n 02 - General News ICKHAM’S
WORLD Worldwide force...!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Well, I have to report that the boys from australia weren't that bad. They only stayed three days so there was no getting sick of them, we had intelligent conversation on all manner of subjects and they left their rooms, the kitchen and bathrooms tidy. They weren't loud and didn't get drunk. For one 19year-old and two twenty-year-olds that can't be bad! They're now off to Cadiz then Portugal, France and holland before heading back home to Oz and are already planning their next trip to asia – China, Vietnam, Thailand etc. Our newly revamped website is getting visited (getting lots of 'hits') I am told and the feedback we're getting from it is very good indeed. People are saying how easy it is to navigate and they are finding it particularly good because they can still read their copy of The News when on holiday elsewhere in the world people have reported from France, Germany, holland, Ireland, spain, the Usa, australia and, of course, the UK to name but a few. so, not only are we read on the Costa del sol, it would appear that we are now a worldwide force! Even though it is august and blisteringly hot (it can't get any more humid though, can it......?) there's still plenty going on, so have a look at the Community News and Out and about sections where we will be reporting on all the up and coming events during august and beyond.

Clegg and family slip quietly in Although the PM did not visit Ronda as reported in the local press last week, deputy PM Nick Clegg, his wife Miriam and the three sons really are visiting her family in Olmedo, Valladolid province, as recorded by RTVE1 cameras on Tuesday. The Cleggs have been spending part of their summer holidays in the town for the past 15 years and, as usual, they arrived without any fuss and walk
round the town like any other resident. Miriam Clegg's family is well known there – her father was once mayor – and well liked by the locals, who told RTVE's

reporter that they are “a lovely couple”. Clegg gave a quick interview, saying in perfect Spanish that he loved visiting his mother-in-law who is an excellent cook. He
said it was good to get away to a warmer climate and escape politics for a few days. Mayor Alfonso Centeno said he didn't expect the Clegg's visit to
Executioner’s son reveals site of mass graves Archaeologists have recovered 28 bodies from four graves in the cemetery at Alcaudete de la Jara, Toledo province, 71 years after they were executed on the orders of the local Guardia Civil chief. Witnesses said the men, aged between 17 to 55, were taken in a lorry from their homes on the afternoon of April 25th, 1939. They were just a few of the thousands of former Republicans who were executed after the Civil War ended on April 1st,
1939. When the sister of one of the men tried to give her brother his jacket, one of the Guardias who were rounding up the men said: “He won’t need that where he’s going.” Local people knew the graves had to be somewhere in the area but the exact site was only revealed when the son of the man who gave the order decided he could no longer live with thE terrible knowledge on his conscience and informed the local authorities.

Missing Spanish tourists located in india Twenty of 50 Spanish tourists who were stranded by the floods in the Leh valley in India have been located safe and sound, while another 90 who were rescued over the weekend are already in New Delhi on their way homej Two of those located - Juan Marmolejo, 34, and Encarnacion Ruiz, 35, both keen mountain climbers are natives of Coin. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said they had made their own way on
foot to Leh and were waiting with the other 18 to be evacuated. The spokesman said the Indian police had reported that one of the missing 30 – Lourdes Morro from Majorca – was dead,
according to the trekking company which had organised her visit. It said she had been camping in the same area as two French tourists who were swept away by an avalanche. However, the
Foreign Ministry spokesman said there was still hope that she could be found alive. He said every effort was being made to locate the other 29 missing tourists and that it was too early to “feel pessimistic”.
Being close to the Himalayas, the area is very popular with mountain climbers and trekkers. Forty of the 90 Spaniards in New Delhi belong to a Basque mountaineering club.
checking on cuba politics
A Socialist Party delegation led by Organization secretary Leire Pajin will travel to Cuba on August 31st to see for themselves how the political situation there is
evolving. In January, Socialist MP Luis Yañez, who had the same objective, was refused entry by the Cuban authorities. Since then the Cuban government has
agreed to release 52 political prisoners – most of whom will come to Spain initially. The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has asked the Socialist delegation to
talk to members of the opposition to the Cuban regime, something Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos has avoided in his recent visits to the island.

Gender violence is women’s fault A survey carried out by the Equality Ministry showed that four out of ten people believe that women are to blame for the violence they suffer at the hands of their partners because they continue to live with them. National Police in action in Ceuta, the other Spanish border with Morocco.
Border conflict causes complaint
half believed the root of the violence lay in drugs and alcohol. If they were to become victims themselves, 42% said they would go to a relative for help, 34% said they would go to the police and 13% said they would go to the nearest health centre.
Nearly 20% of the 2,000 people questioned in the survey believed that women were making false reports of violence. Another 70% said women failed to report violence out of fear or shame. Over
A ministry spokesman said the survey showed the general public had a “pretty good idea of the reality of gender violence”.
The Moroccan foreign ministry has made a formal complaint to its Spanish counterpart about the “racist” attitude of the police manning the border between Melilla and Morocco.
English bulldog breeder arrested
It mentions “physical violence” and “brutal interrogations”, in three specific cases which happened last week. One Moroccan said a Spanish policeman had hit him with his truncheon, fracturing his arm and leaving considerable bruising all over his body.
Police have arrested a Spaniard they alleged earned up to €60,000 selling English bulldogs in Spain and Britain under false pretences. The man, identified only as EGP of Valladolid, promised to send the buyers the relevant pedigrees, ownership papers and
Meanwhile, the Spanish border police have complained that four of their women have been attacked verbally and physically by Moroccan men attempting to enter Melilla. A Spanish foreign ministry spokesman said the Moroccan authorities would “do well to examine
their consciences”. He recalled that in 2007 the UN Committee against Torture admitted a complaint by the Spanish Refugees Aid Commission in which it accused Morocco of torturing and deporting 42 Africans in 2006, despite their official status as refugees.
health certificates but these were never received. The police said the man did not belong to any professional breeders’ association. The investigation began last May when the police received a complaint from a man who paid £900 for one of the man’s bulldogs.
Out of the mouths of babes The way out of the current economic crisis is to work hard, save, spend less – and get rid of the prime minister and all his ministers, according to the 2,200 youngsters aged four to 16 from around the country who took part in a recent survey. Those were some of the opinions revealed in a study titled “What do you want to be when you grow up”, which has been carried out every year for the past six years. The boys want to be footballers, even though they felt they should be paid less, along with singers, actors and politicians. Nearly half said that if given the power, they would end all wars and abolish weapons The girls settled for teaching. Both boys and girls thought sweeping streets and collecting rubbish were the least desirable jobs but agreed that any job was better than being on the dole. If given the power, they said they would put an end to all wars, ban all weapon, tackle poverty and hunger and take steps to protect the environment.

UK toddlers killed in car crash Cuban President, Raúl Castro
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez
ETA finds safe harbour in Cuba According to the US Department of State's report on world-wide terrorism in 2009, which was published last week, both Cuba and Nicaragua are providing safe havens for members of the Basque terrorist group, ETA. It said that most of the “etarras” in Nicaragua were retired or inactive, while those in Cuba have arrived there to take part in peace negotiations with the Spanish government under the mediation of the Cuban government. The report said it had no evidence that Cuba was financing ETA. It praised the hard-line policy of the Basque regional
government and the Spanish authorities, noting that between 2007 and 2009, 365 “etarras” had been arrested, including most of its leaders.
Radical Islamists The report also said that Spain has a special strategic importance for radical Islamist terrorists.
It said its geographic location facilitated the terrorists' movements from North African and South Asia to the rest of Europe. The fact that Al Qaeda in North Africa had named its propaganda section Al-Andalus “confirmed the Spanish government's suspicions that Spain continues to be an important objective”, the report said.

The Foreign Office confirmed on Monday that two British toddlers, a oneyear-old girl and a two-year-old boy, were killed and their mother injured in a car crash near Briviesca, in Burgos province, on Saturday night. The children's father, who is thought to be a French national, and two other children were also treated in hospital following the incident. The Guardia Civil are investigating the accident on the AP1 motorway. The family's car, a Renault Espace, reportedly broke through the central reservation and plunged down a grass bank at the side of the road. The Foreign Office said its officials were providing consular assistance to the family.

Blackest weekend Marriages of convenience on roads MADRID. Twenty six people lost their lives on the roads on the first full weekend in August - five more than the same weekend last year making it the worst so far this year. However, the total number of road deaths is still down – 991 this year so far - 174 less than for the same period last year.
MADRID. The National Police have arrested 123 people belonging to an organisation that arranged marriages of convenience between foreigners and Spaniards. For a fee of €3,000, clients received a false Family Book – which is given to a couple when they marry - supplied by civil registry officials which enabled them to obtain residents' permits.
International sex ring dismantled
Fewer foreign residents
BARCELONA. The National Police have dismantled an international ring that brought women from Eastern Europe to work in brothels, mainly in Barcelona and Tarragona provinces and Tenerife. Eleven people have been arrested so far. The investigation started in June 2009 after information was received from the Russian authorities. The police action stopped two more brothels from opening in Madrid and Barcelona.
MADRID. The number of foreigners from the EU or with a resident permit to live in Spain dropped by 98,330 in the last three months following a downward trend reflected in figures for the past nine months. Of the total of 4.7 million foreigner residents, Rumanians are the most numerous (793,205), followed by Moroccans (758,900). Britons are the fifth largest group.

World News 'Rubber soldiers' fight for rights
General Montgomery landed on Gibraltar
Jenkins denied compensation Sion Jenkins, who served six years for his foster daughter's murder before he was acquitted, has been refused compensation. Thousands of Brazilians ended up working on Amazon rubber plantations
In 1943, while the US, Britain and their allies were fighting on the battlefields of Europe, North Africa and the Far East, thousands of impoverished Brazilians were being urged to do their own patriotic duty. With the main rubberproducing country at the time, Malaysia, under Japanese occupation, and synthetic rubber not available on the scale needed to supply the war effort, the US needed a reliable source of rubber. The Washington Accords required Brazil to supply all the latex it could in exchange for $2m (which would be some $25m today)
1942
from the US. Some 55,000 people, mostly young single men, signed up to become “rubber soldiers” but many of them would never see their families or homes again. Their government's promises of healthcare, accommodation and food came to nothing. After some years the government began to pay them a small pension. Today around 8,300 surviving rubber
soldiers and 6,500 of their widows receive 1020 reais ($576, £370) a month but this is much less than they were led to believe they would earn. Sympathetic politicians are pushing for a pension increase to be agreed soon, and a legal team is also working to secure compensation. But time is running out and for many of the rubber soldiers it is already too late.
The Ministry of Justice said it would not comment on individual cases but that damages for wrongful imprisonment were paid only when a person was shown to be "clearly innocent." Mr Jenkins had his murder conviction overturned and two subsequent juries were unable to reach verdicts. Billie-Jo Jenkins, 14, was killed with a metal tent peg at her foster family's home in Hastings, East Sussex, in 1997. Mr Jenkins had sought up to £500,000 damages. In a newspaper interview in 2008, Mr Jenkins said during six years he spent in jail he was physically assaulted and
members of his family died. He also said he "lost the childhood of his daughters" who had emigrated to Tasmania with his former wife and her new partner following the original conviction. Sussex Police said the murder of Billie-Jo Jenkins remains an unresolved case and they would continue actively to pursue any viable lines of enquiry put to them, but none have emerged.
New search for Suzy Lamplugh's body Officers investigating the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh will begin a new search for her body in an area near Pershore in Worcestershire. The 25year-old west London estate agent went missing in 1986 and was officially declared dead in 1994. The Metropolitan Police will not say whether the search will centre around the disused Norton Army Barracks, which was previously searched in December 2000 and February 2001. Police conducted DNA tests on 800 unidentified bodies, before closing the case in 1987. It was reopened in 2000 and the disused barracks were searched. The Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to charge a Sutton Coldfield man who was believed to be the prime suspect.

Welfare and tax credit fraud and error costs the taxpayer £5.2bn a year. That's the cost of more than 200 secondary schools or over 150,000 nurses. It's absolutely outrageous and we can not stand for it." He said a simplified benefits system being developed by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan

One firm, Experian, said it was in talks with ministers over a deal which could see it paid according to the number of cheats it uncovers. Experian said it already had a contract to scrutinise new housing benefit claimants, in a deal agreed by the previous government which had saved £17m. Legal drugs could State gets wine vending machines break cartels PENNSYLVANIA. The state has some of the strictest alcohol laws in the country and until now wine has only been sold at state-owned shops. Now shoppers can buy it from vending machines but they still face several hurdles. They must swipe both a proof of age and their payment card, then there's the breathalyser. State officials monitor CCTV cameras as a final safeguard.
MEXICO. Former president Vicente Fox has called for the legalisation of drugs, arguing that prohibition has failed to curb rising drug-related violence and corruption. He said legalisation did not mean that drugs were good, but it could reduce the power of the cartels. Current president Felipe Calderon has called for a debate on legalisation, although he personally opposes the idea.
HP chief resigns after sex probe
BBC broadcasts suspended
PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA. Hewlett Packard president and CEO Mark Hurd has resigned after an investigation into sexual harassment claims made against him by a former HP contractor. HP said its sexual harassment policy had not been violated but its standards of business conduct were. Mr Hurd's departure shocked investors, who have credited him with reviving HP's fortunes since taking over five years ago.
SUDAN. The government has halted BBC Arabic broadcasts on FM radio stations in four northern cities, including the capital Khartoum. A spokesman said the move was not related to the content of broadcasts, but to breaches of the accord governing BBC activities. These included bringing satellite equipment in through diplomatic channels and working in Southern Sudan without central government approval.

Gib border 'congestion charge' of €5 La Linea mayor Alejandor Sanchez announced on Monday that he planned to introduce a congestion charge of around €5 on the border with Gibraltar which will come into force “as soon as the administrative paperwork is completed” - probably in mid-October. The mayor, who belongs to the Partido Popular, said the charge was the result of the government's “abandoning” of La Linea in 2004 when it froze the Special Economic Charter granted to the town
by previous governments. To avoid problems with the Development Ministry which owns the access road to the Rock, he said the congestion charge would be collected at a toll station
built on municipal land. Sr Sanchez said “La Linea cannot allow two queues – the 10,000 people lining up outside the dole office and the other queue at kiosks in Gibraltar of people buying
Fine for Record flamingo feeding ringing year stray animals Mijas Town Hall is asking residents to help keep the town clean by not feeding stray cats and dogs, and birds. A law banning this has been on the books for years but has generally not been enforced. Now Mijas intends to start fining people caught feeding the strays up to €750. A council spokesman said there had been complaints from residents who had found the remains of food left out for the animals outside their gates. He said people should contact the animal rescue groups instead of feeding the animals themselves.
Bollywood comes to Andalucia The town of Alájar in Huelva province has been converted into a film set this week by Indian director Zoya Akhtar. The town centre was cut off last Saturday for the filming of dance scenes. Nearly all the 800 residents are appearing as extras, including Mayor Carmen Osorno. The town is located in the heart of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche natural park, some 110 km from Huelva capital and attracts thousands of tourists every summer. Filming of Zidagi na milego dobara (You only live once) began in Navarre on July 17th.
Some 600 young flamingos have been ringed at the Laguna de Piedra – the most important breeding ground in the western Mediterranean area for these birds. Thanks to the water level at the lagoon – the highest for 13 years –
some 400 volunteers were able to ring 600 of the 8,000 flamingo chicks produced by 15,000 pairs of birds this year. Hundreds of visitors attend the ringing every year and all agreed this

Andalucian attitudes
House sales slow down
SeVILLe. The BBVA's European Mindset Study of 1,500 people for 2009 shows that Andalucians admire teachers, the military, doctors, scientists and journalists much more than the religious authorities, trade unionists and the politicians, who are at the bottom of the list. Only a third read a newspaper every day, especially the cultural and health pages, while another third never read them.
SeVILLe. Despite the fact that figures for June do not include the increased IVA, house sales only showed a 7% rise, the second worst month this year. Secondhand housing continued to lead the market – at just under half the sales, a 17% rise over June last year.
Cuts to start biting
Elderly favour later retirement
San Roque. The town council decided cut costs by eliminating the municipal urban planning department, the Municipal Fiestas Institute and the Municipal Sports Patronato, with the resulting cutback in staff. Mayor Fernando Palma said it was the first step towards implementing the Financial Streamlining Plan approved in July last year to cut administrative costs.
SeVILLe. Three quarters of Spaniards over the age of 65 would support extending the retirement age, according to the 2010 Survey of Older People. A government spokesman said that the majority felt retirement depended on a person’s physical and mental condition. Nearly 90% of over65s said they preferred to live alone, although currently over 80% live with their families.

More than 1.5 million people visited the Marbella website on Google on Monday, following the visit of US First Lady Michele Obama and her youngest daughter, Sasha. Town councillor Jose Luis Hernandez said the visit was “possibly the biggest promotional campaign” for Marbella as a tourist destination “in the town’s history”. He said more than 200 journalists from all over the world had reported on the visit – “even in China, Japan and Vietnam”. Sr Hernandez said data provided the OAK Power marketing company estimated the value the visit at more than €800 million’s worth of advertising. “What happened last week would have been unthinkable three years ago,” he said. “We have been able to turn around Marbella’s image and convert it into an internationally fashionable tourist destination.” Mrs Obama and daughter Sasha, plus a 40 strong group of friends, visited the tourist hot spots during their stay in Marbella. The party went to Granada and toured the Alhambra, greeted by throngs of excited locals in the city streets, and toured Ronda's famous bullring while on a visit to the picturesque town.Mrs Obama also went shopping in Marbella's old town. The three-chocolate flavours ice-cream that Mrs Obama bought during a stroll round the town on Thursday has been sold out since then. The owner of a boutique she visited said she couldn't keep up with demand for the dresses that Mrs Obama bought for herself and her oldest daughter. A few
eyebrows were raised when part of the beach near her hotel was closed off by police so she and her group could swim and sunbathe. Beach goers had to peer from the far side of the cordon tapes and also had their bags searched if they got too near the closed off section. There had been speculation that she would attend the glitzy €1,000 a head Starlite Gala on Saturday night. Four hundred tickets had already been sold for the charity fundraiser, hosted by Antonio Banderas and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and guests included the usual array of Marbella "aristocracy". Two hundred more had put their names down for tickets amid the speculation that the First Lady would be a special guest at the event, held at Villa Padierna - the hotel base for the Obama party. But instead she slipped away in a cavalcade of cars for dinner at Marbella's La Meridiana restaurant, which has over the years played host to stars and royalty. On Sunday Mrs Obama carried out her only official engagement as she and Sasha headed to Majorca, to have lunch with King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia. They spent the day at the Marivent Palace, the Royal summer residence. Prince Felipe was not present - he was on his way home from an official engagement in South America. But as she left the sun
and sangria and welcoming faces behind and boarded the Presidential plane for the flight home, she was heading into a storm of criticism. Americans have been as hard hit as any country by the recession and questions were being asked about the cost of the trip to US taxpayers, who have had to pick up the bill for the flights and the large security presence. Observers reckon that the total bill for the break could be in the region of £250,000 by the time all meals and accommodation have been taken into account and US politicians are asking for a break-down to identify just how much has been paid for by the Obamas and how much by the American taxpayer. One TV station went as far as calling her a “latter day Marie Antoinette” who told the people of Paris who could not afford bread to eat cake.

August is a wicked month
Girls’ night out
I
U
t's wicked because a lot of important little tidbits of news tend to get lost in a welter of inconsequential pieces from reporters whose minds are not really on the job (because they have to work when everyone else seems to be at the beach). For example, Sr Zapatero – who's trying to set a good example by not going on holiday (except that nobody else is around to see it) – had a working lunch with King Juan Carlos at his summer palace, the Marivent, in Majorca on Tuesday and let slip that there would be worse economic news before year's end. The reporters who covered that failed to mention that this snippet is at odds with his repeated predictions that it's all going to come up roses in the near future.
A
nd the Socialists in Madrid are so bored that they've set Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez to run against the party's Madrid leader, Tomas Gomez, in the hope of unseating the PP's “Iron Lady”, Esperanza Aguirre in the next regional election. Now, you've heard of little grey men – well, Gomez is a perfect example, even if he's not so little. He might have done a lot to reorganise the party after Aguirre smashed it at the polls in the last regional election but he's no match for her. And she must be watering at the mouth just thinking of running against “la Trinidad” - who ended up in tears the last time she ran for Madrid premier in 2003. The Socialists simply can't accept that Madrid is a very PP town and that the Madrileños are quite happy with the way Esperanza and Madrid mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, also of the PP, are running their city for them.
she then gave to the Latin Americans – who were probably receiving millions of unwanted vaccines from other countries as well. Of course, she was the driving force behind the last-minute campaign that made Zapatero – another little grey man from Leon – party general secretary back in July 2000, when the strong favourite was Speaker and former defence minister José Bono. So Zapatero has great faith in her, and put her in charge of Spain's relations with Latin America after he won the 2004 general election.
I
f Jimenez wants to win the Madrid regional election, she'll have to keep quiet about her activities during those years so as not upset Marid's rather conservative residents. She's well to the left of the left-wing of the Socialist Party and couldn't get enough of kowtowing to the likes of Venezuela's great “revolutionary” Hugo Chavez, swallowing his lies wholesale. She also backed all his little protegées to the hilt Evo Morales in Bolivia, Rafael Correa in Ecuador and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. This happy little band of revolutionaries led the offensive against brave little Honduras, which preferred to become an international pariah rather than let Chavez interfere in its internal affairs. The Honduran military, with the support of a majority in Congress, overthrew the government of Manuel Zelaya who, advised by Chavez, was trying to perpetuate himself in power. We don't hear much about that little debacle anymore and Jimenez would be wise to let it die a natural death. In any case, the whole internal Socialist fight for Madrid could be nothing more than a smoke screen to detract attention from more important matters – like the economic situation - as Izquierda Unida's coordinator Cayo Laya maintains.
B
Trinidad Jimenez
J
imenez's qualification for the job of Madrid premier is that she is supposed to have handled the 2009 swine flu non-epidemic brilliantly but all she did – like other health ministers all over the world - was order millions of vaccines which weren't needed, which
ut the most exquisite tidbit involves the Cuban dissidents who were recently let out of jail and expelled by the Castros, who are desperately in need of economic help from the international community. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Last week, the Cubans said they intended to sue the Spanish government if it does not grant them the status of political refugees that they are demanding. Now, Foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos played a key role in getting the dissidents out of jail – but only because he wants the EU to soften its anti-Cuba stance. So their demand for political refugee status puts him and the government between a rock and a hard place. They don't want to upset the dissidents, nor do they want to upset the Castro brothers. It will be interesting to see how they wriggle out of this one. I think Zapatero and his merry band of men (and women) are about to find out how obstreperous those ungrateful Cubans can be. They make your average anarchic Spaniard look like like child's play. I'm looking forward to the show.
S first lady Michelle Obama left Spain on Sunday to return home to face a barrage of criticism for taking a Costa del Sol holiday at the expense of US taxpayers. Boisterous chats from conservative television commentators and bloggers have centred as to why the first lady and her daughter opted for an expensive vacation – and without her husband – at a time when Washington is to be looking at tightening the government's belt. Should she have gone instead to spend time on Florida’s Gulf coast, which is environmentally impacted by the BP spill and help pump some money into the depressed beach economy? That was one major question that has been raised. Not since Jaqueline Kennedy made her nowfamous visit to France in 1961, without her husband, there hadn’t been such abundant media coverage in the US press of a first lady’s trip abroad. The White House had been almost circumspect about the issue because, as spokesmen would only say, it was a private visit. But White House Senior Advisor David Axelrod told CNN on Monday he didn’t think the criticism aimed at Mrs Obama and her daughter Sasha was fair but still he gave no reasons as to why Spain was the chosen destination. But the issue became clearer on Monday when Chicago Sun-Times columnist and Washington bureau chief Lynn Sweet scratched well below the surface to explain the trip.
A
ccording to Sweet, Mrs Obama travelled with a handful of friends – three women and four daughters who all paid their own way – and not 40 people as some news outlets have quoted. One of Michelle Obama’s friends from Chicago, Anita Blanchard, was the catalyst for the Spanish trip. Blanchard, an obstetrician who delivered both Obama girls, had lost her father in July and Mrs Obama was unable to attend the funeral, writes Sweet, quoting a White House source. Blanchard, who is married to President Obama’s campaign financial chief, had promised her own daughter a trip to Spain and asked the first lady to tag along with Sasha (Maila, the other daughter was away at summer camp). “She felt it was important as a friend to do this,” the source told the columnist.
S
ecurity concerns were given as to the reason she stayed at the lavish five-star Villa Padierna Hotel. US Secret Service agents said that it was the best choice to secure the area as opposed to other hotels.
T
he noise over Mrs Obama’s Spanish holiday will soon blow over in the United States now that campaigning is in full earnest for the midterm elections in November. The Democrats face a gruelling struggle to keep majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representative at a time when many Americans are frustrated over the lack of progress in solving the unemployment issue and getting the
economy back on its feet.
M
ichelle Obama is one of the most popular figures in the president’s entourage, and it is a shame that the White House wasn’t up front about why she decided on Costa del Sol, Spain over Fort Walton Beach, Florida. This first lady is not known for excesses as some of her predecessors were famous for manifesting, such as Nancy Reagan who created a stir when she announced that she was purchasing expensive china for the White House soon after Ronald Reagan was sworn into office in 1981. Mrs Obama has launched an important campaign to combat child obesity in the United States, which is growing at an alarming rate. Like any good mother, she wants the best for her two girls – including keeping their lives at a normal pace and away from the media scrutiny that comes with the White House job. If mother and daughters want a girls’ night out, then they should be allowed to have it.
Impossible impartiality
T
omás Gómez, the leader of the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM), and Trinidad Jiménez, the Health minister, will face each other in a primary for the Socialist party nomination in next year’s regional premier’s race in Madrid . They have both asked the PSOE national executive committee to remain neutral but the camps are already divided following a sounding off by Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero who has said he would like to see Jiménez win – a bad sign for Gómez. Party primaries are a rare bird in Madrid and an even rarer bird is to ask and to get party leaders to agree to remain impartial in an internal race. The Socialists are split in Madrid and this is good news for Esperanza Aguirre, the current regional premier who represents the Popular Party. But there is also another problem for Zapatero and his supporters. Should Gómez win the nomination on October 3rd, it could politically wound the prime minister within Socialists ranks. It could even put Gómez in a powerful position to wrest control of the PSOE from Zapatero before the next general elections. It’s a risk that Zapatero is willing to take for being overly confident that Jiménez will defeat Gómez

Los Llanos I read with interest the recent letter from one of your readers about the difficulties of selling her home in the Coin campo because of the lack of a licence. People who have campo houses are now facing a nightmare. It seems that the banks, not only keen to depress valuations, are now insisting that the paperwork for a mortgage application includes a licence of first occupation. Well, that’s hilarious, because as far as I am aware there isn’t a campo house in existence that has such a licence. Even people living on urbanisations can face a lengthy wait before prising their licence from the hot hand of the town hall even though it is need to get your electricity supply! So, it seems to me, that the
town halls are now doing all they can to completely crush an already struggling housing market. Maybe they are trying to force buyers to forgo the countryside and move into the large number of newly built empty flats and townhouses that do have a licence of first occupation. Whatever, questions should be asked of the town halls. I understand, for example, that it is possible to supply a form of certificate which acts in the same way for mortgage purposes, but apparently my nearest councils of Coin and Alhaurin el Grande are setting their faces against

Catch a falling star This week is the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower as hundreds of shooting stars are expected to streak across the night sky. this. Perhaps Mayor Clavijo in Coin would like to set out the rationale for this very unhelpful attitude - after all, he’s the one that said he wants dialogue with the foreigners! In the meantime, those of us with campo houses need to keep our fingers crossed for a cash buyer - or would it be easier to look for hens teeth.

Comet Swift-Tuttle is like a huge dirty snowball 17 miles across that goes around the Sun every 133 years or so - it last appeared in 1992. As the comet gets closer to the Sun then it begins to vaporise and produce the tail that is often associated with comets. The tail is made from millions of tiny pieces of rock and ice, some no bigger than a grain of sand, that get left in space after the comet has gone. The thing about comet Swift-Tuttle though is that its tail crosses the orbit of the Earth so as we pass through the debris we get to see a meteor shower. The comet tail is quite large and so it takes us several days to pass through it but tonight (Wednesday August 11th) tomorrow and Friday are the best nights to see the meteors and this year, as there will be no Moon to spoil the view, it could be quite an impressive display with up to 100 meteors an hour expected after midnight tomorrow. You don’t need any special equipment to watch the
Perseids, just relax in a reclining chair or sun lounger away from any street lights and look towards the north east and with a little patience you should see them as the tiny particles from the comet burn up in our upper atmosphere and produce a brief streak of light. Around midnight is the best time to see them as our part of the Earth will then be directly in the stream. You may see shooting stars anywhere in the sky but if you follow an imaginary line backwards then they all appear to radiate from one part of the sky near to the constellation Perseus, hence the name Perseids. We do have other meteor showers throughout the year but The Perseids are the most consistent of them and regularly produce a large number of meteors. In some years when the Earth has passed through a particularly dense part of the comet tail it has even produced a meteor storm of thousands of meteors per hour, unfortunately
predicting the meteors is not an exact science and some years have produced almost no meteors at all. The Perseids have been observed for hundreds of years, in some parts of the world they are known as the tears of Saint Lawrence in memory of the martyr Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of comedians. It is said that he was being roasted alive by the Romans when he shouted out: “I am done on this side, can you turn me over now please.”
Fuengirola Astronomy Society If you would like to join us at the top of Benalmadena mountain tonight or Friday to watch the Perseids then take the cable car from Tivoli World right to the very top of the mountain to our open air planetarium, I will be giving a special presentation this week about the Perseids. ‘Los Arcos’ (The new venue for TAPAS) was transformed last week by Gerry Harris for the hilariously funny comedy play ‘Searching for Dr Branovic’. From the outset the audience was drawn into the mystery and mayhem of Joe (Andy Busby) waking rather confusedly from the dead in the mortuary, after trying and obviously failing to commit suicide! Joe’s wife Emma was baffled, bemused and bewildered by the new turn of events throughout, not helped by the chaotic policing and mystified
mutterings of Detective Inspector Monroe. Throw into the mix a puzzled and perplexed Polish Doctor suffering from amnesia, or not! and a rather officious Funeral Director and there you have it. Doesn’t sound as if it could be anything else but riotously funny does it? What ensued was pure farcical comedy at its best from the exacting writing of David Tristram.Directed by Lee Lingwood, the fast pace continued from start to finish. The best comedy play from TAPAS yet. Having successfully

Muscle wastage begins within 3 days of any immobilisation so to prevent further weakness or injury it is important to rebuild, through safe exercise, any muscles that have deteriorated. It is better to swim dogs in heated water since cold water causes constriction of the blood vessels near the skin and to the superficial muscles (those just under the skin) which restricts the flow of blood making the muscles less efficient. It is also considered to be a natural anti-inflammatory through its ability to reduce tissue swelling. Hydrotherapy in conjunction with veterinary treatment can significantly improve the quality and

rate of healing following surgery or traumatic injury. After surgery the careful use of hydrotherapy can help with rehabilitation and increase the chance of a successful return to full fitness. Enhancing general health and fitness can aid convalescence and speed up recovery. Just before I left I asked if there would be any special offer for readers of the News, guess what? YES anyone that has a senior dog can have a free treatment with no obligation, how’s that? Not finished yet only for News readers 20% off grooming and 10€ off boarding and a free gift. I recommend the hydrotherapy.

The days they blew up Japan - where would it end? Continuing our series of reports on the second World War, this week we look at two other anniversaries over the last week - that of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and the second on Nagasaki in Japan. written by Geoff Heading Monday August 6th 1945 was the day that the nuclear age began 55 years ago last Thursday when the first atomic bomb, code named “Little Boy”, was dropped from B29 Enola Gay over the city of Hiroshima at 8.15 in the morning and detonated about 580 metres above the city, which was the headquarters of the Japanese 2nd army as well as a major communications centre and storage depot. This was followed up 3 days later by an attack on the city of Nagasaki by detonation of the second atomic bomb code named “Fat Man” dropped from B29 Bockscar on August the 9th - 55 years ago on Monday. Within 2 to 4 months after the bombs had been dropped between 90- 160,000 people had died of the acute effects of the
bombing in Hiroshima and 60 – 80,000 had died in Nagasaki with roughly half of the deaths occurring on the first day. Most of the dead were civilians. The bombs were developed under the Manhattan project, which was a collaboration between the USA the United Kingdom and Canada and was directed by the American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Little Boy was made with Uranium–235, a rare isotope which was produced in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Fat man with Plutonium-239 which was a synthetic element produced in nuclear reactors in Hanford, Washington. Both were tested at Alamagordo, New Mexico, in July 1945. On July 26th the allies had issued the Potsdam
declaration which outlined the terms of surrender that the allies would accept from Japan. It stated as an ultimatum that without unconditional surrender the allies would attack Japan “resulting in the inevitable and complete destruction of the Japanese armed forces and just as inevitably, the utter devastation of the Japanese homeland”. On July 28th the Japanese government rejected the declaration and on the 31st made it clear that the Japanese home islands would be defended at all costs. The decision to use the bombs was taken by United States President Truman in an effort to bring about a swift resolution to the war by causing great destruction and instilling the fear of further great devastation on the Japanese government and thereby
bring about the Japanese surrender. His broadcast after the Hiroshima bombing stated: “If they do not now accept our terms, they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth. Behind this air attack will follow sea and land forces in such numbers and power as they have not yet seen with the fighting skill of which they are already well aware”. The Japanese government still didn’t react to the Potsdam declaration so on August 9th the Soviet Union declared war on Japan invading Manchuria and the second bomb was detonated. On August 10th the Japanese presented a letter of protest to the US government via the Swiss government about the atomic bombings and on August 12th the Emperor
informed the royal family of his decision to surrender. His capitulation announcement was broadcast to the nation on August 15th thus bringing about the end of the Second World War. On a personal note regarding the ethics of unannounced nuclear warfare, one of the few things that my father told me about his war experiences was that he was preparing to be sent
to the Pacific in “Tiger Force” having fought in the Royal Navy from 1939 to 1945 against the Germans and Italians. His ship was sent to Hiroshima soon after the bomb had been dropped and the photo above was taken by him. He said he was sure that without the dropping of the bombs would have been killed and I would not have existed. I’m sure that could be said of many people.

ABOUT
Your guide to Malaga Feria ABBA! The first ever Feria held in Málaga was round about 1486, to celebrate the reconquering of the city. Basically, the Catholics managed to throw out the Moslems and this was seen as a huge triumph. Therefore, every year this event is celebrated in the form of the Málaga Feria.
So, what to expect! There are many ferias throughout the region, but the one held in Málaga is by far the biggest and the best and attracts around 6 million visitors. This year the feria has one day less and will run from August 13th to the 21st in a bid to save the town hall money. The feria will start with the opening speech at La Malagueta beach at ten to midnight, given by local singer Javier Ojeda, followed by a firework display at midnight and the concert of Miguel Bose (picture right), which expects to attract 50,000 people starting at twenty five past midnight. Also during the day and into the evening you can visit the Casetas (marquees) where you will
find the horsemen and women (Jinetes) of Andalucia. They are dressed in traditional costume and also the horses are dressed traditionally. Mind you, if you see them late in the day you might find them a bit wobbly!! All the horses have to be off the feria by 8pm due to animal welfare, so best to see them during the afternoon. Whilst at the casetas you will be able to buy food and see traditional dancing and music of various types ranging from Sevillanas, Rumbas, Fandango, Popular music, Cuban/Salsa plus Verdiales, which are unique folk dances from the various villages in Andalucia. Parking is plentiful
around the feria ground and in the town - just follow the parking signs. The Port can take 30,000 cars and this year an additional 11,000 spaces have been made available around Málaga…so there should be room for everyone. There are special buses laid on operating all day and night from the town centre to the casetas, thus allowing you to get about.
The famous band, Bjorn Again are appearing the Marbella Bullring on Wednesday August 18th starting at 8pm. Dubbed “The feelgood family night out of the year” you can dance to Dancing Queen, swoon to Chiquitita and belt out Money, Money, Money and Gimme, Gimme, Gimme to your hearts content. But don’t forget Waterloo, Mama Mia, Winner Takes it all and knowing me, knowing you among a whole host of others that you’ve come to know from the stage and film. Also starring is Ruth Lorenzo the Spanish headlines who hit the headlines on the UK X Factor and Becky Tate. Tickets from www.ticketmaster.es at €20 each

e Karate Kid BY HARALD ZWART Starring Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan It's yet another modern update for a 1980s classic but fans of the original Karate Kid won t feel let down. The remake pretty much follows the plot of the original although the big change is moving the location to China. Recently widowed Sherry Parker (Taraji P Henson) relocates to a new job with 12 year old son Dre (Smith) in tow. He is a fish out of water and before long is being bullied by the kids at his school. He is about to face a pasting when in steps maintenance man Mr Han (Chan), a former Kung Fu master with a tragedy in
his past. He sees a chance for redemption as he trains Dre in the art of kung fu and prepares him for a martial arts tournament where the boy can use his skill to humiliate his tormentors. There is some great action, a lot of humour and a moral heart to the tale. That, plus the
charming performances of the leads, have propelled this to box office success in the US. Jaden's parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, co-produced the film and Will gave his boy advice on how to carry off his screen kiss. This could well be the start of a new franchise.

Bond in Dragon remake
I love you Philip Morris
007 Daniel Craig has had his latest Bond outing put on hold, but will take the chance now to star in the Sony remake of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. David Fincher is directing the English language version of the movie, based on the Stieg Larsson best selling book - the Swedish version has already been a box office and DVD success. Robin Wright Penn is apparently interested in the role of magazine publisher Erika Berger and Fincher has been taking a close look at a number of young actresses to play the key role of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.
Outer Limits for big screen "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture." Words which will send a shiver down the spine of those old enough to be spooked by memories of the classic early 60s TV show "The Outer Limits". Troubled studio MGM has had to put the 23rd James Bond outing on the backburner while it seeks a buyer. The studio is burdened with big debts but is asset rich, with rights to the Bond movies and two planned Hobbit films. The studio's creditors have given it an extension until September to find a buyer, and the word is that MGM has ordered a script to be written for a big screen outing for the cult telly show.

W
hen does a true-life convicted conman and thief become a loveable rogue? When Hollywood comes knocking.
I
Love You Phillip Morris is the improbable but true story of a charismatic conman’s journey in which he is in constant trouble with the law, who brilliantly escapes from the Texan prison system on four separate occasions - and all in the name of love. Steve Russell is a mild mannered man in his fifties, currently serving out a 144 year prison sentence in a high security prison in Texas. This is not his first spell behind bars but if the Texas prison system has anything to do with it, it will be the first time he fails to escape. For Steven will do anything fto be with his soul mate and the love of his life, fellow prisoner Phillip Morris.
A
fter cellmate Phillip had been released for his crime of failing to return a hire car and Steven was released early on parole, the two went on a spending spree and high rolling lifestyle funded by an inventive money making scheme engineered by Steven, of which Phillip had no knowledge. Having lied his way into a finance director’s job, Steven used company funds to invest in interest paying accounts, pocketing 50% of the profit. The sums involved were huge and it was the opulent lifestyle of the couple that eventually brought prying eyes into the accounts of the company and subsequently exposing the pair - and Steven ended up back in jail.
S
teven couldn’t bear to be apart from his lover and so started a run of daring escapes from prison and subsequent recapture.
One time he had his bail bond reduced to an amount he could afford to pay by pretending to be a high court judge on the telephone. One escape involved stealing green marker pens from the prison art classes, which he then used to dye white prison clothes green so that he could masquerade as a prison doctor. His most daring escape has to be the time he faked symptoms of AIDS, falsified his medical records and persuaded doctors that he was ill enough to require hospital treatment. He escaped from his hospital bed and then faked notification of his own death to the prison authorities.
A
s Phillip Morris himself pointed out, the frauds and cons undertaken by Steven over the years were nearly always corporation fraud and that neither his escapes or crimes have ever been violent.
T
he release of the movie has highlighted the case and there is an organized campaign to reduce Steven’s sentence as it is deemed that the long jail sentence is a revenge act by a penal system that was made to look foolish and incompetent.
J
im Carrey plays the part of Steven Russell in “I love you Phillip Morris”, with Ewan McGregor taking the role of Phillip. The two leads are funny and look good together although McGregor’s American accent is a bit wayward at times. The scriptwriters have done well to create a story that leads people into a corner, then snaps them back out with a twist that you don’t expect and at the end of both the film and the real life story, you cannot help thinking that the conman deserves a break from his excessive final 144 year sentence.

Life is extreme right now, one minute you are in a safe confined area that is familiar and cosy and the next you are plummeted into the strange, the uncertain and the unknown. What is sure is that you have reached a crossroads in your life and now you are there it seems obvious the path you should now take. Trust your instincts as these will direct your boat to lighter and jollier shores, even if the weather seems dark and cloudy, the destination is not. There is a feeling about what is lacking or missing in your life that is causing you to deeply reflect about what you now need and what you will and will not accept from others. The end of a relationship is complete and you wish to move forward now with a brand new focus. This tense and intense energy is likely to continue for a few weeks more as it helps you to sort out your reactions from your true feelings and allows you the chance to align them with your thoughts. Life is not supposed to be as it always has been, it is changing because it is meant to and you are in a preparatory stage where eventually you will experience a complete turn around in one area of your life. The key is not to limit your options at the moment and remain on the middle path when faced with opposing points of view. This is likely to be a passionate and heated week so make sure that you have a positive outlet to express this fiery side of you. Determination is your virtue this week when against all seeming odds your creativity and urge to get your power back starts to shape your future. These are days of great courage when you are prepared to take a risk with your expression in order to create an emotional foundation based on solid truth. Although it is not easy the base will be firm and the foundations will stand the test of time and that is worth all the patience, heartache and effort. You are not a sign that tends to take things lightly even if you wear a frivolous smile, it can hide more complex emotions under the surface. There are a few questions that you need answers to and this is causing you to feel restless within. However, you are approaching a chance to alter the way you attach yourself to certain outcomes, one step at a time will take you to a place where you can have a brand new start. You are a social butterfly this week which causes the masses to be irresistibly drawn to you, expect many invites to flood in. Romance and love is highlighted and you could receive a pleasant surprise. You also have increased perception right now and have the ability to resolve conflicts and differences between yourself and another. Misunderstandings are sorted out and a little effort goes a long way in building bridges.

You may have spent weeks or even months pouring your energy into a particular project but now it seems as if the universe is asking you to let go of the reins just a little to allow room for some movement. Things are going rather well right now so this is the perfect time to take a step back and be objective about your life. A new chapter is ready to begin, you are on the brink of a new beginning, a door is closing but you are carrying all the experience and knowledge that you have gained over the last few years as you continue your journey onto pastures new. By the end of the week you will be feeling like a shopping spree and treating yourself to something new.
SAGITTARIUS It is the time to put your ideas into action, not the time to sit on the fence and observe, you have done enough of that recently. Silence is golden. Sometimes if you have a point to make, less is more and the silence can seem more deafening than shouting and bawling. Your emotions are peaking this week and you will feel intense and uncomfortable as a story naturally unfolds. You may not be told the whole plot and need to do more research and investigation to discover some missing links. Once someone shows you their hand you will be able to decide what it is you need to be doing. A certain record needs to be set straight and you need to make your peace with an issue that has remained unresolved. You are about to serve a bit of overdue justice to someone that needs it. There is no time now to shy away from rocking a boat that is already swaying, all you are doing is helping to steer it in the right direction. An energy is coming your way, urging you to break out of a rut or routine that has run its course and is no longer serving you well. Old habits come up for review.

As figs are in season big time, this is a deliciously different way of using them.
Grilled figs with Serrano ham and goats cheese Ingredients:
(serves 6)
● 12 black figs, halved lengthwise ● 250gr goats cheese ● 24 slices Serrano ham, sliced very thin and wide enough to wrap around the middle of each fig half ● 225ml balsamic vinegar, reduced by half ● 40gr walnut halves, toasted ● 24gr pomegranate seeds ● Baby lettuce leaves or mixed greens
Method ● Simmer the balsamic vinegar in a small sauce pan 5-7 minutes or until it is reduced by half.
Wrap a very thin slice of ham around the middle of the fig so that the flat side is smooth for grilling.
● Press a small quantity of goats cheese into the sliced side of the fig half.
● Heat a cast-iron grill on the cooker or barbecue until very hot. Brush the
face of the fig slightly with olive oil. Lay the figs face down on the grill for 20 seconds, rotate 45 degrees and cook for 20 seconds more. Turn the figs over and cook until warmed - about 1 minute.
To serve Place baby lettuce in the centre of an individual or large platter. Arrange figs around the lettuce, grilled
side up. Drizzle balsamic vinegar reduction over figs and around plate. Finish presentation with a
sprinkle of pomegranate seeds and toasted walnuts.

A brief history of fish and chips Marlow's Fish and Chip Restaurant and Take-away is situated in Los Hidalgos, La Duquessa Manilva, and has been frying top quality fish and chips for the past 2 years. The Marlow family were the first to introduce proper English style fish and chips to this area, when in 1966 Steve's father decided to open a fish and chip restaurant in Fuengirola. He discovered that at that time it was as good as impossible for a foreigner to open a business in Franco's Spain and decided to go down to Gibraltar and opened Irish Town Fisheries, which was the 1st dedicated fish and chip restaurant and takeaway on the Rock. Unfortunately Franco caught up with Mr Marlow and closed the
border in 1969 which changed the situation completely and soon after they sold up and returned to Leeds and opened Marlow's there. It was a great hit, winning the 1997 fish and chip shop of the year award. In 1998 Steve decided to move to southern Spain after selling Marlow's in Leeds and after involvement in several restaurant projects decided to open Marlow's in La Duquessa, where he has continued with the unique family formula of supplying best quality Cod and
Haddock and only Maris Piper potatoes for the authentic chip shop taste. They also serve Ribs as well as BBQ'd and Southern Fried Chicken and, during the winter months, a succulent roast between 1 and 5pm each Sunday for €8.75. Marlow's is a modern air-conditioned restaurant and take-away, with a large sunny terrace (covered when it is too hot) and is open from 1pm until 3.45pm and 6pm until 10pm weekdays and 1pm until 8pm Sunday. Guidelines for DIY genetics tests
Genuine all-over tan 'impossible' Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have bad news for sun-worshippers seeking the ultimate all-over tan - it's a physical impossibility because different parts of the body are much harder to brown in the sun. The team were investigating why skin cancers like melanoma tend to be found in different parts of the body even though they are all caused by exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UVB) sun rays. They asked 100 volunteers to go under a sun lamp to see how easily they tanned. After six tanning sessions the researchers
analysed the skin of two body areas - the back and buttock. Using scientific instruments they measured the precise depth of tan achieved. They found buttocks were particularly resistant to tanning, staying whiter than backs despite the same exposure. But this does not mean that it is more resilient to the sun's
harmful rays, the researchers said. The tan colour comes from the skin's production of melanin, a defence that blocks the skin from absorbing too much harmful UVB radiation. So buttocks need more sun protection against cancer, they warned. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said
RESEARCH
Young people lax about cholesterol checks A US study has found that barely half of all young men and women are screened for high LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol. Even among those with heart disease, fewer than 70 percent are screened. The study was based on an analysis of data on 2,587 young adults — including men aged 20 to 35 and women aged 20 to 45 — who participated in the 1999-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. A spokesman for the heart disease division at the Centres for Disease
Control and Prevention said young adults should be screened because heart disease is a chronic condition that can begin damaging blood vessels at an early age – as early as 10. He said there was also evidence that the earlier the intervention, the easier it is to turn around the process than it is at an older age, when the patient already has plaque and the
vessels are blocked. The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III recommends screening everyone beginning at age 20. The United States Preventive Services Task Force advocates a targeted approach, focusing on men aged 20 to 35 and women 20 to 45 who have heart disease or risk factors for it.
tanning is a sign that “your skin has already been damaged by UV and is your body's way of trying to limit any further damage”. He said for people with fair skin, freckles or lots of moles, tanning is very difficult without burning, and they should take extra care to protect their skin from sunburn.
Concerned about the availability of DIY genetic tests, the Human Genetics Commission (HGC) has launched guidelines for the industry. A growing number of private companies offer direct-toconsumer tests that estimate a person's risk of diseases such as cancer based on their genes. The HGC said buying kits online without counselling or enough information to interpret the results can leave people falsely reassured or unduly worried. The bulk of the tests available are offered by US companies but can be bought via the internet in any country. Individuals send off a cheek swab for lab analysis that will tell them their likelihood of developing a number of conditions such as heart disease, Alzheimer's, Huntington's or breast cancer. The industry is largely unregulated, which can mean patients are given potentially distressing information without clinical support. The HGC says tests for serious hereditary diseases - like Huntington's and breast cancer - should only be provided with the offer of counselling both before and after testing, and companies must make clear possible outcomes of taking a test are, and what patients can do about them.

Beauty Tip
Leave the germs at the gym If you answer “no” to any of the following questions, you could end up with one of the many skin infections that can spread like wildfire in athletic settings. Do you wash your hands before and after using the equipment? Do you take your own regularly cleaned mat for floor exercises? Do you shower with antibacterial soap and put on clean clothes immediately after your workout? Do you use only your own towels, razors, bar soap, water bottles? In the US, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, N.A.T.A., issued a position paper in June on the causes, prevention and treatment of skin diseases in athletes that could just as well apply to anyone who works out in a communal setting, be it a school or commercial gym. While the report concentrates on athletes, its findings apply to anyone who works out in a gym. And the infections picked up can be serious. They include MRSA, the potentially deadly staphylococcus infection that is resistant to most antibiotics- as well as athlete’s foot, jock itch, boils, impetigo, herpes simplex and ringworm, among others. It noted that after a workout, women tend not to shower at the facility, while men, who are more likely to shower, often fail to cleanse their entire bodies, including their feet. It said everyone should shower at the gym and put on clean clothes that are kept separate from the dirty ones. It said it was advisable to have two bags, one only for clean clothes, and one for dirty clothes. It also said people who pick up infections should stay away from the gym until cleared by a doctor. The report said if you plan to work out in a gym or use a locker room, before choosing a facility, you should quiz the management about the cleaning agents used and daily cleaning schedule for all surfaces and equipment. Antibacterial wipes or spray bottles should be provided and used by everyone to clean equipment after a workout.

Sometimes once is not enough
Sir Tom Jones's hopes that he would enter the record books as the oldest male singer to have a number one album in the UK charts were dashed on Sunday.
As Robbie Williams and new wife Ayda celebrate their nuptials it can be revealed that a second wedding is being planned The bride walked solo down the aisle, leaving guests wondering where the person that should be giving her away was. What they didn’t know was that 31year-old Ayda had been estranged from her father since the family split up and her parents divorced in 1982. A German born cousin said that none of the family had any contact with her father for years, stating that they didn’t even know where he was. But Turkish based Haldum Evecan received an
emotional telephone call from his daughter just hours before she was due to wed the singer and they are now busy planning a reunion at the singer’s £12 million Beverley Hills mansion. It is said that the Istanbul businessman has the full backing from Williams for the reunion with his daughter and that the couple are making plans for a second wedding in Turkey that will, this time, include the bride being given away by her father. During the hour long phone
call Evecan apparently apologised for not being there for her while she was growing up and not giving her anything. The bride told him that he had given her the best gift of all - that of life. Evecan asked his daughter whether he or Williams sang his favourite Sinatra song, “My Way” , best. She said that once he got to Beverley Hills she’d take them to a Karaoke bar where they could both sing the song and only then would she decide. We look forward to round two!

Sir Tom, aged 70, saw new album "Praise and Blame" head straight to No 2 the week before - his bid then to topple the record held by Bob Dylan, aged 68 at the time of his last No 1, was beaten off by rap singer Eminem. However, the album·s showing was a real fillip for the Welsh star after a senior executive of his new record company, Island, had earlier written a blistering email criticising the songs and demanding that the project be pulled. Autosalon Coin - where service still matters Workshop, showroom, collection service, 24 hour recovery and much more, all carried out in a professional manner.
A convertible once owned by Diana Dors - who didn't even have a driving licence at the time - is set to sell for up to £4million.
On top of that, the only stunts the US version could afford for their first episode was the presenters driving around a farm! The only thing that will be recognisable is the “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” feature that will remain but, without the Stig to
show them how it should be done, we’d bet Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise (pictured above) wouldn’t be making the same times. Some say......... but we say it just isn’t destined to work. The British version of the show is a huge hit in the US, earning it an Emmy in 2005 but this latest version is destined to be a huge flop. This will be the third attempt at an American version of the show with the last two being pulled at the last minute and never hitting the TV screens.
It’s official - speed cameras cause accidents DFT figures since 2001 estimates the number of crashes at 2.7 million with around one percent being caused as a direct result of motorists reactions to speed cameras – meaning the cameras have been involved in 27,900 accidents since 2001. Furthermore, a survey by UK insurance company LV found that more than 80 per cent of drivers said they look at their speedometers rather than the cars in front when they approach a speed camera, and five per cent admitted they brake suddenly to avoid getting a fine, risking rear-end shunts.
However, if you want to buy it now, it is set to cost you a cool £4 million when it goes up for auction on August 14th in Monterey, California, having been restored to its former glory by its present American owner.
A third of more than 1,500 motorists quizzed said they had witnessed an accident or a near-miss as a result of drivers' erratic behaviour caused by the machines. But don’t think that these menaces are going to disappear any time soon. Authorities are going to be spending even more money erecting a whole lot more cameras in even more ridiculous places. As an example, Bournemouth in Dorset seems to have a camera evey hundred yards or so on a road that is not bordered by houses - why? Revenue from fines for the council of course!

When much loved BBC programme Top Gear hit the screens Stateside, there was no Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May or The Stig - in their place are unknowns Tanner Foust, a racing driver; Rutledge Wood, a racing analyst and Adam Ferrara, a comedian.
This 1949 Delahaye Type 175 Roadster, built by French coachbuilders Saoutchic and one of only 51 made, was bought second-hand by film star Diana Dors when she was just 17 - at that time Britain’s answer to Jayne Mansfield had not taken her driving test.
The car cost her £5,000, which was a lot of money in those days, and she bought it from Sir John Gaul who had had it from new.

England beat Pakistan in 2nd test Trott and Strauss made half centuries in the latest test series held at Edgbaston. England beat Pakistan by 9 wickets, meaning that England now leads the series by two games to nil. Graeme Swann (pictured right) was named man of the match - the fifth time in the last 20 games. The third Test starts at the Oval in London on Wednesday August 18th.

England seamer Broad hit Zulqarnain Haider on the shoulder after throwing the ball at him as England struggled for wickets during the third day at Edgbaston. He has been fined 50% of his match fee by the International Cricket Council for “throwing the ball inappropriately” after pleading guilty. After the incident, Broad held up his hands in apology but the Pakistan side were in no mood to accept his apologies. Sri Lankan referee Ranjan Madugalle said of the incident: “"The actions of Stuart Broad were unacceptable. I understand the frustrations of a bowler in the heat of the moment but as an international sportsman one needs to control these emotions whatever may be the
situation and always respect the opponent. Stuart, by pleading guilty, realised his mistake and I'm sure he will not repeat the same again.” Salman Butt, Pakistan's Captain, told the BBC: "Cricket is a gentleman's game but I think England got frustrated. The throw was just one thing. There were plenty of words as well, that everyone could see, and people kicking the bowling marks. It's just frustration when you have been bowling too long. It's not good to see people throwing balls intentionally at others and not even apologising properly." Haider went on to hit 88 in Pakistan's 291-9. If Broad transgresses in such a way again, he could be slapped with a one-Test ban.

More Back Clutch of with a medals needed whimper than bang roar Argentina's David Nalbandian completed a successful comeback from injury by beating Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis 6-2 7-6 (7-4) in the final of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington. Nalbandian becomes the first player ranked outside the top 100 to win an ATP Tour title this year after falling to 117th with ongoing injuries and a hip operation. However, he will now be in the top 100 after winning his 11th career title and he says he intends to carry on winning. This makes it the third straight title for the Argentine. The former Australian Open runner-up, Bhagdatis was left to rue converting only two of his 11 break-point opportunities against an opponent he had beaten in three out of four previous meetings. Nalbandian broke Baghdatis four times in his first seven service games on his way to winning the title. "He's a pain when he plays good," Baghdatis said of Nalbandian. "He played really good. Well done David. I'm glad you came back, and I hope you have a great year."

This could make him the most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete if he wins just 4 more medals in the 8 competitions he has been entered into.

Sports DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again The attention of both the European Tour and the U S P G A Tour this week has been focused on the World Golf Championship at the magnificent Firestone Golf Club in Akron Ohio. World number two and three Mickelson and Westwood could each have taken the number one spot from Tiger Woods with the correct sequence of results and it seemed their hopes would be realised when Tiger struggled from the off. However Westwood, playing with Woods for the opening rounds, was forced to retire with a reoccurrence of his calf injury. Mickelson was in fine form for the first three rounds and was only four shots off the lead going in to the last round but had an inexplicable nightmare on Sunday with a 78 which was one worse than Tiger’s 77. The relatively unheralded Hunter Mahan made the running on the final day with a great 64 to finish on 12 under for the tournament and he was pressed all the way by the equally obscure Ryan Palmer. Mahan had some good luck on the huge 620 yard par five 16th when he overshot the green by some 70 yards and ended up in a flower bed. Somehow he was given a free drop onto a convenient grass lawn and managed to scramble a par five but for the life of me I cannot see how he was given such a ruling. Local rules for local players perhaps? Mahan has played well over the last few weeks though, thoroughly deserving his victory and will be a formidable member of the US Ryder Cup team which is now taking shape. Till next time Keep your head down Dave.

At the event in Dublin Tina Fletcher on Hallo Sailor and Nick Skelton on Carlo (pictured above) both completed clear rounds to ensure the team finished fifth at the last of the eight rounds.
