Madrid primary Tomas Gomez, the relatively unknown general secretary of the Madrid branch of the Socialist Party, beat health minister Trinidad Jimenez in the primary held on October 3rd to select the

Socialist candidate to face Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre in next year's regional election. His win has been interpreted as a defeat for Prime Minister José Luis

Rodriguez Zapatero, who asked Gomez not to put his name forward because he wanted Sra Jimenez to be the candidate. Gomez insisted and it was agreed to hold a primary, a rare event in Spanish politics.

Back at work again this week. It's always a problem with holidays when you come back to an absolute mess and the boss is screaming at you for things that happened while you were away. What they think you could have done when you weren't even there is beyond me and they ought to think of it as a challenge to the rest of the team to see how they cope when a staff member isn't around – then they can do a bit more training where the system falls down. We used to have a boss that would constantly be on the phone – what a waste of time and it always put a damper on our holidays. I have to say that I have come back to no moans, no notes about problems and just a lot of smiles to see me back. The people I work with got on with their jobs, did what was needed and I am very proud of them indeed. Well done to all of them! My holiday was a bit of a weird one. We went to Toronto in canada and stay with my sister who I had never seen before. I was adopted as a baby and thus, I have a sister that I have now met but there is also a brother that I haven't met yet and another two half brothers somewhere (we think) in the newcastle area of the uK. Ancestry.com is going to be red hot and I'm only just learning how to use it – any pointers on using genealogy sites would be most appreciated!

Neo-nazi groups to be investigated The National Court has been quick to investigate anarchist and anti-system groups in the past but has refused systematically to investigate radical right-wing groups like the neo-Nazis. However, the High Court put an end to that this week when it instructed judge Ismael Moreno to investigate attacks by the neo-Nazi Falange and Tradition group on anti-

Fascist monuments and symbols in Navarre in the past two years. In one attack, the group destroyed several plaques honouring Franco's victims and defaced graves. On another

Strike boosts poll support for PP A poll taken after last week's general strike showed that if an election had been held then, the Partido Popular would win with a 14.5% advantage over the governing Socialist Party. The latter's support had dropped to just under the 30% - down from 34% in the last poll taken in June after prime minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced his budget cuts. These included a 5% cut in salaries for public

sector workers, which is what provoked last week's general strike. The strike was patchily observed – having more impact in Madrid and Barcelona, where the general public suffered

most from reduced public transport services. There were violent confrontations in Barcelona between police and youths who turned out to be squatters rather than sympathisers with the strike.

American citizen held for al-Qaeda funding link Police arrested a US citizen, Mohamed Omar Debhi, in Barcelona last week, on charges of sending more than €60,000 to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The police said Mr Debhi, who was born in Algeria, sent money to an Algerian who police named as Toufik Mizi. They said he had fled Spain some years ago when the authorities cracked a cell of al-Qaeda fund-raisers. Mr Debhi is believed to have once lived near Houston in Texas but US officials have not

commented on the arrest so far. He was was released provisionally two days after his arrest by Judge Santiago Pedraz who ruled that while “evidence of his participation in the deals existed”, it was not enough to “establish his criminal responsibility”. The al-Qaeda group in the Maghreb (AQIM) frequently kidnaps

Europeans travelling in the Sahara Desert regions of Mali, Niger, Algeria and Mauritania. Last month, it freed two Spanish aid workers who had been held for nine months. The group is still holding five French citizens snatched from a uranium mine in Niger two

Anniversary of women's right to vote On October 1st 1931, the Republican government changed the country's voting laws so that women over 23 could vote. During the final debate, the main mover behind the change, Clara Campoamor (pictured), had to deal with comments like “because of their hysterical temperament, women shouldn't be allowed to vote until they reach menopause”. As a result,

some MPs put forward a proposal to allow women over 45 to vote but Campoamor fought that idea tooth and nail until 161 MPs voted in favour of give the vote to women over 23, with 121 votes against. During the Franco dictatorship that followed

the Civil War, both men and women lost the right to vote – except in referendums to support Franco. The 1978 Constitution gave the right to vote to all men and women over the age of 21, which was later reduced to 18.

weeks ago. In July, AQIM had killed Michel Germaneau, a 78-year-old French hostage being held in Mali, after a crossborder raid involving French and Mauritanian troops failed to free him. AQIM also killed the British hostage Edwin Dyer last year after the UK government refused to give in to its demands.

FARC moneylaundering ring smashed Police have arrested 41 people in 13 cities across Spain who are suspected of laundering over €200 million to finance Colombia's FARC narcoguerrilla group. They also seized more than €150,000 in suitcases and cupboards during searches of 27 homes and offices. The investigation began two years ago when the police got a tip-off about an increase in unusually large transfers of money to Colombia and Ecuador. A spokesman said they

believed the money came from cocaine sales across Europe. Spain is a key entry point for cocaine into Europe. Police officers in Colombia and Ecuador conducting a parallel investigation have detected a link between the money and FARC. The group started its attempts to overthrow the Colombian government almost 50 years ago but has been more involved in drug trafficking and kidnapping in recent years.

Police seize 1,000 marijuana plants The Mossos d'Esquadra seized some 1,000 marijuana plants in a raid on a house in the Beques suburb of Barcelona on Tuesday. The investigation began after a tip-off they received three months ago. The house was put under surveillance and two men

were arrested a few days before the raid as they removed marijuana plants in a suitcase. In another raid on a house in Casteldefells, the Mossos arrested six members of a gang which was distributing drugs from the premises. They were all Bulgarians.

Black September Last month ended a 34month-long record for drops in road deaths – 152, 13 more than September 2009. Traffic authority boss Pere Navarro dismissed the fears expressed in some quarters that the number of road deaths was about to start rising: he said Spain had adopted the measures

adopted by France, where road deaths drops nearly 45% between 2002 and 2008. Sr Navarro said there was a zero drop in road deaths in France last year “and nothing happened”. He pointed out that despite the September toll, road deaths in Spain continued to drop – 1,275 so far this year as

opposed to 1,457 in the same period last year. He said Spain has one of the best records but “there are no more great measures to copy”. He said traffic police would continue to focus on wearing seat belts, speeding and drink driving, which are responsible for the majority of deaths on Spain's roads.

Spain's credit rating down

Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote is Spain's most famous novel, but few people have ever read it. Now the Royal Spanish Academy, the official guardian of the Spanish language, has divided the work into more than 2,000 segments and is inviting people around the world to record short chunks – in Spanish - of the classic and upload them to YouTube. The academy said the campaign was aimed at promoting both the Spanish language and the famous book. A spokesman told reporters the Spanish language does not occupy the space that it deserves on the internet and that the academy

Spain lost its last triple-A credit rating with the major rating agencies when Moody's downgraded the country's debt by one level to Aa1 last week. Fitch and Standard & Poor's made similar moves earlier this year. Moody's said the downgrade reflected the "considerable deterioration" in Spain's public finances and that the slow growth in the Spanish economy would also present challenges. Spain has been among the European countries to introduce tough austerity measures to tackle the problems in its public finances. MADRID

Valencia to get AVE soon wanted to correct this. Written in 1605, the novel tells of the adventures of Alonso Quixano (or Quijano), a retired country gentleman nearing 50 years of age, who lives in an unnamed town in La Mancha. He is obsessed with books of chivalry, and decides to go out as a knight-errant in search of adventure, calling himself Don Quixote de la Mancha. Together with a neighbour, Sancho Panza, as his squire, they have a series of encounters involving innkeepers, prostitutes, goatherds,

soldiers, priests, escaped convicts, and scorned lovers that Don Quixote’s imagination turns into chivalrous quests. The most famous incident is his attack on windmills which he believes to be ferocious giants. People

15 men a day want to kill partner The man in charge of the government's Gender Violence programme, Miguel Lorente, has said that between 15 and 20 men “are thinking right now of killing their partners”. Sr Lorente also said there has been a copycat effect on gender killing, with these “moral criminals” being encouraged by what they read or saw on TV.

Miners could be rescued 'by weekend' The man in charge of one of the drilling operations to reach 33 trapped miners in Chile told reporters on Monday that his drill had only 160metres further to go to reach the men and they could be rescued as early as this weekend. Pedro Buttazzoni, the head of the Chilean mining company Geotec, said rescuers were debating whether they would in fact need to line the rescue tunnel with metal casing as planned, a process that would take several days. If they decided the the lining was not needed, it was

"perfectly possible" that the miners could be brought to the surface by the weekend, he said. Earlier, President Sebastian Pinera said he hoped the miners would be rescued before his planned trip to Europe on October 17th. The

timetable for rescue has shortened dramatically as the three drills racing to reach the miners have made rapid progress. The government said last week the rescue attempt would begin in the second half of October, bringing it forward from

early November. When the rescue shaft is complete, a specially made steel capsule, designed by the Chilean navy, will be lowered. Then navy commandos will go down to assess the situation and help the miners use the rescue capsule. It is estimated that it will take

an hour to pull each of the trapped men to the surface. The miners have already started exercising in preparation for the ride. They are also being trained by public relations experts to help them cope with the attention of the world's

The release of a video showing police officers tasering an unarmed Aboriginal man 13 times roused the public's anger when it was released as part of a report on the use of taser guns by the Western Australian police. refusing to agree to a strip search. State premier Colin Barnett condemned the incident as an "unjustified use of excessive force", while the state's attorney general said he was surprised that no charges had been brought against

the police officers shown in the film. He promised to toughen the guidelines for the use of taser stun guns to make sure they are only used in dangerous and lifethreatening situations. They were introduced to provide police officers with

an alternative to handguns, but they have been described as the new weapon of choice for police. A man alleged to have threatened police with two knives in Sydney died after

being stunned with a taser gun. Afterwards the policemen involved said they were "very comfortable" with the circumstances surrounding his death.

Search for US balloonists called off The Italian coastguard has called off the search for the two missing American balloonists who are feared to have plunged into the Adriatic Sea during a thunderstorm last week during the Gordon Bennett race. Richard Abruzzo, 47, and Carol Rymer Davis, 65, took off in USA2 from a launch field near Bristol on September 25th along with 19 other teams. To win teams had to travel the furthest distance on one fill of hydrogen. The Italian coastguard last had contact with the pair, who won the

race in 2004, at 0800 local time on Wednesday last week when they reported bad weather conditions. Readings from their balloon's tracking device showed it was travelling towards the sea at 80km/h (50mph) before signals stopped. The search-andrescue operation was stood

down at 1100 BST on Monday but coastguard boats on routine patrol will still look for debris in the area. Rescue teams had also used CCTV equipment to search the sea bed. The race was won by the Swiss team made up of Kurt Frieden and Pascal Witpraechtiger in SWI2, which landed near

Rescuers had almost given up the search when they located the miners 17 days later.

Democratic rights advances reversed

Angry reaction to police taser video Closed circuit cameras captured the incident two years ago when the Aboriginal man, thought to be mentally ill, was surrounded by nine police officers in a Perth detention facility and then targeted by a taser gun for

media once they emerge. The men were trapped by a rockfall at the mine near Copiapo, about 725km north of the capital Santiago, on August 5th.

Constanta, Romania on September 29th, having travelled 1,513 miles (2,435.08km). A British entry piloted by Wiltshire-based David Hempleman-Adams and Simon Carey, landed in third place. The race, held more than 50 times over a 104-year period, has suffered previous tragedies.

In 1923 three balloons were struck by lightning and one balloon hit power cables. In 1983 Maxie L Anderson and Don Ida died when they attempted to land in a forest clearing, and in 1995 Americans Alan Fraenckel and John Stuart-Jervis died when their balloon was shot down over Belarus.

Africa is developing economically but some democratic advances have been reversed, according to the Mo Ibrahim Annual Index of African Governance which ranks 53 African countries based on 88 indicators, ranging from corruption to education. Mauritius tops the list while Somalia is at the bottom. The index shows that economic and health gains across Africa are being undermined by declines in political rights, security and the rule of law. The index scores countries on a scale of zero to 100. Mauritius (82), the Seychelles (75) and Botswana (74) top the rankings, while Somalia (8), Chad (31) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (32) are at the bottom. On the economic front, progress was made in 41 nations. In fact, Africa is currently growing at four times the pace of Europe, helped by booming portable telephony and raw materials industries. But 35 states have become less secure, while twothirds have poor human rights records.

Anti-Islam Dutch MP goes on trial The trial of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders opened in Amsterdam on Monday. Prosecutors have brought five charges of inciting hatred and discrimination, and the trial will scrutinise statements he made between 2006 and 2008. In one such statement, in an editorial for the De Volkskrant newspaper, he wrote: "I've had enough of Islam in the Netherlands; let not one more Muslim immigrate. I've had enough of the Koran in the Netherlands: Forbid that fascist book." In 2008, he released a short film called Fitna which juxtaposed images of suicide bombings with verses from the Koran. Mr Wilders was greeted by supporters and protesters when he arrived at the court complex in Amsterdam. Riot police were on duty nearby.

Mr Wilders made an opening statement, after which his lawyer, Bram Moszkowicz, told the presiding judge that from then on he would exercise his right to silence and not answer questions during the trial. The trial was adjourned and a separate hearing arranged to decide whether Judge Moors could continue on the trial. Earlier, Mr Wilders gave his views via his Twitter account, saying: "The freedom of expression of at least 1.5 million people is standing trial together with

me," apparently referring to the number of voters who backed the Freedom Party in June, making it the third biggest party in the Netherlands. The coalition deal that emerged holds only 52 of the 150 seats in parliament and will depend on the support of 24 Freedom Party MPs to pass legislation. In return, Mr Wilders has already extracted policy concessions – the new government has said it will try to ban the Islamic face veil, and curb immigration.

More nations warn of Europe terror plot Sweden and Japan have joined the US and UK in issuing travel warnings to their citizens about travelling in Europe, after security sources warned last week of potential plots on the scale of the Mumbai attacks in 2008. US authorities have cited France, Germany and the UK as possible targets. The US state department said on Sunday that a "variety of means and weapons" might be used against official and private interests, while the British Foreign Office said the threat of attack in France and Germany was high. It

said the current threat level in the UK would remain at severe. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told reporters in Berlina on Monday there was no concrete evidence of an imminent attack and "no reason to be alarmist at this time". He said Berlin had been aware of the possible al-Qaeda plot since early of 2009, and that security forces were vigilant because of a continuing "high abstract danger". And in France, where the terror alert status was raised to the second most serious .

Bankers to get £7 billion Nobel Prize It was announced yesterday that the City of London financial won by sector was set to get £7 billion in bonuses this year. British scientist Despite this being a 4% drop on last year’s bonuses – mainly due to there being fewer people working in the city following the world financial crisis – CEBR consultancy said that around £4.1 billion will go back into the treasury's coffers because of the new 50% tax rate for high earners. CEBR Economist Benjamin Williamson said; “A whopping 7 billion pound bonus payout will be easier to stomach if the lion's share goes to the nation." However, Chancellor George Osborne said earlier in the week that he would not allow huge bank bonuses if they persisted in not doing enough to make funds available to help out small businesses. On Tuesday the banks announced that they may set up a central fund for all the banks to provide loans for small businesses for expansion and

improvements of their businesses. The fund needs to be approved by each of the banks board members and the City regulator. Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, described the clearing banks failure to support small business as its "heartbreaking" failure to lend to SMEs. He added the bank taskforce would also recommend creating a

business mentoring programme to advise companies on how to get applications approved and a review process to ensure banks are following a proper loan review process. The announcement has caused uproar as banks are already saying that they may need to ask the treasury for yet more money from the public purse to bail them out again.

UK crisis helps Britons German firm held 12 Britons are being held in Alicante after being arrested on the island of Ibiza during a drugs raid.

TUI, the Germany based travel company that includes Jetair and Thomson, have said that their increased share of the travel market is largely due to the collapse of several smaller travel companies in the UK, including Kiss Flight, Goldtrail and Sun4U. Bookings for the company “are looking encouraging” for the winter 2010 season - bookings are already up 17% and next summer’s bookings are up 5% in the UK and 18% in the Nordic region, the two areas where the company operates from, and their summer 2010 season which runs to the end of the month has almost sold out due to late booking.

The company’s Chief Executive, Peter Long, said: “We have benefited from this flight to quality." Shares in the company have risen by 0.9%. Tui was formed from the merger of First Choice Travel with the tourism division of TUI AG in 2007. The company trades on 9 times estimated earnings, compared with an average of 13 times for other European leisure stocks, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine and analysts are predicting a company profit of £444 million for 2010 / 2011 at a time when the UK’s Thomas Cook are announcing that they will be cutting costs to weather the expected tough times in the coming year.

The nine men and four women are said to have been dealing in marijuana and ecstasy and had taken frequent trips back to the UK to stock up their supplies according to a Guardia Civil spokesman. One member was arrested while trying to smuggle ecsatsy tablets from Denia into Ibiza hidden in the door of a car. In raids across Torrevieja, Orihuela and Crevillente over 100 marijuana plants and 53,000 ecstasy tablets have been confiscated, plus cars and mobile phones. The suspects ages range from 22 to 74-years-old and they are all originally from the Liverpool area. They are also being investigated for money laundering and identity fraud.

The British scientist was responsible for the world’s first test tube baby, Louise Brown, in 1978 and has paved the way for the births of more than 4 million people around the world since then.

Edwards received the 10m Swedish-kronor prize in an announcement today by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. He is currently an emeritus professor at the University of Cambridge.

Edwards has been responsible for easing the suffering of millions who would have otherwise been unable to conceive, a condition common to one in ten women.

Lesley and John Brown had come to Edwards and Steptoe at Bourn Hall Clinic in the late 1970s, after nine years of failed attempts to have a child. Edwards and Steptoe carried out the IVF technique on one of Mrs Brown's eggs and then reimplanted it after it had become an embryo consisting of eight cells. Louise was born by caesarean section after a fullterm pregnancy.

Manchester-born in 1925, the physiologist developed the IVF technique in a research career that started in 1958 at the National Institute for Medical Research in London and it took almost two decades of studying of the life cycle of human eggs before Edwards and his colleagues, in 1969, were able to successfully fertilise them outside the human body. He continued at the world's first IVF centre, the Bourn Hall Clinic in Cambridge, founded with the English surgeon Patrick Steptoe, who helped to develop “keyhole” (laporoscopy) surgery. Steptoe died in 1988.

Responding to the prize announcement, Louise Brown said: "It's fantastic news, me and mum are so glad that one of the pioneers of IVF has been given the recognition he deserves. We hold Bob in great affection and are delighted to send our personal congratulations to him and his family at this time." Martin Rees, president of the Royal Society, said: "The

work of Professor Edwards exemplifies the ethos of the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science, and of scientists everywhere applying visionary, extraordinary research to change the lives of people all over the world. The Royal Society is delighted to congratulate him as he joins the numerous other Fellows of the Society to receive this remarkable accolade." Speaking in 2008, Edwards recalled the moment he first created a fertilised human embryo in 1968. "I'll never get forget the day I looked down the microscope and saw something funny in the cultures. I looked down the microscope and what I saw was a human blastocyst gazing up at me. I thought: 'We've done it.' "The most important thing in life is having a child," he said. "Nothing is more special than a child. Steptoe and I were deeply affected by the desperation felt by couples who so wanted to have children. We had a lot of critics but we fought like hell for our patients."

Two held for arson Two men were arrested on Monday evening and have been charged with the fire that has devastated the Hastings Pier. The fire has destroyed 95% of the 910 feet long pier which was designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1872. Sixty fire fighters had to be transported to the end of the pier to fight the blaze by RNLI lifeboats as it was too dangerous to access the end of the pier any other way after a member of the public spotted the blaze at 1am on Tuesday morning.

Norman Wisdom dies Tesco After suffering a series of strokes over the last few profits months, much loved comedian and actor Sir Norman Wisdom has died at the age of 95 at the Abbotswood Nursing Home on the Isle of Man. In a statement, the family said: "Sir Norman Wisdom has passed away. Over the last six months Norman has sustained a general decline in both his physical and mental health. “He had maintained a degree of independence until a few days ago. However, over the last few days his condition rapidly declined. He was in no pain or distress and peacefully passed over at 18.46 on October 4th.” The family asked for time to grieve a "much loved father and grandfather". Sir Norman's publicist, Phil Day, who had been with him since 1969 said: "He never turned down any request. He never threw a tantrum. He was 100% professional all of the time. Whatever he said, you had to look for the tongue in the cheek to see if he was serious. Of all the artists I've ever worked with, he's been the closest. It's a sad day." Mr Day added: "I have never met anyone in the profession who didn't like him, right up to royalty. I've been with him with members of the Royal Family and the hairs on the back of my neck have stood up at things he's said. I can't think of anyone else who could get away with it." The Londoner, who was knighted in 2000, transformed himself from a badly educated boy who was forced to steal just to eat, into a movie great adored the world over for his downtrodden little man character twiddling his cloth cap. But he never let fame and fortune change him and he remained humble to the end. He was best known for his slapstick role in the Rank Organisation films to straight man Edward Chapman's Mr

Grimsdale. With his classic “Coming Mr Grimsdale!” ringing out from his character Pitkin, not only was the comedian popular in the UK but was hugely loved in Albania. Sir Norman’s were the only Western films allowed to be shown during the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. In 1995 the comedian visited the country and was greeted, much to his surprise, by hundreds of fans including the then leader of the country, Sali Berisha. During a more recent visit at the same time as the England Football team, his popularity on visiting the stadium outshone that of David Beckham who was training at the pitch at the same time. He once said of his popularity over there: “ I don’t know why I’m so popular here. They must be raving mad!” He put his appeal in Albania down to an absence of sex, violence and crime in his films. That, plus his immense charity work he carried out in the country. And Charlie Chaplin said of him that he was “the only man in movies that could ever take his comedy crown.”

parents split up when he was nine. But he ran away and became an errand boy for Lipton's Tea. At 13 he walked to Cardiff to join the Merchant Navy, where he learned skills as a prizewinning fighter. The football-mad Arsenal fan was spotted performing at a charity concert by Rex Harrison. The actor persuaded him to turn professional, which he did at 31. Kevin Powis, who directed Sir Norman in his final film Expresso in 2007, said: "He was a true legend and it was a great honour to have even been in a room with him, let alone direct him. "He was just a great pleasure to be around." Sir Norman forged an unlikely friendship with musician Rick Wakeman. The pair collaborated and released an album, A World of Wisdom in 1991. Wakeman said: "We got on like a house on fire." Another of his claims to fame is that he wrote the lyrics to Dame Vera Lynn's wartime hit (There'll be Bluebirds) Over the White Cliffs of Dover.

A former army boxing champ, Sir Norman was born to a chauffeur and a dressmaker in Marylebone. He ended up in a children's home when his

Every little helps may well be the phrase on the lips of Tesco management yesterday morning after their half yearly profits were announced at £1.8bn. This marked a profits across the group climb of more than 8% to £32.9 billion with Tesco saying that their Asian market had taken off dramatically over the period with a massive 30% jump in sales figures. "The global economic headwinds of the last two years are being replaced by the tailwinds of recovery in most of our markets and this is helping our international businesses to resume strong sales and profit momentum," said Tesco chief executive Terry Leahy. "Our important Asian markets in particular are emerging strongly from recession and we are now benefiting from the substantial investment we continued to commit to the region during the downturn." Tesco is the world’s third largest retailer.

Sing anthem properly or go to jail The House of Representatives has approved a bill that will criminalise performers who deviate from the official version of the country's national anthem. If the bill gets through the Senate, they will face a fine of more than $2,000 or two years in jail. The bill is very precise: the anthem should be sung to a marching tempo and when played at public gatherings and in cinemas, everyone must stand to attention and sing with fervour, as a sign of respect. Germans killed in drone attack At least eight al-Qaeda militants – three of whom were German nationals of Arab or Turkish origin – were killed in a drone attack on a house owned by a local tribesman in the region of North Waziristan. German media has been reporting since 2009 about the disappearance of several Islamist militants from their homes in Hamburg, thought to have headed to Pakistan's tribal areas. More than 150 people have died in drone strikes this year, including both militants and civilians.

Junta wants action on noise

Property expo offers huge discounts

The Junta de Andalucia is to introduce a new regulation on noise pollution which will back residents who report noise-related problems but do not get an adequate response from their local councils.

This year SIMed will also be offering rentals with option to buy, off-plan sales, low income housing (VPOs) and luxury houses in Tangier.

Article 52 of the new regulation establishes that when a citizen files a complaint about noise, the council must inspect the source of the noise within 15 days. If the council fails to do so, the complainant can then take a copy of the complaint to the Provincial Delegation of the Junta's Environment

department which will open a file on the case. If the local council still fails to act, the environment department will send the pertinent inspectors and if they deem the complain valid, the complainant can sue the owner of the establishment producing the noise as well as the local council for not

Juvenile judge says kids are getting madder

Culture Minister Angeles González-Sinde and Junta de Andalucia premier José Antonio Griñán joined forces at a ceremony in Madrid on Monday in the region's second attempt to have Unesco an Intangible World Cultural Heritage.

He pointed out that it was also an “expanding productive activity” which has created wealth for the region. Andalucia's bid is

supported by the regional governments of Extremadura and Murcia, millions of Andalucians who have joined the initiative through motions of support approved by their local council and some 18,000 people in 40 countries who joined the initiative on the internet. An art without frontiers Unesco's World Heritage Committee is expected to announce its decision in November in Nairobi, Kenya. Sr Griñán said flamenco is an “indissoluble part” of the traditions, culture and people of Andalucia.

The properties on offer are located all over Malaga province, from the Axarquia t the Costa del Sol

as well as Malaga city. SIMed is organised by Fycma, the Provincial Federation of Builders and Promoters (ACP) and the Andalucian Federation of Property Developers (Fadeco) and brings together builders and developers, public

Sr Grande said Unesco's recognition would be a “reparation” for an art that “has been neglected by history for many years”. Guitarist Paco de Lucia gave his stamp of approval to the bid by giving a concert at Madrid's Teatro Real.

Granada's juvenile judge Emilio Calatayud, speaking at conference on Monday, underlined the need for an agreement between parents, politicians, schoolteachers and schools to save young people from themselves. He said everyone was responsible but that the parents had to be the principal actors in their children's upbringing. He said young people knew their rights but not their duties and as a result more and more parents were reporting their children because they could not control them. He said in August alone he had dealt with 12 cases of young people who had been

detained for mistreating their parents. This means that everyone who has children is at risk, he said. “We have gone from being the slaves of our parents to being the slaves of our children,” he said. “We have to measure our words when speaking to them and forget about giving them a slap or you'll be arrested for child abuse.” He said more and more children are “going mad” as a result of starting to take drugs at increasingly earlier ages, and that he often felt like sending the parents to jail, and not their children.

Regulations rash under fire Andalucia's lawyers are beginning to react against an epidemic of new regulations that want to stop people from lying on the grass in Marbella, flying tow planes in Seville or moving furniture outside of the times stipulated by Granada City Council. The so-called 17 March Group of associations of lawyers and jurists have decided to challenge Granada's regulation of 250 types of behaviour in Andalucia's High Court. They said it was one thing to forbid the sex act in public but quite another to stop people from

jumping, playing music or slamming doors in their own homes. Now Malaga has passed a similar regulation to the one in Granada, which is considered the most restrictive. Among many other things, people can be fined for giving false directions,

reading people's future in the cards near Granada Cathedral or singing, miming, dancing or performing magic tricks in the streets. The legal profession feels it's all gone too far – they'll be forbidding breathing in public next, one lawyer said.

First school for shepherds The first school for shepherds and goatherds has opened in Huescar, Granada province, in an effort to attract young people to a profession that is in danger of extinction. The project was approved in May and the Junta de Andalucia's agriculture councillor, Clara Aguilera, said there was never a better time for the school to open its doors. She said young people had been leaving the land in droves but with unemployment at a record high, they were beginning to find working the land more attractive again. Just over half the 15 “students” taking the first six-month course are aged between 24 and 30 while two of them are over 40. More banks and cajas close During the real estate boom years from 2002 to 2008, banks and cajas de ahorro opened 440 branches in Andalucia, especially along the Costa del Sol, bringing the total to more than 1,400. But as the economic crisis started to bite deeper, banks and cajas began to cut back and 85 branches have disappeared since the beginning of last year. The Bank of Spain estimates that another 200 will disappear if the economy does not pick up soon. MALAGA

Good year for taxpayers With local elections slated for next May, many local councils seem to have decided that votes are more important than income. As a result, most of the province’s 101 municipalities have already announced they will not be raising taxes next year. However, the bad news is that if the economy recovers by 2012, there exists the possibility that the newly elected councils will raise taxes quite considerably to make up for what for many has been a three-year freeze. Culture capital bid fails The committee set up to select the EU’s Capital of Culture 2010 announced last week that Burgos, San Sebastian, Las Palmas, Cordoba, Segovia and Zaragoza will be in the running – but not Malaga. Fifteen cities had vied for the nomination with the competition between Malaga and Cordoba being particularly strong. Despite the bitter disappointment of those who had worked hard for the nomination, they put on a brave face and said that at least Andalucia will be represented by Cordoba.

Special guides will aid blind A plaque in Granada immortalises the words of Mexican writer Francisco Alarcon de Icaza (b. Mexico 1863, d. Madrid 1925) which have affected generations of visitors to the Moors' last bastion in Andalucia: Dale limosna mujer, que no hay en la vida nada como la pena de

They will describe to the blind visitors in their charge the colours, shapes and textures of the buildings, reading the poems inscribed on the walls and

Tourism strategy stepped up Rural tourism now accounts for 17% of the tourism sector in Andalucia and continues to grow. The Junta de Andalucia's tourism, commerce and sports councillor, Luciano Alonso, said at the opening of the 10th Rural Tourism Fair held in Jaen at the weekend that an increasing number of Spaniards are abandoning the beaches and heading for the country, which has always attracted nature-loving

foreign tourists. He said his department intended to step up the “Andalucia es tu casa” campaign and will take it to the World Travel Market to be held in London in November. He said the promotion would be stepped up in Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester in an effort to tempt back the British tourists who have been staying away in recent years. He said he had just signed an agreement with

the Portuguese tour operator Abreu to promote two “triangular” tours – one of Cordoba, Seville and Granada and the other of Ubeda, Baeza and Jaen. Sr Alonso also called on Iberia to introduce a direct flight between Malaga and New York, not only to attract more American tourists but also to promote the export of Andalucia's agricultural produce.

The horse rescue association CYD Santa Maria has come up with a new twist on “Calendar Girls”, with the help of Rich Hammond, who is a chief Air Force mechanic at the US military base in Rota, Cadiz, and his wife Jan, who edits the base's newspaper. A group of men from the base have agreed to pose in the nude while they

groom, feed and water some of CYD's horses for next year's calendar. CYD's press officer, Virginia Solera, said the help was desperately needed as more and more horses are being abandoned because of the economic crisis. One thousand copies of the calendar will be printed and sold on CYD's website for €12 each.

Once upon a time Born in Yorkshire on his father’s insistence so he could play cricket for the county team, then dragged off to Nigeria for eight years, returning to England to be educated at Cheltenham and then Highgate in London, Ian Taylor could hardly have imagined that he would one day be running one of the biggest kitchen showrooms on the Costa del Sol. Having taken over Cocinasplus, in La Cala de Mijas on July 1st, 2010, Ian has some exciting plans for the company, which sells a wide range of top quality German-built kitchens from world-famous manufacturers Nobilia and offers affordable luxury in a competitive market. After starting life as a chef, working his way up through the ranks, including a spell in Switzerland, then selling fire extinguishers to Scottish farmers and running his own hotel, Ian has always been something of a wanderer. It wasn´t until 2001, that he finally settled in Valtocado, near Mijas-Pueblo, on the Costa del Sol. He recalls: “My wife, Jacquie and I always fancied moving to Spain, but for one reason or another, the time never seemed right. Jacquie´s mother is disabled, and although she planned to move to Spain with us in 2001, her disability unfortunately deteriorated and she had to stay in the UK. Jacquie now flits between England and here, so she enjoys the best of both worlds. We love the weather and the people in Spain, and the fact that it takes just 6 hours, door to door, when we visit family in the UK.” “We bought a beautiful house in Valtocado through Viva Estates, with incredible views over the countryside and down to the sea. Shortly afterwards I started working for Viva in Alhaurin el Grande, firstly in sales and later as a property valuer in Marbella, which gave me an invaluable insight into the property market in southern Spain. When the plot of land in front of our house became available, we could not resist it. So we designed and built our new villa, which was completed in 2005.” In addition to working for a successful glass curtain company on the coast, Ian has gained plenty of practical experience and knowledge of the Costa del Sol. This spring, he was approached by his neighbour, Ingolf Jacobsen, who ran Cocinasplus in La Cala de Mijas, along with 22 other kitchen design shops in his native Denmark.

Says Ian: “Ingolf asked if I would be interested in taking over Cocinasplus, and I jumped at the chance. I have always been very ´hands-on´ at work, and I felt that Cocinasplus was the perfect business opportunity for me, and something I could build upon.” Cocinasplus enjoys a prominent location in La Cala de Mijas just 50m from the main access road into La Cala from Marbella direction. The showroom boasts over 800m2 of display space including over 20 different designs, all under one roof, just to inspire. With your input, Ian and his staff will find exactly what you are looking for at a great price. The Cocinasplus team will verify the measurements of your kitchen, take your thoughts and requirements, and create your ideal “Cocina” from their extensive range. Once you accept the quote, the kitchen is ordered, manufactured and fully fitted within 6-8 weeks. For the DIY’ers, once the kitchen arrives, just pick up the kitchen and away you go. When it comes time to remodelling your outdated kitchen or if you want to design a kitchen for your new home - choosing the right cabinets, lighting, the best appliances, together with ensuring the practicality and ergonomics are right for your kitchen can be a daunting task. The kitchen is so much more than a collection of units and electrical goods, if the kitchen looks good and works well – it makes you smile, feel proud and happy to be home. Cocinasplus make the process much simpler, and with Ian Taylor at the helm, your dream kitchen is much closer than you think. Kitchen photographs by: Jorge Morales Photographer www.jmgstudio.es

ctually it’s what the politicians don’t say that’s more interesting, although sometimes they give themselves away, like Trinidad Jimenez did in her last speech before the Madrid primary. One of the many things she asked people to give her their vote for was “so you can make your dreams come true”. Now, she must be some kind of psychic if she can penetrate the dreams of so many people. On the other hand, what she probably meant was “and make my dream come true of winning Madrid for my master and me becoming premier of Spain’s most important city”. Well, her dream is not going to come true because she was beaten in the primary by the relatively unknown Tomas Gomez who now has the hard task of beating Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre in next year’s regional election. He’s not just taking on Aguirre – a daunting task in itself – but the whole of the Partido Popular, which will throw its full weight behind her, even though she’s not well liked within the party. She’s arrogant, manipulative, scheming, sharp-tongued and forever giving the man she considers her arch rival - Madrid Mayor Alberto RuizGallardon – very big headaches, even though he belongs to the same party. Just thinking of the trouble she could cause if she loses makes everyone – from party leader Mariano Rajoy on down – shudder so they’ll do everything to keep her where she is.

I H

doubt if anyone would put money on Gomez winning the regional election but his track record inhibits the pundits from dismissing him out of hand. e studied Economics at Madrid’s Complutense University, specialising in monetary policy and the public sector so at least he has an idea of what economics is all about – unlike Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. He went into politics in 1999, at age 31, running for mayor in Parla, a town just outside Madrid. He won a simple majority that time but got just over 75% of the votes when he ran again in 2003, making him the most voted mayor ever of a town with more than 50,000 inhabitants. (Mayors in smaller towns often get 100% of the votes because most of the inhabitants are either relatives or friends.) He repeated that performance in 2007, but got just under 75% of the votes that time around. He resigned in 2008 to become general secretary of the Madrid Socialist Party when it was still reeling from successive losses to the Partido Popular for the premiership, and managed to put it back on its feet.

B

ut what was most telling is that in his last speech before the primary he said something about the party grassroots rebelling against decisions taken behind closed doors. He defied Zapatero, who didn’t want him to run, and forced the PM to approve a run-off with his handpicked candidate, health minister Trinidad Jimenez, a familiar face for the majority of Spaniards. But as one pundit pointed out

on a political chat show on TV, the people of Madrid are anarchists (with a small “a”) and don’t like being told what to do – not even the Socialists among them.

unday’s Socialist primary in Madrid shouldn’t be seen as a referendum on prime minister Zapatero’s government, but instead as a slap in the face by voters who have grown tired of the national party telling them who they should select as their candidates. Even though she lost, Trinidad Jiménez made an impressive showing in her quest for the regional premier candidacy. The health minister only lost the nomination by some 550 votes to Tomás Gómez, the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM) leader who has come out even stronger than ever and seems to have a bright future in becoming a national party leader. Jiménez had been supported by Zapatero and his team, including interior minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and public works minister José Blanco, who gave Gómez the first indication that his candidacy was undesirable. But Gómez insisted on running, ignoring all the demands by the tight-knit Socialist circle to give up his ambitions.

S

E

o Trinidad – who had Zapatero and most of his ministers behind her – lost with 47% of the vote to Gomez’s 53%, a respectable win by any standards. The party yesmen immediately said her defeat was not a defeat for Zapatero but the main newspapers and the majority of pundits disagreed.

T

he good thing is that Trini’s defeat also reflects badly on public works minister Jose Blanco and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba – both of whom have been tipped as successors to ZP if he decides not to run in the 2012 election. I say it’s a good thing because Rubalcaba has a somewhat shady political past and Blanco is just about the smarmiest politician on the scene at the moment. When he gets on the podium at party rallies with his petulant little mouth twisted in a nasty smirk, you just know he’s going to say something devastating (Blanco thinks) about Mariano Rajoy. This past Sunday Blanco said that Rajoy has been permanently on strike since March 2004 (a not very funny reference to last week’s not-so-general strike). He then commented on Rajoy’s recent visit to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostelo where he did the traditional thing of kissing the effigy of St James on the shoulder – his next stop is Lourdes, quipped Blanco, because he’ll need a miracle to become the country’s next prime minister. Not so funny, Mr Blanco. You forget to mention that the latest poll – published in the press on Monday but known to those in power already on Sunday – that the Partido Popular is currently more than 14 percentage points ahead of the Socialist Party. The Socialists are also tipped to lose the Catalan regional election in November and – gasp, gasp – next year’s regional election in Andalucia.

M

ariano Rajoy doesn’t need a miracle. He just needs Zapatero to carry on acting true to form.

ver since 2007 when he resigned as mayor of Parla and came to Madrid to re-organise a disarrayed PSM, the 42-year-old politician has been wanting to challenge the incumbent regional premier Esperanza Aguirre of the Popular Party. Now, after a long, tense confrontational battle with ZP and other Socialist bigwigs – some viewing this brawniness as insubordination – Gomez will get that chance.

W

hile voters in Madrid have not overly rejected Zapatero, they most certainly turned their back on his favourite pick, which is bad enough. And, despite what the Socialists say – including Gómez – this has no doubt weakened the prime minister among many party militants. Zapatero has been slowly losing support since he introduced his broad austerity measures and labour reform; his approval rating continues to shrink in the polls. Talk is now beginning to surface among Socialist circles as to whether it would be feasible for him to run for a third term in 2012 because his candidacy would almost certainly mean a huge party loss. His insistence in appointing his favourite candidate for Madrid, and trying to overrule voters, could be his Waterloo. On Monday, Socialist party officials at a meeting of the national directorate called on everyone to rally around ZP.

G

ómez was conciliatory in his victory speech, offering Jiménez a spot on his slate while denying that he holds grudges against ZP or any of his top ministers who didn’t support him. He said that the primary, which offered the Socialist Party to show voters they are a democratic party, has not weakened the prime minister but instead strengthened him. Very kind words from someone who has been on the outs with the prime minister since this whole primary mess began.

S

hould Gómez try to run in 2012? It is still early to examine that possibility. One analyst wrote on Monday that it would be impossible even for Gómez to win the Madrid regional race because he would only be premier for one year before jumping to a national race. I disagree. A lot can occur in seven months before the Madrid race, and a lot more can happen in the two years before the general election. Whether he wins or loses next year’s race, Gómez just has to show how well he can fare against Aguirre. It will be a big challenge because Madrid always sways to the PP.

A

nd healing the scars caused by the division of Madrid Socialists in the primary will be even a tougher task. But Gómez is on the right track by offering Jiménez to be a running mate much like Barack Obama in the United States when he took on Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. Gomez has already demonstrated to top party officials that he really doesn’t need to count on them because his support lies with the voters, and this has some in the current Socialist leadership concerned over losing their grip on local renegade politicians. The biggest lesson the party hierarchy can learn from this Madrid primary is that meddling in local politics can have devastating results.

ETA and big business

D

on’t you believe that the latest testimonies given by two ETA terrorists before a High Court judge on Monday, that they underwent explosives training in Venezuela, will hurt Spanish-Venezuelan relations. As I have said before, Spain has a lot to lose business-wise by cutting ties with Hugo Chávez's government. Madrid has penned a string of agreements worth hundreds of millions of euros in Venezuela ’s energy industry.

W

orking alongside state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa), Spanish energy giant Repsol has made major finds of natural gas in the Gulf of Venezuela, and has begun tapping into a field in the Orinoco basin called La Perla, which experts believe contains between one and 1.4 billion barrels of heavy crude. There are huge profits to be made in Venezuela. The testimony of two terrorists doesn’t play in the balance when it comes to big business, unfortunately.

Name Supplied Firstly, let me say that we absolutely adore living here, wouldn't change it, but even our Spanish friends have the same opinion that sometimes the administration of this country drives them and me to despair but a couple of things have irked me into action. We got up at 6:30am to feed and prepare the horses for the romeria in Fuengirola (as opposed to this week's feria) last Sunday October 3rd. We thought we had the wrong day! In previous years, we were juggling for space to unload and prepare the horses. This time nobody was around!!!We went to the said location that the procession was leaving from, only to find the street market in full operation. We saw a lone rider and asked him. He had

just found out it was leaving from the Plaza de Constitucion – no notices to tell everyone that might want to join in, nothing! Off we went down the Paseo Maritimo much to the tourists’ enjoyment...I hope! When the procession started, there were only 3 horses. One Spanish man (bless him) and 2 foreigners suited and booted, and not many floats. If the Spanish do not want their traditions to disappear then they need to support their own romerias! After arrival of the procession at the feria ground, other horsemen arrived, most were casually dressed in jeans. Two other lady riders were in trajes. I just thought this was so sad a turnout. I know it must have something to do with the crisis and the

A.R.C.H. Last week The News was kind enough to print an urgent appeal for assistance from the Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses in the rehoming of seven horses destined for slaughter. Thanks to generous horse lovers we were able to save them all. Some people sent donations, others offered to adopt the animals and the response was overwhelming. Thank you all for your support in rescuing these horses from such a sad fate. While humans eat animals there will always be a trade in horse meat. But we, and many more powerful animal charities lobby constantly for improved conditions in the long distance transport of horses, destined particularly for the Italian

Our road is now green, slippery and dangerous, as well as reduced water pressure to our house. During our numerous visits to the Coín Town Hall to report this, as we have been told to do, we have taken our water bill, residencia details, given a mobile phone number, drawn maps and yet nobody has come to fix the broken water pipe. abbatoirs. They travel in apalling conditons for several days, crammed in together with no food or water. Many die en route, too weak or too young to survive the journey. Over thirty thousand horses left Spain for the foreign slaughterhouses last year. Due to the recession, many more will be killed this year. There is European legislation in place to control their travelling conditions, but sadly it is badly policed, particularly by the Spanish . It is totally unnecessary for the animals to be subjected to this treatment when they could be slaughtered locally. But the Italians prefer to sell their meat as "locally slaughtered".

We all like nice blue summer skies; it implies nice weather and makes us all feel happier. But why blue? The sun emits what we see as white light, but this light is actually made up of 7 different colours which cover the whole spectrum of colours from red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and violet. If you split sunlight through a prism then you will see the output light is all of these seven different colours. Light is like the ripples on a pond and different colours are different sized ripples or wavelengths. Blue has the shortest wavelength which means that the ripples are closer together whereas the red light has the longest wavelengths or the ripples are further apart. Our atmosphere, because it contains things like water vapour and various gases like oxygen, nitrogen etc. tends to distort the light coming from the sun and scatters it into its various colours. The longest wavelengths, red, orange yellow and green are unaffected by the atmosphere and pass straight through but the shorter wavelengths at the blue end are scattered more across the sky thus turning it blue. But when the Sun is either rising in the morning or setting in the evening then as it is closer to the horizon its light has to pass through a much more denser part of the atmosphere which now scatters their wavelengths more than the blues and so we see the beautiful red sunsets. The old weather poem, ‘Red sky at

night, Shepherds delight. Red sky in the morning, Shepherds warning’ is quite accurate. Weather systems typically move from west to east, and red clouds result when the sun shines on their undersides at either sunrise or sunset. If the morning skies are red, it is because clear skies to the east allow the sun to light the undersides of moisture-bearing clouds coming in from the west. In order to see red clouds in the evening, sunlight must have a clear path from the west in order to illuminate moisture-bearing clouds that are moving away to the east. Rainbows occur when sunlight is passing through denser water vapour in the air usually before or after it has rained. The rain drops act like thousands of tiny prisms that split the white light from the sun into its seven spectrum colours with red always on top and blue at the bottom of the arc. Rainbows can occur anywhere that there is a plentiful supply of water droplets, around waterfalls or even a garden sprinkler. Rainbows do not really exist in the sky; they are merely an optical image that is unique to every observer who sees it. The water droplets have to be in exactly the right place to project the dispersed image of a spectrum to your eyes and so every observer will see the rainbow in a slightly different place than you. That is why rainbows are always curved; each droplet has to be at the same distance from you to see it. So the Leprechauns gold is quite safe as the rainbow will keep moving as you get closer to it, but its still worth trying to find it at the end of the rainbow. Good Luck!

Members of the Costa Del Sol Photographic Society recently spent four days on a shoot in Barcelona. Arriving early at the airport the group lost no time in discovering a city viewed by most as a photographer’s paradise. The Gaudi architecture with its curved constructive stones, twisted iron sculptures and organic like forms provided an ideal subject for the Society's photographers. With busy days and good evenings dining in the tapas bars and restaurants of Barcelona, the group returned with some outstanding photographs to be displayed in some of their future exhibitions.

The Photographic Society is a registered association based in Benalmadena and provides free workshops for photographers at all levels including beginners. For further information go to www.photoclubspain.com or telephone 952 446 893.

There's a cat named Joe and you wouldn't want to know But he thinks he'd like to be a Hippopotamus And it sounds very strange, and he really wants to change And in that way he's just like a lot of us.

But you look into Joe's eyes and know he loves the shape and size Of his big, round cousin in the water So he sits by the river with his heart all a-quiver Wanting what he really shouldn't oughta.

Oh, it wouldn't be so bad if he was certified as mad But he's not... he holds a normal conversation It's just that within he's in a different kind of skin And it causes him a lot of botheration.

An identity crisis in a bloke like that Has got to get a high consideration At times we're all like that, the hippo and the cat-I guess we'd sometimes like to change our situation.

An identity crisis in a bloke like that Has got to get a high consideration At times we're all like that, the hippo and the cat And it can make for very strange conversation. You see, Joe can't swim... it's just not natural to him He gets his fur wet and whiskers out of shape And a hippo feels a dud unless he's wallowing in mud With his big toothy mouth all agape.

Captain of almeria

e duel

FoLLoWinG on the neW SeRieS oF StoRieS WRitten by P tate

Last week’s episode saw the brave Captain Rodrigo Cartez Vivar being challenged to a dual by Carlos Roberto Xavier, son of the Governor for the Spanish posessions in the Carribean. Will the Captain succeed, or will Carlos run him through? Read on to find out more! The Count looked from one opponent to the other, both nodded, with Carlos clearly surprised by the magical appearance of the pistol and the touch of steel in the Count’s voice. He had always thought of this man as a fop, until now.

‘Very well, ‘said the Count as he lowered the pistol, ‘this is a duel of honour and since there is not an agreement on first blood, I will judge when to stop the duel when a cut is made. I will call “Hold” upon which the aggressor will cease and withdraw from the injured party so that the physician can attend. This order will be obeyed.’ The Count emphasised his last statement by raising the pistol into the crook of his arm as he looked at both men to receive their nods

of agreement. ‘Very well, prepare.’

The young man stepped back to mop the sweat from his face with a towel held by his second. Rodrigo turned and winked at Nicholas as he handed him the empty brandy glass.

‘Approach,’ ordered the Count. Carlos and Rodrigo walked towards each other and halted.

The blades disappeared in a flurry of movement, the young man constantly attacking with jab and riposte. Rodrigo parried and blocked the furious attacks with what seemed like little effort. The two blades sparked as they kissed and their bell-like “tink” of contact resonated amongst the palms. Slowly Rodrigo was forced back until he was at the edge of the cleared area. ’Hold! - to centre,’ called the Count.

‘En garde!’ Both swords flicked up with the blades reflecting the morning light. It was quiet; the only noise was the swish of the ocean caressing the beach. The two men watched each other as their blades touch. ‘Engage!’

Both men walked back the centre of the clearing where they started again with ’En garde, Engage!’ Three times Carlos forced Rodrigo to the edge of the clearing only to receive, ’Hold! - to centre’, followed by a restart.

’Damn you! - fight!’ Carlos cursed as Rodrigo and he walked to the centre again.

skilful parries, as again Rodrigo gave ground. ‘Fight!’ Carlos hissed.

’Sir, you fight hard enough for the two of us,’ replied Rodrigo in a slightly mocking tone.

As they approached the edge of the clearing again, on one of his parries, Carlos turned his wrist and thrust the hilt of his sword into Rodrigo’s face. Rodrigo stumbled backwards, stunned, his guard down. Carlos smiled and lunged in for the kill.

Carlos’s frustration grew; he was sweating profusely from the effort of his constant attack. He rebuffed the offer of a towel from his second He could not get through Rodrigo’s defence and he felt that the older man was playing with him and showing him to be a fool. As they adopted the fifth ‘En garde’ he snarled at Rodrigo with gritted teeth, ‘Fight!’

What will happen next? Will Carlos have wounded Rodrigo enough to win the fight, or will Rodrigo fight back? Read the next episode in The News to find out!

he mountainous and craggy countryside outside Cuenca, in New Castile, is as dramatic as any in Spain and the city is extraordinary, enclosed on three sides by the deeep gorges of the rivers Huécar and Júcar and home to the famous Casas Colgadas.

S

o there will be some disappointment. But Cuenca is already a UNESCO

he area is staggeringly rich in pre-historic remains. A few days ago scientists discovered the almost complete and beautifully preserved skeleton of something they have called the "hunchback" dinosaur - a hitherto unknown species and one of the most complete dinosaur fossils yet dug up in Europe. It is part of a treasure trove of fossils first discovered in the 1980s when a digging

machine accidentally unearthed one of Europe's richest seams of fossils.

ut what of the city itself. The new town is dull and the jewel is of course the mediaeval old town, which can only be reached by car through the Roman centre arch (one of three) that supports the town hall on the south side of the Plaza Mayor.

A

t the heart is the Plaza Mayor, with its beautifully coloured pastel houses and shops and restaurants dotted along the sides. Occupying most of one side is the cathedral with its El Greco paintings - it's Gothic AngloNorman and the only one of

its kind in Spain.

ear to it the San Pablo pedestrian bridge spans the gorge, giving the best - and most famously photographed - view of the 14th century Casas Colgadas,(hanging houses) as well as a dizzying sense of the depth of the gorge itself.

C

uenca is packed with cultural treasures - one of the most significant abstract art museums in Spain is housed in a converted casa colgada - visit the museum's gift shop and look out of the balconied window to get a sense of how the house precariously clings to the rockface.

T

he famous Restaurante de las Casas Colgadas is not a cheap eating experience - but it is truly spectacular and the food is delicious...try the lamb. The tables tucked against the balconies overlooking the gorge are at a premium. So to sit here book ahead. (969 223 509).

T

here is plenty to see, but the greatest attraction is the place itself. Sit in a bar and drink in the atmosphere, and do stay the night – the effect is even more dramatic as floodlights pick out the spectacular scenery.

TAPAS Old Tyme Quiz Music Hall Night From Friday 15th until Sunday 17th October sees Restaurante Los Arcos in Coin transformed into a “Music Hall” venue. TAPAS are staging their latest production, an “Old Time Music Hall”, at Los Arcos (km 6 on the Coin / Cartama road) and with a new stage in place the production is certain to wow the audiences. The show follows the traditional format of Music Hall Variety with singing, dancing and the inevitable Melodrama. With some twenty cast members this requires a huge amount of work for the faithful wardrobe department and their enthusiastic band of volunteer seamstresses. The production requires close to 100 costumes,

with the four chorus selections requiring something like 60+ alone. Add in the soloists and other items and the total is quite staggering. Anyone who saw the last Old Time (2007) put on by TAPAS will know that the show will be well dressed. This is surely one not to miss. So, to ensure a conglomerate yet cohesive, concretion of consummate competence and considerable craft, why not book your tickets now.

Fuengirola Feria 2010 La Feria Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Rosario.

Come and meet a tall dark stranger

The film in English at the La Trocha cinema in Coín is on tonight and is Woody Allen's latest star studded film, the romantic comedy, “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger” (Conocerás al hombre de tus sueños in Spanish), starring Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Gemma Jones and Pauline Collins. This week Fuengirola will enjoy their annual feria festivities from the 6th to the 12th October, many of the shops and local businesses will be either closing early or closed altogether. The fair ground, the Recinto Ferial is halfway between Los Boliches and Fuengirola, complete with all its amusements and rides and along with the bullring it is the heart of the feria. Musical concerts will be performed in the concert hall and individual celebrations held in the Peñas (local association clubhouses) with several of the Peñas being open to the public.

The bullring is near the zoo and hosts the colourful equestrian events. Horse-drawn carriages with traditionally attired proud Spanish horse men or women, or a young horseman, astride his mount with a young and attractive señorita, in her feria dress and shawl seated closely behind him. These are the typical scenes that makes Fuengirola Feria “the horse” feria and distinctive from many of the other ferias in Spain. The fair is usually loud, noisy and very Andalucian.

Unfortunately, the hustle and bustle of the crowd makes easy work for more than a pick pocket or two. A smile and sensible shoes are the order of the day especially as the weather forecast for this year is not that great Fuengirola Feria is notorious for experiencing sudden downpours but it’s been a popular event for many years and a drop of rain hasn’t spoilt it yet.

For a full programme contact the Town hall or visit www.fuengirola.org

DON’T FORGET! NEXT TUESDAY OCTOBER 12TH IS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY - SHOPS & BUSINESSES WILL BE CLOSED!

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps BY OLIVER STONE Starring Michael Douglas, Shia LaBoeuf, Carey Mulligan Could Michael Douglas make Oscar history and be the first actor to win two Oscars for playing the same role? His performance in Oliver Stone's follow-up to Wall Street comes 23 years after the original introduced "greed is good" to the language and netted said Oscar, and has already been touted for picking up awards. The movie is set in 2008 and the cynical, corrupt Gekko has been released

from jail after serving 8 years for insider trading and fraud. He finds the global economy is teetering on the brink, and the disgraced trader sets out on a mission to explain. Well, he sets out on several missions in a complex plot pulling together redemption, credit crunch, and family relationships. His daughter Winnie wants nothing more to do with him, and is seeing Wall Street trader

Jacob Moore (LaBoeuf). Moore wants Gekko's help to bring down corrupt hedge fund manager Breton James (Josh Brolin) and Gekko sees a way of rebuilding links with his daughter through her boyfriend. It's a top cast, and everyone is on excellent form, including director Stone. It's slick and glossy but do pay attention at the back if you are not to lose a grip on the twisty plot.

MOVIE NEWS

Classics head for 3D makeover Well, it's official. George Lucas has confirmed that the Star Wars movies - all six of them - are to be converted in 3D format. Star Wars Episode One:The Phantom Menace is set for release in 2012 and the rest of them will follow. James Cameron's Avatar has made 3D Hollywood's plat du jour but of course his blockbuster was shot in 3D and there have been some big disappointments as directors jumped on the bandwaggon and retrofitted 2D movies with some poor, grainy results. Mind you, the retro-fitting will be supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, part of Lucas' production company Lucasfilms, so hopefully the hand of the master will carefully guide the process. A spokesman said: "Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically

Time travel a box office yet again Back To The Future may be 25 years old, and often repeated on our TV screens, but its silver anniversary cinema re-release has seen it bounce to No 7 in the UK box office top 10. The 80s time travel classic, starring Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, has been screening in 200 UK cinemas since last Friday. The Back To The Future trilogy is released on Bluray later this month.

CINEMAS SHOWING FILMS IN ENGLISH to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience." Since the release of the first film in 1997 the movies have grossed more than $2billion and it's the third most popular film franchise of all time, behind James Bond and Harry Potter- so its thousands of fans around the world will be hoping that the technology is up to the mark.

And hard on the heels of that announcement James Cameron has revealed that he too is to retro-fit Titanic the blockbuster that was overtaken as biggest grossing movie by his Avatar. The multi-Oscar winning film starring Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslett is targetting an April 2012 release - 100 years after the steamship sank in the icy wastes of the Atlantic after hitting an iceberg.

know “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” was not a big success in Europe, and strangely enough movies like “Sex and the City” which is total pants and doesn’t portray anything about New York, was. Honestly, New York is a wonderful and exciting city and “Sex and the City” just tells the story of four women that refuse to grow up and face the fact that they are getting old, and that is just wrong! I am sure there are plenty of single ladies and lads out there who are not as irritating as characters like Carrie Bradshaw.

M

ovies that best portray New York are the early Woody Allen films, “Midnight Cowboy”, “When Harry met Sally” - you know what I mean, movies that show the real New York. What I find interesting about movies, is that if they are made correctly – you can go to the location where they were filmed filmed and it is exactly how it was portrayed on film but if made badly, can make you feel rather intimidated.

W

hat I love about “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” is that it is the most honest (apart from the Electric Lady bit, but then again it’s not too farfetched) movie I’ve ever seen. It is also the best description of a typical night out in New York city, everybody knows everyone and almost every location for budding artists appears in the movie. This movie is a whole New York experience you can submerge yourself into, so

I’ll tell you a bit about it but you should definitely have it in your collection!

N

ick is an aspiring straight guitarist in a queercore band called The Jerk Offs who has recently been dumped by his girlfriend Tris, and is having a hard time getting over it. So hard, in fact, that he continues to make mix CDs for her. CDs that she secretly throws away only to be salvaged by her friend Norah. However, at a gig in Manhattan, Nick and Norah will meet, pretend to be together for five minutes to make Tris jealous and realize that the night has only just begun, as Norah's drunk friend Caroline will get lost, Nick's bandmates will go far to change his unhappiness, and while on the search for a secret show by an ultrasecretive band, Nick and Norah might just discover that their love of the same music won't be the only thing that they have in common.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist” simply wants to be a fun, breezy ride through New York's music scene and the audience is happy to go along with it. The characters are easy to relate to, the writing is intelligent and the direction is solid. Though there have been plenty of "one night in the city" films, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist manages to stay fresh and original and unique through its running time. Overall, this is definitely one to watch at the evening showing with the buddies.

Taking the time to consider another’s viewpoint will get you far this week. You will reach a turning point in a relationship that has the potential to move up a notch and make your heart flutter. Deep, intimate connections are possible and you risk falling head over heels. Making your home life a place of tranquillity and peace is high on your list of priorities and much time will be spent organising and sorting out the old from the new. Being in the right place at the right time is what counts and this is exactly what is happening to you right now, it is as if you are being swept along by a huge wave that is determined to take you where it wants you to be, regardless of your stubborn shows to paddle against the tide, this spiritual wave is so powerful, its overwhelming force leaves you no choice. So give nature’s laws a helping hand and learn to swim with what is happening, adapt and adjust and you will find you have never been happier. Feeling fed up, like something has been a waste of time, perhaps you are wrestling with an annoyance? Whatever is pushing your buttons, just don’t let it get to you, even though it appears as though this obstacle will not budge. Rules and regulations seem petty right now as they seem to stand in the way of common sense. Nothing is as bad as it seems - just carry on taking the action that you know is the right thing to do and let the others squabble over ‘trifles’. The things that hold real value in your life come to the fore and small opportunities start to present themselves. If you find yourself feeling ‘picky’ this week then go with it, sometimes this quality will allow you the chance to demand that you only have the best, or will accept the best and not settle for less than you are worth. For a sign that gives so much, this can only be good – it is an opportunity to work at putting relationship boundaries in place. Your mind is in overdrive as you go over again and again how to establish a better future for yourself or one that supports where you heart wants to be. There may be others to consider and the responsibilities that you hold may get cause complication. Fears of all kinds may be finding their way in and you may be wrestling with old emotions and memories that you find hard to shake. How you choose to navigate these waters is up to you. This is a week of opposites when what attracts repels and what repels attracts. This could land you in hot water and you could find yourself being confused as to where you really stand on an issue. Could it be that sometimes the things we want most are the things we don’t need? Throwing the baby out with the bath water can be a reaction to being hurt in the past and you wish to wipe the slate clean – wait until you calm down before taking action.

LIBRA

A badge of honour descends upon your chest this week Libra so pin it on firmly as others will be thanking you for your merit. You may have lost something to gain an important victory in your life – it has been a week of self-sacrifice in which you have been recognised for your part in something greater than yourself. Let the past dissolve and embrace the new with a September 23rd - renewed sense of pride and inner peace. Read the small print when signing October 22nd documents of importance.

An adventure beckons but you still have reservations as to how it is all going to pan out. Promises have been made and you have stored a lot of trust in your new venture. Maybe it is time to discard fears, memories or excuses that have held you back in the past and go forward with a positive outlook. Optimism will fuel your ambition, hopes and dreams and strengthen your will to move on. Look on the bright side of things and all will be well.

The boxes are being ticked, some of those deep wishes of the past are coming true and one by one it appears that miracles are beginning to happen. Your intuition and dedication to what you have thought to be right has been spot on. One battle may not be worth fighting though and one area where you have placed your energy has proved to be futile. The key is it is as plain as day as to what you need to let go of and what you need to see through. Clarity is your gift.

US medical tests 'crime against humanity' Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom has accused the United States of committing a "crime against humanity" when it infected hundreds of Guatemalans with gonorrhoea and syphilis more than 60 years ago. President Barack Obama has apologised for the medical tests, in which mentally ill patients and prisoners were infected without their consent and told Mr Colom the 1940sera experiments ran contrary to American values. The US has promised an investigation.

Mr Colom said the test subjects were "victims of rights abuses". He added that there may have been similar incidents in other countries around the world, but “speaking as the president and a Guatemalan, I would have preferred that these events had never happened on this soil". Evidence of the programme was unearthed

by Prof Susan Reverby at Wellesley College, who said the Guatemalan government gave permission for the tests. No offer of compensation has yet been made, but an investigation will be launched into the specifics of the study, which took place between 1946 and 1948.

Health and safety rules should be curbed Describing health and safety rules as "a music-hall joke", Lord Young has advised David Cameron to curb those that enable councils to cancel popular activities. In a governmentcommissioned report, the Tory peer also calls for a clampdown on lawyers who "entice" people to pursue personal injury claims. In his report, to be unveiled after the Conservative Party conference, Lord Young will say the public should be able to challenge local authorities that ban events on health and safety grounds. It follows a number of well-publicised cases such as the cancellation of a 200-year-old cheeserolling event in Gloucestershire, due to safety concerns. In June prime minister David Cameron asked Lord Young, who served Margaret Thatcher as a trade and industry secretary, to review health and safety regulations in England and Wales which

in the past the prime minister has described as "over the top". When he launched the review Lord Young cited cases of children being told to wear goggles to play conkers, restaurants being banned from handing out toothpicks and trainee hairdressers being banned from using scissors as examples of silly practice.

Lord Young said that while there was "nothing wrong with health and safety" its remit had spread over the last ten years to cover "everything." He said the same laws that apply to a heavy manufacturing or chemical plant, apply to an office, to a shop and to a classroom and “that is nonsense”.

Sharpen your mind Your brain tissue is steadily being chipped away, some of it by the natural ageing process and some of it by brain shrinkers such as stress and cigarettes. However, there are ways to boost your memory and attention span.

President Barack Obama apologised after it emerged that the U.S. deliberately infected mental patients with STDs

Syphilis can cause heart problems, blindness, mental illness and even death, and although the patients were treated it is not known how many recovered. Prof Reverby has previously done research on the Tuskegee experiment, where the US authorities measured the

While nothing but time can cure the common cold, a simple cup of salt water might ease the misery. A sore, itchy throat and respiratory congestion are some of the more common symptoms of a cold, and gargling with salt water seems to help. A saline solution can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissues in the throat, making them hurt less, said Dr. Philip T. Hagen, editor in chief of the “Mayo Clinic Book of

Home Remedies”. Gargling also loosens thick mucus. According to the Mayo Clinic, for best results, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water and gargle the solution for a few seconds before spitting it out. Adults who want a more palatable remedy against cough and sore throat can try mixing warm water with lemon and honey. No need to spit it out.

YOUR HEART: Getting your heart rate up can reverse normal ageing-related shrinking by increasing blood flow to the brain to improve memory and overall brain function. You can reap benefits from as little as walking 30 minutes three times a week. YOUR BACK: A recent Northwestern University study found that people who suffered from chronic back pain lost up to 1.5 cubic centimetres (equivalent to 1 teaspoon) of grey matter per year. Beat back pain by building muscle in your lower back and abdominals to support the spine. YOUR WAIST: A recent Swedish study found that women who had a body mass index (BMI) of 27 (25-30 is considered overweight) were more likely to experience loss of brain tissue in the temporal lobe – its main hub for memory function and one of the first areas affected by Alzheimer's. APPLES: A recent Cornell University study discovered that animal brain cells treated with the antioxidant quercetin were able to resist damage from free radical cells. Quercetin, commonly found in apples, has a great potential to protect against chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's. Since fresh apples contain high levels of quercetin, one a day may help combat neurodegenerative diseases. ESPAÑOL: A recent University College London study found that bilinguals have more grey matter than monolinguals. Even people who picked up a second language at age 35 saw an increase in grey-matter density. The experts say the easiest second language to learn is Spanish. So get cracking.

SHOPPING: In a recent study of 1,000 participants, researchers set out to find why 75-year-old women tend to maintain better brain function than 75-year-old men. The result: they shop. Shopping requires more physical and mental activity than sitting around and watching golf.

FASHION SPOT

by Lauren Yanoi Dearden

Costa del Sol fashion communications student Lauren Yanoi Dearden takes us behind the scenes and bags some bargains in the aftermath of London Fashion Week.

Backstage and bagging a bargain As a young girl enamoured with all things glamorous in the fashion industry, magazine photoshoots or clips on ‘Fashion TV’ were the closest I ever got to the excitement of the Fashion Week catwalks around the world. Now I am lucky enough to be in the UK studying the industry through the eyes of the backstage promotions world, and I really wanted one day to get involved in the whirlwind that is a Fashion Week event - this year I made it happen. After the madness of London Fashion Week, you may think that designers, organisers, stylists and runners would be ready for a well earned break - but no! The following weekend fashionistas and public alike get together in a celebration of ‘Vodafone Fashion Weekend’, an event in which even trend followers with no industry involvement can trail the rails of the biggest and best design creations, fresh from the LFW runways. Not only are these garments, accessories and beauty must-haves available for purchase at the event, but they also come at outrageously discounted prices.

name but a few - I made some seriously beautiful purchases and then it was time for the catwalk show itself... taking a seat in the dark rows, lit only by the lights picking up the bright white catwalk sent my adrenaline levels soaring! It showcased most of the key trends picked up from the Autumn/Winter 2010 shows, alongside some up and coming young designers making a debut at Vodafone Fashion Weekend. The show was stunning, and note my tip for the top - a designer named Ashley Isham, who has recently created outfits for the likes of Erin O’Connor, Florence Welch, Cheryl Cole and especially, Lady Gaga, so watch out for that one! So don´t forget – get a ticket for this next year and you too can enter the world of haute couture and bag a bargain or two!

Winnie in chart triumph Britain's inspirational wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill, born 136 years ago, has made music history. He has become both the oldest person and the only prime minister to enter the UK album chart. His famous speeches from

1940 have been sampled and accompany music from the Central Band of the RAF on Reach For The Sky - the official Battle of Britain album.

It was released to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle, that helped turn the tide of the war, and has gone to No 4 in the album chart.

Strictly audience swells for Ann Ann Widdecombe may be not so much hot to trot as just trotting on Strictly Come Dancing - but her spirit is captivating thousands of Strictly Come Dancing fans. It was the start of the live shows at the weekend and

audience figures peaked at 10.1 million on Saturday night as Anne took to the floor with partner Anton du Beke. Now the bookies who had her as hot favourite to be first out have slashed her winning odds from 100/ 1 to 12 /1.

EU COMMISSION TAKES UK TO COURT OVER WEB PRIVACY

The European Commission is taking the UK to court for failing to comply with EU rules on internet privacy. The case in the EU's Court of Justice - called an "infringement procedure" - could lead to a fine for

the UK if the judges support the Commission's view.

It followed UK citizens' complaints about behavioural advertising.

The EU began investigating the UK last year, suspecting that UK law provided insufficient safeguards against illegal interception of internet traffic.

The Commission says that under EU law the UK ought to have an independent national authority to supervise interception of communications.

Microsoft sues Motorola over Android phones Microsoft is suing Motorola alleging it has infringed nine patents in its Android phones. The giant software maker said Motorola phones that use Google's Android software are based on Microsoft technology. The functions include synchronizing e-mail, calendars and contacts. Microsoft filed its lawsuit in a federal court as well as filing one with the

International Commission.

Microsoft said Motorola licenced some of its mobile technology from 2003 to 2007 but continued to use the technology without renewing the licence. Its court filing specifically mentions the Motorola Droid 2 and the Motorola Charm smartphones, but

Microsoft claims that the infringements were not limited to those devices. It is the latest development in a web of legal actions in the smartphone business. A Motorola spokeswoman said the company has not yet received a copy of the suit, but based on its strong intellectual property portfolio, plans to

The suit is the latest in a complicated web of legal actions between various phone makers and software firms over who owns patents to the technology used in smartphones.

Oracle has filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing the search engine giant of infringing patents on its technology.

Oracle says Google infringed patents on its Java software while developing its Android operating system.

INTERNET CCTV

CCTV site Internet Eyes hopes to help catch criminals A website which pays the public to monitor live commercial CCTV footage online is due to be launched in Devon. Internet Eyes will pay up to £1,000 to subscribers who regularly report suspicious activity such as shoplifting. Managing director Tony Morgan said the scheme would reduce crime and

help prevent other antisocial behaviour. But civil liberties campaigners say the idea is "distasteful" and encourages private citizens to spy on each other.

The private company intends to stream live footage to subscribers' home computers from CCTV cameras installed in shops and other businesses.

A conference in San Francisco heard that movements involved in interactive play were leading to strains and sprains in feet, shoulders and ankles. Wild swings of the console's remote also accounted for dozens of "bystander injuries". A Nintendo spokesman warned new players to be careful not to "overdo it". The phenomenon of gaming console injuries is not a new one - but is

Amazing Jaguar super concept Jaguar has pulled off the shock of the Paris Motor Show so far, with its unveiling of a four-wheel drive electric supercar concept called the C-X75. The concept has been designed to celebrate 75 years of Jaguar cars, but will also indicate the new Jaguar design language, with elements from the car likely to find their way into production models.

"This win feels great. I could have never imagined when I began my first season in Grand Prix at 16 years of age that I would reach this level and all I can say is that it is an honour to be alongside such great names," said Stoner, now joint eighth in the all-time winners list.

"It's a big win for me, especially because it's my first at this circuit and that means a lot," added Stoner. Team manager Vittoriano Guareschi was impressed by Stoner and his crew as they kept working to find a set-up.

"I have taken all my MotoGP wins with Ducati and it is down to their fantastic support, hard work and above all their belief in me that this has been possible.

“Congratulations to everybody in the garage because we kept cool heads yesterday at a time when it would have been easy to panic and make the wrong decisions."

"Once again we put in maximum effort all weekend here to find some stability in the hard braking and acceleration zones at this

The overall leader of the championship Jorge Lorenzo was very critical of his teammate Valentino Rossi.

"I have to say that at some points I do not think he was completely fair, we were both on the limit but some of his moves were maybe a bit too much and he touched me and pushed me wide when I don't think it was right. "We are team-mates, I am fighting for the Riders' Championship but we are both fighting for the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championship as well and we have to remember this." There had been suggestions that Rossi might help Lorenzo to the title, but Rossi's team manager Davide Brivio said he wasn't surprised by the ferocity of the battle. Danny Pedrosa’s operation went well to fix a titanium plate to the fractured left collarbone suffered in a fall during free practice. The accident was down to a throttle problem on Pedrosa’s Honda.

Seat first revealed an electric sports-coupe at the Geneva Motor Show in March and the manufacturer has now moved a step closer to a full production model with an updated version. Measuring 3.83 metres in length, the IBE is shorter, lower and wider than the Seat Ibiza. This is designed to make the model feel sportier and lighter. The styling of the new IBE has moved closer to being production ready and reflects the lines seen on the new Ibiza more accurately. However, it

First gold to Nigeria at Commonwealth’s Teenage Nigerian weightlifter Augustina Nkem Nwaokolo has won the first gold medal of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi in the women's 48kg division. The 17-year-old set a new Games record of 175kg after lifting 77kg in the snatch and 98kg in the clean and jerk to upset home favourite Soniya Chanu. The Indian twice failed to lift the 103kg she needed to take gold and had to settle for silver with an aggregate of 167kg. Fellow Indian Sandhya Rani finished third with an aggregate of 165kg.

Malaga Ranking Awards for season 2009/2010 Top Malaga bowlers in new competition which could become a regular event, after a successful opener. Last year, on the 7th anniversary of the www.bowlinginspain.com awards for the best competition performers, organiser John Carr, decided to precede the awards ceremony by staging a match between last season’s winners and former winners. The idea was to stage a mixed pairs match which would showcase some of the top bowling talent in Malaga province. The event was a great success, due to the quality of bowling and the very sporting manner in which it was played. Many of the Malaga bowling community expressed a wish that the event become a regular annual fixture. This year the scope of the event became more ambitious with three matches spread over two days. It was staged on 23rd and 24th September, at Miraflores BC, chosen for its central location and the quality of the bowling surface. Thus the five top men and ladies from the

On the first morning, after Miraflores BC owner Derek Shemmings had handed the green over to John Carr, the men from each side battled against their worthy opponents in a pairs and triples format, as did the ladies. The result was a draw with each side winning two rinks. In the afternoon with a similar format, but this time singles and fours disciplines, the Home side started to edge ahead by winning 3 rinks to 1. On the morning of the second day, an encounter involving singles, pairs, triples and fours, in a mixed format, was keenly fought out, with the Home side winning once again by 3 rinks to 1. Battling Malaga hold on for a hard fought away derby point Almeria 1 - 1 Malaga. Malaga went into this fixture hoping to continue their great away form and in need of the 3 points. The game started with both teams cancelling themselves out, and on 9 minutes Fernando had the first shot on goal for Malaga. As the game progressed Almeria began to dominate and after 17 minutes had their first real chance. Ruben, Malaga's keeper, failed to hold on to a volley and in the resultant scramble Almeria hit the post. Rondon went close for Malaga also hitting the woodwork and then Quincy had a good shot saved, but Malaga were not really playing with any rhythm and Almeria broke again, Uche hitting the post after 31 minutes and then he shot wide when he should really have hit the target. After 40 minutes Eliseu received his second

Uche stepped up and Ruben saved what was really a bad penalty. The goal was coming for Almeria and eventually the pressure paid off with Uche making amends for his penalty miss, finishing off a great move after 76 minutes. Malaga held on with both Weligton and Gamez clearing shots off the line with all hands on deck. A hard fought for point which keeps Malaga’s unbeaten record intact away from home so far this season. Britain’s cyclists in the medals at World Championships Emma Pooley has become the first British woman to win the Road World Championships time trial with a dominant victory in Australia. The 27-year-old clocked a time of 32 minutes, 48.44 seconds to beat Judith Arndt of Germany by 15.17 seconds. New Zealand's Linda Melanie Villumsen finished third. Pooley, who won the time trial silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, had to change her bike at the last minute when officials found a discrepancy with it. The incident happened just before the start line but Pooley was able to put it behind her and was quickest at every checkpoint on the 22.9km (14.22 mile) course in Geelong. It capped a fine year for Pooley, who won the Fleche Wallonne in April, the British Road Race Championships title in June as well as the Grand Prix de Plouay in September.

In the men’s event Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara beat Britain's David Millar to clinch a record fourth time trial title at the Road World Championships. Cancellara charged through the 45.8km circuit in 58 minutes 9.19 seconds to beat Millar by one minute 2.75secs. Germany's Tony Martin was third in Australia in a time of 59mins 21secs. In the elite women's road race Great Britain's Nicole Cooke finished fourth after a brave effort. The reigning Olympic champion led the way for much of the second half of the race alongside Judith Arndt of Germany. Welsh star Cooke and Arndt held an 11-second lead over the chasing pack with 3km to go but were hauled in by Italy's eventual winner Giorgia Bronzini.

Europe lord it at the Manor after a great win on Monty’s Monday The United States took it down to the wire, but Graeme McDowell defeated Hunter Mahan to secure a momentous 14½-13½ victory. Thousands of people at Celtic Manor and around the world joined in the celebrations on Monday, which has now been nicknamed Monty’s Monday, after a victorious win by Colin Montgomerie and his European team. This year’s Ryder Cup was an unforgettable tournament and it really has given golf an extremely positive public image. It is fair to say that Colin Montomerie has been an inspirational captain for the European team. "This means the world to everyone involved in the European Tour," said

Montgomerie was quick to pay tribute to McDowell, who produced a crucial birdie putt at 16 to help him to a 3&1 victory over Mahan and get Europe over the line.

Montgomerie. The tournament continued into Monday due to heavy rain playing havoc all weekend long, causing significant delays to the tournament. However, Friday’s delayed start was soon forgotten by Saturday as America took control of the match after two sessions and then Europe seized it back in great style before the end of the day. Sunday’s downpour in Newport meant yet again the tournament was distruped with further delays and after waiting for more

A delighted Monty and his team will be celebrating for quite some time after such a superb win. However, we mustn’t forget the American team led by Corey Pavin who presented Europe with a fierce test of golf from his players. All in all a magnificent tournament! Written By Claire Voet

Nigel De Jong - a tackle too far! Nigel de Jong, the Manchester City midfielder, has been dropped from the Netherlands squad for the upcoming matches against Moldova and Sweden. De Jong was involved in a tackle which left Hatem Ben Arfa with a double leg-break during City's 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle on Sunday. And Netherlands coach Bert Van Marwijk told the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper: "It was a wild and unnecessary offence. I have a problem with the way Nigel needlessly looks to push the limit."

Competitors at Delhi Commonwealth Games are competing in virtually empty arenas Organisers of the Commonwealth Games in India say they are concerned about the lack of crowds, with the competition now in its second day. TV pictures beamed around the world have shown competitors in virtually empty arenas in Delhi. The organising committee said it was thinking of giving away free tickets to help swell the crowds. The run-up to the Games was also beset by complaints about substandard facilities. Concerns were also expressed about security, and the nonattendance of a number of leading competitors. London 2012 Olympic marathon route a 'travesty' An east London council has described the 2012 Olympics marathon route as a "travesty" after learning it will take place in central London. Most Olympic marathons end in the main stadium but organisers said infrastructure made a finish in the stadium in Stratford impossible. Tower Hamlets Council has criticised the new route, announced last week. The London 2012 Organising Committee (Locog) said it was one of their "hardest decisions".
