Worldwide anger over Israeli raid The UN Security Council yesterday (Tuesday) called for a "prompt and impartial” investigation into the Israeli raid on a flotilla of Gaza-bound aid ships and for the immediate release of all civilians. The UN condemned the "acts" which led to the deaths of at least 10 civilian activists during the operation. The raid has sparked strong calls for Israel to lift its three-year blockade of Gaza and led to huge protest marches on Israeli embassies throughout the world.

A compromise The UN statement was the result of a compromise between Turkey and the United States, with Turkey reluctant to water down its trenchant criticism of Israel while the United States, Israel's closest ally, wanted to temper the language used. The compromise took out direct condemnation of Israel and removed references to an

international investigation. It also weakened demands for an end to the economic blockade of Gaza that the activists were trying to break - a blockade now firmly under worldwide review.

n 02 - General News ICKHAM’S

WORLD Feria spirit abused...

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

This week I have to say a huge thank-you to Coin ayuntamiento from my car for fixing my campo road. It had been in a terrible state and to call it a road – there were more potholes than road – was a bit mad anyway. But, they came along early Saturday morning and chucked some tar in the potholes and, voila, hopefully no more broken cars. One piece of news in the paper this week has had us all up in arms here in the office. It is reported that young thugs in our neighbouring town of Alhaurin brutally beat a small cow so badly during their feria that it had to be put to sleep. I was going to say “what kind of animals can do this sort of thing” but, of course, animals don't do it. Humans do and using the excuse of being drunk just does not cut it. If they get so drunk that they can do that sort of thing to what amounts to a defenceless sentient creature, the answer is that they should not be allowed to drink any more. How do you make sure they don't? You lock them up in the Alhaurin jail, that's how! If they beat a person senseless to the point that they died, there'd be a very long jail sentence. This poor animal felt every blow too. I think the law is far too lenient with these sub-humans and they should get the same punishment as if they'd done it to another human being. Lock 'em up and throw away the key!

Worldwide anger over Israeli raid Turkey's reaction Turkey is furious at the commando raid, which targeted a Turkish ship and appeared to have killed mostly Turkish activists. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Israel's raid a "bloody massacre" and his foreign minister called Israel's actions "murder by a state".

Self-defence Israel's deputy UN ambassador Daniel Carmon said troops acted in self-defence when activists attacked them: "This flotilla was anything but a humanitarian mission." He said the

activists had used "knives, clubs and other weapons" to attack the soldiers who boarded the lead boat, the Mavi Marmara. Israeli military released on Tuesday footage of weapons it says were found after the raids on the ships. The cache allegedly included knives, machetes, catapults and improvised explosives and Israel claimed the weapons were used against navy personnel who boarded the ship. But campaigners said the soldiers opened fire without any provocation. Of the 679 surviving activists, who were taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod, only 50 agreed to be

voluntarily deported and more than 30 are being treated in hospital for their injuries. At press time, almost 600 people from several countries were still being questioned in detention centres across Israel, including around 40 UK activists. The Security Council has requested the immediate release of the ships as well as the civilians held by Israel. The ships were carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid in an attempt to break Israel's three-year blockade of the Gaza Strip. Israel says it will deliver the ships' aid cargo to Gaza by land and says it allows about 15,000 tonnes

of humanitarian aid into Gaza every week, but the UN says this is less than a quarter of what is needed. It also stressed that the situation in Gaza was "not sustainable". Shortly after the UN statement was released, several Gaza militants crossed the border into Israel and exchanged fire with troops, the Israeli military said. Two militants were killed, it said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he regretted any loss of life, but gave full backing to the action of the Israeli commandos. Mr Netanyahu cut short a visit to Canada to deal with the

growing crisis and cancelled a scheduled meeting in Washington with US President Barack Obama on Tuesday. The high profile aid mission - unofficially supported by Turkey - set off on Sunday. The flotilla comprised the Turkish passenger ferry the Mavi Marmara with 500 people on board; one Irish and one Swedish passenger ship, on which Henning Mankell, best selling author of the Wallender books, was on board, and three cargo ships. They were intercepted in international waters and commandos raided the Marmara after she refused to head to port.

Foreign minister defends Burka Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said on Friday that he respected the Lleida council s decision to ban the use of the burka in municipal public places but warned

that it was a false debate which the Spanish had not demanded. He was speaking to journalists after the opening session of the third forum on the alliance of civilisations in Rio de

Janeiro. Meanwhile in Spain the Partido Popular was asking in Parliament just how much the Spanish Government was spending on the alliance, one of the Prime Minister's key

projects in foreign policy. A PP spokesman said that the Government had spent more than 5 million euros on the project since 2004 with very little return on the investment.

The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, put forward a proposal on Tuesday “to ban the pre-election campaign by law”. PP spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons (pictured above) told reporters that the real election campaign last four months and the PP wants to confine to the period stipulated in the Constitution, which is the two weeks leading up to the

polling date. He said the party's proposals responds to a widespread feeling by the public that “politicians spend too much in these times of economic crisis”.

In a joint operation in Hendaya on Monday, the French police and the Guardia Civil arrested Juan Carlos Iriarte Pérez, who was conditionally released from jail in Spain last August after serving time for extorting money for the Basque terrorist group ETA. From evidence collected after the arrest of ETA's military leader and four others earlier this month, Iriarte appears to have been the man who arranged transport for ETA members inside France and between France and Spain. He was the 59th alleged terrorist of so far this year, of whom 19 were arrested in France.

Mercy mission hostages “well” Two of the three aid workers who were seized by Al Qaeda terrorists six months ago while on a mercy mission in West Africa are “well”, according to Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega.

King cheered, minister booed King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were cheered and clapped when they arrived with Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia in Badajoz's central Plaza José Luis Herera on Sunday for the Armed Forces Day celebrations. Minutes earlier, the same crowd booed Defence Minister Carme Chacon when she arrived with the Socialist premier of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernandez Vara. Cries of “Resign Zapatero” were also heard. It was the King's first public appearance since he was

operated on for a nodule on the lung on May 8th. Proof of his recovery from the operation came when he saved the Queen from falling as she stumbled on the step up to the dais. The previous day, some 50,000 people had turned out to watch a simulated rescue of hostages by regular

troops, tanks, paratroopers and Navy divers in the Guadiana river which flows through the city. During Sunday's ceremonies, wreaths were laid in memory of those who have died in Afghanistan and rescue operations in Haiti and other countries.

De la Vega told reporters: “The information that we have from the terrorists themselves and the mediators is that they are well”. Albert Bilalta, Roque Pascual and Alicia Gamez were seized as their convoy drove along the main coastal road in Mauritania on November 29th last year. Alicia Gamez was released on March 10th for health reasons. The terrorists had originally demanded the

release of Islamist prisoners in Mauritania but seem to have dropped the demand. The mediator, an official close to President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso, has visited the two men where they are being held in Mali several times but so far has failed to secure their release. It is the second longest kidnapping of Spanish nationals by terrorists in other countries.

Russian capo sentenced The National Court has sentenced Zakhar Kniazevich Kalashov, the leader of the RussianGeorgian mafia, to seven years in jail and a fine of €20 million after finding him guilty of money laundering. Five other members of his criminal organization received lower sentences. Another 24 members of the same

gang are in jail awaiting trial. Kalashov was arrested in Dubai in 2006 and was extradited to Spain, where he remained in jail until March this year, when he was released on bail of €300,000. Court sources said Spain has not received extradition requests for the men from Georgia.

Credit rating downgraded once again Fitch cut Spain's credit rating from the maximum AAA to AA+, citing the country's poor growth prospects and sending share indexes on a swift decline of more than 1% on Friday. Standard & Poor's had taken the same step a month ago but Fitch's move is a fresh blow to the government which wants to ease market fears about its economy. Also on Friday, six regional Spanish savings banks announced they were negotiating alliances to avoid insolvency. Many of the 45 savings banks operating in Spain have struggled after investing heavily in the property sector, causing a boom in construction before its collapse. One of them, Cajasur, was taken over by the Bank of Spain earlier this month after talks to merge it with Unicaja failed. Prompted by investor concerns that

Spain could be facing a Greek-style debt crisis, the government came up with a tough €15 billion austerity package to cut its public deficit to 3% of GDP by 2013 from 11.2% last year. The country moved out of recession in the first quarter of this year, with growth of 0.1%, but Fitch said the economic recovery would be "more muted than that forecast by the government". It warned that the “inflexibility of the labour market and the restructuring of regional and local savings banks will hinder the pace of adjustment, particularly in the aftermath of the real estate boom”.

World News Audit of 'crazy' Labour spending An audit of the government's books has been launched after the incoming Coalition found examples of "crazy" spending decisions in Labour's last year in power. The prime minister said that what had been seen so far were just individual examples of very bad procedures and bad behaviour. He said the Labour government had taken spending decisions in the last year or so that no rational government would

have done - including giving something like 75% of senior civil servants bonuses after everything that's happened in the current year. He said: "That's not a fiscal stimulus. It is a crazy thing to do. Mr Cameron also announced an inquiry into civil service salaries, to

be headed by left wing campaigner Will Hutton, vice chairman of think tank The Work Foundation. The prime minister said NHS managers and other senior civil servants should not earn "more than 20 times the lowest paid" in their organisations. He added

that the same principles should apply to the BBC, although it would not be included in the review as it was independent. Mr Cameron said the spending audit would form part of a wider programme to set out government spending plans for the coming three years.

Free towels and a polar bear A party that calls itself "the Best" has won local elections in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik. Founded by comedian Jon Gnarr six months ago, the Best Party’s

campaign video featured candidates singing to the tune of Tina Turner's "Simply The Best". Key pledges included "sustainable transparency",

free towels at all swimming pools and a new polar bear for the city zoo. The party also called for a Disneyland at the airport and a "drugfree parliament" by 2020.

This incredible picture shows a 200ft-deep hole in an intersection in downtown Guatemala City. In the top left of the intersection stood a three-storey building.

Search for victims continues Rescuers are digging in search of dozens of people still missing after landslides caused by Tropical Storm Agatha destroyed entire communities in Central America. Emergency workers are struggling to get help to communities cut off by the storm, which has killed more than 100 people since Saturday, most of them in Guatemala. Honduras and El Salvador have also suffered death and destruction – at least 14 people died in Honduras, and nine in El Salvador. All

three countries have declared emergencies in an attempt to increase immediate aid and resources. The storm dumped more than 3ft of rain on parts of Guatemala, the government said, causing rivers to burst their banks and hillsides to collapse. Guatemala's main airport is still closed to

commercial flights because of the eruption of the Pacaya volcano last week, slowing the arrival of international help. El Salvador's President, Mauricio Funes, said the risk of further destruction was still high. He said: "It has rained so much that the glass is full and one more drop could be fatal."

The Best Party will now hold six seats on the 15member city council. Commentators said the party benefited from voters' loss of trust in government.

International Criminal Court altered behaviour UN chief Ban Ki-moon told a summit in Uganda discussing the Haguebased International Criminal Court (ICC) that it has forced governments to alter their behaviour in the eight years of its existence. He said it had curtailed impunity and had broken new ground on victims' rights, and called on member countries to step up co-operation. Delegates from more than 100 countries are attending the meeting, to take stock of the ICC's achievements and push forward proposals for strengthening its rules. The ICC has five active investigations, all in Africa. So far no-one has been convicted of alleged war crimes. Some critics argue

that the issuing of arrest warrants against serving government leaders, especially President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan for alleged war crimes in Darfur, are a disincentive to achieving peace in the world's trouble spots. After Mr Bashir's indictment last year the African Union said it would halt co-operation with the ICC. But the court's chief prosecutor Luis MorenoOcampo says he believes attitudes in Africa are changing: "In Africa, there are some leaders who are trying to change, and some leaders who are opposing the change. And that's the tension." He called on the Western media to focus their attention on this change.

David Laws, who quit as Chief Secretary to the Treasury after disclosures about his expenses, said in a statement to local media on Tuesday that he never sought to exploit the expenses system and had paid a "high price" for wanting to keep his sexuality private. Mr Laws, who was in the cabinet for less than three weeks, said the past few days had been the "toughest of his life". He said it had been a very emotional experience to find so many people willing to stand by him at this difficult time.He added that his wish to keep his sexuality private was influenced by the fact he had grown up at a time when homosexuality was still regarded as "wrong or

shameful" and said "the further time went on the more difficult it seemed to be to tell the truth". He said he should have been "more open" about his circumstances, and hoped to remain as Yeovil MP, if his constituents backed him. Mr Laws said he resigned because he did not feel he could continue with the "crucial work" of sorting out the nation's finances after it emerged that he claimed expenses to pay rent to his

partner, James Lundie. Under rules introduced in 2006, MPs are not allowed to lease accommodation from a partner. Mr Laws had already apologised for a breach of the rules, referred himself to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner and agreed to repay ÂŁ40,000. Senior politicians from the coalition government have praised Mr Laws and said they hope he can return to office some time in the

future. Mr Laws said he intended to "get back" to his work as MP for Yeovil as soon as possible, a job which he said he "loved". But he added: "Over the weeks ahead, I will want to understand whether I still have the confidence of my constituents, without which it would be difficult to continue my work." Mr Laws has been succeeded as Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Lib Dem colleague Danny Alexander.

Potters Bar crash inquest opens An inquest into the Potters Bar rail crash in which seven people died and 76 were injured when a high-speed train came off the rails just outside the station in 2002 has been opened in

Letchworth, Hertfordshire. Various demands for a full public inquiry were rejected by the government in 2005. Judge Michael Findlay Baker QC, who will conduct the inquest, said: "Eight

years have passed since the Potters Bar rail crash. The delay in holding an inquest has been extreme and will have protracted to an exceptional degree the distress of those who have

been bereaved. In their interest and in the more general public interest, there must be no more delay." The inquest is expected to last about two months.

Libya crash 'not technical fault'

Beaches meet EU standards

TRIPOLI. A plane crash in Libya that killed 103 people on May 12th was not caused by mechanical failure, according to the Libyan commission investigating the crash. A spokesman said the causes remained unknown, but the "black box" recorders indicated that the plane had enough fuel and made no call for help. The sole survivor was a nine-year-old Dutch boy.

BRITAIN. The Environment Agency said on Monday that almost every beach in England and Wales meets Europe's highest cleanliness standards. The quality of water in 97% of bathing sites is good enough to be classified "excellent". It said the recent good weather and action to reduce pollution from farms and sewer overflows are responsible for the improved results.

Sra Martinez explained her change of attitude, saying that she had finally decided to recognise the fact that naturists have traditionally used that beach because its many dunes afford them privacy. In the past,

naturists caught there have been fined and despite the mayor's decision, this could still happen. A council spokesman said no signs will be put up to mark off the area and nudists who strayed outside it

would still be fined. The announcement was made the day before the Naturists Federation of Spain was due to lodge a complaint against the Cadiz Ayuntamiento at the High Court in Seville.

Abortion figures released Equality ministry Ministry of Health statistics show that of the 5,196 women who denounced sought abortions in Malaga province in 2008, 1,451 had already had one while 478 had had two or more. The numbers are based on data provided by the five clinics authorised to carry out abortions. According to health professionals, at least a third of the women are immigrants whose husbands will not allow

them to use contraceptives. In these cases, one gynaecologist said, the women are fitted with IUDs that their husbands cannot detect. Figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that 2,408

women sought abortions in 2000, up from just over 1,000 in 1990. Malaga is ranked fifth for abortions on a nationwide scale, after Madrid (22,126), Barcelona (19,571), Valencia (6,388) and Murcia (5,350).

María José Rodríguez Ramos, a professor in Labour Law at the University of Seville, has revealed that the Equality Ministry, headed by Bibiana Aído, is promoting in its publications and its own website the scholarships offered by the Real Colegio de España de

San Clemente de Bolonia. For the past 641 years, the college has given scholarships to “Catholic boys of good family and irreproachable conduct”. Sra Rodriguez is currently suing the University of Seville for giving a position she had applied for to a former pupil of the College.

Dole fiddle exposed Police in Granada have arrested 83 people and charged them with fraudulently obtaining some €3 million from the Social Security and the State Employment Offices. According to the Labour Ministry, four construction companies which were not active “hired” 175 workers for the minimum amount of time possible in order to claim dole and then fired them. Of these, 142 claimed dole amounting to €850,000, while the companies owed €1,4 million in social security payments. The manager of the companies also sold false invoices for non-existing works amounting to €735,000. He is the only one who is being held; the rest were released with charges. The investigation continues and further arrests are expected.

Alhaurin mayor bans heifer run

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

After it was confirmed that a heifer had to be put down after being brutally beaten by drunken by youths at the end of last weekend's feria, Alhaurin el Grande Mayor Juan Martin Serón has banned the traditional “suelta de vaquillas (heifer run)” from all future ferias. On Monday, the mayor said: “When the authorities cannot control a public act, the best thing is to forbid it and that's what we're going to do – there will be no more suelta de vaquillas.”

He said the council had originally been told that the heifer died as the result of a head-to-head run in with another heifer. But the Andalucian Association against the Abuse of

Animals and the Environment were able to produce a video showing the beating which will be used to denounce the youths involved as well as the Ayuntamiento for not

having prevented the incident. The mayor said the Guardia Civil have already identified some of the youths, who will be duly punished in accordance with the law.

Police denounce Seville mayor The Unified Police Syndicate (SUP) has denounced the Socialist mayor of Seville, Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, for sending his official car to Barcelona (some1,100 km) to pick him up from the airport when he arrived to attend the final of the King's Cup between Atlético de Madrid and

Sevilla Fútbol Club. In its monthly circular, the SUP asks: Are there no taxis in Barcelona? Is it humiliating for a mayor to use a taxi?” It goes on: “We wouldn't mind if it had been his car and he paid for the petrol himself, but its our taxes that pay for it.” The SUP uses its circular to award or take

away points from politicians and highranking members of the security forces. In the circular, it compares Prime Minister José Luis Rodroguez Zapater's U-turn on the economy with his failed talks with the Basque terrorist group ETA: “He

insisted there was no crisis then PUUUM, just like Barajas on December 30, 2006, the day after he'd said the talks were going well.” On that date, an ETA car bomb demolished the T4 car park at Barajas airport.

Missing teen turns up

Trick to stop wife finding out

ARMiLLA, GRANADA. A 15year-old girl who disappeared after taking out the garbage on Thursday night walked into the Guardia Civil barracks in the provincial capital on Saturday morning after calling her family from a phone box. She said she had not been abducted but did not explain where she had been or why her mobile phone was switched off.

GRANADA. The Local Police report that men caught with prostitutes – for which they can be fined up to €1,200 since last November – usually give them a friend's address for the summons to be sent to.

Two months without TV

More temporary work this summer

MALAGA. People living in some eastern parts of the province have not been able to watch TV since the changeover from analogue to digital television two months ago because of reception problems. They have been told the problem is the heat affecting the Mijas relay station – but are puzzled because they can receive all the Moroccan TV channels loud and clear.

COSTA DEL SOL. Despite possible volcanic ash clouds and higher IVA as of July, employment agencies catering for hotels and businesses along the coast say the number of job contracts should rise this year – on average by 10% and up to 40% in the chiringuitos.

They can't pay the fine on the spot and they don't want to run the risk of their wives reading the summons first.

Summer jobs have dropped on average by 30% over the past two years.

n 10 - Political Update

The Local Voice

Muriel Pilkington

It’s you, stupid!

R

ecent opinion polls show that a majority of Spaniards also approve of bringing the election forward, and the latest ones even give the Partido Popular an outright majority – bigger than the one Jose Maria Aznar had in 2000 - if the election were to be held now. Even more worrying for the Socialists is that the PP is tipped to win in five regions, two of which – Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha – have been Socialist strongholds since the country was divided into autonomous regions in the early 1980s. The Socialists currently govern in the other three regions – Asturias, Cantabria and the Balearic Islands – in alliance with local parties. However, Zapatero has never disguised his contempt for opinion polls although he makes an effort to hide his contempt for the electorate. According to inside sources, he’s convinced the economy will start improving at some point next year – he’s been saying that for the past 18 months at least – and he’s trusting that the voters will have forgotten the current hard times by March 2012. What he seems to forget is that the Spaniards have very long memories. The big question now is – will he be able to last that long.

T

he man who saved Zapatero last week – CiU leader and parliamentary spokesman Josep Duran Lleida – was calling him a “political corpse” by the weekend. That should have rung a warning bell for the PM, especially if he reads the usually pro-government newspaper El Pais. Just 15 years ago, the then CiU parliamentary spokesman and Catalan regional premier, Jordi Pujol, forced Felipe Gonzalez to call an early election by voting against his Budget.

N

ow, the CiU has no reason to love the Socialists. It governed in Catalonia for 23 years until the regional election in 2003, when it failed to obtain a majority. Thanks to the quirks of the Spanish electoral system, the Socialist Party formed the so-called tripartite government with two small Catalan nationalist parties under Pascual Maragall

Martin Delfín

Anything to win a race

S

r Zapatero managed to get his cuts through Parliament last week, by one solitary vote, on a morning that can only be described as the most humiliating one in his political career. He had to sit and listen as all the different parties’ spokesmen and women told him from the dais – you’re the problem, Mr Prime Minister. Several urged him to do the decent thing and call an early election – while he just sat there, stonyfaced, hiding his relief that the moderate Catalan nationalist party CiU abstained, thus saving him from a defeat he richly deserves.

Memo from Madrid

and the same alliance won the 2006 regional election under Jose Montilla,

O

nce again, the electoral quirk helped Montilla. CiU got more votes and seats but fell short of a majority. Its candidate, Arturo Mas, had sworn – rather stupidly as it turned out – that he would not form an alliance with the PP, so once again the Socialists and their two allies prevailed. But CiU has learned its lesson. It’s tipped to win in the next regional election in November this year and Mas has already said he’ll join forces with the PP if necessary to form a government because the two parties basically agree on economic matters. Quick explanation: CiU is a fusion of two parties – Convergencia and Union. Mas leads Convergencia and Duran leads Union who had agreed that Mas should be the CiU candidate in November.

S

o it would seem that the die is cast. Zapatero has to submit next year’s budget – which of necessity has to be very austere – to Parliament in October. If CiU votes against it with the PP and a couple of smaller parties, the budget will not be approved and by law Zapatero will have to call an election. A fitting end for the worst government since the return of democracy in 1977.

Still time to book

R

eaders in Coín and surrounding areas still have time to book a seat for the British Consulate' Open Day, which will cover topics such as the European Health Card, how working in Spain may eventually affect your pension, as well as information about the services available to Britons living in Spain. The meeting will be held on Friday, June 11th, at the Convento de Santa Maria de la Encarnacion, Plaza Santa Ana, starting at 10.30 am. You can book your place on the Consulate's website http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk or by calling 917 146 443, which will also receive any open question you want dealt with on the day. You can also make your reservation by emailing the Foreigners Department at coinforeigners2yahoo.es or calling in at the Coin Tourist Office on Friday morning.

Local elections

W

ith all the talk of elections going on, I sincerely hope you've all registered to vote in our very own local elections in May next year. Flex those muscles, make yourself heard. But more on this anon.

T

he call was made by the Catalan nationalist coalition (CiU) and the challenge has been placed on the table – Prime Minister Zapatero must call early elections if he cannot muster enough support to pass later this year a lean budget based on his €15 billion in savings over the next 18 months through harsh and unpopular austerity measures. Josep Duran i Lleida, the CiU leader, issued the warning after explaining last Thursday why his 10-member parliamentary bloc was abstaining from voting for the government’s package of sweeping spending cuts.

T

he entire package, which includes a 5% wage cut for public servants and a freeze on retirees’ pensions, was approved, 169 to 168, with the CiU, the Canaries Coalition (CC) and Navarre People’s Party (UPN) – all thought to be government’s congressional partners – abstaining. The Socialists, with a one vote party majority in Congress, were able to pull it off with a total 13 abstentions. It would have just taken one defection to have sent Spain – and maybe the rest of Europe – into spinal tap mode.

T

he CiU’s roiling appeal to schedule early elections was a sobering wakeup call for Zapatero and his team; they really didn’t expect that such a demand would come from one of their parliamentary friends. The suggestion should have been brought to the floor by the Popular Party leader, Mariano Rajoy, but he has in fact been waiting until Spain relinquishes its European Union presidential seat on June 30th before he begins an incessant demand for early elections. You will hear from him after July 1st but not before so as not to demonstrate to the EU partners that Spain is a divided nation – hypocrisy in its truest form but pinheaded mindlessness on Rajoy’s behalf if he really believes that Europe isn’t aware of what is really going on in this country. The PP leader has known for the longest time that he doesn’t have enough parliamentary support to back him, but Duran’s direct shot at the prime minister offered a bit of optimism. The CiU leader said that he would continue to honour all the commitments with the Socialists, including getting their budget passed, but beyond that, the PSOE was finished.

T

hese presumptuous threats coming from the CiU are of the electoral eccentric. As it faces a tough regional elections in autumn, the CiU fears its Catalan franchise will be threatened by the puttering global economy, not to mention the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) and the leftist radical parties in the upcoming race. So what better campaign ammunition than being given a chance to point a finger at the prime minister’s nose on live national television. And don’t you even begin to believe that the Catalan nationalists will withdraw their full support for the Socialists while the future of their region’s statute is still in the hands of the

Josep Duran i Lleida.

bureaucratic, moribund Constitutional Court . This bitterly divided body, which has for four years been haggling over the region’s controversial autonomous set of by-laws passed in a referendum in 2006 and challenged by the PP, is said to have now reached a compromise and will shave off only a “modest” number of clauses that it interprets as an open door to secession. The Socialists have begun filtering bits to journalists that they are vetting new candidates for the Constitutional Court bench just as some of the judges’ terms expire this year, a nervous notion to put all of Catalonia ’s parties on alert as ballot date approaches. Twenty-three of those judicial candidates are proposed by the autonomous regions.

T

he prime minister has some tough days ahead, as do all European leaders as they try to get this continent back on track and show to the rest of the world that their dreams for a united Europe weren’t as far-fetched as many once and still believe. Twenty years ago the euro was thought by many to be a pipe dream, and today, its state is fragile but backed by a strong commitment that it is here to stay even if people in Spain, Italy and Greece begin to sound off that their lives were better off with the peseta, lira and drachma. They forget the world was a lot different then.

C

alling early elections and changing leadership in the middle of “a war” isn’t good business. Zapatero told his Socialist team on Monday that there won’t be any early elections and he was prepared to ride out the storm. Washington is voicing concern across Europe, with President Obama calling Zapatero to “encourage” him to get those austerity measures in gear. The US Democrats are worried that the continent’s spiralling economies, growing deficits, and the euro-plunge will make recovery even more difficult back home, eroding their domestic power base as they - like the Catalans face difficult mid-term elections in November. Ohhhh, these politicos!

Tolox After reading with interest, in issue 73 dated May 19th 2010, that town halls are struggling to raise sufficient taxes, I would like to make this suggestion:Would it not now make sense that town halls throughout Spain who have issued building licences to people who believed they have gone through the proper processes and paid a lot of money to town halls, to now legalize these properties after which the Town Halls would immediately increase the tax revenues by way of the IBI property tax. If there was any corruption or illegality involved, the vast majority of people who have built their houses did so with the advice of notaries, lawyers, architects and town halls. The Junta should now do the decent thing and legalize these properties, for a pecuniary sum of money say no more than

€250, to allow law abiding people to pay their dues and lay the blame for any irregularities where it really belongs. Please keep up the good work with your paper. Editor replies: Quite so! My house was totally legal when I bought it and now isn't as the land it is on has been designated a “reserva”. I am all for people who have not complied with the laws in the country they choose to live in having to face the consequences as they would be in the UK but, for that country to make a new law or redesignate land as a different thing then backdate that law to make once legal properties illegal is just plain daft. The only thing that has been built on my plot since I purchased the property is a pool and I had full planning permission for it from the town hall that is now telling me it's illegal

because they've changed the rules and I can't even pay the €6000 I was quoted to have it legalised. I've apparently got to wait for them to change the rules again. I would add that this not only affects the foreigners in Spain but the Spanish that live in my area as well - and even they can't understand it all. No wonder my neighbour walks around, head bowed, muttering “It's all gone horribly Spanish!”. I love this country and the people that live here but, come on guys, get the bureaucracy sorted out …... and fairly, please.

Those who have been affected should know that thousands and thousands of incorrect code numbers were issued by the UK HMRC in February. It has been a nightmare,

Shh...It’s a secret! There are thousands of artificial satellites currently in space orbiting the Earth. On average one is launched every week.

After all, this is really the only thing that practically everybody complains about! And ironically some poor folk informed that their homes are illegal have indeed been paying IBI hence their utter dismay.

Kate Edge Fuengirola After reading in your excellent paper about the last few days being the 70th anniversary of the “little ships” of Dunkirk, I was really saddened by the news that for the sake of, in the scheme of things, a few pennies one of the original ships couldn’t go. Surely they should have found the money somehow to allow this heroic little vessel it’s chance to make the

journey once more. What a poor show! I tuned into Sky news to watch the celebrations on Thursday and looked to see if a wealthy businessman or footballer had stepped in and paid the money but couldn’t seem to see it. Does anybody know if the “Queen Boadicea II” from Gloucester eventually made it?

Geoffrey Rogers, FCA By email I note questions appearing in the Spanish press about the issue of incorrect UK paye code numbers earlier this year.

especially as each taxpayer has been trying to telephone the help lines without much success. However, there is good news at last. HMRC have announced that their 'review of identified problems with the 2010/11 annual notices of coding is nearly finished, and the issue of amended P2s and

P6s is nearly back to normal levels . Of course we need to appreciate that HMRC is constantly being cut back and reorganised, and even my own affairs have been moved between four tax districts in the last 12 months !!

The first satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched by the Soviet Union in April 1957 and since then more than 50 nations have launched their own satellites. They have many uses such as GPS, television broadcasts, communication, global surveying and, of course, spying. In April this year the United States Air Force launched a brand new satellite, the X37B. The X-37B is like a miniature unmanned space shuttle, it is launched on top of an Atlas rocket but for its return to Earth it will glide onto a runway as the Space Shuttle does. It is about 50’ long with a wing span of 20’ and is meant to fly in low Earth orbit between 100 and 500 miles high. It is capable of staying in space for up to 270 days. It is more of a space plane than a conventional satellite. But the thing that is making this particular satellite interesting is the secrecy surrounding it. The purpose of its mission is a secret, the

length of time it will stay in orbit and even the location of the control room are all being kept hushed up.

operates at an altitude of 255 miles, which would be typical for a military surveillance satellite.

Of course now that everybody knows it’s secret they want to know why? The internet is buzzing with theories and speculations as to what it is all about. It is not like NASA to keep everything so secret regarding its space missions, it usually publishes all relevant information so why the sudden secrecy? The Pentagon has strongly denied claims that the X37B's mission supports the development of spacebased weapons. A group of amateur sky watchers with members around the globe has concluded that the spacecraft's mission is in support of space-based surveillance and reconnaissance technology; they reported the X-37B's track took it over North Korea, Afghanistan and other trouble spots. According to them, the spacecraft passes over the same given spot on Earth every four days, and

The good news is that you will be able to see it this Friday night ( June 4th) as it flies directly over head. If you look toward the North West at 23:30 you will see a faint ‘star’ climbing higher in the sky until it passes directly over the South coast of Spain heading towards the South East. Unfortunately it won’t be very bright so you may have to give your eyes time to get adapted to the dark so that you can see it better. But if you do see it then don’t tell anyone as it’s meant to be a secret!

Website My website www.kencampbell.info will be off the air for the next few days as I am changing my internet provider, hopefully it should be back up and running by the weekend.

Friends in Focus Dog show success for PAD camera club

by Kym Wickham

The Friends in Focus camera club last week enjoyed another splendid day trip by coach - this time to the Roman remains at Italica (Santiponce), near Seville. A full party, comprising member photographers and guests, visited this interesting place. Worthy of mention were the well preserved amphitheatre and several mosaic floors giving rise to

many good photographic opportunities. A good time was had by all who went. Other trips are planned for the remainder of this year and 2011 so if you want to join them on any future coach day trips or overnight hotel stays, please keep an eye on their Friends in Focus camera club web site at http://www.friendsinfocu scameraclub.com

The PAD Dog Show was held at the Nordic Centre in Fuengirola last Sunday and raised a whopping €2000! A great day was had by all with stalls selling clothing, books, cakes, hot dogs, bacon sarnies and tea plus a tombola and raffle which all went towards raising money for the animals in PAD’s care. The competitions were judged by Betty, who has been a judge at Crufts, Julia and me from The News. A dog and its owner dressed as penguins won the Fancy Dress round for children and dogs, followed by two Scotties dresssed as a bride and groom, with 3rd place going to a dog dressed in full pinnie and entered as “fit as a butchers dog”. The adult and dog fancy dress was won by Annie - a huge Mastin dressed in Flamenco gear, followed by a little devil and the dog’s devil of an owner, and in

third place a belly dancing dog. Best puppy under one year was Rio, a beautiful brown waterdog. Best small dog under 12kg was Freddie the dachshund, followed by Pepsi who had featured in The News’ Pet Of The Week, then Max. Best Medium Dog 12 30kgs was Basset Hound Macey, followed by Ringo and Zak. Best Big Dog over 40kg was Denny, who had a lovely spirit to him and moved beautifully, followed by Labradors Paco and Marlo. Friendliest Dog was Staffie Lily with her very waggy tail followed by handsome Shep and lovely Ronda. Little Sheltie Zulu, aged 13, won Best Veteran over 9 years, closely followed by 13-year-old Chulo and 12year-old Shayla. In the competition entitled The Good, The Handsome and The Ugly, Shep, a black and tan Collie/Alsation won the Good; Pod - a glossy black Spaniel won the Handsome and Solomon - a fantastic 4year-old huge English Bull Mastiff rescued from the RSPCA in the UK, where he was going to be put to sleep as he is deaf, blind in one eye and walks with a pronounced waddle due to too close breeding - won the Ugly part of the competition. Personally, I thought he was absolutely beautiful in his own way and, had there been a category for “Most Magnificent” he would also have won that! Next up was Best Trick won by Lucky catching a biscuit from her nose and weaving in and out of her owner’s legs, then Hugo catching his ball and Pepsi doing a dance and “talking”. Dog most like its owner was Jim’s British bulldog, George, then Mollie in her French outfit, and Charlie. And in the last category of Dog The Judges Would Most Like To Take Home With Them, Betty chose puppy Madison who is looking for a home, Julia chose waterdog Rio and, after a lot of deliberation, I chose Ronda. A jolly good Sunday morning was had by all.

Dear David.... I have a 5 and half year old black Lab bitch with a wonderful temperament. A year ago I acquired a 4 and half year old Spaniel cross castrated dog. I am the 3rd owner of this dog who does have some issues. He is very possessive of me, wants to be with me all the time except when there is something to bark at or on walks. He is however very good at coming when called. He does have some agression inside which manifested with my Lab when first I got him, I did smack him then and he is now fine with her. However, 10 days ago I allowed my heart to rule my head and brought home a tiny puppy bitch, who looks very much like a water dog. She is an absolute delight and I love her already, but the dog either ignores her or goes for her in a nasty way. It is impossible to put the puppy down when he is around as I fear what he would do. The puppy only wants to be friends and my Lab is very patient with her. Please could you advise me as to the best way of getting around this

problem as I want a happy household again. By the way I also have 3 cats, one of which licks the puppy and cuddles up with her. David replied: Best to put the puppy down and walk away. No adult will attack. The puppy is being warned and this is very usual. Always best to keep away and not to talk. Again put the puppy down. Wow! All well with the puppy and "the dog", there are a few growls when she goes near him, but in general he just ignores her. Thank you so much for your advice, everything is so much more relaxed at home and the puppy is much happier, especially with my Lab and male cat. By the way the dogs are called: Becky – Lab, Oscar - Spaniel Cross, and Pooky the puppy.

If you have a problem you can write to me at david@thedogman.net and those that might want a one to one consultation call me on 610 868 748.

San Sebastian

A stroll through the narrow streets of the old town will reveal why. This ancient quarter hosts the biggest concentration of bars in the whole country, each one bursting with a staggering range of tapas. The tradition is the txikiteo - the bar crawl in which you stop for a drink and pintxos- Basque for tapas - and move on. But if tapas bores you after a while then fear not San Sebastian is home to the largest number of Michelin starred restaurants in Spain. There are though plenty of good restaurants where the food is good and the bill won´t break the bank.

This is the undisputed Queen of the Basque resorts -a chic town with an elegant French-style feel...not surprising as it is just 20 km from the French border. It has long been the resort of choice for those escaping the overpowering heat of the Spanish interior. And it offers culture too should you plan a stay during the internationally known jazz and film festivals, or want to visit the fabulous Guggenheim Museum at nearby Bilbao.

ABOUT

MEP for the South East to Calling all moviegoers visit Mijas Conservatives Richard Ashworth was born in 1947 in Folkestone, Kent and he is married to Sally. They have three daughters. Before being elected to the European Parliament in June 2004 to represent the South East of England (he was also a candidate in 1999) Richard stood as the Conservative candidate for North Devon Westminster constituency in the 1997 General Election. As well as having a longterm interest in politics Richard's life has heavily revolved around cows. He was a dairy farmer in East Sussex for over thirty years and during this time operated his own dairy business. Carrying on this theme, Richard served as

Chairman of United Milk Plc. A particular interest of Richard's is education and he was chairman of Plumton College in East Sussex for 15 years. His commitment to bettering Education and in particular vocational learning plays an important role in Richard's parliamentary work. Richard is currently a member of the European Parliament's committee on agriculture and is Conservative Spokesman in this area, while holding a secondary seat on the Budget committee. Richard was elected as the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Delegation to the European

Do you want to enter the wonderful world of Alice in Wonderland - to enjoy the antics of Johnny Depp, perfectly cast as the Mad Hatter, and laugh at the scene-chewing Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen? If you want to enjoy this magical movie, based on Lewis Carroll's classic, inland at the La Trocha cinema then you need to sign up now as a supporter of the La Trocha movie club.

Parliament in November 2008. Tickets are available for the talk being given by Richard in Mijas on June 18th 7.30pm. For more information and to book your seat call Michael Taylor on 951 250 901 or Juliet Butterworth on 952 565 777.

Ricky Leach, the man behind bringing English language films back to Coin, is being asked to prove again to the film distributors that there is a healthy cinema-going audience in the area. Availability is governed by the film distributors who have to pay a lot more for the English language versions of movies rather than the English soundtrack discs which accompany Spanish

versions of the film. This makes audience numbers critical as the distributors decide where best to show the limited number of English language versions in their hands. The last two movies at La Trocha, Brothers and A Single Man, were both English language versions and did not draw big enough audiences to make the showings economically viable. And with blockbusters and critically acclaimed films like Alice in Wonderland, The Ghost

and How to Slay Your Dragon all in English language format Ricky now needs to demonstrate that there is enough interest to keep on bringing the films to Coin. If Ricky can this week show that there are enough people prepared to sign up then he can persuade the cinema to show Alice three times next week. To show your support and confirm that you can back his latest campaign to keep movies at Coin contact Ricky on mail@coinlife.info

I guess that’s why they call it The Blues The Mijas Foreigners Department presents its fourth Blues Festival, 'El Flamenco es el Blues del Gitano y el Blues es el Flamenco del Negro', as part of the Mijas International Day. Following last year’s huge success as part of the International Festival, the Blues section is now extended over four days. Alongside this will be many arts and crafts, workshops, and stalls, from all around the world, representing the many nationalities living in the area. These will be providing local food andf drink from their own cultures, and will be open all day, late into the night. The whole event is put on by the Ayuntamiento de Mijas and their Foreigners Department and presents the opportunity to take promoting the Blues to another level, and attract major artists from around

The Calahonda Lions Golf Day will be taking place at the Santa Maria Golf and Country Club on Sunday June 27th.

the world. This has already been proved by flying in Blues artists and bands solely to play at the festival. It is hoped that the Mijas Blues Festival will become one of the major festivals in Europe in the coming years, with the help of the Mijas Council, and any other sponsors who come forward to be part of it. It is festival with a vey bright future. The traditional first night is held poolside at the TRH Hotel Mijas in the centre of the village. It is a jam featuring some of the participating festival artists and this year takes

place on Thursday June 10th, from 9 pm to 1am. This is a free event and is extremely popular, so come early and enjoy the food from the BBQ cooked by a local chef. Friday and Saturday nights see the artistes in the open-air auditorium, at the top of the village starting at 8pm and ending at 1 am. Tickets will be on sale in advance for €10, and on the door on the night for €12. Then on Sunday afternoon, on the main stage in the Plaza Virgin de la Pena, in the heart of the village, there is another free event, from 3 pm to 8 pm.

2010 FIFA footie with a curry If you’d like your world cup with a little airconditioning and comfort then El Potro Bar and Restaurant is high on the list of options; with a second big screen recently fitted, there are now two choices for unprecedented world cup viewing, either downstairs in the airconditioned sports bar, with the lads, the beer, a big screen, and footie pundit barman James or upstairs, next to the restaurant, in the family bar with its new big screen installed especially for the football. Both bars will show high quality coverage of all the important matches, with a special focus on the Group C England games. The first match covered is the opening game on Friday the 11th, when hosts South Africa play Mexico and then on Saturday 12th there is the first of the England matches when England play (beat) the USA.

Golf Day

If you fancy a curry with your footie then pencil in Friday 18th when England take on outsiders Algeria, as a bonus this match fits in nicely with the popular El Potro Friday Curry Night, a serve yourself open buffet of six curries and tasty starters plus all the traditional extras. At only €10 per person this is very good value, add a few cold beers, some enthusiastic like minded company, to a game of world cup football and what more could the modern man want. The

curries will be served earlier from 3.00 pm on that day so you won’t miss out on either. For the not so football enamoured, the dining room and terraces will be cool and breezy and as usual, with Rob Davy performing this Saturday 5th June with his Beatles Rock and Roll night. El Potro found on Sierrazuela Fuengirola. 284.

Summer panto Cinderella will be held at the Balcon Hotel, Cómpeta on Saturday June 19th and Sunday June 20th. Tickets for the show are €12 euros, which includes a welcome drink and tapas. The panto, very much a blue adult version of the traditional tale, will raise money for two charities: Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice (75%), and the Sasha Roberts Scholarship Fund (25%). Panto Director Tom said: "This is definitely a panto that breaks all the rules but that's part of the fun. It's first and foremost a community event where we hope everyone who comes along will have a really good time. It's comedy but with a serious intent to raise as much money as possible for two extremely worthwhile causes." For more information, contact Debi Bond at casabond@gmail.com

Sex and the city 2 BY MICHAEL PATRICK KING Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon Well, here it is...the followup to the 2008 movie which ended with Carrie finally getting married to Big. The scene is set 2 years later and the gals, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, are taking a close look at their lives. Samantha (Cattrall) is heading a PR campaign in Abu Dhabi and its a cue for the fab four to leave the

City and to head off on a glamorous, sun drenched adventure - a time for fun, fashion and frolics and an opportunity for Carrie to review whether her relationship with Big is going stale. And then she bumps into an old flame in the souk...like you do. The movie has been pretty poorly received by the critics, and at 2 and a half hours the plot is stretched

groaningly thin. For SATC fans it will be a must-see, but don’t expect it to win an army of new followers. And although Cattrall has already said she would be up for a third movie outing a lot is going to depend on whether the fan base rolls out in a massive show of support at the box office.

LATEST DVD RELEASES

Alice in Wonderland BY TIM BURTON Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter Yep, it has only just been on at the cinema. And the rapid release date for the DVD caused some anxiety for the cinema chains. But if you didn t catch it at the movies then sit back and enjoy this visual treat in the comfort of your own home. The Lewis Carroll

classic is brought to life with some memorable performances by, in particular, Depp as the Mad Hatter, and Helena Bonham-Carter in scene chewing, off-with-hishead mode as the Red Queen. A corking bit of family fun.

Up In The Air BY JASON REITMAN Starring George Clooney Charismatic performances by the lead actors, including an Oscar-nominated turn by Clooney. Gorgeous George plays Ryan Bingham, a frequent flyer racking up the miles in his job as a business executive who tells

people that, sadly, they are no longer required by their companies, but not to worry, because the future now holds new challenges. A witty, smart and often poignant movie well worth its many award nominations.

O

ften musical numbers from movie soundtracks have better longevity than the film itself, with the songs becoming embedded in popular culture even when the film has long since dropped off everyone’s radar. While listening to the radio with my mate Salv Bruno this week, I heard Irene Cara’s chart topper ‘Flashdance… what a feeling’ and I realised that I probably haven’t seen the film of the same name for over 25 years. Although Flashdance was panned by the critics at the time, it was the third highest grossing film of the year and went on to win a Grammy, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and various other awards in 1983 and 1984.

F

lashdance was based on the true story of a woman called Maureen Marder, who worked on construction sites as a welder during the day and danced at a strip club by night, whilst all the time aspiring to study dance full time at a Toronto Dance Academy. In the film Alex Owens, lead character and welder, is played by the then unknown actress Jennifer Beals. Alex dreams of making it into the hallowed dance halls of the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance but she discovers that being a dancer in her local bar may not be the kind of training that is going to secure her a place at the prestigious school. Inspired by breakdancing street performers and her elderly ballet teacher, Alex tries for an audition anyway and launches into her famously energetic and often parodied dance routine, leaving the rather conservative Conservatory audition panel somewhat agog. You never actually find out if she makes it through the audition process but you do get to see her running triumphantly out of the building into the arms of her Porsche-driving construction site boss/ boyfriend, Nick. As a vehicle for the promotion of leg warmers and loosenecked sweatshirts the film was a massive success even though it later emerged that none of Alex’s dancing as it appears in the

film was actually done by Jennifer Beals but rather by a number of other dancers and even a gymnast. Flashdance romped up the profitability ladder to the $150 million mark, pushed all the way by the massively successful sound track which also included ‘Maniac’ by Michael Sembello and ‘Gloria’ by Laura Branigan. Meanwhile the real welder/dancer Maureen had to make do with the paltry sum of $2,300 dollars, the amount that she had received in 1982 in exchange for signing away all the rights to her story. What a feeling indeed!

B

illy Elliot was released in the year 2000 but is actually based around the time of the miners’ strike of 1984, not so far from the time line of Jennifer Beal’s Flashdance, so you’d expect to see the omnipresent legwarmers, baggy sweatshirts and breakdancers of the early eighties, except this is County Durham, not Pittsburgh. What you do get, apart from the similar storyline of young untrained dancer with aspirations, is an incredibly successful soundtrack, although this time compiled from a mixture of punk, mod and glam-rock tunes. For me the most memorable tracks throughout the film Billy Elliot are the TRex ones. This may seem a bit odd because T-Rex had had their day in the early to mid seventies and glam rock is not normally the kind of music you would associate with the might of Thatcher’s iron grip on striking unions but in terms of Billy’s fight for the right to dance and his family’s fight for the right to mine, the music fits perfectly. Due to the success of Billy Elliot, the music of TRex and The Jam was brought to a whole new generation and this time there was no real life Billy Elliot being done of out his dues for having sold his story down the river. Director Stephen Daldry said in an interview with The Observer: "People always used to ask me about Billy Elliot - is it a true story? No. We made it up." Good for Billy Elliot I say! But you can’t help feeling sorry for poor old Maureen.

It is going to take all your courage and willpower to stand back from a situation and not go rushing in, especially with your urge for action to go ahead and fight it out. This time by applying a bit of patience, you will be able to negotiate a compromise that will please not only you but the other party. On the other hand there is something you have been avoiding that needs your attention and action; you have all that you need to make that decision. Some things are flowing nicely in your world but then there is a certain someone that is still ‘winding you up’ but for some reason you have a hard time letting them go. Perhaps it is the moment to set yourself free, to open up and see the possibilities that could happen once you take the chains off. This places you in an unfamiliar terrain, it may make you feel insecure at first but if you trust what you feel and not what you think to be the right course of action, it will work out. Things are as they are. You have wanted something to move on and heal, for a change to occur. Not all things of late have happened in the way in which you have thought they would and it may have driven you ‘nuts’ by having to be so constantly adaptable. Change is on its way but also keep your eyes open for chances and seize them as they arise. This is not about having a plan, this is about living in the moment and working with what is there. No matter what looks difficult or how hard life gets, there is always an answer or an easy way to make progress. There is also room for love for there is very little that it cannot cure. Help is being offered to you, not perhaps from the place you would expect it, but together you can turn a situation around beautifully. Someone is about to make a gesture, perhaps it is made too late, it is up to you to decide if they mean it or if they are worth it. Mars has been hanging around in your sign for a while, stirring up restlessness within. A struggle or a battle is about to reach boiling point and then simmer down, things will get intense and then they will get easy. Not everything is as it seems and you need to remain confident - you will see an end to a stressful saga. The truth of something speaks volumes to you now, remain clear and know that your heart is the most powerful tool you have. There is a big unknown going on in your life and no matter how hard you try to plan something, there is still information missing from the jigsaw. The only thing you can do is see how it all unravels, stand back from the situation and then perhaps a way will show itself. Certainty is something that you are lacking on but clarity and confidence you are brimming over the top with. Take time out to relax, unwind and chill – it has been a long time since you wound down.

You have come to a place where you can finally see what you have been fighting, victory is very near and you have earned yourself ‘respect’ and recognition for your determination and consistency. Be rest assured that someone knows you are worth a lot, your voice is being heard. By the end of the week you reach a conclusion to a drama that brings swift change into your rd September 23 - life. A bit of appreciation for all that you have got and all that you have going on in your life would do no harm. Perhaps a loved one could do with a bit of attention and reminding of how much they mean to you. An old wound can finally be set free this week as you will have inner strength and power to face your problems head on. You could see some distinct differences between someone’s actions and their words - this is how you will work out if they are sincere.

SAGITTARIUS To get the outcome you want this week requires you to be calm, smile sweetly and behave in a relaxed manner, even if you are feeling the reverse inside. The thing is there is a lot going on in your life that is positive and true but you are perhaps worried that something is not as good as it appears on first impressions – you need a promise you can rely on not a dream to daydream nd November 22 - about when there is nothing else to do. st December 21

Something that just hasn’t made sense before starts to click into place. Your energy levels may have been a bit low lately and ‘time out’ is what you need to recharge those batteries. If you have pushing against the things that you know are not sorted out and settled in your life then this is good news, the wall is about to crumble down. This gives an opportunity for it to be re-built with stronger foundations so that it may stand the test of time. Anything is possible at the moment - just leave your doubts behind. Before you make the next move, consider what it is you really need, your options and alternatives. Someone’s emotions may be exaggerated this week and it will be easy for you to get swept up in their fears, therefore, make sure your feet remain firmly on the ground. Some problems are just not worth thinking about; this is because there is no solution at the moment. The more attention you give them the more confusing it seems and the more negative you can feel. Life can seem all over the place right now, as long as you remain focused on what you are doing, you will breeze these days.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

This is a quite brilliant recipe. We went to Sue and Mick's for dinner last week and had this jelly with Doritos and other bits and pieces and I was ready to fight anybody who took the bowl away from me! You could use it as a topping for both meat and fish and I've been told that somebody even has it on their toast for breakfast. You can make it as mild or as hot as you like but, don't use too much chilli or you'll mask the great taste. The recipe is from Sue’s sister, Caroline MacFarlane. Yumm.....!

Red Pepper Jelly

(serves 4)

Ingredients: ● ½ pint vinegar ● ¼ pint lemon juice ● 2 red peppers, de-seeded ● 3lb 4oz sugar ● Salt and chilli powder to taste ● 1 bottle “Certo” (you can get it in Iceland)

Method ● Liquidise the vinegar and lemon juice with the peppers.

● Add salt and chilli powder to taste.

● Place in a saucepan with the sugar and bring to the boil for 5 minutes.

● Leave to cool slightly then add the “Certo”.

● Pour into sterilised jars. ● It may not appear to set at first but will do when it has fully cooled.

Here comes summer and often with it comes an influx of visitors. If you or yours are unfortunate enough to need to visit your local Centro de Salud (Health Centre), here are a few expressions which may come in useful. The médico (doctor) or enfermera (nurse) may ask you "¿Qué sintomas tiene?" - What symptoms do you have? Tengo is I have. Tengo alergia - I have an allergy Tengo tos - I have a cough Tengo fiebre - I have a temperature If you're speaking on behalf of one of your visitors (and, of course, impressing them massively with the fluency of your Spanish), you will need to use the word Tiene - He or she has - Tiene alergia - He or she has an allergy and so on. Me duele is it hurts. Me duele la cabeza - My head hurts Me duele la espalda - My back hurts If someone else is in pain its Le duele Le duele la cabeza - His or her head hurts Le duele la espalda - His or her back hurts Pica means it's itchy. Una quemadura is a burn. Puntos are stitches. Roto is broken. When you need to go to the chemist's, look for the farmacia. If the green cross outside is lit, it's open. If it's outside normal opening hours, you need to find out which is the farmacia de guardia - the duty chemist's. They should be able to tell you at the health centre or else it will be on a sign outside every other chemist's. And remember, even if you don't speak it fluently, you'll probably get a much more friendly and helpful response if you start off by trying to say a few words in Spanish. Suerte - Good luck. Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. Health&Beauty RESEARCH

= SMOKING IS VERY BAD. The 4,000 chemicals in tobacco cause lung cancer, one of the hardest to beat, as well as emphysema or bronchitis, which can't be reversed. However, the upside is that one year after giving up smoking, there is a 50% reduction in the risk of having a heart attack. = SMOKING POT IS JUST AS BAD. It was once thought that marijuana was safe, but it contains many of the same cancer-producing chemicals as cigarette smoke and has the same health-harming effects.

A Scottish study of more than 11,000 adults found those with poor oral hygiene had a 70% increased risk of heart disease compared with those who brushed twice a day. brushing has any bearing on the risk of developing heart disease. Data was collected on the participants' lifestyle behaviours, and they were also asked how often they visited the dentist and how often they brushed their teeth. Overall, six out of 10 people said they visited the dentist every six months and seven out 10 reported brushing their teeth twice a

RESEARCH

day. Over the eight-year study there were 555 "cardiovascular events" such as heart attacks, 170 of which were fatal. Taking into account factors that affect heart disease risk, such as social class, obesity, smoking and family history, the researchers found those who brushed twice a day were at a lower risk. However, a spokesman for the British

Heart Foundation said that oral hygiene was just one factor in good heart health. He said: "If you don't brush your teeth, your mouth can become infected. Good personal hygiene is a basic element of a healthy lifestyle, but if you want to help your heart, you should eat a balanced diet, avoid smoking and take part in regular physical activity."

Exercises can Varifocal fall relieve apnea risk can be cut New research into sleep apnea has revealed important but simple ways of dealing with the problem. A US study has shown that exercises that strengthen the throat can reduce the severity of sleep apnea by building up muscles around the airway, making them less likely to collapse at night. Researchers split a group of volunteers with obstructive sleep apnea into two groups. One group was trained to do breathing exercises daily, while the other did 30 minutes of throat exercises, including swallowing and chewing motions, placing the tip of the tongue against the front of the palate and sliding it back, and pronouncing certain vowels quickly and continuously. Three months later, the volunteers who did the throat exercises snored less, slept better and reduced the severity of

their condition by nearly 40%. They also showed reductions in neck circumference, a known risk factor for apnea. The control group showed almost no improvement. Other randomized studies have found similar effects – one even showed that playing instruments which strengthen the airways, like the didgeridoo, can ease sleep apnea.

An Australian study has shown that 40% of falls could be prevented if older people wore single-lens glasses instead of varifocals while outside. Falls are a leading cause of death and disability in the elderly. Varifocal lenses are widely prescribed because they correct problems seeing both near and far in one pair of glasses, but they may create problems impairing balance. The Australian researchers recruited more than 600 people aged either over 80 or over 65 with a history of falls. All of them used varifocals and not single lens glasses, and wore them outside at least three times a week. Half were given single lens glasses for going out, the other half were not. In all, the first group had 8% fewer falls than the second. For those who regularly went outside, the difference was significant - with 40% fewer incidents. Based on these findings, the

How bad are your bad habits?

Bad oral hygiene-heart link found The study backs previous work showing a link between gum disease and heart problems. It is known that inflammation in the body, including in the mouth and gums, has an important role in the build up of clogged arteries, which can lead to a heart attack. But this is the first time that researchers have looked at whether the frequency of teeth

researchers recommend that older people who are active outside to use single-lens glasses, despite the inconvenience. However for those who spend most of their time indoors varifocals remain the best option. This risk of falling over while wearing varifocals, also called multifocals or progressives, has been studied before, especially when going up and down stairs or walking outside. But the risk has to be offset against their benefits when it comes to carrying out tasks that require changes in focal lengths, like driving, shopping and cooking. The researchers said the logical answer would be to have two pairs of glasses, even though some people may find that frustrating.

= SUNBURN IS ANOTHER BIG BADDIE. Not only does it increase the risk of skin cancer, it also ages the skin faster. So take it easy in the sun, use a high protection cream or even better – just stay out of the sun. = LOUD NOISE is a less obvious baddie but one-third of hearing loss is caused by exposure to it. Loud sounds destroy the ear's sensory nerve cells, sometimes so gradually that you don't even notice it. Although you can't repair this damage, you can preserve what you have left. The golden rule: "If you're in a noisy room where you have to raise your voice to be heard by someone three feet away, then it's too loud." = COFFEE IS NOT AS BAD as some “experts” make out – if you stick to under six cups per day. If you drink more than that, you should compensate with a calcium supplement because it could contribute to bone loss – the same applies to tea drinkers. The upside is longterm coffee consumption may reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, and an alkaloid in coffee may prevent cavities. = FAST FOOD IS NOT SUCH A BADDIE because the damage it does can be undone. Continued consumption of these unhealthy meals can trigger heart problems, obesity, and diabetes but the upside is that following either a low-fat vegetarian regimen or a Mediterranean diet that's rich in healthy fats, whole grains, and vegetables has been shown to reverse heart disease risk in the long run. As a general rule: As long as it took for you to get to an unhealthy state, that's about how long it takes to become disease free.

UK driving test is 75yrs old Almost 250,000 people applied to get their licence from just 250 examiners who each assessed up to 16 drivers per day. The pass rate then was 63 per cent. Now in 2010 our road networks are used by 28.3 million vehicles every day as opposed to1.4 million in 1935, while pass rates have dropped to 44 per cent.

Red Bull’s red mist as Hamilton takes the Franchitti wins Indy Turkish GP for his 1st win of the season 500 for second time Blame for crash has been laid squarely and unfairly on the shoulders of Mark Webber

England’s Mike Conway in horror smash

Mark Webber must be wondering what he has done so wrong, that he is being blamed for a coming together with team mate Vettel. With 3 poles on the bounce and two wins what more can Webber do for his team. Team principal Christian Horner said that Webber’s engine was turned down to fuel save mode and he should have yielded his position for the good of the team, Vettel clearly turned in too early touching Webber’s car and almost took Webber out as well.

Dario Franchitti claimed his second Indianapolis 500 victory with a commanding drive for Ganassi in the 2010 edition of the IndyCar Series' premier race. Franchitti had been the fastest man throughout the race, leading for the vast majority of laps, at times by as much as 10 seconds. "I honestly don't know what to say," he said. "This is just unbelievable. Winning one Indy 500 was a dream, but to win a second is beyond belief. This is just fantastic. Dan Wheldon finished in second place, as a late fuel stop meant Tony Kanaan had to relinquish the runner-up spot with just four laps to go after an epic drive from the back of the grid. Marco Andretti claimed his first podium place after a judgement by race officials.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s other boss, was a little more condemning of Webber. “Sebastian was ahead by at least 2 metres, there was a corner coming so he had to move into his line,” Marko said. “He couldn’t have

The harmonious McLaren duo after their 1-2

braked on the dirt.” Asked if there was a reason Vettel suddenly had more pace than him, having followed him so closely for 40 laps, Webber said: “Hmm. Maybe.” Asked if there was a reason he had come out of the previous corner a bit slower than in previous laps, Webber said: “Hmm. You guys need to dig more, somewhere else.” Lewis Hamilton, who profited from

the collision, pointed out that Vettel had done a similar thing to him earlier in the race. “He was so aggressive as he tried to turn into me, but fortunately I had enough space,” Hamilton said. “It was the exact same thing as he did to Mark.” Red Bull’s loss was certainly McLarens gain as Hamilton drove another superb race to take the

victory from team mate Jenson Button, the pair also having their own wheel to wheel moment but unlike Webber and Vettel, with a lot more respect for each other and their cars. Webber raced on after having a new nose cone to finish in 3rd place, the Mercedes pairing of Schumacher and Rosberg were a distant 4th and 5th, Robert Kubica 6th and the Ferrari’s of Massa and Alonso 7th and 8th respectively.

Scot Dario Franchitti

The race ended under yellow as Mike Conway made contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay and had a massive accident. The Dreyer & Reinbold car rode over the back of HunterReay's Andretti Autosport entry and flew into the fencing, where its back end was ripped off before it crashed back down onto the track. Conway was flown to hospital where it emerged he had a broken leg.

New VW California Camper JLR boss: 'UK plant must go' In Spain the ‘staycation’ might prove to be even more popular than Tata Motors CEO is currently reviewing all of Jaguar Land Rover’s back in Blighty - at least your’e not going to be stuck indoors all day. business, manufacturing and product lines. For generations, people have been getting away from it all in a Volkswagen Campervan. And sixty years on, they're still doing it. But now the great outdoors can be enjoyed in a little more comfort and luxury, thanks to the new technology in Volkswagen's latest Campervan - the California. The California comes with an electrically powered popup roof with comfortable double bed complete with fully-slatted mattress. There's optional 3-zone Climatronic® air conditioning. Plus, with more efficient engines and improved safety features, you'll find the California easy-going on the road, as well as off it. It has to be said though that a light right foot would be worth having as high revving along the motorways ups your fuel consumption significantly. The California sleeps 4 comfortably; 2 in the popup roof, 2 on the second bed in the main cabin. There’s a fully-functional, fitted kitchen unit with twoburner hob, sink and fridge. Swivelling front seats mean more sociable mealtimes, with everyone around the

foldaway table. Even on a cold night once you switch on the electrically-operated secondary heater, it's toasty. It is expensive at £39,965/ now, or add 4 wheel drive and 178bhp engine for another £4,500. But the idea of being able

to travel at the drop of a hat inland or coastal is a seemingly growing one. Despite the high level of camping necessities there's no toilet. Perhaps that's the main difference between a motorhome and a camper van...

It had been thought that JLR had decided to reverse its decision to close either Solihull or Castle Bromwich, persuaded by a pre-tax profit of £32m for the year to March after huge losses in 2009. But Tata Motors CEO Carl-Peter

Forster stated that JLR still plans to close either of the factories by the middle of this decade. "The previous management made that decision [to close one of the plants]; we see no reason to

News from Mijas England’s fine win over Bangladesh La Cala Lions England wrapped up an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh on Martin Rhead remembered by his friends on a very special day and much needed money raised for two deserving charities. the final day of the first Test at Lord's in front of 9,000 fans The Mijas La Cala Lions recently organized a charity golf day, at Miraflores Golf, greatly assisted by Alf Pilkington and ‘Scooby’ Sinden of Animal Welfare. Over 2,660 euros were raised on the day and split fifty-fifty between Animal Welfare and The Mijas La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group. The main prize of the day was the Martin Rhead Memorial Trophy put up by The Lions in memory of their first President. Martin worked tirelessly for many years to raise money for local charities and those in need becoming a living legend in La Cala village until he passed away. Over 80 golfers took part on the day playing a two-ball

Bernie O’Toole was nearest the pin on hole 11 and Peter Hau on the 15th. Around 100 were present for the lunch and presentation afterwards. Alf Pilkington was

delighted with the turn-out and thanked everybody concerned with making the day so successful. He gave a special vote of thanks to the Board of Miraflores Golf Club for special prices on the day, the restaurant staff for providing an excellent lunch and to the event’s sponsors. Entertainment was provided by the fine singing voice of Alan de Ward.

It was an innings return of 5-87, his maiden Test five-for, and the Middlesex bowler ended with impressive match figures of 9-187 on his county ground. Captain Andrew Strauss hit 82 as England reached a winning score of 163-2 in the last over before tea. lunch. England, who had been in the field since the middle of Friday, needed just 160 to win in two sessions. To make the task even easier for openers Strauss and Alastair Cook, the blanket of cloud that had assisted England's bowlers in the morning quickly gave way to a period of unbroken sunshine. And as Bangladesh bowled poorly

with the new ball, Strauss was quickly into his stride, racing to 23 from the first three overs with some surefooted cuts and pulls. All the same, Strauss was dropped at slip by Junaid Siddique off Mahmudullah - though the bowler had his reward when trapping Cook lbw for 23. Though the clouds returned, Bangladesh stuck doggedly to spin. And after a brief period of consolidation it was easy for Strauss and Jonathan Trott. That was until Strauss nicked an attempted cut off Shakib Al Hasan with just 13 more needed. Trott finished off the job with a boundary through square leg and Kevin Pietersen ended unbeaten on 10.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again Last week Antequera was the venue, the event was the charity day I referred to last in my last column, which was for Life, a charity which supports disadvantaged children in the Malaga area. The format was a Texas Scramble and as this is fairly unusual we really did not have much idea what a good score might be but we had some fun along the way with a couple of birdies to finish on four over par gross. Imagine our feelings then, when we discovered that what we thought was a reasonable score was, in fact, bottom of the pile and the winners had amassed eleven birdies in a fine total of five under par gross. Many congratulations to the boys from J K s led by Duncan. Most importantly of course 32 players had an enjoyable day out and the coffers of a very worthwhile charity were swollen by more than 300 euros so thanks are due to the organiser Paul, who I know had a torrid time the day before the event stuck in Bristol airport at the mercy of Easyjet. For all C.O.G.S. members who have not yet put their names down for the summer ball please call Andy, Dave or Nig as time will soon run out. Untill next time. Dave.

Walcott in World Cup Shock

Theo Walcott was the big story last night as he was left out of Fabio Capello’s final 23 for the World Cup. The Arsenal winger said he was disappointed but wished the team all the best. The six who joined him were Darren Bent, Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone, Leighton Baines, Adam Johnson and Michael Dawson. Joe Cole, Heskey, Barry, Crouch and Wright Phillips made the cut.

Cool hand Luke triumphs in Madrid Donald’s win came at the Real Sociedad Hipica Espanola Club de Campo, Madrid Luke Donald has won the Madrid Masters to end a four-year title drought and erase the disappointment of blowing the PGA Championship with a double bogey on the penultimate hole. Donald won with a closing round of 67 for a 21under-par total of 267 to beat Welshman Rhys Davies by one shot. They were level with three to play before Donald struck the decisive blow with an eagle - his third of the week - on the 16th hole. The win lifts the Briton from 13th to ninth in the world - and to fourth in the points race for the Ryder Cup, knocking Padraig Harrington out of the top nine who earn an automatic spot. The last time Donald tasted victory was in the Honda Classic in America in March, 2006, with his last success in Europe coming in Switzerland in September,

England have called up Nottinghamshire seamer Ryan Sidebottom for Friday’s second Test with Bangladesh following an injury to all-rounder Tim Bresnan.

Davies, 25, already a winner this season, said: "It didn't quite come off, but I've got lots to be pleased about.

ROWING

Greg Searle leads British gold charge in Bled Greg Searle won his first international medal for 10 years as the men’s eight won one of six golds for Great Britain in the World Cup opener in Slovenia. It was an ideal first step for Searle, Olympic champion in 1992, who is aiming to win gold in 2012 when he will be 40.

"I was chasing the win and I just came up short unfortunately. On the 16th hole I thought I might keep the momentum (he had just birdied the 15th hole to level), but he threw in an eagle to be fair to him." Italian Francesco Molinari, who had also produced an eagle at the 16th hole before Donald and Davies arrived at the hole, came in third on 18 under, with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell a further shot back in fourth.
