British couple ordered to demolish home A British couple in Torrox are having to pay a heavy price for ignoring local urban planning regulations.
They were ordered to stop building the house in January 2004, but ignored the order and the house was completed in July that year.
The Council fined the couple €73,092 which they appealed against. The Council then opened
proceedings for the “reestablishment of infringed urban legality” which led to the demolition order.

Meanwhile a number of Britons in different parts of Andalucia are still battling to save their homes which
were unwittingly purchased or built in the belief that they were fully legal.

A court found them guilty of using a municipal licence issued for the restoration of a 24m2 casa de campo to build a 240 m2 house. The couple bought the 1,451 m2 plot of nonbuildable land in
September 2000 and obtained a licence to restore the house which was in ruins, on the recommendation of the municipal architect who testified that the couple did not plan to add to the original construction.

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Be nice to someone!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Last week, a friend of mine that I haven't seen for a while sent me one of those emails that you're supposed to send on to around three thousand of your closest friends. It was about how much it can brighten someone’s day just by you saying something nice. It might just be “that jumper really suits you” or “you've lost weight” and it occurred to me how little we all say just a few kind words to our neighbours, friends or just someone in the street. I was out one day and saw someone in a dress that I really liked, it might seem a bit forward but I asked her where she got it as I liked it so much. She said that her husband had bought it for her so she didn't know where it had come from but she had been feeling a bit down that morning and I'd really cheered up her day for her. Worth it? I think so! I have a problem inasmuch as I can't go into La Trocha Shopping centre without going into the dunnes Stores there to see what bargains they have – and they have a sale on right now. I often buy my jumpers at this time of year for next year, but they have T-shirts for €3 (great for work now under fleeces) and really nice dresses from €12 plus children’s clothes and household bargains. I met a friend in there who had armfuls of stuff too – so you can socialise and save money at the same time.

Arrest of suspect eases tension in Murcia The arrest of a man on Monday in connection with the beating of the Murcia regional government's culture chief, Pedro Alberto Cruz , has eased the political tension which has been growing since he was attacked on Saturday. Sr Cruz was set upon by three men shouting “sobrinisimo”, referring to the fact that he is the nephew of regional premier Ramon Luis Valcarcel, who has insisted that the assault was politically motivated. Sr Cruz had severe facial injuries and spent Saturday night in the UCI at the
regional capital's Reina Sofia hospital. He has since been moved to a private room. Police arrested José David Baño Llorente, who has links with an extreme left-wing group connected with soccer. He was charged with participating in violent disturbances at Real Murcia's Rico Pérez
stadium in 2008. Sr Valcarcel, who belongs to the Popular Party, has accused the government of "painting a target" on its officials' backs by attacking spending cuts made by his government. The PP's number two, María Dolores de Cospedal,

Arms arrest Police revealed on Tuesday that a Frenchman, J.P.A., aged 45, had been arrested in Fuengirola. They discovered a cache of weapons in a garage which is believed to belong to the Marseilles mafia. The haul included sub machineguns with silencers, ammunition and vehicles. The Frenchman had a European arrest warrant lodged against him.
State of alarm ends The government has not extended the state of alarm imposed on December 4th when a mass walk-out by the country's air controllers brought airports to a standstill and ruined the long weekend vacation plans of some 600,000 travellers. The government put the airports under
military control until January 15th, even though the controllers had signed a pledge that the action would not be repeated. The state of alarm was lifted at midnight last Saturday but some 100 military air controllers have been authorised by the Defence Ministry to
work in civilian air control towers. The government is to award the Air Force the Civil Order of Merit for the work done by the 330 military air controllers who took over during the six weeks the state of alarm was in force.

National News Police swoop nets 10 post-ceasefire The Guardia Civil and the National Police arrested 10 people early on Tuesday morning in their first operation against the Basque terrorist group ETA since it called a permanent ceasefire on Monday, January 10th. Nine were arrested in Pamplona and nearby towns in Navarre province and the tenth was arrested in Alava, in the Basque Country. The authorities said the police have evidence that they have been sending orders and documents from ETA to the rest of the organisations that form the pro-ETA Basque Left known as the abertzale. One of those arrested was the son of prominent Basque separatist politician Txelui Moreno,

Barcelona plant wins Nissan pick-up The Japanese company Nissan announced on Tuesday that it will manufacture its new pickup model at its plant in Barcelona.
Nissan had announced in December that it planned to close the plant because of high production costs, but now some 3,000 workers will have their jobs guaranteed for the next ten years. Barcelona was competing against South Africa and Morocco for the Nissan contract.
Both prime minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba have said that they will be satisfied with nothing less than an abandonment of arms and the disbanding of the group.

Guardia Civil chief who helped quell 1981 coup dies Lt General José Aramburu Topete, who as director general of the Guardia Civil was in charge of quelling the 1981 attempted coup by some of his own men, has died at his home in Madrid. He was 92. Minutes after Lt Col Antonio Tejero and several other Guardia burst into Parliament, firing their weapons at the ceiling and walls, on February 23rd 1981, the then Lt Col Aramburu arrived at the gate to the building and asked to speak to Tejero. When the latter appeared,
Aramburu said: “Lieutenant Colonel, abandon this madness at once.” When Tejero threatened to shoot him, Aramburu went for his pistol but the men accompanying Tejero aimed their rifles at him. The general then told
dozens of Guardia who were milling around outside the building to get on the buses that had brought them “and go back where you came from”. After some of the men threatened him with their weapons, Aramburu
retired to the Palace Hotwl which was the temporary HQ of the security forces trying t0 put down the revolt. Tejero surrendered the following morning after King Juan Carlos ordered the armed forces to honour their oath of loyalty to the Crown and
Parliament. Aramburu had fought alongside Franco in the Civil War and on the Russian Front with the Blue Division during WW2. However, he welcomed the transition to democracy after the dictator's death and swore the oath of loyalty to the
1978 Constitution. After the attempted coup, he was promoted to Lt General. As director general of the Guardia Civil from 1980 to 1983, he guided the corps through some of the most turbulent postFranco years.
Judge rules against Ryanair Consumer A Barcelona court has ruled that Ryanair cannot oblige passengers to print out boarding group makes passes when booking tickets online or charge them €40 when they fail to do so. complaint Judge Barbara Maria Cordoba found the contract clause “abusive and therefore null”. She said Ryanair was subject to international, European and national air navigation
laws which oblige airlines to issue tickets for passengers. The ruling came after a Spanish lawyerlodged a complaint after being fined for not printing out a boarding
pass for a flight to Italy. The judge said that her ruling was not firm and could not oblige Ryanair to stop applying the clause and she expected the case to be taken to the European
Court of Justice. She said Spanish passengers now had a first judicial ruling to back their demands for the return of the penalty for not printing the pass.Ryanair will appeal.
Spain goes after Nazi war criminal High Court judge Ismael Moreno has requested an international arrest warrant for suspected Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk, who he has accused of being responsible for the deaths of Spaniards in the Flossenburg concentration camp where he was a guard. The 90-year-old, who is currently on trial in Germany accused of being a guard at the Sobibor camp in occupied Poland in 1943, where an
estimated 250,000 people died, denies the charges. Judge Moreno has been investigating the issue since July 2008 at the
request of several Spaniards who survived the camp. According to his ruling, 60 of the 155 Spaniards
who were held at Flossenburg died. Ukrainian-born Mr Demjanjuk was extradited to Germany from the US in 2009.
Fire destroys a Leroy Merlin store The Leroy Merlin store on an industrial estate in Majadahonda, Madrid, was destroyed by a fire which broke out late on Monday night. More than 15 fire engines managed to stop the blaze spreading to a paint store and Mercedes sales outlet situated
nearby. The fire fighters said there were no human casualties because of the lateness of the hour. Guardia Civil specialists began their investigation into the blaze on Tuesday to find out if it had been set intentionally.
The consumers association Facua has made a formal complaint against the electricity companies Endesa, Iberdrola, Gas Natural Fenosa, E.On, Hidrocantabrico and the small distributors operating in the rest of Spain, accusing them of failing to install digital meters for 30% of their clients before the end of 2010, as they had agreed. Facua said more than half of the electricity meters in Spain were over 15 years old and had not been checked to ensure
that they were still measuring consumption accurately. As a result, the organisation said, many households are probably paying more than they need to. In its complaint, Facua accuses the electricity companies of delaying the installation of the modern meters “while they continue to make money out of the rental of the old ones”. It also accuses the ministry of “passivity” for allowing this state of affairs to continue.
Spain changes course on bonds In a statement on Monday, the Treasury announced that it had decided to cancel an auction of longterm bonds and instead distribute debt through a group of banks as it sought to sustain momentum generated by last week's bond sale. The Treasury said it would forgo sales of the 10- and 15-year bonds it had been planning for Thursday. Instead, it will distribute a new 10-year
benchmark bond through a syndicate of banks. A spokesman for Lloyds Banking in London said it was the low-risk option, “but given the market backdrop it’s the sensible decision.” Spain carried out a successful bond auction last week, helping to soothe fears that the new year would begin with market attacks on its finances.

No money to help smokers give up Spain’s regional governments have sent a firm message to health minister Leire Pajin - if central government wants smokers to kick the weed then it will have to bear the brunt of the associated costs. There are an estimated 12 million smokers in Spain and anti-smoking drugs would cost an estimated €300 per person, which amounts to €3,600 million. Some of it would come from the health ministry, and the regional governments would have to come up with the rest. The regional governments of Cantabria, Asturias,
Andalucia and the Basque Country already have programmes to help some smokers – but not all – on the grounds that they help to reduce health care costs, but the other regions have said they would have to cut back other, more essential services to help smokers. They have said they would not be prepared to sacrifice other services and
central government would have to shoulder the burden of its plans.

The web pages belong to criminal organisations based in Eastern Europe working with similar groups in the rest of Europe and the US. Inflation at highest for two years The National Statistics Institute said on Friday that the consumer price index rose 0.6% last year to 3%, its highest level since October 2008. One of the main reasons for the rise was the price of oil, which hit $100 a barrel on Friday. However, the government's austerity measures, which included a hike in valued added tax from July and higher tobacco taxes, also had an impact. Public sector workers who have had an average 5% cut in wages are particularly badly hit. MADRID
Spanish tourists safely home The last of the Spanish tourists who were caught in Tunisia were all home by Sunday night on flights laid on by tour operators Iberojet and Solplan, and Tunisair. The tourists were trapped at the airport which was surrounded by soldiers and were in little danger from people rioting in the capital. At press time, the foreign ministry was arranging to bring home some 680 Spaniards who live in the country. Spain was working together with other EU countries to repatriate their nationals. BILBAO
Former PM cleared The Prosecutors Office said on Saturday that it can find no reason to open an investigation into former prime minister Felipe Gonzalez as requested by the Basque left-wing Ezker Batua (EB). In a newspaper interview last November, Sr Gonzalez said he’d had the opportunity “to order the liquidation of the high command of the Basque terrorist group ETA” and still wonders if he was right not to do so. EB said the Prosecutors Office had “put reasons of State above the truth”.

State of Victoria threatened by rains The rains which had laid waste to Queensland are now threatening the state of Victoria where flood waters continue to rise. The southern town of Horsham has been split in two by water and an eightyear-old boy who disappeared in a flooded waterhole near the town of Shepparton on Monday morning has not been found. There have been electricity cuts as power stations have been flooded, and more than 3,500 people have evacuated their homes in the north
central part of the state. Sandbags have been stacked up to try to withstand the waters, which were expected to peak late last night (Tuesday). Horsham Mayor Michael Ryan said: "You can't control nature totally, but I think to the extent we had about three or four days' warning and we have an experienced emergency
team, I think we're going as well as we can." Another official in Horsham, David Eltringham, said the town was expecting "a once-ina-100-year flood". Further north, at least 30 people died in floods in Queensland. Ten people are still missing, and recovery efforts are proving slow. The government has warned that the floods in
Queensland could be the country's most expensive natural disaster ever. Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the country needed private industry to help the recovery and reconstruction effort. She said she had decided to bring together 10 leading Australian business people to form a business round-table to assist with corporate support.
Berlusconi sex allegations widen
Haiti urged to arrest 'Baby Doc' Duvalier
In a document published on Monday on the website of Italy's lower house of parliament, prosecutors alleged that prime minister Silvio Berlusconi had sex with a "significant number" of young prostitutes.
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have urged the Haitian government to arrest and prosecute former President Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, who has just returned to Haiti, for abuses committed during his 1971-86 leadership. Mr Duvalier, 59, explained his unexpected return, saying he had "come to help" after last year's earthquake. Baby Doc is accused of massive corruption, repression and human rights abuses during his 1971-1986 rule. Critics allege he embezzled millions of dollars from the impoverished Caribbean nation, a charge he denies. Mr Duvalier was forced to flee into exile by a popular uprising in 1986. He has lived a life of luxury in the Cote d'Azur in France since then, although he was never granted formal political asylum. Human Rights Watch Americas director Jose Miguel Vivanco said in a statement: "Duvalier's return to Haiti should be for one purpose only - to face justice.”
In a request to search some of Mr Berlusconi's properties, they cited allegations that he had paid the women or given them free use of apartments. The document includes allegations that Nicole Minetti, a former dental hygienist of Mr Berlusconi's who is now a regional official, was involved with several others in procuring the young prostitutes for him.
prosecutors are investigating whether Mr Berlusconi paid to have sex with a 17-year-old nightclub dancer.
It details claims that a number of young women were put up in apartments in Milano Due, an American-style suburb that Mr Berlusconi built during the 1970s. Ms Minetti, who is under investigation, has denied the accusations.
Mr Berlusconi, 74, has been embroiled in a series of sex scandals since separating from his second wife, Veronica Lario.
Prostitution is not a crime in Italy, but paying for or helping arrange sex with a prostitute under the age of 18 is an offence. The
He said in a broadcast on Sunday that he had been in a stable relationship since splitting with Ms Lario: "It's absurd to even
think that I would pay to have sex with a woman. I would consider it degrading." The latest revelations come at a time when Mr Berlusconi's government has been struggling to maintain its majority. The prime minister, whose five-year term is due to run until 2013, narrowly survived a confidence vote in December.

Record one million homes foreclosed Foreclosure tracker RealtyTrac has said banks repossessed a record one million US homes in 2010, and could surpass that number this year, because about five million homeowners were at least two months behind on their mortgage payments. Nevada had the highest foreclosure rate, with one in 11 housing units receiving foreclosure notices, and RealtyTrac said more than half the nation's foreclosures occurred in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois and Michigan.

FACTORY CLEARANCE! Tunisia unrest echoes across North Africa The revolution in Tunisia had repercussions throughout North Africa on Monday as an Egyptian and a Mauritanian became the latest of six North Africans to set themselves on fire in an imitation of the selfimmolation that set off the uprising in Tunisia. In Cairo, a 50-year-old restaurant owner set himself ablaze outside the Parliament building on Monday morning, while another man in Mauritania was setting fire to himself in his parked car near Parliament in Nouakchott around the same time. On Sunday, an unemployed man staged the fourth attempted selfimmolation in Algeria since the street demonstrations exploded in Tunis last week. Their actions did not provoke
widespread protests, as the victims had apparently intended. In Tunis, more than a thousand protesters took to the streets in the city centre in an attempt to sustain their revolution, raging against the domination of the newly formed unity government by members of ousted President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali’s ruling party. They called for the complete eradication of the old ruling party, and complained that outlawed parties like the once
powerful Islamist groups or the Tunisian Communists were still barred from participating. The opposition leaders included in the new government said the revolution had collided with reality. They pointed out that after 23 years of Mr. Ben Ali’s one-party dictatorship, it was impossible to find qualified people outside his party who could take over quickly enough to stabilize the country and hold free elections.

The funeral was attended by hundreds of people from all over Ireland including the Irish prime minister. Four men have been detained in connection with the murder.
Time to grow up! Yeates David Cameron said in a speech on Monday that it was “time to grow up” in the public sector, as he announced the biggest shake-up in the National Health Service since it was founded. He said that the plans for reform offered a “once in a lifetime chance” to make it work efficiently and it should be about people’s lives rather than money.

A man has become the first person in the UK to be successfully prosecuted for riding a Segway scooter on a pavement. Philip Coates, 51, used his Segway motor scooter to travel from his home in Cudworth to Barnsley. His lawyer had challenged the prosecution's definition of the Segway as a motor vehicle after he was charged under the Highways Act 1865. But a judge fined Mr Coates £75 and ordered him to pay £250 in costs. At Barnsley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday District Judge Michael Rosenberg ruled that the Segway was a motor vehicle under the meaning of the law and, therefore, it was an offence to ride one on the pavement. Mr Coates, of Park Avenue, Cudworth, bought his £5,000 Segway, which has a top speed of 12.5mph, after trying one out during a holiday in Florida. He was charged after he was seen by a civilian police inquiry officer riding on a pavement in Pontefract Road, Barnsley, in February. Segway riders say that they are banned from using them on the roads but they are classed as motor vehicles so can’t use them on the pavement either.

Mr Cameron also said that he didn’t care where the money came from private sector or companies - as long as there was a free health service available to all patients. There will be more choice for patients as to where they get treated and there is to be no limit on the income hospitals can receive from treating
private patients. There will be plans to protect some essential services but, in the main, there will be no financial bail-outs for hospital trusts that fail to budget properly. Doctors, nurses and unions say that the scheme is a huge risk and it will mean that there will be some very good hospital trusts but there will be some very poor ones which will mean a two tier service. Also, some GPs have said that they do not want the responsibility of running their own budgets. Trusts will have scope to spend, budget and make savings where they can that can be used at a later date. Mr Cameron stated that the NHS could not afford to modernise at this time.
Dock jobs safe The building of two new aircraft carriers in Portsmouth has reached its second stage of construction, that of building the stern of HMS Elizabeth, assuring jobs for local people for years to come. The two carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, were saved from the defence cuts in October last year but only HMS Queen Elizabeth is
likely to see service. HMS Prince of Wales is to be built but not kitted out and will be mothballed for future use. The new carriers are to replace the 22,000 tonne invincible class carriers HMS Invincible, HMS Ark Royal and HMS Illustrious which are all to be decomissioned by 2014. The Queen Elizabeth is expected to enter service in 2019
Hidden con of 99p shops So called bargain shops in the UK don’t always play fair. The chain of shops known as “99p Shops” have admitted that they have agreed with certain manufacturers to make their goods smaller to enable the shops to sell them for under a pound. For example, a bar of Toblerone chocolate is 30 grammes smaller than found in other shops. The company director of the 99p shops, Hussein Lalani, said that he bought stock from companies that had gone bankrupt for a fraction of the normal cost and also goods that had been rebranded with new packaging from shops that do not want to sell the old
style goods even though they were still well in date like shampoos. He added that bargains never went out of fashion and due to the current economic crisis in the UK the shops were seeing more and more middle class shoppers through the doors. Because of this, he said they had started stocking items such as balsamic vinegar and sun dried tomatoes as this is what his new customers were demanding. Asked if he had to keep a lot of 1p coins in his tills he replied: “No, the average spend is five items so we have a lot of 5p coins instead!”
appeal The parents of Joanna Yeates, the landscape architect murdered four weeks ago, have been on television appealing to anyone to come forward if they thought that they had seen anything even slightly suspicious. Miss Yeates’ mother suggested that possibly someone may have noticed someone reacting strangely to news of her death by either trying to justify what the murderer had done, being exceptionally quiet or even over-vociferous about it.She asked people to think if they knew someone who had made an unusual journey on the day of Joanna’s death or had seen a car moved at a time different to usual. David and Theresa Yeates believe their daughter knew her killer and that somebody must know something about the perpetrator. The parents have said they just want to end the agony of not knowing who was responsible for their daughter’s death
Peer goes on trial Lord Taylor of Warwick full name John David Beckett Taylor, aged 58 - is on trial at Southwark Crown Court for false, deceptive and misleading expenses claims. The peer was jeered as he arrived at the court on Tuesday where he is accused of claiming that his main residence was in Oxford, claiming £11,277 in respect of having to stay overnight in the capital and travelling expenses when his real main residence was in fact in London. Unlike MPs who receive a salary, life peers only get paid expenses and Lord Taylor’s defence team claimed that peers consider that it is not dishonest to make such claims. However, the peer agreed that the property in Oxford was in fact where his half-nephew lived, that he had never lived or stayed at the property nor did he have any financial or legal interest in the property whatsoever.

Former premier to be investigated Andalucia’s High Court has ordered the Junta to open proceedings against former premier Manuel Chaves for not disqualifying himself in the concession of a subsidy of €10 million to a company in Huelva which employed his daughter as a legal adviser. The subsidy was approved in January 2009, three months before prime minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero appointed Sr Chaves as third deputy prime minister in charge of liaising between the central government in Madrid and the regional governments. The Partido Popular lodged an official complaint which the Junta refused to pursue.
The PP then appealed to the High Court which has ruled that the Junta’s decision to file the complaint was “arbitrary and unjustified”.
Seventeen Guardia Civil officers were finally brought to trial last week, accused of demanding money from travellers at Malaga airport to turn a blind eye when they tried to enter the country with unauthorised food products or articles subject to tax.
The Junta is to appeal the ruling. A spokesman said it was nothing more than an administrative matter which the PP was trying to convert into a scandal for political purposes.
Their behaviour was so notorious, the authorities heard, that the Chinese community recommended fellow countrymen to travel to Malaga with a €50 note in their hands to avoid trouble at the airport.
Junta to compensate 94 women The Junta de Andalucia is to compensate 94 women who have been able to prove the abuses they suffered at the hands of Franco regime during the years from 1936 to 1950. More than 206 applications were made for the compensation of €1,700 which the Junta offered three months ago to women who could provide documentary proof of the abuses inflicted on them for having been on the wrong side during the Civil War.
A spokesman said 25 applications had been turned down because they referred to people not registered anywhere in Andalucia, while another 37 did not provide the necessary information about parents and relatives. Fifty applicants have been asked to
provide fuller documentary proof. The spokesman said all those accepted were women in their nineties, most of whom had been encouraged to apply for the compensation by their grandchildren. Most of the women had had their
heads shaved, were forced to drink large amounts of castor oil or were expelled from school for belonging to Republican families.
The US Air Force accidentally dropped four nuclear bombs over this
area in Almería in 1966, when two of its planes collided in mid-air. The bombs did not go off, but two of them released part of their nuclear load, and 50,000 cubic metres of land are still contaminated with plutonium. The government asked the US last summer to take away
the radioactive earth, because Spain lacks proper storage facilities. The clean-up had an estimated cost of €31 million, and Madrid expected Washington to foot half of the bill, as well as provide technical assistance. Last November,
The matter came to the notice of the authorities in November 2005 when a Norwegian couple reported that two Guardia Civil had asked them for €50 for not inspecting the food products their daughter
had brought with her. A Malaga judge authorised the airport authorities to redirect a security camera at the customs area in Terminal 2 as well as the installation of a hidden tape recorder in the Customs office where the extortion appeared to be taking place. During the following 19 days, 11 incidents were detected involving Asian, Israeli and Moroccan travellers, as well as one Belgian who had €15,000 in his suitcase. The number of incidents were allowed to increase over a period of weeks until the Guardia Civil involved were all clearly identified. The prosecution is asking for three to three years and nine months suspension for the men, as well as fines equivalent to the total amount of money extorted.
STOLEN!
Only one claimed to have been raped. The Junta made the offer to “repay a moral debt”.
Govt gets tough about nuclear accident The Spanish government has told the United States that it must complete the clean-up of Palomares and transfer any remaining plutonium "without further ado."

Although more than 32,800 jobs were lost in the tourism sector in Andalucia during the past two years, figures for last year show an increase in the number of arrivals as well as in the number of nights per stay. A spokesman for the Workers Commissions union said although it seemed contradictory, 2010 might have been a bad year for job creation but a good year for the number of tourists. He said there had been a small rise in the number of
foreign tourists, which had been dropping the previous two years, although the number of Spanish tourists had dropped because of the worsening economic situation. He said that
until last year Spanish tourists had been making up for the drop in foreign visitors. He said there was general optimism in the sector that the figures would continue to improve this year.

Museum tribute to John Lennon A 19th century mansion in Almeria which was rented by several famous stars – including John Lennon - in the 1960s when the area was a kind of mini-Hollywood has been converted into a photographic museum recording the city's years of fame. Lennon spent six weeks in Almeria in 1966 filming Richard Lester's “How I Won The War”. He stayed for two weeks in a small apartment before moving to the mansion, called Santa Isabel, from early October to early November. He was joined by his first wife, Cynthia, and Ringo Starr and his wife to celebrate his birthday on October 9th. Lennon was to say later that the house inspired him to wrote Strawberry Fields Forever because it reminded him of the house and huge garden in Liverpool where he used to attend parties with his friends when he was a child. In 1999, journalist and Beatle fan Aldolfo Iglesias came across the story about the “house in Almeria” mentioned by Lennon and finally located it.

End in sight for Russian sailors Seventeen Russian sailors have been stranded on two trawlers for over three years while Russia and Mauritania dispute their ownership. Mauritania claimed it bought the ships at an auction but Russia claimed they were stolen. The trouble began when the trawlers put into Huelva port for maintenance work. Then the embargoes began to arrive. The Russians won their claim in court two years ago but it’s only now that they are taking steps to get the boats – and the sailors - back home. UTRERA, SEVILLA
It had fallen into disuse once Almeria's “years in the sun” were over and was in a very abandoned state when Iglesias found it. To save it, he came up with the idea of turning it into a cultural association called “Lennon Almeria Forever” in memory of the singer but the Almeria City Council had to take over because of the €6 million investment needed for such a project. The council decided to broaden the scope to include all the other big names who had filmed in Almeria and the resulting Casa del Cine (Cinema House) opened last week with a special corner

ast week, we ended with former PM José Maria Aznar cleaning up the corruption he inherited from Felipe Gonzalez. The Socialists have been blaming Aznar for everything they haven't managed to get right for the past seven years so let's jump on that bandwagon and blame him for the high levels of corruption at a regional and local level. You see, he was so successful at cleaning up the central government in Madrid that the political parties had to go elsewhere to line their pockets. And where else could they go to but the regions – especially Andalucia.
depressing. The politicians are so keen to get their hands on the spoils that they forget any political ideals they might have had. We had the case of the Falange which won the most seats in the last local election in a small town in the Axarquia but not enough to form a government. So they joined forces with the Izquierda Unida – United Left, which is just another name for the Communist Party. Seventy odd years ago they were killing each other off, often in truly barbarous ways, in the struggle to save Spain from the Reds or the Fascists, depending on your political point of view. I can't think of an unholier alliance.
T

T
he sad truth is that the part of Spain we all adore is generally regarded as the most corrupt region in the country. One of the problems is that the Socialists have governed in Seville for the past 30 years, and in most of the provincial capitals and municipalities as well, so they've been able to do as they please. It looks as if that's about to change – with the polls giving the Partido Popular's Javier Arenas a majority in the regional election in May. If he wins, it remains to be seen if he can - or even wants to - clean up the region, but I thinks it's safe to say that as a good PP man and former minister in the Aznar government he's fully aware of the fact that regional overspending has contributed greatly to the country's current economic woes. And hopefully, like Aznar, he'll put Andalucia's finances in order, which will mean getting rid of an awful lot of public sector workers, all of them Socialists which we hope he will not replace with his own people. Then there are all those companies the Junta has hired over the years to do the work its own people should be doing. At the last count, there were more people working in this “parallel government” than directly for the Junta, and earning more money while they were at it.
H
owever, it's not just Andalucia – the same things have been happening in all the other regions, with the connivance of the two main parties hand-in-glove with smaller local parties. The situation here is really
hen we have the “transfuguistas” fuga means flight and trans in this case means across. It is the name given to those politicians who leave one party for another one which needs one more councillor to be able to form a government. The one who flees does so in order to form part of the group in power (and partake of all the nice “perks” they get) – and to the devil with his or her political beliefs. According to the article I referred to in my last column (For those people who didn't read it, the column was titled La cleptocracia nacional – with cleptocracia being a fusion of kleptomania and democracy, kleptomania being a recurrent urge to steal, typically without regard for need or profit, according to the Oxford English dictionary), this is one of the main pillars of corruption at a local level.
he violent beating of a regional cultural chief over the weekend in Murcia should never be likened to the tragedy that occurred over a week ago in Tucson, Arizona. Unfortunately there are some sectors that are trying to connect the dots, only to add more fuel to the flammable environment. On Monday, police arrested a student, who was identified as being a member of a radical left-wing group, as suspect in the beating of Pedro Alberto Cruz, the cultural commissioner for Murcia ’s Popular Party government. The official was reportedly beaten by three men as he left his house. A witness, who saw the aggression take place from the balcony of his home, identified one of the assailants as José David Baño Lorente, a man between the ages of 25-30 with a past police record who once had to pay a €3,000 fine for possession of drugs during a football match in Alicante in 2008.
W
e'll look at ways of helping to gradually change this next week.
O
pposition leader Mariano Rajoy demanded that the Socialists fire the head of the government’s delegation in Murcia for not doing anything to protect PP officials there, and suggested that the PSOE and the labour unions were responsible for instigating the violence. “We are not going to tolerate any insinuation that the Socialists are responsible, not in Murcia or anywhere else,” said PSOE organization secretary Marcelino Iglesias.

W
hy do people put up with all this? A common attitude in Venezuela where I used to live was – I might be in the same position as them one day so why spoil my future chances of getting rich. There may be an element of that here in Spain but personally I think the real reason is that the Spanish have been ruled too long by despotic kings and dictators to suddenly turn around now and start demanding their political rights. They have more social and economic rights than they've ever had in their history – thanks to governments who were keen to bury the Franco regime as deep as possible. However, democracy is about more than voting in “kind” governments. It's about making yourself heard and the Spanish have had very few rulers – including the current government - who have bothered to let them speak, let alone listen to them. I often wonder what the results would have been if the government had consulted the people about the many “progressive” measures they've introduced – like quickie divorce, legalising some 800,000 illegal immigrants, the ban on teaching religion in state schools, the relaxed abortion law, and so on.
J
osé David Baño Lorente, the suspect, was expected to appear before a judge on Tuesday to give his version of the events. A spokesman for the group Cityboys, of which Baño is a member, said that police have the wrong man. “Our companion is innocent because he was at his home 30 miles away from Murcia at the time of the attack. He doesn’t know who Pedro Alberto Cruz is.” Cityboys, which is considered a left-wing radical group, said that it believed that the PP and the Socialists are using Baño as a scapegoat to downplay the political violence taking place in Murcia .
Javier Arenas
S
ince Christmas, political tensions have rocked Murcia with days of demonstrations organized by angry protesters, with many holding PSOE flags, against the PP-led government of Ramón Luis Valcárcel. On January 12th, a group of demonstrators threw rocks, eggs and firecrackers at the façade of Valcárcel’s home. Two other PP officials were also pelted with eggs and on some internet forums there were angry references posted against the cultural commissioner Cruz. The groups, which the PP has accused the Socialists and other leftist parties of organizing, are angry about government cutbacks in Murcia as well as the high unemployment. After Saturday’s beating incident, the interior ministry has decided to assign a security detail to government officials.
riting in El Mundo, columnist Santiago González tries to make a connection between Murcia and the massacre in Tucson by a lone gunman, who took the lives of several people at a Democratic Party meeting, including a federal judge, and critically wounding Representative Gabrielle Giffords. “Let’s take part in a transposition exercise,” González writes as he quotes from a recent El País editorial condemning the massacre and the Tea Party’s rhetoric. “Instead of reading ‘Tea Party,’ put instead ‘Socialist Party;’ and where it says ‘Tucson massacre’ read instead ‘beating in Murcia’...” In all fairness, González was trying to make a point by criticising the Socialists for blaming the PP for placing the responsibility for the unfortunate incidents in Murcia on their backs. But it is a dangerous precedent that is being set by even suggesting that the Tucson incident could be imported to Spain.
T
he harsh campaign rhetoric is no doubt becoming a common denominator for violence in US society. Tea Party members frequently use expressions when referring to rivals such as “targets,” “aiming for them” and “let’s knock them” off their congressional seats. They may think it is a folksy way of addressing voters, but no doubt they are charged words that seek to inflict hatred.
N
either the Socialists nor the PP have gone so far to incite violence against one another – even though there have been some powerful word exchanges among the two camps in parliamentary debates. Anyone who believes the PP or the Socialists have even crossed that line really lacks perception.

The first thing people notice when entering a room is the floor. If your marble floor is graying from wear and ageing, it will create a dull room. Bringing back the beautiful look of your marble’s natural brilliance will always bring a home back to life.
Tony’s Marble Restoration Service specializes in marble and terrazzo renovation, bringing out your marble floor’s rich natural grain. Regain the brilliant shine your floors once had and make them dazzle once again. You will be amazed at the transformation from your current dull, dingy marble floors to a beautifully restored, better than new appearance. If your floors were not professionally diamond polished after installation, then you’ve probably never seen them at their best. As time goes by, many fine marble floors become worn, stained and damaged. Tony’s Marble Restoration uses modern equipment that can undo years of wear and damage. Most stains are removed, even the ones you thought were permanent.
It is not generally realized that marble is quite fragile and porous. Left untreated, it can wear quite badly very quickly. Therefore, an equally important reason for having the marble renovated is to seal and protect it, and leave the surface on the marble that is not only high gloss, non-slip, and low maintenane, but is considerably harder than the marble itself. The property market on the Costa del Sol is not moving very rapidly at the
moment. Polishing your floors will make your property far more attractive to a potential purchaser. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Tony’s Marble Polishing and Restoration Services have served as possibly the most affordable on the Costa del Sol for over 10 years. Call us now for a no obligation quotation on 620 726 875 and take the first step to brightening up your home and your life.

We are very pleased to be able to let you know that Soxy, the dog that was the Missing! Pet Of The Week last week, is now back at home, safe and well.
Bill Whitehair of Cat and Dog World Kennels in Alhaurin el Grande is doing a sponsored run in on Torremolinos February 6th, in aid of the animals in local municipal pounds. Originally Bill was going to do a half marathon but it has been changed to a 12 km run against the clock. (He is getting a bit half for old too marathons!) Bill and his wife Denise have been my friends since they came to Spain 14 years ago and in all that time they have supported the animal charities out here in many ways. They, like me, are only too aware of some of the awful towards cruelties are and animals incensed at the callous way these poor animals are treated in the municipal pounds , by, as Denise says, “people who should know better, and care more.” Although Cat and Dog World is not a rescue kennel the “ Gift of Life “, which is what they have called the sponsored run, will enable them to rescue just a few of the poor animals waiting for death in the local pounds. They take mainly cats because few rescue centres have the facilities needed for cats.
They care for the cats and obtain their EU pet passport, which takes 7 months. This care is done with the help of Kelly from CHAIN, the Charity for Animals In Need. The animals are then taken back to the UK where CHAIN has kind homes waiting for them. Bill and Denise sent the first six cats back to England at the beginning of 2010 at their own expense but of course this is very costly so CHAIN kindly stepped in and rescued the next six. Hopefully the “Gift of Life” run and its kind sponsors will be able to save many more. Denise says she would love to get the help of bars or clubs etc., who could arrange a fund raising event to fund (around 250 euros) the complete “gift” for one of the animals. If you are able to sponsor the run, no matter how small the amount, please give Denise a ring on 630 197 345 or email her at info@cat-and-dogworld.com Denise , Bill and myself and the animals would be very grateful. (Part two of the “Why Cats Scratch” article will be run next week instead)

Tony Byford I read with amusement the recent piece on your People and Fashion page about the number of unwanted gifts that so many of us receive at Christmas. So can I make a plea to any readers who are now trying to clear space in a cupboard to stash away these items. If you have anything that you don’t want to keep, then just give us a call and we will make arrangements to collect it from you because your
Rafael Ávila My fellow ecologist and independent councillor with the Marbella Town Hall, Javier de Luis, is planning to enter a motion at the Town Hall asking for all public events involving cruelty to animals to be banned and, if they still take place, the perpetrators to be prosecuted. This includes bullfighting, running of the bulls, circuses with animals, merry-go-rounds pulled by ponies etc etc.
John Lambert I read with interest your Wickham’s World last week about the state of the campo roads in the Coin area. We also live on La Caretta and agree that the state of the top road off the main Coin to Cartama road is bad but when you get onto the road that winds all around the campo, the so-called acequia road, it is absolutely appalling, as are some of the roads that branch off from it. I have lived in the area for 10 years and although someone comes along every so often with a load of gravel and a big machine, this doesn’t happen anywhere frequently enough. I was given to understand when we purchased our house that the roads were council owned and are therefore their responsibility. My car has been damaged by these unavoidable pot holes some of which are 9 inches deep and, as you said in your column, are impossible to miss - and I think it’s high time Coin council did something about it, or paid for the damage caused to

What colour are the stars? When I wrote last week about the brightest star Sirius I mentioned that it was a blue/white in colour but have you ever thought about what colour are the stars? Stars vary a great deal in their colour and it is the colour that tells us so much about the individual star. White stars are hotter and usually younger than red stars. Our Sun is slightly yellow in colour which tells us that it is not a particularly hot star and also that it is middle aged. The colours don’t stand out too vividly to us because they are such small points of light and the colour receptors in our eyes are not very good at distinguishing the subtle variations, but using photographs taken through very large telescopes then the colours can be analyzed to tiny fractions of variations thus giving us information about not only the stars age but even its chemical make up.
Coin
both English and Spanish owned vehicles. I hear that there is a committee of La Carreta owners trying to get something done about the roads. Do you have any idea how to get hold of them to join them to bolster their numbers and add a bit more clout? I have been told (by someone who knows about such things) that Coin Council can be supplied with asphalt to do all the country roads in the area free of charge, but then they’d have to properly maintain them afterwards at their own expense. I also hear rumours that the council are trying to get yet more money out of the people living in the area
Stargazing
if they do actually do something about the roads. Perhaps somebody would like to therefore tell me why I pay my rates to the council every year and why we have little meetings “under the pine trees” with the local sheep man after which we end up giving him yet more money to do something about the roads and the drainage systems. Strikes me we keep handing over more and more money and not getting anything for it and, yes, I do know that we’re not the only area of the campo where this is happening. It’s high time the council stopped taking the royal p*** and mended the roads that they are ultimately responsible for.
When a star is young (a few million years old) it tends to shine very brightly more in the blue or white end of the spectrum, but as it gets older then its light and heat become less and its colour changes down through yellow, orange and finally into red. Towards the end of its life a star begins to swell to enormous size and becomes a red giant before either exploding into a supernova or deflating into a white dwarf. We know that this will happen because we can see many stars at various stages of their life so we can make a very good guess as to the life cycle of a star and at this time of the year there is almost the complete life cycle of a star that is visible to the naked eye that you can see for yourself. Go outside after about 9pm and look towards the south and find the giant constellation of Orion. I explained last week that Orion looks like a giant butterfly or bow tie shape in the sky.
The three stars in a perfectly straight line make up the ‘belt’ of Orion. If you look just below the belt toward where Orion’s sword would be hanging then you will notice that there is a fuzzy looking group of stars. This is M42, the famous Orion nebular, a huge ball of hydrogen gas that eventually will form brand new stars. Try looking at it through binoculars and you will be able to see more of the nebulosity. If you now follow the line of Orion’s belt upwards to the right you will come across a very tight group of seven stars, this is the Pleiades cluster. These are baby stars just a few million years old. If you use your binoculars to look at them you will see that there are in fact a few hundred stars all within this group and a very distinct blue in colour, you should also be able to make out the gasses that surround the new stars. Now go back to Orion and look to the star in the upper left hand corner, this is Betelgeuse (beetle-juice). You will see that it is bright red in colour. Betelgeuse is a red giant nearing the end of its life. It is so big that if you brought it down to us and put it where the Sun is then the edge of Betelgeuse would stretch out past the orbit of Mars!

Written by Jean Joss
The Museo de Vidrio y Cristal in Malaga houses a treasure trove of fine arts in a building that is equally fascinating
T
he old craftsman's area around the church of San Felipe Neri is not yet as well frequented or as picturesque as the muchvisited casco antiguo around the Cathedral but its colourful history is gradually being uncovered. Opposite the church was an old Posada, or lodging house built on the site of old Arab potteries. Malaga was, of course, once famed for its pottery – several pieces dating back to the 12th /13th centuries now in the Alhambra in Granada originated here. When this dilapidated building was purchased some seven years ago the council considered it suitable only for demolition. By chance some terracotta pigment was spotted showing through the grubby whitewash above the lintel on the main doorway (slightly out of kilter after earthquake activity at the end of the 19th century) which led to the discovery of the beautiful facade you can see today. Built in 1760 for an Italian builders merchant named Cassini the house shared many of the materials and echoed the workmanship of the church opposite. An
amazing amount of the original detail has been uncovered – apparently it took a year for the painstaking team of workers to restore it – including several unusual cartouches representing the continents (the unexplored Americas being depicted by wild waves and fearsome sea monsters!).
T
hrough the main door is an entrance hall currently transformed into what must be one of the most beautiful and precious Belens or nativity scenes to be shown this year. Sixty-one porcelain figures in the distinctive Llado colours of muted blues, greys and whites make this a collector's dream – some of the pieces are extremely rare limited editions and have taken years to track down. And there is still time to see this wonderful display since, in keeping with Spanish family tradition, the Belen will not be dismantled until February 2nd, the festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria.
T
hrough yet another set of original wooden
doors you enter the house itself, an experience rather like stepping into the Tardis since the outside gives no clue as to the depth and breadth of the space behind it. There is a huge inner courtyard, flooded with light from a glass roof, surrounded with original grey stone pillars and dotted with luxuriant green plants. Around the walls are glowing panels of stained and painted glass, some from English Victorian houses where such decoration was the height of fashion – for example, the muse of tragedy, Melpomene, was made in 1880 by Albert Moore for a residence in Wimbledon. Three windows made by the renowned Whitefriars glass works in London were originally in a church in Kingston on Thames. Out of their original setting they are cleverly enhanced by locally-made wooden frames. To appreciate the depth of colour and workmanship involved take a closer look at the panel displayed on the staircase depicting St Peter and King David – the subject matter might be somewhat bizarre but the detail and richness of the draperies is
extraordinarily beautiful.
T
he ground floor is currently housing a temporary exhibition of Finnish glassware (again, you still have time to take in this too as it is not due to be moved until early February). Most of this comes from a private collection and includes pieces from the major designers as well as lesser known ones. The display is reflected in antique mirrors hung on the walls enhancing the variety of shapes and colours. This unique venue is also available for private functions, such as concerts or wedding receptions.
A
ll this is on show before you go upstairs to where our guide told us the “actual museum” begins! Here in a series of rooms off the galleried landing is a private collection of thousands of pieces of glass covering the centuries from the Roman era until modern times. But these are not displayed in a sterile museum environment, instead they form an integral part of settings
appropriate to their age, shining behind antique glass-fronted cabinets, set out on polished wooden side tables, in well stocked bookcases and purpose built glassed alcoves. Framed portraits of noblemen and women look down on carved and brocaded chairs, sparkling crystal chandeliers cascade from the beamed ceilings above exquisite pieces of occasional furniture worked in all manner of woods -have you every heard of oyster laburnum or padauk? I hadn't! It is difficult to decide what to look at next so rich is the selection of fine arts displayed here.
A
nd then there is the glass itself – Roman glass, Islamic glass, Venetian glass, lead crystal, cut glass, pressed glass, Spanish La Granja glass, French Baccarat glass, Stourbridge glass, cameo glass, carved glass, engraved glass, clear glass, coloured glass, glass for the aristocracy, glass for the masses, designer glass, Lalique, Galle …the list is as endless as the techniques and designs employed over the centuries. It is hard to
keep track of everything you see. Without a doubt here is somewhere that you could visit time and again and still keep noticing something you missed before.
V
isitors are given a guided tour which according to the brochure lasts some 50 minutes. If you are fortunate enough to have one of the three colleagues who set up the museum as your guide then it will be a visit to remember – their knowledge and enthusiasm is so infectious that you too may lose track of time like we did!

have a strange method of Ithiscoming across movies and one was no exception.
Set in the days when Viagra had just exploded onto the scene as the drug du jour for the man who, erm... might need a bit of help, this is a romantic comedy with a bit of a difference. Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall, a bit of a jack the lad and underachiever who decides to get a grip on his career and becomes a pharmaceuticals salesman for Pfizer just as the company launches its new wonder drug. During the course of his travels Jamie meets Maggie (Hathaway) a bohemian free spirit sporting kaftans and dirty feet but immaculately coifed hair – like you do. Both are commitment phobic – and Maggie has a serious reason to debate the wisdom of long term
romantic involvement. She is coming to terms with being diagnosed with a long term illness so that’s got to prove to be a serious test of Jamie’s commitment. The movie takes a satirical look at the morality of the US health system and the hard headedness of its drugs companies, leavened with the rom com bit – will love prevail – and the illness, which adds to the drama. A bit like a riper version of Love Story. Both leads are charismatic and work well together so there are plenty of laughs...often a rare commodity in your average
romantic comedy. Critics have felt that the mix of themes has been counterproductive but despite that it’s received a reasonable reception. Be aware that Hathaway
is not undressed as often as you might think from seeing the trailers. And also be aware that there is plenty of sexy stuff in it and a fair bit of swearing – hence its 15 certificate in the UK.
does it have the greatest set of antagonists ever, but the film itself was very well done. Good cinematography, good special effects, and, surprisingly enough, a really good plot. Unlike most “B” horror movies where the cast just seem to be killing time until the scary stuff kicks in, this came across as a regular movie from the beginning, with believable characters and humour, so the horror to follow was just a bonus .
you are bound to enjoy this Norwegian escapade. The humour is more subtle and witty than the ‘in your face’ American diatribe and even the subtitles do not deter from an enjoyable viewing as the picture is more visual as opposed to dialogue driven.
Colin clinches two awards four – best film, best director, best screenplay and best score. Natalie Portman won best actress for Black Swan and Christian Bale received best supporting actor for his performance in The Fighter. Melissa Leo was best supporting actor for the same movie. Robert DeNiro got the lifetime Cecil B DeMille award and joked that luckily the nominations had been announced before Little Fockers had hit cinema screens! All eyes now are on the Oscar nominations

It was a good weekend for Brit actor Colin Firth. Last Friday he received the Critics Choice award for best actor for his role in The King’s Speech and capped it with the Golden Globe for best actor on Sunday night. It was a bit of a disappointment overall for the film, which received seven award nominations but won only one. The big winner on the night was The Social Network, about the founder of Facebook. It had been nominated for six awards and picked up
While doing my Yahoo daily crossword I got a clue for a Nazi Zombie movie and I thought: “Nazis, Zombies! This I have to see”. So, that is how I found this movie and with a tag line like “Eins, Zwei, Die!”, how could I resist?

After only a short while, the inevitable happens: a crazy old man barges his way into their lives and bores them with a ridiculous tale of evil Nazi curses and stolen treasure. seeking the gold that, well, wasn't really theirs to begin with, but they still want it back anyway. his may sound a little odd, Treallybut one of the zombies bugged me. The first time you see the zombie I am referring to is when the girls are trying to get to the car you only see him for a few seconds, but he appears quite a few more times (so don’t worry, if you don’t’ catch him the first time round). Now this is what bugged me about him, all the zombies are uniform dressed Nazis - except this guy, he’s not the chief Nazi, he’s just one of the foot soldiers - and on top of his uniform, he has a white Parker type coat. My first thought of logic as this is a zombie movie, is perhaps he stole it off some previous victim, but there would be blood on it and this coat looks brand spanking new. So, now I am thinking that this particular zombie decided he didn’t want to get blood and brains on his uniform, so he went down to H&M and bought this new coat. Anyway, when you see him, you’ll know what I’m on about – oh, and notice how his magical coat never gets any blood on it! t certainly is worth keeping IScandinavia’s your eyes open for contribution to the horror cinema. The 2008 Swedish vampire film, “Let The Right One In” was an excellent movie and Hollywood , to prove that fact, have just remade it and titled it “Let Me In”. Although there may be no denying that America seems to be the Mecca of moviemaking, if we look a little closer to home, we can find some remarkable work.

Taking the time to deal with issues as they arise will be of great benefit to you. There is an emotional weight that needs dealing with and as long as you face up to it instead of walking away, however hard it may be for you, the air will clear. Solutions will become apparent and are not far away. It may feel as though you have been taken out of your safety zone but this will allow you to be able to operate fully “in the moment”, the place where you function best. Someone or something from your past may unexpectedly turn up or appear back in your life this week. Be prepared for unusual events and surprising news. A big idea that you have may seem impossible but isn’t - keep working at it one step at a time and even dreams can become reality. Others will be listening intently to what you are saying so make sure you think before you speak. Remember that your visions are one of your vital assets. It is frustrating for anyone to have to admit that sometimes there are things that are just beyond our control, or that there may not be any logical or practical solution that is apparent. You can, however, devise a plan even if you can’t stick to it; it will help you to be clear and precise when it comes to keeping the end concept intact. This in turn will encourage others to feel confident in your presence and rally behind you to make a project work. You are a sensitive soul and although it can feel painful at times it has its benefits. Using your radar at the moment to tune in to those around you can help you from potentially misunderstanding certain situations that arise. This energy has a way of making you exude attractiveness and there will be attention coming your way, whether you want it or not. It is not sexual attractiveness but rather a creative energy that makes others want to bask in your sunlight. There comes a time when man can no longer go it alone and he becomes stronger when the load is shared. Now is one of those times and it will benefit you to meet another half way, acting upon the facts and not just waiting around hoping that things will just sort themselves out. You have the ability to rise above restrictions that have been holding you back, in particular within personal relationships. Plans and arrangements keep changing so there is a need to be flexible. “When in doubt do nowt” is how the saying goes and you would do well to listen to those words this week. You may feel confused about a certain issue and the more you try and unravel it the more complicated it becomes. Stress and worry could be taking their toll on your body so pay attention to your health and make sure you get enough rest. There will be an urge to focus on your daily habits making sure your routine still serves you well.
LIBRA
Focusing on what cannot be changed or undone could be causing you to feel rather lethargic. Redirecting your thoughts into the things you can change will enable you to feel more positive this week. Where you have been restricted in the past there is now room for movement and you have plenty of creative energy stored inside just waiting for you to direct it. This is your rd September 23 - moment to shine and it will happen once you turn your attention away from nd October 22 what cannot be.

Loose ends leave you feeling edgy and there is a situation in your life that still needs tying up. The problem is you are more than aware of it and there is an instinctive urge within you to speed this process up as quickly as possible. There are, however, certain things going on behind the scenes that you are not aware of that have to work themselves through naturally. Patience is needed from you now and acceptance that others need to catch up with you.
SAGITTARIUS There is a need within you to surround yourself with as many positive people as you can - this will lift your spirits, especially if you have felt drained through overwork and commitments. Your plate has been full for a long time. By the weekend you will be longing to be in the home and family matters become important. Keep a pen handy as your mind will still be speeding along with ideas November 22nd - coming thick and fast – it is a good idea to write them down as they come to you. December 21st
CAPRICORN The spirit of determination is with you and with passion and vigour you are set to go for exactly what you know you are worth. Stability is something that you need right now as well as some financial security and with Mars at your side spurring you on, you are confident that it is worth fighting for. Even though outside circumstances seem less than stable at the moment this drive will help nd December 22 you cut through the negativity to create a well furnished nest. January 19th

You have had your fair share of uncertainties and insecurities – this is all about to change, with a sweeping gust of energy that enters into your sign this week that gives you the control and energy to take hold of your destiny in both hands. At last you have the ability to steer your own ship instead of relying on a rather poor second in command to do the same job. Embrace the future with confidence, it is time to come out of the closet and show us all what we have been missing. No moment lasts forever and this is the same with the way you are feeling - it will pass. There are times like now when some things must go or fade away and be replaced by something more relevant or new or even better. You instinctively know exactly what needs to be done and this is pushing you to take on a leadership role. Once again fate seems determined to push you into the limelight, allowing you the opportunity to show your assertive colours to all.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
I was talking to a vegetarian the other day who said that she religiously follows the Kym’s Kitchen recipes for the rest of her family but could she please have some more veggie ones, so here’s one for a fab soup that veggies and meat eaters alike will enjoy. The soup is meant to be made in advance and is delicious as a lunch with crusty bread or as a starter to a main meal but watch out - it’s very filling! By the way, did you know that January is National Soup Month in America?
Italian Ribollita (Vegetable and Bread Soup) Ingredients: ● 1 tablespoon olive oil; ● 1 large red onion, diced ; ● 2 carrots, diced; ● 1 stalk celery, diced; ● 4 potatoes, diced; ● 10 (5 inch) courgettes, diced; ● 1 leek, sliced; ● 1½ litres hot water; ● 1 bunch Swiss chard, chopped; ● 1 head Savoy cabbage, quartered, cored and shredded; ● 1 bunch kale, shredded; ● 2 (15.5 ounce) cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed; ● salt and ground black pepper to taste; ● 3 tablespoons tomato puree; ● 8 slices day-old bread
Directions ● Place the olive oil in a deep pan and heat over medium-high heat. ● Stir in the onion, and cook until transparent, about 5 minutes. ● Mix in the carrots, celery, potatoes, courgettes, and leek. Stir and cook 5 minutes more. ● Pour in the hot water to cover the vegetables. Stir in the Swiss chard, Savoy cabbage, and kale. Cover, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 1 hour. ● Place 1 can of beans in a blender or food processor bowl. Blend until smooth.
● Stir pureed beans into the vegetable mixture along with the second can of beans. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. ● Stir in the tomato puree. ● Prepare the soup by layering slices of bread with the vegetable mixture in a casserole or soup dish. Cover, and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight. To serve the soup, place in a pot, and reheat over medium heat. Serve hot.
Making great coffee easy as one, two, three Once you know the basics, it doesn't take much to brew perfect coffee; as a matter of fact, it only takes three things: ● 1. Filtered water: the fewer impurities in the water, the less competition for the true flavour of the coffee. ● 2. Correct proportions: regardless of machine-type, use two tablespoons of grounds per eight ounces of water, and then adjust to your taste from there. ● 3. The right grind: it differs by machine, but generally the more time coffee grounds spend in contact with water, the coarser the grind, and vice-versa.

Sitting still for long is bad for you Researchers used to focus on how much exercise people get but now they’re looking more at the time people spend sitting down – in front of the computer at work, the television or computer at home – and the harm that does. The most recent study followed 4,512 middleaged Scottish men for four years on average, and found that those who said they spent two or more leisure hours a day sitting in front of a screen were at double the risk of a heart attack or other cardiac event compared with those who watched less. Those who spent four or more hours of recreational time in front of a screen were 50% more likely to
die of any cause. The researchers said it didn’t matter whether the men were physically active for several hours a week because it didn’t mitigate the risk associated with the high amount of sedentary screen time. Several other studies have reached the same conclusion. One possible reason for this, demonstrated in animal studies, is that prolonged inactivity appears to sharply reduce
the activity of an important enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which is responsible for breaking down circulating blood lipids and making them available to muscles for energy. Lowered enzyme activity leads to higher levels of fats and triglycerides in the blood, and to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Exercise has very little impact on the enzyme’s
activity. Extended sitting may also lead to high levels of low-grade inflammation, which can also lead to heart disease. The studies have tended to focus on recreational screen time because it’s the easiest to curtail. All the researchers involved have advised people who work at computers all day to get up and take breaks and short walks periodically.
Grandma may have got it wrong The belief that getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of fluids is the best thing for a cold just might be nothing more than an old wives’ tale. Scientists didn’t doubt the benefits of getting proper rest, but they suspected that drinking lots of liquid - that is, beyond the normal amount required in a day – might not be doing much good. In theory, drinking more water and juice helps
replace fluids lost from fever and respiratory tract evaporation, and it helps loosen mucus. But when a team of scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia decided to find out if this was indeed the case, they found a surprising lack of
data in the medical literature. They examined references of relevant papers and contacted experts in the subject but were unable to find even a single clinical trial in the last four decades that specifically studied whether increased fluid intake reduced the severity of an infection.

Down’s DNA blood test offers better screening Because invasive tests like amniocentesis increases the risk of miscarriage, many women choose not to go for a diagnostic test - which involves having a needle inserted to draw off a sample of placenta cells or some of the fluid that bathes the baby - particularly if their estimated risk of having a child with Down's syndrome is smaller than the chance of miscarriage but the new DNA blood test could change that. Babies with Down's syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21, causing physical and intellectual impairments. As DNA can cross the placenta

from the baby to the mother, the blood test can look for this extra chromosome. The largest study to date of the DNA blood test, based on 753 pregnant women in Hong Kong, the UK and the Netherlands, has shown that it could bring the number of invasive tests down significantly, by about 98%. The researchers, from King's College London and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, said the test was still too expensive and needed further study before it could be used routinely something that could take 10 years. They said the ultimate goal is to make it 100% accurate so that invasive tests could be dispensed with completely. Currently, three women in every hundred that test positive would not actually have a baby with Down's.

Nazi smear may hit Oscar chances for Colin Firth British actor Colin Firth has been picking up best actor awards for his role as the stammering George VI in The King’s Speech, including the Golden Globe, which should shorten his odds for an Oscar nomination. But the film’s chances for Oscar success might be hit by an anonymous email being circulated in Hollywood that suggests the Queen’s father was a Nazi sympathiser. The email has been sent to journalists and to voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences claiming that The King’s Speech is a “whitewashing of history”. It includes a piece from New York magazine in which the
Jewish author said that the King had asked the British foreign secretary to encourage the German government to prevent the unauthorised emigration of Jews to British-held Palestine. But leading historians say that this was simply British government policy pre-war, albeit unfortunate, and that the King was merely echoing that policy. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, along with the
Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, famously refused to leave Blitz-torn London so they could be with the people at time of war. The Queen, to become the Queen Mother, said after Buckingham Palace was bombed “Now we can look the East End in the eye” and the film takes us to the inspirational radio speech made by the King on the eve of the Second World War. By this time the UK had taken in about
70,000 Jewish refuges, including 10,000 childrenThe email might prove damaging because a significant number of members of the academy are from Jewish families who emigrated to America. But observers believe that the attack may backfire. The academy has proved to be open minded in the past and ignored anti-Semitic smears made about the 2001 Oscar winner A Beautiful Mind, as

Mobile tone giggle hits YouTube We have all done it – forgotten to turn off our mobile phones, which then ring at an embarrassing moment. Usually it’s in the cinema or theatre and the only saving grace is if you get to it quickly, and the ring tone isn’t one designed to increase the level of shame.
Now King Juan Carlos has done just the same thing – and the moment is captured on YouTube. The King, wearing full dress regalia, was at a ceremony where South and Central American ambassadors were presenting their credentials when his
phone rang. He politely apologised to the Ambassador for Honduras and calmly walked over to a sideboard where his phone was merrily sending out the sound of a giggling child. He turned off the phone and, with aplomb, walked back to the centre of the room to continue his conversation.
Of course, the Spanish monarch is no stranger to mobile phone ring tone fame. In 2007 he told the Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez “Why don’t you shut up!” and this was turned into a hugely popular ring tone that swept Spain.

Who would have thought it? Movie director Martin Scorsese, famous for his mafia thrillers, has become a fan of Britain’s Dancing on Ice. The director is currently filming his latest project at London’s Shepperton Studios and has been seen around the neighbouring set of the Torvill and Dean led show. Apparently he has expressed an interest in being among the live audience. Frank Lampard’s ex Elen Rivas failed to make the cut
in last week’s show, along with ex-Neighbour Craig McLachlan. But she has her new romance with Peter Andre to help ease the disappointment. And Karen Barber - removed from the judging panel and now acting as a mentor has issued a statement with Christopher Dean confirming that they are more then just friends. Both are separated from their spouses - Dean’s family are in the US but Barber’s husband is a coach on the show.

Al-Attiyah wins the Dakar rally Volkswagen is on its way to becoming the Ferrari of Rally Dakar, claiming the overall victory of the 2011 event. That is the third time in a row that VW have won the title. What’s more they’ve also defended the 1-2-3 podium lock-out result of last year. The race was won by t he Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah, along with his German co-driver Timo Gottschalk. in the VW Touarg 3.
Fernando Alonso What Car? Car of the year awards goes “Wrooom” Audi’s new supermini, the A1, has been named car of the year by What Car? Hayden. Behind them came the Maranello team’s new test driver, Jules Bianchi, Valentino Rossi and the Ferrari men, Marc Gene and Giancarlo Fisichella. The finishing order was used to set the grid for the second race in Fiat 500s, in which Alonso comfortably managed to keep the lead, even when the Safety Car
magazine and Ferrari made history by picking up first ever award. The victory for the A1, which was also named best supermini, was announced at a ceremony in London at the weekend. What Car? editor-inchief Steve Fowler said: “If ever there has been a car that has hit the nail squarely and firmly on the head, the Audi A1 is it. “It’s the right car at the right time: a car that combines desirability and ability alongside frugal financials - the perfect
Marlboro team and the specialist Formula 1 and Moto GP media got together on the beautiful slopes of Madonna di Campiglio for the 21st edition of “Wrooom,” the Philip Morris International event. The races take place on the frozen lake, and also featured the drivers and riders from the two teams and was kicked off by Luca Badoer saying his final farewell after his long career as the Scuderia’s test driver. He drove an F60 fitted with special studded tyres. The first race in gokarts saw Alonso beat team-mate Felipe Massa and the American Ducati Marlboro rider, Nicky

came out with five laps to go. Before leaving the Fiat Chalet and heading down the mountain, the Ferrari President met Valentino Rossi, who was a participant at "Wrooom" for the first time this year.
British car makers also put in a good performance, as the Land Rover Discovery won the Best 4x4 award for the seventh consecutive year and the Jaguar XF scooped the Best Executive Car award for the fourth year running. The Ford Mondeo won two categories - Best Family Car and Best Estate Car while BMW's cars also took home two awards the Z4 won Best Open-Top
"Vale in Ferrari red? I don't think so and I'm happy to see Massa and Alonso in red," Montezemolo had said previously, " just as I would be happy to see Valentino once again having fun in a Formula 1 car when the occasion arises. However, I think that his aim lies in winning with an Italian motorcycle and therefore not in our sport: I believe he has evaluated his situation well and that he is right."

Schwartzel defends title and wins Johannesburg Open He overcame a midround wobble at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club - overnight co-leader and compatriot Garth Mulroy shot a 71 to finish second in the last of four events on the European Tour's South African swing. South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, the highest ranked player in the field, successfully clinched a memorable victory worth 206,000 euros when he won the Joburg open on home soil last Sunday. The 26 -year-old won the open with a four-under-par 67 in the final round, finishing four shots clear of Garth Mulroy and defended the title he managed to capture last year by a record six-shots. Schwartzel is the first player to win back-to-back titles in the Joburg Open. The world champion also became the third South African to defend a European Tour title after fellow countrymen Ernie Els and Trevor Immelmann. Schwartzel, whose scores this week have been 68, an impeccable 61 and 69, failed to produce his best shots in round four
from France finished with a one-over 72 - a 12-under total – while Scotland’s Scott Jamieson completed his week a further shot back on 11 under. Seven Bogeys helped him to complete the round of the day on a 65.

but still managed to do enough to snatch a sixth European Tour title with a final total of 265, 19 under. Neither Mulroy nor Aiken could make any headway as the three men began the final day in a tie for the lead. It was Schwartzel that reached the turn with a one-stroke advantage and although managing to miss every fairway until reaching the 17th hole, and both greens on the parthrees, he extended his lead to three shots after chipping in from a greenside bunker for a
birdie on the par-four 13th. Schwartzel told reporters :"I got off to an absolutely perfect start today, I got my nose ahead. Coming down the ninth, I hit it slightly too hard and it went over the back. It was a bad bogey and things started getting a bit shaky for me.” He then went on to say: "I had to really dig deep there on the back nine and managed to make a score. I'm really pleased that all my hard work has paid off." Jean-Baptiste

The Costa Del Sol Men’s Annual Triples was held at Benalmadena Bowls Club with 15 men’s triples from 7 bowls clubs along the coast playing over 2 days with plenty of good bowling. On day one some of the favourite teams were eliminated. The shock team were from Benalmadena of Alex Bradley, Bill Mulcahy and Gus Goodwin beating the highly rated triple of Don Smith, Kevin Bloe and Ron Cole. In the semi finals Alex, Bill and Gus came up against another team from Benalmadena in John Green, John Nagle and Richard Jones in a very close game. After 10 ends John Green’s team led by 15 – 7 but it all changed on the 15th end with Alex picking up a 6 to draw level at 17 all. It stayed level after 18 ends and so to an extra end with Alex’s team holding shot but John Green took out
Brilliant young steeplechaser Long Run thwarted Kauto Star's bid to create racing history as he trounced his rivals to win the King George VI Chase at Kempton. Kauto Star, being ridden for the first time in a race by 15-time champion jockey Tony McCoy, was seeking an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory in the three-mile contest, but had to settle for third. Amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen produced a faultless ride on 9-2 second favourite Long Run, who is owned by his father Robert.
Other scores included Swede Oscar Floren (72) along with South African quartet Tjaart van der Walt (67), George Coetzee (69), James Kingston (71) and Allan Versfeld (72) all of whom ended in a tie for seventh place on 10 under par to make the top 10. Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke finished in a tie for 20th on a six-under 278 after a final round of 69.
"Long Run is a phenomenal horse and I'm so pleased he's shown people what he is capable of," said Waley-Cohen. "He really picked up and showed real courage." Thousands had come to salute dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star,
So, a day that began with grey skies, followed by rain, certainly brought plenty of sunshine with it by the end of the round and especially for Charl Schwartzel.

considered by many to be the greatest steeplechaser of the last 40 years, and he was sent off odds-on favourite. A fifth King George in the row would have surpassed the galloping grey Desert Orchid, who won four times in a five-year period. But it was time for a new champion as Long Run, who only officially had his sixth birthday on New Year's Day, proved too good on the day for the 11-year-old Kauto Star.

the shot wood to win a fantastic match. In the second semi final the Mijas team of Roberto Wright, Jim Taylor and Rob Robinson were beaten by the Benalmadena team of Geoff Edginton, Bill Gregory and Alan Tims 24 – 7. And so to the all Benalmadena final - the more experienced team of John Green, John Nagle and Richard Jones built a lead of 17 – 9 after 13 ends. But
Geoff Edginton, Bill Mulcahy and Alan Tims, all in their 1st major final, picked up 6 shots in the next 2 ends to get back to 15 – 17. China's Ding Junhui secured his first Masters title with a 10-4 victory over Marco Fu in a historic allAsian final. There were no sign of nerves, considering the reported 100 million people watching in China, as the man who made his Masters debut in 2004 with a wildcard entry as a teenager stormed ahead thanks to breaks of 120 and 74 to open up a two-frame advantage. and extended his lead to 6-2. Hong Kong's Fu rallied in the evening to pull back two frames but then lost an agonising 11th, when Ding played a miraculous snooker, to trail 7-4. Fu was left shell-shocked as Ding then rattled in 94, 83 and 85 breaks to win and make up for his 2007 runner-up spot.

Olazabal finally gets his chance Jose Maria Olazabal has been named as Europe's 2012 Ryder Cup captain. The Spaniard, 44, will lead Europe's defence in Illinois in September next year after he was announced as Colin Montgomerie's successor on Tuesday. He has played in seven Ryder Cups, losing only 10 times in 31 matches, and has been vice-captain in the last two. "The two Masters wins at Augusta National are the highlight of my playing career," said Olazabal. "But this is my proudest moment."
Malaga outclassed and C.O.G.S season out thought by Barca gets under way With Malaga fielding Julio Baptista for his debut there were high hopes that this could inspire them to some kind of positive result. Malaga 1 - Barcelona 4 But with Malaga set to defend, and Barca's free flowing football evident from the kick off it was not long before all hopes were out of the window. In the 8th minute, Dani Alves advanced down the right and squared for Iniesta, who beat Malaga keeper Asenjo with a brilliant drive from the edge of the area. With Malaga unable to keep possession of the ball, Barcelona were playing at will with Balon de Oro winner Messi pulling all the strings and bringing out a great save from Asenjo. In the 17th minute Xavi's powerful shot hit the bar and a minute later in another Barcelona attacking move the ball

But on 74 minutes Villa got his second goal of the game after yet another great Barca move to give the Catalans another 3 points. With Real Madrid only drawing with Almeria this gives Barcelona the upper hand in the title challenge. As for Malaga, they have another tough away game at Valencia on Saturday night.

Toon derby: violence returns to shame English football Sunderland insist they will take the strongest possible action against the fans who caused the violent scenes that overshadowed Sunday's derby with Newcastle. Toon goalkeeper Steve Harper was shoved to the ground by a Sunderland fan who raced onto the pitch at the Stadium of Light during the 1-1 draw. There were also nasty scenes at the Midlands derby match between Birmingham and Aston Villa. A smoke bomb was set off in the Garrison Lane Stand and a pink flare in the away end housing 1,500 Aston Villa supporters.
Fans will soon be able to play the hallowed ground that is Augusta National

The C.O.G.S. first outing of the club’s 5th season saw two dozen intrepid golfers trekking down the new road (A7053) to Calanova Golf Course, complete with newly installed Captain Nig Bowler leading the protagonists.
The game started slowly following the restart, and Duda pulled a goal back for Malaga midway through the second half with a brilliant curling free-kick at a point in the match when Malaga were having their best spell.

The US Masters will be featured in EA Sports' next edition of the Tiger Woods computer game. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is scheduled for release on March 29th - a week before the season's first major - and will be the first game to feature the famous tournament at Augusta National. The move is part of a broader effort by the club to increase interest in golf around the world and attract a younger audience. It is also the first time that The Masters has allowed its image to be shown in this way.
TENNIS First Grand Slam of the year gets under way down under Kim Clijsters crushed fellow former world No 1 Dinara Safina in an embarrassingly one-sided first-round meeting at the Australian Open on Tuesday. The third-seeded Belgian needed just 44 minutes to claim a 6-0 6-0 victory over the out-of-sorts Russian on Rod Lever Arena. The British duo of Elena Baltachi and Anne Keothavong have both made it through to the second round.
