One of his clients shouted “Viva España and tobacco” as he left the premises on Sunday while several others denounced him to the police.
Many drinkers in bars across Spain moved outside to smoke where weather permitted. Some took advantage of being sent outside to leave without paying. Many bar and restaurant owners fear the ban will hit business hard and Spain’s Federation of Hostelry estimates it could cost up to 350,000 jobs.
So where is smoking allowed or not allowed under the new law?

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Happy New Year!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Happy new Year to you all! And let's all hope it will be better than last year. I was in the uK for the festive season and I suppose I must have arrived a bit late (on the 23rd) but I couldn't see what all the fuss with the snow was about. Sure, there was a bit on the roads so you had to be careful but compared to Switzerland, Austria, Russia and canada I really couldn't see why the whole country seemed to come to a grinding halt. This was the first time we've been back to England for christmas – we usually invite a few people to us here – so it made a nice, welcome and relaxing change to be pampered instead. On returning to Spain on new Year’s Eve we heard that friends had been burgled. The only thing the thieves took was their car so if you see a Mercedes clK c20 convertible in a metallic turquoisey green with the registration number 7798 BBP – please let us know on 952 454 491. Sounds like a “nick-toorder” so we need to find it quick! This is the third time we've known of something like this happen on a new Year’s night and I guess the burglars must realise that most people are out and about so they've got a free rein. Perhaps in future years houses in an area could take turns to stay in and watch the properties, that way these nasty little so-andso’s won't be able to get in and take away your new christmas presents etc., or do any damage.

Deputy PM amused Guardia Civil jailed for torture by impersonation Deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told reporters at a press conference on Monday that comedian José Mota's impersonation of him on TVE1's New Year's Eve programme had amused him. During the sketch, Mota as Rubalcaba talked about the economic crisis and complained that there was still money to be found under the cushions on sofas. The real Rubalcaba said the sketch reminded him that he was from Cantabria where people have the reputation of being tight-fisted with money. He said jokingly: “Mota caught me looking for money down the sides of the sofa.”
Four Guardia Civil officers were jailed last week after being found guilty of torturing two members of the Basque terrorist group ETA. They were given sentences ranging from two to four and a half years in prison. Eleven other Guardia were released. The two ETA suspects were arrested in 2008 and later found guilty of bombing Madrid's Barajas airport in 2006 in which two people died. The court in San Sebastian heard how Mattin Sarasola had a gun pointed at his head, and Igor Portu was plunged several times in a river and forced to drink the water after they were taken into custody. The court awarded them a total
of €24,000 in compensation for the torture. The ruling came on the fourth anniversary of the attack on Madrid's Terminal 4, which destroyed a five-story parking garage, killed two Ecuadorian immigrants and wounded 41 people.

Both road deaths and injuries were down again last year, to 1,548 and 7,954 respectively. There were 1,696 deaths and 8,975 injuries in 2009. Making the announcement, interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said the drop continued the trend that started in 2003. He told reporters that if the government had done nothing to reduce the numbers, there would have been at least 10,000 road deaths and 50,000 injuries on the roads last year. He said the downward trend was owed to the Traffic Authority's constant campaigns against speeding and drunk driving as well as the awareness campaigns encouraging people to belt up and not use their mobile phones while driving.
The number of immigrants dropped 6.5% in the first nine months of last year, with the biggest drops in Madrid and Valencia, according to the labour ministry's permanent immigration observatory.

Santiago pilgrimages set a record More than nine million people made the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela last year which was a Jacobean year – that is, when St James Day, July 25th, falls on a Sunday.
Minimum wage to rise Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced last week that the minimum wage will rise by 1.3% in 2011, to â‚Ź641. He also announced that state pensions would go up by at least the same percentage, or more for those who receive the smallest pensions. The proposed rise in the minimum wage is well below inflation, which is currently 2.3% a year. The prime minister told a news conference the government was making "a special effort at solidarity"
despite the country's economic crisis. He also predicted that Spain would go from recession to recovery in 2011 after "a difficult year" in 2010. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said earlier this month that Spain's economy would grow by 0.9% in 2011 and by 1.8% in 2012.
This happens in a sequence of 6-5-6-11 years. All the members of the regional government accompanied Public Works Minister JosĂŠ

The Galicia regional government has announced a new system to save money on medications – a catalogue of generic medicines that will always be cheaper than the equivalent brand. Most of the medicines on the list are for treating ailment that commonly afflict the elderly, such as arthritis, and which the regional government has to pay for.
The Mexican newspaper El Universal warned last week that the Mexican drug gangs are replacing the Colombian ones as the main providers of cocaine in Spain. Police seized 6,000 kilos of cocaine brought in by Mexicans in 2000, which jumped to 50,000 kilos last year. Some 300 Mexicans are currently in jail in Spain, up from two 20 years ago.

Luck strikes twice
Shopkeepers face graffiti fines Shopkeepers in Barcelona thought they were helping to make the city more beautiful when they commissioned graffiti artists to paint their shopfront shutters before the local vandals defaced them. However, the city's authorities did not see it the same way. A council spokesman said the artistic graffiti “soils the public space, devalues our heritage and visually degrades the urban fabric” the same as washing hanging from a balcony, and fined 160 businesses €600 last year for "antisocial behaviour". A spokesman for one of the companies that provides artistic graffiti said it had 250 orders outstanding, and could hardly keep up with
demand. He said the socalled taggers who deface walls and other surfaces with graffiti respect its art work and do not paint over it. He said it was a big contradiction that the council would not let them paint in public spaces, even with the owners' permission, when the same council mounts expensive exhibitions about graffiti in art galleries. Despite the city's reputation for being relaxed and liberal, the authorities have begun cracking down
on "antisocial" behaviour in recent years. Lying on park benches, locking your bike to a lamppost and drinking alcohol in public are on a growing list of offences punishable with large fines.
Ignacio González, an ONCE lottery seller in Llodio, Álava province, nearly had a heart attack when he discovered that he'd thrown last week's winning number into the bin. He belonged to the Galician Centre and he and 14 other members had bought the number – 48.104 – that won that week's ONCE “cuponazo” of €9 million. He realised that the bag containing the ticket had been dumped in the nearby rubbish container two days earlier. Luckily it had not been emptied and he found the ticket - fifteen happy men celebrated the New Year which was going to bring them a windfall of €600,000 each.

CANARY ISLANDS
Sharp drop in illegal migrants Only 184 people made it to the Canary Islands in 19 small boats last year, less than a tenth of the number who arrived in 2009, when 2,242 survived the crossing from West Africa. Since 1994, 96,280 migrants have tried to enter Spain via the Canary Islands. 2006 was the record-breaking year, when 31,859 migrants made it ashore. Figures for migrants reaching the shores of Andalucia in 2010 are not available but press reports indicate a similar drop in numbers. PALMA DE MALLORCA
Independence march turns ugly A march of around 2,000 people demanding independence from Spain turned ugly when a marcher burned the national flag. The incident happened when members of the Independent Left party stopped the march to read out the party manifesto, after which a masked man set fire to the flag. The police moved in and were attacked by marchers wielding chairs from a nearby café. In the ensuing scuffle, the police beat them back with their truncheons. No-one was seriously hurt. Fewest homicides in a decade There were 42 homicides in the region in 2010, representing a drop of 24% over the previous year, when there were 55 murders. Police figures show that Thursdays were the worst day for murders and that more than a third were perpetrated between 4 pm and midnight. Most of the victims were Spanish males aged around 41, although the oldest was a 94year-old man, and knives were the preferred weapon. The most dangerous area was the Madrid suburb of Vallecas.

The US broke diplomatic relations with Cuba
Planned fuel prices hike dropped Bolivian President Evo Morales overturned a decree which raised fuel prices by more than 70% just days after it was introduced. The fuel price hike caused the cost of transport to soar, and pushed all food prices up which led to mass protests and a transport strike. In a televised message broadcast late on New Year's Eve, Snr Morales said he had listened to unions and social groups and would
"obey what the people say by abrogating the decree raising gasoline and everything that accompanied that measure". The government had withdrawn heavy subsidies for petrol and diesel the previous Sunday, saying it could no longer afford to maintain a six-
year price freeze. Petrol prices immediately went up by more than 70%, and diesel by more than 80%. Transport workers had begun an indefinite strike against the price rises. In an effort to lessen the impact of the bakers' strike, loaves baked in army ovens were being sold by troops in La
Paz and El Alto. An army officer told local media: "We have been baking bread in our barracks, where we have industrial ovens with a capacity for 10,000 loaves a day." The small loaves were being sold at the usual price of 0,40 pesos Bolivianos (about 3p), half the price
that commercial bakers said they intended to charge when they reopened. Snr Morales accused the bread makers of "taking advantage" of the situation by seeking to double the price of bread, noting that the price of electricity and natural gas used in ovens had not gone
Greece plans border fence against migrants
Foreign diplomats invited to nuclear sites
EWS
Public Order Minister Christos Papoutsis has announced plans to build a 12km fence along part of its border with Turkey to stop illegal immigrants from crossing. He said more than 100,000 people had entered the country illegally last year and the government had to act. European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstroem said that while the numbers were "dramatic" such fences were "short-term measures" which did not tackle the root of the problem. The proposed fence would cover a short section of the GreeceTurkey border in the Orestiada area of northeastern Greece which has
become the main route into Greece for migrants from Africa and Asia with up to 245 people crossing illegally every day. The proposal has come under criticism in Greece, with the Greek Communist Party describing it as "inhuman and ineffective", and Human Rights Watch warned Athens that the plan would not relieve it of its obligations to protect refugees. Turkey's Foreign Ministry said it was seeking further information about the
plans, but the governor of one of the country's border provinces said all physical barriers were surmountable. Around 90% of all migrants who illegally enter the EU have come through Greece, according to Frontex, the EU's border agency, which deployed 175 border control specialists to the Orestiada area in November to help Greece tackle the problem. A spokesman said this led to a 44% fall in the numbers of people successfully crossing the border.
Brazil outrages Italy The decision by former Brazilian President Lula da Silva - on his last day in office - not to extradite former left-wing rebel Cesare Battisti provoked outrage in Italy, where he had been convicted of murdering four people in the 1970s. Battisti has always maintained his
innocence, saying he is the victim of political persecution. He has been on the run since escaping from an Italian jail in 1981. and was arrested in Brazil, where he was arrested in 2007. The Italian government requested his extradition. Last year, the Brazilian government
accepted Battisti's request for political asylum, but the supreme court ruled against as he was convicted of "common crimes" rather than political acts, and said the extradition treaty should apply. Italy has now withdrawn her ambassador from Brasilia.
A spokesman for Iran's foreign minister has confirmed that foreign diplomats have been invited to tour its nuclear facilities. Delegates from Russia, China and the EU are reported to be among those invited, but it is not clear whether the offer was extended to officials from the US. Many Western countries suspect Iran is developing nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists its programme is peaceful. The visit is due to take place ahead of a new round of talks on Tehran's nuclear programme between Iran and the five permanent UN Security Council members - the US, Russia, China, the UK and France - plus Germany, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in late January. The UN Security Council has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iran and demanded that it stops its uranium enrichment programme. Uranium can be enriched to make nuclear fuel or be more highly enriched and used in nuclear weapons. Iranian negotiators have flatly ruled out discussing such demands at the Istanbul meeting.

Police had tracked him down to a ranch, where he was celebrating Christmas. Forensic experts say the cause of death was probably drowning or a heart attack.

FACTORY CLEARANCE! Australian city braced for flood peak The city of Rockhampton braced itself Tuesday as flood waters were expected to reach their highest levels in the next 12-18 hours. Military aircraft rushed to get supplies to residents, to whom there was only one land access route left. Police urged people to stay out of the snake-infested waters, that have claimed the lives of three people so far. Hundreds of people had already been evacuated from their homes but some residents of the city - which has a population of of about 77,000 – have refused to leave, and emergency services are preparing to rescue those in trouble. "Tactical medical centres" with dozens of tents have been set up at the small airport in the coal port of Gladstone, about 60 miles
south of Rockhampton. More than 20 towns across a huge swathe of Queensland have been cut off or flooded, and more than 200,000 people affected. State Premier Anna Bligh said 75% of operations at the state's coal fields had been halted, which supply half of the world's coking coal needed in steel manufacturing. She said the flow of water passing through the state's river systems was "nothing short of astonishing". She told reporters: "Given the scale and size of this disaster and the prospect that we will see waters sitting for potentially a
couple of weeks... we will continue to have major issues to deal with throughout January." Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the situation as "a major natural disaster" and said recovery would take "a significant amount of time". US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has offered assistance to Australia. She said the US embassy in Canberra is monitoring the situation and has been in contact with Australian authorities. She said: “Australia is an important partner and close friend of the United States and we stand ready to provide assistance."

Jo Yeates murder - killer still “at large” People in the Clifton area of Bristol have asked police if they are in danger but depite Jo Yeates’ killer not having been aprehended the police issued a statement on Sunday saying that it was not felt that there was a heightened risk to residents. However they have been advised not walk alone at night, make sure they lock up their homes when they go out and take care when opening their doors to strangers. The police have also
increased their patrols in the area and have 70 officers dedicated to finding the landscape architect’s killer. Her landlord, retired public school teacher Christopher Jefferies, 65, has been questioned at length by police but has been released on bail. They say that he remains a suspect. Former colleagues and pupils described Jefferies as eccentric and one said that he had been “creeped out” by the former English
teacher who was also known as “Mr Chips” after the character in James Hilton’s book. Another said that he was a stickler for discipline and would get extremely angry and “go purple” if his exacting standards were not met in the classroom and was known for making lewd sexual remarks to pupils. Police have offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of Joanna Yeates’ killer and have
issued a Facebook campaign to help in the search which they say is
more effective than posters and leaflet drops.
UK hikes cause anger Hearses to change route As of midnight on Monday, the rate of VAT in the United Kingdom rose from seventeen and a half percent to twenty percent.
As a result of the rise the average British person will be paying £400 more in tax per year which businesses say will stop people spending during the early part of the year. Some businesses that have already been struggling to survive have said that the extra tax will be the final
straw in putting them out of business. Haulage contractors in particular will be feeling the rise as the cost of petrol and diesel has also risen above the rate of inflation. Rail tickets will also have risen by an average 6% (twice the rate of inflation) and are set to rise by 13% by 2014, with some people in the South of England having to spend more than £5000 for their annual season ticket. Rail bosses
have said that they have to invest in the infrastructure of the country’s railways and that the government have told them that the costs must be borne by the travellers themselves with no extra grant help from the government.
The lack of spare cash in British homes has meant that charities are also suffering - the British Heart Foundation has said that takings in its shops is down by 80%
Hearses carrying the bodies of UK military personnel killed overseas will, from autumn, no longer travel through Wootton Bassett from Wiltshire’s RAF Lyneham, which is due to close at the end of 2012, when repatriation flights are to be switched to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Once the switch has
been made, the familiar sight of people lining the streets of a town or village will be lost as the new route will not go through any.But parish councillors in the town of Carterton and village of Bampton have suggested the locations as possible alternative routes to continue the tradition begun in Wootton Bassett.

The other passengers, three women and one man, made it to shore with minor injuries. Mr Lowde is listed on the website of the Guildfordbased Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) as a music business tutor with more than 20 years' experience in the industry at a senior level. His work included directing a national music festival for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The latest flu epidemic is expected to hit a new peak in deaths when people go back to work and school after the Christmas break. Close contact between so many people is expected to push the crisis towards an epidemic. Since October, 39 people have died from different strains of flu and of those, only one was over 65 and 15 were previously "healthy". There have been 738 people requiring intensive care which is four times higher than at the peak of last year's pandemic. Symptoms include a high fever, chesty cough, sore throat, aches, upset stomach, headache and runny nose. The most at risk groups are pregnant women, asthma sufferers
and young children who are eligible for the flu vaccine jab, which also includes the H1N1 strain. People who display symptoms of flu but are not in a high risk group can get Tamiflu tablets from their GP, according to experts. They can shorten the length of the disease and curtail it from spreading. The general advice is to take basic hygiene precautions, such as using tissues for coughs and sneezes, and washing hands regularly.
Housing Minister Grant Shapps is heading a campaign to save the childhome home of Beatle Ringo Starr from demolition. The house is in Madryn Street, an area of Liverpool that is planned for a multimillion pound regeneration scheme. Even though the drummer, real name Richard Starkey, only lived in the house for the first three months of his life Shapps says that it is considered by many as a house of “cultural importance and should be preserved. He has asked for conservationists to put forward their ideas as to how the house could be saved for future generations.

Have you seen.... A man who put up posters on trees and lamposts in Bedford after he lost his cat, Wookie, who has been missing since November, has been threatened with a £1,000 fine. The local authority said that it was fly posting and gave Wookie’s owner, Mike Harding, 48 hours to remove the A4 posters from bus stops, lamposts and trees. Mr Harding said that he thought it was a hoax when someone phoned him asking for details of his address so that they could send him some information. He assumed thay would send him some leaflets but instead got a notice telling him that he would be prosecuted for criminal damage if the posters were not taken down. A council spokesperson said that the order had been complied with.

Local News Prosecutor slams ham case The Public Prosecutor in Cadiz has asked for the “immediate filing and without further paperwork” of the complaint by the parents of a Moslem schoolboy against a schoolteacher in La Linea for talking about ham during a geography lesson. He said there was “not the slightest evidence of the existence of any kind
of penal infraction”. He described the schoolboy's attitude as “capricious, abusive, dogmatic and inadmissible” because, he said, there was no other way to describe the fact that a student had tried to censor the contents of a teacher's lesson, in an attempt to impose his will on the teacher and his fellow students.
Negative view of immigrants increases The number of people in Andalucia with a negative view of immigrants has risen to its highest level for 10 years, according to the latest survey by the Institute of Higher Social Studies - one in six as
opposed to the one in four who felt the same way five years ago. More woman than men view immigrants negatively, as do more younger people than older ones. Even so, a majority said immigrants should
have free access to health and education, the same as the Spanish. A majority also said that a job should be given to the bestqualified applicant, regardless of his or her nationality.
People play down qualifications
More control for Chinese stores The Business Confederation of Andalucia (CECA) has called for greater and more effective control of Chinese businesses which have proliferated in recent years. CECA's general secretary, Jesus Reina, said a recent inspection of 467 Chinese stores in the region showed that most were not complying with regulations about the visible display of opening times, and making complaints books available to the public. He also said many were not observing security and health laws,
and it was believed the stores were not observing the laws on counterfeit goods and standards of quality or registering their employees with Social Security. Sr Reina added that in the past five years the stores had made progress in the quality of clothing they sold and that Chinese restaurants had also improved their hygiene. But he added that Chinese goods were so cheap that many locallyowned stores had been unable to compete and had closed down as a result.
According to several employment agencies in Malaga, many young people are so desperate for work that they are playing down their qualifications so as not to be classed as over-qualified when they go for job interviews. One agency reported having cases of former company directors working in menial jobs. Another agency said it had managed to place a former general director in a lower management job. One agency reported that many companies are unwilling to employ overqualified people because they could be a source of conflict: “Such people have ambitions that cannot be realised in jobs requiring lower qualifications so they are unhappy in their work or start demanding improvements from the company.” However all the agencies admitted advising clients to tailor their CVs to suit the job, omitting certain qualifications if necessary.

Andalucia tops domestic deaths list Of the 71 women who died at the hands of their partners last year, 17 of the crimes took place in Andalucia, making it the worst region for domestic killings. Catalonia came second with 11 victims, followed by Valencia (8), the Canary Islands (7) and Madrid (6). Only three regions – Cantabria, Navarra and La Rioja – registered no
domestic violence deaths last year. If two cases currently under investigation are confirmed as domestic violence, this will bring the regional total to 19 and the
national total to 73. Since the law for the integral protection of domestic violence victims came into force in 2005, 81 women have been killed by their partners.
Malaga goes after language tourists A group of businessmen, together with Malaga City Council and the Junta de Andalucia, have created the Live Spanish in Malaga consortium to take advantage of the fact that Malaga is one of the cities preferred by foreigners
wanting to study Spanish, the other being Salamanca. The consortium has a budget of more than €180,000 which will be used to make a detailed study of the sector and to promote Malaga at specialist fairs abroad as
the best place for people who want to combine Spanish classes and have a holiday at the same time. Figures show that language schools for foreigners contributed more than one percent of the province's GDP in 2009.

Marbella to pay loan with building
Mayor Angeles Muñoz (pictured above) has reached an agreement with the Junta de Andalucia to cancel out part of a loan by handing over the council's Urban Planning headquarters. It was in this building that Juan Antonio Roca allegedly coordinated the network of corruption now known as the Malaya case. The Junta has agreed to accept it in part payment of a €100 million made to the interim council which took over in 2006, when the Malaya corruption scandal burst, until elections were held the following year. Sra Muñoz said the council had decided to get rid of buildings like the Urban Planning headquarters because of the unpleasant political memories associated with them. The council now has to look for other premises for its urban planning department which are free of connections with the Malaya case.
Ronda Astronomy Centre falling down The Ronda Astronomy Centre, which was opened with great fanfare just before the 2007 municipal elections, is currently in a state of total abandonment. It was
originally conceived as a centre for training both scholars and laymen in the observation of the skies but has never been used. The United Left spokesman on Ronda council, Rafael Ruiz,
described it as a whim of Socialist mayor Antonio Marin Lara and demanded a full explanation of why the building, located in the town itself, had been allowed to fall into such a
state of disrepair. The council announced plans some months ago to cede the building to an astronomy association in the town but nothing has come of it so far.
Mayors against gas exploration The mayors of Malaga, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Benalmadena and several municipalities in the Axarquia – towns which depend heavily on tourism – have criticised the Junta de Andalucia's decision to allow two companies to explore for gas off the Costa del Sol coastline. In a communiqué, they said there was a maximum risk of catastrophe in a closed-in sea where any pollution would be a major threat for the flora and fauna as well as the tourists. They ask for exploration activities to be
banned from the Mediterranean altogether because of the danger of human and mechanical error. They said: “The sea is a very important resource and must be protected at all costs.”

Wrongly jailed man compensated A man who spent 13 years in jail after being wrongly convicted of rape is to receive compensation of €555,600 €120 for each of the 4,630 days he was in jail. Rafael Ricardi (pictured above), a gypsy from Cadiz, was released on July 25th, 2008, and immediately sued the government for compensation for wrongful conviction. He finally received the cheque from the Ministry of Justice on the last day of last year. His lawyer said it was not enough for taking away 13 years of his client's life. Antonia Alba said €120 was the standard amount paid to people who had been kept in jail preventively but whose cases had finally not gone to court. She told reporters:
“Here we're talking about a firm conviction for rape, and everything it means to be held 13 years in jail.” She said her client's life had been destroyed and was advising him to appeal. In a telephone interview with El Pais newspaper, Ricardi said he was thinking about it but “at least I can now pay the rent and put food on the table. I had nothing before but now I'm much more relaxed.” Ricardi, who was a drug addict and lived under a tree at the time of his arrest in 1995, was accused of the

Plastic bag tax deferred Anticipating several price increases – including the electricity price hike – in January, in the last week of 2010 the Junta de Andalucia announced its decision to defer until May the five cent tax on plastic bags that are used only once. It is also deferring an increase in the water rates which was to be collected through the local councils. A spokesman said the decisions had been made after protests from tradesmen and councils. However, he said the taxes were only being deferred and would be implemented on May 1st.

These raffles are organised to encourage trade, usually around Christmas, and are becoming popular throughout the region. They consist of participating stores giving numbered tickets to people making purchases, which are then drawn on a specific date, usually by the local mayor.

Bull heaven
Biting off the hand
T
he New Year definitely got off to a bad start for the opposition Popular Party despite the good news it received that it had increased its voting margin in December over the governing Socialists by as much as 18 percent. There is a battlefield where PP casualties are dropping like flies – well, at least resigning en masse – and it is in the northern region of Asturias, where the Socialists have governed since 1999 and where opposition leader Mariano Rajoy is trying to gain a much-needed foothold in May’s local elections.
T
hey’ve been reviewing last year’s most outstanding news items on Spanish television endlessly over the past few days and one I could have done without seeing again was the image of a bull in panic as it was tied to a post to have the metal flame holder attached to its horns in what the Catalans call carrebous. For sheer hypocrisy you can’t beat the Catalans. In the space of a few days last year, the Catalan parliament banned bullfighting because it’s cruel – the real reason being that it’s Spanish - but approved the carrebous because it’s Catalan tradition. I’m not going to defend bullfighting but at least the fights are carried out in an orderly fashion and shouldn’t last longer than 20 minutes. In the carrebous, the bull is forced by several men towards a post to be tied while another couple of men grapple with it until they have fitted a metal structure over its horns. You only have to look at the bull’s face to see that it is out of its mind with panic. Whatever is in the metal holders is then lit and the animal is let loose so that the whole village or town can chase it around, supposedly for a brief time but usually for several hours until its pursuers get bored. The bull is not killed, at least not in public, but it is usually so exhausted and traumatised by the experience – and often badly wounded by “brave” men poking knives at it - that it is usually put out of its misery away from the eyes of the public.
S
pitting blood at man’s inhumanity to every other form of life on this earth, I came up with a lovely fantasy, something I’m prone to at the start of a new year. There are two heavens – one for the Catalans and another for the rest of us. Catalan heaven is pretty empty because the man at the gate, St Peter, turns out to be a Spanish fighting bull. He sends all Catalans who’ve enjoyed or tolerated carrebous to hell where, to their horror, the Devil turns out to be the biggest, blackest, nastiest fighting bull they’ve ever seen. He consigns them to be “carreboud” for all eternity by gloating bulls who take great delight in making them suffer. For your sins, he bellows. By the way, the other heaven is pretty empty as well.
T
he dream that was the subject of my first column last year turned out not to have been so fantastic after all. I
dreamt that King Juan Carlos leapt out of bed that New Year’s morning, crying: “That’s it, I’ve had enough, I’m going to take over the government”. He then proceeded to set up an interim government, involving his family and non-Zapatero-loving politicians from the different parties while he swanned round the world explaining why he was forced to take such drastic action. An orderly general election was held on his return and Spain lived happily ever after. My dream didn’t come true but it would have been better for Spain if it had.
H
owever, it’s really beginning to look as if Zapatero won’t be around much longer. Apparently the Partido Popular is gearing up for an election in the autumn, with deputy premier and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba as the Socialist Party candidate. An internal poll shows that around two thirds of card-carrying members of the party would prefer Rubalcaba to lead them into the next election. But in the same newspaper, we have health minister Leire Pajin saying that the party backs Zapatero to the hilt. Just where are their heads, I wonder. Again in the same newspaper, the Socialist premier of Extremadura, Gillermo Fernandez Vara, has said there are only three options for the Socialist's candidate in next election and they’re called – Alfredo, Perez, Rubalcaba. You can’t say it more clearly than that.
A
nother poll gives the PP an 18% lead over the Socialists. Now, while the miracle Zapatero is praying for to wipe out that lead may happen between now and March 2012, I wouldn’t put my money on it. All the economic experts – both national and international – predict that unemployment will get worse this year. And that’s the one thing that will seal Zapatero’s fate.
S B
o while 2010 was definitely the PM's anno horribilis, 2011 threatens to be even worse.
ut enough of politics. I wish you all the best for the New Year, and may you have a much better one than Zapatero's going to have.
T
hese aren’t just ordinary party members who are abandoning ship, but instead staunch veterans who were once the backbone of prime minister José María Aznar’s government. They have left because of Rajoy, who has jilted them in favour of building a new and modern centre-right party with his own people at the helm. The publicity has been bad and Rajoy’s behaviour has been far from befitting of a leader who owes his entire career to his political godfather Francisco Álvarez-Cascos.
O
n Saturday, the PP got caught in a stir when Cascos announced that after 34 years he was resigning his affiliation from the party he helped build in an effort to preserve his “dignity.” A former deputy prime minister under Aznar, Cascos said that he felt betrayed by Rajoy and members of the national directorate for refusing to put an end to a defamatory campaign launched against him by some PP members in Asturias . Cascos had made it clear early on that he wanted to become the opposition party’s candidate for regional premier in the northern region. Some internal polls even showed that he could be a shoe-in. But on Thursday evening, when the party’s electoral committee got around to selecting candidates, the PP veteran saw his Asturian aspirations drained out of him. The committee opted instead to nominate Isabel PérezEspinosa, the right-hand woman to Oviedo mayor and local party boss Gabino de Lorenzo. It was the start of a series of uncontrollable and unfortunate events for Rajoy.
C
apping Saturday morning’s New Year's Eve “resaca” (hangover) was the strong letter that came in the mail with the news announcing that Cascos was leaving the party. "The decision is final and the circumstances that justify them you know too well," he told Rajoy, reminding him that he had asked the national committee on several occasions to put a stop to the insults and slurs the Asturias PP members were lodging against him. The slander campaign began last year when Cascos refused De Lorenzo's offer to form a pact. The old political horse told the mayor that he wanted to reorganise the PP party in Asturias, which didn't set well with the
Alvarez Cascos
regional party barons, who preferred to have one of their own they can control. Among the nasty things they called him were “street terrorist” and “sexagenarian."
"
In my last handwritten note dated October 27,” Cascos wrote, “I told you that, in my opinion, politics requires very high doses of patience and flexibility but complying with the educational and civilized standards adopted by any organization and which are considered non-negotiable."
I
t was Cascos who brought in a young Rajoy some 20 years ago, convinced Aznar that the guy had a future, and took him under his wings. The now-PP leader, one of the most powerful men in Spain, got his meagre beginnings as deputy secretary of organizational policy thanks to Cascos’ “enchufe.” And Cascos himself isn’t anyone to scoff at. Along with Aznar and Rodrigo Rato, a former IMF official who is now Caja Madrid saving bank president, he helped reorganise and modernise the current centre-right conservative party following the withdrawal from the political scene in 1990s of Franco-official-turneddemocracy-lover Manuel Fraga. Cascos isn’t an easy person to get along with, according to political sources, but he does yield respect from leaders such as Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre and Galicia's regional premier Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
T
he floodgates were opened. On Monday, regional deputy Pelayo Roces Arbesú, another PP veteran with 30-plus years, also resigned from the party. “I have this strange sensation, but I get the feeling this is no longer my party,” Roces Arbesú said. Thirty-eight other members followed suit. Cascos now says that he was going to develop his own platform, and perhaps his own party, with the aim of running for regional premier in the May elections against his former party colleague.
I
am tempted to liken Rajoy to a badly trained Rottweiler, but I won’t because I am a dog-lover. Instead, I see the PP leader’s conduct in this entire affair as just another warning sign that his trustworthiness is as solid as his loyalty to friends.

In the cosy Los Arcos Theatre, on the Coin/Cartama road, there had been an incredible transformation to a log cabin in Aspen, Colorado surrounded by a snow
Diabetic Support new venue
From the first song ‘Sleigh Ride’, when a sleigh entered the auditorium laden with Christmas gifts and singers all tightly wrapped up in their winter woollies, you just knew that this was going to be an entertaining show beyond your expectations and not your usual Christmas Concert. Suzanne and Kevin Turner amazed the audience by ice skating whilst the choir sang ‘Winter Wonderland for a
truly magical moment. And John Parker, always the showman, amused with his ‘Frosty the Snowman’. The lighting effects by Gerry Harris enhanced every song, which included a delightful snow scene to accompany the song 'Let it Snow', seen through the window to the mountains in the distance. The singing from the TAPAS Choir and Cabaret, was extremely good with some excellent harmonies and solo performances, all sung with energy and Christmas joy - Well done to all.

Diabetes is now a scourge of the Western World and Spain is no exception. Most European countries have nearly 10% of the population now suffering with this problem due to poor life style, bad eating habits and lack of exercise.
Anne Bowles said: “We wish to thank the directors of Xanit Hospital in helping to care for the community in such a positive way through our diabetes awareness programme.”
It's not always easy to tell when an animal is in distress, pain or illness. But the following signs are indications your cat needs a veterinary check up:
Largest selection of greeting cards & gifts. Reliable postal service.
Nurse Tony Wooster was in attendance and found several people with possible diabetes. He recommended them to go to their normal GP as soon as possible for a blood test.
Patrick Shaw said: “We are very pleased that Anne Bowles (co-founder of the Diabetic Support Group) has decided to set up a test morning on a regular basis. Our doctors know that diabetes can lead to so many other health complications so it is imperative that it is caught at an early stage. By encouraging any of our staff and patients to have a test will go a long way to helping to keep this major disease in check.”

Dear friends & supporters, Following the flood the shelter is slowly getting back to normal and we are now able to take donations of food, blankets, towels etc. which you can now bring directly to the shelter. Our sincere thanks, as always, to everyone who has already donated money or items or
helped at the shelter with the clean up operation. Your kindness and generosity has helped tremendously to begin to get the shelter back on its feet and to make improvements to make it a safe and secure place for the animals in our care. Our sincere thanks also to all our wonderful foster 'parents'
John Chambers Your page 25 article "What to do about snoring" (in your December 15th edition), didn't mention what has been said to be one of the more-interesting facts about snoring. Many thousands of years ago, in primordial times, a great noisy snore was rated to be one of the highly-prized attributes of a top Alpha Male ... and the noisier and morehorrendous the better! In an age when the earliest men and their females and children lived in darkness in
Sven Olav Eid Of course I had my suspicions, but wanted your paper to have the benefit of doubt. Now I know. At the end of the day you lack the crucial, ethical /moral capacity for all humans - the " Civil Courage " the nearly deontological professional s.q. for a genuine proper serious publisher. You are affraid of reminding a great number of your readers of their bad conduct, manners, BEHAVIOUR. ( I am sure you privately conduct yourself differently - in case you have a dog) But I doubt that, respecting the David Dogman according to what I have heard from that fellow. Of course, there are also other tourists with bad behaviour, but in this area, and e.g. in Cala Honda the overwhelming majority are your copatriots. And allow me to mention other examples of bad behavoiur espially British style - the heavy drinkers, womitting on the pavement after leaving their bars and other kinds of unsivilized conduct. When I ask British tourists in the wardrobe at our leisurre centre ( Brit. owned ), if they are not having a shower ( a euphemism for a wash ) before entering the area with zauna and
who kindly took all the dogs and some cats to places of comfort and safety. As always our fundraising efforts continue and details of events will be published in The News soon. I look forward to seeing you soon.

So, for partners in the 21st century, you should actually sleep peacefully and blissfully if your man snores loudly. In his subconscious dream-state he may be back in primordial times outfacing a sabre-toothed tiger to keep you and your children safe through the night. He's probably being quite brave really. Now there's a thought! With best wishes -- Felices fiestas
Calahonda Swimming pool - the answer is to often F.off, P.off, and mind your own business. It is my buisiness because it has to do with a minimum of hygiene we all are exposed to in a public bath. Of course, we have all experienced the fact that "the tourist is a human beeing in the very worst meaning of the concept" Generally because the tourist is away from the normal controll of their neighbours or collegues at work. But the special British bad behaviour must be based on degenerated families and the British society to-day - i.e. more so than in other countries. Changeing thisdevelopment ought to be an important issue for you in Spain, even though it is evidently of very limited interest for the responsible of the British info. media. Arnold Toynbee was right "Nations do not die, they commit suicide " ( The actual islamization etc. ) Of course there are good exceptions - e.g. Mr. William Farmer, Fuengirola - v. behaving dogs are suffering under bad owners. A normally domesticated dog doesn`t need to urinate and leave excrements everywhere in public spaces. Let me - to avoid any cheap explanations etc. respecting this matter, inform you that since I was attached to the British Army ( RASC) during the last year of the second WW, I have been very anglophile. I consider Great Britain the best, most important nation in Europe. You had Margareth Thatcher and also Tony Blair ( wrong party, but right about Iraq etc.) I am also a cynophile etc., In my parents home during my childhood there were dogs in a natural environment. During my long morning walkingtours for many years, in this area, I have established / developed a kind of friendship /conversation with dogs in gardens etc. I wish you a pleasent evening. Editors note: As requested, this letter is published in its entirety, as written to us here at The News. I’m sure there are many of our readers that will raise an eyebrow at its content!
Also the Sun is not at the dead centre of the Earth’s orbit but is slightly off to one side which means that at certain times of the year we are closer to the Sun. That day was last Monday January 3rd when the Earth was only 147,098,074 km from the Sun (I hope you noticed how warm the weather was!) The closest point to the Sun is known as Perihelion and the most distant point which occurs on July 4th is known as Aphelion when we will be 152,097,701 km from the Sun. So why then, I hear you ask, is it cold in January when we are closest to the Sun and hot in July when we are furthest from the Sun? The answer is that the seasons have nothing to do with the Earth’s distance from the Sun. The reason that we have seasons is because the Earth is not standing straight up on its south pole but instead is tilted over by about 23 ½ degrees. In summer the north part of the Earth is pointed towards the Sun and so we get more of the sun’s heat and light but in winter the northern part of the Earth is pointed away from the Sun so the sun’s rays are weaker causing the temperature to fall. The Earth is travelling around the sun at an incredible 108,000 km per hour which is the equivalent of travelling the distance to the Moon in under 4 hours. While the Moon orbits around the earth at over 3679 km per hour.
further away. The English astronomer and apple dodger Sir Isaac Newton was the first person to demonstrate this in 1687 in one of his famous theories of planetary motion. The Earth spins on its axis at an average speed of 1,674.4 km per hour but this isn’t a constant speed either as it spins faster during Perihelion than it does at Aphelion, so measuring the time of day using a sundial will only be accurate for about 6 days out of the year. Measuring the time from solar noon to solar noon each day changes throughout the year and can be up to plus or minus 16 minutes from the true solar time. This is where Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) comes in. Greenwich Mean Time is the average time of the day constant throughout the whole year. A line drawn from the North Pole to the South Pole and passing through Greenwich in England indicates the prime meridian, all points to the east of this line are ahead of GMT while all points to the west are behind GMT. Spain being mostly to the west of Greenwich is one hour ahead of GMT when in fact it should be 1 hour behind - this was because of a Mister Franco, who in 1940 changed Spanish time to coincide with Germany and Italy - he did promise to change it back after the Second World War but somehow it got forgotten. Happy New Year.

The Route
I
n “The Way”, Hollywood actor Martin Sheen is directed by his son Emilio Estevez. Sheen plays Tom Avery, an ophthalmologist from California, who becomes a pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela after he receives the news of his son’s tragic death on the Camino.
I
t’s a gripping, epic journey as Tom struggles with his grief, and tries to understand the loss of his son David. He finds himself in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the small village in southern France where many pilgrims start the Camino today and where David had died in an accident at the start of his journey. Acting on impulse, Tom shoulders his son’s backpack and ashes, and begins the 800km walk across Spain that his son
now never would, scattering the ashes along the way.
E
milio Estevez has described the movie as a “love letter” to Galicia. Martin Sheen was christened Ramón Estevez and was the son of a Galician immigrant from a small village near Pontevedra, and the film is dedicated to his father. It’s a visually rich epic, that pays reverence to the glories of the Spanish countryside and pays tribute to the many thousands who each year undergo the pilgrimage – heading from France, through the Pyrenees, through northern Spain, until they reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of the Apostle St James are said to be buried.
T
he Way of St James has been one of the most important Christian pilgrimages since medieval times and it has existed for over 1,000 years - earliest records of visits to the shrine dedicated to St James at Santiago de Compostela date from the 8th century. The Way became lined with monasteries and hospices for the pilgrims, villages sprang up along the route and a French monk even wrote what was possibly the first tourist guidebook. And all because legend said that St James’ remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain where they were buried on the site of what is now the city. The body was buried, lost and forgotten but rediscovered at Compostela in 813 at a time of huge significance for the Spanish Church as
the country fought its later battles to overthrow the Moors. Reformation and unrest in 16th century Europe led to a decline in the pilgrimage and by the early 1980s only a few a year arrived in Santiago.
B
ut since the late 1980s the way has attracted a growing number of modern-day pilgrims from around the world and today thousands of Christians and nonChristians alike set out from their homes, or from popular starting points, travelling on foot, on horseback or donkey, or by bicycle. The most popular route is the French Way or Camino Francés, starting from Saint-Jean-Pied-dePort on the French side of the Pyrenees or from Roncesvalles on the Spanish side. The Camino Francés was declared the
first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in October 1987 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
T
here are plenty of subsidiary routes too for the growing number of pilgrims to follow –and that number keeps increasing. In 1986 just 2,491 received the official Compostela at the Cathedral - the stamped proof that the walk has been successfully completed. Numbers increase dramatically in Holy Years so the figures for 1992 showed 9,764 pilgrims and in the Holy Year of 1993 numbers soared to 99,439. Latest figures for 2009 showed 145,877 but this will have been topped by 2010, a Holy Year. But one thing is certain – all routes lead to the Cathedral. The main body is Romanesque, rebuilt in the 11th and 12th
centuries after it was destroyed by the Muslim vizier of Cordoba in 977. On July 25th the annual fiesta in honour of St James involves a symbolic burning of a cardboard effigy of the mosque at Cordoba.
B
uilt in a warm golden granite, Santiago de Compostela is one of the most beautiful of all Spanish cities. The medieval city is a national monument, and the Cathedral is a stunning creation flanked by immense bell towers and adorned with statues of St James - redolent of history and set in an enchanting city it is worth making the effort to visit...even if you do not follow the traditional method of getting there.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Little Fockers BY PAUL WEITZ Starring Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson Meet The Parents had some huge laugh out loud moments and made big box office bucks for the studio, so no wonder executives could not resist a follow-up in the shape of Meet The Fockers. That too pulled in the punters, so it’s no surprise that the studio reckoned there was still yet more mileage in the tense relationship between exCIA paranoid operative Jack Byrne (De Niro) and
his bungling but wellmeaning son-in-law Gaylord “Greg” Focker (Stiller). In the latest instalment Greg is now an underpressure father of twins and unless you are a fan, the joke has possibly been stretched a bit thin. Plus most of the laughout-loud stuff has been on the trailers. Still, there is fun to be had from the continuing tension in the
relationship between Greg and his baleful dad in law and Owen Wilson breezily reappears as the jet setting banker whom Jack would have preferred as a son-inlaw, and brings some nice, light touches to the proceedings.
Laura Dern bring a bit of solidity. Jessica Alba plays Andi Garcia, a drugs rep who tries to sell nurse Greg a drug that increases men’s physical prowess and in the process develops a big crush on the hapless Focker.
Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand show up very briefly as Greg’s parents and no doubt pocket a decent pay check (nice work if you can get it) and Harvey Keitel and
No prizes for guessing what happens when Greg accidentally injects Jack with the wonder drug. All in all, if you are a Focker fan then this is for you.

He had made many memorable movies and some crass, Jingoistic ones, but True Grit was the only one to win him an Oscar.
And it enjoyed the biggest opening yet of any Coen brothers movie to date, when it hit US cinema screens at Christmas.
So it was a bit of a risk for the Coen brothers to “remake” this classic, starring Jeff Bridges as Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, the young girl who has
So, a must see for Coen fans, for those who want to compare it to the original, and to the fans of proper old fashioned story telling.

a 114 minute runtime, it is simply too long. Entire characters and subplots are superfluous. It also suffers badly from second-act-drag, believing that given enough on-screen time we will somehow empathise with our two leads.
Starring Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon called on Cogburn to help track down her father’s killers. The gamble paid off. The Coens have secured great performances from the stars – especially 14-yearold Steinfeld – and the critics have been warmly appreciative.

but spends the next hour and a half ignoring these. The original, a French film from 1998 entitled The Dinner Game, was a social satire focusing on the ridiculous measures the aristocracy will go to amuse themselves. It was full of witty dialogue and, at 80 minutes long, it worked. As often happens, Hollywood seems to have missed the point and delivered a broad and bland remake. he movie’s opening Tprobably credits with the mice is the best part of the whole movie, and considering how badly acted, annoying and
irritating the characters were it would have been better to have filmed the whole thing with just the mice. ne of the things that O upset me the most about this movie is the actual “dinner” scene was about 10 minutes long, so as I mentioned the plot line earlier you must be wondering - what happened in the rest of the 100mins? Let me enlighten you: after Rudd’s girlfriend walks out on him, Carell turns up and this is basically when the movie goes down the toilet. Carell throws Rudd’s back out, plays around on Rudd’s computer and then invites a psycho ex-girlfriend round and if you thought it couldn’t get any worse, somehow it does. The slapstick humour is just downright not funny, it’s stupid – the scenes are far too long, most of them should have been edited or better removed. fter eventually getting A rid of the ex-girlfriend, their next dumb adventure begins. Breaking into Rudd’s girlfriend’s bosse¡s house, a business lunch from hell, more crazy ex-girlfriend shenanigans, chasing after Rudd’s current girlfriend and eventually the dinner. This movie should probably be called “The Adventures of Schmucks” ll in all, to put it politely, I would prefer to be A covered in itching powder then to ever have to sit through that movie again. The best advice I can give you is avoid this movie, it will only make you angry for wasting almost two hours of your life on it and life is too short! If you feel the need to see it, look out for the original!

Benefits this year come from sharing experiences with others, especially in new environments. Travel is highlighted maybe in connection with work. Property matters may take until March to be resolved but have patience as the wait could prove beneficial in the long run. Contracts will be lucrative and profitable by April and there is a lot of progress in the career arena. There is an opportunity to meet someone special this year perhaps through a cultural experience. Even those of you who are not looking for a partner could find yourselves enamoured. This is the year when the written word or public presentations will bring you abundance and prosperity. The work you have been doing behind the scenes finds its way out into the world around April and with it your social popularity increases. July sees you focusing upon relationships and the changes that have occurred lead to a feeling of stability that increases your optimism for commitment on your part. Responsibilities are heightened in property and real estate, whether it be buying or selling, property maintenance and improvements. New career opportunities are on the horizon and you could explore a whole new field of expertise. Make sure you are ‘on the ball’ when it comes to understanding the latest technology, especially around June, this will help you to put your best foot forward. There is also a chance for radical changes on the domestic and family front around the end of May. A lot of the conflict within relationships that caused stress and tension in 2010 has finally come to an end and 2011 promises an increase in harmony on this level. Having Saturn walking hand and hand with you for so such a long time has taught you that there are no quick routes to success. There is still a need to hang in there for the results, this can take up to July to manifest but when it does you will feel like you can take the ‘L’ plates off. This year is a time of planning and consolidation. Important decisions regarding relationships are likely to occur in the summer and there could be an increase in resource sharing. The home base could become a kind of educational facility where you are able to share ideas with others. Be wary of placing too much faith in others as far as money is concerned. Financial rewards come to you from communicating with others, or passing your knowledge on in some way. You may decide to formalise a relationship by the end of July as there is a deep call from within to settle down and lay to rest lingering doubts. You are on a high learning curve and may return to higher education or take up the study of something that has interested you for a while. Computers and the internet could become central to your daily work routines. Lately you have been encouraged to become more independent and 2011 builds on this. Your social connections increase and at times you will become inundated with invitations. Remain flexible and adaptable within relationships and there should not be too many changes here. An unusual or a specialist subject fascinates you and there is the possibility of you exploring this further. There has been a burst of self-knowledge that is giving you clues into the potential that lies within you. This is the year to put this theory into practice.
LIBRA
You are moving onto greener pastures, a new direction, a fresh start awaits you. The latter part of 2010 was spent finalising or completing something to make way for a new direction. There are still obligations to attend to and duties that need to be carried out but there is light at the end of this tunnel. There are challenges on the relationship front in January and again in the middle of the year, these occur to iron out any niggles September 23rd - that have been building up, probably due to increased responsibilities and pressure. nd October 22 Once the air has been cleared there is a period of tranquillity for the rest of the year.
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
You may find that you spend more time alone for the first part of the year, this is a good thing as you need rest and respite and a chance to ‘know thyself’. There is more activity in the last part of the year when your social reputation increases. Your relationships may have run hot and cold but after April there is increased clarity and consolidation. Children could play an important role this year. For the single Scorpios the chance of attracting a partner of a like mind is high, with the end of November being a month where your magnetic charm excels.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
Savoury Cheddar-Chive Bread Ingredients:
- makes 8 servings -
● 210gr all-purpose flour ● 1 tablespoon baking powder ● 1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt (it depends on what cheese and add-ins you're using) ● 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper ● 3 large eggs, at room temperature ● 3 fluid ounces whole milk, at room temperature ● 3 fluid ounces extra-virgin olive oil ● 85gr coarsely grated cheddar or other cheese ● 55gr cheddar or other cheese, cut into very small cubes ● 75gr minced chives or other herbs ● 50gr toasted walnuts, chopped (optional) GETTING READY: Centre a rack in the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F. Generously butter an 8 x 4½ x 2¾ inch loaf pan. If your pan is larger (probably 9 x 5 x 2¾ inch), go ahead and use it—your cake will be lower and you'll have to check it for doneness a little earlier
Directions ● Put the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl and whisk the ingredients together to combine. ● Put the eggs in another mixing bowl; whisk for about 1 minute, until they're foamy and blended. Whisk in the milk and olive oil. ● Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and, using a sturdy rubber spatula or a wooden spoon, gently mix until the dough comes together. There's not need to be energetic—beating the dough toughens it—nor do you need to be very thorough. Just stir until all the dry ingredients are moistened. Now, stir in the cheese, grated and cubed, the herbs and the toasted walnuts, if you're using them. You'll have a thick dough. Turn the dough into the buttered pan
and even the top with the back of the spatula or spoon. ● Slide the pan into the oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the bread is golden and a slender knife inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a cooling rack, wait about 3 minutes, then run a knife around the sides of the pan and turn the loaf over onto the rack; invert and cool to room temperature right-side up. ● The loaf can be served when it is still slightly warm or when it has cooled completely. If you'd like, you can wrap the room temperature cake in plastic film and wait a few hours or overnight to serve it. Slice the bread about half an inch thick and cut the slices into strips or cubes.
SAGITTARIUS Facing some inevitability has been a challenge for you in 2010 and you may have felt like a prisoner of fate at times, however this is all about to change. A team setting gives you invaluable support and this may come in the form of a social network or through your daily work. New associations can appear out of the blue and friendships will be rewarding. There could be a major overhaul at work nd November 22 - with the potential of relocating. Your financial situation should improve from st December 21 July; however, this is dependent on your use of funds and spending practices.
CAPRICORN Important home or career changes can occur around the eclipses in April and then October. Jupiter will also be influencing your career and this is the time when you have the opportunity to shine. Long term planning will be important to you and for some this could even entail a property investment before the year is out. This year is all about going forward with those that you trust, you December 22nd are getting serious about who you wish to take on your life’s journey, there is a January 19th formalisation process going on which could lead to marriage for some.

Breaking out of a rut and exploring new situations and a different way of living is on the cards. There will be many opportunities to increase your connections via travel and groups. It is important not to take anything for granted right now. You will want promises to be met and will have little time for those that do not pull their weight or keep to commitments. This year brings you the potential to find a real soul mate and love blooms for many. Finances tend to be up and down and you may develop a sideline to bring in some extra cash. Doing your own thing, daring to be different and breaking the chains of conformity is what 2011 brings. A change to routine by taking a holiday or going somewhere completely different is being asked of you. It is all about spicing up your life. New acquaintances modernise your outlook, exciting opportunities fall at your feet. Benefits through investments or business plans manifest in August and then again in November. Everything you have sown in the past comes to fruition allowing you to sit back and enjoy your harvest.
Courgette and Parmesan Soup Ingredients: ● 1kg green courgette cut lengthways into quarters then into 1cm chunks. ● 60ml extra virgin olive oil ● 15g garlic cloves, chopped ● 750ml chicken stock ● 60ml single cream ● A few Basil leaves, chopped ● Parsley, chopped ● 50 g freshly grated Parmesan (Reggiano is best) ● Sea salt and ground white pepper, to taste.
Directions ● Heat the oil in a heavy based pan ● Cook the garlic, basil, salt and courgette slowly for approx 10 minutes until the courgettes are lightly browned and very soft. ●Add some pepper and stock and simmer for 8 minutes, uncovered. Remove from the heat.
●Put ¾ of the soup into a food processor and process until smooth. If you don’t have a processor, you could put most of the mixture through a sieve. ●Return to the pan with the remainder of the soup and stir in the cream, parsley and parmesan.

Do herbs really work?
Humming can ease sinus problems
Despite all the folk wisdom promoting the use of such plants as St. John's wort and black cohosh, not much is known about their effect on human health. The US government has awarded more than $250 million so far to carry out research into the safety and efficacy of health products made from the stems, seeds, leaves, bark and flowers of plants. In the US alone, people spent more than $5 billion on herbal and botanical dietary supplements in 2009, up 22% from a decade before. This has caused concern among doctors and health researchers about the purity and consistency of
supplements, which are not regulated as strictly as pharmaceutical drugs.
while others were tainted by pesticides or heavy metals.
A spokesman for ConsumerLab.com, which tests supplement brands for quality, said that one out of four of the dietary supplements qualitytested over the last 11 years had failed and the failure rate increased to 55% when considering botanical products alone. He said some products contained less than the promoted amount of the supplement in question
In addition, he said, a valid herbal supplement may not be as effective when taken as a pill or capsule rather than used in the manner of a folk remedy. For example, a herb normally ground into paste as part of a ceremony might lose its effectiveness if prepared using modern manufacturing methods.
Older people miss skin cancer signs Deaths from melanoma among the over 65s have tripled in the past 30 years, according to the East of England Cancer Registry. This is because older people are less likely to get skin changes checked by a doctor and are more likely to be diagnosed when the cancer has spread. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and is linked to cumulative sun exposure over a lifetime, which means that the over-65s are more likely to develop the disease in the first place. However, unlike younger people, the registry data reveals that the classic signs of a cancerous mole are being overlooked among a host of other changes to older skin. This means that by the time the mole cannot be ignored, the cancer is likely to be at a more advanced stage, making it far harder to treat. A spokeswoman for Cancer
Research UK’s "Sunsmart" campaign, said that while summer may be over, the damage to skin cells from sunburn can remain long after the redness fades. She highlighted the classic
Researchers also are concerned about the lack of evidence to support the health benefits said to be gained from herbal supplements. Misusing them can lead to poor health and potential interactions with prescription drugs. Despite the medical community’s concerns, researchers believe there are a lot of valid health benefits to be derived from botanical supplements. These benefits just need to be proven in the lab.
Paying the price for longer life People are living longer, but those extra years are more likely to be a time of disease and disability. A recent analysis of US government data found that while life expectancy has steadily increased over the past decade, the prevalence of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes has also increased, and disability has grown as well. In 1998 about 16% of men in their 70s had a mobility problem - that is, they failed one of four commonly used tests - that was up to 25% by 2006, Researchers concluded that people lived longerbecause they survived longer with disease.

Two recent studies indicate that humming may ease sinus infections, which generally occur when the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed, trapping air and pus and other secretions, and leading to pain, headaches and congestion.
people when they hummed and when they quietly exhaled. Specifically, they looked to see if humming led to greater levels of exhaled nitric oxide, a gas produced in the sinuses. Ultimately, nitric oxides during humming rose 15-fold.
Because the inflammation is often caused by upperrespiratory infections, people with asthma and allergies are more vulnerable than others to chronic sinusitis.
In the other study, researchers found a similar effect: humming resulted in a large increase in nasal nitric oxide, “caused by a rapid gas exchange in the paranasal sinuses.”
Keeping the sinuses healthy and infection-free requires ventilation, that is, keeping air flowing smoothly between the sinus and nasal cavities. In one study, researchers examined this by comparing airflow in
Since reduced airflow plays a major role in sinus infections, the researchers suggested that daily periods of humming might help people lower their risk of chronic problems, but stressed that further study is needed.

FASHION SPOT
Iconic landmark preserved for posterity
by Lauren Yanoi Dearden
our Costa student fashionista on the red carpet
This year marks the 50th anniversary since Brian Epstein discovered The Beatles – and the group are as influential now as they ever were, as their remastered CDs stake spots in the album charts.
Naomi ends year on a high note Well, 2010 was a fantastic year for a young student like me immersing herself in the world of fashion, and I can´t wait to see what this next year will bring. My highlight has to be the recent British Fashion Awards – for this fledgling fashionista it was utter joy to be handed my personal equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket – two passes for me and another fashion student friend to attend this glittering ceremony. We went the whole hog – well, as far as we could on a student budget! So that meant acquiring a less than real glowing tan (at times like this I miss the Costa sun), spending hours on hair and make-up and donning full length gowns for the black tie event. Sadly we could not run to a stretch limo so had to make our way on several connecting tube trains into central London – classy! But once we stepped onto the red-carpet at the Savoy Theatre – yes, really! – all that was forgotten as, with glass of fizz in hand we mingled with some of the best known faces in the industry we both intend to join. As we took our seats on the front row of the upper circle we leaned over and were barely able to contain our excitement as the likes of Victoria Beckham, Claudia Schiffer and Alexa Chung took their own seats below- high marks to host Claudia Winkleman who entertained with jokes and maintained a light hearted atmosphere which kept us well away from anything too serious or self-indulgent –for which the industry has, perhaps unfairly, earned a reputation over the years.
the Special Recognition Award which went to Naomi Campbell, who was honoured for her influence upon and contribution to the fashion industry over the past 25 years. She has had a mixed 2010 – what with blood diamonds and court hearings and more gossip about her highhandedness. But the notoriously fiery model could not have given a more humble speech, with her focus entirely on her charity work and Nelson Mandela as her inspiration. She looked sensational, in a custom made gown designed by the late Alexander McQueen, who was of course given a posthumous award for Outstanding Achievement. So, my most enjoyable insight into the fashion industry so far which showed that it’s not only a world full of superbly talented individuals but also people who continue to work hard and apply great effort to continue to be successful. It will inspire me to redouble my studying efforts!
Corrie wedding bells The outrageous Kylie has already “sold” her son Max to Becky and Steve and has been back for more cash, causing Becky to rob the Alahan corner shop safe in the aftermath of the recent tram crash. And now she is set to come back from a holiday in Tenerife engaged to be married - to none other than Corrie bad boy David
The 1969 album was the last to be recorded by The Beatles and its cover
sparked conspiracy theories at the time that Paul McCartney, pictured barefoot, had died and a lookalike had been used in the photoshoot. For 40th anniversary of the photoshoot on August 8th last year, hundreds staged their own shoots, causing traffic chaos. English Heritage officials say that the crossing has international renown and huge cultural pull. Now housing minister Grant Shapps has sent a new year request to Liverpool city council calling for a halt on demolition plans which would see the house where
drummer Ringo Starr was born torn down as part of a regeneration project. He has asked for a temporary reprieve for 9 Medryn Street in the Dingle to give Save Britain s Heritage more time to make a case for saving the house as a culturally important building. Ringo, born Richard Starkey, lived in the house until he was three months old. Nearby 10 Admiral Grove, where the ex-Beatle lived for 20 years, is to remain and the childhood homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney are protected by the National Trust. George Harrison s childhood home remains a private house.
Cost of Christmas blunders mounts up
There was the usual spread of awards – Phoebe Philo of “Celine” won Designer of The Year and Lara Stone was Model of The Year. But for me the most memorable was
Viewers of Coronation Street can expect a new rollercoaster ride of drama in the Spring. Newcomer Paula Lane, who plays Becky McDonald’s wayward, self-centred sister Kylie, said in a surprise announcement on ITV’s Loose Women on Tuesday that she will soon be hearing the sound of wedding bells.
And the day before Christmas came the news that a humble zebra crossing that is part of Beatle history, has been given official recognition. Over the years thousands of tourists and fans have recreated the cover of the Beatles Abbey Road LP by walking in single file across the crossing – which has now been given Grade II listed status by heritage minister John Penrose. The Abbey Road studios, where the Beatles did much of their recording, were listed last February.
Platt. David’s family will be stunned by the news and a Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed after the actress’s Loose Women appearance that the plot will allow for fireworks as the troubled twosome wreak havoc in the street. Poor old Gail will things never go right for her? And what will happen to Max?
Post Christmas we will be counting the cost of presents destined to stay in the cupboard before ending up in the charity shop or on the car boot stall. A survey has revealed the least liked or used gifts. Top is the breadmaker more than a third of people who got one as a present are likely to hardly use it. The next least used items were sandwich toasters and coffee makers and the
lean and mean grill form of cooker has also taken a big tumble in popularity stakes. Other items that leave recipients less shaken and stirred include blenders, footspas, electric sudoku games and digital photoframes and it all adds up to a cool £1 billion spent on unwanted presents. Best stick to trusties like new mobile phones or games and DVDs in future!

Hotmail e-mails 'missing' from accounts
Net generation hit by deprivation It’s official - depriving the ‘net generation’ of their computers, mobile phones,iPods and television and radio can lead to a physical and psychological reaction. Switching off phones, and not logging onto the internet can lead to the sort of reaction seen in addicts trying to kick a habit, researchers say.
discovered that they responded like people trying to give up smoking showing side effects of stress and anxiety and physical fidgeting.
Scientists asked volunteers to avoid emails, text messages, Facebook and Twitter, and music and telly for 24 hours, and
Some volunteers said they felt they were undergoing “cold turkey” to break a drug habit and others felt as miserable as if starting a
new diet. Researchers have called it Information Deprivation Disorder. The findings will reinforce concerns raised by psychologists about the impact of excessive use of the internet, games and social networking sites on teenagers and young adults - the so-called ‘net generation’.
A number of people with Hotmail accounts have posted complaints on Microsoft forums complaining that their e-mails have been deleted. Users around the world said e-mails were missing from their inbox and other folders within their Hotmail accounts.
A spokeswoman for Microsoft said that the issue of missing e-mails was not a widespread problem.
By Sunday evening the issue was "fully resolved", she said. The company apologised for any inconvenience.

Retired couple’s MOT scam A retired couple are being investigated over a £1million MOT scam that kept thousands of faulty vehicles on the road. Seamus and Paula Montgomery allegedly posted certificates to owners without their vehicles ever going through the mandatory tests. They are suspected of issuing at least 1,000 MOT documents a year, charging around £200 a time. Police believe the scam has been running for at least five years, potentially producing a £1million profit. Pictured is the couple’s Mercedes and caravan park.
New bike stunt Renault retain Vitaly Petrov video released Russia’s first Formula 1 driver is handed a two season retainer. Danny MacAskill, who shot to fame after putting footage of his cycle stunts online, has a new video. The video shows the cyclist riding across Scotland to his hometown of Dunvegan in the Isle of Skye. Travelling with his friend and filmmaker Dave Sowerby, MacAskill performs stunts at

Petrov will drive alongside Robert Kubica and the new deal means Petrov is on target to stay in F1 when Russia stages its first grand prix in 2014. The 26-yearold's future had been in doubt after an inconsistent debut season for Renault in 2010. "It feels great," said Petrov. "I learned so much this year and I can come back stronger. I'm determined to repay the faith they have shown in me." Petrov finished 13th in his debut season and rates Hungary as his "best weekend" when he finished fifth from seventh on the grid. The Russian rookie also memorably held up Ferrari's Fernando Alonso for much of the

final race of the season in Abu Dhabi when the Spaniard desperately needed to move through the field to challenge for the title. "We are very pleased to confirm that Vitaly will be staying with us in order that both he and the team can build on a promising 2010 campaign," commented team boss Eric
Boullier. "There were times this year when I made mistakes and lost points, and I know this is where I can improve," said Petrov, Petrov, who is the first Russian F1 driver, is already looking forward to his second season when he will have to adapt to 2011's rule changes. "In many ways, 2010 was
"I've already seen the new car in the wind tunnel and it looks very promising. I also love our new colours and can't wait to get back in the car and go racing. My objective is to continue improving as a driver and to become more consistent,” he said. Renault's driver line-up is, in theory, settled until the end of 2012 as the highly rated Kubica also penned a new two-year deal with Renault in the summer.

Talking about his experience of riding from Edinburgh to Skye, MacAskill said: “My favourite spot in the riding clip is probably the bakery wall ride in my local village. I found it by walking out of the bakery with a big pasty. And then I saw the grass bank and the wall and thought I could maybe jump up there one day. “One of the hardest tricks in the film was probably the front flip off Edinburgh Castle as it was
than 21 million times. As a result the 25-year-old appeared in a TV ad for the new Volkswagen Golf Estate, a video of the Doves’ single Winter Hill and a New York Times feature. One of the things that has endeared him to the public is his sheer modesty. On the subject of the latest video, he said: “I still can't believe the first video reached so many people that actually liked it and passed it on. I mean, even Lance Armstrong thought it was a must see! Now I get to make another, even crazier video and basically ride my bike as a job. It doesn't get any better than this.”
What a way to spend Christmas A grandfather who fell victim to the airport snow chaos after dropping his wife off at Gatwick airport spent three days lost on the M4 trying to find his way back to Wiltshire. The 72-year-old man was eventually found on Christmas Day, still at the wheel of his Peugeot 307, when he triggered a police camera and was flagged down by officers. Disorientated Mohammed

Bellazrak’s worried family reported him missing to the police. Police in Wiltshire asked colleagues in neighbouring forces to keep an eye open for the Moroccan-born motorist, after he vanished on December 23rd. CCTV footage showed him leaving Gatwick airport at 8pm on Thursday but there the trail ran cold. That was until officers in the Thames Valley

Bellazrak's ordeal finally ended at 2pm on Christmas Day when his car number plate activated an ANPR camera in a Thames Valley Police patrol car in Abingdon Road, Oxford - and this time officers were able to flag him down.

G-Mac honoured in New Year list, as Monty wins BBC Coach of the year Graeme McDowell joined world cup referee Howard Webb in being honoured with the MBE. Also in the sporting world Mike Catt, the muchcapped England rugby union player who finally hung up his boots last May at the age of 38, received an OBE. McDowell ended a superb year with an all time high when his achievements were recognised in the form of the the New Year’s Honours List. The 31-yearold, from Northern Ireland, received an MBE after an outstanding season in which he became the first European Golfer in 40 years to win the US Open Championship at Pebble Beach and to secure a great win for Europe in the 2010 Ryder Cup held at Celtic Manor in Wales. "It is a huge honour for me to be included on the New Year Honours List," said McDowell. "For my achievements as a professional golfer to be recognised in this way is truly special. Both myself and my family are very proud of this unique acknowledgement." McDowell was also joint winner of The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the year title, along with Germany’s Martin Kaymer, and was also winner of the annual awards from the Association of Golf Writers, the Golf Writers’ Association of America,
players and coaches, who got us prepared just that bit better than the opposition." Montgomerie went on to say: "It was a fantastic year for European golf, we've never been in ruder health, I'm privileged to be here to receive this on behalf of the European Tour." Graeme McDowell holds the Ryder Cup aloft
and the Irish Golf Writers. And as if that wasn’t enough for McDowell, he was a candidate for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and although he did not make it to the top three, he did have success with another key television award when he was named RTE Sportsperson of the Year in Ireland. It was an incredible year for the pro, nicknamed GMac, as he ended 2010 as the number six golfer in the world with a host of awards under his belt. Colin Montgomerie also had plenty to smile about during the festivities as he scooped the BBC Sports Personality Coach of the
Year award, giving Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, and England cricket coach Andy Flower, a run for their money. Montgomerie enjoyed a great victory at Celtic Manor last October when Europe won the Ryder cup with a score of 14 ½ – 13 ½ over the United States. Although not strictly a coach, Montgomerie was recognised for his efforts in getting the best out of his team as they hit back after a trail of 6 -4 with a lead of 9 ½ - 6 ½ ahead of the singles. He told reporters: "It is an honour to be here again and receive this award on behalf of 12 fantastic
Battling start to the new year as Malaga get three vital away points Sporting Gijon 1 - 2 Malaga With none of Malaga's new signings available, Pellegrini sent out the strongest side he had available, including the return of Apono in midfield. There was little to separate the two sides in the opening period and there was precious little
goalmouth incident aside from the two goals just before the interval. The deadlock was broken when Malaga’s Mtiliga was rather harshly penalised for handling inside the area and Castro stepped up to drive the resulting spotkick into the top right hand corner of the net past Arnau. later though Malaga were back on level terms. Duda curled in a free kick from the left and Weligton got to the ball ahead of the Sporting defence to glance a shot past Cuellar. A great finish from a central defender.
It was a great finish to a superb golf season for many top players, and the good news is, it all starts again as we now enter into 2011! In other sports there were also MBEs for Ray French, the 71-year-old commentator known as the 'voice of rugby league', Jimmy McIlroy, one of the greats of Northern Ireland football, and Manchester United, while George Kerr, a 72-year-old from Edinburgh, who in February became one of only 19 people since 1935 and only the second Briton to have achieved the status of 10th Dan in judo, recieved a CBE. to net what would prove to be the winning goal. Cuellar`s foul on Eliseu inside the box earned Malaga the chance and Apono fired his penalty down the centre of the goal. Rondon then went close but missed a chance to make it three, but Malaga held on to claim a massive three points to lift themselves out of the bottom three. Next up is the return leg of the Copa Del Rey against Sevilla, kicking off tonight (Wed 5th) at 6pm and back to the league on Saturday with another home game against Athletic Bilbao at 6pm.
PDC darts title for Lewis represents Lewis's first major title and pushed him up to second in the world rankings behind Phil Taylor. Lewis, who takes home £200,000 for the win, becomes just the fifth player to be crowned champion since the inception of the PDC event in 1994. Anderson, the favourite going into the final, praised Lewis.
Adrian 'Jackpot' Lewis survived a late fightback by Gary Anderson to defeat the Scot 7-5 and be crowned PDC world champion for the first time. Lewis, 25, was never behind in the contest and hit a stunning nine-dart finish in the opening set, the first man to achieve it in a world final. Lewis, who is nicknamed Jackpot after missing out on a $75,000 casino pot in 2005 because he was under-age for US gaming laws, clinched a brilliant win.
"He played absolutely brilliant," said the runnerup, who automatically qualifies for next month's Premier League event. "He is a great talent." Fifteen-time world darts champion Phil 'The Power' Taylor, who was knocked out in the quarter-finals, said: "I've got a lump in my throat. I'm very very proud of Adrian."
"I think I deserve it," he said. "I need to push on from this." The win

Blackburn have tabled an astonishing £20million offer for Brazil legend Ronaldinho after also making an ambitious loan move for David Beckham. The forward - who has been told he can leave AC Milan - is being offered the chance to join ambitious Rovers. Despite the jaw-dropping offer, Ronaldinho remains likely to snub the Barclays Premier League in favour of a move back to his homeland. The offer ‘is 7.6m euros (£6.5m) for the first year and about 8.5m euros (£7.2m) for the second and third years.

Prince Harry made a surprise visit to London’s Alexandra Palace at the weekend to watch the semi-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship. Accompanied by former England rugby player Will Greenwood, Harry watched Adrian Lewis defeat Mark Webster 6-4 and Gary Anderson overcome Terry Jenkins 6-2. Clarence House later confirmed the prince had been invited to the semifinals as a guest and appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the occasion, laughing and joking with the rest of his party.
Rafael Nadal started 2011 with a straight sets win over Roger Federer in Abu Dhabi. The Spaniard needed two tie-breakers to win 7-6, 7-6 and defend his title at the invitational World Tennis Championships. “Rafael and myself must have played so many times and so many times it has come down to a few shots here and there. He is an amazing shot-maker. Me as well but today he got the better of me,” said the Swiss player.

Don’t pick him! Former hero Davies urges Wales to snub Gavin Henson Jonathan Davies, the former Wales fly-half turned pundit, has led the criticism of Gavin Henson following his stuttering start for Saracens after an 18month lay-off. The centre has been widely tipped for Wales’s Six Nations squad later this month, but Davies has questioned the wisdom of a recall. “Henson doesn’t deserve to be anywhere near the squad and I think everyone is fed up with it,” Davies said after Henson played 53 minutes of Sunday’s 28-22 defeat at Sale.

‘Wolfie’ Adams still on course for 3rd Martin Adams remains on course for a hat-trick of BDO Lakeside World Darts titles after a thrilling sudden death success over John Walton on Monday night. The defending champion and number one seed from Deeping prevailed 4-3 over his England team mate at Frimley Green. Walton went ahead in the decider only for Adams to level with a 106 checkout, and at 5-5 the match went to a sudden death final leg. 2001 winner Walton hit the bull, winning the right to throw first, but Adams kept pace and nailed a nail-biting victory on double 18. He will now face Ross Smith in the third round.
