Bloody Sunday - UK News

Bloody Sunday dead were innocent The Saville Report has ruled that the 13 marchers who were shot dead on January 30th 1972 and the one who died later after British paratroopers opened fire on crowds at a civil rights demonstration in Londonderry were all innocent. A huge cheer erupted in Guildhall Square in Derry as Prime Minister David Cameron delivered the findings which unequivocally blamed the Army for one of the most controversial days in Northern Ireland's history. Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Cameron said what happened on Bloody Sunday was unjustifiable and wrong. He said his government and the country were "deeply sorry" and the findings were "shocking". Mr Cameron said no warning had been given to any civilians before the soldiers opened fire and that none of the soldiers fired in response to attacks by petrol bombers or stone throwers. Some of those killed or injured were clearly fleeing or going to help those injured or dying and

none of the casualties was posing a threat or doing anything that would justify their shooting. Mr Cameron also said many of the soldiers lied about their actions. He said Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, then a Sinn Fein leader, was present and "probably armed with a submachine gun" but did not engage in "any activity that provided any of the soldiers with any justification for opening fire". Bloody Sunday gave

Bloody Sunday dead were innocent By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

What on earth has happened to the weather again? One minute it's scorching hot, the next it's spitting with rain and either so muggy that it's difficult to breathe, or chilly. Mind you, it's not as appalling as the weather they've been having in the north of spain, as reported on page 3. I am not a lover of football but having seen the England goalie let in the goal from Clint Dempsey of the Usa, who also plays for Fulham, I can only say I feel sorry for the poor guy. It seems to me that everybody blames the goalie but let's not forget that there are 10 other players that have failed miserably before it gets to him. so, Rob Green, England goalie and West ham player, don't feel so bad as the rest of the team weren't too special before you let it in, either! the pipe in the gulf of Mexico is still pumping oil at an alarming rate and the pictures on the news networks of the poor sea birds and dolphins are horrible to look at. But why is the whole blame being put at BP's door. they only owned 65% so I hope the rest of the (Us) companies are going to be paying the other 35%. It is reported today that BP have lined up a £5 billion war chest from the banks to pay for the clean-up and their shares have bombed by half on the stock market compared to two months ago. I'd like to see the Us companies share prices and how much they're putting up.

But Mr Cameron was also at pains to point out just how important a role the British Army had played in securing peace and democracy in Nothern Irleand. He said there was no point in softening the content of the report because it did not honour those who served with distinction by hiding from the truth.

courage and professionalism the armed forces showed in upholding the rule of law and democracy and reminded the House of Commons that over 1,000 members of the security forces lost their lives as a result of terrorist activities. And

he

spoke

against the criminal gangs that wanted to drag Nothern Ireland back to its “bitter and bloody” past. What was important was to continue to build a stable and peaceful future. The Saville Inquiry took hundreds of witness statements and is the longest running and most

out

expensive in British history - it took 12 years to complete and cost £200m to produce 5,000 pages and 10 volumes. The decision to prosecute any individual now rests with Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service.

Barcelona bans burqa Town seeks swap The small town of Agalles (pop. 187) wants to break away from Castilla-Leon to become part of Extremadura. To reach Robledo, the nearest town to visit the health centre or do any serious shopping, the inhabitants have to brave an 18 km long mountain road full of hairpin bends and potholes.

Barcelona became the first large Spanish city to announce a ban on the wearing of full Islamic face-veils in some public spaces on Tuesday, followed by Tarragona the same day. A City Council statement said: "Barcelona will forbid the use of the burqa, niqab and any other item which hinders personal identification in any of the city's public installations." The ban would cover public spaces such as municipal offices, public markets and libraries - but not the streets. A council spokesman said the ban would be largely symbolic, since it was uncommon to see women in the city wearing the full veil. The mayor of Barcelona, Jordi

Hereu, said the measure was aimed purely at ensuring people could be identified, and would therefore include balaclavas, motorbike helmets and ski masks. The ban is scheduled to take effect in Barcelona after the summer. The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has called for the ban to be extended to all public places, including on the street. Full veils have already been banned in public spaces in the Catalan

towns of Lleida and El Vendrell, and others are reported to be considering similar measures. In Madrid, Justice Minister Francisco Caamaño told reporters that the future Law on Religious Freedom would also limit the use of the burka in public places. He said: “There are elements such as the burka which are not compatible with the dignity of the human being or with the need to be able to identify people.”

MALAGA

Situated in the south west corner of Salmanca province, Agalles is closer to the boundary with Caceres in Extremadura, only 10 km away and the road is better too. So the town council has written to the Castilla-Leon and Extremadura regional governments proposing that it should be allowed to leave one and join the other.

PP ahead in polls The latest opinion poll puts the Partido Popular 11.8 points ahead of the ruling Socialist Party, which means that if the general election were to be held now, the PP would

win a bigger majority in Parliament than José María Aznar obtained in 2000. It also means that the Socialist party would have its worst election result since 1979.

rains collapse asturias-galicia highway Unseasonal weather is once again hitting the headlines, with heavy rain, winter-like temperatures and storms in many parts of the country. Heavy overnight rain closed schools in Denia, Alicante, on Tuesday “as a precaution”, while the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) was called in to deal with a landslide that threatened to cut off the N634 near Ovieda – the main highway between Asturias and Galicia. The huge drains that bleed off water from the nearby Barayo river to stop it from overflowing had been blocked by debris,

causing a build-up of water which caused the landslide. The highway was closed on Sunday while 49 UME members used five pumps to extract the water but it was touch-and-go for several hours before the danger of a total collapse receded. In the same area on Saturday an elderly woman died when a flash flood swept away the car she and her husband were travelling in. Rescue workers are still

looking for the husband's body. At press time, eleven provinces in the north and in Murcia, Almeria and the Balearic Islands were on yellow alert as the rains swept eastwards across the country. The weathermen say the whole country will enjoy more seasonal weather during the next few days, especially in Andalucia.

Football takes edge off labour reform The government is set to reveal details of its labour market reforms today (Wednesday) the same day as Spain makes its debut in the World Cup. And this is no coincidence, say political observers as far away as New York. According to an article in The New York Times on Monday, Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is hoping that Spain will stay the course so that the mounting excitement as the team wins game after game will keep people's minds off the recent cuts, the reforms, and the high unemployment rate. The World Cup ends just before the holiday season begins and, if all goes well in South Africa, the government can look forward to a three-month break from its economic woes.

For the local media the highlight of his visit was his comment that he wanted to make it quite clear that the British government would never support a change in the status of Gibraltar which was not supported by the people of Gibraltar themselves. The other highlight was when opposition leader Mariano Rajoy presented him with T-shirts with Spain's team colours for his three sons – Antonio, Alberto and Miguel. Clegg's wife Miriam is Spanish.

On Tuesday, as the government failed to gain the support of any of the parliamentary groups for its labour reforms, the unions confirmed that a general strike will be called for September 29th. Development Minister José Blanco told a meeting of the Association of Economic Journalists at the Menendez Pelayo University in Madrid on Tuesday that the country urgently needs a reform of the work market because Spain's main problem is to create more jobs and give stable contracts to workers. The reforms are expected to include a reduction of severance payments, and to make it easier for companies with serious financial problems for six months running to lay off workers – the two aspects the unions find most objectionable.

British swindle trial under way

Spain and Portugal celebrate EEC entry Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero went to Lisbon on Saturday morning to attend the ceremony held to mark Portugal's entry into the EEC 25 years ago, held at Los Jeronimos monastery where the adhesion treaty was signed on June 12th, 1985. Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates came to Madrid later the same day to attend the ceremony there. The leaders who actually signed the adhesion treaty – Spain's Felipe Gonzales and Portugal's Mario Soares – attended both ceremonies. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia hosted the ceremony at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Canadian Brian Geifing and Briton Paul Charleston are on trial in Palma de Mallorca, accused of having swindled at least 35 Britons out of nearly €7 million in investments in a non-existent 18,000housing development in Bulgaria, complete with golf courses, four hotels and ski slopes. They made contact with their victims via a website or directly from a call centre in Palma in 2007 and 2008. They had set up the investment company there with €3,000 to avoid the legal steps needed to do so in Britain. The victims were told that the company – which had a number of unsuspecting partners to give it

respectability - owned the best sites along the main road in Sofia, a major point of entry from Turkey to Europe. Prosecutor Pedro Horrach told the court how the two men ate at the best restaurants in Palma, drove luxury cars and sent their children to the best private schools on the island – until one of the partners began to smell a rat and set a private detective on them and uncovered the scandal. The prosecutor said the money had been converted into “pure smoke” through a series of companies from Morocco to Bulgaria, via Gibraltar and other tax havens. The trial continues.

The Pope, Berlusconi and the PM

EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

During his audience at the Vatican last Thursday, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Pope Benedict XVI discussed Spain’s relations with Cuba where the Pope wants Spain to back the Church’s efforts to get the Cuban government to release some 200 political prisoners. They also discussed the economic crisis and the situation in the Middle East in an atmosphere described as cordial. However, the Pope did indicate that he hoped Sr Zapatero’s Law on Religious Freedom currently in draft

form “would not prosper”. Sr Zapatero had promised to have the law approved in Parliament this summer but the economic crisis is occupying all his time and it looks as if the law will not reach Parliament before the end of the year at the

earliest. It was the third time Sr Zapatero had met the Pope but his first visit to the Vatican. From there, the PM went on to meet President Silvio Berlusconi who surprised reporters after their

meeting, saying: “I’ll leave you with Sr Zapatero so you can ask him about his visit to the Vatican. I have greeted him like a saint because he has just been blessed by the Pope and is in a state of grace”. And he left.

Soldiers to fight fires

Children’s bodies not claimed

MADRID. The Ministry of Defence has announced that 3,000 soldiers from the Emergency Military Unit (UME) will join local fire fighting forces this summer – 1,500 to help put them out and 1,500 to do prevention work. The ministry will also provide more fire fighting planes this year, especially in Galicia, the worst hit region for forest fires last year.

LLORET DEL MAR. The Ayuntamiento gave a “decent” burial last week to the two children who were asphyxiated by their mother in a hotel in the town, and sent its condolences to “family and friends who were unable to attend the funeral”. The mother is in jail in Gerona awaiting trial and their father is in jail in the UK.

House sales go on rising

Woman escapes kidnapping

MADRID. Housing sales rose for the fourth month running in April, according to the property transfer register published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). They rose by 17% over the same month last year. Nearly 60% of the sales were made in Andalucía, Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia. For the first time since January 2008, more older than new houses were sold.

MADRID. The Foreign Ministry has revealed that another Spanish aid worker narrowly escaped being kidnapped in Mauritania last week. She had received a letter demanding money “or you will be kidnapped”, which she took to the Spanish embassy which immediately got her out of the area. Two Spanish aid workers who were kidnapped last November are still being held.

UN calls for humanitarian corridor UN undersecretary-general Lynn Pascow has said Kyrgyzstan must set up a humanitarian corridor to help people aected by deadly fighting between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in the southern cities of Osh and Jalalabad on Thursday last week , which left 138 dead. Mr Pascoe said he also wanted to get help to Uzbekistan to make sure it could deal with tens of thousands of ethnic Uzbeks who fled their homes in Kyrgyzstan and headed for Uzbekistan. At press time, there were more reports of fighting overnight, and there was no indication the violence would end. Kyrgyzstan's

interim government, which came to power after violent protests overthrew the previous administration, has been quick to blame supporters of ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Mr Bakiyev, who now lives in exile in Belarus, still has widespread support in the south, but he has denied whipping up tensions. After briefing the Security

Council on the situation, Mr Pascoe told reporters that he had stressed the need to "get something in there right away". Eyewitnesses in Osh and Jalalabad have reported seeing whole rows of houses burnt down, and bodies lying in the streets. Earlier, UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay said there was evidence of indiscriminate killings -

Child abuse vetting scheme halted Home Secretary Theresa May (pictured below) has announced that the vetting scheme for nine million people working with children and vulnerable adults in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, due to begin next month, is to be put on hold. There will be a review of the entire vetting and barring scheme, aimed at cutting it back to "common-sense levels". It would have been the biggest child protection database in the world. The scheme was a reaction to the murders of two schoolgirls by school caretaker Ian Huntley in Soham in 2002. There had been complaints that requiring the registration of so many people was excessive and created an atmosphere of suspicion. Author Philip Pullman had attacked the original plans, which affected people visiting schools, as "ludicrous and insulting". He and other writers had said they would stop going to schools if the changes went ahead. Head

teachers' leaders had complained the vetting scheme would deter valuable volunteers from helping schools. Mrs May has told reporters the measures were "draconian". The government is now contacting 66,000 organisations, including charities, voluntary groups and education authorities,

to tell them that the planned registration is being cancelled. The Independent Safeguarding Authority, which was set to run this database, will continue to make decisions about barring inappropriate people from jobs. The existing requirements for criminal record checks will continue to apply.

including of children - and of rapes. Pascale Meige Wagner, from the International Committee for the Red Cross, said the death toll was an underestimate because many bodies have not been recovered in the two cities. Ethnic Uzbeks make up about 15% of Kyrgyzstan's 5.5 million people. Central

Asia's patchwork of ethnic groups competing for wealth and resources in countries controlled by their rivals has been described by UN officials as a "tinder-box". They fear that the violence - the worst the region has seen since Soviet times 20 years ago - needs to be stopped quickly, or it could soon spread to other parts of the region.

The Cuban government has freed a paraplegic dissident and moved six others to jails closer to their homes, following talks between Cuban officials and Catholic church leaders who urged them to release Ariel Sigler, 47, on humanitarian grounds. Mr Sigler was arrested in 2003 along with 74 other dissidents. He was found guilty of treason and became paraplegic in jail.. There are still about 180 political prisoners in Cuba, and almost 30 of them are said to suffer serious health problems. The six transferred were among those arrested in 2003. One is Hector Maceda, whose wife leads a pressure group which has demanded the dissidents' release. It brings the number transferred this month to 12.

Obama wants new future of clean energy After visiting areas affected by the BP oil spill, US President Barack Obama called on Monday on his party and supporters to back a "new future" of clean energy. In a statement aimed both at paid-up Democratic Party members and at millions of individuals who backed his 2008 presidential bid online, the president asked his network to lend their name to a campaign to change the way America produces and consumes its energy. Mr Obama was touring Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, on his fourth visit to

the region since the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Mr Obama promised Americans living on the Gulf of Mexico that their beaches would be restored to pristine condition, vowing that he would bring full force to bear on BP to pay for the damage from oil pollution. He said the full resources of government were being deployed, with

17,500 National Guard troops available. Mr Obama said he empathised with those suffering financially from the oil spill, adding that the White House was still gathering facts and stories in order to press BP into awarding adequate compensation. Tens of thousands of barrels of oil a day have gushed into the Gulf of Mexico since a rig

exploded and sank in April. BP placed a containment cap on its damaged oil well earlier this month; by last week, it was collecting about 15,000 barrels of oil a day. The US Coast Guard estimates a daily leak of about 35,000 barrels. BP has said the cost of cleaning up the oil spillage had risen to $1.6 billion.

MPs' salaries from House of Commons authorities. A spokesman said it was a technical discrepancy which often happens when switching payroll systems. He said the shortfall will be made up in their June pay packet. MPs - many of whom are angry with the handling of their expenses - will hold a debate about Ipsa this week. The body began

administering MPs' expenses for the first time after the general election in May, as part of efforts to restore public trust in the system following last year's expenses scandal. MPs themselves voted to hand over administration of their expenses to an independent body but there have been a series of complaints since the new system began work.

Commons leader Sir George Young has told MPs he was "seriously concerned" about complaints the new system was not working. Ipsa has argued that the new rules are such a radical change on the old system implementing them was always going to be a big challenge for those involved.

Mr Goeldi and another Swiss businessman were held after the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was arrested in Switzerland in 2008. The two men were later released on bail and then convicted in absentia while sheltering in the Swiss embassy in Tripoli.

Man arrested for Torremolinos shooting The National Police arrested a 60-year-old Spaniard in Cordoba province last Thursday and charged him with the murder of the 55-year-old owner of a bar in Torremolinos on Wednesday. Witnesses said Juan, the owner, had told the man, identified only as A.T.R., to stop pestering a girl in the bar. He left the bar, saying he would be back, and returned with a gun. Shouting, “It's the last time you'll tell me off in public,” he shot the owner and fled.

Malaga judges to work to rule Drastic

More than 70 magistrates belonging to the Malaga Judges’ General Council have announced their intention to limit themselves to “a reasonable work load” until their demands are met. One of these is for a new system of measuring their work load not linked to their productivity. In a statement, the judges said: “It is regrettable that when millions of Spaniards are suffering horribly as a

result of the economic crisis, when it is so necessary for the courts to respond quickly, that we the judges feel impotent because we cannot satisfy demand given the enormous increase in

cases generated by the crisis, and the powersthat-be do nothing, since they have not adopted to date one single measure that is minimally effective.”

Town hall ban to protect forests Motorbikes and cars have been banned from driving into the forests around Alhaurin el Grande until October 15th in the annual bid to reduce the risk of fires. The Town Hall last week also announced that family get-togethers and barbecues are also prohibited unless authorised by the council. Cyclists, walkers, horse

riders and hikers are still allowed to enter the forests. Environment councillor Diego Naves has reminded residents that this is the international year of biodiversity - a time

to pay special attention to the environment, and has reiterated that the steps taken are to protect the town's rich environmental heritage from the risk of fire.

drop in arrests The police union SUP and the Guardia Civil Unified Association (AUGC) have expressed concern at the huge drop in arrests since both forces started working to rule to protest a cut in salary of some €80 a month when the government’s salary cuts for public sector employees come into force next month. A SUP spokesman said it might not sound a lot but it left a dent in a take-home salary of just over €1,000 or less a month. He said arrests had dropped by as much as 85% throughout Andalucia. The police are only obeying orders from their superiors or judges but are not making arrests on their own initiative. An AUGC spokesman said: “Morale in the Guardia is not just on the ground, you have to look for it in the basement.”

SEVILLE. The gay movement’s “rainbow” flag joined those of Spain, Andalucia and the EU on the city’s Town Hall on June 12th, to stay until the end of June as part of the 2010 Orgullo del Sur (Pride of the South) celebrations to mark International Gay Day. The first Citizens’ Pride Festival will be held from June 22nd to 26th.

TORREMOLINOS. The council has cut back on the number of days for the Virgen del Carmen fiesta in Caruihuela to three - from July 15th to 17th, and the San Miguel feria in September is to suffer the same fate. The summer music festivals in the different districts will last one day instead of seven, with recorded not live music.

Town to ban burka

Drivers addicted to mobile

COIN. The council is expected to ban the burka and the niqab at its next plenary session on June 28th, making it the first municipality in Malaga province to do so.

MALAGA. Drivers throughout the province are reluctant to keep their hands off their mobiles while in motion, despite the risk of being fined if caught. Local Police figures show that fines for this infraction continue to increase and have doubled since 2005, when the Traffic Authority started its campaign to make drivers aware of the risks of talking while driving.

A spokesman for the Moslem community said the move surprised him because during the eight years he has lived in the town he has never seen either garment used.

Trimming the public sector

W

T

e’ve seen more of former Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez on TV these past few days than we have since the Socialists returned to power in 2004. Gonzalez, of course, celebrated that triumph but then sort of gently faded away. It was assumed he didn’t want to take the spotlight away from Zapatero but there are rumours of a lack of empathy between the two. Zapatero – still untried – would obviously feel a bit uncomfortable in the presence of the man who did so much to drag Spain into the 20th century. Gonzalez carried on where King Juan Carlos and Adolfo Suarez left off at the end of the Transition period. The King took a back seat after the new Constitution was ratified in the December 1978 referendum and it soon became obvious that while Suarez had done a brilliant job dismantling the Franco regime - legalising the political parties and the unions, among other things – he was not so brilliant at building a democracy. So there were many things to be done when Gonzalez won the 1982 election to become the first Socialist Prime Minister of the post-Franco era.

H

e led Spain into the EEC and the ceremonies held in Spain and Portugal this weekend as both countries celebrated the 25th anniversary of their adhesion brought back vivid memories. People had forgotten how young Gonzalez was when he became PM – only 40 – and hardly recognised the boyish-looking man the cameras recorded for posterity signing the book along with Portugal’s Mario Soares. Unfortunately, Gonzalez’s speech at the ceremony only underlined that fact that he is an intellectual giant alongside Zapatero. That was also obvious a couple of days earlier at the ceremony held to mark the 100th anniversary of Socialist Party founder Pablo Iglesias taking up his seat in Parliament. A great fuss was made of it – especially as Iglesias was the first socialist to enter Parliament – but the main reason for it was that the Socialists desperately need a few straws to clutch at these days. At that ceremony, Gonzalez came out fighting: “Cuando las cosas van mal, militancia pura y dura “(When things get bad, militancy pure and hard)”. In other words, now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party. Meanwhile Zapatero waffled on about the tough cuts he is having to make – which he wouldn’t have had to do now if he hadn’t denied the existence of an economic crisis when it first raised its ugly head.

M

ost Spaniards respect Gonzalez for all the good things he did when in power. At the Iglesias ceremony he reminded people that when the Socialists won the 1982 election the average per capita income was $4,500 a year. Now it’s $34,000. His government also gave free education to all children under the age of 16, created more university places and introduced a modern social security system, among other things. On an international level, Gonzalez took Spain into NATO and supported the USA in the

he government has been silent about it but the writing is on the wall. With all the drastic measures aimed at reducing the massive deficit coming in piecemeal, the Socialists have not yet mentioned anything about layoffs in the public sector. But given that spending reductions are in full swing and Spain’s overburdening bureaucracy has gotten too big for its own good, it is just a matter of time before the government will have to take a serious look at whether job reductions are necessary.

E Mariano Rajoy.

First Gulf War.

T

he downside was that he failed to deliver on his promise to create 800,000 new jobs, and his government's restructuring of the steel industry actually resulted in job lay-offs, especially in the provinces. When Gonzalez handed over the reins of government to Jose Maria Aznar, the unemployment rate stood at 25%.

D

espite the huge gap in their accomplishments, Gonzalez and Zapatero have some things in common. Zapatero is living under the threat of a general strike – Gonzalez lived through one in December 1988, which completely paralysed the country, with the unions and the left wing of the Socialist Party accusing González of moving to the right.

G

onzalez kept winning elections but with an ever-decreasing minority until he was forced to form pacts with the Catalan and Basque nationalist parties in order to stay in power after the 1993 election, as Zapatero has had to do since 2004. By 1995 the party was in two minds as to whether González should lead it into the next general election. He was associated in the public mind with the bad economic situation – just like Zapatero now - but there was no other suitable candidate and González lost the 1996 election to the Partido Popular.

T

he latest poll shows that if there were an election now, the Partido Popular would win with an even bigger majority than Jose Maria Aznar obtained in 2000. The estimated vote of 45.3% would be the highest obtained in the party’s history. And the result for the Socialist Party – 33% - would be the worst since 1979, when it came second with 30%.

Y

es, your party needs you, Sr Gonzalez – quite desperately, in fact. But if I were you I would quietly disappear off the scene again. All your past mistakes have been forgotten and people only remember the good you did. Why tarnish your image trying to save the man who looks like going down in history as the worst PM the country has ever had?

arlier this month during a session in Congress and when pressed by the opposition Popular Party, Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero acknowledged that his government would reduce the number of ministries. A few, such as the Equality Ministry, which was created by his Socialist government, don’t appear to have a clear purpose. Socialist sources insist that streamlining ministries shouldn’t be interpreted as the first step to public sector layoffs. Where those workers will be relocated when and if the ministries are consolidated isn’t clear. But with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent announcement that she will be slashing some 15,000 government positions by 2014 and Britain set to release a series of money-saving measures next month, it would be surprising if Spain didn’t follow suit.

T

he public sector is already shellshocked over Zapatero’s first in a series of belt-tightening strategies that went straight for government employees’ pocketbooks. Beginning July 1st, they will see their paychecks reduced by a 5% average. When this occurs in the private sector, companies usually reduce their payroll before undertaking more extreme measures such as letting people go in order to survive. The problem for Zapatero is that putting government workers on the street would only serve to send Spain’s record-high unemployment rate through the roof. The Socialists have been sacrificing little by little of what is left of their political fortunes to keep this country afloat.

A

nd now the labour unions are calling for a general strike this fall, which serves no purpose but to add more tension and confusion to an already perplexed situation. They are protesting

the Cabinet’s approval today of the final version of the decree that is expected to set in motion a much-needed, long-awaited and perhaps late-in-coming labour reform package. Neither the trade unions nor the nation’s employers’ groups believe the measures will create new jobs or stimulate the economy. The Socialists will push it through Congress next week without their support. But this job overhaul plan offers a fair balance to workers and the companies that hire them. Among the points, it lifts great barriers for firms with financial problems to lay off workers without themselves going bankrupt in the process as a result of paying out huge amounts in severance. In turn, the government prays that this guarantee will encourage companies to put more people on permanent work contracts – a farfetched dream but something to grasp on.

T

he June 8th strike the unions held for public employees was a complete failure. There were more government workers at their posts that day than they were on the streets. And I predict more than just the few will be at their work stations during the general strike because these days no one can afford to be penalised a day’s pay. Union leaders know that they cannot go on calling strikes each time an austerity measure is approved by the government – it would continue to downgrade their credibility. And more belt-tightening is underway, including government downsizing.

Burqa ban

B

arcelona will ban the use of the fullface Islamic veil in public buildings. Mayor Jordi Hereu said he will sign a decree prohibiting the burqa in all public spaces, including municipal markets. But the Catalan Socialist mayor says the aim is mainly for security reasons because people must be able to be identified. Coín in Malaga province is also studying a similar proposal, joining Tarragona and Gerona in Catalonia proposing the ban. The region’s towns of Lerida and El Venrell have already banned it. The burqa is seen by many Westerners as uncanny or discriminatory. Although it should be respected as a religious right, public security in Spain should take considerable priority over tradition.

Benahavis Dave of The News’ back page Dave’s Drives is by no means the first to query why Europe's "home" Ryder Cup matches are no longer played on links courses- and he certainly won't be the last. Having spent more than 30 years covering professional golf, including the majority of the contests against the USA, from the tied match at Royal Birkdale in 1969 to the first in Europe at Valderrama in 1997, I can give him the answers, and he probably won't be surprised to learn that they are mostly to do with money. The last "links" match was the 50th anniversary of the contest in 1977 at Royal Lytham St Anne’s. Prior to that, home matches between GB and Ireland and the USA were invariably held on seaside courses or links-type like Lindrick or Ganton. The contests were organised and run by the respective PGAs, the income generated being used to fund the club-orientated operation of the Professional Golfers Association until the next match in four years time. Tradition, not commercialism, was the major factor, and the quality of the course was of paramount concern. There was ready cooperation from all the courses on the Open Championship rota, although the so called disadvantage of the American players on links courses had long since become a myth. (Look at the results since 1927, and the number of American Open victories.) In 1977 GB and Ireland were so badly beaten at Royal Lytham that Jack Nicklaus subsequently wrote to Lord Derby, President of the British and Irish PGA, suggesting that if the match was to survive, GB and Ireland had to expand to accommodate the best of the new breed of European

professionals. He was thinking particularly of Spanish players like Seve Ballesteros, Manuel Pinero, and Antonio Garrido. Not forgetting that Tony Jacklin (Open champion in 1969 and US Open winner in 1970) was inspiring a new generation of British tournament pros like Faldo, Lyle and Woosnam. Lord Derby agreed with Nicklaus and the necessary changes were made in time for the 1979 match at the Greenbrier West Virginia where Seve and Garrido became the first Europeans to play. The first home game to embrace the European concept was at Walton Heath in 1981.Behind the scenes a battle was raging , between the old PGA (representing the club professionals for whom the match was originally envisaged), and the newly independent Tournament Players Division. The PGA was forced to concede financial control to the Tournament Players in return for enough money to keep their financially strapped organisation in existence. At that time, the Ryder Cup accounts, which were never made public, always showed a deficit. Once the TPD under Ken Schofield and George O'Grady took over full control, Europe began to take off as a major force in the match. While the PGA retreated to new headquarters at The Belfry, the TPD set up their HQ at Wentworth, and set out to make the Ryder Cup the great showpiece it is today. Europe should have won at Palm Beach Florida in 1983, but did so at the Belfry in 1985 where multisponsorship on a custom-built course paying for the privilege of staging the match resulted in a handsome profit to the benefit of both the TPD and the PGA club pros side.No one could pretend that the Belfry was a venue

anywhere near as good as any of the previous links courses, but it had the priceless advantages of having excellent road, rail and air communications, and ample hotel accommodation. The match has been held there on three further occasions, and a former potato farm is now on the map as a prime golf venue. The same formula held for Valderrama, where not only the club but also the Andalucian government made substantial contributions to the large profit. Real estate sales were just one of the spin offs for the Patino family.Next came the K Club in Ireland in 2006 where multi millionaire Smurfitt paid his dues, and this year it will be Celtic Manor where its wealthy owner Terry Matthews has created a custom-built course for the occasion. On the horizon is Gleneagles in 2014. Madrid and Paris are looking for a slice of the action in 2018. I am prepared to wager, that apart from possibly St Andrews to mark some future anniversary, the Ryder Cup will never again be held on a links course. It now makes upwards of £25 million profit each time it is played on this side of the Atlantic. So why change? Anyway British/European players are no better at links golf than anyone else. Our last Open winner was Paul Lawrie at Carnoustie in 1999, where the rough was waist high, and the weather dreadful - just right for an Aberdonian! Even then he needed a madcap paddle by Jean Van de Velde at the last hole to hand him the old jug. There are high hopes that there will be a "British" Open winner at St Andrews next month- we shall see. In the meantime keep up the good work in The News!

The Summer Solstice Next Monday June 21st is a very important day in the astronomical calendar; it is the summer solstice or the longest day. The Earth is not standing straight up on its end but instead is tilted over by about 23 ½ °. It is this tilt that gives us our seasons with long hot days in the summer and short cold days in the winter. After this date the days will gradually begin to get shorter and the nights will become longer. Map makers have placed 5 imaginary lines running around the Earth that mark the extremes of the Sun’s position throughout the year. Around the middle of the Earth is the equator, on this line the Sun will be directly overhead during the equinoxes that occur on March 21st and September 21st. 23 ½ ° above and below the equator is the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn - these two lines mark the maximum that the Sun can be overhead in the North and South hemispheres. Still further north is the Arctic Circle; here the Sun will not set on June 21st and will not rise on December 21st - the shortest day. In the south there is the Antarctic Circle where the opposite is true. If you stand outside at 2.20pm on Monday and look for your shadow it will be almost directly under your feet as the Sun will be due south and at its highest in the sky. The Solstice was such an important date in the Pagan calendar that Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, is thought to have been built to

commemorate the event. Thousands of new age Druids will be meeting at Stonehenge to witness the Sun rise. Viewed from inside the circle of stones the Sun will rise over ‘The Heel Stone’ - an extra stone positioned about 100 yards away from the main circle. The Sun’s rays will then shine directly through the main ‘entrance’ right into the centre of the circle of stones. Anybody who has ever visited Stonehenge cannot help but marvel at the construction of these huge stones and wonder just how on earth they managed to raise the stones to fit on top of the uprights all those thousands of years ago. Archeologists have dated Stonehenge from about 2500BC although it was probably worked on and improved over a period of more than 1,500 years. Before the construction of the stones began it is thought that a wooden structure was built on the site that dates back to over 8000BC so there was obviously something special about this place

that has been known for over 10,000 years. VENUS.

You must have noticed the very bright ‘star’ shining brightly in the west after sunset - it is the planet Venus. If you have a pair of binoculars, try looking at Venus on Sunday night June 20th as it passes through a very nice group of about 500 stars known as the Beehive cluster; it will be quite impressive!

Dear David.... I wonder if you could give me some advice. We have a X Breton spaniel (not sure with what although her face looks like a Jack Russell but the rest of her is definitely spaniel) for a month on trial as the lady that had her has gone back to theUK to sort stuff out for that time and then is coming back to Spain before moving back to UK permanently. She is 4 years old and the lady said that she is good with families - other than that, we don't know much about the dog. She likes a lot of strokes and attention but only from my son (16 years old), my daughter (12 years old) and myself. She has nipped my husband and growled yesterday at him when he was stroking her. She nipped my son's friend yesterday and growled at him again when being stroked (at her level, not standing up). She is afraid of men, except for my son who she adores. Also if I try to introduce her to a friend, female, she cowers and I have to be knelt down with her saying it's OK. Personally, my husband and I feel that if she has gone for a child of 16 and continues to distrust my husband then we should let her go back to the lady who owned her, perhaps to find someone else that is more suitable to Lady (dog's name).Due to the fact that she is extremely distrustful of males, at the age of 4 is this likely to change? Is there anything we can do, to make her more accepting of humans generally. We are a family and we want a good family dog, that we feel is safe to take out and interact with other people and dogs. She does not play. We bought her a squeaky toy and a ball and she does not know what to do with them. My husband has been feeding her to try and get her to trust him but it makes no difference. She

eyes him warily and will wait until he walks away before eating. She is also not very keen on traffic and is continually jumpy. We have had a labrador before, my parents have a white alsation and my sister has had a mixed breed and a cocker spaniel so we are very dog orientated. Any advice would be appreciated. Kind regards, Sue Hello Susan It is most important to give the dog space and not to overwhelm her. Tell your old man to back off and leave the dog alone, the dog will eventually come to him in her own time. You can over stroke a new dog, and by the way ,I strongly recommend that this dog is not allowed in your son’s bedroom. Dogs are not mistrustful of males, they are mistrustful of any form of body language aggression which many men have by proving they are the boss. Often not intended. At this stage do not try to introduce her to anyone outside the family, this will cause her a lot of stress. This type of dog is inclined to hide behind people or go inbetween the legs and this must not be allowed. I would keep her away from the front door when visitors arrive and to keep her in another room for a month or longer until she is ok with all the family. I urge you to go to a school, (Try Viv on 606 611 540: she worked with me for 10 years and is the best) where you will be able to learn how to walk her correctly and sit, this would be the start to changing the dog to understand we are friends. On no account should she be corrected at this stage. Keep in mind - Fear, Fright, Bite. Best of luck David

Noche de San Juan - a magical night WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean

A I

ndalucians love a good party and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate with over 3,000 festivals every year. f it's not Three Kings or Semana Santa, it's fairs, ferias and pilgrimages, carnivals, lively recreations of the battles between Moors and Christians or religious processions and commemorations for the patron Saints of each pueblo.

O

ne of the most remarkable is Noche de San Juan - the Night of St John, on the heels of the longest night of the year. The beaches of Andalucia play host to thousands of people who camp out all night, warmed by the blaze of bonfires, and enthralled by the fireworks, as they eat and drink and dance with friends and family. Young and old play their part in building the bonfires which light up the night sky. Like so many other festivities in Spain the history is shrouded in religion or rooted in beliefs held long ago but it

really doesn’t matter to the party goers.

I

t's a celebration of an old Pagan event and marks the "beginning" of summer - the fire of the bonfires purifies, and the water of the sea cleanses and rejuvenates. So if you head to one of the beaches be prepared for fun - if you are athletic enough or prepared to brave the sea you can take part in the rituals of the night...there will be plenty of other people doing just that.

A

O

ccording to tradition, if people jump over the bonfire three times on the Night of St John their body and soul will be purified and they will find that their problems have been burned away. And at midnight hundreds of people rush into the sea - some say it symbolises the baptisms by John the Baptist. Others believe that if you wash your feet and face three times you will be granted three wishes and have a happy year - so there's lots to play for!

ne of the other great spectacles is the burning at midnight of effigies specially prepared for the occasion. It was believed that they represented Judas Iscariot although the religious interpretation has taken something of a back seat for many, and now they can represent well known personalities and be very elaborate again their burning is supposed to bring good luck.

T

own Halls turn a blind eye to "No Camping" rules on the beaches and everyone turns up prepared to spend the night and see dawn break the next day. All are welcome at this spectacular event - so take something to eat and drink...as well as the burning of the bonfires and the effigies, and the rushing into the sea, there is always plenty of other entertainment. So, start practising your leaping - or just be ready to brave the chilly sea - and enter the spirit of Noche de San Juan.

Let’s Party!

Johnny and George live at Linda’s Bar tonight

Following the huge success of last year’s street party at JK’s in Coin, they’re doing it again only it’s going to be even bigger and better!

There are not one but two great shows at Linda’s Music Bar in Fuengirola tonight (Wednesday ). For one night only, Johnny Westwood will share the stage with Keith George.

Hundreds of people turned out last year to enjoy the atmosphere and sunshine for the street party of the year with bands, food, stalls and games for the children. This year there will be even more acts with bands such as Southern Impact, The Raw, Jitterbugs, Rob Stevens and Guest, Pete “The Voice” Carter and local talent Mike Briant. There are already 15 stalls booked including arts and crafts and, if you fancy having a stall yourself, call Duncan on

Catering will be supplied by Flavours of Jamaica where you can sample Carribean delights including Jerk Chicken, Saltfish Fritters, Banana Fritters and much more. Steve’s now famous spitroast chicken and BBQ will also be there to supply you with delicious food.

Entrance to this fabulous event, which will be raising money for charities such as Cudeca and local children’s charities plus MacMillan nurses and others, is just €3 with children’s entrance free.

Of course, for the men (and women) who don’t necessarily want to wander around the stalls all afternoon, they can sit and have a beer and watch

The event is taking place on Sunday June 27th from mid-day onwards at JK’s on the poligono industrial La Trocha in Coin and, if you missed last year’s don’t lose out this year!

Johnny’s country and western show starts at 9 pm followed by The Boy George Experience, a great tribute show dedicated to

Keith George puts a lot into his performances and his audiences love him for his flamboyant costumes, dedication and overall “Georgeness” which he uses to capture the distinctive gender bender sound of the early 80s known as new romantic.

Johnny Westwood’s equivalent dedication and talent endear him equally to his fans and for much the same reason - both men are professional showmen who deliver a great performance - so, for one night only - and that’s tonight - make sure you catch these two larger than life shows.

Letters to Juliet BY GARY WINICK Starring Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave Seyfried currently seems to be cornering the market for roles involving letter writing (see Dear John). In this movie she travels to Verona, home of the star crossed lover Juliet Capulet - you know, the one who dies in Romeo and Juliet. While her fiance is off working Seyfried gets caught up helping a group of volunteers who respond to letters from around the world seeking romantic

advice from the tragic Juliet. Now this bit is based on a true tale although why anyone would be mad enough to think that Juliet would be a great source of advice, who knows. For the purposes of the plot Seyfried discovers a letter written by an Englishwoman in 1951 she writes back more in hope than expectation but hey ho, grandmother Vanessa Redgrave turns up

in response, with her grandson in tow, seeking her long lost Italian love. So, a romance, set against beautiful Italian scenery, with a plot that cannot be described as complex but a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Interesting fact - Franco Nero, Redgrave´s real life partner, plays her long lost love...the first time they have acted together since Camelot in 1966.

Shutter Island BY MARTIN SCORSESE Starring Leonardo DiCaprio US Marshalls Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) arrive on a remote island off Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious

disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress of a hospital for the criminally insane. Maybe not Scorsese's best but plenty of chills.

Edge of Darkness BY MARTIN CAMPBELL Starring Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone Based on the compelling BBC TV series of the same name this grim revenge thriller sees Mel Gibson caught up in a big bad business conspiracy

when he investigates the death of his daughter. Ray Winstone is a tough bad guy. Campbell directed the original series.

F

ootball is not my thing. Not even World Cup Football. Not even England or Spain playing in World Cup football. I don’t even like hearing it on the television. Football-fan-crowd-roar is one of those noises that go straight through me, like someone else’s baby crying or finger nails being scratched down a blackboard. I can see I’m in for a tough few weeks while everyone else works out their World Cup fever.

H

owever, I do like Bend It Like Beckham. This funny British football film was released in 2002 and immediately surprised everyone by bringing together a number of social and racial issues under one unlikely roof. Firstly there is the whole issue of girls playing footie in the first place, something that is probably dealt with without too much trouble in most situations these days, except in the orthodox Sikh Bhamra family in Hounslow. Younger daughter Jessminder, ‘Jess’, (Parminder Nagra, later of ER fame)loves nothing more than to play football with her friends in the park and eventually gets a try out for the local Hounslow Harriers team, encouraged along the way by her ve unorthodox best friend Jules, played by Keira Knightly and devilishly attractive coach Joe, played by the dashing Mr Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

T

hrow in an older sister stamping her feet about having a traditional Sikh wedding, a best friend who is gay and trying to hide it from his family, add a bit of sour grapes from Jess’ s dad - denied a chance to play cricket at his local club on account of his not being English and the opportunities for some gentle selfmocking are almost limitless. Following on from the success of pop hit Brimful of Asha, East is East in 1999 and the popularity of BBC comedy The Kumars at No. 42, Bend it like Beckham rode in the slip stream of a very public awakening to the rich culture and comedy present in British Indian culture.

I

n the end, Bend It Like Beckham is a lesson to us all in allowing everyone to

achieve their own potential. A bit fluffy around the edges but well acted, funny and very well presented, the film provided an important stepping stone for the careers of Knightly, Rhys Meyers and Nagra.

G

oal! on the other hand is not funny and has not provided any significant career leg-ups for its cast. The first in a trilogy of films about the beautiful game, Goal! was released in 2005, just in time for the last World Cup frenzy. The story follows the trials and tribulations of a young talented player from Mexico, growing up illegally in Los Angeles and dreaming of making it big as a world class football player. Through a series of unbelievably lucky turns and second chances, Santiago Muñez, played by Kuno Becker, winds up playing at Newcastle, having left behind an unsupportive father and a doting Granny.

B

attling against prejudice, inexperience and asthma, the young Santiago makes it to some big matches and discovers from Granny that his recently demised father did get to see him on TV playing against Fulham just before his own final whistle was blown. As you’d expect, the old boy had been promptly and quite rightly, filled with pride and remorse in equal measures.

G

oal! was made with FIFA cooperation and many premier league clubs and players can be spotted throughout the course of the film. David Beckham, Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard apparently all make cameo appearances, which may add sparkle and zing for football fans but didn’t help the film along much for me, although I did recognize Beckham because I’ve seen him on TV before with that Spice Girl.

I

t may be a game of two halves making up ninety minutes in total but Goal! comes in at a tad under 2 hours and with no oranges at half time, it’s almost worse to have to sit through than a real football match. I think I’ll be watching Dulux! before settling down to watch the rest of the Goal! trilogy.

Hope is your keyword this week - there are fresh possibilities on the horizon and even if you cannot see them you can smell them. Travel is highlighted as you break free from the normal routine and go where you long to be. You are not apt to prepare too much in advance but having a plan to stick to can help you remember what it is you want to achieve and need. Have fun, enjoy yourself and revel in the fact you are alive, well and healthy. You are like a farmer this week sowing your seeds so that they can provide you with years of prosperity and abundance. New business ideas are put into motion – just remember that you are way ahead of your time and don’t be put off by those with less vision than yourself. Take the risks and chances that you know are right for you, brave steps into the future will seal the door on an old issue that needs laying to rest. You will be amazed at how much you are supported once you truly move on. Multiple choice, there are just too many things to think about and this could send you into an emotional tizzy. Your emotions could be all over the show at the moment so the best way to deal with it all is to rise above it and look at the facts. Magnetism is running high so be prepared to attract all sorts of characters into your life, they will come flocking from afar and it is up to you to choose who you wish to spend your time with, discernment is a quality you will definitely need. There are some things in life we can change, others we can’t and the wisdom is in knowing the difference, this is what it is like for you right now, there are situations out there that are currently beyond your ability to control. Live in the now, be in the moment – one thing you certainly can’t hurry is love for instance. There are opportunities coming your way and if you focus on the present and not what could be, you will be able to take full advantage of them. You are being asked to ‘do the right thing’ against all of the odds and there are many eyes upon you wondering which path you are going to take. A crossroads is before you, take your time and contemplate all the many advantages and disadvantages of each road before making a final choice, there is no hurry yet - only the pressure you are putting upon yourself. Pay attention to the details and make sure you have all your bases covered, that way you won’t overlook any vital information. Money is on its way, financial matters are looking up – perhaps there are employment offers in the wings? You could be offered something that is out of your usual field of expertise but on the other hand is challenging you to move into an area that could expand your horizons. Watch those nerves as you do tend to worry quite a bit, especially when it comes to anything that you have not experienced before but once embroiled in a situation you are set to shine.

Pay attention to your feelings this week, they are the key to success, feeding your passion and drive. When you put your heart and soul into anything you automatically become the leader and others look to you for direction and guidance. The safe route is likely to seem boring and mundane still and you are longing for a new adventure and a chance to start out afresh, to learn and discover new things. You are craving this change but are also a little afraid of the instability of it all. If you put in the work you need to now then the change will not seem such a hurdle as you would have done the much needed preparation in advance. So even though it all seems boring it is your time to knuckle down.

As the weather is getting a little better, pasta seems to be the best thing for around now as it is warming on chilly evenings but light enough for when it turns hot. This recipe is a vegetarian one but non-veggies can add some lardons, crispy bacon or just use this as a base for a fishy pasta and add some prawns and mussels if they want. Jars of capers are easy to get here too.

Spaghetti with tomato and caper sauce - & bacon for non-veggies!

(serves 4)

Ingredients: ● 500gr tomato frito (or you can use 800gr fresh tomatoes and make it yourself) ● 1 tsp olive oil ● 2 garlic cloves ● 2 tbsp capers ● 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar ● 500gr spaghetti ● Salt

Method ● Heat the oil in a large, heavy based pan. Add the garlic and tomatoes and cook over a high heat for 5 – 6 minutes. Add the capers and balsamic vinegar (for non-veggies, this is where you'd add whatever else you want to put in like bacon etc., but if you're using prawns they go in at

the last minute or they'll get overcooked and rubbery). Stir to combine and keep warm. ● Rinse the pan, fill it with lightly salted boiling water and bring back to the boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the packet instructions or, for fresh

home-made pasta cook for a little over 3 minutes, until just tender, and drain well. Add the sauce to the spaghetti and toss to combine all the ingredients. ● Serve with crusty Italian ciabatta or focaccia, or a barra of Spanish bread and a glass of red wine.

Because of all the rain this past winter you may have a lot of malas hierbas - weeds so you may need to buy herbicida - weed-killer. However, be careful as there is a law prohibiting the extensive use of weed-killers unless you have taken a special course. The other problem for gardeners tends to be bichos - bugs (insectos - insects) for which you need un espray - spray (also sometimes called a pulverizador but, let's face it, espray is a lot easier to remember). Its effectiveness has never been studied, but if not carried out properly, it can lead to burns.

Avastin - a cheap drug used to treat bowel cancer - should also be prescribed to patients with a condition that leads to sight loss, according to researchers at three eye centres in London, Bristol and Cheltenham. and cheaper than the licensed drug Lucentis, which costs about £10,000 per patient on average. "Dry" AMD is the most common form of the condition, which develops very slowly, causing

gradual loss of central vision. "Wet" AMD, which occurs in about one in 10 patients, can develop quickly and lead to sight loss. Opthalmologists around the world have been injecting tiny

quantities of Avastin into the eyes of patients on an experimental, or "offlabel" basis. They report success at low cost because one course can be split and used for dozens of patients.

HEALTH TIPS

Leave your ears alone Most people don't realise that the ear is a self-cleaning organ and doesn't need any help from either cotton-tipped swabs or “ear candling”. The latter involves putting the cool end of a hollow burning candle in your ear. The heat of the flame and the candle’s placement allegedly create a slight suction that draws wax into the hollow candle. There’s no evidence that it works. All it might do is burn you when the hot wax drips onto your ear or face. The fact is that for most people, the ears require no routine maintenance. Earwax (also called cerumen) is made in the outer part of the ear canal and forms a thin film on the skin lining the canal. Contrary to popular belief, earwax is actually useful. It helps shield the canal from damage by water, infection or trauma. It also traps particles, such as dust, and helps eliminate bacteria that could damage the canal or the delicate eardrum. Earwax is composed of an oily fluid produced by glands in the ear that mixes with sloughed-off skin, bits of hair and other debris. The consistency of earwax ranges from liquid to rockhard, depending on the

amounts of each component and how long the wax has been in the canal. The higher the proportion of dead skin cells and hair, and the longer the mixture has been in the ear canal, the harder the wax. Normally, earwax migrates from inside the canal to the outer ear, and then either washes out or dries up and falls out. Using a cotton-tipped swab to help it along is, in fact, potentially harmful. The swab may push the wax farther into the ear canal, where it can accumulate and harden. Pushing hardened earwax deep into the ear canal can damage the eardrum. Hardened earwax can also cause hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and earaches. In people with hearing aids, hardened earwax can cause the aid to malfunction. If earwax is causing any of these problems, it needs to be removed. There are other reasons why earwax may harden in the ear.

1

Your ear canal may be narrowed because of swelling from an infection or a tiny abnormality in the bone surrounding the canal.

2

Skin conditions such as eczema can cause skin in the ear to flake more than usual, and extra skin makes earwax harder than normal.

3 4 5

Excessive hair in the canal may trap earwax, slowing its normal migration out of the ear.

In some cases, a person’s earwax production simply outpaces the ear’s natural elimination process. As we age, the glands in the ear canal produce a fluid that’s less oily and therefore progresses less easily through the ear canal.

6

Hearing aids and earplugs can also contribute to earwax build-up.

You can treat an earwax blockage yourself at home using an over-the-counter earwax remover; hydrogen peroxide; warmed (not

hot) baby oil or mineral oil, or liquid docusate sodium. But if you have significant ear pain, you should see your doctor first.

= CUPPING: In this technique, heated glass cups are used to create a vacuum that pulls the skin over certain acupuncture points into the cup. “Wet” cupping involves cutting the skin before the cup is placed. It is used to relieve the same problems as listed above. As with moxibustion, there is no well-controlled research on this technique which can lead to burns, pain, bruising, and scars. = GUA SHA:This involves scraping the skin - which is first prepared with oil using an object with a rounded edge, like a coin - to relieve the same problems as those listed above. As with moxibustion and cupping, there is no properly controlled research on this technique, which can cause pain and irritation. It also leaves red scratch marks and in the United States parents who have used it on children have been accused of child abuse. = CHINESE HERB CONCOCTIONS: These are used for virtually every health condition. Because these herbal preparations are typically individualized to the patient and condition, there are few good studies of the use of traditional Chinese herbs. The results of any study of a particular combination cannot be generalized because of this extreme variability. However, according to the experts, they should not be taken by patients on chemotherapy, receiving other cancer treatment or on other prescription medications. They also warn that herb-drug interactions occur, and these can produce important negative effects. Some herbs interfere with coagulation of blood. Herbs and other botanicals may also interfere with the liver’s ability to process chemotherapy, so patients receive perhaps half of the medication required to treat their disease. In addition to medication interactions, which can be fatal, some Chinese herbs are also contaminated with pharmaceutical drugs that have not been subject to scrutiny, some of which are potentially addictive or dangerous. The best Eastern cures, according to the experts, continue to be acupuncture, meditation, massage and Tai Chi – all of which have been studied and have positive effects, when carried out correctly.

Hidden portrait goes under hammer

This week the stars of the Harry Potter movies are flying to Florida for the opening on Friday of Universal´s Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction in Orlando.

Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor may be wheelchair bound and fragile - but her lustrous beauty and violet eyes will live on forever, captured on the silver screen, in photographs and works of art. Now a rare portrait of the legendary star by Andy Warhol is about to be sold at auction after having been hidden from public view for 20 years. The 40" by 39" picture, entitled "Silver Liz", is one of a series of 13 painted by Warhol in 1963 - the year Taylor became the first actress to earn $1 million -

and is being sold by its American owner. It's one of only two paintings by Warhol, who died in 1987, to feature the star's stunning violet eyes. Fans of the star and of Warhol will need to dig deep if they are to succeed in buying the work when it goes under the hammer at

Christie's auction house in London on June 30th. In 2007 actor Hugh Grant sold a painting entitled "Liz" from the same series for £11.4 million at auction - six years after he paid £2 million for it. And this work by the pop art icon is expected to fetch up to £8 million - so potentially a bargain!

But it looks like the boy wizard might be working his magic in the UK too - great news for parents of Harry mad youngsters, who will find a trip along the M25 a bit easier on the pocket. A new "Hogwarts Experience" is to open in the studios in Leavesden, in Hertfordshsire, where the Potter movies are made. It will include the Hogwarts school hall, headmaster Albus Dumbledore's study and other sets, plus replicas of characters and real

costumes. Leavesden studios belong to Warner Bros and the Potter plans are part of an expansion programme Warners currently lease the site but are spending more than £100 million on buying it, expanding it and creating the Potter set tour. British movie technicians have a high reputation and it is hoped that the expanded studio will mean more movies will be shot in the UK, and that up to 2,000 visitors a day will want to

enjoy at first hand the Potter magic. It means Warners would be the only big Hollywood production company owning a base in Europe and enables Leavesden to compete with Pinewood/Shepperton. The final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is being turned into two movies - the first to be released in November and the final instalment next summer.

Internet sales boost expected Inditex, operator of the Zara fashion chain, last week announced a 63 per cent boost to its first quarter profits, helped by strong sales of its

spring and summer clothing range. The retailer, which has more than 4,700 stores in 76 countries, is hoping to maintain momentum and

boost sales further when it begins selling its Zara range online in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the US later this year.

Nigel Mansell crashes out Britain's Nigel Mansell crashed only 17 minutes into his Le Mans 24 Hour race debut in France on Saturday. The ex-Formula 1 champion appeared to suffer a puncture before hitting the barriers after Mulsanne corner. Mansell was taking part in the race with his sons Leo and Greg.

Hamilton shows his class and Unknown gem of knowledge ? leads another McLaren 1-2 car You’re driving a rented car and need fuel - but The enthralling Canadian Grand Prix was one of the best ever as how do you tell which side the petrol cap is on. tyre issues turned it into a cat and mouse race from the first corner. Lewis Hamilton powered his McLaren Mercedes to victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to notch up his second win in a row and his team’s second 1-2 on the trot as Jenson Button finished second in the incident packed race watched by a sellout crowd in Montreal.

for McLaren on the Ile de Notre Dame and the team held all the aces as both Hamilton and Button celebrated on the two top steps of the podium with third placed Alonso beside them while their main rivals Vettel and Webber were fourth and fifth respectively.

Hamilton shouted into his radio as he crossed the line, “Woohooh! Yes! Great job guys! Thank you so much for this weekend. There was a lot of pressure on our shoulders, but we stood up to it.”

Michael Schumacher had a nightmare of a race and the slower he got the more cynical he became. Towards the end of the race Liuzzi was being chopped and blocked by Schumacher as if in a stock car race, finally the Italian muscled his way past the German who was at this stage six seconds off the pace on the green band option tyre.

Starting from pole position Hamilton, who won his first Formula 1 race in Montreal back in 2007, had to work hard for

victory in a race which saw Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel in the lead during various stages of the race. Webber had to drop to seventh place on the starting grid due to a last minute gearbox change.

Hamilton, who now leads the World Championship points table, said afterwards: “It is one of the toughest races so far. It’s another one-two and Jenson did an incredible job. I am very happy and proud of the team.” In the end it was a big day

Fancy a free supercar - it will ‘cost’ just £17 million This ultimate 'buy one, get one free' offer has recently gone on the market attracting attention from billionaires all over the world Fashioned by Gray Design, the Strand Craft 122 concept boasts an Art Deco interior with four double rooms, four large staterooms, a reception, salon and numerous crew cabins. It’s also littered with 52” LED TVs, Bang & Olufsen sound in all rooms and of course, it looks absolutely stunning. Powering this luxury behemoth are twin Rolls Royce engines and with the optional booster, it’s capable of generating over 14,000 horsepower and can break speeds of 50 knots. The accompanying as-yet-unnamed supercar is hand-crafted and uses a

twin turbo V12 engine to generate up to 880 horsepower, achieving a top speed of around 230mph. As the photo above shows, the yacht coordinates beautifully with the car, which even has its own built-in garage. Unfortunately you’ll be paying rather a lot for the ultimate luxury of

ownership and you'd better be quick, because only six are scheduled to be made and rumour has it five of them have already been snapped up.Founder of the Swedish company Strand Craft, Kurt Strand, said they had built the boat and car for the 'very wealthy'. He said: “We have had a lot of interest from all over the world, specifically the Middle East. It was designed for luxury and for people who want the best. “The custom-made supercar is the best feature, both the boat and the car are very high performance and the boat is very fast.”

No idea there was any way of knowing? Maybe you just pull up to the pump and hope you have avoided the embarrassment of getting it wrong. Some people thought that whichever way the pump handle on the fuel gauge pointed was the side that the filler cap could be found, wrong.. the pump handle on the fuel gauge graphic bears no relation to where the petrol cap is located.

But the good news is that many modern cars do have a little-known

indicator on the dashboard - in the form of a small arrowhead on the petrol pump graphic, pointing to which side the cap is on. Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota and Nissan all said their modern vehicles had such an indicator. Indeed even a 9 year old Ford Focus has the little arrow. Vauxhall said all models built in the past two years have an arrow but added that the petrol cap always sits on the driver’s side in their vehicles anyway. Audis and BMWs do not have an indicator as standard, but again say it is always on the driver’s side - except in BMW Minis. Citroen and Peugeot do not have a graphic, and the cap can be found on either side of their cars.

MBE For David Coulthard David Coulthard, the former Formula 1 racing driver, has received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. The 39-year-old from Dumfries won 13 grand prix in a 15-year career in which he scored more points than any British F1 driver in history. Coulthard retired from F1 two years ago but announced in April that he would race for Mercedes in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) this

The Norwegian had already shown in the race that he was back on top form following his return from an Achilles injury. And he underlined that in style on Sunday, getting himself in a 17-man breakaway which went clear 64km into the 148km stage from Allevard les Bains to Sallanches. It was then his attack with 39km remaining which splintered that lead group, with only four other men Arkaitz Durán (Footon), Egor Silin (Katusha), Christophe Le Mével (Française des Jeux) and Ivan Santaromita (Liquigas) - able to stay with him. The decisive moment came on the last of the five 11.5km loops around the destination town of Sallanches, with Boasson

rivals. He had a 27-second cushion when he crossed the line, pointing to the Sky logo on his jersey before raising his arms in triumph. “Despite the conditions I was going down that final descent pretty fast - it's a great feeling and I'm thankful for all the help I've had from the whole team."

England's Lee Westwood received a boost ahead of the US Open, which starts on Thursday, by winning the St Jude Classic after a three-man play-off. The world number three made the most of a final hole meltdown by American Robert Garrigus to clinch his first PGA Tour title in 12 years in Memphis. Garrigus needed only a six on the par-four 18th to win but took seven. Westwood and Swede Robert Karlsson joined Garrigus in a playoff with Westwood winning at the fourth hole. "It's definitely nice to win again," said Westwood, who has finished in the top three in the last three majors. "Golf is a funny game. Sometimes it gives, sometimes it takes away." The 37-year-old

Westwood, who also tied for fourth in the prestigious Players Championship last month, will resume his quest to win a maiden major title when he tees off alongside world number one Tiger Woods in the first two rounds at Pebble Beach. "I like being competitive before a major championship, to be competitive in a tournament and boost my confidence," said

Westwood. "This week was a little bit draining with the temperature it gets to here, but because I've been to Pebble Beach and done most of my preparation I can take it easy for the next three days." Westwood's victory at the TPC Southwind was only his second career win on the PGA Tour and his first since 1998, despite 20 victories on the European Tour.

Beckenbauer blasts England Franz Beckenbauer has accused England of playing "kick and rush" football and believes they are suffering from the lack of domestic players in the Premier League. DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again One of my neighbours invited me this week to join him for a game together with another neighbour and his friend from England. As both of my neighbours have 2 for 1 membership cards we decided to take in the new layout at Marbella Golf and Country Club which has recently re-opened after extensive re-designing. We last played the course over two years ago and were really apprehensive as to how the changes would work out. I am pleased to report that the architects have done a fantastic job and the new design has kept the best of the old holes and added some testing new ones in the middle of the round. The greens were in particularly good condition as were the fairways and although some of the surrounds were a little unkempt it is obvious that the greenkeeping staff are still hard at work to finish off the new layout. We all found scores fairly hard to come by despite the pleasant surroundings although Ian, who invited us, did well with a total of 32 points. This Saturday is the next C.O.G.S. day out and this month is at one of the top courses on the coast, namely Rio Real, which is one of the oldest courses in Spain. This is one of the courses that everybody who comes to our part of the world wants to play so get your name down at Leslies Bar if you have not already done so, and a final reminder to book your places for the summer dinner at El Chaparral by this weekend so as to avoid disappointment. Until next time. Keep your head down Dave.

definitely the mute button as the noise from the vuvuzelas drowns out what atmosphere there is... no chance of hearing some crowd reaction to a piece of footballing skill. Spain hopefully can change all that and get things moving, writes Mick Kerrigan.

However, South Africa 2010 promises to be a different story . Their victory at Euro 2008 ended a 44-year wait for an international trophy and was followed by a World Cup campaign in which they won all 10 of their games, culminating in a 5-2 away victory over their nearest rivals Bosnia-Herzegovina. Spain have won 45 and lost only one of their last 48 games, and they underlined their status as World Cup
