Housing Secretary Beatriz Corredor has revealed in an interview that the Spanish government is to steer a package of legal reforms through Parliament this month, and in coming weeks the government will also
launch a series of road shows around Britain and other northern European countries to promote Spain's property market. She said the new laws would eliminate the confusion that has led in some cases to British home owners being told to knock down their properties because they were illegally built. She asked prospective buyers to “trust in the system that we have and the transparency we provide”, tempting them with prices

This week we are starting a new page in The News featuring Gibraltar. We will be giving you all the latest news on the area together with any events that may be taking place, plus there will be articles on the many things to see and do in the area. We will also bring you any special offers that the shops will be putting on from time to time. Have a look at page 8 – you'll be able to see our Charlotte with one of the local Bobbies with a copy of your favourite newspaper. I have had calls from a number of people over the last week saying how good it was that the local young people from Coin cleaned up the graffiti from a childrens play area and saying that they wished the kids in their area would do the same. Some people have expressed an interest in doing something and have asked about grants for running events, etc., and I will be trying to find out if such things exist and will let you know. The weather here has been nice and bright and fairly warm during the day recently but rain is forecast so don't go putting your wellies, jumpers and coats to bed yet! It’s St Valentine's day next Monday so make sure you remember to buy your loved ones a card and there's plenty of restaurants that are putting on special menus over the weekend and on the day. Have a look throug the paper to see who's got just the card you need and where to go for that special night out.
Thousands of people turned out in Madrid last Saturday to protest against ETA's “truce trap”, a reference to the Basque terrorist group's announcement on January 10th of a permanent, verifiable ceasefire. Leading the march were Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre, the Partido Popular's spokesman in the European Parliament, Jaime Mayor Oreja, and the party's former leader in the Basque Country, María San Gil. They carried a huge banner which read: “No more lies, no more truce
traps, not in my name.” The AVT and the Partido Popular suspect that the government has already signed an agreement with ETA so that its representatives from the banned Batasuna party can participate in the local elections in May. They fear that after the elections ETA will break the ceasefire and the violence will continue.

NEWS Visitor figures Malaga airport has recorded 8.1 per cent more passengers in January over the same month last year, according to statistics released yesterday on Tuesday by airports authority AENA. Of 415,370 international flight passengers, 187,322 came from or were going to the UK. According to figures released on Tuesday by the Malaga Port Authority 2010 was a bumper year for the cruise industry in Malaga. The capital of the Costa del Sol welcomed 659,123 cruise passengers - 35 per cent more than the previous year - and is continuing to consolidate its position as an important port for cruise companies, with predictions of higher numbers for 2011. COIN FIRE STATION SET FOR SPRING OPENING The Coin Fire Station, built on land on Urb Sierra Gorda on the outskirts of Coin and inaugurated in 2009, has finally been given an expected date for opening. The fire station cost 1.2m euros but has never opened for business because the only access for emergency vehicles was on the residential roads of the urbanisation, and local residents registered strong protests about safety. It was decided to build a new access - a link road and a roundabout on the Coin to Cartama road but work was held up after the original company tasked with the job failed in the current recession. Now work is to start on the new access, and is expected to be finished by Spring, when the station will open. EASTER WEEK DISCRIMINATION ENDS For the first time women will be able to participate as nazarenas, wearing white robes with pointed hoods, in the Easter Week processions. The Archbishop of Seville decreed that the religious brotherhoods had to allow women to take part and other cities will follow suit.

Meanwhile, people who have become embroiled in complex legal disputes that have turned into a nightmare for foreign buyers - with some cases ending up in the European Court - warn that changing the law will not solve the problem for new buyers. One such owner said that the government in Madrid “can give all the assurances it wants, but without it enforcing the laws nothing will ever change”.
But the government is now trying to right all the wrongs committed in the past by local councils, builders, real estate agents and lawyers, who all reassured foreign buyers that any issuing bits of papers could be obtained “later” without any trouble. To correct this, a key element in the package of legal reforms is that for any property being sold the local council will be obliged to

The response from British expats in Germany, Italy and France was 38 per cent, 34 per cent and 33 per cent respectively saying that they would move back to the UK permanently.

National News 'New' party rejects ETA violence Members of the banned Batasuna party, which was outlawed by the courts in 2003 because it refused to condemn the Basque terrorist group ETA, launched a new party on Monday that rejects the use of violence. On Tuesday they revealed the party's name – Sortu. Batasuna, long considered the political wing of ETA, has opposed violence in the past without specifically condemning ETA but when making the announcement in Bilbao, prominent Basque separatist Rufi Etxeberria emphasised that the new party rejected and opposed the use of violence "including that of Eta". He was joined at the news conference by at least 10 pro-independence activists, among them

former ETA militant Eugenio Etxebeste. The government has always refsued to give legal status to Batasuna until it rejected ETA. Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said on Monday "it is the first time in many years of violence that the outlawed Batasuna has expressly rejected ETA violence". He said the group had not made "a free concession", but had acted because of a "firmness shown by state institutions and by
Spanish and Basque society". He added that Batasuna's credibility had all but run out because of the many years of violence. It is now up to the courts to decide whether the new party's statutes comply with the law. The main opposition Popular Party has warned that the proposed new party is a "trick" and insists that Batasuna should only be allowed to return to politics if and when ETA is disbanded

Mayor of Madrid appeals to motorists In an attempt to reduce pollution levels in the capital, which are well above the European average, Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon called on Monday for everyone to leave their cars at home as far as possible. The anti-cyclone currently covering the Iberian peninsula has created what looks like a black beret over Madrid, but motorists just ignore it. On Tuesday, traffic on one of most polluting highways – the M-30 – was normal. This road is used by 180,000 drivers a day. And traffic in the centre had dropped by a paltry 0.23%.

Bank of Spain urges wage restraint The Bank of Spain said Friday that it was “absolutely necessary” to maintain wage-rise moderation to ensure that the small growth in domestic economy registered at the end of last year continues. The Bank was underlining one of the reforms called for by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Madrid last Thursday – an end to indexing wages to
inflation. This is something the Bank of Spain has been demanding for years but it remains to be seen if it will figure in the agreement the government and labour unions are currently
working on to make the country's collective bargaining system more flexible. However, the EU is currently considering a proposal by France and Germany for a euro-zone
competitiveness pact that would put an end to indexing wages to inflation which, if accepted, would take the matter out of the hands of the unions and the government.
Special prosecutor for 'stolen babies' cases Attorney General Cándido Conde-Pumpido has decided to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the cases of 261 babies whose families allege were stolen from their mothers shortly after being born, starting shortly after the end of the Civil War and ending in the early
1990s. Sr Conde-Pumpido declined last week to handle the investigation, saying it should be carried out by the governments of the regions where the children disappeared. Investigations are already going ahead in Madrid, Malaga, Cadiz and Sevilla, where most of the baby
thefts took place. The lawyer for Anadir – the Association of People affected by Illegal Adoptions, which formally demanded an investigation on January 27th, said the Attorney General's decision was “a huge step forward”. Justice minister Francisco Caamaño said
the cases denounced by Anadir were “very serious”, adding that the perpetrators should be brought to justice if possible. Some of the doctors named by the mothers are still practising, and many of the nuns and priests who were allegedly involved are still alive.
Sailing courses for unemployed The UGT labour union is offering several sailing courses to people on the dole in Valencia. According to El Mundo newspaper, there is a 90hour course for captains of recreational and sports vessels, and another 130hour course for captains of yachts. The unemployed also have the opportunity to become experts on the history of the labour movement (30 hours) or on union elections (30 hours). The paper said the courses were totally useless when it came to finding jobs but the advantage for those taking them was that they were free. However, the paper pointed out, the courses cost the union 1,000 each which was paid for by subsidies from the government, which got
the money from the tax payers.

Del Bosque and Vargas Llosa made marquises In a rare gesture, King Juan Carlos has awarded the title of marquis to national team coach Vicente del Bosque (pictured right) “for his enormous dedication to Spanish sport and his contribution to fomenting sporting values”, and Mario Vargas Llosa for his “extraordinary universally appreciated contribution to literature
and the Spanish language”. Vargas Llosa, who was awarded this year's Nobel prize for literature, left his native Peru in 1990 after losing the presidential election there and took up permanent residence in Spain. He obtained Spanish nationality in 1993. King Juan Carlos has nothing like the UK's

Health Minister Leire Pajín confirmed last week that the government is studying the possibility of increasing the minimum age at which people can marry from 14 to 16 years, in line with United Nations guidelines. She said she is waiting for the conclusions of a committee of experts working on a draft childprotection law. Sra Pajin was a prime mover behind the controversial reforms to the abortion law which allows 16- and 17-year-old girls to decide whether to terminate a pregnancy without consulting their parents, although they have to inform them of their decision and one parent has to accompany them to the clinic.

Some 40 Swiss police investigators, along with French and Italian police, are continuing the search for two Swiss six-year-old twin girls, missing since their father threw himself under a train on Friday. Canadian-born Matthias Schepp took Alessia and Livia from his wife's home on January 30th. Two senior judicial officials are arguing over whether a new bill includes a provision that outlaws breaking wind in public. Justice Minister George Chaponda claims the new bill would criminalise flatulence to promote "public decency". He told the local radio: "Just go to the toilet when you feel like farting." But Solicitor General Anthony Kamanga maintains that the reference to "fouling the air" means pollution, adding that the prohibition contained in the new law has been in place since 1929. JAPAN

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called the match-fixing scandal a betrayal of the people. Sumo has its origins in religious rites and wrestlers are expected to observe a strict code of behaviour. Ex-cops arrested on corruption charges
Gary Ridgway (pictured), one of the most prolific serial killers in US history, has been charged with a 49th murder. Also known as the Green River killer, Ridgway is already serving 48 life terms in a prison in Washington state. Dan Satterberg, a prosecutor for King County, Washington, told reporters Ridgway had confessed to killing Rebecca Marrero in 2003, when he struck a plea deal in 48 murder charges that saw him sentenced to 48 life terms rather than the death penalty. But Mr Satterberg said the
details he had provided about the killing, including where he picked her up and dumped her body, were inconsistent and authorities did not believe they could support a murder charge. The 20-year-old’s remains were found in December, and her family recently
gave her a proper burial. Ridgway is expected to appear in court to face the new charge on February 18th.

Dewani extradition case announced The extradition case for Shrien Dewani, the man wanted in South Africa for allegedly murdering his new wife, will start on May 3rd at Woolwich Crown Court in London. The 31-year-old was not present to hear Judge Riddle set out the timetable of the case against him. However, his legal team were told he would be required to attend the next hearing at the City of
Westminster Magistrates' Court on March 23rd. Judge Riddle made it clear he had not excused Dewani this time because of his severe posttraumatic stress disorder but simply because the case could proceed equally well without him. Dewani's counsel, Julian Knowles QC, told the court the case against extradition would centre on prison conditions in South Africa;
whether a fair trial was possible; Dewani's mental and physical condition and the possible abuse of process and conduct in South Africa. Mr Knowles said he was having great difficulty communicating with his client and his ongoing ill health was preventing him from taking instruction from him. Dewani denies any involvement in the murder
of his Swedish wife Anni, 28, who was shot dead during a carjacking just outside Cape Town on their honeymoon in November. Four South Africans have been arrested, with the Dewani's taxi driver Zola Tongo sentenced to 18 years for his part in the killing. The South African authorities maintain Dewani masterminded his wife's murder.

News International news coverage for dispute Gibraltar's problems with La Linea mayor Alejandro Sanchez were the subject of a feature in The New York Times last week. NYT reporter Suzanne Daley said that things had been going swimmingly for relations between Gibraltar and Spain in recent years. In the summer of 2009, then Foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos became the first highranking official to ever visit the Rock since Spain ceded the territory to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. And the article noted that while Spain has not given up its claim to the minuscule territory — less than three square miles, much of it the rock — several old disputes have been hashed out in recent years, plus a deal giving Spain access to Gib's
airport which still allows traffic to cross the runways when planes are not landing. Then along came Sr Sanchez and his plan to fill his town’s coffers with his famous congestion charge, or toll, to be levied on some 10 million vehicles that cross the border every year. The mayor claimed the income would start to make up for the environmental impact of all that car exhaust. He told the NYT that La Linea's beaches are lost for tourism because of the long lines of cars waiting to cross the border into Gibraltar. Gibraltar’s chief minister, Peter Caruana, called the proposal “absurd” and Sr Sánchez an “irrelevant pinprick”, according to the New York Times.
The problem is that on the one side Gibraltar's economy is booming, with some 300 unemployed out of a population of around 30,000. On the other side, a sixth of La Linea's 65,000 residents are out of work, the council is nearly €100,000 in debt and can barely pay its workers on time. Sr Sánchez had hoped to have his toll in place by now but EU countries cannot charge tolls at their borders. Sr Sanchez has hired lawyers in Brussels who believe there are ways of getting round this little legal hitch. He told the NYT they were developing a plan which he hoped to unveil in the not-toodistant future.
Plenty to see on Gibraltar There's plenty to see in Gib. Take a break from the fantastic shopping in the Main Street and the Rock's attractive beaches to see the following: 100 Ton Gun (see separate article), the Great Seige Tunnels, the Moorish castle, St Michael's cave, the WWII tunnels, and Parsons Lodge, to mention just a few. If you want breathtaking vistas. take the cable car up to the top of the Rock, or visit the light house at Europa Point at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar. This lighthouse is the most southerly of all Trinity House Lighthouses, being the only one outside the United Kingdom. It stands 49 metres above the High Water mark. The foundation stone was laid by Governor Sir Alexander Woodford on April 26th, 1838, with the assistance of the Masonic Order in Gibraltar. It was opened on August 1st, 1841, attracting over 2,000 onlookers from
No visit to Gibraltar is complete without a visit to the 100 Ton Gun in the Napier of Magdala Battery. The gun was manufactured by Sir W C Armstrong at NewcastleUpon-Tyne in 1870 and was one of twelve built. Eight went to the Italian Navy, two were sent to Malta, and two to Gibraltar. The Gun at Napier Battery is the only one in such good condition. The 17.72 inch Rifled Muzzle loader, or 100 Ton Gun, has a barrel length of 32.65ft, capable of firing up to eight miles. Hydraulic power generated by a steam engine was used to elevate and traverse the gun. It took at least three hours to develop the necessary head of steam to operate the mounting though this was quite acceptable since it took a Man O'War at least three hours to enter the bay of Gibraltar after being sighted off Tarifa point in Spain. The Gun, which actually weighed 100.2 tons, projected a 2,000lb shell with a muzzle velocity of about 1540 feet per second. This required 450lbs of black prism gun powder which gave the projectile a

Of course, shopping on Gibraltar is a must for buying duty free goods such as cigarettes, tobacco, wines and spirits but don’t forget that duty free also covers electrical goods such as cameras, computers and hi-fi equipment that are all available in the many shops along Main Street. Another area of interest is Irish Town that runs parallel to main street where you will find many small restaurants and cafés together with various pubs that serve breakfasts and lunches all at reasonable prices. smashing effect of 33,230ft/ton, allowing it to penetrate 24.9 inches of wrought iron. The normal rate of fire of the gun was a round every four minutes and it required 35 men of all ranks to serve it. It is said that during a visit of the InspectorGeneral of Artillery in 1902 the gun was prepared to fire 5 rounds at full charge. On the first order to fire, the tube fired but that was all. After further attempts still nothing happened so the misfire drill was carried out but to no avail. At the end of the stipulated 30 minutes wait, the General asked for a volunteer to go down the bore and fasten the shell extractor to the projectile so that the gun could be unloaded. After a

A few moments later, to everyone's relief, he was hauled back safely, having completed his task. The gunner's reward, though not princely, was immediate, as it is said that he was promoted to the rank of Bombardier that same day. An interpretation centre was inaugurated on location in October 1994 which offers visitors the opportunity of discovering much more information and interesting facts about this unique 100 Ton Gun.

UK News Rock legend Gary Moore dies
No more ASBOs
Just hours after chatting to a fan that recognised him in the Kempinski Resort Hotel on the Costa del Sol, ex-Thin Lizzie guitarist Belfast born Gary Moore, 58, went to his room and apparently died in his sleep. Staff said that he had been chatty and friendly and seemed fine when he left the bar at around 11pm on what was the first night of a six night holiday he had planned in the Estepona hotel but the alarm was raised at about 4am Sunday morning. He had been drinking champagne and a few brandies and had checked into the 5 star resort with a woman in her 30s who was thought to be his girlfriend. She declined to comment on the death but was said to have made a string of tearful phone calls from the hotel s foyer. Moore regularly
New behaviour orders are set to replace the current ASBOs -regarded as badges of honour among young criminals. The new Criminal Behaviour Order aims to stop criminal behaviour before it becomes a habit with police oficers having the right to sieze property such as Ipods and mobile phones from offenders. It is also likely that under the new rules, police will be forced to investigate any kind of anti-social behaviour by individuals that have at least five complaints against them which will be known as a “community trigger.” The Under-Secretary of State for Crime Prevention, James Brokenshire, called the changes to the government's response to anti-social behaviour "a radical streamlining". He
appeared with the Irish rockers during the 70s but also had a host of solo hits including Parisienne Walkways in 1979, plus a top five single, Out in the Fields, with Lizzy singer Phil Lynott, a year before Lynott died in 1986. The lead guitarist received critical acclaim for his work on the 1974 Thin Lizzy album, Nightlife, but would never be constrained by the music group format. A year
earlier, he had released his first solo album Grinding Stone and his virtuoso playing was to make him a recognised artist in his own right. Throughout his career, Moore was to embrace a range of genres including blues, metal and hard rock. He performed on stage with a range of major artists and released 20 studio albums. A postmortem was carried out in Malaga yesterday.
Hospitals forced to reveal details of cancer failures Women in the north west are facing gruelling treatment for breast cancer after two hospitals wrongly gave them the allclear.Problems revealed in the breast screening programme at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, and the West Cumberland in Whitehaven led to the service being suspended from June last year. Around 1600 mammograms were reviewed with some 180 women being recalled for
further testing but 16 of those re-tested were wrongly given the all-clear and now need treatment. At first, management from the hospitals involved refused to reveal any details of how the system had failed, saying it would breach the rights of the staff involved but, once the Information Commissioner had taken up the case, the hospital trust released details and announced that their findings had required some staff to undergo
further training and others had already left the service. No-one had been suspended or disciplined following the incident and the service had re-started in January this year staffed by personnel from the Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust. And on Monday it was announced that a survey had revealed that less than one in ten nurses think that there is adequate staffing in UK hospital wards due to the squeeze on budgets.
said: "Instead of providing a specific tool to deal with every problem, we aim to introduce a handful of faster, more flexible and more effective tools that allow practitioners to protect victims and communities and get to the root of the problem. It will be an effective toolkit to deal with anti-social behaviour - one that is quick, practical, easy to use and provides a real deterrent to perpetrators". Louise Casey, commissioner for victims and witnesses, said: "I am pleased that the message being sent out from government is that there is no excuse for police and councils to stand by and allow their communities to suffer from lawless, mindless thuggery that makes people's lives unbearable."
Saga recruitment drive in Kent The Saga Group, famous for its over 50s holidays and products, has revealed plans to recruit up to 1,000 extra staff from across the Kent region over the next twelve months to expand its healthcare business based at its headquarters Folkestone, Thanet and Hythe. The company announced plans for more jobs when it opened a call centre at its headquarters in its One Priory Square office block. A spokesman for the firm said: "This is very much a strategic drive to create a
national healthcare business with its roots here in Kent. This expansion means that we are going to be looking for skilled people who know about the health sector as well as people who would like to try their hand at working elsewhere in Saga as we continue to expand." The announcement is good news for those seeking work in the region, after drug company Pfizer announced plans to close their plant in Sandwich, Kent over the next two years.
MP’s wife on trial accused of stealing a kitten
Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming's wife, Christine, 52, is to appear in court over the burglary and theft of a kitten at her husband's mistress’ house last September. After the incident at researcher Emily Cox's house, the MP for Yardley posted a plea for the return of the kitten on his blog saying that there was a reward for the safe return of the kitten and that her brother, Twinkle, was pining for her. He further said that both he and Ms Cox had been out searching for her. Christine Hemming is due to appear for trial on June 21st and has apologised for her trial being paid for out of the public purse. At the time, John Hemming described his domestic situation as “uncertain”. He had a child with Ms Cox in 2005. Mrs Hemming pleaded not guilty to stealing the cat in her pre-trial hearing last year.

Murdered girl’s parents to leave town The parents of 13-year-old Maria Esther Jimenez said last week that they would be leaving Arriate to return to live in Paterna de Rivera, Cadiz province, where her mother was born and where the girl is buried. Her father, Juan Isidro, said he had been offered a job as a watchman at a finca there. He said he and his wife Carmen were leaving because their lives
had been shattered and Arriate only held bad memories for them. They both appealed to the people of Arriate not to make the parents of the
boy arrested for the murder responsible for his crime.
Judges speak out against banks
“Let them live in peace, they are not to blame for
what their son did,” Juan Isidro said. They made the announcement last Thursday, the same day a Malaga judge ordered 17year-old Rubén V. to be
held in a closed juvenile centre until he is formally charged with the murder. He has so far refused to make a statement but the Guardia Civil said the DNA
evidence incriminates him. They also said he was the only one involved in the crime, which they believe was sexually motivated.
The Judges for Democracy association, a national group based in Malaga, has asked for a change in the law to make the handing over of a property sufficient to pay off the mortgage. They said the families who were hardest hit by the economic recession ended up losing their homes but
still had to pay off the mortgages. The judges pointed out that in other European country and the US a mortgage is paid up when the property is repossessed. They referred to two recent cases Zaragoza and Barcelona where judges had ordered banks to take into account
the real value of a repossessed property, not the amount obtained in an auction. In one case, a couple’s house fetched €42,000 at an auction although its real value was €70,000. The couple were expected to pay the rest to the bank to cancel the mortgage. They took the
case to court and the judge ordered the bank to base the mortgage repayment on the property‘s real value. The fact that the Judges for Democracy have taken a stand offers a ray of hope for many people – they might lose their homes but they won’t be saddled with an enormous debt.

Junta to plug illegal Doñana wells The Junta de Andalucia has published a plan to regulate the use of land in and around the Doñana National Park. The plan is aimed at finding a balance between the needs of local farmers and the protection of the park, the country’s largest wetlands and an area of great biodiversity. Doñana, which straddles the borders of Huelva, Sevilla and Cadiz provinces, relies on a huge aquifer to feed it, but local farmers, who produce mainly water-guzzling strawberries, have sunk around 1,000 illegal wells around the park, which are slowly sucking the life out of the aquifer. The plan is now in the public information stage, and those affected by it will have two months to study it. The proposal allows for 9,000 hectares of land to be irrigated, over half of which lies in Almonte, Huelva, a major strawberry producing area. However, the environment ministry has said between 500 and 600 wells will be closed, and all land that has been irrigated since 2004, when the Territorial Organization Plan for Doñana came into
Spending €15,000 in a day When hairdresser Nuria Jimenez won €15,000 on the Day of the Three Kings in Torremolinos, many doubted she would be able to spend it in local shops all in one day, which was one of the conditions of the win. But Nuria is getting married soon and as a result of her win she and her fiancé were able to furnish their new apartment before they've even signed the mortgage agreement. They'll also be going to Paris for their honeymoon instead of Ciudad Real, where they have family. More than 600,000 people had participated in the draw organised by the local stores, who gave out numbers to everyone who bought something in their shops. It's a scheme used in many towns to encourage people to shop locally and the only condition is that the money has to be spent locally and in one day.

Noisy bands allowed temporarily Easter is still a few weeks away but the traditional bands of drums and cornets that take part in the processions have to practice, despite residents’ complaints. The anti-noise pollution ordinance approved by the City Council last December makes an exception for noisy public events “of an official, cultural or religious nature”. A strict interpretation of the regulation would seem to exclude band practices but the Council has given the bands permission to practice from 8 to 10 pm between now and Easter.

ow things have changed. When I lived in Spain in the sixties, most people admired the ETA terrorists as “freedom fighters” because they were giving Franco a hard time. But in time we all realised just how mistaken we had been. After the dictator died, everyone expected them to lay down their arms and join in the transition to democracy. But they gradually stepped up the killings until 1980, the bloodiest year of all, with more deaths – 118 – than in the previous 20 years. The killings dropped slightly over the next few years and in the 1990s and 2000s there were several years with no killings at all.
F
E
S
TA is going to be back in the headlines with a vengeance over the next few months – its political wing Batasuna has now taken another name and condemned violence in the hope of being allowed to take part in May's local elections. This move is being opposed from several quarters – not just the Partido Popular – so I'm afraid ETA won't be going away any time soon.
So just who or what is ETA
E
TA – Euskado Ta Azkatasuna, which means Basque Homeland and Freedom – was formed in 1959 by students against Franco. Until his troops occupied the Basque Country in 1937 during the Civil War, the Basques had enjoyed a degree of autonomy which Franco proceeded to stamp out. He banned their language, suppressed their culture and imprisoned and tortured any Basque who dared to stand up for his/her cultural and political beliefs. So it was not surprising that a group like ETA would eventually emerge.
T
he etarras (ETA members) were mainly vocal in their resistance until 1961, when they tried to derail a train transporting some local politicians who were on their way to attend the anniversary celebrations of the military uprising on July 18th, 1936.
T
hey killed their first victim – a secret police chief in San Sebastian – in 1968. Until then, the regime had tended to treat the etarras as just another bunch of young mischief-makers, but after that first assassination, Franco went after them with all guns blazing, with the result that people – in Spain and abroad – began to perceive the etarras as romantic freedom-fighters.
E
TA really hit the international headlines on December 20th, 1973, when it blew up Franco’s second-incommand, prime minister Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco - with a little bit of help from the IRA – in one of Madrid’s main streets. The bomb was so powerful that the admiral’s car flew up over the roof of a fourstorey building and landed on the
first-floor balcony that ran around its inner patio. After Carrero’s death, it was a case of no holds barred. The regime stepped up its repression and ETA stepped up its bomb attacks. ranco’s death in November 1975 did not put an end to the killings because ETA's only aim was complete independence from Spain for the Basque Country, which – ETA claims – includes the region of Navarra in Spain and the Pays Basque on the other side of the Pyrenees in France - a country at least as big as Wales. o the assassinations and bombings continued. The targets were usually military men or Guardia Civil, but later on in the ‘80s politicians of all parties were added to the list. There were some “mistakes”, such as the attack on a Barcelona supermarket in June 1987, in which 21 shoppers died. ETA later apologised. Another mistake, although ETA didn’t realise it at the time, was the attempt in 1995 on the life of José María Aznar, who went on to win the 1996 election. Naturally, during his eight years in power he did everything possible to drive ETA into the ground, which contributed greatly to the group’s weakening.
B
ut it was the kidnapping and assassination of 29-year-old Miguel Angel Blanco, a councillor for the Partido Popular, in July 1997 that proved to be the last straw for the general public. For the first time ever some six million Spaniards took to the streets in cities across the country in a four-day-long protest to demand an end to ETA’s violence. A few months later, ETA declared a temporary ceasefire but it was too late as far as their image was concerned because after Blanco’s death, most people no longer viewed ETA as freedom fighters, just plain nasty terrorists.
S
r Zapatero doesn't seem to have been among them. His dream was to get ETA to lay down its arms and he rather foolishly started a “peace process” with the group after they declared another truce in 2006, even though the polls indicated that around 70 per cent of Spaniards disapproved of it. He was also made to look a fool. On December 29th that same year, he told reporters the situation with ETA “would be even better a year from now”. The next day an ETA car bomb blew up in the Terminal 4 car park at Madrid's Barajas airport, killing two men who were sleeping in their cars while they waited for their families to arrive.
I
t will be interesting to see how the latest truce ends. Fortunately deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba has no illusions about the gang's real nature so perhaps we'll see the back of them yet. But don't hold your breath.
T
omás Gómez, the Socialist candidate for Madrid regional premier, once again has shown that he is more than just a non-conventional guy. After standing tall to Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero who tried to shoot down his ambitions to run last year, forcing the Socialists into a primary, the 44-year-old Gómez once again wants voters in the capital to be aware that his proposed administration will represent all sectors. That is why it was no surprise that he selected Carla Antonelli, a transsexual, actress and political activist, to join him on his slate. She could become the first member of the transgender community to hold a parliamentary office in any region. But Gómez’s decision wasn’t for good looks or to appease the LGBT community. Antonelli, a native of Tenerife, has been active in politics since she officially joined the PSOE in 1977. She was instrumental in helping the Socialists draft the current gay marriage law and coming up with another measure that makes it easier for transsexuals to have their names switched on their national identity card (DNI).
I
n 1997, she held several positions within the party’s policy making unit concerning transsexual and gay and lesbian rights. But later, she gave it up to continue her acting career on television, appearing as, of course, a transsexual in the short-lived doctor drama series “El Síndrome de Ulises” (Ulysses Syndrome) on Antena 3, and other programmes. Antonelli is a frequent panellist on late night talk show debates, and has appeared in numerous theatre productions. But now she says she is ready to go back into politics. “I hope to become an example that will help break the stereotypes of transsexuals and give us more visibility,” she says. “I want business owners not to put up any excuses when a transsexual person is coming to them looking for a job.”
S
o what does the city’s ruling conservative Popular Party government say about Antonelli’s jump into the race? PP members are choosing their words very carefully. Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre says it is “perfectly” logical “for any person who wants to represent madrileños to do so, regardless of their sexual orientation.”
H
er justice and interior commissioner, Francisco Granados, said he didn’t like to “judge people or evaluate anyone who is on an electoral slate just by their sexual preference”.
T
he fact of the matter is that Antonelli will bring some international attention to the Madrid race, whether or not the Socialists win.

D
on’t you believe that the new Batasuna is a new Batasuna. The party, which was outlawed in 2003 because of its ties to ETA and refusal to renounce violence, presented on Monday a new set of statutes its members hope will allow them to field candidates in the May 22nd regional race. According to the 2002 Law of Political Parties, organisations can only be deemed legal if they reject terrorism or any similar inciting of violence. This time around, Batasuna members, along with the radical abertzale left, said that they would reject violence, including that of ETA. But it still isn’t enough.
S
ome of the members present at one time or another had faced terrorism-related charges, others are still facing charges and are out on bail awaiting trial. The name of the new party is Sortu, but government officials are still sceptical. Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said that "Batasuna's credibility is what it is: at a historical low. I don't want anyone to forget that ETA has not declared an end to violence.” Even prosecutors in the Basque Country are threatening to go to court to keep Sortu from registering. The Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw Batasuna was upheld by the International Court of Human Rights in 2009.
R
adical leader Rufi Etxeberria (pictured), a historical figure in pro-ETA circles, is demanding the government allow his party to register. They are under a tight deadline to ensure that their candidates get on the ballot by May, but I don’t think it will happen. Once prosecutors file for an injunction, the courts will ensure that it will stall until after the elections. And, as Rubalcaba has said, ETA has not laid down its weapons.

New political party meeting
St. Joseph s Catholic Chapel in Las Rampas, Fuengirola is holding a week-long Mission which finishes on Saturday February 12th.
There is a new political party in Coin that will be putting up candidates for the local elections in May.
It will be conducted by Rev. Brendan Keane, one of the leading Redemptorist priests based in Ireland. Father Keane also visited the Las Rampas Chapel two years ago when his mission filled the Chapel for the week. St. Joseph s, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year, is the only Chapel on the Costa del Sol to have daily Mass
in English. While the congregation is mostly Irish, there is also a fair sprinkling of English, Scottish and Welsh members. The Chapel s permanent priest, Father Jay Heneghan, spent 45 years ministering in Seattle, U.S.A. and has been in Las Rampas for the past six years. He celebrated his 80th birthday on February 2nd. For further information, contact Jack Mooney (President ) at 952 661 608.
Called Ciudadanos Para Coin (CxCoin on their posters), the new group is being led by English speaking Doctor Guillermo Alvarez Martin and he is keen to engage the foreign residents in Coin. This Thursday there is a meeting at 9pm at the CxCoin office which is opposite the Health Clinic (Centro de Salud up on the hill), next to the new cafe and hairdressers and the old Feria ground. advertising feature

Keith Baker Be on your guard - the lowlife scum are at it again! Our 93year old neighbour, having just withdrawn a large sum of money from a cash machine at Carrefour Estepona for her grandson's birthday present, was prevented from driving away by a car blocking her exit. A man approached her asking directions. When she eventually drove away she found her handbag had been stolen, containing not only the cash but her credit cards, residencia, driving licence and social security card containing her medical prescriptions. These people had obviously been watching the cash machines and looking for an easy target.
Jan Hunt We always look forward to Wednesday so we can get the next copy of The News. We enjoy all your news articles from local to worldwide, and the articles on places to visit at the beginning of the Out and About section. And we wanted to say that Martin Delfin's column has been a real gem. We appreciate his insightful, independent take on current Spanish events. His column is a great addition to The News. We do tire, however, of Ms. Pilkington's constant, tiresome efforts at beatifying Sr. Aznar. She completely ignores all the bad things he did, like making the state TV a propganda voice for the PP, so like the dictator he was fond of before. He and his party encouraged, or at the least, allowed the greedy speculation in the construction industry that has made it near impossible for younger Spaniards to have a home of their own, caused the overbuilding that has greatly exacerbated this terrible real estate crash we are in now and is responsible for the weekly bad news of all the demolition orders for houses built with the bright eyes of the greedy overbuilding frenzy. Sr. Zapatero and the PSOE had the foresight and courage to put a stop to this speculation, unfortunately for them and the country this was just before the US bankers caused the
Estepona This is the latest of many incidents in Carrefour's car park - they have security officers inside the store but nothing outside where these lowlife prey on vulnerable ladies. Come on Carrefour, you could at least install some surveillance cameras for your customers' peace of mind. The following day the same technique was used at Lidl in Sabinillas. If you are approached by a stranger and you are in your car, I advise you to lock all doors, close windows and sound the horn to attract attention. Do not attempt polite conversation, you will be robbed. Ladies when in the store, please do
not hang your handbag on the hook at the front of the trolley, it only takes a second for it to disappear - I know because it happened to my wife many years ago. Finally I would urge readers to be vigilant; if you notice characters acting suspiciously, make a note of their vehicle registration just in case. Maybe it could lead to the conviction of one of these despicable thieves. In Muslim countries they would lose a hand if caught. Shame the same law cannot be applied here, perhaps that would curtail their activities.
A.R.C.H. worldwide economic crash which made the slowdown in the too hot building market much worse than it should have been, but the slowdown was necessary.
She never mentions his links to the evil Catholic version of Muslim al Queda, Opus Dei, a dangerous, secretive organization with tentacles in every aspect of Spanish life.
If Sr. Aznar was the shining example that Ms. Pilkington makes him out to be (she seems to be a lone voice crying in the wilderness regarding him) we wouldn't be facing such a depression in construction jobs, nor would we have so many people priced out of the market and so many empty unsaleable houses sitting empty now.
It's time she changed her tune and found some new topics. Her irrational bias against President Zapatero and for Aznar is unappealing to any but the most bigoted right winger.
At least the last few times we scanned her column she seems to have finally given up the ludicrous squawking that poor old Aznar's defeat was a con job rather than the trouncing he so roundly deserved. No one claims the terror attack in Madrid was by ETA. Only a few PP hacks gave out that line and Ms. P seemed to beat that dead horse long after there was any question about who caused the awful bombings. Sr. Aznar ignored the will of over 90% of the people in taking Spain into Bush's illegal, immoral war and we see how he was rewarded with his prestige US university job, while Spaniards were dying. Aznar's support of Bush is enough to lower him in any thinking person's esteem alone.
Mr Delfin shows no bias for or against any particular person or party and we appreciate and trust his reasoned columns because of that. So at least we have some political commentary on what is happening in Spain that we can trust now.

Public astronomy Astronomy is the oldest of all the sciences, the first astronomer was a cave man who sat outside his cave one night and looked up at the stars and wondered what they were. Since then we have been asking the same question: ‘What is out there?’ Of all the other sciences, astronomy is also the easiest to study. All that you need is a clear dark sky and your eyes. And up until 1610 when Galileo pointed the first telescope towards the stars, astronomy consisted of no more than simply looking up. But astronomy is not just about looking up at the stars and planets, without knowing it you use astronomy everyday. The reason that we have 7 days in a week and not say 5 or even 10 is because the days are named after the seven ‘not stars’ that were seen in the night sky thousands of years ago. And their original Latin names are a clear indication of their origins. Sunday is obviously named after the Sun, Monday Moon-day, Tuesday is Mars, Wednesday for Mercury and Thursday is Jupiter, Friday is Venus and finally Saturday is Saturn’s day. It’s just as well that Uranus, Neptune and Pluto hadn’t been discovered as a week would be a very long time indeed!
We only need to glance at Ms. Pilkington's column every once in a while to see she is still writing the same piece over and over again with just slight changes, but the same boring theme continues.
There are 360° in a circle, why not 400? which would have made it easier with a right angle having 100°. 360 is almost the number of days it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun-365 days. There are twelve months in a year, the same number of Full Moons that normally occur in a year.
Muriel Pilkington writes: Thankfully we live in a democracy so we are all allowed to air our views, and my editor subscribes to that. The good thing too is that we can spark debate off each other’s opinions. I will stick to mine because they are strongly held, and I defend your right to criticise them. And of course, fortunately, if you don’t like them you don’t have to read my column!
Our seasons are an astronomical event caused by the tilt of the Earth and depending on whether the North or South Pole is pointed toward the Sun determines winter or summer. Many festivals also have their roots in astronomy; Easter is calculated as being the first Sunday that follows the first full moon that occurs after the Spring equinox on March 21st when the days and nights on earth are equal lengths. Christmas was originally a celebration of the winter solstice or shortest day. Before astronomy really took off it was
astrology that ruled everyone’s lives. Even today most people will read their ‘stars’ in the newspaper and find that the Sun is in Libra or that Mars is a ruling planet in conjunction with Saturn and you will meet a tall dark stranger! We astronomers tend not to believe in astrology (and as I am a Capricorn I have a tendency to be sceptical!). But all the signs of the Zodiac are actual constellations in the night sky and the Sun, Moon and all the planets do travel through them all throughout the year. As Earth makes its way around the Sun then different Zodiacal constellations come and go. At this time of the year you can see Taurus, Gemini and Leo. During the summer months you can see Scorpio, Virgo and Sagittarius. If you would like the opportunity to see some of the wonders of the night sky then the Fuengirola Astronomy Society are holding a free public observing session tomorrow evening (Thursday Feb 10th at 8pm) on the jetty at Fuengirola Beach near to the Florida Hotel. There will be a collection of large telescopes for you to see the craters and mountains of the Moon, the planet Jupiter along with other deep sky objects such as galaxies and nebulas. There may even be a shooting star or two. Later on in the evening the planet Saturn with her majestic rings system will be visible. Astronomers will be there to point out the various constellations and stars using their laser beams and if you have a telescope of your own then bring it along and get some help in setting it up and using it.

T
he sun is shining, the temperature has crept steadily higher and last weekend Spaniards and expats alike flocked to restaurants and ventas to strip off heavy winter jackets and soak up the sun on outside terraces while enjoying a tapas or two. And it won’t be too long now before Spain starts to do what it does best and party as cities, towns and villages ready themselves for fiesta. A traditional part of those celebrations is music and dance – most notably the dance and music that is part of the soul of Andalucia -flamenco. Of course flamenco, both in song and dance, is not just celebrated at fiesta. Every town and village has its flamenco club, and artists appear at the small peña or on the big stage in Andalucia’s main cities throughout the year. And famous flamenco stars take this important part of Spanish culture around the world.
T
he roots of flamenco lie firmly in the soil of Andalucia – as much a part of the fabric as its Moorish heritage and its famous white villages – and the province of Malaga was at its birth and development. It has always been an important part of the culture and
history of Spain and now tourist chiefs want to make it as accessible to tourists as a visit to a museum or the beach.
D
espite the economic crisis Spain continues to offer incredible value for visitors and is likely to see an upsurge as some other destinations struggle with domestic difficulties. Tourist minister Joan Mesquida believes that the tourist industry will be a key driver to aiding the country’s economic recovery, and has made it clear that hotel and car hire prices must remain low. Now the Costa del Sol Tourist Board is stepping up its efforts to put flamenco firmly at the centre of its promotional activities. “Malaga en Flamenco 11” will feature 67 shows to take place over the next six months featuring 62 artists.
T
he tourist board will be taking its message to international trade shows and will be looking to encourage the inclusion of the flamenco festival in information provided in holiday packages. They will unveil their new promotional strategy “Flamenco and Popular Traditions” at the upcoming trade show in
Berlin, and are developing a new online guide to the province so that travellers can view flamenco shows that are available, and pick a nearby restaurant to complete their night.
T
he President of the Provincial Government, Salvador Pendón, launched the programme, which has a budget of €160,000, last week and said that flamenco will be an important asset to the tourism industry. Visitors will be able to see top class flamenco at a fraction of the cost they would have to pay for tickets in their home countries. “We want to offer a lot of things, and flamenco must be among them, for it’s a powerful element which can have an activating effect on Malaga’s travel industry,” he said.
A
nd it won´t just be tourists who can benefit –those of us who live here, but have not yet dipped a toe in this pool of music and dance culture, can also make this the year to discover the soulfulness of this art form. Head to the Canovas Theatre in Malaga in the first instance – from next month the theatre will stage almost weekly productions.

s Valentine’s Day rears its lovely head again, I’m looking at romantic, love inspiring and generally heart warming movies.
S
o digging deep into my personal experience and verifying the results with any number of internet list sites, the following are a few examples of some of my favourite loved-up films.
F Something is not quite right in the perfect home inhabited by Becca (Kidman) and her handsome square jawed husband Howie, played by Eckhart. As she clears cupboards and makes appearances at support groups – for what, we don’t initially know – it’s clear that there is a void at the heart of the family. As the story unfolds, the film reveals what that void is – just eight months ago they were a happy, suburban family – but now they are bereaved parents mourning the death of
their young son, killed in a road accident eight months earlier. Becca cannot bear to take off the fridge the paintings that bear the fingerprints of her only child but develops a system of coping methods which enable her to put her despair and grief into a bottle and stopper it up. She finds no comfort in
the familiar every day things, and she and Howie are moving in different directions even while they are trying to find a way back to a life that they can build together. Becca chooses to secretly contact Jason (Miles Teller), the teenage driver involved in the accident which took his own life along a road he
would never have wanted to follow. The film is written by David LindsayAbaire and is adapted from his successful stage play. It’s inevitably painful to watch, but Nicole Kidman is at the top of her game and Dianne Wiest as Nat, Becca’s mother, Teller, and Eckhart are all superb.

Wall Street 2
BY BEN AFFLECK
BY OLIVER STONE
Starring Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jeffrey Renner
Starring Michael Douglas, Shia LaBoeuf It seems only five minutes since this was on at the cinema but a lot has happened to Michael Douglas since filming Wall Street:Money Never Sleeps, wrapped.
This is a gripping and skilfully crafted heistthriller/romance that should have featured much more strongly in the slew of recent awards nominations. As it is, Jeffrey Renner has deservedly picked up a best supporting Oscar nod. Affleck weaves drama and action, wrote the script, and plays the lead as the bank robber who falls for the woman he kidnaps during a heist.
He may not have had the awards recognition he deserved, but in the eyes of the critics his star is definitely on the rise. His first directorial outing was in Gone,Baby Gone, which garnered plaudits and he has maintained his momentum with this. So if you want to be thrilled by hair raising chases, and root for the characters, then this a must-see quality production.
The star has responded tremendously to his treatment for throat cancer and there is no evidence of fragility in his performance here as he reprises the role of the reptilian Gordon Gekko. The movie begins with the disgraced financier leaving prison and collecting his belongings on the way out – an empty money clip and a mobile phone the size of a house brick. Yep, technology has changed since he has been away, but has the ruthless greed
of those who inhabit the world of finance. Gordon sets out on a new mission to tell the world why it is going to hell in an economic handcart. Not up to same mark as the original but still worth a look.

irstly, I guess you have to start with the biggie. Love Story (1970) is really of its time. It’s showing every one of its forty odd years now but as an exercise in miniskirt and preppy fashion, it still stands proud. For those who have never seen the film, those of you under 35 maybe, it’s a classic case of Rich Boy (Ryan O’Neal) giving up his family, his inheritance and his father’s expectations when he meets and falls in love with a beautiful Working Class Girl (Ali MacGraw). Just as he gives up everything for her, she dies. Very sad, very predictable but still very powerful and it set the Mush Standards by which all other romantic movies are now judged. It certainly helped launch O’Neal and MacGraw to super star status and gave the author Erich Segal a chance to write a perfectly awful sequel called Oliver’s Story.
S
etting aside the cliché death of a beautiful young heroine, Love Story plays to America’s class and money fixation but implies in this case that O’Neal’s character Oliver should run off with the penniless girl simply because he’s in love and she’s beautiful. Would the story have worked if she’d been back-of-a-bus ugly? They could have made Ali McGraw look ugly, couldn’t they? If they really tried they could have.
D
on´t get me wrong, I’m not unromantic. I’m just not that keen on the the sugary-sweet Hollywood version of romance although I loved Ghost (he dies this time), didn’t enjoy Titanic’s badly cast take on romance (they both die. Decades apart I’ll grant you but they are both dead by the end of the film) and I still rate Armageddon (her dad dies) as one of my favourite top 50 films.
I
think the best romance in film is the lifelong kind. I
love Batteries Not Included (1978). The old couple have been living in the same building for decades, trapped by the memories of their long dead son. But it is the love that Frank Riley has for his confused and delusional wife Faye that really touches me. And what about Beaches (1988)? Yeah OK, Barbara Hershey dies (this is becoming a common thread) but the love between her and her lifelong friend CC Bloom is enough of an emotional coat peg on which to hang a tear jerker. Even the normally raucous Bette Middler manages to moisten everyone’s eyes as her friend dies in the arms of a comforting rocking chair on an impossibly cute verandah, just as the sun is setting over a deserted beach. Still one of the best tear-jerkers ever to have come out of a VHS rental shop.
I
n terms of missed opportunities and unrequited love, I don´t think you can beat My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997). Despite hauling the object of her affections through a series of degrading and embarrassing scenes, Julia Roberts’ character eventually concedes to her best friend’s unfailing love for another girl and graciously steps aside in a heart warming move that must have won her millions of admiring fans.
H
ome At The End Of The World (2004) also has to be in there too. A little known movie based on a novel by Michael Cunningham, the story follows the loves and lives of two schoolboy friends whose lives are destined to be permanently entwined in an uneasy sometimes bisexual threesome which often leaves Colin Farrell and Dallas Roberts holding the baby. Messy but compelling, the characters’ relationships are founded in love but it’s not so much bi-sexual for Colin Farrell’s character Bobby Morrow, more biamoral if such a thing exists.
S
o whatever your bag: heartbreaking romance, deathbed declarations of love or the tragedy of what might have been, one thing’s for sure, no story encompasses it all like Romeo and Juliet. She dies, he dies, she dies again. That must surely be the ultimate Valentine’s story?

There may be things going on behind the scenes, perhaps someone is not being direct, open and honest with you? It is important that you get to the bottom of what is bugging you because in the end the truth shall set you free. Allow others the chance to say their piece as this will give you the opportunity that you need. Be slow to rise to the bait and take your time and all will reveal itself. Think things through carefully before taking any action this week.
There is a need to create balance in your life - even though by nature you are known to be fickle, a desire deep down wants to establish something. Blazing new trails and becoming the pioneer takes you into areas that can ultimately improve your financial standing. Following the tried and tested is not for you now as your mind is likely to be buzzing with fresh ideas and concepts. When put on the spot make sure that your words reflect your actions and you can’t go wrong. This can seem an emotionally charged time for you when your feelings are close to the surface. Time will prove that things are not as they seem and there are many blessings in disguise taking place. It is right to let go of some serious baggage that has been weighing you down, to stop giving your power away and let go of a hard emotion that is linked to another. Once this shift occurs your reward is emotional strength and with this kind of confidence anything is possible. Getting on with what needs to be done in the background works well for you right now. Trying new ideas, finding solutions to problems, being original and innovative in a quiet yet focused way ensure you remain out of the firing line whilst still being productive. Mars is in a strong position and the likelihood of you being provoked and over-reacting in anger are quite high. It may be wise to let others simmer down before confronting them. Dynamic Virgo – your energy is on the rise and others will feel the changes in you. Some may be threatened by it, others will be worried that you will leave them behind and try and hold you down, but many will be happy to see you truly shine after a time of struggle. Often your sign just accepts what is on offer and doesn’t question it and quite often this can result in you getting much less than you actually deserve. It is your time to move on up to the front of the queue.
You can no longer allow fears to hold you back, this is the time for action - it is full speed, all ahead from now on. Travel enters into the picture and opportunities for adventure spring into your vista. It is good to remember that whatever you encounter nothing is written in stone, even if it appears that way. You can re-write a part of your life and make decisions that are far September 23rd - better for you and you can do it on your own terms. This is a new start for you October 22nd with a lift.
October 23rd November 21st
New channels of communication are opening up that can be quite provocative. It will be really easy to slip into making a mountain out of a molehill and for a high emotional drama to ensue. So in order to endure those curve balls that life has in store for you it will require adaptability, skill in thinking on your feet and objectivity. If a surgeon spent too much time thinking about the “what ifs” it would get in the way of his ability to save a life - live in the moment, Scorpio.
SAGITTARIUS Someone has just switched the light on and, lo and behold, it is as if you can now see why you have been crashing into things and knocking things over all the time. At least now you can see more clearly you will be able to form an action plan to bring everything back in line. The light is not only switching on your vision but it is also switching on your energy – intense relationships are possible November 22nd - where passion and sensuality become one. December 21st
CAPRICORN Perhaps you desire attention and affection right now – that’s fine, but perhaps the attention you are getting is based upon others wanting something in return of even greater value? Paying attention to details is key this week so that matters do not get out of hand. It is worth taking a few minutes to check everything twice and although it sounds dull it, will stop any needless nd December 22 aggravation from occurring. There is something you wanted to do long ago January 19th and you can now with great speed.

...you don’t have to be a chef!
As it's Valentine’s day on Monday, I have given you a recipe just for two, for those who want to celebrate at home.
Chicken Scallopini Ingredients:
Values are the main focus of the week when you are re-evaluating all that is lasting and holds promise in your life. Some cycles have run their course and come to an end and you have gained a new perception and way of looking at the world. There are many changes occurring in your career area - expansion and promotion offers a real sense of excitement and freedom from what you have known. Having those around you that you can trust and rely on is crucial.
LIBRA
SCORPIO
Kym’s Kitchen
You are being launched into a new chapter of existence. It is your turn, Aquarius - one door has definitely closed and another is opening up that is far brighter than you have ever experienced before. The more flexible you can be towards change the easier and faster you will find yourself where you need to be. There is an unusual stability to be found in this time of wild unpredictability - all you have to do is trust and move forward deliberately.
The moment you free someone’s hold over you, you will fly like a bird deciding to be done with something is a powerful position to be in. This week is all about getting busy rather than allowing your emotions to get the better of you. The things you do will bring you a lot more reward than you first expect. It is how it affects others and how one thing leads on to another; it is like finding that the annoying stones in your shoes are actually diamonds.
● 1 clove garlic, pressed ● 240gr butter, softened ● 2 skinless, boneless chicken breasts ● 60gr all-purpose flour ● salt and ground black pepper to taste ● 113gr sliced mushrooms ● 20 capers, or to taste
● 2 tablespoons lemon juice ● 75ml white wine ● 2 tablespoons chicken-flavoured demi-glace (reduced chicken stock) ● 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley, or to taste ● 2 lemon slices
Directions 1. In a small bowl, stir together the garlic and butter until well combined. Set aside. Place chicken breast on a work surface with the thick side facing to the right (if you're righthanded), and place your left hand down on the chicken breast. Using a very sharp knife, carefully cut the chicken breast from the thick side to about 1/2 inch from the edge of the thin side, in a horizontal cut. Open the cut chicken breast and spread it out like an open book. Using a meat mallet, gently pound the butterflied chicken breast out until it's an even thickness. 2. Place the flour into a shallow dish, and dredge each chicken breast on both sides with flour. Melt the garlic butter in a large skillet over medium heat until it stops
foaming, and cook each chicken breast until golden brown on both sides, 6 to 8 minutes per side. Sprinkle each breast with salt and pepper. Remove the chicken breasts to a platter, and keep warm. 3. Cook and stir the mushrooms in the same skillet as the chicken until the mushrooms have absorbed the remaining butter and have begun to turn brown at the edges. Stir in capers, lemon juice, white wine, and chicken demi-glace, and stir to combine. Reduce to a simmer. Adjust salt and pepper again, and stir the parsley into the sauce. 4. Remove the chicken breasts to plates, and serve the sauce over the chicken. Garnish each serving with a lemon slice.

Two weeks ago we looked at the verb "dar" and some useful expressions where it is used. One of my main beliefs with language learning is that it is very important to be able to speak in the past tense. So, this week we'll have a look at "dar" in the past. Di - I gave Diste - You gave Dio - He/She gave Dimos - We gave Dieron - They gave In everyday life Te di el dinero - I gave you the money No me diste el libro - You didn't give me the book Dio un hueso al perro - He gave the dog a bone Dimos un regalo a la niña - We gave a present to the girl. Nos dieron la carta - They gave us the menu. Now, a couple of useful expressions which are usually used in the past tense. Dar is used to say when a clock struck the hour. For example El reloj dio las dos - The clock struck two Dar a luz means to give birth Ella dio a luz a medianoche - She gave birth at midnight Mi nuera dio a luz a mi nieto el dos de abril del año pasado - My daughter-in-law gave birth to my grand-son on the second of April last year. Dar un paseo - to go for a walk Dimos un paseo en el campo - We went for a walk in the country Dieron un paseo con los perros - They went for a walk with the dogs. Darse cuenta - to realise No me di cuenta - I didn't realise ¿No te diste cuenta? - Didn't you realise? Hasta la próxima - Until next time, Ya está That's it Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. Young star backs bear campaign
Noses glow as charity tee-shirt is unveiled the high priestess of punk, wacky fashion designer dame Vivienne westwood, has turned her hand to designing a unique tee-shirt which should be a big seller and swell the coffers for this year’s Comic relief fundraiser. Top stars like Sienna Miller, Emilia Fox, David Walliams and John Cleese, to name but a few, have been lending their support to Red Nose Day by taking part as models for the teeshirts, likely to become a collector’s item.
The tops feature black and white prints of Rowan Atkinson as Edmund and Miranda Richardson as Queenie from the TV comedy Blackadder; William Shakespeare; Hogarth’s The Laughing Audience; a punk, and a

held protests over the years and say that the Ministry of Defence has not done enough to find synthetic alternatives. The standard bearskin is made from the fur of the Canadian Black Bear and the Army purchases the hats, known as caps, from a British hat maker. It’s not the first time that Joss Stone has taken part in a PETA campaign. She has also appeared in adverts calling on people to become vegetarian.

A piece of Royal Air Force history is currently up for sale on eBay, in the shape of a Hawker Harrier jump jet – and its owner is being besieged with offers. He is Chris Wilson, a former RAF mechanic who worked with the world famous Red Devils aerobatic team.
British soul singer Joss Stone is the face of the latest campaign by animal rights organisation PETA to ban the use of bearskin in the making of military hats for British army guardsmen.

But you don’t need to get a pilot’s licence. Chris sold a Sea Harrier to a businessman who wanted it for a spectacular garden feature.
The jump jet up for sale is the world’s last 1st generation two seater model, which he found in derelict condition and rebuilt.

Getting a facelift the natural way
Herbal weight loss pill warning
One day you may well consider going under the knife for a facelift - but until that day why not take natural action through food.
The Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has warned anyone taking the Herbal Flos Lonicerae (Herbal Xenicol) weight loss pill to stop taking it immediately and consult their doctors. The warning was issued after reports of side effects such as palpitations, with one patient at least needing hospital treatment. The capsules, which are sold on the internet and in Chinese medicine shops, are thought to contain an
as yet unknown pharmaceutical substance. Tests are under way to determine the cause of the side effects. Under a new EU directive, all manufactured herbal medicines will have to be registered by April this year, under the new Traditional Herbal
Registration (THR) scheme to prove they meet safety and quality standards. An MHRA spokesman said that since 2005, the agency has found more than 280 examples of socalled “herbal” or “natural” products which had been
adulterated with random quantities of powerful pharmaceutical products, posing a real risk to the public. He said that was the reason the THR scheme was being introduced and why EU legislation had been changed in order to regulate herbal medicines.

SPINACH Spinach is rich in an antioxidant called lutein great for healthy eyes, and also good for preventing wrinkles by helping to retain the skin's moisture and elasticity, increasing lipid levels and preventing damage caused by free radicals. Spinach can also reduce dark circles under the eyes due to its high levels of vitamins K and C. OYSTERS A well known aphrodisiac, oysters can also help with pale, sallow skin or dark circles under the eyes. This may be due to vitamin B12 or iron deficiencies, and oysters have high levels of both. GARLIC This superfood is a natural antibiotic with blood cleansing, immune boosting, antibacterial properties, so it is an
effective, cheap and healthy way to help naturally treat acne. AVOCADOS Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, avocados can help moisturise your skin from the inside and increase collagen production, helping to prevent wrinkles as well as help to reduce acne and psoriasis, while the high levels of vitamin E will help keep your skin supple and prevent premature ageing. BANANAS These are potassium rich, like strawberries, melon and papaya and will help with fluid retention, the primary cause of belly bloating, puffy face and bags under the eyes. Too little potassium or two much salt is a common cause of water retention so redress the balance by eating bananas.

New MG3 launched in China The new MG3 supermini was launched at the Guangzhou Motor Show in China with a fanfare. The majority of the development work was carried out in the UK. They don't do anything by halves in China and when they launched the new MG3 supermini in the country's third largest city they wanted the world to know about it. The unveiling was one of the key events at the Show. Engineers and designers at the MG Birmingham site have been celebrating the success of the car too.
Kubica out of danger Boardman’s Laureus Renault driver Robert Kubica could face further surgery following the crash that partially severed his right hand. The 26-year-old Pole was badly injured in a rally accident in Italy on Sunday and required seven hours of surgery. He was woken up for a short time on
penetrating the front of the car and slamming into the right side of his close friend's body. Recounting the details of
eighth in the drivers' table last season, was in an induced coma following seven hours of surgery before waking briefly on Monday morning.

Sports Awards
Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal and American skiing Olympic gold medallist Lindsey Vonn have won the top honours at this year's Laureus Sport Awards. World number one Nadal took Sportsman of the Year, and Vonn Sportswoman at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi on Monday. Spain's World Cup-winning squad won Team of the Year, while the Spirit of Sport Award went to the European Ryder Cup team for their win at Celtic Manor.
Monday so doctors could assess his recovery before being put under gentle sedation to make him sleep. Renault said the early signs were encouraging but revealed that Kubica may need surgery on his other injuries. "He was briefly woken up by the doctors," said a Renault statement. "He was also able to move his fingers, which is encouraging for the rest of his recovery process. In order to avoid any physical stress, Robert will be put under gentle medication in order to sleep for the next 24 hours at least. Meanwhile, the doctors will decide how they will treat his elbow and shoulder fractures. Robert may have to undergo surgery once again for this, but not for a few days." Sunday's crash saw Kubica collide with a crash barrier on the outside of a fast right-hand turn 4.5km into the first special stage of the Ronde di Andora rally. Kubica's rally co-driver has revealed the full horror of the crash which has left the Renault driver's Formula One career in jeopardy. Fellow Pole Jakub Gerber confirmed that Kubica's catalogue of injuries were caused by a crash barrier
the accident, which took place shortly after the start of the Ronde di Andora rally in Italy on Sunday, Gerber revealed: “We came off on a right turn and until we came to a complete stop it didn't look serious.
"Kubica is conscious, he talks and understands what has happened," said Dr Giorgio Barabino at the time. “The first thing he thought about was his codriver and was informed about his condition.
“Only when I saw that there was a metal barrier pressing into Robert and blocking him moving I realised that the situation was very serious.” The 26year-old is understood to have lost between three and five litres of blood while he lay trapped in the mangled wreckage of the Skoda Fabia he was driving in the low-key rally event. Gerber, who was unhurt,
"Things are going well considering that there was substantial damage. There were huge difficulties we faced and the necessary measures were taken immediately. Kubica lost a lot of blood. That is why the first hour was critical. He was unconscious and could not be operated on when he arrived at the hospital.” It is almost certain that Kubica will be

Bjorn again in Qatar Battling Malaga’s Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn held his nerve at the weekend as vital derby point he shot a three-under-par 69 to win the Qatar Masters Bjorn’s win meant that Spain’s Alvaro Quiros finished as runner up with a four-under 68, to finish on 10 under. Bjorn, the Ryder cup vice-captain, led by one overnight and parred the first 14 holes before birdies at the 15th, and 16th and sealing his 11th European Tour title on the 18th. It was Bjorn’s second win in the Middle Eastern desert, after his superb win over Tiger Woods at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2001.
"It's a big win for me and hopefully it can push me on to bigger things now," said the 39-year-old, who turns 40 on February 18th. "When I play golf like this I know I can be up there with the best in the world.” This was Bjorn’s first title since winning the Portuguese Open in June 2010. He was clearly
delighted as he added "It's been a while so I feel good today. It's nice to get one done finally - and in a strong field. The Austrian, Markus Brier, was only one behind Bjorn at the start of the round but was unable to keep the pace, finally closing with a one-over 73 to finish in a tie for third with Spaniard Rafael Cabrero-Bello. England's David Howell ended with a final-round 68 to finish fifth on eight under par. Martin
Kaymer, who needed a toptwo finish to knock Lee Westwood off the No1 spot ended in a tie for 28th. Kaymer who fired a final round of 71, told reporters: "I was in a position to finish in the top 10 I thought, but the greens are not my friends here in Qatar. Today I played my best golf all week even with a double bogey at the 12th hole. It's
just that the putts didn't drop and while it's a disappointing thing on one hand, I am looking forward to going to Dubai and leaving this tournament behind." This Thursday will be the first time since October 2010 that the top three players in the world, Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods and Martin Kaymer will have played the same tournament. Kaymer added: "I'm not worried about being number one or Tiger going past me and pushing me back to number three as long as I am in the top five in the rankings." The tournament was a huge disappointment for Westwood too, who needed an eagle at his last hole in the second round to stay in the tournament. Westwood watched in despair as his 25-foot putt stopped painstakingly on the edge of the hole without dropping for a two on the par-four 18th, and meant a missed cut for the the world No1, who will now head to Dubai for a week’s practice, before the start of the Desert Classic on February 10th. Let’s hope he can get back on par again!
Sevilla 0-0 Malaga Around 400 hardy Malaga souls made the short trip to the Sanchez Pizjuan, and with all of the other teams around them winning, Malaga had to come away with some points. Malaga suffered an early setback when goalkeeper Asenjo was forced off with an injury with just six minutes gone. Arnau came on as his replacement, but was underworked for much of the opening period as Sevilla failed to spark into life. Malaga were no better and chances were few and far between. Malaga's best chance of the half fell to Baptista, after Rondon had raced to the byline and fired a cross over which was met by Baptista but unfortunately was blocked.
The second half started much the same as the first had ended, but the crowd sparked into life when they felt Gaspar had handled in the box, however the referee waved away the claim and the Sevilla fans reacted by waving white hankies. Sevilla did much of the pressing in the second period, but efforts from fomer Malaga player Alexis and Diego Perotti did Report by Claire Voet not force Arnau into meaningful action. World Cup champion. Huber had not been out of the top three all season, although Rudman had won the previous two races before Italy. Rudman, who finished second in the standings, told her Twitter followers: "I gave everything I could."
She added: "I just didn't have that killer race instinct today that usually sees me through. To be fair, it took all my energy to get to the start line." Rudman, who won silver at the Cesana track at the 2006 Winter Olympics, had resigned herself to not winning her maiden title. But the Sheffield slider was still happy with her World Cup season: "I've had a fantastic season. Six podiums, two track records, two golds. Would have been great to challenge today - as it happens I defended silver." British team-mate Donna Creighton finished fourth, equalling her best result of the season, and Amy Williams, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games gold medallist, was eighth as all the Britons finished inside the top 10.

streak but they remain bottom, four points from safety. Next Sunday they host Getafe at 5pm where nothing but a win will suffice. Report by Scott Forbes

Cheats ban Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were suspended for at least five years after they were found guilty of corruption by an International Cricket Council tribunal.
The 26-year-old Butt, who led the Pakistan team in last year's Test series against England, was banned for 10 years, with five of them suspended, for his part in the spot-fixing scandal. Asif, 28, was ruled out for seven years - two of which are suspended -
while 18-year-old Amir was banned for five. News of the punishment came a day after British prosecutors announced the trio would face criminal charges over their actions in the fourth cricket Test against England at Lord's. Michael Beloff, the lawyer who headed the tribunal, said the suspended parts of the sentence were dependent on the players committing no further breach of the code and attending an anticorruption programme run by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Pittsburgh Steelers almost do.... The Green Bay Packers held off a spirited Pittsburgh Steelers fightback to win Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Texas for their first championship since 1997. Aaron Rodgers stepped up in style with three touchdown passes, Greg Jennings converting two of them, and though the Steelers came within three points of overhauling an 18-point deficit late on, the Packers held on for a deserved win at Cowboys Stadium.
McCLaren gets his marching orders Former England coach Steve McClaren has been sacked by German side Wolfsburg. McClaren took over at the Bundesliga outfit in May after steering FC Twente to the Dutch title last season. But he has struggled at Wolfsburg and has left with the club in 12th place and one point from the relegation zone after Saturday's defeat at Hannover 96. "VfL [Wolfsburg] have parted ways with Steve McClaren. Pierre Littbarski is taking over," said a statement from the 2009 German league champions. Pierre Littbarski, McClaren's former No 2, will replace the former Middlesbrough manager in charge of the club following a string of poor results with the 1-0 weekend defeat to Hannover the final straw. It
was the club's second loss on the spin and continued a miserable sequence of just one win in 11 in the German top flight. In 21 games at the
helm, McClaren managed just five wins. McLaren rebuilt his reputation after being appointed as FC Twente boss, steering the club to a first league title in their 45-year history and becoming the first English coach to win a major European league title since Sir Bobby Robson with Porto in 1996. The 49-year-old
could not replicate the same degree of success at Wolfsburg, winning only five of his 21 games in charge and he eventually lost the
backing of the club only nine months into a two-year contract. McClaren is not interested in the vacant position at West Brom. Former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson remains the West Brom board's preferred replacement for Roberto Di Matteo..
Bendtner: we are worth the money
Sporting
Nicklas Bendtner has risked the wrath of credit crunch-hit fans by insisting footballers are worth their multimillion-pound contracts
Gatland is backed by Wales Rugby Union
Bendtner, who will line up for Denmark against England in tomorrow night’s friendly in Copenhagen, is paid £50,000 a week by Arsenal. But just over a week after Chelsea stunned the nation by paying £50million for Fernando Torres and giving the Spaniard a £170,000-aweek deal, the Dane insisted Barclays Premier League stars are worth every penny. Bendtner said: “There is a price to pay as well for us players. Personally, I think I pay a big price with my body, my time and with never being able to have privacy when I am out and around other people.

“I am not complaining. It’s a natural part of being a professional footballer but it is definitely a price to pay when, for example, you can’t go out to eat in a restaurant with your girlfriend without photographers chasing you. “The biggest thing I miss because of football is that I really, really love to go on a skiing holiday but as long as I have my career, I can’t do that because of the risk of being injured. ‘That is one thing that has been taken away from me by football that other young people can do. “
SPOTLIGHT RUGBY UNION
Wales Rugby Union chief executive Roger Lewis has dismissed the notion of sacking coach Warren Gatland and insisted now “is a time for cool heads and certainly not to chop heads”. Wales lost their Six Nations opener to England on Friday 26-19 and have gone eight matches without a win stretching back to last season. The WRU backed the New Zealander by handing him a four-year contract extension in November and Lewis is adamant Gatland should be given more time to arrest one of the worst sequences of results in the country's history.
FOOTBALL
England must come before clubs Stuart Pearce last night called for Sunday matches to be cancelled before international weeks. The England Under 21 boss, who has been hit by 11 withdrawals for today's friendly against Italy in Empoli, said: “If the national team underachieves there's a clamour by 60 million people. If Manchester United or Liverpool don't win the title, their part of the country will be disappointed, but not like the national team.”
