Queen’s Speech - UK News

Cameron sets out blueprint for UK David Cameron yesterday hailed the legislative programme set out in the Queen’s Speech as a radical programme for a radical government. The prime minister said the Coalition government’s plans were the first to be guided by national, rather than party, interests, and attacked Labour for not apologising for the "appalling mess" it had

WORLD Well, goodness me!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

The bank that I was whingeing about last week actually did what it was supposed to do – and at no cost to us. So, well done them! Just for a last whinge about banks here (for now, that is): why do they keep changing the staff? We had a great manager at Caja Rural de Granada in Los Boliches but they had a change around and he's gone. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the new one but it means I've got to get used to someone else. Whatever you're doing Antonio... we miss you! Thank God we've still got Charo at the moment. I know it doesn't sound like it most of the time but I am really an optimist. I am optimistic even about our campo camino being repaired one of these days. It's the council's responsibilty but, if you ask them why it's still full of potholes, they say they're waiting for “the machine”. What machine? Is it the JCB that sits outside my office (a no parking area, by the way) while its driver goes for a coffee and a chat with his mates three times a day? I have to admit that I've only ever seen one council JCB so maybe that's the answer – coffee and chat comes before work. Maybe I and a load of other people should send the council the €300+ repair bills for our cars that have been damaged through lack of road repairs. But then, expecting payment would be being a bit too optimistic, wouldn't it?

Cameron sets out blueprint for UK The Queen's Speech included major plans to reform schools, police, welfare and Britain's political system - but the Queen said cutting the budget deficit and restoring growth would be the new government's "first priority". Unveiling the 22 bills that set out in detail what Prime Minister David Cameron hopes to achieve over the next 18 months, the Queen said: "My government's legislative programme will be based upon the principles of freedom, fairness and responsibility. The first priority is to reduce the deficit and restore economic growth." The government had already revealed on Monday the details of plans to cut £6.2bn in spending this year, and there were few surprises in the 22 Bills and one draft Bill, which had been widely leaked to newspapers. Flagship measures include scrapping ID cards and the next generation of biometric passports and a Freedom (Great Repeal) Bill regulating the retention of DNA and the use of CCTV cameras among other measures.

Education reforms include making it easier for parents and other groups to set up "free schools" outside of state control. A Welfare Reform Bill will simplify the benefits system, and the state pension age could be increased to 66 sooner than the present 2024 timetable as part of measures to pay for restoring the link between state pensions and earnings. There is also a potentially controversial bill to partprivatise the Royal Mail and legislation to allow elected police chiefs in England and Wales and create a dedicated border force as part of a "refocused" Serious and Organised Crime Agency. The sale of alcohol below cost price would also be banned under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill, and councils and police would be given greater powers to close down trouble-making clubs and bars. There are also proposals to place an annual limit on non-EU immigration, and plans to "remove barriers to flexible working and promote equal pay". There

are also pledges to slash the number of quangos and cut bureaucracy to save £1bn a year. One of the most complex and controversial bills covers parliamentary reform, a subject on which all parties agree action is needed after last year's expenses scandal. As well as giving the public the right to throw out corrupt MPs between elections, it will legislate for a referendum on changing how MPs are elected from the current first-past-thepost system to the Alternative Vote method.

David Cameron in the Commons after the state opening of parliament yesterday.

Commons over the plans. Ms Harman criticised the government's plans to cut support for the young unemployed through the Future Jobs Fund and planned increases in university places, both of which were announced on Monday, saying it was "a cut to our capacity for future growth".

Other plans include the restoration of the link between the state pension and earnings and a referendum on any treaty proposing more powers for the EU. The packed programme for government reflects the fact that this Queen's Speech programme will run until autumn 2011, rather than the usual 12 months, because of the general election.

She also said Labour would not back the coalition’s plan to increase the percentage of Commons votes needed to back the dissolution of Parliament to 55%. She told MPs: "These coalition parties, lacking confidence in each other, are already preparing for the day when

Mr Cameron will now begin several days of debate in the

they shrink back from their loveless embrace." Public sector union Unison warned that the plans would undermine vital public services by opening them up to greater private sector involvement. General secretary Dave Prentis said: "The plans set out in this dismal Queen's Speech spell danger for public services, and for economic growth and offer little hope to either the young or long-term jobless." Caroline Lucas, the first Green MP at Westminster, dismissed the Queen's Speech as a "pack of halfhearted measures".

Goverment employees demonstrate against Spain's austerity policy.

PM takes a salary cut

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says reforms of Spain’s "dysfunctional" labour market, and its banking sector must be stepped up because cuts announced last week did not go far enough to ensure the country's recovery. The comments came after Spanish authorities had to rescue regional lender Cajasur at the weekend. The country's deficit, that is, what the government has to

borrow to pay for public services due to insufficient tax returns and other revenues currently equates to 11% of Spain's economic output. This is

substantially higher than the eurozone ceiling of 3%, another of the IMF concerns which also include the property market slump, heavy indebtedness

in the private sector, and weak productivity and competitiveness. Spain is also having to cope with unemployment of more than 20%.

Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba confirmed the DNA identification on Monday and told reporters: “I dare say that all those who participated in the murder of Fernando Trapero and Raul Centeno are in jail and it only remains for the French police to place each one at the scene of the crime, something I am confident they can do.” Five ETA leaders have been arrested in Francein the last two years. As of June 1st, Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will take a salary cut of 15%, or €1,149, reducing his monthly take-home pay to €6,515, which will amount to a saving of €6,898 by the end of the year. His three deputy prime ministers and ministers will take a similar cut, while secretaries of state will have a 10% reduction in salary. The pay freeze applied to top government officials in 2008 will continue until the end of 2011 at least.

Automatic shared Satan increasingly popular custody

The press last week met a calf called Got, which means "glass" in Valencian, the first ever clone of a fighting bull. A Friesian cow gave birth to the 25 kilo calf at a ranch in Palencia province. A spokesman for the Valencia Veterinary Research Foundation said it was hoped Got would have the same fierce traits

as his "father", Vasito. He said the scientific landmark opened the way for a "tissue bank" to save critically endangered species from disappearing. The spokesman said it had taken three years to find a

way to preserve what he called valuable bull genes, at a cost of €28,000. Got was created using a technique known as nuclear transfer, where DNA from the sire is inserted into cows' eggs to

create embryos, which are then implanted into surrogate females. The technique is essentially the same as that used in 1996 to copy Dolly the sheep, the world's first cloned mammal.

No bikinis or shorts please With the arrival of the warmer weather, pictographs have sprung up around Barcelona aimed at persuading people – mainly tourists – not to wander around the city wearing nothing but bikini tops and shorts (women) or just shorts (men). The pictographs for

the campaign Respecto para todos (Respect for everyone) have been posted in places most likely to be visited by tourists – museums, information offices, street markets and shopping centres. The City Council will send letters to stores, hotels, restaurants and bars

explaining the campaign and urging them to download the pictograph from its website to post it in their establishments. An ordinance which came into effect in 2006 stopped short of an outright ban on wearing scanty clothing in public places.

ARAGON. The regional government has approved a law that automatically gives shared custody to divorced couples. Both parents will have an equal say in their children’s education and also equal visiting time. However, a judge can overrule the shared custody if he/she feels it is not in the child’s best interest. Aragon is the first region to pass such a law.

MADRID. According to the Red Iberoamericana, a group that keeps track of sects, Satan is alive and well in Spain, which he calls the “land of Mary”. The group reports that the number of Satanic sects has doubled in the past 20 years, from 30 in 1991 to 61 this year, with most of the increase happening during the past three years.

SALAMANCA. A joint survey by the University of Salamanca and the Centre for Sociology Studies in Lisbon has found that just under a third of the Spaniards questioned would favour a union with Portugal along the lines of the European Union. There was more support for the idea in Portugal, where nearly 50% of those questioned said they favoured such a union.

JACA, HUESCA. The Guardia Civil’s Mountain Service rescued 504 people in 235 operations between January and April this year, 34 more than in the same period last year. So far, there have been 40 deaths, 129 wounded, while 355 people were rescued unharmed. Most of the operations were in the mountains, but people were also rescued from rivers and caves.

Alse Young was the first person executed as a witch in the American colonies

Britons doubtful about climate fears Climate change was such a popular priority in Britain that in 2008 Parliament passed a law on targets for emissions cuts. However, since then Britain has become a home base for a group of sceptics who seem to have convinced many people that the threat of warming is vastly exaggerated. A survey in February found that only 26% of Britons believed that climate change is happening and is largely man-made, down from 41% in November 2009. And London’s Science Museum has announced that a permanent exhibit to be opened later this year will be called the Climate Science Gallery, not the Climate Change Gallery as

had been planned. Perhaps sensing that climate is now a political non-starter, David Cameron was “strangely muted” on the issue in a recent pre-election debate, as one newspaper put it, although previously it had been one of his passions. And a poll in January of the personal priorities of 141 Conservative Party candidates tipped to win seats in the recent election found that reducing Britain’s carbon footprint was the least important of the 19 issues presented to them. Activists say such attitudes

will make it harder to pass legislation like a fuel tax increase and to persuade people to make sacrifices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A spokesman for Greenpeace told a meeting of environmentalists in London last month that the shift to the side of the climate sceptics is a big problem. He said it was happening in the context of overwhelming scientific agreement that climate change is real and a threat, “but the poll figures are going through the floor.” The downward trend is happening elsewhere in

the western world, perhaps because the unusually cold winter in Northern Europe and the United States may have reinforced a perception that the Earth was not warming. However, data from the US agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has shown that globally, this winter was the fifth warmest in history. The good news is that since becoming prime minister, David Cameron has vowed to run “the greenest government in our history”.

Police storm drug lord's stronghold Jamaican security forces hunting for alleged drugs lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke finally stormed his Kingston stronghold in Tivoli Gardens on Monday after laying siege to the area for several days. Coke's supporters are fighting to stop his extradition to the US where he is wanted on drug and gun-running charges. A state of emergency was declared in parts of Kingston on Friday after several police stations were attacked. Warning US citizens against travel to Kingston and the surrounding area, Washington said access roads to the airport were being blocked at intervals by gun battles between criminal elements and police. It also warned that the unrest could spread beyond the general Kingston area. A soldier was killed in the latest

fighting, following two police deaths on Sunday. At least one other soldier and six police officers received injuries on Sunday, and there are reports of bodies lying in the streets. Most residents stayed off the streets as the country observed its Labour Day holiday. Tivoli Gardens, the constituency represented in parliament by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, is the stronghold of Coke, 41, who describes himself as a community leader. His supporters see him as a man who is fulfilling a role that the government does not, such as giving them money to support their children. But

the US justice department accuses Mr Coke of being one of the world's most dangerous drug barons. He is said to lead a gang called the Shower Posse - owing to the volume of bullets

used in shootings - and operate an international smuggling network. The gang has also been blamed for numerous murders in Jamaica and the US.

Child rape trial raises questions about justice The trial of two young boys who have been convicted of attempted rape has raised questions about the way children are dealt with by the criminal justice system. Although attempts were made to make the court environment less intimidating for the defendants - the judge and barristers removed their wigs and gowns, and the boys were allowed to sit alongside their mothers in the well of the courtroom rather than the dock - they often appeared bewildered, observers said. A spokesman for the charity Kidscape said it was "absurd" to try the boys in "an adversarial court situation". He said it should have been held in camera with no publicity at all, adding “the whole thing is horrific." "In camera" is a

legal term for cases which are held in a judge's private chambers, from which the press and public are excluded. The NSPCC also raised concerns that the eight-year-old victim was too young to cope with cross-examination. A spokesman said children often struggled to cope with cross-examination, and in particular with leading questions, used by barristers to steer those being quizzed. He said prerecorded interviews, rather than live cross-examination, should be used where children are required to give evidence in court. The boys have been placed on the sex

offenders register ahead of sentencing later. Both were cleared of rape. Speaking about the trial after the verdict was delivered, the judge, Mr Justice Saunders, said that at some stage he would be sending his views about the

procedure to those who are most concerned with it. He said: "That is not to indicate that there is anything wrong, but we should do everything we can to improve how we deal with these things by looking at the lessons that we can learn."

Prisoner swap proposed

UN children’s camp torched

IRAN. Intelligence minister Heydar Moslehi has proposed a prisoner swap for the release of three US hikers arrested last July near the Iraq border and accused of spying. The mothers of Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal were allowed to meet them last week. A US state department spokesman said it was not contemplating any kind of a prisoner swap.

GAZA STRIP. Masked gunmen have attacked a UN summer camp being set up for children, burning tents and destroying equipment, UN officials have said. No group has claimed responsibility, but officials suspect it is the work of Islamic extremists. The camp is one of several that offer a summer programme of arts and sport for some quarter of a million children.

Amazon loggers arrested

Prisoners win concessions

BRAZIL. Police have arrested at least 70 people suspected of illegal logging in the Amazon - including Matto Grosso environment officials who are accused of providing false documents that helped the loggers avoid controls on illegal deforestation. Loggers, landowners and forest managers have also been charged. Police estimate that the illegal logging operation has caused damage amounting to about $500m.

CUBA. Dissident Guillermo Farinas, on hunger strike since February, told reporters that the government has relaxed the prison regime for political detainees after talks with Roman Catholic leaders two weeks ago. Prisoners held far from their homes will be moved closer and sick inmates will be admitted to hospital. Havana did not comment on the news, but a Church source confirmed it.

Dunkirk spirit remembered An offical reconstruction of the famous Dunkirk evacuation this week marks the 70th anniversary of one of the key events in the Second World War. But one Gloucester based “little ship” is unable to make her way back to Dunkirk for the commemorations because of lack of funding. Queen Boadicea II played her part in rescuing troops under siege from the advancing Germans. She is now a pleasure boat at the National Waterway Museum at Gloucester docks and the museum is unable to raise the £15,000 needed to take the vessel to the celebrations. The evacuation, codenamed Operation Dynamo, rescued a total of 338,226 soldiers - both British and French between May 26th and June 4th 1940, using a hastily assembled fleet of 850 boats. Some soldiers were rescued by 42 British destroyers and other large ships. And thousands

more were carried back to England by the famous “little ships of Dunkirk” - a flotilla of around 700 merchant marine boats, fishing boats, pleasure craft and lifeboats - the smallest of which was the 15 foot Tamzine, now in the Imperial War Museum. The grave plight of the British Expeditionary Force and the French allies led to people throughout the country praying on May 26th for a miraculous delivery as churches united that day throughout Britain. The stranded troops were strafed by Luftwaffe attacks and the rescue was carried out under extreme conditions - for every seven soldiers who escaped one man was left behind as a prisoner of war. But despite the loss of weapons and vehicles, the majority of the soldiers returned safely in what Prime Minister Winston Churchill described as a “miracle of deliverance”. And the words “Dunkirk Spirit” entered the English language.

important cases, and that their elimination would save the Junta de Andalucia the cost of paying hundreds of officials, secretaries and lawyers who deal with them.

Minister praises local universities Education Minister Ángel Gabilondo said on Monday that he was very impressed by a project presented by the Universities of Malaga and Seville aimed at converting them into campuses of international excellence, which the minister described as “extraordinary”. He said only two other universities in Spain – in Madrid and Barcelona – had achieved a level of

recognised excellence “with the help of the millions of euros needed to do so”. Speaking at a

conference in Malaga, he said he believed the project would generate a lot of wealth in the region.

He said investing in education was expensive “but not investing is even more expensive”.

Catholic sex abuse claims shock Cordoba Two witnesses appeared in court last week to testify against two members of the Franciscan Brothers of the White Cross and a former employee of the home they run in Cordoba, who are on trial for sexual abuses committed against people in their care, most of whom suffer from mental problems. It is the second case to emerge in recent weeks, the other involving a Carmelite monk in the eastern part of the country. The religious order has been running care homes across Spain for almost 50 years, but this is the first time it has been involved in allegations of sex abuse. The two cases have also

sexual abuse by Catholic clergy and accusations of an institutional cover-up. Since 2001, Spain has reported 14 confirmed cases of clerical sex abuse to the Vatican. The two latest cases came as Pope Benedict visited Portugal

where he made his strongest comments yet about the abuse scandal that has rocked the Church. The Cordoba court will now consider the evidence, and Church officials have said they will co-operate.

to trafficking in drugs, weapons and vehicles. A police spokesman confirmed that it was an ongoing operation but would not give more details. It is believed that the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency has worked closely with Spanish police in the operation.

Former mayor faces jail sentence The prosecution has asked for a four-and-a-half year jail sentence and a 25-year ban from politics for the former Socialist mayor of Torrox, Francisco Muñoz, who has been charged with urban prevarication and violating town planning regulations by authorising the construction of five houses on land not suitable for building.

The centre first came under scrutiny last October when an anonymous letter led to the detention of a lay worker. He has since been charged with three counts of sexual abuse. More anonymous letters then appeared, and three other staff members are now under investigation. Unlike other countries like the Republic of Ireland or the US, Spain has featured relatively little in discussions about

The prosecutions said that the mayor and eight councillors approved the construction plans in July 2005 and the political parties then in opposition presented the law suit against them a year later. The prosecution is asking

The prosecution is also asking for three-year jail sentences for three local developers who have also been charged in the case. CajaSur gets €550 million bailout

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

After the Cordoba-based savings bank CajaSur failed to reach an agreement on a merger with Malaga's Unicaja by the end of last week, the Bank of Spain took over its management and injected €550 million from a special fund to keep the bank afloat. CajaSur, which was under the control of the Catholic Church, had been crippled by real estate-related losses of €596 million last year alone. A Bank of Spain statement said the objective was to ensure CajaSur “can continue to function normally and meet all its obligations

toward third parties.” It assured depositors and creditors that they could feel “totally at ease,” stressing that CajaSur accounted for only 0.6 percent of the assets of the country’s banking sector. CajaSur started merger talks with Unicaja last July, but the negotiations

dragged on and were finally broken off Friday, reportedly over how to share control and implement job cuts among CajaSur’s 3,100 employees. The bank's CajaSur’s demise came just two weeks after Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero agreed to work

with main opposition leader Mariano Rajoy to speed up the consolidation of the country's weakened savings banks. In March, Finance Minister Elena Salgado warned that a third of the country's savings banks faced solvency problems and needed to consolidate rapidly.

Larios kamikaze driver’s trial starts The retired Civil Guard who ran over several people when he drove into the Calle Larios pedestrian mall in August 2008 told Malaga’s Provincial Court when his trial started on Tuesday that “I wanted to die and to do some

damage before killing myself”. He said he wanted to do damage because it had been done to him. He said he had not intended to kill anyone, just “give them a few knocks which weren’t very

hard because I was only doing 80 kph”. The prosecution told the court that A.B.M., 45, “knew it was a pedestrian mall and wanted to run over all those who could not flee” and asked for a 40 year jail sentence for five charges of

attempted murder. The accused admitted he had stopped taking his medication for his depression but seven psychiatrists told the court he had been responsible for his actions despite his mental problems.

Priest steals church windows

ONCE man arrested

ANTEQUERA. A priest has been accused of helping to steal 17 stained glass windows from a local church, which were classified as one of the town’s cultural assets, after the Guardia Civil found them in a local antique shop. They also arrested the owner of the shop, the director of the Municipal Centre of Historical Heritage, and the alleged thief.

ALMERIA. The Guardia Civil have arrested an ONCE lottery ticket vendor who had reported the theft of a day’s takings amounting to €650. His description of the two men who held him up at a bus stop was so detailed for a blind man that they decided to investigate further. The man then confessed he had stolen the money himself.

Old style families Europol comes to Costa decline MALAGA. Figures from the National Statistics Institute show that just over half the families in Malaga province no longer consist of father, mother and two children. Single parents families, childless, gay and interracial couples are increasing as are families headed by separated or divorced women. The number of church or registry marriages has declined on average by 3% a year since 1991.

MARBELLA. Some 200 people involved in security in the European Union met last week to discuss the best ways to combat delinquency and improve the exchange of information. The director general of the National Police and the Guardia Civil, Francisco Javier Velazquez, said the three main problems facing EU security forces were home-grown and Islamist terrorism, organised crime and illegal immigration.

From hero to mobster

It is finally happening!

P

T

artido Popular general secretary Maria Dolores Cospedal gave us a new take on the Prime Minister on Sunday. At an agricultural fair in Albacete, she said: “The man who aspired to be Robin Hood, who robbed the rich to give to the poor, has morphed into the Sheriff of Nottingham, and is now robbing everybody to finance his government”. And she pointed out that your lies always come home to roost. One of the spectres the Socialist Party has used for the past six years to frighten people into not voting for the Partido Popular is that the PP would slash social spending if and when it ever returned to power. They won’t be able to use that threat now, not after having made what PP spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons called the “biggest cuts ever in economic rights in Spain’s history”.

M

eanwhile at a meeting of Socialist mayors in Elche, Alicante, the same day, Zapatero morphed from Chamberlain into Churchill. Wearing his most earnest expression, he told them “we have to respond this crisis – the worst in recent world history – forcefully and with determination”. He went on to assure the workers that he “was still on their side”, despite having told the unions and bosses last week that if they didn’t agree on labour reforms by the end of the month, he would do it by decree – signalling an end of his appeasement of the unions.

H

e assured the mayors there had been no deep change in his political philosophy but that in the current circumstances he had to put the country above the party, “to think of the future of Spain rather than the next elections”. Even there he wasn’t being original. Just a couple of days earlier, Speaker Jose Bono had said during a TV interview that it was “time for Spain to win even if it means we lose the elections”. However, one of the interviewer’s comments was about Churchill having offered nothing but blood, sweat and tears

in the war against Hitler, “but isn’t it a little too late to ask the Spanish people to make similar sacrifices. Methinks that Zapatero’s apologists are going to try to give him a Churchillian stature. They’d better get back to their history books. Churchill was a voice in the wilderness for years – generally regarded as a warmonger obsessed with Hitler – who when events proved him right morphed into one of the greatest wartime leaders a country could ever have had.

A

dmittedly the banks were – and apparently still are - one of the causes of the current crisis which is leaving no country unscathed. But the crisis in Spain was fuelled by the collapse of the housing bubble which happened before the banking crisis. So what did Zapatero do. He insisted it was nothing more than a “slowdown” and started throwing money at different social sectors – couples got a baby cheque, young people got a rent subsidy, etc – in the months leading up to the March 2008 general election. Three months later he finally admitted there was a crisis – which he blamed on the banks, even as he bailed them out – but then proceeded to hand out more subsidies as if there were no tomorrow. So he was not a lone voice in the wilderness who then stepped in to save the day. He did everything possible to bring on the worst economic crisis since Spain returned to democracy, which could engender the worst political crisis the Socialist party has ever experienced. Put simply, he brought it on himself.

he IMF has spoken, and many – mainly the labour unions – don’t like what it has to say. Let them kick and scream and hold massive strikes but austerity and labour reform are finally heading our way – I emphasise the “finally” because this is something that should have been initiated many months ago. It took Greece’s financial tragedy to set in motion the Spanish spending-cuts plan, and so far, the International Monetary Fund likes what is being proposed. Overall, it paints Spain ’s outlook as “weak and fragile.”

I

n a report released on Monday, the fund urged Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to introduce “a radical overhaul” of the job market, which would reduce duality and encourage permanent hires by lowering the current severance pay regime. Boosting jobs and wage flexibility would also require reducing the number of protected permanent job contracts, the IMF said. “The reform will need to be ambitious and comprehensive if it is to significantly change labour market dynamics and to avoid missing an historic opportunity,” said the report.

L

nd to top it all, at the Elche meeting on Sunday Socialist Party spokeswoman Leire Pajin said of her boss: “Nobody has made things easy for José Luis but he’s a long-distance runner, a great leader and above all a magnificent prime minister who will get Spain out of the crisis.” Where is that woman’s head?

abour overhaul is something the unions don’t like. They have tried to scare Spaniards by telling them they will lose job security, and will be opened to firings on the spot under any circumstance. This misleading is unfair. The unions don’t have any good reasons to put forward except they plum just don’t like change. We have not seen one acceptable argument coming from those labour bosses as to why Spain shouldn’t change the way people are hired and fired in this country. They want to conduct business as usual and hope this whole mess gets solved by itself.

W

M

A

herever it is, she’s a perfect example of this government’s barefaced hypocrisy. The Socialists do nothing but harp on about corruption in the Partido Popular but not even a peep about the fact that the NGO Pajin chaired – Solidaridad Internacional – got a government subsidy of €30 million when by law, the limit for subsidies to NGOs is €20 million – which is what the Catholic charity Caritas and the Spanish Red Cross got. We know what they do with their money, but what did Pajin do with hers? International Solidarity could mean just about anything.

British Consulate visit

R

epresentatives of the British Consulate will be visiting Coín on Friday, June 11th, to talk about benefits, pensions and health care entitlement. They will take questions from the audience and will also be available for private consultations. The meeting starts at 10.30 am in the Old Convent where space is limited so it would be advisable to book a seat with the Foreigners Office on Friday any time from 10 am to 2 pm.

ore than two-thirds of Spain’s workforce is on temporary contracts and most of these are young people between the ages 26-38. No bank will grant a mortgage or any type of loan based on this demeaning job arrangement. So, with no mortgage, there are no sales of new or existing homes, no construction industry jobs, and the economy will continue to putter.

S

o now, the two biggest unions, the UGT and CC OO, have announced a general work strike – possibly in June – to protest Zapatero’s measures, especially the average 5-percent cut and freeze on public employees’ salaries and reductions in retirees’ pensions. A government workers’ strike is already on the calendar for June 8th. Zapatero answered their call Sunday at a rally, challenging them to go ahead but there was no point of return. Germany, France and the United States had reportedly stepped in “to urge” Zapatero to introduce these bold reforms because it appears that the future of the euro and the threat of recession returning to America hedges on many things, one of the spokes in the wheel being Zapatero’s actions. Unfortunately, our Socialist prime

minister doesn’t have enough political and social support in his own country to back him. His traditional parliamentary partners, the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), the Catalan CiU centre-right nationalists, and the Canarias Coalition (CC), are threatening to abstain from voting on what they view are “political suicide measures” during Thursday’s session. The Socialists were hoping to get enough parties on the band wagon to send a political message of unity in an effort to calm investors and the volatile markets, but it doesn’t appear this will happen. The main opposition Popular Party (PP) has said it won’t vote on the belttightening package.

T

he unions, for their part, want to stir up trouble and push the government into a corner. Tensions are increasing and things are coming to a head, but I don’t think we will see the type of violence that has occurred over the past several weeks in Greece . When I first proposed more than a year ago my ingredients of what I believed was needed to offset this crisis – social dialogue, a national reconstruction commission representing all sectors, labour reform and a temporary firing freeze – they were simple offerings coming from a mouse-inthe-corner journalist. Since then Zapatero has tried to come up with a social dialogue and has so far failed. Talks also broke down miserably when the government tried to win over the PP to join a national emergency coalition. When they met on May 5th – their first meeting in 18 months – the prime minister and PP leader Mariano Rajoy only had one top item on the agenda, which miraculously was agreed upon: to speed up the mergers of the ailing savings banks. It was something to grasp on, but it wasn’t enough. And there is no telling when the next meeting between the two will take place.

N

ow the prime minister will meet with the unions and hopefully come up with some kind of labour reform package by early next month. Labour reform is coming, whether the UGT and CCOO want it, but it could also been an opportunity for those unions, which pride themselves on bargaining, to barter with the government a generous offer that would help them in the future instead of taking a pig-headed “just-sayno-to-reform” approach.

Rancho de la Luz / Los Pegregales Please could you print this so it can act as a WARNING for pet owners. We live in a real “campo” area near Mijas known as Rancho de la Luz/Los Pedregales, where for the last 15 years we have had our dogs and never had any problems with either our Spanish or English neighbours, who in turn have dogs. Two weeks ago, a neighbour’s Mastiff spent 3 days in intensive care having been “poisoned”. IA week ago we found our own dog foaming at the mouth and unable to stand ….she had to have her stomach pumped out and spent 2 days in intensive care and a further week very lethargic but thank goodness she survived. On the following

day, we found a large black cat dead on our driveway. On Sunday as usual, our neighbours were walking their two dogs along caminos in the campo and on returning home their large dog started to foam at the mouth and within 5 minutes was in the vets where he died shortly afterwards – in their initial panic, they couldn’t find their smaller dog and we all searched (finding a dead hedgehog) and eventually found him dead too. According to the vet, the possible cause could have been insecticides; however with the recent deaths, the consensus of opinion amongst us all is that some form of rat poison has been used which of course, we all know is highly

dangerous to humans .The neighbours who lost their two dogs in one day are making a Denuncia this morning and are hoping that the relevant authorities investigate to find out the culprit/s. I’d like animal lovers to be made aware of all this and not to allow their dogs out on their own in the above mentioned area without a muzzle and preferably on a lead. The heartache and pain of seeing your loved pet suffering is hurtful enough but to lose them because of someone else’s total lack of responsibility or “malice” ….I just don’t have sufficient words to say how despicable and cruel human beings can be.

DLS Fabrications go one step further Lloyd from DLS Fabrications is proud to announce the opening of his new factory in Alhaurin el Grande, and is shown here with his opening licence from the Town Hall. Lloyd says: “We have been here on the coast for over 14 years, had now outgrown our workshop in Mijas and needed to move into larger premises. It took me a few months to decide on moving, but I'm really pleased now that I have. Alhaurin has all the necessities we need around us i.e. paint suppliers, steel stockists, locksmiths and ferreterias. Also, with the new roads opened we can be in Malaga in 20 minutes and Marbella in approximately 35 minutes, therefore I can still be up and down the coast visiting my clients within the hour.” DLS have been fabricating security gates, window grilles, pool railings and all kinds of ironworks for years and have now added light engineering such as lathe works and milling. Fuengirola Astronomy Club The Fuengirola Astronomy club was set up over a year ago for people who have a passing interest in astronomy but were keen to learn a bit more about the subject. Most of the people who attend are very much amateurs, but some have bought their own telescopes and would like to have help in getting the best use from them. I have been giving PowerPoint presentations at each meeting at a very basic level but full of useful information covering various topics from the planets, the constellations, and the life of stars, galaxies and nebulae. After the talk – when the weather is clear - we go outside onto the terrace and set the telescopes up and people are invited to look at any planets that are visible, the Moon and any other interesting objects in the sky. I use a high powered laser beam to point out various constellations and stars.

Since advertising in The News we have had a great response from people, including boat owners, and urbanizations with sit-on mowers who can't find the part they need on the shelf so we now have the facilities to machine make all those small parts and components. DLS are now situated on

the Poligono Pedregales, Alhaurin el Grande in the road opposite the Peugeot showroom, just down the road from Mercadona. It is a very informal affair; we even hold a raffle ticket draw with the prize being a quality book about astronomy and bottles of wine for the runners up. The next meeting is tomorrow (Thursday May 27th) at 8.00 pm, the topic will be ‘the race into space’. I will be talking about the early space flights by the Americans and Russians and taking you right through to the Apollo moon

landings and beyond. We even have a life size Buzz Aldrin astronaut that you may want to have your photograph taken with! Weather permitting we will then go outside with the telescopes to see the rings of Saturn, Venus and Mars. The raffle prize is NASA’s Man on the Moon book. It costs just €2.50 to attend which includes your raffle ticket. We meet at 8.00 pm at the El Coto bar and restaurant which is along the Avenida de Mijas coming out of Fuengirola. Come off the N340 at the Corte Ingles exit and turn inland, the El Coto bar is on the corner of the second roundabout next to the El Coto supermarket, you can’t miss it. The El Coto bar is a fabulous setting for our meetings; it has a covered terrace with seating for about 50 people plus an outside seating area

surrounded by colourful plants. Many of the people who have been coming to the meetings have made an evening of it as the meals are excellent and the new owner Juan ‘speedy’ Gonzales certainly lives up to his name by making sure that drinks are brought from the bar. The chef, Diego, prides himself on his steaks which are bigger than the plates! The menu of the day has 10 starters, 10 main courses and even a choice of 10 desserts. The locals at the El Coto have just rallied around to get Juan to buy a 50” TV so that we can all watch the world cup in style on the terrace - wouldn’t it be great if it was England and Spain in the final! Hope to see you there. To keep up-to-date with Ken Campbell or to take part in any of his events or lectures, or for more information visit www.kencampbell.info

A different Sunday morning Last weekend, I got myself out of bed and went along to see what Mets Dog Training Classes is all about (writes Kym Wickham). With three groups covering beginners, intermediates and advanced dogs and their owners, all standards are catered for. I started off watching the puppies and other beginners and the look of sheer pride when they got it right was a joy to watch and that’s the dogs’ faces

I’m talking about! From tiny Yorkies to huge Mastins, the dogs really enjoy being put through their paces for obedience and agility. Mets trainers are all ex Met. Police dog handlers with years of experience between them. The classes are held in Los Boliches behind the Repsol station just off the motorway from 10 am , when they retire to the bar for a coffee and a bit of social time. Join them to help the children The purpose of the Foundation of Friends is to extend a friendly helping hand to children in need and, importantly, are registered with The Ministerio de Economia y Hacienda. Their aim is to engage the Expat and Spanish community in coming together to raise money for facilities and support to help children

who for a variety of reasons find themselves in difficulty. The Foundation has been created by a team of like-minded friends who wish to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate than themselves. Through these efforts they can not only help others, but also create a closer and deeper relationship with

Spanish friends by working and playing together to improve the lives of the children. Since their initial launch they have been working on building their profile both to the media and to the consumer to raise awareness and, of course help in helping the children. Why dogs chase cats Once long ago, Dog was married to Cat. They were happy together, but every night when Dog came home from work, Cat said she was too sick to make him dinner. Dog was patient with this talk for a while, but he soon got mighty tired of fixing dinner for them both after a hard day's work. After all, Cat just stayed home all day long. One day, Dog told Cat he was going to work, but instead he hid in the cupboard and watched Cat to see if she really was sick. As soon as Cat thought Dog had

left, she started playing games with Kitten. They laughed and ran about. Cat wasn't the least bit sick. Dog jumped out of the cupboard. When Cat saw him, she stuck a marble in her cheek and told Dog she had a toothache. Dog got so mad at her he started chasing her around and around the house. Dogs have been chasing Cats ever since. If you have a problem you can write to me at david@thedogman.net and those that might want a one to one consultation call me on 610 868 748.

Messing about on the river Well, the canal actually, through the middle of London. WRITTEN BY Jane Newman

f you can get on a plane, what with the ash cloud and BA strikes, you may be travelling to the London area of the UK. Of course, you can go and visit St Pauls, The Tate, The fabulous museums, Buckingham Palace and all the other tourist attractions but, what do you do for something a bit different? herever you land in the London region you can be sure that a train, tube or bus will get you to wherever you want to go so, for the purposes of a trip by waterbus along the Regent’s Canal you’ll need to get to either the Paddington Basin at Little Venice to start at one end of the trip or to Camden Lock at the other. hen I was a child, we always started at the Paddington end as it was easier for us to get there from Ealing. The stops you need are either Warwick Avenue on the Bakerloo line of the tube (that’s the brown one on the map) or Paddington, exiting at the end of main line platform

rom here the canal boat trips enter the 272 yard long Maida Hill Tunnel under Edgeware road. Regent’s Park was landscaped by John Nash for the then Prince Regent and opened to the public in 1838. Several bridges cross the river including one that is a restaurant. The most famous of these bridges is the Macclesfield or “Blow up bridge” so named as in 1874 a barge carrying gunpowder exploded as it passed beneath and the sound of the explosion could be heard all over London. he London Zoological Gardens straddle the canal on either side. You can disembark here and sepnd a very pleasant few hours wandering around this world famous zoo. First opened in 1828 The Zoo, as it is known to Londoners, is at the forefront of breeding programmes, and conservation and education work in the world.

Don’t even think about taking the car in as parking is severely restricted even on a Sunday. he Regent’s Canal, linking Little Venice to the Thames at Limehouse, was first opened in 1820, providing an important industrial transport route. Today, with its unique architecture, industrial history, wildlife and scenery, the canal offers an interesting view of London. Little Venice itself is a junction at the Grand Union Canal that is surrounded by elegant 18th century Nash houses whose white stucco facades form a striking frame for the abundant greenery and water. In the centre of the pool is Browning’s Island, named after the poet who lived nearby. Alongside the expensive houses live people in houseboats of all shapes, colours and sizes and you wouldn’t think you were in the centre of a huge city.

t the end of the trip is Camden Lock. Famous for its Bohemian atmosphere with plenty to look at, Camden lock has bars and cafes to enjoy every few yards with all manner of food available. amden Market was originally a hay market and the place where tradesmen would bring their horses to the blacksmiths and veterinary - no buses or tube in those days! There are some wonderful bronze statues here to look at. ou can call The London Waterbus Company on +44 (0)207 482 2550 for more information.

Charity golf day The eighth Niños Mariposa - Marina Banús charity Golf Tournament is taking place on Saturday June 5th in the Aloha Golf Club in Marbella in favour of the Butterfly Children Charity, DEBRA Spain with professional golfer Gonzalo Fernández Castaño, who is participating in the 2010 Spanish Open, being one of the main supporters of the event. Evanina Morcillo, manager of DEBRA Spain, explained how important it is for the Butterfly Skin Children's charity to count on the support of people like Gonzalo to raise awareness while Gonzalo expressed his delight in being able to help a charity that is specially dedicated to children. He will donate various prizes to be

auctioned on the day of the tournament and said he will encourage further collaboration from other players during the Spanish Open in Seville. The first president of Aloha Golf Club was himself the grandfather of a “Butterfly Child”, and the club says they are proud to have held this tournament since the first competition eight years ago, and that there will be fantastic prizes on each hole of the circuit something unusual in other tournaments. Finally, Don Fisher, founder of the tournament, explained that it has become a very attractive golf event for many international players who come to Marbella in June just to play Niños Mariposa. He

also announced that some of those players that have been touched by the charity’s cause will climb different peaks in Scotland in favour of DEBRA Spain and DEBRA UK. It is expected that Miguel Angel Jimenez, supporter of the tournament last year, who continues helping the charity by donating prizes, will be at the tournament as well.

Malaga Live Ska at Pógs organ recitals Every year the Cathedral in Malaga City hold a series of organ concerts that are free to attend but you will need to get there early to make sure of a seat as these are very popular events. The next recital in this year's series at Malaga Cathedral is this Friday, May 28th starting at 8.30pm and features the organist of the Malaga Cathedral and the choir of Santa Maria de la Victoria church (Malaga). The following recital in the series will be held on Friday June 4th at the church of Sta Maria de la Victoria, Plaza Santuario at 8.30pm and will feature the organist of the Malaga Cathedral and Orquesta de Camara de la Universidad de Malaga. Admission is free but you must get there early to get in. When King Ferdinand was laying siege to Malaga in 1487 against the Moors, he set up camp where the present beautiful Baroque Santa Maria de la Victoria church is. He put up a small chapel to keep the image of the Virgin with Child sent to him by the Emperor Maximilian of Austria. When King Ferdinand won the war, he attributed this to the Virgin. The monks of San Francisco de Paula, called Los Minimos, then built a small hermitage on this site. In 1691 the Conde de Buenavista had the small hermitage replaced with the big church one finds there, and this was completed in 1700. It now houses the image of the patron saint of Malaga, the Santa Maria de la Victoria (St. Mary of the Victory). At the basement of the tower in the little museum is the Pantheon of the Counts of Buenavista. This pantheon is one of the most unique in Spain because it is decorated with white plaster in the form of skeletons over a black background. The skeletons are there to represent death and to make one think about it and prepare for it, which was one of the frequent themes of the Counter Reformation. So, if you fancy turning up a bit early for the concert to have a look at this lovely church you won't be disappointed.

Looney Toonz is the coast’s all action Ska and Reggae band; they will be live and loud once again at Pógs this Saturday night May 29th. This six member band is a powerful musical hit, front man Gary Young in the role of Reverend Toon leads his musical flock ever onwards and upwards, giving their all Looney Toonz really do like to get the joint jumpin’. If you’re not exactly sure just what “Ska ” is, it is most of the good danceable cool songs you know most of the words to, from the late seventies onwards, from bands like Madness, Bob Marley, UB 40 and The Specials, you’ll know it when you hear it, its the - ah so that’s Ska experience. Loony Toonz play well with several new songs every gig, they mix in a little soul music from Ray

Charles and Jackie Wilson, and a taste of mod rock from the Small Faces, just to give the night a little edge. There’s a new cocktail bar at Pógs - this Hawaiian style bar is run by an Argentinian barman who reportedly serves the best Mojitas and the coolest cocktails in town, at the Irish Rock Pub, in southern Spain what else, for those with more simple but pure tastes, then the Guinness is at the other bar. Pógs is on Calle Lamo de Espinosa between the Pyr Hotel on the seafront and the main road running through Fuengirola. Open seven nights a week this is an excellent live music bar. For more photos of Loony Toonz in action go to www.picasaweb.google.co m/woodysfotos, click on Looney Toonz and then slideshow.

Rocking to raise funds The Triple S annual garden party to raise funds for charity will be held on Friday June 11th and will feature a tight new band from the Coin area. The sports and social club is based in Alhaurin de la Torre and has a lively range of activities on offer, and is always happy to welcome new members. Triple S members Ronna and Brian Clark throw open their house and garden to host the annual party, which will this year raise funds for the SOS animal refuge. This year it features live music from Bandana, a two man band who play great rock and pop from the 60s right through to the present day so something for everyone. The party starts at 8pm, goes on until late, and entry costs 10 euros. The event is always great fun so be prepared to enjoy an evening of top entertainment as well as helping to raise valuable funds for charity. For more information contact Ronna on 952 960 202.

Lots more at JK’s La Vida Por Delante this week (The Life Before Us) Madame Rosa is a retired Jewish prostitute and Auschwitz survivor who earns a meagre living by providing temporary accommodation in her Paris home to the children of the neighbourhood prostitutes. The building where she lives is populated by picturesque characters; the concierge M. Mimoun, Monsieur Charmette, Madame Lola, the Zaoum brothers,… Madame Rosa looks after twelve kids who sometimes receive visits from their mothers bringing a little money. But for Momo, an Arab fourteen year old kid, Madame Rosa is his only family. The Life Before Us portrays a sordid human landscape where Momo learns his life skills. From the naivety of his adolescence, he denounces racism,

materialism and reflects on old age, solitude and euthanasia. The Life Before Us, a novel by the writer and diplomat Romain Gary (1914-1980), written under the pseudonym Emile Ajar, won the Gouncourt award in 1975. A film version was made (Madame Rosa), and the book is surprising because of just how significant it remains today, and because of its touches of irony, innocence and love. Josep Maria Pou has based himself on the stage adaptation of Xavier Jaillard, which has recently been a success in France, to direct it. Its at Teatro Cervantes Friday 28th at 9pm, Saturday 29th at 8pm and Sunday 30th at 7pm. Tickets cost from €9. Call 902 360 295 or obtain from the theatre box office.

Robin Hood BY RIDLEY SCOTT Starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett "Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen..."well, in this latest reworking you can forget Richard Greene's famous telly series, there aren´t Merry Men as such, and no flashing grins like Errol Flynn - and definitely no tights. This is the fifth big screen collaboration for director Scott and star Crowe and there is not much rollicking merry making to be seen. There´s not too much of the Sheriff of Nottingham either - the

real baddie in this is a chap called Godfrey, played by Mark Strong with his usual dark, evil intensity. It's more of a prequel and more or less ends where the other versions begin (so maybe an option on a sequel?) Crowe plays bowman Robin Longstride who ends up returning to England with the crown belonging to the dead Richard the Lionheart and the identity of one of his deceased trusted retainers, Robert of Loxley. Robin carries out the task

entrusted to him by Loxley returning the fallen soldier´s sword to his father, and is asked to keep the identity he has assumed. He leads his men in a bid to roll back the corruption that is infecting the land under King John, staves off an invasion by the French and has some sparkling set to's with Loxley´s widow Marion (Blanchett). All in all, a sombre reworking with some terrific performances, and excellent film making.

Invictus BY CLINT EASTWOOD Starring Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon Morgan Freeman was born to play Nelson Mandela. He joins forces with South Africa’s rugby captain Francois Pieenar to unite their shattered country. An inspiring and moving true story told by Eastwood with his usual deftness.

Sherlock Holmes BY GUY RITCHIE Starring Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law A dynamic reworking in which Holmes is revealed as being as quick with his fists as with his brain. Jude Law lays to rest the bumbling Dr Watson persona created by

Nigel Bruce and Mark Strong (that man again) turns in his powerful performance of evil. This could be the first of a franchise and was a big box office success for Ritchie.

ver since I heard that Hollywood was remaking “A Nightmare On Elm St” I was psyched, I knew deep down that there was no way it would be better than the original but I had to see it. Well, I saw it and I thought I would be disappointed, but disappointed is too kind a word.

stylish baddy I have ever known. He is witty, charismatic and full of personality. New Freddie looks more like Lord Voldemort with a small case of acne; he points too much, he brings no atmosphere to the movie, his voice seems wrong and he just isn’t scary.

irstly, the original may not be the best movie in the world, however it was the 80s and at the time it was brilliant (and to me it still is). It was Johnny Depp’s debut movie, the characters were somewhat believable, the story was simple and Freddie had a wicked personality. My question is: why remake a movie if you can’t improve it? his new “A Nightmare On Elm St” seems to have too much going on. There are scenes and images from lots of other movies like “Halloween”, “The Ring” and every Freddie movie all rolled into one. I understand that the writers were obviously trying to modernize the story and give it a bit more depth, for which I will give them an A for effort. However, the execution was poor, the storyline seemed to overtake the characters, the acting was painful and the opening scene was way too long and boring. The opening scene should grab your attention and pull you it. This scene makes you wonder what film you’re watching. Yawn!

I

he best bit of acting is when the Asian guy knocks his head against the camera, which doesn’t have anything to do with the original. It’s hard for me to understand why the writers would try and incorporate more characters, when the main ones can’t even pull off this lame excuse of a movie. Are we supposed to be rooting for Freddie? he kindest way of looking at this movie, would be not to compare it to the original. So here goes, the main character doesn’t really appear or say much until about 40 mins into the movie, which is odd. The story is about a child molester who gets murdered by the victims’ angry parents, somehow he comes back and attacks his same victims (now older) in their dreams. There is no humour, nothing to make you jump, nothing original and it leaves you wondering what has Elm St got to do with it? Perhaps, a more suitable title would have been “Bad Memories at Badham Preschool”.

A new dawn begins and you will look at something with a fresh perspective. Your mind is functioning at an optimum level right now and buzzing with activity and ideas, even the most difficult of puzzles will be easy for you to fathom. Make sure you carry a pen and paper around with you so that your ideas will not be forgotten. Discoveries and travel are likely to draw you, even to the point where you may take a fearless risk to experience something new. It is the simple things in life that actually bring the most pleasure, that one simple gesture, a smile, a kind word spoken, a comforting glance. You have the ability this week to improve a situation that feels as though it is losing energy, all it takes is a simple move on your part to fire up the dynamic movement necessary to keep something important alight. Your intuition is extremely high and if you roll with it almost anything could occur. The home comes into focus and your essential needs are crying out to be met. You have been putting a lot of super-human effort into making sure something survives and lasts the test of time. Conflicts and challenges have been part of the course but have only served to help you make some key decisions in what you really want in place for the future. The nice thing to know is that your actions speak louder than other’s words and you will be respected for it. I know you feel like moaning and complaining and having a whine but this is precisely when you need to take some chances and get out there and mingle. Take any opportunity that comes along to have some fun it will allow your mind to broaden so that you can ‘see’ the positive in what appears to be a negative picture. Your feelings and passions run high and if this energy has an outlet it can greatly benefit relationships, if it doesn’t then you could feel restless. The bells in your head are ringing loudly as you start to separate the truth from fantasy or theories. People need to see action, they are fed up with hearing gossip and you are the one to make a difference, by acting upon what you know to be right. You have the stamina and determination to pull something round and succeed as well as being extremely seductive and attractive to others. There could be someone who is jealous of your popularity. The worries you have had recently are starting to reduce and this will help you to feel more in control and relaxed about where you are going. You are more attuned at the moment to other’s feelings and workloads and have an instinctive urge to fuss, rally around and make sure the pressure in their life is lifted. You could be asked to take the lead and organise an event or function, to network and bring together a range of people with similar interests.

LIBRA

There is a focus on security this week - check your insurance policies and make sure you are covered. Time could be spent in making your property safe and secure, building work may be undertaken. Relationship wise you will also be looking for more stability and commitment from another. You are basically covering all your bases to make sure you will be settled in the years to come, rd September 23 - you know life is always full of surprises and you wish to minimise the impact. nd October 22

October 23 November 21st

You may have felt powerless of late but you will have an opportunity to take back the reins and ride on towards your goal. It is a wake up call to focus on the right things that will direct your life in the way you wish. This is a good time to pull together with a significant other and make sure you are steering in the same direction. Your diet might need a look at especially if you have been rushed and not eating properly.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Last week I told you about the history and myths (or not) surrounding the humble broad bean. This week, here's a very traditional Spanish recipe for them that was probably also my mother-in-law's favourite – she couldn't get enough of them when she visited from Australia every year - plus a couple more.

Broad Beans and Bacon

(serves 4)

Ingredients: ● 2 handfuls broad beans ● 1 onion ● 1 pack lardons or a pack of bacon snipped into 1/2” pieces ● 1 tablespoon sunflower, olive or groundnut oil

Method ● Shell the beans into a bowl then blanche in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. ● Put a tablespoon of oil in a frying pan and cook

bacon lardons until soft and the fatty bits are golden. Scoop out with a slotted spoon and reserve. Chop an onion and fry until golden brown in the same oil you've just

cooked the lardons in. ● Add the bacon back in and the beans and cook until re-warmed through (about a minute or so only).

Broad Bean and Pasta Salad

(serves 4)

Ingredients: SALAD ● 1 bunch watercress or similar salad. ● 2 handfuls blanched broad beans (see above recipe) ● 150gr dried freshly cooked pasta – it will tell you on the packet how long to cook it for depending on what type of pasta you use ● 1 grated carrot ● Some toasted sesame seeds DRESSING ● 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 1 tbsp white wine vinegar, 1tsp whole grain mustard. ● Fresh dill or parsley – chopped.

Method ● Mix everything together in a large bowl except the dressing.

● In a small bowl mix the oil and vinegar to the mustard and beat until thoroughly mixed and

add the chopped herbs. ● Pour the dressing onto the salad and serve

SAGITTARIUS Are you using up all your inner resources and energy in trying to keep something going that is destined to fade away? Or is it worth the fight? These are the questions of the week for it is time for parts of your life to fade away and there are other parts that will lead you to new adventures and horizons. If you get your life in order then the answer may be clear and you will be able nd November 22 - to see the road before you. Someone may need you more than they are st December 21 letting on.

CAPRICORN There is a real connection between you and children this week; you will find much joy in being in their company. This is a busy period and there are lots of things that need to be done, so it is important to make sure you get done what you need to, so that things actually happen. It is too easy to just amble along right now thinking it will all sort itself out. You could be thinking of a change December 22nd of home or a move. January 19th

Grilled Lamb with Broad Beans and Rice

(serves 4)

Ingredients: ● 4 lean lamb chops ● 6 button onions (shallots) - quartered ● 3 cloves garlic - chopped finely ● 500gr fresh broad beans – shelled ● 250gr Basmati rice ● 2tbsp oil salt and pepper to taste

Keep your feet on the ground and your head out of the clouds so that you are ready to jump into action when called. You have a lot of support from those around you so don’t be worried about asking for assistance when you really need it. Finances may need a bit of tweaking and you may have to watch what you are spending your money on. An old friend may tell you things you have been longing to hear. A change of location or employment could be on the cards.

Method

You have nothing to lose if you stand tall and just speak your mind – so what are you waiting for, someone needs to hear something and if you are the one to tell them – then so be it. Everything in the heavens is moving in your favour, ask and you shall receive. All you need is a plan, which if you follow through, will be worth the effort, no matter how crazy it sounds to others; rewards are on their way into your arena.

● Fry the onions in the oil until soft. Then stir in the rice.

● Pre-heat the grill to moderately hot.

● Pour 750ml water over the rice mixture and cook

for about 15 minutes then add the fresh broad beans and cook until all the water is absorbed, making sure it doesn't boil dry. ● While this is cooking, grill the lamb chops until heated through and brown.

● If you want, you can add a little mint at this stage to the rice dish for a more Arabic taste. ● Put the rice into a serving bowl and arrange the lamb chops on top.

How to boost your brain power

Statin sideeffect risk pinpointed

Of all things we gain with age, a sharper mind isn’t one of them. Instead of being a steel trap like it used to be, it’s probably starting to resemble a colander. Life keeps pouring in, but you retain less and less of it. However, there are ways to forestall the decline. Here are some tips to boost your brainpower. = DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY: Few activities stimulate as wide a variety of brain systems as dancing does. It requires everything from coordination and organization to planning and judgement. Ditto for martial arts.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham have warned that some doses and types of statins are linked with a greater risk of adverse effects, including liver problems, acute kidney failure, muscle weakness and cataracts.

= EAT EGGS: They contain B vitamins, which enable nerve cells to burn glucose, your brain's major energy source; antioxidants, which protect neurons against damage; and omega-3 fatty acids, which keep nerve cells firing at optimal speed.

They found these unintended effects in an analysis of data from more than two million 30-84 year-olds from GP practices in England and Wales over a six-year period. In the case of kidney failure and liver dysfunction, they said higher doses of the drugs seemed to be associated with greater risk. They added that risks of sideeffects were greatest in the

= HYDRATE YOUR MIND: A 2006 study found that people who drank three or more 4-ounce glasses of fruit or vegetable juice each week were 76% less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than those who drank less. The high levels of polyphenols – antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables – may protect brain cells from the damage that may be caused by the disease.

first year of use. On the positive side, their analysis also showed no significant association between the use of statins and the risk of Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, blood clot, dementia, osteoporotic fracture, or many cancers including gastric, colon, lung, renal, breast or prostate. However, they stressed that for many people the benefits of

RESEARCH

statins outweighed any adverse effects, but the findings would help weigh up the pros and cons in each patient. They have devised a computer programme based on their findings to help doctors spot those most at risk. At the moment, anyone judged to have a one in five or greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease over 10 years is advised to take a

statin. A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation, said it was already known that a small number of people taking statins experience unwanted side effects: “However, for people with, or at high risk of heart disease, the benefits of statins far outweigh this risk. Anybody experiencing side effects while taking statins should speak to their doctor."

Men lie more Heart attack than women survivors A poll of 3,000 people found that men are more likely to tell lies than women avoid sex and feel less guilty about it. Researchers commissioned by the Science Museum found that the average British man tells three lies every day, equivalent to 1,092 a year. However the average woman appears more honest, lying 728 times a year – around twice a day – and mums are the people mostly likely to be lied to. Twenty-five per cent of men say they've lied to their mother, but only 20% of women admit to having lied to their mum. In comparison, only 10% of people said they are likely to lie to their partner. Men said that they most often lie to their partner about their drinking habits, whereas women use the line, "Nothing's wrong, I'm fine" most often to hide their true feelings. "It's just what I've always wanted" is the tenth most likely lie to be told to a

loved one by either men or women, suggesting that men and women are quite discerning when it comes to buying presents for each other. Women are most likely to feel guilty after telling a lie – 82% said it eats away at their conscience, compared to just 70% of men. Meanwhile, three quarters of those surveyed believe it's all right to fib if it's to save someone's feelings. The survey found that 71% of people think it is fine to protect someone by telling a lie. A spokesman for the Science Museum said the jury's out as to whether lying is a result of our genes, evolution or our upbringing. The museum in west London is launching a gallery called "Who am I?" which makes sense of brain science, genetics and human behaviour.

A US study of 1,700 who had had heart attacks has shown that they tended to avoid sex, because they fear it could kill them, and those whose doctors failed to talk to them about sex were most likely to avoid it. Experts say it is safe for heart attack survivors to start having sex again once they are capable of moderate exercise, such as climbing a few flights of stairs. A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation said patients should be given information about

resuming their sex lives when they were discharged: "Some people are scared of having sex after a heart attack in case the exertion causes another one, but this is extremely unlikely.” He said heart attack survivors could still enjoy a happy and healthy sex life, but added: “As with any other type of exercise, sexual activity can bring on symptoms if you've a heart condition so keep medication like your GTN spray or tablets nearby.”

= WATCH A COMEDY: Laughter counteracts stress and rolls back psychological ageing. A recent study showed that even the anticipation of a good laugh decreases the stress chemicals cortisol and epinephrine by 39% and 70%, respectively. = SWITCH OFF THE TV: A 2005 study found that each additional hour per day a person spent watching TV between the ages of 40 and 59 increased the risk of developing Alzheimer's later in life rose. = STUDY ANOTHER LANGUAGE: A Canadian study found that bilingual seniors kept the worst effects of the condition at bay four years longer than those who'd never ventured beyond their native tongue. Learning a second language appears to increase the density of grey matter in the areas of the brain that govern attention and memory.

People&Fashion Bosses bid to curb "sickies"

Diana's first official dress goes under hammer

Football's coming home - or it will be if Fabio Capello's England team have anything to do with it. And a new survey has shown that record numbers of workers in the UK are planning to take time off to watch the World Cup on television next month.

The iconic black dress worn by Lady Diana Spencer at her first official appearance with the Prince of Wales is expected to fetch up to £50,000 when it goes under the hammer next month. The 19-year-old wore the dress shortly before her engagement in 1981 and its image was flashed around the globe as she took one of her first steps towards establishing her position as one of the world´s most photographed fashionable women. The daring off-the-shoulder taffeta dress was deemed to be an unusual choice by the bride-to-be because black was worn almost exclusively

for mourning by the Royal Family. Diana adored the dress but lost so much weight in the run up to her wedding that she returned it to dress makers David and Elizabeth Emanuel to have it taken in. The dress makers, who designed Diana´s wedding dress, decided that the frock needed so much reworking that it would be easier to remake a smaller version for her. They kept the original

and only rediscovered it recently in a wardrobe. The gown now forms part of the Emanuel Archive of Princess Diana related material, formed of 30 lots ranging from actual clothes to sketches, invoices and other ephemera. It charts the transformation of the young, gauche girl into a global style icon and is expected to fetch a total of up to £175,000. A large part of the Archive focuses on the Royal

wedding dress and includes designs for the gown and bridesmaid dresses, the tulle petticoat worn by Diana for fittings and rehearsals and a photographic record of the making of the bridal gown, plus fashion designs for the Princess' official tours to Venice in 1984 and the Middle East in 1986. The Archive comes under the hammer in London at the Kerry Taylor Auctions, on June 8th.

Almost one in every seven people plan to see every game in the tournament a survey by cereal giants Kellogs has shown. But only one in 10 reckon they will be allowed time off to follow England’s fortunes as Capello's men bid to lift the trophy. Fewer than 18 per cent of UK workers watched all the games in the last world cup in Germany in 2006 but this tournament is reckoned to present the England team with a golden chance to go

all the way. The report says that only 1 in 20 were happy to use up their holiday time so bosses can expect a huge number of sickies to be thrown or any variation on the top ten work related excuses. Kellogs has said that it's taking to steps to persuade workers to stay onside by allowing its employees to watch the games in staff canteens.

Bernie’s illegal stowaways A group of illegal immigrants sneaked into Britain by hiding in Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone's convoy returning from the Monaco Grand Prix. It is thought the immigrants climbed on board while the vehicles were parked in Calais. The immigrants were arrested shortly after being discovered at Biggin Hill Airport.

“Force Blue”- Briatore’s yacht

Flavio Briatore doesn't have any luck these days, as he runs from one troubled situation to another. According to some recent reports in the Italian media, the Italian's yacht has been seized by the police. We're talking about the same yacht that Briatore used to host Bernie Ecclestone through the duration of the recently ended Monaco Grand Prix. Due to the fact that his new house is currently being built, Briatore moved in on his yacht with his wife Elisabetta and new son Falco. The 60-metre Force Blue was spotted in Monaco last weekend, during the F1 race in the Principality. According to the reports, police boarded the yacht on Thursday. “They had followed the yacht with high speed boats to the port of La Spezia, near the northern city of Genoa,” reported the GMM news agency, citing Italian sources. “Local prosecutor Walter Cotugno ordered the boat be impounded on the suspicion it is improperly registered as a charter. Investigators suspect Briatore has registered it in the Cayman Islands, with a hire price of 275,000 euros a week, in order to obtain a tax break and to avoid paying sales tax when anchoring in European harbours.” “They suspect the yacht is not chartered at all and in fact is used only by Briatore's family,” added the report. “In total we suspect around 4million Euro was evaded and 800,000 Euro in VAT and other taxes was evaded on around 700,000 litres of fuel.”

Stoner was fastest in the morning warm-up at Le Mans but crashed his Ducati on the third lap while running in fourth place. Lorenzo's teammate Valentino Rossi finished second to retain second place in the world championship, nine points behind the Spaniard. Honda's Andrea Dovizioso was third to finish followed by Stoner’s Ducati teammate Nicky Hayden at the historic Bugatti circuit. Rossi, the reigning champion, got off to a storming start in scorching sunshine, leading into the first turn ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Lorenzo. But it was Lorenzo who was showing more pace and he was quick to move into second spot and had Rossi firmly in his visor. Lorenzo grabbed the lead on lap seven only for Rossi to nip back in front on the next turn but the Italian was unable to produce a similar reply when Lorenzo went back in front

again on lap 10. He never looked like surrendering the advantage, finally crossing the line 5.672s up on Rossi, with Dovizioso forcing his way into third on the final lap. In the aftermath of the crash, Stoner, looking very deflated, said that the team had been working on the problem all season, and although it can be the quickest machine all weekend, come the race it seemed to develop a mind of its own. There were only 16 riders lined up on the grid for the MotoGP whilst the Moto2 series had 41 riders starting the race in a series that is going from strength to strength with some intense racing. With only 30 riders reaching the finish the race was

incident packed from the start, with 10 riders crashing out in the first 16 laps, Alex Debon getting a jump start penalty whilst leading, and ended with Toni Elias taking his second win in a row and with it the world championship lead. After his earlier penalty Debon clawed his way back up to 16th, just missing out on a world championship point. In the 125cc race Pol Espargaro took his second 125cc grand prix victory in a row after once again beating title leader Nicolas Terol for victory at Le Mans. Espargaro and Terol had held a 6 second lead over the fight for 3rd place and a rash overtaking attempt by Terol on the penultimate lap gifted the race to Espargaro. Terol, who began the race seven points ahead of Espargaro, is now only two points in front.

The unique petrol driven mower raced into the record books in front of an ecstatic crowd at Pendine Sands, in West Wales. Rider Don Wales, whose grandfather was the former world land speed record holder Sir Malcolm Campbell, smashed the previous 80.792mph lawnmower land speed record with an impressive 86.069mph on Saturday evening. And in the crowd to watch was the American holder of that record Bob Cleveland who set his world record in Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah.

qualified as a lawnmower which was one of the rules. The record attempt using the motorised grass cutter also has to ensure it is built primarily from lawnmower parts.

On show at the site of the attempt, which just happens to be home to the Welsh Museum of Speed, was The Bluebird, the classic car Sir Malcolm Campbell drove more than eight decades ago. It may now be joined by a lawnmower which could itself eventually become something of an icon of speed in the future.

Landis, stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for a positive drugs test, has finally admitted that he regularly doped as a rider. Armstrong claimed he was not surprised by the accusations as Landis had been threatening him for over two years. The claims were described in a lengthy statement by Armstrong's lawyers as "incredible concoctions". In all, Landis has accused 16 other riders and officials of breaking doping rules. Seven-time Tour de France winner Armstrong has often been accused by his rivals and critics of cheating but has never officially failed a doping test and has always

officials, facilitated by Messick, as well as Landis’ attempt to get his OUCHBahati team invited to the Tour of California. Armstrong did not release his replies to Landis. The emails from Landis also suggest that Landis was provoking Armstrong to file a lawsuit.

Lance Armstrong on the defensive

maintained his innocence. In an attempt to disprove Floyd Landis’ credibility, Lance Armstrong has released a month’s worth of emails between Landis, longtime Landis supporter Dr. Brent Kay and AEG Sports president Andrew Messick, the man in charge of the Amgen Tour of California. The sometimes confusing emails document Landis’ meetings with USADA

“I should also point out that this email trail will make a lawsuit after my public statements appear to be what it would be, a PR stunt, rather than what a lawsuit at the moment would appear to be,” Landis wrote to Armstrong on May 6th. Landis has admitted to experimenting with everything from blood transfusions to female hormones and, although he took full responsibility, he showed no remorse for his actions.

Khan, who lost his card last season and relied on a sponsor's invite to play at Wentworth, shot a final round of five-under par, to finish with a four-round aggregate of 278, six-under to take his second European title - he finished a shot clear of Luke Donald and Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed. Luke Donald, who went around in level par 71, needed to hole his shot to the 18th to force a play-off and he very nearly did it, one more bounce and it was a cert to drop. Khan, ranked 471st in the world, only found out he was playing on Monday. The 37year-old was realising a childhood dream - as a youngster he used to catch the train to Wentworth to watch the likes of Severiano Ballesteros from outside the ropes. Overnight leader Chris Wood's title hopes collapsed early in his round.

He had a double bogey on the third after driving into trouble and taking two in a bunker, he then bogeyed the eighth and ninth to move right out of contention. Khan, second in the championship in 2006, lost his card last season and was forced to go to European Tour Qualifying School, which he won, to regain it but this victory gives him a fiveyear exemption, a three-year exemption for The Open and a place in the WGCBridgestone Invitational and

WGC Champions tournaments. Beginning his round seven shots behind Wood, in 13th place, Khan had three birdies in the first six holes to be out in 32. After birdies at the 10th and 13th he dropped a shot at the par4 16th but a 20-foot putt at the last that rolled around the hole before dropping in got him to six-under. The seven shot swing is the biggest comeback in the history of the tournament, beating Maurice Bembridge's record of coming from six behind to take the event in 1974.

England’s Mexican wave goodbye to Wembley with a solid victory

DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again At long last the summer weather seems to be with us and in good spirits twentyeight players from C.O.G.S. made their way down to the coast last Saturday to tackle Cabopino Golf Club. I have always found the course to be very tight but if you plot your way round carefully and don’t rely too heavily on the driver it is possible to post a reasonable score. The greens this week were, however, really tricky and so the scores were slightly down compared to our normal standard. Top player this week with 32 points was Zak Sturgess and in second place was The News’own Geo Heading on 31 points. In third place with 30 points beating two other players by countback was Ollie O’Brien. The prize for the longest drive on the stroke index 1 fifth hole went to John Bamber and I was very pleased to win the prize for nearest the pin on the thirteenth - particularly as I’d found the water there the last two times I’ve played it! Nearest the pin in two on the tenth was won by new member Mark Edmondson so a memorable first outing for Mark. The team prize scores also reflected the diďŹƒculty of the course and the winning total of 92 points was gathered by Brian Millward, Chris Spoakes, Ollie O’Brien and Ian Hold.

The score flattered at 3 -1 but it was a far from convincing defensive display, as the late goal at the end of the opening half exposed, but Capello remained upbeat Robert Green made a case for himself on the night for the No 1 goalie spot but Capello still remains unconvinced. With the exception of one spilled shot, Green’s handling was clean and his kicking composed on a less than satisfactory surface. Green made two tremendous saves to deny Carlos Vela in the first half, spotting the danger and charging bravely from his line for the first, then a great reflex save. He will be the keeper putting pressure on David

James to start against the USA. Joe Hart came on for the 2nd half and kept a clean sheet but was far to slow to distribute the ball, and Capello let him know with a few choice words. With Carrick having another off night it was left to Milner to control the midfield which he did very well, with some good passing and ball winning. Walcott had a good game but the final ball needs to be more decisive, and with Aaron Lennon looking speedy and dangerous

Capello will be stuck for choice from these two. The concern over Ledley King still remains, as defensively he

New PGA champion Simon Khan missed out in a six-man play-o in qualifying for next month's US Open at Pebble Beach. A day after his Wentworth win, the Englishman made the play-o at Walton Heath for the last five US Open spots after six players qualified by right. But Khan was the only player not to birdie the first extra hole after the group were tied at the end of 36 holes.

The separate par 3 competition was shared by the terrible twins Zak Sturgess and Nig Bowler on 8 points while nearest the pins on the seventh and fifteenth respectively were Ian Hold and Ian Robinson (you don’t have to be called Ian to win with C.O.G.S., but it helps!).
