Flood victims stranded
By Kym Wickham
In Swat, where thousands are still rebuilding after a major military operation against Taliban rebels during 2009, the flooding has brought down bridges and left communities cut off.
k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
this week we have one of our nephews from Australia turning up with his two mates. they're all 19-years-old and there seems to be a vast difference in attitudes to life at that age so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these will be the more mature ones. I haven't seen Callum since he was 11-years-old so I have no idea what to expect. Bedlam will probably be reigning in my house by the time you read this and I may already have moved out and into a hotel. I'm sure all will be fine and we'll spend many happy hours round the pool barbecuing but if you see some dazed mad woman wandering about – it'll probably be me so please parcel me up and send me home. Last Saturday a few of us from the office went to La Risa's second Birthday Party. there was a huge hog roast with everything to go with it, Rob Davey doing the entertainment – he's always good – and to finish off, a delicious cupcake – one each – with a candle in the top – Yummy. Not good for the diet but a blow out now and again is good for me …. honest! Also, why not click to sign up to our monthly newsletter to keep in touch with what's happening. Go to www.thenewsonline.es then click on the box just under the virtual paper on the right hand side of the front page. have a look at the paper online – it's great! Chalk this up as a first – nothing moaned about this week!
Survivors return home The two Spaniards who survived after a boat carrying them and four other Spanish tourists capsized on a flooded river in Mexico last week arrived at Barcelona El Prat airport on Monday. Aina Frau and Bernat Palau refused to speak to the press and were hurried to the waiting room where their families waited for them. The bodies of Irene Carbo Xifre and sisters Nuria and Neus Terrades Trias have been recovered from the river. One was
found near the scene of the tragedy while the other had been swept 60 kms downstream. At press time, the body of Francisco Espasa has still to be found. Members of the tourist party who refused to try to cross the swollen river said the six Spaniards
did not have lifebelts. They also said the guide abandoned the boat carrying them when he realised how dangerous the river was. He and the owner of the boat have been jailed for ignoring an official warning not to attempt to cross the river.
Spanish frigate thwarts pirates The Spanish frigate Victoria thwarted an attempt by Somali pirates to board a Norwegian ship in the Gulf of Eden on Monday. The MV Bow Saga had transmitted a message
that morning saying a skiff with seven pirates on board was sailing in the security zone marked out by the EU mission that patrols the waters off Somalia. The Victoria and
one of its helicopters fired on the skiff as it approached the Bow Saga. The pirates attempted to flee but were captured by soldiers sent from the frigate.

One medical student told reporters: "The civil administration is totally zero in helping. There are no aid agencies here at the moment, even though 25 bridges have been swept away. These are the metal bridges for carrying transport." The flooding would be a challenge in any country, but is a growing crisis for a country like Pakistan, already suffering economic woes and a Taliban insurgency. A spokesman for the disaster management authority in the worstaffected province, Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, said: "The entire infrastructure we built in the last 50 years has been destroyed." The return of monsoon rains has grounded helicopters and raised fears of renewed flooding. The army had hoped that the initial rescue operation could be over in 10 days,

but says rebuilding the damaged areas could take more than six months. The Pakistani military has committed 30,000 troops and dozens of helicopters to the relief effort, but winching individuals to safety is a slow process. There are reports that Islamist groups, some accused of having links to the Taliban, have been providing aid to many of the victims. Aid agencies have warned that the risk of water-borne diseases spreading will remain high until the floodwaters fully recede. There are already reports of cholera emerging in the Swat Valley. Dr Ahmed Farah Shadoul, the World Health Organization's acting head in Pakistan, told reporters it was essential to act against the spread of a number of infections, including diarrhoeal diseases, skin problems, eye problems, malaria and fevers, and measles. Governments around the world have pledged millions of dollars in aid, but there has been no decision yet on whether to launch a global appeal for aid.

Passions run high over bullfighting ban Pro- and anti-bullfight groups clashed outside Barcelona's La Monumental bullring on Saturday ahead of the first corrida to be held there since the Catalan regional government's ban of the “national fiesta” last Wednesday. The ban has aroused high passions and has been followed closely by the international press, which were mainly in favour. However, The Economist called Catalonia the land of prohibition. The ban will not come into effect until January 1st, 2012, and the pro-bullfighters, including toreros, bull breeders and the 200,000 people who are
employed in the sector have threatened to do everything in their power to have the ban overturned. Their only consolation is that none of Spain's other regions appear to be considering a ban. Bullfighting came to an end in the Canary Islands two years ago when the region introduced an animal
US drops police racism charge The US Office of Consular Affairs' web page no longer warns US tourists that Spanish policemen tend to be racist. On Tuesday, the Department of State entry dropped a paragraph that warned African Americans who want to visit Spain about the “racist prejudices” of Spanish
policemen which could “lead to their arrest”. Both the Spanish embassy and the Foreign Ministry have downplayed the matter, saying the information referred to a recent “isolated incident” involving two African American consular officials in Barcelona.
Holiday weekend road deaths up During the mass exodus from the cities to the coast the weekend of July 31stAugust 1st – the busiest one for holidaymakers – 20 people died in accidents on the roads, up from 16 for the same weekend last year. It was also higher than the most tragic weekend last
year – August 15th and 16th – when 18 people died on the roads. However, Traffic Authority figures show that there were fewer road deaths in the first seven months of this year – 936 or 180 fewer than for the same period last year.

protection law that included fighting bulls, generally excluded from similar laws in the rest of the regions. While more than 50% of Spaniards surveyed about the ban are in favour of it, a majority felt that it violated people's right to choose. As one aficionado put it: Nobody is forcing anybody to go to bullfights.

Socialists Great cut PP’s grandson speaks out lead For the first time in several months, the Socialist Party has cut the Partido Popular’s lead in votes if the general election were to be held now – by 3% but the PP is still ahead with 41% to the Socialists’ 33%. However, polls show that the PP is tipped to win the next regional election by 7% in Andalucia, a traditional Socialist stronghold, and is 23% ahead in Valencia, a traditional PP stronghold.
In a rare interview, Franco’s great grandson, Luis Alfonso de Bourbon, accused the government of trying to “erase his legacy”. He said it was unforgivable that they were removing Franco‘s statues and renaming streets that evoked memories of the regime. He went on: “Franco created the middle class, started reforesting the country, built reservoirs and roads. He also kept the country out of WWII and prevented Communism from taking root here.” Luis de Bourbon, the Duke of Anjou, comes from the side of the family that lays claim to the French throne. He is the grandson of Franco’s only daughter, and is married to Venezuelan heiress Margarita Vargas. He lives in Caracas with his wife and three children. He said his wife was learning French, to “prepare for any eventuality”.

Basque party leader warns government
Military to march against new law The association which represents the Armed Forces, AUME, has called on all men in unform to take part in a mass rally on October 16th in Madrid to protest against the new Military Career Law and demand the withdrawal of the Law of Rights and Duties. AUME president Jorge Bravo told a press conference last week that Defence Minister Carme Chacon had tried to pass off the law as modernising the armed forces when in fact it converted them into “authentic henchmen,
who don’t think, can’t talk, are deaf and dumb, have no relation to civil society and are forbidden to express an opinion”. He said it would be better if there were no law at all. He added that
members of other European armed forces planned to join the protest, which will take place four days after the traditional military march parade that marks the country’s National Day on October 12th.
Basque Nationalist Party leader Inigo Urkulla warned last week that if the Socialist Party does not make a stronger commitment to the regional government it could lead to the fall of the Zapatero government. He said the blame would lie at the door of Socialist regional premier Patxi Lopez. Sr Urkulla claimed Sr Lopez has kept the list of economic powers pending transfer to the regional government “locked up in his desk drawer” and that
the PM also had a copy on his desk in Madrid. Sr Urkulla said: “I would never have believed that the lehendakari (premier) of this region would refuse to increase the Basque country’s capacity for selfgovernment.” In the last regional election, Sr Lopez formed an alliance with the Partido Popular to prevent the PNV from continuing in power, as it had since the Basque country became an autonomous region 29 years ago.
Judge orders capture of US soldiers National Court judge Santiago Pedraz last week ordered the search for and capture of the three US soldiers accused of killing TV cameraman Jose Couso on April 8th, 2003, during the battle for Baghdad. Lt Col Philip Camp, Capt Philip Wolford and Sgt Thomas Gibson were among the US forces that fired on the Hotel
Palestina where Couso and other press people were staying. The men claimed they were returning sniper fire that came from the hotel and the US government has said they are not guilty of any crime. Judge Pedraz has asked for permission to go to Iraq in October and November to investigate the matter “on the ground”.
Survey 80% against regions While the regions continue to claim more powers for themselves from the central government, the latest survey by the Centre of Sociological Research shows that 80% of Spaniards are against it. They consider that the regional governments spend too much money, have vastly inflated the public worker sector and are very inefficient. They also blame some of the regional governments, especially those of Catalonia and the Basque Country, for fomenting separatism and the breakup of Spain. Despite this, more than 95% of PP voters and 89% of Socialist voters said they are proud of being Spanish. Meanwhile, only 30% of people who voted for the moderate Catalan nationalist party, Convergencia e Union, felt proud of being Spanish and preferred to call Spain a “state” rather than a country.

Most hated, most loved A survey published in last Sunday’s magazine section of the El Mundo national paper shows that the most hated man in Spain is Josep Lluis Carod-Rovira, the deputy premier of the Catalan regional government and a radical nationalist whose avowed aim is Catalan independence. Second on the hate list is Belen Esteben – a woman whose only claim to fame is that she had a child with bullfighter Joselin 13 years ago. Joselin dropped her not long after their daughter was born and since then her regular eruptions of rage – and legal actions - against the bullfighter have made her a fixture on several socalled “rose” programmes on television which do nothing but dredge through the latest gossip about the stars. She is said to earn around €23,000 a month for her contributions. Third is Leire Pajin – the Socialist Party’s organization secretary who faces the press daily to make damning statements about the main opposition party, the Partido Popular. When Barak Obama was elected president, she claimed a new era for humanity had dawned, predicting that
Obama and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero between them would change the world. Next on the list is Joan Laporta – president of Barcelona football club until just two months ago who spent his years in the limelight stirring up hatred against all things Spanish. And last but not least is the prime minister himself. Sports personalities dominate the most loved list, with Rafa Nadal leading the field, followed closely by national team captain and Real Madrid goalie Iker Casillas. Number three is basketball star Pau Gasol, who plays with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Numbers 4, 5 and 6 helped bring the World Cup home – Andres Iniesta, David Villa and trainer Vicente del Bosque.

Government dole Runaway car injures 13 plan extended MADRID. The government is to extend the payment of €428 a month to people whose dole eligibility has run out or have not worked long enough to qualify for the second time since introducing it last summer. So far, 570,000 unemployed people have benefited from the programme, which is aimed at helping older people and those under 30.
MADRID. Thirteen people were injured, one of them seriously, early Sunday morning when a driver lost control of his car and ran them down in a crowded street near the city's popular flea market. The car damaged three stalls before ending up wrapped round a lamp post. Police said the 50-year-old driver had apparently been overcome by dizziness.

MADRID. A survey carried out by El Pais national daily shows that just over half those questioned think the Spanish military presence in Afghanistan is no longer necessary, with more younger than older people saying the troops should stay on. However, more than 70% believe the Spanish army should participate in overseas missions as a contribution to world peace.
MADRID. Interior Minister Alredo Perez Rubalcaba told reporters last week that the police forces and the Guardia Civil arrested 5,888 people - up from 3,555 the previous year and dismantled 561 criminal gangs last year. He said 462 of the gangs were engaged in drug trafficking and the rest in robbery in general and people trafficking and prostitution.

World News Sarah's Law pilot scheme to be rolled out Police are playing down fears that allowing parents to check if someone with access to their children is a sex offender may cause vigilante attacks. The scheme known as "Sarah's Law" was proposed after the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne 10 years ago. The scheme was piloted in four areas in England from September 2008 and will be expanded to the whole of England and Wales by spring. A spokesman for the NSPCC said it was good that the pilot schemes had helped protect some children, but urged the government to "tread cautiously" as it expanded the initiative. He has warned the scheme could backfire by driving
paedophiles underground. But Chief Constable Paul West of the Association of Chief Police Officers said people would not need to share the information as police would inform any affected party: "The point is, we don't go for widespread public disclosure to anybody and everybody because that's just the sort of thing that leads to the vigilantism which we've seen in the
past." Home Secretary Theresa May said the expansion of the scheme was an "important step forward for child protection" which would also help police manage known sex offenders more effectively. Sarah Payne's mother, Sara, was made the government's Victims' Champion after her campaign to bring in the measures.

Tokyo's Pope's UK trip mementos on sale 'oldest Official merchandise and commemorative memorabilia to celebrate the Pope's visit to Britain have gone on sale. Souvenirs include papal flags, prayer cards, candles, rosary beads, plates, jackets and key-rings. T-shirts, which range from £15 to £20, include a beatification T-shirt with a retro-style picture of John Henry Newman and a black-andwhite Pope Benedict T-shirt which features the Pontiff in profile. Baseball caps cost £15, mugs are going for £8-£10 and a Swarovski bracelet will sell for £30. The first official Papal visit to the UK has caused controversy because of the cost and the scandal surrounding child abuse within the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II made a purely pastoral visit in 1982, but Pope Benedict
XVI's trip will combine both pastoral events and formal state business. On September 16th the Pope will meet the Queen at Holyrood House in Edinburgh. A mass to beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman, who died in 1890, will take place on September 19th at Cofton Park on the outskirts of Birmingham. During the visit, the Pope will also address representatives from the worlds of politics, culture and businessin London and make a public appearance in The Mall. The cost of the visit could rise to £12m, up to £4m more than previous figures. The trip will also cost the Catholic Church £7m.
woman' missing
Japanese officials have discovered that Tokyo's reputed oldest woman has been missing for decades. They were checking up on her after the city's supposed oldest man was found to have died more than 30 years ago. Fusa Furuya, aged 113, was registered as living with her daughter but had not seen her her since the 1980s. The daughter registered her mother as living with her, and kept paying her health insurance, just in case. Efforts are now under way to trace Mrs Furuya's son to find out if she is living with him. There are more than 40,000 centenarians in Japan according to official data, but the discoveries have cast doubt on the accuracy of the figures.

Deficit 'most urgent issue' David Cameron and Nick Clegg have written a joint letter to cabinet colleagues reminding them that reducing the deficit is the "most urgent issue facing Britain". However, the Prime Minister and his deputy have also said that proposals to promote economic growth will be treated favourably in the departmental spending review. Ministers are currently negotiating with the Treasury over the scale of the cuts, amid tensions over defence spending and welfare reform. Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg's letter said the government's purpose can
be summed up in one sentence: "To put power in the hands of communities and individuals, and to equip Britain for long term success." Because of a fear in government that the coalition was in danger of being defined solely by its emphasis on cuts, Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg were encouraging ministers to talk more about political purpose. Welfare reform, greater support for children and
investment in infrastructure are also mentioned as government "priorities". In the letter, Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg thanked cabinet colleagues for their commitment during an "intense and at times tough" first 12 weeks of the coalition. They said there would be a "radical redistribution of power from government to communities and people, to reverse decades of over-
centralisation. The importance of this approach cannot be overstated. It underpins our attitude to public service reform. It animates our plans for genuine localism." They said the government, "unlike previous governments, will govern for the long term" which was “why we are prepared to take the difficult decisions necessary to equip Britain for long-term success.”
Ahmadinejad wants debate with Obama In a televised speech to expatriate Iranians, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he was “ready to sit down with Mr Obama face-to-face and put the global issues on the table, man-to-man, freely, and in front of the media and see whose solutions are better." Mr Ahmadinejad plans to attend the UN General Assembly next month. The White House has yet to
respond to the challenge but has previously declined similar offers. The Iranian leader, who maintains that US policy favours its rival, Israel, said that former US President George W Bush had never taken up Iran's offer because he was "scared". The US has not had direct diplomatic ties with Iran for more than 30 years. The move comes after fresh sanctions by the
international community over Iran's nuclear programme. The US and its allies accuse Tehran of

Everglades on Facebook catches Unesco danger list drivers NEW YORK. Unesco's World Heritage Committee has added Florida's Everglades National Park and Madagascar's tropical rainforest to a list of world heritage sites at risk. It said development in the Everglades had caused water flow to fall 60% in the wetland, while illegal logging and poaching following last year's military coup has meanwhile imperilled Madagascar's rainforests.
NEW DELHI, INDIA. The city’s overburdened traffic police officers have enlisted an unexpected weapon in the fight against dangerous driving: Facebook. Since they opened the page two months ago, Delhi Traffic Police have issued 665 tickets, using the licence plate numbers shown in some 3,000 photos from digital informers to track vehicle owners. Some 17,000 people are already fans of the page.

The 39-year-old man, identified only by his nickname El Gordo (Fatman) told a judge that he arrived in Spain on July 8th and went to Cadiz to stay with friends, who asked him to take some money back to Poland.
When he refused, they threatened him and he finally accepted €24,000 from them. The money disappeared and his friends refused to believe him when he said it had been stolen. Three Poles and a German then held
him for seven days, beating him and burning him with cigarettes and injecting him with the socalled truth drug. It was the Polish police who raised the alarm. They had been tracking a criminal gang to which one of the
No end to fishermen's nightmare The nightmare of Jorge Cano Sanchez, 47, his 16year-old son David and Juan José Ramirez Ruiz, 26, who had set out from Algeciras on June 5th for a peaceful day's fishing, started when a thick fog descended as they were about to return to shore, forcing them to call the
maritime rescue service. Neither of the men were expert sailors. They had bought the boat in May and had only been out on it five times. Unfortunately for them, when the fog descended they were near the island of Perejil, an area notorious for drug smugglers. Their rescuers

As they have done for the past ten years, David Cameron and his family will be on holiday in the Ronda area from August 4th to 9th, according to a local paper. This year, instead of staying at a friend's finca, for security reasons the Camerons will have to stay at what the newspaper called a
“boutique hotel” where all the rooms have been booked for the PM's entourage. The Camerons are expected to visit friends in Gaucin and to dine at least once at Ronda's famous Tragabuches restaurant. The paper did not say if they plan to visit Michele Obama in Benahavis.

Tired of the unfair competition, shop owners and businessmen in VelezMalaga and Torre del Mar have said they intend to denounce the Ayuntamiento if it does not take action within ten days to remove unlicensed vendors and small markets from the streets. They also want action taken against impromptu street parties which give tourists a bad impression and keep residents awake till the small hours. Spokesmen for the Businessmen's Associations of Velez Malaga (ACEV) and Torre del Mar (ACET) said: “The establishments which fight to keep on the year round cannot allow themselves to be threatened by the unfair competition tolerated by this Ayuntamiento.”

Alhambra lions leave workshop The 12 most famous lions in the history of art have made their reappearance in public. The statues were removed from the Patio de los Leones in the Alhambra almost three years ago to be restored, at a cost of €1.2 million. The lions weigh between 250 and 300 kilos and were sculpted by
different artists from 1362 to 1391 by order of King Muhammad V. The restoration work turned up a small graffiti on one of the lions which has been attributed to British romantic writer and

A farcical bullfighting ban
Memo from Madrid
Martin Delfín
Writes for the English language version of El Pais
Socialist mullings in Madrid
T
“Toro embolado”
W T
hen it comes to blatant hypocrisy, the Catalans take the cake.
he very day last week the Catalan regional parliament banned bullfighting on the grounds of cruelty, in a town not too far away from Barcelona, a bull – its head lashed tightly to a stake - was bellowing in fear as a man attached iron holders to its horns and lit the flares they contained. The bull was then set loose to run round the boardedoff streets of the town until its residents grew tired of the spectacle. At least that's the way it is supposed to end, with the bull being sent back to its home ranch the following day “to spend the rest of its life in peace”. However, a lot of the bulls are beaten so badly in the process by drunken men and youths that they have to be put out of their misery.
K
nown as “toro embolado”, this is a good old “cultural” Catalan custom which goes back centuries, while the bullfight is the sort of cruel, barbarous spectacle that only those evil Spaniards could invent. Local legend has it that the custom grew out of the fact that there was no electricity in the bad old days so they used the bulls to light the streets! What a load of old codswallop, or perhaps b******t would be a more appropriate word.
W
hile the Catalans insisted the ban was not “anti-Spanish” bullfighting is after all called the national fiesta – there was a spate of articles in the national press, accusing them of just that. The toro embolado is just one example of the Catalans' abhorrence of cruelty to animals. Another is the running of young bulls when more often than not the animals end up like that heifer in Alhaurin el Grande not so long ago.
A
fter wading through several articles about the Spanish obsession with inflicting pain on fighting bulls – which in my opinion are one of the most magnificent creatures in God's creation – I had planned to reveal
all the gory details to our readers. I have since decided to spare you all the mental and emotional agony that I went through. But I will give you a statistic I gleaned from a blog by Alfonso Valencia in the online newspaper SocioPolitico.com titled Spanish bulls fear the arrival of summer.
A
ccording to figures published by the National Association for the Protection and Wellbeing of Animals, some 60,000 bulls and cows are killed each year – in the bull ring, and in small towns and villages all over Spain. A bull suffers for 20 minutes or so in the ring, but the poor beasts who are unfortunate enough to end up as the main entertainment in small village ferias suffer for hours before somebody puts them out of their misery or they drop dead of sheer exhaustion. And according to Sr Valencia, such spectacles are on the increase rather than dying out.
he elections are still a year away but the battle for Madrid has begun among the PSOE rank and file. The question is: who is going to be given the task to try to unseat the Popular Party’s regional premier Esperanza Aguirre? Since 2007 when he won the post of secretary general of the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM), Tomás Gómez has made it more than clear that he believes the nomination is his. Gomez´s adamant stance has forced some Socialist leaders, who don’t want him, to quietly try to convince him to step aside because Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has made up his own mind. Trinidad Jiménez, the health minister and one of the more popular figures inside and outside the party, appears well on her way of becoming the Socialist candidate in the regional elections next May.
S
till, no candidate has yet to be selected but the noises over the proposed choices have grown louder over the past few week. A few behind-the-scenes meetings have been held among party leaders trying to head off an internal battle for the nomination. PSOE president Manuel Chaves spoke with Gómez on July 15th to let him know that the polls just don’t favour him. Chaves, a Socialist powerbroker, didn’t come out and say it but he let it be known that the prime minister has someone else on his list. Publicly, Gómez has said that if someone else wants to run for the PSOE nomination then there must be a primary. This hasn’t set well with the Socialists, especially Zapatero who told the party leadership on July 26th that the candidate for the regional elections won’t be announced until September in order to let things cool down.
I
I'll be providing full details as soon as the petition is up and running.
W A
nd it gives me great satisfaction to know that Catalan deputy regional premier Jose Luis Carod Rivera no doubt a great fan of those “cultural events” - is the most hated man in Spain.
T
he prime minister has every obligation to support the woman who helped him get to where he is today. The 47-year-old Málaga native was one of the founders of Nuevo Vía (New way), which in 2003 helped Zapatero win the PSOE leadership. She served as a councillor in Madrid and secretary of state for Ibero-American affairs for three years before she was given the job as Health minister in 2009. According to polls, her popularity grew following last winter’s pandemonium over the swine flu epidemic; it was Jiménez who calmed the country’s fears and ensured there were enough vaccines to go around. She remains one of the top four PSOE national leaders most admired by party supporters.
B
ut Gómez’s own popularity isn’t lagging. Born in the Netherlands to Spanish emigrants, the 42-year-old politician served as mayor of the Madrid suburb of Parla from 1999-2008. He has garnered the title of the most voted for mayor in Spain, capturing more than 73 percent of the popular vote during his two re-elections in 2003 and 2007. He stepped down as mayor to assume the PSM leadership. Gómez, who is said to have the support of the Socialist mayors who serve in the Madrid suburbs, hasn’t said what he will do following Zapatero’s comments. At press time, he had not made any statements about Zapatero’s public assessments and it is expected he will meet with the prime minister before announcing his decision on whether to step aside or wage an internal struggle.
A
t is to be hoped that the ban will turn the spotlight on the treatment of fighting bulls everywhere and not just in the bullring. Here at The News, we're working on an online petition to be sent to all the major international animal protection societies, foreign newspapers, the national press and the Spanish government in an effort to set the ball rolling towards an eventual ban on all spectacles involving live animals. As Marie Antoinette would have said: Let them use humans.
hile I don't want to appear heartless, I couldn't help muttering “Serves you right” when I read about a man being gored to death by a bull at one of those village “cultural events” in Catalonia – just two days after the ban was voted in.
Zapatero with a gleam in his eye. He said that he also favoured Jaime Lissavetzky, the secretary of state for sports, to run against Madrid ’s popular Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón of the PP.
Trinidad Jimenez
B
ut after El País broke the story that Zapatero had already made his choice and with Gomez’s ceaseless insistence that the job is his, Zapatero was forced last Monday to publicly offer his assessments. “I hold Tomás Gómez – whom I have an admirable relationship – in good standing because of the fine job he has done for the party in Madrid . I hold Trinidad Jiménez in good, excellent standing because of the marvellous job she has done as Health minister, which has given me great satisfaction,” said
ll inside bickering aside, the Socialists know that they have an uphill battle to try to wrest control of the regional and city governments from the PP. Mayor Ruiz-Gallardón enjoys immense popularity among his constituents, including many Socialists who have valued his work in running an efficient capital. Aguirre, on the other hand, has had her hands filled with controversy. Her administration was plagued by a political spy scandal and her off-the-wall, sometimes vulgar, comments about her rivals have raised a few eyebrows. Still, she has the support of PP militants, but those who don’t side with her want her out of office, the polls show.
T
raditionally, Madrid is a PP town where the Socialists are in meagre position. Zapatero said he wants to try to change the way things are run in the capital and has placed the Madrid race as the party’s biggest election goal in 2011. But before then, he is going to have to calm the bitterness over the selection of candidates and head off internal strife that could divide the PSOE and make him a loser.

by email Well written Wickham's World on page two column to-day (28th July 2010) ....it is incredible isn't it the attitude of the Policia Local after all the publicity and experiences during these hot months with fires. You are right, next time photograph and present it to the Guardia. I had a similar experience today. Near where we live a well behaved guy lives in the woods ( he made himself a little "casa") and he is wonderful with animals. He has stray dogs and a cat and works when he can. Some of us help him with the dog and cat expenses, clothing, food etc., The police came
today when he was not there and pulled down the "casa" - it was only plastic sheeting - and threw that and all his belongings into a skip, including his clothes, dogfood etc., Everything he had. My daughter tried to get the dog that was there to follow her and the police said they had no problem with the guy but a complaint had been made that his dog barked at people taking their dogs for a walk. I felt the same as you.....with everything going on why are the police wasting time on something like this and in fact the woods belong to a private owner so the other
people walking the dogs have no right there. It has caused chaos for this man and his animals and then in turn to those of us who care about him and them. When some yobs started a fire in the woods last year he in fact telephoned the police and alerted them so in effect helped keep it safe. Oh, for a win on the lottery and we would buy him some land and a caravan!!

The Scorpion King As we move through the year, the winter constellations make way for a whole new view of the night sky and we get to see the summer constellations.
Editor replies: Sometimes I seriously wonder about people and their motives and there seems to be more of their type here than anywhere else - other than France that is!
Nicola Barrett Marbella Thank you so much for printing the letter last week, and your comments about what on earth should larger sized children wear when noone caters for them.
I have been “overweight” all my life and it was a real struggle when I was a child having to wear cut-down grown-ups clothes as nobody else did anything for us. I was always being
teased by the other kids and being called names. Oh, how I wish M&S had had a range of similar clothes when I was younger. Well done The News and M&S!
SOUTH Now, I don’t think that many of the constellations look very much like what they are supposed to represent but now and then one of them appears that really does look like its namesake. One of these cannot be fully seen from the UK and until I moved to Spain I had never really seen it properly. But at this time of year and at this Southerly latitude Scorpio the Scorpion is dominating the southern part of the sky and I’ve got to admit, the star pattern really does look like a huge Scorpion climbing up the sky. If you want to find it, go outside after dark and make sure you have a clear view of the southern horizon. Now move slightly upward and you will see a bright, red coloured star called Antares. Antares makes up the red eye of the scorpion, above and slightly to the right is the head of the scorpion with its two pincers either side of the head. Now follow the head star back down through Antares and continue following the line of stars that point down to the
horizon and you will see that before they reach the horizon they curve up to the left and even form the scorpion’s sting. Now it is quite a big constellation, it covers a large part of the southern sky. But once you have found it you will be surprised at how much it really does look like a scorpion! According to Greek mythology, Scorpio was sent by the Goddess Hera to kill the hunter Orion after he had boasted that he could kill any animal in the forest. The scorpion crawled unseen up to Orion and stung him in the ankle. Orion and Scorpio were then placed on opposite sides of the heavens and never appear in the sky together lest the battle continues. Don’t you just love these Greek stories? But there is a sad story attached to this constellation. Antares, the giant red star is over 600 light years from us and is truly a giant. It is over 700 times bigger than our Sun. If it was placed in the centre of our solar system then its outer edge would
be between Mars and Jupiter. If there ever were any habitable planets orbiting Antares then they were long ago swallowed up as it expanded. Antares is a dying star. It has used up all of its fuel of hydrogen and is becoming a super red giant. Eventually it will explode into a cataclysmic supernova. As it is 600 light years from us then this may already have happened and we are simply waiting for the light to reach us. Don’t forget you can still join us at the top of Benalmadena Mountain every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the end of August in our open air planetarium. Ride the cable car from Tivoli World right to the very top and you will find us there with giant telescopes and laser beams showing you the night sky. Shows start at 10.00pm. Travelling with a minor As lots of our readers will be popping back over to the UK, some with their grandchildren you may be interested to know of an incident that happened to one gran recently.
Recently, Doña Angeles Munuz of Marbella and the Mayor of Batumi in Georgia officially signed a protocol agreement for the twinning of these 2 beautiful cities.

A lady who pops in most weeks to pick up her copy of The News told us that she had recently been back to the UK arriving via London Gatwick. Her granddaughter, who is 15 years old, was asked if she was travelling alone and our reader was told she had to have written permission from the child’s parents. The UK Border Agency has a statutory duty to safeguard children entering the UK, under the terms of Section 55 of the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009 states as follows: 1.There is no mandatory
requirement for children to travel with a letter consenting to their travel, if not travelling with their parents. 2. Children arriving unaccompanied, or with a person other than their parent, will have to satisfy the Border Force Officer in relation to the child’s welfare and relationship to the person 3. UKBA encourage adults to consider travelling with verifiable documents, e.g. copies of birth certificates, or contact details for the child’s parents One can understand with so many minors disappearing but we find it astounding that her travel agent knew nothing about this so, be prepared – travel with anyone under 18 and you may be asked for a letter from their parent or guardian.

What is hydrotheraphy? part 1
This week Susan and I made a visit to VIP PET in Alhaurin. I was amazed this is not a kennels, it is a pet leisure centre. I wanted to learn about the advantages of hydrotherapy. This form of treatment is used by most vets in the UK and VIP PET have the only water therapy clinic in Spain. I met Alex and Carl who explained that hydrotherapy can be used in the treatment of arthritis, orthopedic conditions, muscle, ligament and many other types of soft tissue injury. It can also help with general convalescence.
Extensive work in human physiotherapy has demonstrated that a suitably monitored course of hydrotherapy acts by encouraging a full range of joint motion in reduced weight conditions, thus improving muscle tone and promoting tissue repair without imposing undue stress on damaged tissues. Swimming helps to improve general fitness and cardiovascular stamina, improves muscle tone and is helpful in recovering from injury or surgery and improves fitness, especially in the management of obesity. part 2 next week

A lavish concerto of palatial splendour Think of spectacular Royal palaces which should be on a "to do" list of any visitor and Versailles must be at the top. And since its opening to the public in the summer months Buckingham Palace has attracted numerous tourists. WRITTEN BY Andrea MacLean
B
ut you do not have to go to France to enjoy lavish palatial splendour. Within easy reach of Madrid, Spain has two Royal Palaces of its own which rival the splendours of the Sun King's legacy. Each in its own way offers spectacular gardens and beautifully appointed rooms, well known to Spanish visitors but still something of a hidden secret to extranjeros - but they are a secret well worth uncovering.

And it is easy to see what inspired him. Aranjuez (pictured above right)is just 30 miles south of Madrid and is the only Spanish site declared a Cultural Landscape in UNESCO'S World Heritage List.
H
ere, in this fertile valley set at the confluence of the rivers Tagus and Jarama, Phillip II created a summer palace in the 16th century, which, over three centuries, was added to and beautified. Lavish state and private rooms were created during the 18th century. There is an abundance of Baroque splendour to be found in each of the rooms - the walls and ceiling of the Chinese room are entirely covered in fine porcelain. Outside visitors wander through the English-style Flower Bed Garden and its fabulous fountain sculptures, the Island Garden and the Prince's Garden.

In spring the "strawberry train" runs from Madrid's Atocha station, carrying visitors in period carriages, served strawberries by women in period costume.
O
n the other side of Madrid, just 10 minutes from Segovia - a city famous for its Roman aqueduct, one of the world's most perfect remains of Roman engineering works - lies La Granja, the summer retreat created by Spain's first Bourbon King Felipe V. It too is set in glorious ornamental gardens containing spectacular fountain sculptures and you should plan a late afternoon visit to coincide with the fantastical show of fountains - a definite rival to anything that Versailles lays

These types of events keep everyone happy!” This is why anybody who visits the Summer Outlet at Torremolinos can come and relax, enjoy and spoil themselves a little… They can do night shopping because the event will be on the three days until 11pm, or they can relax and chill out in the Leisure section, located on the first floor of the building, which will also have the Children’s Area and the lounge and Gastronomy area. There will also be an Eco Market where a large variety of organic fruits and vegetables, food, meats and

Will the 3D bubble burst?

e A Team BY JOE CARNAHAN Starring Liam Neeson It was a TV smash 20 years ago so of course Hollywood reckons it will be a cinema remake hit now. Last week the stars turned out in style at the London premiere, leaping from the iconic van as the familiar TV theme music blared out - yep, The A team had arrived. It has had mixed reviews but make no mistake - if you want a barnstorming summer popcorn movie then this is it. Liam Neeson
stars as John "Hannibal" Smith and the film opens with him rescuing Templeton "Faceman" Peck (Bradley Cooper) from a Mexican baddie, aided by BA Baracus (Quinton "Rampage" Jackson) and "Howling Mad" Murdock (Sharlito Copley). Eighty successful missions later the team are double crossed and "sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn´t
commit". Then they break out of a military stockade.. and now you are up to speed with the familiar story. The team is bent on proving its innocence so fasten your seat belts for a bumpy fun-filled ride, with great banter bouncing around between the lead actors. So, forget the critics, grab the bag of pocorn. Of course it's not rocket science - but it IS The A Team.
This was an unexpectedly big spring time hit in the cinemas. Worthington is Perseus, who has to perform quests and battle Medusa and the Krakon if he is to save the life of Princess Andromeda. A sword and sandals epic that should keep the kids amused.
e Bounty Hunter BY ANDY TENNANT Starring Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston
Your English lawyers in Spain
The legal excellence you demand, with the high levels of servi service you expect
An action rom-com with Aniston as a journalist on the run and Gerard Butler the bounty hunter tasked with bringing her in. He just happens to be her ex husband. The two leads are attractive but a less than sparkling script meant that this was not a big hit with either critics or movie goers.

hen James Cameron’s Avatar burst onto the cinema screen in 3D it became the highest grossing film of all time. “My God,” you could hear the top studio execs exclaim, ”it’s as good as when the talkies arrived”.
suggesting that the number of cinema goers choosing the 3D format are falling. More have been opting in recent months to watch movies in their traditional - and let’s face it, cheaper -format.
A
A
nd then the stampede started. Avatar was specially designed to be in 3D - it was Cameron’s cherished project. But the rush was on to produce more movies in the cinema du jour manner - and if they were originally filmed in 2D, like Clash of The Titans for example, well, no matter, there was an easy way to “retro-fit” them - anything to cash in on the new wave of movie making and its revenue generation.

he technology exists to convert films from 2D to 3D in around four months. And the excitement caused by Avatar has led to speculation that well-loved movies like the Star Wars Trilogy, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and the Harry Potter films could come in for the retro-fit treatment. After seeing Avatar, which he loved, Star Wars director George Lucas admitted that he had not been a fan of 3D and that the technology had, in the past not been up to scratch. Hmm, hold onto that thought George before even thinking of tampering with our well loved episodes 4, 5 and 6 set in a galaxy far far away.
F
or me, if a film is well crafted, then the 2D format suits me fine - I don’t “do”fairground rides anyway. So I don’t want to feel sick and dizzy as I sit in my cinema seat, I don’t want to wear a pair of daft glasses, and I don’t want to have to pay 50 per cent more for my ticket thank you very much.
M
ind you, new figures from the States are
vatar set the bar very high. On its opening weekend in the US 71 per cent of Americans saw the 3D version. But by May the figure for Shrek Forever After was down to 61 per cent. The newly released M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender pulled in 56 per cent - which probably just shows that even 3D technology won’t save a film savaged by the critics. Mind you, it was also “retrofitted” like many others. And American critics reckon the process leaves the film looking murky so not a good job.
E
ven top Hollywood honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg has sounded a note of caution. “We are still at the beginning of this and not all 3D is equal and consumers are beginning to realise this. There have been lesser 3D movies released and there has already been a backlash against it,” he has been reported as saying.
B
y the end of this year around 22 movies will have been released in 3D and at least 24 are slated for next year. Costly cinema conversions will have to continue apace to keep up with the trend so tickets won’t be falling in price anytime soon.
S
o everyone will be paying close attention to audience figures over the coming months to see whether the 3D format is truly here to stay, or whether the bubble will burst and it will go the way of the 3D fads of the ‘50s and ‘80s.

This is not the time to go it alone Aries, with teamwork you can reach solutions, alliances and beneficial results. The key is to be open and ready for anything that comes your way, adaptable in the midst of what might seem like insurmountable obstacles. Watch that temper of yours as well, as you are easily wound up at the moment and are likely to bite someone’s head off if they dare look at you in a way that annoys you. There is a part of you that has not been able to soar with creativity, a part that has been held back or bounded in some way. These are intense times but this creates a tension that urges you to push open doors that you would otherwise leave closed. Basically it is time to let the fear go, stop worrying about what others think and allow yourself to leave a certain part of your past in the past. Taking action now will help stop the anxiety and soon you will be flying like an eagle. No matter how hard you try it is difficult to avoid or get out of the way of the unpredictable wind that is blowing. Focusing your energy will seem like a hard task when there is so much disarray in your daily life. You have been spending a lot of time self-sacrificing yourself for others, now is the time for selfpromotion. If you have not been able to receive praise easily then this is the time to embrace the words as this acceptance will help you clarify your selfworth. The hand you have been dealt is a useful spread if you are able to recognise the worth of each card. Through negotiation, exchange and quick thinking you are able to increase your chances of prosperity and luck. All luck is selfmade at the moment and this requires you to draw on your own initiative in order to make things manifest. It would be wise to keep your own counsel but be bold enough to play the game. With the sun at its height and in your own sign you are unlikely to shy away from anything. Temperatures are soaring and so is your creativity. A little sun is good for you but too much can leave you feeling drained. The key is to know when to be patient and when to stride onwards this week. Surrender is not always a sign of giving up or giving in, it is accepting that someone else may know more on the subject than you.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
We ran this scrummy recipe for Red Pepper Jelly a few weeks ago but nobody could find the Certo pectin ingredient but now I’ve found it! Apparently there has been a problem with the UK suppliers but Brit Essentials on the loop around Alhaurin el Grande has it in stock. Over the next few weeks I’ll be adding some dips to go with this.
Red Pepper Jelly Ingredients: ● ● ● ● ● ●
(serves 4)
½ pint vinegar ¼ pint lemon juice 2 red peppers, de-seeded 3lb 4oz sugar Salt and chilli powder to taste 1 bottle “Certo”
Method ● Liquidise the vinegar and lemon juice with the peppers.
● Add salt and chilli powder to taste.
● Place in a saucepan with the sugar and bring to the boil for 5 minutes.
● Leave to cool slightly then add the “Certo”.
● Pour into sterilised jars. ● It may not appear to set at first but will do when it has fully cooled. ADVERTISING FEATURE
A touch of over-indulgence creates a stir this week and it is important to keep all the forces on the field at bay so you can allow yourself movement to move freely between the opposing energies. You are in a sociable and chatty mood so be careful that you don’t put your foot in it by mistake. You may have to draw a line in the sand and create some definite boundaries to ensure that you are not taken for granted.

This is certainly a week for reconciliation when it is time to forgive and forget. Rise above the troubles and strife that may unexpectedly cause disruption when you are off guard. New hope for bone patients were able to move normally. A spokesman said it was the first time an entire joint surface was regenerated with return of functions including weight bearing and locomotion. Researchers have artificially grown a range of tissue on scaffolding using stem cells for many years, but these have been grown in laboratories. The lab-grown tissue has been quite small and has had no veins or arteries to supply them with blood. More recently, several groups of researchers have

successfully grown tissue inside animals, where blood vessels naturally form as the tissue grows. The US group is the latest to have shown that this is a promising technique - and is the first to have grown a large amount of good quality bone and cartilage into successful working joints. A spokesman for the stem cell research department at Bond University in Australia said there is technically no reason why trials should not begin on human patients, for example as an
alternative to hip replacements. But he said there were ethical issues to be considered before beginning clinical trials. If human trials were to be approved they would not be suitable for very old patients, he said, because it would take months of movement, physiotherapy and bed rest for the joint to grow which would be much too long for older people. He said they would be better off with a normal hip replacement which gives a more immediate result.

US researchers have developed a promising new technique that might one day enable doctors to regrow broken or diseased joints in patients. The team, from Columbia University Medical Centre, New York, regrew the forelimb thigh joint of rabbits using their own stem cells. The research could benefit patients with damaged hips, shoulders or knees. The researchers removed the limbs from 10 rabbits and replaced them with an artificial limbshaped skeleton. This was soaked with chemicals which attract bone and cartilage stem cells. Four weeks later the rabbits had regrown their joints and

Taking calcium supplements could increase the risk of a heart attack by as much as 30 per cent, according to a study by researchers at the universities of Auckland and Aberdeen.
They analysed the results of 11 studies involving 12,000 people who took 500mg calcium supplements or more each day. The researchers said the findings were the same for men and women and were independent of age and type of supplement given. The supplements can raise calcium levels in the blood which can lead to hardening of the arteries. Calcium supplements are prescribed to help prevent or treat osteoporosis, but the researchers said their findings suggest this should be reconsidered. But they stressed that dietary calcium appears to have little effect on heart attack risk. A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation said none of the studies used in the analysis looked specifically at the relationship between calcium supplements and the risk of heart attack. He added that anyone advised by their doctor to take calcium supplements should not stop because of this research alone.

crunch, n the leg thrusts or trunk twists. So before you spend money on fancy videos, know that the best exercise you can do for your stomach won't cost you a thing. All you need are your two feet because the best exercise is none other than walking or jogging. If you've found that your stomach is a little more flabbier than it used to be, it's likely there are other parts of your body that have unwanted weight attached. It's just that the stomach is often times the most noticeable. Your body cannot just eliminate fat in one area. So if you are trying to crunch your way to a flatter stomach without exercising the rest of your body and reducing your fat intake, you'll never see results. Start by doing cardio exercises to get that heart rate up and boost your metabolism. A good fastpaced walk or jog three times per week is a great way to accomplish this. Experts say a good cardio workout can increase your metabolism by up to 24 hours!
A Quick Metabolism Exercise Below is a sample workout that can be done to help give your metabolism a quick boost so you can burn calories. 1) Perform 30 seconds of hard exercise like running in place. 2) Perform 60 seconds of moderate exercise (casual jog or brisk walk). 3) Repeat this process 5-10 times. 4) Cool down for 3-5 minutes. Just Remember... Along with a healthy diet, walking and/or jogging is one of the best stomach exercises you can perform because it raises your metabolism enough to burn excess calories all over your body. Total body fitness, not just spot toning one area, is the key to a flat stomach.

People&Fashion Superstitions run deep...
Simple pleasures online
An online poll has revealed that superstition still runs deep and one in 10 Britons would not risk taking a white knuckle rollercoaster ride on Friday 13th.
Julie Andrews famously sang of her "favourite things" and a website devoted to listing the small things that make us smile has become a worldwide hit. Canadian Neil Pasricha (pictured above), 30, was having a really bad year when he came up with the idea for a blog that would contain one happy event each day. At first his family were the only people who showed any interest. But then the website started to gather a growing army of fans - all, it seemed, were eager to read about the joy of being in the right queue at the bank, or finding all
the socks match into pairs after washing and have been logging on to 1000awesome-things.com (there’s no “www” at the front) to check out each day's happy event. The website was started in 2008 and within the year won the Webby award for best blog of the year. It has had more than 17 million hits and attracts 50,000 visitors each day and has
now spawned a book, already published in the US, which will be coming out in the UK in the autumn. Neil's one thousand happy event countdown will take him until April 30th 2012 and he has never missed a day. So, to find out if it includes the smell of a baby's skin after bathing, the purring of a contented cat curled up in front of the fire, or the unexpected smile from a stranger, just log on.
According to the poll around half of all Britons don´t want to tempt fate and a third admit to changing what they do on Friday 13th because they think the day is unlucky.
revealed that Britons are a seriously superstitious bunch, and as our latest ride is named after the unluckiest of numbers, we've taken the decision to close that ride on Friday 13th to reassure our visitors."
And organisers at the UK theme park Alton Towers have taken the findings to heart - they have decided to close the terrifying new rollercoaster named Thi3teen on Friday of next week because research showed people would not want to ride on it.
The rest of the Staffordshire resort will be open as usual for guests prepared to be brave. Around 60 per cent of those taking part in the survey thought that breaking mirrors and walking under ladders brought bad luck putting them at the top of the list of superstitions.

Pictured is the current range-topper of the Mini Countryman, the all-new SUV version of BMW’s small car - the £22,030 181bhp Cooper S ALL4. Mini’s optional all-wheel-drive system, ALL4 – an electronic differential – sends 50 per cent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels in low grip situations, and up to 100 per cent should the diff sense ‘excessively sporty driving’.
Webber gifted Hungarian GP Team mate Vettel admits to going to sleep behind the safety car and missing the restart, allowing more than the 10 car gap to develop and incurred a drive through. always that I’m a big cryer. What do the public think? I’d love them to let me know on Twitter…”
Thereafter Vettel was in control, easily a second a lap faster than Alonso so it was going to be a walk in the park
With victory in Budapest, Webber now leads the championship
One point was at stake, but this wasn’t about championship points it
was Schumacher still holding a grudge. Barrichello said: “ He could have killed me.” That was the worst scenario, at the least it could have meant a serious injury. Schumacher, the onetime legend had this comeback to put his clouded past behind him and enrich his reputation, but he continued to tarnish it and has now been handed a 10 place grid penalty for the next GP. A bemused Barrichello said: “He made a mistake on the last corner and he’s just a bit too close. What we want from racing is to have battles but to be fair.
Car, Webber, Vettel, Alonso followed by Massa. But Vettel “nodded off” and missed the restart. Meanwhile mayhem erupted in the pit lane when Kubica’s crew released the Renault driver straight into Sutil’s path which ended the Force India driver’s race on the spot.

standings, as Lewis Hamilton failed to finish with transmission problems on his McLaren Mercedes. There were a number of incidents during the course of the 70 laps, including a couple in the pit lane when Force India’s Adrian Sutil and Renault’s Robert Kubica collided, and in a separate incident Nico Rosberg lost a wheel on his Mercedes GP at the end of the pitlane after his tyre stop. When the red lights went off for the start of the Hungarian GP it unraveled pretty much as expected at the front. Vettel managed a reasonable start
for the German. But fate was going to deal another hand. Behind him Webber could not do much about Alonso and in turn the Aussie was not perturbed by Massa. The quartet held station until lap 17 when the safety car was deployed to clear up some debris. It was a short stint under the safety car conditions which both Vettel and Alonso used for tyre stops. Webber stayed out. The order then was Safety

Kubica got going again but was given a drive through penalty for his crew’s blatant mistake. Almost simultaneously Rosberg’s right rear detached itself as the Mercedes GP driver was about to leave the pit lane. The wheel was stopped goal keeper style by a Sauber crewman, Rosberg’s race was run. So what looked on paper as being another processional race turned into one full of incident much to the delight of the millions watching.

Snetterton plays host to rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship on August 7th and 8th. It feels like a long time since Gordon Shedden scored a double win at Croft towards the end of June, but the BTCC finally returns to action next weekend. During that long break we have seen Wimbledon, the Tour de France, and the Formula One British Grand Prix come and go. Honda Racing Team's Matt Neal leads the points standings as the series heads to Norfolk to embark on the second half of its season, but with nine different winners in the first 15 races, there is still a very
long way to go before this year's champion is crowned. Some of the top teams and drivers from the BTCC attended an official test session at Snetterton last week and it was Team Aon's Tom Chilton who came out on top in his turbocharged, LPG-powered Ford Focus. As well as leading the championship race, Matt Neal is the only driver to have won three times this year, while Jason Plato (Silverline Chevrolet second, eight points behind Neal), Gordon Shedden (Honda Racing Team third) and Tom OnslowCole (Team Aon – fourth) each have two victories.

Barcelona ready to give up on Cesc Frustrated Barcelona are ready to turn to Mikel Arteta as an alternative to signing Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal. The Catalans have been frustrated in their attempts to prise Fabregas from the Emirates Stadium, despite the midfielder's desire to return to the club where he came through the youth ranks.
Record medal haul for team GB & NI On the final night of action at the Olympic Stadium, the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team collected three more medals to take their tally to 19 for the championships - six golds, seven silvers and six bronzes. The men’s and women’s 4x400 metre relay teams fought hard for their medals with the silver going to the mens team and bronze for the women. But bronze was a just reward for the team who have focused their own individual event frustrations on gaining a medal from these championships. Nicola Sanders summed up their motivation with her own experience during 2010: "Brilliant, that feels brilliant! Especially for me after such a tough year to come away with a medal. I just want to get up on the podium, it looks wicked up there.” Chris Tomlinson was so unlucky not to get a silver medal in the long jump with his first leap of the competition he flew out to 8.18m to take an early

Rooney puffed out Sir Alex Ferguson is under pressure to take action against Wayne Rooney and Anderson after his two Manchester United players were involved in separate embarrassing incidents over the weekend. Rooney, 24, was photographed smoking just four days before his first pre-season game, and was also seen urinating in public as a Saturday night out with wife Coleen and friends went on until 5.30am. The pictures will anger Ferguson, who had given the England striker an extended break after the World Cup and had
intended to play him in a friendly in Dublin. Anderson, 22, faces the possibility of a police investigation in Portugal after it emerged he was driving the Audi R8 car that crashed and burst into flames at 7am on Saturday as he and two companions returned from a nightclub in Braga. The Brazilian, who is expected to make his comeback from a cruciate ligament injury next month, was treated for superficial injuries but police want to know if he had been drinking before the crash.

Langer grabs his second Open
Hello again
Bernhard Langer fought off jet lag and a partisan hometown crowd to add the US Senior Open to his British Senior Open of the week before
Once again this last week I have been back in the U.K. this time to help my son celebrate his fortieth birthday. During a very enjoyable party on Saturday night I was surprised and delighted to learn that he and I had been booked in on the Sunday to play a game at the fairly new Luton Hoo Golf and Spa Hotel. This very plush venue has been constructed in the grounds of Luton Hoo, an imposing mansion just outside the town which was where the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh spent their honeymoon. The designers of the course have done a fantastic job aided by some really beautiful parkland where nine of the holes are located with the other nine built on what was previously farmland. These holes have been heavily planted with trees and in a few years will surely be as pleasant as the other nine. A very tasty bacon roll and coffee started the day off perfectly and the staff were extremely courteous and helpful. Both of us played reasonable golf most of the way round with a few pars here and there to keep us going for a round which took us just five minutes over three hours which is very refreshing after the five hour marathons we seem to have to endure in Spain. A nice pint of the amber nectar finished the morning off perfectly while we sat in the quiet courtyard of the hotel.
Langer shot a final-round three-under 67 and took advantage of Fred Couples’s critical mistake to complete a daunting trans-Atlantic double. Langer finished at eight under for the tournament in Sammamish, Wash., with a partisan hometown crowd hoping Couples could pull out victory just 20 miles east of where he grew up. Langer had his son Stefan on the bag to witness his feat
Tied with Langer starting the day, Couples birdied the opening hole before his undoing on No. 2, a par 5 and the easiest hole on the course. Couples plopped his third shot into the greenside pond, and by the time he walked off with a triple bogey, he was in chase mode.Couples, who was runner-up at the Senior P.G.A. Championship
