PM sparks poll frenzy Spain's ruling Socialist party has halved the lead of the opposition PP party in the wake of the prime minister's decision not to seek a third term, a new poll has shown. José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's decision to stand down set off a flurry of polls taking the temperature of the nation – with conflicting results. The Partido Popular (PP) has built a big lead over the ruling Socialists as the government has had to make unpopular decisions to curb the public deficit
and cope with a 20 per cent unemployment rate. But a poll published on Sunday in El Mundo cut the PP lead from the whopping 16.5 per cent revealed in the last poll on March 9th to less than 8 per cent. That would still translate into a vote of around 45 per cent for the
PP at the election poll, compared to between 37 and 38 per cent for the new Socialist leader – defence minister Carme Chacon would secure 37.8 per cent of the vote if she were at the helm, compared to 37.7 per cent for interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba and 37.4 per cent for Speaker José Bono, potentially the oldest

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Dignity
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
I was watching a programme on the TV the other night (yes, I know, I should get out more!) about the British search and rescue team that had been in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami there. It is a simple fact that they are the best in the world at these sorts of operations - better trained and equipped and they took a couple of Border collies with them that are trained to sniff out live people, even if they are unconcious. They were working in sub-zero temperatures, either with a blizzard blowing or up to their ankles in mud, clambering over dangerous debris from the utter destruction the area had suffered and not once did you hear them complain unfortunately, during the time they were there they didn’t find anyone alive but when they found a body, they either removed it if there was a danger of further collapse or they covered it and informed the local authorities dealing with that end of things. They were proud of the fact that even though they had not found anyone still alive, they had given closure to a lot of people still searching for loved ones. The Japanese asked them politely to look in certain areas where friends or relatives might have been and when nothing was found, thanked them profusely then quietly turned around and walked away. So to the fabulous British rescuers who put their lives, voluntarily, at risk for others and the people of Japan, thank you all for your efforts and dignity in the face of tragedy.

Red carpet in Palestine for Royal couple Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas greeted Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia on Tuesday with the full honours that are normally reserved for visiting heads of state, possibly because it is the first time members of a European royal family have visited the West Bank. The Royal couple had arrived from Jerusalem that morning via a border crossing normally only opened for Israeli or Palestinian authorities. The
visit consisted of nothing more than a lunch but that seemed to be enough for the Palestinians, who appreciated the Spanish gesture. In Jerusalem, an
Israeli newspaper reported that after his meeting with Prince Felipe Prime Minister Benjamín Netanyahu is considering the possibility of an Israeli withdrawal
from some parts of the West Bank. President Simon Peres later escorted the Royal couple on a tour round the Holocaust museum, which visibly moved the Prince.
From Ramala the Royal couple went on to Amman in Jordan on the third and last leg of their three-day official visit to the Middle East.
Several arrests in latest 110 speed limit stays Nigerian letter scam Police have detained 18 people involved in a Nigerian letter scam which has relieved victims in the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico and several European countries of more than €11 million. The letter informed the recipient that
he/she had inherited a fortune but the person executing the will needed an amount of money in order to get it released from a safety deposit box in the Bank of Spain. The sums asked for varied from €50,000 to €2 million. After receiving
information from the FBI and the British SOCA, the police and the Guardia Civil raided 11 homes, a restaurant, a call office and several other premises in Madrid and Gerona, seizing seven luxury cars and blocking 114 bank accounts.
The Supreme Court has rejected a request for the suspension of the 110 km per hour speed limit on highways and dual carriageways made by the motorists' associations Dvuelta and Plataforma 140.
The speed limit is temporary and should be lifted by the end of June. It was introduced to save energy after the start of the unrest in Libya, one of Spain's main oil suppliers.

Two 'most wanted' ETA detained The French police arrested two members of the Basque terrorist group ETA on Saturday who had fired on a police check outside Croze in central France with intent to kill before fleeing. After they were captured, fingerprint tests identified them as Itziar Moreno and Oier Gómez Mielgo, two of the most wanted members of the group. Moreno is wanted in Spain in connection with a car bomb attack which partially destroyed the EITB media group's headquarters in Bilbao on December 31st, 2008. The TV channel Antena 3, the newspapers El Mundo,
Marca and Expansion and the Catalunya and Onda Cero radio stations all work out of the building. Gómez Mielgo escaped capture in Obidos in Portugal at the beginning of last year. Police believe he was setting up an ETA base there, now that France is becoming too hot for the group. Back in Spain, in the early hourts of Tuesday morning the Guardia Civil detained two brothers, Aitor
and Igor Esnaola Dorronsoro, in Legorreta, Guipúzcoa province. Both are suspected of being ETA members of many years standing who allegedly distributed explosives, arms and other material to the rest of the ETA commando groups. Their arrest brings the number of suspected ETA members who have been arrested since the group declared a permanent and verifiable truce on January 10th to 40
China to buy more Spanish work hard Spanish debt Prime Minister Wen Jiabao (pictured) promised Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Tuesday that his country would buy up more Spanish debt – of which China currently owns 12 per cent – and would participate in the restructuring of Spain's cajas de ahorro, or savings banks. Sr Zapatero was in Beijing on the first leg of a four-day tour that will take him to the Chinese cities of Sanya and Boao before travelling on to Singapore. Sr Zapatero told Mr Jiaboa that China can participate in the privatization of ports and
airports. He also promised to strengthen Spain's political and economic relations with China. In return, Mr Jiabao said Spain is the best friend China has in Europe. Sr Zapatero is accompanied by industry minister Miguel Sebastian.
A study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), of its members – the 30 richest countries in the world – shows that Spaniards work more hours (4.6 a day) in paid jobs than the Germans (3.75) and the Danes work the fewest. The Mexicans work the longest hours (9) and the Japanese, at 6.3 hours, are also well above the OECD countries' average of 4.7 hours a day. Spain's unemployment rate of 20.5 per cent continues to be the highest one of the OECD countries, where the average in February was 8.2 per cent.
Couple in police car chase A 50-year-old Spaniard and his wife were detained by the police after a wild car chase around Madrid after the man fired several shots from his car. Witnesses who reported the shooting said the man had not been aiming at anyone or anything in particular. Several patrol

Peaceful march marred by riot More than 2,000 young people marched in Madrid last Thursday against the high unemployment rate affecting people under 30 - which is double the national average of 20 per cent. They are known as the nini generation (ni trabajan ni estudian, they neither work nor study). The generally peaceful march
was spoiled by some 300 youths who at the end of the march began to stop traffic in central Madrid streets and ended up
battling riot police. Twelve were arrested, charged with disturbing the peace and fined before being released.

Independence poll falls flat
Judge one step nearer to trial
Just 18 per cent – 250,000 - of people eligible to vote in Barcelona turned out on Sunday for the final independence poll in a fourmonth long campaign to gauge support for the region's separation from Spain. None of the nonlegally binding polls carried out in several municipalities during that period topped a 20 per cent turnout, the last one being as low as 8 per cent. Despite that, a
Supreme Court judge Alberto Jorge Barreiro announced on Monday that the preliminary investigations in the case against National Court Judge Baltasar Garzon had ended and that the oral part of the trial is about to begin. Judge Garzon is currently suspended as the result of another case against him. In this one, he faces charges of illegally tapping the phones of suspects in the so-called Gurtel corruption case. J Judge Garzón, who among other high-profile cases attempted to try former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet for crimes against humanity, launched the investigation into the Gürtel case, a kickbacks-forcontracts scandal involving several Partido Popular politicians and supporters. When the leading suspects were arrested Garzón had conversations between them and their lawyers monitored, because of suspicions that they were collaborating to destroy evidence in the case. The judge said on Monday that the trial is “absolutely arbitrary”.
spokesman for the organiser, Barcelona Decideix, said: "We have made history. Barcelona has voted in favour of independence for Catalonia" However, the poll reflects the fact that around 70 per cent of Catalans are not in favour of independence. The issue cannot be put to the test because the Madrid government has so far refused to allow an official referendum.
Amnesty slams foreign policy An Amnesty International report on Spain's foreign policy published like week described it as “tremendously incoherent” and reprimanded the government for its lukewarm defence of human rights in its bilateral relations with China, Russia, Colombia and Equatorial Guinea. The report also urged prime minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to ask for the release of political
dissidents during his visit to China this week. It also criticised a reform to the Judicial Power Law which has put limits on Spanish judges trying foreign countries for human rights abuses that do not involve Spanish citizens. However, the report praised Spain's support in international meetings for the abolition of the death penalty, the eradication of poverty and domestic violence.

Cuban refugee wants to go home Just days after 37 freed Cuban political prisoners and their families landed in Madrid last week, Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, another freed prisoner who arrived in Spain eight months ago, said he wanted to go home. Acosta said he had been treated in a “hostile and vengeful way” by the Spanish government for having spoken out against the treatment given to him and other freed prisoners. Of the 40 who arrived with him last August, six have moved on to other countries and Acosta said he wants to go as well – “even back to Cuba, where I would accept any treatment meted out by Castro”. The former prisoners and their families have been scattered around Spain and receive €577 a month from the government
“which has to cover everything – rent, food, clothes”, Acosta said. “It's just not enough.” Agreement to release the prisoners came in July 2010 after talks between President Raul Castro, Havana's Roman Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal Jaime Ortega, and Spanish officials. The arrival of the group last week brought to 115 the number who have been transferred to Spain since last July. Cuba has always denied that it has political prisoners, calling them mercenaries paid by
the United States to undermine Havana's rule. More than 30 dissidents remain in Cuban jails, but Havana says those not freed are being held because of other charges, including terrorism, that prevent their release.
IMF ups forecast
N
The International Monetary Fund has slightly raised its economic forecast for Spain's GDP from 0.6 to 0.8 per cent this year and from 1.5 to 1.6 per cent for 2012, still well below the government's estimates of 1.3 percent for this year and 2.3 percent in 2012. It said economic growth would stay under 2 per cent until at least 2013. However, its unemployment forecast was less pessimistic than the government's - at 19.4 per cent for this year and 18.2 per cent for 2012.

Its main rivals – Jazztel, Vodafone and Orange – have increased their market slice to 77 per cent in the past three months, after vastly improving their after-sales services, which had previously been their Achilles heel. Legal system too slow The Ombudsman’s Office received more than 34,600 complaints last year, most of them related to the slowness of the system of justice. The number of court cases has risen sharply as a result of the economic crisis, mainly brought by people who have not received severance pay from struggling companies. As a result the courts, which were generally understaffed and lacking material resources to begin with, have been unable to cope with the deluge. A spokesman said “slow justice is not justice”.

Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission has raised the severity rating of its nuclear crisis to the highest level, seven, because of the total release of radiation at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant, which is ongoing, rather than a sudden deterioration. An official said it was a preliminary assessment that was subject to confirmation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The level seven signifies a "major accident" with "wider consequences" than the previous level,
and has previously only applied to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, where 10 times as much radiation was emitted. There have been no fatalities resulting from the leaks at Fukushima, and risks to human health are thought to be low. The plant's staff
were evacuated on Tuesday after a 6.0magnitude earthquake struck the region. Its operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), said it was checking the status of the plant after the quake, the second to hit in as many days, but said there
had been no reports of problems with external power. The aftershocks come a month after a huge quake and tsunami hit north-east Japan, leaving 13,219 people dead and 14,274 missing. More than 150,000 people have been made homeless.
Nato 'not doing enough' France's foreign minister Alain Juppe said on Monday that Nato is not doing enough to destroy heavy weaponry used by Muammar Gaddafi's forces in Libya and that Libyan civilians remain at risk despite an ongoing bombing campaign. Meanwhile, rebel leaders have rejected the African Union's “roadmap” for a political settlement involving a cease-fire and the suspension of NATO airstrikes, saying it did not meet their basic demand that Gaddafi, his sons and his inner circle leave the country immediately. They also objected to the proposal for calling for reform within the current Libyan political system. They told African Union
negotiators: “We will not negotiate with the blood of our martyrs, we will die with them or be victorious.” In London, former intelligence chief and foreign minister Moussa Koussa, who defected to Britain almost two weeks ago has called for all-party negotiations to prevent his country from becoming a “new Somalia.” Mr Koussa has been kept incommunicado at a safe house, while British officials,
intelligence officers and police have questioned him to establish whether he played a role in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. Mr Koussa told a BBC reporter that the solution in Libya would come from the Libyans themselves, through discussion and democratic dialogue. In Washington, secretary of state Hillary Clinton reiterated the Obama administration’s call for Colonel Gaddafi to leave power and exit the country.

Milk poisoning 'deliberate' Investigators into the deaths from drinking tainted milk of three children said on Monday they had been the victims of deliberate poisoning. They said the industrial salt nitrite had been added to fresh milk at two dairies in Gansu province to harm people. A worldwide recall of Chinese dairy products was a major embarrassment for the country's Communist leadership.

South Korean police have dug up a stash of 11bn won (£6.2m), most of it buried in a garlic field, which they believe to be the proceeds of an illegal internet gambling operation, for which one of two brothers is already in jail. The police said the men’s brother-in-law helped bury the cash, and then helped himself to about 400m won, without telling the brothers he had taken it. He then tried to blame the theft on a workman who was helping to landscape the plot; the
man complained about being falsely accused, and led police to the field. Television footage has shown police pulling out two dozen containers,
each brimming with cash. The police have confiscated the cash and are seeking an arrest warrant for the brother-inlaw.

Minsk metro blast was plot Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has said a deadly blast in the metro system in the capital Minsk on Monday was an attempt to destabilise the country. Eleven people were killed and scores injured when an explosion tore through the Oktyabrskaya metro station, about 100 metres from President Lukashenko's main office and residence. In televised remarks, Mr Lukashenko said the explosion was aimed at undermining "peace and stability". And he hinted at foreign involvement, making a connection to a
blast at an independence day concert in 2008, when about 50 people were injured. That crime was never solved. Mr Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, claimed victory in a presidential election last December, but international observers condemned the vote. When the opposition called a rally in protest, about 600 people - activists
and presidential campaigners - were rounded up and arrested. Some are still in jail. The European Union and the United States imposed a travel ban on Mr Lukashenko and his inner circle because of the crackdown on December 19th. Mr Lukashenko has previously said the opposition rally was an attempted coup financed by the West.
Ouattara calls for calm Ivory Coast's UNrecognised President, Alassane Ouattara, urged restraint after the dramatic capture by forces loyal to him of his rival Laurent Gbagbo on Monday, while French tanks backing the UN peacekeeping mission in the country stood by. Mr Quattara promised Mr Gbagbo a fair trial and said
a truth and reconciliation commission would be set up. Mr Gbagbo had provoked a crisis by refusing to cede power, insisting he had won November's presidential election. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Mr Gbagbo's detention, and confirmed the UN would support the
new government. US President Barack Obama also welcomed his capture, and called on armed groups in Ivory Coast to lay down their arms to boost the chances of a democratic future. There have been allegations of atrocities by both proGbagbo and pro-Ouattara forces.

guard and a British Transport spokesperson said: "The deceased woman has injuries consistent with burns. No other person is believed to have been involved in the incident and it is not being treated as an accident." It is believed that the 43year-old woman had
committed suicide. Overhead power lines were cut while the body was removed and bus services were laid on for passengers to continue their journey and disruptions to the service carried on until late evening.

Gillian Duffy, the woman famously branded a bigot by Gordon Brown, who didn’t realise his microphone was still on, met coalition leader and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg yesterday as he was going to visit a Rochdale engineering firm. Mrs Duffy, aged 66, asked Clegg why he “went in with” the Conservatives and not with Labour. Mr Clegg replied that no-one had actually won a majority and he believed that they had to go with a party that would get things done. He said: “I think it is important you have a Government that can do things because we have to sort out a lot of
mess we inherited from the previous lot." Mrs Duffy asked him if he was happy with the current cuts the Government were making and he told her that anyone who was in Government now would have to make difficult decisions, adding that the current state of the country’s finances were like he and his wife “maxing out” their credit cards, which then had to be paid back. Nick Clegg conceded that he probably hadn’t won her vote after Mrs Duffy told reporters that it was “just the same speak I heard on the radio an hour ago!”
Ambulance jobs to go in cuts The London Ambulance Service has announced that it plans to lose 890 jobs over the next five years, including 560 frontline jobs, but added that most of the reductions would come from “natural wasteage”. The reduction represents nearly a fifth of the service’s personnel and has been widely criticised by union leaders. Chief Executive Peter Bradley said: "Unfortunately we are not immune to the financial pressures facing the NHS. This means all areas of our business will
face closer scrutiny as we look for ways to make savings while improving the care we give to patients. We will be creating an improved and efficient service for patients." Compulsory redundancies will be avoided as much as possible and the majority of the reductions will be made by not filling posts when people leave the service and will further reduce costs by controlling the use of agency personnel. The cuts are expected to save around £53 million.
Agnes Sina-Inakoju was just 16-years-old and hoping to get a place at Oxford University when she was shot in the neck by two gang members using a sub-machine gun while out getting a take-away pizza. Leon Dunkley, 22, and fellow London Fields gang member Mohammed Smoured, 21 were out on cycles when Dunkley, who said he hadn't looked at what he was shooting at, opened fire through the window of the Hoxton Chicken and Pizza shop where Agnes was, and was captured on CCTV. He told the court that he wasn't aiming at anyone, he just fired. The pair, both from Hackney, East London, were found guilty of murder by a 10 – 1 majority at the Old Bailey and each must serve a minimum of 32 years behind bars. Judge Peter Beaumont, the Recorder of London, said: "Gun violence with loaded weapons that imperils innocent people on the streets of London has to be stopped."

Local News Banderas hands over donations Antonio Banderas, who is in town to take part in the Easter processions, has stayed true to his belief that the religious brotherhoods who organise them cannot turn their back on the current economic climate. To back his words with action, he created the Fundación Lagrimas y Favores (Tears and Favours Foundation) which on Monday handed over the money it has collected in donations to the University of Malaga and Cudeca.
The €75,000 donation to the university will enable some 30 students to do postgraduate studies in the United States and Canada. Banderas and his Foundation and other officials all wore a sunflower brooch to hand over the donation of €25,000 to Cudeca, that flower being the emblem of the cancer care organisation. Next year, the Foundation plans to include the Catholic charity Caritas on its list of recipients.

Storks move in A pair of storks have taken up residence in a nest built by the Spanish Ornithology Society and Ecologists in Action in the chimney of a disused soap factory in La Indiana de Ronda. Last week's high winds loosened the nest and the egg laid there fell to the ground but a spokesman
said the storks had returned to the nest after it was secured and it is hoped they will lay another egg. Storks are a part of the landscape in Huelva and Cadiz provinces but are a much less common sight in Malaga, hence the campaign to encourage them to the province.

Criminals hit “radar” aid The radars, cameras and sensors of the Integrated Vigilance System (SIVE) which control almost every vessel that approaches the coastline from Huelva in Andalucia to Tarragona in Catalonia and the Canary and Balearic Islands are a nightmare for drug and people traffickers. The devices, which began to be installed in 2002, have allowed the Guardia Civil to seize hundreds of tons of hashish. They have also deterred boats carrying illegal migrants reaching Andalucia – down from 1,314 in 2000 to 365 last year. As a result acts of sabotage against the devices have increased considerably. Unaware of point-less driving The Automovilistas Europeos Asociados (AEA) has said that some 12,000 people in Malaga province are driving around, unaware that they have lost all their points. A spokesman said many only find out when they are stopped at a Guardia Civil control point, and are fined for driving without points. He blamed this on the Traffic Authority's apparent inability to duly inform people that they have lost points for a variety of reasons since the points system was introduced four years ago.

No English spoken Companies are finding it difficult to find people for their medium to top level jobs because applicants do not speak English, local employment agencies report. Only 60 per cent of people at that level speak English while 80 per cent of the jobs require it. Top management jobs require a total command of English while just over half of the bottom rung jobs require a working knowledge. The same figures apply to the tourist sector where a foreign language is indispensable.

Spot the corrupt candidates

T
B
he election lists all over the country are being closely scrutinised by all the political parties looking for ammunition to throw at their adversaries. While the Socialists concentrate on Valencia where current regional premier Francisco Camps is under investigation over a matter of whether he accepted four suits as a present or paid for them, as he claims, the Partido Popular is trying to keep national attention focused on Seville, where all sorts of dirt is being shifted around.
T
he pro-government press is making it sound as if all the people running for the PP at municipal and regional level in Valencia are involved in the so-called Gurtel case, which started a couple of years back when the question of Camps’ suits hit the headlines. In fact, only Camps, the PP’s general secretary in Valencia, Ricardo Costa, and a businessman are actually being investigated. Another eight people being tried in the press have yet to have a legal investigation opened against them. Little mention is made of four Socialists running in Alicante who are also under investigation for a variety of reasons.
T
he problem here for both main parties is that Camps wins elections. A couple of weeks back, a survey showed he had a 25 per cent lead over the Socialist candidate for premier. The Gurtel scandal started a few weeks before the European parliamentary election but despite the big hullabaloo in the pro-government press at the time, the PP went on to increase their margin over the Socialists.
A T
nd two years down the line it looks as if the Socialist strategy of trying to make Camps look like the devil incarnate is going to backfire once again. he other most investigated region is Andalucia, where the scandals involving members of the family of former regional premier Manuel Chaves continue to emerge. In all, 26 people are under investigation – 11 Socialists, nine from the PP, two from Izquierda Unida (United Left , IU) and four from other parties. The dirt seeping out in Seville will probably affect the municipal election results to a certain extent. However, political corruption has always been endemic in the region and the average man and woman in the street seems inured to it. But the scandals surrounding Chaves could swing the regional election in March next year in favour of the PP. The Socialists have held Andalucia since it was given autonomous status 30 years ago and the psychological effects of losing it are unimaginable.
R
egion by region, both the main parties, the IU and regional parties have nothing to be proud of when
it comes to corrupt practices. The media seems to be losing its bias in favour of the Socialists and are currently publishing more information about Socialist hanky panky.
H
owever, the Socialist Party’s organisation secretary, Marcelino Iglesias, came out with an awesome explanation on Monday, when he told reporters there is a big difference between Socialist and PP corruption. It’s not comparable, he said, because the Socialists are under investigation for “administrative reasons” while the PePes were lining their own pockets. One can only assume that the “donations” the Socialists took for issuing building licences went to a local charity.
M
eanwhile, here in Coin, PP and Ciudadanos por Coin (CxC) posters are being torn down or covered up, while the PP has managed to get the electoral commission to order the Socialist ayuntamiento and the CxC to remove their billboards, which in fact are illegal under current election laws.
A
nd for some reason known only to itself, the council has mounted 36 photos in the passageway leading to the tax payments office called “The perfect marriage between the Catholic Church, the State and the Falange, the State and the Church in the 1950s”. The photos are totally unremarkable and totally boring – lots of black- or greysuited middle-aged men standing around in groups, looking very sombre, or watching religious processions. I can’t think of any commemorative date to justify the expo.
T
he founder of the Falange, Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera was executed by the Republicans on November 20th 1936 while Franco died on another November 20th 39 years later so that date is ruled out. The only viable date is April 1st, the day Franco declared the civil war over in 1939. But that would call for a different set of photos. Or could the council be trying to remind people of what awaits them if they vote for the other party which all Socialists, from Zapatero down, constantly try to portray as Franco’s heirs. They don’t seem to realise that the Falange is on the edge of extinction and the Church is a shadow of its former self, largely as a result of the democracy that bloomed after the dictator’s death.
I
guess we're just going to have to grit our teeth or leave the country until May 22nd, when the local and regional election campaign will finally be over.
altasar Garzón is about to make history once again. The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that he stand trial for allegedly ordering investigators to tap phone conversations between the jailed suspected leaders of the Gürtel corruption ring and their lawyers, which, among other things, is considered a violation of attorney-client privilege. If he is found guilty of the charges, it could mean a devastating end to the suspended High Court judge’s colourful and respected career – he could be forced off the bench for the next 15 years. It would also be the first time since the Transition that a High Court judge is put on trial for abusing his position. In his ruling, Supreme Court Justice Alberto Jorge Barreiro found probable cause to also charge Garzón with aggravated circumstances in carrying out his breach of duty, a count that was not alleged in the original complaint against him.
T
he phone recordings in question took place in 2009 after Garzón threw Franscisco Correra, the alleged head of the Gürtel scheme, and his number two Pablo Crespo in jail after discovering a widespread kickback-fortenders scheme involving Popular Party officials and their cohorts in at least three regions. Garzón, who initiated the investigation, which is now in the hands of the lower Madrid regional High Court, explained that he ordered the surveillance of jailhouse phone conversations in an effort to determine whether the suspects were engaging in a cover-up. The Gürtel leaders are said to have paid off dozens of PP leaders in regional and municipal governments in exchange for public contracts, many of which allegedly avoided the required open bid proceedings. Most of the business engaged by the Gürtel suspects was centred on publicity and special events contracts for local governments. According to Madrid regional High Court Judge Antonio Pedreira, Correa has some €17 million still stashed away in Swiss bank accounts. Correa and Crespo have been awaiting trial inside a Madrid jail since February 2009 while the investigation continues at a snail’s pace. There is concern that Garzón may face trial before any of the suspected Gürtel leaders, which could bring up a lot of legal questions about their prosecution if the High Court judge is found guilty beforehand.
I
n most democratic countries, the concept of attorney-client privilege is golden and evidence compiled by violating it is automatically considered inadmissible at trial. It is very difficult at this point to understand what weighed Garzón’s decision when he gambled in ordering that lawyer-confidentiality be broken. No doubt it was a difficult decision to make and he will have a tough time explaining it in court. But Garzón is no ordinary defendant – he has an
international reputation that took off when he issued in 1998 an arrest warrant for former Chilean strongman Augusto Pinochet. With global jurists rallying to his defence, Garzón last month filed a complaint against the Supreme Court with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg after justices on the Spanish bench charged him with breaking his judicial duty by trying to open an investigation into crimes committed during the Franco era. Last year, the Supreme Court also said he must stand trial on those charges, but that case has been put on hold pending more legal review.
M
any of Garzón’s supporters believe that the crusading judge is being targeted by his own enemies, which include jealous colleagues and members of the far-right who hold the Franco-era with much esteem. But his own self-styled media blitz has not helped Garzón’s causes. Besides writing books and newspaper columns, Garzón has given interviews questioning the Spanish judiciary as well as lawmakers. In February, filmmaker Isabel Coixet’s documentary “Listening to Judge Garzón” was well received at the Berlin film festival, Berlinale. In the 84minute film, Garzón rips apart those who he says want to destroy him. The judge may have already fashioned the noose to hang his illustrious career.
N
ormally, judges in any jurisdiction are not media-friendly; they don’t like getting too cosy with reporters to avoid having them question any of their decisions. In fact, in many places it is against the rules for judges to speak with reporters about particular cases. But this is Spain , where the judiciary walks a fine line between what is accepted and what is considered bad ethics. And, of course, this is also the country where the hanging question of who gets to judge the judge often emerges. Garzón has teetered-tottered between these rules for many years and it was only a matter of time that his enemies would come after him with evil vengeance.

Any European Union citizen over the age of 18 who is included on the electoral register can vote in the up coming local municipal elections and also by arrangement the citizens of Norway, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, New Zealand, Paraguay and Peru. The next election is on Sunday 22nd of May, voting stations are spread throughout a municipality to avoid queues forming and to ease the voting process, each voter is allocated a location where they can exercise their vote depending on where they live. To find out where your station is and to see if you were included on the electoral roll consult your Town hall. If you live in Mijas you can visit the website www.mijas.es and select “Elecciones Municipales 2011” when the page opens type in your NIE/ DNI number - click consult and all will be revealed as if by
magic. On the Mijas site there is a nifty “translate” button which helps if your Spanish is not up to speed yet.
At the polling or voting station you will need to show some valid identification; passport and certificate of registration, residents card with photo (not a copy) or a Spanish driving licence, voting is from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. You will find that your vote is for a particular party and the person leading that party. Also attached is a list of the proposed councillors who will accompany the candidate if successfully elected. The number of councillors that can be elected in any municipality by any party is related to the population figures i.e. those who are registered on the Padrón. The Padrón is a confidential list of residents living within a municipality and is protected under the
data protection laws, it is the basis for calculations for the number of health centres, police officers, fire fighters and schools etc. In Mijas for example, as there are more than 50.000 inhabitants they are entitled to 25 councillors. The amount of councillors that each party obtains will depend on the votes they receive. The democratic right to vote openly and freely in Spain was a hard won fight, fought within living memory, often in the towns and villages where many of us live today. Thousands of Spaniards discontented with the dictatorial rule of General Franco which only came to an end in the late 1970s with Franco's death in 1975 and the introduction of the Spanish Constitution in 1978 spilled many a drop of blood over the years to guarantee this privilege. More nature and bird news from GONHS The Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS) has recently circulated two new issues of its regular publications, The Gibraltar Bird Report and Gibraltar Nature News. The Gibraltar Bird Report, which covers observations of birds in Gibraltar in 2009, is edited by Dr Ernest Garcia. It gives a detailed account of birds seen in Gibraltar during that year, and is illustrated by photographs of a selection of the birds covered. Among the highlights reported was the largest ever influx of Kittiwakes (a type of gull more frequent in the north) during late January 2009, and the unusual sight of a flock of white storks on the ground in Gibraltar, at

The publication also includes the Gibraltar Ringing Report, prepared by Charles Perez, as well as a number of short articles which report observations of interest in Spain and Morocco. Gibraltar Nature News is the Society’s news magazine. This issue highlights the precarious situation in which the Barbary Partridge finds itself – threatened with disappearing from Gibraltar. There is a wide variety of other topics covered, with major articles on Royal Anglian Way and a guide to a number of the most interesting beetles found in Gibraltar. Sierra Nevada – not just for skiers! Written by Gary Dearden
A great day out in the national park with some fabulous, easy walking.
T
his walk, ideal for beginners and families, starts from the lovely mountain village of GüéjarSierra (15km from Granada off the A395) and takes the snow-capped mountains of the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountain range as its backdrop.
W
e made it a weekend treat, staying overnight at the delightful Hotel Juan Francisco in Guejar-Sierra (www.hoteljuanfrancisco.c om) where a comfortable en-suite double room was only €52 inc. breakfast, and the restaurant food was both delicious and plentiful. Note: the hotel staff speak virtually no English – so have fun with your Spanish dictionary!
T
HE ROUTE: From the new Guardia Civil building to the south of Guejar, cross the road to the wooden ‘totem pole’ signpost and walk down the steep, winding concrete road towards the river Genil. At the Restaurante Fabriquilla, turn left (the
sign suggests a dead-end – it’s not!) and pick up the vía verde footpath, a former railway line following the contours of the valley, a few metres above the river.
T
he path is generally flat and easy to follow but, after rain, muddy puddles will form and since this was once a railway, there are also some short, dark tunnels to pass through.
I
deal for cooler months, this would also be a perfect summer walk when temperatures tend to be more comfortable at this altitude and the first kilometre or so is spent in the dappled shade of tall trees growing on both banks of the river, which in parts is deep enough for a cooling dip if the sun is shining.
T
he path rises gently, with steep drops down to the fast-flowing river, but the walking remains very comfortable. A narrow bridge crossing a tributary of the Genil is followed shortly afterwards by the
first tunnel – barely 50m long – after which the path meanders along the river bank for about 1.5km. It emerges at the former Maitena station, where there is now an excellent bar/restaurant with a shady terrace and lovely river views. Be sure to make your first stop here - as with most establishments in the Granada province, drinks came with free tapas – and with steps down to access the river, kids of all ages will love it!

fterwards, cross over the old stone bridge and pick up the track as it continues following the river, but be careful on this stretch as the tarmac surface makes it accessible to cars. It can also be busy on weekends and holidays, when families come to visit the various restaurants lining the way. There is another clear path here, following the same route but lower down the river bank, although we preferred this for our return journey.
A
t around 4km, pass through the next tunnel, which is on the left where the main road bears off to the right. Just after the tunnel is the former El Charcon station, and a few metres later there is another charming bar/restaurant called Los Castaños. Naturally, we stopped for a second drink in the lovely Alpine style bar, complete with log fire, and were welcomed with no less than 9 large plates of hot food – at no charge – between 14 of us! Be warned, this place is very hard to leave…
F
inally heading away from the El Charcon area, and after another tunnel, the valley takes on an altogether more mountainous feel. Several restaurants line this section, so cars still cause a minor nuisance – but it’s hardly the N340! – and at the 5km point you cross another old bridge to continue on the track.
N
ear a third bridge at around 5.5km, you’ll
notice a path off to the right that follows the other side of the valley, which was once the main route up to the mines, higher up at Barranco de San Juan and Barranco de la Estrella. It’s very tempting to veer off here – especially as there are 2 metal rope bridges to experience – but as before, save it for your return.
A
s you follow the track, lining the valley floor there are several severely battered, yet relatively modern-looking buildings that appear to have been the victims of rock falls or avalanches, and an interesting weir with an odd-looking contraption possibly some sort of fish ladder. Trees punctuate the valley sides as it narrows still further until, at around 6km, you reach the final restaurant, sitting on the site of the former Barranco de San Juan station.
T
his is the end of the outward route, and the end of the vía verde, so it’s a good time for another spot of refreshment – and yet
more free tapas – on the sunny terrace. Serious walkers can continue from here on the well-marked path heading up the barranco to the source of the Genil – an 8km circuit, which we decided to leave for another visit.
F
or your return to Guejar, simply cross the river and follow the track on the opposite side, crossing the 2 rope bridges, to pick up the vía verde once again and follow it all the way back to the village avoiding the bars if you can!
U
SEFUL TIP: if you follow the main road back from Maitena station, you can save yourself the final steep climb back up to Guejar village.
Distance: 12km (about 2.5-3 hours, not including stops) Level: easy, with no path-finding problems.

the
SACAB Coin annual horse fair starts today
An eating dilemma delightfully solved at Kaskada
Written by Andrea MacLean
Heading off to La Cañada for a shopping trip always poses a dilemma. It would be lovely – even more so now the weather is so warm – to finish off the expedition with a fabulous lunch. But somehow eating fast food in the shopping centre doesn t cut it. And the thought of having to drive into Marbella or along the coast road to find somewhere doesn’t hold much appeal either.
From today, Wednesday April 13th the annual horse fair and show, SACAB Coin, starts. Held on the El Rodeo area just outside Coin town the event sees breeders from all over the country, together with carriage makers, saddlery and tack companies, feed and everything to do with horses you could think of. There are many competitions and shows of equestrian excellence from now until the close of the show on Sunday at 9pm. Breeders bring hundreds of horses to the fair so, if you need anything for your horse, are thinking of buying one and haven't found one that you like in the ARCH rescue centre or just want to come and have a look at these magnificent animals, Coin is the place to be for the next few days. The fair opens at 9am and horses will be arriving throughout today and until 8pm tonight to be booked in. Tomorrow, Thursday sees the first of the judging starting from 9.30am for 2year-olds and from 4pm for 3-year-olds. The commercial area opens from 11am.
Friday sees the competitions for breeding mares of 4, 5 and 7-yearsold and above, males of 4, 5, 6 and 7-years-old and over and at 9.30pm in the evening a show of equestrian art of Andalucia with the horses being put through their paces. On Saturday from 10am there will be various shows and at 2.30pm there will be the 4th Sacabcoin Cup presentation folowed by the first procession through the streets of Coin of the horses and their carriages with a demonstration of these at 5.30pm next to the main exhibition tent. The last exhibition of the day will be at 9.30pm of the Andalucian horses. The last day is Sunday when all the main competitions and prizes will be taking place from 11am until 4pm and the last Spectacular of Andalucian Equestrian Horsemanship. The whole exhibition closes at 9pm. Please note that the organisers reserve the right to change the times of the shows and competitions.
But now that dilemma has been solved – just minutes away, with mountain and sea views on hand in a spectacularly pretty setting, that lunch option presents itself at Nueva Kaskada restaurant. It’s only been open for four months and is already building a reputation for fine dining and top quality. I had first heard favourable reports about it soon after its opening but before I could get there for a menu of the day lunch, I visited as part of a large party enjoying the Sol Classic Car Club dinner. Another large party from Marbella was in on the same evening so it was a big test for both the kitchen and for the dining room staff – and it was one they passed with flying colours. Despite the two big crowds everything went smoothly and quality food made its way to the tables in good order. The Dutch owned restaurant has well known German chef Michael in the kitchen, turning out international menus prepared to the highest standards at exceptionally good value, working in partnership with Monica and their Dutch behind the scenes friend. Réka is the maitre de’.
traditional with a contemporary twist – charming, welcoming and intimate, despite its ability to seat large numbers of people. A highlight of the the dining room – quite apart from the spectacular fire which forms a cosy heart in cold weather – is the stunning vinoteca, which houses the restaurant’s fine selection of wines and maintains them at the appropriate temperature. Along the outside of the restaurant are tables on the terrace set by the side of the river which cascades its way down the hill – hence the name. And next on the agenda is the opening at the beginning of May of the Andalucian patio with its own chill-out bar, and extensive seating. It’s open every day except Tuesdays and has a special Sunday roast beef lunch with live music from 2 till 5. The menu is mouth watering, with a great selection of meat and fish dishes and a sensational sounding pasta – on offer is the a la carte, or the three
There have been rumours that the restaurant had closed down - well, it most certainly hasn’t so turn off the Ojen road at the side of the old Dafney’s, and follow the twisty road for about 2 kms. Nueva Kaskada is on the right, and car parking is on the left. They do run a shuttle bus too – so ring to find out more on 952 864 378.

Your Highness BY DAVID GORDON GREEN Starring Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman
History is full of tales of chivalry linked to the legends of handsome knights who have rescued damsels in distress, slain dragons and prevailed against the evil baron, sheriff...etc etc. And this is a tale of such a hero – and standing right behind him is his ne’er-dowell younger brother who can be depended on to be undependable. Prince Fabious (Franco) is valiant and adored by his father the king and his subjects. His brother Prince Thadeous (McBride) spends his time doped to the eyeballs and hitting on maidens of easy virtue and generally shirking his
princely responsibilities. So when Fabious’s brideto-be Belladonna is kidnapped by evil wizard Leezar – he needs to obtain a young virgin for a spell and presumably she is the only one available – Thadeous is given an ultimatum by the king...to step up to the plate and help his brother retrieve his love or be banished forever. So the two set off, helped
by fearless warrior Isabel (wow, that Natalie Portman showing off her acting skills in yet another comedy following her blistering Oscar winning performance in psychodrama Black Swan) who is on her own mission to bring down Leezar. Will Thadeous finally discover the hero inside himself....or will he run a mile with his tail between his legs when the going

gets tough. The critics have been divided – yes, it’s vulgar and entirely daft. And a decent cast by no means guarantees a decent product. But a good number of slightly begrudging scribes have admitted to laughing out loud as this fast paced comedy unfolds so grab a bag of popcorn and prepare to be entertained despite your better judgement.

Harry races against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes as he, Hermione and Ron find themselves on the run. Hogwarts is long behind them, paranoid jealousy attacks Ron and all three of the young wizards find themselves living in the wild as they battle to unlock Voldermort’s secrets. It’s all a scene setter for the final ever Potter movie, just three months away, and shows the three main characters in much more grown up mode...this time there are no adults around to help out. Some great action scenes and scary stuff with Voldermort.
It’s 1968 and the 187 women machinists in the Ford Motor Plant at Dagenham are getting a raw deal compared to the 55,000 men who work at the plant. They earn less and their working conditions are poor and when Ford bosses re-grade their jobs to unskilled the women’s patience finally snaps. Hoskins plays sympathetic union organiser Albert who backs the women all the way as they begin their historic battle for equality. It’s a great ensemble cast featuring top British names.
hile the seventies brought us disaster movies galore, the eighties started off with the greatest disaster spoof of all time in the shape of Airplane!. Released in 1980, Airplane! played on its successful namesake Airport (and Airport 75, 77, 79 etc.), using the now well-rehearsed action and drama format that weaves small, personal stories into an intertwined plot of heroism, loss, triumph and destruction. What nobody could have predicted at the time Airplane! was conceived, was just how successful the spoof disaster movie would be or how the deadpan delivery of serious actors would launch lengthy comedy careers for the likes of Leslie Nielsen and Lloyd Bridges.
W
hile a love-sick exfighter pilot boards a plane to overcome his fear of flying to win back his stewardess girlfriend, the crew and most of the passengers of the Los Angeles to Chicago flight become ill from food poisoning from a dodgy fish dish. A blow-up auto pilot called Otto can get the plane to Chicago but someone needs to step up to the mark to actually land the jumbo and save the lives of everyone on board.
M
y favourite character in the film is the mature and prim passenger, played by veteran actress Barbara Billingsley, who offers to help when the stewardess has problems understanding two young black guys who speak in a very stylised slang. “Excuse me Miss, I speak Jive” she says, whilst wearing her twin set and pearls, as she launches into a very slick delivery that won her the hearts of millions. The use of simple word-play gags throughout the movie came to be a signature for spoof movies, while the scene with a well-meaning, guitar playing nun who accidently rips the intravenous medication from a sickly child, is pure Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin slapstick.
T
he clever thing about Airplane! is that 30 years on, and no matter how many times you have seen the film, there are always gags going on in the background that you have never noticed before. In recognition of the slick script
and superb delivery, Airplane has made its mark in film history. Regularly cited in comedy film listings and awards, the film still has one of the highest ratings on review websites, achieving 98% on www.rottentomatoes.com. Perhaps its biggest legacy is in the funny but comfortable spoof films that followed, particularly the Naked Gun films with Leslie Nielsen and Hot Shots with Lloyd Bridges.
T
wenty years after Airplane! parodied the disaster movies of the seventies, Scary Movie did the same for the horror films of the eighties and nineties. The plot features references to Bruce Willis’ Sixth Sense, Wes Craven’s Scream, the over-hyped camcorder thriller The Blair Witch Project and some memorable moves stolen straight from the choreography of Keanu Reeves’ sci-fi classic, The Matrix but it is the slasher movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer that keep the comedy dark. People do get killed in the film and the first is home alone teen Drew Decker, played by the curvaceous Carmen Electra. When she is stabbed in the chest, initially it is only her fake boob that is the victim but after her Dad runs her down on the driveway, the killer does eventually hit the mark. Following Drew’s death, her friends find themselves being picked off by a masked killer in what looks like a revenge plot for their part in a hit and run accident that they had covered up exactly one year beforehand.
T
he thing about Scary Movie is that to get the best out of it, you need to have seen all the reference films, otherwise the jokes are meaningless. Not so with Airplane! which has a humour that stands on its own. Surely this has to be the best spoof of all time. May I call you Shirley?

Jane Ferrari I have noticed in my local town hall that they have a lot of old black and white photographs that they have made up into a huge framed display for everyone to see as they walk into the town hall building in Plaza de la Villa. They seemed to mostly, somewhere in the picture, have a symbol that looked like a yolk that you would use on a bullock or cow with a lot of arrows in a fan shape going through it.
Peter Orwell Firstly, let me say a big thank to the people who write and publish The News every week. I get up quite early every Wednesday to make sure that I get my copy before it’s all gone and I sit and have a cup of coffee in a cafe overlooking the sea while I read a few bits

Coin I did not know what this symbolised so I asked a collegue of mine what it all meant and it is apparently the symbol of an old very right wing group called the Falange that most of the older population would remember and are apparently terrified of, as people were killed and were made to “disappear” by this group. Why therefore were the pictures in our town hall, I asked. I was told it was obvious. The local party is at
the moment the socialist PSOE party, elections are coming up and they are trying to remind the people what it could be like if another, more right-wing group got into power! As the PSOE are in power at the moment and it is only the PSOE that can display what they want in the town hall, this is not exactly what one might call fair play, is it?

However, as I consider myself a responsible dog owner, I have little bags that I carry around with me so that I can clean up the mess they leave behind them. This is very easy to do and, if you don’t want to spent lots of money on “doggie do” kits from pet shops, you can buy simple sandwich bags from Lidl or Mercadona. So, please, everyone with a dog act responsibly and stop people moaning about all the mess on the streets - I don’t want to walk in it and I’m sure you wouldn’t like to either. If you have a dog, love it to bits but clean up after it.

It was 50 years to the day that a 27 year old Russian carpenter’s son named Yuri Gagarin became the first man to travel into space. During the late 1950s and early 1960s America and the USSR were about to go head to head in what was to become the most expensive race in history, the Space Race. To go back to the beginning, one or two early pioneers had experimented with rockets, in particular the American inventor Robert Goddard, who had made several flights up to about 2 miles altitude in the 1930s. But the real successes were made by German rocket scientist Werner Von Braun who created the V2 rockets that were fired on London during the latter stages of the Second World War. At the end of the war, Von Braun surrendered himself to the American army and was quickly sent to the States taking with him all that he had learned during his time working for the Nazis. His past ‘misdemeanours’ were quietly forgotten as the cold war between Russia and the USA developed, it was realized that rockets could easily be used as very effective weapons of war. But while the Americans struggled to perfect their rockets the Russians were steaming ahead and in April 1957 they launched the first ever space satellite Sputnik 1. In November 1957 they launched Sputnik 2, this time carrying the dog Laika into orbit. Unfortunately Laika died in space. The Americans were still testing what were basically intercontinental missiles at this time with more failures than successes. So it came as a great humiliation to them when on April 12th 1961 it was announced that a Russian had become the first man to orbit the Earth. Two cosmonauts were short listed to make the flight, Gherman Titov and Yuri Gagarin. Both men were suited up and taken to the launch tower at Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and it was not until the last minute that Gagarin was selected and Titov was held in reserve. Titov would fly in Vostok-2 later in August. At 7:07 am Gagarin boarded his
Vostok-1 capsule and passed the time singing Russian folk songs to himself. Two hours later at 9:07 everything was ready, there was no 5-4-3-2-1 countdown, just a simple phrase from Gagarin “Let’s go” (in Russian) as the Vostok rocket blasted off into history. The capsule containing Gagarin was a ball shape just over 2 metres in diameter. The flight was completely automatic; he had no way of steering or controlling it. His one orbit lasted 108 minutes and took him north east over the USSR toward Siberia, south over the Pacific to the very tip of Argentina then back across the Atlantic to central Africa and on toward his final landing near Saratova, central Russia. Gagarin did not land inside his capsule but ejected from it and landed by parachute in a farmer’s field. The first people who saw him landing in his bright orange space suit and white helmet were the farmer’s wife and her daughter. They were understandably terrified at the sight of this ‘man from space’ coming toward them until he explained to them who he was. Gagarin was hailed as a national hero and paraded around the world on goodwill visits, his first overseas visit was to England where he met with the Queen. Sadly Yuri Gagarin was killed on March 27th 1968 when the light airplane he was travelling in crashed under very mysterious circumstances; he left a widow and three daughters. Watch out for the ISS this Sunday April 17th coming from the South West at 22.16 and raise a glass to Yuri Gagarin, the first man in Space.

PM’S MINI-BREAK
Charles steps in over wedding snub Wedding guest lists are always fertile ground for dispute – and it now seems that the same is true for Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Adios to Spain as short break ends and PM heads back to work British premier David Cameron was back at work sporting a suit and tie this week after failing to fly the flag for men’s fashion during his short break to southern spain with his wife samantha. Their budget break was their first abroad since Mr Cameron became prime minister and he and his wife left the kids behind and flew to Malaga with Ryanair before heading off to a three star hotel in Granada. The couple were snapped by a fellow traveller looking a bit glum at Stansted airport last Wednesday. The twosome demonstrated that Spain was a great mini-break
choice for soaking up culture and scenery. During their stay they visited the Alhambra, Granada’s Moorish palace, wandered through El Realjo, and were followed by paparazzi as they walked in the Sierra de Huetor natural park on Friday and then relaxed with a beer on the terrace of a tiny café. The Camerons flew back to London late on Friday night
and it looks like the prime minister took the shortness of the break to heart and packed very little in the way of clothing. He wore trainers, jeans and a navy blue polo shirt for most of his trip, but rang the changes for the walk in the natural park by swapping his jeans for navy shorts. Wife Sam, something of a fashion icon these days, was seen wearing on trend maxi dresses. Maybe next
time the couple head off she can persuade the prime minister to leave behind his Jeremy Clarkson jeans in favour of more fashionable chinos and trendy cotton shirts. No 10 said that although the Camerons were followed around by photographers they didn’t mind and enjoyed themselves – a discreet security detail was with them at all times.
It had been assumed that King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia would be accompanied by the Crown Prince and his wife for the royal nuptials at Westminster on April 29th. But now it appears that Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia were left off the list and the Prince of Wales – in Madrid last week at a gala dinner hosted in his honour by the Crown Prince – has stepped in to sort it out. Charles was a guest at the Spanish heir to the throne’s marriage ceremony in 2004, when Felipe married the divorced television news reader Letizia.
Colonques, and his wife Delfina, had been invited – his company had made a substantial contribution to the costs of a lavish charity dinner at Buckingham Palace earlier this year. The company’s UK workforce has been up in arms because it has been told that workers will have to take the wedding day bank holiday as unpaid leave.
Felipe had caused a stir at the gala dinner, held in honour of the Prince of Wales’s first state visit to Spain with his wife Camilla, when he obliquely referred to the future of Gibraltar. The wedding guest list had already raised eyebrows when it was learned that the head of the Spanish ceramic firm Porcelanosa, Manuel
On Friday a St James’s Palace spokesman had apparently confirmed that there were only two invitations to the Spanish royal household, and that it was a decision in Madrid as to who should attend. Later that day however it was being inferred that Prince Charles had asked for Felipe and Letizia to be added.

Famous shoemaker sees red
PReseNTeD BY INDICA
French shoe maker Christian Laboutin is famous amongst fashionistas for the signature red soles on his shoes which are his trademark.
TICkeTs €20
His New York store featured in the opening shot of the first Sex and The City movie and there cannot be many stars in Hollywood who don’t own a pair of the iconic red soled high heels. It’s one of the most recognisable fashion accessories of all time –so much so that Laboutin trademarked the “Red
Sole” feature in 2008. And now it seems that the courts may have to judge whether Laboutin can actually “own” a colour as the shoe maker takes on another French megabrand in the shape of Yves Saint Laurent, which Laboutin feels has unfairly copied his trademark. The Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2011 collection has
featured a pair of red suede shoes with matching red soles, and it’s this that has prompted Laboutin lawyers to take out papers in New York suing YSL. The collection also features purple shoes with matching soles, green shoes with green soles, and navy with navy soles but it’s the red ones that have led to lawyers claiming in legal papers
that they are identical to the Red Sole Mark and will cause “confusion, mistake and deception”. They say there’s no form of flattery better than imitation – and with the Laboutin brand identity so strong, anyone seeing the YSL shoes would have thought they were Laboutins anyway.

Does the Mediterranean diet exist?
CO2 linked to hay fever rise
In Europe and the United States, the so-called Mediterranean diet - rich in olive oil, whole grains, fish, fruits and vegetables and wine - sells billions of dollars worth of food products as well as package trips to Italy, where “enogastronomic tourism” rakes in as much as €5 billion a year. Dozens of studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet lowers rates of heart disease, diabetes and depression, but according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Mediterranean people have some of the worst diets in Europe. Before there was a Mediterranean diet, there was WWII and the food shortages that went along with it. A Swedish study after
the war ended showed that mortality from coronary disease declined in Northern European countries during the war – the result, they said, of wartime restrictions on milk, butter, eggs and meat. At about the same time, an American study, which had been studying the effects of starvation on a group of volunteer subjects, moved on to study the diets of Midwestern businessmen. It found they were more prone to heart disease than were men in war-deprived
Northern Europe. The researchers concluded that saturated fats led to high levels of cholesterol and from there to cardiovascular disease. They then carried out a long-term study in seven countries, including Italy and Greece – and the Mediterranean diet was born. The Mediterranean diet was always a composite. Spaniards love pork; Egyptians, as a rule, do not. In some regions, people

made pesto with lard, not olive oil. Rami Zurayk, an agriculture professor at the American University in Beirut, has said there is no such thing as the Mediterranean diet; there are Mediterranean diets which have some things in common – a lot of fruit and vegetables and less meat. Another thing they have in common is what the Italians called “cucina povera,” the “food of the poor.” You eat lentils instead of meat because you have no choice so the Mediterranean diet has a lot to do with poverty, not geography. The diet the American study invented way back then bore little resemblance to what
Mediterranean peoples actually wanted to eat. Josef Schmidhuber, a senior economist at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has said they wanted a Western diet, which they associated with wealth. Last year, Unesco added the Mediterranean diet to its list of the world’s great intangible cultural treasures that need safeguarding. Today, more than half the populations of Italy, Portugal and Spain are overweight and obesity is growing among the young, who prefer French fries and milkshakes at McDonald's.

Carbon dioxide emissions may be raising pollen counts in European cities, according to a study by researchers from 13 EU nations who analysed pollen levels for more than 20 species of tree and plant. It is generally believed that higher temperatures could be causing plants to produce more pollen but by comparing pollen counts during relatively hotter and relatively cooler years, the researchers found that temperature was not the cause. They also eliminated other possible factors, such as changes in land use. Although more research remains to be done, the team said further rises in pollen counts were likely, given that CO2 concentrations are rising. They said pollen seasons were also getting longer because of the introduction of plants and trees from other continents so the season of suffering for people with hay fever was getting more serious. At a local level, they said urban planners should be more aware of what sort of problems may arise from the urban trees they're planting. For example, they often use birch trees because of their nice silver colour, not aware that they leave allergenic problems behind.
Dr-patient divide A US study has found that many doctors recommend treatments to their patients that they would not use themselves. Nearly 1,000 US physicians were asked to pick treatments for several medical scenarios. When told to imagine themselves as the patient, they usually opted for a therapy carrying a higher chance of death but better odds of side-effect free survival, while for their patients, they tended to pick a treatment that erred on the side of survival, regardless of the quality of life.

A Cultural Melange Some 20,000 people visited the event last year, and this year’s festival promises to be

There could be some confusion between facts and fantasy this week, you may think you know something and yet the reality is completely different. Convincing yourself of something that is not totally true can at times deepen the distance between you and the discovery of some vital content in the scene or the story. Prepare to change direction by the weekend and even though you want to move on like the speed of light, you won’t be able to until necessary adjustments are made. Something in your world needs fixing and most of your thoughts are being to change in order to make something better or taken up with what needs brighter. The more you get in touch with some of those things that you cannot control, the more you may be comparing what is in front of you to a far more The comparing may fuel your emotions as things can feel hot ideal scenario. and heated these days. This week your faith is tested.
You are the centre of attention this week and others are very much aware of your presence. The spotlight is on you and as fast as you can rise up your reputation can also fall, so make sure others do not seek to make an example of you. Any illusions that you may have clung to fall by the wayside - this will help you to see your goal with more clarity. Wealth and prosperity are on their way - just make sure the facts you read or hear about are really true. There is a force of wild fire raging around you and the only way for you to manage this influence is to raise your game. Neptune has just moved into fellow water sign Pisces and this will have the effect of diffusing some of your attachment to certain outcomes, allowing the universe to step in and help. Much of what happens directly depends on how you deal with what is tossed at you. Stop, pause and breathe and give yourself the space you need to respond. This is a time when any form of concealed information is likely to re-surface, all due to Mercury being in a retrograde motion. If there is anything hidden you would be much better off to bring it up yourself and deal with it instead of waiting for the time bomb to go off. Your personal honesty, integrity and honour are on show and you will need to have complete concentration in one area of your life. You are in a good position - just make sure you stop and rest when you need to. A prime time for personal relationships as it is much easier for others to see the feelings and emotions in you that you hide so well at times. Any outlet that uses your creativity and imagination, fun and expression will bring rewards for you. This is a great time for meeting new people, widening your network and social circle, but avoid getting so wrapped up in this energy that you become reckless - it is certainly a time to let your hair down.
LIBRA
Life can feel like one big power play at the moment and your latest moves may have you feeling like someone else has everything in their power to extinguish your plan. Have you considered that you may not actually need this person at all? Perhaps you have the one card that holds the key to it all and without you nothing is possible, perhaps you hold more of the power September 23rd - than you think. You will get a glimpse of when and how to proceed by the nd October 22 weekend when a sudden bolt of intuition hits you.
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
An excessive amount of energy is raging through your chart, making anything and everything get right under your skin. While your instincts are so heightened you will have to work extra hard at diffusing some of those highly strung emotions before you do or say things you will regret. All these emotions may be taking a toll on your body so you would be wise to look after your health. Try to rise above it all and take the high road - you will feel much better if you do.
SAGITTARIUS Knowing when to be serious and when to cut loose and have fun is the key to finding balance this week. The hardest bit to keep in mind is that everything that is happening, whether it appears to be good or bad, is doing so to set you up for an even better future. Something major is on the brink of happening, especially in the form of love and romance. Keep the faith and nd November 22 - when things look like they are getting too serious, go out and have some fun. st December 21
CAPRICORN This week be upfront and honest about what you want and what you expect from others versus what you are willing to give back in return. This course of action will establish a solid base upon which to build from and once you do that there is no stopping you. Learning to rely upon yourself to initiate the changes you desire is the key. This is survival mode and things will go your way December 22nd if you push hard for agreements and are willing to take some extra risks and January 19th chances.
AQUARIUS
January 20th February 18th
PISCES
February 19th March 20th
You have a choice this week, to be flexible and willing to adapt - although I know it is not easy for Aquarians to change course readily and go with the flow - or remain immovable, rigid and dig your heels in. If you go with the first option it could prove an easier journey but then the second option will require you to fight with opposition and confrontations. At least you are forewarned so that you will be prepared to choose the pathway you wish.
This is a monumental week for you, as Neptune your ruling planet, entered your sign and has not been in this place for 164 years. This influence fuels new dreams and ideals that are soon to be born, therefore allow yourself to put some colour to that blank canvas. Not much can faze you when you are centred and balanced; this is when you feel strong and as if you have a grip on your destiny. You are being given a much needed emotional boost of focus and direction.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
As promised last week, here is the Kym’s Kitchen recipe for Lemon Splodge. As I said, this recipe was a bit of an experiment as all I did was bung a few ingredients in a bowl and hope for the best. Everybody who tried it at The News said it was great so I thought I'd share it with you. As it turned out, it’s a cross between a lemon flavoured sponge and a souffle with a lemon sauce at the bottom. You’ll need to turn it round in the oven half-way through cooking to get an even colour on the top but do be very careful not to burn yourself with the water in the roasting tin and turn very gently taking care not to bash the tin and knock out all the air in the mixture. Let me know what you think at editorial@thenewsonline.es

Sebastian Vettel continues to dominate Lewis Hamilton's race was virtually all over, when Nick Heidfeld pulled off an amazing first corner overtake as Sebastian Vettel was escaping away at the front and establishing a two-second advantage by the end of the first lap. Race leader Vettel was reporting a vibration on lap eight, but with the threat of rain still a possibility, all teams were hoping to stretch the opening stint out as long as possible.
As Vettel pulled even further away out front, Heidfeld continued to hold up Hamiton. Button led the second pack of cars, with the two Ferraris all over fifthplaced Petrov.
The rain though never really materialised, and positions continued to change at the front after the 2nd and 3rd pit stops. That man Kobayashi continued to battle throughout the race especially with Schumacher, and the former's overtaking is becoming legendary.
Massa dived up the inside to go fifth at the beginning of lap six, and when the young Russian ran off through Turn 13 heading onto the back straight shortly afterwards, Alonso grabbed his chance.
Alonso homed in on the ailing Hamilton, as the two arch rivals disputed the final podium position. Despite his rear wing not working, Alonso was by far the faster of the pair, and he was soon

As such, if you are the owner of a UK-plated vehicle, it’s important to find out what the current state of your insurance is by either speaking to your insurance broker or by consulting the Motor Insurance Database online at www.askmid.com. Changes in this law are not just set to apply to cars with UK registration plates, but also to vehicles of other European origins as well, so it is highly advisable to speak to your insurance company regarding this matter as soon as possible. Those that have taken out motor policies with
SEAT is celebrating a cluster of impressive sales records – including its best March ever in the UK – as British buyers turn in their droves to the value, quality and sporting style of the Spanish car maker’s models.
Liberty Seguros, the expats’ preferred insurer with the highest number of international clients in Spain, need not worry. Since May 2008, Liberty Seguros has been supplying the UK Authorities (MIB - Motor Insurance Bureau) with detailed information regarding its international client-base.
Department does in fact work closely with the MIB and confirms on its client’s behalf, that valid insurance is in place for questionable vehicles. This allows the policy holder to feel ultimate peace of mind regarding the law in Spain as well as in the UK. And it certainly eliminates the worry.
Effectively, this means that those who do have valid insurance for their UK-registered vehicle here in Spain will have been automatically added to the database with all relevant details such as the name of the policy holder, car registration details and the validity of cover with Liberty Seguros.
However, if you are one of the few that does not have motor cover with Liberty Seguros then it is not only of utmost importance to have valid insurance in place, but to also ensure that your current insurer has taken the necessary precautions to ensure you are staying on the right side of the law.
This is very welcome news to Liberty Seguros policy holders, as all information added to the MIB’s database can be accessed by UK Police who are able to ascertain who does and who does not have insurance at the touch of a button. Thus, there would be no confusion if they were to ever be stopped by the police.

same race two years ago, and this for a driver who only a matter of weeks ago, didn't even have a seat in F1 this season, Petrov in the other Renault wouldn’t have the same fortune as his teammate as with five laps left he carried too much speed into turn eight and didn't turn down that speed as he tried to rejoin over the kerb, took off and landed hard breaking his steering column as he brought the car to a halt on the other side of the track. Webber crowned an impressive fightback with fourth and Massa led Alonso nose-to-tail across the line for fifth and sixth, although the Brazilian would park his car on the slowingdown lap after running out of fuel.
Seat’s best ever March
Staying On The Right Side Of The Law Each year in the UK, some 300,000 drivers are convicted for not having valid insurance and now, drivers of UK-plated cars in Spain, are likely to suffer the same fate. With new laws that are coming into effect this Spring, all vehicles must be registered on the Motor Insurance Database in the United Kingdom – and those that aren’t, are liable to receive a fine, face prosecution, or even have their car seized and destroyed if caught driving back in the UK or if involved in an accident anywhere in Europe.
post-race penalties to both the Spaniard for causing the collision and the Briton for having been deemed to have made more than one change of direction in defending his place. Although the time addition didn't affect Alonso's finishing position, Hamilton drops to eighth behind
Having expertly coped with the lack of KERS and reacting to threats just when he needed to, Vettel weaved across the finish line in celebration of his success, and then enthusiastically declared to his team on his victorious slowing-down lap: “In the heat, we kept our heads cool – I'm loving it!, I'm loving working with you guys”. Jenson Button took an excellent 2nd place just over 3 secs behind at the flag.

the
Masters final round misery for McIlroy it all proved to much for the young Ulsterman as he suffered a back nine meltdown in the sweltering heat of augusta: the writing was on the wall though as early as the first hole where he started with a bogey and for the first time looked edgy. Eight men led the Masters on the final day, but with birdies at all of the final four holes it was South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel who came through it all to take his first major championship, and with it the green jacket. As the roars from the fans reverberated through the pines like never before on Masters Sunday, saluting eagles and birdies by the seven other players who either held or shared the lead, Schwartzel, 26, a slightly built man but with a strong game, came from four strokes off the pace with the day’s low round of 66 for 14-under-par 274. Schwartzel had been given a tip by fellow South African Nick Price for Masters week. “This year, Nick Price gave me a really good tip, so did David Frost,” Schwartzel said. “Nick said when he came over, he used to find the fastest putt on every green and practise that, and

that’s what I did for the last three weeks. Every tournament I went to, I just practised the fastest putt I could find, even though they were only five feet, to learn to hit the putts that softly. It really paid off. I felt so good on these greens this week.” The story though could have been very different if Rory McIlroy hadn’t suffered with his putting. He thought he was holding it together quite well on the front nine and in fact he still led the tournament, albeit by a
Cricket the winner at the Cartama Oval Costa del sol Xi vs. totteridge millhillians Cricket Club The warmest day of the year so far saw the New Cartama Oval welcome the North London touring team for the first of their two weekend matches. Collectively, this was the best bowling performance seen locally for some time.
catches early on and leaving the second half of the batting order to eke out a disappointing total of 128 all out, which was never likely to be enough to win. The highest score was 36 by David Wright, the best haul of wickets was by Rayeez Buhary with 3 for 17.
The conditions were almost idyllic - bright sunshine, warm air, leather on willow with the warble of the beeeaters coming loud and clear over the varied song of the native birds. Perhaps this all overwhelmed the visitors as their early batting gave way much too easily, spooning several easy
The Sunday game however was a much better contest. The Touring side must have had an early night and had been under strict orders of no drinking as they came out with all guns blazing and restricted the home team to 173/7 in their allotted overs. It could have been a lot less as at

slender one stroke. But the 10th hole changed all that as McIlroy’s ball flew left, hit branches and ended up between two cabins left of the tee. Rory proceeded to take a triple bogey seven on the hole. He put it behind him though and drove well down the 11th, the start of Amen Corner, and hit a superb iron shot over the pond protecting the green to within birdie range, but missed the putt and also the one coming back for par. It didn’t get any better on the next hole ‘Golden Bell’, the
infamous 12th, where McIlroy (pictured right) missed three more shortish putts from inside three feet for a double bogey 5. The 13th was next, and a hole where normally McIlroy would be looking to attack for eagle. His drive wasn’t good as he overdid the draw required, caught the trees and ended up in Rae’s Creek - back on the tee McIlroy looked close to tears as he buried his head in his hands, he just wanted to creep away and it was ugly to watch. The two Australians paired together, Adam Scott and Jason Day were having a battle of their own and Scott was the first player to reach 12 under (after Rory’s demise) after a great birdie at the 16th, but he couldn’t do any better on the last two holes. Day though birdied those two holes to tie with Scott, but they were looking over their shoulders as Schwartzel continued to

Totteridge also improved with their batting performance and after a shaky start managed to overtake the home sides total with 6 overs to spare. All in all it was a great weekend of cricket, the Tourists enjoying immensely the after match hospitality. I think we’ll be seeing them again!
After the successful open day on April 2nd, it was decided by popular demand to hold another one! This will take place on Sunday April 24th, starting at around 10.30 and finishing around 3pm. This will be another opportunity for all ages to have a
post the birdies, needing only a par up the last he sank the 25ft putt for birdie and a place in the record books. Tiger Woods had shown well in the final round, getting off to a flyer with four birdies and an eagle in his first eight holes, to get it to 10 under par and an outward nine of just 31 shots. He wasn’t able to capitalise further, as he missed birdie chances on 13 and 16 and an eagle chance on the par 5 15th, where he did manage to birdie. He finished on 10 under for a share of fourth for the second year running. Luke Donald was Britain’s only other real hope of donning the green jacket and played steady all day to also finish on 10 under. After a bit of drama on the eighteenth where, from a horrible stance, he managed to hit the flag but saw his ball rebound off the green, he then proceeded to chip in knockabout. The final word must go to McIlroy: “You know, I’ll have plenty more chances. I know that it’s very disappointing what happened today. Amir Khan’s TV ‘commercial suicide’ The promoter of Amir Khan’s world title challenger has accused the champion’s team of committing ‘commercial suicide’ by switching Saturday night’s fight from Sky Sports to the fringe cable network, Primetime. Eddie Hearn, who manages unbeaten Ulsterman Paul McCloskey, adds that he is ‘cringeing’ at the rationale. Primetime satisfied Khan’s preference for a pay-TV transmission for £14.95 when Sky insisted on moving the event from Sky Box Office to one of their regular channels.

Malaga 0 - 0 Deportivo La Coruna On a scorching hot Sunday afternoon the Malaga faithfull turned up in their thousands as always hoping for the all important three points. The game began slowly as the heat seemed to affect both sets of players. Jesus Gamez was the first player to unsuccessfully try his luck on goal, shooting from 25 yards wide in only the third minute. Rondon then went close with a header, and then on

Before the whistle went for halftime Deportivo were down to 10 men after Laure was shown his second yellow card of the game after a foul on Seba.
