Government claims low strike turnout Thousands of Spain’s public sector workers went on strike yesterday (Tuesday) in protest at Government austerity cuts which will hit pay packets by an average of 5 per cent. Protesters gathered in major cities and towns and Madrid was braced for a major rally and march. The unions claimed that 75-80 per cent of public sector workers had joined the day long strike but the labour ministry put the figure at just 16 per cent. Trade Unions are angry that public sector workers are being penalised and accuse the Government of reneging on previous promises and taking desperate measures now after insisting for months that Spain was relatively unaffected by the economic crisis. The Government is to unveil plans to free up the labour market, making it easier to hire and fire in an

attempt to stimulate growth - the unions have threatened a general strike if the measures go ahead. More than 2.5 million Spaniards work in the public sector, and the trade unions had hoped hundreds of thousands would join the strike from hospitals and schools, fire stations and local government. The unions chose the public sector because they stand to take a salary cut of 5% on average as of July. The cut will be smaller for the lowest paid and as high as 8% for those higher up the pay scale. But with a budget deficit currently running over 11%, the government is under pressure from the EU to slash spending. Spain is

suffering one of the toughest recessions in the EU and has the highest unemployment rate. Apart

from internal labour reforms the EU is calling for an overhaul of the state pensions system.

From Wednesday to Monday morning I was in Madrid. Every year I try to get away somewhere for my birthday and I had wanted to go on the aVE for quite a while to check out what it was like. I'm one of those people that is terribly travel sick so always have to drive wherever we go. however, I can usually do the 2½ hour plane journey to the UK so thought I'd give the 2 hour 50 minute train a go. Not knowing an area is a bit of a nightmare when trying to book an hotel and Google Maps means practically nothing in showing what an area is like , so I went for an apart hotel in a place called Vallecas which was near a metro station. the metro is really efficient in Madrid with a train every 6 minutes on the line 1 route. I'm a London girl and I can tell you I usually had to wait a lot longer than 6 minutes if I'd missed a Piccadilly or Central Line (London's equivalent to Madrid's line 1) train. It's also cheap as you can buy a 10x ticket for only €9. the weather was stiflingly hot until about 9pm when it cooled down just a little and became bearable. I'll be writing a piece about Madrid without the museums soon for the ‘Out and about’ pages. the story about the alhaurin boys attacking the heifer at their feria reached the news in Madrid and was on National tV. Just goes to show that it’s good to highlight these things.

Altamira Cave to re-open

Catalans step closer to independence

Cantabria regional president Miguel Angel Revilla confirmed on Monday that the Altamira Cave will re-open at the beginning of next year for what he called “controlled visits”.

The Generalitat – Catalonia's regional parliament – agreed on Monday to debate a proposal to hold a regionwide referendum on the question of independence from Spain. The Generalitat has turned down several similar proposals in the past. The three nationalist parties that proposed the initiative now have to collect 300,000 signatures before the debate can go ahead. In recent months, informal referendums on

The cave was closed eight years ago so that scientists could gauge the damage done to its world famous prehistoric paintings and engravings by the millions who have visited over the years. The 270-metre long cave, situated 30 kilometres west of Santander, was

of the paintings and the objects, Sautuola published descriptions of his finds in 1880, but both Spanish and foreign experts dismissed the paintings as forgeries. They were not accepted as genuine until the first decade of the 20th century.

Pope to receive ZP Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will meet Pope Benedict at the Vatican at 11 am on Thursday, June 10th, followed by a meeting with

President Silvio Berlusconi at 1 pm. A government press release said the subjects to be discussed at both meetings will be predominantly economic.

Sr Zapatero will also report on his presidency of the European Union which ends on June 30th.

Zara heads to India

The latest opinion poll by Metroscopia for the El Pais newspaper shows that while more people - 86% - have little or no confidence in Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and a similar number believe he is improvising, a majority of 77% still don’t want an early general election. They believe an election campaign now would delay the measures urgently needed to set the economy back on course. Sr Zapatero’s political opponents believe such measures cannot be taken

until the PM leaves the scene. The poll also shows that the Partido Popular’s advantage over the Socialist Party continues to increase, now standing at 10.5%. Traditional PP voters continue to support

Mariano Rajoy – 53% while only 35% of Socialist voters questioned said they would back Sr Zapatero. But nearly 80% of both voting blocs believe new faces are needed. PP voters would

like to see Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon leading the party into the next election, while the favourite to replace Sr Zapatero is Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba.

Trafico targets bikers This week the Guardia Civil have been instructed by the Traffic Authority to keep a close eye on motorcyclists using the country’s main roads in an attempt to reduce the number killed each year in accidents. Of the 1,897 people killed on the roads last year, 20% - or nearly 400 – were motorcyclists. Two thirds of the accidents in urban areas involve a motorbike and are caused mainly by speeding or reckless driving. However, a Guardia Civil spokesman said motorcyclists rarely failed to pass the breathalyser tests because balance is essential to ride a bike. The campaign ends on Sunday, June 13.

An example of one of the letters being sent out.

Police continue crack-down The National Police reported on Sunday that they have had to deal with almost 20,000 “Nigerian letter” cases since 2003, arresting more than 600 people and recovering more than €2.8 million for the victims. Using just a computer, a printer, postage stamps and a bit of imagination, the gangs were sending out between 20,000 and 30,000 letters a day to targets mainly in the EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia and the Middle East telling them they had won a lottery or received an inheritance. Their names and email addresses were

obtained from marketing, advertising and other companies that sell their lists of clients. The victims were asked for sums of money to cover the money transfers and any taxes involved, and if they were gullible enough to fall for the scam, they usually ended up with empty bank accounts. A National Police spokesman said that the

good news is that fewer letters are being sent out now – some 9,000 a day – thanks to increased vigilance by the authorities. The sad news is that, according to the police, many cases go unreported because the victims are too ashamed to denounce them.

World’s biggest beach towel The Guinness Records organisation confirmed over the weekend that a bar in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria now holds the world record for the biggest beach towel – 2,240 m2 – which it manufactured with support from the town council. The previous record was held by Cyprus. The towel is part of the bid by Las Palmas to be selected as the Culture Capital of Europe 2016. The towel was made with material produced exclusively on

the island and 25 people worked round the clock for 15 days to make it. About 50 people laid out the towel on the beach outside the Bar Tropical on Friday, to be used by 1,000 sunbathers a day over the

weekend. The towel will eventually be cut up into much smaller pieces which will then be sold off, with the proceeds going to several organisations providing social welfare programmes on the island.

Drive-by shooter arrested The Guardia Civil have arrested a man in connection with the drive- by shooting of seven young men and a woman on Friday night in Toledo, injuring six of them. The youths were chatting in a street in Ugena, Toledo province, in the early hours of

Friday morning when more than 30 shots were fired at them from a passing car. With witnesses’ descriptions of the car, a soft top Audi TT, the Guardia traced the man, identified only as A.B.R., to an apartment in the nearby city of Avila and arrested him late

on Saturday night. They found the weapon used in the shooting – a repeater pistol – under a sofa. None of the victims suffered serious injuries. Four of them were allowed to go home after receiving treatment at the local health centre.

Record year for gender murders Since El Mundo printed an article on Saturday about 2010 being a record year so far for gender murders – 31 as of that day – another two women have been killed by their partners. It is the highest figure for the same period during the past ten years. Last year there was a marked drop in gender killings – down to 55 from 76 in 2008 – strengthening the belief that the government’s law against gender violence was giving fruit.

The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has asked Equality Minister Bibiana Aido to explain this “alarming” increase – the highest since the ministry was created two years ago – to Parliament’s Equality Commission.

Last year was one of the worst for Spain from an overall economic point of view, but not in the armaments sector where sales increased by 44% over 2008, earning nearly €1,346 million for the Treasury. Spanish exports in other sectors fell by 16%. According to a report by the Secretary of State for Commerce, the most important customers for

Spanish arms – which range from planes, tanks, jeeps, small arms, antirioting material to hunting shotguns – continued to be the EU countries and NATO, while arms sales to Israel and Morocco dropped. Sales to traditional clients in South America held steady and improved in Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The G36 rifle is one of the weapons that is produced and sold by Spain.

Labour reforms announced

BILBAO. Just over 4,000 people have applied for the 140 vacancies in the Basque Country’s police force, the Ertzaintza - the highest number of applicants since the force was founded 23 years ago. A spokesman said part of the increase is due to the fact that the maximum age for joining the force was raised to 35 to help reduce unemployment.

MADRID. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced last week that the Cabinet will approve labour market reforms at a meeting on June 16th, whether or not the unions and employers have reached an agreement by then. The government wants to make it easier and cheaper to hire and fire staff an in effort to reduce the 20% unemployment rate.

New profile for judges

MADRID. The Royal Household has paid €25,000 for the extra services provided during King Juan Carlos’s four-day stay at the Barcelona hospital where a nodule was removed from his lung. These include extra security guards, and the use of eight rooms in the hospital’s private wing for his aides and for receiving visitors. The operation itself was charged to the health service.

MADRID. Of the 120 newly promoted judges received by Crown Prince Felipe last week, 77 were women with an average age of 30, who speak English and are computer literate. They will be posted to the regions where they are most needed, headed by Catalonia (34), and Andalucia (24), the region where 21 of the new judges were born.

World News White House reporter quits over Israel Helen Thomas, at 89 the longest-serving reporter in the White House, announced her retirement on Monday as a result of controversial remarks she made about Israel. In a video interview with the website RabbiLive.com, when she was asked whether she had any "comments on Israel", she said that Israelis should get "the hell out of Palestine" and suggested they should “go back home to Germany, Poland or the US”. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said her comments were "offensive

and reprehensible". She has since apologised. On Monday the White House Correspondents' Association issued a statement praising Helen Thomas's "long and distinguished career in journalism". The statement said: "Along the way, she shattered many glass ceilings, including serving as the first female president of the White

House Correspondents' Association. We are saddened by her recent comments, but we commend her for a trailblazing career, and we wish her the best." Ms Thomas's comments also sparked criticism from the Obama administration and led to her being dropped as graduation speaker for a local high school.

Mexican charged with giving away kids for debt A Mexican man has confessed to giving his two children away to cancel a 25,000 peso (£1,300) debt, then pretending they had been abducted. Javier Covarrubias's account of how his children were snatched in the street provoked angry demonstrations in Tepito, a poor area of Mexico City, where residents blocked roads and clashed with police in a protest to demand better security. Mr Covarrubias, 20, was

arrested in Hidalgo state after going into hiding when police questioned his account of his children's disappearance. They had discovered CCTV footage that showed he was not in the area at the time, and forensic examination found his wounds were self-

inflicted. When confronted with the evidence, police say Mr Covarrubias confessed to giving away his children, Isis and Darien, and said he had made up the kidnap story so his wife would not find out the truth. The two children are still missing.

Sex tourism campaign launched The Australian government has launched an advertising campaign to accompany tough new laws on sex tourism. Offenders can now be prosecuted in Australia even if their crimes are committed elsewhere. The measures include jail terms of up to

25 years for Australians found guilty of sex crimes against children in foreign countries. Charities in Australia have welcomed the tougher stance and have alleged that Australians have travelled far and wide to abuse children. They blame

organised criminal gangs in Asia, the Pacific, South America and Eastern Europe as well as China for facilitating such "abhorrent behaviour". A 72-year-old man was extradited from Portugal on child sex charges that date back more than a decade.

British man wanted over vandalism An arrest warrant has been issued in Singapore for Lloyd Dane Alexander for vandalism after he allegedly broke into a railway depot and spray-painted a tube train with graffiti. Oliver Fricker, 33, from Switzerland, who the authorities claim was his accomplice, has already been charged with one count of trespassing and two counts of vandalism. He has been bailed and a hearing is set for June 21st. Singapore police said Mr Alexander fled Singapore after the incident in May. Newspapers said he was in Hong Kong. Vandalism in Singapore carries a fine of up to £978.63 ( nearly 2,000 Singapore dollars) or three years in jail and three to eight strokes of a cane. Footage of the graffiti has been posted on websites and blogs. In 1994, Singapore police caned US teenager Michael Fey for vandalism, ignoring leniency pleas by then President Bill Clinton.

Lucknow hero's medals sold Medals belonging to Capt Thomas Waterman, who was reputedly the last British officer to escape from the city of Lucknow as it was sacked, have been sold for £4,400 by Bosleys auctioneers in Marlow, Bucks. Capt Waterman woke up two hours after thousands of Britons, including hundreds of women and children, abandoned Lucknow at the end of a 148-day siege in 1857. He had been wounded during the stand-off and was exhausted. The only way he could escape was through filthy sewers which he managed to do before being reunited with his 13th Native Infantry regiment. After his escape, Capt Waterman was awarded the Punjab Campaign Medal and the Indian Mutiny Medal. Hindu and Muslim troops refused on religious grounds to use cartridges supplied by the army as they believed them to be smeared in animal fat. This

led to what the British described as a mutiny, and what the Indians regard as their first war of independence. A spokesman for Bosleys

auctioneers said Capt Waterman's story inspired the author George MacDonald Fraser to write his famous Flashman novels.

Call to end unfair unpaid work

EWS IN BRIEF

The Institute for Public Policy Research has said too many professions are relying on young people doing unpaid work in sectors like fashion. The TUC said a third of those on work placements and internships are unpaid. One in five businesses are expected to offer work placements and internships this summer, but many - especially in areas like the arts and media - will not pay those employed even though they do productive work. A spokesman for the IPPR called for a culture shiftand described the practice as unfair. Universities Minister David Willetts said it discriminates against the less well off and the government will look into it. However, a spokesman for Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development sounded a note of caution: "If you put more pressure on businesses to pay them more, it could be they say they simply can't take on internships any more, and then we would see a drastic reduction in the opportunities available.”

According to the SUR newspaper, it is the first time that anyone has ever appeared in court in Spain as a result of an animal’s death during a local feria. During the “suelta de vaquillas”, heifers are let loose in a bull ring for the local youths to pretend being bullfighters. It is a traditional feature at ferias

in towns across Spain and the animals are not supposed to be killed. It was banned in Coin several years ago after a young lost his teeth trying to hit a heifer with a hammer. The hammer bounced back off the animal and smashed his jaw. The Andalucian Association against

Correos blacklists People opt for city life council

An Irishman with a police record was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Coín on Monday night in connection with the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Briton Dan Smith outside the Lounge Bar in Riviera del Sol, Mijas Costa late on Saturday night. According to witnesses, two men arrived on a motorbike, one of them dismounted and cleared the area before firing several shots from a semiautomatic weapon at Smith, who was having a drink on the bar's terrace. The two men then got away on the bike. One witness said that earlier in

the evening Smith had stopped the shooter from molesting two girls in the bar but a Guardia Civil spokesman said they were treating it as a vengeance killing.

connection with a shooting on July 7th, 2007, near Chelmsford, when a man in his 50s suffered wounds to his stomach and arms during the attack at his home in Stock.

This hypothesis is supported by reports that Smith, a former builder from Billericay, was wanted in Britain in

Essex Police appealed for information about Smith's whereabouts at the end of July 2007 and he had been on a wanted list.

Poor are getting younger The Catholic charity Caritas has said that the average age of heads of families who are receiving assistance dropped last year – from 37 in 2008 to 27. A spokesman said poor

people are getting even poorer. In 2008, as the economic crisis began to bite, the charity attended to a record number of poor people but that record was broken again last year. He

said the aid most sought from Caritas after help to find work was food, followed by help with finding or keeping a home or with paying monthly bills.

Popular The Guardia spokesman told reporters that judging from the number of wreaths and flowers left at the scene of the killing, Smith was a well known, popular figure in the area. A Foreign Office spokesman has confirmed Smith's death and said his family is being given consular assistance.

RINCON DE LA VIC TORIA. Correos has refused to handle the council’s ingoing and outgoing mail for several days now, because of an unpaid bill amounting to €20,000. Mail can be sent out, if the council uses the old-fashioned way of buying the stamps and sticking them on by hand. But incoming mail will just pile up until the bill is paid.

ANDALUCIA. After a drop in the 1980s in the rural population drain – which started in the 1960s - the number of people opting for city life is on the rise again. The worst affected provinces are Granada and Jaen where 306 towns have lost 40% of their population in the last ten years. The ageing population is also higher there.

Caesareans over limit

Flamenco an intangible heritage

MALAGA. Caesarean deliveries now account for over 20% of all births in the province, despite a World Health Organisation recommendation that they should not exceed 15%. Women opt for this type of delivery because it is less traumatic for mother and baby and birth can be planned, and for doctors it reduces the possibility of being sued for medical negligence.

SEVILLA. The Junta de Andalucia has launched a campaign to have flamenco declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. A Junta spokesman said that over and above being a music and dance genre, flamenco was “a way of life”. The Cervantes Institute, which promotes the Spanish language abroad, will promote the campaign through its 70 branches across the world.

Another ETA ploy?

E

ver since the last truce declared by the Basque terrorist group ETA came to a shattering end with the car bomb that destroyed the T4 car park at Madrid's Barajas airport on December 30th, 2006, Sr Zapatero has done his level best to avoid even mentioning its name. The car bomb attack made him look like a fool – coming the day after he said the news about the peace talks with ETA would be even better “by this time next year”.

W

hen voters in the regional and municipal elections in May 2007 shattered another one of his illusions – that the Socialist Party would do spectacularly well when in fact the Partido Popular got about 200,000 more votes nationwide - he did one of his famous Uturns. He had the police round up as many members of the banned Batasuna party – ETA's political wing – as they could find and sent them all to jail. Just weeks earlier, his government had allowed a couple of parties known to be Batasuna fronts to participate in the elections. They won quite a few municipal council seats and promptly proceeded to tear down the Spanish flag from all public buildings in their areas and to post photos of ETA prisoners and “heroes” all over town. The police wasted hours tearing them down, only to have them reappear on another wall the next day and local courts spent precious hours looking for legal arguments to dislodge these now openly ETA sympathisers.

B

atasuna was banned in 2003 for refusing to comply with the Political Parties Law which stated that to be legal a party had forswear the use of violence to achieve its aims. The Law was passed by the Partido Popular when it was in power - with the support of the Socialist Party led by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. Admittedly he has resisted pressure from his left-wing political allies to “reform” the law. On the other hand, Batasuna has never stopped trying to get back legally into Basque political life by producing obscure parties to front it. For the 2007 elections it came up with the Communist Party of the Basque Country which had barely raised its head, let alone its voice, since it was founded 30 years earlier.

N

ow we find ourselves in an interesting situation in which the so-called “abertzale left” seems to be trying to take over the leadership of the Basque independence movement from ETA. This abertzale left consists of all those left-wing Basque nationalist parties – of which there seems to be dozens - whose declared aim is independence from Spain and which have been known to actively collaborate with ETA by stirring up street violence, collecting “revolutionary taxes” from businesses, distributing

leaflets, etc. owever, if the latest spate of rumours are anything to go by, the abertzale left has finally realised that it will never get anywhere unless it decides to take power via conventional, non-violent means. To do this, it will have to openly spurn ETA or convince the terrorists to give up their arms.

H A

nd it looks as if there is internal dissent in ETA itself. Eight older ETA members who are currently in jail sent an open letter to the organisation a few weeks back, asking its leaders to give up violence and try conventional politics for a change. And there are reports that the independence movement is in the grip of a deep – and hopefully fatal – depression, as they sit back helplessly watching the French and Spanish police arresting those leaders who are still at liberty, and mopping up the inexperienced “young cubs” in the process.

Z

apatero is keeping his mouth firmly shut about all this – making his thoughts and feelings known, mainly through Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba who tries not to crow too much every time a big ETA fish is captured, or Deputy PM Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega. It was de la Vega who told reporters last week that the government does not trust the abertzale left's newly found pacifism, saying it can never participate in elections unless it renounces violence clearly and unequivocally. Meanwhile, the abertzale left apparently plans to make a series of statements over the next few weeks in which it will come out in favour of the “peaceful political way” and reject violence.

M

ost people see the Batasuna's “invisible hand” in all this, as just another attempt to take part legally in next year's regional and local elections. Only time will tell if these people really have seen the error of their ways but as experience with the IRA has shown, it seems that only death can separate old terrorists from their violent ways. If you've lived on an adrenalin high most of your life, how can you possibly settle for a boringly peaceful existence.

es, it was a bad thing what the Israelis did last week when they commandeered a Turkish vessel with a flotilla of activists heading for Gaza. But Israel appeared to have had enough information to conclude that maybe all was not kosher with that aid mission, and it could have been used as a guise for something more sinister.

Y

T

T

nd since IHH was propelled into the news on May 31st, its alleged links with radical Islamic organisations have popped up all over the internet. One interesting piece comes from the NEFA (Nine-Eleven Finding Answers) Foundation, a non-profit research group in the US which tracks terrorism cases. Last week, it released photos of IHH representatives at an IHHsponsored event marking “the martyrdom” of senior Hamas interior minister leader Mohammad Said Seyam, who was killed in an Israeli attack last year. The foundation went on to quote US State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley telling reporters in Washington : “We know that IHH representatives have met with senior Hamas officials in Turkey, Syria and Gaza over the past three years. That is obviously of great concern to us.”

hree Spanish journalist-activists were part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla which was sponsored by the Turkish Islamic charity, the Foundation for Human Rights and Freedom and Humanitarian Relief (IHH). The Spaniards said they were in the press room on board the Mavi Marmara vessel when it was boarded by Israelis as it tried to approach Gaza with food and aid for the Palestinians. The strip has been cut off for the past three years by Israel to prevent the Hamas-controlled government from getting arms. At least nine people—eight Turks and one American—were killed and dozens were injured in the attack. Bowing to increased pressure, Israel has decided to open an inquiry into the incident with international observers serving on the panel.

T

he Spaniards, Manuel Tapial, Laura Arau and David Segarra, are known for their leftist views, especially when it comes to promoting the Palestinian cause. Tapial has written strings of commentary on the subject, including thrashing governments, such as Spain, for dealing with Israel, which he claims has taken an apartheid view with Arabs. Arau, Tapial’s girlfriend, is a television camerawoman who has accompanied him on several missions to the Palestinian refugee camps in Syria and Lebanon, and is also passionate about the issue. Segarra is a television documentary producer who since January has been piecing together a report on the Palestinians for Telesur, the alternative news network created by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. The three met up to begin their journey to Gaza . When their vessel was told to turn back, they refused and the Israelis began boarding their boats. What happened next is under dispute. Videos released by Israel show members of the flotilla bashing the soldiers on board. Tapial said that it was the military units which fired the first shots from the Zodiac launch boats.

he Israelis were well aware of what the Turkish NGO had been up to in the past. Organised in 1992, it was founded on the premise of helping Muslims in Bosnia and Chechnya during the conflicts in those regions. It was investigated for running arms to some of these rebels but no one in the group was indicted on any of these allegations.

A

I

n another report, the Associated Press last Wednesday published an interview with France’s former top anti-terrorism judge who said the IHH had “clear, long-standing ties to terrorism and Jihad.” The retired Judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere said that he didn’t know whether the group still had terror links but it did when he investigated it in the 1990s. “They were basically helping AlQaeda when bin Laden started to want to target US soil,” he said.

T

he Gaza issue is a complex one that needs to be sorted out quickly without putting in jeopardy Israeli security matters, and provoking Israel’s defence forces from reacting violently towards the innocent people who live there. A multi-national monitoring force would perhaps solve a lot of the problems any removal of a blockade may cause until a complete solution for peaceful co-existence is reached between Israel and Palestine . In the meantime, let’s hope that the inquiry into the IHH flotilla fracas clears up a lot of questions on either side.

S.O.S. President The number of dogs turning up at our gates is not slowing down and we at SOS would like to explain the difficulties this brings and plead for patience from those who find animals. If you find an abandoned dog or puppies there are some steps we may have to ask you to take. Firstly, be aware that many abandoned or stray dogs are very nervous so take extra care if you are trying to catch one near a busy road. Frightened dogs have been known to run in front of oncoming traffic. Secondly, if you pick up a dog do take it to a vet to check whether it is microchipped. You may be lucky enough to reunite a lost pet with its owner. If it is not microchipped ask the vet for advice. He may suggest contacting a refuge and that is where we and the other animal charities come in. BUT PLEASE BE AWARE - SOS and the other refuges are FULL. We will do our best to help but we CANNOT guarantee an immediate place. We may have to ask you if you are

prepared to foster the dog for possibly up to 6 weeks (and maybe longer). If you can we will try to help with feeding and vaccination costs. But it is a responsibility you will have to shoulder until we can make space available following the rehoming of one of our existing dogs. There are significant risks involved in putting too many dogs in one pen and we have to avoid overcrowding for the safety of the animals. Puppies bring different problems. Apart from space, we have to avoid the risk of puppies bringing disease into the refuge, however healthy they look. If, for example, they develop Parvo it can sweep through the refuge, leading to high vet bills and potentially risking the lives of the dogs. Again we would ask you to foster the puppies for some weeks, during which time they can be checked for diseases like Parvo and vaccinated. Again, we can help with this. We do not have staff - we rely on a small team of

Keith Williams La Cala de Mijas Thank God for a newspaper that reports on incidents around the world in a proper fashion. I was appalled to read in last week’s edition of The News about the teenagers and young people that beat up a young cow (because that is what it was, it wasn’t a fighting bull) so badly that the poor animal had to be put to sleep by a vet. I have friends in various parts of Spain who tell me that this incident, which happened in our local town of Alhaurin el Grande, was reported all over Spain. It is high time that this kind of behaviour was totally outlawed in Spain. You hear of similar horrendous activities at local fairs all over the country whether it be chucking a chicken or turkey off a church tower, or beating a cow or donkey to death and I have to say that it is utterly beyond me what the local populous find so entertaining about it. It is simply barbaric, unacceptable behaviour. To say that it is “traditional” and should therefore be allowed beggars belief and my Spanish neighbours agree that it should be stopped forthwith. This is not bullfighting by trained matadors (a ‘sport’ I also disagree with) where at least there is some kind of control. I understand that the Mayor of Alhaurin has said that there will be no more of this kind of behaviour at the Alhaurin fair but is it just hollow words to shut us all up? I am sure that The News will be keeping in touch and letting us all know what happened to the thugs and what happens next year. I enjoy your newspaper every week and rely on you to tell me what’s going on in my area. Thanks!

overstretched volunteers who fit their work with SOS around jobs and family commitments. So you would have to be prepared to undertake the necessary visits to the vet for tests and vaccines ( or we could arrange for Wayne the English vet, to visit). In a perfect world we would like to be able to immediately accept an animal when it is brought to us. But we have been overwhelmed by the rise in numbers of abandoned animals, we are constrained by the space available and our funds are tightly stretched, and, in common with the other charities, donations have been hit by the recession. We do not put to sleep healthy animals and we do know just how important it is to protect animals in our care from the dangers of overcrowding. We do hope that you understand why we are not always able to step in straight away and would ask for your continued, valued support. Please contact us on 620 782 484 if you need our help.

A Visitor from outer space If you’re up before sunrise over the next two weeks, you may get the chance to see a visitor from outer space as a comet ambles its way across the midsummer sky. It won’t be a dazzler, but it’s not everyday you see a visitor from the deep reaches of the solar system. And like many comets, this one may be unpredictable and brighten unexpectedly, putting on a good show for early risers at mid month. The comet was discovered in September 2009 by the Australian astronomer Robert McNaught at the Siding Springs Observatory in New South Wales. By convention, the discoverer gets to name the comet so this comet is named after McNaught. Its official name is C/2009 R1 (McNaught), or just Comet McNaught. Like all comets, McNaught is a giant icy snowball about the size of a mountain which is a remnant of the formation of the solar system. It probably comes from the Oort Cloud, a spherical collection of perhaps a trillion comets which may stretch a quarter of the way to the nearest star. Small disruptions by a passing star or by the giant planets of our solar system sometimes nudge a comet out of the Oort Cloud, beginning its long trip towards the Sun - as it gets closer to the Sun it begins to vapourise producing the distinctive comet’s tail. This Comet McNaught appears to be in an open hyperbolic orbit, which means that this is its first

and probably last visit to the inner solar system. The comet is expected to be fairly faint, though you will be able to see it with a small telescope or a decent pair of binoculars. But you never know with comets… their brightness is hard to predict. So there’s a chance it may brighten enough to see with your unaided eye in dark sky. At 4 a.m. or so, look east-northeast about two fist-widths below the Wshaped constellation Cassiopeia. You’ll see a line of bright stars descending diagonally to the northern horizon. These are Mirach and Almaak (in Andromeda), Mirphak (in Perseus), and Capella (in Auriga). The comet follows the line of these stars over the first few weeks of the month. From June 13-15th it lies a few degrees below Mirphak: this is likely the best time to see it, since

the Moon won’t be around to brighten the sky. In binoculars or a small telescope, the comet will look fuzzy and extended and quite unlike the sharp point-like stars. Like most comets, McNaught will get brighter as it gets closer to the sun towards the end of the month. But that means it’s harder to see. After June 15th, it appears to sink about one degree lower in the sky each day and approaches the bright star Capella near sunrise. At month’s end, the comet swings behind the sun, then reappears in the southern sky briefly before it fades from view.

Dear David.... DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children charity, celebrated its main fundraising event of the year last Saturday - and raised more than €42,000. 163 players enjoyed a beautiful day of golf on the Aloha Golf Club course. The 10 winners, 5 ladies and 5 men, received wonderful prizes, including two nights, lunch, dinner and spa at the Hotel Marbella Club, which was offered as one of the first prizes. The organisers highlighted in their speeches the need to keep supporting small causes like DEBRA’s, especially during bad times. They were all very grateful for the support received this year. The day culminated with the charity gala dinner on the terrace of the Aloha House Club, where 152 guests showed great generosity during the raffle and the auction. Two invitations to play with Gonzalo Fernandez Castaño and a golf bag signed by him were some of the items auctioned after the dinner. By the end of the day, a total of €42,200 had been raised at the golf tournament, the day raffle, the dinner, the night raffle, the auction, the sponsorships and other donations. An amazing result for a small charity that competed with other fantastic charity events on the same day. This is a

wonderful sign that Marbella’s social scene is still supporting charities, especially those dedicated to children. Butterfly children are affected by a rare genetic disorder called Epydermolysis bullosa (Butterfly skin) that causes extreme fragility and vulnerability of the dermis. Funds raised will be dedicated to the creation of a Respite Home in Marbella for Butterfly Children, and hopefully it will be inaugurated by the end of this year.

A Marathon report by Maureen Owen, Marathon runner

Marbella-based Maureen Owen this year took up a big challenge - to run the London Marathon just four months short of her 58th birthday! Here she shares her experiences. This year, the 30th anniversary of the London Marathon, a friend of mine in Libya asked his son and two friends who live in the UK, and myself here in Spain, to run to raise money for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation -his 4year-old daughter had died from liver disease. It was a big challenge. I used to run many years ago, but only for leisure, and the farthest distance I had completed was a half marathon 15 years ago. And I will be 59 this August so I was a little concerned that I would find it more difficult with the advancing years not to mention the extra mileage! It is ideal to have been running for at least one year prior to the event. This obviously gives you a head start. There is a ballot system to pick runners and I did not know I had a place until mid-November so I had a bit of catching up to do! And I had to train on my own so that was a challenge. There

are many programmes on the internet and I found one for a novice marathon runner which I liked and I followed it quite strictly especially as the event got closer. It cannot be denied training is hard work, time consuming and,on long runs, often gruelling. You also have to contend with adverse weather conditions, like heavy rain, humidity and heat. Then there is sickness - all can throw your schedule. From my personal experience, the most important points are to follow a schedule and stick to it wherever possible, a good pair of running shoes, determination and perseverence. Anyway, training done, along came the big day. There are so many thousands of runners which means everyone sets off from the starting line at different times. An electronic tag is attached to the laces of one of your running shoes this records the exact time

that you start and also records the time you finish as the tag is cut off your shoes when you cross the finishing line. The strange thing was that although training could be very hard at times, the marathon itself went surprisingly well. Up to the 20 mile mark I was running with ease, had no problems and actually felt I had a lot left in me - until I got shooting pains in my left buttock...I think the sciatic nerve had gone into spasm. This slowed me down a lot but I still completed the 26.2 miles in under 5 hours. I have raised just over £3,000 so far, and the feeling you get at the finishing line when you receive your medal and have your photograph taken is phenomenal and worth every single agonising moment of training. I would certainly do it again and, if not London, I certainly have my sights set on New York...one day perhaps!

Hello David, I trust you are well. We met briefly last year when we suggested a brand of food when one of your Rotties wouldn’t take his food. We have a Golden Retriever and you commented about how well behaved he was. After reading your column in The News I thought I would ask if you can shed any light on something Charlie has started doing. He is nearly four years old and for some reason, during the last 5 or 6 weeks he has started to lick his paws almost non-stop. It is not something he has ever done before and we have lived in our current location for the last nine months so his daily walks aren't taking in new surroundings. Initially we thought he had picked up something "tasty" on his pads when out walking but after a couple of baths and several feet washings it doesn't appear to have made any difference. The

fur around his claws and his feet has started to take on a shade of pink, which I imagine is possibly due to the fact he is making them sore from his licking. He doesn't appear to have any discomfort when walking and there doesn't appear to be any pain and in every other respect he seems in perfect health. I wonder if you might be able to offer some insight? Patrick Dear Patrick I am of the opinion this could be an allergy, possibly to the food. I would certainly see a vet maybe a blood test is required and possibly an injection. Good luck and do not worry - it is not a big problem. David If you have a problem you can write to me at david@thedogman.net and those that might want a one to one consultation call me on 610 868 748.

audience in the area. Availability is governed by the film distributors who have to pay a lot more for the English language versions of movies rather than the English soundtrack discs which accompany Spanish versions of the film. This makes audience numbers critical as the distributors decide where best to show the limited number of

English language versions in their hands. With blockbusters and critically acclaimed films like Alice in Wonderland, The Ghost and How to Slay Your Dragon all in English language format Ricky needs to demonstrate that there is enough interest to keep on bringing the films to Coin. So support your local cinema club and save the movies!

To celebrate this new venture a garden party is being held at La Finca El Sueno on Sunday June 27th from 2 – 5pm to raise much needed funds to enable A.R.C.H. to rescue and treat more horses in need and also to demonstrate what can be achieved with horses that are ‘written off’ by people. Tickets are €10 each including food and drink with €5 for children under 12.

The majority of horses and donkeys rescued by A.R.C.H. are in need of TLC, good food and a check over by a vet, farrier and horse dentist. But some are in need of special care and constant attention, and these are now housed at the new Rehab Centre at La Finca El Sueño in Coin.

Do you want to enter the wonderful world of Alice in Wonderland - to enjoy the antics of Johnny Depp, perfectly cast as the Mad Hatter, and laugh at the scene chewing Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen? Well good, because Ricky Leach, the man behind the English language movies at La Trocha in Coin, has persuaded cinema bosses that there will be a good turn-out for the three showings this week: 6.05pm tonight Wednesday June 9th, and 8.10pm and 10.15pm on Thursday June 10th. acts, a comedian and at least 3 specialist DJ slots, this is a big night for many reasons - if you have a little music in your soul you will want to be there.

This Friday June 11th is probably one of the most musically significant nights that Pógs has ever hosted; this is Jon Tristram’s launch party of his first CD - Audio Pictures. The album, a complete labour of love, blood sweat and tears was recently produced in the UK with the help of Jon’s friends and sponsors, who all dug deep, and came up with the faith and the cash to make Audio Pictures into a reality.

Jon Tristram sings with his heart and soul, his music is modern but yet timeless, inspired by exceptional acoustic artists like John Martyn and Leonard Cohen there is a depth of feeling to his songs which will be appreciated by all who hear them. The launch party is open to everyone and starts at 9.30. There is a € 5 cover charge and well worth it too, with a free drink if you get there early i.e. before 9.30. The party features three more live

The first act is the young and very talented female singer Alice Reay, “Ali”, at 9.30, followed by Jazz Davies, Sarah L.J. Howard, Jus D with comedian Kevin Dewsbury in there somewhere and maybe Gary Young’s band The Modropheniacz. This is loads of great entertainment for one night terminating in a massive set by Jon and the band as he introduces Audio Dreams and the music that inspires him to be an artiste. The Friday night event will be covered live on Global FM with more DJ’s from them. Check out Audio Pictures on face book and remember to take €10 for your CD. Jon Tristram would like to thank the very long list of people who helped him with Audio Pictures.

Carrie v Carrie in battle of heroines

Legion BY SCOTT STEWART Starring Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid A supernatural action thriller in which a rundown diner in the Mojave desert becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race. God has lost faith in mankind and decides to send a legion of angels to earth to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity´s only hope lies in fallen angel Michael (Bettany) who comes to earth, cuts

off his wings, and grabs some automatic weapons, as he bids to save mankind. He is aided by a bunch of no hopers trapped in the diner and he has to lead them into the final battle. His task is to save the life of an unborn baby, who is to be the saviour of mankind. The angel Gabriel (Kevin Durand) is determined to thwart him and kill the

child . There's a couple of scary devil-like bits but don´t worry too much about the plot otherwise you will ask yourself why Michael can walk through a door into a room but then has to blast his way out through a wall. Surely simpler to go the way he came. A bit of summer tosh which won´t be featuring highly on any awards lists.

Ponyo BY HAYAO MIYAZAKI Voices by Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon The cartoon story of a young and overeager goldfish, Ponyo (Noah Cyrus) and her quest to become a girl. It's based on Hans Christian Andersen´s "The Little Mermaid". Stunning animation, with a heartwarming story and a great roster of voices. This is a treat for kids of all ages.

ver the years actresses have strived to make their mark - to find roles that portray women as tough minded, sensible, strong, brave - and sometimes even as the heroine. Think of the mum in Terminator. And we have moved on from the bad old days when the Western writer Max Brand said¨:There should be a woman, but not much of one. A good horse is much more important.”

A

nd now we have a new movie featuring the fabulous four - yep, the Sex and the City gals are back for a second big screen outing. And my, it has been slated by the critics. There may not be so much sex, and they aren’t in the city for very long, but I guess that legions of female fans will still turn out for their fix. But it’s not really about heroines.

I

t’s a chick flick - the 90 minute romcom (except this is two and a half hours). They hate/love each other but true love finds a way; they’ve both got dogs; they fall in love online but unknowingly, and hate each other in real life...

T

hen there is the social commentary brave women in Silkwood or Erin Brockovitch trounce bad men from big, bad businesses - cue for Oscar nominations.

A

A Single Man BY TOM FORD Starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore A stylish, award winning debut for director Ford. Colin Firth's Oscar nominated performance as the grieving professor mourning for his dead boyfriend really should

O

have won him the statue. Packed with early 60s detail and excellent performances all round. Firth´s restrained performance is subtle and moving.

nd what about the terminal illnesses brave young women facing their deaths with stoicism, courage and humour. Get out the hankies for all the women in Terms of Endearment, Stepmom and Steel Magnolias.

M

ind you, we do have the women of action - like Terminator’s Sarah Connor, Catwoman and Lara Croft. But just how many of the above are female role models and not just ciphers? Certainly the SATC gals are not complete airheads wedded to anything by Manolo Blahnik or Marc Jacobs. They all hold down top jobs -

you have to have more than one brain cell if you are going to run an art gallery or write a successful column, be a career minded lawyer or a top PR. So that’s good.

B

ut who are the real heroines - which actresses have helped over the years portray women of real strength. Well, the golden days of Hollywood did throw up some heroines and hard noses - actresses who in real life played hard ball with studio bosses and risked their careers as they fought for female parts that were not just decorative. So Bette Davis gets a big vote from me - and her Margot Channing in All About Eve has a very contemporary feel to it - the woman who tries to have it all.

atherine Hepburn played memorably strong roles - one of my favourites pits her against Spencer Tracy as they play lawyers married to each other in Adam’s Rib - on opposite sides of a case involving women’s rights and managing the fall-out at home.

B

ut if we are really looking for performances from modern actresses that hold the banner aloft for bold, brave heroines then in my book there are two that are unbeatable.

S

igourney Weaver in Ridley Scott’s Alien turned her character Ripley into one of the most powerful and believable screen heroines. She fought for the crew and ship, and blasted the alien. Scott took a gamble on making the Ripley character female. It paid off.

B

ut here is the biggie - who inspired young girls and a million parodies of a hairstyle? Let´s hear it for Princess Leia. In Star Wars she showed girls how to be defiant, brave, politically astute - and she was a crack shot for the rebel forces. Yes, Carrie Fisher as Leia gets my vote over SATC’s Carrie as a role model any day.

If a fruit is picked too early it can leave a bitter taste in the mouth and this is the lesson of the week, Aries. Timing is everything now - it will make or break a situation. You may have been feeling a victim of circumstance and felt that you had to make choices that do not sit well with you. The thing is an unsatisfactory situation is not permanent. Do not waste your time wishing things were different, start the ball rolling where you can, it will be easier than you think. What you need in your life you can find, you just need to reach out and take a risk that may leave you looking a fool, but then in reality perhaps it will leave you looking wise? You are missing some resources that would make life flow easier - make sure you spend your time diligently. Someone has some information that would make all the difference but it will take a lot of courage to ask them to disclose it. If you don’t ask though, Taurus, sometimes you don’t get. There is always something in need of improvement but the thing to remember is you can’t make everything perfect nor please everyone – some people just love to complain. A long-term decision you have made will reach a point of progress and contracts could be signed. Domestic responsibilities are taking up a lot of your time but you will be driven to sort things out even though you really just want to rest. Make time for you this week amongst the daily demands. Confidence oozes from you this week and this will allow openings for you to cross a threshold and receive some unexpected support. As you become liberated from the past you become a more exuberant and independent spirit. Trust your instincts - they are spot on. Even if you have an inner feeling of isolation within, do not let it cloud your vision. It may seem that you are alone but the reality is you are not; there are many admirers and supporters all around you. Even though you feel as though nothing is going to settle down, after months of unrest, I can assure you it is - you will shortly find your footing and know where you are going. The key is to keep objective especially in intense emotional matters, try to keep your head above it all. There has been one desire or worry that has become all consuming of late and perhaps in reality it is not as important as you once thought. Things are finally clicking into place and you are being taken seriously once again. All your efforts are going to pay off as you move into the driver’s seat and take control of the wheel. It is time to take the lead with your own destiny - you know what it is you don’t want to happen, so now you need to steer your way towards a comfortable solution, or accepting a compromise that suits all. Think things through carefully and weigh up all the options.

LIBRA

Some people feel threatened by change and new ideas - they prefer the familiar, it feels safe even if it becomes mundane. Currently you are fighting against this feeling of familiarity as you are aware that there could be a beneficial, exciting option available to you. You are on the cusp of something big, something that could go either way, and something that is in the hands rd September 23 - of fate. This week make sure you remain open minded to new possibilities. nd October 22

Sooner or later there are avenues being put in front of you that you will have to explore, there is perhaps no ideal outcome to a scenario or easy arrangement. Let's face it - you are being challenged but neither can you have it all your own way. Perhaps it is time to have a little faith and optimism towards someone you love and in time it may all seem to make perfect sense. Your energy levels are quite high right now so this is a good time to do something physical.

SAGITTARIUS There are tough choices and decisions to make but the clearest way through it all is to choose the path of honesty even though it can seem the most stressful path to follow. There is something in your life so unpredictable, so unstable that there are times you have trouble finding your footing. What you need is something dependable that you can count on no matter what. Pace nd November 22 - yourself, rest and make time and space for you this week. st December 21

CAPRICORN One minute you are up, the next minute down, sometimes there is calm the next chaos – you have been on a rough wild ride lately and are probably wondering if all the stress is worth it. Realisations are coming that will bring a new motivation to work in a different way. Be ready to turn a corner - you have got something delightful to look forward to. Networking brings happiness December 22nd and acquaintances bring opportunities – your horizons are about to be January 19th widened.

Any house that has inadequate foundations will fall down, and it is the same with life. Sometimes there is a lot of hard work to be done with little to show for it in order to build a strong base - you have to put the work in and most of it goes unseen. But rest assured that whatever ground work and sacrifices you have made on a subject will go a long way to supporting you in the future. Emotional stability is on its way as you let go of past habits and build with tougher materials. Doubts are a hard thing to combat and if you let them they will take you into a downward spiral that is hard to lift yourself up from. There is still a lot in your world that is right so concentrate on the positive things and let your mind move away from the nagging raw feelings within. You may be facing some opposition or someone may be challenging you - remember that those who have true confidence seldom need to be aggressive, they just sit back and watch, respond instead of react.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Last week we had a recipe for red pepper jelly from Caroline MacFarlane so, this week, here's a recipe for something to use it on that's healthy and summery too.

Thai-spiced Salmon

(serves 4)

Ingredients: ● 2.5cm piece fresh root ginger, grated ● 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed ● ¼ tsp chilli powder ● 1 tbsp lime juice ● 1 tsp sesame oil ● 4 pieces salmon fillet with skin, about 250gr each ● 2 tbsp vegetable oil ● Boiled rice and stir-fried vegetables to serve plus red pepper jelly.

Method ● In a bowl, mix the ginger, coriander, chilli powder, lime juice and sesame oil. ● Place the salmon on a wide, non-metallic plate or dish and spoon the mixture over the flesh side of the salmon fillets, spreading it out to coat each piece of salmon

● Cover the dish with clingfilm and chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

the hot pan, skin side down and cook for 4-5 minutes without turning, until the fish is crusty underneath and the flesh flakes easily.

● Heat a wide, heavybased frying or griddle pan with the oil over a high heat. Place the salmon on

● Serve at once with the rice and vegetables – don't forget to put out some of the red pepper jelly!

evenly.

Health&Beauty RESEARCH

Eating food in the middle of the night can seriously damage your teeth, researchers at the University of Copenhagen have warned. night at least twice a week for a little moonlight snack. When the researchers tracked what happened to all of the study participants over a period of six years, they found that nocturnal eaters ended up losing more teeth, even after accounting for other factors such as age, smoking and sugar /

carbohydrate consumption. They blamed this on changes in saliva flow - it tends to dry up at night. They said dentists should make their patients aware of the risks of feasting in the middle of the night. A spokesman for the British Dental Association said: “Eating at night, when the mouth is

driest and any food remains in the mouth longer, accentuates the impact of consuming sugary and acidic food and drinks. To minimise damage, it is important to brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, with one of those brushes coming immediately before bedtime.”

Rosemary reduces toxins in meat

Male menopause 'just a myth' The "male menopause" is a myth, according to a study carried out for the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin. Doctors are divided on the idea that men go through a well-defined "menopause" Some doctors advocate the use of synthetic testosterone to relieve some of the symptoms associated with so-called male menopause such as weakness, depression and sexual problems. But in an editorial in the latest issue, the journal said that unlike the menopause in women, where levels of the female

hormone fall dramatically, testosterone levels fall by only 1% to 2% a year from the age of 40 onwards in men. It said the study found that around 80% of 60-year-olds and half of those in their 80s still have levels within the normal range. The editorial concluded: "There is no place for testosterone therapy in older men without symptoms, or without clearly low

testosterone concentrations on more than one occasion." A spokesman for the Men's Health Forum said: "What the paper is saying is that the doctor must assess the risks versus the benefits of giving testosterone." He said men seeking a "quick fix" for symptoms such as tiredness and lack of sex drive should consider lifestyle changes first.

Happiness comes with age

Midnight snacks bad for teeth Working with colleagues from the US, they examined the medical records of 2,217 Danes already enrolled in a medical study. Of these 173, or 8%, could be classed as nocturnal eaters, that is, they consumed a quarter or more of their daily calories after dinner or would wake up in the middle of the

News - Breakthroughs Treatments - Trends

Cooking meat at high temperatures creates toxins called heterocyclic amines, which have been linked to some cancers. Marinating the meat lowers the risk by preventing the formation of the toxins. A recent study has shown that one ingredient that makes a big difference is rosemary. By adding it to ground beef and other types of muscle meat before grilling, frying, broiling or barbecuing, the study found that it significantly reduced heterocyclic amines. Researchers tested extracts of rosemary on ground beef patties that were cooked at temperatures from 375º to 400º Fahrenheit. The extract was added to both sides of the meat before cooking. The higher the concentration, the greater the reduction in heterocyclic amines, in some cases by over 90%.

Despite all the wrinkles, aches and pains that come with age, a large Gallup poll found that by almost any measure, people get happier as they get older. The 2008 telephone survey covered more than 340,000 people across the US, aged from 18 to 85, and asked several questions about age and sex, current events, personal finances, health and other matters. The survey also asked about “global well-being” by having each person rank overall life satisfaction on a 10-point scale. The results, published online in May, were good news for old people, and for those who are getting old. On the global measure, people start out at age 18 feeling pretty good about themselves, and then, apparently, life begins to throw curve balls. They feel worse and worse until they hit 50. At that point, there is a sharp reversal, and people keep getting happier as they age. By the time they are 85, they are even more satisfied with themselves than they were at 18. In measuring immediate well-being – yesterday’s emotional state – the researchers found that stress declines from age 22 onward, reaching its lowest point at 85. Worry stays fairly steady until 50, then sharply drops off. Anger decreases steadily from 18 on, and sadness rises to a peak at 50, declines to 73, then rises slightly again to 85. Enjoyment and happiness have similar curves: they both decrease gradually until we hit 50, rise steadily for the next 25 years, and then decline very slightly at the end, but they never again reach the low point of our early 50s. The researchers said their findings raised questions that needed more study: “These results say there are distinctive patterns here and it’s worth some research effort to try to figure out what’s going on. Why at age 50 does something seem to start to change?” They said for people under 50 who may sometimes feel gloomy, there may be consolation here: “The view seems a bit bleak right now, but look at the bright side: you are getting old.”

Time called on Liz's assets

Britain may have talent - but not enough to make Simon Cowell happy.

It appears that HD television won´t just show up in glaring technicolour every spot and speck of dandruff - Coronation Street bosses have apparently had to call time on Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald´s low cut tops. The show has just started filming in the super sharp technology and Liz´s tarty outfits look even more revealing as her cleavage bursts out of TV screens. The outfits - worn by Bev Callard, 53 - are to be toned down it has been reported. And it's not the only thing that will have to change on set now the new technology is being used.

Roy's Rolls will have real bacon and eggs and Dev´s corner shop will stock real fruit and veg because in HD viewers would have been able to easily spot that it was fake. The bridge at the end of the street is clearly made of wood, and will also be changed, along with the iconic chimney pots.

Last week´s siege episodes involving Tony Gordon taking hostages at gunpoint were shelved following the shooting tragedy in Cumbria. The climax, meant to air last Friday, will be broadcast tonight (Wednesday) as part of an hour long show, which will include the episode that should have been aired on Monday

(June 7th) at 7.30pm. Monday´s second episode will be shown tomorrow (Thursday) and will be attached to that evening's scheduled episode in another 60 minute screening from 8pm. Schedules will return to normal on Friday.

The man who picked up a BAFTA on Sunday for his work in entertainment is now reported to be planning to take the search for a new star world-wide. He was reportedly frustrated by the quality of contestants in this year's series. And although commentators praised the final for its variety and for being wide open, it was clear there was to be no repeat of the Susan Boyle phenomenon -and no huge payday for Cowell´s production company Syco. So now he is thinking about "The World's Got Talent". It could be held in London next year and draw on the winners and runners-up from the 36 countries that use the "Got Talent" format. It would be broadcast to an

international audience much like the Eurovision Song Contest - with a bumper top prize of £1 million. Spelbound, a stunning acrobatic troupe, won this year´s final in front of an audience that peaked at 14 million to watch them take the crown - 5 million fewer than tuned in last year to watch dance troupe Diversity snatch victory out of SuBo's grasp. It appears that Cowell has made it clear that he will not be signing up any of this year´s artistes. His company has made a fortune from Susan Boyle who just last month was voted as the 7th most influential person in the world by readers of Time magazine.

UK's biggest free motor show The 2010 London Motorexpo kicked off on Monday in the capital's Canary Wharf and plays host to a number of UK debuts. Motorexpo is the largest free motor show in the UK and many new cars will be on display. The show runs till Sunday June 13 and entry is completely free for everyone.

Rossi could be out for the rest of the season as Pedrosa wins Pedrosa’s victory from pole was emphatic and laid the foundations for his first full-on MotoGP title attack since joining the premier class in 2006. The first Italian MotoGP since 2000 to take place without Valentino Rossi has been won by Dani Pedrosa, who dominated the 23-lap race for his and Honda's first victory of the 2010 season. Reigning seven time MotoGP champion Rossi missed his home race after fracturing his right tibia in a qualifying morning highside and could be sidelined for months. Just before the start, Lorenzo held up a message for Fiat Yamaha team-mate Rossi saying "Everyone can feel pain, but not everyone can be a legend”. Dani Pedrosa converted his pole into an early race

the chequered flag. It was the first time ever that a Moto2 race has been won from pole.

Lorenzo shook off Dovizioso in the closing stages to be the only rider to finish all four races this season on the podium, and he now holds a 25 point lead

In the highly exciting Moto2 series Andrea Iannone proved his shock first Moto2 pole wasn't a fluke by crushing the opposition to claim his first

victory in the new 600cc class, in front of his home fans at Mugello. 0.7sec clear of the field at the end of lap one, the Fimmco Speed Up (FTR) rider set a merciless pace up front to build a seven-second lead, before monitoring his advantage to secure a 2.764sec victory at

Bradley Smith finished 4th in the 125cc Grand Prix as Marc Marquez won his first ever grand prix victory by just 0.039sec, as the top four riders in the 125cc Italian Grand Prix at Mugello crossed the line within 0.161sec of each other. Title leaders Nico Terol and Pol Espargaro made an early break, but were caught after eight laps by Marquez and Bradley Smith - with the top four riders then changing positions until the end of the race.

The 28-year old Portadown native is expected to be on the grid with West Surrey Racing in Portimao, on July 4th, and will also appear at Brands Hatch on July 18th and Brno on August 1st, and admits that he is excited, not only about returning to action after being unable to defend his BTCC title, but also about proving himself against some of the best drivers in the world. " We know the WSR guys very well - they're a top team

and have been a big part of my success in recent years,” he noted. “I'm also indebted to team principal Dick Bennetts, with whom we have been working very closely over the past few months to make this deal a reality.”

Turkington will also be familiar with his WTCC mount, as the team wheels out the BMW 320si which he took the 2009 BTCC crown, and admits to being touched by the wave of support from the racing fraternity since the beginning of this season. “We have received hundreds of email messages

of support from our fantastic fan base, and it's going to be great to get back behind the wheel again. I can't wait." Bennetts had this to say: “The team had been looking at both the BTCC and the WTCC, however Colin felt that he'd like a new challenge after being the BTCC champion last year and the BTCC Independents champion for the last three years. The guys have nearly finished rebuilding his BMW and we are just waiting on a fresh engine and some parts from BMW Motorsport, before doing some testing prior to our first race in Portimao on July 4th.” WSR will be competing as Independents and definitely don't underestimate the calibre of the competitors.

England get controversial ref The referee that FIFA have picked to take charge of England's opening World Cup match against USA is a Brazilian who has been dubbed "a crook and a scoundrel". Carlos Simon was suspended by the Brazilian FA for the last six weeks of last season for "a repetition of mistakes". At the last World Cup in Germany he was criticised in some quarters for smiling as he sent o Sweden's Teddy Lucic.

Malaga Instructors Group South Africa have deported First session to improve bowling skills at Benavista BC a great success! A group of enthusiastic bowlers gathered at Benavista BC to take part in the first of a series of sessions designed to improve bowling skills under the auspices of the Spanish Bowls Coaching Scheme, Malaga Group. John Carr, the Malaga Instructors group coordinator, had spent some time liaising with Tony Farmer and other club officials in the planning stages. John was able to call on the services of fellow instructor Barry Pemberton and exSpanish International Malcolm Greenwood to assist in the session. Participants included:Allan Bates, April Barlow, Brenda Marshall, Doreen Fabron, Gill McBride, Ken McBride, Isabella Neilson, Neil Marshall, Sandy Guthrie and Ted Holmes.

Argentine football thugs Ultra-violent Argentinian soccer thugs from groups famed for causing disruption at previous World Cups have been barred from S Africa South Africa has deported 10 suspected Argentine football hooligans who police say were planning to disrupt the World Cup.

The instructors and Bowlers

Skills Addressed:Casting the Jack, Weight Control, Using Other Bowls Reading the Head, Delivery Improvement. The programme also included a short game with modified rules. The session terminated with a group photo and a presentation by club owner, Hughie Holgate, of a bottle of wine each to Gill McBride and Ted Holmes,

judged by the spectators to have got most out of the session. Note: club officials who would be interested in organising a similar session, or a Markers Workshop, should contact John Carr on 952 887 866, Mob. 657 662 762, or email johndavidcarr@bowlingin spain.com. Report & photo by John Carr.

The thugs, part of a larger group of about 80 fans, were arrested at Johannesburg airport and found to be on an entry blacklist. South African police have said that the move shows security preparations ahead of the games are paying off. The men were said to belong to the country's "barras bravas", organised groups renowned for football-related violence. The Argentine barras bravas, ultra-violent football supporter groups, have played a disruptive role at many World Cups.

In Mexico in 1986, fighting between Argentine and English supporters left several fans hospitalised. In Italy in 1990 two factions fought for prized places behind the goal mouth during Argentina matches. In the 1998 World Cup in France, police classified the Argentine barras bravas as the most violent and dangerous fans in Latin America. This year, among those deported from South Africa is the leader of the San Martin barra brava, Sergio Roldan. He is out on bail and is under judicial process for the murder of a 13-year-old boy. There were delays in obtaining his criminal record and he

got as far as South Africa. Within Argentine football the barras bravas have been linked to club management and even national politicians in a Mafia-like relationship. Argentine sports journalists say clubs give them privileges and they act as a kind of "rent-acrowd" during protests and elections for politicians. Players have also complained of threats from barras bravas and extortion rackets. The deportees were detained on Sunday after travelling from Argentina via Luanda in Angola, and deported on Monday. At least two of them were group leaders, and another was out on bail for murder, according to police.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The European Tour is well into it’s stride now as we approach the time of year when big events come along one after the other. A very strong field assembled at Celtic Manor for The Welsh Open to try out the course which is host to this year’s Ryder Cup matches. This was the first event that has been played on the finished layout as it will be for the Cup and it does look spectacular. After the first three days there was little between the leading players. On Sunday however things changed dramatically when local man Rhys Davies started burning up the course followed by Graeme McDowell who had turned in a remarkable seven-under 64 on Saturday. The two men continued to trade birdies and at one time Davies was ten-under for the round in just 13 holes but with McDowell playing a few holes behind he was always able to keep his eye on the Welshman. McDowell eventually closed out the win with a stunning final round of 63 but surely Ryder Cup skipper Colin Montgomerie will be delighted to see him and Davis and, indeed, many others play the course so well.

Robson receives wild card Laura Robson has been given a wild card into the Wimbledon draw - but British men's number two Alex Bogdanovic missed out. Robson, who won the girls' title in 2008, was also handed a place in last year's tournament and put up a brave fight before losing in three sets to former world number five Daniela Hantuchova in the opening round.

England’s Justin Rose wins in the US

Sport on a blustery, almost English-style day, England`s Justin Rose notched his first victory SPOTLIGHT MOTOR RACING

in the United States on Sunday. Rose, a onetime child prodigy who is now 29, shot a flawless round of 66 in the wind at Muirfield Village Golf Club to win the Memorial Tournament by three strokes over the promising young American Rickie Fowler, who closed with a 73. Rose, who birdied six holes and stayed bogey free, came from four strokes off the pace to finish at 18under-par 270 and overtake the faltering Fowler. Rose pulled to within a stroke of Fowler with a 30footer at the ninth hole for his third straight birdie and stayed there with a 22-foot par save at the 10th. Fowler lost the lead for the first time since the 17th hole on Thursday when his tee shot at the par-3 12th hole found the water, leading to a double bogey. Playing in his 162nd PGA Tour event, Rose then seized a moment that

had long eluded him. “I’ve had some opportunities to get it done and haven’t,” said Rose, who has six international victories and won the 2007 European Order of Merit as the top money winner. “So I know how that feels. And it’s amazing, when you do get it done, somehow it feels easy.” He made it look easy on a day that was anything but. Other than Rose, none of the top five when the day began broke par. Ricky Barnes, who started the day tied for second with Tim Petrovic, shot a 73 and tied for third with Bo Van Pelt (69). Petrovic shot a 74 and tied for fifth with Phil Mickelson (69) and Ryan Moore (68). Brendon de Jonge shot 75 and tied for 12th. Tiger Woods (72) finished tied for 19th at six-under 282.
