Ceasefire offer fails key tests Three hooded members of the Basque terrorist group ETA announced "a permanent and general ceasefire which will be verifiable by the international community" on a video released on Tuesday morning but made no mention of handing over weapons and the announcement was rejected by the government and others. In summary: it's an ETA that displays the same arrogance as always, plus the usual discourse." Sr Rubalcaba said the government would continue to demand an unconditional surrender. He told reporters: “If you ask me whether I am more relaxed today than yesterday, honestly I would say yes. If you ask if this is the end, no. Is this what Spanish society expected? Clearly no.”
Last September, the government rejected a less explicit cease-fire declaration because ETA, which is considered a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States, had not offered to hand over weapons or said the ceasefire was permanent At Monday's televised press conference, Sr Rubalcaba also rejected ETA’s call for outside intervention. In his capacity as interior minister, deputy PM Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told a press conference immediately after the video was released: "From reading their statement, we can see that we are dealing with an ETA that has the same aims as always.” He went on: "It's an ETA that has a distorted view of reality, that has a list of demands that it's not abandoning.

The requirement to disarm is a key demand from the government – the “etarras” also said ETA would continue its "indefatigable struggle" for a "truly democratic situation in the Basque Country". ETA has broken ceasefires several times in the past. In 2006 the truce was ended by a bomb attack on the car park at Madrid airport, in which 2 men died.

WORLD Rotten roads! Guardia arrested two ETA suspects after ceasefire announcement
continued from FRONT PAGE
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
The recent weather saw the hill to our house turn into a pudding which had to be dug up and have rubble and stones put back in the hole that will allow the run off of rainwater from the surrounding hills to filter through it so thanks to Wayne and Paul for doing a super job which allows me to get to work! The main roads into the la carreta area of coin, despite pleas to the Mayor from residents and letters in the British press, remain unrepaired and are getting worse. It is now impossible to drive along without causing damage to your car. The potholes are so big that it doesn't matter how slowly you are driving one of your four wheels are going to be down a hole and the whole road system is extremely damgerous, especially at night. My own car has to go back into the garage, yet again, for repairs due to damage done by the road – maybe they'd like to pay for them? The residents have paid out time and again for repairs to what is actually a public road and are getting heartily sick of the lack of any interest from the Town Hall of coin. Perhaps they would like to do the necessary repairs forthwith. On the uK news page you can read about a teacher who has been sacked for allowing his pupils to use a Scandinavian sledge on snow in the school grounds. no-one was hurt but he failed to get permission in writing from the school governors. Absolutely barking!
Ceasefire offer fails key tests
Bargain hunters fight was set up The start of the January sales is nearly always the first story on TV news broadcasts – probably because real news stories are thin on the ground between Christmas and Three Kings on January 6th – so it came as no surprise that the sight of two women grappling over a bargain at El Corte Ingles in Madrid was taken seriously by at least one national newspaper. However, it turned out that
the incident between a blonde and a redhead was staged by actress Yolanda Dominguez. She explained in her blog how she had prepared the scene for two months, with two actresses and a photographer and herself. She said she had wanted to do something about female rivalry and what better scenario than the January sales where “there is a degree of competitiveness, implicitly if not explicitly”.
One such specialist said police and judicial efforts had pushed ETA to a high level of despair and disorganization, so there was no reason for the government to change tack and allow negotiations that would risk giving ETA renewed vigour and a greater sense of legitimacy. He said Monday's statement showed that ETA had not given up the idea of imposing its own independence project which, he said, was completely unacceptable. ETA was formed in 1959 with the objective of establishing an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwestern France. Since 1969, it has killed more than 850 people.
And the best sales are held at the famous department store. But she had to make up a script that had nothing to do with the sales – one of the actresses was apparently attacking the other one for stealing her job – because Spanish women are rarely caught fighting over sales bargains. They’re simply too well brought up to sink to that level.
Moratinos looks to FAO Former foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos presented his application for the job of Director General of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on Tuesday, telling reporters that he wanted to eradicate poverty and hunger throughout the world. Speaking to them in the Spanish embassy in Rome,
Sr Moratinos said he was confident of getting the job because his six years as foreign minister had given him a lot of experience in that area of the world’s problems. Sr Moratinos is competing for the post with an Iraqi, an Indonesian and Brazilian Jose Graziano Da Silva, who is apparently the favourite with the 182

Reactions Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said in a televised interview that ETA's announcement of a ceasefire did not go far enough. He said what the government wanted was the “definitive end” of ETA. Former defence minister and speaker José Bono said on television
Undaunted, Sr Moratinos said that as FAO’s director general his two main objectives would be eradicating poverty and hunger which was not a dream because the developed countries had the means to do so, and putting an end to speculation with the prices of agricultural products.

that the cease-fire offer was “more of the same.” He added: “To hear talk about political negotiations from people who have killed so many politicians can only produce in me uneasiness and sadness.” Partido Popular spokeswoman Maria Dolores de Cospedal noted that ETA had not asked its victims for forgiveness or repented of its crimes. Rosa Diez (Union, Progreso y Democracia) called the announcement “a joke” and said ETA only wanted to use the democratic process to achieve its old ends. Spokesmen for the United Police Syndicate and the Unified Association of the Guardia Civil said there was “nothing new” in the announcement.
Business as usual As if to underline the general disenchantment with ETA's ceasefire offer, the Guardia Civil arrested two people in Zarautz and Ciboure in Guipuzcoa province on Tuesday who were suspected of training ETA terrorists in Venezuela.

National News Government may help people kick the habit Health Minister Leire Pajin has said she favours exploring the possibility of helping people to give up smoking by supplying the necessary drugs either free or at a very low cost. She sad duirng a radio interview that she knows how difficult it is to kick the habit, having done so herself when the original anti-smoking law came into force in 2005. She advised people in the same situation to let themselves be helped by the professionals “because that's what they're for”. She said as far as she could see, the tougher version of the law which came into force on January 2nd was being observed with very few exceptions.

State television RTVE announced last week that it had decided to stop transmitting bullfights because of the high cost of the screening rights. RTVE had stopped showing bullfights live years ago because they are usually held at times when children could be watching television. Parliament recently debated a proposal presented by the Partido Popular for the transmission of 10 bullfights a year but it was defeated by one vote. RTVE has not shown a bullfight since 2006.

Socialists agree with opposition leader A recent survey of people who voted for the Socialist Party in the last general election showed that 55% want Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to call an early election, something opposition leader Mariano Rajoy has been demanding for months now. A similar number said the Socialist Party stood a better chance of winning the next election if Sr Zapatero stepped down, something Sr Rajoy has been asking him to do since June. However their preference for Deputy prime minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba to succeed him is not shared by Sr Rajoy, who sees Sr Rubalcaba as his most dangerous rival.

Others include exports of Spanish products, such as cured ham and olive oil, reflecting the Chinese population's growing interest in Western-style food. China's official Xinhua news agency
reported Mr Li as saying: "We will buy more Spanish government bonds depending on market conditions." His comments on Spanish government bonds were welcomed by those hoping that 2011 will not see a break-up of the eurozone. Mr Li was at the start of a European tour that took him to Germany
and the UK. China has the largest amount of foreign currency reserves in the world. Amnesty International criticised the government for not bringing up the matter of human rights during Mr Li's visit. AI spokesman Alfred Cerdán said there were serious violations of human rights
in China which included the execution of thousands of people every year, censoring of the internet and the media as well as stopping Nobel Peace prize winner Liu Xiaobo from collecting the award but Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero “is more interested in signing trade agreements”.

Judge Fernando Andreu has opened a probe into a raid by Iraqi security forces on a camp housing an Iranian exile group in July 2009 which left 11 people dead. He is to decide whether crimes against humanity were committed when the troops took control of the camp in Diyala province. The judge said the Geneva Convention applied to the case, as it addressed the protection of civilians in wartime. He believed that Iraq was not investigating the incident properly. He has summoned Diyala's police chief, Gen Abdul Hussein alShemmari, to Madrid to answer questions. He is accused of directing the attack on Camp Ashraf, where more than 3,000 members of the banned opposition group, the People's Mujahideen of Iran (PMOI), had been confined by the US military since the invasion in 2003. The
complaint filed by Spanish human rights lawyers on behalf of relatives of the victims alleges that police and soldiers shot and beat unarmed residents of the camp so they could clear a space to build a police station there. The US military was not notified of the operation. Gen Shemmari has denied any involvement and Iraqi officials have blamed the exiles for the violence, saying they threw stones and petrol bombs. The PMOI is considered a terrorist group by the US and Iran. It set up Camp Ashraf in Iraq in the 1980s and was welcomed by then-President Saddam Hussein, who was fighting a war against Iran. The PMOI's military wing fought alongside Iraqi soldiers. Under Spain's universal justice doctrine, grave crimes committed in other countries can be prosecuted.

Less than a year after Christian Barnard performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant in South Africa, Franco's son-in-law, Cristóbal Martínez Bordiú, tried to repeat the feat in September 1968. The positive coverage of Barnard's operation had given South Africa's apartheid regime a rare boost and after nearly three decades in power the Franco regime needed one too. Neither patient survived the operation for long: Barnard's lived for 18 days, and Martínez Bordiú's, a plumber named Juan Rodríguez Grillé, survived for just 27 hours. Rodríguez Grillé's daughter has now taken legal action against the Martínez Bordiú-Franco family for failing to keep a promise the surgeon - who died in 1998 - made to provide for her and her mother if her father died. María Jesús Rodríguez Boga said her father knew he was going to die and gave his life for the family.
Her mother, who is still alive, and the rest of her family were against the heart transplant, as was the family of the donor. Her father had been admitted to La Paz hospital in Madrid with chronic gall bladder and liver problems and Rodríguez Boga said her family were pressured into allowing the transplant. At the news conference after the death of Rodríguez Grillé, Martínez Bordiú
said the Labour Ministry would keep its promise to look after the family but the ministry had not contacted the family more than a year after Rodríguez Grillé's death. Rodríguez Boga said her mother wrote to the ministry reminding it of the promise made to the family but got no reply. Rodríguez Boga has now begun legal proceedings against the descendants of Martínez Bordiú.

Odyssey has claimed that the leaked cables show that the American ambassador offered to help Spain in the fight over the sunken treasure if the government persuaded a Madrid museum to return the 1897 Pissarro painting to a
California family that says it was illegally taken by Nazis in Germany. In the fight with Spain over the treasure in the US Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and the Justice Department have weighed in to support Spain’s claim. Odyssey has alleged that the federal government had a secret motive for getting involved in the case, and last Wednesday, its lawyers filed a motion asking the court to require the government to note its interests in the case. Odyssey’s chief executive, Greg Stemm said the company was concerned about the evidence available in the leaked
cables: “They are opening a window into the inner workings of international diplomacy for the general public, and it isn’t always pretty.” A State Department spokesman declined to comment but a New York lawyer representing Spain in the painting case has denied there was a secret

Brazil warns of trade war
Police evacuate parts of Brisbane
Brazil’s finance minister Guido Mantega has warned that the world is on course for a trade war because of currency manipulation by China, the US and others. In his first major interview since Dilma Rousseff took office as Brazil's new president on January 1st, Mr Mantega said there is a currency war which is turning into a trade war. He added that China's "undervalued currency" was also distorting world trade. In September last year, he accused some rich countries of deliberately devaluing their currencies to boost exports and make their economies more competitive.
Police urged people to evacuate parts of Australia's third largest city - Brisbane - as huge floods approached the Queensland state capital on Tuesday. The city's mayor, Campbell Newman, warned that 6,500 homes, businesses and other properties were likely to be flooded by Thursday. The state is suffering its worst floods in decades. In Toowoomba, just west of Brisbane, nine people died when a raging torrent of water hit the town without warning on Monday, following more than 36 hours of incessant rain. At least 70 people are missing.
A huge rescue operation was mounted as many residents clung to trees or railings or were trapped in cars or on the roofs of buildings. At least four of the dead were children and two of them died in a car with their mother. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has warned that the death toll is likely to rise. State Premier Anna Bligh called the flash floods Queensland's "darkest hour" since the floods began
at the end of November. Some 200,000 people have been affected across the state, and billions of dollars worth of damage has been caused. The flooding has been so widespread that while some communities are still bracing themselves for the worst, in others the clean-up is under way. The forecast is for more rain to come, and there are reports of flooding in neighbouring New South Wales.

He was also charged with the first degree murder of two federal employees and the attempted murder of two federal employees. The dead included federal judge John Roll. on Monday morning, will travel to Arizona today (Wednesday) to attend a memorial service for the victims of the shooting. During Monday's 13minute hearing, Loughner, who did not enter a plea, confirmed his identity and had an attorney appointed to defend him. When asked, he said he understood that he could get life in prison or the death penalty. The
lawyer assigned to him, Judy Clarke, previously defended Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Timothy McVeigh. The federal judge ordered Loughner held without bail and scheduled a preliminary court appearance for January 24th. It is unclear whether the US justice department will seek the death penalty against him.
Qantas will resume its Airbus A380s flights to the United States on Sunday, when the first flight will take off from Melbourne for Los Angeles. The airline grounded its six A380s for intensive safety checks after the explosion on November 4th punched a hole in the wing of a Qantas Singapore-Australia flight. Qantas resumed limited A380 flights to London in late
November. A spokesman said the trans-Pacific flights had been suspended for longer as the journey requires greater engine thrust.

Men and women have been banned from shaking hands in a part of the country controlled by the Islamist group alShabab. It also barred men and women who are not related from walking together or chatting in public. It is the first time such social restrictions have been introduced. the Pope said the law served as a pretext for acts of injustice against minorities. Mr Taseer's assassination has exposed the deep division within Pakistan's society.

FACTORY CLEARANCE! Friendship symbol could be scrapped Turkey may demolish a giant peace sculpture being built near Kars on the border with Armenia which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan described as grotesque during a visit to the city at the weekend. He reportedly said the monument was an affront to the nearby shrine of Hasan Harakani and urged the local mayor to knock it down and create a park in its place. It was commissioned as a gesture of reconciliation, as Turkey and Armenia began attempts to repair relations after a century of hostility. The work, called the Statue of Humanity, towers over the city of Kars - with two 30metre high sculptures
representing a divided human. Kars once had a large Armenian community, which was annihilated in 1915 as part of mass killings which Armenians and many historians believe was a genocide. Turkey continues to reject the term, alleging that atrocities were committed on both sides in World War I. In 2009 the two countries agreed to normalise relations. Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay has
been playing down the prime minister’s remarks. He told reporters the theme of the monument was correct, but there had been controversy over its location for several years. The concrete sculpture has been criticised as ugly or as a waste of money. The artist has said that if the statue is destroyed it would be like the Taliban's demolition of ancient Buddhist statues in Bamiyan in 2001.

Grandparents Derek and Sandra Streets faced losing the bungalow in which they had planned to spend the rest of their lives. Quotations manager Derek had been forced to remortgage the twobedroom property after the company he worked for went bust, owing him thousands in wages. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: "This is a very exciting initiative. It's a great example of how Government, the media, industry and retailers can work together to help families to be healthy. "The healthy option isn't always the cheapest option so it's a really important step to be able to offer £50 off healthier foods, drinks and activities."
More Royal wedding plans announced Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a new UK tourism drive and reckoned that there was plenty on the agenda to attract visitors. "A Royal wedding, Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee and of course the London Olympic and Paralympic Games offer us a once-ina-lifetime opportunity, not just for national pride and celebration, but also to promote this country as the perfect tourist
destination," he said. His remarks came after further announcements about the forthecoming Royal Wedding between Katherine Middleton and Prince William. Head of the Church of England, The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams will marry the couple while the Bishop Of London will give the address and the Dean of Westminster will conduct the service. Katherine will travel to
Westminster Abbey for the service, starting at 11am, through historic areas of The Mall, Whitehall, Parliament Square and Horseguards Parade. It is not yet known who will be designing and making the wedding gown but the service will be followed by a private celebration in Buckingham Palace. Prince Charles has said he will be hosting a dinner in the evening “followed by dancing.”

Bankers Pandas on their Teacher fired bonuses way to Scotland for sledging It was announced on Monday that the boss of the Royal Bank of Scotland is unlikely to receive a cash performance bonus this year. Instead he will be given shares, the dividends from which will be based on the bank’s performance. The pot for this year’s bonuses still stands at around £7 billion to be shared by the top five banks. Prime Minister David Cameron said that this was only right and proper as the bank received a huge bail-out from the British taxpayer which must be paid back first. However, banking sources said that if bonuses weren’t paid the UK would risk its senior bankers moving from UK banks to other countries where they would be guaranteed bonuses.
Edinburgh Zoo is looking forward in the near future to welcoming a pair of Giant Pandas, a gift from China. The pair will be the first giant pandas to be living in the UK for seventeen years. Negotiations started between the zoo and China in 2008 with a letter of intent being exchanged in May of that year but the final agreement was signed at Lancaster House in London this Monday. The pandas will be housed in a specailly refurbished enclosure which was formerly home to the gorillas. Scottish culture and external affairs minister
Fiona Hyslop said: "Edinburgh Zoo has a world-leading reputation for animal conservation and I am delighted that Scotland has been chosen to take part in China's breeding programme for giant pandas. "The agreement gives Scotland an important role in securing the future of this endangered species."
Design and technology teacher Richard Tremelling, 37, has been fired from his job following a hearing in which he was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct for allowing pupils to use a sledge in the ground of Cefn Hengoed Community School in Swansea In February 2009. The teacher had taken the sledge to the school to give a lesson in classic design and two of the boys in the class asked if they could have a go on the Scandinavian sled afterwards. It had snowed overnight and there was a good covering which Mr Tremelling assessed to be safe. The sledge in question was a
Scandinavian "snow racer" which was an "exceedingly stable sledge", Mr Tremelling told the hearing in Cardiff. He said: "I did not go sledding on a cheap Asda £10 sledge, I went on a Scandinavian classic design sledge which has built-in safety features, and also a brake." The school rules state that all outside activities or visits must have permission in writing and Mr Tremelling had not written for permission. However, he said that because the activity took place within the grounds of the school and were an extension of the lesson he did not feel that written permission was necessary.

Local News Smoke ban man defends ‘right’ José Eugenio Arias-Camisón hit the headlines when he refused to enforce the new anti-smoking law in his Marbella restaurant and now isn’t fazed by the the authorities’ apparent willingness to make an example of him. A Basque by birth, AriasCamisón was “invited to leave” his home town of San Sebastian 25 years ago because “I'm very right wing and very Spanish”. He chose Marbella as his new home, where he worked in real estate until he opened the Asador Guadalmina ten years ago. Now he says if people can't smoke in his restaurant, he’ll close it and leave Spain altogether. He doesn't smoke more than a couple of cigars a year and never touches cigarettes but he insists on defending other people's right to smoke when and where they want to. He has called on other bar and restaurant owners to follow

the law came into force. Bar owners all over the country are reporting losses of up to 80% because of the law and a trickle of them are beginning to follow AriasCamisón's example, whatever the consequences.(see P10)
Ronda hotel to modernise The Fundacion Unicaja, which has taken over the concession for the Hotel Reina Victoria in Ronda, plans to tailor it to today's tourist needs by adding an indoor swimming pool, a spa, a gymnasium and several conference rooms.
A complete overhaul of the existing structure is also on the drawing board. Overlooking the Tajo gorge, it is the town's most famous hotel. It was built in 1906 to accommodate the Britons
who regularly fled to the town on the RondaAlgeciras railway to escape Gibraltar's muggy summers - which is perhaps why the path leading from the hotel to the town centre is also the Paseo de los Ingleses (Englishmen's Walk).
Author Irving's rooms in the Alhambra opened The rooms occupied by Washington Irving in the Alhambra during his second visit to Granada will be open to the public until the end of January. Irving, a member of the US diplomatic delegation in Madrid, first visited the city in March 1828 and went away very impressed with the Alhambra which was occupied by gypsies
and rapidly falling into ruin. He pulled strings in Madrid and returned with permission to stay in the Alhambra for several weeks which is when he began writing his Tales of the Alhambra. The book became a best seller in the States and Britain, arousing so much interest in the decaying Arab monument that the
Spanish government was finally pressured into rescuing it. It had been something of a mecca for romantic travellers and artists and the book's success opened up Granada and the Alhambra to a much wider audience. As a result, most of the Alhambra is closed to the public to save it for posterity.

Bars using blankets Gib 'a bad neighbour' to help smokers Bars and restaurants are installing heaters, installing canvas partitions in their outdoor areas to keep out the wind and even distributing blankets to clients since the tougher anti-smoking law came into effect on January 2nd – anything to keep their clients happy, said the president of Malaga's Hoteliers Association, Rafael Prado. He said the demand for canvas partitions had soared in the past two weeks. To meet the new requirements the partitions can only be used on two sides of the outdoor area, otherwise it becomes an enclosed area and must be
As polls continue to show that the Partido Popular could win a majority in Andalucia, the party has stepped up its attacks on Gibraltar.
The PP's MP for Cadiz, José Ignacio Landaluce, has said he intends to ask deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba why Gibraltar is being
allowed to expand into Spanish territory by land, sea and air.
Last week, he showed reporters at a press conference a video about “Gibraltar authorities” reclaiming land “in Spanish waters”. He said he wants the government to support Spanish ships which, he claimed, are not being
allowed to cross a one-anda-half mile limit imposed by Gibraltar and mentioned the “environmental risk” posed by the storage of fuel in the so-called “floating petrol stations” off the Rock. Sr Landaluce said he wanted to know if the government intends to continue tolerating “this bad neighbour's abuses”.

Man in long hair row fights sacking A man who had worked 13 years for the same company delivering its dairy products and restocking shelves at stores throughout the province was sacked after the manager of a supermarket in Torremolinos complained about his hair. The 35-year-old father of four, identified only as G.D.R. had been asked to take over the route of a woman who had called in sick. When he was restocking the shelves at the supermarket the manager approached and told him
to leave the premises immediately because he did not “want a man with a ponytail in his store”. G.D.R. wears his hair slicked back with gel and the ponytail is curled round into a bun. The following day when he went to work he was called into the manager's office where he expected to be
asked for his version of the incident, but was sacked on the spot. The man is now fighting the company for unfair dismissal and is suing the supermarket chain and the Torremolinos manager as being responsible for his dismissal.

Women thought they were smuggling diamonds A Malaga judge has absolved two women who were used as mules without their knowledge or consent. They had been paid €3,000 in June last year to go to Venezuela, all expenses paid, and bring back diamonds. However, when they arrived back in Malaga, they were stopped at Customs where they discovered they had cocaine in the suitcases they had been given in Venezuela. The police arrested them and two members of the gang who had been deceiving people into believing they were bringing in diamonds, which carries a more lenient sentence if they were caught. The women told the judge they would not have accepted the money if they had known they were to carry drugs. The prosecution had asked for a ten-year fail sentence of each one but the judge let them off with a warning.

A national pastime
W
ith the elections just over five months away (May 22nd), I have visions of all those foreigners who have decided to do their duty worrying their heads off, trying to decide which party is the least corrupt before they cast their vote. Well, all the parties are equally corrupt so they can save themselves a lot of time and trouble by voting for the party that catches their fancy. There is only one exception and that’s Union, Progress & Democracy (UP&D) founded by former Socialist Euro MP Rosa Diez a few months before the 2008 general election, so it hasn’t had time to be as corrupt as ALL the others. That includes local parties like the Partido Andalucista, small parties like the Izquierda Unida (United Left), and nationalist parties like the Convergencia y Union which has just returned to power in Catalonia, as well as the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular.
I
know that sounds cynical but I’m simply quoting an article I picked up some weeks ago from one of the national dailies titled La cleptocracia nacional – with cleptocracia being a fusion of kleptomania and democracy (kleptomania being a recurrent urge to steal, typically without regard for need or profit, according to the Oxford English dictionary).
to line their pockets without interference from anyone – police, politicians or the general public. The Socialist Party sat back and let him get on with it because he was taking votes away from the Partido Popular.
T
he so-called Gurtel case involving PP politicians or party members in Valencia and Madrid is a more typical case, the article said. It hit the headlines in April 2007, when it was revealed that Valencia regional premier Francisco Camps had or had not paid for some made-to-measure suits, depending on who you listened to. Like a lot of people, I thought it was just another media circus manipulated behind the scenes by the Socialists in the run-up to the European Parliament election in July that year as part of their desperate bid to wrest control of the Valencia region from the PP. The ploy didn’t work because Francisco Camps and the PP won more votes during that election than they had in the previous year’s general election. But the case was kept alive, with a leak here and a leak there, probably because the Socialists believed that if they harped on about it long enough it would turn voters against the PP in Valencia and everywhere else. Less than two weeks ago, a poll showed that if the municipal elections were held tomorrow, the PP would wipe the Socialists off the Valencia map.
W

T
he article starts by highlighting the Malaya case currently being heard in a Marbella court, which is getting so much media coverage as much for the involvement of a tragically romantic singer, Isabel Pantoja (widow of a very popular bullfighter who bled to death after being gored by a bull) as much for the sheer scope and depth of the corruption unearthed by the police investigation. But it’s an atypical case of corruption because it involved “outsiders” rather than mainstream politicians, having been founded by one Jesus Gil, a builder turned politician because – and get a load of this – he was tired of paying out millions in bribes to get juicy contracts or reclassification of building sites from the then Socialist Marbella Council or the Junta de Andalucia, a Socialist stronghold. So he decided he would save a lot of money by founding his own party, GIL, which would also have the added advantage of allowing him and his cronies
Global vultures
e can only conclude that a) the Socialists are as thick as two short planks, b) voters couldn’t care less about corruption or c) the Socialists are using the case to divert people’s attention from more pressing problems, like the economic crisis – or a combination of all three. In fact, the Socialists are thick, the voters don't care and, according to the article, of the 730 cases of political corruption currently before courts around Spain, 264 involve Socialists and 200 feature the PP. The rest, according to the article, are distributed proportionally among the smaller parties, with the exception of UP&D. The majority of the cases involve local councillors in charge of urban planning – shades of the Malaya case – with Andalucia leading the field.
A
ccording to the article, corruption today is more diffuse and has spread lower down the echelons of power. When Felipe Gonzalez was in power (19821996), corruption was closer to the seat of power in Madrid – the Guardia Civil, the Bank of Spain and other top banks, huge infrastructure contracts for the big national companies, Expo ’92, the Official Gazette and even the Red Cross. Everyone was lining their pockets and most of them were Socialists or very close to the party. And who tried to clean it up – none other than the man the Socialists most love to hate, Jose Maria Aznar. But more on that next week.
W
hat an unfair beating the markets are giving us. But because money makes the world go around, no matter who or what comes to Spain’s rescue, the evil global financiers will always be there, cheering on Spain’s doom and hoping, no doubt, it will lead to a euro-zone crash. This is a war between speculators, with Spain and Portugal caught in the middle. On one side, there is a group of positive thinkers from China, Korea and other Asian nations who have already envisioned the large future cashflow coming their way from their investment opportunities in the continent. But on the other side, unfortunately, you have the menaces from Wall Street, who want nothing more than to see the euro falter and allow the dollar to once again reign over the universe. Not to mention a desire to see money in their pockets now and not later, like the Chinese.
O
ver the weekend, Der Spiegel of Germany quoted anonymous sources saying that Berlin and Paris were pressuring Lisbon to take a bailout package now to prevent further disaster to the continental economies. Portugal’s finances are not healthy, but they're not that frail either. Lisbon knows that seeking help from Brussels would damage the country’s ability to raise credit in the international markets. Prime Minister Jose Socrates rejected the speculation by saying that his country would meet its budget targets and telling lawmakers that the 1.3% growth recorded last year was better than his Socialist government had expected. Even Spain’s economy minister Elena Salgado came to Portugal’s aid and dismissed the report on Monday. “The Spanish government is confident that it will recognize the fulfilment of its commitments and Portugal won’t need any outside help,” Salgado said in a radio interview after Germany’s finance ministry denied that it was pressuring Portugal. Still, the world’s stock market pundits consider Portugal a far gone case, and they are turning their eyes toward Spain, hedging their bets as to which month Madrid will cave in. All of this, of course, is unfair speculation because the Socialist government is doing all it can, albeit at a cautious snail’s pace, to repair Spain’s financial stability and credibility, yet wary investors won’t let up.
T
he conjectures over Portugal came at the end of a week of some much needed relief for Spain. In a surprisingly successful visit, Chinese executive vice premier Li Keqiang brought to Madrid a huge trade delegation, which ended up signing some €5.6 billion in agreements. Li said China was confident that Spain would pull out of its doldrums and, if Prime Minister Zapatero sticks to his austerity plan, the country will become the leader in growth in the European Union in two years. It was the same assessment given in an IMF report in October. Li then went on to Britain where he also penned some £2.6 billion in accords, even throwing two pandas in with the deal. Then the Japanese announced Tuesday that they would buy a fifth of the bonds the European rescue fund plans to issue to finance Ireland’s bailout. So if Europe is going down the drain as many sceptics preach, what are the Chinese, known for their thriftiness, and the Japanese, known for their flows of venture capital, doing here?
F
irst, they are betting on the euro because they know that powerhouses such as Germany and France cannot let the zone disintegrate. Writing in the International Herald Tribune on December 28th, Reuters correspondent Jeremy Gaunt said that despite all the domestic noise to let the euro fail being transmitted from inside Germany’s borders, there is a drive – albeit weakened – to keep the zone intact for political purposes. Letting the euro zone collapse would not only be economically and politically devastating but turn into a gargantuan creditability problem. Those Europeans have never been able to get their act together, many in America would gleefully say.
S
o unfortunately Spain’s Socialist government is going to have to roll with the punches as the markets continue to badger this country. It is going to take time for Zapatero’s austerity plans to show some gain but if the economy can demonstrate just a glimmer of growth at the end of the third quarter, then maybe the financial vultures will leave us alone – but again, don’t bet on it.

In return they were given gifts that included bags of marbles kindly donated by JK’s, plus other toys and items donated by the businesses in the centre, including Dunnes Stores and the toy shop. The toys had been divided into five lots. Pat Jay from Heart fm had already taken one sack to the children, including some teenagers, in a home in the Granada region in time for Three Kings. And on Monday she was given another sack full of fluffy animals, dolls and a few games for the younger children.Unfortunately, at the time of going to press, we do not know where the remaining three sacks of toys will be going as, disappointingly, the Mayor of Coin failed turn up to the presentation as planned to tell us!

Why cats scratch
part one
Cats scratch for two reasons. a. To condition their claws. You will notice that they scratch off the old claws which can be seen lying at the bottom of the scratching post. b. To leave a territorial message, which varies from “Keep out - this is my territory” to “Look at me. I am scratching.” This is a visual message and also a scent message -- from the scent glands on their paws. c. They have a need to top up an existing scent marked scratch area regularly with new scent. Therefore once they have a scratching place, they will continue to use it. This may be a way of the updating information conveyed by the first scratch! THE EMOTIONAL NEED TO SCRATCH If cats get anxious or stressed, they will scratch more or in new places. Using a water pistol on an already scratching cat will therefore make it even more worried. It may even turn from scratching to spraying. So NEVER punish or frighten a scratching cat. Cats also use scratching as a way of asserting themselves and will scratch in the presence
of another cat. They may take turns at the same post. Finally some cats scratch to get your attention. They often will look at you as they start scratching. Saying “No!” or shouting at it IS attention. If your cat is an attention seeker make sure you don't 'reward' it. Walk out of the room when it scratches. A GETTING POST SCRATCHING AND ENCOURAGING USE a make) (or Buy scratching post or a scratching pad large enough for the cat to scratch at full height. It must be completely stable. One cat owner said their cat enjoyed scratching the side of fabric/cardboard plant pots. There are also based cardboard scratching pads that are more horizontal than vertical. You have to buy a product that your cat likes. This may not be the product you want and if it takes three or four goes to find the right one, you’ll have to live with that.

As it appears that the Gas Scam "inspectors" are on the prowl again, I thought your other readers might find the following information useful.
Company and request this inspection. They will then be issued with a certificate which is valid for a further 5 years.
In Decree 919, approved on the July 28th 2006, it was decided that the owner/user of the bottled gas is the ONLY person responsible for its correct maintenance and use. This decree was published in the BOE on the September 4th 2006 and can be accessed and read by anyone. A periodic inspection must be carried out.
Under no circumstances do the "inspectors" roam the streets ( or countryside), knocking on doors to see if your gas installation needs inspecting! That is rather like an electrician dropping in to see if by chance your wiring is faulty. It just doesn't happen. So any "inspector" who has not been called in by appointment is NOT the genuine article. Unfortunately, these people prey on the elderly, usually foreigners who live alone, but elderly Spaniards have also been known to fall for this scam. A badge (which can be made up on any computer) and a clipboard can be quite convincing.
The inspection/installation is valid for a period of 5 years. Most users who live in urban areas will receive a reminder from the OFFICIAL Repsol Company 3 months before they are due to request an inspection. Very probably, people living in rural areas will not receive this letter, or will not receive it in time. It is entirely up to the client/user to contact the Repsol
Brian Deller A retired UK couple are reported in the UK national press to have been arrested for operating a vehicle MOT certificate scam for the last five years that was estimated to have netted them a million pounds sterling in payments made by resident expats on the Continent, including Spain, who were avoiding having to take their UK registered motor vehicles to the UK for the MOT test. In most cases they were probably supposed to have legally been transferred to local (Spanish, etc.) plates. The arrested couple, as the report states, operated locally under the advertised name of “J G O’Connor”, had regularly advertised in Spain in a free weekly national Englishlanguage newspaper (Editor: NOT ours!) that, we are reliably advised, must have known about the fraud as they were about 18 months ago advised of it on several occasions in writing and by phone calls and even one personal visit to their offices. The crime now means that there must be many UKregistered vehicles operating in Spain that could be mechanically faulty. Despite the aforementioned newspaper’s editor being warned in early 2009, even in
We ourselves can purchase new up-to -date orange tubing from any ferreteria
and also the "alcachofa", which clips onto the top of the gas bottle. It is a good idea to do this before making the appointment for the inspection. For any queries or doubts and also, of course, to make the appointment for the inspectors' visit, there is a Customers Service telephone number. It is 901 100 100. Finally, the only people authorized to make this inspection, and issue the corresponding certificate, are the Oficial Service of Repsol Butano themselves or an authorized representative. It is simpler and has more guarantees to go to the Official Service. Should there be a leak, fire or explosion, any unauthorized "certificate" has no value whatsoever for insurance purposes. I hope this will be of some assistance to readers.
Marbella writing, the warnings were totally ignored and the paper continued the weekly adverts until late 2010 giving the advert its own column in the classifieds. The couple are reported to have operated out of a caravan in Essex and a luxury villa in Portugal that possibly could have been bought with the proceeds and the press photo showed several luxury cars around the villa. Now the owners of hundreds of UK-registered vehicles that have used this couple¡s service and are driving here in Spain will have to wait and hope they are not stopped during the increasing numbers of roadside checks as this will be more proof that their vehicles are illegal. Not only can they be fined for not having transferred the vehicle onto Spanish plates, they also face the charge of participating in a crime as they will have known that the MOT certificates supplied by the above couple were bogus. They can be identified by the garage name at the top, a London area garage. Also, please note that foreign EU vehicles now used by resident expats in Spain can only be MOT-tested in the country of the legal
registration - for the UK this does not include Gibraltar, only the British Isles. New arrivals that settle in Spain have 60 days to reregister private vehicles that qualify and 30 days for commercial units. Many do not bother to check the rules and hope they will not be caught. The method used was (I phoned up and checked in early 2009) that the willing victims were asked to send a photocopy of their UK vehicle registration documents and up to £200 in cash, then a new MOT certificate would be posted back for that vehicle. Now the “victims” in Spain will have to decide whether or not to rapidly re-register their UK vehicles with the added problem that they will most likely be expected to pay import duty now as the time is past where they could be imported as personal property (when they first arrived to settle in Spain within the 60/30 days periods), or to quickly dispose of the vehicle. Also the DVLA will want to know the legal status of such vehicles as they should have been advised of any “exporting” and failure to do so attracts a penalty of up to £1,000.

e Brightest Star Whenever I ask people which is the brightest star in the sky they almost invariably say ‘The North Star’. Well the North Star is NOT the brightest star, instead it is Sirius. Stars’ brightness is measured in magnitude, the lower the number then the brighter the star or planet will be. Under absolute perfect viewing conditions away from any light pollution and with perfect eyesight a human can make out stars down to about 6.4 in magnitude. In ‘normal’ viewing in a small town with a few street lights you will probably get to see stars that are brighter than about 3.0 magnitude. Venus, being the brightest planet in the sky can reach a dazzling brightness of -4.6 and the full Moon is -12. The Sun also has a magnitude, this is -26 magnitude and now the International Space Station can reach a magnitude of -4 almost as bright as Venus. The North Star is a mere 1.9. Sirius or the Dog Star marks the head of the constellation Canis Major or the ‘great dog’. It is magnitude -1.46, almost twice as bright as the next brightest star Canopus (or Sohail as the Moors called it). You may have noticed the name Sohail around Fuengirola; the town’s Moorish first inhabitants had a strong connection with the star Sohail but more about that next month. Sirius is about twice the size of our Sun but is over 25 times brighter; it is also relatively close by being only about 8 light years from us whereas the closest star to us, Alpha Centauri, is around 4.5 light years away and cannot be seen from north of the equator as it is a southern star. Sirius is not just one star, with the advent of more powerful telescopes in 1861 a faint companion star, Sirius B, was discovered orbiting around Sirius. Double stars, even triple and quadruple groups of stars are more common in the universe than single stars like our sun; can you imagine what it must be like living on a planet
that has two, three or even more suns in the sky? In ancient Egyptian times the appearance of Sirius above the horizon just before sunrise was a sure fire indication to the annual flooding of the Nile and they even based their calendar around the appearance of Sirius in the sky. Ancient Egyptians called Sirius the 'Dog Star', after their god Osiris, whose head in pictograms resembled that of a dog. In Egypt, Sirius shines for most of the summer, and since it is such a bright star, the Egyptians actually believed that the additional light from this nearby star was responsible for the summer heat. This of course is not true. However the origin of the phrase 'the dog days of summer' comes from this ancient belief, the 'dog star' being the root of this common saying. So how to find Sirius. Go outside at this time of year around 10pm and look south east and you will see the distinct ‘butterfly shape’ of Orion. You cannot mistake Orion; he has three stars very close together in a perfectly straight line forming his ‘belt’. Now follow the line of his belt down to the left and you will find Sirius as a very bright blue/white coloured star twinkling above the horizon and now you will know that you are looking at the brightest star in the sky.

A set of traditions steeped in history and passed on to new generations Written by Andrea MacLean

C
ultural heritage is not only expressed through buildings and artefacts. It is also embedded in language, music, dance, story telling, festivals and rituals.
S
pain is rich in cultural heritage and is second only to Italy for its number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. But it’s also a country that has revered its festivals and rituals, cultivated over many generations and a constant within communities despite the modern age - the sort of things that are also recognised by UNESCO, as Intangible Cultural Heritage treasures.
A
nd here the country has also been making its mark. Just a couple of months ago UNESCO added some new Spanish entries to the list that is being built of things that are not just rooted in architecture but reflect the very heart of communities and are a source of interest
to tourists.
T
op of the list of recent Spanish additions was flamenco. It seems almost superfluous here in Andalucia to recognise this art form. You don’t have to go to the heartland in Seville to enjoy it. Just about every town and village has a Peña and there’s nothing to stop any of us from going to classes and joining in at feria time. On the other hand, if you do go to Seville or to Granada you can steep yourself in this art form and enjoy it at its highest level. Seville at festival time is a noisy place – clicking and stamping and strumming assails the ears from every theatre, tapas bar and street corner. It’s not just about castanets and flouncy frocks – it’s a style of guitar playing and singing that has a worldwide following. UNESCO believes that it is absorbed into the identity of numerous communities and groups, in particular the Gitano (gypsy) ethnic
community. The heart and soul of flamenco has been passed from generation to generation and if you cannot make it to the Seville feria this year (May 3rd –8th) then next time you go to Granada head up to the top of the Albaicin, the gypsy quarter. There, at the panoramic look-out, you will almost certainly find yourself swaying to the sound of the guitar and clap of hands as groups of young gypsies entertain the tourists. The police pop along to move the youngsters on, then disappear themselves after ten minutes – a cue for the return of the youngsters. As you look across from the viewing area to the setting sun turning the walls of the Alhambra to liquid gold, while listening to the unaffected joy of these youngsters it becomes a tourist moment to treasure.
A
nother of the recent additions includes the Castells in Catalonia. We are not talking about
castles as such – but precarious human leaning towers that take the breath away. The towers are as high as 10 storeys – big blokes shoulder the strain and as it gets higher the participants get smaller and lighter. The three uppermost tiers are made up of youngers hurled up the side and placed on the top ranks. So visitors won’t get the chance to try to clamber the tower. But anyone is welcome to help form the Pinya – the throng of people that supports the base. Musicians set the rhythm while the tower is being built and the reason the castells are now on the UNESCO list is because the knowledge of how to successfully raise the towers is passed down from generation to generation as successive youngsters are trained in the art. Catalonians regard the castells as an integral part of their heritage and no festival in a Catalonian town or village is complete without one. One of the best places for the visitor to see them is in
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. At the Fiesta de la Merce ( September 24th), the climax of the festival season in the city, thousands flock to the castell competition on Placa de Sant Jaume, in the Barri Gotic. But be prepared for the sound of ambulance sirens to compete with the sound of the bands. Towers can and do fall – but so far no health and safety executive type person has ever tried to decree that something as idiosyncratic and mad as the tower building should be wiped from Spain’s heritage.
O
ther Spanish additions to the list show just how diverse and rich Spain’s culture can be. The Mystery Play in Elche is a sacred musical drama of the death, the passage to heaven and the crowning of the Virgin Mary and since the mid 15th century has been performed in the Basilica of Santa Maria and the streets of the old city of Elche, near Alicante. The
performance is entirely sung over two days (August 14th and 15th) and comprises a night procession, lit by hundreds of people carrying candles and a day procession, ending with the Basilica. The Patum of Berga is a series of parades and performances, with papier maché figures, held during the week of Corpus Christi in this Catalan town north of Barcelona. Cavalletes (model horses) vie with Maces (demons wielding whips and maces and Guites (mule dragons) in this spectacular production.
B
ut maybe one of the most interesting on the list is the whistled language of Gomera, in the Canary Islands. It is a fully formed language with different sounds for consonants and vowels in use for centuries. It has been formally taught in schools since 1999 and is used by most of the island’s inhabitants – more than 22,000 of them. A truly rich and deeply held tradition.

Rabbie Burns Night at La Risa Burns Night celebrations are always a ‘must attend’ event and this year is no exception with La Risa @ Lauro Golf holding theirs on Saturday January 22nd. For only €15 per person you will enjoy a scrumptious 3 course meal that will include Haggis - the traditional Scottish dish; neeps swede to all non-Scottish people, and tatties - potatoes. Of course, the wee dram of Scotch whisky is also included in the price. Robert Burns was born on January 25th 1759 in Alloway in Ayrshire, Scotland. Known simply as The Bard in Scotland he is the country’s best loved poet and writer with his style such that a love of his works extends far beyond the Scottish borders. Best known for
his “Auld Lang Syne” sung at New Year (or Hogmanay), he is also famous for his “Love is like a red, red rose”, and his poem “To a louse; To a mouse”. He also wrote in standard English, and in these pieces, his political or civil commentary is often at its most blunt. Burns was a total romantic who had many affairs which didn’t endear him to the elders of the local kirks (churches). His romanticism is reflected in his poetry and it is his poetry that has made him immortal. Rabbie Burns died on July 21st 1796 in Dumfires Scotland at the young age of 37. Places are limited for this fabulous night out so to book your table call La Risa on 660 350 896 as soon as possible.

e Costa rocks Remember when bands were all about the music and not about the hype? Well, Costa Rock is just that. The band is going from strength to strength after a complete change at the beginning of this year, when founder member Rob Thorby decided to hand over the reins to vocalist Pete Carter. Pete knew of the legacy he had inherited: “Costa Rock was always THE band people spoke of as one of the top acts in the area,” he said ,“So when Robert asked me to take the band on and restore that reputation I jumped at the chance.” Joining Pete in the band is drummer Paul Hodge and guitarist Stephen Toals. ‘Hodge’ was a founder member of Rockabilly
legends The Sharks whilst Stephen is fast establishing himself as one of the best guitarists around. Meanwhile the recent departure of bass player Dave Speers left a huge gap until the band heard that Keith Bradshaw was looking for a new challenge after the demise of local band The Sandancers. “The key to a great band is whether they are asked back,” Pete explained: “And we get asked back everywhere we play, with one venue even booking us for regular appearances throughout next year after we'd finished our first set!” Call 628 578 317, email maidstoned@hotmail.com or find them on Facebook to find out where they’re next on.

’ve never liked Leonardo DiCaprio much as an actor, Ialthough I really like some of
e Green Hornet BY MICHAEL GONDRY Starring Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg Superhero movies are usually slated for a big summer release in the hope of maximising the box office return so it’s a bit unusual for a no-holds barred secret hero dressed in a disguise to hit cinema complexes this early in the year. The suspicious minded of us would put it down to the studio trying to bury its turkey post- Christmas. And certainly The Green Hornet is a comic book hero low down on the recognition list – so we have a superhero that not
many people have heard of and a release slot not designed to help. Yet all the critical buzz (sorry about the pun) is that this should certainly be on the to-see list. Rogen plays Britt Reid, the rich playboy son who is spurred into sorting out his life when he inherits a media empire after his father James (Tom Wilkinson) is killed in mysterious circumstances. He meets employee Kato, a martial arts expert. (And yes, apparently the Kato in
the Pink Panther movies was based on this character). The two decide to make a difference and team up to fight crime, with Britt becoming the masked vigilante Green Hornet and faithful Kato his unnamed assistant. The two take on Los Angeles gangland boss Benjamin Chudnofsky (Inglourious Basterd’s award winning Christoph Waltz) who unites all the gangs in a bid to bring down the man who would be his nemesis. In the meantime Britt’s love interest is his secretary
Lenore (Cameron Diaz). The character was a famous American radio show in the 30s which had died out by the early 50s and there have been TV outings too. But because it has been under the radar it means that the director and actors can create a film that has not been hampered by critical fan comment calling for strict observances of every nuance. A super year for superheroes With The Green Hornet first off the blocks ( see above) the fight for top dog in the world of superheroes will be fiercely contested this year. Runners and riders won’t include Batman and Superman - slated for release in 2012. All X-Men fans will be wanting to see what director Matthew Vaughn makes of the prequel to the first three XMen movies, in which Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen flexed their acting muscles. His XMen: First Class is out early summer. Vaughn had at one time been slated to direct Thor but the role of helming the movie passed to the slightly unlikely
figure of Kenneth Branagh. It’s a Marvel comic out of Marvel Studios and Chris Hemsworth plays the Norse god Thor who is banished to Earth from the kingdom of Asgard by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) as punishment for his reckless and feckless attitude. This will be released end April to separate it from another Marvel movie Captain America: The First Avenger - set in the 2nd World War and with links to the Iron Man series. Chris Evans plays the sickly Steve Rogers, enhanced to the peak of physical perfection by an experimental serum to turn into Captain America. The government

his films. I think I originally decided I didn’t like him the one and only time I saw James Cameron’s version of Titanic. Although it was the biggest earning film of all time until Mr Cameron released Avatar onto the world last year, I thought the then 23 year old DiCaprio looked more urchin than leading man and for me the romantic scenes between his character Jack, and Kate Winslet’s character Rose, look like an uncomfortable cradle snatching, even though he is actually older than she is in real life. o armed with my Swaspredetermined dislike , I surprised when I first saw the film The Beach, which was released in 2000. I had already read Alex Garland’s book on which the film was based but I thought DiCaprio played the part of a cocky, American traveller really well and The Beach is still a film that I enjoy watching from time to time. The story is based around a community of young travellers that have drifted in one way or another into a hidden paradise on the shores of an isolated island off the coast of Thailand. The self sustaining commune of modern day hippies rely on their own discretion and remote location to keep the hordes of backpacking tourists from their door but as rumours spread around the busy tourist resorts of an idyllic ‘secret’ beach, the tranquillity of the community is threatened. An added complication is the heavily guarded marijuana plantations that are also located on the same remote island, meaning that as stray backpackers arrive at the island, their first and sometimes last image is of machinegun wielding drug gangs. DiCaprio’s character Richard causes mayhem as he inadvertently draws unsuspecting backpackers to the island and ultimately, their deaths, fracturing the delicate agreement that keeps the drug mafia from
hassling the beach community. His sexual affairs also don’t endear him to the rest of the pack and a shark attack that leads to two deaths and a visit from armed drug growers, suddenly make the idyllic beach life seem much less idyllic. In the end, Richard and the remaining inhabitants of the beach swim back to the mainland having been chased off by the drug lords, lucky to escape with their lives and their memories. till holding onto the Swhatbelief that I couldn’t see others saw in this rapidly rising Hollywood star, I was surprised again to see how much I enjoyed Catch Me If You Can. Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken also have leading roles in the 2002 film that charts the rise and fall of epic young conman Frank Abagnale Jnr. Based on a true story, it is the relationship between DiCaprio’s 19 year old conman character and Tom Hanks as the FBI Fraud Agent Carl Hanratty that really seals the deal on the film. Fast paced and full of wit, the film charts the search for Abagnale as he bounces bad cheques across America and Europe. Bluffing his way into jobs as an airline pilot and a doctor, the quick thinking Abagnale manages to stay one step ahead of his would be captor, until eventually he gets caught in France. Back in the USA, Hanratty turns to the imprisoned master forger to help identify other cheque forgeries, eventually getting an early release for Abagnale on the proviso that he helps the US government and banking system to develop their own anti-fraud measures, for which the ex-con receives a generous enough salary to prevent him from needing to carry out the fraud for himself. All in all DiCaprio uses his charm and humour to great effect - and as we now know, is no slouch at heavy weight roles either.

What a romantic and creative time you are having at the moment Aries? You will feel compelled to express your true feelings to another and this could result in quite a passionate and fun filled week. You have the ability to motivate others into helping you with a sticky project that needs finishing. Make sure that you check any ‘minor’ details yourself instead of relying on others, let them help in the process but make sure that you are ‘on the ball’. Your actions are directed towards long term gain and the ‘bigger picture’ - as soon as you stray from this vision you will be jolted back to re-focus on long term growth and solutions. If abundance and wealth are your goals then this is the time to put the effort in to attain just that. Make sure that your facts are proven and valid and that you understand in depth any subject that you will be required to ‘pitch’ on. Social skills will be needed to excite and entice others. There are moves that you know you have to make even though they could make you ‘squirm’. Radical changes will help a situation that has become stale and although you may face opposition it will be better for all in the long run. Once your plan is solidly in place all opposition falls by the wayside. You are highly sensitive at the moment and are likely to take a lot of things to heart that would not normally affect you. There are those too that offer invaluable support. Keep your eyes open with regard to your personal possessions or wealth, there could be something devious going on behind the scenes that you are not fully aware of. One way or another the ‘truth’ has its way of surfacing now. This week could be challenging but at the same time you have the ability to turn things around with this new information. Perhaps someone is waiting for you to take the bait but do you really want to? Before jumping in feet first, first make sure there is a soft landing. The planets have a way of amplifying your words and actions right now, therefore you need to think very carefully about what you do or say. Words carry with them a great impact and your grace, charm and powers of attraction are very high. This is the perfect time for social and business networking, when important contacts can be made, as long as you don’t buy into all the flattery coming your way. There may be some good news on the financial front by the end of the week. Slowly but surely things are all starting to fit together and fall into place. Your intuition combined with your acute powers of observation are scarily revealing this week. You have the ability to figure out a secret or mystery long before anyone else has realised there is even one to solve. A close relationship is evolving and improving making you feel happier and far more emotionally secure than you have for a while. Time also to get your head down and concentrate on a project that needs attention.
If it’s not broke then don’t fix it. Due to planetary pressure you will feel an overwhelming urge to try to move things on before they are ready, so the key to this week is patience. There has been a lot of progress going on behind the scenes and things are moving quicker than seems apparent. You have been pushing down a certain path and you need to hold onto trust and certainty that you will reach your rd September 23 - goal. Just because something happened a certain way in the past does not mean that it will happen the same way again. Your instincts are high right now and this is fuelling a desire in you that is feeding your will. With energy like this directed to a purpose you have an opportunity to get exactly what your heart desires. Make sure that you really listen to what others are saying as there is a temptation to hear only what you want to hear.
SAGITTARIUS It is all work and no play, with little time for any rest and relaxation but perhaps you are being pushed for a very good reason. What is certain is what you are putting out there is going to pay off and the rewards will wing their way back to you soon. The weight of Saturn has been weighing heavily on you giving your body a feeling of being held down by gravity but by the weekend there will be November 22nd - a slight release from this intensity. CAPRICORN It can feel as though everything is closing in on you this week and it is essential that you stop yourself from having the classic reaction of panicking. Some things are out of your hands and a certain drama needs to be played out. As the week progresses the mood will lighten and the surge of energy within you will make you unstoppable. Something is happening behind the scenes and it is vital to pay attention to what is going on. Keep your eyes and ears open and your feet firmly on the ground so that you are not caught up in someone else’s fantasy. You realise that one chapter of your life is not completely closed and you know that you cannot move on fully unless you have laid it totally to rest. What you need is closure on some issue or to discover the ‘truth’ on some matter that means a lot to you. Some of the greatest innovations and ideas are born from people experiencing some kind of struggle in their lives. Having risen from the ashes there is an urge in you to create something new, fresh and useful that will improve the lives of others. Knowledge and even associates from the past are likely to creep back helping you combine the old with the new. There is a desire to keep traditions and yet to explore new horizons and seek out adventures.

By the time this first article of 2011, dos mil once, appears everyone will have made their New Year's resolutions - própósitos para el año nuevo. Perhaps some may even have broken them already but let’s talk about intentions. Some of the good intentions I've been hearing are: Voy a aprender español - I'm going to learn Spanish Voy a hablar más español con mis vecinos - I'm going to speak more Spanish with my neighbours. Voy a estudiar los verbos - I'm going to study the verbs Vamos a practicar mucho - We're going to practise a lot Vamos a aprender una palabra nueva cada día - We're going to learn a new word every day. Of course, there are other good intentions not related to learning Spanish: Voy a adelgazar - I'm going to lose weight, and Voy a dejar de fumar - I'm going to stop smoking seem to be two of the favourites. Just in case you find yourself in the position where all those great ideas and resolutions have turned to dust you can talk about what you intended to do. Iba a perder diez kilos - I was going to lose ten kilos Iba a dejar de beber tanto - I was going to give up drinking so much Ibamos a ir al gymnasio todos los días - We were going to go to the gym every day. Ibamos a correr todas las mañanas - We were going to run every morning. Well, there's always next year. Eating carrots makes you more attractive Researchers have found a novel way to get young people to eat their veggies. Yellow pigment, or carotenoids, give the skin a yellow hue which, according to researchers at St Andrews and Bristol universities, makes people more attractive. The team asked 40 volunteers to rate 51 Scottish Caucasian faces for healthiness and attractiveness and found people that with a yellow skin hue were perceived as particularly healthy and attractive. They also established for the first
time that yellow pigments, or carotenoids, from certain fruit and vegetables such as carrots, plums, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, spinach and collard greens played a key role in producing yellowness in skin. The researchers said the link
between yellowness and carotenoids opened up new strategies for encouraging young people to eat more fruit and vegetables, especially as it took just two months of increased consumption to produce visible results. They said: "Telling people
they might have a heart attack in 40 years' time if they don't eat more healthily is one thing. But we can now say 'This is what you could look in a couple of months if you increased your fruit and veg intake'."
Garlic good for athlete’s foot It’s easy to contract athlete’s foot - all it takes is a step on a moist floor or a moment in a gym locker room to end up with the fungus which causes flaking and tiny cracks between the toes that sting as much as paper cuts. But it’s not so easy to treat. People use creams, sprays, gels and prescription drugs but the condition has a bad habit of returning .

But a small number of recent studies have come up with an alternative remedy – garlic, which has been widely used throughout history for its antimicrobial properties. A compound in garlic known as “ajoene,” which gets its name from “ajo,” the Spanish word for garlic, seems to be especially effective against the fungus that causes athlete’s foot and effective against a number of fungal
infections, including those caused by Candida. Researchers compared a week of twice-daily applications of mild garlic solutions with topical applications of the popular drug Lamisil in about 50 people with athlete’s foot. Two months later, they found that a garlic solution containing about one percent ajoene had a 100% cure rate, compared with a 94% cure rate for one percent Lamisil. Some

experts recommend adding a few finely crushed cloves of garlic to a foot bath and soaking the foot for 30 minutes, or mixing minced garlic with olive oil, and then using a cotton ball to rub some of the solution on the affected area. The side effects of garlic are generally mild and uncommon, but some people can develop allergic rashes or blisters with topical use.

Walking helps reduce cravings If your New Year’s resolutions included breaking a bad habit or cutting back on food and shedding a few pounds, then a simple but overlooked trick could come in handy - go for a walk. It’s not the most glamorous weight-loss strategy, but studies have found that a brisk walk around the block can significantly dampen cravings, whether the urge for junk food or the desire to light up a cigarette. In a recent study, researchers recruited a group of “regular chocolate eaters” - people who ate at least two chocolate bars a day - and had them abstain for three
days. They then divided them into groups, put them to work on difficult cognitive tests to raise their stress levels, and tempted them with unwrapped chocolate bars. The researchers found that if the subjects walked for 15 minutes on a treadmill at a pace that was brisk but not tiring, they were far less likely to suffer cravings, and even showed lower blood pressure when handling the chocolate bars. Other studies with people trying to give up smoking found that brief walks not only beat back cravings, but also reduced withdrawal symptoms and increased the time between cigarettes smoked.

Tests on stroke patients 90 days after being given the antidepressant (also known as fluoxetine) found that those who took the drug had gained significantly
more function in their upper and lower limbs than patients who were given a placebo. Patients in the fluoxetine group were also more likely to be coping independently. All patients in the study had moderate to severe motor disabilities following their stroke.

Will Romeo be joined by Juliet in Beckham household when summer baby arrives? The Brand Beckham new baby, expected in the summer, is favourite to be a girl reckon the bookies – and Sandra and Juliet are topping the list of names for the new tot. David and Victoria announced the news of their fourth child to family and friends at their Hertfordshire home on Sunday and the couple were said to be “delighted”. Victoria has long wanted a fourth child and has made no secret of the fact that she would love to have a girl. The news puts a sparkle into the New Year for the Beckhams, whose marriage has yet again come under the spotlight following allegations of David’s affairs with women in the US. But Becks is now starting to train with Premier

Victoria suddenly start scoffing down the chocolates it will be a girl, according to the old wives’ tales. But if she develops savoury cravings then it will be a boy.
Now all eyes will be on Victoria to see if there are any give-away signs of the sex of the child. The three month scan has just revealed that the baby is healthy but there is no news yet on whether it’s a boy or a girl. So when Victoria’s bump starts to show fans will be watching for a low bump for a boy, and a high bump for a girl. Should

Actress under strain following story line EastEnders actress Samantha Womack has said she has been plunged into a “living hell” since the controversial baby cot death/swap story line and is quitting the soap. William Hill is offering Sandra at 9/1 and David at 10/1 while Ladbrokes is offering Barry Beckham at 150/1, Becky Beckham at 50/1, Milan at 66/1 and Galaxy at 500/1. The name Angel was also on people’s lips soon after the announcement. Mind you – there may be one clue to help prospective punters. David famously has the names of all his family tattooed on his body – there isn’t much space left so that could mean we are looking for something very short.

Beckham baby this year at odds of 6/1. Ladbrokes are now offering 10/11 for a girl and 5/6 for a boy, while William Hill is offering 5/6 for both a boy or a girl and 50/1 for multiple births. and that, given the type of cancer it was, he felt that the odds were that he had beaten the disease. The 66year-old has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Gordon Gekko in last year’s Wall Street:Money Never Sleeps and will start filming Liberace in May/June.
The exhibition in Derby will open on February 26th – 100 years almost to the day since the Titanic’s owners, the White Star Line, placed an order with bone china company Royal Crown Derby to supply items for the ship’s first class restaurant. The company still has the
1911 pattern book with the design of the crockery, which was to be exclusive to the Titanic. The order was for 600 dinner plates, 150 soup bowls, 150 breakfast plates, 100 salad plates, 150 breakfast cups and saucers and 100 teacups and saucers. Just one plate survived the 1912 disaster when the ship
sank after hitting an iceberg, which is housed in Southampton Museum. The exhibition in Derby will also feature memorabilia from the Titanic and sister ship the Olympic and plans are underway to commemorate the centenary of the disaster next year.

iPhone hacker publishes secret PlayStation 3 key
Global drop in spam e-mail is 'short lived'
The PlayStation 3's security has been broken by hackers, potentially allowing anyone to run any software including pirated games - on the console.
A recently observed global decline in spam e-mail could prove to be short lived, researchers say. A network of infected computers used to produce spam has sprung back to life after a lull of several weeks. The Rustock botnet - as it is known - mysteriously stopped sending spam emails in early December, resulting in a massive decline. But according to security firm NetWitness, it restarted activity early on Monday (Jan 10th). Overall spam levels are still below their levels in August 2010, when Rustock began to wind down its activity. The reason for the lull was
not immediately apparent, Alex Cox of NetWitness said. Those controlling Rustock do not appear to have made major strategic changes to their spamming campaigns, he added. "As best we can tell, they took a holiday," said Mr Cox. "The people running Rustock are running a business - albeit an illegitimate one - so maybe they needed time off too." Rustock's reawakening has also been detected by security firm Symantec
Hosted Services. According to Paul Wood, a senior analyst at the firm, Rustock is now pumping out more than a quarter of all spam circulating worldwide. On Monday alone it was expected to have sent out 67 billion junk e-mails, he said. Rather than the spammers enjoying a Christmas break, he believes the lull in Rustock's activity was most likely because the botnet owners rented it out to new spammers.
A collective of hackers recently showed off a method that could force the system to reveal secret keys used to load software onto the machine. A US hacker, who gained
notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone, has now used a similar method to extract the PS3's master key and publish it online.Sony declined to comment on the hack.

Button teams up with Lance Armstrong for a bike ride in Hawaii Jenson Button took the opportunity while holidaying in Hawaii to go on a ride with cycling legend Lance Armstrong and the Formula 1 driver impressed.
Former Tour de France champion Armstrong and 2009 F1 world champion Button got along so well that they planned on swimming together during the course of the weekend.
The two first rode together before the weekend as part of Armstrong’s training regime ahead of his season
Both men are avid tweeters and Armstrong regularly invites people along for a ride, and that means hundreds can turn up, and normally do.
Armstrong told the American-Statesman: “It went well. The kid can hammer. We had a great ride.” The McLaren Mercedes driver wrote on Twitter: “Great day on the bike today with Lance Armstrong.”

Vettel scoops another award Red Bull Racing man Sebastian Vettel has been named the European Sportsman of the Year by members of the International Sports Press Association (AISP). successful driver in the history of the sport, who has claimed the accolade four times back in 2003, 2002, 2001 and somewhat controversially 1994. Commenting on rumours about Vettel leaving for Ferrari, team manager Helmut Marko had this to say to Bild newspaper: “It’s only natural for a race driver to dream of Ferrari, and for Ferrari to want a great driver like Sebastian. “He would have to be stupid to go there with Fernando Alonso. We are the world championship team, and as long as we offer Sebastian a package that is better than the others, he’s not going to leave just because of a mythical history.”

Last gasp equaliser denies Wolfie spoils Deano’s party Malaga three points Malaga 1 - 1 Athletic Bilbao. A much improved performance from Malaga After the three nil home defeat by Sevilla in the Copa Del Rey last Wednesday, Malaga were looking to bounce back knowing that they have the prospect of playing Barcelona and Valencia away as their next two games. Julio Baptista was introduced to the fans in the week but unfortunately his transfer from Roma was not finalised in time for the kick off. However Malaga gave full league debuts to their new signings, goalkeeper Asenjo, Demichelis, Camacho and Italian Maresca. The first half was a game of cat and mouse, with both sides more intent on not conceding than going forward, however Malaga were the better side. Apono and Duda both went close with chances but just couldn't convert, so they went into halftime on level terms. Shortly after the break Malaga keeper Asenjo made an excellent save to deny Muniain. The game then sparked into life in the

last fifteen minutes with Rondon and Apono missing chances that should have seen Malaga go 2-0 up and seal the game. On 81 minutes Malaga made the breakthrough that they deserved after a good spell of pressure- a corner from Duda found the head of Demichelis to glance the ball in the far corner which
looked enough to seal the three important points. However, in the dying seconds of added time Demichelis was harshly ajudged to have bought down Llorente at the other end. From the resulting free kick from Gabilondo, Martinez rose to meet the ball and headed past Asenjo leaving Malaga's manager
Pelligrini tearing his hair out. This was one of Malaga's best team performances but two points dropped. Malaga travel to the Camp Nou next Sunday (16th) to take on high flying Barcelona, kicking off at 9pm.
On Saturday Oosthuizen was joint leader overnight with Markus Brier but the Austrian soon fell by the way side on Sunday, as did England’s Chris Wood and Spain’s Manuel Quiros, who both only managed pars and it finished with an 18 under par three way tie. The game went to a play-off and although Oosthuizen had the worst drive out of the trio, his second shot landed in best position with a ten footer for birdie, Woods was 20 feet from the hole and Quiros just off the green. Oosthuizen duly holed out for his birdie and the win. Scotland’s Steven O’Hara played an impeccable round
On his victory, he added: “It means it's number three and that equals one or two records. I want to win a third one [in a row] next year." Yorkshire's Winstanley, 29, was proud of his performance, despite falling short against the top seed.He said afterwards: "The better man won on the night, he deserves it. But it was nice to see the man with the beard shake."
"I had to dig deep," Lincolnshire's Adams, 54, told BBC Sport afterwards. "Deano had me in all sorts of problems.I thought 'what do I have to do now?'” Suppliers of trophies for all sports and pastimes andalucia

Oozing success Oosthuizen does it again on home soil South African Louis Oosthuizen claimed the title for the Africa Open in East London, South Africa, at the weekend. A birdie on the first play-off hole was just enough for the world champion to clinch the victory win.
Martinº “Wolfie” Adams clinched his third BDO World Darts title after overcoming a spirited challenge from Lakeside debutant Dean Winstanley. 'Wolfie', the defending champion, looked to be in all kinds of trouble when he trailed 5-4, but he drew on all his experience to triumph 7-5. He made a strong start, taking a 2-0 lead, including a 161 checkout. But Winstanley recovered and went 4-3 and then 5-4 ahead but his nerve failed and Adams capitalised for victory.

with a total of seven birdies and no bogeys, managing to card a 66 and holding the clubhouse lead on 16 under, ultimately he settled for a joint share of fourth place with Charl Schwartzel and Jaco van Zyl, two local players. In Maui, Jonathan Byrd was flying high after managing to hold off Robert Garrigus to win the opening game of the year at the PGA Hyundai tournament again in a play-off. Both players
made par as they played the 18th on the first extra hole, but Garrigus could no longer maintain the pace at the second as he missed a fourfooter for par handing over the crown to his rival, Byrd. "I'm pretty overwhelmed, probably, is the best word to describe it," the American said, after earning a cheque of $1.12 million. “It's definitely the biggest tournament I've ever won. I've won some great tournaments but this is the
It seems that McDowell’s brand new clubs were working well for him after he posted 24 under and saw a nine-footer for birdie at the last hole, just slide past leaving him to settle for third place on his own. The US Open Champion showed his usual sparkle with a flawless course record 62 with six birdies on the front nine and a further five coming on the way home. A great start for the Northern Irishman who told reporters in Maui that his goal was to become World No1 this year.

Have a chuckle at the expense of the Aussies What do you get if you cross the Aussie cricket team with an OXO cube ? A laughing stock. The Aussie bobsleigh team have asked the Aussie cricket team for a meeting. They want to ask their advice about.. going downhill so fast! What’s the difference between Ricky Ponting and a funeral director ? A funeral director doesn’t keep losing the ashes. What do you call an Australian with a champagne bottle? A waiter. What did the spectator miss when he went to the toilet ? The entire Australian innings. Why can’t Australian blokes take their girlfriends to the cricket ? They eat all the grass.

Babel charged over Twitter attack Ryan Babel has been charged with improper conduct by the FA after he tweeted a mocked-up picture of referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt. The Liverpool winger criticised Webb's handling of Sunday's third-round tie. He wrote: 'And they call him one of the best referees. That's a joke. SMH.' (SMH is an abbreviation for 'shake my head) but it was the picture of Webb which caused most furore. In another tweet, he added: 'My apology if they take my posted pic seriously. ‘

Bellamy hurt in nightclub brawl Craig Bellamy could be questioned by police after the Wales striker was left 'battered and bruised' following an alleged brawl outside a nightclub in Cardiff last weekend. The 31year-old firebrand was said to have been set upon by a gang of five men during an attack in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to a report today. The 'bruised' on-loan Manchester City star managed to escape from the violence, making a getaway in a taxi before the player's friends were involved in another fight moments later, leaving two men with facial injuries - one was said to be a policeman's son.

"It's a terrible shock. He was a very good champion in the era when we had Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis," British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith said. Mason became the British heavyweight champion in 1989, and hung up his gloves in 1994 with a career record of 37 wins from 38 contests. His sole defeat in the ring came at the hands of compatriot Lennox Lewis in 1991 when the pair fought for the British and European belts.
Europe's player-captain Colin Montgomerie felt that players on the Asian team will benefit from the 7-9 reverse suffered in the 5th Royal Trophy Golf 2011 on Sunday. Going into the final day down 2-6, Montgomerie's victory over Kim Kyung-Tae and inspiring presence saw Europe retain the trophy with a 7-1 victory in the singles at the Black Mountain golf course. "It is all about how you respond to setbacks like that. If the Asian Team grows stronger as a result of what they are going through, the negative feelings will soon be forgotten."
