Telefonica may find itself taken to court by angry customers seeking compensation after a fire at a telephone exchange plunged the Costa del Sol into communications chaos for four days. The blaze at the exchange in the Huelin district of Malaga broke out on Friday night and it is believed to have been caused by a bolt of lightning. It left around 90,000 people in the capital, along the coast and inland without a telephone line or internet connection, and as of yesterday (Tuesday), 10,000 were still waiting to be reconnected.
Businesses, shops, hotels and holiday companies lost thousands of euros because they were not able take money from credit cards or deal with
customer inquiries, while people who were housebound through illness or disability were cut off from the world. The blaze also blacked out the
Traffic Authority, the NIE and passports departments at Malaga's provincial police headquarters and the University of Malaga. Users

What a big change in the weather - and long may it last - we’ll be able to get the garden done, dry the washing and walk the dogs without bringing half the campo home on the bottom of my feet. In a months time I’ll be moaning about the heat and wishing it would rain again, I expect! last week saw the local “grua” man’s tow truck parked by the town square up here in coin. There was a big sheet over it saying “Pagame clavijo” (pay me and the name of the local mayor) and stated that he was going on hunger strike until he had been paid by the local council for all the cars he had towed away on their behalf. He told The news that he was owed thousands and wanted his money. As it happens, the local council still owes us just over €460 for advertising they ordered and got almost two years ago ! While I think that if you do a job for a price that has been agreed on, you should certainly get your bills paid - and on time, not two years hence - I bet there were a few people whose cars had been towed in the past who were having a quiet snigger. His truck wasn’t there on Monday and we understand that he was paid on Saturday - it just goes to show that a silent and peaceful protest sometimes works. Hmmm....wouldn’t have anything to do with the elections coming up, would it?? not that I’m a cynic you understand! Have a good week.

Spain and Morocco reconciled King Juan Carlos ended his five day visit to Morocco on Monday with a two-hour visit of condolence to Marrakesh, where a suicide

Spanish crisis pushing out immigrants Immigrant labour from Latin America and Africa helped fuel Spain's economic boom, but today the unemployment rate for immigrants is 32 per cent – more than 10 per cent higher than the average national rate. As a result, many lost their residency permits after they lost their jobs and now face expulsion. The government has not issued any figures, but the Catholic charity Caritas has reported a sharp rise in the number of people it describes as "suddenly irregular" using its services. It estimates up to 800,000 people could be affected. Now, with local elections this month, and unemployment the voters'
biggest complaint, Caritas fears that that immigrants are becoming a scapegoat. A spokeswoman said there had been a rise of xenophobia and racism and Caritas is urging public and political figures to run sensitivity campaigns to maintain social cohesion. Instead, police identity checks on immigrants are on the increase, even inside Caritas soup kitchens, and a spokesman for the country's biggest police trade union admits police

Anti-smoking law under fire Carrying posters that read “this anti-smoking law is ruining us”, hundreds of businessmen from the hospitality sector marched through the centre of Madrid on Monday, demanding talks with the government aimed at making the law more flexible, in line with most other European countries. The law, which came into effect on January 2nd, bans smoking in all public places, replacing the one that allowed smoking in bars smaller than 100 m2 and in specially adapted sections of restaurants and hotels. The organisers had tried to make the march more attractive, adopting the style of Berlin's Love Parade. As a result, the march was accompanied by three buses flying multi-coloured balloons and music by Shakira and Juanes. The National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking
counter-attacked, saying the law had not had a negative impact on the hospitality sector. The deputy president of the Spanish Hospitality Federation, José Luis Guerra, replied: “It must be that we're here because we like marching, leaving our businesses unattended.” He then produced figures from the most recent Active Population Survey, which showed that in the first three months after the law came into force, 53,200 jobs were lost in the hospitality sector. The president of the Federation, José María Rubio, said it had been
decided to hold the march just a few days before the regional and local elections on May 22nd in the hope that the politicians would hear their complaints. He said: “When the political parties attack us, the least we can do is defend
ourselves. They voted for the law in Parliament and now we'll vote on May 22nd.” He said the members of the Federation realised that the days of being able to smoke anywhere would never return, but he pointed out that similar laws in

Map of mass graves published The map of mass graves from the Civil War and the Franco era which was published last week shows more than 2,000 sites, of which only 250 have been opened so far. The map, which has been posted on the internet, is based on information provided by historical memory associations in regions governed by the Socialist Party – regions governed by the Partido Popular had refused to participate in the project. The remains of just over 5,407 people have been recovered since 2000, when the government of José Maria Aznar allowed excavations to go ahead. Of these, 2,840 were found in a single grave at the San Rafael cemetery in Malaga, generally considered the biggest mass grave in the country. Rubalcaba told a press conference that the government had decided not to dig up the remains of Republicans buried at the Valley of the Fallen the vast mausoleum outside Madrid built by Franco to mark his victory. He said the forensic team
sent by the government to examine the remains had concluded that the bones are mixed up and so severely decomposed that it would be impossible to identify them. The Valley of the Fallen contains the remains of 33,847 people, of which 21,317 were positively identified. Sr Rubalcaba has asked the representatives of all political groups in parliament to put forward proposals on what to do with the Valle de los Caídos. He said the government was in favour of turning it into a memorial for all the Civil War dead and that a committee has been convened to decide if Franco's remains should stay there.
An agent of Barcelona's Mossos d'Esquadra has reported two Guardias Urbanos, the equivalent of the Guardia Civil, for refusing to speak Catalan to him when they flagged him down for reckless driving. They had seen him zigzagging on his motorbike among cars at a busy roundabout, forcing one of them to brake sharply. When they finally caught up with him after a car chase, they informed him in Spanish of their reasons
for stopping him. When he told them that he only spoke Catalan, he alleged they replied: “This is Spain and we will speak Spanish”. The Guardias claim he reacted violently to being stopped and told them they were fascists. He accused them of repressing the Catalan language and said they were a disgrace to the police of Catalonia. The Mosso reported them to his superior, who brushed off his complaint. As a result, he decided to take the matter to court.

Students look abroad Seven out of ten university students would be prepared to live in another country if that was the only way they could get a job, according to the latest University-Society Barometer. Most would prefer a European country, especially Britain, Germany, France and the Scandinavian countries. Eight arrested in stoning death
Several hundred people are feared to have drowned off Libya, after a boat carrying some 600 refugees trying to reach Europe broke up at sea last Friday. The UN's refugees agency, UNHCR, said migrants arriving on the Italian island of Lampedusa had reported seeing the boat carrying some 600 people foundering shortly after leaving the port at Tripoli. If confirmed, this would be one of the largest accidents so far involving migrants leaving North Africa for Europe, often in unseaworthy boats. A UNHCR spokeswoman said it appeared that hundreds of people were missing bodies were seen floating in the sea and those of 16 people, including two babies, have been washed ashore. She said it was
unclear whether anyone was looking for the missing people, but that Nato was not involved in the operation. The UNHCR has said all ships using the Mediterranean should be ready to assist such vessels, as thousands continue to flee North Africa in inadequate boats. Meanwhile, Nato has denied claims that its naval units left dozens of migrants to die aboard another boat in distress, which reportedly was adrift for more than two weeks after running out of fuel. On Monday, UK media reported that 61 of the 72 people on board the boat died of hunger or thirst,
despite being spotted by a military helicopter and the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. The passengers had made contact with a priest in Italy, Father Mussie Zerai, who confirmed that he had alerted Italian coastguards, who said they would take action. But he lost contact with the boat when its phone battery went dead. Nato said in a statement that only one aircraft carrier was under Nato command around that time, the Italian ship Garibaldi, which was operating over 100 nautical miles out to sea. "Therefore, any claims that a Nato aircraft carrier spotted and then ignored
the vessel in distress are wrong," the statement said. At least three other boats have been reported missing in the Mediterranean. In a separate development, UN aid chief Valerie Amos has called for a pause in hostilities in Libya to help ease the humanitarian crisis. Baroness Amos told the UN Security Council that Misrata, the only rebelheld city in western Libya, was in a dire state and short of food and water. Three-quarters of a million people have fled Libya since an uprising began against Col Muammar Gaddafi's rule.
Police arrested eight people after a mob of about 200 stoned to death a young couple who had a love affair which met with their disapproval. The accused include the parents of the woman, a student who had fallen in love with her

Donilon (pictured), demanded on Sunday that Pakistan let American investigators interview Osama Bin Laden’s three widows in an effort to find out how he could have been hiding near Islamabad for years before he was killed by commandos last week. The United States government also wants to know to what extent, Pakistani government,
intelligence or military officials were complicit in hiding Bin Laden. A bidding war looks like breaking out over the future of the former aircraft carrier Ark Royal as a number of interested buyers were last week being shown around the decommissioned warship. Investors from Gibraltar were one of 17 potential bidders to visit Portsmouth Naval Base to tour the iconic vessel, which is up for sale after being axed in Government spending cuts. Their plan would be to turn the ship into an exhibition celebrating the history of the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Navy and make her a key tourist attraction for tourists visiting The Rock. Ben Marr, of the Gibraltar based company Fairhomes was quoted in the UK media as saying: ”We are seriously looking at a possible plan to bring HMS Ark Royal here to put her on display to the several million visitors who come to The Rock each year. We hope the Ministry of Defence will be supportive of our proposals. We certainly know the Great British Public will be.” The ship is listed on the
Ministry of Defence’s auction website and potential buyers have to register their interest on edisposals.com and submit outline plans before they can tour the ship, which was decommissioned after 25 years of service. Defence chiefs were reported as backing a plan to keep her in London to be used as a floating helipad but that seems to have run aground - the London Assembly headed by mayor Boris Johnson is believed to have indicated that the London Plan does not allow for more heliports. Interest is now hotting up before the bidding deadline of 10am on June 13th. Most firms interested in the ship are understood to be scrap metal merchants and sister ship HMS Invincible was towed
to a scrapyard in Turkey after being sold in the internet sale. Other ideas being floated for Ark Royal include using it as a base for security forces at the 2012 London Olympics, or being used as a night club or school in China. Ben Marr believes it would be a “national disgrace” if Ark Royal followed the Invincible to the scrapyard. He believes she would be a big hit for tourists, and Fairhomes is reviewing the figures in its bid. In the meantime, the name Ark Royal may not die out – it may be passed on to a a new aircraft carrier being built for the navy. The current ship is the fifth to carry the name. The first saw battle in 1588 against the Spanish Armada.
Princesses to be stripped of protection Prince Andrew’s daughters Beatrice and Eugenie hit the headlines and became an internet sensation after their royal wedding outfits – including the now famous hat – caused gasps of horror and amusement around the world. The week has not improved for the pair. It has been revealed that they are to lose their round-theclock police protection, which costs the nation £500,000 each year, as part of a review by Scotland Yard into security arrangements for the Royal Family. In future the Princesses will only be given protection when they attend official events on
behalf of the “Firm”. Their father had argued strongly for the continued presence of protection officers, believing that his daughters should be treated differently to other minor royals, because they have HRH status. But their cousin Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne, has no protection and arguably has a higher profile. Observers believe that the recent controversy surrounding Prince Andrew has not helped his case. Nor has media coverage of his daughters leaving nightclubs in the early hours with protection officers in tow. The Queen is also believed to have made it
clear that the princesses should pursue their own careers after university, rather than go on the royal payroll – the Civil List – to be paid as working members of the Royal Family, as their father had hoped. Eugenie, 21,is studying at Newcastle, and her sister Beatrice is at London University. They each have two protection officers operating a 24 hour service at a cost of £250,000 per princess. Their father had insisted on them receiving full protection although police had assessed them as low risk targets. The annual cost for protection for the Royal Family is £50 million.

Iron Lady gets armoured car due to new security measures Former prime minister Margaret Thatcher has had her security stepped up amid fears that she could be a target for Irish republican terrorists marking the 30th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strikes. Baroness Thatcher’s security had been downgraded in recent years as the 85-year-old’s health took its toll, and prevented her from making speaking engagements and public appearances. She had to decline her invitation to the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. But the Metropolitan
Police have apparently put in place a security upgrade, which includes a new armour-plated government car, because of fears that the anniversary of the hunger strikes could make her vulnerable to increased activity by dissidents. The former PM refused to make any concessions to IRA and Irish National Liberation Army inmates of the Maze Prison, 10 of whom starved themselves to death. The move comes in the wake of recent republican terrorism in Ireland – a police constable was killed –and a perceived threat to the mainland.
The most famous of the hunger strikers was Bobby Sands. He was the first to die and the anniversary of his death was last week. Mrs Thatcher refused to recognise the acts of the prisoners as political. During her premiership her close friends Airey Neave and Ian Gow were both killed by terrorist bombs under their cars and she herself survived the attack on the Grand Hotel in Brighton in 1984, during the Conservative Party Conference, in which five died and many were injured.

Moseley loses court case Ex-formula One boss Max Moseley has lost his case against newspapers in a court involving seven judges in the European Court of Human Rights. He was asking that tougher privacy laws be implemented and that newspapers should give celebrities and famous people prior warning of what was going to be printed about their private lives, giving them time to seek a court injunction against certain facts being published. However, the court ruled that the UK system already had sufficient protection for individuals, declaring: "The European Convention on Human Rights does not require media to give prior notice of intended publications to those who feature in them."

Tow truck driver goes on hunger strike Tow trick driver Antonio García went on hunger strike in Coin's central square, Plaza de la Villa, to support his demand for payment of money owed to him by the Ayuntamiento. The council ran up a bill of €90,000 with his family's company, Gator, before switching to another company based in Marbella. He told reporters his father had bought the tow truck
specially to work for the Coin council, which had a contract with them for two years. “They didn't even give us a chance to extend it, as one of the clauses stated,” Sr Garcia said. “So now we have no
money and no work for the tow truck.” Sr Garcia said the council wanted to pay off the debt in two parts but he was pressing for a single payment. However, by Friday it looked as if some agreement had
been reached, as Sr Garcia and his tow truck decamped from the square. Mayor Gabriel Clavijo said the contract, which had been put out to tender, was for two years only and the council
had decided not to renew it after receiving a negative report from the Local Police on the company's work. He insisted the council had been paying off the debt at the rate of €16,700 a month and that
only this month's payment was outstanding. Sr Clavijo insinuated that the Partido Popular was behind the protests because “it had insisted on bringing up the matter at council meetings”.

A Malaga court has sentenced a 61-year-old man to 18 months in jail for threatening two women doctors at the Hospital Clinico last December. They had given him a clean bill of health, which he did not agree with. The man told Dr Maria C.P.R. that he was going to have her struck off the medical register and “that she would remember this”. She ordered him out of the
building. As he left he ran into another doctor who he called a s**t, and said he would be waiting for her when she finished work. The prosecutor had also called for a restraining
order, which the judge denied. A court official said more sentences like this one were to be expected because incidents of violence by patients were on the increase.

The founder of Save Our Homes (SOHA), Phillip Smalley, has decided to take the plunge and will run in the May 22nd elections for the Partido Andalucista in La Viñuela in the Axarquia. When he built his home there – with a licence from the local council nine years ago he thought he had nothing to look forward to but an active and interesting retirement. Then he found out his home, and hundreds of others, were illegal, according to the Junta de Andalucia. That’s when he founded SOHA. Potatoes to help Cameroon A farmer in the Axarquía has donated 1,500 kilos of organic potatoes to the Centro de Documentación para la Paz (Peace Documentation Centre, Ahimsa) to help raise funds for a cooperation project in Cameroon. Phone and internet blackout causes chaos No matter how big the financial loss suffered, most of those hit will receive less than one euro for each day they were without service. The Royal Decree of May 2009 approved the Chart of Rights for Users of Electronic Communications
Services, which included compensation for each day a consumer was without service for reasons beyond his control. In the case of “Acts of God”, users would be reimbursed the €15 monthly rental for their fixed lines at the rate of €0,50 per day without
service. Consumer protection group Facua has said that Telefonica will classify last Friday's blaze as an Act of God, caused by lightning. It has also calculated that 90,000 users were cut off for 24 hours, which was reduced to 45,000 on the second day. By Monday
night, around 10,000 were without service and Telefonica calculated that everyone should be back on line by Wednesday. Facua has reminded consumers that if they are not satisfied with the compensation paid, they can take the matter to court.
Gay couple files Fighting drug dens a losing battle complaint A gay couple made a formal complaint to police in Seville after they were stopped from dancing traditional sevillanas together in one of the many casetas at the city's April Fair, which ended on Sunday. The couple said that when one of the women realized they were gay, she ordered the group that was
playing music to stop. She and her husband, who was the "president" of the caseta, approached them to tell them "they could not dance, that they were in a respectable caseta, and that two men could not dance together." The couple were then invited to leave the tent.

A show to remember Photo exhibition success
Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools celebrated their twelfth year in Spain and Gibraltar recently with another fabulous show, this time at the Palacio de los Congresos, La Linea de la Concepción. The three schools combined their considerable talent in a non-stop extravaganza which featured musical and dramatic excerpts from such favourites as ‘Grease’ and ‘Bugsy Malone’, punctuated with more unusual items from theatrical gems like ‘Snoopy the Musical’ and ‘Peter Pan’. It also kicked off and ended with recent chart hits which gave it modern flavour and provided a varied and uplifting evening of entertainment. The cast comprised pupils aged between four and sixteen along with several of their talented teachers and a special guest appearance by the velvet-voiced Andrew Kennedy who is best known for his recent West End roles in Grease, Rocky Horror and The Rat Pack
and took the role of Teen Angel and also performed a crowd pleasing solo with ‘Sway’. The stars of the night were undoubtedly the youngsters and having had the pleasure of being in the audience for previous annual showcases, I was truly taken aback at the progress being made by these talented stars of the future. News More sand for the beaches Sand replenishment works are being carried out on beaches prior to the start of the summer season. A sand suction dredger will gather sand from the bottom of the sea and put it on the beaches and while the work is being carried out beaches will either be closed or have restricted access. Catalan Bay's replenishment was due to be completed yesterday and the beach re-opened. However, a 50 metre section of the bay will be
closed from the 18th to the 20th of this month to allow the contractor to remove his equipment. From yesterday until May 17th it will be the turn of Sandy Bay. A Gibraltar Government spokesman said: “The public are kindly requested to stay clear of the works area as large machinery will be employed and, immediately after the placing of new sand, there will temporarily be areas
where the ground will be extremely soft and potentially dangerous. The contractor will avoid causing noise disturbance during the silent hours. This operation is intended to maximise the usage of Catalan Bay Beach, and to recreate Sandy Bay for the summer season. There is of course the risk that storms will destroy part of the work to be done although it will be possible to top up any sand lost in that way.”
Spanish warship orders boats to leave British waters When ships anchored two miles off The Rock were hailed by the Spanish Navy corvette Atalaya in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters telling them they were in Spanish waters and had to leave recently, they contacted the Gibraltar Port Authority and refused to leave. The Gibraltar Government has issued a furious response to the Spanish authorities saying that it was “a direct and most serious challenge” to British sovereignty which the UK cannot permit or allow to occur. Port Officers immediately sent the signal to all ships stating: “You are anchored in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters and Spanish Warship P74 has no jurisdiction over these waters, please remain at anchor” and sent an inflatable to intercept the Atalaya with two radio messages telling them that were in British waters and must leave immediately. The Gibraltar Government said: “This most serious incident explodes the myth

There is now ongoing questions as to why the Royal Navy's vessels took so long to respond to the incident.

ocal elections may not seem very important in the big picture but they reveal quite a bit about behind-thescenes machinations that the government keeps from the general public.

ast time around – and this time again, from the looks of it – the spectre of ETA hovered in the background.
y May 2007, it was obvious that the truce declared by the Basque terrorist group in March 2006 was getting nowhere. Zapatero had seized upon the initiative to ask Parliament for permission to open a “peace process” with ETA, and received it. However, we now know that the Socialists had been holding occasional talks with ETA from as far back as 2001, when Zapatero – as leader of the opposition – was signing the anti-terrorist pact with the ruling Partido Popular aimed at weeding out all the smaller Basque parties that sympathised with, or were façades for, ETA. Zapatero, as usual, was not letting his right hand know what his left hand was doing.
O
n December 29th 2006, when asked how the peace process was going, Zapatero said “satisfactorily but it will be much better by this time next year”. The following day, ETA blew up the fourstorey Terminal 4’s car park at Barajas airport, killing two men. That effectively put an end to the peace process on the government’s side.
I
t also left Zapatero and several ministers with egg all over their faces because of jailed ETA terrorist Iñaki De Juana Chaos – whom they had described in January 2006 as a “bloodthirsty killer” when it became known he was about to get out of prison after serving only 17 years of his 3,000 year sentence for the murder of 25 people in Madrid in the mid-1980s. But that was before ETA declared its ceasefire. After staging two hunger strikes, at the end of that year the government decided “for humanitarian reasons” to let De Juana serve out the 14 months that remained of a new sentence (three years for threatening certain government officials in articles written in prison) at home under police supervision. To justify this leniency, Zapatero insisted the bloodthirsty killer now agreed with the peace process. In fact, to this day De Juana has not expressed one word of regret for his murderous actions.

espite the Barajas bombing, the government did not revise its attitude to De Juana Chaos. But that
was before the May 2007 local election and regional elections, which the government thought it would win big. In fact, in the total tally the Partido Popular got 156,000 more votes than the Socialists, mainly because the latter had ignored the polls that indicated time after time that the majority of Spaniards did not agree with the peace process. They wanted ETA annihilated once and for all and for good. While Zapatero and his pals were working this out, on June 5th ETA declared an official end to the March 2006 truce.

apatero reacted quickly – for once. De Juana was sent back to jail to complete his sentence, and the National Court ruled that he would be force fed if he went back on hunger strike. ETA sympathisers - especially its political wing, the banned Batasuna Party – objected loudly, but the government had a nasty surprise lined up for them too. Batasuna leader Arnaldo Otegi was due to appear in court in Madrid that same week on a charge of inciting terrorism. He already had a suspended sentence hanging over his head, which meant that if he was found guilty of the second charge he would go to jail. Otegi was confident he would beat the rap but as he was preparing to speak to a Batasuna rally later that week, the police turned up at his home in Bilbao and hauled him off to jail, where he still is. De Juana went to Belfast after finishing his sentence and is currently on the run from both the Spanish and North Irish authorities.

n this year’s replay, ETA declared a “verifiable truce” in January. Batasuna and Basque left-wing parties formed a coalition under a new name which was first disallowed by the Supreme Court, then allowed by the Constitutional Court, to participate in this month’s local elections. When the coalition’s supporters heard the news, many of them started shouting “Independence” so we can see where all this will lead if the coalition ends up dominating some 40 local councils, as expected. Meanwhile, the polls once again show that a majority of Spaniards were against allowing the coalition to run, and the police and Guardia Civil insist that it is just a front for ETA and obeys the terrorists’ orders.

he coalition may not affect voting in the Basque Country but it's just one more gripe to add to the long list of gripes for people living in the rest of Spain. If the Socialists get the beating that the polls predict, what will Zapatero's next U-turn be?
o why is Bildu allowed to run and Sortu isn’t? The Constitutional Court apparently doesn’t have a clear answer, even though last Thursday in a divided decision it approved the 254 candidate slates that were drawn up by the Basque “abertzale” radical left for the May 22nd elections. According to the Attorney General’s Office, there is little difference between Bildu and Sortu. Both organisations, prosecutors say, are strategies drafted by ETA to get its supporters in public office in the Basque Country and Navarre where voters later this month will elect mayors and councillors in municipalities across the two regions. Sortu, which was grouped in February, was filled with former members of Batasuna, the political wing of the Basque terrorist group, which was outlawed in in 2003. Among those who appeared prominently on the lists were Txema Azkuenaga, a lawyer, who wanted to run in the Bilbao mayoral race, and Aitziber Ibaibarriaga, the daughter of former Batasuna councillor Kepa Ibaibarriaga. When the government successfully challenged Sortu, keeping it from registering as a legitimate party at the Interior Ministry, the abertzale radicals took to Plan B and came up with a coalition, Bildu, in an effort to field candidates.
B
ildu was created through a partnership with two pro-Basque independence but legal parties Eusko Alkartasuna (EA) and extreme-left Alternatiba. Hundreds of Bildu candidates will be running for office later this month. Confidential police reports have concluded that Bildu, just like Sortu, was an idea drawn up by ETA over the past several years to give the terrorist organisation a political voice in Spain’s two northern regions where the criminal group has lost a lot of support over the past decade. ETA is no longer the powerful, feared insurgency it once was. With the help of French and Portuguese authorities, the Spanish government has dealt a series of blows to ETA, arresting five of its military leaders in succession since 2008. Police have also uncovered a string of clandestine caches of weapons and explosives, known as “zulos,” in different parts of Spain and France, and confiscated dozens of records and documents that detail the secret organisation’s innermost workings. As ETA tries to survive on its last breath, members are trying to generate much needed political support. They have lost their international reputation as a legitimate pro-independence movement as most nations have reduced ETA to nothing more than a criminal organisation dedicated to creating havoc and destroying people’s lives without just cause.
I
n early April, Bildu published its lists of proposed candidates, which demonstrated that all, except for two people, have no known past connection whatsoever to illegal parties or
organisations linked to ETA. Because of this, many politicians and jurists supported giving Bildu a chance to create a legitimate coalition and place its contenders on the May 22nd ballot. But the Socialist government, with the backing of the main opposition Partido Popular, was adamant in keeping Bildu from forming. The Supreme Court sided with the government, ruling that Bildu cannot be present on the ballot. But after filing an appeal, the Constitutional Court overturned the justices’ decision last Thursday after lawyers for the new coalition argued that the government was trampling on its members’ rights by not allowing them to run for office.
T
here is still a lot of suspicion over whether Bildu is a genuine front for ETA. But what is even more troubling is the attempt by the opposition PP to use the Constitutional Court’s decision as a campaign weapon. On Sunday, former Prime Minister José María Aznar blamed the Socialist government for allowing Bildu to win its legal battle. Speaking at a campaign rally in Guadalajara, Aznar promised that if his PP party will win next year’s general election “we will once again expel the terrorists from our institutions.” His comments also ignited comebacks from the Socialists who, like their PP opponents, are digressing from the regional and local issues in the race, and concentrating more on matters that should be dealt with on the national stage. Also worrisome is that the Socialists and the PP have broken their informal agreement not to use terrorism as election fodder.
W
ith the two major parties going at each others’ throats on the Bildu issue, it seems inconceivable, but not at all surprising, that the real issues of the May 22nd election – unemployment, infrastructure, social programs – are being overlooked. It is time for the parties to put aside their bickering on a matter that has been dealt with by the courts. As for the Bildu coalition, it will be up to voters to decide whether they believe ETA is behind this group and subsequently it will be the government’s responsibility to remain vigilant should any of its candidates are elected.

ut the sleepy nature of the area is all set to change. The masterplan to build Paramount Studios’ theme park in Murcia was officially unveiled last week, with an expected opening date of 2015.

he park will be situated in an 158 hectare site on the Mazarron/Alhama de Murcia border, about 15 minutes from the pretty beach resort of Puerto de Mazarron. Paramount will use its top rated franchises like Star Trek, Mission Impossible and Shrek to inspire the various themed areas as it takes on Disneyland Paris. The plans also include a number of three to five star hotels, themed shopping malls, restaurants, bars and clubs, plus a huge conference centre and an open air auditorium to take 15,000 people.

Backroom blogger speaks TAPAS do Blithe Spirit Tim Montgomerie is the after dinner speaker for the Costa del Sol Conservatives Abroad function on Friday May 13th at the Tamisa Golf Hotel. He runs the influential Tory blog ConservativeHome and is the founder of the Conservative Christian Fellowship. The CH site offers a running commentary on the Tory high command and a forum for debate for grassroots Conservatives – David Cameron ignores it at his peril. "The internet is
an historic decentralisation of power," said Montgomerie. "If political parties don't listen, they'll be swept away by an internet-based movement." A former Bank of England official and political secretary to the then Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith, Montgomerie set up ConservativeHome in 2005. Its power and influence has outflanked another Tory blogger, Guido Fawkes, who hasn't
set off many fireworks of late. Dubbed the “backroom powerhouse” in an article in the Observer newspaper, he has hinted that he will not be blogging much longer. The crowds were out in force at the weekend for the premiere of the fourth in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which features Spain’s Penelope Cruz for the first time. The movie was unveiled in Disneyland in front of a 2,000 strong audience and 25,000 fans lined the black (yep, not red) carpet in Main Street, to wave at the stars of the show, filmed for the first time in 3D. In the latest outing Capt Jack Sparrow (Depp) and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) are joined by the lovely
Angelica (Cruz) as they embark on the quest to find the elusive Fountain of Youth, only to discover they are pitted in a race with Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Is Jack in love with Angelica, or is she a con merchant using him to find the fabled fountain, as they battle mermaids, cutthroats and zombies along

the way? The two have history – and the sparky dialogue between them shows that they have shared some saucy moments. It’s the first time in the franchise that the movie does not feature Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly. On the other hand, it does feature a fun cameo from national
treasure Dame Judi Dench as a noblewoman who falls under Jack’s spell. Rolling Stone Keith Richards reprises his role as Jack’s father Captain Teague. It’s destined to be a huge draw at the cinema, no matter what the critics say. Spain is showing the movie in advance of UK cinemas.

Arnie to start filming e last picture show
Arnold Schwarzeneggar, 63, has still got what it takes to be a box office draw. He is already lined up for a return to The Terminator franchise but a script has yet to surface. When it does, the movie will be directed by Justin Lin, director of The Fast and The Furious franchise. But come September Arnie will start filming “Cry Macho”, about a retired
horse trainer who goes to Mexico to kidnap a young boy at the request of his former boss. He will reportedly be paid $12.5 million plus 25 per cent gross ticket sales. The movie is being produced by Al Ruddy, who produced Oscar winners “The Godfather” and “Million Dollar Baby”. Arnie has announced a split with wife Maria Shriver.
Cinemas are locked in battle with the big Hollywood movie studios about how soon new blockbusters can be screened on television. Some studios, including Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox, have decided to make films available on pay-television just weeks after their big screen premieres. But cinema bosses fear that film fans will be prepared to wait for a film to appear on television rather than travelling to their local multiplex and paying out for seats. In the UK the Cinema Exhibitors Association, the trade body, fears that even a small impact on admissions could make a
huge difference to the viability of a number of smaller cinema sites and the National Association of Theatre Owners in the US shares those fears. Traditionally cinemas have a four month window, during which time they are the only place to legally be able to see new films. When the window closes studios release films on DVD or pay-TV. But the drop in DVD sales, coupled with the rise in piracy has left studios looking elsewhere to recoup the costs of movie making. More positive voices believe that nothing can replace the cinema experience. You just cannot beat the big screen for a blockbuster movie.

ith an ever active and long living population knocking around, it’s no wonder that senior film heroes are also becoming more visible in plots that might have been impossible to comprehend just a few decades ago.
T
he film ‘Harry Brown’ (2010) has a violent, bloody, gun-slinging, knife wielding drugs-crazed revenge plot that could have been headed up by heavy action figures like Steven Segal, Bruce Willis or Sylvester Stallone in their heydays. Instead, the protagonist of this particular story is none other than the nifty ninja that is Michael Caine. Not the loose limbed mob henchman Michael Caine of Get Carter fame but an ’arthritic, peaceful widower living out his days’ kind of Michael Caine. He was after all 76 when he made the film!
A
s Harry makes use of his military training and the skills he picked up while serving in Northern Ireland, he carves his way through the movers and shakers of the local underworld until he suffers an emphysema attack that sees him hospitalised. The local police investigate claims of a vigilante style attack on the local hoodlums, although all but one officer discount the idea that it could be the hospitalised pensioner that left the trail of bodies around the darkest corners of the estate.

s the menace of scared and armed youths causes tensions on the estate to boil over, Harry finds himself betrayed by one of his friends and faces a fight to the death protecting officers of the law that have been caught up in the escalating violence.
A
lthough the violence in the film is graphic, it is not gratuitous because it IS the story. It is both the implied and actual threat of violence that keeps those living on the estate from using the underpasses and going out at night. Pensioners 1, yobs 0.
W
ge is no barrier to conviction though and when Harry Brown´s best mate and drinking buddy Leonard is killed by a group of local drug dealer thugs, Harry sets off on a course to rid his housing estate of the scum that are terrorising the local community.
ith Harrison Ford celebrating his 69th birthday in just a few weeks. it’s perfectly feasible that the next Indiana Jones film is going to be played by a 70 year old action hero. Harrison Ford himself is quoted as saying that Stephen Spielberg has already decided on a plot line for Indiana Jones’ fifth outing and that if the script is good, he’s happy to don the famous Fedora one more time.

n a series of encounters with local yobs and dealers, Harry exacts revenge for Leonard’s death, spurred on by his own anger at having not been at his wife’s deathbed because the shortcut to the hospital through the underpass was blocked by jeering youths. Presenting himself at a local drugs den, Harry catches them on the back foot as they mistakenly underestimate the abilities of the ex-Royal Marine, who they assume is more likely to be accustomed to drawing his pension, than drawing a gun.
hen veteran actor Sean Connery played Indiana Jones’ father in ‘The Last Crusade’ in 1989 he was actually only 58 and did a lot less running around than Ford did at 65 in film number four, ‘ The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’. The charismatic James Bond actor is only 12 years older than Harrison Ford but as he has already bowed out of Indiana Jones 4, it’s unlikely we’ll see that particular pensioner back in the action hot seat, preferring I suspect, to be gently stirred and not shaken these days.

This is a prime time for you if you use your ingenuity and think outside of the box. Financially this is an excellent time when opportunities abound. Break out of old ruts and routines and look at giving a fresh, new venture a go. Put those ideas into motion - are you waiting for someone to give you permission? I doubt you need to, it is more a matter of you can see what needs to be done, so just check your facts and assume control. You are naturally attuned to nature and the senses and this is an ideal time to use that gift to the full when your sixth sense will be required to steer a ship through choppy waters. The key is it only appears choppy; the real challenge is to remember this and keep moving in the direction you intended. When you reach the edge of the cliff, just close your eyes and take that leap - you will instinctively know how to play the game. Those who go that extra mile and are willing to put in the effort always seem to prevail over those of us who are fickle. There is always someone who will find fault with what someone else does but there are those who ignore the mutterings and carry on resolute and focused. What you sow this week is what you will reap. Instead of juggling the balls, pull them down to earth, stand tall and rooted to the spot, then you will achieve your dream. There is a hot fire under your feet forcing you to increase the speed of your stride, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. Discomfort comes with the territory and it could be hard to keep up with the speed of things. Walking on hot coals may not be something you have ever wanted to do but after a while you will learn the technique required to get to the end without getting burnt. Make conscious choices with your time and energy and get rid of any feelings of doubt. It is up to you to take the lead in a situation that has been dragging on far too long, you are now in a position to make a dramatic difference in a situation that has been getting the best of you. So strike while the heavens are hot - as you are in a powerful position. Someone you care for deeply will respond in kind once you lay an issue to rest - perhaps they have been waiting for you to also be more willing to negotiate. Things are finally getting sorted, Leo. The fastest way to a little more peace is to initiate conversation and extend the olive branch. The smallest well-intended gesture will go far in bridging a certain troubling gap. This week's recipe is light yet filling and with the weather improving, I thought fish would be rather nice for a change. Sea Bass (Lubina) in Spain is relatively inexpensive and can be cooked in a number of ways. This recipe is for pan fried Sea Bass..
Sea Bass with couscous Ingredients:
(Serves two)
● 150gr couscous ● 100ml red wine vinegar ● 2-3 tbsp golden caster sugar ● 100gr shallots, peeled and finely sliced into rings ● 50ml olive oil ● 2 x 200gr fillets sea bass (Lubina) with the skin on ● 100gr peeled smallish prawns ● Zest of 1 lemon ● Small handful flat leaf parsley, chopped ● 1 bunch dill weed, chopped
Directions 1. Put the couscous in a bowl with enough boiling water to barely cover it, put clingfilm over the top and allow to swell somewhere warm for 10 minutes.
down. Cook for 3-4 minutes, gently flip over and cook on the flesh side for another 2 minutes or until the fish is just cooked. Allow to rest in the pan somewhere warm while you finish the dish.
2. In the meantime, in a small pan warm the red-wine vinegar and enough of the sugar to taste pleasantly sweet and sour. When the sugar has completely dissolved add the shallots and allow them to take on the sauce, off the heat.
4. Mix the couscous with the sweet and sour shallots and their liquid and add the brown shrimps, lemon zest and herbs. Mix with the remaining olive oil. Season.
3. Heat a little olive oil in a non-stick pan then fry the seasoned bass fillets skin-side
5. Arrange a pile of the couscous on a plate, top with the sea bass and drizzle with a little more olive oil.

The stakes are high for boy band/man band Blue, tasked with salvaging the UK’s national pride when the boys take to the stage in Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Kate Middleton’s wedding dress became the most famous garment on the planet when it was seen by billions on television – and it has inspired a Chinese dress factory to turn out copies for just £200. The Muyi Wedding Dress Company is based in Suzhou – the city is home to well over 1,000 factories who specialise in wedding gowns. The Muyi factory owner, 24-year-old Yang Lifei, said that Chinese brides wanted to feel like royalty. The £40,000 Sarah Burton original had intricate lace work hand-stitched by artisans at the Royal College of Needlework, using traditional techniques dating back to the 1820s. The Chinese version
features factory made lace costing just £1 per metre, an eight foot train and a close fitted bodice. Zhao Tingting was the first Chinese bride to wear the dress, just 36 hours after the royal nuptials. Groom Wang Jinwang wore an imitation scarlet Irish Guards uniform like that worn by Prince William. Kate’s dress won plaudits around the world – but Princess Diana’s wedding
dress continues to draw huge crowds. Thirty years after her wedding to Prince Charles the dress with its 25 foot train is touring the world. it has been seen by more than a million people and has raised around £1 million for charity. The dress and train stand on a mock staircase inside a huge glass display case (pictured above), and it has travelled thousands of miles. Its permanent home is at Diana’s family seat Althorp House, where her body is
buried and where her brother Earl Spencer has created an exhibition to commemorate her life. The dress is owned by Princes William and Harry, and on the day of William’s wedding it drew sell-out crowds in Kansas City. It’s now in Vancouver, Canada, as it continues its tour. Diana’s engagement dress was sold last year for £192,000 but the wedding dress is deemed to be priceless.

The song “I Can” has not been getting much airplay from the BBC – which finds and promotes the UK entry as well as screening the event, and Blue fear that this will not have helped their cause. To counter the lack of airplay the boys have been on a Europe wide charm offensive. Blue reformed after a six year break, and the one time huge hits in Europe are tipped at 7/1 by bookies and are second favourites behind France. All eyes will be on them to see if they can do better than last year’s UK performance. Josh Dubovie’s “That Sounds Good To Me” didn’t sound so good to voters. It scored just 10 points and came last – the third time the UK has finished bottom in eight years. The show is seen by 130
million people and presents Blue with a huge showcase to relaunch their career. Band member Antony Costa said: “If we get a top five place it will be amazing.” But what happens if it’s the dreaded “nul points”. “We’re emigrating,” said Antony. All the boys have been hard at work in the gym buffing and toning – and if the group pull off a win then fans can expect them to bare all to celebrate their success. Ireland’s entry are the XFactor twins Jedward, not actually noted for being that good at either singing or dancing. They have to get through the semi-finals before the weekend to stand a chance of winning. The sound of BBC presenter Graham Norton sharpening his wit can be heard in the distance....

Catherine has made it to No 39 on FHM Magazine’s annual Top 100 of the world’s sexiest females – the only member of the royal family to have made the list. Nation’s sweetheart Cheryl Cole lost her crown to Transformers actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Cheryl has taken the No 1 slot for the past two years but this year slumped to 12th. A spokesman for The Stroke Association said a sudden surge in high blood pressure can increase the likelihood of an aneurysm rupturing but added that “it is very difficult to determine whether the triggers identified in this study are definitely related to the onset of a stroke as they could simply be put down to coincidence”. He said a lot more research needs to be carried out to assess whether each of the identified triggers could directly cause an aneurysm to rupture.

Name supplied We have lived, shopped and dined in Torremolinos for 9 years. We chose to live in Torremolinos because of its lively, diverse, easy-going atmosphere and city centre, and have tried to be good citizens by buying a home, registering on the Empadronamiento and paying taxes. We live a ways from the centre so frequently drive in to shop, bank and dine, but that has come to a sad end for us now and we wanted to alert others to the danger of doing so. Recently we drove into the centre for an evening meal, as we do several times a week, and we parked on a quiet side street lined with other cars where we've parked for 9 years now without incident, but this time we received a 200 Euro parking fine! We thought there must be some mistake so
Torremolinos visited the Local Police, who have always seemed to have no particular job to do, driving right past cars double-parked on the main street blocking traffic, not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks and ignoring people allowing their dogs to defecate on the pavement right in their sight without taking any action. Apparently Torremolinos' ruling party is now looking for ways to increase its coffers because the Local Police told us that the street we've parked on, with many others, on both side for so long, is a no parking street, though there are no yellow lines nor no parking signs. We mentioned that the town is full of streets just like the one we park on and all lined with cars since there is so little parking in town and we were told it is all illegal and not allowed. This hostile policy towards shoppers will only hurt the many struggling businesses even more as more people stop parking and shopping in the centre. Already there are many shops and restaurants that have closed. Our town council now seems intent on closing all the rest of them. Hopefully, the May elections will change this and a new party will restore the easygoing way of life that attracted us here in the first place.

o start off by finding The Plough, also known as Ursa Major or the Great Bear; the Americans call it the Big Dipper it’s the most famous constellation and probably the easiest to find. Look almost directly overhead and you will see a group of seven stars that looks a bit like a saucepan. It has three stars forming the curved handle and four stars make up the bowl. At this time of the year it appears upside down with the handle to the right, if you watch it over the course of an evening you’ll see that it moves around the sky in an anti-clockwise direction like the hand on a giant clock.

f you follow the two left hand stars in the bowl of the plough, called the pointers, in a straight line directly downwards then the first brightish star that you come to is the North Star or Pole Star. Everyone is surprised when they first find the Pole Star because there is a general idea that the North Star is the brightest star; it isn’t the brightest and in fact it’s not very noticeable at all, even I have to use the plough to find it. The North Star just happens to lie almost directly over the North Pole of the Earth so as the Earth spins on its axis during a day then the North Star never moves, it is always in the same place like the centre of our celestial clock.

ow follow the curve of the handle of the plough and as the curve continues you’ll find a very bright red coloured star called Arcturus. You should be turned around now and looking south out over the sea. Arcturus is a huge red giant star near to the end of its life. It has swelled up so much that if you placed it where our Sun is then the edge of it would stretch out to Mars!

o continue the arc past Arcturus and onto a bright bluey white star called Spica. The difference in colour between Arcturus and Spica is very noticeable. Spica is the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo. The rest of the constellation though is fairly faint stars and it is not very recognisable.

ust to the right of Spica at the moment is the planet Saturn appearing as a yellow star. If you look at Saturn even with a modest pair of binoculars you will easily be able to make out the rings. With binoculars they look like two little spikes coming out from the sides of the planet.

o back to the Plough again only this time instead of following the two pointer stars to the North Star follow them in the opposite direction and here you will find Leo. Leo looks like a big reversed question mark or sickle, this is the head of the lion with the body stretching off to the left. With a bit of imagination it does look a bit like one of the lions in Trafalgar Square.

The four men at the head of British car maker MG Rover when it folded in 2005, resulting in the loss of more than 6,000 jobs, were banned on Sunday from serving as directors for between four and six years.Peter Beale, Nick Stephenson, John Edwards and John Towers ( pictured) were directors of the Phoenix Venture Holdings company which bought MG Rover, based in Birmingham, for £10 ($16) in 2000.

Hooray - no rain !! At last the weather has relented and gave us last Sunday a glorious day for cricket. The recent mix of rain, warmth and sunshine, aided by skill and more than a little hard work by David saw the New Cartama Oval looking at its beautiful best. The pre-lunch training session was lighthearted but purposeful to an accompaniment of some serious sledging by the umpires. After lunch the mood changed as the players divided into two teams for a 20-20 match and each one set about the serious business of trying to beat the other. Tournament on Joan Hunt, President of CUDECA, was thrilled to receive a big cheque following the charity golf tournament hosted by The Royal Golf Club Las Brisas. The club, in Nueva Andalucia, held its annual event in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. Golfers teed off at 9.30am and played 18 holes and then onto the beautiful front green to participate in the putting competition before sitting down to a superb luncheon organised by Antonio from the club restaurant. Seve’s funeral to take place in his home village of Pedrena

The funeral of golfing legend Seve Ballesteros will take place today (Wednesday) in his home village of Pedrena in Spain. The ceremony will be at the San Pedro parish church at 1 pm. Ballesteros died aged 54 in the early hours of Saturday morning after a long battle with cancer. "Seve will be cremated at a ceremony that will be as intimate as possible and at a place that nobody will know," said the Ballesteros family. "That was his express wish. His ashes will remain at his estate, at his home in Pedrena."
