ICKHAM’S

WORLD What a whopper...!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I expect you noticed that there were another 8 pages in your copy of The news last week. That means more news, more information and lots more interesting things to read and find out about. We have been able to do this is because The news is so popular that advertisers - and, let's face it, they pay our wages at the end of the day - know that our paper is the place to be seen. We had got to the stage that advertising was so prolific we felt we needed more space for news, views and features. now you will find more world news, more news from the uK to keep you in touch what's happening that friends and relatives back in the uK are talking about, more community news for what's going on where we all live and more sports news. Plus we are running stories written by local and new upcoming authors for you to enjoy. The team here at your favourite paper is very proud of the fact that, since starting from scratch under two years ago, we have grown by nearly 70%! That's quite an achievment and the feedback we get from both advertisers and readers is fantastic. Without you we wouldn't be here so we'd all like to say a very big “Thank You” for all your support. If there's anything you feel is missing or we're not doing right, let us know and we'll be happy to see if we can improve. At last it seems to be getting cooler in the evenings and early mornings. Hooray!

He said forecasts that tourism would have fully recovered by the end of next year were incorrect. He predicted it would be another three or four years before tourism figures got back to their pre-crisis level.

The statement adds that ETA "took the decision several months ago not to carry out armed actions", and ends saying: "We call on all Basque citizens to continue in the struggle, each in their own field, with whatever degree of commitment they have, so that we can all cast down the wall of denial and make irreversible moves forward on the road to freedom."

premier Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said the only statement the government wanted to hear was that the group had laid down its arms and abandoned violence forever. This latest announcement comes after the arrests of most of the group's leaders by the French and Spanish police and during an unprecedented period of debate within the Basque nationalist community, which has been calling on ETA to make peace and join the democratic process.

The group has called two ceasefires in the past, but abandoned them both and it is unclear whether the latest is meant as a permanent or temporary move. Basque interior minister Rodolfo Ares called the statement "insufficient", while deputy

another ploy to help its sympathisers to take part in next May's local elections. Both the Madrid and the Basque regional government are determined not to allow this without a firm commitment from ETA to disarm. Some observers say that ETA will return to its violent tactics as soon as it becomes obvious that the ploy has failed. But others hope that ETA really means it this time. Since ETA was founded in 1959 with the objective of obtaining independence for the seven regions in northern Spain and south-west France that Basque separatists claim as their own, it has been responsible for the deaths of more than 850 people.

Dissidents disillusioned Ten of the 28 Cuban political prisoners who were released from jail and allowed to travel to Spain a few weeks ago have said they are “victims”of the “sickly optimism” of Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the Socialist Party. In the so-called Móstoles Declaration, the former detainees said last week that only the Socialist Party and the Spanish government can see

changes for the better in Cuba. The statement coincided with a recent visit to Cuba by the

Socialist Party's organisation secretary Leire Pajin and Elena Valenciano, responsible for the party's international cooperation policies.

Although the two women met Cuban president Raul Castro, they refused to meet the dissidents still living in Cuba, saying it would be inappropriate.

Argentina’s appeals court has reopened an investigation into crimes against humanity in Spain during the rule of General Francisco Franco, overturning a previous ruling that blocked a suit brought by Argentine relatives of two Spaniards killed under Franco. The appeals court said a diplomatic request should be sent to Spain to ask what action it was taking to investigate crimes against humanity between 1936 and 1977 and if "a systematic and deliberate plan to terrorise Spaniards who supported the

representative government by their physical elimination" had existed during that time. Human rights groups have welcomed the decision. The lawsuit was opened in Argentina in April after Spain’s “super-

Aftershocks rock Christchurch Following last Saturday's powerful earthquake that caused widespread damage the New Zealand city has suffered a large number of violent aftershocks, more than a dozen overnight on Monday. More than 80 aftershocks have been recorded since Saturday's 7.0-magnitude tremor, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 5.1. Despite the damage caused by the strong earthquake, no-one was

killed and only two serious injuries were reported. Prime Minister, John Key said on Monday that almost two-thirds of the 160,000 homes in and around Christchurch were damaged by the quake, many beyond repair. Experts have warned a

major aftershock could hit the area in the near future. Christchurch mayor, Bob Parker extended a state of emergency for another two days while troops helped police secure streets and badly damaged businesses.

By Tuesday, power had been restored to 90% of the city. The water supplies had resumed for up to 80% although those who had running water have been warned not to drink it because of contamination from broken sewage pipes.

Mine vigil Obama unveils $50bn building plan marked by flag ceremony President Barack Obama has called for a new comprehensive infrastructure plan as part of efforts to jump-start the faltering US economy. On Friday, the US Labour Department announced that the US economy had lost a further 54,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate rose to 9.6%, from 9.5% in July. Under the plan, about $50 billion will be invested in roads, railways and airports as well as high-speed rail links and the creation of an infrastructure bank. Mr Obama told an event in Milwaukee which was

marking the Labour Day holiday in the US: "Over the next six years, we are going to rebuild 150,000 miles of our roads - enough to circle the world six times. "We're going to lay and maintain 4,000 miles of our railways - enough to stretch coast-to-coast. We're going to restore 150 miles of runways and advance a next generation air-traffic control system to reduce travel time and delays for American travellers -

something I think folks across the political spectrum could agree on." Mr Obama added: "All of this will not only create jobs now, but will make our economy run better over the long haul." The announcement marked the start of a week in which Mr Obama will focus on the economy, seen as the most important issue for voters in November’s congressional elections.

PM Gillard to form government Julia Gillard will stay on as Australia's prime minister after winning the backing of two key independent MPs, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, who held the balance of power in parliament after a fellow independent MP, Bob Katter, backed opposition leader Tony Abbott. The dramatic announcement

ended more than two weeks of political deadlock following indecisive elections. It gives Ms Gillard's Labour Party the backing of one more MP in the lower house than the Liberal-led coalition in the first minority government since World War II. Ms

Gillard told a news conference in Canberra that the events of the past fortnight showed unequivocally that Australia's democracy “is very, very strong indeed". She said the agreement would enable Labour to deliver stable, effective and secure government for the

next three years. It will also enable Ms Gillard to press ahead with her plans to introduce the broadband network, a 30% tax on iron ore and coal mining companies' profits, and a tax on major polluters to help cut carbon emissions by 5% by 2020.

Many had given them up for lost, but they had stayed alive underground by rationing the emergency food supplies.

French strike hits Spanish flights A 24-hour national strike to protest over plans to raise the minimum state retirement age from 60 to 62 caused major disruption to public transport, banks, air traffic and the postal service in France on Tuesday. And its consequences were felt in Spain where more than 100 flights were cancelled to France and other European countries. RyanAir was hard hit - it lost 71 of its planned schedule. Trains from France to Spain were also badly affected. Hundreds of thousands of French private and public sector workers took to the streets as the pension reform bill was presented to parliament. Even with the raise, the French retirement age is well below the European average. Under the proposed law, the age for full pension payments would be lifted from 65 to 67. The bill is one of the key reforms president Nicolas Sarkozy hopes to push through during the last two years of his mandate.

Rain halts search for mudslide victims Emergency teams in Guatemala halted eorts to find bodies at the site of the most serious in a series of mudslides, as new rains made it too dangerous to continue the search for at least 15 missing people. A massive mudslide engulfed scores of people on Sunday on a highway in Nahuala, north-west of Guatemala City, as they tried to dig out five vehicles and a bus. At least 24 people have been pulled out dead so far following the double slide. Guatemala's civil defence director Sergio Cabanas said on Monday that they had no hopes that

anyone may be pulled out alive. Scores more landslides and floods have struck other areas of the country.

Blair cancels book signing

N

EWS

Tony Blair has cancelled a planned book signing at Waterstone's in Piccadilly today (Wednesday) to prevent causing the public and the police "a lot of hassle".

JAPAN

Mr Blair said he would provide signed copies for the store to sell instead. Eggs and shoes were thrown at the former UK prime minister during anti-Iraq war protests at the Dublin signing following the release of his memoirs last week. Mr Blair described those involved as a "minority", adding that, on such occasions, "the protesters get all the publicity". During a television interview, Mr Blair said it was "not as if we need" to do signings to sell copies of his memoirs. Lindsey German, convener of the Stop The War Coalition, said the former prime minister "was too frightened to appear at the book signing because he knows that the protests represent widespread opposition to his war-mongering"

At least 45 have died in slides across the country following torrential rains, and more than 11,000 people have had to be evacuated from their homes.

IN BRIEF

Thousands more remain at risk from further flooding and landslides. Weeks of heavy rain have saturated Guatemala's mountainous terrain, causing hillsides to collapse suddenly. Parts of the country have seen the heaviest rainfall for half a century, according to Guatemala's national meteorological institute.

Anti-whaling activists sentenced Two Greenpeace anti-whaling activists have been given oneyear suspended jail sentences for stealing a box of whale meat in 2008. They said they had taken the box to expose corrupt practices in Japan's whaling programme. Commercial whaling is banned worldwide but Japan has continued to hunt whales as scientific research - while not hiding the fact that whale meat ends up in restaurants and shops. Greenpeace said the sentences were "wholly disproportionate" as the defendants had acted in the public interest. EL SALVADOR

$9 million found in barrel Police have found a plastic barrel stued with $9 million of suspected drug money on a farm in the centre of the country which reportedly belongs to a Guatemalan national. Police said money crammed into a second barrel found nearby is still being counted. It took the police two days to count the bundles of $100, $50 and $20 notes in the first barrel. According to local media reports an informant told police that $30m were hidden on the farm. GERMANY

Nuclear plant life span extended After a 12-hour meeting on Sunday, ministers announced that the older of Germany's 17 nuclear plants will remain in production for eight more years beyond 2021. More recent plants will remain in production until the 2030s, instead of being phased out by 2021 as the previous government wanted. Acknowledging widespread concerns about nuclear energy, Chancellor Angela Merkel said renewable sources were not developed enough to abandon nuclear power which was needed as a "bridge technology" until renewables were more viable.

Blitz marked 70 years on A remembrance service was held at St Paul's Cathedral, London, on Tuesday to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of the Blitz, during which thousands of people across the UK were killed and injured in the series of bombing raids on cities by Hitler's forces in 1940 and 1941. The City of London Salute celebrated those who worked to protect Britons - such as pilots, firefighters and nurses. The date of September 7th was chosen for the commemoration as it was exactly 70 years to the day that nearly 1,000 German planes crossed the channel to bomb non-military targets.

The British adopted the German word blitz, meaning lightning, to describe the tempest of heavy and frequent bombing raids carried out over Britain. More than 400 people were killed on the first day alone. Hundreds more were injured and huge fires burned across London. The scale of the attack rapidly escalated. In September alone, the German Air Force dropped 5,300 tons of high explosives on the capital in just 24 nights. London was not the only city targeted by the Luftwaffe. In Coventry, on November 14th, 1940, 500 German bombers dropped 500 tons of explosives and nearly 900 incendiary bombs in ten hours of

unrelenting bombardment, a tactic later emulated on an even greater scale by the RAF in its attacks on German cities. The commemoration event was organised jointly by the Lord Mayor of the City of London and the RAF Association. Those attending included people who worked as firefighters, nurses, ambulance workers, as well as those who were children at the time, Battle of Britain pilots and other military personnel. WWII veterans and current military personnel held a march-past through the City after the service while a WWII Spitfire, Lancaster and Dakota flew overhead.

Queen expected to visit Dublin The Lord Mayor of Dublin expects Queen Elizabeth II to visit the city within the next 12 months. A British monarch has not been to the Irish Republic since it became independent in 1921. On Monday, an independent republican member of Dublin City Council, Louise Minahan, put forward a motion opposing the visit but Mayor Gerry Breen said that he believed the Queen would receive a "warm welcome". He said: "I think there is a genuine affection there," adding that "the Irish people are very welcoming of English people and of the English nation." Louise Minahan's motion was

pushed off the agenda on Monday. After the meeting, during which about 50 republican protesters gathered outside, Ms Minahan said that she would continue her opposition to any visit. "We are protesting to highlight the opposition to the proposed invite to the British head of state and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Elizabeth Windsor. Earlier this year, Irish prime minister Brian Cowen said that he saw "no obstacle" to a visit and expected it to happen before

the end of 2011 when the current Irish president, Mary McAleese, stands down. A visit by Queen Elizabeth is also opposed by Sinn Fein, which has said "no official welcome should be accorded to any officer of the British armed forces of any rank". In August 1979, Lord Louis Mountbatten, a cousin of the Queen and an uncle of her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, was murdered, along with his 14-year-old grandson Nicolas, and a 15year-old local boy, in an IRA bomb attack on his boat off the coast of County Sligo.

Village thanked for saving Marines US ambassador Alan Salomont visited the small town of Jerez del Marquesado last week to honour the 19 surviving residents who helped rescue 24 Marines in March 1960 when their plane crashed in the nearby mountains. Two of the surviving Marines, James Frank Zaio and Francis John Rup, accompanied the ambassador. The accident happened when the right wing of the DC-4 that was transporting the marines from Naples to the US military bas of Rota in Cadiz province hit a peak in the Sierra Nevada. The plane lost an engine and crashed into the snow near

the edge of a precipice at an altitude of 2,600 metres. After walking for six hours, one of the Marines reached Jerez del Marquesado, which then had a population of 3,000, three times more than today. As neither the Marine nor the villagers spoke each other's language, he had to make a paper plane to explain that a real one had crashed. The villagers then

organised a rescue party and brought the men down safely. Mr Zaio and Mr Rup had not visited the village since although they both said they would never forget those nightmarish hours. Their surviving rescuers, all over 70 now, said the trek to the scene of the accident and back – on foot or by mule – had been worth it. One said the satisfaction of rescuing the men alive had overridden

all the memories of the difficulties and dangers of bringing them down the mountain, especially the ones who had been severely injured. The official opening of the “Fraternal Path of the Plane”, which follows the route taken by the rescuers, was followed by six days of celebrations, which included the presentation of a book about the rescue.

Food products at risk of extinction Five restaurants around Malaga province have joined together in the effort to save several typical agricultural products from extinction. They include Malaga lettuce, the lemons and sweet oranges of the

Guadalhorce valley, the Ronda pear and the olives of Alora, most of which are now mainly consumed by the people who grow them. Enrique Cintado, 60, who grows the Ronda pear, told

a local newspaper that he would make more money if he planted tomatoes instead. But he continues to look after the 60 pear trees he has in the mountains between Ronda and Ariate, to produce the largest crop of

Ronda pears in the world. He said he was carrying on a tradition his family started 160 years ago and he did not want to lose it: “The pear belongs to Ronda” Meanwhile, in Alora, the

Alora olive crop is expected to reach 30 tons this year, 20% more than last year. The olives are grown in 19 municipalities in the Sierra de las Nieves and the Guadalhorce valley and their cultivators even sell them on the

internet with orders coming from abroad.. Several restaurants now buy produce from the Red Terra Madre (Mother Earth Network) which was set up to promote at risk agricultural products.

Junta to decide on bullfight ban

*5$)&/ &4*(/4

The ongoing battle to ban bullfighting is about to move to its spiritual home - Andalucia. Less than two months after the Catalan regional parliament banned bullfighting, the Junta de Andalucia has been formally asked by the Animal Mistreatment Research Committee (CIMA) to change the region's Animal Protection law to include a ban on bullfighting. The proposal has already been passed to the Junta's legal advisers who will tell

Parliament this week if the proposal meets all the necessary legal requirements. If it does, CIMA will have four months in which to collect 75,000 supporters to back up their proposal. CIMA's proposed modification of the existing law bans bullfights and other spectacles in which bulls are made to suffer or are killed in bullrings or other places,

and applies to the so-called heifer runs that are traditional at small town ferias. Junta premier José Antonio Griñán has already commented that the Andalucian people would not understand a bullfighting ban.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Breath of fresh air

No male sex slaves here

I

T

n his review of “The Myths of the Civil War” by controversial historian Pio Moa, Stanley G Payne (right), who wrote the definitive book on fascism, says that what matters is not that Moa was correct on every issue – no historian can be, Payne says – but that his “critical, innovative” work brings a breath of fresh air to a vital area of contemporary Spanish history that has long been stultified by stereotypes and a “long dominant political correctness”. He particularly hits the nail on the head when he advises those who disagree with Moa to “demonstrate their disagreement in terms of objective research and serious analysis that takes up the serious issues that he raises, rather than seeking to suppress his work through a kind of censorship of silence or denunciatory diatribes more worthy of Fascist Italy or the Soviet Union than of democratic Spain”.

P

ayne accuses contemporary Spanish historians of avoiding the issues raised by the civil war or acting as if they had already been resolved – which is far from the case. For Payne, the Spanish Civil War will be debated for a long time, like the French and Revolutions. He praises Moa because his quartet of books about the war – its origins (1999), its Republican protagonists in their own words (2000), the downfall of the Republic (2001) and its myths (2003) – is “the most important endeavour by any historian writing in any language during the past two decades to reinterpret the history of the Republic and the Civil War”.

T

he public responded enthusiastically to The Myths of the Civil War - it sold more than 150,000, making it a bestseller by Spanish standards. However, Payne notes that with very few exceptions the response from historians and reviewers – when they didn’t ignore it or dismiss it as unworthy of consideration - was an icy hostility. Payne gives at least three reasons for this extremely negative response. One was the fantasy that it broke a "pact of silence" about troublesome issues relating to the Franco regime during the 1976-78 transition period. Payne says this pact did not exist, that the one adopted at that time had to do instead “with renouncing the politics of vengeance and beginning democracy for all with a clean slate”. In recent years, the Left has been very vocal about the sins of the Franco regime – no pact of silence for them – but when anyone on the Right mentions the sins of the Second Republic, the Left immediately invokes this pact. Do as I say not as I do.

T

he second reason is that contemporary critics of the long Franco dictatorship concentrate on the more sensationalist aspects, rejecting any serious historical analysis which makes it harder to understand how franquismo came about in the first place.

T

he third reason is the current domination of "politically correct" attitudes among intellectuals, the universities and the media in western countries, Payne says, noting that political correctness varies from country to country. In the United States, for example, it has concentrated on issues of race, resulting in what he calls "victimophilia". In Spain, he says, this has recently taken the form of highlighting the victims of the Franco regime, but there is little or no concern for victims of the Left. In recent years, this has led to what Payne calls a “mountain” of works on the iniquities of the Franco regime - many of which are genuine enough, but others are sometimes imagined or exaggerated - and a huge void on the other side of the political equation.

I

f they are only too eager to ignore the Republic's sins, contemporary leftwingers are even more eager to forget shortcomings of the leaders of the Republic, especially Azaña, Alcalá Zamora, Prieto and Largo Caballero, which Moa sets out – mainly in their own words – in his second book. Payne says that rarely has a political regime in the history of modern Europe had a more selfdestructive group of political leaders than those of the Second Republic: “By comparison, the leaders of the Weimar Republic in Germany were much of the time a seasoned group of wise democratic statesmen. With leadership such as that enjoyed by the Second Republic and policies as destructive as those of the leftist and revolutionary parties, to attribute its downfall to the conspiracy of a handful of wealthy reactionaries may make a good fairy tale or political fable, but has nothing to do with serious critical political history.”

F

ortunately, a degree of objectivity has been achieved in recent years, thanks to historians like Moa and Payne and Hugh Thomas, whose objective 1961 book on the civil war laid the groundwork for future historians. More and more historians are coming round to the idea that both sides were "almost equally" responsible for originating the conflict, and were almost equally atrocious in its prosecution.

I

shall now try to track down historians who can write objectively about the Franco years.

he other night, I had a long and interesting conversation with a couple of my friends about male prostitution. No joke. The chat occurred on the day that interior ministry officials announced that they broke up a ring that brought in as many as 80 young men, mostly from Maranhao state in northeast Brazil, to work in the sex industry. Some of the guys, the majority in their early 20s, said that they were led to believe that they were going to work as models or gogo dancers here in Spain . Their “bosses” gave them Viagra and other stimulants so they could remain sexually active for 24 hours, they told police.

M

en as sex slaves? Maybe in some third world countries such as Pakistan and India where it is has been proven males are sold to work in the sex industry - but certainly not in Spain which has become a Mecca for gay tourists and where prostitution is abundant.

A

pologies unnecessary

T

he news of this sex trafficking ring, which yielded 14 arrests in Barcelona, León and Málaga, made headlines around the world. It was an unusual story for two reasons – the most obvious, because they were men and secondly because the guys’ own testimonies that they were misled before they were brought to Spain were unbelievable.

O

ne of my friends wondered if men can easily be forced to prostitute themselves as easily as women. I told him I didn’t think so because prostitution thrives in Brazil. Brazilians are non-discriminatory when it comes to the sex industry. I am most certain most of these guys knew exactly what they were going to be doing before they were brought to Spain, and were enticed by the money they could rake in.

W

hile no official figures exist on how many men work as “chaperos” (as they are known in Spanish), some experts believe there are as many as 4,000 in Spain. Fundación Triángulo, the Madrid-based gay and lesbian collective, conducted a study two years ago on male sex workers and almost all of them answered that they were in it of their own free will. Most described themselves as being heterosexual and said they did it for the extra money.

B

ecause prostitution is in a legal limbo here in Spain – it is neither prohibited nor protected – the number of websites where men offer there sexual services has proliferated. By just perusing four sites, I counted more than eight dozen men advertising their services.

M

y El País colleague Emilio De Benito published accounts of three male hustlers who said they work independently and on their own terms because they want to make money. On Tuesday, police continued the investigation, raiding several brothels in Madrid and arresting five more suspected ringleaders who were charged with promoting prostitution and violating labour laws.

J

esús Neira has said he doesn’t need to apologise to anyone after he was convicted and ordered to pay a €1,800 fine with a 10-month licence suspension for drink-driving. No, he doesn’t have to apologise to the other drivers whose lives he put at risk for having a blood-alcohol ratio three times the legal limit. No, he doesn’t have to say he’s sorry for letting down the women he supposedly defended as head of the Madrid government’s nowdismantled gender violence observatory. Nor does he have to express remorse for all the nasty statements he has made about everybody from the prime minister to the woman he gallantly rescued, Violeta Santander, two summers back from the hands of her alleged beating boyfriend Antonio Puerta. Jesús Neira explains he wasn’t inebriated but instead had drunk one glass of wine and one liqueur at dinner, which didn’t mix well with the medication he was taking. He sticks by this story despite the testimonies of countless physicians interviewed on television that medicine doesn’t raise the blood-alcohol ratio, only alcohol does. He refused to step down from his plum post given to him after he woke up from a 250-day-plus coma by Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre. There are suggestions that the coma was induced by malpractice at a Madrid hospital where he was taken after Puerta delivered a powerful punch when he tried to get involved in the lovers' spat. But he maintains it was Puerta that knocked him out. Now Aguirre has decided to abolish the anti-gender violence unit after Neira refused to hand in his resignation. One of Aguirre’s spokesman said that it had nothing to do with the Neira case but was part of a government restructuring announced in April. “I didn’t steal anything, I didn’t lie nor did I break the law,” Neira told Antena 3 television shortly before his conviction. That's what he says, but he did break the trust that many for still unexplained and uncanny reasons placed in him.

Juliette Robb just thought I would write to say that on many occasions I have had to go to La Trocha and park up to go to the cinema. I was unable to drive at the time due to recent operation, so my friend dropped me off whilst she went to find a car space as near as possible to the entrance. There were no spaces at the invalidity car park due to one van being parked over two bays and other cars occupying all the spaces. Not being fit enough to climb the stairs I waited in a queue at the lift. Couldn’t get on it first time as all the keep fitters(!) off to the gym were waiting, complete with bags, and there was no room. A load more of keep fitters arrived and I had to juggle to get back out of the lift, much to their annoyance as they had blocked me in.Leaving the cinema and heading to the car park I noticed the

Stargazing

Coin keep fitters all coming out and they all went to their cars in the invalidity car spaces, EVERY ONE of them. They all exited the car park and whilst I waited for my friend, yet another car arrived, parked up in the invalidity spaces and out got.....yes you have it, a keep fitter.Nothing invalid about his walking ability nor health. These spaces are right outside the security office where a man sits all the time and yet NOTHING stops these people from parking haphazardly and incorrectly in the invalidity spaces whislt denying access to those who need it. It must be so difficult for these keep fitters having to possibly climb the stairs, with only one lift in place, to get to the machines to keep them fit!!!!! I feel for them. Whilst La Trocha is keen to get people into their complex it seems sad that

they don't have the capacity within their remit to stop fit, healthy people parking in these spaces specifically marked out for people who are not fit.Possibly the only way they will appreciate these things is if arthritis suddenly sets in or a weight drops on their feet ! It seems a total waste of time to have these designated parking spaces but I suppose if La Trocha are seen to do the right thing, and by law have to have designated space, then they don’t have to implement it. Seems to be the trend these days.

Linda McKeller & Zia Tennock La Cala de Mijas With regards to the letter from Marjut Arvinen, which you published on Wednesday 25th August, we would like to add our voices to the sentiments expressed in that letter. We started a programme of sterilization of the feral cats in our area in La Cala de Mijas, three years ago. Initially we were given some financial assistance from the local hotel and from a nearby urbanization. The rest of the money we have raised ourselves by selling books, and from donations from like-minded people – Spanish and English. To date, we have sterilized over 100 cats, given veterinary assistance to those

cats in need of it and, as a last resort, put to sleep those who could not be helped. We have also managed to re-home a few cats and kittens. We have noticed a significant fall in the number of feral cats in our area. The only problem we have now is that domestic cats are being dumped here, often not neutered. We too feel that Mijas town hall should be helping us, not penalizing us. We are not personally asking for any financial assistance, merely an understanding of what we are trying to do to improve our area for everyone concerned, and to improve the life, however short, of the feral cats. We do feed them, but in a responsible manner

– only dried food and water. Unfortunately there are some misguided holidaymakers who put down left- over pizza, Chinese food, etc., which is a problem, especially in the summer. We clear this food away ourselves. It is lamentable that the only solution Mijas has is to impose a fine for feeding the cats, or to round them up and send them to a fate which none of us like to contemplate. We would like Mijas town hall to treat animal welfare sensibly and sympathetically, and we are sure that local communities would respond positively.

Jonathan Smythe Marbella I heard on Sky News this morning (Monday) that the Cabin Crew of British Airways are once again “in talks” about going on strike again. What is it about this time? The only thing that Sky news would call it was “pay and conditions”. And when are they talking about going on strike? Yep, Christmas time! What I don’t really get is why if they think the terms and conditions are so bad they don’t leave us all alone to

enjoy our holidays etc and get themselves another job.But they won’t do that, will they, as they get much more pay and better looked after at BA than any other airline already. In such economic times, one would think that they’d be happy to have a job to get on with. So many people have been made redundant because the companies they worked for have not been able to survive and have not

been able to find another job. Perhaps that’s what BA cabin crews want. If not, they should think again before such rash actions when it is reported that BA are already struggling. This is a very shortsighted, not to mention selfish action once again by BA staff. I for one won’t dare to book a ticket with them as I can’t be certain I’ll get to my destination. Their loss is Air Lingus’ or Monarch’s gain!

Relative positions of Jupiter & Uranus

Uranus, the first Planet to be discovered In ancient times people knew that there were 5 strange objects in the sky that wandered throughout the stars so they called them Planetès from the Greek word meaning wanderers. We call them planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were well known to ancient astronomers but in 1781 Sir William Herschel, a German born but English astronomer and music composer discovered a brand new planet, Uranus. The name Uranus, which has been the butt of a thousand schoolboys’ gags for many years, was not his first choice. Originally Herschel was going to name the Planet ‘George’s Star’ after King George III. But this name was not very popular outside of Britain, especially with the French and Americans who were at war with us at the time! It’s surprising that Uranus wasn’t discovered before 1781 as it can sometimes come just within the range of being seen with the naked eye and there is evidence to suggest that it had actually been seen before Herschel discovered it, but it was considered to be just another star as it moves so slowly against the background stars. And if you have a pair of binoculars or a small telescope then this month you will be able to see Uranus for yourself. For the whole of September Uranus will be less than 1° from the planet Jupiter so it will appear in the same field of view as Jupiter as seen through your binoculars. Go outside after about 10pm and locate Jupiter, which is the very bright ‘star’ you can see rising in the east, now using your binoculars, focus on Jupiter and just slightly above it you will see a tiny

blue coloured disc; this is Uranus. Uranus, which is pronounced with the ‘A’ as in apple not ‘A’ as in day, is a strange world. The Earth has a tilt of about 23° from being straight up whereas Uranus is titled over by more than 97° which means that during its 84 year orbit around the Sun then it is in fact rolling around on its side with one pole receiving 42 years of sunlight and then 42 years of darkness. It is about 3 billion km from the Sun which means that the light and heat it receives from the Sun is about 1/400th of the light that we receive making it a very cold dark place to be. It has more than 27 moons orbiting about it; the five largest, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon are all named after characters from Shakespeare’s plays. So stop tittering about its name and go outside and show Uranus to all your friends!

The ISS. Our friends at NASA are sending the International Space Station back again this weekend. Look to the North West on Sunday September 12th at 9:35pm and you will see it passing at 17,000mph across the sky. Don’t forget to get the kids to give the astronauts a big wave because the captain says he’s going to lean out of the window and wave back at you!

Community Time to get the kids’ creative juices flowing If your children have found the long, hot summer a bit of a bore, now’s the time to get them inspired and rekindle their imagination and creativity. The new term at Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools is open to everyone aged 4 to 18, you don’t have had previous experience to attend. The most important requirement is enthusiasm, there are no auditions and classes are held out of school hours and rotated so that every student gets one class each of drama, dance and singing at each session.

The school has been established since 1988 and has over 560 thriving branches worldwide offering weekly classes. It boasts Philip Schofield as its patron. Pupils from the Marbella, Fuengirola and Gibraltar schools recently took part in the Stagecoach Showcase 2010 at the Teatro Ciudad, Marbella. This term there are already many things in the pipeline for the children to get involved in. Director Warren Webley plans to produce another show next April as a showcase for

Lucy Rees back again at SEPE SEPE, the Spanish society for the protection of horses and donkeys, has Lucy Rees returning once again to the Lauro Golf Equestrian Centre, La Alqueria, Alhaurin de la Torre on the 15th 16th and 17th of October to do yet another natural horsemanship clinic. She has done courses at SEPE’s installations on her clinic tour for the last 3 years and has gained respect from many Spanish horsemen that were previously very sceptical of her gentle approach of gaining a horse’s trust and how she works with many problem cases and young horses at her clinics. Lucy Rees is well known for her books on riding and equine behaviour and she is the author of The Horse’s Mind, used by many natural horse trainers throughout the world as a bible on basic natural training techniques. In 1987, there was a film made of her experiences by HTV: To Ride a Wild Horse. This looked at Lucy’s experiences as she went from breaking in horses in Wales, to looking at how the cowboys in Arizona tackled breaking their horse. She first of all moved to Portugal from Wales, where she lived with her Lusitano stallion Iberico and dog Caddi, but for many years she has been

A Fête Worse an Death

The final Part

On the morning of the performance Allison and I had one last practise at the church hall before our afternoon appearance.

T

hings went well, very technically correct and we agreed that more practise would be of no further advantage. I had a very light lunch at home; hunger at this time was not in the equation since the butterflies felt like Harrier jump jets flitting around my stomach. I arrived early at the Cricket Pavilion which was being used as dressing rooms and changed into my dance outfit. The full length mirrors of the changing room revealed that I was still a pretty good looking guy, even though I was uncomfortable about the tight black trousers and the red silk shirt with lots of sequins, but no buttons and open to the waist. I thought about a chest wig, but thoughts of a greater humiliation as it flew off my chest mid-performance restrained me from this. There was a knock on the dressing room door and Allison called through the door, “Tom, can I come in?” I

opened the door to greet her and she looked absolutely stunning in her dress. It was a red silk; with a bolero type jacket over a low cut bodice, it had sequins that not only matched my shirt but encircled and enhanced her cleavage, the skirt was long with a split up the side that gave a brief glimpse of her leg up to the thigh. “Close your mouth, big boy, and read this,” she instructed, offering a sheet of A4 paper - her eyes twinkled mischievously. I also noticed she was carrying a bottle and two glasses in the other hand. The paper was a printout of an e-mail; it was from Julia, and as I read it Allison walked to the dressing table and poured two glasses of an amber liquid. In short the e -mail was an apology to Allison; Julia said that she had been thinking very seriously about her behaviour on the night of the dinner. She’d come to realise that what I had said to

her was true and that she would sooner have a Mum who was happy and enjoying life than wasting away with grief. She said that I seemed like a very nice man and that maybe in the future we could get to know each other. “Well!”, I exclaimed as I finished reading. “Yes, exactly - thank you Tom, for your patience and understanding - here drink this!” ordered Allison as she glided towards me offering one of the glasses. ‘Tequila Salute!’ she toasted and downed hers in one gulp, her eyes flashed under long lashes and a devilish smile came to her face. I did as I was ordered and knocked the liquor back as she had done; it burnt down my mouth and throat, my eyes watered and I seemed to lose my ability to speak for a second or two. Allison topped up the glasses and we repeated the procedure. She put the glasses to one side,

then turned and slinked towards me. One leg appeared from the split in the skirt and wrapped itself around me. I felt her hand slip over my hip to slide down and grip my buttock. Her closeness was as intoxicating as the liquor. “These trousers are a lot sexier than those baggy things you normally wear, Tom!” she breathed huskily. I was about to ask if they were the same reason she’d referred to me as ‘Big Boy’ but my enquiry was cut short as her lips closed on my open mouth. We descended into a long, sweet, sensuous kiss. A knock and a discreet cough interrupted our passion. It was Nadia in her role as stage manager and compere. “Time for that later, you two - you’re on next - show-time!” We followed her laughing and stepped onto the stage as she introduced us. There was quite a large audience; they encircled half of the

www.thenewsonline.es

stage as they sat at the front in their deck chairs or stood to the rear. The welcoming applause died as Allison strutted to the opposite side of the stage as we took up our initial positions for the dance. The music started, Allison then spun towards me whipping off her long skirt to reveal a short costume that ended in a tassled fringe at the top of her thighs. This action, I noticed, nearly caused poor old Mr Bartholomew to choke on his ice-cream as he sat in his wheelchair at the front. The music built and we were lost in the dance; we postured, lunged, dipped, skipped, thrust and as the dance finished we ended in a pose similar to our clinch in the dressing room, only this time Allison was gripping my other buttock. There was a stunned silence for a moment until some one yelled “Ole`!” from the back of the audience. I saw that it was John Cartwright who

of our summer story by P. Tate

was standing in a dripping wet uniform and obviously on a short reprieve from 'Drop the Cop'. The audience then erupted into clapping and cheering as Allison and I left the stage. As we passed Nadia she whispered, “you two - are dark horses!” Nadia went forward and cried to the audience. “There you go everyone - our very own Catherine Zeta Jones and Antonio Banderas! - and remember if you want to dance like that, Allison and Tom are giving dance instruction in the Church Hall every Wednesday night.” The applause rose in volume again and I lent towards Allison looking into those mischievous blue eyes that I loved. “Allison, you are a very naughty woman!” “My darling Tom,” she said pulling closer to me, “as our dear Nadia would say - you ain’t seen nothin' yet!”

Step into the shadows thrown by thousands of candles - and fall under the spell of Al-Andalus Written by Andrea MacLean

T

he internationally renowned flamenco guitar virtuoso Paco de Lucia is one of the artists set to grace the stage at this year's cultural programme for the Luna Mora Festival in the inland town of Guaro.

A

nd this year is even more special because the artists will be performing in the newly opened outdoor Luna Mora Auditorium. Paco de Lucia will be on stage at 23.00 hours Saturday September 11th and the concert by Diana Navarro, which launches the festival on Friday, has already been sold out. The Malaga

Symphony Orchestra will be on stage the following weekend.

A

nd it is not just a musical pleasure in store - each year Guaro is transformed on the second and third weekends of September into a Moorish market place - and if you have never joined the many thousands drawn into the town for this special celebration then make this the year to go. For those of you with late summer visitors it's a must-see - an enriching slice of Al Andalus to add to the holiday memories.

S

town takes on a magical, warm glow. What makes all this so special is that this is a medieval showpiece lit in medieval style - electric lighting is banned and the main square and each street is transformed by 20,000 candles placed along pavements, in doorways and on window lintels and balconies. The air is filled with heady smells and restaurants and bars have menus designed to draw you in when you want to take a break from wandering the candle-lit streets. After you have been refreshed head back into the throng again - you will definitely find something you will want to buy to take home. And

tep into Guaro , wander along the main square and slip off into the tiny streets and step back in time to Andalucia's Moorish history. You will find yourself wandering through a Moorish souk, crammed with a rich variety of stalls selling sweet mint tea and other delicacies, jewellery, crafts, chocolates and cheeses. The senses come under assault as acrobats and jugglers amuse the throng, and the air is filled with the sound of music from street entertainers.

T

he market opens at 5pm - and by 6pm, as dusk begins to fall, the

there is plenty of time because nothing closes early.

D

rive into Guaro and you will be directed to parking areas from where it is just a ten minute walk back to the main square and the narrow, twisting

streets of this small town, which has a history going back to pre-historic and Roman times as well as the imprint of its Moorish legacy. To find out more visit www.guaro.es and if you would like to book tickets for one of the shows in the new auditorium visit www.malagaentradas.com

British Prejudice to American Pride

BY JOSH GORDON Starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman

email: editorial@thenewsonline.es

O

Rom coms starring Jennifer Aniston have been having a torrid time at the Box Office recently and her latest, The Switch, has positively bombed in the US. Which is a shame because this is a lot better than the previous outings. Jen plays Kassie, a New York singleton who wants a baby and finds a handsome sperm donor (Patrick Wilson) prepared to supply the necessary. Her best

friend Wally (Bateman) is a New York stock trader who is a pessimistic anxietyridden introvert who has been secretly in love with Kassie for years but has never plucked up courage to tell her. During her tacky "pregnancy party" Wally drunkenly staggers into the bathroom where the sperm sample has rather casually been left lying around, and decides to switch it for his

own and rather conveniently forgets all about it. Kassie reappears in his life seven years later with her son Sebastian in tow. And guess what,he is a pessimistic anxiety-ridden introvert... cue for some funny scenes between Wally and the boy (well played by Thomas Robinson). Hmm, wonder how it all ends.... Juliette Lewis and Jeff Goldblum are able sidekicks so no real

reason not to give it a chance. Director Gordon has baulked at making Wally unattractive - and therefore not fanciable by Kassie and so did not pose the question of importance of looks over substance. The only thing unattractive about Bateman are his awful sweaters so he should have plucked up the courage to ask the girl out.

Tinker, Tailor... for big screen

Straight to DVD for bullfight hero

John Le Carré's iconic spy novel "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" was a huge television series success with Alec Guiness in the George Smiley role, plus a raft of British acting talent. La Carré is pushing 80 and is about to have his 22nd novel, "Our Kind of

Traitor", in bookshops soon, and five of his novels look like they are heading for the silver screen. Brad Pitt has an option on "Night Manager" and Gary Oldman and Colin Firth will be starring in "Tinker, Tailor..."

A movie about Spain's legendary bullfighter Manolete and his passionate society mistress Lupe Sino sounds like it should have everything. But the movie "The Passion Within", starring two Oscar winners in the shape of Adrien Brody (Best Actor for The Pianist) and Spain's own Penelope Cruz (best supporting for Vicky, Cristina Barcelona) has failed to secure a cinema release. The film skilfully weaves together footage of Manolete with Brody's scenes and the backdrop of 40s Spain is well realised. Maybe the studio thought, on reflection, that there was little public appetite

for a movie glorifying a bullfighter. Whatever the reason, it has gone straight to DVD and is now available.

ne of my all time favourite books is Jane Austin’s “Pride and Prejudice” and I have to say that, in my opinion, the best screen version of it has to be the BBC’s 1995 production. We all know and love this classic story, and all us ladies wish to meet our very own Mr. Darcy. Then again, Mr. Darcy can be an insufferable man, who says hurtful and inconsiderate things, and yet we try so very hard to penetrate his outer shell to find the kind gentleman within.

I

t is with great pleasure I shareshare my favourite quotes and scenes from this classic tale, and point out which is the better Miss Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Yes, I am going to compare the BBC’s version, starring Colin Firth and Jennider Ehle, with the 2005 movie that starred Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadden which was, quite honestly, dreadful.

O

n the night that we meet Mr. Darcy for the first time, we get an insight into his personality - when asked his opinion of Miss Bennet his response is: “Barely tolerable, I dare say. But not handsome enough to tempt me. You'd better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles. You're wasting your time with me.” This scene may be short, but it’s important and Firth’s delivery of the line is perfect. However, McFadden comes across as weak and lacks the spirit necessary to the character.

I

n the next example, this scene and quote is utterly brilliant, filled with disdain and arrogance. This is not the best way to propose to a girl - “Miss Elizabeth. I have

struggled in vain and I can bear it no longer. These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings with the single object of seeing you... I had to see you. I have fought against my better judgment, my family's expectations, the inferiority of your birth by rank and circumstance. All these things I am willing to put aside and ask you to end my agony.”

H

e certainly deserves the following rebuke “You're mistaken, Mr. Darcy. The mode of your declaration merely spared me any concern I might have felt in refusing you, had you behaved in a more gentleman-like manner. You could not have made me the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it. From the very beginning your manners impressed me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit and your selfish disdain for the feelings of others. I had not known you a month before I felt you were the last man in the world whom I could ever marry!”

N

eedless to say all turns out well. I was quite disappointed by the 2005 movie, it had great potential but lacked vastly in performance, wardrobe and seemed to miss the essence of the period completely. My two biggest problems with this production were the miscasting of Darcy and Bennet, and the strange sculpture museum at Pemberley.

T

he moral of this story is, when it comes to an authentic costume drama, no one does it better than the BBC.

There may be a great urge within to have a good old moan at someone. There is a lot of work to get on with, many things now need getting on top of, but you just can’t help complaining - it is your way of getting through the mundane. The positive side of this is the things you put your energy into now will have a powerful impact on your environment. This is because you are not afraid to tackle all those jobs that no-one else is willing to get on with. Home improvements, love enhancements and making your surroundings and love life more rosy and cosy than it has ever been before, is the mode of the week. Sweet moments arise for creating beauty, balancing your inner emotional world from the corners of stress that are still floating around in your life. Use this space to create an atmosphere that you feel comfortable with. A rush of well-being is felt by the weekend when some plans start to formulate. Life has been a balancing act of two extremes lately and now you are being given an element of freedom from some sort of duty or responsibility that has occupied your life in a full-on way. You have recently reached a very clear understanding of a situation and although you may wish it to be different, you are well aware of the reality. With this knowledge it is up to you to make the next move, the ball is in your court, the outcome is likely to be more positive than you anticipate. When things look too volatile or dangerous you have a tendency to withdraw - call it self-preservation - while you sort out what it is you are actually thinking and feeling. This week you will have the opportunity to find your courage and be brave enough to take a verbal risk, finding a new entry point within a difficult scenario. It will put you firmly in the driving seat, giving you the ability to make a great difference to someone’s life. Security and stability is coming your way and a feeling of peace is now entering your world once more. You will start to feel more enthusiastic and engaged in life, it is a new beginning for you. This week you will be looking for what you share in common with another, rather than focusing on your differences - this will help build and strengthen existing relationships and in turn create further harmony in your life. Shortly you will be entering into a phase where you will have more choices the world is about to open up to you and you will be presented with many options and exciting routes. Learning and education opens up your mind to wider possibilities, your circle of friends and acquaintances also increase, and you find yourself in the centre of a new terrain. It is like you have been given a blank sheet of paper to write a brand new chapter in your book of life.

LIBRA

Is there some news you are waiting on hearing that would ease a burden? There will not be much longer to wait, something is brewing, things are being sorted out behind the scenes even if it appears that nothing is happening. Mercury is retrograde and when this happens it feels as though nothing ever happens fast enough. Trust your instincts and let go of a plan - trust that you September 23rd - will be carried to where you are meant to be soon enough. nd

Stuffed Green Peppers Ingredients:

(serves 4-6)

● 6 green peppers ● ½ kilo minced beef ● 60gr chopped onion ● salt and pepper to taste ● 1 whole tin peeled tomatoes (entera), chopped ● 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ● 100gr uncooked rice ● 4 fl oz cup water ● 90gr grated Cheddar cheese ● 2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed tomato soup ● Water as needed

Method ● Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Cut the tops off the peppers, and remove the seeds. Cook the peppers in boiling water for 5 minutes then drain on kitchen paper. Sprinkle a little salt inside each pepper, and set aside. ● In a large frying pan, saute the beef and onions until beef is browned. Drain off excess fat, and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, rice, 4 fl oz water and Worcestershire sauce. Cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until rice is tender. Remove from

heat, and stir in the cheese. ● Preheat the oven to 350º F. (175ºC). Stuff each pepper with the beef and rice mixture, and place peppers open side up in a baking dish. In a medium bowl, combine tomato soup with just enough water to make the soup a gravy consistency. Pour over the peppers. ● Bake covered for 25 to 35 minutes, until heated through and cheese is melted and bubbly.

You are in a good space at the moment, Scorpio, well able to see what another needs and in a position to make changes accordingly to positively affect someone’s life. Your love life, your financial position and outlook coupled with the ability to see a solution to an old and weary problem is putting you in a very strong position. There is magic in the air and a chance to increase your earning and social capacity – let your imagination soar.

SAGITTARIUS A familiar chord is calling you, one from the past that resonates so resoundingly, you instantly acknowledge its presence. It interrupts your equilibrium and you are left wondering why you have to go over this old ground. A conversation needs to be had yet again but this time it is slightly different, it has a new earthy beat that manages to change the nature of the nd November 22 - recording. There is a situation in your life that you are reacting to - taking a step back from it and viewing it from the position of a 3rd person could help you to understand the entirety of the problem. Try not to over-think a situation that has been puzzling you. Lately you have stopped investing vital energy in a project or in someone as all efforts have fallen on stony ground. Instead of going against the tide it is time to take a break, re-evaluate and flow with the stream. Listen to your instincts, accept things as they are and move on to where your heart tells you that you need to be. That which inspires you is calling.

A meaningful, deep discussion needs to occur and this is not the time to shy away from rocking the boat. For true understanding to happen, a subject needs stripping back to the bone to get to the core issue. Friends show up just when you need them most, solutions to problems occur at the 11th hour and coincidences abound. It is a week when you are dazzled by the seemingly lucky breaks that are manifesting.

Over the next few weeks we're going to do something for your pet! Making dog treats at home can be fun for you and your children. Because each pet may have special needs make sure to review each recipe to ensure it is appropriate for your dog. Remember these are treat recipes, not "dog food", so they should not be used in excess. Here are a few pointers this week and the recipes will follow later.

What you will need... SHAPES AND CUTTERS ● Biscuit cutters are available in countless shapes, sizes and themes. Make treats that are suitable for the size of your dog – something the size of a tennis ball is no good if you have a chihuahua! If you prefer not to buy biscuit cutters you can use the open end of a juice can or a small glass, but be careful what you use with children around.

INGREDIENTS ● One of the benefits of making your own treats is that you can control the quality of what goes in the treats. We suggest using the same quality products as you would if you were making food for yourself. For example use natural peanut butter rather than products with a lot of added sugar. Use organic flours and meals if they are available to you.

No evidence implants are toxic

Milk can stop garlic breath Garlic is good for you because it contains several vitamins and minerals, but once eaten, it can cause bad breath and body odour lasting hours or even days.

Tests on a type of breast implant filled with an unapproved gel have not produced any evidence they are unsafe, UK experts have said. Concerns were raised about Poly Implant Prostheses - or PIPs - after a French inquiry identified problems. UK plastic surgeons said the findings should reassure women - but advised that any ruptured implants should be removed. Earlier this year, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said no more PIPs should be implanted and that any remaining should be returned to the manufacturer. The French company which produced PIPs has gone into

administration. All the devices were recalled in France earlier this year. The inquiry by the French association of plastic surgeons reported that from 2005 on, the company had dispensed with the protective barrier and was also using a gel with a composition different from that approved. French plastic surgeons contacted the gel manufacturers for any

studies that showed how the altered version might react with the human body, the UK plastic surgeons organisation BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) said. There were none, as the manufacturers had understood the substance was to be used in mattresses. The French plastic surgeons are carrying out further tests. An MHRA

spokesman said it was reassuring that the UK test results showed no evidence of any associated risks with the filler material. He added that clinicians and women would be updated once these results of the French tests are available and further advice on patient management would be provided as necessary. He said about 50,000 British women may have the implants.

Plain water, and some foods, such as mushrooms and basil, may help neutralise garlic smells, but recent tests show that a glass of milk is the most effective. In tests with raw and cooked cloves, researchers at Ohio State University found that milk "significantly reduced" levels of the sulphur compound allyl methyl sulphide, or AMS, which cannot be broken down in the gut during digestion, and so it is released from the body in the breath and sweat. They said it is the water and fat in milk that deodorises the breath and found that mixing milk with garlic in the mouth before swallowing had a higher odour neutralising effect than drinking milk after eating the garlic.

Male cats cause fewer allergies Whether you love them or hate them, cats are among the most common causes of allergies, affecting twice as many people as dogs do. These allergies are caused by proteins found in feline dander, urine and saliva. Some scientists suspect that the darker a cat’s coat, the greater the likelihood of it inducing allergic reactions, and demonstrated this in a small US study in 2000,

involving 300 patients with allergies. They found that people with dark-coloured cats were two to four times as likely to have moderate to severe symptoms as those who either owned cats with lighter coats or did not own a cat. Additional studies found that female cats produce

Halo or red card? It’s the little things you do – or don’t do – over time that add up to the bigger picture of healthy, glowing and youthful skin and hair. So, do you deserve a halo or a red card for your beauty routine?

Red card offences: Sun beds: Apart from the fact that they increase the likelihood of skin cancer, use them often enough and you are guaranteed a mock-croc complexion with added pigmentation and premature wrinkles. No protection: Always protect your complexion with a moisturiser or foundation with an integral SPF, and don’t worry that you won’t get enough Vitamin D. Experts say that 15 minutes of sunshine on your arms per day is plenty. Grime: You can forget to remove your make-up once in a while, but make a habit of it and your skin will soon start to look dull and clogged. Night time is when your complexion regenerates best at every age, so keeping a layer of old make up over the top will inhibit the process. Moisturiser: Don’t neglect your body skin - leave it dry and you’ll find it ages way before your face, especially over your chest and hands. Use a hydrating body cream or oil at least three times a week to keep your skin flexible, comfortable and soft.

Using an exfoliator on both face and body ensures that dead skin cells are whisked away to leave younger, fresher and brighter looking skin beneath. Not only does exercise keep your heart in peak condition and excess weight at bay, but it also increases circulation and blood flow which eliminates toxins. You’ll be seeing smoother skin, less cellulite and a gorgeously toned body. Study reckons that fakes are OK Ever crumbled and given in to temptation and bought that fab, fake Chloé bag off the looky looky man, or picked up the latest in designer watches at a fraction of the real price? Shoppers are usually pretty happy with the price but have a nagging worry that their purchase is possibly aiding organised crime or helping to bring down the Louis Vuitton empire. But a new EU-funded report controversially reckons that it is acceptable to buy fake designer goods. The study,

which is co-written by a UK Home Office adviser, says consumers benefit from the market for knock-off designer gear at knock-down prices.

As Coronation Street heads towards its 50th birthday it continues to be the "one that got away" from the BBC. Creator Tony Warren told an audience at the Edinburgh Festival last week that he sent an early version of the show to the BBC - "and I'm still waiting to hear back from them!" Kia’s fire risk recall on cars Car maker Kia has discovered that optional ‘mood lighting’ fitted around speaker surrounds on the Soul, and in the centre console in the Sorento could overheat. Kia is expected to replace the wiring system in the mood lighting, which flashes in time to music. The recall applies to Souls sold between September 2009 and June 2010 and Sorentos sold between September 2009 and July 2010.

Triumph and tragedy at the San Marino MotoGP

Motorists stuck for days in roadworks

Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa dies from multiple injuries after horror crash Dani Pedrosa won the San Marino MotoGP for Honda, beating fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo and Italian Valentino Rossi on their Yamahas.

M6 toll relief road a failure A privately-built toll road, which was hailed as the answer to congestion on Britain's motorways, has been an expensive failure according to a new study just published. Traffic jams around Birmingham are at least as bad as they were before the road was opened as motorists refuse to pay to use the 27-mile stretch which was intended to end gridlock on the M6. When it opened, drivers were charged £2 to use the road. But a series of above inflation increases has seen the bill rise to a whopping £5. This has coincided with the number of motorists willing to pay falling dramatically, the study says. In the spring of 2006 it attracted just under 60,000 drivers a day. By the start of this year, the figure had fallen to just over 40,000, marginally more than when the toll opened. Those who are willing to pay can enjoy a far quicker journey during the rush hour, especially when travelling southbound when using the relief road takes around 40 minutes - about half the time needed on the M6. But at other times the time saving is marginal - in many cases little more than five minutes. The report by the Campaign for Better Transport, an environmental group, went on to say that this means the toll is poor value for the motorists.

"The M6 toll has provided so little congestion relief that the Highways Agency has been forced to allocate hundreds of millions of pounds for additional capacity," the report adds.

Motorists are currently stuck in the world's worst roadworks, with 60-mile tailbacks and days of delays But some have little choice. For five days, thousands of Chinese motorists have been stuck in the world's worst traffic jam that stretches for 60 miles. And even worse, the 9-day queue is expected to remain backed up until at least the end of the month. The mother of all road works have spawned a temporary and very slowmoving community. Truck drivers, their vehicles packed with coal from Inner Mongolia, wash themselves in the scorching heat by the roadside, play cards to pass the time, and sleep beneath their lorries. Occasionally they get back into the vehicles to move forward a few inches – then turn off the engines and get out again.

nightmare has led to authorities posting 400 police officers in the area to prevent the frustrations of drivers from boiling over and to try to prevent criminals taking advantage of stationary vehicles to rob motorists. "One night, around eight robbers attacked six trucks and cars, and ran away with a total 60,000 yuan (£7,000). One of the old drivers we know was even injured and the windshield of his truck was broken," the wife of one of the drivers told the Beijing Morning Post

The

Proposals include allowing cars to use the hard shoulder during the rush hour. But this, according to the Campaign, would cost between £300 to £500 million. "Toll roads are not, and will never be, a solution to congestion on Britain's roads, no matter how attractive they may appear to cash-strapped politicians desperate to deliver otherwise unaffordable road schemes," the report concludes. However an AA spokesman defended the M6 toll road. "Drivers who use it are happy to pay the premium, because it avoids the horribly lorry-congested M6.”

Toshack ready to quit Wales job Welsh boss John Toshack feels he has taken the side as far as he can after the 1-0 loss in Montenegro to open the 2012 Euro qualifying campaign. He may leave before next month's games against Bulgaria and Switzerland, but would stay if needed . Former Wales midfielder Mickey Thomas said: "Only two men could change things around quickly - Ryan Giggs and Brian Flynn, that combination could get the Welsh team going.” Flynn is Wales U21 manager.

The event will be held at their polideportivo ground in San Pedro from 10am till approx 1pm. Dream ends for Women’s World Cup team Prior to the final England had only conceded two tries during the tournament, both against the USA. But that defence was stretched to its limits as the Black Ferns laid siege to the try-line. And New Zealand won the women's rugby World Cup for the fourth successive time when they overcame three sinbinnings to beat England 13-10 at Harlequins' Stoop Memorial ground.

Britain's Murray made a shock third-round exit at the US Open after suffering a dramatic slump against 25th seed Wawrinka.

And with the Scot frustrated and struggling physically, Wawrinka prevailed 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3.

Murray served for a twoset lead at one stage but fortunes shifted wildly as erratic form and injury problems saw both men take and lose the initiative.

"He played better than me," said Murray afterwards. "There's not a whole lot more to it. He had a chance to win the first set; didn't take it. I had a

chance to win the second set; didn't take it. I just struggled from then on." And asked why he fell away in the closing stages, the world number four added: "I was disappointed that I was struggling physically. I tried to find a way to come back. Didn't quite do it."

Wawrinka came into Sunday's match as a heavy underdog against the fourth seed, who was tipped by most to challenge for a first Grand Slam title over the next week. Wawrinka will play American 20th seed Sam Querrey in the last 16.

Team Sky quit Vuelta after team therapist dies from toxic infection "We wish all the other teams in the race well and will now take time to deal with this tragic news, “ said team principal Dave Brailsford. Team Sky has pulled out of the Vuelta a España following the death of Txema González. The popular and widelyrespected Team Sky soigneur-(massage therapist) died in hospital in Seville on Friday evening, at the age of 43. The withdrawal, announced by team principal Dave Brailsford, was taken by the team and supported by the family. The Vuelta organisers and UCI have been informed. Speaking for Team Sky, Brailsford said: "Txema's death is devastating to everyone in Team Sky. We've lost a good friend, a much respected and valued colleague. Our thoughts are with Txema's family. We have considered all the elements very carefully and this is the only decision we could take. It's the right one; to show respect to Txema and to look after our team. "We discussed it with Txema's family and they fully support our decision. They have asked us to the funeral next week and we will of course be there to support them and to pay our respects. Others - staff and riders - have been ill during this Tour and Juan Antonio Flecha pulled out on Friday.

where it looked like he might grab the stage win but was foiled by the barriers - as the road narrowed he had nowhere to go and finally freewheeled over the line in second place. Alessandro Petacchi won the stage into Orihuela.

Team Sky’s Txema Gonzalez

“The medical conditions are different but we need to take care of our team. The organisers of the Vuelta and the UCI have both been informed of our decision and we are deeply grateful for their cooperation and understanding.” Team Sky's Dr Steve Peters explained: "Txema contracted a bacterial infection which entered the bloodstream and developed into sepsis. "The toxins from this had damaged the organs in his body and he went into septic shock and unfortunately succumbed to that. I should also clarify that this bacterial infection has nothing to do with the viral infection which many of the

team have suffered with in Spain, causing stomach upset." Brailsford paid tribute to a hugely popular member of the Team Sky staff, adding: "Txema will be remembered as a warm-hearted colleague who was a joy to work with and was universally respected by our team and throughout the pro cycling scene. The team attended the start of stage eight in Villena on Saturday, where a minute's silence was held in respect for Gonzalez, before remaining in Spain for his funeral in Pamplona.” The race meanwhile has been continuing and HTC’s Mark Cavendish is in the green points jersey after a close finish on stage seven

Petacchi didn’t get any further in the race though having abandoned it on Sunday because of pains from a crash the day before which also involved Mark Cavendish. Petacchi will return home to La Spezia, Italy, where he is involved in a doping investigation. He faces a four-year to lifetime suspension because these charges, if verified, will count for his second doping offence. At the 2007 Giro d'Italia, he tested positive for excessive levels of asthma medication Salbutamol.

Pietersen fined after Rooney defiant Twitter outburst in sex Kevin Pietersen has been fined an undisclosed sum for a Twitter tirade which followed a decision to drop the England batsman from the one-day team. He used an expletive in an angry message in response to being omitted from the squad for the Twenty20 and 50-over series against Pakistan. The 30-year-old attended a disciplinary hearing at Lord's on Monday and pleaded guilty

to two unspecified charges. He also offered an "unreserved apology" to the England management team. The England and Wales Cricket Board will pass on Pietersen's fine to its nominated charities. "The hearing considered his comments to be

prejudicial to the interests of Team England and the England and Wales Cricket Board and a significant breach of the England player conditions of employment," read an ECB statement.

Pietersen's tweet, which appeared briefly prior to the official announcement of England's squad on August 31st, was, he claimed, intended for friends and he hastily deleted it after realising his mistake. "It wasn't meant for the

public domain," he said the following day. Pietersen was one of the stars of England's triumph at the World Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean earlier this year, but the selectors decided to give him a break from the international game after he admitted his confidence was low following the recent Tests against Pakistan. Since then, he has returned to county cricket with Surrey and hit 116 off 105 balls in a 40-over match against Sussex last weekend, his first century for 18 months. He is not the first player to fall foul of the game's authorities because of Twitter. Hampshire's Dimitri Mascarenhas was fined £1,000 by his county after a Twitter rant at England chairman of selectors Geoff Miller.

storm row

Wayne Rooney flies back to the UK today (Wednesday) amid reports that he is not planning to make any attempt to save his marriage following vice-girl allegations at the weekend. Rooney, 24, was in Basle last night with the England team, as they played their European Championship qualifier match against Sweden. It has been reported that while he has been with the squad his attitude has hardened - he believes that "boys will be boys" and that wife Coleen needs to "get over it". Prostitute Jennifer Thompson claimed in a kissand-tell in Sunday tabloids that the soccer star had paid her £1,200 a time for sex romps they had while the England striker's wife was pregnant. On one occasion, it has been claimed, another girl was present and the media are now waiting for

her - and possibly other girls - to come forward with their stories. The Rooneys had planned to go to a family christening at the weekend but pulled out. And Coleen discovered the news while having her hair done for the occasion - her husband texted her to tell her about the stories while she was in a hairdressing salon. Coleen picked up 10-monthold son Kai, left the family's £4.5 million Cheshire mansion and fled to the security of her parents' home after the sex storm broke. The house in Formby has been under siege and her grim faced parents have not commented. Wayne has been in trouble before when he admitted visiting a Liverpool brothel in 2004. Coleen forgave him and the couple have since carefully crafted their wholesome, family image, earning millions in the

process. His key sponsors, Nike, Coca Cola and EU Sports, had pledged their support but that was before latest reports that the star is not inclined to take criticism from Coleen or her family. Now his multi-million pound sponsorship deals may be at risk while advertisers and marketing men assess the damage. Yesterday Coleen had still not revealed what the future now holds for the couple although friends have been quoted as saying that she may not stay with the star. And other reports suggested she has already told Rooney that she does not need him. Coleen, "style ambassador" for Littlewoods, has built her own fashion-based career and is worth £8 million in her own right. Rooney earns £100,000 a week with Manchester United and Brand Rooney, built around the couple, is worth around £33 million.

Jimenez claims the European Masters

The Owls in trouble League One side Sheffield Wednesday could be forced into administration in the next 24 hours unless they pay a tax bill of £1.1m. Sources close to the club confirmed to BBC Radio Sheffield that last-minute talks are continuing with their bank. However there are real fears that fresh money will not be made available to pay off the debt.

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez held off the challenge of his Italian Ryder Cup team-mate Edoardo Molinari to win the European Masters by three strokes, and boost Monty’s hopes for the Ryder Cup. Leading by three shots overnight, Jimenez carded a 67, 21 under par overall, dropping one shot on the par-five 14th. An eagle on the 15th brought Molinari to within a shot of the lead but a bogey on the next slowed his momentum. Molinari's 67 left him 18 under while his 17-year-old compatriot Matteo Manassero (68) was third

on 16 under. As a result of his performance in the tournament - only his sixth as a professional Manassero has become the youngest player to secure a playing card on the European Tour. The performances of Jimenez and Molinari were a boost for European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, who now

has five players who have won events since the start of August at his disposal for the Celtic Manor showdown with the United States. Ross Fisher won the Irish Open, Martin Kaymer was victorious in the USPGA Championship, Peter Hanson claimed the Czech Open and Molinari took last week's Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

It could easily have been Molinari celebrating his second victory in successive events. At Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland, Jimenez was six shots clear, with seven holes to play, but saw his lead dwindle to one as Molinari birdied the 12th and 14th and then eagled the 516-yard 15th, thanks to a superb six iron to within two feet of the hole,

as Jimenez bogeyed the 14th. A Jimenez birdie and Molinari bogey on the 16th re-established a gap between the two that Molinari could not close.Jimenez, 46, becomes the eighth oldest winner in European Tour history and the first to record three victories this season. Incredibly, 11 of his 18 titles have come since he turned 40.

Wozniacki beats Maria Sharapova Top seed Caroline Wozniacki won an enthralling contest of big-hitting against Maria Sharapova to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open. Wozniacki, 20, gave her title-winning credentials a major boost with a 6-3 6-4 victory over the 2006 champion. The Dane found the power that many doubted she possessed to beat Sharapova for the first time.
