High Court U Turn - National News
Hunt for freed ETA terrorist after U turn The ongoing political row over the High Court's decision to release ETA terrorist Antonio Troitiño six years before the end of his jail sentence has put the 11-year-old antiterrorism pact between the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular in jeopardy. Troitiño, who had been sentenced to 2,232 years in jail for 22 killings in the 1980s, was released last week by the High Court in a decision that caused a storm of controversy. The court reviewed and reversed its decision after an appeal against the release by the public prosecutor’s office, and issued a warrant for his rearrest. But Troitiño was not under surveillance and has disappeared. He was believed to have headed for France but it was later
admitted that he could already be in South America, specifically Venezuela, where many ETA members have found refuge. The row deepened when it was revealed that the Supreme Court had separately rejected in late March a petition for Troitiño's early release, but its decision was only made public two weeks later, just after the High Court panel had agreed to free him. The political fallout has led the PP to demand an

The Socialist government responded by accusing the PP of using the affair as an electoral weapon, in contravention of the Anti-Terrorist Pact signed by both parties in December 2000. ICKHAM’S
What a lot to say this week
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
So.... what a chocolate weekend for everyone! Easter has to be one of those times when the diet (what diet?!) goes out the window and we can all bathe in chocolate. The weather has been up and down and nobody knows just what to wear so I’m now plumping for layers with T-Shirts at the bottom and fleeces and a raincoat on top so that if it’s raining I’m OK but, if the sun comes out, I’m covered too. I’ll just need a trolley to carry all the stuff I have to take off. And the floors! Absolutely covered in filth again from my shoes after walking the dogs in the campo in the rain and there are cat paw prints everywhere again. Of course, it’s all my fault as we polished the car and it always does this when we clean it. I thought I was going to have a quiet weekend but, no chance – mop and bucket time again. This Friday is the Royal Wedding so I hope you’ve all got your outfits and bunting ready for the street parties that will be going on. If not, Woody’s, The Irish Card and Party Store, Precious Moments, and most of the good card shops have them in stock so there’s no excuse for not having a good time. last but not least, can somebody please tell me why people have to write nasty vindictive stuff on Facebook? A good friend of mine has recently had some very unpleasant comments posted on their page and the only thing I can think of is that the people who wrote them must be very bored to find the time for such nastiness. I was told as a child: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t open your mouth”. You know who you are and apologies would be good!

Easter for decades Religious brotherhoods and crowds of disappointed spectators wept openly most of last week as the heavens kept up a steady downpour in nearly all parts of the country, making it impossible for the religious floats to leave the safety of their respective churches.
It was the wettest Easter week for decades and Seville was particularly badly hit on Maundy Thursday when the Madrugá (the midnight and early morning) processions had to be cancelled. The last time this happened was in 1933, though then it was for
political rather than meteorological reasons Something similar happened in Leon, where this Easter Friday's Procession of the Steps was cancelled for the first time since 1936, when the then anarchic political situation persuaded the religious brotherhood to
keep St John and the Dolorosa Virgin safe in their churches. Throughout the country processions were suspended or followed vastly shortened routes. In Cuenca one the processions was abandoned mid-route when the heavens opened.
Spain failed over party financing transparency In its latest report, the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) gave Spain a fail grade for a lack of transparency when it comes to the financing of political parties. It said Spain had not complied with any of the six recommendations it made two years ago, including having more transparency at the local level and in the area of bank loans to parties. The GRECO report noted bad practices at the local level, especially in towns of more than 20,000 inhabitants, "where risks of corruption are particularly high given the important volume of economic operations performed at local level, e.g. procurement and
licensing procedures, and urban planning." The report was also very critical of bank loans to parties and party indebtedness which in 2005 amounted to €144 million. It said that in Spain, "loans are an important source of political financing, which do not fall under the thresholds on contributions from individual donors. In this connection, GRECO has repeatedly stressed that loans granted under particularly advantageous
WEATHER WEATHER
or preferential terms deviating from general market conditions, as well as written-off loans which are not reimbursed, do in fact amount to donations." The report also noted that its previous recommendation to establish a common accounting format to make the parties' financial reports comparable had only produced a draft accounting framework that is still in the preparatory stage.
In Toledo older people told news reporters that they had never seen scenes like it in their lifetime after the city was covered in a white blanket following a storm of hailstones. On the roads 39 people died during Holy Week, five fewer than in 2010.
Rumanians get own party The small town of Villamanrique de Tajo (pop 700) outside Madrid is the home of the first ever all-Rumanian party in Spain. Founded by Florin Bojor just over a month ago, Rumanians living there will be able to vote for the Iberian party of Rumanians (Pirum) in the May 22nd local elections. George Fecior, an immigrant who has lived in Villamanrique for ten years is the party's local representative and freely acknowledges that the party probably won't get enough votes for a seat on the local council. “But it's a start,” he told reporters, “and we'll be more and better prepared for the next elections in four years time.”

The right-wing public sector workers union Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) added to the tension on Monday – when it asked the General Council of the Judiciary to take disciplinary action against the three judges who released Troitiño. However, on Tuesday the tension was slightly eased by the PP's Justice and Public Liberties coordinator, Federico Trillo, who said during a radio interview that his party had reached an agreement with the government to challenge the local elections lists of the left-wing Basque coalition of Bildu. According to a report by intelligence services, Bildu is another disguise for the banned Batasuna Party, ETA's political wing.
Dolores de Cospedal said the pact is now “in danger” if the government does not change its attitude

King stresses importance of Emir's visit In a rare break with protocol, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia went to the airport to meet the Emir of Qatar, Hamad Bin Jalifa al Thani, and his wife, Moza Bint Nasser, at the start of their official two-day visit on Monday. The 100-strong guest list for the gala dinner hosted by the royal family that evening also underlined the importance being given to the emir's visit to Spain. In addition to the Prime Minister and other members of the government, it also included Sandro Rosells, the chairman of Barcelona FC which sponsors the Qatar Foundation, actor Antonio Banderas and his

Catalonia to cut public workers The Catalan regional government will reduce the number of public sector workers by 5 per cent and salaries by 6 per cent in June, mainly by not filling empty positions and introducing reduced working hours. However, a spokesman did not deny that the cuts could involve about 1,000 dismissals of manual workers or temporary workers, but only as a last resort. Catalonia's 253 public companies employ just over 35,000 people, which does not include those working in foundations or consortia related to the regional government.
“qualitative jump in the economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries”. He also called for “reciprocal investments and business ventures that would benefit our peoples”. The visit comes as Spain is floundering in the most serious economic crisis in recent history while Qatar has become one of the richest countries in the world thanks to its gas
reserves, the third largest in the world. It is one of the few Arab countries where there have been no protests or demands for democracy, largely due to the Emir's modernisation of the country. He stopped being an absolute monarch in 2005 when he drew up a constitution which was approved by a referendum, giving equal rights to men and women.

According to right-wing paper La Razon, the prime minister s decision not to run again has made no difference – in fact the Partido Popular has widened its advantage to more than 14 percentage points over the Socialist Party. Not so, says Publico, founded by the Socialist Party – his decision narrowed the gap to 2.3 per cent – down from around 12 per cent.

Naked workouts on offer
“Gold is no longer a profitable investment,” said then economic minister Pedro Solbes in 2007 to justify the Bank of Spain's selling off more than 32 per cent of its gold reserves.
A gym in Arrigorriaga in the Basque region has found a novel way to battle the economic crisis - offering naked workouts for nudists. Easy Gym owner Merche Laseca did a bit of research before making the gym the first of its kind to do so. She found out that two local swimming pools were already offering monthly sessions for
bathing in the nude, and that there was a mass naked run along the sands every year in nearby Sopelana, not to mention at 12 naturist beaches in the Basque region. Not a nudist herself, Ms Laseca said she had to do
something because fewer people were using the gym. Her mind was made up when a poll of members of the Basque Naturist Association, who attended a trial run of the naked gym last week, showed 90
per cent would support a facility offering the full range of nude workouts. From next month, the gym will operate every Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday exclusively for nudists.

last August when the police arrested a Rumanian who was falsifying car documents. He led them to other members of the gang and a series of raids in Madrid and surrounding towns
produced bank account details and material for falsifying documents. The “sellers” offered the cars cheaply, saying they had to leave the country for work purposes and could not take the cars with them.
At the time, gold was selling for $669 an ounce – at the close of last week, it was selling for $1,508, and rising. The 4.3 million ounces of gold the Bank sold in 2007 for $2,867 million (€2,108 million at the exchange rate then) are now valued at $6,471 million (€4,460 million). The Bank of Spain
has sold 46 per cent of its gold reserves since Spain went over to the euro in 2000 – the largest amount of gold to leave the country since the Republican government sent around two thirds of its gold reserves to Moscow for “safekeeping” during the Civil War.
Spain's forests grow Spain is the European country which has most increased the land area covered by forests in recent years, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Another recent report by
the environment ministry on fire damage to forests found that 85 per cent of the trees were healthy and that the number of hectares destroyed by fire in 2010 had dropped 63 per cent over the previous year.

Court rules 50-50 mortgage repayments
Photojournalist calls from Libya jail Photojournalist Manu Brabo, who was detained by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi along with three other four journalists on April 5th while reporting from the outskirts of Brega, telephoned his parents on Saturday from a military prison in Tripoli. His father, Manuel Varela, told TVE, his son had said he was "in fairly good shape". Sr Varela told Cadena Ser radio that his son had said they were arrested for “entering Libya illegally and taking photographs without
permission”. Mr Brabo told his parents did not know when he might be released. Sr Varela said he had asked him if he had been ill-treated or had any problem “and he said no, that he was in a military prison where there were other journalists and they were talking and giving encouragement to each other." Sr Varela added: "He was also being well-fed." The other three who were detained with him were James Foley and Clare Morgana Gillis, both Americans, and Anton
Hammerl, a South African. Ms Gillis had called her parents in Connecticut last Thursday and told them she was being held with Brabo and Foley, but said Hammerl had not been with them when they were detained.
The Supreme Court has ruled that a mortgage acquired by a couple to a buy a home must be repaid in equal shares by both parties in the event of a divorce. The ground-breaking ruling was made in favour of a man who had been told by the Provincial Court of Valencia that he had to pay 80 per cent of the mortgage because it was part of his alimony payment. The Supreme Court differed, and ruled that payments on a loan entered into by both spouses fall under the joint responsibilities of the community property system, which makes both parties equally liable, regardless of income.

Drug seizures up and down A report from the Secretary of State for Security indicates that the economic crisis is also affecting the illegal drug market. Seizures of heroine and hashish have dropped, although cocaine seizures have remained steady. However, police seized twice as many amphetamine pills last year as they did in 2009. The number of raids carried out by the police and Guardia Civil also dropped by 7 per cent as did the number of arrests – 17,878 – the lowest for four years.

Tourists saved with US help Syrian tanks have moved into Daraa, opening fire on civilians.
The US ordered a partial evacuation of its Damascus embassy on Monday and urged all Americans to defer all travel to Syria, advising those in the country to leave while commercial transport was available. The State Department said some non-essential embassy staff and all dependants would be leaving. Foreign Secretary William Hague has also urged Britons to leave due to the “rapid deterioration” in the security situation. Earlier, the Obama administration said it was considering sanctions to put pressure on the government of President Bashar al-Assad to stop its crackdown. The steps could include a freeze on
the assets of Syrian leaders and a ban on business dealings in the US. According to a UN Security Council diplomat, the UK and other European states are circulating a draft statement condemning the violence in Syria. Meanwhile the Syrian government said in a statement troops sent to quell unrest had "restored tranquillity". The statement, carried by the official news agency, said the government had sent
troops to several cities on the request of citizens who were worried about "armed extremists". Arrests were made and those people would be processed through the courts. Reporters in in neighbouring Lebanon, said communication with Syria was virtually impossible, but the government seemed to be in control. On Monday witnesses said the army had advanced into the southern city of
Deraa, using tanks to support troops. Security forces also reportedly opened fire in a suburb of Damascus. There have been numerous reports of crackdowns and arrests around Syria over recent days, despite the lifting of an emergency law last week. Activists have said more than 350 people have been killed in the violence since mid-March. Syria is a one-party state with a record of extreme repression.
Ash air shutdown the 'right' decision Concerns about aircraft safety during the eruption of an Icelandic volcano in 2010 were well founded, according to a new scientific study by researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. Ash particles from the early phase of the eruption were small and abundant and particularly sharp and abrasive, posing a potential threat to aircraft flying through the cloud. They could have melted inside jet engines, potentially causing them
to fail mid-flight, the researchers said. The outpouring of ash from Eyjafjallajokull caused the largest closure of European airspace since World War II, with losses estimated at between €1.5bn and €2.5bn. Some 10 million travellers were
affected. In 1982, a British Airways 747 flew through an ash cloud during the eruption of Mount Galunggung in Indonesia. The ash sandblasted all the surfaces of the aircraft and caused all four jet engines to cut out when the melted ash coated their interior.
Luckily for the 263 passengers and crew, the pilot was able to re-start three of the engines after they cooled during descent. He was able to land by peering through a 2-inch strip on the side window that had avoided sandblasting.
Rescuers were able to save two tourists who got into trouble on an Andean mountain after they raised the alarm by calling an emergency number in the US. The two - an Italian and a Czech - used a satellite device to send their location to a
rescue centre in Texas. The Americans then alerted the Chilean authorities, and a rescue team was despatched to the area, near the resort town of Pucon. The area, near the Argentine border, is popular with adventure tourists.

Protestants arrested At least 20 Protestants were arrested as they tried to gather for an Easter service in Beijing on Sunday. The worshippers, from the Shouwang church, were trying to hold an outdoor service because they own no premises. In recent weeks, the police have arrested dozens of people from the church, which has about 1,000 members. There are an estimated 70 million Christians in the country, about 20 million of whom attend government-approved churches. The rest worship with unregistered groups known as "house" churches. A female flight attendant was slightly injured as the man was subdued. The suspect, reportedly a member of the Kazakhstan delegation at Unesco in Paris, was handed over to police and arrested after flight AZ329 with 131 people on board landed at Rome's Fiumicino airport on Sunday evening.

Protests on eve of Chernobyl Thousands of people in France and Germany staged protests calling for an end to nuclear power on Monday, the eve of the 25th anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in Ukraine. One of the main protests took place over the Pont de l'Europe, linking France and Germany over the Rhine between Strasbourg and Kehl. People waved banners with anti-nuclear slogans and chanted: "Chernobyl, Fukushima, never again!" Japan is currently still struggling to contain radiation at the Fukushima power plant damaged by the
earthquake and tsunami. On April 26th 1986, the power station at Chernobyl, then part of the Soviet Union, exploded in the world's worst nuclear accident, sending a plume of radiation over a large part of Europe. At least 30 people were killed in the immediate aftermath of the explosion
and others died later from radiation-related sicknesses such as cancer. The exact number is still being debated. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in Ukraine, western Russia and Belarus after the accident, and there is still a 30km exclusion zone around the plant.

Wehrmacht, especially in the final days of World War II, and are still considered cowards and traitors by some Austrians. Since the 1980s Austria has taken a series of steps acknowledging the role its citizens played in Nazi atrocities.

Tight security for wedding Strict security measures have been put in place in London in preparation for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of wellwishers expected to flock to the city for Friday’s Royal Wedding. But security chiefs have warned that elsewhere a terrorist attack on the day of the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton cannot be ruled out. The government is bracing itself for attacks after being warned that Irish
republican groups could be plotting disruption in Belfast and Londonderry, designed to cast a shadow over the event. The threat was apparently revealed in a briefing from MI5 to the
Home Office. Police Constable Ronan Kerr, 25, was killed in an explosion near his home in Omagh earlier this month, and last week a group calling itself “the IRA” claimed responsibility for the murder.
Tragic death sparks investigation An 11-year-old boy, Bailey Lonsdale from Blackpool died on Easter Sunday when he fell from a zip wire ride at a theme park.

ree arrested after bodies discovered Three men have been arrested following the discovery on Good Friday of the bodies of an elderly couple found dead in their home in Wolverhampton. Giuseppe Massaro, 80, and his wife Caterina, 77, were discovered by their granddaughter on Friday evening. Their terraced home in Woden Road, where they had lived for more than 50 years after leaving Italy, had been ransacked. A post-mortem was carried out on their bodies on Monday and police confirmed that two men, aged 31 and 32, from Wolverhampton, and a third man, aged 30, from
Birmingham, were being interviewed by detectives at separate police stations in the West Midlands. Police have appealed for information and are keen to hear from anyone who may have been offered the chance to buy the elderly couple’s black Peugeot 307, which was later recovered in Wednesbury, or who were offered a television. The grief stricken family said that their beloved grandparents would be sadly missed.
The ride, called the SwampFlyer, had only been opened on Monday of last week at GreenWood Forest Park in Snowdonia. Rising to 30 feet at its highest point, the ride is 475 metres long, and requires visitors to launch themselves off a cliff in the wild wood, through tree tops and over the swamp. After the boy fell he was airlifted to hospital where he later died. Park operations manager Steve Williams said that the safety kit had been checked at 10 am on the morning of the accident, in line with the park’s safety procedures, and all had been in order. The park was closed on Monday as a mark of respect and a statement on the website extended sympathy to the family and reiterated that safety was a number one priority. North Wales Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched a joint investigation into the tragedy.

PM under Clegg cosh Open warfare has broken out as the Coalition government creaks under the strain of accusations by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg that David Cameron is “defending the indefensible” by opposing the Alternative Vote. Mr Clegg said in an interview at the weekend that the No to AV campaign in the run up to the referendum was based on “lies, misinformation and deceit.” In his attack he said that the prime minister was aligning himself to “reactionary interests” like
the British National Front and the Communist Party. His comments underscore the political tensions surrounding the national referendum on May 5th. Mr Clegg accused the Tories of being part of an “old elite” determined to maintain “this nice little
racket” which allowed them to “waft into power” without a true majority. Political observers believe that the attack stems from criticism levelled at Mr Clegg by his own party members that he is too cosy with the prime minister.
Facebook rant costs wedding day job A Buckingham Palace Guard has been banned from taking part in the Royal Wedding parade after calling Kate Middleton a “stuck up cow” on his Facebook page. Scots Guardsman Cameron Reilly, aged 18, also posted racist and anti-Semitic messages and claimed to have “attacked a black man” while on leave in East Kilbride, near Glasgow. His abusive rants have cost him his place among several hundred Scots Guards involved in the
wedding celebrations this coming Friday. They will be lining the route of the procession for the newly weds from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace. Reilly, who joined the army last year, is one of the soldiers who patrols outside Buckingham Palace wearing the red tunic and bearskin uniform loved by
tourists. His Facebook profile page includes a photograph of him in combat fatigues and beret holding two rifles, and his complaint that bride-to-be Kate had ignored him as she was driven through the Palace gates. A Scots Guards spokesman said an enquiry was under way.
The handbag was beloved of cartoonists, who used it to illustrate the way Mrs Thatcher kept her Cabinet in line. She would place it on the Cabinet table and on one occasion a Cabinet colleague remarked that, even though the PM was not in the room, the handbag was on the table so maybe the meeting could begin. The black Asprey was included
in the portrait of Mrs Thatcher that now hangs in her old study at No 10 Downing Street, and the word “handbagging” has entered into the Oxford English Dictionary.
Bagging the cash for charity Margaret Thatcher’s famous black Asprey handbag, a symbol of the former prime minister’s authority, is to go under the hammer and is expected to raise £100,000 for a good cause to be chosen by the one time Iron Lady. Mrs Thatcher was often reported as delivering a “handbagging” as she fought Britain’s corner in European Union meetings, and her favourite bag – the Asprey – was pictured on her arm many times as she met world leaders like Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.
The bag will go on sale at Christie’s on June 27th, and will feature among other celebrity items, including an Andy Warhol drawing of Princess Diana.

Even the landscape is a vision in red, with only a few splashes of greenery to indicate that it is still a part
of Mother Earth. One piece of kit being tested is a spacesuit simulator called Aouda.X, specially designed to protect any astronaut inside from the hostile Martian conditions. Freezing temperatures, a noxious atmosphere and being bombarded with deadly radiation are just some of the dangers any humans on Mars would have to contend with, and

Rio Tinto in Huelva province is a former mining area with an unusual chemical and geological make up that makes it surprisingly similar to the Red Planet, which is why it is the ideal place to test out new technology that could one day take man to Mars. Field trials leader Professor Gernot Groemer, who is based at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, said it has a mineral called jarosite “which is exactly what we have on Mars." The professor, from the Austrian Space Forum, added: "This is Mars in Europe."

The Socialist Party of Ecija (Sevilla), which has governed the town since 2003, has apologised for messages posted on its Twitter page by people it now claims have no connection with the party. The comments referred to the possible involvement of former Junta de Andalucia leader Manuel Chaves in
the scandal involving subsidies to companies to help them give early retirement to workers, known as ERE. One said “What does it matter if he coja 4 perras (lined his pockets), he has worked for the good of Andalucia. What matters is corruption in the Partido Popular.” In response to an indignant
critic of the message, the posters then said that something like the ERE “could happen in the best families” and “what matters to us Spaniards is that (former PM) Aznar is proGaddafi”. The Ecija Socialist Party has now closed its Twitter page.

ELECTION WATCH
Mijas
A candidate aiming to 'change for the better' Angel Nozal, the Partido Popular's candidate for mayor of Mijas in the May 22nd municipal elections, must be one of the few party members with a radical trade union background. He told The News that before he joined the Alianza Popular – the forerunner of the PP – in 1982, he had been a member of the Workers Commissions (CC.OO), the trade union founded in the 1950s by the Communist Party in exile to fight the Franco dictatorship. “The AP was a centre-right party, and I wanted to see if the Right really was the ‘bogeyman’ the Left made it out to be,” he said. At the time, the AP was in the process of being formed by people who were nearly all under 40 – he was 27. The AP eventually evolved into the PP, and Angel Nozal with it. “At 57, they look upon me as belonging to the third age,” he said, “because our members are all pretty young, like the AP all those years ago.” He added: “Some of the more conservative members of the the Mijas PP think I belong to the progressive wing of the party”, smiling because only the Left describes itself as progressive in Spain today. Perhaps the adjective fits him, because he would like to “re-found” Mijas. “The town is like a desert at night,” he said. “We have to recover the town's essential Moorish-Andalucian character which is what made it such an attractive town in the first place.” He wants to get rid of all the eyesores – “the adverts, the cables, the plastic tables and cases full of empty bottles outside bars, workers and waiters dressed any old how, everything that makes Mijas uninviting.” He also wants to restore the burrotaxis to their former glory. “Now they charge €10 for a trip that doesn't even take in any of the town's old streets.”
He pointed out that Mijas has a sierra, countryside and sea “but it doesn't have a port, or a promenade, or an amusement park, or a sports ground.” He also refected that its inhabitants once had the highest per capita income in Spain: “Where has all that money gone?” “People say they want change, because the same people have been in power too long and have become complacent,” he said.

“Andalucia is the region with the most potential in Europe but we're the last in education which is the basis of all economic activity and employment,” Nozal said. “That's just one of the more important of many things that have to be changed here.” If the voters give him the chance he would try to make those changes, he said.

In these rural areas, heavy rainfall regularly damages roads, crops and houses and the object of the plan is to improve the economy in those areas and make them safer for their residents. There were no lifeguards on the beaches Easter week because the local council could not afford to pay insurance for them, or to provide them with the medical supplies and vehicles needed for the volunteers to be able to do the job properly. It was the first time since the Easter week safety programme began 10 years ago that the usual 16 volunteers from Proteccion Civil – 13 lifeguards, one driver, a communications man and the person in charge – did not appear on the beach.

Shops may open for cruise ships The city council hopes that the increase in cruise ship visits will convince some 50 store owners in the old part of the city to open their doors from 9 am to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays. A spokesman said they hoped beauty salons would be among them “because those services are expensive on board the ships”. But not just any store can open – they have to be less than 300m2 in size, offer quality products and not belong to a franchise.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Secret pasts
E
ver since Zapatero first mentioned that his maternal grandfather – an army captain who was shot for staying loyal to the Republican government when he fell into the hands of the other side shortly after the civil war started – I’ve dreamed of digging up the past of all prominent Socialists to see just how many are free of the “taint of Franco”. It would be a daunting task, not made any easier by their reticence to talk about what their daddies and granddaddies did during the war – probably because so many of them fought on Franco’s side, as we shall see, thanks to the ABC newspaper, which has started publishing a series of articles on the immediate ancestors of some prominent politicians.
W
hat Zapatero doesn’t mention is that his grandfather, Capt Juan Rodriguez Lozano, took part in the repression of the Asturian miners strike in October 1934, which had been organised by the Socialist Party and its trade union, the UGT. He was under the orders of none other than Franco himself who had been sent by the then rightwing Republican government to settle the matter – which he did quite savagely. (There were three different governments during the Second Republic – classified as reformist, reactionary and revolutionary.)
C
apt Rodriguez Lozano can’t be faulted because he was merely following orders and, like thousands of members of the Republican armed forces, would end up dying on a battlefield or up against a wall. The one at fault is Zapatero for not recognising the reality of those times, when hundreds of thousands of people were caught on the “wrong side”, and either kept their mouths shut in order to survive or tried to get across to what they felt was the “right side”.
B
ut the one who comes out worst in the ABC articles is former Junta de Andalucia premier Manuel Chaves. He told a Socialist rally at Dos Hermanos (Sevilla province) on February 24th 2008, just before the general election: “We have to win, because we owe it to our fathers and grandfathers who suffered under the Franco regime.”
H
is father, Antonio Chaves Plá, didn’t suffer at all – an Army man who fought on Franco’s side in the war, he first appeared in the press in 1966 when, with the rank of Lt Col, he organised a military parade in Seville to commemorate Franco’s victory in the civil war. A month after he was promoted to colonel in 1973, he was awarded the Cross of the Military Order of Merit, and had an audience with Franco himself in early 1975, just months before the dictator died.
Sloppy jurists
O
pposition leader Mariano Rajoy rarely mentions his grandfather in public but perhaps it’s about time he started to do so. Whenever there is an election in the offing, the Socialists trot out the old accusation that the Partido Popular is the true heir of the Franco regime. When the civil war broke out, Galicia was on Franco’s side. Both Franco and Rajoy’s grandfather were Gallegos (Galicians) with the difference that Franco was a Spanish nationalist who despised regional nationalists and Enrique Rajoy Leloup, a Galician nationalist, had been one of the three lawyers who drew up Galicia’s Autonomy (decentralisation) Statute in 1932, when the Republican government gave similar statutes to the Basque Country and Catalonia. As a result, Sr Rajoy Leloup lost his post as professor of civil law at the University of Santiago de Compostela after the civil war broke out and was not re-instated until 1952. While he was not persecuted for his Republican past, he was simply ignored by the Franco regime.
A novel dirty trick Leire Pajin
T
he El Mundo newspaper has come up with an online Derby consisting of seven races – so far – to pick Zapatero’s successors, in which readers can vote for their favourite candidate. I’ve been keeping an eye on it (and voting for Speaker José Bono) and was not surprised to see that interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba and defence minister Carmé Chacon come first and second respectively in the first four races. Then suddenly in the fifth race, health minister Leire Pajin was way out front, with 9,511 votes to Rubalcaba’s 3,166 and Chacon’s 2,858, and she’s still leading the field.
I
f the Socialists want to win the 2012 general election then she’s the last person they need to take over from Zapatero. In a survey a few months back, she was the second most hated public personality in Spain – and quite rightly so. She’s unbearably smug and brash and causes more hackles than mine to rise. So what the devil were those voters thinking of, I asked myself.
T
hen the penny dropped. Of course, Partido Popular militants are voting for her in an effort to convince the Socialists that she’s so popular she should take over from Zapatero, knowing damn well that if she does, the PP will win the general election hands down. Very neat.
S
o who is going to get the blame for the biggest court blunder in recent times that resulted in the early release of a blood-thirsty ETA terrorist with 22 murders chalked up to his name? The opposition and victims’ groups are screaming for scalps, and with good reason. On April 13th, Antonio Troitiño Arranz, 53, (pictured below) walked out of a Huelva prison after a three-judge panel on the High Court sided with his lawyers and gave him generous credit for all the time he spent in preventive custody on numerous offences. This allowed him to shave off six years from the 30-year sentence he was supposed to complete by law. Troitiño vanished before the High Court, realising its own gaffe, issued an international arrest warrant for him. Can you imagine if this were to occur in Britain with Ian Brady or in California with Charles Manson?
I
n 1986, Troitiño, then 27, set off a car bomb at a busy square in Madrid that killed 12 Civil Guard officers passing by in a bus. Another 58 people were injured in what has been billed as ETA’s most sinister attack ever in the Spanish capital. He was part of a dangerous ETA commando unit that besieged the streets of Madrid during the perilous eighties. After Troitiño was captured the following year, the authorities pinned 10 more killings on him, including the murder of Vice Admiral Fausto Escrigas. He was given the statutory 2,232-year sentence, but under Spanish law, the maximum anyone can serve is 30 years in jail. There is no such thing as life in prison in Spain but maybe, after this latest débâcle, it is now time to rethink allowing perpetual terms for crazed criminals by initiating a public debate on new sentencing guidelines. And here are the reasons.
I
n 2008, the Constitutional Court handed down a controversial ruling which, through a loophole, allowed many of the country’s most violent criminals serving the 30-year-max for accumulated crimes to trim the number of months or years from their entire sentence by allowing them to earn credit from all the collected days spent in preventive custody. In effect, inmates who were facing trial for one offence and rearrested, while in jail, for a second offence had two preventive custody periods overlapping. They could add them together and subtract the time from their 30-year maximum sentence. The new sentencing policy sent shock waves through the Attorney General’s Office. Dozens of drug traffickers, murderers and ETA terrorists could now begin to start thinking about their future out on the streets.
E
arly last year, the four sectional courtrooms that make up the High Court met to discuss how to go about implementing the time-servedcredit ranges for inmates. After much
debate, it was decided by three of the four courtrooms in the criminal division that time served in preventive custody would be taken off from the total of the statutory sentences handed down, but not from the 30-year legal limit term. For some unclear reason, the third courtroom, presided by Judge Alfonso Guevara, was not in agreement. Appalled and concerned by all the disagreements regarding the 2008 ruling, the Socialist government amended the Penal Code late last year to prevent convicts from obtaining an easy early release.
T
hen, to make matters more confusing, the Supreme Court, ruling in two other cases regarding ETA members last month, clarified that time in preventive custody corresponds to the offence charged and can only be used to shave off the statutory term handed down in that particular conviction. In other words, the top court decided that if a suspect spent 18 months in custody before trial, those 18 months would only be valid as credit for that conviction and cannot be used in creative calculations or combinations to get time off for other sentences.
S N
till, the original 2008 interpretation of the law was applied to Troitiño.
ow the shocker. Before the High Court's decision, the Supreme Court had rejected Troitiño’s petition for early release on March 28th. The High Court panel said it was never informed of the ruling when it decided to free him 15 days later. In other words, judges who lunch and socialise and speak and gossip frequently amongst themselves, like in any other profession, never shared in two weeks what was going on in each other’s courtrooms. So who is going to be blamed for this embarrassing but dangerous bonehead play? We can just hope that that is all it is – a flub-up – and not a cunning move designed by ETA.

It is hoped that both passengers and crew on these ships will stay on shore longer in the future thereby giving a boost to the revenue of local shops, pubs and outlets and allow the cruise ships to offer more tours to their passengers. Deputy Chief Minister Joe Holliday discussed the plans with cruise companies at a recent convention and they have said they will incorporate the new hours into their 2012 schedules.

A Guardia Civil patrol boat and a customs vessel laid chase to suspected drug smugglers on Easter Sunday. The suspect vessel fled from the Straits of Gibraltar and was pursued into the Bay of Gibraltar. There the pursuing police and customs vessels were joined by boats from the Royal Gibraltar Police
(RGP) and the Guardia patrol boat was in a collision with a boat from the RGP. Minor damage was caused and no-one was injured. The suspect vessel was allegedly carying bales of hashish. The vessel and its crew were escorted by the Guardia Civil into the port at Algeciras. Later the
Guardia Civil union accused Gibraltar of acting like “pirates” and made a formal complaint, claiming its officers were subjected to “serious insults, harassment and threats.” At time of going to press a spokesman for the RGP confirmed the incident and said inquiries were under way.

BY KENNETH BRANAGH Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins
Hurrah for the arrival of the first of the summer blockbusters – and while it may be absolute nonsense there’s no doubt that it will be great fun for cinema audiences starved of action and glamour. Director Kenneth Branagh is, of course, most noted as a thesp and director who “does” Shakespeare and, more recently TV drama in the shape of brooding Nordic detectives. So Marvel Comic hero Thor doesn’t sound like it would be up his street – except if you strip it down to warring family members, pride and vanity, then it demonstrates that Shakespearean plots work in more or less every arena. Our hero Thor (played by former Home
and Away star Hemsworth, sporting a six pack to be proud of) crash lands on Earth, in the New Mexico desert, where he is discovered by astronomer Jane Foster (Portman, ringing the acting changes yet again) and two colleagues. One of them ponders on how the stranger got to be there – and that’s the cue for the movie to nip back in time to show Thor and his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) waging war on the Forest
Giants of Jotumheim. All this war mongering angers Thor’s father Odin (Hopkins) who banishes Thor from the Kingdom of Asgard and dispatches him to Midgard (Earth) in an effort to teach him that pride and vanity stand in the way of common sense. In the process he strips his son of his super powers and his mighty hammer. Meanwhile, with Thor out of the way Loki, in typical Shakespearean villain mode, decides to keep it

that way on a permanent basis, as well as taking the opportunity to do away with his dad. Thor is like a fish out of water on Earth – no hammer, no special powers – just what is a boy to do. Anyway, guess what, Thor is finally reunited with his hammer, so let battle commence. It might be daft but it should do a lot of box office business for Marvel Studios and more than makes up for Iron Man 2, the last disappointing offering from the studio.

erence Stamp is the kind of actor you notice in films. He has a very distinct face and a voice that instantly identifies him, regardless of the character he´s portraying. That´s not to say that he plays the same character every time, far from it but rather that you see the actor through the role he is playing, like recognising someone on the other side of a stained glass window.
B
eing a prolific film actor, the cry often goes up in our house “Oh look, it’s Terence Stamp!” but occasionally I come across a film I´d previously seen and never realised he was among the cast. The reason for this is that I didn´t know who he was until the early nineties when he stole the show as the post-op transsexual Bernadette in the Australian comedy classic Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Keen to find out more about the man behind the sequins and slap, a quick internet search showed that I’d been watching him for years without ever knowing his name. I was especially surprised when I found out that he played the lead in the film adaptation of John Fowles book, The Collector, a film that I had watched and loved years ago, just after I had read the book.
R Jeremy Renner moved on from last year’s Oscar winner The Hurt Locker to take a role in franchise hit Mission Impossible by appearing in MI: The Ghost Protocol alongside Tom Cruise. Now Renner looks like taking the starring role in another hit franchise. Universal Pictures have cast him in the lead role in The Bourne Legacy – the fourth in the series which has starred Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. But Renner will not be reprising the
Damon role. The new movie will be a spin-off about a new secret operative who comes from an even more dangerous covert government programme than the brainwashing programme that produced Bourne. The film will be directed by Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) who also wrote the screenplay. Gilroy also wrote or co-wrote the three previous movies so he has form. Filming is expected to start in September.
A small town girl (Aguilera) heads to LA, where she ends up starring in the show at the burlesque joint run by Tess (Cher). Can she help save the club? Camp as a row of tents, and some good musical numbers, plus fab performances by Stanley Tucci and Alan Cumming.
Frank, an American, visits Italy in a bid to heal his broken heart and meets the mysterious Elise. A romantic thriller which was panned by the critics.
eleased in 1965 (a whole year before I even existed), the film tells the story of Freddie Clegg, a lonely young man who is in love with a beautiful young art student who would not even give him the time of day, were he to pluck up the courage to ask. A football pools win allows Clegg the opportunity to buy a remote country house with a large outbuilding, complete with cellar. Inspired by his hobby of butterfly collecting, Clegg hatches a plan to snatch Miranda Grey and keep her in the cellar, forcing her to get to know him over time.
H
aving succeeded in doping her with a chloroform soaked rag, Clegg brings her back to the cellar which he has kitted out with all kinds of art equipment and comfortable furnishings. He explains to the shocked student that his only wish is for her to get to know him and that his motives behind the kidnap are, in his mind at least, honourable. Sensing that her promised release will never happen, Miranda tries a number of escape techniques, eventually wounding Clegg to the extent that he needs to be hospitalised, sealing her own fate as she is left bound and gagged in the freezing cellar.
T
he film is pretty faithful to the original book and Terence Stamp obviously plays Clegg with the right mix of menace and vulnerability because he won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival that year, while co-star Samantha Eggar won Best Actress at the same awards ceremony for her portrayal of Miranda Grey.
W
ith over 60 film appearances under his belt, Terence Stamp has played a wide variety of weird and wacky parts, from Superman’s archvillain General Zod, to Hitler´s disloyal servant, General Ludwig Beck, in Tom Cruise’s 2008 film Valkyrie.
D
espite Terence Stamp’s award winning work in The Collector, I’ve always been surprised that this film hasn’t been remade at some point. It has the kind of creepy ‘could happen’ element that keeps shower curtains twitching in American motels decades after Psycho. There´s nothing in the story of The Collector that precludes it from taking place in a modern setting, not even in a remote finca somewhere in the heart of Andalucía. Friends of lottery winners take note.

Peter Cripps I wonder how many foreigners have bothered to register to vote in the up and coming election. Until very recently I didn’t realise that just because I have decided to be totally legal here and have got my residencia, NIE, empadron,
Coin bank accounts, car and everything else properly done that I also have to sign on another register to actually vote. No wonder lots of us “guiries” don’t bother but, if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain when things don’t go your way, or indeed the way you think

So, if you have registered properly, I urge you to go out, (yes, even if it’s raining yet again) and put your mark on that ballot paper. Every vote counts and you could make a difference.

restrained. In actual fact, this is no longer enough to be driving legally. A Posh Pets’ client was recently stopped by the police – the officer told her that her dogs were being transported illegally. She pointed out that they were both restrained and behind the guard, but he told her that to comply fully with the law the dogs needed to be in a travel crate or box. This is
indeed the case, but like so many laws in Spain, it’s perfectly possible that some policemen are not aware of it and therefore your readers will not have a problem if stopped. But it’s important to know that if you bump into a rather more zealous policeman you could well run the risk of incurring a heavy fine.

A Royal Flush! Any early risers this Friday morning April 29th are in for a real treat and will witness a regal coming together... no, not William and Kate, but a different kind of heavenly bodies.
I
f you have a clear view of the eastern horizon just before sunrise then you should be able to see an incredible lining up of no less than eight members of the Solar System, nine if you count the Sun as well.
same region along with the most distant planet Neptune. The only planet missing from the whole group is Saturn which at the moment is appearing in the evening sky so is on ‘our side’ of the Sun.
A
T
ll the planets orbit the Sun along a very narrow plane throughout the Solar System so occasionally they sometimes appear to come very close to each other in what is known as a conjunction. Of course they are not really close together, in fact they are millions of miles apart, it is just that they all appear to lie along the same line of sight. A conjunction of two or even three planets is fairly common but to have so many as will appear on Friday morning is very rare indeed. It is thought that a conjunction between Venus and Jupiter when they almost touched in the sky and so appeared as one very bright star could have been the star of Bethlehem.
S
tarting closest to the horizon on Friday morning will be Jupiter, slightly above Jupiter is Mars, these two planets are almost directly on the far side of the Sun from us so will be at their most distant from Earth. Follow the line up to the right and you will come across Mercury and Venus. Venus as always will be the brightest of the group and so the easiest to spot. About half way between Venus and the crescent Moon will be Uranus. You’ll need a telescope to see Uranus as it too is on the far side of the Sun and so is very faint but trust me, it’s there. You will also have to trust me when I tell you that the largest of all the asteroids – Ceres – is also in the
he narrow band across the sky that the Sun, Moon and all the planets move through during their orbits is known as the ecliptic as this is where eclipses occur. It is along this band that all the constellations of the Zodiac appear, so I’m sure that the Astrology community will find some meaningful significance in all this alignment with the majority of the grouping occurring in the constellation of Pisces the fishes.
I
never cease to be amazed at the imagination of the ancient Greeks, Romans and Babylonians who managed to invent the figures of the Zodiac using the stars within this region of the sky, although one or two of them do stretch the imagination a little. here has been a lot of talk recently and even movies made about a socalled alignment of the planets that according to the Mayan calendar will destroy the Earth on December 21st 2012. All the planets will be scattered around the solar system like balls on a snooker table on that date so I would think it’s a fairly safe bet that we’ll all still be alive to see Christmas!

Frock still under wraps as big day approaches
It’s a lark rise in tourist numbers
Kate’s dress is reportedly being finalised in a room in Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace has finally revealed the names of the 1,900 guests who will attend the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday – Posh and Becks WILL be there, along with Sir Elton John, and Spain will be represented by Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, and Queen Sofia. There is the usual extensive list of dignitaries and politicians from the Commonwealth and countries with strong ties to the UK, including the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Peter Caruana, and his wife. Another Spaniard attending will be Miriam Gonzalez Dunatez, attending in her role as wife of the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. There are many representatives of Church and State and the defence services as well as many charities supported by William and Harry, and the world of sport is represented by, among others, Sir Trevor Brooking and Sir Clive Woodward. A number of commanding officers and service
colleagues of both William and Harry have also been invited. The day will be poignant for invitee Holly Dyer, whose sister Joanne was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan in 2007. Joanne was a close friend of William when both were training at Sandhurst. It will also be a happy occasion tinged with sadness for Mrs Susie Roberts, widow of Major Alexis Roberts, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2007. Major Roberts was William’s platoon commander at Sandhurst. Sir Elton John performed the revised version of “Candle In The Wind” at the funeral of William’s mother Princess Diana. David Beckham and William worked together as
ambassadors for England in the 2018 World Cup bid. Other celebs on the guest list include Prince Charles’s close friend Rowan Atkinson, movie director Guy Ritchie, singer Joss Stone – who performed at a Diana tribute concert – and Mario Testino, the photographer who took the couple’s engagement photograph and is known world wide for the enduring iconic shots he took of Diana. Only close family and friends will actually be able to see the wedding ceremony. The configuration of Westminster Abbey means that the majority will have to rely on video screens inside the building.
Search engine Google has revealed that 162 million internet pages have mentioned the wedding. And a lot of folk have been busy with wool and needles – 15,000 copies of the Knit Your Own Royal Wedding book have been sold, which includes patterns for all the royals, plus the Queen’s corgis. As the UK gears itself up for the bank holiday to celebrate the wedding a lot of people in Hertfordshire are getting ready to put up the bunting. It is the county with the highest number of applications to hold street parties – 298. And as of going to press the name of the designer of the royal wedding dress was still a closely guarded secret.
TV tourism has taken off big time in the UK as millions visit the sites where their favourite programmes are made. Nine million fans have visited the locations of Downton Abbey and Lark Rise to Candleford in the last year. And according to a new report 22 million more people plan to make journeys to the real-life sets of their favourite programmes. Already in 2011 one in eight Brits has visited a British film or TV landmark, according to motoring and leisure association CSMA. One in 10 want to visit Highclere Castle in Berkshire, home to ITV’s Downton Abbey – that would result in a 400 per cent rise in visitor numbers for the property. And it’s not just stately homes that are pulling in
the crowds. Gavin and Stacey and Being Human were both filmed in Barry Island, South Wales, and the area is expecting more than 3 million visitors wanting to pay homage to their favourite shows. Cardiff has welcomed nearly two million Doctor Who fans keen to explore the area where the awardwinning series is filmed. The Yorkshire village of Holmfirth has long been a day-trip destination for fans of Last of The Summer Wine, along with picturesque Turville in Buckinghamshire, which still draws fans of the Vicar of Dibley, even though the show ended five years ago. Even the location of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage, on the Dorset-Devon border, is a firm favourite with day trippers.

Shorts for men are fashion tops New sales figures for John Lewis and online fashion company ASOS have revealed that the sale of men’s shorts has more than doubled between January and April this year, compared with the same period last year. It’s one in the eye for ultracool designer Tom Ford, who only last week said that it was unacceptable for men to leave the house in shorts, no matter how hot the weather, unless they were being worn for sport or to go to the beach.
But don’t think your man on the Costa or in the campo is now the height of fashion. Those shorts have to be smartly tailored and teamed with shoes and proper shirts if they are to make the fashion mark.

Flip flops bad for you
New take on longevity Many assume biology is the critical factor in longevity so if your parents lived to be 85, you probably will, too. Not so, say Drs Howard S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin in their book “The Longevity Project”: “Genes constitute about one-third of the factors leading to long life, the other two-thirds have to do with lifestyles and chance.” The book is based on a study that started in 1921, when Dr. Lewis Terman chose 1,528 bright San Francisco 11-year-olds for a long-term study of the social predictors of intellectual leadership. Dr. Terman interviewed the children, their families, their

Dr. Terman died in 1956, but colleagues continued the regular interviews with the original subjects, asking the same questions Dr. Terman had asked. Twenty years ago, Dr. Friedman and Dr. Martin studied Dr. Terman’s records, dredged up death certificates and asked Dr. Terman’s questions of study participants’ survivors. They also conducted a group
analysis of other similar studies, and collaborated with experts in many fields. They concluded that the key traits to a long life are prudence and persistence. “The findings clearly revealed that the best childhood personality predictor of longevity was conscientiousness,” they write, “the qualities of a prudent, persistent, well-

As well as being able to detect cancer molecules in the exhaled breath of headand-neck cancer patients, it also distinguished between lung cancer patients and healthy people, and between headand-neck and lung cancer patients. Head-and-neck cancer, which includes cancers of the eyes, mouth, larynx and oesophagus, includes a range of different tumour types occurring in the tissues or organs in the head and neck, for example salivary glands and mucus membranes. Because it lacks specific symptoms, head-and-neck cancer is often diagnosed late, when it is more difficult to treat effectively. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said these interesting initial results show promise for the development of a breath test to detect head-andneck cancers but it was a small study, at a very early stage, “so many more years of research with patients will be needed to see if a breath test could be used in the clinic”.

Happy 1st Birthday to Centro Finlandia Fuengirola Centro Finlandia in Fuengirola celebrated its first birthday in style last week - despite the poor weather! The complex is easily found in Calle Olivia at the Los Boliches end of Fuengirola. The celebrations started at 11am last Wednesday and continued throughout the day with the Centre and Café Dos Leones 2 drawing in the crowds. You could start the day with coffee and traditional Finnish pastries in the Café Dos Leones 2, before wandering around the colourful stalls full of Finnish and Scandinavian treats plus interesting displays from the
businesses based in the Centro Finlandia and in the parts of the Costa del Sol. More than 2000 people visited Centro Finlandia during the course of the day and there was plenty to enjoy, from the street basketball and other games to entertainment from various Finnish entertainers. Radio Global Finland interviewed people for a forthcoming Finnish Reality TV
programme about living on the Costa del Sol. The programme has been following people about their everyday lives for the past five weeks here on the Costa and will be broadcast on “Finnish Channel 4” in September. The film crew are looking forward to a rest but will be returning next year to make a follow up programme. And they reckon the hospitality they have received here on the coast has been fantastic. Throughout the day there were workshops, displays and demonstrations in telecommunications, Finnish design, make up from the beauty salon, hairdressing, Physiotherapy, medical treatments Finnish gastronomy, real estate
companies and an exhibition from a sauna company. Everybody enjoyed the good music and the happy relaxed atmosphere, taking part in the talks and displays. Centro Finlandia and Restaurant Dos Leones 2 were full of people all day and attracted large crowds of passers-by stopping to enjoy the atmosphere and the Finnish cuisine at Restaurant Dos Leones 2, which served up an amazing selection of Finnish delicacies during the day. So happy birthday and many happy returns to the Centro Finlandia and to all of the people based in what
has now become a flagship destination for the local Scandinavian community but you don’t have to be Scandinavian to visit. Some of the shops and businesses that occupy Centro Finlandia include: a hair and beauty salon, a telecoms company, the local Finnish newspaper offices, a satellite company, a physiotherapist, plus estate agencies and an insurance agency. There are some truly remarkable design concepts going on at
Centro Finlandia so look here before you purchase elsewhere. For everything Finnish that you may need, Centro Finlandia has someone that can supply it! Ideally situated on the outskirts of Los Boliches at the beginning of the main shopping street coming from Fuengirola, why not pop along, have a browse around the Centre’s facinating shops and stop for a coffee and a bite to eat in Dos Leones 2. You won’t be disappointed!

The planet Saturn has been pulling out his rule book and making life more difficult than usual for you Aries, which has triggered a hypersensitivity and defensive posture between yourself and others. There has been a lot of energy sizzling beneath the surface, however, Mercury has finally moved in direct motion allowing you to direct that festering energy more productively. Gateways will begin to open – the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel at last. There are some difficult choices and decisions to make, this is because there are no clear cut answers right now and you have to trust your gut instincts to direct you. This can be a major turning point in your career and professional life and it is up to you to demonstrate to those in authority your determination and personal strength to see something through to the end. You have been selected to take the lead this week. Few feelings compare to the victory that comes from a hard won fight, it takes a lot of painstaking effort to lead to an outcome that you have been determined to create. Now you are beginning to feel liberated and this feeling inspires you to keep going. There are clear signals all around you in the form of refreshing feedback that will act as validation for the energy that you have invested in certain areas. It is all starting to make a huge difference. This week is all about being disciplined and positive, only allowing in what is nurturing and light hearted to help you to remain focused and on track. This is because at the moment your emotional state is so sensitive to outside influences, it requires a strong will and a positive state of mind to keep you balanced and stable. Lately your mind has had to work extra hard to keep your emotions from taking a wild ride. By the weekend you will feel back in charge and on top of things. You are being asked to drop the illusions and focus on how you can make a real difference to your own life and to the lives of others. What matters most is that you know you are headed in the right direction, that all the choices you have made that led you to this place were not wasted and without reason. Lately you have been questioning and these thoughts may have left you a few regrets, you now probably wish to ‘bury the hatchet’ and put things right. A brand new perspective dawns on you this week and you can see the potential for growth as well as the need to plan carefully. It is all about taking your time and getting it right to create a solid foundation for the future, seeing the bigger picture and appreciating what you already have. There is likely to be powerful emotions welling up inside and it is important not to let them get the best of you – do not cave into any negativity that may come your way.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
This week we have some street party recipes so you have no excuse! Royal wedding parties are the order of the day on Friday for bars on the coast and inland, but if you are not planning to spend the day at your local, then here’s two recipes to feed your street party/house guests.
Sun-dried tomato and rosemary palmiers Ingredients: ● 500g/1lb 2oz ready-made puff pastry ● plain flour, for dusting ● 1 x 280g/10oz jar sun-dried tomatoes, drained and finely chopped ● few sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves only, finely chopped ● 1 egg, lightly beaten
Directions 1. Put the puff pastry on a well-floured surface and bash it with a rolling pin. Usually you need to be quite delicate with puff pastry as it needs to puff up a lot, but for palmiers it only needs to puff up a little. Roll the pastry out into a rectangle about 30 x 35cm/12 x 14in and the thickness of a £1 coin. Spread the tomatoes over the puff pastry and sprinkle over the rosemary. 2. With the shortest end facing you, take both long edges of the pastry and roll them towards each other to meet in the middle. Brush a little egg down the centre to stick the two halves together. Carefully lift into a large baking tray (making sure it will fit in your fridge first) and put in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to chill and harden.
3. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 4. Remove the roll from the fridge and using a very sharp knife, slice it into 1cm/½in thick pieces. Lay each piece on the baking tray, cutside up, and brush well with the beaten egg, then bake in the oven for 10–15 minutes until puffed up, crisp and golden-brown. 5. Remove the palmiers from the oven and leave to cool on the baking tray. 6. To serve, pile them high on a plate. These are great little canapés for waiting guests.

Social encounters with others should start to go more smoothly because you won't be so hesitant to say what you really feel. It is also going to be a better time to start making agreements and to form some partnerships that will last way into the future. Keep in mind though that things will rd September 23 not happen in the ‘usual’ way, therefore, you must remain adaptable and nd October 22 flexible.
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
Something may not be feeling quite right and you could be feeling like you are out of synch with the rest of the universe. You have come to question so many things recently which have driven you to doubt even the areas where you felt secure and saturated with confidence. Your relationship with many things is in the process of changing; you have been on a tiring treadmill of sorts and it is just about time to get off. By the weekend a big weight will have lifted from your shoulders.
SAGITTARIUS The opportunity to start over again at the beginning of a brand new cycle opens up. Even if others ‘do you wrong’ this week it will all end up working to your advantage as you overcome any negativity that is thrown at you. See past the drama and the madness out there and listen to yourself and you can’t go wrong. This is a romantic time so indulge by pampering yourself and that nd November 22 special someone – things are definitely looking up. st December 21
CAPRICORN How long is a piece of string? This is a question that is difficult to answer unless you have the string in front of you and have the means to measure it with a ruler but then how do you know it is referring to the piece of string sitting in front of you. Life can be a mystery at times and it is for you right now, a problem is just too entangled to solve, so really the question should be how much December 22nd staying power do you have? A supporting piece of information will reach you January 19th this week – hang in there.

PISCES
February 19th March 20th
There is no quality like persistence and your tenacity with a certain project, knocking on plenty of doors and not backing down no matter what has been thrown at you, is about to turn around. You have been climbing a mountain and battling hard but you have also been rising to the occasion and this week is no exception. There is relief coming so this is no time to throw in the towel, keep going – if you really want it – it is yours. You could feel that it is all down to you, that you are the one doing all the work and others are just hitching a ride on your efforts. There is no doubt that you are in a very productive and prosperous cycle and will be too for some time. Pisces is one of the most giving signs, but only as long as those who receive understand it is a gift and not an expectation. This is your time to plant your seeds for the future, hard work is ahead but it is worth it, so use your energy wisely.
Coronation prawn vol-au-vents Ingredients: ● 350g/12oz puff pastry ● 1 egg, beaten, plus 1 egg yolk ● 15g/½oz butter ● 50g/1¾oz plain flour ● 200ml/7fl oz hot fish stock ● 1 tbsp curry paste, mixed with 1 tbsp water to form a smooth paste ● salt and freshly ground black pepper ● 75ml/2¾fl oz double cream ● 18 king prawns, cooked, peeled
● 1 tbsp flaked almonds ● 3 spring onions, chopped
Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 2. Roll the pastry out on a floured surface to 5mm/¼in thick. Cut out 12 circles using a 9cm/3½in plain cutter. Cut a smaller circle out of the centre of six of the circles. 3. Place the six full circles onto a baking sheet and brush with a little beaten egg. Place the six circles with a hole cut out on top of each of the full circles and transfer to the oven for 1015 minutes, or until risen and golden-brown. 4. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a frying pan, stir in the flour and cook until the mixture forms a smooth paste. 5. Remove from the heat and gradually whisk in the hot fish stock and curry paste.
6. Return to the heat, season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat until the mixture is simmering, stirring constantly for 10-12 minutes or until thickened. 7. Beat the egg yolk and cream together in a bowl, then whisk into the sauce. Stir the prawns, nuts and spring onions into the sauce and spoon into the cooked pastry shells. 8. Return to the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes. Serve immediately. Enjoy your Royal Wedding Party day!

Toyota's car production in Japan plummeted by a staggering two-thirds in March due to a parts supply crunch following the country's earthquake and tsunami. The magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11th destroyed many factories in northeastern Japan, causing severe parts shortages for Toyota and other automakers, while damage to a major nuclear plant has disrupted power supplies. Domestic production at Toyota, the world's largest automaker, fell 62.7pc in March.
Ecclestone in quit threat F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has suggested he could retire if Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation group wins control of F1 motor racing. It was reported last week that News
Corporation has held preliminary talks with Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim – a backer of the Sauber team and its driver Sergio Perez – and with people connected to one of the 'big car manufacturers' currently involved in the sport about forming a consortium. According to the report, the purchase of F1 is one option being investigated by News Corp, with the other possibility being that it could instead elect to bid for the UK broadcast rights when the
BBC's five-year deal expires at the end of 2013 rather than try to secure a direct stake in the sport. Although Ecclestone, who retains a stake in F1 as well as running it on behalf of CVC Capital Partners, subsequently rubbished the claims, insisting that sport isn't for sale, he's now added that he will only work with people he wants to. “I'm old enough to get a pension, so I don't have to get a job,” the 80-year-old
told Murdoch owned The Sunday Times. “I'd have to be sure the people [who end up owning F1] are people I would like to work with and whether they would want to work with me.” However, it remains to be seen how a broadcast deal with News Corp and BskyB would be viewed by those within the sport given that it would take F1 away from the free-to-air market and more than likely lead to a reduction in viewing figures as a result.
Renault’s Kubica discharged Renault F1 pilot Robert Kubica has been discharged from Santa Corona hospital, it has been announced. The Pole had been in the Italian hospital since the rally crash back in February that left him with multiple injuries after an armco barrier penetrated the cockpit of his Skoda Fabia S2000.

Visitors to the event will be able to enjoy all the Beaulieu attractions, including the National Motor Museum’s latest exhibition ”Feats of Endurance” which has among its exhibits, the Camel Trophy winning Land Rover Discovery. ‘Must sees’ also include World of Top Gear and the James Bond Exhibition as well as Palace House and gardens. “Robert Kubica is no longer at Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure,” confirmed a statement to the media. “His condition is good and the driver will be able to begin a new rehabilitation phase outside the hospital. “He will carry on being monitored by the Santa Corona doctors who had him in their care through scheduled appointments. He has good sensitivity, but not in every spot. The hand is there though, and should regain good functionality.” It is now understood Kubica will have a short period of rest at his Monaco home, before moving to Dr. Ceccarelli's facilities in Italy where he is due to start a 'deep rehabilitation programme'.

It’s only a game With £100,000-a-week to play around with, millionaire Italian footballer Mario Balotelli constantly flouts parking rules, notching up almost £10,000 in parking fines. On top of that the Manchester City player’s obligatory supercar, a white Maserati, has been impounded some 27 times. Frustrated liaison officers at Manchester City have had to go and pick up his car for him every time it gets towed away. A source at the club told The Sun newspaper: 'Mario will drive from his luxury apartment to a restaurant a few streets away and leave the car on double yellows. “The other week the Maserati misfired so he just abandoned it. Staff have had to bail it out 27 times. “The valet the club uses empties the glovebox of
tickets every time he cleans it. Mario doesn't seem to care. It's a drop in the ocean to him.” But it seems that's just the tip of the iceberg as far as his arrogance is concerned. According to the report, Balotelli was allegedly once pulled over by police with £25,000 in cash on his passenger seat. When asked why he had the money, he simply said 'Because I can'. Balotelli has also had to pay out £300,000 in club fines, most recently for throwing darts at a youth team player. And on the field he has had ten yellow cards and two reds in only 24 appearances.

Donald loses out
Bowls news from Mijas
American Brandt Snedeker came from six shots back to April has been a busy month at Mijas Bowls Club this year , and the weather once again played a major part defeat Luke Donald on Sunday in a 3 hole playoff. The winter championships have just finished and two Mijas teams did very well, winning in the ladies triples with Pam Cole, Dine Warn and Lynda Hall, which was a very exciting match to watch. In winning the final they beat an excellent team from Lauro.
The drama all took place at the Heritage on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and denied Donald the top spot in the World Golf Rankings. Donald, would have become the No.1 ranking had he won. Instead, Lee Westwood moved to No.1 replacing Martin Kaymer, after he had won the Indonesian Masters earlier in the day. But Donald’s luck ran out on Harbour Town Golf Links’ closing lighthouse hole, No. 18, when his ball became partly buried in the front bunker. Donald blasted out to 15 feet from the flag, but still just off the green, and his chip for par hit the back edge of the hole and bounced away, giving Snedeker his second career PGA Tour title and his first since winning the 2007 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. In regulation play Snedeker finished with a seven-under 64 to match Donald at 12 under, Donald shooting his second straight
70. Another American Tommy Gainey finished a stroke back after a closing 68. “It was going to be some big rewards if I won today,” Donald said. “But I’ll try and find the positives from this week and move on.” The defending champion Jim Furyk, was meant to be Donald's biggest challenger and started the day just one stroke behind. But Snedeker it was who posted the score that everyone was going to have to beat. He started 10 groups before the leaders and forced his way into contention with seven
birdies in his first 12 holes. And after rolling in a 12footer for par on his 72nd hole he headed to the clubhouse to wait. Donald managed to scramble his pars from difficult spots on the 71st and 72nd holes to force the tournament into a playoff. Both players had birdies on the first extra hole, the 18th, after two stunning shots, and then had pars on the second one, the 17th. Snedeker hit the green on the third playoff hole the 18th again, Donald found a bunker with his second shot and could only splash the ball out to the far edge of the green. With Snedeker tapping in for his par, it left Donald needing to hole his chip, but his superb effort bounced off the back of the hole and rolled away to hand victory to the American. "It's a storybook ending, to be playing Luke in a playoff," said Snedeker after winning his second PGA Tour title.

Mijas also won in the men’s pairs with Don Smith and Kevin Blow beating Bill Gregory and Mike Dethridge from Benalmadena. Very well done to both teams, all at Mijas are very proud of them. Now the winter birds are leaving and we are fewer in number for
The victorious Mijas ladies, Pam, Dine and Lynda
"To even have a chance to win was exciting to me. I didn't really have any expectations at all. "I came out and just kind of everything clicked. I drove the ball fantastic and came up with a lot of birdie opportunities." and twoputted for par. Report by: Mike Kerrigan

Away win boosts survival Racing Santander 1 - 2 Malaga After last week’s great home performance against Mallorca, the Malaga fans were looking for more of the same as the team travelled to Santander. Racing began the game well, as early as the second minute with Rosenberg shooting into the side netting when he really should have done better, and eight minutes later Willy Caballero saving well from the same player. Rondon headed on to the bar after 17 minutes and Malaga began to take control. Julio Baptista was again a key figure for Manuel Pellegrini's side and
following his two goals last weekend after a return from injury, he was on target again with a stunning strike in this clash to give Malaga the lead after 31 minutes, powering a shot home from 30 metres. Baptista was then off target with an overhead kick three minutes later, but his mishit effort fell to Fernandez, who headed straight at Racing’s goalie Tono, but he was able to fire home the rebound. Racing piled on the pressure in the second period and Rosenberg gave the home side hope with 17 minutes left, but Malaga remained firm to claim all

Henson‘sacked’ by Toulon Gavin Henson’s ill-fated Toulon career is understood to be over after he was axed having played just two games. Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal has decided the Welshman will not play for the French side again following his involvement in a brawl with team-mates earlier this month. Henson, 29, joined the Top 14 club in February but made only two appearances before the altercation following a victory over Toulouse led to him being suspended.
SNOOKER Ronnie The Rocket goes through Ronnie O'Sullivan set up a quarter-final clash of the snooker titans with John Higgins, as his resurgence continued at the Betfred.com World Championship. O'Sullivan converted a 9-7 twosession lead over Shaun Murphy into a 13-10 triumph as he turned on the style in the Crucible. He rammed in breaks of 128 and 119 to leave Murphy stuck in his seat, and when the 2005 champion did begin to fight back he left himself too much ground to make up. O'Sullivan versus Murphy had been branded a grudge match, after Murphy called O'Sullivan's behaviour ‘unprofessional’ 'pathetic' and ‘disrespectful’.
