WORLD Weekly moan..... I’m baking
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
During these hot months sue and I in the News office live and die in Dunnes stores clothes. We were out the other day and I had on a Dunnes no-sleeves polo shirt, Dunnes silver flattie shoes and those wonderful Dunnes drawstring linen trousers that I have about 20 pairs of in pretty much all colours of the rainbow. they bring out new colours every year and, this year as I've got so porkie with the chockie bikkies, they're even more comfortable than ever. When I went over to the UK, I noticed that the stores there were selling linen trousers, practically the same but double the price so I bought some here for my friends in the UK and they love them. What's more the girls in the Coin La trocha store are friendly and helpful. I bought some plastic plates and bowls for the office in there the other day - €1 for 4 plates and €1.50 for the bowls – can't beat it and at least the colours brighten up the look of my diet salad! after the World Cup how do you get rid of the idea that footballers should fall over writhing in apparent agony whenever they're touched by an opposing player? how about this: If you're hurt, you get stretchered off and taken to the medical centre for a check up – should take about 10 minutes. If they're not really hurt – into the “Whinge Bin” you go for 10 minutes. that should sort out the men from the girlies!

Cubans urge Military to step in continued tough stance Continued from
FRONT PAGE
Ten of the 11 Cuban dissidents who arrived in Spain last week urged the European Union on Monday not to change its “Joint Position” on Cuba, adopted in December 1996. Its objective is to promote a transition towards democracy and respect for human rights, using “a constructive political dialogue focused on obtaining results”, and cooperation with all sectors of Cuban society. The EU imposed a selective trade embargo on Cuba in 2003. Spain has been trying, unsuccessfully, to convince the EU to change its position, arguing that dialogue is more likely to bring about change in Cuba. Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos was instrumental, together with the Catholic Church, in obtaining the Cuban government's agreement to release 59 politicians over the next few months, most of whom will end up in Spain. Sr Moratinos said on his return from Cuba last week that he saw no reason for the EU to maintain its tough stance towards the Caribbean island. The statement
issued by the Cuban dissidents in Madrid just three days later said: “Our leaving for Spain should not be seen as a gesture of goodwill but as an act of desperation by a regime that is urgently seeking credits of all kinds.” They also said they felt they had been deceived by the Spanish government. “We signed a document at the Spanish embassy in Havana just minutes before leaving to catch the plane in which the Spanish government promised to provide us with somewhere to live and enough money to live on as well as legal advice.” They said they had not received the promised legal advice which they needed to carry on their fight to obtain the release of all the political prisoners in Cuba. The Spanish government has so far not made any comments about the statements. Cuba yesterday announced she was ready to release more political prisoners.
The trouble started at the beginning of the year when the government decreed that the air controllers would not receive triple pay per hour for overtime worked, which would be paid the same as their normal working hours.
related medical problems. He said if the shifts were not better organised, what remained of the summer season could become “more complicated”.
Since then an increasing number of air controllers have been calling in sick. On Monday, nearly 35% of the air controllers at Barcelona's El Prat airport were sick. Eighteen failed to turn up for the morning shift and 21 were missing from the afternoon shift, causing delays of between 30 and 60 minutes in outgoing flights.
However, the minister said there was clear proof that the reasons were not medical. He said two of the “absolutely necessary” qualifications for the job were fluency in English and the sort of psychophysical condition “that is incompatible with stress and anxiety”. He said if so many air controllers were suffering from stress it indicated that they were not qualified for the job. He said there were also cases
A spokesman for the air controllers' union on Tuesday denied that this is a covert strike action and blamed the wave of absenteeism on badly organised shifts which were causing stress-

of doctors – sometimes related to the air controllers – who were handing out medical certificates left, right and centre. He said Social Security inspectors were investigating each case individually and would take the necessary legal measures where discrepancies were found. Sr Blanco said that one thing was quite clear: “The air controllers are working fewer hours than last year and they're not being paid triple for overtime. That makes me think that if they were getting more money they would have fewer aches and pains and suffer less stress.”
Debate results uncertain The government's Centre of Sociological Research said Sr Zapatero won last week's debate on the state of the nation by six points while surveys by most of the major newspapers gave victory to opposition
leader Mariano Rajoy. However the public was quite categorical about one question – a majority did not want the next election to be brought forward as demanded by Sr Rajoy – but they would

Teenage girl dies in fairground accident A 15-year-old girl was killed when one of the articulated arms of the Pendulum attraction at the Tibidabo fairground in Barcelona plunged 38 metres to the ground on Saturday, injuring two of her friends, one of them seriously. Some three hours before the accident happened, mechanics from the fairground's maintenance company were called in to investigate a strong squeak in the apparatus. It was closed down for 10 minutes before being declared functional. An
independent inspection after the accident revealed that the Pendulum's anchoring system was not strong enough to bear its weight. When asked why the attraction had worked for four years without any problems, the engineer who carried out the
inspection said continuous use had finally revealed the basic flaw in the anchoring system's design. He said the other alternative was that the screws holding the system together had gradually come loose during that period before finally
snapping. The fairground stayed closed on Sunday to reopen Monday and the Pendulum has been out of action since the accident. At press time, there was still no decision about its future – either to give it a complete overhaul or close it down altogether.

Josep Antoni Duran, the parliamentary spokesman for the moderate Catalan nationalist party, Convergencia y Union, said in a recent interview that it would be very boring to watch Barça playing against second class clubs like Espanyol, Lleida or Terrassa. He had been asked if it would be a good idea for Catalonia to have its own football federation and national team, like Scotland and England. For many national and international football fanatics, it is the eternal rivalry between Real Madrid and Barça which makes it so exciting to follow Spanish football. Sr Duranis is a hardliner when it comes to obtaining more powers for the Catalan regional government but he has never called for outright independence from Spain.

The general secretary of the UGT union, Cándido Méndez, said on Tuesday that it was “inconceivable” for the prime minister to attend the traditional miners' rally held in September in the Asturian mining town of Rodiezmo when a general strike was in the offing. Sr Zapatero had originally announced his intention to attend as usual, then decided over the weekend that his crowded agenda ruled out his attendance. The UGT and the country's other main union, the Workers Commissions (CC.OO) have called a general strike for September 19th. The miners' rally is held on the first weekend of that month.

Spain makes big death cuts
Red Cross warns of drowning risks
New Army Museum opened Crown Prince Felipe officially opened the new Army Museum in Toledo's Alcazar fortress on Monday, 14 years after the government decided to move it out of Madrid. However, the museum in Madrid did not close until 2005 and the transfer of the exhibits did not start until the beginning of 2008. The new museum is twice the size of the original one (8,000 m2) and houses more than 36,000 pieces going back to 1492 when Spain was united by the Catholic Monarchs and the
armies of the different kingdoms that made up Spain until they were merged into one. The most recent exhibits include pieces from both sides in the Civil War and from Franco's Blue Division which fought on the German side on the Russian front during World War Two. The history of the
Alcazar, where pro-Franco military men and their families withstood a long siege at the beginning of the Civil War, occupies an important place among the exhibits. An estimated 700,00 people are expected to visit the museum every year. The museum will be open from 10 am until 9pm until the end of September.
So far this year, the Red Cross has rescued 822 people who were at risk of drowning, of whom 547 ended up in hospital. It urged bathers to take more precautions when in the water. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the State Association of Accident Victims said that between 120 and 150 children drown each year at the sea, swimming pools, rivers and reservoirs. The spokesman said there were some 650,000 swimming pools in Spain, the second highest in the EU and that 86% of drownings happened in private pools. He said the biggest danger was a lack of vigilance – some 77% the victims lost their lives after being left unattended for less than five minutes. The most dangerous age group was from one to four. Last weekend, a couple and their 20-year-old daughter drowned in a reservoir in Teruel province. The Guardia Civil said the man got into difficulties in the water and his wife and daughter tried to save him.
Latvia and Spain are the two countries in the EU which have most successfully reduced the numbers of deaths on their roads in the past ten years – by more than 50% as opposed to an average of 36% in other EU countries. Last year, more than 35,000 people died on EU roads and for every death it is estimated that four people suffered serious injuries. The EU has proposed reducing the number of deaths by half by 2020 by improving safety measures in cars
and lorries, making roads safer, developing “intelligent” vehicles and increasing controls, among other thing. The UK is the EU country with the lowest number of deaths on the road, followed by Germany and Malta.
For most Catalans Spain is home A poll taken since the Constitutional Court ruled that Catalonia cannot call itself a nation shows that only 8% of Catalans see Spain as a foreign country. Two out of every 10 people questioned said they were citizens of Spain while another two out of ten saw Spain as a “state
made up of several nationalities and regions”. The same poll in the Basque country revealed that 11% of Basques viewed Spain as a foreign country while a majority said several nationalities and regions form what is commonly referred to as Spain.

Germans turn down transfer request The owners of the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen are refusing all offers for Paul the “octopus oracle” from Spaniards who desperately want to bring their mollusc friend to what they consider to be his true home. Paul became an international celebrity as he correctly called the outcome of Germany's seven matches in the World Cup, picking a mussel from a tank marked with the flag of the would-be winner. He is wanted for the pot in several countries – the Argentines want to put him in a paella – and it has been reported that after Spain beat Germany in the semifinals, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero offered to send a security team to protect the 2½year-old octopus from angry Germans. Paul is now so popular here that a town in Galicia tried to borrow him. Officials in
Caraballino, population 14,000, declared that the octopus was their ''honorary friend'' and wanted Paul's presence to promote a seafood festival. A local businessman also offered €30,000 to buy Paul, but Sea Life declined. In response to hundreds of requests to bring Paul to Spain, the Madrid Zoo last week asked Sea Life if it would be willing to make a deal to bring him in as a tribute to the Spanish football team's victory. Spokeswoman Amparo Fernandez said the zoo had asked for Paul to come on either a temporary or permanent basis, and had proposed an exchange of
animals. She said no financial offer had been made, but that it would be considered if necessary. But Sea Life spokeswoman Kerstin Kuehn said he will enjoy the rest of his life – estimated to be just a year – in a “greatly deserved retirement in Sea Life in Oberhausen.''

Destruction of coast goes on
EWS IN BRIEF
Nearly 8 hectares of coastline are destroyed each day by what Greenpeace called “unstoppable” construction in its latest annual report on the state of Spain's coasts.
editorial@thenewsonline.es
Nearly 44% of the population live along the coasts, which represent only 7% of the country's total territory. Greenpeace said the construction blight has extended to areas that were once considered the best preserved – Murcia, Huelva, Almeria, Rias Bajas, Cantabria and Asturias. The most destroyed coastlines are in Catalonia (40%), Valencia (38%) Andalucia (26%), Cantabria (23%) and Murcia (22%).

PONTEVEDRA. Drug patriarch Manuel Charlin Gama, 78, was released from jail on Saturday, after serving 20 years of two sentences of 13 years and 20 years for drug trafficking. He appeared in court again two days later in connection with a money laundering operation allegedly involving two of his sons and other relatives and was released on €30,000 bail.

MADRID. The National Police have arrested a former artillery captain for allegedly stealing the bank details of 155,000 members, including former PM Felipe Gonzalez, of a lawyers' insurance scheme. Work to excavate and identify the soldiers began two years ago, after the bodies were discovered. Of the bodies recovered, 205 have now been identified as belonging to Australian soldiers, three served with the British army and 42 are still classified as unknown. Opening the ceremony to mark the anniversary of the battle, the Duke of Kent,
president of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, said the soldiers were "lost no longer... here, at last, in peace". Relatives of those killed during the battle paid tribute to their family members, reading moving extracts from diaries and letters home. During the ceremony, a general service wagon which had been restored after its use during WWI carried the last coffin on its poignant journey. Behind it, Prince Charles walked with members of

Last week French MPs voted to ban the wearing of full face veils in public. The bill, which was overwhelmingly approved by France's lower house of parliament, must now be ratified by the Senate in September to become law. If it is passed, it will be illegal to wear garments such as the face-covering niqab or bodycovering burka, anywhere in
Several other European countries including Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium have debated regulating the use of face covering garments. But Mr Green said such a move was "very unlikely" to be copied in the UK. Catherine Heseltine from the Muslim Public Affairs Committee said MPs should not waste their time discussing it. She said: "Britain is a free country. We value our freedoms and we don't want MPs or the government telling British citizens what they can or can't wear.
Tax system to be simplified Following the government's decision to streamline the tax system to attract more international investment, the Treasury is to set up an Office for Tax Simplification to analyse "potential reform options". Exchequer secretary David Gauke has promised to "give our economy the boost it so urgently needs in the years ahead". He said the tax system created by the previous government was overly complex and has made the tax affairs of millions of families and businesses across the UK extremely complicated. The new body will look at all tax reliefs, allowances and exemptions and conduct a review of business taxation. Chairman Michael Jack and director John Whiting are unpaid.

Cameron agrees to Lockerbie meeting
EWS IN BRIEF Got a story? Send your stories and pictures to The News
editorial@thenewsonline.es
Prime Minister David Cameron has agreed to meet four US senators during his visit to the United states to discuss allegations that BP lobbied for the release of the Lockerbie bomber. Mr Cameron had earlier refused a meeting, saying he could not fit it into a "very full schedule" in the US. The 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 killed 270 people, mostly Americans. A Downing Street spokesman said there had been a change of plan because the prime minister recognised the strength of feeling of the
families of the victims. Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was released by Scottish Justice Minister Kenny MacAskill in August last year on health grounds and was said to have as little as three months to live. He is still alive. Writing in the Wall Street Journal ahead of his US visit, Mr Cameron said there was "no daylight" between the
views of the UK and the US on the release of Megrahi. He said: “I have the deepest sympathies for the families of those killed in the bombing. Abdelbaset alMegrahi was found guilty of murdering 270 people. They weren't allowed to go home and die in their own bed with their relatives around them. He added: "I never saw the case for
releasing him, and I think it was a very bad decision." The new UK coalition government has said the decision was a "mistake". It was Mr Cameron's first visit to the US as prime minister, and talks with President Barack Obama are expected to focus on the war in Afghanistan, the Gulf spill and the Megrahi case.
US should drop 'cowboy logic' In a speech broadcast live on state television, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said the US must stop using "cowboy logic" if it wants dialogue with Iran over its nuclear programme. He
said: "We are for negotiations, but to do so you have to sit down like a good boy. They adopt a resolution to force a dialogue, but this cowboy logic has no place in Iran." Mr Ahmadinejad added
that the US's real concern was not that Iran may make a bomb, but its rise as a regional power. Following on from recent UN sanctions, Washington has imposed its toughest ever measures on Tehran
for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment programme. The US and major European powers say Iran is trying to build nuclear arms. Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful.
Driver 'error' led to train crash
Critic faces trial over book
WEST BENGAL. Preliminary investigations indicate that driver error may have led to Monday's train crash which left 63 people dead. The express had entered the station in Sainthia town at full speed, even though it had a scheduled stop there, railway officials said. The driver did not brake or heed stop messages, moments before the express hit a stationary passenger train.
SINGAPORE. Alan Shadrake, who was arrested after launching his book, "Once a Jolly Hangman - Singapore Justice in the Dock", at the weekend, has been released on bail. A trial date, July 30th, has been set and Mr Shadrake is not allowed to leave the country without permission. The government has a long record of vigorously prosecuting anyone who attacks the country's image.
'World's oldest Free honeymoon champagne' found for gay couple FINLAND. Divers have found 30 bottles of champagne on the Baltic seabed thought to to have been made by Clicquot (now Veuve Clicquot) between 1782 and 1788. When they opened one, they found the wine was still in good condition. If an analysis confirms it was produced in the 18th century, it would be the oldest drinkable champagne in the world.
MEXICO CITY. The leftleaning City Council has offered a free honeymoon to the first gay couple to marry in Argentina under a new law. The couple would have all expenses paid in the Mexican capital and in the beach resort of Cancun. On Thursday, Argentina became the first Latin American country to legalise same-sex marriage. Mexico City also allows gay couples to wed.

Top officials currently enjoying the use of cars costing €60,000 to €80,000 – Audi, BMW, Citroen, Ford Mondeo, Volvo, Honda Accord or Peugeot 607 – will then join lower ranking officials who have to make do with Saabs and Renaults. The luxury cars are replaced every five years/200,000 km (petrol) or six years/300,000 for diesel. A junta spokesman said the objective was to reduce fuel costs and maximise energy efficiency.

Property repos rising steadily The number of houses and apartments being repossessed by the banks for defaulting on mortgage payments has risen steadily in Malaga city since the end of 2007, when the economic recession began to bite. At the end of that year 300 properties had been
embargoed. In the first six months of this year the banks have embargoed 676 properties according to figures from the Malaga courts – an average of five every working day. One Court official said that was just under the average number of repos a week in 2007.

A 67 year old man was taken to the local health centre by a group of men late last Thursday with bullet wounds in his chest and abdomen. Before leaving, they told the emergency staff he had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun. The victim was rushed to hospital in Malaga, where he is said to be recovering satisfactorily. The Guardia later verified that it was a 40 year old friend of the victim who fired the shots while hunting with a group of friends out of season. All of the men, including the victim, apparently live in Guaro. The Guardia have not released the identities of those involved in the incident.

Patients to be ‘billed’ Starting in the autumn, patients at the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella will be given a‘bill’at the end of their treatment showing how much it cost. They are not expected to pay it – the purpose of the exercise is make people realise that “free” medical treatment is far from free and that it is the taxpayer – that is, themselves - who are footing the bill. A recent Health Ministry study showed that very few people are aware of this. The procedure, which will eventually be extended to
all clinics and hospitals in Andalucia, has already been implemented in Valencia and Navarre provinces. The Valencia regional government plans to extend the procedure to pharmacies to inform people of the real cost of medicines which are currently sold at 40% below cost and are dispensed free to pensioners.

ALGECIRAS. Crown Prince Felipe officially inaugurated the new terminal at Algeciras port last Friday, built with an investment of more than €200 million from the Korean company, Hanjin Shipping. The half-built 293,000 m2 terminal is already handling 9,000 containers a week since it started functioning two months ago, and will handle 1.8 million containers a year.
SERRANIA DE RONDA. MALAGA. In the first six months of this year, 18 people lost their lives in accidents, down from 27 for the same period last year. A third of those who died were motorcyclists. The number of injured also dropped by nearly two thirds. Provincial Traffic chief Trinidad Hernandez said that while the figure was encouraging, road accidents usually rose during the summer.
ANDALUCIA. The price of housing across Andalucia has dropped on average 3.7% so far this year, with the biggest drop being registered in Cordoba (6.3%). The drop in Malaga province was 5.8%. The figures were reflected in most of the regions, with the exception of Asturias, Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Cantabria, where increases of between 1% to 2% were registered.

The times they are a-changing Sloppy inquiry
T
here are growing signs that, politically speaking, the Spanish people are coming of age. For several months now, opinion polls show that more and more people see the politicians as one of the country’s main three problems – the other two being the economic situation and unemployment. This should not come as a surprise. We have just lived through six years of the most blatantly sectarian, and inept, government within living memory – the last one being during the Republican years (1931-36) and there are very few people around to remember them.
B
ut all bad things eventually come to an end, just as the Franco dictatorship did, and while it would be too much to hope for a new Transition, I suspect the results of next year’s local and regional elections could make a lot of politicians realise that there is more to politics than just winning elections.
S
r Zapatero’s latest obsession is to convince the Spanish people that the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, is only interested in winning the next general election while the Socialists only have the good of the country at heart. He kept repeating this during last week’s parliamentary debate which was televised live as his only answer to the accusations all the parties threw at him. Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy dragged up every promise Zapatero had ever made – and broken. His reply – you’re only interested in winning the next election. As the other parties represented in Parliament took the stand and repeated Rajoy’s accusations – and throwing in some of their own – Zapatero’s reply was – the PP is only interested in winning the next elections. If you believe the Socialists aren’t interested in hanging on to power, then you’ll believe anything.
W
hat Zapatero and his lot haven’t grasped yet is that their credibility will soon touch rock bottom. Incredible as it may seem, it’s the right-of-centre PP which is calling for fairer deficit cuts, while the Socialist government came up with the incredibly un-Socialist idea of making the little people pay for their unbridled social spending. The PP maintains that there are several areas where real savings could be made – such as reducing the top-heavy State bureaucracy – instead of freezing pensions – something the Socialists said they would never do – or reducing public workers’ salaries by 5%. This latter will hit the lower-paid workers – don’t forget PSOE stands for Spanish Socialist Workers Party – the hardest. (I’ve been saying for years that the PSOE should drop the word workers from its name and replace it with a “b” for bourgeois.)

If I were to take my video camera and, let’s say, tape a police officer frisking a suspect for drugs or even maybe recording one person at a demonstration for no other purpose but to harass them or for my own gain, I could perhaps find myself in court facing if not a criminal but a civil suit. So it came with great astonishment last week that there is one judge in Madrid who believes that surveillance of individuals, for no other reason but to keep tabs on what they are doing, isn’t a crime.
minister, resigned on June 23rd after his former wife, Yolanda Laviana, told El País that her ex-husband was indeed tailing politicians on orders by Aguirre’s current deputy premier and Prada’s successor, Ignacio González. Laviana was fired from her job as executive secretary to the president of Telemadrid, the regional television network, just hours before Gamón handed in his resignation. Judge Valcalce never called her in to testify and hastily shelved her sloppy investigation as the pressure to call in Laviana was getting too tight for comfort.

hat’s what Judge Carmen Valcarce ruled on Thursday when she ordered a temporary stay in the proceedings of an investigation into months-long allegations of political spying by members of the Popular Partycontrolled regional government in Madrid. The judge shelved the inquiry on grounds that it couldn’t be determined how much public money, if any, had been used to spy on public officials.

strike. After talks between union and management to find a way to avoid future strikes, the Metro company has agreed to slash the wage cut from €100 a month to just €20. €100 may not sound a lot but it cuts deeply into a take-home pay which for most Metro workers is under €1,000 a month. Remember that the average salary for the majority of Spaniards is €900.
ne of the main national newspapers, the ABC, sent its reporters out into the streets of Madrid last week to talk to young people to find out how they feel about things in general. The result was an article titled “Generation without complexes” – the “ninis”, as the paper has dubbed them. Ni complejos, ni Franco (neither complexes nor Franco). According to ABC, the ninis feel more Spanish than their parents and grandparents ever did. Forget nationalism, forget regional whingeing, we’re for Spain – as in the national selection that brought the World Cup home. I know many people think football is the new opium of the masses, but the national selection has shown a whole generation used to listening to endless political arguments between the Left, Right and a variety of Nationalists that when the Spanish set their mind to it, they can pull together and walk away with the prize. This is the generation that sooner or later will end up governing the country and hopefully it will be the generation that eliminates dogmatism, petty nationalism and a yearning to return to the chaotic years of the Second Republic from the national psyche and concentrates on governing for the good of all Spaniards.

hen mayors start asking their foreign residents for suggestions about how to make them happier, then you know that local elections are in the offing. Mayors up and down the Costa are going to jump on this particular bandwagon and foreign residents should seize the opportunity to get things done. Further down the line, The News will be opening its own Suggestions Box in an effort to draw up a comprehensive list of problems affecting the foreign community. Meanwhile, if approached by mayors making promises – get them in writing, preferably in stone.
he spook case first broke last year when El País reported that aides to Esperanza Aguirre, the PP regional government chief, ordered security agents in 2008 to tail Madrid Deputy Mayor Manuel Cobo and former deputy regional premier Alfredo Prada. The two officials were seen as part of Aguirre’s rival camp as she was trying to wrest control of the PP following the general elections in which the opposition lost. A bitter internal battle, which continues today, ensued between her and Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, with both Cobo and Prada joining the ranks of Gallardón supporters. ollowing the filing of civil lawsuits by Cobo and Prada, investigative Judge Valcarce opened an inquiry in which she took testimony from about a dozen witnesses and ordered a tracking of cellphones used by security agents to determine what their positions were at the time when the two officials were tailed. The lawsuits alleged that then-Madrid security director Sergio Gamón set up a surveillance team of former Civil Guard officers to keep tabs on their meetings and day-to-day activities.
J
udge Valcarce acknowledged that both officials had been hounded but explained that “the fact that a person is followed does not constitute a criminal offence, unless the information obtained by this method is used for purposes to perpetuate a crime: coerce, blackmail, threaten, kidnap, etc.” Oddly, if the Madrid government’s henchmen were sent out on 24-hour watches, I tend to think that the information gathered would have certainly been used to “coerce” or “threaten” Cobo or Prada.

o now the PP is saying that the entire espionage episode was the product of an El Pais reporter’s imagination who, by the way, had been subpoenaed to testify. It seems that this sordid episode of city politics only goes to support the premise that if you don’t play by Esperanza Aguirre’s rules you will get burned.
Sex ads ban he prime minister believes he has the right strategy to combat people trafficking in Spain. Sr Zapatero announced on Thursday that he wants Spanish newspapers to help him in this fight by no longer publishing classified advertisements that offer sexual services. Immediately, the Spanish Daily Newspaper Publishers Association (AEDE) rejected the idea because, it says, “whatever type of advertising restriction” placed by the government “violates the fundamental rights recognized by the Constitution that refer to freedom of expression and the right to information.” he government is trying to work around that, as well as trying to avoid a head-on collision with current legislation on prostitution, which for the most part is considered legal in this country. Zapatero said that the Equality Ministry will hammer out a formula that prohibits advertisements offering sexual services in the country’s leading newspapers while at the same time “makes the public more aware that they should not be complicit in this activity.”
P
eople-trafficking for sexual activities is a serious matter, not only in Spain but throughout the rest of the continent. However, curtailing advertisements in the newspapers is not going to help solve the problem. The real scoop is that persons who want to find sexual pleasure mostly turn to the internet. There are dozens of websites in Spain that are dedicated to offering these paid services by both female and male prostitutes. Plus, there are even more night clubs, bars, saunas, brothels and restaurants where you can go to find a prostitute in the capital alone. Restricting newspaper ads isn’t even a start to battling human traffickers.

by email In a rubbish container in Monda we found 6 puppies of just 2 days old which were, more or less, already dead. We phoned everybody we knew but everyone said they would not take them as they were too young and had no chance of survival adding that it was better to put them to sleep. I contacted Janice from Animals In Distress who
took them in and looked after them as if they were her own children, feeding them every two hours and giving them all the love and care they needed. The puppies all survived under her care and are now six happy, healthy, waterdog/cross little things. These people touched my soul and I can only ask your readers to help them by giving blankets, towels, baskets, leads and collars,
food and of course last but not least, money. Anything you can do would be very much appreciated by the wonderful people at AID and I would like to say a huge personal thank you to them for all their dedication to the animals in their care and all their hard work.
The aid ships would not try to bring arms into Gaza for they knew that they would be stopped; if there had been arms the Israelis would certainly have displayed them to reporters.
What small arms Hamas does receive will be smuggled in much less openly. What the aid convoy was trying to achieve (apart from its success in putting Israel in the dock) was to bring to Gaza cement which is desperately needed to rebuild the houses the Israelis keep destroying.

Apollo 11 - a hoax? Today, Wednesday July 21st, marks the 41st anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.
Andrew Carless by email Martin Delfin has allowed himself to be taken in by Israeli propaganda.

Israel's policy, however, is to keep life in Gaza as uncomfortable as possible in the hope that the people of Gaza will get rid of Hamas. Of course, they are achieving the exact opposite but that is the politics of the Middle East!
I was a 10 year old boy in 1969 glued to the television set watching it all as it happened; the headmaster at my school had even told my mum that it would be ok for me to stay off school to watch it as it would take place very late on a Sunday night/ Monday morning, way past my bedtime. I remember the black and white grainy images of Neil Armstrong coming down the ladder of the Lunar Module and announcing that it was ‘one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind’. So why do I still get people asking me if I really believed that they landed on the Moon? These people always quote unresearched ‘facts’ about flags waving and no stars in the pictures and they are convinced that it was all done in a TV studio. But let’s look at some of the undeniable facts that prove once and for all that 12 very brave astronauts walked on the Moon in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The flag that people quote as ‘waving’ was waving only when the astronaut twisted it and as there is no air resistance on the Moon to slow it down then it continued to wave for a lot longer than on Earth. There are no stars appearing in the photographs because the exposure was set to take photographs in bright sunlight so stars won’t appear on the film. There were over 400,000
people involved in the Moon landings; over 10,000 in front line operations such as mission control, life support, communication, navigation etc. The Apollo capsule was recovered from the ocean by the crew of an aircraft carrier. You would have to keep an awful lot of people sworn to secrecy for it not to have come out. The radio and television transmissions were being received by listening stations from all around the world that were nothing to do with NASA and all were pointed at the Moon; Jodrell Bank near Manchester England is a radio telescope that was used for much of the telemetry from the Apollo missions. During the Apollo 15 mission, astronaut Dave Scott performed an experiment live on TV when he dropped a hammer and a feather at the same time to see which
hit the ground first: lo and behold, they both landed together, the only place that you could do this is on the Moon. Apollo 15 also left a reflector on the surface of the Moon, this is still being used to fire a high powered laser beam at the Moon and measure the length of time it takes for the reflection to return to earth thus telling scientists that the Moon is actually moving away from the earth at about 4cm a year. And where did all the Moon rock come from? Finally go and ask the Russians - nothing would have given them more pleasure to expose the whole thing as a hoax. I don’t think that they landed on the Moon, I KNOW that they landed! New puppy law in place It's always been important to neuter your animal to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens. Now a new law introduced just over 2 months ago makes that even more so. Did you know that each puppy you have must now - by law - be wormed at 4-5 weeks, have its 1st vaccination at 6-8 weeks, 2nd vaccination at 10 weeks, 2nd worming at 11 weeks, 3rd vaccination and rabies at 12 weeks, microchip and registration at 12 weeks, passport at 12 weeks and 2nd rabies at 16 weeks. This costs a grand total of 120 euros per dog and our hard pressed animal refuges now have to follow this procedure for each puppy they take in at a
time when pressure on funds is enormous. These puppies, six in all, are at SOS looking for a home and CHAIN have borne the costs, and all because the English owner of their mother didn´t bother to have his dog neutered. If you are not prepared to accept the consequences please neuter your dog. It's not fair to pass the buck onto others. Owning a dog means you take on an important responsibility so please do act accordingly.

Serried ranks of thousands of olive trees sit firmly rooted in rich red Andalucian soil and the smell of the olives permeates the air, while mountain outcrops break the skyline, and the beauty of Andalucia can be seen for miles around.

s with all Spanish towns, Archidona holds its many colourful ferias and festivals throughout the year and around July 27th the townspeople celebrate the Fiesta of San Aurelio while the main summer event is the Fiesta of the Virgen de Gracia, the Patron Saint, from August 14th to 18th.
A
rchidona has been a town that over the centuries has enjoyed periods of both great prosperity and impoverishment as it faced occupation and the ravages of the reclamation and its long and eventful history has resulted in it being declared a village of historical and artistic importance.

At the end of May/first week of June Archidona celebrates its three day La Feria del Perro - it's a big event as national and international champion show dogs compete, demonstrations of working dogs are laid on and dog lovers from miles around arrive in the town. The dog show began in 1993 and is now recognised as having cultural importance. But you don´t need to wait till then to see what respect dogs are held in, in this town. Smile this Friday Yes, it’s that time of year again and this Friday, July 24th sees the 3rd annual Club La Costa Smile Mile. This is a charity event on behalf of The Smile Foundation and consists of a one mile (=1,6093 Km.) run or walk backwards as the Boy Scouts tend to do! - around the Marina del Sol resort that is off the N340 Km 206, between Fuengirola and La Cala- starting and finishing by the old sales tents. The Sports Club Runners will start at 8pm and once finished, the Fun Runners will commence, at approximately 8.15pm. Bring your family, friends, relatives and neighbours and make it once more, an enjoyable memorable night for all and especially for the children of the Cruz Dias Hospital/ADIMI Centre project. As always, 100% of the proceeds of the event will go towards the project which is to build a hospital for disadvantaged children and their families in Mijas. President of CLC Roy Peires will as ususal be putting his hand in his pocket to pay for the running of the Smile Mile so all the money taken in
JK’s
will go to the building of the hospital. Willie Thorne has agreed to return to act as official race starter and the best news is that the cost of entry for all participants this year has been reduced to €5. You can register in advance at smilemileregistration@clu blacosta.com, fax it to 952 669 848, or pay on the day when the entry stand will be open from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm then from 4pm onwards. All runners will receive a Smile Mile T-shirt and a Certificate of Participation from Willie Thorne at the finish line – some of you may now have more than one in your collection! There will be a cup for the winner of the Sports Club Runners race and also 4 trophies for the winners of the Fun Run in the categories of: - 1st Female, 1st Male, 1st Senior Citizen, aged 60 or over and 1st Child aged 10 or under. There will be a separate area for children’s fun and games and, of course, the now famouse Club La Costa BBQ. For more info go to www.clublacosta.com\smi lemile. Enjoy!
“Tapaporte” your ticket to Mijas at night A new summer innovation from Mijas Pueblo is the “Tapaporte”, a Tapas passport. Your “Tapaporte” comes with a map depicting a route through Mijas village showing the twelve Mijeño Tapas bars participating in this delightful scheme. Bearers of a “Tapaporte”, once stamped by the participating establishment, can then enjoy a drink of, wine, water, beer or a cool refreshing Tinto de Verano and a tasty Spanish Tapa or two for just € 1.50 before moving on to the next one. Obviously a little more subtle and culturally refined than a Rugby Club pub crawl but just as much fun, this has all the makings of a great night out in Mijas village that will not cost the earth. In case you don’t know, a Tapa or Lid is a small tasty snack that is traditionally served with a beverage in many parts of Spain. Tapas come in all shapes and sizes, originally thought to be just a slice of bread it has developed into a world wide art form and
has the added advantage of eating while drinking. The “Tapaporte” is valid from 8.00 pm until 12.00 midnight every Tuesday and Thursday night throughout the months of July and August and is available on request and without charge from the Mijas Tourist office (open 9.00 am – 8.00 pm) as well as other participating establishments in Mijas Village. There is a bus service from and back to Fuengirola centre and plenty of taxis if you stay late. In addition there is an Artisans’ handicrafts market and various Flamenco, Cuban and Latino dance shows held in the main square Plaza Virgen del la Peña also on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Similar passports are available for the Chiringuitos on the Mijas Costa beaches; Ruta del Arroz and Ruta del Espeto offering similar culinary experiences based on Paella and fish dishes.

Toy Story 3 BY LEE UNKRICH Voices by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack Toy Story 3 - the best film ever produced by Pixar? Discuss. Fantastic visuals and a story line designed to leave adults as well as kids choking back the tears. Andy is now 18 and off to college so Woody, Buzz and the rest are feeling a bit unloved. They assume Andy won´t want them any more so end up in the Sunnyside Daycare Centre where our much loved characters meet a whole new bunch of toys
including Barbie's Ken (Michael Keaton) and Mr Pricklepants the thespian hedgehog (Timothy Dalton). All the new characters are as deliciously worked up as the originals. There's a great escape to rival any in the history of Hollywood and enough tear jerking to rival Titanic. There won´t be a sequel - BUT released this week is Toy Story 3:The Video Game. Developers Avalanche
worked closely with Pixar to produce a game that captures the heart and spirit of the movie and players can create their own Toy Story 3 universe by using Toy Box mode where you can play as Buzz. Woody or Jessie and roam around on your own missions. The game is aimed as much at adults as kids and is available in formats XBox360, PS3, PC, Wii, DS, PSP. The legacy lives on.

Box office hit for Jaden The remake of The Karate Kid, starring Will Smith's 12-year-old son Jaden, pulled in a three day box office opening of $56 million in the US - more than any of his dad's movies, except for Hancock and I Am Legend. Will Smith joked that his boy could end up the bigger star of the two and people
were now calling him the Karate Kid's dad. Jaden appears with Jackie Chan as the popular movie gets a modern reworking. And unlike some of this year's remakes it's been getting great reviews - so a summer must see for the family. The movie is a Smith family affair - Jaden s acting parents are co-producers.
fans to stick too closely to the original format. Actor Liam Neeson said last weekend that he too had not been a fan of the telly series but had been attracted by the script for the film, which centred on real trouble spots in the
n 1890 Oscar Wilde’s first novel The Picture of Dorian Gray was published and though the initial critical reception was poor, with the book gaining notoriety for being 'mawkish and nauseous,' 'unclean,' 'effeminate,' and 'contaminating’. But time has proved its critics wrong as over the years the story has fascinated Hollywood and European movie and TV show makers.
“
The Picture of Dorian Gray” seen in1913 was a short directed by Philips Smalley and starred Wallace Reid. Smalley directed 339 movies from 1911 to 1919, what a guy! “The Picture of Dorian Gray” 1915, another short, was directed by Eugene Moore and starred Harris Gordon.
“
The Picture of Dorian Gray” in 1916 was a first feature which was a reasonable effort, although Henry Victor wasn’t a very convincing Dorian. In 1918 two versions of this morbid tale were released - a Hungarian version called “Az Élet Királya” and a German version better known as “Das Bildnis de Dorian Gray”, which was pretty good.
T
Neeson role “therapeutic” Joe Carnahan, director of The A Team, has confessed that he was not a fan of the hugely popular 80s TV series. But he thinks that made him the best choice for the job because he was less likely to bow to pressure from die-hard
I
world. Neeson plays A Team boss Hannibal Smith, and said that filming had been therapeutic, and had helped him while he grieved for the loss of his wife, Natasha Richardson, who died in March 2009 after a skiing accident.
he most famous version is the 1945 “The Picture of Dorian Gray” starring Angela Lansbury and Hurd Hatfield - it’s also the only version that has ever been nominated for and won an Oscar. It won won Best Cinematography and Angela Lansbury was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
B
ack in 1969 there was a Mexican TV series based on this story. Then in 1970 another German movie version, this one was called “Dorian Gray” or “The Evils of Dorian Gray”.
T
he German versions seem to be the best. In 1973 the Germans released a made for TV movie called “Das Bildnis de Dorian Gray” starring Shane Briant (above right). A French movie was released in 1977.

983 saw the made for TV movie “The Sins of Dorian Gray” , which starred Anthony Perkins . A year later , a strange, long and bizarre movie called “Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevadpresse” appeared.. the English version being called “The Image of Dorian Gray in the Yellow Press”.
“
Dorian” or “Pact With the Devil” starring Malcolm McDowell was released in 2001 and then in 2004 Josh Duhamel played Dorian in “The Picture of Dorian Gray” or “Portrait of Evil”. Neither of these versions are very good, and the 2007 version is even worse.
W
hich brings us to the present with the 2009“Dorian Gray”. Ben Barnes (top) is perfect as Dorian, managing the conversion between the innocent young man, to the seductive charmer, to the fearpossessed psychopath effortlessly. Colin Firth is magnificent in his pivotal role. Together, Barnes and Firth carry the film. Director Oliver Parker's take on the story is dark and surreal, placing slightly more emphasis on the real than imagined. Today's technical abilities allow the images to be more explicit than in the previous black and white versions of the story, so visual and special effects are dramatic and effective. I would most definitely say this version is by far the best, and not to be sniffed at.

It is as if something you have been hesitant about suddenly clicks and a feeling of security surges through your veins – you totally know where you are going and have no more need to question the validity of a path. Your ability to be more discerning with others is helping you ascertain where you fit in and this will save you a great deal of heartache in the future. Chores and responsibilities need to be dealt with so don’t let the temptation of desire throw you off course. Your life is changing and what has been is no longer going to be able to be sustained. This new-found perception will push you into creative overdrive and pure inspiration comes flooding in. Talents that have lain dormant will rise to the surface and this will lead you to the gates of financial gain. There is no going back. All this dynamic energy will attract others to you and your circle of acquaintances could increase dramatically over the next week or so. Emotional dramas have been playing an active role in your life for many months and your personal limits may have been reached or are just about to be. Ironically, greener pastures are calling you and as you embrace the unknown, wounds from the past are healed. Do not let anyone get in the way or try to bring you down - be positive and realistic, the tide is turning at last in your favour, with sweeping waves that will bring you to your shore. Everything that is happening is doing so at the right time and as it should, even if it doesn’t feel like it. It may feel as if your life is being weighed, measured and dissected but this is necessary so that the truth can be seen and not run away from. You may feel that someone is going behind your back but perhaps they are just seeing things that you are not aware of yet. Impulsive actions and decisions may go against you right now so take time to assimilate and think things through. It is time to throw a party because as from now it will feel as if many restrictions and limitations have been swept aside. This is a week for self-empowerment and to get a handle on recognizing your latent potential. It is all going to work out marvellously for you if you keep your head and do not react impulsively when others are pressing your trigger buttons. Use this time to accomplish as much as possible - the energy is on your side and if you work with it will take you far.
The stage is being set and the scenery is magnificent. Piece by piece it has come together like a masterpiece before you eyes, there are still many hours of work ahead of you, but at last you can see a glimpse of what it could be like. Certain aspects of your life will not blend with the new background and this will become obvious - what needs to be cast away and what now has rd September 23 - relevance in your life. A new adventure awaits. nd October 22

Something is changing and it is giving you the collywobbles even though the outlook could be much fairer on the other side – you worry that you are really up to it. There are endings happening as well as new beginnings and no matter how much you try and run away from facing reality, you probably won’t find any comfort in doing so. The key is not to give into any feelings of insecurity or fear but to stay calm, think before speaking and try to keep your own inner balance.
SAGITTARIUS You will do what it takes even if it appears that the odds are totally against you. In any situation that requires problem solving and stamina you are the one to get stuck right in there until it is sorted out. Your energy brings a world of difference to a situation, as you spread your wings of enterprise and ingenuity, to enshroud all who are caught up in a difficult scenario. As you nd November 22 - lead by example your popularity increases tenfold – there seems no stopping st December 21 you.
CAPRICORN A reprieve from the daily grind is welcomed and a trip away or enjoying spending time with those who mean a lot to you is highlighted. The daily stresses and strains wash away and this will do your health the world of good. This is a good time to pay attention to your diet and give yourself a health check-up, making changes accordingly. Love and affection are coming your December 22nd way and a sense of calm takes over. It may be next to impossible to keep January 19th secrets at the moment.

...you don’t have to be a chef!
You may have been concentrating on your own needs and been blinkered to what is going on around you. Someone may not be all that they seem and you would do well to trust your first impressions of this person and tread cautiously. There is a lot of domestic work that needs attention and many tasks to be undertaken to ensure the smooth running of the next few weeks. Relationship bonds may strengthen and you will be given an opportunity to move into a deeper emotional sphere.

Inside information is coming your way and you find out the truth of a matter – friends are trying to let you know not all has been as it appeared. Time spent in reflection and contemplation will help you to make sense of what you hear. Travel is calling you but not in a holiday way, more that you are answering a cry for help and you instinctively respond. You have a strong passion for something and you whole life is being geared up for this moment. The efforts that you have made do not fall on stony ground even if you cannot see the fruits of your labour immediately. Keep going as you have, putting one foot in front of the other and your presence will be making a greater impact than you realize. One relationship in particular means a great deal to you and it deepens and grows as a direct result of these efforts. It is important to speak up and let others know how you feel and also what you expect in return.
Basic bubble top brioche Ingredients:
(serves 4 or 6)
● 60ml cup warm water ● 60ml cup warm full fat milk ● 3 tsp active dry yeast ● 325gr cups all purpose flour ● 1½ teaspoons salt ● 3 large eggs, room temperature ● 3 tbsp sugar ● 12 tbsp unsalted butter at room temperature ● 1 large egg beaten to blend with 1 tsp water (for glaze)
Method ● Combine the water and milk in a bowl. If you are using a mixer use it with the paddle attachment. Sprinkle yeast over and stir to moisten evenly. Let stand for about about 8 minutes until it dissolves. ● Add the flour and salt to the mixture and blend at slow speed until craggy lumps form, scraping down sides of bowl occasionally. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating until each one is mixed in properly then beat in the sugar. Increase the speed to medium and mix until the dough is smooth which takes about 3 minutes. ● Reduce speed back to low and add the butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until blended after each addition, until the dough is soft and silky. Increase speed to mediumhigh and beat until the dough pulls away from
sides of bowl and sticks to the paddle. ● Lightly butter large bowl then put the mixture into it. Cover bowl with clingfilm and let the dough rise in a warm draughtfree area until almost doubled in volume, This takes about 1 1/2 hours. ● Gently deflate the dough by lifting around edges, then letting it fall back into bowl. Re-cover bowl tightly with clingfilm and chill, again deflating the dough every 30 minutes until it stops rising. Chill overnight then use the dough to make 12 large, or 6 small brioches and 1 tart, or 2 tarts. ● Butter 12 standard muffin cases. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces; cut each piece into thirds. Roll each small piece between palms into ball. Place 3 balls in each prepared case until the dough fills it then
lay a sheet of baking parchment over it. Put the muffin pan in a warm draught-free area. Let dough rise once again until light and almost doubled or about 1/2 inch to 1 inch above top rim of muffin case. This takes about an hour. ● Position rack in centre of oven and preheat to 200°C. Place muffin pan on rimmed baking sheet. ● Gently brush egg glaze over risen dough, being careful that glaze does not drip between dough and pan as this can prevent full expansion in oven. ● Bake brioches until golden brown, covering with foil if they brown too quickly, (about 20 minutes). Transfer pan to a cooling rack and cool for 10 minutes then remove the brioches from pan. Serve warm or at room temperature. For a really delicious, and somewhat decadent variation, when you get to the stage of putting the brioche mix into the tin you can add some pieces of truffle. This is not easy to get here but you can usually find it in the Gourmet Club areas of any El Corte Ingles department store that are dotted all along the coast. Serve sliced in half with butter for a mouth melting snack.

Cinnamon Without going into the whole scientific explanation of why it works, adding ¼ to 1 teaspoon of this spice to something you eat every day - hot cereal, marinades, yogurt - helps blood sugar get into cells to be used for energy, so less is stored as fat.
The battle against mosquitoes is more often than not fought with chemical repellents which are effective, but toxic, smelly and irritating. because it prevents them from landing on you, like a windstorm keeping a plane from its descent. But there is more to a fan than that. A fan dilutes and disperses the carbon dioxide you exhale, and carbon dioxide
is one of the major chemicals that attract mosquitoes. The wind from a fan also cools you off. Sweat, lactic acid and body heat attract mosquitoes factors that a fan can help minimize. The experts
recommend using fangenerated wind as a practical means of protecting humans or pets from mosquitoes in the backyard while indoors, a fan on medium or high speed should do the job.
New take on Med diet A “typical” Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, nuts, vegetables, fish and olive oil, and low in meat and dairy products, is linked to living longer, but new research has found that some foods in the diet are more important than others in promoting good health and in adding years to your life.
Their diets were rated on a scale based on how closely they followed a
traditional Mediterranean diet. The researchers found that eating more vegetables, fruits, nuts, pulses and olive oil, not eating too much meat and drinking moderate amounts of alcohol were associated with living longer. When these foods were removed from the
rating system, the health benefits of following a Mediterranean diet were significantly reduced. Other foods such as fish, seafood, cereals and low amounts of dairy produce were found to have little effect on the overall health benefits of

the Mediterranean diet. The researchers also noted there were clear health benefits to be had in combining several of the key foods of the diet, for example eating high amounts of vegetables and olive oil.
Chili PePPers Found in high quantities in hot salsa as well as in many Thai, Indian, and Chinese curry dishes, these wonder foods are packed with a metabolism-boosting compound called capsaicin, which provides chili peppers' fiery flavour. In addition, capsaicin increases your body temperature somewhat, giving your metabolism an extra calorie-burning push. ChiCken and fish It actually takes energy to digest food, and your body burns more calories digesting and metabolizing protein than it does while breaking down carbs and fats. Consuming a few servings of lean protein, such as chicken, fish, and tofu, each day may help keep your metabolism revving away long after you finish eating your meal.

Excess weight impairs brain Carrying excess weight anywhere appears to impair older women's brains, but carrying it on the hips may make matters worse. In a study of 8,745 post-menopausal women aged 65 to 79, of whom twothirds were overweight or obese, US researchers found "apple-shaped" women fared better than "pears" on cognitive tests. Some of the health risks associated with obesity, such as vascular disease
Green Tea One ingredient, caffeine, is a stimulant that raises your heart rate and compels your system to burn calories faster. Plus, green tea has catechins, substances that some experts believe help burn belly fat. They recommend three 8-ounce cups a day.
Coffee Again, the caffeine kicks your metabolism into high gear. Caffeine also jump-starts lipolysis, the breakdown of fat. One to two cups a day is ideal.

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health questioned more than 23,000 Greek men and women on diet and lifestyle over a period eight and a half years.

and inflammation, may explain why people who are overweight appear to be at higher risk of dementia. However, the latest study suggests a bit of extra fat around the waist may actually protect brain functioning because belly fat seems to make more of the female hormone oestrogen that naturally dips after the menopause. Oestrogen is thought to help protect the brain from cognitive decline. Scientists
already know different kinds of fat release different hormones with varying effects. The US team said it was important to find out if one kind of fat is more detrimental than the other, and how it affects brain function. The Alzheimer's Research Trust said that although the study doesn't explain fully the link between body shape and brain function, it surely makes the case for watching the scales.

Flying car cleared for take-off Designed to soar above traffic jams, but grounded by paperwork. But now, finally, the flying car has been officially cleared to take to the skies. The sticking point had been the weight of the Terrafugia Transition - it was 110lb over the limit for light aircraft. But U.S. aviation authorities have given it a special exemption because the vehicle is also required to comply with car safety regulations.
Pedrosa win no 2
as Rossi just misses out inside Lorenzo into turn one at the start of lap nine.It didn't work, he ran and wide Lorenzo regained the advantage, but he perfected the move next time around and then inched away from the Fiat Yamaha rider to claim a 3.355sec victory.
Dani Pedrosa took his second victory of the 2010 season after a restarted German GP at Sachsenring The Repsol Honda rider had been a close second to world championship leader Jorge Lorenzo when the race was stopped on lap ten of 27, after a circuit blocking accident involving Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda), Aleix Espargaro (Pramac Ducati) and Alvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki). de Puniet was subsequently diagnosed with a broken left leg, and all three were unable to make the restart as rules require a
rider to be back in the pits, with their bike, within five minutes of the red flag. As he had in the first start, Lorenzo passed Pedrosa into the penultimate

left-hand turn at the bottom of the hill, on lap two, but couldn't shake-off the RCV rider.
The pair gradually broke clear of the field and Pedrosa became ever more threatening until he dived
Pedrosa, who began the race 52 points behind Lorenzo, is now 47 points behind heading into next weekend's US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. Rossi, making a surprise return
to race action just six weeks after a broken leg compared with the five months predicted by doctors for a full recovery slowly gained ground on Stoner and made the first of many attempts to claim a comeback podium on lap 13. Rossi and Stoner remained locked together for the rest of the race, passing and re-passing each other until Stoner stung Rossi with a blockpass into the last corner, on the very last lap. It must have been especially frustrating for Rossi, since he lost the 2003 race at the exact same turn to Sete Gibernau.
Ruling is due on motorbike parking fees A ruling on a £1-a-day parking fee introduced for motorcyclists in central London is due next Monday at the High Court
The Vauxhall Corsa becomes the first Vauxhall to utilise Start/Stop technology, in a bid to reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel consumption. The addition of Stop/Start technology means the Euro 5-compliant 1.3 CDTi Vauxhall Corsa ecoFLEX will deliver 70.6mpg on a combined cycle – an improvement of more than seven per cent on the nonStop/Start-equipped models. The package also includes a high performance battery and Electric Power Management System and an additional water pump that keeps the cabin warm in cold weather. Owners will have the ability to turn off the Start/Stop function altogether via a dashboardmounted button. The price of the package takes the price of the ecoFLEX badged Vauxhall Corsa up by £260. Start/Stop is also available in S and SXi trim levels.
Start/Stop technology automatically stops the engine when the driver engages neutral and releases the clutch pedal. It is designed to come into action at traffic lights or at a level crossing when the engine is idling and is essentially wasting fuel and emitting excess CO2. When ready to drive away, the driver presses the clutch pedal (which will restart the engine) and engage first gear. When utilised in urban areas where traffic levels are usually high, drivers have reported gains in fuel consumption of between five and ten percent. Proving that Start/Stop technology isn’t just for smaller, ecoconscious cars, Porsche fitted it in the V8-equipped Panamera saloon. It has been suggested that this move was to lower overall emissions to comply with EU regulations.
For motorcyclists, who are already facing rising fuel prices and motorbike insurance premiums the fee represents a significant increase in costs. Campaign chairman Warren Djanogly claims the orders, which came

into force in January, are invalid because they have no traffic management benefit. He also accuses the council of acting outside its powers. The orders impose a £1charge for motorcyclists, other than for residential permit holders. Alternatively, motorcyclists can pay £3.50 a week, £13.50 a month, £33.50 for three calendar months, or £100 a year. Councillor Lee Rowley, Westminster's

Cole: Liverpool’s lucky Number 7 Joe Cole flew out to join his new Liverpool team-mates at their training base in Switzerland on Monday after agreeing an £80,000-a-week deal and was handed the club's coveted No 7 shirt by boss Roy Hodgson. Others who have worn the No 7 shirt include Anfield legends Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish. He has joined the five-time European champions after Yossi Benayoun headed in the opposite direction to Stamford Bridge.
XIV Trophy Feria La Cala de Mijas The 14th Feria La Cala de Mijas trophy played on Sunday, July 18th was a big success with more than 90 players taking part, resulting in some good scoring. And this was achieved on slope adjusted handicaps. The competition was divided into three sections. The scratch to 11.4 handicap section went to German resident on the Costa del Sol Helmut Brune, with 41 points, while the 11.5 to 18.4 section was won by José Guerrero Amador with 38 points. The 18.5 to 36.4 handicap section went to Javier Sierra Sanchez with 41 points. Last year s overall winner, Liam Power, didn t manage to repeat the victory but scored 35 points and managed the 4th position. The competition was sponsored by the Mijas Town Hall and the presentation of prizes was performed by the organiser of the event,

Cala de Mijas, to be held between July 27th and August 1st. In general the participants commented on the excellent lunch and generosity of the sponsor, Mijas Town Hall, who
provided a fantastic range of prizes. The big surprise was for Javier Sierra Sanchez from Madrid who has been visiting the area for the last three years for holidays. Last year he participated in this competition for the first time. He enjoyed the resort and the friendliness of the many local participants and decided to repeat it. As being the player with the best score made by a Spaniard, he qualified automatically for the national final of the World Golfers Championship, to be played at the course in August this year. He now has the opportunity to end up playing for Spain at the World Golfers Championship Finals in Thailand.
Monty’s helpers Colin Montgomerie has named Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley as his Ryder Cup vice-captains. McGinley and Bjorn were expected to be in the Scot's back-up staff for the match at Celtic Manor, while Clarke is something of a surprise. But the 41-year-old Ulsterman, hero of the 2006 victory only a month after his wife Heather died of breast cancer, has agreed to come on board. Montgomerie and Clarke
were team-mates in five matches, winning four of them. Clarke's first game at Valderrama in 1997 was with the Scot as his fourball partner and they beat Fred Couples and Davis Love on the last. It was thought Montgomerie might decide to go for a Welshman - Phillip Price was the most likely candidate - but instead he has increased the Irish presence.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again Another scorching day last Saturday saw 28 players turn up at Santa Maria for this month’s outing for the C.O.G.S.. Always a pleasant place to play, this lovely course was in first-rate condition for our day out and the scores reflected this. Leading the way with a fantastic 41 points were Ian Brewer and Chris Spoakes with Ian winning on countback 21 to 19. In third place with 38 points was Martin Randall, a score that would win most month’s outings. Nearest the pin on the tenth hole was Terry Birtles while nearest in two shots at the fourth was Dave Haworth. The longest drive at the eleventh hole was won in emphatic style by Mark Edmondson, who was only a couple of yards from the green. The team prize was won by Terry Birtles, Ian Brewer, Mark Edmondson and Ollie O’Brien with a fantastic total of 125 points. In the separate par three competition the nearest the pins were won by David Dryden at the seventh, Ian Holden at the twelfth, myself at the fifteenth and Joe King at the seventeenth while the prize for the best scores on the par threes was shared by Ian Brewer and Terry Birtles. The 150th anniversary Open Championship was won in convincing style by the young man who won the Open de Andalucia at the Parador Club in Malaga, Louis Oosthuizen. His winning margin was an incredible seven shots from the always consistent Lee Westwood who has now finished in the top three in four of the last five majors . Until next time. Keep your head down Dave.
Oosthuizen defies the weather Twenty nine British Opens have been played at the Old Course and this ranks up there with the best, and proves that it is exactly what it says on the label, ”The Open”. Rank outsider Louis Oosthuizen has won the British Open, capturing golf's biggest prize by a stunning seven strokes with an accomplished display of front-running. It was the biggest winning margin in the world's oldest and most prestigious tournament since Tiger Woods won here by eight strokes in 2000. The 27-year-old South African, a 200-1 betting shot on Wednesday, started the day on 15-under par, four strokes ahead of England's Paul Casey and with the rest of the field already left trailing in his wake. Plotting his way around the Old Course links, Oosthuizen was never really threatened as he carded a closing 71 for a 16-under total of 272. “It's unbelievable,” said Oosthuizen. “It was difficult having such a big lead to keep calm and focussed, but

Rory McIlroy, the precocious young Ulsterman who opened with starkly contrasting rounds of 63 and 80, finished strongly with a 68 which left him tied for third. “I couldn't help but think about Friday (80) going up the last hole there,” he said. “If I had just sort of stuck in a little bit more on Friday and held it together more, it could have been a different story.”
Alberto Contador has apologised for taking advantage of rival Andy Schleck's mechanical problem to seize the Tour de France race leader's yellow jersey. The 27year-old Spaniard surged ahead after Schleck's chain slipped on yesterday's 187.5-kilometre 15th stage to take an eight-second lead in the race for the maillot jaune. Contador defied usual convention - when the rider in the yellow jersey is afflicted with a mechanical problem normal etiquette is to not attack.

Drogba claims are rubbished Manchester City have rubbished claims by Didier Drogba's agent that the club have been in contact about signing the Chelsea striker. Thierno Seydi suggested in a radio interview that Drogba could leave Stamford Bridge before the transfer deadline and said there had already been dialogue with City. Yet City, who have spent around £60million on Jerome Boateng, David Silva and Yaya Toure this summer, insist there is no truth in Seydi's remarks.

“Louis has obviously played great and thoroughly deserves to win. So there's not even any real disappointment.
Casey also paid tribute to the South African, who only went in one of St Andrews' many bunkers all week. “That was an unbelievable performance,” he said. “He was very calm, played wonderful golf, and all credit to him. I'm
disappointed, but the emphasis has to be on his performance, because that was fantastic.”

Lee Westwood eventually passed a fading Casey for the runner-up slot making it four top-three finishes in the last five majors. “Whether I won the tournament today was in the hands of other people,” the European number one said.
