Pension reforms agreed After several meetings last week which lasted well into the early hours of the morning, the
Play by government and the labour unions finally reached an agreement on Friday to raise the retirement the rules... age as part of an overhaul of the country’s pensions system.
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Well, that really put the cat amongst the pigeons! The article we ran last week about the graffiti on the equipment in a children's play area has generated quite a few comments – mostly from the parents! As the article said, some of the names were not written by the teenagers named on the play equipment but by some friends. However, the good news is that the young people cleaned up the playground at the weekend, including the Spanish names, so I'd like to say a heartfelt “Well done” to all those that worked hard over the weekend to restore the playground to its former glory. now, that leads me to the absolute tragedy that there doesn't seem to be any kind of events and activities for the 11 to 18year-olds. When I was that age there were youth clubs to keep us from getting bored. Teenagers have huge amounts of energy so we should be giving them things that they're interested in to get rid of that energy. Every Saturday in the uK I ran a club that had over 300 members. We used to hire a professional disco and charge the kids £1 each to get in to cover costs. The only rule was “no alcohol or drugs” and rarely was that not obeyed and extremely rarely was there any trouble. The members enjoyed themselves in a safe environment and the parents were happy that they knew where their kids were and what they were up to. It only takes a few responsible adults to organise it.......
The government had warned the unions that if an agreement was not reached by that day, it would go ahead with the reforms anyway, having enough backing in Parliament to do so. At least for now, there will be no organised strikes and investors , who have been demanding that Spain clean up its public
finances, happier.

The unions have agreed to raising the retirement age from 65 to 67, while the government has agreed that workers can retire at 65 if they have contributed to the state pensions system for at least 38.5 years. The agreement will also cut the cost of future
pension payments by basing the calculation for them on a worker’s last 25 years of earnings, rather than the current 15 years. Another reform is aimed at discouraging people from early retirement. For example, people who want to retire at 63 will have to pay social security at a slightly higher rate for 33 years.
Like many other Western countries, Spain is finding it increasingly difficult to support the cost of an ageing population. The government has estimated that without these reforms pensions would account for 14% of public expenditure by 2050, compared with 9% in 2010. Last year was the first in which Spain’s pension
system did not manage to run a surplus. According to the government, the number of Spaniards over the age of 64 will double over the next four decades, accounting for more than 30% of the total population. The reforms will start entering into force in 2013 in a progressive way.

Huge protests fan Egypt unrest Mr ElBaradei told alArabiya TV that people are calling Friday “the Friday of departure”: “I hope that President Mubarak will take heed before then and leave the country after 30 years of rule and give the people a chance, and I don't expect that he wants to see more blood." The vow by Egypt's powerful army not use force against the protesters has been a major blow for President Mubarak, who reshuffled his cabinet on Monday to try to head off the protests, replacing the widely despised interior minister Habib al-Adly. New vice-president Omar Suleiman said he would hold cross-party talks on constitutional reform and prime minister Ahmad Shafiq told state TV the
new government would ensure bread supplies, tackle security problems and "review our entire political, constitutional and legislative situation, into something more satisfactory and appropriate for us as Egyptian citizens". Meanwhile, most observers agreed that the feeling that change was coming in Egypt was getting stronger, and too much had happened too quickly for things to go back to the way they were before. UN human rights chief Navi Pillay has said 300 people may been killed across the country since the protests began a week ago. They followed an internet campaign and were partly inspired by the

ousting of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia last month. The government has since cut off the internet in an effort to stop the spread of the protests and text messaging services have been disrupted. Unnamed security officials reported that all roads and public transportation to Cairo had been shut down in an effort to deter protesters from flooding into the capital. A coalition of political opposition groups incorporating the Muslim Brotherhood, political parties such as that led by Mr ElBaradei, and other prominent figures - has reportedly met, and told the Egyptian government that it will begin talks on its demands only after Mr
that Britons without a “pressing need” to be in Cairo, Alexandria or Suez should leave. Chartered planes are being laid on to bring people back to the UK. Holiday companies are offering heavy discounts to encourage visitors to Egyptian Red Sea resorts, which, they say, are unaffected.

'Grand social pact' to overhaul economy
Another chance to register to vote
The government, labour unions and business groups have struck a "grand social pact" for an overhaul to boost the economy.
The Socialist Party's secretary for Social Movements and Relations. Pedro Zerolo, announced on Monday that foreign residents from the EU will have another chance to register to vote in the local and regional elections on May 22nd. The last day for registration was Monday January 31st, but Sr Zerolo said there will be another opportunity from April 4th to 11th, when the local councils have to check that their registration lists are correct. Sr Zerolo said people could go to their council offices and register on those days. He said there were nearly 1.7 million people from the EU living in Spain who have the right to vote in local elections.
It addresses such areas as collective bargaining, the energy market, and research and development and other changes are to be announced later this week are areas likely to be addressed. Other good economic news this week
included a government forecast on Monday that the contraction of the economy in 2010 might be limited to 0.2%. A decline of 0.3% had originally been predicted for the year. However,
consumer prices rose 3.3% in January, according to data from the National Statistics Institute published on Monday. Fuelled by price hikes in electricity, food and nonalcoholic drinks, the figure was slightly above the 2.9%
rise in prices for December. The government is struggling to revive its economy, the fifth-largest in the EU, and avoid an international bail-out like those in Greece and the Irish Republic.
Merkel will meet King German Chancellor Angela Merkel will arrive in Madrid on Thursday to attend the XIII Hispano-German Summit, accompanied by her ministers of foreign affairs, finance, economy, labour, transport and
education. Before the meeting, Ms Merkel will have an audience with King Juan Carlos and lunch at the Moncloa Palace, the PM's official residence, with union and business representatives. She is
expected to discuss a plan to attract young professionals to work in Germany, where there is a deficit of some 800,000, about the same number of young unemployed professionals here in Spain.

Somali pirates’ trial opens
'We'll fix the economy in 2 years'
The trial of two Somali pirates charged with kidnapping the 36-member crew of the Alakrana tuna vessel hijacked on September 3rd, 2009 about 500 miles off the coast of Somalia, began in Madrid’s High Court on Friday. With all the opinion polls in his favour, opposition leader Mariano Rajoy said during an interview with El Mundo newspaper published on Sunday that he would fix the economy in two years if the Partido Popular wins the 2012 general election, as all recent opinion polls indicate. And a list of ten things the PP would do if it wins drew 90% support from the paper's readers. These included privatising or closing most of the 4000 publ
public companies currently in existence and a huge reduction of the number of advisers and political appointees in the regional governments. The PP would also put a ceiling on regional government spending, standardise regional laws on the environment and transport, among others, and recommend that the regional governments close down their “embassies” abroad, and eliminate superfluous figures like the regional ombudsmen. He said he would also reduce IVA from 8% to 4% for the tourist sector and bring back tax relief for home buyers. Last on the list was a contract for immigrants obliging them to accept the Constitution, learn Spanish and respect Spanish customs.

the
'Baby thefts' probe rejected
Police warn young of internet dangers
Attorney General Candido Conde-Pumpido has rejected a request to investigate 261 cases of baby thefts which allegedly started during the Franco regime in the 1950s and continued until 1987. The victim-support group Anadir estimates that thousands of babies were stolen during that time, the largest number – 84 – in Madrid. Anadir’s lawyer, Enrique Vila, said the practice began in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, when the babies were taken from women who had supported the defeated Second Republic, and handed to people more "ideologically suitable". However, Vila said, the practice allowed the medical staff involved to see the potential for making money and in the end any baby could be targeted. Most of the women never saw their babies, having been told they had died shortly after birth. One woman said her son was taken away “to be weighed and I never saw him again”. Anadir was founded by Antonio Barroso,
after the man he always believed was his father admitted on his death bed that he had bought his son, paying "more than the price of a flat" to doctors, in cash. DNA tests later proved that Antonio and his parents were not biologically related. Sr Barroso told reporters outside the general prosecutor's office last week: "There are cases of mothers who had their babies' graves opened and found them empty when they had been taking flowers there for 30 years.” After failing to get a local court to look into his case, he founded Anadir as a
campaign group and was amazed at the scale of the response. Sr Vila said now that the attorney general (pictured above) has declined to investigate the cases, “we’ll take them to the European Court of Human Rights”.

On the European Day of Data Protection last week, the National Police and the Guardia Civil warned young people through their page on the Tuenti social network to be careful that the photos or information they post on the net do not harm or offend the people involved and, above all, that they have their permission to post them. They also advised them not to post “daring” photos of themselves on the web and to think twice before accepting invitations from people they don't know to be their friend. They said there are people out there who will use all kinds of tricks to get their hands on information about bank accounts and passwords.

Cars and mobiles to go The Partido Popular has presented a proposal to Parliament to limit the number of official mobiles and cars used by public sector workers. The PP said the number of such mobile phones had risen from over 15,000 in 2004 to nearly 57,000 in 2009, at a cost to the state of €105 million. Half of the phones have internet access. The PP has also proposed that the use of government cars should be reduced to only a few top people in each government department.

Queensland braces for Cyclone Yasi
Goods train crash driver investigated
Queensland could be facing one of the worst cyclones in its history, just as it struggles to recover from devastating floods. State Premier Anna Bligh warned on Monday that Cyclone Yasi had the potential to be one of the "most significant cyclones that we've ever had to deal with". The state bore the brunt of flooding which began in December and peaked in mid-January
with the inundation of Australia's third-largest city of Brisbane. The government has estimated the cost of the damage at A$5.6bn (£3.5bn) Australia's costliest natural disaster. Cyclone Yasi is expected to become a category four storm by
today, Wednesday, and to hit north of Brisbane, with the biggest impact along the stretch of coastline between Innisfail and Mackay. All ports along that stretch were closed on Tuesday afternoon and resort islands began evacuating guests. The
flood-hit state was struck on Sunday by a smaller storm, Cyclone Anthony, which tore roofs off houses and felled trees in northern coastal areas. Ms Bligh said that areas in the path of the cyclone could see winds of 100km/h by early today, Wednesday, as well as
automatic pistols, including a Glock similar to the weapon Mr Loughner is accused of using in the deadly January 8th attack. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: "We have demonstrated how easy it is for anyone to buy a semi-automatic handgun and a high

A further charge of illegal conflict of interest was added last November. It was confirmed on Monday that the trial would start on March 7th. On Sunday, the newspaper Journal du

But Mrs Chirac said on Monday that the reports were "a lie" and that she had "never spoken of that disease of Alzheimer's regarding my husband". Mr Chirac himself told a

A goods train driver is being investigated for alleged involuntary manslaughter after his train collided headon with a passenger train in thick fog near the village of Hordorf in Saxony-Anhalt on Saturday night. The passenger train driver and nine passengers were killed and another 23 people were injured. Ten people are still in hospital and police have so far only managed to identify two men who died, aged 63 and 74. That’s because the eight remaining victims were not carrying identity papers and the force of the crash caused severe injuries. Investigators are checking if the goods train driver failed to respond to a stop signal.

Tax police hunt billions in undeclared income Italians failed to declare almost €50bn in income in 2010, a rise of 46% over the previous year, the tax authorities said on Monday. Risk of big quake in Chile
STOCK CLEARANCE!
Scientists said on Monday that there is still a risk of a large earthquake close to the site of last February's magnitude 8.8 quake in the Maule region in central Chile.
It occurred in what scientists referred to at the time as a "seismic gap" - a zone along the converging boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates that had not experienced a major quake since the one witnessed by Charles Darwin in 1835 during his famous Beagle expedition. EU freezes Ben Ali's assets EU foreign ministers have acceded to a request from Tunisia's new interim government to freeze the assets of ousted Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and his wife. Mr Ben Ali fled Tunisia two weeks ago after a series of protests against poverty and corruption, ending his 23
years in power. He and his family are accused of having enriched themselves over many years at the country's expense. Tunisia enjoyed steady economic growth under Mr Ben Ali, but many - including the young men who launched the protests in December - remained poor. The president's family
and his associates are believed to have controlled a large portion of the country's economy. EU officials said a number of associates of the deposed president may face similar sanctions. The EU is looking at resuming talks on improving trade terms with the country.

Reformed boy band Blue are planning another kick start to their career by representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf, Germany with the song “I Can”. Their former manager Daniel Glatman said he was not so sure that it was a good idea: “It's like Lewis Hamilton entering a go-kart race. He'd be the favourite to win but, if he lost, his career would be in tatters and there'd be no coming back for the boys if this happened,” he warned. The all British band have been posting excited notices on Twitter recently saying; “Yes the rumours r true!! We r representing the uk in this yrs EUROVISION! We r really excited and cant wait till u hear the song!! ITS BIG!!!." The band consists of four singers
Simon Webbe, Lee Ryan, Duncan James and Antony Costa, who formed Blue in 2001 before splitting in 2005. The band sold around eight million records. Their big hit single “All Rise” reached number 4 in the UK charts, a chart topping second song “Too Close” was released in August 2001. There will be an hour long documentary about the band’s preparation for Eurovision which will be screened in April.

Five men were arrested last Thursday believed to have connections to the group Anonymous, which has claimed responsibility for a series of denial-of-service attacks launched in support of WikiLeaks. The group said that it viewed the arrests as a “declaration of War” by the British authorities, saying: “Anonymous believes that pursuing this direction is a sad mistake on your behalf. Not only does it reveal the fact that you do not seem to understand the presentday political and technological reality, we also take this as a serious declaration of war from yourself, the U.K. government, to us, Anonymous, the people.” In the meantime the extradition hearing for WikiLeaks Julian Assange is set for the 7th and 8th February.

Scot Adam Potter, 36, from Glasgow, was found on his feet and reading a map by a helicopter rescue crew just half an hour after falling 980 feet off a mountain. The rescue crew's observer, Lieutenant Tim Barker, said that they could not believe it was him at first. “It seemed impossible,” he said, but they traced a vertical line up from where they found him to where he had fallen and found bits of his kit that had fallen off him as he fell. The lieutenant added: “It was incredible. He must have just glanced off the outcrops as he fell, almost flying.” Mr Potter said that he lost his footing on some ice
A street by street guide which tells internet users where crimes have been committed near their homes was this week launched by the Home Office. It is the first time information like this has been released anywhere in the world. It tells users about the type of crime committed and which police officers are responsible for their area. But by yesterday the site had crashed, overwhelmed after between 4m and 5m people looked at it every hour after it was launched. David Moore, director of Rock Kitchen Harris, the firm which developed the site, said the demand had been “crazy” and the problem was “temporary”.

Police have confirmed that CS spray was used on a female protester who was one of 20 from protest group Uncut taking part in a sit-in in a Boots store in central London. The protesters claim Boots is avoiding tax by registering abroad. But a spokeswoman for the store said that their Swiss registration reflected the international nature of the company. It was also revealed that staff at the Boots store helped to treat some of the protesters affected by the spray, which Scotland Yard says “could not cause lasting damage”. Later, the woman was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. Around 30 Uncut protests had been planned against the company across the UK. In Lewes, East Sussex, five people were arrested for public order offences for blocking the entrance to the town's

branch of Boots including a 60-year-old man and three women aged 43, 47 and 70. And in Brighton aound 20 people targeted the North Street branch where they were removed from the store but no arrests were made. Uncut describes itself as “an army of citizen volunteers determined to make wealthy tax avoiders pay”, and claims retailers such as Boots deprive the UK taxpayer of huge sums of money by being registered in Switzerland, where taxes are far lower. Responding to the criticisms the Boots spokeswoman said: "If we had registered in Switzerland purely for tax reasons there are many other countries that we could have considered." She added that they had contributed to the UK's finances through increased business rates and National Insurance contributions resulting from the

expansion of the brand. One of the founding members of Uncut, Daniel Garvin, 26, said the idea was formed by 10 friends chatting about the austerity cuts in a north London pub in October. He said the original plan was to see if they could "get the issue of tax avoidance by massive corporations" on to the political agenda by staging one protest action against Vodafone. The group's main targets are Vodafone and Sir Philip Green, whose retail empire includes Topshop, and Burton. Subsequent protests have forced Topshop's stores in Oxford Street, London, and Manchester's Arndale shopping centre to close. The group likes to be seen as a decentralised and organic movement empowered by individuals. It currently has more than 9,000 Facebook members and 11,000 Twitter followers.
A British company has invented artificial “petrol”, which emits no greenhouse gases and could cost as little as 19 p a litre at the pumps. Oxfordshire based firm Cella Energy has been developing a fuel using hydrogen, which is currently much cheaper than oil. The first road tests of the new fuel are planned to take place next year and, if all went to plan, the new fuel could be available within three to five years. It would be unlikely to cost motorists 19p a litre Government taxes would push it to 60p.But it would mean big savings, without the need to modify cars.
Pint goes up in price The price of a pint of beer could rise this year by as much as 10%, or 30p, as the soaring cost of barley adds to increases in duty and VAT, according to a study for The Grocer magazine. An increase of between 4.25% to 6.5% will come from the government's duty escalator, which climbs annually by the rate of inflation plus 2%, the trade magazine reported. On top of that brewers are having to spend more on ingredients, packaging and distribution, the study discovered. Experts were predicting that British barley prices in particular - already up 90% in 2010 - would rise even higher as global barley production was set to fall by 43% on last year's volumes to a four-year low as farmers switched to more lucrative crops such as wheat.

The time-linked radar, which was installed there on December 22nd for a test run, photographs vehicles entering and leaving the tunnel and the time it takes for them to get through indicates if they have observed the speed limit. During the test period, drivers who exceeded the limit
received a letter signed by Traffic Authority chief Pere Navarro reminding them that speeding was responsible for one in four accidents in Spain. But the system went “live” on Monday and next time they will get a fine of up to €600 and lose six points. This means there are
Mafiosos obtain police data The names and home addresses of at least eight policeman who participated in the dismantling of a criminal gang in July 2007 have ended up in the hands of the people they arrested because the data was not protected adequately enough. A spokesman for the police union SUP, which denounced the case to Police general director Francisco Puerta on
January 20th, told reporters: “We're talking about a gang that has already killed one Guardia Civil. This is really serious, it's the worst thing that can happen to a policeman.” The information was contained in the statements made by the policemen concerned after a judge asked for an internal investigation to verify that the raids carried out during the breaking up of the ring had been legal.

Probable election date revealed While most of the regional governments hold their elections on the same date as the municipal elections (May 22nd this year), Andalucia is one of the few exceptions. Regional premier José Antonio Griñan told reporters on Monday that the regional election will “probably” be held on the first Sunday in March, that is, the 4th. In 2008, it was held the same day as the general election, which in recent years has been held on the second Sunday in March.

Pensioner Antonio Ramirez and his wife Vivian, who live near the Balcon de Europa, Nerja, nearly collapsed when they opened the electricity bill for the last two months of last year – for a mere €7,264. “How on earth am I going to pay that, on a pension of €600 a month,” he asked reporters. “I couldn't pay it now or any time in the future either.” He
said the bill normally amounted to between €100 and €120 “depending on whether it's a real or estimated reading”. When he went to the Endesa-Sevillana office to demand an explanation, they assured him there had to have been “some kind of mistake” and that they would send someone to check his meter.

First water taxi service for Costa Representatives of Yachting Perfection International were in Malaga port last week to meet the delivery of the first British-made water taxi which will soon be in service from Malaga to Marbella, with stops in between. A spokesman for Yachting Perfection, which has an office in Fuengirola, said the company is negotiating with local manufacturers to build the rest of the fleet which, it is hoped, will be in service by Easter week. Each taxi costs €120,000 and takes three months to build. The authorities in Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella have already given permission for the
taxi service to call in there and negotiations are under way with Puerto Banus. The spokesman said the aim was to extend the service eastwards as far as Nerja and westwards as far as Gibraltar by the end of the year. The taxis, which can carry 12 passengers, will run all year, unless bad weather keeps them in port. Fares have not been decided on yet but they will
range from €10-12 from Malaga to Benalmadena, a run of about 20 minutes, and €25-30 to Marbella. The Malaga taxi service, to be called Aqua Taxi, is the first in Spain as well as the Mediterranean. In the long term, Yachting Perfection hopes to have franchises in Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Cadiz and Seville.
Vouchers for visitors to Marbella Tourism has changed drastically because of the economic crisis. Coaches no longer drop dozens of tourists outside hotels, as people find it cheaper to go online and work out their own itineraries. As a result, some 140 businesses in Marbella
have decided to keep abreast of the times and provide a book of vouchers costing €35 for visitors to the old part of town, which also includes two hours of free parking at the market and Avenida del Mar car parks. The vouchers will be
valid in museums, shops, bas and restaurants. A spokesman for the Marbella Old Town Business Association said the book of vouchers will be available at hotels in the town and eventually along the whole Costa.

Police arrest mafiosos The National Police have arrested three members of the Calabrian mafia – one in Almeria and two in Marbella – in connection with a robbery at the Cajasol in Cadiz last November and another at the post office in Torremolinos on January 17th. The three have long criminal records in Italy and came to Spain to escape increased police activity against the gang. The National Police, who had been tracking their movements since the Cadiz bank robbery, said they were planning another heist in Almeria. ANDALUCIA

Mass arrest of copper thieves The New Year brought no respite from the copper thieves, or for them – as the Guardia Civil arrested 23 members of a network believed to have carried out 60 thefts of copper in the province last year. The Guardia seized four tons of the metal at a scrap yard in the provincial capital, as well as two lorries used by the thieves. Electricity cables are a favourite target and several towns in the province were left without electricity last year as a result.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
To vote or not to vote
The big pact
T
P
he results of a very small poll published in another English language freebie have saddened me greatly. I don’t know how many people the paper interviewed but I’m assuming that the ones which appeared were representative of the response. Asked whether they intended to vote in the upcoming local elections, two said no because there was too much corruption, the rest seemed to be largely uninterested and only one said she would like to vote but didn’t know enough about the political parties.
T
he News intends to put that right with a series of articles about the parties and their aims starting very shortly. I had intended to start writing them in late March – the elections are on May 22nd – but I’ll have to bring them forward for the simple reason that EU residents will get another chance register with their local town halls from April 4th to 11th, when by law they have to carry out a final check of the census.
I
think the lack of an organised movement puts off many people. If their Spanish is not up to scratch they can't access sources of information and only get a very limited vision of what's happening in the country from the English-language press. And most people think that those who lust for power go into politics.
B
ut it isn’t just about power. It’s also about “making a difference”, “righting wrongs”, getting things done”, to mention just a few of the clichés that are trotted out by the professional politicians when they’re after your vote. The simple truth is that your vote can make a difference and I’m only going to put forward one example where this could be done.
Barcelona another judge ruled in favour of a couple who said the bank only reduced their mortgage debt by the amount they got for the flat when it was auctioned – around €40,000, when in fact it had been valued at €72,000.
T
he consumers’ organisation Facua has seized on these two rulings and wants the government to bring pressure to bear on the banks to get the rulings applied everywhere else.
T
he Catalan regional government has also announced that it intends to take over empty housing, whoever it belongs to – the banks or the builders – and rent them cheaply to people, like those on the dole or young people who are still living with their parents, who have no other way of getting a roof over their heads. No-one seems to know exactly how many empty houses and flats there are in Spain, but the most conservative estimate seems to be around 800,000. If the Catalan government goes ahead with this votecatching plan, no doubt other regions will follow suit.
T
he two couples involved in the cases mentioned above were not backed by any organisation. They felt they were being unfairly treated and did something about it.
A
ll it needs is for a few people in each town and village in the province to get together and decide what they would like to see put right. They should then approach the political parties with a list of demands - not requests – and you can bet your boots that after the politicians look at the names of the people registered to vote in their town, they'll start seeing foreign residents in a different light. And once a few have made the move, others will follow. Go on – give it a try.
I
know many people are wondering if their homes are legal or not – even when they’re completely legal – because we’ve been reading too many horror stories about demolitions in recent months. The Junta de Andalucia is about to reveal its allegedly final Territorial Plan which will involve legalising as many properties as possible – something the local councils were instructed to do a couple of years back. Unfortunately, the local councils are a law unto themselves and, like the good bureaucrats they are, they tend to interpret laws and regulations in their own inimitable way. But a group of a few determined people could start changing all that, and if two recent legal rulings are anything to go by, they will probably find the judges are on their side. Currently, when people have their homes repossessed by the banks, they still have to pay off the mortgage. When a couple in Navarra contested this in court, the judge ruled in their favour and told the bank it was immoral. He told the bank to come to a better arrangement with the couple. In

ll of a sudden Zapatero is popping up on the screen again and Rubalcaba seems to have disappeared. Has the constant speculation about his successor getting to him? He told a party rally on Sunday to forget about the general election and concentrate on working for a better future for Spain. I predicted last week that Zapatero is capable of running again – despite the odds – and I may turn out to be right. If he does, he'll suffer the sort of humiliating defeat that someone of his temperament will find hard to swallow. But that's his problem, not ours.
rime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero seems to have scored a major victory with his brokering of a far-reaching social and economic pact with labour leaders and big business. It was a coup that few expected, especially this late in the game. Last year, when labour broke with the Socialists following the government’s job reform law that irked both the workers’ leaders and big business, it seemed that there would never ever be any love lost between the prime minister and the heads of the UGT and CCOO. Then came pension reform and Zapatero’s drive to push the retirement age to 67. The UGT and CCOO threatened to hold another general strike if the government didn’t cancel its plans, putting their strained-relationship into a boiling cauldron.
B
ut late night deals, including a pledge made by the government to include labour into future negotiations when it presents new laws in other fields and allow people to continue to retire at 65 if they have a certain number of contributions paid, won Zapatero his ambitious pact. Now the employers’ groups have also signed in. What exactly does the accord mean? The Socialists will now be expected to consult with labour and employers’ groups when it comes to drafting new laws in research and development, and energy, as well as fine-tuning the labour reform package. It will also bring a sense of stability for Spain’s image abroad, which has been battered by the markets and financial speculation. Investors, we hope, will now see that there is a drive for joint cooperation among the country’s major political and social forces to get this economy rolling again.
T
he opposition Popular Party, as well as most of the minor parties, has said that they will sign on to the pact – a brand of cooperation that hasn’t been seen in years. We just hope that someone in government or on the other side does not do anything rash, such as demonstrating little flexibility, to jeopardize the pact. The government and the unions have come a long way by shifting gears from confrontational mode to finally sitting down at the same table.

here is an explosive scandal brewing in Argentina concerning last month’s discovery in Barcelona of a chartered airplane that was carrying nearly one ton of cocaine. Catalonia authorities arrested three men after the plane made a landing at El Prat airport on January 2nd. The three – two brothers and a friend – are all sons of top military officials in Argentina. No connection has been made between the 994-kilo
shipment and the military, but a judge has already been looking into suspicions that someone in the Argentine armed forces may have known about the plane and its contraband cargo.
A
judge in Buenos Aires has already subpoenaed 18 military officers to question them about their knowledge in the case. Spanish authorities have already turned over their part of the investigation to their Argentine counterparts. One of the more juicy pieces of evidence to surface is that the private jet had been on an air force base near the city of Moron in Argentina before it left for Barcelona. Argentine Defence Minister Arturo Puricelli said last week that the issue has caused a lot of discontent in the military. “Here no one can say that the armed forces are involved in this affair. They have been affected by the sad circumstance that these suspects undoubtedly had some connections to the air force,” he said. One of the men is the son of a general who had served as Argentina’s chief of staff during the 1990s.
I
t is difficult to imagine how much room a ton of cocaine takes up and how these men really believed that they could sneak in such a gargantuan amount into Spain without anybody noticing. No doubt they were counting on help from someone already on Spanish territory. The case hasn’t played big in the Spanish press, and it is still unclear what information the defendants have given to authorities here that could ignite an official judicial inquiry in the Southern Cone country. What is apparent is that Spain still continues to be the narco-gateway to the rest Europe and we will be seeing more cases such as these in the future.

Community New fundraising efforts Marbella Ladies Golfing Association announces plans for 2011 Marbella Ladies Golfing Association is a friendly association which welcomes ladies of all abilities living or holidaying in Marbella to come and enjoy a game of golf. It’s an excellent way to enjoy life to the full on the wonderful courses of the Costa del Sol while keeping fit, making friends and meeting business contacts. This organisation has been combining a love of golf with a passion for giving back to the community since 2007. Last year the association raised over €4,000 for Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice and the Malaga orphanage Cuidad de los
Niños. Founder Beatriz Crawford-Carse explains: “Since setting up Marbella LGA in 2006, I was determined that we would contribute to the community. Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice is battling to stay open and care for its patients and Cuidad de los Niños has many children relying on them so it’s vital that they can count on regular donations from organisations such as ours. “We will now be adding a small donation to the cost of each event we run. As we negotiate discounts with the courses, it will still cost less for our members, but
we can be building up a fund throughout the year. “Of course, we will still be organizing our charity events as well and hope the business community can help us via sponsorship and the golfers will give generously. Our aim is to double our total from this year and raise €8,000 for these charities during 2011, a target I am sure we can reach with hard work and generosity from the residents and golfers of Marbella.” To find out about joining the Marbella LGA or sponsoring an event please visit www.marbellalga.com
Golden golf for Cudeca
The Annual Cudeca Cup fundraising golf competition held on Campo Asia, raised almost €6,000 for the organization which provides palliative care, free of charge, to patients suffering from advanced cancer. Over €115,000 has been raised by this tournament since
the event began in 1994. The overall winner of this Stableford competition was resort resident and past club captain James Reid, with 38 points. The main prizes in the raffle went to laCala&You cardholders Patrick and Suzzane Jones.
The President and founder of Cudeca, Joan Hunt O.B.E., expressed her gratitude to all the people who supported the competition, including David Leadbetter Golf Academy at La Cala who organized funny competitions to raise extra money.

The symbol for this year is the Rabbit and people born in 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit people seldom lose their temper. They are clever at business and being conscientious, never back out of a contract. They would make good gamblers for they have the uncanny gift of choosing the right thing.
Iceland hamper raises money for charity
Employees from Iceland in Mijas recently donated a Christmas hamper to be raffled off for charity in the store cafeteria and managed to raise a much appreciated 118€ for the Hospice Centre located in Benalmádena. Laura Haggis from Cudeca was delighted to collect the funds from Anne at the Miramar branch and expressed her gratitude to all the employees at Iceland for their continuous support.
CUDECA volunteers lunch Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice held its annual volunteers luncheon recently.
supporters, including friends and also staff from diverse departments within the Hospice.
The event is a dedication to all the volunteers who help in the day to day running of the Hospice, work in the 12 Cudeca charity shops and those who attend to the patients. The event was very well attended with 175 Cudeca
Following the superb luncheon, Dr. Marisa Martín, chief executive and medical director, and Rafael Olalla, financial director, expressed their heartfelt appreciation to all the volunteers for their dedicated work during the
past year. Marjorie Rodriguez and Gill Henney from Estepona, with Joan Carter who works in the Fuengirola charity shop, were awarded for having reached the grand age of 80 and are still working, each with more than 5 years of service to the Hospice. Natividad Lillo proceeded with the grand raffle and the lucky winners
took home fabulous prizes kindly donated by local friends and businesses. It was a great opportunity for all the Cudeca supporters to get together. For more information on Cudeca and how to become a volunteer, please contact the Hospice Centre on 952 564 910 or e-mail cudeca@cudeca.org.
David The Dogman Why cats scratch part three
PERSUADING YOUR CAT TO USE THE POST, NOT ITS EXISTING SCRATCHING AREA This old area should be covered with a nonscratchable substance like plastic Perspex from a DIY store, transparent stair covering, or tinfoil. The new scratching area should mimic the old – ie horizontal if the old area is horizontal, vertical at the same height as the old. Place the post in front of, or over the previous scratching area/item. If the cat uses the replacement, you can then move the scratching post or device, if movable, a few inches every 3 days, to a better area in the house. When its new scratch post is well established, you can remove the plastic cover off the old area. If the cat continues to scratch the old area, this is because it is more attractive than the scratch post. The old area still SMELLS like the place to scratch so the
cat keeps topping it up. If you can do so, cover this area with something that can be transferred to the scratching post. Ie. a small piece of cloth or newspaper which, once it is impregnated by the scratch scent, can be tacked on to the scratching post. You can also try putting Repel-all, Pet Behave training spray or oil of citronella on the old unwanted (to you) scratching area. Or rub orange peel on it. Tack cooking foil on the affected area. Best of all (for looks) is a product called Sticky Paws sometimes found in mail order catalogues like Lakeland 01539 488100. Check with www.stickypaws.com Or buy double sided carpet tape or double sided Sellotape from a DIY or carpet store. This is what I use on furniture and it works. Much cheaper but not nice looking. Part 4 next week.

Dave & Suzanne Howarth Coin A big “thank you!” to Kym and her team at The News for the safe return of our stolen car. Within two days of the advert being shown in the paper, we received a call from a man called Daryl saying that our car was parked in his street in Rivera Del Sol near Miraflores and his wife said it had been there for a few days. Without the report and picture in The News, it could have been sitting there for weeks!
Clive Irwin I feel I have to respond to your article 'Coin Graffiti' by Jane Newman and what I see as irresponsible reporting. Yes, my daughter’s name is included in that list but, after some investigation, we have established only some of the names listed were the culprits of which she is not one, as are the majority, and by listing all the names they will all be deemed responsible under the tag 'guilt by association'. Grafffiti, as we all know, is an unacceptable blight on our society and can never be condoned but I wonder if your 'reporter' has ever walked around Coin and viewed all the graffiti, clearly done by the Spanish, (which seems to be a national pastime), and noted all the Spanish names that appear, I think not. This is biased reporting at its worst. Writing such an article without researching the subject properly will only fuel the bad feeling held by some locals towards the English and will not help the integration process at all, and by simply including ' Of course, not all of them will have been graffiti'd by the people
Jan Hunt Some weeks ago ARCH, The Andalucian Rescue Centre For Horses (and donkeys), was in negotiations with Alfonso at Los Arcos Centro Hipico to rent part of his installations to house some of our rescued animals. However, his lawyer advised that the terms of his licence did not permit him to sub let space to our charity on a permanent basis, with all the guarantees that ARCH would wish.
The Guardia were called and, after they checked it over, we were told to get a report from the station so we could drive it home. This was not as easy as it sounds. We spent two and a half hours driving round trying to find the correct Guardia office to get the report. Eventually our friend Andy who was driving us managed to find it. “Hooray!”, we all screamed.
We collected our report and drove the car home. So we would like to thank again, Kym and her team, Daryl and his wife for calling us, Andy and Caroline for their help and driving us around and our friend Cynthia for calling the police. We recommend The News to anyone who wants to make sure people read their advertising, reports, events etc., it certainly worked for us!

Set sail For the stars For over 50 years now we have been using rockets to travel in space but it has always been a dream to use a cheaper, more effective, method.
Villafranco themselves' in the article does not help as the damage has already been done by mentioning all the names in the first place. Your 'reporter' also intimated that the parents were bored due to lack of work. Let me inform you now that out of all the names listed, the parents of all but one are gainfully employed and contributing into the system, and the one that isn't? Well that would be me, a retired UK police officer. Perhaps a little more thought ought to go into reporting such matters in the future. Finally, all those named, guilty or not, will be cleaning off the graffiti which will hopefully put an end to this sorry episode. Editor replies: Yes, it is a sad fact that ugly graffiti is on walls, lifts and all manner of surfaces these days with English and Spanish names. I remember when it was used here in Spain pretty much only for political comment but nowadays it seems that it’s sadly just names of who “woz ‘ere” and who loves whoever “4 eva”. There is a school of thought
A.R.C.H. Since the space available was really too small and required a lot of expensive refurbishment, by mutual agreement ARCH decided to look for more suitable permanent premises. In the meantime CYD Santa Maria Rescue Centre have been able to use the vacant stabling at Los Arcos, which is good news because it is the welfare of the animals that is important.
that graffiti in some forms is modern art and in certain areas a wall is given over to the subject so that there is somewhere appropriate to practice their art. As you say in your letter the article clearly stated that the people whose names were written on the play items may well not have been the ones to have written them there and, if I were them, I'd be having a serious word about the ‘artists’ putting my name to anything without my permission! I understand that it was a matter of just two people doing the writing. You are obviously a responsible parent who has bothered to investigate the incident and do something about it - along with some of the other parents - therefore the article worked insofar as the play area will be cleaned up. The article was not meant to imply that the parents of those mentioned in particular were the ones that are bored and not gainfully employed. The fact is though that we are constantly told by ex-pats who don't work here that they are bored and can't find anything to do.
Well, last Saturday January 28th that dream took one step closer to reality with the first ever sailboat in space! Back in November 2010 NASA launched a medium sized rocket into low Earth orbit; on board were several separate satellites but also a bread bin sized package containing a huge sail, the Nanosail D2. At first it was thought to be a failure when the sail failed to deploy but inexplicably the Nanosail suddenly popped out of its packaging and the 100 square foot sail spread its wings like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon and began transmitting data back to mission control.
At first the ship would need to be set on its way using conventional rocket power but as the fuel ran out then it could deploy its huge sail and harness the power of the sun. This is what the Nanosail is testing in space right now and although it is only 10 feet X 10 feet it still has enough sail area to produce movement. Its gossamer like wings were folded down into a box less than the size of a bread bin and weighing less than 10 pounds but it has the potential to haul spacecraft many times its own weight and size. It is currently flying about 400 miles above the earth carrying out manoeuvres.
The days of costly, dangerous, unreliable and relatively slow rockets could be a thing of the past with the advent of sail powered travel. ‘Hang on!’ I hear you say, ‘there’s no wind in Space to propel the sail along’.
And you can get involved! NASA, in association with spaceweather.com are running a competition to photograph the Nanosail either through a telescope or just by catching an image as it passes over your area - if the sun catches the silver sail just right it could appear as bright as the full Moon. 1st prize is $500, 2nd prize $200 with $100 going to third. Competition details at www.spaceweather.com. The Nanosail is currently not visible from southern Spain but I’ll keep you informed if and when it becomes visible.
If you hold your hands out to the sun what do you feel? Heat, of course. But also there is pressure as well – though you've never noticed it, because it's so tiny - it is called the solar wind. The Aurora or northern lights is caused by the solar wind striking the Earth’s atmosphere. Over the area of your hands, it only comes to about a millionth of an ounce. But out in space, even a pressure as small as that can be important. The solar wind also travels very fast through space, theoretically as fast as the speed of light. So a huge solar sail possibly hundreds of square miles in size could capture this solar wind and travel through the solar system faster than ever before.
Ironically, the Nanosail success comes on the exact day of the 25th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. It was on January 28th 1986 that the Challenger Shuttle exploded less than 2 minutes after launch killing all seven astronauts on board including school teacher Christa McAuliffe, the first civilian in space. RIP Challenger.

History rubs shoulders with sci-fi in Valencia
Written by Andrea MacLean
You still have time to hit warp speed and head to Valencia, the first city in Europe to host a massive Star Trek exhibition on loan from the United States.
I
f you are a fan of the show and would love to take Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s seat on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise then you can. The exhibition allows visitors to see the props and costumes as well as to be beamed aboard the Next Generation’s craft, to walk onto a replica of the bridge, to sit in the captain’s chair and say “make it so”, to enjoy a flight simulation, and all for just €7.50 a ticket.
T
he entrance fee also gives you access to the Marvel Superheroes Exhibition – what more could the comic sci-fi fan ask for? You will have to hit warp speed 7 though, because the exhibition finishes on February 22nd and will be heading to another part of Europe.
S
o why was it premiered in Valencia in the first place? Well, that could be
because it is housed in one of the most architecturally spectacular buildings in Spain – the City of Arts and Sciences, which itself smacks of the 24th century with its space age cutting edge design. And it’s one of the reasons why Valencia is so firmly on the map as a place to visit.
I
t’s the third largest city in Spain, after Madrid and Barcelona, and was hard hit by Franco for being the capital of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War after the fall of Madrid. It was a grimy port, which hid its ancient splendours under a layer of grimness. But that has changed over the last few years. The jewels in its historic centre have been lovingly burnished and it has set the bar high with the new architecture near the port. Valencia and the surrounding region has long been known for fruit and vegetables and it is famously the home of
paella. But the city in the 21st century is now being driven by its culture and sport and Valencia has been designated European Capital of Sport for 2011.
H
uge investment was made in the city when it hosted the America’s Cup in 2007 and the breathless pace has not let up. It now boasts the Formula 1 racetrack – the European Grand Prix takes place at the end of June – which loops around the Port America’s Cup, created from the old harbour, plus a showcase tennis court. The fabulous City of Arts and Sciences – which looks breath taking against the Mediterranean blue sky – has been built on land reclaimed from the course of the River Turia. Walk through the park to the Fine Arts Museum, which has the best collections in Spain after the Prado, and carry on walking to discover the
contemporary museum.
art
T
hey are symbols of the modern Valencia and demonstrate a level of investment that has turned Valencia into a vibrant major port – and has certainly put it on the map with the major cruise lines, who include the city in their itinerary. But let us not forget the older part of the town. This is the town recaptured from the Moors by El Cid. He died here in 1099 but his body, propped on his horse, was led out through the gates and the ruse was enough to cause the Moorish army to flee in fear.
I
ts historic centre has been burnished and refurbished. Work has been done to the ancient Moorish walls, 19th century palatial homes have been lovingly restored, and facades gleam everywhere. The maze-like Barrio del
Carmen is the most interesting area to wander around and the distinctive feature of Valencia architecture – its elaborate Baroque facades – are seen everywhere. In the cathedral museum is a gold and agate cup, the Santo Caliz, which is said to be the Holy Grail, used by Christ at the last supper.
A
nd of course Valencia is home to some of the noisiest and riotous fiestas in Spain. So if you cannot make it in time to see the Star Trek exhibition why not pencil in a visit to see Las Fallas de San José from March 15th to 19th. It heralds the coming of Spring and is celebrated with huge firework displays and bonfires and, famously, on the last day huge statues of wood and papier-maché are set ablaze – these can represent politicians, footballers, film stars or anybody ripe to be
satirised. In the second week of July the townspeople turn out for the Feria de Julio and celebrate with bullfights, music concerts and “the battle of the flowers”.
F
rom the Costa del Sol it’s an easy enough if long drive to Valencia. But why not let the train take the strain. Just a few years back the train journey from Malaga to the rather beautifully tiled Nord station, very close to the heart of the town, took 8 hours. Mind you, the train left Malaga on the dot, and arrived in Valencia exactly on time. Now though, with the advent of the high speed AVE, the journey takes half the time. So, why not take a few days out to visit one of Spain’s most important cities – where space age architecture rubs shoulders with a cultural heritage in the most satisfying way.

Tangled
More like The “Nut” Cracker
BY NATHAN GRENO, BYRON HOWARD

Walt Disney studio spent 50 years as the undisputed king of animation –then new kids on the block, like Pixar, knocked Mickey Mouse and co off their perch. Disney lost its way but now the empire has struck back with one of the most expensive films ever made. At $250 million Tangled is even more expensive than Avatar and is far and away the most expensive animation movie. So there is a lot riding on this 3D reworking of the tale of Rapunzel, the princess locked in the tower. It looks like the gamble has
paid off though – critics have been beaming with pleasure at what is Disney’s best animation in years. Wicked Gothel (Murphy) kidnaps baby Rapunzel from the royal palace because her hair has life giving properties. Our heroine dreams of breaking free from her tower and finally she does so with the help of swashbuckling rogue
Flynn Ryder (Levi). So starts the adventure as she and Flynn are chased across the kingdom by Gothel and her henchmen. It’s glorious Disney at its best – beautiful animation, an engaging story and lots of songs. Mind you, it should be. The man behind it is John Lasseter, the former Disney employee who left to help
found Pixar, who was charged with restoring Disney’s fortunes when the studios merged. He was behind the return to “proper” animation in last year’s big success The Princess and The Frog and Tangled proves that he has definitely brought his magic touch to the House of Mickey. It’s a must see for the kids and mums and dads will love it too.

T
he Oscars are upon us, so I thought it only fair to attempt to take some interest and decided to watch and review one of the nominees. Some of this year’s nominees are said to be rather good, like “The King’s Speech” and the Coen Brothers version of “True Grit”. One movie I particularly want to see win an Oscar is “Country Strong” for best song (and for personal reasons), however I didn’t manage to see any of these movies – I got to see “Black Swan”.
I
ventured into this movie believing it to be an arty based film about a ballerina who snaps under pressure, as this was the impression the publicity had led me to believe. However, what I found myself watching was an intriguing psychological thriller with a few jumps. The basic plot (that I was led to believe) is - Nina (Natalie Portman) is a featured dancer in the New York City Ballet who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company .
B
arbara Hershey’s portrayal of Portman’s over protective mother was a little clichéd -“I gave my career up for you” - and also is a little on the “Carrie” side, she’s creepy, and a bit of a nutter – I kept thinking she was going to turn around and start saying “they’ll all laugh at you!” Vincent Cassel was a great character, actually I think he was the best and most believable character in the whole movie.
Y
ou know how like in “A Beautiful Mind” and
“American Psycho”, all this crazy stuff is happening and then you realize that it’s not real and that they are just crazy and you feel a bit daft for believing it. Well, “Black Swan” makes you feel daft every ten minutes and I think what makes it worse is that towards the end (don’t worry I’m not going to spoil it for you) it gets even weirder and then it ends, leaving you in the dark about what was real and what wasn’t.
T
here were some scenes (one with Winona Ryder and one when Portman’s legs go backwards, in particular) I found extremely funny, although I don’t think it was intentional. Some of the horror scenes were quite quirky and if it was black comedy, it certainly worked in a surprising way.
P
ortman certainly has the ‘classical ballerina’ look about her, even though most of the time she was pretty expressionless, but Mila Kunis on the other hand was not so convincing, and in such a competitive forum as ballet, sporting a huge tattoo on your back can hardly be an asset.
I
t is not the kind of movie you’d want in your collection, to watch over and over again – you may find yourself scratching your head at the end of it, but I doubt you’ll be wanting to watch it over again anytime soon. Personally, I still can’t quite figure out “The Usual Suspects”, but “Black Swan”, meh, who cares?

A brand new 12 year cycle is about to begin for you and something that you had put on the ‘back burner’ or that had gone into hibernation will spring to the forefront of your life. Doors are opening wide for you and although nothing is going to happen overnight, this energy will slowly build, so that it manifests as a big ‘splash’ in the weeks to come. This is a terrific time for love and romance when your emotions are passionate and positive. There are exciting dynamics occurring in your career and commitment sector – it is definitely time to wave goodbye to the stale, worn out and old. Take any feelings of discomfort at the moment as a good sign of internal growth as you are expanding your wings and your reach. You are in the process of re-framing your life and blending a mix of different skills together that you have acquired throughout the years. So roll up your sleeves Taurus and get those hands working. There are some pains we experience that we know we have to go through, like after a work out at the gym; our muscles ache immediately afterwards but we feel better in the long run. Your pain may come from having to let go of something that you have had for a long time, it may take discipline, patience and laughter to get through it. So if you do work up a sweat make sure you do it with a smile on your face and a friend by your side. They say there is nothing that a warm bath and a good night’s sleep can’t fix. So take that advice and make sure you look after your immediate needs at the moment. Things couldn’t get much more hectic with many irons in the fire all vying for attention at once but the message is ‘keep doing what you are doing’ with as much dedication and excellence as possible. Passions could be ignited in the love and romance arena as the fire in you burns brightly this week. This is no time to hide your light under a bushel Leo. The world wants you to take the lead and shine brightly, not to put things off or wait for a debate or discussion, but to take action and with personal integrity and excellence put your best foot forward. Finding the best answers and solutions to a problem that would suit all parties puts you way ahead in the game. Your optimism will inspire someone important and step by step you will find yourself getting closer to your dream. There is an opportunity for you to create a blank canvas, leaving whatever is not going to support you on your journey taking a back seat. This is a time for reviewing what means the most to you, values are up for review and you will be prioritising what is important in your life and where you wish to spend your time and energy. Every step you are taking right now is measured in reasoning and you are reviewing how it all will fit into your future.
LIBRA
Some things in life take a long time and you Libra are being put to the test. This is a test of patience as it is hard for you to see the cloud on the horizon with the silver lining, the key is, it is there. It is part of your nature September 23rd - to expand and grow so give it a little more time and you will be able to fly to nd October 22 great heights.

The past is set to rear its head now but you are going to win by a long shot. It has no power over you now and you will get what you want and hit the bulls eye. The sun is shining down on you – so don’t you forget it. This is the time to let your actions and accomplishments speak for themselves and you can ride on the back of your reputation. Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
This recipe can serve up to eight as it's quite rich – or just you if you're a chocoholic! You will need an 8” springform tin - they’re the ones with the clips on the side that you can undo and the bottom comes out easily.
Chocolate Truffle Torte Ingredients: ● ● ● ● ● ●
250g dark chocolate 2 tbsp golden syrup 568ml carton double cream 4 tsp instant coffee granules 1 tsp ground cinnamon cocoa powder, for dusting
Directions 1. Break the chocolate in small pieces into a large heatproof bowl. Spoon in the syrup and pour in about a quarter of the cream. Stand the bowl over (not in) a pan of hot water over the lowest possible heat and leave until the chocolate has melted, about 15-20 minutes. Remove the bowl from the pan and stir to combine. Leave until barely warm - dip your little finger in to check.
4. Fold the two together. Pour the cooled chocolate into the bowl containing the cream. With the largest metal spoon you've got, fold the cream and chocolate together in a figure-of-eight motion. Don't be nervous - keep going until they are evenly and smoothly mixed and the mixture has a soft, pillowy, downy texture - you will see and feel it thicken as you fold.
2. Get your cake tin ready. Do this while you are waiting for the chocolate to melt and cool so you're not hanging around. Cut out a round of greaseproof paper the size of the bottom of the tin and pop it in the bottom then lightly grease the paper. If you have some cooking cellulose, cut strips of it to line the sides of the tin.
5. Set the torte. Pour the chocolatey cream into the tin and level the surface with the back of the spoon. Put the tin in the fridge and leave to firm up. This can happen in under an hour, but you may need to leave it longer, depending on the coldness of your fridge (you can leave it overnight if this is more convenient).
3. Pour the rest of the cream into a very large bowl and tip in the coffee and cinnamon. Whip with a balloon whisk until the cream looks light and thick. When you shake the bowl the cream should wobble like a thick milkshake, and when you dribble some cream from the whisk, the trail it leaves in the cream below should disappear in 1-2 seconds.
6. Unmould and serve. Unclip and remove the side of the tin, then remove the pieces of cellulose around the sides. Invert a serving plate over the torte and turn the torte upside down on to it. Lift off the tin base and peel away the greaseproof paper. Dust all over with cocoa and serve in thin slices.
Chocolate Truffles. Ingredients: ● ● ● ● ● ●
(makes 36)
150ml double cream 350gr plain chocolate, broken up 2tbsp orange brandy 25gr unsalted butter Plain chocolate, melted for dipping White and plain chocolate, grated
Directions Heat the cream in a small pan until boiling, remove from the heat and add the chocolate, stir until melted. Add the brandy and the butter, stir until the butter has melted. Freeze until firm enough to hold its shape, approximately 20 minutes. Using a melon baller, scoop out rounds and place onto non-stick baking paper, chill until firm.
Either roll the truffles in a little cool, melted chocolate in your hands or dip into melted chocolate but do check that the melted chocolate is cool enough to handle before rolling the truffles to coat them with the grated chocolate. Place in a small paper case or roll in grated chocolate. Store in the refrigerator.

Scientists are slowing ageing process
Cyclists unaware of pollution risks Cycling yields many health benefits and should not be discouraged due to concerns about air pollution which, experts have said, are not well publicised.
The ageing process is a complex one, but scientists are slowly unlocking its secrets and are at the point where treatments may soon be at hand to slow or even reverse the process. Last year, researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston reversed the ageing process in mice. They targeted the chromosomes that reside inside the nuclei of all cells, specifically the telomeres which are the caps at the tips of chromosome that protect them from damage. They also shorten with age, until the cells are no longer able to replicate. The researchers manipulated the enzyme that regulates these tips - known as telomerase - and witnessed
dramatic results. Boost the enzyme, and the mice appeared to rewind the clock. However, doing the same with humans could be an altogether bigger challenge. Telomerase has been linked with cancer, and there are likely to be many other mechanisms involved in ageing. But even though a comprehensive picture of how we age is still to be constructed, there are
scientists who are already testing anti-ageing treatments on humans. One of the researchers also works in an ageing laboratory at Harvard Medical School, where he and his colleagues have been working on synthetic drugs called "Sirtuin activating compounds" or STACs. Animal studies have indicated STACs can restore the health and life prospects of obese mice and earlystage trials in humans are now under way. The
research follows earlier work on resveratrol, a naturallyoccurring ingredient of red wine. Both resveratrol and STACs appear to mimic the effects of restricting calorie intake, which has been seen to slow ageing in animals. The researchers said their experiments with something so fundamental as ageing are focused not on extending life, but on extending good health. They said that by understanding the ageing process, they can help combat arthritis,
diabetes, and heart disease, all of which are age-related. A spokesman for Age UK said if effective anti-ageing medical treatments are developed., access to them will quickly become a key issue. “Will everybody be able to get this technology which will give them a longer healthier life, or will it be restricted to the rich and wealthy?" he asked. “And how will the poorer countries regard the richer countries of the world where everyone is living well and living longer?"
Common weed 'could treat' skin cancer Sap from the common garden weed petty spurge appears to treat nonmelanoma skin cancers, according to a group of UK dermatologists. They treated 36 patients who collectively had a total of 48 nonmelanoma lesions with the sap of the plant, which was applied to the skin once a day for three days. The plant sap has been used for
centuries as a traditional medicine. After one month, 41 of the 48 cancers had shown a complete clinical response to the treatment, meaning no trace of the tumour could be found on clinical examination. The lesions which responded positively to one or two courses of treatment were then followed up further for between two and 31
months. After an average of 15 months following treatment, two thirds (68.5% or 30 of the 48) of the skin cancer lesions were still showing a complete response. The researchers say large-scale studies are now needed to test the active ingredient in the weed's sap, a substance called Ingenol mebutate, as a potential new treatment option. They

advise people not to "try it at home" since the treatment is still experimental and can irritate the skin. Most cases of non-melanoma skin cancer can be easily treated and cured with surgical removal or freezing, or using a special kind of light therapy that kills the cancer cells. However, for some people these treatments will fail or are not deemed

Hence the need to give cyclists more information so that they can make informed decisions about when and where they cycle. Air pollution is made up of numerous pollutants that have specific effects on the lungs. The pollution from diesel engines is of particular concern as the small particulates or ultra fine particles which tend to be emitted by diesel engines, can be inhaled further down into the lungs than the larger particles. Pollution also creates gases - sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone – which have certain effects on the lungs. To minimise the risks, cyclists are advised to find alternative routes away from high density commuter traffic and major public transport routes, avoid congested roads, use cycle paths and tracks and seek out treelined routes that offer some shielding from air pollution. And cyclists who really want to be on the safe side should wear masks.

CELEBRITY SPOT
Royals get ready to join Will and Kate on big day Fax machines may be “old technology” but they proved to be the method du jour for Buckingham Palace courtiers to send a “keep this date” message to royal palaces throughout Europe last week. Protocol dictates that the Royal families of Europe are invited before everyone else to Royal weddings and that of Prince William and Kate Middleton is no exception. So last week King Juan Carlos received a fax at the Zarzuela Palace alerting him to the need to keep April 29th free so the Spanish Royal Family can join other monarchs at Westminster Abbey for the big day. They will be getting the goldembossed “stiffie” to prop on the mantle shelf next month when Buckingham Palace is expected to
send out between 1,700-1,900 invitations but there is no word yet on which of the Spanish Royals will attend. Diana and her sons were very close to the King and Queen. And it appears that despite speculation to the contrary, The Duke of York’s ex, Sarah Ferguson, will be invited. Both William and Harry are close to their cousins Eugenie and Beatrice, and it is believed that William decided that he wanted the girls to be accompanied by their mother. However, Fergie is not expected to
be invited to the evening reception to be thrown by William’s father, the Prince of Wales. If she does attend the wedding, she will have to turn down the 28 lucrative offers she has received from American TV networks to commentate on the big day. In the meantime First Lady Michelle Obama has said in an interview that she did not necessarily expect an invite although she confessed to not knowing where the fax machine was in the White House. She told
Good Morning America that her message to William and Kate was to:”Enjoy! Love each other and have fun – and go on a great honeymoon.” Followers of fashion are astonished to see that with just 12 weeks to go, Kate Middleton has not yet broken her silence on who will be designing her dress. But observers are pretty sure that it will not follow the trend set by Princess Diana and Fergie for lavish productions, and that she is likely to want something rather more sleek.
The Palace will want to check it has enough champagne in stock. French producers have warned that a surprise boom in the sale of bubbly could mean that cellars will run dry by April. Producers had been hard hit by vastly increased sales of cava, and other makes of cheaper fizz, and by supermarkets offering heavy discounts on the real stuff. They cut production but have now been caught short by the unexpected boom, and that, plus last year’s small harvest, could lead to a ‘shampoo’ drought
Big fat frocks cost a fortune Connery snubs The chill wind of recession may be sweeping through the world but everyone loves a wedding – and TV viewers are gearing up for the Royal big day by watching open mouthed at the extravaganzas in the reality show Big Fat Gypsy Weddings. The documentary series, currently showing on Channel 4 on Tuesday nights, has been pulling in a near record seven million viewers who are gripped by the jaw droppingly colourful and hugely expensive weddings thrown by caravan dwelling Irish travellers. Sleek and chic does not get a look in – in the world of gypsy weddings big, bouncy, colourful and bling are the keys to a grand day. Viewers have been fascinated to see the behind-the-scenes creation of dresses weighing up to 20 stone, and now internet forums are buzzing with speculation about just how much tarmac has to be laid to finance the bride and bridesmaid’s outfits,
the giant limos, the horse drawn Cinderella glass coach a la Jordan and the open house reception. The programme had revealed that brides suffer welts and bruises to their bodies as the diamante encrusted heavy garments take their toll. In last week’s show Thelma Nadine, of Liverpool based Nico’s Dressmakers, followed the bride with a fire extinguisher in case the fairly lights sewn into her frock burst into flames. She has designed the majority of the dresses in the series and says that they can cost from £12,000 to £50,000. The show also takes a look at other big events, like confirmations, when tiny tots also stagger along in
Bond celebration James Bond movie bosses have been left disappointed after veteran Scottish actor Sir Sean Connery turned down an invitation to take part in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the movie franchise next year. He was the first actor to portray the suave special agent with a licence to kill in 1962’s Dr No, and went on to play Bond seven times.
dresses that weigh more than they do. One little girl last week shrugged out of her frock in favour of a halter neck top and tight spangly leggings which would not rub on the bruises she had picked up during the confirmation ceremony. Experts reckon that the weddings cost a cool £142,000 plus – around six times more than non traveller weddings.
Daybreak presenter Christine Bleakley struggled her way into a pink confection for the morning show last week and confessed that she found it difficult to cope with a frock weighing even just a couple of stones, as she showed her bruises to co-presenter Adrian Chiles. She seemed to think that boyfriend Frank Lampard would run a mile if he saw her in the dress.
Financially troubled studio MGM had delayed the next outing for Bond, but have now announced it has given the green light for the 23rd film in the franchise. It will be directed by Sam Mendes and star Daniel Craig as 007 in his third appearance in the role. The film will be released in November 2012 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the franchise. Studio bosses are planning to mark the milestone with a special event in which all former Bonds would take
part and talk about what playing the iconic character meant to them. Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby and Roger Moore are all in talks to be part of the celebration but Connery has snubbed organisers. He says his health is poor. Studio sources say that it would be a “sad thing” and are hoping that Connery will be shaken and stirred into changing his mind.

Dakar winner as your daily driver? Volkswagen’s Race Touraeg 3 Qatar concept offers just that. It was unveiled at the Qatar motor show and is completely street-legal despite being based on the Race Touraeg 3 which won the Dakar rally in January. Under the bonnet is a 306bhp 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine borrowed from the race-car, which allows for a 0-62mph time of around six seconds. The chassis and carbon composite body are also completely identical to the Dakar car’s.
A great start to the new year
The following week saw the first run of 2011 with some 23 cars taking to the open road. After a cold and wet week Saturday's weather was cool and breezy, but happily dry and sunny, a great relief for the organisers since the same run had had to be cancelled in November because of torrential rain. Members met at the Cueva del Tesoro in Rincon de la Victoria where there was a guided visit round these little known caves before the actual run. There they were introduced to the various legends of hidden treasure not to mention an ancient goddess, and also met the local cafe owner and baker who provided breakast. Then it was off into the Montes de Malaga, climbing up past Totalan to Olias and from there up to Venta Galwey for coffee, passing through some amazing scenery with stunning views on all sides (fortunately, no snow this week). The final leg dropped down through Colmenar and then climbed up the old road from Casabermeja down to Malaga where swathes of almond blossom cover the hills at this time of year. Equally dramatic were the views of the new Malaga motorway in construction! Lunch had been arranged at Venta el Tunel near the La Concepcion botanical gardens. This is

something of an institution for Malagueños who turn out in their hundreds each weekend to eat the house speciality (cazzuela con arroz). The venta has been in business for some 48 years and is always packed. It provides an unforgettable experience of Spanish families out for lunch; it even provides music in the form of Verdiales and holds dedicated fiestas for these musical and singing groups. The next event on the club
there will be a presentation of the President's Cup for the “Club Member of 2010” awarded to retiring treasurer Bob Livermore – owner/driver not only of an original red Morgan but also a stately Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. Members are looking forward to another great year and are happy to welcome fellow enthusiasts. The re-elected chairman is Qasim Shaikh, long-time
Ferrari first to launch Chief designer Nikolas Tombazis explained some of the key changes and design features on the new car Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa have taken the wraps off the first Formula 1 car of 2011. The team hope the car will be good enough to make amends for just missing out on the 2010 drivers' world title. A strategic error at the final race allowed Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel to overhaul Fernando Alonso's lead.
Happy memories: Ross and Scarlet at Streets of London
calendar is a rather special club night on Monday February 7th to be held at the club's original home, The Streets of London in La Cala de Mijas. New and prospective members are welcome to come along. The evening is a memorial to founder member Ross Davis (driver of his distinctive 1958 TR3A “Scarlet”) who sadly died at the end of last year. Chaos at Paralympics The final day of the World Paralympic Athletics Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, ended in chaos and confusion with top athletes refusing to race on a marathon course they described as unsafe. They found out that none of the roads on the course were going to be closed to traffic, and thought it too dangerous to continue. The GB duo of Dave Weir and Shelley Woods made it to the start line but didn't race. The Canadians also pulled out five athletes for

The new F150 - named to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the reunification of Italy - was given a brief run at the team's Fiorano test track by Alonso on Friday and was then flown to Valencia in Spain for the first pre-season test, which started yesterday Tuesday. Alonso will drive for the first two days in Valencia, with team-mate Massa taking over for the final day. The next team
testing will be at the Jerez circuit from Thurs 10th to Sunday 13th of February - it takes about 2 hours to get to the circuit and with the entrance fee of just 10€ is a great day out. The circuit is open from 10.00am to 5pm and is on the outskirts of the city making it quite easy to get to. You can get more info from their website: www.circuitodejerez.com. You can usually find out from there which teams will be testing on which days, and which drivers will be in the cars.

Paul Casey gets back to winning ways in Bahrain Paul Casey finally ended 20 months without victory at the Volvo Golf Tournament of Champions event in Bahrain He called the event "one of the toughest battles I've ever had." It was certainly a day of fierce competition and you only had to look at the leaderboard to see that with 23 incredible changes it was going to be a close call. By the 17th Peter Hanson was in position A, forcing Casey to pull out all the stops if he was going to claim the title and break back into the winning circle again. The 33-year-old from Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, who was left out of Europe’s Ryder Cup last year, parred his final hole for a 68 to finish on 20 under, Hanson finished with a score of 69 and made bogey on 18 to drop back to 19 under and hand the title to Casey. "It feels fantastic - the most important thing to me is winning and that was huge,” said Casey. “The goal is obviously the
Rudman win sets up world title chance Britain's Shelley Rudman secured her second World Cup win in a row to boost her chances of being crowned overall women's skeleton world champion. Rudman defeated Canada's Mellisa Hollingsworth by 0.24 seconds in St Moritz, with overall World Cup leader Anja Huber finishing back in third. Rudman's win helped her reduce the gap on Huber to 11 points. Victory in the regular season's final race in Cesana next week will be enough to clinch her first world title.
majors, but how are you going to win major championships if you can't win regular events?" Colin Montgomerie had tipped Sweden’s Peter Hanson to win the tournament - "probably Europe's most improved player" he said in a recent interview, but Montgomerie was wrong on this occasion as Hanson went from rough to sand then missed from 10 feet and with a bogey five dropped into a tie for second with Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiménez. Jimenez’s game showed promise when he birdied the last and Hanson bogeyed it, but Casey held his nerve making his way out of the rough by the green to squeeze his way home. Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke, South African James Kingston and Sweden’s Johan Edfors all slipped up after holding at least a share of the lead, with Clarke making bogey

Bubba wins as Tiger blobs At the Farmers Insurance Open in Torrey Pines, California, last weekend, Bubba Watson edged out Phil Mickelson in a dramatic finish to the event leaving Mickelson needing to chip in for eagle on the 18th to tie the lead and force a play-off. Watson made six birdies and just one bogey on his way to a 67 as he held off Mickelson, DA Points and Jonathan Vegas. Vegas and Points saw their challenges sink when both found the water on the final hole to fall back, Mickelson’s shot finished a tantalising three feet short of the hole and Watson was then able to celebrate his victory. Defeat leaves Malaga bottom of La Liga Malaga 1 - 2 Real Zaragoza Pellegrini was sitting in the stands and Malaga's team was rejigged after the various sendings off last week. The teams were met with 20,000 black balloons in the stands in protest against the bad calls by officials over the last few weeks which have impacted on Malaga's results. Malaga started well and with confidence and got their just deserves when from a Mtiliga cross Duda fired home after 16 minutes in his 200th appearance for the team. Malaga then went on to hit the post, but credit to Zaragoza, instead of folding they got to grips with Malaga’s strikers Baptista and Rondon. Diogo then went close with a header at the other end later on in the half, but Sergio Asenjo
inspire anything in front of goal. With 3 minutes to go the former Liverpool striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle sidestepped Rosario and beat Asenjo with a fierce angled drive to give Zaragoza an important victory, which sees them move four points clear of the relegation zone and five clear of Malaga, now bottom of the table. saved. But on 39 minutes Asenjo misjudged a cross and Bertollo came in at the far post to equalise. The second half started no better and on 47 minutes Zaragoza were denied a penalty after Kris bought down Bertollo. This time the referee was in Malaga's favour. The home team then brought on their substitutes but even they couldn't
A disappointing end to a really important game leaving supporters shaking their heads. Next week sees the fourth encounter of the year against old Andalucian rivals Sevilla, in which Malaga really must take some points.

Chelsea's Fernando Torres says 'I'm at top level club now' after leaving Liverpool the fans are feeling betrayed You didn't think there could possibly be a footballer as selfish and arrogant as Wayne Rooney? Think again. Step forward El Niño, otherwise known as Fernando Torres. Liverpool did everything to keep their Spanish star happy. They paid him £110,000 a week. They tried to build an entire team around him, looking to buy new players to complement him. But a dramatic transfer deadline day saw Liverpool lose Torres to Chelsea in a record-breaking move, and replace him with Andy
Carroll. In fact the British transfer record was smashed twice in the same day, as Liverpool tied up Newcastle United striker Carroll on a five and a half year deal for £35 million, while Chelsea signed Spanish international forward Torres from the Anfield club for £50 million. Torres's move to Chelsea makes him the fourth most expensive player in football history. His wages will rise to a reported £175,000 a week. Those deals both broke the previous record transfer

The deal which took Torres to Chelsea also breaks the previous record transfer between two English clubs, the £30 million deal between Leeds and Manchester United for Rio Ferdinand in 2002. The Torres and Carroll deals helped take the spending in this January transfer window past £280 million, which dwarfs the amount spent in the same period last year. Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs were all mooted to have bid for the midfielder, but he will stay at Blackpool for the rest of the season at least. Liverpool meanwhile confirmed the arrival of Luis Suarez from Ajax in a five-year deal worth £23 million, while the Anfield

club allowed Paul Konchesky to join Nottingham Forest on loan, barely six months after former manager Roy Hodgson signed the fullback from Fulham. Chelsea's headline capture was undoubtedly striker Torres, but the Blues also wrapped up the signing of Benfica defender David Luiz for £21 million with defender Nemanja Matic moving in the opposite direction. Striker Daniel Sturridge left on loan to Bolton. In all a total of over 400 deals have been brokered this month.
Snooker's world governing body is to investigate Friday's match between Jimmy Michie and Marcus Campbell because of suspicious betting patterns. The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association was contacted by bookmakers concerned about the amount of bets placed on Campbell to win, and said:"We are treating this with urgency." The Snooker Player's Association director Les Barton has spoken to both players, who have assured him that they were not involved in any betting irregularities.

You liar! Newcastle boss Alan Pardew hits out at Carroll Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has hit out at Andy Carroll over claims he was forced to join Liverpool for £35m,Pardew is adamant that Carroll was not forced to leave and that he only did so after seeing his demands for a new wage deal fall on deaf ears. Pardew, who regularly insisted the striker was going nowhere, has claimed that Carroll asked Newcastle for a new deal, despite only signing one in October, and asked to leave once that request was turned down.
