tyres I was so quick and I caught Fernando right away. But I was saving fuel for the last 30 laps. It was not an easy race but a fantastic result for the team, we have pushed very hard for the last year. It is my best start to a season so I am delighted.” Lewis Hamilton had
Much has been written about the return of Michael Schumacher to F1, but Schumacher was typically realistic about his first comeback race: “It is as good as it could have been. Overtaking here is impossible and that is the action we are going to have with this environment of race strategy. It was good fun. We have to work forward to catch up with what is in front of us.” Schumacher had managed to hold off Jenson Button for quite a distance and took 6th place with Button 7th and the Australian Mark Webber 8th, Schuey’s German team mate Nico Rosberg finished just behind Vettel in 5th place.
This year Volkswagen will celebrate the 60th year of their iconic Transporter van. For those unaware of the Transporter: picture a Hippie in flares and purple sunglasses, see that used van behind him? That’s a Type 2 Transporter. The original T1 was actually released in 1950 but the design was completed in 1949. Its successor, the T2, is actually still in production in Brazil meaning that the VW Transporter range has actually constantly had vans for sale for almost 60 years. The design was improved by Volkswagen’s designers who made it more(!) aerodynamic.
vehicle and not the sort of thing you would expect to see a surfboard sticking out of. Volkswagen California vans are perhaps a closer relation as it is the latest Volkswagen campervan
Everyone knows someone who has owned one of these iconic vehicles, highly visible at all outdoor events, especially the surf crowds in Wales and Devon.
LOST KEYS?
The current version of the Transporter is the T5 which is significantly different to the T1 as you would expect for a model that was released 54 years later. The T5 is a hard working commercial A delighted Fernando Alonso

Perhaps it will be completely ecofriendly and run on sunlight? As long as it has some of the individuality and charm of the original Transporter people will buy it.

Capello offers a role to Beckham Fabian Capello has offered David Beckham a role as part of his backroom staff at this summer’s World Cup finals after he tore his left achilles tendon on Sunday evening, ruling him out for six months and ending his hopes of playing in the tournament.
Benavista Annual Sponsored Another Andalucian derby defeat for Malaga 2 Wood Pairs After all the rain recently, it turned out to be a glorious sunny, Malaga´s continuing lack of consistency was exposed in the breezy day, which helped to make this a great finals day. team’s 1-0 defeat by Almeria. some excellent bowling from the leads, Brenda and Aussie, with Aussie just taking the honours. After building up a lead of 7 – 1, Aussie and Malcolm held on to win 7-5. All the Bowlers in the Benavista sponsored doubles
The Benavista Bowls Club held the annual sponsored two wood pairs competition recently. This competition had been competed for during the winter months, over 8 sessions. After the round-robin stage, there were two top teams from the two groups, Craig Lewis and Bill Davey of Superbowl, Dennis “Aussie” King and Malcolm Greenwood from
Benavista, and Bill Ogden with Ian Anthony, and Brenda Powell with Barry Pemberton, both pairs Benavista. The Superbowl pair played Bill and Ian, and although the score flattered the Superbowl pair, they had to play extremely good drawing bowls to defeat the Benavista pair. The second semi-final, an all Benavista affair, saw
We now had a local derby, Benavista versus Superbowl. Two Captains of their respective clubs, Aussie and Craig, head to head. The Benavista duo played a tight game, not allowing their opponents to settle, and after a hard fought game, ran out winners 7 – 2. Prizes were presented to all the participants by Mr David Rogers, representing the local sponsor.
Report by Neil Marshall & photo by Doreen Fabron.
Malaga are now only four points above the bottom three after failing to improve their poor record against fellow Andalucian sides this season. With over a thousand Malaga supporters having made the short trip to Almeria, the first half was disappointing with both sides failing to put a decent attack together. Malaga started the second half brightly but on 56 minutes midfielder Soriano scored for Almeria. The goal came following a short bout of head tennis, with Soriano climbing above his marker on the far side of the area to nod inside to teammate Santiago Acasiete, who headed the ball twice to knock it back into the path of Soriano, who slid

in to guide the ball past Munua. Malaga, without key playmaker Duda through suspension, tried to hit back quickly and they had two openings in rapid succession around the hour-mark. However, Javi Lopez`s effort was saved by Alves before Fernando Fernandez sliced a shot
wide of the near post. This means that of their five meetings against fellow local sides - Xerez (twice), Almeria (twice) and Sevilla - Malaga have now only picked up two points. Three points are now vital next week at home to Villareal. Report: Scott Forbes

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The recent slight improvement in the Spanish weather was much in evidence last Saturday when the C.O.G.S. played their March outing at the beautifully prepared Los Arqueros course, and when we arrived the sun was shining in a completely clear blue sky. The course however is one of the most tricky ones to be found on the Costa del Sol and soon began to frustrate a lot of us. The scores have always been on the low side at this venue so the winning total of 33 points by Ian Robinson was all the more creditable. Ian has been a very consistent performer over the last few years and I was surprised when he told me that this was his first win in three years. Congratulations to him and also to The News’ own Geoff Heading who was runner-up with 31 points. Third with 28 points was Ian Hold and the team prize with a total of 97 points was Joe King, Russell Wood, guest Mick Rhodes and Ian Robinson. Another consistent player, Gerry Owens, won both nearest-the-pin prizes on the 14th and 16th holes while the longest drive on the very narrow 7th hole was claimed by a highly delighted Allan Loftus. The par three sweep money was divided four ways between Andy MacFarlane, Mick Rhodes, John Bamber and yours truly. All in all a very enjoyable day finished off in perfect style at Leslies with bangers and mash, onion gravy and a pint. Till the next time keep your head down. Dave
Hull City sack manager Phil Brown Chairman Adam Pearson said in his statement that Brown had been “relieved of his managerial duties” and put “ on gardening leave with immediate effect” with the club languishing in the Premier League relegation zone. Terry Venables has emerged as a front runner for the post with Mark Hughes also in the frame.
England Labour to first Test victory Swann finished the second innings with figures of 5-127 and was named man of the match after his overall 10-217 performance, a great effort from the spinner. Graeme Swann completed a maiden 10-wicket haul to help England overcome some stubborn resistance from Bangladesh and register a 181-run victory on the fifth afternoon of the first test on Tuesday. Off-spinner Swann ended a battling 167-run sixth-wicket partnership in the second over after the lunch break to dash any hopes Bangladesh had of
