Security alert follows Bin Laden's death Leaders around the world welcomed the death of Osama Bin Laden but many have warned that the war on terror is not over, as security was stepped up worldwide in case of an Al-Qaeda backlash. Bin Laden's death continues to dominate the headlines and observers will now decide how history will remember the man who brought terror to the streets, and debate who is likely to assume his mantle. The Spanish government said Bin Laden's death was a decisive step in the fight against international terrorism and reiterated its commitment to
cooperating with the United States and other nations to combat terrorism. Yesterday, Pakistan's main intelligence agency, the ISI, admitted embarrassment over its failure to identify the Bin Laden compound – just a few hundred yards from the country's military academy and 60 kms from the capital – and tension grew between India and Pakistan. Just ten years ago Osama
Bin Laden was hero, sheik, even leader to many. After his death on Monday, the man who had vowed to liberate the Arab world was seen as nothing more than
a footnote for people who were actively involved in their own revolutions and uprisings. Continued on page 2

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Cruising not for me...!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
A couple of weeks ago I finished my column with the sentiment that “a cruise would be nice.” So last week, that's exactly what I did! We had booked it a while ago. My husband had wanted to have a taste of cruising but as I'm one of those people that are terribly travel sick I didn't want to spend something like three grand on something that would be a total waste of money. However, when we were at the 'Over 50s Show' in Torremolinos a while ago, a travel agent in Valencia was celebrating their 25th anniversary in business with a 4 day mini cruise to Majorca and Sardinia for only €25 plus port taxes so I could hardly get out of it. The boat was small but comfortable and the crew and staff were excellent. Even the food was good but, was I travel sick, indeed I was and felt absolutely lousy for the four days! We got back from Valencia on Friday at 6.30am after a twelve hour journey in a coach being driven by a lunatic and we are still recovering from it all. Oddly enough, we've decided that it will be planes and hotels for us in the future. can't imagine why! On Saturday evening we attended a lovely 50th birthday party for a friend in Fuengirola. Med was totally surprised by it as he thought he was going to someone else’s birthday do, and his son that he hadn't seen for a few months was there so there were a few tears of joy shed. And well done to his wife lorraine for organising such a great evening out.

Security alert follows Bin Laden's death Reactions to the news of his death ran from anger in the most conservative areas of Lebanon to jubilation among Shiite Muslims in Iraq, where thousand had fallen victim to carnage committed in the name of his organization. But in countries like Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and elsewhere, Bin Laden was little more than an echo of a bygone time of divides between West and East, American omnipotence and Arab weakness, dictatorship and powerlessness. The only people in the region citing Bin Laden’s name recently had been the mouthpieces of Libyan leader Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, and former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who evoked his threat to justify clinging to power.
Reactions elsewhere As western countries, governments and politicians welcomed the news of Bin Laden's death, in sub-Saharan Africa, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki said: “The killing of Osama has taken place nearly 13 years after the terrorist bombings in Nairobi that led to the death of over 200 people, in
an act believed to have been masterminded by Osama. His killing is an act of justice to those Kenyans who lost their lives and the many more who suffered injuries.” And in a statement the Ethiopian government said: “Al-Qaeda has wreaked havoc in stateless Somalia, killed and maimed many innocent people in Kenya and Tanzania, and has for years been engaged in terrorist activities aimed at destabilising the Horn of Africa. Although the death of Osama Bin Laden does not mean the end of the anti-terrorist struggle, it is, nonetheless, a big victory for the global anti-terrorist forces.” Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, meanwhile, denied that the killing of Osama Bin Laden in his country is a sign of its failure to tackle terrorism. In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, Mr Zardari said his country was "perhaps the world's greatest victim of terrorism". Another dissenting voice was that of former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf who said it was a good military action but not a good political one
WEATHER WEATHER
In a statement, the Indian foreign ministry said: “The world must not let down its united effort to overcome terrorism and eliminate the safe havens and sanctuaries that have been provided to terrorists in our own neighbourhood. The struggle must continue unabated.” A Chinese government statement dryly “noted the announcement and believe that this is a major event and a positive development in the international struggle against terrorism”.
Ecuador's foreign minister Ricardo Patino said: “If the United States managed to kill Bin Laden, they can celebrate it. I'm not celebrating anyone's
death.” In death as in life, Bin Laden continues to arouse conflicting emotions.
The road is NOW OPEN and SO ARE WE!
In Latin America, the Mexican government acknowledged the efforts of the United States in fighting and capturing the head of Al-Qaeda, “one of the world's cruellest and bloodiest terror organisations”. Brazilian foreign minister Antonio Patriota was more worried about reprisals, while

and hurt the “sensitivities of Pakistan regarding the violation of the sovereignty of Pakistan. “Before this, we have captured dozens of Al-Qaeda operatives but never have any US troops been involved. This is the first time where it was intelligence and action by US troops across our border”.

Government loses ally The Supreme Court's ruling on Sunday to ban the Bildu coalition of Basque proindependence parties from running in the May 22nd municipal elections brought an immediate and highly critical reaction from the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which helped the government to push its 2011 budget through Parliament late last year. PNV leader Iñigo Urkullu told a press conference on Monday that his party would not support the government on future parliamentary initiatives. Basque left-wing parties, which generally sympathise with the terrorist group ETA and its aim of independence from Spain, had tried to form a political party called Sortu earlier this year. But there was a generalised opposition to it in the rest of Spain because many of its founder members had belonged to the banned Batasuna party, considered to be ETA's political wing. Batasuna had refused to condemn political violence

as required by the Political Parties Law and was banned by the Aznar government in 2003. Realising that Sortu would not be able to get past the stringent requirements for registering as a political party in time to run in the May 22nd election, its members entered into a coalition with other smaller parties, called Bildu. However, the Supreme Court considers that Bildu is a front for ETA sympathisers and is taking its orders directly from ETA leaders still in hiding. A Guardia Civil report has estimated that if allowed to run, Bildu could obtain absolute
majorities in 53 municipalities in the eastern Basque provinces and neighbouring Navarre. Bildu itself had aspired to obtaining 822 councillors who would manage some €300 million in municipal funds. This would be a useful source of money for ETA which, according to the Guardia report, only has sufficient funds to continue operating for another two years. ETA recently declared a “verifiable” truce and in an effort to convince the authorities of its sincerity, it recently informed Basque businessmen that it would no longer be collecting the “revolutionary tax” which many have been paying for

Jobless rate fuels May Day marches The record jobless rate of 4,910,200 helped the two main trade unions, the CC OO (Workers Commissions) and the UGT (General Workers Union) to stage International Workers' Day marches in 80 cities across the country on Sunday. They were attended by between 7,000 (in Malaga) and 40,000 (Barcelona) while 10,000 joined UGT Secretary-General Cándido Méndez, CCOO leader Ignacio Toxo and regional trade union leaders in Valencia. The labour reforms introduced
last year by prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's government were the main target of their ire while their main demand centred on a new approach to the economic crisis. Sr Méndez told the Valencia crowds: "They said they were going to
create a favourable environment for the creation of employment and unemployment has continued rising, they said these measures would inject confidence into Spanish society, and the despondency continues; they said this labour
reform was going to improve the granting of indefinite contracts in a direct way and one year later there are 130,000 indefinite contracts fewer." Sr Toxo told them: "We have 4,910,200 more reasons to demand alternative solutions."
Record drop in road deaths For the first time since records began, road deaths dropped to below 40 during Easter Week, “something which we once thought impossible”, interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said when he made the announcement
at a press conference last week. Between 3pm on Friday, April 15th and midnight on Monday, April 25th, 39 people lost their lives on Spanish roads, five less than the previous year. There
was also a drop in the number of injured – down to 195 this year from 249 in 2010. Sr Rubalcaba said it was impossible to say if the drops had anything to do with the lower speed limit of 110 km per hour and did not guarantee that the limit
www.thenewsonline.es
would be back to normal at the end of June, as originally announced. He said the lower speed limit was introduced because price of oil had gone up as a result of unrest in Libya. “That price is still high”, he said.
People in Spain have a difficult time combining work with family, according to the latest report from the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It said there were not enough day care centres for children outside of school hours so that parents often had to resort to “informal” arrangements. As a result, a quarter of the country's grandparents are acting as nannies for their grandchildren, and women put off having children because they needed to work. The birth rate in Spain is 1.4 (the same as 20 years ago) as
opposed to 1.7 for the organization's other 34 member countries. And while government help for families rose between 2003 to 2007 to 1.6 per cent of the GDP, it’s below the 2.2 per cent average in other OECD countries. The number of poor children is also higher – 17.3 per cent as opposed to the OECD average of 12.7 per cent.
Speed limit saves money Industry, energy and tourism minister Miguel Sebastian reported last week that the reduction of the speed limit to 110 km per hour had saved the government €94 million in the first three weeks it was in force – money which could now be spent on
other services. According to the minister's figures, petrol consumption dropped 11.4 per cent between March 7th and 31st, while diesel sales dropped by 7.7 per cent. This was the equivalent of 137,000 tonnes of oil, or 1.1 million barrels.

Angry consumers get their say

One company that tries to satisfy unhappy customers is El Corte Inglés. A spokesman for the store's communications department said they had a system to track and follow blogs, forums and complaint forums to achieve that aim. Not all companies have the same philosophy, however. Some have taken
these websites to court, suing for damages or slander, with mixed results. A few months ago, the Supreme Court repealed a ruling against quejasonline.com, which had been sued by a lawyer from the Mutua Madrileña vehicle insurance company for damaging his reputation. In 2004, the website had posted a message using his name under false pretences. He complained and the forum removed the message but refused to give him the author's name, according to data protection regulations. He filed suit and quejasonline.com was ordered to pay him €6,000 for "moral and material damages." But the Supreme Court exonerated the forum's owners arguing that they were not responsible for the opinions of its users, and has so far ruled in other

Drunken Brit takes on six cops
An increasing number of consumers are venting their spleen online these days, thanks to portals, forums and blogs that are springing up like daisies online. Santiago Álvarez-Barón, founder of the www.miqueja.es, said he started from the premise that Spaniards tended to prefer complaining in a loud voice rather than in writing but that will soon be a thing of the past. The companies most complained about at the moment are the telecoms, followed by financial institutions, major retail outlets, electric companies and the government.

cheap, fast and they don't even have to leave their homes to do it. Even the authorities are getting in on the act. A bill for a new law on mediation in civil and mercantile affairs has been working its way through Parliament since February 2010. One of its aims is to reduce the number of minor disputes that end up in court and it will allow complaints involving sums of less than €300 to be settled online.

Police arrested a 32-year-old Briton after he tried to take the gun from one of them in a shop in the Starco Commercial Centre in Arona, Tenerife. The police said two men approached them, apparently drunk, shouting in English “F*** the police” and “Bloody bastards”. They tried to ignore the men until one of them reached for one of the agent’s gun. Six policemen were needed to control the man, who acted in a hostile manner throughout the incident. MADRID
Spain violates right to home Amnesty International has accused Spain of violating the basic human right to a home, claiming that thousands of defenceless families are currently in danger of being evicted from their homes in La Cañada Real Galiana on the outskirts of Madrid, where many of them have lived for as long as 30 years. The AI report said they are legally registered and have been paying electricity bills and taxes but they are now threatened with eviction without any type of guarantee. MADRID

Ban on smoking comes into force
A tornado roared through Auckland on Monday afternoon, killing at least two people and injuring several more, with at least 18 people taken to hospital, according to New Zealand's Stuff news website. It left a 5 km-long trail of damage, felling trees, tearing roofs off houses and overturning cars. Auckland mayor Len Brown said that the death toll could rise, and police warned local residents to stay inside until the weather settled. Meanwhile in the United
States, the National Weather Service has said the outbreak of tornadoes that ravaged the southern US last week was the largest in US recorded history. During the threeday period from April 25th to 28th 362 tornadoes struck, including some 312 in a single 24-hour period.
The previous record was 148 in two days in April 1974. The tornadoes and the storm system that spawned them killed at least 350 people in Alabama and six other states. It was the worst death toll since 1936. The review by US meteorologists came as the
southern US states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Louisiana and Kentucky continued the huge task of digging out from the destruction. On Monday, more than 400,000 people still had no power, emergency officials said.
A ban on smoking in public places has come into force aimed at curbing the number of deaths from smokingrelated diseases, running at a million a year. The new rules prohibit smoking in restaurants, hotels, railway stations and theatres, but not
offices. Employers are obliged to warn staff of the dangers of smoking but cannot stop them from lighting up. The new rules have been criticised because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them.

Angry passengers burn trains
Police charge 5-year-old boy A five-year-old boy in the state of Bihar has been charged with "disrupting the peace" during recent village council elections. Suryakant Paswan had to pay 20,000 rupees (£266) for bail and has had to report daily to police in the town of Dhibra for the past week. His arrest has caused outrage in the area. Police said it was a case of "mistaken identity" - they had meant to charge his elder brother with disorderly conduct but wrote his name down by mistake.
Furious about delays in their Monday morning commute to the Argentine AUSTRALIA capital, passengers set fire to commuter trains in three separate incidents. Picasso donated to uni Firefighters and police were called out to deal with the disturbances at three busy railway stations near Buenos Aires. The trouble started when a derailed train caused severe delays not far from the Haedo train station and the unrest quickly
spread from that stop to two neighbouring stations. Stranded passengers then set fire to at least eight wagons at the three stations and in one incident angry commuters threw the train driver and the ticket inspector off the train.
Firemen complained that the angry passengers were trying to obstruct their work when they arrived at the scene. Witnesses said the fire brigade was pelted with large stones. Trenes de Buenos Aires, which operates the train service, suspected the unrest was a
deliberate act of industrial sabotage against the firm. Police have confirmed the arrest of at least three passengers. Argentina's railway network suffers frequent delays and commuters' anger has led to violence before.
A Pablo Picasso painting worth millions of dollars, which was given to the University of Sydney by a mystery US-based donor, is expected to raise between £9m-12m when it is auctioned in London in June. The donor stipulated that proceeds from the sale of Jeune Fille Endormie (Young Girl Asleep), the 1935 painting of Picasso's lover, Marie-Therese Walter, must be used to fund scientific research. The university's vice-chancellor, Michael Spence, said the money raised would fund research into diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

incomers were registered. Mr Schaeuble said his ministry would have an additional 150 officials monitoring industries to detect illegal workers. Their statements came as the German labour market is fully opened to workers from Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary,
Slovenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia which joined the EU in 2004. Germany held out until the last moment against opening its economy to workers from the former communist countries. It is estimated that 100,000 people will migrate each year to Germany.
US urged to back Palestinians In a big shift in Egypt's foreign policy, Foreign Minister Nabil al-Araby urged the United States to support the declaration of an independent Palestinian state. The call marks a move away from past compliance with the United States and Israel, which have strongly opposed the Palestine’s campaign to win backing
for a unilateral declaration of statehood. Mr Araby said Egypt supported the Palestinian plan, and urged the US to do the same. He said the US should view a re-united Palestinian movement, including Hamas, as a positive development, and that it should persuade Israel to negotiate with it. Both Israel and the US see
as a terrorist group and not to be negotiated with. The policy change, popular in Egypt, is not without risks. It will be very unpopular in the US Congress, which must approve a substantial annual aid package that Egypt needs to help cover the immense cost to its economy of this year's upheavals.

With street parties up and down the country, as well as here in Spain, Britain went full tilt to enjoy last week’s Royal Wedding. With news channels covering the event live, over 22 million people across the UK watched the scene unfold on their televisions or on one of a multitude of big screens that were erected in parks and other public places. But what the world didn’t see was the private party that Prince Charles threw for his son and new daughter-in-law after the main event. The party, for the couple’s 300 closest friends and family, was a black-tie affair (apart from the Fez sported by Prince Harry) held in Buckingham Palace with guests still dancing until 3am to numbers from Grease among others, as singer Ellie Goulding

performed. Catherine, now Duchess of Cambridge, looked stunning in another white gown designed by Sarah Burton, creative director at the Alexander McQueen fashion house. Champagne, peach bellinis and cocktails were served to guests on arrival and at 8pm they all sat down to a dinner of crab, followed by lamb “done three ways” from the Castle of Mey, one of the Queen’s Scottish residences, followed by a trio of puddings all washed down with a white Meursault Burgundy and Pomerol claret wines. And the table names referred to places that remain special to the couple, such as St Andrew's where they met. The wine flowed for the rest of the evening plus Mojito cocktails, mixed as

E-books take off e big Business sources confirmed yesterday squeeze (Tuesday) that e-book sales have risen 300% on last year. With sales of over 180 million last year taking a 6 per cent share of overall book sales the new technology is catching on fast, particularly with the young technogeek crowd but also with the more senior generation - that has been put down to the fact that users can “zoom in” on the text to make it easier to read for those that are no longer so sure sighted. Sales are expected to rise by a further 15 per cent over the next five years but pundits say that e-books will not be taking over from the physical book for quite some time. Actual books do not attract VAT but the ebooks do, making them that much dearer to buy. However, for the sheer convenience of only having to carry one item that can hold something like 100 books or more, rather than having to transport half a dozen heavy books when travelling, particularly with the stringent air travel weight restrictions, e-books
are here to stay. The two main types of reader are the smarter looking Sony e-book (above) and Amazon’s Kindle (pictured below). Amazon sell just the Kindle version of the books and you cannot use Kindle books on the Sony e-book, but the other version can be obtained from Waterstone’s among others and there are bargains to browse through. An e-book can cost from as little as 49p.
According to new quarterly figures announced by accountancy firm Deloitte, British households are set for the biggest squeeze on their budgets since figures from 1870, with an average fall in income of some £780 per year. This figure relates to inflation rising faster than wages and some facing a drop in their wages of around 2 per cent as well. The drops mark the fourth year in a row that this has happened. The company’s economic advisor, Roger Booth, says that economic growth over 2012 is expected to be just 1.5 per cent, meaning that the Bank of England base rate is unlikely to rise in May with the Monetary Policy Committe starting their deliberations on coming interest rates today. The base rate of just 0.5 per cent is expected to remain until the beginning of 2013. However, Mr Booth expects earnings to start rising again by the end of next year, 2012.

the
Debate ends in a row Prime Minister David Cameron criticised senior BBC correspondent John Humphries in an interview for failing to grasp the way the proposed AV voting system would work. Mr Cameron said: "It is quite worrying if actually the lead broadcaster on the BBC doesn't understand the system. You don't understand the system you are supposed to be explaining to the public. I do think that's worrying. Back to school." Mr Humphries insisted that the new system would not mean that some people's votes would be counted more than once and despite lengthy explanations from the Prime Minister, it appeared that Mr Humphries just didn't understand what he was talking about. The new system, if voted
for in the referendum tomorrow (Thursday) involves voters ranking candidates for Westminster elections in order of preference. Under AV, the candidate receiving the fewest votes in each round is eliminated and the second preferences of his or her supporters redistributed between those remaining until one of them has more than 50% backing. If the count goes to several rounds, this means backers of fringe parties could have their vote counted for a number of different candidates, while those supporting the eventual winner will have it counted each time for the same person. Mr Cameron said this would result in a system where "you start counting some people's votes more than once", but Mr
Humphrys retorted: "No, you don't. That simply isn't true, that you count some votes more than once." The Prime Minister replied: "Yes, you do. You count all the votes, and then you start eliminating candidates and then you count people's second preferences." Mr Humphrys said: "And I have a second preference as well as you or anybody else and you count them again as well, so you don't count some people's votes more than others." Mr Cameron said: "You are wrong. If you vote for the Labour candidate and I vote for the Monster Raving Loony candidate and the Monster Raving Loony comes last, my second preference is then counted again," to which Mr Humphrys replied: "So is mine".
Five arrested Murder suspect at Sellafield Police arrested five men yesterday (Tuesday) near the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria under section 41 of the counter-terrorism laws after a stop check on a vehicle. The men, all in their 20s, are from the London area and can be held under section 41 for 48 hours without charge while further enquiries are made. Local police were alerted by officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, a specialist force which provides protection for civil nuclear licensed sites, who were suspicious of the men spotted close to the fences
of the site, although they have said that they are not aware of any links with Osama Bin Laden’s death. The Sellafield site, in operation since the 1940s, includes a number of nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities and waste treatment plants. Sellafield is owned by Nuclear Management Partners, a consortium of American engineering company URS, British engineering firm Amec and French nuclear reactor maker Areva. It was operating as normal on Tuesday.
Model’s PA sentenced The personal assistant to model Erin O'Connor (right) has been found guilty at Kingston Crown Court of defrauding the model out of £10,251 and of spending another £1,607 of the model's money on taxis for herself. Michelle Knox-Brown of Glyn Road, Clapton, East London pleaded guilty to the charges, admitting using the money for holidays and using O'Connor's Marks and Spencer credit card despite being paid a salary of £45,000 a year for working just three-and-a-half days a week.
Knox-Brown, who showed no emotion as the sentence was read out by Judge Andrew Campbell, has been sentenced to a 40 week suspended prison sentence and has been ordered to do 200 hours unpaid community work. He said that she had “let Miss O'Connor down very badly.
Jifeng Ding (known as Jeff), his wife Helen, 47, and their two daughters Xing, 18, and Alice, 12, were found stabbed to death at the weekend at their home in Wootton, Northampton. The family had not been seen by neighbours since Friday night. It is thought they were attacked inside the detached property before being discovered by police on Sunday. Det Supt Timmins confirmed post-mortem examinations on the four bodies had been carried out showing they had all died as a result of stab wounds, and that police were treating it as a homicide. He added that a silver Vauxhall Corsa could be key evidence in solving the murder. The car, registration BG60 PMO, had been hired by the family while their car was being repaired and it has now gone missing. A business associate of the family, 52-year-old Anxiang Du, is being sought by the police for questioning in respect of the incident and people of Northampton have been asked to report his whereabouts but have been told not to approach him.

Gil's heirs to return millions The Court of Auditors has ruled that the heirs of former Marbella mayor Jesus Gil are responsible for money that was misappropriated during his term in office and has ordered Jesus, Miguel Angel, Fernando and Maria Angeles Gil to return more than €100 million to Marbella town council - €66.1 million plus interest of €39 million. The court also ruled that former mayor Julian Muñoz, former deputy mayor Pedro Roman and former councillors Marisa Alcala, Rafael Gonzalez and Antonio Luque, are responsible for the transfers of sums of money
The Malaga branch of the Union of Consumers (UCE) plans to create a seal of quality that stores and businesses can display to assure the public that the service they offer has been approved by by the newly-created Andalucia Consumption School. UCE provincial president Jesus Burgos said the project focuses on preventing irregularities. He said the businesses which want to display the seal have to satisfy a series of requirements which will be assessed by independent quality evaluators and customers will be polled as they leave the store or business about the standard of service they have received. Sr Burgos said the seal will have to be renewed every year.

Andalucia tops jobless list Official figures show that unemployment in all the eight provinces of Andalucia is well above the national average of 21.29 per cent. Huelva leads with an unemployment rate of 32.9 per cent, followed by
Malaga, with 32.73 per cent. This means that one in three people are out of work in the province. The regional average of 29.68 per cent makes Andalucia the region with the highest unemployment in Spain.
Seville feria starts The “alumbrao” or switching on of 300,000 light bulbs marked the official opening of the 164th Sevilla feria on Tuesday night. The entrance arch this year celebrates the first round-the-world voyage by Juan Sebastian Elcano, who sailed from Sevilla in 1522, to return several months later. The feria started off as a three-day livestock fair by decree of Queen Isabell II on March 5th, 1847, and gradually developed into the celebration of flamenco, and the parading up and down of young men and women dressed in traditional attire on beautiful, prancing horses that are typical of the feria today. Thousands of people will drink, eat and make merry in the 1,047 “casetas”, while thousands more more will mill around outside, feasting their eyes, until Sunday May 8th.
'Longest case in history' Andalucia's biggest corruption case ever - the so-called Malaya case – is also threatening to become the longest ever, according to Malaga provincial court president Franciso Javier Arroyo. He said it “is much slower than expected” and “its length is becoming unsustainable from an organizational point of view”. To simplify matters, the Marbella court trying the case divided it into five “blocks” to avoid having all 95 people charged in the case in the courtroom at the same time.
Last September when the case finally went to court, it was estimated that it would take a year to bring to a conclusion. However, Sr Arroyo said it now looks as if it won't end
until the end of 2012, if then. He advised the court to speed up the questioning sessions, concentrate on the most important pieces of evidence and give up those that the passing of time has made unnecessary”.

ELECTION WATCH
Importance of foreign vote
+6%*'0 '5+)05 *19411/ 9+6* 18'4
Of the 82,483 foreigners registered to vote in the municipal elections on May 22nd, just under half – 40,410 - live in Malaga province, although local tax returns indicate that the foreign population is somewhere in the region of 370,000. Almeria comes second with 15,136 registered foreign residents, followed by Granada (7,101), Huelva (6,386), Cádiz (4,700), Sevilla (4,119), Córdoba (3,612) and Jaén (1,019). Of these foreign voters, Britons account for just under 40 per cent – 31.927 –
followed by Rumanians (14.065), the two largest colonies of EU citizens in every province in Andalucia. At the other end of the scale, there are three registered New Zealanders, two Cypriots and two Icelanders living in Andalucia. If all the registered foreigners turn
out to vote, they could change the region’s political map, which is why they are being courted assiduously by all the political parties. However, past records show that foreign residents, especially the British, are notoriously reluctant to vote.

Shortage of priests The Diocese of Malaga, which includes Melilla, is suffering from a growing shortage of local-born priests, most of whom are currently over 65. A spokesman said the number of young priests was not sufficient to replace those who had retired or died and the diocese is having to turn to foreigners, mainly Ukrainians, Rumanians and Britons. This would have had to happen in any case, the spokesman said, given the growing number of nonSpanish-born churchgoers in the diocese's 600 parishes. He gave two reasons for the drop in numbers of locally born priests – the number of priests killed in Malaga during the Civil War was proportionally higher than in the rest of the country, and just as the numbers were recovering the Church went through another crisis in the 1960s when many priests left to get married. Priests in the province earn €810 with two extra payments a year. They buy their own food and clothing but have no housing expenses.

No takers for ecopark The council's project to convert 22,000 m2 of pine wood into an adventure ecopark failed to take off when it was put out to tender last month. The only company to show interest, Divermar aventura, was rejected because its articles of association were not registered in the Commercial register. The tender has been extended and the company eventually chosen will have nine months to set up the park and 25 years to run it for an annual fee of €12,549. seville

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
On flies and mouths
Words to the appalled
‘ A
T
En boca cerrada no entran moscas’ is an old Spanish adage meaning that if you keep your mouth closed you won't ever have to eat your words.
pparently prime minister Zapatero and his ministers are not acquainted with this saying. The Partido Popular has posted a video on its website featuring statements by Zapatero and some of his minister which make them look like liars or fools who should have kept their mouths shut.
T
he video is all about unemployment, the Socialists’ Achilles heel in the upcoming elections. As you probably all know, unemployment now stands at 4, 910,200 – just 89,800 away from the dreaded five million mark. According to government figures, around a quarter of a million people lost their jobs in the first three months of this year. If this trend continues, unemployment will top 5,000,000 by the end of June if not earlier, something economy minister Elena Salgado said only last week “would never happen”.
S
o – what did Zapatero say in October 2007 when unemployment stood at just under two million? He was going to create two million more jobs in 2008. By August 2008, when unemployment was heading for three million, he was promising full employment within a year, a promise he repeated in February 2009, when the three million mark had already been passed. So what did he say in May 2010 – that he’d never promised full employment.
A
s for the state of the economy, it was in the Champions League, he said in 2008. He’d finally admitted there was a crisis – the “C” word he banned in the run up to the March 2008 general election. By 2009, the economy had “never been stronger” and since May last year he’s been swearing Spain won’t need an EU bail-out thanks to the cuts he made – after the EU leaned on him. Cuts or else, was the message, and Angela Merkel made it plain she wouldn’t support a bail-out for Spain, which would cost more than the bail-outs for Greece, Ireland and Portugal put together.
I
was fairly confident Spain wouldn’t need a bail-out but I’m not so sure now. After so many lies, U-turns and declarations that turned out to have been based on sheer optimism – lies - rather than on real facts and figures, nobody trusts him any more. This wouldn’t matter if it were just the Spanish voters who didn’t trust him – it’s the financial institutions and governments willing to back Spain with investments and lowinterest rate loans that we have to worry about. Spain simply can’t afford to have
Zapatero at the helm until March next year.
H
owever, the local and regional elections may take care of that. If the Socialists do as badly as all the polls are indicating – with the elections less than three weeks away – Zapatero may be forced to bring the general election forward. You can say what you like about the Partido Popular but Mariano Rajoy and his gang are capable of doing what Jose Maria Aznar had to do - clean up after a Socialist government. Zapatero himself admits he inherited a robust economy from Aznar – it’s a pity he couldn’t keep it that way.
Same old song
O
nce again, the Socialists are trotting out the spectre of the “extreme right” in an attempt to stop people from voting for the PP. Writing about what she calls “the habitual Doberman campaign”, columnist Edurne Uriarte points out that a poll published recently by the progovernment newspaper El Pais only mentions two parties that could be described as extreme which would win seats in the local and regional elections – and they’re both left wing. Just over 5 per cent of those questioned said they would vote for Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) which is dominated by the Communist Party. Its main aim is to get rid of the monarchy and bring in the Third Republic. A smaller number – all of them Catalans – said they would vote for ERC, the Catalan Republican Left Party, whose only aim is to separate Catalonia from Spain. The only extreme right-wing party that could take part in the elections, the Falange, doesn’t even get a mention.
T
he Socialists can’t really believe opposition leader Mariano Rajoy is the reincarnation of Hitler, Franco and the devil all rolled into one, so why are they trying to convince the voters that he is. The Socialists must have very short memories. The voters didn’t believe them in 1996, when they likened Jose Maria Aznar to a Doberman – they went ahead and voted for him anyway. Maybe the Spaniards like Dobermans.
he comments quickly spread across the social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Self-labelled pacifists didn’t hesitate to criticise the jubilation across America over the death of Osama Bin Laden; they were shocked and angry at the celebrations outside the White House in Washington and at Ground Zero in New York. How could people celebrate a murder, the death of a human being even as diabolical as he was? They seem to forget that 10 years ago they were also in an uproar over the news flashes from across the Arab world that showed street celebrations by fundamentalists, complete with machine gun fire pumped in the air, when the World Trade Centre towers came crumbling down. They also seem to overlook the domino effect caused by that tragedy, which continues today. The worst terrorist attacks on US soil ignited two wars and interventions, more bloodshed, the shameful so-called war against terror carried out by the Bush administration, and financial chaos and instability that sparked a spiralling global economic crisis. On the personal level, people lost loved ones while many others lost their homes, jobs, savings and livelihoods. The world has never been the same since the towers fell. What I tell these so-called pacifists is that they should be appalled by the fact that one person was able to reach across the globe and ruin so many lives.
O
ne of my Facebook friends – a journalist – immediately wrote: “How sad when one celebrates the death of any person regardless of how much of a devil he has been. But that is the way the human race is.” Humans are indeed complex animals that often allow their emotions to dictate their initial reactions. There were celebrations in Times Square in 1945 during VE and VJ days, and I am sure there were parties – albeit less-publicized – when it was announced that Hitler had shot himself in his Berlin bunker. But Bin Laden’s death brings a sense of closure to the families of the 9-11 victims and puts an end to the long frustration held by many leaders that the 21st century’s mostwanted madman had for so long eluded capture. Al Qaeda is far from completely defeated but it has been severely wounded, much like ETA has been for the past several years.
I
n Madrid, Bin Laden’s death has sparked some outlandish remarks with the most bizarre coming from regional premier Esperanza Aguirre. She reminded reporters on Monday that Bin Laden never admitted to being the mastermind of the 2004 string of train station bombings that left 192 people dead. Aguirre, who is running for reelection on May 22nd, apparently stands behind her Popular Party’s conspiracy theory that ETA was behind the Madrid terrorist attacks even though countless
intelligence reports, judicial sentences and Al Qaeda videos demonstrated that it was a cell linked to Bin Laden that planned and carried out the bombings. “He acknowledged the attacks in Bali, London, the White House and, of course, the World Trade Centre, but he never recognised the Madrid attacks. Not even the final judicial report says this, so it is still unclear,” Aguirre told reporters.
T
he PP has long claimed that Socialist agents working in the law enforcement institutions at the time somehow manage to throw the investigation focused on ETA, which the Aznar government had initially blamed for the attacks, and instead pinned Al Qaeda as the culprit, which embarrassed the PP and helped Zapatero win the 2004 elections. Seven years later the ridiculous theory has again crept up in this regional election campaign. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to lose a family member in a terrorist attack and be force- fed such stupid statements like Aguirre’s. The Socialists and the PP had a loose agreement not to use ETA as an electoral weapon, but apparently Al Qaeda is a wide-open field.
S
unday night’s celebrations in America were not so much about rejoicing over the death of a person but instead the release of 10 years of built-up disgruntlement over the fact that the world’s number one wanted criminal was still roaming free. These are people who lost loved ones or knew someone who died in the attacks; many were just children at the time the events occurred. They have felt Al Qaeda’s long arm strike right in the centre of their domestic affairs, upsetting their normal lives. There was no way Bin Laden would have been allowed to be taken alive and brought to justice in the United States. Everyone knows, including the pacifists who trawl the social networks, that death to the Al Qaeda leader was imminent and the subsequent jubilation it would bring was inevitable.

Tradition going strong wrtitten by Alan Gomez This year's "RE/MAX Eralia" Easter Tennis Tournament was once again successfully completed this Easter Sunday at Lew Hoad s Tennis Club in Mijas. This long-standing tournament with great tradition has been going on since the 80s. It is open to all families and to many different age groups ranging from 18 to 75 years old with various categories from singles to doubles and mixed doubles. The tournament attracts many foreign visitors with 95 per cent of participants this year coming mainly from the UK, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Australia, Denmark, Norway and of course the local Spanish
nationals who this year were well represented in the female category ages 45 to 65. Eighty five competitors took part and the finals had to go to Easter Sunday to allow for the wet weather conditions. However, all participants enjoyed the week with the numerous traditional and exotic tapas, wine, beer and gala
dinner combined with raffles and prizes for the winners and it was good to see that local businesses still take great pride in sponsoring and participating in the local community spirit even in these difficult economic times. Hopefully they will continue with the tournament and tradition next year.

News Paddy Kelly to lead Tenants Gibraltar faithful to be St Theresa's Church and The Shrine will be celebrating the Triduum to Our Lady of Europe today and tomorrow (Thu). The Mass will be at 7p.m. both evenings at St. Theresa’s Church. On the 5th (Feast) day of prayer at the Shrine the order of the day will be as follows: Rosary at 08.45; 10.45 and 12.45, Holy Mass at 1.15pm, Rosary and Benediction at 4.30pm. Paddy Kelly will be attending on this day. Also on Saturday the 7th, Paddy Kelly will be joining the celebrations leading in prayer and praise. Please take along a flower as an offering on that day. Paddy Kelly (Michael Patrick Kelly) was born in a camper on December 5th 1977 in Dublin, Ireland, as the 10th child into the famous singing Kelly Family, of which he eventually became the musical leader. Growing up with American parents who sought an alternative to the usual modern way of life, he spent most of his life "on the road" living in campers, before spending 7 years on their house-boat which now rests in a museum in Germany. In deference to most people who say, "My home is my castle", as his family's musical career climbed up the ladder of success, so did their homes becomes more glorious to the point when after having purchased a castle in 1998, he could say, "My castle is my home." Paddy knew all the glory of the life of a "rock star". From a camper to a castle, from the streets to the stadiums, at only age 20, he already had everything many only dream of having.
Towards the end of the 90s, through a personal crisis, Paddy took the radical choice to leave everything behind, in order to enter a religious order: the Community of St. John, which he did in 2004. After living the life of a monk for a period of 6 years, but unable to pursue that vocation because of health reasons, he made his musical "come back" with a performance at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in March this year, for which he composed and released his first newly recorded song "Unknown You" in response to a request from the Pontifical Counsel for Culture (the Vatican). Having a great diversity in styles in his compositions, be it folk, pop, rock, reggae, Gregorian or sacred music, and employing most of the lyrics from passages of the Bible, he calls his work, "mystical music in which I sing of or to God", and that, with a four octave voice. Paddy is currently on the Eurosarium Tour which is a spiritual crusade and geographical journey throughout Europe by which he seeks to promulgate faith, life, hope, love and peace through his music, testimony and prayer at the events he either initiates or is invited to. After Paris and Brussels; Gibraltar, Kosovo, Germany, Poland and Spain are the next upcoming dates corresponding to the "beads" of this Rosary of events, for the churches, peoples and nations of Europe. re-housed Two of the 26 flats at Gavino's Dwelling were rendered unfit for habitation and will require extensive repairs following a fire at the property last Wednesday, April 27th. The tenants of these two flats are being offered alternative accomodation according to Minister for Housing, Fabien Vinet. Another four families were affected by smoke damage but have been allowed back into their flats after staying at the Bristol Hotel at the government’s expense. No other flats were affected. All the flats in the building underwent extensive repairs two years ago.
Bus crash due to drink Two people were arrested last Saturday for driving under the influence of alcohol after causing an accident with a bus. The driver of the Gibraltar Bus Company's vehicle was treated for shock after the incident on the Sundial roundabout which left the couple's Mercedes badly damaged and the bus straddling the pavement adjacent to Victoria Stadium. Further investigations are being carried out.

Spain – a surprising home to all that jazz.... spain to the visitor is always linked with feria and flamenco. the music of the country is always associated with the passionate dancing and singing of an art form that goes back centuries.
B
ut there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy ballet, pop-rock and classical music, and what many do not know is that many Spaniards have a deep interest in something perhaps more unexpected – the world of jazz. Up and down the land, in major cities and smaller towns, throughout the year, Spain is firmly on the international map with its jazz festivals that provide a stage for world famous artistes.
S
o for jazz fans there are plenty of opportunities to see some of the greats in action. Some festivals need to be tied in to a holiday to take in another part of the country – and provide a
great basis on which to build a trip to Barcelona or San Sebastian. Others are just a drive or train trip away from here on the Costa del Sol.
A
nd if you are a jazz fan then you have plenty of time to organise a trip to Seville to catch up with some headline acts at the 14th Jazz Festival to be held in the city. This year’s festival features Kyle Eastwood – famous as the son of Hollywood legend Clint but a star in his own right. He will be topping the bill when he visits Seville as part of a hugely busy European wide tour, and will return to the country in July for the Vitoria Jazz Festival.
E
astwood has collaborated creatively with his father – himself a renowned lover of jazz, who took Kyle to the Monterey Jazz Festival when he was a small boy. Aged 12 he sang and acted in Honky Tonk Man, the 1982 movie his father directed and starred in. But music has been the focus of his life, and he has played a part in the scores of eight of his father’s films, including Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, and Invictus, for which he wrote the theme.
E
astwood appears in Seville on Friday May 13th. He departs for Ourense in northern Spain before leaving the peninsula for
France and other European gigs.
T
he Bill Evans Soulgrass Band appears on May 12th – tenor sax Evans made his first professional appearance aged 22 as a sideman in the comeback band fronted by the late and great Miles Davis in 1982 and his mission has been to bring together more traditional jazz instruments with mandolin, banjo and fiddle. During his career he has played with Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and even Mick Jagger.

Age Concern is holding a sponsored walk on Sunday May 8th. There will be 2 walks, both meeting in Sabanillas on the seafront opposite Lidl's. One walk is approximately 14k which will leave at 9.30 am. This walk is designed for people who can cope with hills, rivers, and some quite tricky walking terrain and will take about 4 to 4.5 hours. The short walk will leave at 11.30 and is flat. It goes along the sea front from the Lidl end of Sabanillas to Castillo then crosses the A7 by Duquesa Golf and so back on the land side of the road. A short version of the walk is suitable for wheelchairs.

The walk is about 4.5 km. long and should take about 1.5 hours – there are plenty of cafés on the way for refreshments, or simply bring your own for a beach picnic (weather permitting of course). People can do as much, or as little, of the walk as they wish. To make the walk a success both walkers and sponsors are needed – contact Richard on 639 542 387 for sponsor forms, or pick one up in the Age Concern shop, or leave your details on the office ‘phone – 951 318 234. All of the money raised will go to support the volunteers who work with older people in the community.
Nadfas lecture on Monday NADFAS is holding their next lecture on Monday May 9th starting at 4.30 p.m. It will be an illustrated lecture at the Salon Varieties Theatre, Fuengirola, entitled “Calatrava - Dancing in Valencia”. The lecturer will be Clyde Binfield OBE, PhD, MA. Calatrava is a Spaniard, speaks four languages and has created edifices worldwide. In England he designed a footbridge in Salford, a little masterpiece
of humbling elegance. His admirers claim that he fuses engineering, art, design, architecture and sculpture. This lecture explores his work, from Switzerland through Europe to Canada, but begins in Valencia where he was born and bred, a town which, like Barcelona, has rediscovered its history. Is Calatrava to Valencia what Gaudi is to Barcelona? He might like us to think so. For more information call 952 382 713 or go to the website at www.nadfascostadelsol.org

Classical music concert this week
International Healer & Clairvoyant
Happy 21st Birthday Charlotte
Fuengirola's leading live music venue, the Irish bar Pógs, has live music every night this week, starting tonight, Wednesday 5th, with the ever so popular Alice Reay. Alice, with her fine guitar and exceptional voice, covers diverse and sometimes slightly off beat but nevertheless popular music, anything from Led Zeppelin to the Jackson Five. Thursday night, no introduction is needed for Monkey Tennis's piano man, the fast fingered Michael Dickinson (Mike always provides real entertainment), nor for the laid back dance sound of Amelinde and Sham~Rock on Friday. For another fast and furious all action Saturday
night don't miss the fantabulous Loony Toonz, a Ska and Reggae band fronted by unstoppable Reverend Toon, giving us talented renditions of Jackie Wilson, The Specials, Madness and more, all at the drop of their stylish hats. Ya make me happy, man.... Sunday more talent, an unplugged duo, Simon and Carl as the Acoustixs, and then two more fine guitarist and singers. Dave Mac on Monday (Police, Eagles, Elton John) and finally next Tuesday last but not least everyone's favourite Chicago Jim and if we're lucky maybe a few of his musical mates. Jim will be putting out some mighty fine Motown music and other soulful sounds
from the 60s to present day. Pógs is a great live music venue and yet it is still relatively unknown. Based on a Irish rock pub they host most of the best musicians on the coast, it's large, air conditioned and more than spacious enough to swing a cat or two. There's a dance floor and two bars, serving cocktails, beers and some very nicely chilled Guinness. Pógs provide a VIP discount card to regulars and this week’s offer is: ready - “any spirit and a mixer 3 for €10 if you mention The News”. Easy to find near the PYR hotel just off the Fuengirola sea front, Pógs is open seven nights a week. Written by Pete Woodall

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Hanna BY JOE WRIGHT Starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett
W If you loved director Joe Wright’s Atonement and Pride and Prejudice then you may wonder what he’s been on to turn out this action packed kick-ass movie –a million miles from the drawing rooms and manners of Jane Austin.
But this may well turn out to be one of the best movies of the year, with a cracking Chemical Brothers soundtrack to boot. Hanna (played by Ronan, Oscar nominated for her turn as the young sister in Atonement) is 16 – she is a bright, inquisitive loving daughter but not like any normal teenager. She has the strength, stamina and cunning of a highly trained soldier –
skills taught to her by her ex-CIA widowed father Erik (Bana) who has brought her up in isolation in the wilds of North Finland. She has never been to school and has just an encyclopaedia and a book of fairy tales to read, she has no friends and has no idea what 16-year-old girls get up to. Possibly she thinks they are all like her – a master of attack and self-defence, who has been
turned into the perfect assassin. Her dad is being hunted by a corrupt CIA chief (Blanchett) because he knows too much and he has turned Hanna into the perfect weapon. Finally the day comes when they go their separate ways, with a reunion date and place pencilled in, and it’s not long before Hanna is captured but gets herself out of trouble in spectacular fashion. Its
pacy action set pieces take in Morocco to Europe and there’s no risk of the audience nodding off in this Bourne-like thriller. As a killer schoolgirl Hanna is really cool, but then, so are the rest of the key cast. The critics have mainly been quick to applaud this thriller, which has the virtue of not involving a superhero – the summer starts here!

Super heroes ready to party
The Godfather usually tops the list of all time greats along with a raft of other movies that are regarded as iconic and on the must-see list of every self respecting movie buff. Who could forget the horse’s head scene and the shootout in the restaurant as Michael Corleone begins his Mafia career? Well, a new UK survey says that 30 per cent of those who responded have admitted to fibbing about seeing the Oscar
winner. The Godfather tops the list of iconic films that people claim to have watched, but haven’t. Quoting Casablanca comes naturally...”We’ll always have Paris..” but the Bogart classic comes second on the fib list. The full list is: 1, The Godfather; 2, Casablanca; 3, Taxi Driver; 4, 2001: A Space Odyssey; 5, Reservoir Dogs; 6, This Is Spinal Tap; 7, Apocalypse Now; 8, Good Fellas; 9, Blade Runner; 10, The Great Escape.
Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in Kenneth Branagh’s movie of the same name, has been basking in its good reviews and box office success. The blond actor is in no hurry to hang up Thor’s hammer because in the next two weeks he will start filming the cross-over movie The Avengers, which features a huge cast bringing together a load of super heroes. Robert Downey Jr will appear as Iron Man, Chris Evans reprises Captain America, Mark Ruffalo will appear as the Hulk, Jeremy Renner features as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson will be the Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson stars as
hen it comes to Korean horror movies the first thing that normally comes to mind is lots of long black hair and a creepy coughing, like “The Ring”, “The Grudge” and “One Missed Call” to name a few. However, if you get through all the long black hair you might find yourself with a new Korean movie that came out this year and don’t let the poster put you off, this one is a keeper.
T
his film has restored my faith in new movies and lets me think that good ones are being made, they are just hard to find. There are only three things that may put somebody off this little gem - firstly the poster is pretty naff, but who spends time looking a movie poster? Secondly it’s in Korean only so there are subtitles, that said the subtitles do not detract from the movie, and lastly it’s just over two hours long, but it will have you on the edge of your seat, as this movie is a rollercoaster ride.
T
Nick Fury. The movie is slated for a May 4th release next year and will no doubt feature a heavyweight cast of villains for our heroes to squabble over.
he title, “I Saw the Devil”, is a little misleading as it may make one think that it’s about the occult or demons, but it is more about our inner demons. The plot is a simple one. While stranded in her car and awaiting the tow truck, Joo-Yun is abducted and subsequently murdered by a serial killer. At her funeral her fiance Soo-Hyun promises to inflict pain 1,000x worse to the man responsible for her death. When Soo-Hyun tracks down his fiance's killer, a fierce game of cat and mouse begins.
T
his movie is more of a thriller than a horror, even though some of the scenes are truly horrific. What I like the most about “I
Saw the Devil” was that it wasn’t filled with clichés or over the top special effects. It had a plausible story, and that was the scariest thing.

here is also a lot of martial arts type action and Soo-Hyun’s remarkable abilities come as a surprise as we are not immediately made aware of his profession. There is a stark contrast between the stalker and the stalked, the fiancé being clean cut, quiet and stoic in his endeavours as opposed to the killer, an uncouth, dirty ruffian with a face like an unmade bed. These opposites complement each other perfectly and many times their facial expressions speak louder than any dialogue could.
T
he main difference between this horror/thriller movie and the hundreds of others that are churned out on a regular basis, is that this actually leaves you pondering a moral dilemma. It was interesting to watch the character change in our hero as we witnessed what revenge could bring out in a good man. At some points in the film you are forced to question which character actually is meant to be the devil? Should we let our sympathies shift from the persecutor to the now persecuted?
A
ll in all, this is a beautifully photographed film, making it a visual delight and the gore was well done and never gratuitous. Its two hour duration flew by and I was left awestruck, thought provoked and extremely entertained. Do yourself a favour and catch this one. You will not be disappointed.

K. P. Butterworth I expect a lot of Endesa clients have experienced their lack of client service already and now I join them with really big problems with the company myself. On February 17th our electricity meter caught fire and burned. After numerous phone calls some people from a service firm came and disconnected the meter and connected our wires straight to the main line. I expected Endesa to put a new meter in

I had anyway been complaining about the meter for years because sometimes without obvious reason it gave extremely high readings. Have

Monty Python’s Flying Universe My column this week was meant to have been all about the final flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour which was due to launch last Friday.
I
Unfortunately NASA (who couldn’t be relied upon to launch a firework display these days) has scrubbed the launch until next week….again! his was to be the 134th launch of a space shuttle and something as simple as a faulty heater caused a $6 billion rocket to remain stuck to the launch pad like chewing gum stuck to the pavement. You would think that after 133 launches over 30 years they would have learned how to do it by now. here is a funny story going around that when the Russians and Americans finally joined forces in space in the mid 1970s they began showing off their individual achievements to each other. NASA proudly showed off a pen that had cost ¾ million dollars to produce that could write in zero gravity. The head of NASA proudly demonstrated it writing upside down, on its side, ‘and’ he boasted, ‘it can even write underwater!’ ‘Interesting’ said the Russian delegate ‘we use a pencil, it comes in different colours’. ave you ever seen the difference between an American launch and a Russian launch? NASA parades their astronauts in front of the world’s press, they invite the president to press the button and then watch as it fizzles out. The Russians simply light the blue touch paper, stick their fingers in their ears and hope for the best. ounds like something straight out of a Monty Python gag, well as it happens…. t the last minute a friend of mine happened to send me an email with a link to a lovely little ditty written by the Monty Python member Eric Idle and featured in the film ‘The Meaning Of Life’. All of the facts contained in the song are correct so I thought I would write it out here for you. If you would like to hear it performed I have put the link on my website along with the lyrics and accompanied by images from the Hubble Space Telescope. I was very impressed with it and hope that you enjoy it too.

Whenever life get you down, Mrs. Brown And things seem hard or tough. And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft And you feel that you've had quite enough. Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving And revolving at 900 miles an hour. That's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned A sun that is the source of all our power. The sun and you and me, and all the stars that we can see Are moving at a million miles a day In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way Our galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars It's 100,000 light-years side-to-side It bulges in the middle, 16,000 lightyears thick But out by us it's just 3000 light-years wide We're 30,000 light-years from galactic central point We go round every 200 million years And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions In this amazing and expanding universe The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding In all of the directions it can whiz As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure How amazingly unlikely is your birth And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space Because there's bugger all down here on Earth!

CELEBRITY ROYALS
Spain a hit in designer stakes
Diana dresses go under hammer More than two billion people around the world watched the wedding of the decade as Prince William and Kate Middleton married last week – and for many it was impossible to forget that what they were watching was the legacy of Princess Diana. As the Prince glanced sideways at his bride at the alter memories of his mother came flooding back. Television footage reminded us of Diana’s own dress on the day of her wedding to Charles but as iconic in its own way as that Emmanuel designed dress was, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton swept all before her as the fashion world united to applaud her wedding dress, worn to stunning effect by the bride. The bridesmaid dress she designed for Pippa Middleton was equally acclaimed, along with the outfit Kate changed into for the evening celebrations. Kate’s mother Carole Middleton looked supremely elegant in an outfit from Catherine
Walker – Diana’s favourite designer. Walker herself died of breast cancer last year but she has left a fashion legacy that will forever be linked with the woman who made such an impact around the world. And this week the world will have the chance to bid for two Catherine Walker dresses that were worn by the late Princess. Both will be auctioned by Julien’s Auctions, the leading entertainment and celebrity memorabilia auction house. The two dresses worn by Diana will go under the hammer this weekend (May 7th –8th) and are expected to fetch at least $100,000 for charity. The first was worn on a 1992 state visit to India and the embroidered
detail was inspired by the art of that country. The second dress is a flowing blue chiffon gown that Diana wore to the Cannes Film Festival, to a production of Miss Saigon, and in 1987 for a portrait sitting with photographer Terry Donovan. There are other Royal items in the auction, including chairs from the 1937 Coronation of King George VI, and royal documents going back to the days of King George II in 1757. There will be other memorabilia designed to attract huge attention – not least from women who, in their day, were as iconic as Diana. A black cocktail dress and other items of clothing belonging to Marilyn Monroe will go
under the hammer, along with clothing belonging to one of the early stars of Hollywood, Gloria Swanson. The hat worn by Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face is expected to fetch between $2,000-$3,000, and personal memorabilia and letters belonging to Marlene Dietrich and Lucille Ball are also expected to be popular. Mind you, there’s also a science fiction element to the auction so if you are looking for something to put away for your next fancy dress party then make a bid for the original Batgirl costume worn by Alicia Silverstone in the movie Batman and Robin – it’s expected to be one of the most popular pieces.
Summer sun a sorry tale It looks like those irritating twins “Jedward” will be off our TV screens now until they hit the Eurovision Song Contest stage with Ireland’s entry later this month. The X-Factor duo had been starring in a TV ad for comparison website travelsupermarket, which poked fun at holidaymakers who booked their trips through travel agents. The ad showed the twins sitting on sun loungers by a swimming pool with comic Omid Djalili asking them how much they paid for their holiday. One twin claimed to have paid £200 less by using the website – the other twin’s trademark quiff drooped in dismay and he stomped off. But now the Advertising
Standards Agency has agreed with complaints from two travel agents and some members of the public that the ad was misleading. They have ruled that the company must not show it again in its present form. The ASA has also upheld a complaint against Ryanair, the no-frills flight company that recently flew David Cameron and his wife to Malaga for their Granada holiday. The company had run a February-March cheap
winter sun promotion in which advertising showed a woman sunbathing in a bikini. But none of the destinations on offer got to more than 11 to 14 degrees, and the coldest only reached
temperatures of between 0 and 4 degrees. The ASA said the ad was misleading.
The fashion hits and misses came under the scrutiny of millions at Friday’s royal wedding and Prince Andrew’s daughters Eugenie and Beatrice were runaway winners of the title “worst dressed”, with outfits that looked like they were auditioning for the role of Cinderella’s Ugly Sisters at Birmingham Rep and made them an internet sensation. The day belonged to Kate Middleton and her Sarah Burton designed dress. But Spanish designer held their heads up high. Among the fashion hits nominated by style watchers were Spain’s royal family, Princess Letizia and Queen Sofia. Princess Letizia went for the blush tone so popular on the day and looked supremely stylish in her Felipe Varela design. She wore matching blush toned shoes – very much in vogue on the day. Queen Sofia wore Margarita Nuez and was serene in a bold shade of lilac. Her elegant two piece
suit jacket had unusual but eye catching mini-pompom buttons, and she had a colour coordinated hat, handbag and shoes. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s Spanish wife Miriam González Durántez wore a Miguel Palacio polka dot dress topped by a black turban hat with large redorange flowers. It was slightly channelling Carmen Miranda but very much reflected her Spanish roots. The next day proved a big hit for Spanish chain Zara. As William and his bride emerged from Buckingham Palace Kate was wearing a short blue dress that the girl-next-door might wear – literally. It cost just £49.99 from Zara, and the Spanish company’s website was inundated. The dress sold out within minutes. She wore a simple black jacket on top and a pair of black wedge pumps. Sister Pippa left her hotel wearing a £69.99 Zara blazer and white trousers.

New EU rules on herbal medicines New European Union rules have come into force banning hundreds of traditional herbal remedies to protect consumers from possible damaging side-effects of over-the-counter herbal medicines. From now on only products that have been assessed by the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will be allowed to go on sale. Manufacturers will have to prove that their products have been made to strict standards and contain a consistent and clearly marked dose. And to count as a traditional medicine, products must have been
in use for the past 30 years, including 15 years within the EU. They will also only be approved for minor ailments like coughs and colds, muscular aches and pains, or sleep problems. Remedies already on sale will be allowed to stay on the shelves until they reach their expiry date. The regulations will cover widely used products such as echinacea, St John's Wort and valerian, as well
as traditional Chinese and Indian medicines. But safety concerns have focused on the powerful effects of some herbal remedies, as well as the way they interact with conventional drugs. For example, St John's Wort can interfere with the contraceptive pill, while ginkgo and ginseng are known to have a similar effect to the bloodthinning drug warfarin.
la clinica is a holistic and dynamic health clinic with treatments for internal and external wellness
The industry has had seven years to prepare for the new rules after the European Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products was introduced in 2004, but some manufacturers and herbal practitioners have argued the new rules are too onerous for many small producers. A spokesman for the European Herbal and Traditional Medicines Practitioners Association said there would be a significant impact but admitted the rules needed bringing up to date.

Socialise to stay smart Forget those "brain training" products designed to keep your wits sharp, researchers at Rush University Medical Centre in the US have said - just get out there and socialise more instead. They monitored over 1,000 adults with a mean age of 80 (taking part in a wider study into chronic conditions of ageing) who underwent yearly evaluations that included a medical history and neuro-psychological tests. At the beginning of the study all the volunteers had similar mental capabilities, but after five years, the researchers found that the most socially active experienced a decline only 25% of that of the least active. The researchers said by socialising they meant eating out, attending sports events, playing bingo, visiting friends or relatives, or even going to church, rather than becoming wild party animals.

Chernobyl lessons on web With nuclear safety high on the agenda following the tragedy in Japan, the nuclear debate will in future be better informed now that the findings of young people throughout Europe who have studied the effects of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 have been published on a new web platform. Twenty-five years ago two explosions at one of the reactors at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in the Ukraine spread a cloud of radioactivity across Europe. Eustory, a European network of history competitions run in Spain by the Real Maestranza in Ronda (RMR), has commemorated the 25th anniversary of the nuclear
disaster with the launch of a web platform "Chernobyl25.eu" that brings together the findings of 37 young Europeans from 17 countries. In January 2010 Eustory launched the project "25 years after Chernobyl. Paths towards a culture of transnational remembrance", at a seminar that took place over over the course of six
months during which time Eustory alumni examined the effects of the Chernobyl disaster throughout Europe. In the aftermath of Fukushima, participants remembered the nuclear catastrophe at an event last week in the French Dome in Berlin, where the web platform was launched. The website contains the result of work by 37 Eustory winners from 17 European countries, including Spain, Russia, Finland and Italy, who investigated the consequences of the accident and the resulting radiation. "None of the Eustory alumni had any personal memories of the catastrophe," explained Tina Gotthardt, coordinator of the project and the Eustory history academies that take place for winners of the competition throughout Europe. "In their investigations they were confronted with many
different stories from people who actually experienced it.” One of the young people who has taken part is Germán Jiménez from Seville, who won second prize in the Spanish Eustory competition in 2009. "It is important to commemorate the Chernobyl disaster because whether you are for or against nuclear energy you have to know about the potential consequences of a nuclear accident. Fukushima is a case in point," said Jiménez. The project also analysed the information policy of the Soviet government. "When it first occurred the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl was kept a secret by the Soviet government and it was only when radiation levels six times higher than normal set off alarms in Sweden the day after the event that the Soviet Union was forced to recognize the accident.
"Eustory helps us understand history at a personal level. We learn history through interviewing people who have lived it," added Jiménez at the Berlin conference. The current edition of the Spanish Eustory history competition for young Europeans, organized by the RMR in Ronda (Malaga), was launched last September under the title “Local Heroes” and will come to a close on August 15th. The theme invites young people to investigate and research their local histories. Interested teachers and students can read the terms and conditions on the website www.eustory.es. Besides awards of up to 2,000 euros, winners get the chance to take part in history academies throughout Europe.

Europa Day is Monday 9th of May Although not a major celebration, the 9th May was the date chosen during the Milan Sumit of 1985 as The Day Of Europe in recognition of the very first ever move to create an integrated European Union or Federation over sixty years ago in Paris on May the 9th 1950. The idea backed by the British and the Americans was proposed by the French Foreign Affairs minister Robert Schuman in response to the industrial problems of post war Europe and also with strong regard to a potentially new threat to the east, Soviet Russia, who had recently tested their own atomic bomb. The new federation was to lay down a foundation for a lasting peace in Europe, based initially on strong economic ties shared equally between the French, The British and the recently defeated Germans then a country in two halves but still with great significance and potential and in words of Michael Caine still “not a lot of people know that”.

There is a radiant air of charisma and attractiveness surrounding your being and very little effort is needed on your part to initiate changes, as all that you do is amplified. Your chart is telling you that you want a new beginning, you want change to happen and you have the courage and zest to spring into action. Surrounding yourself with acquaintances can only prove to increase your chances of success. The world is your oyster this week. There are no doubts in your mind as to what your priorities are, and you will be able to discern between the urgent and the non-urgent. Good intentions towards others emanate from you and your energy is strong even if at times your judgement can seem a little shaky in certain situations. At times you might do or say things that can be belittling though, so you should watch out if you feel this urge welling up within. Are we dragging our heels this week, Gemini? You have been given the green light but it is as if part of you is still trying to catch up with the concept of “go”. Day by day you will slowly feel more settled, sure of your position and direction as your ruling planet increases its forward motion. By the weekend spontaneity takes over and there are no barriers in the way of you taking off like a rocket, hurtling towards your destination. It could feel at the moment like someone else is always calling the shots and you have been kept in a restless hibernation, banging your head against a brick wall. This week gives you the chance to initiate a new and far better theme for advancement on every level. Energy, progress and passion launch you upward and onward leading doors to fling open in joyous response. If it were ever time to jump in the deep end it would be now – you have had many months of preparation in shallow waters. You will get the emotional kick-start you need in the coming days as barriers that were previously formed slowly remove themselves, making room for the inner you to really shine. Something that you never thought could ever happen, does, and this will ease your mind and alter your current perspective. With a confident footing you move forward into May. Career issues come to the forefront and there may be an opportunity for advancement. There is something going on that only you can make happen - this week you have to rely on yourself, your confidence and your own abilities to reap the rewards. Ultimately you have to take care of yourself, be kind to your needs, make your own choices and take responsibility for them. Someone close to you has your best interests at heart and they can help to keep you well away from stressful situations and problematic decisions, so seek advice but take your own.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
There are various kitchen tips that emerge now and then – all the ones below are very true but how many of us really have the time to be bothered anyway! So, this week, here are a few tips and what you can do alternatively!
Kitchen Wisdom Let’s have a bit of fun this week ● Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of an ice cream cone to prevent ice cream drips. Just suck the ice cream out of the bottom of the cone, for Pete's sake! You are probably lying on the couch with your feet up eating it anyway!
peeled potato and it will absorb the excess salt for an instant 'fix-me-up.' If you over-salt a dish while you are cooking, that's too bad. Please recite with me the real woman's motto: 'I made it, you will eat it and I don't care how bad it tastes!'
● To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes. Buy Maggi mashed potato mix. Keeps in the pantry for up to a year.
● Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks. Celery? Never heard of it!
● When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake. Go to the bakery! Hell, they'll even decorate it for you! ● If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a
● Cure for headaches: take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away. Take a lime, mix it with tequila, chill and drink! All your pains go away! ● Don't throw out all that leftover wine. Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

A great thirst for learning and trying to understand something has come over you, with zest you endeavour to go into depth in a certain subject. This can lead you to ask others a lot of questions as there seem to be chunks of information missing and you may not understand where certain issues are coming from. A short holiday is appealing and a change of scenery is something that you long to experience this week, just to clear your mind and refresh your spirit. The only thing getting in between you and your first step this week will be you, but with as much support as you have, your body will take you there even if your heart and mind are not on board. As soon as you make your move, it will unlock a sea of energy to help propel you forward. Some of those dreams you have held for so long are making there way into manifestation. Be careful not to dwell too much on the faults of others but instead look to their assets.

Look! ¡Mira! Some one recently commented to me that English is so much easier than Spanish. Well, of course it is if you`ve been speaking it all your life. This person continued to complain about the fact that one word in English may need many words in Spanish. If anything, I imagine this makes life easier but I suppose it depends on your point of view. Let's look at some of the different meanings we may come accross with the word "LOOK" I look at the picture - Miro el cuadro I look for the money - Busco el dinero I look after the children - Cuido a los niños Look at, look for and look after obviously mean totally different things so there is a totally different word in Spanish. Simple Facilísimo He looks well - Tiene buena pinta It looks good - Tiene buen aspecto He looks like his father - Se parece a su padre Let me have a look - Dejame ver It looks difficult - Parece difícil Look after yourself - ¡Cuidate! And a wee proverb : Look before you leap - Antes de que te cases, mira lo que haces (literally, before you get married, look at what you are doing. Wish someone had said that to me twenty years ago but that's another story.) Adios amigos.

Back to basics for dad Middleton Just a couple of days after Michael Middleton escorted his eldest daughter Kate down the aisle to marry Prince William in Westminster Abbey, he was back carrying out some gardening chores and mowing the lawn at the family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire. He hopped onto the ride-on mower to manicure the lawns around the country pile. Apparently the Middletons are £250.000 poorer after the event of the year after huge bills for hotel, banquets, outfits and jewellery.

2011 Japanese event gave last year's title runner-up a near four week break in which to have surgery and gain as much fitness as possible for round three in Portugal.
MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo came within four laps of taking his fourth consecutive Estoril victory, from pole, in Portugal on Sunday. It was at that point that the Repsol Honda of Pedrosa, which had been shadowing Lorenzo all race, suddenly pulled out of his slipstream and took the lead into turn one. Pedrosa then unleashed a series of quick laps to pull a three-second victory margin over Lorenzo by the chequered flag, and is now just four points behind the Yamaha rider at the top of the championship. It had been a largely proccessional race once Simoncelli had high sided, as early as turn 4 on lap 1, as he had been one of the quickest all weekend in the dry sessions. Stoner was never on the pace, and Rossi still has a lot of work to do with the Ducati.
New owners for Bristol Cars
Derek lost his legs in an explosion on military service in Afghanistan. To enable Derek to drive the vehicle, it is equipped with a hand control push/pull brake/accelerator, integral indicator switch and a quick release steering ball. Derek was one of the first soldiers to benefit from Help for Heroes’ assistance and is currently in training for next year’s Summer Paralympics in London. Having already achieved a status of fifth in the world for disabled athletics, Derek will be aiming to represent Great Britain in shot put, discus and javelin. Vauxhall’s Motability Sales and Marketing Manager, Hayley Ingram, handed over the keys to Derek at the company’s Luton HQ. Derek said: “I’d like to thank Vauxhall sincerely for the use of this great car. I’m training five days a week now, in addition to attending events for Help for Heroes, so it will certainly get plenty of use.”

operations at Swiss company Kamport, said: "Bristol Cars is a British institution and an important part of our national motoring heritage. Over the next few months we will start to reveal the details of our plans to combine Bristol Cars' tradition and iconic marque with Frazer-Nash's pioneering technology to showcase our cutting-edge electric and range-extended powertrains. "Owners and enthusiasts of the cars should be assured that, even though these are early days in our tenure of the brand, we are committed to providing them and their cars with the highest levels of quality, technology and service".

Westwood wins again Lee Westwood continued his excellent season shooting a final-round 67 to win the Ballantine's Championship in Korea on Sunday. Clinching his second win in a row, after claiming victory at the Indonesian Masters last week, and hopefully silencing many critics who believe he does not deserve his top spot in the rankings, the 38-year-old from Worksop made a crucial birdie on 18 to post the score and set the leaders a clubhouse target of 12 under, and then looked on as his closest competitor, Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, came up 1 shot short. Jimenez could only manage a 71 final round, good enough to take sole possession of second place on 11 under, while Korea's Sang-hyun Park finished in third a further shot back, and American Dustin Johnson finished fourth on nine under. Westwood needed a topfive finish this week to keep the No 1 position in the world rankings. Martin Kaymer, despite not playing this week, would have reclaimed the top
spot if Westwood had finished any lower. It made the win that much sweeter for the Englishman. "It feels great. I must admit it was nerve-racking sitting there watching people play. You never wish ill on anyone but I'm delighted to win. "I've won two weeks in a row before but it's still very special. It's tough to come down off a win and get yourself refocused, but the more experience you get the easier it is to do it." Jimenez was full of congratulations for Westwood, and revealed
that the two had enjoyed dinner together on Saturday night. "We had a nice bottle of red and after dinner I said 'I'll see you in the play-off tomorrow' and it nearly went that way," Westwood added. "Billy (Foster, his caddie) said to me on the sixth or seventh that 11 under will have a chance so that was the figure we were aiming for. "It's tricky out there. It's a difficult course because it goes around the hills and it's difficult to pick the wind up, it swirls a lot.It was very tough and to go around without making a bogey,
five birdies and 13 pars was a special round of golf. "I'm pleased with the way I'm striking it. Billy said you're hitting it straight at every flag, it either comes up a few feet short or a few feet long. I gave myself a lot of chances and now and then a few go in." Jimenez couldn't manage a single birdie on his back nine, and instead had to fight just to save par on both 15 and 17, after finding the sand on both holes. He found a bunker again on 18, and didn't manage to get up and down for the birdie that would have forced the playoff. Westwood reserved high praise for the tournament and the local support, saying: “The fans were very good, very supportive and it just shows the keenness of the Korean public to come out and watch people they have seen on TV. It has been a great week.”
Sir Henry Cooper Another double dies aged 76 for Baptista Sir Henry Cooper, one of Britain's most popular sportsmen, has died at the age of 76. Former European heavyweight boxing champion Cooper had been ill for some time and died at
his son's house in Surrey, two days short of his 77th birthday. London-born Cooper was at his peak during the 1960s and is best remembered for a defeat by Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali, in a nontitle fight at Wembley in 1963. He famously sent Clay to the canvas near the end of the fourth round with his trademark left hook, known as "'Enry's 'Ammer", only for
the American to earn more recovery time when trainer Angelo Dundee said Clay's glove was split. The incident is still a favourite topic of discussion for boxing fans to this day.
Cooper lost when the referee stopped the fight because of his cuts in the fifth round and he lost to Clay again in a world title fight at Arsenal's Highbury Stadium in London in 1966, again when cuts forced the referee to step in, (cuts to his face were one of Sir ‘Enry’s’ biggest foe). Twice voted Sports personality of the year, he was awarded an OBE in 1969 and knighted in 2000.
Malaga 3 - 1 Hercules After a great 3 points away at Racing Santander last week, Malaga were looking to cement their place in La Liga with another three points. The game started at a frantic pace and it was Hercules who shocked the large home crowd in as early as the 4th minute with Valdez heading home well. But their lead only lasted for 2 minutes, Baptista headed inside the near post at the other end following Duda's excellent cross. 1-1 and only 6 minutes played. Valdez missed a sitter for Hercules and Rondon did the same at the other end, shooting wide when it looked easier to score. The half ended and the teams went in all square. The second half continued in the same vein as the first half had finished but after 66 minutes Fritzler for Hercules was sent off for a second bookable offence after hauling down Rondon on the edge of the box. Following the sending off the referee gave a free kick but his assistant gave the penalty insisting the foul happened
The 2010 winners Benavista Meerkats
2011 “Fab Fours” Summer League There was no change to the successful format of 2010 with each team playing one game of Fours over 8 ends, before the players split into Pairs for a further game of 10 ends. With 2 points being awarded for a win, and 1 point for a drawn game, there are 6 points available in each match. In the event of tie on points, shot difference is the determining factor to identify the Champions. Last year’s defending Champions, the Benavista Meerkats, were convincing winners on that occasion and they were able to field the same four players in defence of their title. Unfortunately they were unable to play on the opening day against the Santa Maria Pirates due to the inclement weather. This provided an opportunity for the other two teams to establish an early lead. In good Pirate fashion the
Buccaneers broadsided their opponents in the Fours 1-14, but the Benamigos quickly regrouped and gave a good account of themselves in the Pairs before going down, 811 and 8-9, the Buccaneers getting the 6 points. All teams descended on Benavista for the second match in the series on April 28th. Could the Buccaneers maintain their excellent start and would last year’s Champions start their campaign with a win?. The Meerkats won their match against Benalmadena Benamigos 5-1. In the other match Buccaneers played Santa Maria Pirates, with the pirates winning 1-5. Fixtures for Thursday May 5th: Benamigos Vs Pirates Start time10.30; Buccaneers Vs Meerkats start 14.00. Rondon put the home side in front after 72 minutes, when he climbed above two defenders to head into the corner from Eliseu's cross and three minutes later, the unmarked Baptista powered a diving header past Calatayud from another Eliseu cross to make it 3-1. This was an emphatic win for Malaga in the end, and gives them a valuable three points towards climbing away from the relegation zone.

Sports Swift’s perfect Swiss timing Ben Swift sprinted to his fourth victory of the season as Team Sky rounded off the Tour de Romandie in perfect style on Sunday. The 23year-old from Rotherham again got the better of Óscar
Freire (Rabobank) in a bunch finish at the end of the fifth stage from Champagne to Geneva, with Davide Vigano (Leopard Trek) in third. The
triumph was the latest in a memorable season for Swift, who took two stages at the Tour Down Under and one at Castilla y Leon. And it came after excellent work from his teammates who were to the fore along with overall winner Cadel Evans’ BMC Racing squad to make sure the field was together when it mattered. Swift told www.teamsky.com: "The team was fantastic; everybody was there in the closing stages. It was going so fast and was a brilliant effort from everyone." Higgins wins his fourth world title John Higgins came from behind to beat 21-year-old sensation Judd Trump 18-15 and clinch his fourth World Championship crown at the Crucible. The 35-year-old Scot was outplayed on the first day as Trump fired in two centuries to build a 107 lead. Breaks of 104 and 99 put Trump 12-9 up, but a costly missed blue saw Higgins pounce and take five straight frames. Trump made it 14-14 and trailed 16-15 but Higgins took the next and sealed it with a

boasted high-class snooker throughout the four sessions. Higgins, 'The Wizard of Wishaw', has been far from at his best during the tournament but his sheer grit and tactical nous proved enough to thwart the potting talent of the spiky-haired Trump. TV Pundit and former world champion Steve Davis said: "Judd Trump lit up the World Championship but John Higgins has gone away with the spoils. John is the greatest player I have ever seen and he thoroughly deserved to win. I think only John Higgins could have beaten Judd Trump today. "As for Judd...
