‘Nobody forced us to make the cuts’ Addressing rumours about outside pressures on Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to make the spending cuts he announced last week, Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez De la Vega told reporters on Tuesday: “Nobody forced us to make the cuts.” The newspapers have been full of reports since last Wednesday that French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Barack Obama had all urged Sr Zapatero to make drastic inroads into the country's deficit. Sra De la Vega said the decision was made for the good of Spain, to “recover economic growth and to create employment”. And the PM said that he had put Spain above his own political ambitions, amid rumours

that he would be forced to call an early general election, at present slated for March 2012. Since the announcement the trade unions have said public employees – who face a 5% drop in salary – will be going on strike, although a date has not been fixed. The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has said it will not support the pension freeze due to be implemented next year, which the general public

has also rejected. One of the government's allies in Parliament, the moderate Catalan nationalist party CiU, has also said it will not support a pension freeze. Both parties have said there are other spending cuts that could be made – such as reducing the number of ministers and public employees – without hurting one of the most vulnerable sectors, the old age pensioners.

EU leaders as well as President Obama. However, the International Monetary Fund has said that the cuts, while considerable, do not go far enough.

WORLD Yet another bank drives me nuts!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I think certain banks are here in Spain to drive everybody absolutely nuts. We have just opened a new account with a bank in Fuengirola who have branches in the UK and they have already managed to mess up the whole thing. We simply asked for a rate of exchange to transfer money from the UK in pounds to the account here. They gave us a rate of €1.11 but we found that we could get almost €1.17 by using a company called www.xe.com so we told them not to transfer anything. We put it all in writing and they confirmed back, in writing, that they wouldn't do any transfers. Guess what? They did! When the bank was asked to send it back to the UK they said that the exchange rate had since changed and that it would cost us €600 extra to send it back. WHAT???? After a while of argybargy we asked for their “Libro de reclamaciones”. They said that banks don't have to have one and that we had to go through their system to reclaim any money. We said we'd go to the police and do a denuncia. They said let's not be hasty we'll try and sort it out. They have until tomorrow to do so! Oh yes, and banks have “Ojas de Reclamaciones” which amounts to the same thing. Splitting hairs for the guiries who don't know the in-and-out workings over here - but now I know and so does everybody else who reads my column. I'll let you know what happens, and their name if it's not sorted!

Judge Garzón does not feel persecuted

Judge Baltasar Garzón

Just days after being suspended from his post by the General Council of the Judiciary, judge Baltasar Garzon travelled to Paris to receive an award from the School of Political Science. At a reception given for him by Paris deputy mayor Anne Hidalgo, he told reporters that he does not feel persecuted “by anybody in Spain, but if someone is doing it they should explain why.” Several of his

supporters claim the Partido Popular is behind the judge's current troubles. He is due to face trial on charges that he abused his powers by opening an inquiry in 2008 into crimes committed during the Franco regime

which are covered by the 1977 Amnesty Law. In February, a Supreme Court investigating magistrate ruled that Sr Garzon had ignored the 1977 amnesty by launching the investigation. Earlier last

week, Sr Garzon reportedly asked to take a leave of absence to work for the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague as an adviser for seven months. The judge's detractors accuse him of launching

cases that are politically motivated. His targets have included the late Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, Italian President Silvio Berlusconi and alQaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

Morocco's prime minister, Abbas el Fassi (pictured below), has called on Spain to start talks to put an the end to the “occupation” of the Moroccan cities, Ceuta and Melilla, and nearby islands”. During an address to the Moroccan parliament on Tuesday, Mr Fassi asked Spain for a “vision of the future which takes into account the common interests of both countries and the new strategic and geopolitical realities”. Morales accuses pp of financing coup attempt

Prince Felipe with Evo Morales

Bolivian President Evo Morales, in Madrid to attend the EULatin American and Caribbean Summit, once again accused the Partido Popular and a “foundation close to it” of being behind an attempt to overthrow his government two years ago. He also accused the PP of financing separatist groups who tried to separate the rich province of Sucre from the rest of Bolivia in 2007 and 2008. He denied that the foundation he referred to was the one founded by former Prime Minister José Maria Aznar, but it is the only foundation with any known connection to the PP. Sr Morales is a protégé

Sr Morales was speaking at a breakfast given by the Europa Press news agency for the heads of government of some 60 countries who attended the summit. Hugo Chavez, Cuban president Raul

Castro and Uruguayan president José Mujica did not attend the summit in protest at the presence of Honduran President Porfirio Lobo who was elected after the overthrow of Manuel Zelaya – another Chavez protégé – last year. However, Sr Lobo decided not to attend the summit to prevent a more widespread boycott.

The government has denied a rumour that it intends to renew peace talks with the Basque terrorist group ETA. The rumour emerged after eight ETA prisoners addressed an open letter to the general public last week in which they called on ETA leaders to put an “irreversible end” to terrorism. Some of the eight have already been expelled from ETA while the rest are known to disagree with the group's intention of carrying on the armed struggle to achieve independence for the Basque Country. In response to the Partido Popular's threat to withdraw from the Socialist-PP coalition that governs the Basque Country – which would inevitably lead to the fall of the regional government – Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said the government does not want to have anything to do with ETA, and asked the PP not to complicate the issue.

Prince stands in for King

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

Crown Prince Felipe will carry out his father's duties until the doctors allow him back to work. King Juan Carlos left the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona on May 11 after being operated on for a benign nodule on his lung the previous Saturday. Forbidden to travel by air, the King is currently

recovering in a private clinic outside Barcelona, where the doctors who carried out the operation can monitor his recovery. The King is expected to be back in harness by the

end of the month. Meanwhile, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia hosted the official dinner on Tuesday for the heads of government who attended the two-day EULatin American and

Caribbean summit held in Madrid at the beginning of the week. The prince also presided at the King's Cup final between Sevilla and Atletico de Madrid at the Camp Nou in Barcelona on Wednesday.

Montilla’s costly Drunken driver Senate speech injures 7 Catalan Premier José Montilla's speech to the Senate on May 24 – if it goes ahead – will cost a minimum of €6,500, the fee for seven translators who will relay his speech in Catalan, Basque, Gallego and Valencian. The Senate's decision to allow senators and invited

speakers to address the Upper House in their own languages – at an estimated yearly cost of €120,000 – has been harshly criticised in these hard economic times and it is probable that the decision will be allowed to die a quiet death in the not-too-distant future.

MADRID. More than a million vehicles with bald or seriously defective tyres are currently on the country's roads, according to a study by the Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) and Goodyear. Three out of every four vehicles involved in accidents have bad tyres, and RACE, Goodyear and the Traffic Authority plan to launch a “Check your tyres for safety” campaign.

NEW YORK. For the first time ever, Spain will occupy one of the places on the UN's Human Rights Council for the next three years. The Council's 47 member countries monitor basic human rights around the world. UN ambassador Juan AntonioYáñez-Barnuevo said Spain would use the opportunity to promote equality for all, regardless of income or social position.

Guardia to No documents in impound bicycles Catalan please MADRID. A new Traffic Authority law will allow the Guardia Civil to seize and impound bicycles when the riders are caught not wearing their crash helmets on inter-city roads. The law, which comes into effect in June, is aimed principally at motorcyclists but, given the increasing popularity of cycling as a sport, Traffic decided to include this category as well.

France's Minister of Justice and Spain's General Judiciary Council have asked the Catalan judges not to send them documents in Catalan because their translation delays legal processes, as well as being an unnecessary expense. France only accepts legal documents in Spanish, English, Italian and German. Last year, one in five case reports and sentences issued in Barcelona were in Catalan.

New rules to aid ash flight chaos The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) introduced new rules on Tuesday that allow planes to fly at higher ash densities for a limited time. CAA chief executive Andrew Haines said that he felt "unprecedented situations" required "new measures" and the challenge posed by the volcano could not be underestimated. He said the world's top scientists tell us that we cannot assume the effects of this volcano will be the same as others elsewhere: "Its proximity to the UK, the length of time it is continuously erupting and the weather patterns are all exceptional features.” Mr Haines went on to say that the answer could only

come from aircraft and engine manufacturers establishing what levels of ash their products could safely tolerate. A spokesman for the budget airline Flybe welcomed the move. He said the airline had been forced to cancel 381 flights during 48 hours but if the new criteria had already been in place, it would have only affected 21 flights. All flight restrictions have now been lifted after the volcanic ash cloud over UK airspace moved away, but knock-on disruption

continues. Airline chiefs had heavily criticised the earlier no-fly zone system, which stranded thousands of passengers at UK airports. British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh said blanket bans on flying were "a gross overreaction to a very minor risk" and called for a "much better and more sensible" approach, while Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said reliance on "outdated, inappropriate and imaginary" computer-

generated volcanic ash concentration charts was "ridiculous". On Sunday, Virgin Atlantic president Sir Richard Branson called the closure of Manchester airport "beyond a joke". Since the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted last month, throwing huge amounts of ash into the air, thousands of flights have been delayed or cancelled across Europe due to fears that ash could turn into molten glass within a hot jet engine, crippling the aircraft.

Treasury note: There's no money left

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es David Laws

David Laws - the Liberal Democrat MP who is chief secretary to the Treasury in the new coalition government - has revealed the note his predecessor Liam Byrne had "very nicely" left him. During his first joint press conference with the new Chancellor George Osborne since the general election, he said that when he found a letter on his desk on his very first day as chief secretary, he assumed the previous chief secretary was giving him some advice. Mr Laws

said: "Unfortunately, when I opened it, it was a onesentence letter which simply said 'Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left,' which was honest, but slightly less than the helpful advice I had been expecting!" Treasury sources said the letter,

dated 6 April – the day Gordon Brown called the general election – actually read: "Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid there is no money. Kind regards – and good luck! Liam." It was similar to the note reportedly left by the Conservative Reggie Maudling to Labour's Jim

Liam Byrne

Callaghan when he became chancellor in 1964, which said: "Sorry to leave it in such a mess." Mr Byrne was reported as having said the letter was meant as a joke, and that he was just using the language that everyone in that job used eventually.

Portugal backs same-sex marriage President Anibal Cavaco Silva said on Monday that he will sign a law legalising samesex marriage passed by parliament earlier this year, which has been fiercely opposed by conservatives in the Catholic country. The ratification will make Portugal the sixth country in Europe to allow same-sex marriage after Belgium, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden. Mr Silva made his announcement just days

after Pope Benedict, on a visit to Portugal last week, told pilgrims they should oppose the law. In a televised address, Mr Silva said he regretted that political parties had failed to reach a compromise on the

issue. He said vetoing the bill would merely return it to parliament where his decision would be overturned, at a time when MPs needed to focus on the economic crisis facing the country. The bill had

HAVANA. A Cuban appeal court has quashed the jail sentence given to dissident journalist Dania Garcia and given her a minor fine instead. Ms Garcia, a blogger who writes for US-based opposition websites, had been sentenced to 20 months in jail on a charge of abuse of authority for mistreating her 23-year-old daughter, who disapproved of her political activism.

TOKYO. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s popularity has plunged amid criticism of his leadership – and his fashion sense. The public found two shirts – a checked one with one sleeve yellow, the other blue, a red front, purple back and green cuffs, and a white shirt printed with red hearts which he teamed with a pink blazer – particularly outrageous!

It lists police appeals as well as pictures of wanted suspects. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said it was a great that would help make London even safer. Nationally, 21 people are arrested and charged every day, as a result of information passed to Crimestoppers.

LOS ANGELES. Openly lesbian Mary Glasspool, 56, was ordained assistant bishop on Saturday despite an appeal to the US Episcopal Church from Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams not to proceed with the ordination. He said it would further alienate the traditionalists who believe active homosexuality to be a sin and could lead to a permanent split in the Anglican Community.

received parliamentary approval with the support of the governing Socialist Party and other parties further to the left. But parliament rejected proposals to allow homosexual couples to adopt children.

Two young British children Rule change for murdered by mother young convicts Washington’s Supreme Court

Catalonia police (Mossos d’Esquadra) confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that they had arrested a British woman in Lloret de Mar, in connection with the death of her two young children a boy of less than a year and a girl under five - in the bedroom of the four-star hotel where the family were on holiday. An autopsy is expected to reveal that the two died from asphyxiation, as there were no signs of violence on the bodies.

Staff at the Hotel Miramar on the seafront in Lloret, were said to have been alerted at around 2.00 pm by the children’s mother herself and an ambulance

arrived almost immediately, but paramedics were unable to resuscitate either of the children.

The US Supreme Court ruled on Monday that youths can no longer be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for crimes other than murder.

Later that afternoon the mother, accompanied by a judge and police, went back to the hotel room where she, apparently, re-enacted what had happened earlier. No further information has been released. A spokesman for the British Embassy said: “We believe the mother has been arrested. There is an ongoing investigation.” Lloret de Mar is one of the most popular resorts on Spain's Costa Brava catering

Children’s mother being taken away by the Mossos d’Esquadra

for thousands of British tourists every year. Bill Bond, a British journalist based in Spain, said: "The mother was booked on a holiday and had arrived at the hotel with the children."

A child’s body is removed

The court upheld an appeal by Terrance Graham, now 22, a Florida man who was sentenced to life at the age of 17 for armed burglary. His lawyers appealed against his sentence, saying it breached his rights under the constitution's Eighth Amendment which bans "cruel and unusual" punishments. The Supreme Court said 129

US youths were currently serving similar sentences – 77 of whom were in Florida. The US is thought to be the only country in the world to allow such sentences. Rights groups, who frequently criticise US criminal justice policies, renewed their attacks on the country's system. A spokesman for Human Rights Watch said: "The United States is the world's worst human rights violator in terms of sentencing young offenders to life without parole."

city, 222 prostitutes and 40 clients have been denounced since the socalled Co-existence Ordinance was introduced six months ago, paying fines of up to €3,000 for offering or soliciting sex in public places.

DISTRESS SALE

Garrido was arrested and the police decided to keep him in jail while they investigated the case. They said he seemed to be working alone but suspected he was the front man for a group working the scam.

Electric meter fiddle uncovered The Guardia Civil in Antequera arrested two men last week, accused of operating a scam in which they offered to cut electricity bills by half by installing a device on the metres. A Guardia spokesman said the men targeted consumers with high electricity bills and had so far convinced 13 companies in the hotel, livestock and food industries to install the device for a fee of between

€150 and €200. The companies also had to agree to pay between €50 and €100 on a monthly basis.

The investigation, called Voltio (Volt) has been extended to Cordoba and Sevilla provinces.

A group of bikers are hoping to raise £5,000 to help five-year-old Tomas Leighton see again by riding in convoy to Spain. Satan's Slaves, based in Wheatley, Halifax, are making the mammoth trip to raise money for Tomas Leighton who was born with cerebral palsy and totally blind. He needs physiotherapy and hydrotherapy twice a day, as well as weekly hearing and speech-stimulation sessions. His family moved to the Costa del Sol to help his treatment. Head of the chapter Darren Fawthrop,

known as Big D, met Tomas's parents, Jill and Jon, on holiday.

being made guests of honour at a special concert.

The group – five leatherclad bikers and four of their partners – left the UK last Saturday, May 15, and arrived in Spain on Monday. They boarded a ferry to Calais on Sunday before riding through France and the Pyrenees. They were met by a Spanish TV crew before

Big D said: "Tomas wasn't given a hope by the doctors. But we know now that stem-cell treatment will give him a chance.” He said his parents, originally from Manchester, were totally devoted. "They have never ever moaned or got down about it. They're so positive," he said.

Tomas's mum, Jill, said: "Many people think that because of the way bikers look they are villains and troublemakers. But we cannot thank them enough for what they have done." Big D said: "If anyone can help us to help them, we'd be so grateful." Last month the group raised £2,000 for Tomas at a waxand-shave night.

Rains have reduced air pollution This winter’s heavy rains have reduced air pollution throughout Malaga province for the first time in five years. Air pollution measurements were

higher than the maximum limits set by the European Union on hundreds of occasions during the fiveyear drought which was ended by the rains this

winter – 256 times during the last year alone. The measurements were 96 times higher than the EU limits in 2005, the year the drought set in. The

downside is that the rains have increased vegetation growth, heightening the risk of forest fires this summer as it turns dry.

LA LINEA. The Unified Police Syndicate (SUP) has complained that only one of the local National Police's eight patrol cars is actually roadworthy and that they work out of a 40-year-old building which needs urgent repairs. A SUP spokesman added that the cells flood every time it rains, and prisoners have to be taken to drier quarters in Algeciras.

MALAGA. Since Ikea opened almost three years ago, it has received more than eight million visitors, director Mounia El Hilali told the press last week. She said the Malaga branch is one of the top three in Spain, after the Madrid and Barcelona branches. She said sales were up 5% last year, with cupboards, kitchens and mattresses being among the best selling items.

Ways round anti- PP would win Sevilla smoking law SEVILLA. The Andalucian Hoteliers' Association is looking at ways to avoid a drop in income when the new anti-smoking law, which will ban lighting up in all public places, comes into effect in July. The proposals they intend to present to the Junta de Andalucia include longer opening hours and giving bars outdoor terraces fitted with fans to allow smoking outside.

SEVILLA. For the first time, a voting intention poll indicates that the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, would have a majority on the City Council if the local elections were held now. The poll was taken before the budge cuts announced last week. Andalucia is a Socialist stronghold with the PP only recently capturing some of the larger towns.

The mother of all U-turns

Memo from Madrid

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of El Pais

The Garzón episode

I

was going to give this column a title along the lines of “landing with a bump” but Zapatero landed with the force of a small meteorite when he announced his spending cuts last week – leaving a crater half a mile wide and 100 feet deep, much more than the dent a bump would have made.

W

hat he did in the process was turn his back on all the social policies he has so ardently defended since he came to power six years ago, so it couldn’t be classed as one of the U-turns he’s so famous for – hence the revised title.

Judge Baltasar Garzón

W

H

is announcement came as no surprise to the Spaniards. After all, they’d been listening to the Partido Popular telling him the party was over for months. But what particularly annoyed them was the threatened freezing of pensions as of next year. I say threatened because the government is already making noises about perhaps not going ahead with it, especially if “inflation this year rises above 1%”. The other cut they didn’t like was the abolition of the so-called baby-cheque – the €2,500 that women have been getting for having a baby. Those cuts involved two vulnerable sectors of the population – old people and women, who are the first to get sacked when times get tough and who still don’t get equal pay for equal work. And, of course, he’s probably lost the votes of the more than one million public sector workers who will take a 5% drop in salary as of next month. However, here the government is also making conciliatory noises – something about putting off the cut till Spain leaves the EU presidency at the end of June.

B

eing president of the EU probably did Zapatero a lot of good. He’s had to oversee the debacle of rescuing Greece from its spending sins and this might have made him realise that his grandparents were probably right when they told him not to spend money he didn’t have. He’s also had to listen to economic experts and heads of government with far more political and economic savvy than he can ever hope to have and perhaps some of their advice may have stuck in his small mind.

B

ut the most humiliating thing of all for most Spaniards was that it was pressure from outside that forced him into action – finally – with even Barack Obama getting in on the act. Obama apparently rang him early last week to urge him to tackle the deficit and while this may sound like meddling by the US president, it isn’t really. Whatever happens in the eurozone affects the rest of the world for good or ill – including the US, Russia and the so-called Asian Tigers – so the sooner the EU countries put their houses in order the better.

Y

es, the party is finally over. Governments, like those individuals who flashed their credit

cards around as if there were no tomorrow, have finally realised that you will eventually end up paying dearly for spending the money you don’t have. We’re now paying the price for our economic hubris – that overweening arrogance and self-confidence that the gods always punish, according to the Ancient Greeks.

hat happened to Baltasar Garzón should never be allowed to happen to any judge in any country. But on the other hand, no judge should have been permitted to conduct his own media circus around his decisions in the way that Garzón has been doing for more than a decade. In the end, what got Judge Garzón kicked off the High Court bench last Friday was the accumulation of discontent inside and outside the judiciary.

G

nd boy, will Zapatero be made to pay. The latest opinion polls show that the Partido Popular is now nine points ahead of the Socialist Party – up from 1.5 just a week ago – and most humiliating of all for Zapatero – he is now less popular than Jose Maria Aznar was when he took Spain into the war in Iraq.

arzón is Spain’s most famous magistrate and, ever since he tried to win public office under Prime Minister Felipe González’s Socialist ticket in the 1993 election, the only one who has had a knack for capturing headlines. When he arrived in the High Court, he made a career of going after ETA, Latin American dictators, Al Qaeda, and anyone else whom he believed should be brought to justice on human rights violations. In 1998, Garzón gained world attention when he issued an arrest warrant for the former Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet, who was visiting the UK at the time.

T

H

A

he unions are threatening one or more general strikes – although it remains to be seen if those paper tigers will ever get off their backsides long enough to do anything serious. It’s all very well to go on marches supporting the likes of judge Baltasar Garzón but quite another to upset the very people whose handouts finance your “revolutionary” activities. And a propos of handouts, according to press reports on Tuesday, the government has just okayed another €15 million in subsidies for the unions.

T

he news from the regional branches of the Socialist Party isn’t good either. If opinion polls are any indication, it looks as if the Socialist Party will not form part of the next government of Catalonia, as the CiU party, which ruled the region for more than 20 years, surges ahead in the polls. Worse still, the two Socialist strongholds of Andalucia and Castilla-La Mancha are trembling on the brink of falling into the hands of the PP – for the first in both region's history.

Z

apatero has said there are more cuts on the way so perhaps his wife's dearest wish will come true – Zapatero will not be leading his party into the next election, which may happen sooner than March 2012.

is adroitness in generating publicity garnered him more appeal and won him the respect of the most liberal magistrates and legal scholars around the globe. But not everyone was happy with the way Garzón was carrying on with these public relations strategies – especially the legal sector’s traditional wing, which prides itself on the convention that judges should be circumspect and discreet in handling their caseload work. Judges usually don’t write books, they write opinions; they don’t appear on television, they appear on the bench; and they don’t give reporters interviews about their decisions but instead discuss with lawyers what they think. Garzón was far from guarded.

I

n his book, “Christmas Tales: A Different World is Possible,” which was published in 2002, he discusses the flaws in the international justice system and expounds his views on immigration, religious fundamentalism and the rights of indigenous people. In other words, it is a useful guide for any lawyer who wants to ensure that a brief filed in Garzón’s courtroom will get high praise.

T

rue, Garzón made his own enemies, not only outside the courtroom but also among those who don the same robe. In an interview, Garzón’s High Court

colleague José Ricardo de Prada told EL PAÍS on Sunday why he and other magistrates approved Garzón’s opening of an inquiry into crimes committed during Francisco Franco’s regime. It was one of those rare but cautious press interviews given by judges to express their frustration or explain a situation at hand. The Francocrimes case has led to the unraveling of Garzón´s career on the bench and one in which he still faces a Supreme Court trial. Judge De Prada explained that the 1977 Amnesty Law, which is being used a basis to charge Garzón with overstepping his jurisdiction, cannot be applied to serious violations such as genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes. Then he added: “We all know that we run risks in our professions but this has gone too far. There are vendettas and internal power struggles [in the Spanish judiciary] which are what really matter in the end.”

I

n other countries such as the United States , judges are only brought to trial if they commit a real crime – accepting bribes, negotiating decisions, or partaking in impropriety. If a magistrate errs in the decision-making process, he is overturned by a higher court and the final decision is respected; case closed. But in Spain , such a simple slip that could mean delving into the country’s recent dark past, of which many of the era’s key players are still alive, is enough to cost anyone their professional career. Even the Falangist Party of the JONS, the fascist group which joined the complaint against Garzón, hinted at how he may have disturbed a sleeping dog. Falange deputy secretary Jorge Garrido said that Garzón made the mistake of asking the Interior Ministry for the names of all Falange members since 1951 without, according to Garrido, discerning his group from the same Falange organisations that existed in the 1940s and 1950s. True it is an offshoot, but, as I have discussed before (The News, May 5, 2010), it is the only one that has been granted legality to use the party’s historical signs and symbols.

T

he Garzón episode is indeed a wakeup call for all parties – the judiciary, the government, lawmakers, the public – to draft new laws that guarantee that judges will be protected from being hunted down for poking a bees’ hive. It should also serve as a good lesson for all magistrates who are appointed to do what they are expected to do - maintain independence, impartiality, and avoid impropriety.

Torremolinos What on earth does M. Delfin mean by “Ablutions to God of his JW classmates”? Why wouldn't the two girls as much as stand up? Bad manners? Like his hero Zapatero's refusal to join the King and everybody else in standing up at a parade when the stars and stripes was being marched

past? As for M.D.'s argument that some women may wear the hijab voluntarily....some battered wives may well be masochists and some others may prefer to walk three paces behind their lords wearing the full black monty in forty degree heat. But I doubt that there are many.

Per R. Dewar Sabinillas In Edn.72 under the by-line ‘Defending Andalucia against Muslims’, there appeared the statement “there could be some truth in a popular joke in Andalucia that the current Moroccan immigrants are the vanguard of an eventual invasion”. While interpretations of the terms ‘jihad’ and ‘Al Qaeda’, (the latter is merely a convenient label applied by the West to a far more dangerous phenomenon of Islamic militancy) can be found elsewhere, it is not an ‘invasion’ in the ‘tanks and artillery’ sense of the word. There will be no blitzkrieg but something far more insidious. Many have been the statements (since the socalled ‘9/11’ and before) by leading Islamic fundamentalists about ‘liberating Spain from the Infidels’; I would like to quote from three of these. Saudi Arabia’s influential English language ‘Saudi

Gazette’ reported in 2005 that ‘there are four million descendents of refugees from Muslim Spain currently living in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. In Morocco, the fall of Granada and Al-Andalus is commemorated by many of these descendants’. More recently, in June 2007, Islamist websites announced the establishment of ‘Ansar AlIslam’ in the Muslim Sahara. This organization promises to win back Al-Andalus. “AlAndalus is before our eyes,” claims a statement in the website, “with Allah's help we will take it back...no matter how long this takes." Finally, Osama bin Laden wrote: "We request of Allah...that the Islamic nation should regain its honour and prestige, should raise again Allah’s flag on all stolen Islamic land, from Palestine to Andalus." Militant Islam in Al-Andalus is no joke.

It may interest your readers that I went for "Double Taxation" about seven years ago & since then I've not paid any British tax on my pensions, until this month, when I was deducted 40% tax on one private pension!

I then rang Inland Revenue, Workington, Cumbria, on 0044 845 0703703 who apologised and said that they would correct it immediately. Is this Gordon Brown / Alistair Darling trying to make their exit figures look better than reality?

The Verb Book by Valerie Mitchell Spanish verbs difficult. I felt there was a need for a verb book which set out the most essential information in a simple and userfriendly way. This is what I hope to have achieved.” The Verb Book has a small but useful list of the most common verbs. It is set out in a nonintimidating way and the English is listed next to the Spanish so you can see at a glance what each part of each verb means. As with Valerie’s first two books, colour is used to

Earthshine Did you happen to spot the crescent Moon very close to Venus last weekend? You probably noticed that the dark area of the Moon was not completely dark but had a quite pronounced light cast on to it.

I queried this with my pension provider, Scottish Widows. They told me that they had to work to the UK Inland Revenue's instructions – who had suddenly changed my tax code from NT (No Tax) to BR (whatever that is) for no apparent reason – and that since they normally receive about 80,000 of these notifications each month but had received 200,000 this last month, thought that the Inland Revenue had made about 120,000 big mistakes!

BOOK REVIEW

Valerie Mitchell, who writes our fortnightly “Poco a poco” column has now published her third book – a book of verbs. Her first two “Shortcuts to Spanish” books have been well received and I recently asked her why she felt the need to write a verb book. “Well,” said Valerie, “I teach a variety of people, from complete beginners to relatively advanced students and the one thing they all have in common is that they find coping with

Stargazing

differentiate between the Spanish and the English. I would recommend this little book which sells at €7 as a useful tool to people wanting to learn Spanish at all levels. The book is available from The News office in Coin, Woody’s Bookshop in Los Boliches, David’s Bookshop in Los Boliches, Ann’s Bookshop in Bonanza Square, Arroyo de la Miel, and from Centro Idiomas – by calling 952 450 747 or by emailing vjeffrey1@fastmail.fm

This phenomenon is known as Earthshine and is caused by the Earth shining so brightly in the lunar sky that it lights up the Moon. When the Moon is in its crescent stage, the Earth is almost fully illuminated by the Sun and with the white clouds and also being so much bigger than the Moon, then it shines very brightly indeed. If you think about how bright a full moon can appear from Earth - it is often bright enough to cause shadows - then you will get an idea of how bright the Earth can appear from the Moon. The amount of Earthshine seen on the Moon varies according to how much cloud cover there is on the Earth at the time. Clouds, snow or ice reflect a lot more of the sunshine than the land or the oceans do, and April and May are the best months for Earthshine due to the extra cloud coverage.

Because the Moon always keeps the same face pointed towards the Earth, the Earth always appears in the same place as viewed from the Moon and creates a constantly changing view as it revolves during its day. Throughout the lunar cycle the phases of the Earth would change too. When it is a full moon the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun so the Earth appears full but, when it is a full Moon it is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun so the Earth appears in darkness. You would still be able to see part of the Earth’s atmosphere though forming a ring all the way around the Earth. Any future lunar explorers who spend long periods living on the Moon will be treated to an incredible spectacle at sunset thanks to the Earthshine lighting their way. The term ‘blue moon’ traditionally refers to an

extra moon in a season: if a season has four full moons (rather than the more common three), then the third of the four moons was known as a blue moon. Although ‘once in a blue moon’ is meant to refer to something that doesn’t happen very often, since there are on average 12.37 full moons in a year, a ‘blue moon’ must occur on average every 2.7 years or 7 times in 19 years, so not that rare then. Our Moon is not the only Moon in the solar system to have ‘planet shine’, if you were on a moon going around Jupiter for instance then Jupiter would appear huge in your sky and would shine dazzlingly bright. And the view of Saturn’s rings system must be incredible from one of its Moons. Electricity - You must act now or be cut off if you use more than 10kw! For those of you who are totally confused by the new rules for re-registering for your electricity, including me, here’s what it’s all about. While discussing it in the office – because a chap from Endesa had come in – half of us knew nothing about it! There may have been something that looked like an advert that came in with the latest outrageous monthly bill but, like a lot of people, if it wasn’t designed as a letter with “Important Notice” on the top of it, most of us have probably thrown it away. The right to move to another electricity company, thereby availing yourself of discounts, offers and all manner of things, is happening now. Unlike when Telefonica opened up from being a total monopoly and hardly anybody bothered to move, the government are forcing Endesa to make sure people either renew their contract with them or chose another company. As of this month, they will start “fining” people for not making up their minds. First by charging you an extra 5% this

month then up to 20% by October at which point if you haven’t re-contracted, they will cut you off! So, if your current contract gives you more than 10kw – a lot of small business will have this – have a look on the internet to see who is giving the best deal and register with your chosen company now to avoid fines and let Endesa know that you won’t be continuing with them in the future or, if you want to stick with them, you’ll need to resign an agreement.

Carsick Dogs

If you’ve ever been travel sick, you’ll know how I feel!

Does a short car trip feel more like a roller coaster ride for your dog? If the jingle of the car keys signals motion sickness for your canine and messy clean-up for you, don't despair – there are steps you can take to make your animal companion as comfortable as possible when traveling in a car. Many dogs suffer from car sickness, especially when they're young. Some outgrow it, but in the meantime, you may want to make sure your dog has an empty stomach whenever it's time to hit the road. Don't give him any food 3 to 4 hours prior to travel. Do make sure he's had water. Dramamine may also help prevent car sickness, best to discuss this with your vet. Medication for motion sickness is not recommended for dogs with bladder disorders or glaucoma. If you know your dog is prone to car sickness, be sure to take it slow, and be extra careful around sharp curves or up and down hills. Fast stops and starts are rough on upset stomachs. I recommend that you open the window a bit, fresh air does wonders for animals who have a tendency to get car sick. Take note of the temperature; dogs cannot regulate their body temperatures as

efficiently as humans can, so make sure it isn't too hot (or too cold ) in the car.Looking out the window can bring on nausea in many dogs, and in any event is against the law, if caught this could cost 1000 Euros. Keep your pet safe and secure in a covered kennel, or get him to lay down on the floor. Some dogs do well wearing a specially constructed canine seat belt. For some canines, the fear and anxiety attached to car travel are the cause of nausea. You can help calm your pet by getting him used to riding in a car. Begin by simply sitting in the car, without turning the engine on. Be sure to praise him. Do this on several occasions, and when he seems comfortable, turn on the engine. Again, heap on the praise, and slowly work up to short trips around the block. Finally, when you and your pet start taking long trips together, it's a good idea to take a rest stop every 30 minutes and then, eventually, every hour. Give him time enough for a quick stretch, a short walk and a drink of fresh water. If you have a problem you can write to me at david@thedogman.net and those that might want a one to one consultation call me on 610 868 748.

Is there anyone out there who did not love Toy Story? Here it is - the third part in Pixar's phenomenally successful Toy Story franchise - just made for mums, dads and the kids to savour. It and Shrek hold a special place in a lot of people’s hearts. This time it’s in 3D and Andy is all grown up and off to college leaving Woody, Buzz and the rest of the toys to face an uncertain future. Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz), John Ratzenburger (Hamm) and Wallace Shawn (Rex) are all back, plus Timothy Dalton as Mr Pricklepants. It´s from Pixar, it's directed by Lee Ukrich (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Toy Story 2) so it looks like a racing certainty to be a mega hit. July. The A-Team was a TV staple of the 80s. US soldiers arrested for a crime they did not commit who escape from prison, meet up with an old buddy, and become soldiers of fortune. The updated version has Liam Neeson as "Hannibal" Smith, Bradley Cooper as "Faceman" Peck, Sharlto Copley is "Howling Mad" Murdock and martial arts fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson takes over the role of BA Baracus, created by Mr T. So with some lingering affection for the TV series and a movie-size budget to splash out on special effects, this should generate interest. end July. The phenomenon that is the Twilight series will have young fans everywhere eagerly awaiting the further adventures of Bella and her vampire boyfriend Edward, who find

themselves under threat yet again. The Twilight Saga:Eclipse, is the third movie based on the four-book series and Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are now superstars. Bella must choose between her love for Edward and her friendship for the werewolf Jacob, knowing that the outcome could spark a war between the two supernatural races. Video clips look very scary! The previous instalment, New Moon, broke box office records for its opening day take and the latest in the franchise looks set to carry all before it. June/July.

A

s a vehicle for promoting the talents of a successful rock or pop star, the idea of using a movie to showcase talent is not new. The Jazz Singer was first full length film to offer synchronised dialogue in Al Jolson’s 1927 version of the often remade movie.

T

he original plotline of a Jewish boy swapping the role of cantor in his local synagogue for the role of popular music artist, was based on Al Jolson’s own story in the first place, so it was only fitting that he should have the movie spotlight for himself. With several remakes throughout the film’s 83 year history, my favourite version is the 1980 release starring Neil Diamond as Jess Robins the one-time cantor, Sir Lawrence Olivier as his father and Lucia Arnaz as his agent.

S And of course, The Expendables, which brings together just about every kick-ass superstar there has ever been in modern movie making - Stallone, Schwarzeneggar in a cameo role, Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, and Dolph Lundgren. A brainchild of Sylvester Stallone's what's not to love if you love action movies with a blockbusting cast? Summer.

everal songs from the film’s soundtrack became big chart hits for Mr Diamond and his acting was OK too, but you can really appreciate the genius of Lawrence Olivier as he stoops and mumbles his way through the role of the cantor’s crotchety old father. Paul Nicholas, the Peter Pan of seventies and eighties film and TV (he never looked a day older than 25 until he hit 50), also makes an appearance in the film as the much-disliked rock singer ‘Keith Lennox’. In the film, rocking cockney Keith takes the now familiar ballad ‘Love on the rocks’ and tries turning it into a loud, up-tempo track, much to the surprise of the song’s writer, the aforementioned Jess Robins. When Jess tries to show the rocker how the song was originally meant to be sung, he wins the girl’s heart and gets kicked out of the recording studio at the same time.

I

’m guessing that Neil Diamond’s version of The Jazz Singer wouldn’t gain him many new fans if it were shown in the cinemas today but for a generation of people of a

certain age, he definitely had a singing voice that the public wanted to hear and so The Jazz Singer soundtrack become the biggest selling album of his 40-odd-year career.

A

nother highly successful soundtrack was that of Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner’s 1992 film The Bodyguard. Although the film itself was not critically acclaimed, it rapidly became a hot favourite on video and then DVD because the songs were a perfect showcase for Whitney’s talents. Being the fastest selling movie soundtrack in history, with total worldwide sales of over 42 million copies, something obviously went right with this production, although you might be surprised to hear that the role of the bodyguard was originally conceived in the mid seventies for Paul Newman to play opposite Diana Ross. Due to arguments over who would take top billing, the film was not made until the early nineties, by which time Kevin Costner had taken the title role and after rejecting Madonna for the role of Rachel Marron, the part was finally offered to pop queen Whitney Houston.

I

like The Bodyguard and The Jazz Singer because in these films people sing songs because they are performers in the story, not because they are farmhands in Oklahoma or ‘barra’ boys in Dickens’ East End, who can just burst into song and dance routines at the drop of a hat, as they so often did in the big cast musicals of the fifties and sixties. Having said that, I do enjoy most things you can sing along to. I was even to be heard singing tracks from Yentl last week whilst in the bathroom. “Papa can you hear me?????” Ok then, I’ll shut the door!

VIRGO

Problems and challenges are always uncomfortable because they require you to dig down deep and come up with a solution that usually takes you out of the space you are currently in. Rising to challenges is something that you excel at though Aries, and by conquering them it gives you confidence, enthusiasm and strength. So if something right now is making you feel fed up and appears an insurmountable challenge – then know it isn’t. You have had a bumpy journey lately but it is all set to change due to a revaluation on your part of how your time is best spent and what requires your utmost energy and concentration. Greater productivity and an air of ease on the financial side are coming your way. One conversation you need to have with someone you will be avoiding, but this issue will become problematic the longer you leave it. Open, honest, tactful communication is the key. Bravery leads to improvements over time. You have the power to influence some things even though it may feel that there is a lot going on that is out of your control. Sorting out confusion, hesitations and unresolved issues will be the theme of the week. You are the driving force behind a sensitive situation so, even if you feel you have little impact, the ripples that you are creating are spreading far and wide. Contemplate situations that are eluding you, the answer may just need a bit of working through. Going against the grain is never easy – you face criticism, rejection and even ridicule. It also takes an inner strength to stay true to what you believe in, even though you could be left standing alone. Rewards will come your way if you stick to your guns, the more you do that you feel is right, the more opposition you attract. Do not be hasty to accept what you should reject and vice versa. It is time to work out why you feel uncomfortable with someone you should be close to. There is likely to be conflict between what your instincts are telling you and what another is saying is good for you. You are looking for signs at the moment as to which way you should direct your energy that will have the potential to lay a pathway to success. There is a relationship that means more to you than you like to admit and you are given an opportunity to heal a wound from the past and at the same time prioritise your own needs. Something has run its course in your life and it is up to you to end it on a high note. To bring all that you have learned together for one last burst of productivity before you lay it to rest. New doors will shortly be opening and your vista is set to widen. You may be worried, as all Virgos are, about change but you have the much needed skill of adaptability at your beck and call to deal with it all. You have a dream, trust this vision and it will come true.

There are more outgoings than incomings at the moment and this is making you feel restless and uncertain regarding the future. There is an opportunity to make a stand if you feel that you have been treated unfairly and some connections you will withdraw from. This is all about taking care of yourself and getting your house in order before helping another. Passion, love and rd September 23 - rewards enter your life towards the middle of next week and this can change nd October 22 everything.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

If another has had an unhealthy hold on you, then this is the week when you break free and allow yourself to be healed. There is nothing preventing you from moving forward in your life, so avoid the temptation to cling to the pain of the past as this will cause unnecessary suffering. There is a bigger picture at work and you are bringing forth much needed change that will benefit another, there is a chance to fix something that has been ‘wrong’ for too long.

SAGITTARIUS The question is do you ‘push your luck’ or do you leave it and walk away with what you have got? Although you tend to be the luckiest sign of the zodiac, there is always a limit, so do not gamble too wildly this week. It will feel like there is an opportunity on every corner but it is your ability to discriminate and apply intelligent effort which will decide if it is a success or an untimely nd November 22 - risk. Times have been taxing but you now have a keen awareness of where you are on your path. Pythagoras and beans Jack had good taste when he used this beanstalk to get to the giant. Broad beans are ready for harvesting right now so here's a bit of interesting info on them and, next week, I'll give you a couple of ideas about what to do with them. The broad bean, or as many know it, the faba bean has a whole host of names – the fava bean, horse bean, field bean, tick bean and Windsor bean. Before the discovery of the Americas it was also the only bean known of in the old world. Although no near ancestor has been found in the wild, remains of the broad or faba bean have been found in Neolithic sites in Israel dating back to 6800-6500 BC. It took another 3000 years to find its way northwards to the Mediterranean and central Europe, but it remained a valuable source of protein throughout the old world until the introduction of the phaselolus bean from across the Atlantic. The beans were eaten by the Greeks,

Egyptians, Chinese, and in Northern India. In Roman times the gladiators were fed a staple diet of beans and barley to prepare for battle. It is popular myth that the well-known ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras died while being pursued into a bean field. He felt unable to trample on any of the beans, believing that the souls of men transformed into beans after death.

vitamin C. There is, of course, more of these nutrients– especially vitamin C– in fresh beans than in dried ones.

For centuries broad beans were a valuable source of protein when meat was scarce. They are high in protein (about 25% when dried) but lacking in some amino-acids, so should be combined with a grain such as wheat, barley or rice. This is a natural combination, which is why popular dishes such as beans on toast and dhal and rice contain both a bean and a grain.

It is a surprising fact that the enzyme for digesting the broad-bean is lacking in some 100 million people world-wide. This condition, known as favism, is a form of haemolytic anaemia and effects mainly people of Mediterranean and MiddleEastern descent. To confuse the Pythagoras link even further it is thought that the triangle-loving ancient Greek also suffered from the condition.

Broad beans also contain copper, niacin, folate and

In Spanish we can put two words together to make a new word. One of my favourites is sacacorchos from the words sacar to take out and corchos corks so it is, of course, a cork-screw. We all know what a parasol is. When we break it down it's from the words parar to stop and sol the sun. Most of these "compound" words are quite logical. Try and work out what the following mean. Answers at the bottom 1. Paraguas 2. Abrelatas 3. Abrebotellas 4. Matamoscas 5. Cortauñas 6. Cortacespéd 7. Saltamontes 8. Guardaespaldas 9. Todoterreno 10. Motosierra ANSWERS. 1. Umbrella from parar to stop and aguas water 2. Can opener from abrir to open and latas cans 3. Bottle opener from abrir to open and botellas bottles 4. Fly swat from matar to kill and moscas flies 5. Nail clippers from cortar to cut and uñas nails 6. Lawn mower from cortar to cut and cespéd lawn 7. Grasshopper from saltar to jump and móntes mountains 8. Body guard from guardar to guard and espaldas back 9. Four wheel drive from todo all and terreno countryside 10. Chain saw from moto motor and sierra saw.

= POWERWALKING helps the heart use oxygen more efficiently, so it doesn’t work as hard to pump blood. Aim to powerwalk at least 30 minutes most days and try increasing speed or distance to keep challenging your ticker.

When it comes to health advice, mothers-to-be think their own mothers know better than the medical profession, according to a University of London study. had read on the internet that caffeine could cause miscarriages in the first few weeks of pregnancy, but she finally followed her grandmother's advice that tea could help relieve morning sickness – she said it actually did help. The researchers said taking all the guidelines too seriously

leads to anxieties. They pointed out that lack of selfconfidence also can lead to worry about “doing the wrong thing” which, they said, is potentially more harmful than taking the odd glass of wine or eating soft cheese. A spokeswoman for the baby charity Tommy's, said women had to "strike a

balance" about what advice they took. She said mums and close friends often have first-hand experience and tips that are helpful, but stressed that if any mum-tobe is worried about anything during their pregnancy they should seek medical advice without delay.

RESEARCH

Don’t worry about being short People of normal height or taller are inclined to assume that being short causes a lot of problems, but most assumptions about short people are just that: assumptions. Here are some facts. –Children who are naturally short are no less socially competent or intelligent than taller ones. –Being short was no deterrent to the likes of Yuri Gagarin, who, at 5’ 1”, was the first man in space; the actor Danny DeVito or the pop singer Prince, both 5’ 2”. –Short people can run countries (though not necessarily well): Napoleon, Caesar, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Franco.

–Being short is no impediment to financial success: millionaire and former presidential candidate Ross Perot, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, also a millionaire. These examples come from an informative new book, “Short: Walking Tall When You’re Not Tall at All” (Roaring Brook Press), written especially for teenagers by New York Times journalist John Schwartz (5’3”). However, Mr. Schwartz advises youngsters to maximize

their growth potential by eating healthy meals that include protein (meat, chicken, fish and soy versions thereof ) and plenty of fruit and vegetables, drinking milk instead of soda, and getting regular weightbearing exercise to stimulate the growth plates in their long bones. He said there is no evidence that being short is a terrible problem for people or that it predicts a second-rate life. He concludes, “You don’t have to be psychologically burdened by being short.”

= POTASSIUM-RICH FRUITS and vegetables are an important part of any blood pressure–lowering programme. Aim for potassium levels of 2,000 to 4,000 mg a day. Top sources of potassium-rich produce include sweet potatoes, tomatoes, orange juice, potatoes, bananas, kidney beans, peas, cantaloupe and honeydew melons, and dried fruits such as prunes and raisins. = DROP SALT INTAKE to 1,500 mg daily - half a teaspoon of salt contains about 1,200 mg of sodium. Season foods with spices, herbs, lemon, and salt-free seasoning blends. Also watch for sodium in processed foods which is where most of our sodium intake comes from.

= GO DECAF. Caffeine can raise blood pressure by tightening blood vessels and by magnifying the effects of stress. When you're under stress, your heart starts pumping a lot more blood, boosting blood pressure, and caffeine exaggerates that effect. = DRINK HIBISCUS TEA. A recent study showed that the phytochemicals in hibiscus were responsible for a large reduction in high blood pressure. Many herbal teas contain hibiscus; look for blends that list it near the top of the chart of ingredients, which often indicates a higher concentration per serving.

People&Fashion More BAFTA’s for Wales

What will they come up with this time?!

The Welsh Baftas are to take place this Sunday May 23rd in the Donald Gordon Theatre at the Welsh Millenium Centre and simultaneously at the London Hilton. Cerys Matthews and Aled Jones team up for the first time to host the event.

According to the Football Association there will be “no official song to mark England's World Cup campaign in South Africa” this year. This will make it the first time since 1966 that no song has been endorsed as the “official song”. The FA added that their decision is because they “want to be fully focused on the game". However, football fans including New Order's bass guitarist who helped write the 1990's song “World In Motion”, have denied that a song distracts from the

proceedings, saying that it gets everyone behind the team and enhances patriotic support. Hook said, "I don't think it took people's minds off things," he said. "If anything, I think it focussed you more." Previous songs include a plethora for 1998 with Fat Les' “Vindaloo” and Baddiel and Skiner's famous “Three

Lions” (both of which are being reprised as a possible song for this year); plus “(How Does It Feel) To Be On Top Of The World” sung by The Spice Girls – but totally eclipsed by the other two – which was written by Ian McCulloch, frontman to Echo and the Bunnymen who appeared in Malaga last year. In 2002 Ant and Dec released “We're on the

Ball”, 2006 saw recordings from The Crazy Frog, Ricky and the Yorkshire-based rock band, Embrace. Of course, the most famous of all remains “Back Home” in 1970 sung by the players themselves. So, will it be “Vindaloo”, “Football's Coming Home” or another equally catchy ditty this time?

This year’s ceremony will bring with it a host of talent and celebrities in the Welsh media industry and see winners walk away with the coveted BAFTA Cymru mask in over 30 Programme, Craft and Performance categories – in addition to special award presentations of the Siân Phillips Award, Lifetime Achievement Award and Gwyn Alf Williams Award. The BAFTA Cymru Film, Television & Interactive Media Award Ceremony is Wales’ most prestigious ceremony of its kind.

Aled Jones says – “I am delighted to be invited to co-host this year’s BAFTA Cymru Awards with my good friend Cerys”. This year’s Awards sees 47 different productions compete for the coveted BAFTA Cymru mask. 16 Productions receiving 2 or more BAFTA Cymru nominations this year include Doctor Who, Y Pris, Caerdydd and Merlin.

U.S. to install 'black boxes' New cars and lorries would be required to carry black boxes to record crash information under a new series of proposals following Toyota's massive recalls. It would also require new safety standards related to brake override systems, the prevention of pedals from getting trapped in floor mats and vehicle electronics.

Brilliant!! Webber makes it two from two

Classic fun in the sun

Mark Webber led every lap of the Monaco Grand Prix, just as he had at Barcelona

Once out of the concrete jungle the route to Valtocado surprised many members

Even the interruption of four safety car periods couldn't put Webber off his stride as he stayed cool and pulled away again every time. Webber held his lead from pole position at the start of the race while team mate Sebastian Vettel got the jump on Robert Kubica and passed him for second. Kubica went into the first corner with Lewis Hamilton on his right and Felipe Massa on his left, but somehow kept both of them behind to keep his place. But Nico Hülkenberg’s race ended on the first lap when he crashed heavily at the exit from the tunnel. That brought out the safety car for the first time. This played into the hands of Fernando Alonso, who had started from the pit lane, after totalling his car in the last free practice on Saturday. He took the opportunity to swap his super-soft tyres for mediums, getting his necessary pit stop out of the way. When the safety car pulled off the drivers at the front held their position, Webber leading Vettel, Kubica, Massa, Hamilton and Rubens Barrichello, who’d made an impressive start to take sixth place. Alonso made some great overtaking moves, passing drivers of the new teams, spending several laps duelling with Lucas di Grassi before finally passing him at the chicane. The speed with which Alonso was working his way through the tailenders nearly caught out the leaders, with McLaren bringing Hamilton in to make sure he could stay ahead of Alonso. That triggered pit stops from the rest of the field, but no change of positions among the top five. Rosberg had to pit and ended up back behind team mate Schumacher. The second Williams crashed out spectacularly after 30 laps when Rubens Barrichello appeared to suffer a failure on the left-rear corner of his car, pitching the FW32 into the barriers at Massenet. That forced Vitantonio Liuzzi to brake hard in the HRT in avoidance, as parts flew off the Williams. Once it came to rest another part came off too, the steering wheel, as Barrichello chucked it out of his car! It then bounced on to the

A cavalcade of classic cars from SOL Classic Car Club arrived early at Marbella Golf and Country Club last week so that members could enjoy a leisurely breakfast before their monthly run. After April's decidedly inclement weather, drivers were relieved to see the sun streaming down on their cars' gleaming paintwork and visiting golfers avidly stared at the impressive display in the beautiful tropical gardens outside the club house. Eventual winner Mark Webber stays in front at the crucial first corner

racing line and was run over by a passing HRT. This brought the safety car out again, erasing a ten-second lead which Webber had built up. Shortly after the race restarted the safety car was mysteriously summoned again – this time apparently because of a loose drain cover. Webber survived a late scare when Jarno Trulli tried to decapitate Karun Chandok going into

Rascasse after riding the Lotus up his wheels before crashing down on Chandok's roll bar. That brought the safety car out for the final time, and the race ended in controversy as Michael Schumacher then passed Fernando Alonso on the final lap after the safety car went in. Webber’s win puts him and Vettel jointly in the lead of the drivers’ championship.

Red Bull have also taken over the lead of the constructors’ championship from McLaren, who only managed to get Hamilton’s car to the finish, after Jenson Button was forced to retire on lap 2 with an overheating engine. It emerged that a bung had been left over one air intake on his way to the pits, causing high engine temperature.

Led by a bright red 1984 Morgan, the cars then convoyed along the costa towards Mijas. Although the route inevitably took in some of the concrete jungle, past half-finished and empty urbanisations, drivers and passengers

flowers after the recent rains. The destination this month was SOL Chairman Qasim Shaikh's home in Valtocado, just outside Mijas Pueblo. Lunch was a “bring and share” picnic which provided an amazing spread of food for very little cost (and there was enough to fill umpteen “doggy bags” afterwards!). The Club is very aware that running classic cars in the current recession can prove a very expensive business for some members and is trying to offer a range of activities suited to every pocket. Classic fun need not be prohibitively expensive! Guests, and new members are always welcome at Club nights and events. Have a look at

England stormed to a sevenwicket victory over Australia at the Kensington Oval to break their 35-year duck in International Cricket Council tournaments.

groundstaff struggled to fix a glitch with the sightscreen. Kieswetter returned to crunch the very next ball, from Dirk Nannes, past cover for four.

Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen's stand of 111 helped them cruise past Australia's 147 for six – with three full overs to spare. Kieswetter (63) hit six fours and a six in his 40-ball 50 and Pietersen was almost as dominant in a run chase which became a no-contest long before captain Paul Collingwood clubbed the winning runs.

With the match as good as won, Pietersen got underneath a big hit at Steven Smith to hole out to David Warner's ultra-safe hands – and Kieswetter went in bizarre circumstances, lunging away to leg to give himself room, leaving himself unable to reach a delivery from Mitchell Johnson which clattered into off and middle-stump.

Both of England's secondwicket pair got out before the end, appropriately allowing Collingwood to shepherd his team to the previously elusive silverware. Australia, who were previously unbeaten in

Jubilant England after their victory, well worth the wait

this tournament, stumbled disastrously to eight for three in the third over after being put in on a pacy pitch. David Hussey (59) oversaw a well-crafted recovery. But England had taken a telling advantage, and were in no mood to let it slip this time against the old enemy. Hussey shared a fifthwicket stand of 50 with Cameron White and also combined to good effect with

his brother Michael to help add 55 in the last five overs. But the resulting total never looked enough, and in the end England made it seem woefully short. Their only minor moments of discomfort came with an early departure of their own – Michael Lumb spearing a catch to mid-on off Shaun Tait – and then an embarrassing five-minute hiatus for the organisers as

It made little difference, though, as Collingwood and Eoin Morgan completed a simple task with minimum fuss and to much adulation from a sell-out crowd.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The European Tour returned to the Majorca Open last week, the tournament was held at the Pula Golf Club in the south-east of the island which has changed dramatically. Spanish legend Jose-Maria Olazabal has worked his magic and has produced a really tough layout for the professionals, so much so that the final leading scores were seven under par for Peter Hanson of Sweden and Alejandro Canizares of Spain. Hanson had to overcome a two shot penalty for a double hit on the twelfth but rallied with birdies at fifteen and seventeen to reach the play-off, and triumphed at the first extra hole when Canizares could only make a bogey. The next C.O.G.S. outing this Saturday is being held at the short but tricky Cabopino course at 12.00 hrs, for all those who need transport the usual convoy will leave from Leslie’s Bar at 10.30 hrs Saturday. Any members who have not yet entered their name should drop down to Leslie’s Bar and sign up. It is a busy week coming up as there is also a charity day on offer on Tuesday 25th May in aid of Cudeca with a 10.30 am start at Antequera. Teams of four are invited to support this worthwhile cause by signing up at JK’s bar in Coin for the extremely good price of 30 Euros including buggy and tapas. Until next time keep your head down. Dave.

Barca hopeful on Villa & Cesc Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste has revealed they are close to signing David Villa and remain hopeful of landing Cesc Fabregas. Newly-crowned Primera Liga champions Barca are keen on signing Valencia ace Villa and Arsenal schemer Fabregas as they look to strengthen their squad for next season.

Staying Up!! Malaga beat the drop Gay sets Malaga went into this game knowing a win or at least a draw could save their La Liga status. Malaga 1-1 Real Madrid Malaga started brightly and almost unbelievably went 1-0 up. After a break down the right flank Felipe Caceido's quick thinking released Duda with a defence-splitting back heel which the Portuguese took in his stride before slotting calmly past Casillas. The Rosaleda erupted, and spectators were on tenderhooks as Madrid pressurised – with chances falling to Ronaldo and Higuain forcing Manua into making a great save. Madrid's Van Der Vaart went close with a good overhead effort. The lively Van der Vaart eventually found the net two minutes into the second half, converting Marcelo's pass from the left of the area. On the hour, Van der Vaart went close again with a shot from distance and a minute later Ramos nodded Granero's corner over the crossbar. By now

new mark on street Tyson Gay set a new world record for the straight 200m with a stunning run at the Great City Games in Manchester.

Fans and players celebrate staying up

Malaga were struggling to contain their opponents and it was only the continued efforts of Munua that denied Granero moments later. The Uruguayan goalkeeper continued to preserve parity with further saves from substitute Karim Benzema and Van der Vaart, while Selim Benachour almost stole it for Malaga nine minutes from time.

Malaga finish one point above the relegation zone. At the end fans rushed on to the pitch to celebrate a great end to a tough season. But at least they will be able to enjoy their summer break, while the unlucky teams that are going down are: Tenerife, Valladolid and Xerez. Barcelona are the La Liga Champions for the second successive season, finishing on 99 points.

The draw, while academic for Real's title bid, helped

Texan Smith, who won gold at the 1968 Games in Mexico City, was trackside to witness Gay's efforts into a headwind and said: "It was a great race." On the specially constructed track, Gay clocked a phenomenal 9.88 in the opening 100 metres and despite tiring legs, finished up with the second 100 metres in 9.53.
