Manhunt - UK News
Armed police close in on gunman A dramatic manhunt for gunman Raoul Moat was continuing last night as The News went to press, with armed police confident that the noose was tightening around their man. Police had sealed off the village of Rothbury, North of Newcastle after a Lexus used by Moat was found abandoned on a nearby industrial estate. As armed
officers swarmed through the village residents were told to stay indoors and children were locked into their schools for much of the day as part of the two
mile exclusion zone around the village. Moat shot dead Chris Brown, the boyfriend of his former girlfriend Samantha Stobbart, and seriously

Colin the Cockroach was discovered living in our microwave last week and we can't work out how he got in there as he is apparently living between the two glass layers of the door. he has so far resisted all manner of sprays and even nuking so we've decided that, rather than being terrified of an anonymous insect, “Colin” doesn't seem so bad (oh yes .. and we haven't been using the microwave for food in the meantime, just in case you were wondering!) The website is getting better and better and we will be uploading all the Classified adverts we have in the printed version of The News as soon as possble. Great inroads are being made to give you even more services in both the website and the paper versions. One thing I would say though is that it seems that the clubs and societies don't want to let everybody know what events, trips, evenings, regular club meetings etc. they're holding so, come on all of you, email me at editorial @thenewsonline.es or call me on 952 454 491 so that we can publicise these for you. We were at a COGS Ladies evening on Saturday night and, yes, the big screen was on with the Spain match. The poor singer didn't stand a chance, as the men – and some of the women – all went nuts for the football. When Spain scored, well, you can just imagine! Let’s hope they manage to get through to the finals or the boys in the office will be hell to live with!

Cuba for talks Armed police close in on gunman on political prisoners Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos arrived in Cuba on Tuesday for a twoday visit to support negotiations between the Catholic Church and the country's communist authorities for the release of political prisoners. Sr Moratinos will discuss human rights with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez and the Archbishop of Havana, Cardinal Jaime Ortega. A source at the Spanish embassy said there were indications the talks could lead to a substantial release of prisoners. According to the unofficial Cuban Human Rights Commission, the number of political prisoners has dropped to 167 – the lowest in 50 years. It said that another 800 people had been detained this year, and then released without charge. It also said that the reduction in prisoners reflected an increase in harassment and intimidation, instead of prison sentences. Sr Moratinos said he had no plans to meet Guillermo Farinas, 48, a prisoner who
has been refusing food since February. He is being fed intravenously in hospital, but doctors say he has developed a blood clot that could kill him. The news was reported in Cuban state media, which usually ignore dissident protests. Sr Farinas is a psychologist who works as a freelance journalist reporting on Cuba in defiance of state media controls. Sr Moratinos said Spanish diplomats had visited Sr Farinas on several occasions and "we've been concerned about his state of health". He told reporters before leaving Spain: "We want him to end the hunger strike because I believe that the whole international community already knows his goal of presenting and representing the situation in Cuba. In February another dissident, Orlando Zapata Tamayo, died while on hunger strike in jail. Cuba denies there are political prisoners on the island, saying jailed dissidents are common criminals or "mercenaries" working for the US.

capital letters and handed to a friend in Newcastle warned that police would "pay for what they've done" to him and his ex-girlfriend. He wrote: "The public need not fear me but the police should as I won't stop till I'm dead." He described himself as a "killer and a maniac but I ain't no coward", and went on: "I guess I've finally lost it."
He later said: “I wish I hadn’t shot Sam. I never cheated on her - I wish she hadn’t on me.” He also warned that the hospital she was being treated in “had better save her, or I’ll hit the hospital hard”.
Moat, from the Fenham area of Newcastle, went on the rampage after being released from Durham Prison on Thursday. It emerged on Monday that police were warned he may have been planning to harm his ex-girlfriend on Friday, the day before he shot Miss Stobbart and killed her new boyfriend, Chris Brown.
In another mystery development yesterday police revealed that two men held hostage by Moat were themselves arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Earlier, in a letter and phone calls to the police Moat had vowed not to stop killing "till I'm dead" and he declared "war" on the police. The former nightclub bouncer blamed Northumbria Police for ruining his life in the 49page handwritten confession sent to the force and published in The Sun.

shop in Blyth, about 10 miles from Newcastle, carried out by a man with a similar description to Moat. Detectives believe the shootings were triggered by a grudge against Mr Brown and Miss Stobbart, which developed into a vendetta against the police. Miss Stobbart has informed police she falsely told Moat she was dating a policeman because she was frightened of him. Before the attacks began Moat's Facebook status was changed to read: "Just got out of jail, I've lost everything, my business, my property and to top it all off my lass has gone off with someone else. Watch and see what happens." His Facebook page was last night shown on Sky News, and said that his “lass” had “gone off” with the policeman who sent him down.

New abortion law faces PP rebellion
Soraya Saénz de Santamaria
No sooner had the new abortion law entered into force on Monday, July 4th, than the Partido Popular asked the Constitutional Court to have it declared unconstitutional. The clause most objected to is the one relating to 16 and 17 year old girls – originally Equality Minister Babiana Aido had wanted them to have abortions without their parents knowledge but she changed it in the face of public outrage. Now minors have to inform their parents of their intention to abort and if the latter object the law will take the side of the
Madrid Metro stands firm The Madrid Metro company has refused to negotiate with the Metro workers' union until it drops threats of future strikes. A five-day strike last week caused chaos in the capital. The strikers had agreed to provide a 50% service but opted for a total strike on Tuesday and Wednesday. In view of the rising level of public anger, the strikers went back to giving 50% service on Thursday and Friday. Service returned to normal over the weekend and after a meeting on Monday, the union announced the next strike would be held from July 13th to 16th, followed by another one from July 20th to 23rd. Last week's strike leader was sacked after he commented that “if we have to kill, we'll kill”. He was replaced by a more moderate union leader.
minor. The law's critics insist that this clause will destroy family life and as a result the regions where the Partido Popular governs have said they will boycott the law. On Tuesday, PP parliamentary spokeswoman Soraya Saénz de Santamaria reminded the rebel regional governments that the law had entered into force and had to be applied. Murcia regional
premier Ramon Luis Valcárcel said it would not be applied in his region until the Constitutional Court hands down its ruling. The most important reform is that women will no longer have the threat of jail hanging over them if they seek an abortion. The law also respects the rights of doctors and nurses to refuse to practice
abortions so that most will be continued to be carried out in private abortion clinics.

Women who seek abortions will be given three days to think over their decision and will receive full information on contraceptive methods. Abortions can only be carried out up to 14 weeks unless the mother's life is in danger or the foetus is
Navarre is the only region in Spain where abortions have never been practised. Women seeking abortions there are automatically referred to other regional health services. Navarra is governed by the PP and is strongly Catholic.

Ceuta and Basques get Melilla join over fear of ETA language fray In what has been described as an“historical minimum”, only 2% of Basques questioned in a recent poll said terrorism was the No 1 worry, with employment and the economic situation heading the list for everyone else. The director of the poll said over 60% felt that it is safer to talk about ETA, violence and politics than ever before. Another 40% said the government's fight
against the ETA terrorist group was more effective than ever before while equal numbers (35%) were both for or against the government renewing
peace talks with the group. More than 70% said they believed ETA had no intention of giving up its arms.
Neo-Nazi group dissolved Madrid's Provincial Court dissolved the neo-Nazi group Blood and Honour on Monday and condemned 14 of its 18 members to jail terms ranging from one to three and a half years. The judges said the group belonged to the skinhead movement, who wore paramilitary uniforms and were “absolutely devoted to Adolf Hitler”. He said the members sold all kinds of neo-Nazi paraphernalia to raise money for the pamphlets and leaflets they distributed at rock concerts and other places where young people got together.
Spain's two North African enclaves are apparently planning to jump on the language merry-go-round, now that Gallego, Basque, Catalan and Valencia can be spoken in Parliament's Upper House, or Senate, in Madrid. The growing Arab communities in each city want their respective languages to be recognised as what are called coofficial languages. In Ceuta, a Moroccan Arabic dialect called dariya is spoken, while the Berber language called tamazig is
spoken in Melilla. Currently not even Arabic graces signs in either city. The leader of the main Moslem party in Ceuta, Mohamed Ali said: “There are signs in Arabic for immigrants arriving in Spain, but none here, not even at the border crossings.” He said tamazig was the main language in North Africa until Islam spread there in the 8th century and even today it is spoken by some 25 million people, mainly in Morocco and Algeria.

footballer will receive in prize money to social causes. This may seem a little like tempting the devil but Paul the German octopus, who has predicted every match winner so far, is backing Spain. A move is afoot in Argentina to turn Paul into a paella.
Rich kids sought adrenalin high Four youths aged 18 to 21 from wealthy families in Madrid who were arrested by the Guardia on Friday said they broke into houses in the capital's wealthier suburbs to get an adrenalin high. They said they carried out the first of 28 break-ins “to see how they would feel”. It gave them such a high that they decided to carry on. They said they usually gave the articles they stole to friends. The Guardia found TVs, computers, expensive watches, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets in the garage of one of them. They are currently in jail awaiting sentence.

Questions too difficult for immigrants
EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News
editorial@thenewsonline.es
To become Spanish you have to know what goes into a Spanish omelette.
The judge at the Getafe Civil Register in Madrid has been criticised by lawyers for asking immigrants “difficult” questions when they apply for Spanish nationality. They said questions about the country's history during the past two centuries and post-Civil War poets would probably be too difficult even for native-born Spaniards to
answer. However, they approved of his questions about sportsmen like Rafael Nadal and basketball star Pau Gasol because sport appeals to a wide range of people.
Another question is about how to make a Spanish omelette, which the lawyers deemed relevant. However, the immigrants have found a way to get round the judge's most
difficult questions. Those who have already been interviewed pass them on – with the answers – to those who come after them.
Franco erased from website The Secretary of State for Communication at the prime minister´s official residence, La Moncloa Palace, will take advantage of the facelift about to be given to the government's website to eliminate Francisco Franco from the list of heads of government which goes back to 1823. Also on the list are the prime ministers who served under the dictator
as well as Miguel Primo de Rivera, known as the Dictator who was in power from 1923 to 1930. The move to remove Franco's name started when a journalist asked Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega about its presence on the website. She said she had no idea it was there and promised to check the site personally.

Rains bring higher fire risk
Former postman turns thief
MADRID. Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba warned on Saturday that the risk of fires this summer is high. He said vegetation was more than usually luxuriant now thanks to an exceptional rainy season but the heat would turn it into generous fodder for fire. There had been fewer fires so far this year but “the worst is yet to come”.
MADRID. The National Police have arrested a retired postman who was using a metal hanger to fish envelopes containing credit cards out of post boxes. He then rang the recipient pretending to be from the issuing bank to obtain the code “to activate it”. Failing that, he then used the card in the Metro ticket machines which do not require it.
Spain to get first gay church
Foreign ministry cuts back
MADRID. A gay church will arrive in October from the United States to become the first one in Spain. The Metropolitan Community Church is a liberal international Protestant Christian denomination with 250 member congregations in 23 countries, and has a specific outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families. It has Official Observer status with the World Council of Churches.
MADRID. Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos will present his plans to restructure his department to the next Cabinet meeting on Friday. Three State departments – Foreign Affairs, European Union and Latin America - will become one “Super State Department to create a Foreign Ministry in line with the Treaty of Lisbon and establish a model for Spanish diplomacy for the 21st century”.

US sanctions fuel row Mehdi Aliyari, secretary of the Iranian Airlines Union, has told Iranian media that Britain, Germany and UAE “have been refusing our planes fuel because of the sanctions imposed by America”. Last week, the US enacted unilateral sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme, to penalise foreign companies trading with Tehran. Britain said it was not aware of any refusal to refuel Iranian planes, and Germany stressed there was no ban. A spokeswoman for the Abu Dhabi Airports Company
(ADAC), which manages the airports in the UAE cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, said the company was continuing to refuel Iranian jets. Oil firms have told reporters they cannot comment on individual contracts. An Iranian lawmaker said Iran would retaliate by doing “the same to ships and planes of those
countries that cause problems for us”. Tehran says its nuclear industry is for peaceful purposes but Western powers fear it is trying to develop a bomb. Last month, the UN Security Council voted to impose a fourth round of sanctions on Tehran for failing to halt its nuclear enrichment programme.
Low turnout blamed on drug gang violence Turnout in the 14 Mexican states where elections were held on Sunday was low, averaging from 30% to 50% as many voters preferred to stay home and not get caught up in drug gang violence. Some 5,000 deaths so far this year have been blamed on drugrelated violence and it has also affected the electoral process. Rodolfo Torre, a
front-runner candidate for governor in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, was killed after gunmen ambushed his convoy on June 28. Four of his aides also died. His brother, Egidio Torre, who replaced him as candidate, was elected governor. A mayoral candidate in Tamaulipas was also killed, while other candidates

He told the Local Government Association's annual conference in Bournemouth that local people should be able to see where their money is being spent. Mr Pickles also asked whether it is right for councils to have separate planning departments, lawyers and communications teams. He called for local authorities to follow the German model of sharing chief executives - a practice a handful of UK councils have already adopted. LGA chairwoman, Dame Margaret Eaton, told councils at the conference to
strip out bureaucracy and red tape and hand power over spending to local people to minimise the effects on front-line services. The LGA, which represents more than 350 councils in England and Wales, called for a "once-ina-generation" programme of change. Dame Margaret said: "I am proposing a

Porn film shot in London hospital A "big budget" porn film, which was shot in a London hospital, generated "substantial income" for the hospital, Tory MP Penny Mordaunt said on Monday. Ms Mordaunt, Portsmouth North MP, was speaking during a House of Commons debate on improving transparency in government accounting. NHS Kensington and
Chelsea said the incident occurred before 2002 when the primary care trust (PCT) formed. Ms Mordaunt said; "When I was director of Kensington and Chelsea Council, I discovered that one of our local hospitals was hiring out one of its closed - but fully-equipped wards - to a film company to use as a film set. To add insult to

Home Office advice to gays under fire
EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News
editorial@thenewsonline.es
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said that under the Home Office's "discretion-test", in use by immigration officials and courts since 2006, gay or lesbian asylum seekers are regularly told to go home and keep their sexuality secret to avoid repercussions. Many are from countries where homosexuality is unacceptable - such as Iran, Cameroon and other African nations. A spokeswoman for the UNHCR's legal office in London said people facing threats because of their sexuality count as a "protected group," alongside those facing religious or political persecution. She said
persecution does not cease to be persecution just because an individual can take avoiding action by being discreet. A Home Office spokesman says the new coalition government was "committed to ending the removal" of gay or lesbian claimants facing "proven risk of imprisonment, torture or execution". The government does not keep
official figures on how many failed or successful asylum seekers claimed on the basis of their sexuality or gender identification. But according to a recent report by the gay lobby group Stonewall, 98% of all gay or lesbian asylum claims are refused in the first instance. In almost all of these cases the "discretion test" was used. In one case, currently
before the UK Supreme Court, a gay man from Cameroon was told he should relocate elsewhere in his country and be "more discreet" in future. The man, only identifiable as "HT", was attacked by an angry mob back home which had seen him and his partner kissing in public. He has been fighting removal from the UK for the past four years.
Australia unveils tough asylum policies Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced new asylum policies on Monday and said negotiations were under way with East Timor on a regional processing centre for asylum-seekers. She also said the suspension of processing
asylum claims from Sri Lankans would end immediately but would continue for Afghans. She said in Sydney that the aim was to "wreck the people-smuggling trade by removing the incentive for boats to leave their port of
origin in the first place; to remove both the profitability of the trade and the danger of the voyage.”Rebutting critics who said she was pandering to the antiimmigration lobby, she said it was wrong to describe
Australians who had concerns about immigration as "rednecks. Opposition leader Tony Abbot launched his policies on the same day. Elections are expected this year and asylum policies are politically contentious.
World Cup made of cocaine
No children please
COLOMBIA. Lab tests have confirmed that a replica World Cup trophy seized by anti-drugs police at Bogota airport is made out of cocaine. The 36cm statue was found in a delivery crate waiting to be sent to an address in Spain. It was made up of 11kg of the drug, mixed with acetone or gasoline to make it easy to mould.
FIRHALL. To live in the recently built town on the outskirts of Nairn in the Highlands, residents must accept certain rules. They must be over 45, and cannot keep ducks, rabbits, pigeons and bees. Only one dog per household is allowed - but no children. Grandchildren and the children of friends can visit and stay, but there are limits on how often.
US ‘abducted’ scientist
Islanders win marine rights
IRAN. The government has handed over new documents to the Swiss embassy, which represents US interests in Iran, proving one of its nuclear scientists was abducted by the US. Shahram Amiri disappeared during a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia a year ago. ABC News reported in March that the scientist had defected and was giving the CIA information about Iran's nuclear weapons programme.
TORRES STRAIT. After a nineyear legal battle, indigenous islanders are celebrating Australia's largest ever marine rights victory. Communities there now own more than 40,000 sq km of sea between the tip of northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea. Ships, fishermen and other businesses will still be able to operate in the waters, but indigenous groups must be consulted about future development.

Fine variations under review
‘Illegal’ political party formed
Motoring fines which differ from area to area for the same offence are under review. Thousands of holidaymakers heading to Andalucia in their cars are unaware of the legal wrangle about the fines they must pay, should they break traffic laws. The fines, unless set in stone, are based on the number of days they would serve in jail for each infraction. But judges are using different yardsticks, so some motorists end up paying as little as €2 or €3 a day instead of serving a
hypothetical sentence while in other areas, the fines are based on €12 a day. In Malaga fines range from €5 to €9 - judges usually take into account the driver’s economic situation. The Prosecutor’s Office of Andalucia in Seville blames it on the Penal Code which sets a minimum of €2 and a maximum of €400. Prosecutors across the region are now pressing for a reform of the pertinent article in the Code which would establish a unitary fine.
The owners of 15,000 “illegal” houses in Chiclana, Sevilla province, have formed their own political party, the Partido Vecinal Regionalista, to fight for the regularisation of their properties via the ballot box in next year’s regional elections. The Junta de Andalucia has ruled that the properties cannot be included in the town’s Urban Plan which means they could eventually be demolished. The party was registered on June 21st at the Ministry of the Interior and a
spokesman said it would “fight from within” the period of time stipulated by the local council for regularising the properties and the costs involved, which the owners do not agree with. The “Platform of People affected by the
Regularisation”, consisting of discontented owners from 44 urbanisations, has been organising protests for months – the last one was held outside the Town Hall on March 20th and was attended by 7,000 people.
Priest forgives attacker An 82-year-old priest who was stabbed in the neck and chest last Thursday morning told reporters on Saturday that he forgave his attacker. After officiating mass, Father Francisco Pineda Nieto returned to his home in Calle Maestranza, Malaga, and after parking his car in the underground garage, was making his way to a nearby kiosk to buy the daily papers – a routine he followed most mornings – when a man leaped out of the shadows and stabbed him once in the neck and twice in the
ribs. Despite his age, Father Pineda was able to knock the knife out of the man’s hand. As his attacker ran away, Father Pineda staggered to the garage entrance and yelled for help. Two women passing by who turned out to be a doctor and a nurse came to his help and called an ambulance. Other passersby grabbed the attacker and held him until the
police arrived. Father Pineda told the police that the man had approached him some 15 days ago, saying he looked after old people and wanted to look after him. The priest contacted the man’s family who told him it was a pack of lies and that the 42year-old only wanted to rob him. The police said later that he had no record but had mental problems.
New low in construction Construction reached a new record low in the first three months of this year, when only 254 apartments were built in the province, according to the College of Architects. The College has approved the construction
of 1,183 apartments during the first six months of this year, a quarter of the number approved for the same period last year. A spokesman said construction levels were now on a par with those in
the 1950s and 1960s, before the construction boom began to take off along the Costa del Sol. He said there were 22,000 unsold new houses and apartments throughout the province.
Looky Looky men hit by ban Marbella's Local Police have banished the looky looky vendors from Puerto Banus, in collaboration with private security companies there. A Town Council spokesman said the layout of the port had made it easy to guard the entrances, with two shifts of 12 men on weekdays, upped to 15 on weekends. He said the area had almost been cleared of prostitutes, something that local business owners have been demanding for years. He said next year's security plans include the installation of cameras in the port, which is visited by more than five million people a year.

Coín burka ban sparks debate Coín town council's decision to ban the burka made the headlines in all the national papers and got a mention on TV news broadcasts. Even Equality Minister Bibiana Aidó had to comment on it. “There'll soon be more municipal bans than burkas”, she said, adding that the people of Coín have more important problems to worry about. She said the debate about the burka is “very complex and must be dealt with tactfully and not used for
political opportunism”. In a statement, Coín council said it was surprised by the minister's remarks and that her position was “clearly contrary to the principles of equality between the sexes”. It also rejected the “Moslem community leaders' lack of respect for democratic decisions which have been appearing in the press”. In

The Junta de Andalucia’s environment councillor, Juan José Díaz Trillo, has opened a 42.6 kilometre long walk along what used to be an old agricultural track dating back to the Moorish occupation. The path has been provided with rest areas and other facilities for walkers. It took two years to restore the track at a cost of one million euros.
ALGECIRAS. More than 20.000 vehicles with an estimated 50,000 Moroccan passengers left the port over the weekend on the ferries for Ceuta and Tangiers. Political tsunami
Lawlessness in the land
I
T
f current political polls prove right, Javier Arenas, the leader of Partido Popular-Andalucia, could turn out to be the worst political tsunami ever to hit the Socialist Party. The polls have been indicating for some time that he will narrow the gap between the two parties in the next regional election, having swiped 10 seats from the Socialists last time around. But the latest polls now give him a majority of one in the Seville Parliament next time around making him the first PP premier of Andalucia since it became an “autonomous community” (decentralised region) in 1981.
U
nlike former Junta de Andalucia premier Manuel Chaves, who was born in Ceuta, and current premier José Antonio Griñán, who was born in Madrid, Arenas saw the light of day in Seville, and you can’t get much more Andalucian than that.
H
e started out his political career in the Union of the Democratic Centre, one of the right of centre parties that eventually evolved into the Partido Popular. He has never strayed far from Seville, having been the city’s deputy mayor from 1983 to 1987. Following the practice of the two main parties, the losing side gets to be the deputy. He was elected to the Junta in 1987 then until he went to Madrid in 1989 as the MP for Sevilla. From 1994 to 2000, he represented the region in the Upper House in Madrid. In addition to leading the PP in the Seville Parliament, he also represents Andalucia for the PP in the Upper House in Madrid. He is a leading moderate on the Christian Democratic wing of the PP.
T
he man Arenas hopes to unseat next year, José Antonio Griñán, has held several positions in the Junta since 1986 – deputy labour minister, deputy health minister – until 2004, when the then premier Manuel Chaves made him Minister of Economy and Finance. Despite this record, he was largely unknown to the general public and he seemed to pop out of the woodwork when he became Manuel Chaves’s successor last year. Admittedly, Chaves had hogged the limelight since he became premier in 1990, to the point that he seemed to be governing Andalucia single-handedly. His detractors always referred to him as the king, with Andalucia being his realm. When he appeared on the “I have a question for you” programme on RTVE a couple of years back, one of the first was from a young man who said: “You’ve been premier ever since I can remember, are you ever going to retire”. He had just been re-elected but there was already talk about the advisability of letting him run again in 2011. As premier, he was pretty ineffective, making wild promises (a computer for every schoolchild, nearly a million council houses) which he never made good on. And his relatives – he has 10 brothers and sisters – kept popping up in the headlines, in scandals related to juicy contracts with the Junta.
he Popular Party is once again showing us that it doesn’t respect law and order when it comes to disagreeing with the Socialists. The latest chapter in the PP’s open defiance centres on the new abortion law that went into effect on Monday. Mariano Rajoy, the opposition leader, has decided to allow the leaders in regions governed by the PP to openly object to implementing the new regulations that concern the termination of early pregnancies.
Javier Arenas
T
he last (known) scandal involved one of his daughters, who was the legal representative of a company in Huelva which obtained a €10 million subsidy from the Junta at the end of 2008. The scandal hit the headlines in January last year and in April, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero whisked him away to Madrid and gave him the newly created post of the third deputy prime minister in charge of liaising with the regional governments. This upset a lot of people in Madrid – who needs another deputy prime minister when we already have two?
I
n Andalucia, sly tongues whispered that Chaves was whisked away before he could do the Socialists any more harm. He lost ten seats to the PP and had to form an alliance with Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) to make sure he could stay in government, having enjoyed healthy majorities since he was first elected in 1990.
H
owever, those majorities had been steadily dwindling as more and more people grew tired of a man who seemed to do nothing but live the good life, leaving the actual business of governing to his sidekicks. I know of several Socialists who voted for Arenas the last time around in an attempt to get rid of Chaves.
G
riñán recently pooh-poohed opinion polls that show the PP winning next year - “things can change a lot before then”, he said. He has also gone on record as saying that he knows Andalucians want change “but that change can come from within the Socialist Party”. After 29 years of Socialist rule Andalucia still comes second from last in education, health care and council (VPO) housing. Only Socialist-governed Extremadura performs more poorly than Andalucia in these areas.
O
lder people still remember the bad old days when the gap between rich and poor in the region was enormous, making it a hot bed of revolution, a crucible for any progressive political idea that raised its head elsewhere. But those days are past.
F
or once, I'm really looking forward to the next regional election because I suspect it won't be “more of the same”.
T
he government has lifted the three restrictions that before this week made it possible for women to get an abortion – when the mother’s health is in jeopardy, foetus malformation, and cases of rape. Now under the rules, women are free to undergo the procedure up to their 14th week of pregnancy. Between the 15th and 22nd week, abortions would only be performed if doctors determine that the mother’s life is in danger. From then on, pregnancies would be terminated if the foetus is severely malformed. Girls aged 16 and 17 will be able to get an abortion without their parents’ or guardians’ consent but they would have to be informed. Abortion is now a woman’s guaranteed right.
B
ut the law is much more than setting down a set of rules; it also calls for the education, prevention and awareness of unwanted pregnancies in Spain , which in 2008 rose to 115,812 – a 3.2% hike from the previous year. The government hopes the new law, combined with an educational campaign managed by the regional governments, will curtail the number of unwanted pregnancies. But the PP and other conservative groups prefer that we all be transported in a time machine back to the Victorian period when sex was hardly discussed even in whispers. They don’t like the idea of sex education in the classrooms, saying instead that parents should be the ones who teach their children.
S
o now the rebellion has been ignited. Murcia’s PP regional premier Ramón Luis Válcarcel fired the first shot by announcing on Monday that there “are no reasons” to obey the new law because “we haven’t reached the end point.” Galicia , another PP stronghold, said it won’t give out any information to women as to the types of government assistance they are entitled to help them before and in the aftermath of an abortion, as per the new rules state. But it is not only the PP. The holier-than-thou Navarre region, governed in a coalition by the Socialists and Navarre UPN nationalists party and where no abortions are performed even though Spain legalised the medical procedure 25 years ago, have filed a case with the Constitutional Court to prevent the new law from being applied there. The last time I checked, all of these revolting regions were still part of Spain and had to follow the laws of the land. It is amazing that, with the exception of some quirky places like Belgium and second or third world nations, there are still areas of a European nation which refused to do what their government says and appear to get away with.
N
ow the PP wants the Constitutional Court to issue an injunction as the judges weigh in the abortion law but it appears this will not occur. The PP has filed a lawsuit along with other conservative groups, but the party has handed down its own judicial ruling telling its followers to stand defiant against what had been approved by the majority in Congress. The Equality Ministry cautions that it can sanction regions that refuse to apply the law. But stronger methods are needed: the government should and must prosecute those who don’t follow the new abortion law and try to keep women from attaining their guaranteed rights. All of this defiance doesn’t help. The PP and its fellow plaintiffs in the abortion law case need to let the courts decide what is constitutional and what is not, and stop thumbing its nose at the Socialist government by invoking a dangerous precedent to encourage others to break the law.

Kelly Thirlwell CHAIN President Dear Friends Colleagues,
and
As some of you are aware, my family and I have been considering our longer term options for some time. We have finally decided to move back to the UK with effect from August 2010. This has been a difficult decision for us as we have very much fallen in love with our adopted country and have made some fantastic friends during our 8 years here. I will miss working with the animals and those associated with all animal causes. This has been one of the most rewarding challenges of my career and one where I feel I have been able to make a significant contribution. However I think it is also fair to say that it has taken over my life to a degree where I feel I can no longer put my family first without facing personal abuse from certain people. This has contributed to my final decision to leave. I feel it is important to make this point as those who are left here to deal with the day to day issues of animal abuse and abandonment need to be supported by the whole community. Without
volunteers who are prepared to work hands on with the animals there would be more horrific examples of cruelty and suffering. They need to receive our gratitude rather than feeling that they are being taking advantage of. On a positive note, I have already talked to my closest working colleagues and I propose to continue to support CHAIN in 2 ways: 1) To link up with Tania Coates from SOS and others in the UK to raise the profile of our work with animals and to provide a re-homing service 2) To visit the area on a regular basis to support the NUTS programme (Neutering Under The Sun) and continue CHAIN’s ambitious neutering programme in partnership with Wayne Hockenhull and our vet students. To help organise this we are looking at an electronic booking system that can be made available on the new CHAIN web site (kindly provided by Tim of In Malaga Today) It leaves me to wish everyone at CHAIN and those associated in any way with animal welfare work the very best of luck. might be out of sight but you will not be out of mind as I am determined to make this move a way of expanding our support and finding new ways to help abused and neglected animals. Editor says: This is a real shame. Kelly is one of the nicest people I have met and she will be missed by not only myself and her colleagues, but more than ever by all the animals she has helped over her time with the animal charities. What people seem to be unable to grasp is that although there is a crisis on, your animals are your responsibility. All the charities will help wherever and whenever they can but, the increasing number of (mostly British) people that direct abuse at the volunteers when told the refuges are full and can’t take any more animals is getting ridiculous. The volunteers are exactly that. They do not get paid to put up with abuse so, in future people, please think in advance when things are getting tough and make sure you can either take your pets back to the UK or find them a home yourselves before you have to leave.

The Summer Triangle Throughout the whole of the night sky there are only 88 recognised constellations, groups of stars that can be joined in a dot-to-dot fashion to form a picture of sorts. About half of these are in the southern hemisphere so cannot be seen from here and the others are seasonal constellations that can only be seen at certain times of the year. So at any one time there are only about 12 constellations visible. Some, like the Plough and Orion, are instantly recognisable whilst others are very difficult to make out and look nothing at all like what they are supposed to represent. Some are very low down on the horizon and are lost in the light pollution from towns and cities and some are directly overhead and clearly visible. At this time of year there are three constellations that are directly overhead but are not that easy to make out. Cygnus the swan, Lyra the harp and Aquila the eagle were originally described by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 1st century AD. But it took our very own Sir Patrick Moore in 1950 to point out that these three inconspicuous constellations actually contain three of the brightest stars in the sky and form a perfect triangle in the sky. And he coined the phrase ‘The Summer Triangle’. If you go outside at this time of year on a dark clear night and look straight above you, you will easily see these three bright stars. The brightest of the three, Deneb, marks the tail of the swan. Altair is in the
eagle and Vega is a dazzling bluey white coloured star in Lyra. Now although these three stars may look more or less the same brightness they are far from being so in real life. They are at vastly different distances from us. Altair is 16 light years away from us, Vega is 25 light years but Deneb is an incredible 1550 light years away! Altair is a star 10 times bigger than our Sun, Vega is 52 times bigger and Deneb is over 70,000 times bigger than our Sun. If you were to bring Deneb here and put it where our Sun is then the orbit of the Earth, Venus and Mercury would all lie inside this huge star.
Astronomy on the Mountain We have started our Astronomy on the mountain sessions again this year. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
starting at 10.00pm until 11.30pm you can ride the cable car from Tivoli World 2500ft up to the top of Benalmadena Mountain. There you will find us with giant telescopes and high powered laser beams showing you the night sky. But remember to bring a light jacket with you as it can sometimes get very cold up there after the sun has gone down. Next Monday July 12th we even have a guest appearance from the International Space Station, look to the North west at 23.07 and you will see it as it passes directly overhead at 17,000 mph. If you join us on the mountain to see it then not only will you get to wave at the astronauts you should be able to shake hands with them as they pass. RBL breaks Following the final meeting before the summer break, members of Benalmadena Branch enjoyed lunch at the Honeypot Inn. Meetings are held every Monday, 10.30 for 11.00 a.m. at The Blazing Saddles, Avenida Bonanza, and will recommence on September 6th.
Sarah and Kenny Spencer, the organisers of the Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser on Saturday June 26th were delighted that so many people went along on the evening to support this event and would like to extend a huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who supported, donated and dug deep into their pockets to help this very worthy cause. The evening kicked off with music from local rock band Coin Box, followed by Spanish band Plaza Azul with their Celtic soul sound and a couple of fantastic bop-to sets from The Sand Dancers. In between live music sets Brian, from Energy FM, was on hand to keep the atmosphere going. To boost funds further there was a grand raffle and also a live auction. The
first auction item was a signed and authenticated football from Manchester United which on its own raised a wonderful €150.
Half way through the evening a BBQ and buffet which was donated by many local businesses was enjoyed by all. Kenny Spencer, after receiving pledges from the pupils of St Anthony’s College, Mijas where he teaches, suffered a head shave and John Tedford literally gave blood when he endured a back wax. Becky Baker gave a powerful performance when she joined Coin Box to sing a few solo songs plus ‘Proud Mary’ with the whole band, and closed proceedings with a beautifully haunting performance of a song written by a fellow CF
sufferer called ‘I Can’t Breathe’. In the fortnight leading up to the evening do, St Anthony’s College bought raffle tickets, event tickets and 9 girls from the Juniors held a skateathon, roller blading around the tennis courts for half an hour which in itself raised over €500. On another afternoon the pupils paid a euro each to see a concert given by Geoff Knibbs and Kenny Spencer more popularly known as the duo Mutt ‘n’ Geoff. So, in all, the grand total from all of these events, including the evening at Venta Los Arcos. was a whopping €3,060 which is being shared between the UK and Spanish Cystic Fibrosis charities. Once again a big thank you to all those who took part.

Cruising to success as Adventure comes to Malaga WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean

he city of Malaga is no longer merely a gateway to the Costas for holiday makers - and a new arrival at the city's ever-expanding port will help Malaga continue to consolidate its position as a top place to visit as well as boosting the city's economy as thousands more visitors head its way. ourist and town hall chiefs are busy creating a Malaga worthy to contest the crown for European Capital of Culture in 2016 and a key part of their programme is to make the city one of the most popular ports servicing the hugely lucrative cruise market. As the second largest port in Spain, with an atmospheric old town plus its hinterland of Nerja, Mijas and Granada, city chiefs have worked hard over the past four years building up its reputation.

Her 138,000 tons is home to 3,114 guests and she and her Royal Caribbean sisters helped revolutionise the cruise industry by bringing ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls and inline skating rinks to the high seas in a determined bid to provide something for the whole family through three generations. Cruising is no longer just for the well-off - it’s affordable, and easy now to take the kids. Special clubs cater for them, giving mum, dad and grandparents time to take a break and when you consider the price covers not just your accommodation but the capacity to eat what you want when you want, more or less 24 hours a day, and top class entertainment, it begins to make economic sense.

ABOUT
Up above the Last of the Summer Trumpets clouds so high at El Potro Fancy something to do that is completely different? Why not try “Astronomy on the Mountain”. For the past couple of years Ken Campbell, who writes our Stargazing column, has been showing people what to look for in the heavens. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 10.00pm until 11.30pm you can ride the cable car from Tivoli World 2500ft up to the top of Benalmadena Mountain where you will find him with giant telescopes and high powered laser beams showing you the night sky. But remember to bring a light jacket with you as it can sometimes get very
cold up there after the sun has gone down. Next Monday July 12th they even have a guest appearance from the International Space Station, look to the North west at 23.07 and you will see it as it passes directly overhead at 17,000 mph. If you join them on the mountain to see it, you’ll get to wave at the astronauts as they pass.
The 2010 FIFA world cup final is almost upon us, England is out but the big decider is yet come. Footie fans will be delighted to hear that the El Potro Bar and Restaurant will have shot by shot live match coverage on both their giant TV screens on Sunday July 11th. Also, broadcasting live on 96.5 fm and directly from the premises from 6.00 to 8.30 pm is Global Radio sports guru Alan G. Alan along with radio presenters “Honest” Dave, and “Cockney” Larry hosts a pre-match radio show with interviews and informed commentary, chit chat, good music and of course special guests.
Matthew and the El Potro chefs will make sure the full and traditional Sunday Carvery is right on the ball so all you’ll have to do is eat, drink and be merry while you wait for the kick off. At only € 12.00 a head for all you can eat with kids under six years eating for half price this is the easy “football” Sunday for the modern man and his family. The following Saturday, Johnny G is alive and well and back on stage with his tribute show to rock and roll star Elvis Presley and those other great musical Legends of Las Vegas. Complete with costume and all the right moves,

La Parra - a little Music and taste of Grimsby philosophy in Ronda
For true British style fish and chips you will not go wrong at La Parra in Los Boliches. Graham and the team serve up top quality traditional fish and chips to eat in or take-away, good enough to draw customers from far and wide. It’s the tasty airconditioned, chip-shop hot spot that serves really cool fish, chips and peas from €4.95. Coming through Grimsby all the fish is carefully controlled fish stock from the coldest of those deep and icy wild Icelandic waters you see on the tell - cod, haddock or plaice with real chips and freshly steeped mushy peas. It’s a winner for dinner and very enjoyable too, especially with a nice pot of tea or a glass of wine. Whitby scampi and a speciality range of other non-fish dishes are also on
the menu, as are meals for children. For a real treat, a La Parra extra jumbo portion of cod or haddock goes up to a whopping 14 oz but if you don’t enjoy the best of British fish and chips, then tuck into a home made pie with salad instead.
The Malaga-born baritone and National Music Award Winner Carlos Álvarez, the soprano and conductor Pilar Jurado, African band Aba Taano and the sound artist and radio producer José Iges are just some of the names taking part in the 2010 Semana de la Música in Ronda , which finishes on Friday. In collaboration with the Fundación General de la Universidad de Málaga (FGUMA), the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda (Royal School of Cavalry in Ronda) celebrates the eleventh edition of their Encuentro
Músic y Filosofía (Music and Philosophy Meeting) and Semana de la Música (Week of Music) with a programme brimming with conferences and concerts related to this year's theme; "Music and Representation". Opera, chamber music, African chanting and radio performance will share the stage as a variety of special guests perform the best of their repertoire throughout the week. All concerts and conferences will take place at the Royal School of Cavalry in Ronda which celebrates its 225th anniversary this year.

Eclipse BY DAVID SLADE Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson The Twihards will be heading to the cinemas in droves for the third in the teenage girl-vampirewerewolf love story trilogy which is released just seven months after the last offering, New Moon. Heartthrob Pattinson returns as vampire Edward
Cullen and Stewart is Bella Swan, the girl who wants to marry him despite some blood sucking issues. Werewolf Jacob is still hopelessly in love with Bella, who thinks of him as just a friend. So far, so teenage magazine romance. But now Seattle is under threat from
an advancing vampire horde seeking revenge and the Cullens and Jacob’s werewolves must form an uneasy alliance if they are to beat off the common enemy. The stars shine and the movie will be the summer pleasure that all Twihard fans are expecting it to be.

unveiled the new Peter Parker. He is 26 year old little-known British actor Andrew Garfield (Lions for Lambs and TV series Red Riding and Boy A).
But last week the studio announced it is going ahead with an origins story and
Sony were delighted with his screen test and the movie is slated for release in July 2012.
Sweeney remake? "Get your trousers on, you're nicked" - and with those words the Sweeney's hard nuts Jack Reagan and George Carter would haul off another bad guy in the iconic 70s TV series starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman. Now, according to rumours last week, the show is to get a Hollywood makeover a la The A Team. It has been claimed that Ray Winstone has signed
up as Reagan although the tough guy actor was quoted earlier in the year as saying that he had seen a great script for the proposed film but money was the problem which would stop it getting the green light. Well, we will see. Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom and Tom Hardy have all been mentioned as possibles for the Carter role.
O
ne of my favourite directors is Vincenzo Natali , one of the most underrated directors of all time. Unlike Cameron or Stone, who turn out movies like they are going out of style, Natali is more like Tarantino, quality not quantity. When you watch a Natali movie, you know it’s going to be original and different with plenty of twists and turns. I love the way he never uses full Technicolor, and always leaves you on the edge of seat. When it comes to scifi, horror or thriller, Natali is your man.
I
n 1997 we were treated to “Cube” an original, suspenseful, frightening movie. The idea and execution of this film was so simple, yet it's still a very complex and brilliant piece of work. The story is frightfully plausible, intriguing and clever. The most amazing thing is that it was such a low budget project that they only built one cube and made it appear as though they made several. The basic plot of “Cube” is about six people, each from a very different walk of life, who awaken to find themselves inside a giant cube with thousands of possible rooms. Each has a skill that becomes clear when they must band together to get out: a cop, a math whiz, an architect, a doctor, an escape artist and an autistic man. Each plays a part in their thrilling quest to find answers as to why they've been imprisoned. One of the most underrated sci-fi/horror movies ever.

wasn’t a boring moment and the further into the story, the more amazing the finale became. The story is of Morgan Sullivan, who applies for a job with a high-flying techno-company called Digicorp. His job is to be a spy and gain information about a rival company, while under an assumed and false identity. His home-life is perfectly normal but he has to lie to his wife about what he's actually doing. However, things start to take a conspiratory turn and before he knows what's going on, he starts to question who he actually is. This is not helped by the introduction of a strange woman.

hich brings us to the present day and straight in to our cinemas with “Splice”, (pictured above) and while it has received both good and bad reviews, I think it is original, thought-provoking and quite simply one of the most disturbing movies ever made. This movie is fascinating and character-driven with moral dilemmas and enough surprises that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. Clive and Elsa are genetic engineers specialising in splicing together DNA from different animals, to create fantastical new hybrids. They want to use human DNA in a new hybrid which could yield astronomical medical benefits; however the pharmaceutical company that funds their research is more interested in exploiting their earlier triumphs. This leads Clive and Elsa to secretly conduct their own experiment. The result is Dren: an amazing creature who exhibits an array of unexpected developments, both physical and intellectual. Dren exceeds their wildest dreams and, ultimately, their most terrifying nightmares.

Freedom is calling you, there are people to see, places to go and lots to do and yet you long to spread your wings and fly like a butterfly without any cares or worries if only for one day. Some things in your life are shouting out for you to let them go and other areas are asking you to embrace new people and the opportunities that are presented. Communication problems may get in the way towards the weekend due to another person’s confusion as to how they really feel. There are pleasurable times ahead and your financial future looks promising. Your energy levels are high at the moment and there appears to be no obstacles or problem that you cannot side-step or maneuver your way around. It is difficult for others to say “no” to you now. The more original you can be the more impact you will have on your immediate surroundings. Your wellconnectedness brings you into contact with those in positions of authority who make a great impact on your life. It is like someone has turned the light on and you can once again see exactly what needs to be done for you to gain better control over your situation. You have the ability to turn chaotic events totally round. The main question you need to ask yourself is what in your life are you tired of and what really needs to change? Once you can answer these questions without doubt or cynicism, illumination will light the way towards greater surety. Dare to dream. Personal relationships are highlighted and someone is encouraging you to live life in the moment and focus upon the present instead of sitting back and waiting for things to happen. There needs to be a balance in your life for anything to work and function smoothly, however, one scene needs to be played out and run its course, before you can really comprehend and absorb the full implications of a decision. Miracles do happen but when you least expect them.
Could things get any better? Well, they could if you were absolutely certain of an outcome, but life is full of uncertainties, and in one area of your life in particular there is a lot at stake. Right now it is all about having the courage to follow your heart and in doing so you will earn the respect and admiration of those around you. Encourage yourself to take a relaxed stand and rise up rd September 23 - to the next platform, think how light you will feel once you release that heavy nd October 22 load you have been carrying.

It is not about what happens to you but how you choose to deal with it that is important. Relying on the opinions of others will only lead to indecision, it is imperative that you follow your own path to happiness. Things will start to work out pretty well for you as long as you have the courage to listen to yourself and allow others to do the same. A relationship issue may require some distance so that you can gain some clarity over the greater picture. There is a need to be awake and alert over the results of some of your actions. Everything has a cause and a resulting effect and you are facing the effects of something that was put into motion a while back. Resist the temptation to blow things out of proportion and do not allow pride or a hurt ego to get in the way. Your imagination and creativity is at an all time high and this energy is urging you to be expressive and transform your surroundings.
● Toss the salmon, onion, pepper, tomatoes and pickles together with a fork. ● Add the lemon or lime juice, season with salt and
pepper, add more of whatever needs adding and then moisten with olive oil or mayonnaise. (Snipped chives, sliced basil or a little crushed fresh thyme can also be
added if you have them and fancy adding something more.) ● Spoon the salmon onto the bread. Serve with a simple salad. ADVERTISING FEATURE

Blas Infante, which is the upper bypass for Alhaurin el Grande - it is the only butchers in Alhaurin where you can purchase traditional English cuts of meat. Having endured the recession and the closure of the road from Los Morenos to Alhaurin el Grande, owner Chrissy knows just how important it is to give good value for money and excellent service. For example, try one of her special barbecue packs which at €20 is unbelievable value and consists of a bumper selection : 1kg sausages, 1kg pork chops, 1kg chicken legs, 1kg pork kebabs, and 6 burgers. More and more former customers are beginning to return to Ana’s for their meat and deli products as word is quickly spreading that, due to recent staff changes, there is a new friendly and open
approach - unlike the previous offhand attitude that upset so many people. Chrissy, who is wellrespected in the community, understands how important it is to cater for the individual needs of every customer and the deli side is now offering sandwiches freshly made to order. Carniceria Ana’s is beyond doubt the best butcher’s shop in the area and anybody not shopping
there doesn’t know what they are missing. So, for the best cuts of meat and the most competitive prices in town, come and have a look at the quality and excellent value at Carniceria Ana’s at Avda Blas Infante, Alhaurin el Grande, and sample the traditional cuts of English meat whilst enjoying part of the real Spain. Bad time for diabetics
Staying hydrated in summer heat
Summer can be uncomfortable for anyone but for people with diabetes, the heat and humidity can be particularly hazardous. One of the complications of diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, is an impaired ability to adjust to rises in temperature, which can cause dangerous increases in body temperature during the summer. The underlying problem, nerve damage, occurs in 60% to 70% of people with diabetes; it can affect nearly every organ in the body, including sweat
glands. When nerve damage keeps the sweat glands from working properly, the body fails to cool down as the mercury rises. In one small study, scientists compared diabetic patients and a group of healthy control subjects as they were exposed to increasing temperatures. The subjects were hooked up to devices that measured skin
temperature, core temperature and sweat rates. As temperatures rose, the control subjects’ perspiration rates increased proportionately; their core temperatures stayed constant. The scientists reported: “For subjects with diabetes, sweat seemed to plateau irrespective of an alarming rise in core temperature. The diabetic subjects’
generalized inability to sweat across the body had a profound effect on core temperature.” Research by the Mayo Clinic in Arizona shows that diabetic patients have higher rates of hospitalizations, dehydration and death in the heat. Yet a survey by the clinic found that many were unaware of the greater risk and the need for special precautions.
NEWS
Demand for unproved M.S. treatment Doctors in the United States are reporting an increasing demand for a treatment for multiple sclerosis developed by an Italian doctor who believes that the disease, which damages the nervous system, may be caused by narrowed veins in the neck and chest that block the drainage of blood from the brain. Dr Zamboni claims that opening those veins with the kind of balloons used to treat blocked heart arteries - an experimental treatment he calls the “liberation procedure” can relieve symptoms. This is a radical departure from the conventional belief that multiple sclerosis is caused by a malfunctioning immune system and inflammation. Despite the lack of proof, many patients want to believe that multiple sclerosis might turn out to be a vascular disease which can fixed with a relatively simply procedure, and they want to be tested and treated - now. They say they cannot afford to wait for research results because they will wind up in wheelchairs before the studies are done. Their only option so far has been a lifelong course of drugs
with limited benefits and harsh side effects. To some, balloon treatment seems no riskier than those drugs. Dr. Zamboni himself has said that the procedure should not yet be done outside of studies. He said in an interview that he was conducting research only and had turned down thousands of requests from people wanting to go to his clinic at the University of Ferrara. The controversy has exposed the deep frustration of many people with this incurable, disabling disease, who feel that research has let them down. About 2.1 million people worldwide have multiple sclerosis. It is more common in temperate zones than in the tropics, and affects more women than men and more Caucasians than members of other groups. It usually begins in young adults, with fatigue, vision problems, numbness,
bladder trouble and difficulty with walking, balance and coordination. The disease eats away a fatty substance, myelin, that coats nerves, and gradually scars the nerves. The damage is thought to occur because the immune
system, for unknown reasons, mistakenly attacks myelin. Dr. Zamboni, 53, began studying the medical literature on multiple sclerosis in 1995 when his wife learned she had the disease.
This is the time to take a beverage inventory: what you drink, how much and how to maintain a reasonable intake of fluids that will supply your body with much-needed water without adding to your fat stores. It is also the time to remember that many of the cold liquids you quaff when thirsty are loaded with sweet calories that actually increase the body’s need for water. Another fact is that no matter what the season, people probably don’t drink enough fluid to fulfil their body’s requirements. To calculate how much water you need each day, multiply your weight in pounds by 0.08; the result is your requirement in eight-ounce cups. Before those who weigh 200 pounds panic about having to drink 16 cups of liquid a day, keep in mind that about half the fluid people need comes from fruits, vegetables and other solid foods. The effects of dehydration can be subtle, with an array of confusing symptoms that can leave people feeling fatigued, irritable and unproductive, often with side orders of headache and muscle cramps. For the elderly, who often restrict their liquid intake for fear of having to get to a bathroom quickly, dehydration is commonplace and can be downright dangerous – it is one of the most common causes of hospitalization for people over 65. Alcohol definitely increases the body’s water need and cannot be included in your liquid intake unless the drinks are prepared with plenty of unsweetened non-alcoholic mixers. Bottled water is vastly overrated. By sticking with plain, old water from the tap (filtered at home if need be), you can reduce the dependence on oil - plastic water bottles are petroleum-based - and the pressure on landfills. And don’t forget that plain old ordinary tea is one of the most effective rehydrating drinks.

Posh to spice up Range Rover While David Beckham was helping to console his England colleagues after their hapless crash out of the World Cup wife Victoria was keeping her foot firmly on the accelerator pedal as she steered into a new career development. The former Spice Girl and mother of three has been appointed creative design executive at Range Rover and she has said she is "very excited" by her new role. She was unveiled as the company's face of fashion at Range Rover's 40th birthday celebrations in London last week. The company showed off a smaller, sleeker model called the Range Rover Evoque and Posh, who will work on the interior design for a special
edition of the car, said the vehicle was "absolutely stunning". The Evoque will be on sale from next summer and the good news is that it will create around 1,000 new jobs at the company's Halewood plant on Merseyside.
Rover's design director Gerry McGovern said:" She knows a lot about fashion and a lot about trends, a lot about luxury products." He said she would add a new dimension as the company designed products to appeal to a wider audience.
Fashion designer Victoria told a celebrity crowd at the party that she admired the effortless style, quality and beauty of the car and that she was honoured to be part of the creative team. Range
Well, the Range Rover sits in the garages of any number of top Premiership players - so maybe Posh, who certainly does know a lot about luxury products, will bring a bit more bling to grab the WAGs market.
Gospel Tom in new direction row
Singer Tom Jones is used to having ladies' underwear hurled at him - but now a senior exec at his new record company is hurling criticism in the star's direction.
Jones was signed by Island Records for £1.5 million last October and has decided that at 70 he needs to head in a new musical direction....leaving behind raunchy tunes like Sex Bomb and Mama Told Me Not to Come. His new album, "Praise and Blame" is full of blues and gospel songs. But Island Records
Vice-President David Sharpe thought it was a "sick joke" and songs like Lord Help The Poor and Needy, If I Give My Soul and Burning Hell aren’t upbeat tracks designed to shift albums. He said if it wasn’t pulled he wanted his money back. Sir Tom has reinvented himself for younger
audiences at festivals like Glastonbury and will air tracks from the new album when he appears in Suffolk on July 15th. The album is out on July 26th. An unrepentant Mr Sharpe has said he "paid for a Mercedes" and ended up with a "hearse". So now it's up to the singer's fans to prove him wrong.
Silence not golden Love 'em or hate 'em - one thing is for sure, the vuvuzela has made a lasting impact on this year's World Cup and may yet prove next season´s weapon of choice at football grounds around the world. Normally they
are made of plastic and cost coppers. But a mystery Russian has splashed out a mere £14,000 on a gold and diamond encrusted vuvezela which he will give to a South African business partner in time for Sunday's
final. The luxury model has been produced for the unnamed Russian by an Austrian goldsmith. Apparently it is just as loud as the cheap and cheerful version.

Hamilton ends rift with Alonso Lewis Hamilton insists he and Formula 1 rival Fernando Alonso are "cool", despite a public row in the wake of the European Grand Prix. Hamilton said he and Ferrari driver Alonso had messaged each other since the race to clear the air. Alonso had accused Hamilton of disrespect after the McLaren driver overtook the safety car in Valencia.

A three-man battle between Lorenzo, Pedrosa's Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso and Ducati's Casey Stoner then
rider to use the harder rear tyre option and the LCR Honda pilot recovered from a poor start with a clever line through turns one and two, before claiming his best result of the season with fourth place. Stoner's team-mate Nicky Hayden just got the better of injured Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri for eighth. Melandri's rookie teammate Marco Simoncelli crashed out of sixth just after the halfway point.

developed up front – until Stoner also missed his braking point for turn one, at the start of lap six. That left the Australian just behind the recovering Pedrosa - now up to third - and front row starter Randy de Puniet, while Lorenzo and Dovizioso pulled away. Dovizioso put up an excellent resistance to stick to Lorenzo's rear wheel, until he slid off out at the end of the back straight on lap 15 of 25.That put Lorenzo almost six seconds clear of a Pedrosa/Stoner battle for second and third, and the Fiat Yamaha rider romped to his fifth win of the season by 4.754sec – although his lead reached seven seconds. Having been denied home victory at the very last turn by team-mate Valentino Rossi one year ago, it was a particularly special victory for Lorenzo - and his tenth as a MotoGP rider. Pedrosa kept Stoner in his wheeltracks for second position, but is now a huge 52 points behind the #99 in the world championship. Stoner said he simply didn't have the acceleration to overtake Pedrosa's Honda. Randy De Puniet was the top

into the braking zone at the start of lap two, and was issued with a penalty on lap 7, by which time he held a 1.3sec lead. But the penalty was a 'go back one position' verdict, which proved impossible to communicate to Iannone - his Fimmco Speedup team even trying to write it on the pit board with pen and paper! Iannone didn't understand the message and kept riding - resulting in a ride-through penalty being issued on lap 14 of 23. The Italian understood that decision and rejoined the field outside of the points (eventually riding to 13th) while Takahashi was handed a three-second lead over Thomas Luthi and Julian Simon. Part-time 2009 MotoGP rider Takahashi - who has qualified on the Moto2 front row three times this season, but was without a podium finish - then extended his advantage to hand Herve Poncharal's team a landmark victory by just over five seconds. Takahashi is the fifth different winner from the seven races, while Tech 3 is the fourth different manufacturer to claim a race win after Suter, Moriwaki and FTR. The victory was the first for Tech 3 since 2000, in the 250cc class.

Yuki Takahashi has given Tech 3 its first ever Moto2 victory after a dramatic seventh round at Catalunya, which began with a ninerider pile-up at turn one and ended with a huge crash for Carmelo Morales. The turn one accident, triggered by Alex Debon missing his braking point and spearing into the side of Mike di Meglio at the apex, resulted in yellow flags being waved for several laps - which proved to be pole sitter Andrea Iannone's downfall. The Italian, seeking his third victory of the season, overtook Takahashi heading

understand that a car auction is a bargain place not a give-away place, a place to make a good deal but not at any price either. Some people are coming to the auction thinking that they can buy a 10.000 car for 2.500 . This is NOT the case and will never be. Cars are owned by legitimate persons who have decided to sell their car at a very fair price and below market value. NOBODY is giving his good car away for nothing. You wouldn’t either. The auction is the place to come on Saturday morning. Visitors can look
at the cars from 10:00 to 12:00am. The auction starts at 12:00 and ends at approx. 2:00 pm. Bidders are requested to put down a 200 deposit if a car has been allocated to them. After the auction and every day from 14:00 to 20:00, the allocated car can be tested PRIOR to finalizing the payment. Thereafter the transfer will be effective and a guaranteed “NO Embargo” will be issued by the gestoria. SECA is a fantastic concept that everyone could take advantage of. Just remember that miracles are in the bible and good deals are at SECA.

First to falter was second in the championship Dani Pedrosa, who shot from fourth to lead into turn one where he promptly missed his braking point and ran wide, rejoining down the order. Pedrosa later explained that when he pulled on the front brake lever nothing happened and he had to pump it several times.

Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to win an eighth Grand Slam title on Sunday and tighten his grip on world number one spot. The second seed ruthlessly dismissed the conqueror of six-time winner Roger Federer and Serb Novak Djokovic in his previous two matches, with Berdych going down in 2 hours 12 minutes. Nadal's comprehensive victory was his seventh in succession against 12th seed Berdych, who moved back into the ATP Top 10 on a career-high number eight ranking on Monday. The Spaniard has now won two of the three majors this season after lifting his fifth at Roland Garros in June. Nadal now stands 47-5 on the season with five titles - he now has 41 overall - after going 10
months without one until starting the spring clay season with another Monte Carlo crown. Nadal's trophy came two years after he outlasted Federer in a five-set drama to earn the 2008 title. He did not compete at Winbledon in 2009. The Spaniard will lead number two Djokovic by a big margin on the ATP, with Federer down to third for the first time since 2003. The winner
has now claimed his last 14 Wimbledon matches and becomes the only Spaniard in history to win twice at the All England club after contesting his fourth consecutive final. Berdych was playing for the first time on the Grand Slam big stage after first achieving a semi-final at a major at the French Open a month ago and going one step further at SW19.

Germany coach Joachim Loew believes Spain possess a number of players at the level of Argentina's Lionel Messi. Loew's side face the European Champions tonight for a place in the World Cup final and he said: "Spain remain the natural World Cup favourites. They not only have one Messi, but they have several Messis - they have a whole range of players that can win a game. “
A great weekend for Spain
DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again First of all this week I am sure I speak for all who attended the C.O.G.S. summer dinner at El Chaparral Golf Club when I say thank-you to Captain Dave Howarth and the committee for organising such a splendid event. It really was a great evening enjoyed hugely by all and I am sure will become a regular fixture in our social calendar. The professional game had two top-flight tournaments this week, the first being the French Open held at the French National Club just outside Paris. This is the second oldest championship in world golf after The Open. The event was keenly contested right to the end, but going up the last Churriana legend Miguel-Angel Jimenez held a two shot lead and seemed to be on course for victory over Francisco Molinari of Italy and Alejandro Canizares of Spain. Inexplicably Jimenez put his approach in the water and was forced into a playoff on the same hole but this time held his nerve for a fine win.
La Roja got the weekend off to a great start and David Villa underlined his reputation as the hottest striker in world football with a dramatic late winner that broke Paraguay hearts . Villa produced an icecool finish on 82 minutes after dogged Paraguay had threatened to pull off another great shock in this tournament of surprises.

FOOTBALL
Chelsea make a move for Torres Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has flown to South Africa to try to secure the signing of Liverpool and Spain striker Fernando Torres for a British record £50m. The Blues have opened the bidding with a £35m offer for the 26-year-old, who is also a target of Manchester City.

“Villa is so hungry for goals, it is why he seems to be first at every rebound. Our goalkeeper Iker Casillas also played a huge part with his penalty save. He has been extraordinary in this World Cup.’” Man-of-thematch Andres Iniesta added: “It will be a beautiful battle against Germany. We have been watching them through the World Cup and they are on the top of their game.”

Barcelona’s new £34million man moved quickest onto a rebound after Pedro’s shot had hit the post, and drilled in a low drive that itself hit both uprights before nestling into the net.
Meanwhile in the States Justin Rose continued his fine recent form to win the A T & T National event at the quaintly named Aronimink course in Pennsylvania. Despite the name this is a really tough layout and is tipped as a future U.S. Open venue but Rose displayed terrific temperament to hold off a strong field including Tiger Woods and win by one stroke. After his disappointing final round last week this showed real character.
