What a visit...!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
last weekend I was in the uK visiting friends. The weather on Saturday was great – grey, overcast, drizzly – just what I needed after the heat here over the last few months. We went to Salisbury in Wiltshire on Thursday - and apart from the cathedral that dominates the views as you enter the city, it has many quaint streets and different shops. They still have the global retailers like everywhere else but we managed to spend hours wandering around the antiques markets, oneoff boutiques and of course, resting our feet in the coffee and cake shops. My friend Janine owns an hotel in Alum chine, dorset, so we went along to Bournemouth on Friday. Bournemouth has a few unusual shops but is mostly dominated by places like debenhams, Beales, M&S etc. However, it is on the seaside and they have their beautiful Winter Gardens to wander through where you can feed the squirrels. Saturday morning saw us up and out and going along the coast to a market town called Bridport. I have been visiting Bridport offand-on since I was 18-years-old and nothing much has changed. We had breakfast in the Electric Palace – an old cinema that has been preserved - and the town has an antiques flea market each week all along the streets. Martin, Jan's husband, calls it “cake Heaven”(aka diet Hell!) and there are so many lovely cake shops there I can well see why. It's very much a country town with people wandering around in wellies accompanied by their border collies. Phew – what I need now is a rest!
The same agent had categorically denied a report to that effect published by El Mundo newspaper over the weekend but a photo printed by The Sun on Monday showing the actress with a suspiciously rounded belly seems to have convinced her to come clean. Cruz married
her long-time partner, Javier Bardem, just a few weeks back at a secret ceremony in the Bahamas and denied that she was pregnant at the time. The confirmation was made as Cruz travelled to London to finish filming the latest “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
Two hired killers arrested Judge authorised to go to Iraq The General Judiciary Council has authorised National Court judge Santiago Pedraz (above) to travel to Iraq to continue his investigation into the death of TV cameraman José Cousa. Cousa was killed when US soldiers opened fire on the hotel where he was staying in Baghdad in April
2003. Judge Pedraz has been trying to arrest the three American soldiers involved ever since but the US government has said Cousa's death was an accident of war. During his visit, probably in October, the judge will inspect the hotel room where the cameraman died and interview witnesses.

The police have already verified that Pollo, 36, had altered his fingerprints. Ronco, 44, had committed bigamy by marrying a Spanish woman to obtain Spanish nationality.
For the first time suicides in Spain outnumbered road deaths – by 3,421 to 3,021 according to statistics for 2008. A spokesman for the Association for the Research and Prevention of Suicide said that many professionals are working with drivers to reduce road deaths but “absolutely nothing is being done to prevent suicides”. He said the number of suicides was probably higher than the figures published by the National Institute of Statistics in March this year “because some people who want to kill themselves do so by provoking a fatal road accident”. Three times more men than women commit suicide and a quarter of those who commit suicide are young men under the age of 25. According to the World Health Organisation, someone commits suicide somewhere in the world every 40 seconds.

They said it makes employers reluctant to hire permanent staff and encourages the use of temporary contracts that have few benefits and rights. Another change is a cut in severance pay for workers on full-time staff contracts, which currently gives 45 days pay for each year worked. That would
drop to 33 days. Public Works minister José Blanco said the move was "positive for all workers, for those that have jobs as well as those who are trying to find them". But the unions do not agree and have called a general strike for September 29th. Support for the strike was lukewarm but seems to

Leaders of pro-ETA group arrested The Guardia Civil arrested nine people suspected of leading Ekin, a support group for the Basque terrorist group ETA, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Seven were arrested in the Basque Country and Navarre, and the other two in the Valencia and Cantabria regions. Ekin was created in 1999 "to take charge of stirring up public unrest and street
violence” and is suspected of acting as an organiser, distributing and ensuring compliance with ETA's instructions. It appears to be separate from Batasuna, the outlawed Basque party
accused by the government of being ETA's political wing. Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said hours after the arrests that they completely destroyed Ekin's leadership
structure. It was the first operation carried out against ETA sympathisers since the terrorist group pledged no to use violence in a truce that has convinced no-one. On Monday, a Madrid
court sentenced one of ETA's former military chiefs, Gorka Palacios Aldai, to 83 years in prison for killing a police officer in a 2001 attack in the capital.

Franco crimes remedied
ETA mediator: “Latest truce not enough”
Brian Currin
South African lawyer Brian Currin, who took part in the Northern Ireland peace process, admitted during an interview with El Pais newspaper that the Basque terrorist group ETA’s offer not to commit bomb attacks fell short of the request for a total truce made by a group of international peace negotiators. Mr Currin and a group which included Archbishop Tutu of South Africa and former Irish President and UN Human Rights Commissioner Mary Robinson have been pressing ETA to declare a truce for the past five months.
Mr Currin said the offer to suspend violent actions – made in a video released through the BBC – was at least a step in the right direction. Mr Currin is currently advising the banned Batasuna Party. Batasuna
was banned in 2003 because it refused to condemn ETA violence as set out in the Political Parties law. Mr Currin said the government was not giving sufficient importance to Batasuna's recent appeal

to ETA to give up violence and join the democratic political mainstream. Interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba has said getting the ban lifted on Batasuna was quite simple. He told a press conference last
week: “All Batasuna has to do is break all ties to ETA and the party will be welcomed back into the political fold.” He also said the government would have no dealing with ETA until it laid down its arms in a process that could be monitored and verified.
In response to Argentina’s request to re-open the investigation into the crimes committed by the Franco regime, justice minister Francisco Caamaño said last week that to a large extent, Spain had repaired the harm done by Franco during the Civil War and the dictatorship. He said thousands of people had been compensated for the loss of loved ones, thousands were receiving special pensions and many who had been executed after summary trials had had their names cleared. He acknowledged that though much had been done to right wrongs there was still more to be done.

The Endesa electricity company has lost €4.3 million so far this year as a result of 272 thefts of copper cable – up from 130 for the whole of last year. A spokesman blamed the rise on the price of copper, up from €3,500 a ton in 2008 to the current price of €5,700. He said scrap yards were paying between €1,200 to €3,200 a ton, depending on how clean the metal was. He added that due to rising demand for copper in China,

Former PM says legalise drugs Former prime minister Felipe González has said he believes the only solution to the drug problem is to legalise them. Speaking at a reception at the Mexican embassy in Madrid, he said one option would be to hold an international conference on the issue, although he recognised it would be difficult to organise. He told Ambassador Jorge Zermeño that drug trafficking was not just a problem in Mexico, where
nearly 30,000 people have been killed in the war against drugs in the past four years, but was “one of the most serious threats against security throughout the world”. He recalled that the violence which marked Prohibition in the United States in the 1930s ended when alcohol became legal again. However, he said it
would be dangerous for individual countries to legalise drugs: “It would have to be an international agreement that all countries complied with.”. Sr Gonzalez was a guest at the reception to mark the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence from Spain.

Six months in jail by mistake
Guardia officers in “gag” protest.
Government gets tough over protest The government has forbidden a protest planned by the Guardia Civil unions for September 18th in Madrid to demand professional and work improvements and equal pay with the National Police. The Guardia have been staging actions like the socalled “pens down” strike this summer when they turned a blind eye to many infractions committed by drivers on the country's roads to protest against the 5% cut in salary decreed by the government for public sector workers. Some 40 Guardia also staged a small protest in Madrid last week. In an attempt to defuse
the situation, Interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba has announced shorter working hours and less weekend work for the Guardia.
Spokesman disciplined The director general of the Police and Guardia Civil, Francisco Javier Velzquez, has ordered disciplinary action to be taken against Alberto Moya, the spokesman for the Unified Association of Guardia Civil (AUGC) and Francisco Garcia, his counterpart in the Officers' Union (UO), who at a press conference last week accused the government of treating the Guardia “like ETA
terrorists”. A spokesman for the Guardia Civil said an instructor would be appointed to decide if the two men had committed a “serious” or “very serious” misdemeanour, punishable by one to three months' suspension.
DAVID’S
Flavio Emilitin Silva was unlucky that his name was very similar to that of another fellow countryman from Guinea-Bissau who was serving time in Almeria for receiving stolen goods and who had escaped during a weekend pass - it cost him time in jail for an offence he did not commit. He told the police in Bilbao who bundled him into the paddy wagon one day in August two years ago and the judge who remanded him in custody that they were making a mistake, but Flavio spent 173 days in jail before anyone realised he was telling the truth. The mistake came to light when the authorities finally acceded to his request to compare his fingerprints with those of the escaped prisoner. Sr Silva is now suing the authorities for €175,000 in compensation.

Cuba to cut one million jobs The Cuban labour federation has announced radical plans to lay off more than a million state employees – half of them by March next year – to help revive the communist country's struggling economy. The people affected will be encouraged to become self-employed or join new private enterprises. It is the biggest private sector shift since the 1959 revolution. President Raul Castro outlined the changes in a speech in August, when he
said: "We have to end forever the notion that Cuba is the only country in the world where you can live without working." Cuba's communist government currently controls almost all aspects of the country's economy and employs about 85% of
the official workforce, which is put at 5.1 million people. The governing Communist Party has indicated that strict rules limiting private enterprise will be relaxed and many more licenses will be issued allowing people to
Belgian Church to support abuse victims The new head of Belgium's Catholic Church, Archbishop AndreJoseph Leonard, has pledged to focus on the victims of alleged sexual abuse in a first attempt to rebuild public trust. At a news conference in Brussels earlier on Monday, he said that although the Church would not be able to offer immediate solutions, it would set up a victims' support centre. An independent commission said abuse had occurred in every diocese over decades and that some victims were as young as two years old. The level, extent and duration of abuse revealed last week shocked even members of
the commission set up by the Church to investigate the allegations. It found that abuse, cases of which totalled some 300, had occurred at the hands of priests, teachers, lay workers and, in at least one case, a bishop. In response to accusations in the Belgian media that the Church had tried to hide the extent of the abuse, the commission said last week that it had
found no indication of a systematic cover-up. Twothirds of victims were boys, but 100 girls also suffered. Some 13 have committed suicide as a result. Many alleged victims came forward to testify to the commission after the Bishop of Bruges, Roger Vangheluwe, resigned this year, admitting to having sexually abused a boy before and after becoming a bishop.

Le Monde to sue Sarkozy's office One of France's most respected newspapers, Le Monde, plans to file a lawsuit accusing the office of President Nicolas Sarkozy of spying on its journalists. The paper said the government was annoyed by the story it ran in July naming Labour Minister Eric Woerth in connection with an investigation into the finances of France's richest woman, L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, and used the intelligence service to identify one of its sources. The authorities are investigating whether she
made illegal donations to Mr Sarkozy's election campaign in 2007. The president's office said it had "never given a single instruction" to investigate Le Monde's sources. This is the latest twist in a scandal which began as a family feud between Liliane Bettencourt and her daughter, but has mushroomed into a series of investigations into political donations, suspected tax evasion and money laundering.

Proeuthanasia TV ad cut The Australian government has outlawed a TV advert in favour of euthanasia, which is illegal in Australia. In the advert, a gaunt-looking actor speaks of intolerable suffering and urges the government to listen to those who wish to die with dignity. The group behind the campaign, Exit International, said it would fight for its reinstatement. In 1996, the Northern Territory government introduced the world's first voluntary euthanasia law, which was overturned by federal authorities in Canberra eight months later. A spokesman for Exit International said it was time to restart the debate with a new generation of Australians.

his 30-year-old remains, raising concerns that the welfare system is being exploited by dishonest relatives. According to official records, he had received about 9.5m yen (£70,000) in pension payments since his wife's death six years ago, and
some of the money had been withdrawn. His relatives have been accused of fraudulently receiving his pension for decades. Meanwhile, officials found that hundreds of the missing would be at least
150 years old if still alive. The Justice Ministry said some of those unaccounted for may have died as long ago as World War II, possibly during the post-war turmoil. Others may have emigrated without reporting their status to local authorities,
or relatives simply had not reported the deaths. Japan has one of the world's fastest ageing societies, with one in five over the age of 65. Last year's Health Ministry report said Japan had 40,399 people aged 100 or older with known addresses.

An Iraqi soldier stands guard in front of Al-Rusafa detention facility in Baghdad
Briton held without trial in Iraq A British man is among 30,000 detainees, according to an Amnesty International report. Ramze Shihab Ahmed, 68, a dual UK-Iraqi national, was imprisoned in December 2009. His wife said that while in detention he had suffered electric shocks to his genitals and suffocation by plastic bag, and she called on the government to increase its efforts to secure his release or push for a fair trial. Mr Ahmed and his wife escaped from Iraq several years ago. Mr Ahmed was part of a failed 1992 plot to oust Saddam Hussain. He was arrested last year after returning to Iraq in an attempt to free his detained son Omar. His whereabouts were unknown until March when he was able to make a short phone call to his wife
in London. Amnesty said the use of torture to extract confessions in Iraq was routine, and that such confessions were frequently used as evidence in court. It also claimed that several detainees had died while in prison, apparently as the result of torture or illtreatment. Amnesty is appealing to Foreign Secretary William Hague and asking him to increase pressure upon the Iraqi authorities to intervene in Mr Ahmed's case. The Foreign Office said they were granted access to Mr Ahmed in April and that
he is now being visited on a regular basis. Amnesty said a 10,000 of the 30,000 detainees being held without trial in Iraq had been recently transferred from US custody, following the end of US combat operations in the country. The US handed over control of the last remaining military-run detention facility to the Iraqi authorities in July but Amnesty said it did so without proper assurances that prisoners' rights would be respected.
Woman admits hiding four births Bernadette Quirk, 55, who kept the bodies of three stillborn children hidden in a bin in her wardrobe for up to 20 years and buriedanotherinacemetery, hasbeenwarnedshecouldbejailed. Quirk gave birth to the babies between 1985 and 1995, Liverpool Crown Court heard. She will be sentenced in October. Her defence barrister told the court that the births happened during a difficult time in her life when she was drinking heavily. He told the court that Quirk had struggled to recall details of exactly when the births took place and that although she could not remember the fourth baby at all, she had "little option
but to plead guilty" because of the overwhelming evidence that she was the mother. He said there was medical evidence that the children were stillborn when she gave birth to them. When Quirk was arrested last year, she was being treated at Whiston Hospital on Merseyside for depression and was on the verge of being evicted from her home. No explanation was given as to why she kept
the remains, moving home several times since the babies were born. It had been established that two of the babies in the bin were twins and all four were girls. Judge Henry Globe adjourned the hearing for reports because, he said, "There is a background here that I need to understand". Quirk's relatives now plan to give the four babies a proper burial.

Blair receives medal and dismisses plagiarism claim Former US president Bill Clinton on Monday gave Tony Blair the Liberty Medal, one of the highest private honours in the US, for his role in the Northern Ireland peace process. The National Constitution Centre, which awards the medal, is an independent, non-profit organisation that promotes understanding of the US constitution and its relevance. Recipients of the Liberty Medal receive $100,000. The Centre's president, David Eisner said: "There is always an element of controversy when you pick people at the forefront of change. We understand how differently Tony Blair
appears to be viewed by many people in the UK as compared with many people in the US." On tour to promote his new book, Mr Blair has attracted hostile protests from British and Irish antiwar protesters angered at his role in supporting the USled war in Iraq. Past US honourees include Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court justice, and former US presidents Jimmy Carter, George Bush
Sr, Bill Clinton, director Steven Spielberg, singer Bono and DNA pioneers James Watson and Francis Crick. Earlier, during a radio interview, Mr Blair laughed at a suggestion that he had plagiarised an account of his first audience with the Queen, using words very similar to those used in the 2006 Oscar-winning film The Queen. In his memoirs Mr Blair recalls the Queen telling him: "You are my tenth
prime minister. The first was Winston. That was before you were born." Scriptwriter Peter Morgan has suggested Mr Blair had had "one gin and tonic too many and confused the scene in the film with what had actually happened". Mr Blair said he had never seen the film. He said he had told the story many times because he thinks it is quite a funny story, adding he couldn't believe that they would have written the movie without talking to somebody.

Lover myth challenged A survey by the Institute for Public Opinion has found that more than three-quarters of Gallic couples have bad sex lives, with more than one in three women using excuses such as headaches, tiredness or children being nearby to get out of having sex. Nearly one in six men said they had also made similar excuses. The pharmaceutical corporation which commissioned the survey plans to launch an information campaign this month for couples who want to improve their sex lives. SOUTH KOREA
Aid for flooded North Korea The South Korean government has said it will send 5,000 tons of rice, 10,000 tons of cement and three million packs of instant noodles and other aid to North Korea within a month. The announcement came just hours after the publication of a report indicating the North sank a South Korean warship in March this year. Two days earlier, North Korea proposed holding new reunions for families divided by the partitioning of the Korean peninsula, indicating a thaw in relations between the two neighbours.
£550,000 broadband quote drops to £100
One of the UK's leading cannabis researchers has called on policymakers to consider allowing the licensed sale of the drug for recreational use. During a speech at the British Science Association festival in Birmingham on Tuesday, Professor Roger Pertwee said radical solutions had to be considered because he believed the current policy of criminalising cannabis was ineffective. Pop songs and sports anthems have been banned from Catholic funerals which “should be sacred rites rather than secular celebrations”, the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dennis Hart, has said. A recent study showed a football club anthem, Frank Sinatra's My Way and Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World are the most popular funeral songs in Melbourne. Funeral directors said the ban was insensitive to the needs of grieving relatives who wanted a service to include photographs, videos and the dead person's favourite music.

Villagers who were told they would have to pay £550,000 for broadband have now been told the link could cost as little as £100. BT said the large sum was needed for the infrastructure for the connection to Erbistock near Wrexham. But after the villagers received a £50,000 estimate from another firm, BT said it could cut costs by moving
villagers to a nearer exchange. However, they are planning to cover the £50,000 cost of the Rutland Telecom scheme with the Welsh Assembly Government's broadband support scheme, which provides up to £1,000 per household or business premises to help with the set-up and installation costs. Erbistock residents are planning to pool this money.
Fortune made from selling sperm illegally Ricky Gage, 49, and NigelWoodforth, 43, from Reading, allegedly made about £250,000 byillegallymakingspermavailableovertheinternet,SouthwarkCrownCourthasheard. They operated Fertility 1st, which made sperm available from anonymous donors, without a licence. They have denied two counts of procuring sperm illegally under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, brought in to ensure that both donors and women wanting to conceive had access to information and
counselling, and to help protect against the risks of diseases including HIV. The men argue that their company was simply an information site which acted as an introduction database, meaning they were not procuring or making sperm available. In the first case of its kind, jurors were told that the website, which was run from the basement of Mr
Woodforth's home, brought together women who wanted to conceive and men who wanted to donate sperm. Clients were allowed to choose the ethnicity, height, hair colour and even hobbies of the sperm donor they wanted to use. The prosecution said the women paid an £80 joining fee and £300 to use the service before being given access to

Regional News Quiet drain of immigrants 'worrying' Every day an immigrant packs up and leaves Andalucia, which has the second largest “immigrant drain” after Madrid. And this figure only refers to immigrants who have opted for the voluntary programme to return home. The “padron” figures of local councils show that some 5,000 others have left, mainly South Americans. About the only positive aspect of this drain, according to Andalucia's Permanent Migrations Observatory (OPAM) is that it reduces pressure on the job market.
The downside is that Andalucia is losing the money – taxes, social security payments and spending on food, household goods and entertainment. It also reduces the region's social and cultural diversity. The situation is particularly hard for skilled and professional immigrants who have lived here for several years.
In their countries of origin, salaries and standards of living are much lower than in Spain. As a result, a growing number are casting their eyes towards Africa and other developing parts of the world where their skills and experiences are more valued. As one Peruvian told a local newspaper: “Sarkozy needn't kick us out, we're leaving Europe voluntarily.”

Malaga a magnet for millionaires The economic crisis may be hitting the average man and woman in the street hard, but the very rich are finding Malaga more and more attractive. Official figures show there are 440,000 millionaires – that is, rich but not superrich – in Spain, of whom some 10,000, and rising, live in Malaga – a third in the capital itself and the rest spread along the coast and not just in Marbella's Golden Mile. After Marbella, Fuengirola, Velez-Malaga and
Estepona attract the most millionaires. The urbanisations with the most millionaires per square metre are Sierra Blanca and Los Monteros in Marbella, El Madroñal and La Zagaleta in Benahavis, Guadalmina Baja in San Pedro de Alcanatara, and Casasola and La Boladilla Alta in
Estepona. They think nothing of forking out €20 million for a villa as long as it has heated floors, inside and outside pools, sweeping views, large garages and state-of-theart security systems. Their average meal costs at least €130 and some think nothing of spending €2,100 on a bottle of Petrus '98.

Sarkozy visit rumoured The owner of the Villa Padierna Hotel, Ricardo Arranz, told a reporter from a local newspaper on Tuesday that a visit by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni, was “just a rumour”. However, he did not deny that the couple were planning to celebrate their wedding anniversary with some close friends at his establishment later this month or the first week in October. The hotel hit the international headlines in early August, when US First Lady Michelle Obama
spent a few days there with her daughter Sasha and a group of close friends. The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila, also spent a few days at the hotel later that month. The Obama visit seems to have put Marbella back on the
jet set map. Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria sponsored a charity gala benefit at the hotel – which Mrs Obama did not attend – while Julio Iglesias made an honest woman of his long-time partner Miranda Rijnsburger at a church in Las Chapas in Marbella.

2nd runway ready next year
Debts weighing heavy on councils
Malaga airport's second runway will be opened towards the end of next year, Spanish Airports Authority director Juan Ignacio Lema announced while attending the opening of the airport's new local train station last week.
The 101 municipal councils in Malaga province owed banks more than 1.1 million last year, up from 900,000 in 2008, according to Bank of Spain figures. And that was only part of the total amount of the debt, a spokesman said, because the social security payments and taxes owed by the municipalities had yet to be taken into account.
He said putting the Fuengirola–Malaga train station underground had freed up an area that had a capacity for 27 grounded airlines. He said that since the new terminal opened in March air traffic had
increased by nearly 9%. with 6.5 million passengers passing through. Renfe president Teofilo Serrano, who also attended the opening, said the new underground station reduced the time necessary to deliver travellers to the AVE high speed station in the centre of Malaga. He also reported that recent improvements to the Malaga–Pizarra local line had already doubled the number of passengers using it.
Plaza Mayor to close bar area The company which manages the Plaza Mayor commercial centre has decided to eliminate the Plaza Brava bar and discotheque area and turn it into a shopping area. A company spokesman said
the idea was to strengthen the mercantile activity and eliminate the drunken brawls, drug use and thefts which have increased in recent years. Malaga City Council has approved the plan.
Local councils have been struggling since the construction boom collapsed and have still to find other sources of income to replace the lost revenue from building licences. To add to the problem, 83 councils have to return 54 million to the central government because they received more subsidies than they were entitled to. With local elections on the horizon, many mayors will lose their seats if they cannot come up with financing for new projects to please voters.

The Junta de Andalucia's health department spent €3,8 million on campaigns aimed at minimising the impact of swine flu on the region's population, plus another €13 million on vaccines. After comparing the relevant figures, the department found that swine flu affected about the same number of people who had ordinary flu – but was much more
expensive. In response to the campaign, some 80,000 people requested more information while some 277,000 people – around 20% of the at-risk
population – had the vaccination. A department spokesman said that more than a million vaccines – which cost €7 each – were not used.

Family businesses find ways to survive About three quarters of businesses in Andalucia belong to families who find themselves in a sticky position when faced with a decision to lay off staff – all of whom are related. The director of Andalucia's Association of Family Businesses, Mario Carranza, said the majority had found a way round the problem by agreeing to work shorter hours for less pay. However, he said he expected many of these businesses to be absorbed by bigger companies. “The average owner is 70 years old and has dedicated his whole life to the business, something his children are not prepared to do,” he said. “The young generation wants to introduce expensive technological improvements to make the business more competitive but can't do so because of the economic crisis, so they'll probably end up selling out in the end.”

Muriel Pilkington
Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Inevitable dictatorship
Derailing a Spanish firm
W
ith 20-20 hindsight, we can now see that whichever side had won the Civil War, there would have been a dictatorship. You only have to look at the politically correct Left of today and the constant efforts to put us all in straight jackets to understand that.
T
he current myth is that if the Republicans had won, they would have automatically ushered in paradise on earth. But how can paradise be built on so much blood shed in anger at centuries of injustice and class hatred, especially the latter. Too many people today know little about the years that led up to the war so they are under the impression that Franco and his fellow generals simply got up one day and decided to overturn the Second Republic.
I
n fact, political assassinations had become a daily occurrence in the months before the war as Right and Left tried to get the upper hand. The leftwing of the Socialist Party, the anarchists and the communists wanted a revolution while the moderate Socialists and other Republicans wanted far-reaching reforms. On the Right – the very rich landowners and industrialists, the Church and the backward-looking elements in the military – were determined to stop the revolution. It got to the point where what both sides called a bloodletting was not only inevitable but necessary.
A
nother myth that must be dispelled is that the Republicans acted and fought like gentlemen. When news of the military uprising spread, selfappointed Republican militias took it upon themselves to get rid of the “class enemies” – priests, businessmen, landowners, schoolteachers or anyone else belonging to the bourgeoisie. Here in Coin, 83 such people were executed by these militias. Then along came the Nationalist forces to do their own bit of social cleansing. The 160 people they executed were all known members of “undesirable” political parties – socialists, communists, anarchists – or trade unionists plus a few others who were suspected of sympathising with the Republic. This scenario was repeated throughout the country, and with a vengeance here in Andalucia, where the masses had suffered grinding poverty for centuries thanks to a totally unfair distribution of land.
O
ne of the reasons given for the time it took for Franco to win the war is that he was held up by this social cleansing. In fact, Franco was convinced that the only way to save Spain was to get rid of the “rojos” (Reds). If they survived the war, it would mean endless trouble for him in the future.
W
hat today’s Left refuses to acknowledge is that something similar was happening on the other side, as George Orwell described in
“Homage to Catalonia” and Arturo Barea in the trilogy “The Forging of a Rebel” they were just two of several authors who witnessed Republican atrocities.
A
nd no-one could know better than Juan Negrin, the last president of the Second Republic. Towards the end of the war, Negrin realised it would be impossible to unite the two major political forces on the Republican side – the Socialists and the Communists. He openly admitted that the Popular Front – the alliance of the left-wing parties that was in power when the war started in July 1936 – was torn by inter-party struggles and believed that the Socialist Party would be absorbed by the Communist Party at the end of the war. He told a meeting of the Republican government on December 10th, 1938, that what was needed was “an organisation that would unify all that is best in all of the parties and organisations” which would be a fundamental support of the future Republican government. He then stated quite categorically that “there is no returning to the old parliamentarian system – it will be impossible to allow the ‘free play’ of parties as it existed earlier, because in this case the Right might once again force its way into power. This means that either a unified political organisation or a military dictatorship is necessary.” (The Battle for Spain, Antony Beevor, pg 412.)
A
t that time, Negrin was very much under the influence of the Soviet advisers sent by Stalin to protect his “investment” (in arms) in the war so it would be logical to assume that if the Republic had won, it would have installed a Soviet-style government. Any remaining Franco sympathisers would have been “mopped up” – something the Russians were very good at – and the estimated half a million who chose exile at the end of the war would have been Francoists not Republicans. Franco would have fled the country while the going was good – as did most of the members of the Republican government – and would probably have found refuge in Germany or Italy or even Morocco. But he won and we’ll start looking at what he did – and not what they say he did – next week.
W
hen President Obama announced last year that billions of dollars would be available through the job-stimulus Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Spanish firms were quick to seek business in the United States, especially those with infrastructure and energy efficiency expertise. It was a great opportunity for Spain to showcase its cutting-edge technology in the rail and wind turbine industries. But last Wednesday, US transportation officials dealt a serious blow to one of these companies – Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) of Beasain, Guipúzcoa – when it announced that it had uncovered serious violations in the contract it signed with Houston’s transit authority. Early last year, CAF signed a $320 million offer to build 105 railcars for the city’s planned extension of its light rail system; a good chunk of the money was to be paid with federal funds. The Spanish firm had won the bid over its competitors, which included Siemans and Alstom Transport of Hornell , New York .
B
ut the Federal Transit Administration said that Houston officials violated federal procurement laws and the Buy America requirement when it awarded the railcar contracts to CAF. Following a four-month investigation the FTA determined in a 38page report released last week that the city’s transportation officials “did not allow for full and open competition” to other bidders, and gave CAF the opportunity “to continue revising its price” while denying other bidders the chance “to present their best and final offers.” The inquiry was opened after the FTA suspected that the city was trying to skirt the Buy America clause, which is an important component of Obama’s job stimulus law. Products and materials used in these publicly funded infrastructure projects must be made or assembled in the USA. Houston transit asked for a waiver to allow CAF to build the two initial prototype railcars in Guipúzcoa but the FTA denied the request. Despite the rejection of the waiver, the city gave the go ahead to CAF to build the railcars in Spain, according to the FTA inquiry. The US government’s investigation was expanded to look into the procurement process after some losing bidders complained to the FTA that it was flawed.
“
The results of the investigation are both alarming and disturbing,” wrote FTA administrator Peter Rogoff in a letter to Houston last Wednesday. “They reveal a series of systematic efforts through which [the city’s transit officials] and CAF sought to bypass numerous federal rules.” Rogoff demanded that the city cancel the CAF contracts immediately and re-issue the bid if Houston wanted to continue to receive federal funding. CAF has remained quiet on the issue, but a lawyer representing the company in the United States told The Houston Chronicle that the firm would appeal the FTA ruling and suggested that it could take city officials to court for rescinding the contracts. CAF has already received between $40,000 and $50,000 in initial payments, according to some reports.
T
his episode has raised a real stink in Houston. The head of the local transit agency responsible for negotiating the contract, Frank Wilson, is no longer on board. He resigned in May when a criminal investigation commenced over allegations that he misused taxpayer money to take a female employee on a trip to, yes, Spain. Wilson travelled to Bilbao, Seville and Madrid in March 2009 after the contract was signed to conduct further negotiations. “It is unclear why a visit to CAF’s rail car manufacturing facility was needed after the procurement had concluded, especially since [Houston transit] staff had visited the facility in November 2007 during Step-1 of the procurement,” the FTA report states.
O
ther than a possible lawsuit from CAF, it isn’t clear whether there would be further legal repercussions stemming from the FTA inquiry. Houston city officials have said they will comply with the federal government’s demand and cancel the CAF contract even if it means postponing its light rail expansion by a few years.
T
here isn’t anything surprising about a private company wanting to find the easiest way to do business with a public entity. Contract negotiations are always complex and involve a lot of sometimes questionable give-and-takes. In this case, however, the US government found out, derailed the offer, and exposed how far some companies and public officials will go to win business.

Peter Cossons Alhaurin el Grande The Editor says: We have had letters recently from readers anxious about problems they are encountering as they try to sell their country properties because many mortgage companies are insisting on a licence of first occupation. Inland estate agent Peter Cossons this week sheds some light on this murky issue. Following recent letters regarding selling properties in the countryside in Coin I would like to comment from an estate agents point of view. It is true that selling a property in the Campo is becoming increasingly difficult, it is not just the banks who are insisting on the Licence of First Occupation (LFO); if the buyers’ lawyer is not familiar with country property then even cash buyers can be put off buying because their lawyer insists that the property should have the LFO. We are only in this situation because corrupt Town Hall officials in various municipalities along the coast started to turn a blind eye towards building developments on land that wasn’t designated as urban; a direct breach of the PGOU approved by the Junta de Andalucia. Consequently these illegal developments were never granted their LFO and the banks have used this as their reasoning behind their insistence that ALL properties should have an LFO. This is fine
with coastal developments but completely irrelevant when it comes to buying in the countryside. As your reader on August 11th correctly mentioned, in the absence of an LFO the banks want the town hall to provide a certificate to state that there are no outstanding issues with the property (Certificado de Inexistencia de Expediente Sancionador). It is also true that the town hall in Coin is flatly refusing to provide these certificates. It seems that due to recent high profile court cases against town hall officials, no one is willing to sign anything. They do not want to provide this certificate because legally any property which has been legalised and registered by passing of time (more than 4 years) through a certificate of antiquity, does not require an LFO. So as almost all of the properties built in the countryside fall into this category - providing they have been correctly registered (another story)- then the LFO is not legally necessary. It is not all doom and gloom though; we recently sold a property in Coin to a Spanish buyer from this area; as with most Spanish buyers they didn’t use a lawyer, they know how the system works so they carried out their own legal checks. When they discovered that the property did not have the LFO they went to the town hall to apply for the certificate. They were told that there are
definitely no outstanding issues with the property, however the council was not going to put it in writing. The buyers were happy with this and proceeded with the purchase. I am not suggesting that buyers shouldn’t use a lawyer; they definitely should, but go for someone local, a lawyer who is prepared to go to the local town hall to make the necessary enquiries. It has been nearly 3 years since I first came across this problem, we have sold lots of rural properties since then and so far there has only been one sale that appears not to be going ahead as a direct result of this issue. What is vitally important now for vendors is to ensure that your property is fully and properly registered at the land registry so that your escritura and nota simple reflect everything that you have built including the swimming pool, outbuildings as well as the main dwelling. Providing this is the case there are banks that will offer mortgages on rural properties. Peter Cossons is a founding member of Ideal Country Property, a registered real estate agency based in Alhaurin el Grande; they have been inspected twice by the Junta de Andalucia and met with their approval on both occasions. He has been involved in the local property business since 1999.

“To Insure or not to Insure - that is the question” !!! If you are a Clairvoyant, a Crystal Ball gazer or even a Nostradamus you will be able to see into the future and will be forewarned of an impending catastrophe. For the rest of us, the future is the big unknown and therefore we need to make provision to protect ourselves against any event which could cause financial ruin. Insurance is a complicated subject and requires specialist knowledge in order to ensure that you have the correct cover for your particular circumstances. If you are not such an expert, you need to contact Pierre Bedding at Prestige Insurance Consultants. With 40 years experience in the Financial Services/Insurance
industry (35 years as an independent advisor - 8 of which have been on the Costa del Sol) Pierre is more than qualified to give you sound advice. He will analyse your needs and offer you the best product(s) to ensure that you have the correct insurance cover. You will be informed of the pros and also the “cons” in order that you will have all the facts before effecting an insurance policy. Although the cost of insurance is an important factor - especially during the current economic downturn it should not be the sole deciding factor in taking out a policy. There is no point in paying for a cheap policy if your claim is not going to be settled.
Although Pierre has a fully equipped office at his home in Coin he mainly sees his clients at either their home, place of work or over a cup of coffee at a local Venta. Pierre is registered with the Dirección General de Seguros as an exclusive agent for Ibex Insurance and Generali Seguros. He is also a member of the British Chartered Insurance Institute. e Clash Of e Titans I love all the old Greek myths and legends about Gods and heroes. It’s fascinating how the stories developed to explain the constellations. Jason and the Argonauts’ ship the Argo can be seen in the stars of the Southern hemisphere. Hercules, along with Gemini the twins, also joined Jason to find the Golden Fleece - Aries the Ram, and are all up there. Almost all of the 88 constellations have some sort of a myth attached to them to explain why they are in the sky. Do you remember a movie from the 1980s that was remade last year called Clash of the Titans? It is about the Greek warrior Perseus riding on the back of the flying horse Pegasus and rescuing the fair maiden Andromeda from the Kraken sea monster. He had to cut off the head of the Gorgon Medusa who had snakes instead of hair growing from her head. All good stuff! Well, if you go outside at this time of the year and look directly above you at the stars you will be able to see all the major characters from Clash of the Titans shown in constellation format. First, look high up toward the North East at around 11.00pm and find a group of 5 stars that form a sort of zigzag or W on its side, this is Cassiopeia, the mother of Andromeda. Just below Cassiopeia is a fairly faint group of stars that are creating an almost bow and arrow shape, this is Perseus. Directly overhead is a large square shape of four stars with an extra star jutting out from the upper most corner of the square, this is the Square of
Pegasus and is meant to represent the flying horse, and trailing from the left hand bottom star of Pegasus toward Perseus is Andromeda herself, waiting to be rescued by her hero. This is a particularly interesting part of the sky for anyone with binoculars, as the constellations lie along the plane of our Milky Way and it is very rich in stars. Half way between Cassiopeia and the brightest star of Perseus is a very lovely double cluster of stars that are best seen through binoculars. Each cluster contains thousands of stars all grouped very closely together. Try sweeping your binoculars all around the bright star in the centre of Perseus and you will find a myriad of stars. Now move your binoculars along the length of Andromeda towards the Square of Pegasus and you should come across a faint smudge, this is the Andromeda galaxy it’s a galaxy very similar in shape and size to our own and contains over 600 billion stars. It’s an incredible distance of 2.5 million light years away! I’ve put a star chart onto the website showing exactly how they should look. The next meeting of the Astronomy Society will be on Thursday September 23rd at the El Coto bar and restaurant beginning at 8.00pm.

Community Ahoy there! Sailors help out Cudeca was delighted last Wednesday to receive 15 US Navy Sailors and Chiefs, led by Chaplain Trofort, from USS The Sullivans, an Arleigh Burke class destroyer of the U.S. Navy on its way home to Florida after seven months at sea. When in port, the sailors like to keep up with COMREL (Community Relations Project). This involves helping with community services, and on this occasion Cudeca was the grateful recipient. As always, Cudeca were impressed with their military efficiency and in just a few hours they had
The current President, Sue McCleary, wishes to ‘set the record straight’ regarding these rumours and recent information reported in some English and Spanish newspapers. contributions, which is all that keep the charity going, greatly reduced. However Sue, her committee of volunteers and the staff at the shelter, together with many loyal supporters, have worked, and continue to work, extremely hard to ensure that the money is available to cover the costs associated with all the animals in their care – currently 46 dogs and 150 cats. At an EGM held on 21 August the P.A.D. members approved the sale of the land which houses the cattery. The land is being purchased , for the sum of 45,000 euros, by a long term and extremely generous supporter of P.A.D. who is in no way related to Chantal Lancelot, the manager of the cattery, as was incorrectly reported in the press recently. The land and its facilities will then be leased back to P.A.D. at a nominal rent of 1 euro per month. Whilst it may seem that the receipt of this money will ‘solve’ the charity’s current economic difficulties it most certainly will not. The

Sydney and his wife, Frances (seated) marked the occasion with a gathering of members of the Coin RBL Branch Committee. intention of the committee is to invest the majority of the sum for use in emergency situations only – such as the appalling floods experienced last winter. Money still needs to be raised to cover the 10,000 euros per month running costs. What the transfer of ownership will provide is the security of the site and its facilities for the foreseeable future. Sue said, “It would appear that some people, who have supported P.A.D. in the past have made decisions to withdraw their support based on misinformation and certainly not based on facts. This is sad and frustrating for all of us who continue to devote so much time and effort to the charity. Our sole aim is to care for and re-home abandoned cats and dogs and too much time has been wasted in recent months having to defend unwarranted attacks from various quarters. We need support not criticism. “Our work with the animals currently in our care and with future animals that

A musical success A concert in aid of Cudeca was recently held in Marbella, starring the baritone Marco Vassalli and pianist Stephan Lutermann. The performance included works by Franz Schubert, Vincenzo Bellini, Francesco Tosti, Richard Strauss, Ruggiero Leoncavallo, and Mozart.
The evening, set within the gardens of the Clínica Buchinger, was enjoyed by all and thanks to donations from the public attending the event raised €1.072,40 – preventing the possibility of the Hospice having to close by the end of the year. The friendship and collaboration of the Clinic,

Emergency measures Traffic Accidents
Poisoning
A traffic accident is probably the most common cause of serious injury to a cat or dog. Always approach the animal with caution, it may react aggressively because of the pain. Move the dog as little as possible, but if you must move it, it is probably best to use a blanket, sliding it underneath the dog. Seek the assistance of another person and lift the dog gently to safety. Check for heartbeat and any haemorrhaging. Attempt to stem excessive bleeding by holding a clean pad or clean handkerchief over the wound, binding it tightly with a makeshift bandage. Call the nearest vet's surgery to warn of your arrival.
Signs of poisoning may include collapse, muscular twitching, vomiting, bleeding or convulsion. Do not hesitate to contact the vet. Take some of the noxious substance to the vet with you if you know what it is. If the dog has recently swallowed the poison, try to make it vomit. Salt and mustard in water will usually work quickly, or a small piece of washing soda (sodium carbonate) pushed down the throat.
Burns The only recommended first aid is to clean off the offending substance and immerse the body part under cold running water for as long as possible. Seek professional advice immediately.
Heat Stroke This occurs most commonly when a dog has been left alone on a hot day without ventilation. If your dog has not already collapsed it may be panting, vomiting or frothing at the mouth. Remove froth and lower the dog's temperature as soon as possible by placing or dousing the animal in cold water. Take the dog to the vet immediately where it will be treated with drugs and more cold water.
Drowning It is a popular misconception that all dogs can swim, but this is not always the case. You must attempt to empty the dog's lungs of water as soon as possible. Place the dog's head lower than its body, open its mouth and begin to pump the chest by pressing down on the ribs and releasing the pressure immediately. Repeat at fivesecond intervals.
Choking Sometimes a piece of stick, bone or small rubber ball may get stuck in a dog's throat. Your dog may be unable to breath as a result and swift action is necessary. Open the dog's mouth carefully and see if you can see the object. Pumping the chest, as in the case of drowning (see above) may dislodge the foreign body. Get your dog to the vet as soon as possible where the object can be removed under anaesthetic.

La Rioja - where new temples to wine meet history... Spain is synonymous with sun, sea and sand but it's famous too for its wine, produced in vineyards all around the country. Written by Andrea MacLean
Y
ou don't need to be a wine expert to want to spend time wandering around a winery and vineyard, and each region of Spain has a different style of wine on offer.
O
ne of the most famous of these is La Rioja, just one and a half hours south of Bilbao. Rolling the word Rioja around the mouth is enough to stimulate the need to reach immediately for a corkscrew. It is one of the oldest wine making regions, and combines tradition with some achingly modern architectural design as the famous families that own the bodegas step up their activities to attract tourists.
L
a Rioja may be the second smallest region in Spain but it's rich in natural resources, has an important historical heritage and its capital, Logroño, is on the route for pilgrims to Santiago de Compestela. There is a wealth of ancient monuments, perfectly preserved medieval villages and spectacularly beautiful scenery. Each year the region produces 175 million bottles - enough to make it a household name - and 13 per cent goes to Britain, the largest export market. It is produced in more than 500 bodegas many offer a guided tour and the chance to sample the goods. The best known names are probably Marqués de Murrieta, Marqués de Riscal and Marqués de Griñon.
Y
ou'll need a car to make the best of a trip here and it is an easy drive from Southern Spain. Make your base at Logroño, or the pretty walled town of Laguardia or head to Haro, where many bodegas are found just outside the town. Haro is the centre of production in La Rioja Alta and is an elegant, medieval town which boasts an ancient city wall. It's also home to one of Spain's famous fiestas, the Batalla del Vino (Battle of The Wine) on St Pedro's Day each June 29th.Everyone dresses up in white outfits with jaunty red scarves, and after a church service everyone merrily chucks red wine over each other until there is nothing white left to be seen.
Apparently it's something to do with a dispute over land going back to the 10th century.
although at first blush it looks like a ship from outer space has landed in the middle of a vineyard.
T
T
here are plenty of traditional wineries to visit but in recent years new temples have been built by some of the oldest family names, calling on the services of some of the world's leading contemporary architects, like Santiago Calatrava, the man behind the Bodegas Ysios winery, or Frank Gehry, who designed the now iconic "Ciudad del Vino" for the Marqués de Riscal family in Elciego. The gold, silver and dusky pink colours of the titanium panels that sweepingly form the roof of the hotel were designed to reflect the colours of grapes and bottle foils,

If you want to stay you will need to save up the pennies because the exquisitely different exterior is reflected by luxury within and it doesn't come cheap...especially if you find yourself in the Frank Gehry Suite, where specialist technical knowledge is needed just to turn off the state-ofthe-art TV.
F
rom the hotel terraces you can see the tiny medieval village nestling on the other side of the road. Walk over and catch glimpses of the sci-fi
building at the end of sleepy narrow village streets but there is no discord in the viewcuriously, both sit comfortably relaxed in each other's presence.

As well as the many established artists living in the area there are even more of us who would like to be involved in the arts. A new organisation, Axarquia Art, has been created to provide a focal point for professional artists, budding artists, art collectors, gallery owners and the viewing public. The organisation aims to promote and develop art at all levels throughout the Axarquia region. To fulfil this aim the group has two types of membership (both free of charge), Associate Membership, open to all, and Artist Member, accessed through a selection process. The two main shows put on by the group are the Spring Show, in April, and the Summer Exhibition in August. The Spring Show is open to all members and is the opportunity for budding artists to show their work to a wider audience, while the Summer Exhibition is the showcase event for the group and open to all those who hold Artist Member status. Group events and
meetings are open to all members and offer opportunities to share ideas, participate in workshops, see demonstrations by the artist members, and develop their personal skills. Through these events it is hoped that more members will gain in confidence and skill and want to move on to become Artist Members. Associate members who do not produce artwork themselves are kept informed of the group activities, exhibitions, and workshops through Email updates and are always welcome at meetings and events as interested parties. Should you wish to join the group or want more details please contact their website at www.axarquiaart.blogspot.c om or by Email at www.axarquiaart@gmail.com

Throw in a few of those terribly bad acts, those absolute shockers that the X Factor is famous for mixed with a talented rising star or two like the excellent new girl Cher Lloyd and it all makes for a lot of fun, with plenty to talk about and enjoy. Fans of the Friday Curry Night should note that for Friday 24th only, the restaurant is closed for a private party so the popular Curry Night will be on the Saturday along with of course the X Factor in the

f you were an alien, learning about the human race from the comfort of your arm chair whilst watching Hollywood blockbusters, you would get a very skewed view of what our lives are really like. Obviously there are timing restrictions in your average movie which prevent characters from waiting on the phone for thirty minutes to get Telefonica to reconnect their ADSL or from spending fifteen minutes on their hands and knees getting the limescale off the shower doors but apart from the time issues, movies are about escapism and storytelling and noone really wants to see “real life” when they sit down to watch a film.
MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Going the Distance BY NANETTE BURSTEIN Starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long Barrymore plays Erin, a 31year-old who is a bit long in the tooth to head off to New York for a summer internship at a leading newspaper, while Long is Garrett, who works for a struggling record label and has a patchy record with relationships. So it's no shock to discover that he
has just split from his latest girlfriend and is out on the town with his mates drowning his sorrows when, guess what, he bumps in Erin. She may be 31 and a girl but she is an ace video game player and that impresses the hell out of Garrett, who decides she is the one for him.
But once summer is over and Erin flies back to San Francisco the big question is how do they maintain a long-distance relationship? In the world of technology YouTube clips lend a hand - but will love be enough? Barrymore and Long have their own real-life
on/off relationship and there is an easy going rapport between the two of them that ramps up the charm quotient in this amusing rom-com. Deep it ain't but there are some laughs and a high likeability factor.

Sofia takes Italian crown
Mendes in movie blow
Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere" has scooped the best movie award at the Venice Film Festival. The Italian-American film director, daughter of Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather), has been féted by the Italians since her arrival and the film has had a fantastic reception in the media. Which might explain why it will have its
worldwide opening in Italy. In it Stephen Dorff plays troubled Italian-American actor Johnny Marco, who is succumbing to a life of drugs and debauchery. But when he has to take responsibility for his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning) from a broken marriage, his life is turned around as he redeems himself and grows into a better person.
British director Sam Mendes will want to put 2010 behind him. Not only did he split from actress wife Kate Winslett but his professional career has been under strain. His latest movie, based on the Ian McEwan novel "On Chesil Beach", has been put on hold after claims that its producers have got cold feet after the director's last three films performed less than brightly at the box office. Shooting had been expected to start next month but now looks like being held over until next year. Mendes had been due to work on the next outing for Daniel Craig's Bond, but that has been
postponed indefinitely because of the financial difficulties that have overwhelmed Hollywood studio MGM.

O
n the other hand, it is accepted movie protocol that people rarely finish any meal they buy in a restaurant, they never lock their cars as they walk away from them and the oddest practice of all, they never say goodbye when hanging up a call. In fact, the list of things they don’t do in movies is quite extensive, especially when compared to the few exceptions where every day activities are featured as part of a story, like going to the toilet or watching television.
A
few films have acknowledged everyone’s basic need to visit the toilet from time to time, normally to comic effect, saving everyone’s blushes from having the action hero from nipping to the loo before jumping out of a plane. While it is difficult to imagine Bat Man or Indiana Jones stopping for a quick pee, it seems it’s ok for the likes of Tom Hanks in Forest Gump or Jim Carrey in Me Myself and Irene to use this basic act to raise a laugh.
I
t’s very easy to make a long list of ‘things that happen in movies that never happen in real life’, like running away from a scary place to an even scarier one while wearing just underwear (assuming character is female and in her late teens), or dramatically departing this mortal coil after muttering
most but not quite all of a really important message, clue, address, safety deposit box number or Swiss bank account. And while we are on the subject of safety deposit boxes, how many people have them in movies? Almost everyone!
I
f you’re unfortunate enough to get fired in a movie, or brassy enough to hand in your notice, you’ll normally be given the chance to walk among your work colleagues holding your important personal effects and a pile of papers, while everyone either looks away pointedly or cheers you on, fearless for their own jobs, depending of course on the plot. No-one in the movies spends the next three weeks making multiple visits to the unemployment office trying to squeeze a benefit or two from the clutches of the social security system.
U
nrealistic movie conventions also state that cars can be driven for days without the need to refuel, only to run out just as the heroes are about to be captured. In movies, detectives generally solve crimes after they have been taken off the case, any building can be entered via the air conditioning system (unless there is an underground maintenance tunnel) and everyone looks gorgeous first thing in the morning. Anyone on the run in a movie will always be picked up on the local news channel and then another character will find them in a bar and shout "Turn up the TV, they're talking about you” As the volume comes up, the story in question will be just starting.
W
e all see and recognise these clichés but without them plots would be more clumsy and less enjoyable and yet they rarely cross over into our real lives. Maybe the aliens are pondering why they are nearly always portrayed as green, multi-limbed and well versed in American. Just imagine if they adopted that styling as a way of being recognised for what they are when they finally make contact. Alien life imitating art – Cool!

This is a passionate week for you when the object of your desire receives much attention. Emotions are stirring in the depths and the past may revisit you in some way, reminding you of a time long ago. When it comes to business do not act with haste but with caution, you will be tempted to rush around and change things based on your emotions, however, when taking the time to be objective, a greater picture may present itself and reveal more opportunities. You will find yourself landing in unfamiliar territory that makes you feel slightly out of your depth in some areas of your life. There is an inner drive that is fuelling you to take on new challenges and explore horizons that once upon a time you would have never considered. Creativity and passionate pursuits draw you and you will go that extra mile to make sure that you improve these areas. Love and your desire to make it work propel you forward. Are you prepared to take a risk? You have looked for the solution through a myriad of books and information sites but cannot find a logical solution; the only way to get over this hurdle is to take that calculated risk you have been avoiding. Only when you do this will you realise that perhaps you have been worrying over something that is actually fine. Spend more time relaxing instead and you will find that certain things just end up fixing themselves. Prepare yourself for a pleasant surprise, you think you know what all your options are but in truth you are not aware of half of the possibilities that are coming your way. It is your ability to calm the stormy seas this week that will have you in demand, your communication skills are second to none and others may be looking to you to save the day. Your generosity of spirit infuses others with a sense of wellbeing and happiness – you are very much in demand right now. You have an incredible opportunity to build bridges and lay a foundation for peaceful relationships. Sometimes we can get so caught up in our own moods that we misjudge situations according to our own expectations – perhaps this has happened in the past and now you are being given an opening to ‘bury the hatchet’. By counting on yourself and doing your duty you find an enormous sense of security and comfort that you haven’t felt for a while. A new beginning puts you totally in charge of an important area of your life. Events move like quicksilver and you match that speed to make the most of the changes that are now occurring. Contacts and acquaintances are flocking in that will help you to network and spread your wings and over the next few weeks your social life will be buzzing. As mercury changes direction and moves forward again this becomes a very positive time for you.

Two weeks ago we looked at how to go about getting an appointment for your car to be tested for its ITV - the Spanish MOT. Once at the testing centre you join the inevitable queue to pay. To find out who is before you in the queue, as people are not always standing in order, ask "¿Quién es el ultimo?” “Who is the last person in line?” Someone will say "Soy yo." “ It's me." Then you know your turn is after them. After paying you wait for your car to be called. Normally the make of the car will be called first followed by the registration number. So, you might hear "Ford, BA 9654 QU”. Make sure you know what your registration number sounds like in Spanish. Once you get to the actual test, here are some words which may be useful. Los frenos - the brakes Freno de mano - hand brake Delante - front De atrás - back Arranca - switch on the engine Apaga - switch off the engine Para - stop El intermitente de la derecha - the right indicator El intermitente de la izquierda - the left indicator Las limpiaparabrisas - windscreen wipers El cinturón de seguridad - seat belt And mucha suerte - lots of luck. Cost of ageing population needs re-calculating
Beauty Tip
Some causes of memory loss
The cost of old age on health services in industrialised nations may need to be re-measured because rising life expectancies and improved health means the population is ageing more slowly and the burden may not be as dramatic as feared. Scientists from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria, Stony Brook University in the United States and the Vienna Institute of Demography have proposed a new way of measuring ageing which is not reliant on fixed chronological ages and will help calculate the cost
of old age and retirement more accurately. They said the current method of measuring ageing has been based on misleading information from indicators which are used worldwide to determine health care and retirement costs. They are based on chronological age and in many instances consider
people as being old when they reach age 65 or even earlier. Traditionally the oldage dependency ratio, OADR (the number of people aged over 65 to people of working age), was used to assess the burden to the society of supporting elderly people.
Cockroaches could be useful Far from being a health hazard, cockroaches could in fact be a rich source of antibiotics that can kill bugs like MRSA, according to researchers at Nottingham University. In a study of locust and cockroach brains, they discovered nine different chemicals which all had anti-microbrial properties strong enough to kill 90% of MRSA (Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus) while not harming human cells. Cockroaches thrive in dirty environments, the
researchers said, and these chemicals defend their nervous systems against micro-organisms. The researchers said they could become a powerful new weapon to treat infections like E. Coli and MRSA which are becoming increasingly resistant to some of the
most powerful antibiotics available to medicine. However, the researchers said the compound of chemicals would need years of testing for safety and efficacy before any drugs developed from them could go on the market.
952 960 372 630 700 201
The increase of that ratio was considered to reflect the growing burden of the ageing population on the pensions system. But the scientists said this measure is now out of date because people live longer and someone at age 65 is not an old person any more. Most health care costs occur in the last few
years of life and these years happen at ever later ages as life expectancies increase. A spokesman for Age UK said the study clearly showed that viewing older people simply as a “'burden to society” is an out-of-date concept.
Vitamin B may stave off Alzheimer's A new study by the Oxford Project to investigate Memory and Ageing (Optima) suggests high doses of B vitamins may halve the rate of brain shrinkage, one of the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment, which often leads to dementia. The Optima researchers looked at 168 elderly people experiencing levels of mental decline known as mild cognitive impairment. This condition, marked by mild memory lapses and language problems, is beyond what can be explained by normal ageing and can be a precursor to Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Half of the volunteers were given a daily tablet containing levels of the B vitamins
folate, B6 and B12 well above the recommended daily amount. The other half were given a placebo. The team measured the rate at which their brains had shrunk two years later and found that on average, brain shrinkage slowed by 30% in those taking vitamin supplements. In some cases it slowed by more than 50%, making their brain atrophy no worse than that of people without cognitive impairment. B vitamins are found naturally in many foods, including meat, fish, eggs and green vegetables. The UK's Food Standards Agency has warned taking more than 200 milligrams a day of vitamin B6 can lead to a loss of feeling in the arms and legs, but these symptoms are reversible once someone stops taking the supplements. It said that taking 2mg or less of vitamin B12 supplements a day is unlikely to cause harm, but that there is not enough evidence to know what the effects of taking more than that would be.
Many things can cause memory loss, not just dementia, so watch out for the following before jumping to all the wrong conclusions: STRESS Studies have shown that people under pressure who continuously have high levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood perform less well in memory tests, but even severe short term stress can cause memory loss. Make time for yourself to do what helps you to relax - exercise, a relaxing bath, yoga, or doing some gardening. PROBLEMS SLEEPING Lack of sleep and poor quality sleep are both associated with memory loss. Sleep is needed for effective memory storage and retrieval. Sleep problems are usually caused by lifestyle, rather than a sleep disorder. Establish a sleep routine, and avoid food and drink (especially alcohol) which help keep you awake or interrupt your sleep pattern. VITAMIN DEFICIENCY Vitamin B12 is essential for the production of red blood cells and for a healthy nervous system. Anaemia symptoms include tiredness, shortness of breath and dizziness. Nervous system symptoms include tingling in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, memory loss and confusion. Your GP can prescribe vitamin B12 injections. Good sources of vitamin B12 are red and white meat, eggs, fish, milk and cheese. Vegans can take supplements. THYROID DISORDER Memory difficulties combined with general fatigue and sluggishness can be a sign of an underactive thyroid caused by low levels of hormones from the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism can occur at any age, but is more common in older adults and women. Other symptoms include cold hands and feet, constipation, pale, dry skin and unexplained weight gain. Your GP can perform a blood test and prescribe hormone tablets if necessary.

Anton’s army of fans on the march
Oh dear, Anton Du Beke clung onto his job at Strictly Come Dancing after last season´s racism row when he made thoughtless remarks about then partner Laila Rouas. And as the line-up for the new series was unveiled on BBC at the weekend bets are already being taken on an early departure for the suave star after it was revealed that his new partner is formidable former MP Ann Widdecombe - 20
years older, a good foot shorter and apparently carrying most of the weight she lost on Celebrity Fit Club. Anton´s army of fans wasted no time in blitzing the BBC switchboard, and many claimed that the debonair

Princess a one-time leftist claims book A controversial book about Spain´s future queen is splitting opinion in the country and has lifted the lid on the tense relationship between members of the Royal Family. The book, "A Republican in the Court of King Juan Carlos 1", by Isidre Cunill, says Princess Letizia, wife of Crown Prince Felipe, is an "authoritarian" and "despotic" figure, known as La Jefa by staff in the Royal Palace, and disliked by the King. And it is claimed that she is a former leftist with antimonarchist views who used to make fun of the Crown Prince as well as calling the King a womaniser. Leading Spanish newspaper El Mundo says the book is part of a plot to blacken the princess's name. Letizia, 37, married Felipe in 2004 and the couple have two daughters.
It is said that the recent health scare affecting the King, who is 72 and had a tumour removed from his lung, has helped focus attention on the succession. The book contains some startling claims, and the palace has denied that an intelligence report was ordered on Letizia before her marriage, which said she had undergone an abortion in Mexico City in 1995. The book also says that the King and Queen had forced Felipe to end his previous relationship with a Norwegian lingerie model and that Felipe warned his father that he would renounce the throne if his

XBOX APOLOGISES OVER 'GAY' SUSPENSION
Microsoft has apologised to a town in America after suspending one of its residents from Xbox Live. Twenty-six-year-old Josh Moore was banned because officials said he'd broken Xbox's code of conduct by saying he lives in Fort Gay, West
Virginia - a name branded offensive by the company. Despite his contacting Microsoft and the enforcement team at Xbox Live to reassure them that it was a real place they refused to check its validity. Josh said: "At first I thought, 'Wow,
somebody's thinking I live in the gayest town in West Virginia or something'." The contract for Xbox Live players says users cannot "create a gamertag, avatar or use text in other profile fields that may offend other members".
GOOGLE “INSTANT”
Google Instant promises live search results Google has sped up its internet search engine by launching a product called Instant that displays results as soon as users type in queries. The service predicts a user's query and modifies the displayed results as more letters are typed into the search box. The company described it as "search at the speed of thought". Previously Google suggested search terms and did not reveal results until the "enter" key was hit
or the "search" button was clicked. In a demo event held at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, Marissa Mayer, Google's vicepresident of search products and user experience, typed "sfm" into the search box to demonstrate the new service. As she typed, results
appeared instantly for "SF MOMA" the first predicted search result. In another demo, when the letter "w" was entered, a list of links offering the "weather" appeared along with images showing the temperature. "We're actually predicting what query you are likely to do and we're
giving you results for that," said Ms Mayer. Google estimates that the typical user spends nine seconds entering a query and 15 seconds looking for answers. The company says Google Instant could shave between two and five seconds off a typical web search.

New Google mobile maps New Streetview for mobile phones joins walking directions in update for Google mobile maps. Google has underlined its commitment to its Android platform with an update to Mobile Maps that improves the features of its Streetview service and also adds walking directions. Version 4.5 of Maps addresses issues in previous releases that had meant users struggled to position their photographic view of a street precisely where they wanted it. In the new version, users can press on the Google Streetview icon, which the company calls “Pegman”, and by moving it around they can choose a precise area of the picture to look at. The company describes the system as using a grey onscreen “pancake” to allow users to identify which view they would like.

Bond creator’s car up for grabs Ian Fleming's AC is up for auction at the Goodwood Revival this Friday. The James Bond creator bought the 1962 Aceca brand-new for £2,000 in the same year he wrote The Spy Who Loved Me, specifying the rare Raymond Mays-converted Ford 2.6 engine, and now the estimate is £100k-£130k. It wasn’t that long ago you could get one for 15 grand, how times have changed.

A great weekend for Alonso and Ferrari Councils under fire for Fernando Alonso arrived at Ferrari’s home race under extreme pressure from sectors of the media and even loyal fans. Add to this the fact that Ferrari haven't had a win on home soil since 2006 and you have a recipe for disaster. Alonso had other ideas - first he went on to deliver pole position and then a fine, hard fought, victory brought home in the best manner possible. He recovered from a bad start to slot behind the much hyped rear wing of Jenson Button’s McLaren Mercedes who managed to out drag the Ferrari into turn one and from then on keep the two Ferraris at bay until the first tyre stops late in the race. Alonso put in two fast laps when McLaren broadcast over team radio that Button was heading in for his stop. Then the Ferrari pit crew delivered a great tyre change. On lap 38 Alonso emerged from the pitlane, side by side with the McLaren into turn one and edged into the lead where he stayed to the very end, sending the crowd at Monza delirious - they haven't had much to shout about for a while. The Spaniard is the new hero of the tifosi and his

victory ignited wild celebrations and a spectacular track invasion at Monza, no doubt across Italy there were Ferrari flags fluttering and around the world Ferrari fans celebrating. Forza Ferrari! Bravo Fernando! Alonso’s victory will engrave his name permanently in the heart of the tifosi. Winning the Italian Grand Prix is almost as important as the world championship title for the Maranello squad. Speaking after one of his finest moments Alonso said: “It compares to the feeling I had when I won the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona in 2006 – both
are very special moments. It was a very tough race with very strong opposition. A fantastic drive by Jenson. After the start it was difficult but the team did a fantastic job – it is thanks to them that I am sitting here because I made the overtake in the garage.” Button was runner-up after leading most of the race despite losing a section of wing end-plate and diffuser panel early on. In the end he trailed by 2.9 seconds, but managed to keep Felipe Massa at bay. The Brazilian made it doubly sweet for Ferrari to be on the podium at Monza after a race which saw him stay in touch with Alonso and shadow Button all the

way to the line. Fourth place and probably the drive of the day went to Sebastian Vettel who dropped a position at the start, suffered what appeared to be engine problems midway through the race, was down to eighth at one stage, made his regulatory pit stop on the very last lap of the race still came back out in front of a hard chasing Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber, to take a well deserved fourth place. Hulkenberg enjoyed his best race so far this season, despite some pretty severe corner cutting at the chicanes that went unpunished, to take seventh place.

`dim´ plans on lights GEM Motoring assist has warned councils not to turn off street lighting as several local authorities begin trials aimed at saving cash by dimming street lights or cutting them completely. The scheme is designed to cut down on CO2 emissions and energy costs and would see street lights dimmed or turned off during the early hours of the morning.
more danger and significantly compromise road safety.”
Buckinghamshire County Council claims that it makes savings of £700,000 a year, while Essex County Council says it saves over £1m a year by switching off some street lights at night. Both councils say the savings are made without endangering motorists, cyclists or pedestrians. But breakdown and safety organisation have warned that switching off road lights is dangerous.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the AA have voiced concern in the past regarding the loss of street lights at night. The Department for Transport and Highways Agency has previously run trials on switching off motorway lighting at quiet periods, generally between midnight and 5am. The option of dimming street lights can save councils 50 per cent on lighting bills, according to the Institution of Lighting Engineers. Street lights are calxculated to cost around 15p a night to power.
"With winter drawing nearer, it is even more important that visibility is aided wherever possible, not reduced," said GEM’s Chief Executive, David Williams MBE."I understand there is a need to cut down on carbon emissions, but to dim or turn off street lights, bollards and signs in the hours of darkness is dangerous and not advisable. Further decreasing lighting on roads will put road users in even

Hatton enters rehab after drug claims Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has consulted a rehabilitation specialist following newspaper allegations that he used cocaine. His spokesman Max Clifford told the Press Association that Hatton has been suffering from severe stress. "Ricky's father has already been talking to the specialists over the last few weeks," Clifford said. "He and others have been increasingly concerned about Ricky's depression and his drinking." If true it will be a very sad end to a great career.
Malaga win in goal fest! Real Zaragoza 3 - Malaga CF 5
Malaga players Fernando and Juanmi celebrate another goal
Following the break for internationals Malaga travelled to Zaragoza looking for their first points of the season.
Greg Henderson celebrates a great victory for Team Sky on stage 2
Kiwi's spell in yellow cut short by Albasini Greg Henderson won stage two of the Tour of Britain to jump into the overall lead after a dominant display from Team Sky, but it was short lived, as on stage 3 Michael Albasini (HTC) broke away on the final climb to take the stage. The New Zealander outsprinted his breakaway companions at the end of the 160.5 kilometres stage around Stoke-on-Trent, with teammates Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas both doing huge turns on the front to tee up Henderson who finished it off in style. Michael Albasini (HTC-Columbia) finished second and Heinrich Haussler (Cervélo) third while Wiggins and Thomas came home 14th and 15th respectively. It was an outstanding display from Team Sky and puts them in a strong position for the remainder of the race as the peloton crossed the line fully 10:40 behind. That all means Henderson leads the general classification by 14 seconds from Albasini, Haussler and Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) and the Kiwi also heads the points jersey standings. "I had a fantastic team with me, they rode the front for me right the way through to the line," said a delighted Henderson afterwards. "I knew the finish from a couple of years ago so I waited and waited for as long as possible. No one had come with 300 metres
to go so I just jumped as hard as I could knowing that I could open up a gap and I just held that to the line. It’s a nice treat to be in the yellow jersey and we'll have a go at defending it now." For the only time this year, the team will also be wearing a unique Sky Rainforest Rescue kit in order to raise awareness about the partnership with Sky and WWF to help save a billion trees in north-west Brazil, hence the new green livery. Stage 3 Newtown-Swansea Henderson is down to second on the general classification, one minute and 26 seconds behind, after Michael Albasini battled to a hard-fought victory in Swansea to vault into the overall lead. The HTC-Columbia rider made his move on the final climb up Constitution Hill at the end of what proved a brutal and dramatic 149.7km trip from Newtown as the event returned to Wales for the first time since 2004. A chase group of eight riders, driven by Albasini, set about cutting back that
deficit and made the catch with 7km to go on the rainlashed and fog-bound route. That set up Albasini and the Swiss rider took full advantage on the final climb, a 300 metres one-infour cobbled drag up one of the steepest residential roads in the UK. He put daylight between himself and the rest by the top and held onto his advantage on the fast descent to the city centre, crossing the line eight seconds ahead of Ian Bibby (MotorpointMarshalls Pasta) and Stijn Neirynck (Topsport Vlaanderen). Henderson was in a group 1:27 back and drops to second overall, two seconds ahead of thirdplaced Richie Porte (Saxo Bank). Afterwards he tweeted: "Ouch. Couldn't follow leaders up that Black something climb. Chased like a mongrel but couldn't get ‘em back. Still up there on GC tho." Thomas and Wiggins remain in the top 15 on the GC while Team Sky are second behind Vacansoleil on the team classification. Report & Photo www.teamsky.com
It took Malaga 1 minute 34 seconds to make an impact, with good work from Coin boy Juanmi who crossed for Fernando to squeeze the ball in at a tight angle, leaving the Zaragoza keeper rooted to the spot. After two Zaragoza free kicks in quick succession were ably dealt with by new Malaga keeper Gallatto, Malaga broke forward again, Eliseu found Juanmi with a fantastic cross and the youngster finished with aplomb - two up after 7 minutes. A shocked Zaragoza came back with Gallatto making a great save from a free kick, touching it on to the post. With Zaragoza struggling to cope with
Malaga's pace, Malaga won another freekick on the 27th minute and Fernando headed in after Zargoza's keeper failed to collect the ball. Two minutes later Quincy set off on a great run starting in his own half ending up in the Zaragoza box to set up Juanmi to stroke into the net, two now for the local lad and 40 after half an hour Malaga were flying. On 34 minutes Quincy beat the offside trap to run in to score Malaga's 5th goal of the half. Edmilson of Zaragoza pulled one back on 40 minutes shooting from outside the box to give Zaragoza a glimmer of hope. Malaga looked comfortable at the start of the second half with Quincy again causing the Zaragoza defence
problems. After 62 minutes Gallatto saved brilliantly from a header, but was unable to stop Perez sliding the ball home on the 67th minute as Zaragoza sensed a comeback. Rondón and Juanmi both then missed chances to increase the lead and on 81 minutes Andar was left in too much space to fire home from the edge of the box to make it 5-3. Nerves jangled for the last 10 minutes with Zaragoza applying some heavy pressure but Malaga held on to claim all three points and only their second ever win at Zaragoza. Malaga’s next game is at home on Sunday evening where they entertain Sevilla in the massive Andalucian derby, kick off is at 9pm. Report: Scott Forbes
Watch out, Ronnie is getting excited Something new and exciting is coming to snooker - Power Snooker, which boasts innovative rules and will feature games lasting only 30 minutes, will see players battle for points instead of frames. Ronnie O'Sullivan is hoping the new game can help revive the sport. “This is the future of snooker and a few people have got to get their heads around it," O'Sullivan said. "Snooker needs a new audience. A game ending in 30 minutes is exciting." The inaugural tournament, which will take place at London's O2 Arena on October 30th, will see the world's top stars going headto-head. While Twenty20 has provided cricket with a new lease of life and younger audiences, O'Sullivan is excited about embracing the quick-fire format which will
include time restrictions for shots and bonus points for potting certain balls. "Anything new is a challenge," said the threetime world champion, who is also helping to promote a Rileys scheme to get more youngsters playing the game this summer. "I find the World Championship really boring. I've won it three times but 17 days in Sheffield is draining. People just want to pitch up and play. "It is the year 2010 and we are not stuck in the 1970s anymore. I can understand that people still like their long endurance games, but for me the excitement of playing a game that keeps you on your toes, keeps you on your edge, is something I am really looking forward to. It is going to change snooker. The crowd will love it and the public will enjoy it. I cannot
find a flaw in it. You just want some excitement in your life and this brings excitement." Main Power Snooker Rules Nine reds, instead of 15, in a diamond formation next to pink. Potting middle red triggers two-minute PowerPlay where pots count double. 20-second limit for shots with 20-point penalty for exceeding time. A break-off must see at least two reds hit a cushion Century breaks worth 50 bonus points. more info at www.powersnooker.com

Paul Casey misses Kaymer’s great out at the BMW year continues Championship He now has a lead of more than £415,000 over his nearest competitor Graeme McDowell in the race to Dubai
While Martin Kaymer was celebrating another win on the European tour Paul Casey was struggling over the closing holes of his final round at the PGA Tour's BMW Championship in Illinois to finish a shot behind winner Dustin Johnson. Casey dropped shots at 13, 14 and 15 and then saw Johnson birdie the 17th to edge ahead for victory. Johnson, who finished on nine under, had come close to major wins at both the US Open and the PGA Championship. Johnson, who moves up to a career-high 12th in the world, led by three at the US Open in June but then shot a final-round 82 to miss out on a first major win. And then in last month's USPGA at Whistling Straits he was one
in front with one to play, bogeyed and was controversially denied a play-off when given a twostroke penalty for grounding his club in what he thought was "a piece of dirt", but was deemed a bunker. Casey, who was left out of Europe's Ryder Cup team, was three clear after a superb opening 12 holes before losing his grip on the title. "I stumbled a little bit on the back nine, but congratulations to Dustin Johnson - he's gone through a lot," said Casey, who moves up from ninth to seventh in the world rankings, "It was myself against the golf course and I played it one shot worse than Dustin Johnson. That's the way I look at it - it helps me sleep at night."
Last weekend was a battle against the elements at the KLM Open, in the Netherlands, as heavy rain lashed down threatening to postpone Sunday’s tournament, but despite the extreme weather conditions, the rain held off for Germany’s Martin Kaymer who completed a superb week of golf to claim his third Tour title of the year. The German, who won his first Major at the 2010 US PGA Championship, was in tip top form from start to finish at the Hilversumsche Golf Club and he capped off his fine displays by triumphing by four strokes. He birdied the last two holes to complete a four-under 66 and a 10-under 200 total one stroke better than Swede Christian Nilsson and Paraguay’s Fabrizio Zanotti. "I felt very strong and I was very patient," said Kaymer. "The majors are the biggest tournaments we play all year and if you win one of those it gives you probably
the biggest confidence you can get." The British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and Jose Manuel Lara had applied the early pressure after they both shot 65. After a disappointing opening round 73, Oosthuizen gradually improved his performances and Sunday's final round saw him at his best. Two birdies on the front nine saw him hit the turn in 33, and despite a brief hiccup at the 10th, he picked up four more shots coming in to leave him tied for fourth with Lara. In other news, Corey Pavin’s recent decision to pick Tiger Woods for the American Ryder Cup Team was a bit like deciding whether to back the right horse at the Grand National. It seems there are no guarantees when it comes to the world's top golfer these days, and in five appearances for his country against Europe, Woods has been on the losing team on
Martin Kaymer with the KLM trophy his third this year
four occasions, but Pavin's selection might just pay off. He seems to have an encouraging balance between experience and youth, so we will have to wait

Cavendish at the double Mark Cavendish sealed a second stage in succession at the Tour of Spain, after a typical finishing burst won stage 13. The 25-year-old HTC-Columbia rider, leading the points competition in the race for the green jersey, edged beyond the pack at the end of a 196km run. It followed Thursday's triumph in the 21-stage tour that completed individual stage wins at all three grand tours.
Nadal’s career Grand Slam Rafael Nadal moved over halfway closer to Roger Federer’s 16 Grand Slam titles when he won the US Open on Monday, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 64, 6-2 at Flushing Meadow. He now has five French Open titles, two Wimbledons, one Australian Open and now one US Open. Thrilled with
the win and to have completed his career grand slam, Nadal said: "(Winning the US Open) is more than I dreamt, just to arrive at the final was amazing and to have the trophy in my hands in a few seconds with my heart beating is going to be unbelievable. "I played my best match

in the US Open at the most important moment, so I am very, very happy for that, for sure. To win in here I think is the more difficult tournament for me to play, more difficult conditions to adapt, to adjust my game on this court, for the balls, for the court, for everything. I am not a perfect player, so everybody can improve."
