Sharing “plan” may make savings The UK government is reported to be considering sharing the use of aircraft carriers with France in an effort to cut military spending. This would ensure that one of two British ships and one French ship would always be on duty at sea. Each carrier would remain under its domestic command. If the proposal

WORLD What a scorcher...!

did anybody see the programme on the Tv last week called “The Great British Waste Menu”? What an eye-opener. It followed roughly the lines of the sister programme The Great British Menu where top uK chefs put together a menu for a big banquet and they compete against each other through knock-out rounds. Well, this time it was four chefs that had won the previous programmes and they had to go around bins at the backs of supermarkets and markets, go to farms that had the wrong shaped veg, restaurants that had overstocked etc etc. The amount of throwaway food they found that was either in date, on it’s sell-by date or just plainly the wrong shaped lettuce or whatever was criminal. In a world where people are starving this must be stopped. Even the chefs themselves were horrified at what they were finding. The British throw literally tons of food away every single day. A big problem is the so-called “Bogoffs”. Just because you can buy one and get a second one either free or at half price doesn’t necessarily make it a bargain. Can you freeze the second one? Is it sealed in such a way that it won’t go off in two days? Buying something to throw away a couple of days down the road is not a bargain - it’s a downright waste. If a tomato is the wrong shape, so what? Buy food by sight and smell and use it all up. Just because it’s sell-by date doesn’t mean you can’t eat it - it just racks up the supermarket profits. Buy well, eat well and save the plantes resources as well as money.

World Cup goes to Shanghai In an effort to persuade the Chinese to buy more Spanish products, Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero presented the World Cup at the Shanghai universal Expo where Spanish Day was celebrated on Monday. He told his hosts that the

The Guardia Civil began the raids on Friday in a joint operation with the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) aimed at dismantling British gangs who overrun the island each summer. It is believed the trade in class A drugs is
controlled by rival British gangs from Manchester and Liverpool who send out drug dealers to supply clubbers during the holiday season. The raid followed weeks of surveillance by local undercover officers.

Police violence claim in dispute following clash Secretary of state for foreign affairs Juan Pablo de la Iglesia said on Monday that the government has no proof that Moroccan police violently attacked the 14 Spaniards who took part in a peaceful protest in El Aujiun in Western Morocco on Saturday. After photos of a woman activist with black eyes appeared in the national press, the government announced it intended to ask Morocco for an explanation. The Moroccan government said that the protest, in support of independence for the Western Sahara, was illegal and unauthorised and that the Moroccan police had intervened to stop the Spanish protesters from being lynched by the local people who were angry with them for stirring up trouble. asked the protesters, who claimed they were being held prisoners in El Aujiun, to “respect the laws in force” The protesters were put on a ferry and arrived at the port of La Luz in the Canary Islands on Sunday, where they were met by some 50 supporters of independence for the Western Sahara. They were examined by doctors who said their injuries consisted of bruising and scratches and were not life threatening. The activists have said they intend to sue the Moroccan authorities.

Fresh attack on PM by foreign media The foreign press’s summer truce ended last week when The Economist decided Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is losing his grip, having failed to impose his will on Tomás Gómez, the tough leader of the Socialist Party's Madrid branch. Sr Gomez wants to run against Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre in the next regional election, but Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez fancies the position – with the PM's backing. Sr Gomez's refusal to stand aside has forced a party vote, to be held in October. The in-fighting has turned nasty recently,
with each side accusing the other of getting up to dirty tricks while Sr Zapatero looks on helplessly – a sure sign, according to The Economist, that he has lost the iron grip he once held on the Socialist Party. Sra Aguirre would probably have swept to victory anyway, as she has done in the past two regional
elections, so the Socialist dust-up can only be a bonus for her. If Sr Gomez wins the party vote, his victory will raise the question of whether Sr Zapatero should run next time around. With the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, ten points ahead in the polls,
Call for ETA truce grows The Basque Left, known as the abertzale , former supporter of the terrorist group ETA is now pressuring it to call a truce. The Interior Ministry has said an announcement to that effect could be made on September 27th, the Day of the Basque Soldier. ETA has been inactive for more than a year and observers believe it needs a truce to relieve the pressure not only from the abertzale but from international groups and individuals, such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson and the Nelson Mandela Foundation who
have taken its side in the past. ETA adviser Brian Currin, the South African lawyer who was instrumental in the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, has been pressuring the group since Easter to call a “permanent and verifiable truce”, like the one declared by the IRA as a first step to ending the violence in Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, the Partido
Popular's spokesman in the European Parliament, Jaime Mayor Oreja, has said Mr Currin's call for a truce is a ploy to enable ETA sympathisers to stand in the municipal elections next May. Sr Oreja, a former Interior Minister, has also accused the government of resuming secret peace talks with ETA, which were broken off when the group bombed a car park at Madrid airport on December 30, 2006, killing two people.
and Sr Zapatero's popularity at the lowest it's been since March 2004, the PM only has one consolation, according to The Economist – the PP leader is even less popular. The magazine reckons that victory at the next election will go to whichever party is brave enough to ditch its leader.
Urban planning frauds investigated The tax collection agency is investigating urban planning irregularities in 150 municipalities in Andalucia, Valencia, Madrid and Catalonia. Its inspectors are looking at the reclassification of land
for building and the promoters who eventually obtained that land. They are also investigating construction in remote areas. A spokesman said the municipalities were not always to blame for the
irregularities, it was often promoters who had exceeded the plans presented to obtain the licences by building more or handing out irregular sub-contracts, among other things.

Iberia, which is merging with British Airways (BA), announced a profit in the second quarter of 2010 of €31 million, as opposed to the €73 million euro loss for the same period of 2009. An airline spokesman said costs had been reduced by 5.9% in the first half of 2010, by "lowering spending on fuel, the good results of seat supply cuts, and cost-containment measures". The merger of Iberia and BA will create one of the world's biggest airline groups. The merger, which was provisionally agreed in November last year, is expected to be completed this year. MADRID

Defence Ministry uses Franco decree The Unified Military Association (AUME) has accused the defence ministry of using a decree proposed by Franco's chosen successor, Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, in 1962 and signed by Franco himself to stop members of the military from petitioning the head of state or government in this case, about the cuts in their salaries which prime minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero decreed in June. Admiral Carrero Blanco was killed by an ETA bomb which exploded under his car on December 20th, 1973.

Chile begins drilling mine rescue shaft Engineers have begun drilling the rescue shaft through which they hope to eventually free the 33 men trapped for the past three weeks 700m underground in a collapsed gold mine about 800km north of the capital, Santiago. A huge Australian-made "Strata 950" excavator began work late on Monday. The machine dug a narrow test hole, which will gradually be deepened and expanded to a width of about 60cm. The miners will have to clear thousands of tonnes of falling debris in round-the-clock shifts, although officials say the men are in no danger of being hit. The rescue shaft is likely to take 90 to 120 days to complete. Then a capsule can be lowered

down to retrieve the miners one by one. Mining minister Laurence Golborne had said up to 10 options were being considered in the efforts to rescue the men, but he dismissed suggestions they could be out within a month. At present, rescue workers are using three narrow shafts to send essential supplies to the trapped men, and ensure
they have adequate ventilation. One of the men has some medical training and has been able to give his colleagues vaccinations against tetanus. They will be sent flu vaccinations later this week. Quick-dry clothing has also been sent down, after some of the miners said they were suffering from skin conditions in the hot, wet conditions. Others have been sent mats to sleep on to protect them from the
Oz result too South Sudan to demob child soldiers close to call The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in Southern Sudan has pledged to demobilise all child soldiers by the end of the year, and has established a child protection unit to fulfil the pledge. SPLA chief of staff James Hoth said the force could not recruit child soldiers because it was not at war. He said: "We are fighting for our children so that they can enjoy their freedom in their own country, and our future lies with the children." Lise Grande, the UN's humanitarian co-ordinator, welcomed the SPLA's move and acknowledged "the impressive steps forward that the SPLA have taken". But she added: "Taking a
liberation army and transforming it into a professional army is a long road to walk." The UN children's agency estimates that the SPLA, thought to have already discharged more than 20,000 children, still includes about 900 in its ranks. South Sudan, which fought a long civil war against the north, is to hold an independence referendum in January.
Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard has rejected a new election to avoid a hung parliament. In her first major speech since elections on August 21st failed to deliver a clear winner, she said she could offer stability. The prime minister, widely attacked for her putsch against former leader Kevin Rudd which brought her to power a month before the elections, insisted that she "stood ready to form government". Speaking in Canberra she said: "What is needed more than anything now is continuity. Continuity, certainty and delivery." Analysts said her comments were aimed at garnering the support of
four independent members of parliament, who appear to hold the balance of power amid some talk of holding a new vote. The count continues, as the margin of victory between the two parties remains too close to call. Conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott had claimed the upper hand as counting briefly gave his party more votes and parliamentary seats than Labor, but Labor had edged ahead by Tuesday morning. Powerful business lobbies, in mining and telecoms, are backing the opposition which has pledged to drop a proposed tax on mining and a government-funded broadband network.
Strippers in deckchair picket protest Several bikini-clad Ohio strippers are protesting every Sunday outside a church whose members want to put their strip club out of business. The congregation had photographed customers' number plates and asked if
their wives knew where they were. The strippers have been sitting in deckchairs outside New Beginnings Ministries church in Warsaw, Ohio, some holding signs bearing Christian messages. The club's owner has told
Pastor Bill Dunfee he will call off his protest if the church stops demonstrations. But Mr Dunfee said:"As a Christian community, we cannot share territory with the devil. Light and darkness cannot exist together, so
the Fox Hole has got to go." The club is about nine miles from the church. The confrontations have reportedly been largely friendly, with Mr Dunfee and congregants chatting to the strippers outside the church.
damp ground. They have also been sent mp3 players to listen to music and a small screen, so they can watch football matches. On Sunday, the miners were each able to speak to family members for one minute by telephone. Four experts from Nasa are due to arrive at the mine this week at the request of the Chilean authorities, to advise the miners and rescuers on how to cope with their situation.
Children hit by flood illnesses Children in Pakistan are bearing the brunt of waterborne illnesses spreading because of the floods, the World Health Organization said on Monday. The flood waters are beginning to drain away to the Arabian Sea but inundations remain in parts of Sindh province.
The young have been especially affected by a rise in acute cases of diarrhoea and malaria from stagnant water. Few of the eight million people displaced have clean drinking water. As well as the rise in children being affected by water-borne diseases, about 72,000 young people have severe malnutrition, UN officials said. More than 1,600 people died and about 17 million of Pakistan's 166 million people have been affected by the disaster.

Iranian newspaper insults Carla Bruni The Iranian newspaper Kayhan has called Carla Bruni, France's first lady, a “prostitute” in retaliation for her attack on Iran's plan to stone a woman to death. The President's wife is playing an active role in a campaign to save the life of 43-year-old mother of two, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who is accused of cheating on her husband and then helping to kill him. She is now facing capital punishment for her crimes. France has urged the European Union to

Mexico sacks 10% of police force The federal police force in Mexico has sacked almost 10% of its officers over this year for corruption, incompetence or links to organised crime. Commissioner Facundo Rosas said 3,200 officers had been fired and more than 1,000 others were facing disciplinary action and could also lose their
jobs. He added that none of the officers would be allowed to work in police forces at local, state or federal levels. Many of those removed are now facing criminal charges, after being accused by subordinates of having links to drug cartels in Ciudad Juarez, the country's most violent
city. The commissioner said this was only the first stage of a purge to rid of the country’s police forces of corruption and make its 34,500 officers more reliable, as they were an integral part of the country's security forces. The war against the drug cartels has left some 25,000 people dead since
President Felipe Calderon came to power in December 2006, when he launched an all-out war against the drug cartels. In many parts of the country he has deployed the army against the traffickers despite the opposition of many of his critics.
Woman charged after dogs maul girl Tayside police have charged a 33-year-old woman under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 after her two Rottweilers attacked a 10-year-old girl riding her bike in a Dundee street. Rhianna Kidd underwent three hours of reconstructive surgery to pin a fractured jaw on
Sunday night and received treatment for bites to her arms and legs. Her grandmother Irene Grady ran out of her house after seeing one of the Rottweilers drag Rhianna off her bike. The dogs were put down on Monday evening after the owner gave permission.

Miliband's criticisms of the New Labour project. Former Labour leader Lord Kinnock, who is backing Ed Miliband in the contest, said in his letter to The Times newspaper that Lord Mandelson was "indulging in the sort of personalised factionalism that has inflicted such damage on our party in ancient and modern
history". Former business secretary Lord Mandelson has said Labour could be left in an "electoral cul-desac" if its next leader tried to create a "pre-New Labour party" - seen as a criticism of Ed Miliband. The peer also accused Lord Hattersley and Lord Kinnock of wanting to "hark back to a previous age".

The Un's climate science body needs stricter checks to prevent damage to the organisation's credibility, an independent review committee has concluded. The committee stressed that previous science assessments by the intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (iPCC) had been largely successful, but it said the body's response to revelations of errors in its 2007 report had been "slow and inadequate". it called for transparency and guidelines to ensure iPCC leaders were not seen as advocating specific climate policies. Ahead of a campaign event in London, Labour leadership candidate Ed Balls said the "Miliband soap opera" and the debates about Old and New Labour detracted from the issues at stake. He called for Labour to focus more on the issue of housing. Mr Balls, the shadow education secretary, said the government should use a £12bn "windfall" available because public borrowing for 2009-10 came in at £155bn lower than the earlier forecast of £167bn - to create more homes. Russia and China have agreed to set up the first cross-border protection zone for rare Siberian tigers. Only about 500 of the big cats are thought to be left in the wild. The zone will straddle the border along China's Jilin province and Russia's Primorsky Krai area, where both sides will enforce anti-poaching measures and fight the illegal logging that has shrunk the tigers’ natural habitat. Both countries will also adopt a joint monitoring system to track tiger numbers.

A superbug which infected four babies at University College London Hospital neonatal unit contributed to the death of one of them. The babies were infected with the so-called "gramnegative" bacterium in July. The babies were all described as "seriously ill" having been born prematurely and a number of factors, including the bug, led to the death of one of them. Two others died of unrelated causes. One baby survived. The babies were among 15 at the unit found to be carrying several types of bacteria, of whom 13 had bugs resistant to treatment. Of those, nine were carrying bacteria on their skin and four were found to have it in their blood streams. The hospital said it did all that could be done to clear the infection and there have been no further outbreaks. A Health Protection Agency spokesman said it was not uncommon to see outbreaks of infection in neonatal units caused by a range of bacteria with some level of antibiotic resistance. He added: "Premature babies are vulnerable to these types of infection, which are opportunistic and tend to affect the vulnerable, very young, elderly or those with a weakened immune system.
'70 is the new 50' Sir Cliff Richard, set to turn 70 on October 14th, told a UK newspaper that the the secret of his eternal youth is tennis three times a week, two glasses of red wine a day and a daily dose of lecithin – a supplement derived from soya beans, meat and eggs – which allegedly restricts the body’s ability to form fat. Sir Cliff, who has bared himself for his 2011 calendar, said he'd heard that 60 is the new 40 “so I am making 70 the new 50”.
His waist still measures 30in, the same as 30 years ago, and he weighs 10st 7lb. He once tried Botox to smooth the wrinkles around his eyes, but said he didn’t like the results. Immigrants missing off Malaga coast Maritime rescue teams are searching for a boat carrying 37 immigrants, four of them women, which was last seen leaving Alhucemas in Morocco on Saturday. The Spanish authorities were alerted by a relative of one of the immigrants on board after he failed to make contact on his mobile phone. It is believed the boat is adrift in the area known as the Mar de Alboran off the coast of
Malaga but it had still not been sighted by press time. On Monday, another two boats which were carrying 18 Moroccans arrived safe and sound in La Fabriquillas in the Cabo de Gata natural park. Two days earlier a Spanish ferry and a
Speed cops have a ball Despite threats of stiff fines, speed radar traps and the Traffic Authority's ongoing campaign to get people to drive more slowly, this year's vacation period has filled the province's coffers as drivers put their foot down and head for home. Last week – officially the last week of the holidays –
the traffic cops nabbed 246 cars for speeding on Malaga's roads – at the average rate of 35 a day. They were the lucky ones who didn't get caught up in the traffic jams caused by the hundreds of thousands of cars on the move over the last holiday weekend.
Cypriot ferry rescued 57 immigrants in a boat adrift some 50 miles south of Motril in Granada province. They were from Bangladesh and Somalia – 47 were taken to Alhucemas in Morocco and the remaining 10 were taken to
Melilla. Meanwhile, a lifeboat from Ceuta picked up 12 Moroccans who were trying to reach the Spanish coast on two inflatable rafts, described by one rescuer as being “like those used by children to play on the beach”.
Malaga one of the most deforested
More cars but older
Once so densely forested that squirrels could travel from one province to another other without ever touching the ground, Malaga is now one of the most deforested provinces with less than 30% of its surface covered by trees. According to the Environment Ministry this is partly due to climate changes over the centuries, but human beings have been more to blame in the past few decades. In Andalucia only Huelva province has managed to preserve large areas of forest, which cover about 60% of its surface.
Option to buy gains ground With mortgages out of most people's reach these days, would-be homeowners are turning to renting with the option to buy. This suits property owners who are finding it difficult to sell – in addition to the monthly
income, they know the tenants will look after the property they eventually hope to own. However, the president of Malaga's Estate Agents Association, Cayetano Rengel, advises people to
read the small print before they enter into an option to buy contract. “Everything has to be well tied down – the price, the period of time for the sale and who pays the notary fees.”

The number of cars in Malaga province continues to grow – but thanks to the economic crisis a third of the 1,048,257 currently on the road are at least 10 years old. The recent rise in IVA
and the banks' reluctance to lend money to buy new cars has produced a boom in sales of cheap secondhand cars, with buyers looking for bargains in the €1,000-€2,000 price range.
Younger men and women are increasingly looking to motorbikes and scooters to solve their transport problems – they're cheaper and more manoeuvrable in towns and cities.

PAD was founded 14 years ago by a group of animal lovers and currently finds homes for some 500 cats and 300 dogs every year, many of which are sent to Germany. PAD's monthly vets' bills amount to €6,000 while another €17,000 is spent on food, salaries and maintenance.
Spokeswoman Chantal Lancelot said donations had been dropping for the past two years as more and more foreigners return home because of the economic situation. She convinced her mother to buy the land PAD is located on and the association will pay a nominal rent that will

Half the streets in the small town of Bobadilla Estacion in Antequera have been without electricity since thieves removed 1,500 and 2,000 metres of copper cable from the public lighting system. The theft happened in a sparsely populated area on the edge of the town near the fairground and the sports ground and was not immediately noticed.
Black year for the lynx The breeding programme in captivity for the Iberian lynx has been hit by a renal disease which has so far killed four lynxes – called Ecologico, Garfio, Cromo and Arcex – and has affected half of the adult cats in the programme. The programme began in 2003 and the first lynx was born in captivity in 2005. Each year has seen the birth of
several cubs, not all of which have survived – but last year was undoubtedly the worst, when half of the the 78 lynxes in captivity suffered the disease.
Mayor Antonio Montenegro said on Monday that a roll of copper cable had been delivered and lighting would be restored as soon as possible.
The vets overseeing the programme said the renal problem was probably caused by a supplement of vitamin D which the animals had been taking.

Ten best places to live on the Costa It would seem US First Lady Michelle Obama did not choose to spend her brief Costa holiday in Benahavis by accident. This small town - just over 4,300 inhabitants, most of them foreigners - nestling in the mountains inland from the coast, has just been elected one of the places with the best quality of life on the Costa del Sol. Starting out from a reference value of 100, the Synthetic Indicator of Wellbeing elaborated by Unicaja's Economic
Doctors abandon Malaga Despite a general shortage of medical staff in the province, low wages, temporary contracts and being moved around from hospitals to health centres and back again are forcing many doctors and nurses to seek a better life elsewhere. Andalucia is second from the bottom of the list of worst paid medical staff in Spain, above Cantabria. A doctor's average salary is 45,500, some 13,000 less than the average salary in the Basque Country and nearly 20,000 less than the average in Melilla and Ceuta. As a result, there has been a steady drain of doctors and nurses, many of whom opt for nearby Murcia and Extremadura, in order to be not too far away from their families. However, not only higher salaries but valuable experience in research and specialisation tempt many to head for the UK and Portugal, which top the list for doctors moving abroad.
Analysts of Andalucia put Rincon de la Victoria at the top of the list (117.29), followed by Benalmadena (115.42), Marbella (114.13), Malaga (112.60), Alhaurin de la Torre (112.36), Benahavis (111.07), Ronda (110.84), Antequera (109.44), Fuengirola (107.19) and Velez-Malaga (106.57). Hottest August on record It has not been the hottest August since records began in 1942 because of the high temperatures but because of the minimum ones. Between 1942 and 2008, the average number of minimum temperatures registered above 20ºC was 47 per year. During the same period, the average number above 22ºC was 17. So far this year, those numbers have been 60 and 37 respectively. As regards average maximum temperature, this August has been one of the three hottest since 1942. MIJAS COSTA

General José María Torroijos landed here in December 1831 to lead an unsuccessful uprising against Ferdinand VII. The Phoenicians had arrived there many centuries earlier to found Mijas.

The taxman cometh
L
hen the taxman comes, he may not give what many would consider enough fair warning. He will just slip into your bank account, take what he says is owed to him and let you figure out your next move. This is what has been taking place over the past few months as the Spanish Treasury clamps down on those who owe the government money. With the government grappling with a stillinflated deficit and the economy almost at a standstill, there’s a lot of money to be collected from those who haven’t paid their share.
ooking over my columns the other day, I realised I’ve written a lot about the Civil War, the Transition, Franco, King Juan Carlos and Zapatero, but little about the dictatorship itself. I know how interested most EU expats are in the war so here’s hoping they’re just as interested in knowing more about the 36 long years of the Franco dictatorship, because that’s what I’ll be writing about over the next few weeks. When I can leave Zapatero alone, that is.
F
ranco did many bad things but he also did some good. And here Mark Antony’s words about Caesar are very apt – the evil that men do lives on, the good is oft interred with their bones. A short while ago, one of Franco’s grandsons said he couldn’t understand the current demonising of his grandfather, when he had done so much good – building roads and railways, among other things. No doubt the Republicans would have done the same if they’d won the war – and they would probably have killed off their enemies just as Franco did – but that’s another story.
B
ut where to turn to find reliable facts and figures about the Franco years in these days of ultra-political correctness and the Historical Memory Law, which has led to the discovery of more and more mass graves of the people he executed during and after the war? However, just to show how one-sided the “dignifying of Franco's victims” is, a few months ago the bones of some 20-odd Republican soldiers were dug up in the region where the battle of the Ebro took place. They were reverentially unearthed – until it was discovered that about half of them were wearing Franco uniforms. All the bones – including the Republican ones – were promptly abandoned in boxes in an unused church. The mayor of the town demanded their removal or he “would put them back in the earth whence they came”. Moral of the story – some bones are more deserving of our reverence than others.
I
t was the pro-government newspaper, El Pais, which came to my rescue. It’s running a series of stories on pro-Franco writers and historians entitled “Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. This past Sunday, the subject was controversial historian Pio Moa, loathed by the Left because he insists it was the leftwing politicians of the Second Republic that brought on the war, with their
insistence on revolution rather than reform – which frightened the Right into action.
O
n one anniversary of the start of the Civil War, Moa wrote: “Today is July 18th, the anniversary of the legitimate uprising against an illegitimate government-regime …. which led to the longest period of peace that Spain has lived for many centuries, also the greatest prosperity, the abandoning of old hatreds and, in short, democracy.”
O
n digging up Franco’s victims, he wrote: “One of the most outrageous lies of the enemies of justice and democracy disguised today as antiFrancoists is precisely their invocation of ‘the dignity of the victims of Franco’.” But who were those victims? Among those shot and imprisoned by the Franco regime there was a high number of Chekists (Republican political police named after the forerunner of the KGB) and the perpetrators of really sadistic crimes, hired assassins abandoned by their masters who had fled abroad with huge amounts of treasure stolen from the Spanish people.
A
fter accusing the Socialists of using dirty tricks to win the 2004 general election (manipulating the Madrid train bombings to bring out the anti-war faction), he later wrote: “Since 2004, we have had a mafioso government, that is, illegal and immoral, violator of the Constitution, ally of terrorists (ETA), separatists, totalitarian regimes like Cuba or threatening tyrannies like Morocco, underminer of the legal system and the family, promoter of all forms of corruption, proclaiming itself the true heir of the ‘red’ Popular Front which caused the Civil War.
T
he El Pais article told me something I didn’t know about Pio Moa – in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was a radical opponent of the Franco regime, not just in words but in deeds. He risked jail by joining the banned Spanish Communist Party. And he risked his life when he later joined the Maoist terrorist organisation, GRAPO. He recalled this period of his life in “About a Time and a Country: The Violent Left”. After the transition to democracy, Moa’s political opinions became increasingly conservative.
K
nowing how much left-wing historians, including one of my favourites, Paul Preston, hated him, I was surprised to find that Stanley G Payne, an American historian and expert on Fascism who is much respected in his field, has praised Moa for daring to speak up about a period of Spanish history that is taboo today, and for criticising those who are doing their best to sweep lots of unpalatable truths under the carpet.
I
will let Mr Payne explain his reasons as only he can do in my next column.

ccording to the AEAT tax collection agency, inspectors believe that the amount of unpaid taxes by private citizens that have accumulated over the years is so high that it could reach into the billions. For many decades, Spain had been burdened by a bureaucracy-clogged tax collection regimen hampered by a nonautomated record-keeping system and lack of personnel and commitment. Tax evaders took advantage of this situation by fudging their accounting, putting down more deductibles than allowed, and stashing away cash in other places just to keep the government from getting their money. Spain had one of the weakest collection systems in Europe so that only the boldest, most outlandish cases of evasion were ever prosecuted. For those who owed a few thousand euros, it would take years before the taxman would come knocking on the door and that was only if by chance the statute of limitations on collections hadn't run out. But now that seems to be changing and is being done so very quietly.
L
ast month, one of my good mates asked me to accompany him to the AEAT tax office in Madrid after he went to pay his rent and found that his bank account had been frozen by the government. My American friend isn’t too swift with his Spanish and wanted me to go along so I could interpret anything he couldn’t explain. The lady auditor at the AEAT office was pleasant and understanding (aren’t all tax auditors suppose to be evil and nasty?), and explained to my mate that he owed more than €1,000, plus interest, stemming from income he had earned as an English teacher, which he didn’t report, but that the school that he worked for two years ago did. He argued that he had not received any prior notice from the AEAT advising him that his account ran the risked of being blocked otherwise he would have taken action. The lady countered that the notice had been sent by certified post - those were the yellow pieces of paper he had ignored in his post box - and his case by law had been listed in the deadbeat column published in the official BOE gazette. Who in the heck reads the BOE? She was kind enough to unblock his account and allowed him to make arrangements to pay “less than half”
of the debt through financing. A colleague had a similar problem and also discovered his bank account had been frozen a few weeks ago.
B
ut there are more serious cases. Last month some 1,500 account holders at the Swiss bank HSBC were issued summons to appear before AEAT auditors to see whether their money deposits in Switzerland actually amounted to evasion. AEAT had given the holders of an estimated 3,000 HSBC accounts a June 30th deadline to clear up their situation and pay any due taxes on the deposits or face legal action. It is expected that many will be prosecuted for evasion within the coming months. And this summer, we learned about the extraordinary investigation being conducted into the finances of octogenarian Catalan beer baron Demetrio Carceller Sr., who for the past 15 years had misled Treasury officials into thinking that his main residence was in Portugal to avoid paying high taxes on his fortunes (The News, July 14th). Investigators believe that Carceller, the owner of Damm brewery, stashed away some €500 million in offshore accounts. His advanced age has kept him out of prison so far, but his assets have been frozen.
A
s the old adage goes, death and taxes are the only two things that can be certain in life. There are many people in Spain who have made a lot of money since this country joined the European Union. And even more so when the euro was introduced and property speculation became financial wizardry. It is admirable that the government has decided to take the upper hand and go after those who owe AEAT. But at the same time it is disheartening that the Treasury’s current wrath has only been abetted by the government’s own disastrous finances. Spain’s tax collection system needed rigorous overhaul years ago. If that had happened, then maybe the Spanish government would have had a bigger cushion to soften the fiscal wallop and citizens could feel more at ease knowing that they had already paid their fair share.

I am actually admitting that I’m neither a War baby nor a child of the Swinging Sixties, I am – yes, yes get it out – I am a child of the Helen Reddy revolution. Some of you may even have heard me as I hurtle past in my little car, Vera, with "I am Woman" revolutionising the Spanish Senoritas. And it started me wondering what other songs do I have in my library that mean so much to me. It was then whilst dusting off my CDs that I realised I could take a walk down memory lane and actually categorise my life by the music that I was listening to at the time. Is this simply my little foible or are there others out there who can follow their joys and woes by the CDs that affected them. Is this an age thing or is it simply something that you have to be of a certain age to understand, possibly youngsters today have not had the Life experiences yet to start their own musical history. I know my introduction to
Stargazing
music started when I was very young and I do remember Mother and Grandma singing to me when I was small. Grandma was always old time music hall and I have recently unearthed such things as "She Had To Go And Loose It At The Astor" see, even then songs were getting racy! I even can admit to knowing all of the words to Tommy Cooper’s "Don’t jump off the roof Dad" which has had several airings at friends’ weddings. But it was only later that I started to amass my own collection. I can remember that it started with John Leyton and "Johnny remember me" and yes, I know the words to that too. My first marriage resulted in lots of Carpenters, Bread, Gladys Night and several LPs of Neil Diamond. All of which were played and replayed when the marriage ended. So many songs that could raise you up or make you cry. I will still admit to "Rainy Days and Mondays" being sung quite a few times on winter mornings on the way to work. In between husbands Hot Chocolate and "You Sexy Thing", Tina Turner and "Nutbush City Limits" were often the songs I boogied the night away to. Now happily married again my music style has grown to
include such as Il Divo, Katherine Jenkins and even Cold Play and Scouting for Girls. My child often despairs of admitting that the songs he’s getting are really for his MUM. I know that I can listen to three full run through of "Summer Of 69" to get me from the bins by the river to home! And yes we do have our song, you may not remember Dan Hill and "Sometimes When We Touch" but for our first real date I had bought him a present and, as I presented it to him he handed me exactly the same that he had bought me. How could we have anything else. I am so glad as I realise how full and rich my musical life is, there is still so much out there that can still make me laugh – and make me cry. And even though there are many who decry Modern Music, there will always be certain songsters who have the talent to interpret a song to ensure that it means something for the listener and so adopt it as their own. So I hope that music will always be an important part of my life and I am grateful that there is so much that enriches and lifts the spirits. Who knows how my Library will expand – but can you say the same? Can you also say that you know your Music Timeline?
Jupiter, the return of the King Have you noticed the very bright ‘Star’ rising in the East at around 10.00pm? It is not a star but is the planet Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. And this month Jupiter comes its closest to the Earth and even through binoculars or a small telescope Jupiter is a marvellous sight.
a thing; he was found guilty and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. It was only in 1992 that the Pope issued a public apology to Galileo announcing that he was right after all.
But unlike the Earth, Jupiter is not made from solid rock but instead is nothing more than a giant ball of mostly hydrogen gas. There is no solid core in Jupiter; it is just a massive amount of hydrogen that has formed itself into this giant ball.
In 1995 NASA sent a space probe to Jupiter to take very high resolution photographs of it and its Moons and it was Europa that became the most interesting. Europa is completely covered with ice almost like an egg shell, but the ice contains cracks on its surface. These cracks are most likely caused by a liquid ocean beneath the ice that is breaking its way through to the surface. NASA pondered on what could be keeping the ocean from freezing up and they believe that it must be coming from thermal vents deep below the oceans. We have exactly the same thermal vents below our oceans and living around them is a whole eco system of crabs, shrimps and other strange life forms. Scientists believe that the same conditions probably exist on Europa so in 2020 NASA intend to land a probe onto the ice. This probe, which is already under construction, will then heat up and melt its way through the ice, eventually it will drop into the ocean beneath where it will convert into a submarine and will swim around under the ice sending live TV pictures back to Earth. I have got €50 here and now that says that here they will find extra terrestrial life, under the ice on Europa!
Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun; it takes nearly 12 years to orbit the Sun once but it rotates very quickly about its axis, a day on Jupiter is only 10 hours long and because it rotates so quickly it is bulging at the equator and is flattened at the poles. This distortion can easily be seen in binoculars or a telescope. Jupiter has over 63 natural moons orbiting around it but four of them, Callisto, Ganymede, Io and Europa can easily be seen from Earth. Ganymede is the biggest moon in the solar system it is almost as big as Mars. It was the Italian astronomer Galileo who first spotted these moons circling around Jupiter in 1609 and because of this he proposed the idea that the Earth was not the centre of the Universe but instead was just another planet orbiting the Sun. He was arrested and tried by the Catholic Church for heresy for suggesting such

Dear David, My problem is as follows: We have a Golden Cocker Spaniel of about 10 years of age. He has always been a great part of the family and we have never had any concerns regarding his behaviour at all. Yesterday we celebrated our son's 1st birthday and on 2 separate occasions he mounted a child and began humping him. The first child was only 3 years old and whilst the other was older he actually scratched the boy's back. He was persistent enough in his action to shock and worry us quite badly. We have never really seen this behaviour before although our friends said that when they looked after him previously he humped their boys on several occasions. He is exercised every day - a little less than we did when he was younger but we still maintain somewhere between 20 minutes to an hour of walks a day. We have even recently moved to a ground floor apartment with a garden to ensure that he gets enough stimulation from being able to sniff around and get fresh air when he needs it. He was castrated when he was very young. In general he is good with children but we do not want to risk a similar scenario happening again we will have increasing amounts of children in the house over the coming years. Thanks for any advice that you can offer. Jenny.
Calling Clubs and Societies The News has had a number of people, recently arrived in the area, walking through our door with questions about where they can go to meet new friends and find something to do. We have also had
clubs asking why we don’t advertise their events. The simple answer is; “We do” but you need to tell us what your club / society /event is all about! Call us on 952 454 491 to let our readers know.
Dear Jenny I would recommend that you visit your vet to explain your problem and the vet might well apply a hormone therapy. Apart from medical intervention there is no cure for this behaviour and it will get worse. Long walks as you describe make no difference whatsoever. This is a learned behaviour and can be extremely dangerous. Many people think that to castrate a dog is the end of their problems but this is a grave misconception. I am concerned and must stress that your dog can never be trusted with any children, even supervised. The safest bet with your dog is to crate him in the home, or fit baby gates (obtainable from Leroy Merlin) so that the children can be safe or keep him outside. I would mention that when a woman menustrates this can have an effect on your dog and one should keep in mind that blood is mating time in the animal world. I would like to ask you some questions and offer further advice, please send me your telephone number. Regards David

A Fête Worse an Death The confrontation occurred when Allison had invited me to dinner to meet her daughter, around Easter time, when she had visited from university.
T
he dinner had gone well, though a bit tense and formal, until Allison had departed to make some coffee. During the dinner Julia had been sniping at anything I’d said and I’d thought that this was just a bit of jealousy because of the raport between Allison and me. “Tom, you’ll never replace my father you know, my Mum loved him and will never love another man. You’re just taking advantage of her grief and loneliness,” she’d suddenly said regarding me with an intense look. I was a bit surprised at such an outburst but finally replied, “Julia, I can understand that you are concerned about your mother, but please understand that I have a deep affection for her and would never do anything to hurt her. We
enjoy each other’s company and I don’t know what will happen, but surely if your mother wants our relationship to develop, that is her decision. Maybe you should feel happy that we have found each other?” Julia hadn’t replied as Allison had returned with the coffee, the tension between Julia and me was like the static in the air before a thunderstorm. Allison had poured the coffee and had sensed that something was wrong. Since that night our relationship had been more reserved than previously and was due to Julia’s influence. I knew that we had to break this chill if we were to dance a Tango in front of an audience. I strolled along enjoying the sunshine and in deep contemplation of this matter. As I passed the cricket
green my thoughts were interrupted by the ‘ phut, phut - bang!’ of the old ride-on lawn mower that was being used to cut the grass. The thing was ancient and a bit of a village icon. Its twin cylinders whirred and the grass flew in a green cascade into the rear collector. The smell of new mown grass made the scene idyllic but I wondered what things would be like in another week at this Summer Fete venue. A helmeted figure appeared at my side as I waved to Samantha Cartwright who was chugging up and down on the mower. It was John Cartwright, her husband, and the local village Bobby. He was different from the body-armoured, equipment belt festooned police constable that you usually saw - or should I say if you saw. He’d decided to return to a more public-friendly dress
that consisted of; black trousers and white shirt both neatly pressed, Doc Martin shoes - shined, and a proper helmet not a flat cap or bare headed. His belt carried a solitary clipdown handcuff pouch. Though I mentioned he was the village Bobby, his beat also covered another smaller village about a half mile away. He patrolled this beat by bicycle and knew many of the residents by their first names. We all wondered how he would be replaced when he retired in a few years. “Sam loves puttering around on that thing …” he began as he waved to his wife, “… saw that Nadia finally got you, Tom.” “Hah! …she did, nobody gets away from Nadia for long,” I replied. “That’s true, she got me
last week …she’s arranged some sort of dunking machine …Drop the Cop I think she’s calling it, that’s me - full uniform - hit the target and splash, into the water I go.” “I m dancing a Tango, with Allison.” “Hmm …that should be interesting, but if you don’t mind me saying so Tom you don’t look very Latin to me.”

our strained relationship. Nadia performed miracles; she obtained outdoor staging and lighting from the BBC, coerced a local band that had made it big to play for free - on two days, and also obtained some costumes for Allison and me.
“Well …I guess I could always use spray-on tan, dye my hair, slick it back and change my name to Hernando.” We shared a laugh at our mutual predicament before continuing our separate ways.
I’d not seen Allison’s dress because she said it needed some alteration and when I complained to Nadia about the tightness of my trousers revealing my fear that they’d split at a crucial moment, she laughed it off saying, “Don’t worry Tom, they’re elasticised!” I must admit my confidence was dropping like a lead fishing weight as the day drew closer.
The next couple of weeks passed quickly, Allison and I practised the Tango but our dancing was still a bit lifeless, without zest because of

hiking Boots & Bikinis……with outdoor air-conditioning! Walking in Spain in the summer – unthinkable! Keen as I am, I would have wholeheartedly agreed with that sentiment until our recent introduction to this delightful river walk near Nerja. Written by Gary dearden
T
he route is great fun and surprisingly comfortable to negotiate because, even on the hottest of days, it enjoys the ‘twin-cooler’ effect of fresh mountain breezes and knee-deep running water along the way.
M
ost rivers in our region dry up long before the summer, but the Rio Chíllar flows all year round, so head out prepared to get more than just your feet wet. The ‘boots and bikinis’ of the title were very prevalent when we did the walk in mid-July and early August, and while a pair of old trainers or even the plastic ‘croc’ style shoes would be OK, this is definitely no place for flip-flops or sandals.
T
he river bed is stony but not really slippery, so you can be fairly confident when placing your feet, although some of our group felt a little better
using their hiking poles.
W
ith no gradient to speak of, the going is easy enough, but the stones make for rather tricky progress in places and the strong current could make it uncomfortable for really young children or small dogs. However, cooling off in one of the many shallow plunge pools is the real pleasure on this walk, so take a towel or just ‘dripdry’ as you go.
Getting to the start
F
inding the start of this lovely walk is probably going to cause the most difficulty. From km292 on the A7 motorway, go down towards Nerja on the MA5105 and at the third roundabout, turn left heading east on the old N340 (Calle de Pescia).
Turn left at the third roundabout and follow Calle de Julio Romero uphill to a sharp left turn at the top. The narrow road soon becomes a rough concrete track that descends to the river bed, which you should keep on your left. Go past the concrete works and, with care, you can follow the river bed for a few hundred metres more. Parked cars are the clue as to where to stop but - even if you do happen to own a 4x4 some large rocks will eventually block any further progress. On weekends and holidays, the place will be mobbed with families avoiding the beach, so it’s advisable to go midweek, if at all possible.
The walk
F
rom your car parking spot, all you need to do is simply pick up and
A
follow the river as it winds gently uphill. Even if this lower part of the riverbed appears to have dried up – which it certainly had not when we went – you’ll be sure to find running water as you approach the small hydroelectric power station (1.5km). Once your feet are wet, you only have to take care when climbing the 50m concrete ramp just before the hydro-station, which even in August was slick with the overspill from the water channel feeding the station.
s the valley narrows, the river current gets stronger and the walk changes – for the better! In places where the gorge is narrow enough to touch both sides at once, the river echoes noisily and bright pink oleander and orange lantana cling to the steep slopes overhead. Numerous species of birds, butterflies and brightly coloured dragonflies forage above and around the river – though, strangely, not a single fish was spotted in the crystal clear water.
T
H
all eucalyptus trees on both riverbanks provide ample shade as the path criss-crosses the river for a while, or you can just stay in the water and enjoy splashing your companions! Keep going upstream for as long as you want – there are no signposts or junctions to worry about – and watch out for a partly hidden waterfall on the right hand side.
ow far you go upstream will be determined by your enthusiasm for the increasingly forceful current, which makes for slow going at times, although the more adventurous will be rewarded with bigger rocks to scramble around and ever deepening plunge pools and refreshing cascades to enjoy.
W
herever you choose to turn around, be sure to pick a pleasant spot for a picnic and maybe even have another cooling dip before setting off back downstream to return to your car – it will be much easier on the legs, but slightly more difficult to stay upright!
B
e careful: this is not a particularly tough walk, so it’s ideal for a family day out, but remember that water and excited children do not always mix. Take it easy, as even experienced walkers could suffer a wobble in the strong current and a sprained ankle here would make for a very difficult and watery extrication. For obvious reasons, this is not one to try just after – or just before – heavy rain. In the winter, the river is likely to be too strong and too cold to even attempt the walk – so if you can’t make it before September is out, keep it for next summer.

The first ever Mojo Pin gig, hosted by Pógs in Fuengirola, went down well last Thursday. Despite being a “school night”, attendance was good and enthusiastic with the Mojo Pin fans putting down their roots for the first time. The youth and enthusiasm of this new Anglo-Spanish band came over well, a sure sign of more good things to come. As the band develops their style aficionados of quality live music can expect to hear more from Mojo Pin
especially at Pógs. Hot band for this week at Pógs is Traffic Jam; live loud and rocking this Saturday 4th September. A great Málaga band, with a fine following, a little bit of charm and always good musical covers from U2, Pink Floyd and many more iconic artists and if your lucky, some of their own music. For more (downloadable) photos of both Mojo Pin and Traffic Jam go to the web and type in www.picasaweb.google.co m/woodysfotos.

Avatar re-release
Last chance for a quick buck
Even though it only seems like 5 minutes since James Cameron´s Avatar was showing in a cinema near you the blockbuster is about to be re-released.
e Expendables BY SYLVESTER STALLONE Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham A group of mercenaries are hired to infiltrate a South American country to overthrow its ruthless dictator - er, not a startlingly original storyline then. But of course, what makes all this a bit different - and something of a guilty pleasure for action movie fans - is that it brings together just about every movie action hero since the 80s. That means cameo roles for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzeneggar, starring
roles for Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke et al... but no Jean Claude Van Damme or Steven Segal, who turned down the chance to jump aboard this back-to-basics romp, full of guys with muscles, guns and explosions. With an A to Z cast of tough guy action heroes, and no fancy-dan direction, Stallone has managed to produce a film that has hit the No 1 box-
office slot in America. It's a simple tale - Sly plays Barney Ross, the guy who takes his trusted team of hired help into the heart of danger and you can expect a blockbuster of an action ending. So, get the popcorn and settle down for a testosterone-fuelled ride. Stallone is already talking about The Expendables 2 and has tweeted that he wants to ask Bruce Willis to play the baddie.
The "special edition" has an extra eight minutes of footage showing new beasts and action scenes on Pandora. Cameron said that fans wanted to "stay longer" in the alien world and this edition gives them the chance to do just that. It will only be released in 3D - so the eight minutes is going to cost fans a few more bob to go see. The movie has already set a new world wide box office record and made trillions.

Jennifer Aniston is apparently going to appear topless in her next movie. Shooting for Wanderlust will begin at the end of the year and Jen will play a married woman who decides to embrace a hippy lifestyle with her husband, to be played by Paul Rudd. ere on the costa, there can’t be many people haven’t been subjected to the pressures of hard selling in one form or another. With thousands of properties for sale as potentially profitable investments or holiday homes sure to make their owners lots of cash, there have been plenty of opportunities for sharp talking sales people to sell a slice of Spanish bricks and mortar. That’s without even talking about timeshare, an industry that has had a history of hard selling. It can be a cruel, hard world with salesmen under pressure to perform - perfect for a tense movie storyline but rooted in reality.
I

t is the selling of property investments that forms the basis of the plot for the acclaimed 1992 film Glengarry Glen Ross. With a cast list that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood’s finest, it follows the tactics and traumas of a company of estate agents, each locked into a cycle of bad leads, slow sales and poor performance. Alec Baldwin plays Blake, the hard hitting motivator sent by the company’s owners to shake up the old fashioned sales office. Brash, ruthless and successful, he sets the four salesmen in the office against each other, telling them that they have technically been fired but that there are two positions available for the best performers. If they can make something overnight out of the leads they already have, they can be re-employed and take advantage of the new leads for the lucrative Glengarry Highlands development.
A
n office burglary reveals that the new leads have been stolen, and while detectives question the staff about the theft, the heat is turned up as a client arrives to pull out of a deal made by top salesman Ricky Roma,
played by Al Pacino. In a series of contradicting stories and lies, the client’s deal is lost and a slip of the tongue reveals the perpetrator of the theft to be Jack Lemmon’s character, Levene. Kevin Spacey plays the mean office manager and Ed Harris is smooth as Dave Moss, the original mastermind behind the leads theft. The film ends as Levene heads into the office to face the detectives and his inevitable downfall.
A
very different group of salesmen feature in The Boiler Room, released in 2000, starring Ben Affleck and Vin Diesel. Selling over the telephone from a nondescript office, the young and enthusiastic sales team have to shift stocks and shares at hugely inflated prices, creating artificial demand in the market. Expert deal closer Chris Varick ( Diesel), is given the job of training 19- yearold recruit Seth Davis, (Giovanni Ribisi). But Davis is picked up by the FBI, who have been monitoring the unethical practices, and he is persuaded to help bring the firm down.
K
nowing the FBI are planning a midday raid Davis copies incriminating documents onto a floppy disk and tips off Varick about FBI raid. The end of the film sees Seth Davis walk away from the office as FBI agents arrive to storm the building.
T
he irony is that the films show the downfall of lying and dodgy salesmen and yet from personal experience, I know that scenes from both movies have been used in motivational exercises in sales rooms along the coast. Life imitating art imitating life. Anyone wanna buy a sure-thing investment holiday-home cum rental property in Coín?

This is the time when working extremely hard to get things done will move mountains, actions make more of an impact and are far stronger than any words. So let your deeds speak for themselves. If something is unfinished from the past then this is the time to forge on ahead to get it sorted out. Clearing up old business that has stood in the way of your moving on is the focus and recent events have made it abundantly clear what still needs attending to. You have all the tools you need to clear up the past. Rising above obstacles and learning from past mistakes will enable you to battle through with a game plan and not lose faith. Always bear in mind that the easy way out may not always prove to be the best way - certainly when it comes to a long term prosperity. Do not be tempted to cut corners but apply your creative and imaginative genius to a problem and watch it all click into place. Your imagination is at its height right now and you will want to create beauty all around you. What works for you, may not always work for others, so even though others are asking for your counsel they may not be able to pull something off quite like you. It is basically the fact that you think much faster than the other signs and are certainly always one step ahead. You may feel that another is draining you of energy or dragging you down this week. Keep your feet on the ground and make sure you do not give too much too quickly. Eliminating those dead end paths and putting your energy into that which has the potential to thrive and grow will lead you to prosperity – it is sitting there waiting in the wings for you to make your claim. There is only so much that you can do on your own so it is up to you to make sure that others hold up their end of the deal. Work with those that want to help you move forward, not those that want to secretly hold you back. Could those that you have believed and trusted actually be wrong? Perhaps you are now seeing that good intentions on their own without applying wisdom can lead you down a path that steers you further away from the ‘truth’. The focus is primarily upon finances and these need careful consideration and sorting out - what will work in the future and what won’t. Getting these things in order and facing reality will enable you to put the spark back into your life and really start planning. This is a deeply sensual and emotional time for you when you are feeling totally ‘alive’ on the inside. Give your worries some time off and kick back and have some fun and frolics, there will be plenty of time to get serious and knuckle down shortly. You may find yourself reflecting on the past in some way but it is important not to dwell too much – what is done is done and negative thoughts could bring you down. Just relax Virgo – you deserve to.

When the light is dim – all is not lost. Even when things seem gloomy and stagnant nothing stays the same forever. You may be undertaking a lot of reflection, going back over events in your mind as to how you could have done things differently, do not spend too long in this space but use this time to understand why things happened and how it has got you to where you are now. You are on the brink of liberating change and there is a whole world out there waiting to embrace you. How comforting life is right now, you instinctively feel that you are on track and you know that no matter how hard things seem it is absolutely imperative that you stay on course and hold your own. This is a great time to plan for your financial future and to make a major purchase that will benefit you in the long term. Someone is trying to tell you something important, so take the time out to spend ‘listening’, to your inner voice and the voice of a loved one.

As it’s high summer now, I thought that a few dips that can be eaten with last week’s falafel recipe, carrot and cucumber batons etc out on the patio would be pleasant. So, part one this week. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will appreciate this richly flavoured healthy Greek speciality and children will love dipping the vegetable batons.
Tahini Ingredients:
(serves 4-6)
It is worth making tahini in bulk to reduce waste as the sticky paste is difficult to empty cleanly from your food processor. This is the proportion of oil to sesame seeds to use, increase the quantities to suit your needs ● ¼ cup vegetable oil
● 1 cup sesame seeds
Method ● Preheat your oven to 340°F (170° C). ● Spread the sesame seeds on a roasting tray, and toast in the oven for 15 minutes, stirring regularly to toast evenly. Do not allow to brown as this impairs the flavour. Remove the sesame seeds and allow to cool briefly. ● Put the toasted sesame seeds in your food processor, with metal blades fitted, and add half the oil.
● Process on a high setting for a minute, stopping to clean the sides of the food processor with a spatula from time to time. ● Add the rest of the oil, and continue to process the seeds to a paste. Ensure that all the mix is blended to a paste. ● When the mixture is evenly smooth, transfer your tahini to a tight fitting glass jar using a flexible spatula, to reduce waste.

Those of you who live in Spain and have a car more than a few years old, will know that the car has to have its ITV, the equivalent of the MOT. This happens once every two years for newer cars and every year for older cars. Of course, you can pay a mechanic or a garage to take your car for you but why not be brave and do it yourself. It'll be good practise for your alphabet, days and numbers just making the appointment. You can make the appointment either on-line or by phone. Personally, I think the easiest is by phone. You ring 902 57 57 57 and ask for an appointment - Una cita. Me hace falta una cita para la ITV - I need an appoinment for the MOT (ITV is pronounced EE TEY OOVEY) You will be asked for your car's registration number so have this ready and rehearsed. Frog skin may beat antibiotic resistance
Beauty Tip
Pamper yourself in the shower
The foothill yellow-legged frog offers hope for a cure to MRSA
More than 100 potential bacteria-killing substances have been identified from more than 6,000 species of frog, which means frog skins could become an important source of new antibiotics to treat superbugs. Researchers at the United Arab Emirates University are now trying to tweak the substances to make them less toxic and suitable for use as human medicines. They hope their work means some of the substances could be in clinical trials within five years. Drug resistant bacteria, such as MRSA, are becoming an increasing problem worldwide, yet
there is a lack of new treatments in the pipeline. Among the substances found by the researchers are a compound from a rare American species that shows promise for killing MRSA. Another fights a drugresistant infection seen in soldiers returning from Iraq. They said their work underscored the importance of preserving frog diversity.
Research leader Michael Conlon said frog skin is an excellent potential source of such antibiotic agents:
“
They've been around 300 million years, so they've had plenty of time to learn how to defend themselves against disease-causing microbes in the environment. Their own environment includes polluted waterways where strong defences against pathogens are a must."

Top eight cancer signs pinpointed
Don’t have time to go to your nearest salon? Too hot to travel in the heat? No problem! Sarah will come to you at very affordable prices!
The eight unexplained symptoms most closely linked to cancer have been pinpointed by researchers.
Is your skin in need of care? Why not try the NEW 4 in 1 facial machine? Visible results after one treatment! Facial electrical therapy is becoming increasingly more popular and is designed to improve skin conditions and problems. This machine is used to achieve effects that are not possible with a “hands on” facial.
There are 4 facials to choose from: Deep Cleansing Facial 1 hr 20mins 45€ Electrically charged cosmetics are introduced in to the skin to deep cleanse, refine large pores and soften
the skin. Skin texture will be improved leaving the skin fresher, cleaner and blemish free! Oxygen Facial 1 hr 10mins 40€ Oxygenating cream and collagen gels bring fresh nutrients to the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and rehydrate the skin. This facial is beneficial for dry, sensitive and mature skins. Lymphatic Facial 1 hr 35€ Vaccum suction cleanses the skin, improves the appearance of the skin and reduces fine lines. This facial stimulates a sluggish circulation, leaving the skin fresher, firmer and hydrated. The facial is beneficial for all skin types. Revitalising Facial 1 hr 10 mins 40€ This facial is customized to meet your skin's individual needs. Skin will be left fresher with an improved skin colour and texture. Fine lines and wrinkles will be less noticeable, and oil and blemishes will be reduced (See front page ad, or call 693 109 293 for information on a wide range of treatments.)
Researchers at Keele University also gave the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which are blood in urine and anaemia, rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, postmenopause bleeding and abnormal prostate tests. The researchers were looking for symptoms which gave a one in 20 or higher chance of turning out to be cancer. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said that these were by no means the only potential warning signs. He said the particular symptoms mentioned in the study are already thought of as important potential signs of cancer, but there are more than 200 different types of cancer, which cause many different symptoms. He advised
people who notice an unusual or persistent change in their body to get it checked out immediately because when cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is often more likely to be successful.

Here are some tips that will help start your day more decadently than you ever thought possible. All are fast-acting, and work in any combination that suits you. So don't save the big-time beautification for a special occasion - hit the shower instead, and let the express pampering begin. Brush up Body brushing is easy, fast, and delicious, and a oneminute session is the perfect prelude to a shower. Using one or two brushes and large, gentle, circular strokes, start at your feet and work your way up toward your heart. Then repeat from hands to heart, using only one brush at a time for this part. You'll not only stimulate your nerve endings and circulation, but slough your skin lightly, too, so that whether you use soap or gel, it will be absorbed more easily. Give masks more face time Whether you'd like to moisturise, deep-clean, or simply get glowing, apply your mask before (rather than during) your shower. You'll get more treatment time, and less dilution from the nozzle's spray. Once you step into the shower, you can rinse right away or let the mask steam into your skin for a few minutes. Get the vapours For a quick hit of happiness in the morning, spike your shower's steam with an aromatherapy tablet. Meet your kneads The easy way to turn basic sudsing into a stimulating scalp massage: Start by squeezing your shampoo's prescribed dose directly onto your wet hair. Then, opening your hands wide into "spider-fingers position," vigorously rub your scalp. Within one minute, you'll release tension, boost blood flow, and clean well to boot. Cleanse with benefits The latest body washes pack major beauty bonuses. Some shower gels and creams hydrate so thoroughly that you can skip the post-shower lotion. In the summer, when your skin is typically moistest, you shouldn't need additional hydration.

SOCIAL NETWORKS
Facebook alternative Diaspora eyes launch date An open alternative to Facebook will be launched on September 15th, the developers of the project have said. Diaspora describes itself as a "privacy-aware, personallycontrolled" social network. The open-source project made headlines earlier this year when Facebook was forced to simplify its privacy settings, after they were criticised for being overly complex and confusing. The project, developed by four US students, raised $200,000 (£140,000). "We have Diaspora
working, we like it, and it will be open-sourced on September 15th," the team wrote on their blog. The team said they had spent the summer "building clear, contextual sharing"."That means an intuitive way for users to decide, and not notice deciding, what content goes to their co-workers and what goes to their drinking buddies. We know that's a
hard [user interface] problem and we take it seriously." The project was started by three computer scientists and one mathematician from New York.
GOOGLE TIPS
Eight clever Google tricks worth knowing Below is a list of the top Google tricks many users don't know about. Definitions - Pull up the definition of the word by typing define followed by the word you want the definition for. For example, typing: define bravura would display the definition of that word. Local search - Visit Google Local enter the area you want to search and the keyword of the place you want to find. For example, typing: restaurant at the above link would display local restaurants. Find weather - Type weather followed by a postal code or city to display current weather conditions and forecasts for upcoming days. Track airline flight - Enter the airline and flight number to display the status of an airline flight and it's arrival time. For example, type: BA 123 to display this flight information if available. Convert currency, metrics, bytes, and more - Google's powerful built-in converter calculator can help you out whether you're cooking dinner, travelling abroad, or building a PC. Find out how many teaspoons are in a quarter cup (or quarter cup in teaspoons), how many seconds there are in a year, or how many euros there are to the pound (or pounds to
the euro). Use the Google Search engine as a calculator by typing a math problem in the search. For example, typing: 100 + 200 would display results as 300. Find PDF results only - Add filetype: to your search to display results that only match a certain file type. For example, if you wanted to display PDF results only type: "dell xps" filetype:pdf -- this is a great way to find online manuals. Stocks - Quickly get to a stock quote price, chart, and related links by typing the stock symbol in Google. For example, typing: msft will display the stock information for Microsoft. Find out what time it is anywhere in the world - This one’s really handy if you want to make sure that you’re not phoning someone in the middle of the night. Just search for “time” and then the name of the city. For example, try: time San Francisco.

Crash test dummy Vettel “Sebastian is getting into a bad habit,'”said Button's team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, thinking back to Vettel's prang with Webber in Turkey amid a mistake-prone season. “He's quite a crash kid. It is not what you would expect to see in F1. It was more reminiscent of junior formulae. He got a drive-through penalty but that's a light punishment to me.” ( Button after the impact pictured right ).
Hamilton survives a late scare at a wet and cold Spa to seal the win Lewis Hamilton led an action packed Belgian Grand Prix from start to finish, posting a momentous victory in a drama packed afternoon at SpaFrancorchamps while his championship rivals faltered.
Hamilton’s victory came after some heart stopping moments, where he had a major moment through Turn 8 when rain came down for a final time. He went through the gravel and looked as if he was heading for a collision with the wall, luckily for him
Pedrosa powers to win at Indianapolis For the first time since joining MotoGP in 2006, Dani Pedrosa has won three races in a single season after his win at Indianapolis on Sunday. Hamilton splashes through the rain to seal his win
A delighted Hamilton
he just brushed it and from then on he stayed error free until he crossed the line to take the chequered flag. Hamilton then sported the biggest grin in the paddock, this was one race he really wanted and a major result in this championship. Jenson
Button failed to finish as he fell victim of a bizarre move by Sebastian Vettel which saw the out of control Red Bull plunge into the side of the McLaren Mercedes while the pair were battling for second and third. Commenting on Vettel’s drive-through penalty
the reigning champion said: “What else can you give him? It was a racing incident, he didn’t do it on purpose but what else can you do?” Alonso was another nonfinisher, crashing out at Les Combs in the wet conditions.
John Hill Memorial £170,000 Ferrari Classic Car Run in 458 - jinxed, cursed aid of Cudeca or just bad luck The latest Ferrari supercar is being plagued by a mysterious jinx - after ten of them crashed or were gutted by fire. In the past three months, six 200mph Ferrari 458 Italias have been involved in accidents, The event, in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice, will take place on Saturday September 11th and is open to the public, especially to those who own a classic car. All participants are asked to pay a 10€ entrance fee and the start venue is to be confirmed. The idea is to get some of your friends or associates to sponsor your car to take part, to increase funds raised for Cudeca just like sponsoring a conventional run or walk, or a swim.Car owners are likely to find people willing to give 10€ in support considering that most people have either known someone or been associated with someone lost to cancer. If each car could find 10 sponsors then the club will be really
making a great contribution to such an important cause. The run will finish at the restaurant El Campanario Golf and Country Club in Benamara, just past San Pedro, who will provide a parking and display area just for the cars. Banners and decorations will be in evidence at the hotel in support of Cudeca. There will also be collecting tins nearby to collect funds from the general public, and a raffle on the day with numerous prizes kindly donated by local friends and businesses. An excellent lunch is available for 30€ inclusive of wines etc. For more information or if you would like to donate or collect some prizes for the raffle, please contact Ian Giles on 620 180 682.

The Repsol Honda rider worked his way up from fourth on lap one and took the lead by accelerating past home hero - and pole sitter - Ben Spies on the main straight on lap 7 of 28, then rode to a comfortable 3.575sec victory. Star rookie Spies held his own in second place for the rest of the race, marking his best ever grand prix finish and second podium of the year, after a third at Silverstone. The final podium position went to MotoGP title leader Jorge Lorenzo, who suffered his worst finish of the season, but at least kept his perfect 2010 podium record intact. Former world champion Nicky Hayden
has signed a two-year deal to stay with Ducati and partner Valentino Rossi. He has raced for Ducati for two years and is sixth in the 2010 season's standings. The 29-year-old said: "Next year I'll be teamed with some guy named Rossi who knows a little something about bikes."

Pakistan face calls for life bans A Classic evening on the Costa over the spot-fixing claims
Former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan says swift action must be taken against In an attempt to escape the heat of the midday sun at this time of the year, anyone found to have been part of the alleged no-ball conspiracy at Lord's. SOL Classic Car Club decided to hold "If these allegations are true claims Amir and Asif bowled then there should be no-balls against England in their first ever evening run in August. exemplary punishment," the final Test at preKhan told the BBC World Service. Past captains from both England and Pakistan have called for life bans if the allegations are proved. And former International Cricket Council chief Malcolm Speed believes the ICC may ban Pakistan from cricket. determined times as part of a betting conspiracy. Pakistan are due to play Somerset on Thursday, but the two Twenty20 matches against England which follow and a five-match oneday series that is scheduled to begin on September 10th have been thrown into doubt. Imran Khan believes the tour must continue even if some of the Pakistan team are guilty. "Why should the fans suffer? If the players are found guilty they should be

shunted out of the team [and] replaced by others," he said. But Speed, who served as ICC chief between 2001 and 2008, disagrees. "I think that suspension is an option. It is serious,"said Speed. "It looks as though it is endemic; that several of the team members are involved and have been for some time. So perhaps they need a rest," he said. The ICC's anti-corruption unit is already investigating Pakistan's tour to Australia in December and January, which included a suspicious result in the final Test in Sydney when Pakistan contrived to lose in a dominant position amid a
flurry of dropped catches. The tourists were whitewashed in both Test and one-day series down under and several players were banned for misconduct following an investigation by the PCB. "The game has to be cleaned up. This is the chance to change the game forever and stamp this kind of thing out," said former England captain Michael Vaughan. He added:"The only way the game will move forward is by hitting those involved with life bans if they are found guilty.”
England Women beat USA to reach World Cup semi-finals England’s Women have made it through to a World Cup semi-final against Australia with a six-try, 3710 win over the United States. Full-back Danielle Waterman grabbed the first of her two tries and Katy McLean landed a penalty before the US hit back with a Natalie Machino try. But Kat Merchant collected McLean's neat chip and Waterman sliced through again to help England into a first half 20-5 lead. Emily Scarratt grabbed the fourth on the resumption before further scores from Amber Penrith and Maggie Alphonsi. England head coach Gary Street said: "I'm pleased with that performance, we certainly would have taken

We have never played them before so there is a sense of the unknown here. They won the Rugby World Cup Sevens last year so we know they are used to the big stage, and I think it is going to make for a really thrilling semi-final,"Street added.

Australia, who secured the best runner-up spot, the match takes place at the Twickenham Stoop tonight
The other semi-final will feature defending champions and favourites New Zealand, who beat Wales 41-8 on Saturday, against France, who overcame Canada 23-8 in their pool decider. That game, also tonight at The Stoop, kicks off at 1800, with the same venue hosting next Sunday's final.
The run started at 5.30 pm at the Marbella Golf and Country Club from where the cars drove through Marbella High Street, along the Golden Mile and on to Puerto Banus. There was a great deal of head-turning among the shoppers and sightseers who obviously enjoyed seeing the cavalcade. After stopping for a cooling drink at Bar Granada in San Pedro the group returned along the N340 to Elviria where they turned into the hills, climbing through some unexpectedly rural scenery up to the heights of La Mairena. The views of the coast from this elevated location are magnificent and it 's sad to think that so few of the millions of tourists who flock to the Costa in the summer months are aware of the unspoilt nature of the countryside little more than a stone’s throw from the concrete
and traffic jams along the coast. The cars then descended via La Cala to their dinner venue for the evening, at Miraflores, where members were treated to a first-class meal in beautiful surroundings overlooking the sea. There was entertainment provided by Johnny Baker with his mixture of Jazz Blues and rock music, and a table magician, Magic Al, who delighted both adults and children with his amazing sleight of hand – or was it really magic? The prize draw for a night for two at a local hotel was won by Denise Ballard. SOL Classic Car Club are planning a wide range of activities when the weather starts to get cooler. DAVE’S DRIVES Hello again Over the last couple of years some friends from our urbanisation and the one next to us have arranged a game once a month at various courses in the area. This last week was just such an occasion and we chose Lauro G.C.for our outing which was a little different from normal as it was the last day out for one of our number, Pete Coles, who is moving back to the U.K. To make the day hopefully memorable for Pete we invited a few of the lads from C.O.G.S. to come along and eighteen of us made the day out. Luckily we had an early start as it turned out to be just about the hottest day of the year so far. The heat made scoring quite difficult so a winning score of 34 points by Joe King was very commendable. Sadly I managed to win the dreaded ‘Pink Plunger’ (lowest score)
prize with a score of 20 points but it didn’t spoil what was a really good morning out. The day was finished off in La Risa bar at the course with a very nice buffet lunch and some liquid refreshment and Pete will, I’m sure, take fond memories back to England of his last day out with us for a while (he did say he would tear himself away from Villa Park at some point to come back and play a game). The best of luck then to Pete and his wife Christine back home and we’ll know you are back when we hear the call “ Where’s me putter ? ” Till the next time Keep your head down Dave.

Top cyclists hit Coin Team Sky is wracked by a mysterious illness that’s sweeping through the British team early in the 2010 Vuelta a España. As another Britain finds the going tough
Malaga 1 - Valencia 3
Two Team Sky riders have quit the Tour of Spain during the third stage having been left sick by a mystery illness that has swept through the team.
26,000 expectant fans turned up at La Rosaleda hoping to see the new look Malaga take on Valencia and for the first 10 minutes they really did look like a new side. It was, however no surprise that Valencia broke the deadlock and went 1 nil up with Aduriz heading home from a corner.
"John Lee Augustyn and Ben Swift both pulled out because they could not continue as they were so sick," said team principal Dave Brailsford. "Another three, Simon Gerrans, Ian Stannard and Pete Kennaugh are all really bad." Brailsford added: "It's basically they can't stop vomiting but we don't think it's food poisoning. "We've got our own chef and the riders and staff eat separately and we're always very vigilant about hygiene" The third stage from Marbella to Malaga was ridden in 44 deg heat, and leader Mark Cavendish was dropped and left trailing by the peloton early on (3rd from the right in the picture wearing the leader s red jersey) on the long climb upfrom Marbella to Coin.
New look Malaga beaten by classy Valencia
Britains Mark Cavendish is shepherded by his team mates as he struggles through Coin
The crowds were out in large numbers as the race passed through Coin on their way up to Alozaina and then to Malaga via Cartama, as the large colourful convoy of bikes, cars, Guardia Civil in their jeeps and on their motorbikes, team cars loaded with spare bikes and the ever-present helicopters overhead, all
swept through Coin and in 10 minutes it was back to normal siesta time. Britain's Mark Cavendish lost his Tour lead to Philippe Gilbert who broke clear in the final stages to capture the stage and claim a 14-second overall advantage over Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez. Spaniard
Serafin Martinez made a burst for the line in Malaga but was overtaken by Gilbert, who then withstood the challenge of Rodriguez over the final kilometre to win by three seconds. Cavendish dropped to 138th in the 21- stage race, which ends on 19th September.
Malaga then came into the game and had various half chances. Valencia had a great chance to double their lead in the 35th minute but Juan Manuel Mata was denied when one-on-one with Arnau. Just before half time Malaga equalised, Eliseu's low free kick being touched in by Fernandez at the
nearpost. The second half started brightly for Malaga, a brilliant move was met by Malaga's new €3 million signing Rondon, his header being tipped over by Valencia's keeper Cesar. The game was there for Malaga to win but up stepped Valencia's Spanish international Joaquin who drove at the Malaga defence, stepping past two and firing low into the net on the 70th minute. Four minutes later, he finished a great Valencia move, smashing home after being set up by Navarro and Aduriz. Disappointing but some positives, it s early days... Report by: Scott Forbes

Last surviving player from first World Cup final dies Francisco Varallo has died in Argentina at the age of 100 . Monty names his three wild cards European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has selected Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari as his wildcard picks. Italian Molinari, 29, won the Johnnie Walker Championship on Sunday to impress Montgomerie and earn his spot ahead of Paul Casey and Justin Rose. Molinari joins brother Francesco, who was an automatic qualifier, for the team. Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez sealed the last two qualifying places after finishing well at Gleneagles. Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher and Francesco Molinari occupied the top seven places in the Ryder Cup rankings to also qualify automatically. Montgomerie’s biggest headache was choosing between Casey and Harrington, and it was a brave call to favour the Irishman who has been out of sorts recently but has a wealth of experience to bring to the team. Six of the team - McIlroy, Kaymer, Fisher, Hanson and both Molinaris - will all be making their Ryder Cup debuts at Celtic Manor from October 1st-3rd. Montgomerie claimed Molinari "probably didn't need to win" in Perthshire to earn a pick, however, he heaped lavish praise on the 2009 World Cup winner after he birdied his last three holes to snatch a oneshot victory from Australian Brett Rumford. "In my time as a player on the European Tour, and
I've been a member for 24 years, I don't think I've seen a finish of that quality under pressure by anyone anywhere," said Montgomerie. "I think what he did today was, literally, incredible and he is the type of player we need to regain the Cup from America." The Molinaris, who won the World Cup together in China last year, will become the first siblings to play in the Ryder Cup since Bernard and Geoff Hunt played for Britain in their 1963 defeat against the USA. Montgomerie admitted he felt sorry for world number nine Casey and Rose, a two-time winner in the US this year, but said Europe "had an embarrassment of riches

on this occasion". "Padraig has won three majors in the past two years, he has great stature in the game and when his back is up against the wall he comes out and gives it his all, tremendous," said
Montgomerie. "He is someone we felt that nobody in matchplay golf wants to play. He's a great competitor. In Luke Donald we have someone who can compete in foursomes and fourball golf, and has played seven
"He said 'let me have a role', which shows what the Ryder Cup means to him and he is going to be a great asset to us," Montgomerie said. Malaga man Jimenez, 46, missed his nephew's wedding to defend his position in the last automatic qualifying spot at Gleneagles.

McEnroe backs Murray's chances John McEnroe believes Andy Murray is among three players who can win this year's US Open. The four-times US Open champion is a fan of Murray's game and has backed the British number one to break his major duck within the next 12 months.

Warrington pull off cup double It seems trophies are like London buses for Warrington after waiting so long for one (34 years to be precise) they've now won two in as many years. The Wolves retained the Carnegie Challenge Cup trophy on Saturday with a comprehensive 30-6 victory over Leeds at Wembley.

Has Monty lost his bottle Leaving out Paul Casey in favour of Padraig Harrington may come back to haunt Montgomerie. The Irishman has had a lean 2 years dropping to 19th in the World rankings, while Casey has risen to no 8 and is having a great season.
