Draft law for dignified death p3
Cabinet approves measures to aid terminally ill but does not touch on euthanasia
Countrywide protests - National news
Police break up protest camp Young and not-so-young people took to the streets in more than 50 cities across the country on Sunday in mass protests against unemployment and the economic crisis. The protesters were demanding “a change of course and a dignified future”. And it was not just a one-off event. The new protest 'platform', Democracia Real Ya! (Real Democracy Now), which its founders say is nonpolitical, was launched on the internet and has gone viral. Sunday's march in Madrid ended in a street battle between the police and around 400 protesters, who started burning rubbish containers. Police
arrested 24 people, but reports from the rest of the country indicate that marches elsewhere passed off without incidents. The protesters announced plans to camp out in Madrid's Puerta del Sol until this Sunday's elections, and people of all ages of all ages took up their spots. The group posted a message on its internet blog calling for people to join its “indefinite camping out in Sol”. But by 5 am yesterday

developments in the Puerta del Sol. At press time, it was unclear if Real Democracy Now would try to take back the square, where there had been a big police presence all day.

Quake-hit town begins reconstruction
By Kym Wickham
There was a minor panic on Tuesday in Lorca, when a building marked for demolition following last week’s earthquake collapsed as just as the work was beginning.
ICKHAM’S
WORLD

I have a yearly pass for Fuengirola Zoo that I was going to use this weekend but was so busy getting the house ready for visitors that I never got the chance. However, all was not lost as I met a friend, Suzie, that I hadn't seen for ages and we had a good natter and moan over cups of tea! Last week was one of the worst I've had for ages. My big old dog, Bundle Bear – the one that had all the trouble last year with his neck – had to be put to sleep. We had had him since he and his sister were about 5 weeks old and dumped together with their mum. Bundle had a great life with us and for a big dog was very old at 14 but, of course, it's always upsetting when you have to say goodbye to a much loved pet. We still have Posh Paws and Hannie so I'll still get a bit of exercise walking them. Local elections are this with us this weekend, on Sunday, so don't forget that you'll need to know where your centre for voting is. There are also some smaller parties that purport to be going to be doing something for us foreigners if they get in. Of course, one can think: “what's the point in voting here, nothing ever gets done for us anyway?”. True (except for in Mijas where they've got an exceptionally hardworking foreigner's department) but, if you don't vote, you get no say in anything whatsoever. It's up to you to make sure things get done.
No-one was hurt, although the church next door was slightly damaged by falling masonry. The five owners of the flats in the four-storey building had already signed the consent form and had been living with relatives and friends since two earthquakes hit the town a week ago. About 20 per cent of the town's buildings have been pronounced dangerous because of structural damage and there is a continued risk of falling debris in another 40 per cent Residents have gradually been returning to the buildings which have been pronounced safe.
Public Works minister José Blanco has signed an agreement with Mayor Francisco Jodar and Murcia regional premier Ramon Luis Valcarcel setting out the help his ministry will provide for the repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the town's buildings. There will be compensation of 106,000 for families whose homes were destroyed and 24,000 for the owners of houses that were damaged. They will receive a subsidy 6,671 a year to help them pay rentals until they can return to their homes. Homes must be reconstructed or

rehabilitated in a maximum period of 24 months, or 12 months in the case of lesser repairs. Meanwhile, some 4,000 people evacuated from their homes have been transferred to a single camp in an effort to stop people from neighbouring towns taking advantage of the services and hand-outs provided by Proteccion Civil, the Red Cross and the Army's Emergency Unit. Most of the people in the camps are immigrants who have no family in Spain to go to. Nearly all the Spanish victims of the quakes have been taken in by relatives or friends. Every effort is being made to rehouse the remaining evacuees as quickly as possible.

Draft law provides for dignified death The draft law setting out the rights of terminally ill patients and the obligations of professionals caring for them which was approved by the Cabinet last Friday stops short of legalizing euthanasia. Under the law, patients have the right to be informed of all the treatments available to them, how effective they will be and how long they can expect to live. This information will only be handed out to third parties if the patient allows it. The law also states patients may refuse medical treatment and sedation even if it means accelerating the moment of death. Patients will also have the right to die in privacy in an individual hospital room, and to receive spiritual comfort in keeping with their faith.
Most of the rights in the new law were written into the 2002 Patient Autonomy Law, but cases like that of Inmaculada Echevarría, who had to wait six months to be taken off the respirator that kept her alive, raised the need for more specific legislation. But the draft law does not touch on the thorny issues of euthanasia or assisted suicide, which are still considered crimes. The Socialist Party pledged in its 2004 election program to set up a congressional committee to analyse euthanasia, but this initiative has been quietly relegated to the back
burner because of opposition from the church and other sectors of society. When presenting the draft law Health minister Leire Pajín stressed that it "does not decriminalize euthanasia or assisted suicide. What it does is ensure that medical interventions avoid
therapeutic cruelty and unnecessary suffering." Luis Montes, president of the pro-dignified death association Derecho a Morir Dignamente, said most people wanted a comfortable death for themselves and their relatives. Montes made headlines in 2006 when he
was charged - and later cleared by the courts - of using sedatives to kill nearly 400 patients at Madrid's Leganés hospital. Andalusia was the first region to pass a dignified death law, on March 17th, 2010.

Beheading suspect 'was wanted' Police had issued an arrest warrant for Deyan Valentinov Deyanov, 28, three days before he allegedly stabbed and beheaded Jennifer Mills-Westley, 60, in a shop in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, last Friday. A police spokeswoman said the Bulgarian man was arrested in January after he allegedly punched a man in the mouth and knocked his teeth out. He was admitted to a psychiatric unit for assessment the following month after police received complaints about his erratic behaviour. He was later
discharged but had to go to court every month to sign in with magistrates, as one of the bail conditions. A detention order issued on May 10th after he failed to appear at the court was received by the police two days later. As the order was not marked as urgent, as some are, the
spokeswoman said there was no reason for officers to believe he was dangerous. She said Mr Deyanov had been arrested on two previous occasions - for criminal damage to property, and causing bodily injury. Meanwhile, a local job office denied reports that Ms Mills-
Westley sought help before Friday's attack. The denial came after media reports suggested she had sought refuge in the building minutes before she was killed. Dominica Fernandez, of the regional interior ministry, said the attack appeared to be random and that the suspect was well
known in the area. The mayor of Arona, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, said if Mr Deyanov had been in prison, this would not have happened. Statistics show that this kind of violence is extremely rare in the Canary Islands which attract more than 10 million tourists each year.
Seamen on way home after release Two sailors from Galicia who were kidnapped by Somali pirates at the end of last December were released last Saturday morning. Juan Alfonso Rey Echeverri and José Alfonso García Rey were the captain and the boatswain,
respectively, of the Vega 5, a Mozambique-flagged ship operated by Pescamar SL in a joint venture with Pescanova. The rest of the fishing fleet lost contact with the Vega 5 on December 28th, while it was operating between
Mozambique and Madagascar, off the port of Beira. The rest of the 24man crew were Mozambicans and Indonesians. The Vega 5 had no private-security agents on board, as do the Spanish tuna fishing

vessels operating in the Indian Ocean. Somali pirates had never attacked so far south and Mozambique's waters are outside the area covered by Operation Atalanta, set up to help fight piracy. Rey and Garcia boarded a ship
belonging to Pescanova, and were taken a "safe harbour". The two men are expected to arrive in Galicia by the middle of this week. The Vega's owner has denied paying a ransom of €3.5 million, as reported in the press.
The newly legalised Basque left-wing coalition, Bildu, has asked the International Contact Group headed by South African lawyer Brian Currin (pictured) to negotiate the treatment of ETA prisoners with the authorities. Mr Currin arrived in Spain on Monday for talks with the coalition. A Bildu spokesman said that without a government guarantee for the prisoners release, negotiations with the Basque terrorist group to get them to hand over their arms would not be successful. The government has refused to talk to Mr Currin and his group because it could be interpreted as a negotiation with ETA which could lead to an end of the the antiterrorist pact that it maintains with the Partido Popular.

Govt against Schengen suspensions Primitivo Gonzalez
A professor from the University of La Coruña, visiting his son in Villanueva del Pardillo just outside Madrid, went to mass on Sunday and was horrified to hear the priest accuse the government during his sermon of “assassinating children in their mother’s wombs” and of being “more Nazi than Hitler’s Nazis”.
Spain, Malta and Belgium were the only EU members to come out in Brussels last week against the European Commission's proposal to temporarily close borders between the nations that signed the Schengen agreement when they have problems with migrants. While the interior ministers of the other Schengen nations agreed that borders could be closed under exceptional circumstances and under strict conditions, they joined Spain in asking the EC to decide on and supervise the closures to avoid nations taking unilateral decisions. MADRID
The priest also accused Health Minister Leire Pajin of “killing old people who are a nuisance with lethal injections” under the draft dignified death law approved by the Cabinet
last week. Primitivo Gonzalez leapt to his feet and reminded the priest “we are attending mass not a party political meeting”. Four men hustled him out of the church as he shouted
“I’m Catholic too”. After accusing the priest of slandering the government before the court in nearby San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Sr Gonzalez told reporters that he was “saddened and
very disappointed” by the sermon and by the attitude of the other members of the congregation who watched him being expelled without protesting.
Shop hours to be more flexible Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has instructed the industry ministry to draw up a proposal to allow shops in at least 20 tourist zones around the country to open on Sundays. The ministry will have to draw up guidelines to
define “zones of special tourist interest” before the proposal can be presented to the regional governments concerned, who have the final say in the matter. The move came after the president of El Corte Ingles, Isidoro Alvarez, complained to the prime minister at a meeting
last week that cruise ships arrive at ports around Spain on Sundays but the tourists can’t buy anything because all the shops are closed. Current regulations fix opening hours at a minimum of 72 per week in all the regions except Madrid, which allows total
freedom, and Castilla-Leon, La Rioja and the Canary Islands, where shops can open up to 90 hours a week. As regards Sunday opening, all the regions permit eight Sundays a year, except Madrid, where the limit is 22, Ceuta 12, Murcia 10 and the Canary Islands 9.

French question ‘code of silence’

SOMALIA
Piracy costs $8.3bn a year
Since IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn (pictured) was arrested on Saturday on board a plane at New York's JFK airport and charged with sexual assault, a stunned France has begun questioning the code of silence that protects the private lives of the rich, famous and powerful. Pierre Haski, one of France’s leading political commentators said in an interview said that journalists had not done their job properly and now needed to redefine their role more aggressively, by recognising that not everything private was private. Politicians in France are not hounded out of office for sexual indiscretions. Traditionally, a political man's sexual prowess proved his vigour, showing his constituents that he was fully and physically capable of running the country. Rumours about Mr. Strauss-
Kahn’s behaviour have swirled through France for years. In a kind of French parlour game, journalists and authors quoted one another as a way to avoid lawsuits. Now two incidents from his past have emerged. In 2007, shortly after Mr Strauss-Kahn joined the International Monetary Fund, he had an affair with Piroska M. Nagy, a blonde Hungarian-born economist. She was 50 at the time and married . Their brief affair soon became public, spurring an internal investigation at the Fund that cleared him of having abused the power of his
office but concluded that he had shown poor judgement. Ms. Nagy told a friend, who requested anonymity, that the affair was consensual, but that she had felt coerced because Mr. Strauss-Kahn was so forceful and so senior to her, making it hard for her to say no. The other incident involves Tristane Banon, 31, a journalist and writer who claimed in a television interview on Monday that Mr Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her during an interview in 2002. She said her mother, Anne Mansouret, a Socialist Party
official, persuaded her at the time not to file suit against a man who was close to her family and to their politics. Her lawyer, David Koubbi, has said that she will now file a complaint. Mr Strauss-Kahn was remanded in custody at New York's notorious Rikers Island jail on Monday after the court deemed he was a flight risk. He faces seven charges and could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison. Mr Strauss-Kahn, who had been seen as a favourite in France's 2012 presidential elections, has denied the charges.
Trump won't run for president
Geopolicity economic intelligence service estimates that piracy off the Somali coast costs the international community up to $8.3bn a year, which could reach $1315bn by 2015. It calculates that a pirate can earn up to $79,000 a year and, given the
supply and demand for piracy services, it forecasts an annual increase of 200-400 in the number of pirates operating off the Somali coast. According to the EU Navfor anti-piracy force, 23 vessels and 530 hostages are currently being held.

President wants lie detector test President Rafael Correa has said he is prepared to take a lie detector test to prove he did not accept money from Colombian left-wing rebels. His denial came three days after the Londonbased International Institute for Strategic Studies alleged links between Farc rebels and Ecuador. It said it had seen testimony from a rebel which allegedly detailed Mr Correa's knowledge of Farc contributions to his campaign. Sr Correa denied ever meeting the Farc and told reporters: "My hands are clean."
US tycoon Donald Trump said in a statement on Monday that he will not run for JAPAN the US presidency in 2012, declaring he is not ready to leave the private sector. Twitter 'vital' link to patients He said he could win but "business is my greatest passion". In recent months, the real estate mogul and reality television star had loudly questioned whether President Barack Obama was born in the US. The media attention that gained and his already high name
recognition boosted him to the top tier of candidates. In his statement, Mr Trump said that through his "unofficial" campaigning, he had come to realise that "running for public office cannot be done half heartedly". Had he run, Mr Trump would have had to
make significant disclosures about his financial interests and undergo scrutiny of his business activities, and analysts had suggested that that prospect could dissuade a candidacy. And Mr Trump's tumultuous personal life - played out in past decades across the
pages of New York's tabloid newspapers - his ideological inconsistency, his reputation as a showman and his lack of political experience could have proven problematic for serious-minded and doctrinaire Republican primary voters.
In letters written to The Lancet, doctors across the country have said social networking sites like Twitter are proving "excellent systems" for communicating with chronically-ill patients and notifying them where to get medication. Although telephone networks were disrupted after the earthquake, internet access remained reliable. They said that using the “re-tweet” facility on Twitter allowed information to be spread rapidly but the doctors also said the patients needed the hands-on help of countless medical staff to deliver drugs and oxygen.

Zurich votes to keep assisted suicide Voters in Zurich on Sunday rejected proposed bans on assisted suicide and "suicide tourism". Some 85 per cent of the 278,000 votes cast opposed the ban and 78 per cent opposed outlawing it for foreigners. About 200 people commit assisted suicide each year in Zurich, including many foreign visitors. It has been legal in Switzerland since 1941 if performed by a nonphysician with no vested interest in the death. Opinion polls had indicated that most Swiss were in favour of assisted suicide,
but that many were against what has become known as suicide tourism. People from Germany, France and other nations where the practice remains illegal come to die in Switzerland, and one local organisation, Dignitas, says it has helped more than 1,000 foreigners to take their own lives. Another group, Exit, will only help those who are permanently resident in the country, because the process takes time, and
much counselling for both patients and relatives. Its vice-president, Bernhard Sutter, said the result showed Swiss voters believed in "selfdetermination at the end of life".
Pop star sworn in as president Haitian pop star Michel Martelly, aka Sweet Mickey, has been sworn in as president of the poorest country in the Americas. He told a cheering crowd in Port-au-Prince: "This is a new Haiti, open for business now." He has pledged to speed up earthquake reconstruction,
develop the impoverished countryside and build a modern army. Watching dignitaries included former US President Bill Clinton, co-chair of the Haiti Reconstruction Commission, which controls billions of dollars in aid pledged to rebuild earthquake damage. In
addition to the challenge of rebuilding the quakeshattered capital, Port-au-Prince, Haiti faces a cholera epidemic, an economy in ruins and the legacy of a violent past. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians still live in tent cities after the devastating January 2010 earthquake.

UK News Protest march with a difference Thousands of women are expected to take to the streets in London and Edinburgh next month as the two cities host “SlutWalks”.
Join FREE today!
SlutWalk events began in Canada last month and have captured worldwide interest. They are a protest against the view that some sexual assault victims
should shoulder some of the blame for their attacks if they choose to wear “provocative” clothes. A local police officer in Toronto said that women should avoid “dressing like sluts” in order not to be victimised. Michael Sanguinetti later apologised after the remarks, made to students
at a law school, sparked a storm of protest. The Edinburgh SlutWalk, on June 4th, is being organised by 35-year-old Nicola Carter, herself the victim of a sexual assault. Men are being encouraged to take part in the walks too, but the dress code is “come as you wish” so comfy clothes and trainers are not a problem.

Weather forecasters believe that from Saturday temperatures will hit 29 degrees and stay like that for a fortnight, which would mean that May will become the hottest on record since records began 353 years ago. Environment ministers chaired an emergency drought meeting on Monday amid anxieties that
the continued lack of rainfall will hit agriculture and the environment. Farmers are worrying about spring crops and the knock-on effect which could lead to problems storing sufficient foodstuffs to feed animals next winter. England and Wales have recorded the highest March and April temperatures since 1938 and forecasts suggest that the dry weather will continue into June although there is the chance of thunderstorms.
The RSPB has issued an appeal to the public to help house martins and swallows. The birds make ornate nests using mud and people are being urged to put wet mud in shallow containers, like dustbin lids, at the end of their gardens, or to turn a part of their borders into a mud patch. Without mud the birds cannot repair old nests or create new ones, and that would have a dramatic effect on breeding.
Slow but sure for charity A man dressed as Brian the Snail from the Magic Roundabout has finally finished the London Marathon, nearly a month after it started. Lloyd Scott dragged himself along the 26.2 mile course face down on a sled wearing the very tight costume. He was raising money for the charity Action for Kids, which helps children with mobility difficulties. The 49-year-old, from Essex, had a gruelling time. He had to crawl through rubbish, broken glass and dog mess and suffered from nosebleeds, cramp and vomiting, because he could not digest his food properly. He had to break his journey to have the blood vessels in his nose cauterised. After reaching the finishing line Lloyd said that
the marathon had been very demanding but hoped that it would focus attention on the charity. “I have chosen to make it difficult for myself, but these kids don’t have that choice. Every day they are confronted with mobility issues.”
Lloyd ran his first marathon in 1990 after suffering from leukaemia and has raised more than £5 million for charity since. He ran one race in an antique diving suit and also finished an underwater marathon in Loch Ness.

Visit marks new stage in Anglo-Irish relations The Queen’s State Visit to Ireland this week has been heralded as an extraordinary moment in the history of the two countries, as she became the first British monarch to visit the Republic. More than 100 armed British policemen were in the streets of Dublin yesterday (Tuesday) to help protect the Queen as she began her four day visit just hours after a bomb was discovered on the outskirts of the city. The city centre has been turned into a car free zone to prevent car bomb attacks by dissidents and there is tight security on land and in the air. Republican terrorists have threatened to disrupt the tour, the first day of which coincided with the 37th anniversary of the bloodiest day of the troubles, when 34 died in four car bomb attacks in Dublin and Monaghan. The Queen’s programme did not shirk the sites that illustrated the troubled history between the two countries. She yesterday laid a wreath in Dublin’s Garden of Remembrance, which honours those who died fighting to free Ireland
from British rule, and today (Wednesday) visits Croke Park Stadium, where British troops opened fire at a Gaelic football match in 1920, killing 14. Tonight the Queen will deliver her only speech of the tour at the state banquet at Dublin Castle. Prime Minister David Cameron will also attend. Irish President Mary McAleese said the visit was a “phenomenal sign and a signal of the success of the peace process and absolutely the right moment for us to welcome the Queen onto Irish soil...the Head of State of our immediate next door neighbours”. The last British monarch to visit Ireland was George V,
the Queen’s grandfather, in 1911, when the country was still part of the British Empire . There were clashes with police on the first day of the tour. Minor scuffles broke out and flares were lit near the Garden of Remembrance. The day before her departure the area around Buckingham Palace was closed off after police received a coded bomb threat from Irish Republican dissidents who regard the Queen as a war criminal. The call sparked a high security alert as roads around St James’s Park, the Palace and Trafalgar Square were closed. A suitcase left unattended outside a hotel was blown up in a controlled explosion.
Hats off to Bea It has been compared to a turkey twizzler, a set of antlers, and a toilet seat. Facebook groups have been set up in its honour and it has become and internet sensation, photoshopped onto the heads of the famous. The famous hat sported by Princess Beatrice at last month’s royal wedding caused a worldwide stir. And now it’s up for grabs – it is being auctioned on eBay to raise funds for UNICEF and Children in Crisis. Duncan Bannatyne, UNICEF UK ambassador and Dragon in Dragon’s Den, kicked off the bidding for the Phillip Treacey designed confection for £5,000 at the end of last week, and since then more bidders have pushed the price upwards. He said: “Whatever anyone thinks of the hat, it is fantastic that Princess Beatrice is doing this for UNICEF and Children in
Crisis. Good for her.” The hat appears on the site described as “individual, fun, and elegant” and while Phillip Treacey continues to be puzzled by the storm of comment it sparked off, the two charities are delighted that the Princess is taking advantage of the publicity to raise funds. Kay Thompson, chief executive of Children in Crisis, said:” Princess Beatrice is a tremendous ambassador for the charity and we are extremely grateful for her support with this great initiative.” Anybody who wants to bid for a hat that has already gone down in history has until May 22nd.

Brit’s body found in Huelva Euromillions The body of the 18-year-old Briton who has not been seen since he went for a swim off Bota beach in Huelva on Sunday afternoon was discovered on Tuesday morning at a beach four miles away by two Civil Protection volunteers working with the search parties which had been searching for the youth since he disappeared. There will be an autopsy, but a Guardia Civil spokesman said it was believed to be death by drowning. The sea off Bota beach is known for its treacherous currents and several people have drowned there in recent years.

The lynx is in danger of extinction here in Spain and its history has been explored in a book which spotlights how environmental protection has developed. In his recently published biography of José Luis Valverde, the man who fought to have Doñana declared a national park, author Jorge Molina recalls that back in the old days before people were environmentally aware, hunters paid 12 pesetas for a permit to kill one of the Iberian lynxes that lived there. Today, the lynx is the big cat most in danger of extinction and, ironically, it is now less endangered thanks to the breeding project in Doñana. Valverde was known as the Quijote of Doñana, because his dream of saving the wetlands seemed impossible in those environmentally dark days. He also had his
Sancho Panza - Menegildo, an old sailor, who told his friends how they worked together to save the imperial eagle. In those days there was no specialist equipment for handling or watching wild birds, so Menegildo had to climb a tree to inspect a nest and if there were three eggs in it, he would take the third because, as Valverde said, a pair of eagles can only feed
two chicks successfully “so we have to hand-rear the third”. Valverde's methods may have been primitive but the lynxes and imperial eagles in Doñana are living proof of their success. The book Doñana: Todo era nuevo y salvaje” was published under the auspices of the Higher Council of Scientific Research and the Lara Foundation.

‘Stolen’ babies’ graves to be opened The families of 69 babies who allegedly were born dead in Malaga province between the end of the Civil War and the early 1990s are to ask the courts for permission to open the graves where they were buried. Most of them were allegedly buried in mass graves in the old San Rafael cemetery or in the garden of the Hospital Civil in the provincial capital, which will make their identification difficult, if not impossible.

But Antonio Morales, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation into the alleged theft of the babies in Malaga, said it could be a very important line of investigation because if the “remains do not appear, then it was a lie, and if they do, then tests can prove if they really are the babies said to have been born dead”.

Hundreds of families across Spain believe their babies were stolen at birth to be sold to couples who could not have children. In the early years after the Civil War, the authorities gave permission for the babies of women known to have supported the defeated Second Republic to be given in adoption, but as time wore on, several clinics involved realised how lucrative the practice was and went into business on their own account. Last year, a nun who had worked in a clinic in Madrid involved in the practice reported it to the authorities, and since then several other surviving nuns, nurses and doctors have told all they know. Isabel Agüera, the first woman to report a case in Malaga last summer, has called a meeting for affected families in Alhaurin de la Torre on June 18th to collect signatures to request the necessary permits, as has already been done in Cadiz. The few cases where mothers and children have been reunited so far, thanks to the efforts of the National Association of People affected by Irregular Adoptions (Anadir), indicate that many of the “dead” children may be alive.

They are demanding that the city council make good on its promise to give them a new area to work in and that the Local Police stop fining them at every opportunity. BENALMADENA

The company undertakes to pay the eight cleaners currently working part-time, who will now work every morning from Monday to Friday. It also undertakes to supply the necessary equipment which will pass to the council at the end of the contract. The company had already won a €6 million contract to provide maintenance and rubbish collection services along the promenade.

No time to paws for More tours on thought at dog show agenda for cemetery
It was a real family affair at last Saturday’s annual ARCH/CHAIN dog show, when a granddaughter and grandmother team scooped the top two prizes in the Easter fancy dress competition. Young Abi Hilton dressed her Yorkie dog Scooby as an Easter egg with Easter bonnet and won first place, while grandma Joan Lacey dressed Pointer cross Bonnie as an Easter daffodil, and took second spot (pictured below). Abi went on to take 2nd place in the junior handler section, and Scooby came 4th in the intermediate 1-7 years old class. Even the family cat got in on the act – Coco came third in the closely fought most appealing cat photographic competition.
Last Saturday’s Noche en Blanco drew the crowds to Malaga’s cultural and artistic sites as doors were thrown open and entry was free – and the evening was a huge success for the English Cemetery, who took part in the event for the first time.
The show had been cancelled two weeks earlier due to poor weather and organisers were delighted that supporters of the two charities turned out in force to enjoy the dog show, grab a burger and browse the stalls. Youngsters enjoyed the donkey rides. The day raised just over €1,000 euros – a grand result. Many of the dogs who took part were rescue animals – and animal charity SOS brought along some of the dogs currently at the refuge. Best in Show went to Elle, owned by Willem Van Ommer. Elle also won the best rescued female category – a fantastic result for a dog that had been very badly treated before being rescued, and who still bears some of the scars from that treatment. Toby, belonging to Ann Tourner, was reserve Best in Show, as well as
being the most handsome male (pictured above left to right Toby and owner, Bill from Cat and Dog World and Elle and owner). Other winners were: Best puppy: Joanna De-Foy with Tommy; Best Intermediate 1-7: Jacqueline Napier with Pepsi; Prettiest female: Eva Odheden with Doris; Waggiest tail: Tassia Josephs-Radford with Tricksi; Sack race: Kirstie Waller with Sky; Best junior handler: Nicholas VasquezGoffin with Bora; Best rescued male: Joanna DeFoy with Tommy, and dog the judges most likely to take home: Chrystal McCallum with Pooky. “We are grateful to all who turned out after the disappointment of the cancellation, and a big thank you goes to the stall holders and everybody who helped make the day a successful fundraiser,” said ARCH’s Jill.
Mods and rockers Manilva IBI relief on a rally roll
It’s time to dust off the soundtrack to the sixties but maybe it’s not the weather to dig out the Parka coat – and gear up for the Vespa scooter competition at the fourth Classic Motorbike Rally in Mijas on Saturday and
Sunday May 28th and 29th. Those born to be wild will be checking over their classic bikes and heading off to the white pueblo. Apart from the rally there will be an antique vehicle exhibition and a market, with spare parts.
A delegation from the Tax Office of the ayuntamiento of Manilva met recently with the technical personnel of the IBI to consider the applications received regarding subsidies for the payment of Property Tax which will benefit many families in the municipality. A total of 550 residents have applied for this grant which allows a reduction of 20% on gross property tax for the next two years. This could mean a reduction in IBI bills of up to €45 per applicant. info from inmalagatoday.com
Guided tours were laid on as well as music and poetry reading in St George’s Church. Places for the tours were snapped up and the recital proved so popular that disappointed people had to be turned away. Maria Gámez, Delegada de Gobierno de la Junta de Andalucia, was in the first tour group, and Malaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre also found time to join in on a tour.
The evening proved so successful that the English Cemetery in Malaga Foundation is considering offering more tours during the summer months so watch this space for tour dates and times. Over at CAC Malaga the contemporary arts centre used the theme of open access to the arts and culture as a spring board for its petition calling on the release from jail of Chinese artist Ai Wewei. He was detained at Beijing Airport on April 3rd and since then there has been no public pronouncement on what has happened to him. Almost 900 visitors to CAC Malaga during the course of Noche en Blanco signed the petition.

Innovation Award for Soltech’s Amazing Solar Energy Roof Tile System Having been awarded the Gold Medal for “Hottest Material Innovation” at the 2010 North European Building Fair, Soltech Energy Mediterráneo’s cutting-edge “Solar Roof Tile” system is now making waves in Southern Spain. Developed in Sweden, the patented Techo Solar system (Spanish for “Solar Roof”) comprises of crystalline roof tiles that double as solar energy collectors, providing huge quantities of free hot water to meet any home or building’s needs. This includes heating swimming pools, water based central heating systems and all regular domestic hot water requirements. As Andreas Telander, Managing Director of Soltech Spain points out: “While our Solar Roof Tile system saves money, is easy to install, is competitively priced and eligible for grant assistance, the main attraction for many communities and homeowners has been the beautiful aesthetic of the roof tiles. Traditional solar panels are ugly and bring a
dated and jaded feel to a home. Our Solar Tile system on the other hand integrates seamlessly with traditional roof tiles, adding to the aesthetic and ultimately the value of a property.” The radically innovative nature of the system has so impressed the Junta de Andalucía that they are now directly reimbursing homeowners with approximately 50% of the system costs; this compares with an average of 25% grants available on standard Solar Panels. These 50% grants are guaranteed until at least July. And considering that almost 70 per cent of a home’s energy bill relates to heating water, the system can save an incredible amount of money in the short-term, let alone in the longer term considering the unrelenting upward trend in electricity costs on account
of unpredictable oil and gas prices. Andreas adds: “Customers who may not necessarily have optimum orientation on their roofs, but who are still anxious to take advantage of the sizeable grants and cost savings, have used the solar tiles to roof previously uncovered spaces such as pools, sports courts, terraces, barbeque areas and garage ports. When someone else is willing to pay half the cost for you to improve the comfort and aesthetic of your home, and at the same time slash your energy bills both now and forever, many people find that it is an opportunity that they just can’t afford to miss.” Soltech Energy Mediterráneo are available on +34 952 665 954 and on www.soltechenergy.com.

Changing the landscape
S
y this time next week we’ll know just how accurate the recent flood of opinion polls have been. I should imagine the Socialists are praying they will be miles wide of the mark, because if they turn out to be as near as dammit right, then it could turn out to be the worst beating the party’s taken in any election since 1977.
B
win. For example the Partido Popular got 156,000 more votes across the country than the Socialist Party which was not reflected in the composition of the local councils. This is because if one party can make an alliance – Socialists with IU or Partido Andalucista, for example – it will get more seats on the council, and continue governing.
A
T
nd their very worst beating will be here in Andalucia – a hotbed of socialists, anarchists and communists since those ideologies came into existence. But those were the bad old days, when landowners treated their dogs better than the local people who worked their fields and reaped their harvests. When there was little work on the land, the jornaleros and their families were left to fend for themselves – no dole in those days – viewed with indifference by a Catholic Church that backed the landowners to the hilt. So it was no wonder that the starving masses seized on ideas that promised them an end to religious and social oppression as well as schools, houses and jobs.
B
ut all that’s changed. By the end of the Franco dictatorship, most families were no longer starving – thanks largely to money sent by their menfolk who had gone to Barcelona, Germany and Switzerland and other points north to work, and the tourists, who were arriving in ever-increasing numbers.
W
ith the odd hiccup here and there, the standard of living of most Andalucians is better than their grandparents ever dreamed of, but now a steady trickle of them are heading over the Pyrenees looking for work.
S
o it’s no wonder that the polls are predicting victory for the Partido Popular, which – if the polls are right – will end up governing in all the provincial capitals, including Seville, the seat of the regional government.
I
ronically, the government’s insistence on attacking the regional premier of Valencia, Francisco Camps, through the Gurtel corruption case doesn’t seem to be achieving the desired objective – a Socialist takeover of that region. They’ll actually lose seats in the regional parliament and Camps will increase his majority. The same will happen in Madrid – the PP will hold on to the regional government and the city council. The Socialists are set to lose Barcelona city council as well as the Castilla-La Mancha regional government. In other regions, like Extremadura and Asturias, the Socialist Party will only be able to hang on with help from the Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) or the main local party, thanks to the iniquities of Spain’s voting system. The party which gets the most votes doesn’t necessarily
he problem here is that there are too many parties in each town and village so the votes are too dispersed, making it difficult for either of the major parties to get a clear majority. For example, in Coin we have the currently governing Socialist Party, the PP, the Partido Andalucista, IU and two newcomers – Ciudadanos por Coin (CxC) and the Union, Progreso y Democracia (UPD).
I
f the upcoming election was a general one and I could vote in it, I’d go for the UPD. It has national coverage and its founder, Rosa Diez, managed to get a seat in Parliament in the last general election, even though the party was only about six months old. Rosa Diez (Pictured below) had been a Socialist EuroMP until Zapatero started his peace process with the Basque terrorist group ETA. She resigned, formed her party as a “viable alternative” to the Socialists and the PP and one of her main objectives is electoral reform. A look at the figures will tell you why. UPD got 306,079 votes across the country – and only one seat – while the strictly regional Basque Nationalist Party got six seats, with just 306,128 votes. Both the Galician Nationalist Party and the Canary Islands Coalition got two seats each, with fewer votes – just over 212,500 and 174,600 respectively. So I agree with her – the system definitely needs reforming.
H
owever, UPD is running candidates in many Andalucian towns for the first time this year so it is very much of an outsider and a vote for it the equivalent of a wasted one if we want to achieve political change at a local level. The glory days of the Partido Andalucista (PA) are well and truly in the past and and voting for it is the same as voting for the Socialists or the PP, whichever offers it the best enticement. IU would never side with the PP, so a vote for it is a vote for the Socialists.
I
t's all very bewildering, but please go out and vote anway.
pain’s political landscape is about to change on Sunday when voters across the nation go to the polls to select a batch of new leaders for local and regional posts in elections that are beings seen as a referendum on Zapatero’s struggling government. The Popular Party is favoured heavily to win in most regions, wresting control from the Socialists in traditional strongholds such as Castilla-La Mancha, where a tight race is expected. PP secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal is expected to unseat Socialist baron José María Barreda. Another race that is being closely watched are the municipal elections in the Basque Country and Navarre where polls show that 18 percent of voters there are expected to elect candidates from the controversial Bildu coalition. If Bildu captures a good number of seats and positions, it will be the first time in almost 10 years that the Basque radical abertzale left – whose members have often been linked to ETA – will make important political gains in the regions. Bildu, a partnership between the abertzale and the legitimate Eusko Alkartasuna (EA) and Alternatiba parties, is fielding candidates who have no known connection to illegal Basque groups. Its members have come out and renounced terrorism violence and say they want to solve the independence issue through political means. And many in the Basque Country see Bildu, according to the polls, as a genuine step designed to eliminate ETA for once and for all.
B
ut over the weekend, as the two major parties go at it during the last week of campaigning, a surprising element emerged. Thousands of people took to the streets in tense protests in Madrid demanding that Spain look for another alternative system of government, one that is not controlled by the two traditional political parties. About two dozen people were arrested in Madrid . On Sunday, the demonstrators held an “anti-system” march which was sponsored by the group Real Democracy Now. Dozens of protesters after the demonstration set up a camp in Puerta del Sol and had to be dislodged late Monday night by riot police on Madrid government orders. The demonstrators, mostly young people, are demanding fair housing, jobs and changes to the current political structure. Similar demonstrations were held in 50 other cities across Spain and have been dubbed the May 15th Movement. The pent-up frustrations of these young people has finally exploded and at a crucial time. With days before the elections, as the PP and Socialists battle it out over ongoing controversies such as Bildu and corruption, the May 15th Movement has emerged to put things back into perspective and remind Spaniards that what we have is really not working.
Picking up the pieces
L
ast Thursday’s earthquake in Lorca could have been more tragic. But thanks to the quick action by many residents who raced out of their homes when the first tremor struck the loss of lives and injuries were kept to a minimum. Now the residents of Lorca are finding it difficult to pick up their lives as many fear that the buildings in this Murcian town of 92,000 are not safe. Only 20 percent of the businesses have reopened and residents still walk in the middle of the streets fearing that the rubble and debris from weakened buildings could come crumbling down at any point. Parents on Monday opted to keep their children out of school; of the estimated 6,682 students who attend class at 23 schools, only 50 returned.
F
ive days after the twin earthquakes jolted the area and dislodged large chunks of rock from many historic buildings many lorquinos are still leery. Several thousand people are still living in emergency shelters that the army set up on Friday. Engineers, who say that over half of the buildings in Lorca are still unsafe, are concerned that the ground underneath the city might be unstable. Lorca is built on a bed of sand and gravel near where the Eurasian tectonic plate meets the African plate. Some experts say that earthquakes in the area produce a resonance effect underground that shift the soft bed at any point in the future when the earth finally settles. Any such abrupt movements could jolt the already weakened structures above.
T
he government has employed hundreds of construction workers, brick layers and teams of engineers to inspect and help reinforce the buildings, but it is a slow task. Spain’s worst earthquake in 55 years came as the nation is experiencing its worst financial crisis in modern times. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has promised that his government won’t hold back the money when it comes to rebuilding Lorca. Early estimates put damages at more than €70 million. It could take years, however, for the town to regain the progress it had achieved in 20 years. The residents of Lorca, many of them immigrants, were already grappling with a perilous economic situation in their city when the quake hit and now many may have lost it all.

Is inheritance tax in Spain about to change? Inheritance tax is an important consideration for anyone who owns property in Spain or is thinking of purchasing. The autonomous regions are allowed to set their own inheritance tax levels and allowances. However these allowances only apply for the estates of people who have been resident in that region for five years and the beneficiaries are similarly resident. If both the deceased and beneficiaries do not satisfy the residency requirement then the national state rules apply. There is a vast difference between the state inheritance tax rules and the regional allowances. Several regions including Madrid, the Canary Islands, the Balearics, Valencia and Murcia have virtually no inheritance tax between spouses or between parents and children. Others, principally those with socialist administrations, have less generous allowances, nevertheless with professional advice the reductions can be utilised so as to significantly lower or eliminate the inheritance tax burden. For example Andalucia allows a gift to a
spouse, child or parent of up to 175,000 tax free. This is an all or nothing allowance not a nil rate band so a gift of 176,000 would be taxable on the full amount. As previously stated, these allowances only apply where the deceased and beneficiaries are residents. If not, the much less generous state rules apply which simply allow a deduction of just under 16,000 from the gift for tax purposes for spouse, children and parents of the deceased. This can mean that non resident beneficiaries pay many thousands of Euros more tax than they would if they were residents. However help may be at hand for those thousands of non resident holiday home owners or residents of Spain whose principal or reserve beneficiaries (such as their children) are non residents. On the 16th February this year, the European Commission asked Spain
to amend its tax provisions on inheritance and gift tax on the basis that they impose a higher tax burden on non-residents and on assets held abroad. The Commission was of the opinion that the provisions were incompatible with the free movement of workers and capital which are required under European law. In particular, the Commission considered that there was a breach of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (Articles 45 and 63 respectively). The request takes the form of a complementary "reasoned opinion". Spain has been given two months to respond and If there is no satisfactory response , the Commission may decide to refer the case to the EU's Court of Justice. However, this may take some time, the Commission previously sent a reasoned opinion to Spain on 5th May 2010 and although Spanish legislation has been amended slightly, it is still not fully compliant with
EU law. The Commission has therefore decided to send the latest complementary reasoned opinion requesting Spain to make additional changes to its legislation to ensure full compliance. The deadline has now passed but so far there is no news of any response. How Spain will respond, when this will be and how this will change the inheritance tax burden for none residents is not yet clear. The Spanish Government is in financial difficulties as it is and will be reluctant to give up this lucrative, if unjust, stream of revenue. However, Spain is now on notice and to delay the matter may lead to claims from beneficiaries who are adversely affected by Spain's failure to comply. This could lead to a similar situation to Capital Gains Tax which was also discriminatory and ultimately amended to be the same for non-residents and residents alike and also led to a deluge of claims for
compensation from people who had paid the higher rate of tax as non residents. If and when the inheritance laws are changed it would be well worth everyone with a property in Spain to consult their lawyer or accountant to see whether changes should be made to their wills to reduce or eliminate inheritance tax. Water for Elephants BY FRANCIS LAWRENCE Starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson
It all sounds like a Hollywood script from the thirties. An orphaned young man has to leave college, decides to join the circus, and there finds love... But it’s a bit tricky because the gal of his dreams is the wife of his boss. RPat definitely does have a future in movies once the Twilight saga runs its course. He and Reese Witherspoon play the two leads, and complement each other wonderfully. The movie begins with an old man (Hal Holbrook) looking back to his days with a Depression-era circus. Cue for a fade, and voilá, we are back in 1931
and the story is taken up by the young Jacob Jankowski (Pattinson). Jacob has almost finished his vet studies and the plan is to go into partnership with his father. But his parents die in a car crash and Jacob discovers that his father borrowed against his practice to pay for young Jacob’s fees and now there’s nothing left. Jacob hits the road to find work, and finds himself on the
train that’s taking the Benzini Brothers travelling circus from town to town. And that’s when his life changes, as he joins the world of roustabouts, animals, and circus performers. Marlena (Witherspoon) performs with horses and is one of the star turns as well as being married to the sadistic circus owner August (Christoph Waltz), who hires Jacob as the circus vet. August buys
elephant Rosie to be part of a new act with Marlena, and his sadistic treatment of the animal leads to the inevitable clash with Jacob. A real throwback to old Hollywood, with great photography and acting, and a scene stealer in Rosie. Both Pattinson and Witherspoon have waxed lyrical about the wonder of working with the elephant, and it may be good to go armed with a pack of tissues.

NEWS FROM CANNES
Excerpts from The Iron Lady, in which Meryl Streep is transformed into former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, have been shown to selected groups at the Cannes Film Festival and the word is that Streep’s portrayal is uncanny. The actress, renowned for her ability to master accents, has captured the voice, mannerisms and overall look of Mrs Thatcher. The movie covers the run up to her election, all the key moments of the premiership, and her downfall. And although it received no help from sources close to Mrs Thatcher it appears the movie does justice to its
group of horror writers were once asked to describe the most horrific thing imaginable and scenarios of evil monsters and baths full of snakes abounded. Stephen King’s answer was the simplest and most horrific, checking your kids at night and finding them dead. This is true horror, the kind we can relate to, more so than being chased by zombies.
lthough I have not seen “The Roommate” (2011) I understand it is pretty much a remake of SWF, so check it out if you’re looking for a more recent adaptation of the same.

nother creepy apartment rental movie is the recent “The Resident” (2011). A young doctor (Hilary Swank) rents an enormous, too good to be true apartment, and then begins to suspect she may not be alone in her new Brooklyn loft and she learns that her landlord has formed a frightening obsession with her. The landlord is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, better known as the affable dying Denny from Grey’s Anatomy, so it is understandable why the penny should take so long to drop, as initially, he comes across as a really
nice guy…..just goes to show, you never can tell!
“
The Fourth Floor” (1999) brings us a spooky tale of a woman who inherits a rent-controlled apartment and is terrorized by a neighbour. The movie brings us Juliette Lewis at her feisty best, as the victim of this horror drama who won’t let herself be driven out of her apartment. Then the terror below her that first is just annoying begins to turn deadly. An all star cast, featuring William Hurt as her boyfriend, all contribute to a rivetingly good movie.

his is of course, the plot of the 1990 film “Pacific Heights” starring Melanie Griffiths and Michael Keaton at his deliciously evil best! Sometimes things fall apart so that they can be built up stronger and the whirlwind of the last few weeks has finally slowed down. Now you can gather up the dropped sticks, place them in a pile ready for a controlled fire that produces warmth without risk of it spreading where it shouldn’t. Just know that whatever you are putting your energy into at the moment has a real chance of happening. Believe in yourself and your abilities and you are practically there. It is time to put troubling situations behind you and focus on the positive ones in your life. If you have been involved in dodges or shady dealings in the past then this is the time to clean up your act. Most things start to become easier to achieve now and you have the energy to take care of any loose ends in your life. Whatever happens follow your instinct, it has the ability to smell where the fortunes lay. Through strategic planning you could find something landing right in your lap. Is someone pulling at your heartstrings? There seems to be a strong emotional pull towards someone or some place and even though you know it does not make any logical sense – it is still there. You could feel that listening to your heart leads you down a road that does not have a pleasant outcome and creates obstacles but the destination may not be as doubtful as you think. Take some time out and space for yourself, or seek the counsel of someone you trust, all will become clear shortly. Responsibility lies upon your shoulders and this message is loud and clear, you are starting to see the results of taking the lead in your life and indeed you are managing. Juggling is becoming second nature to you and for a bit longer you have to keep all the balls in the air. Dedication and perseverance will bring ripe rewards soon. Courage and confidence to produce and exceed your own expectations are coming your way. There will be no stopping you. You have a choice this week to either accept what comes your way or step in and take control of the outcome. Your energy levels are high giving you courage and enthusiasm to inject into anything you desire. Capitalising upon opportunities as they arise can seem easy at this moment in time. Romance and relationships in general are blossoming and if you are thinking of raising an existing romance up a degree to the next level then you only have to focus.
LIBRA
Whatever you do this week will find a way of coming back on you, last week it was all about reaping what you sow and this week is still echoing the same message. You could be feeling full of energy enough to take up the sword and fight with your greatest enemy, although it is wise to not jump the gun with assumptions, but to check out the facts first. Direct confrontation is likely September 23rd to work better than underhand revenge tactics. October 22nd
...you don’t have to be a chef!
With Wimbledon and Henley Regatta just around the corner it’s time for a strawberry recipe – oh, and of course a Pimms! This recipe makes eight servings.
Easy Strawberry Torte Ingredients:
(serves 6 - 8)
● 1 x 200gr ready-made sponge
flan case ● 500gr of strawberries, hulled (middle core and stalk taken out) ● 50ml of masala wine or dark sweet sherry ● 600ml of double cream ● 500gr of mascarpone cheese ● Icing sugar, sifted
Directions 1. Put the sponge flan case on a flat work surface. Place a 23cm (9 inch) springform tin on top of the flan and with a small, sharp knife, cut around it. 2. Then, with a long, sharp knife, carefully cut through the sponge horizontally to give you two rounds of sponge. Place one half of the sponge neatly at the bottom of the tin and sprinkle with some (not all) of the masala wine, just to dampen the sponge - don't soak it. 3. Next, cut the hulled strawberries in half from top to bottom. Sit the strawberry halves around the inside edge of the tin with the middle of the strawberry facing outwards. Finely chop the remaining strawberries and set aside. 4. Now whip the cream until it forms soft peaks
and then add the mascarpone. Mix well whilst adding the reserved diced strawberries and the remaining masala wine. Add icing sugar to your taste (normally around 3 tablespoons will be enough) and give the mixture a final stir. 5. Spoon the mixture onto the sponge keeping the strawberry halves in the upright position and up against the side of the tin. Smooth the top of mixture until level. 6. Now carefully place the other half of the sponge on top of the levelled mixture. Chill in the fridge for a least 4 hours or preferably overnight. Then release the spring from the tin and lift off carefully. Smooth the sides of the torte and dust liberally with icing sugar before serving.

In history there has been countless battles that were not worth fighting, so if we are to learn from our past then the expression ‘choose your battles with care’ should apply to you this week. Some battles were definitely worth the fight; therefore, discernment and discrimination are your keywords when making your decisions. You may be dealing with past issues at the moment but you do have the ability to rise above the pettiness that surrounds them and come out victorious.

An old emotion from the past is triggered but this time it does not seem to affect you like it has before, this in itself allows you to discover first hand that you are not only stronger than you were but you are stronger than you ever thought you could be. Do not be afraid to ask for what you need, there are others that are looking out for you and will be only too willing to help. This is a great time to exchange information with others to broaden your horizons and outlook. Something wonderful is happening in your life, there is news that is bringing hope and optimism to many. Do not let fear or anger get in the way of this but allow this news to inspire, motivate and to feed your imagination. You have the ability and freedom right now to make choices that others can’t, obstacles literally fall away and if you keep your cool you should be able to use this to your advantage, you are being offered a cup overflowing with nectar, drink it wisely.

Pippa soaks up Spanish scene
Ageing holds no fears for Spanish beauty
Pippa Middleton may not be married to a future King but her starring role at her sister’s wedding has kept her firmly in the media spotlight. So much so that as she enjoyed strolling in the Spanish sunshine last weekend she was photographed wherever she went in the country’s capìtal, Madrid.
As Penelope Cruz set pulses racing while she helped promote her new film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, at the Cannes Film Festival, she looked every inch the flawless film star. And in a press conference at the festival, she confessed that although the movie is about the search for the fountain of eternal youth, she is very comfy in her own skin, thank you very much, and is happy to let nature takes its course. Penelope reckoned that she owes her relaxed attitude to ageing to her Spanish roots. “Birthdays are always something to celebrate. I’m looking forward to every step of the way, “she said. “Maybe it’s because I am from Spain, so I look at in a
different way than a place like Los Angeles or others in our industry. I will always be a Spanish actress in Hollywood, or wherever I work. There are a lot of things I keep from my roots and that is one of them – the way we look at ageing. I never want to be afraid of that. Change is good.” The actress gave birth to her first child, Leo, by fellow Spanish actor and husband Javier Bardem and discovered she was pregnant just as she was about to start filming the swashbuckling adventure. It posed a small problem for
director Rob Marshall who needed to disguise the fact that the actress’s body shape was changing while the movie was being shot. And the answer made the movie a family affair. Marshall hired the actress’s sister Monica for some scenes. Penelope said:” I did a couple of months training and did what I was able to do but I couldn’t do everything, just what was safe. Monica came at the end to do some scenes. She’s a dancer and very good with a sword because she has done a film herself.”
Pippa and a girl friend
took a turn in a rowing boat on the lake in Madrid’s Retiro Park but neither had to break into a sweat. Their 26-year-old companion George Perry, an ex boyfriend of Pippa’s and son of the Duke of Northumberland, handled the oars. During her break Pippa and friends visited some of the capital’s top night spots, and fitted in shopping and sightseeing.
The movie has been panned by some critics but Johnny Depp reckons that he would be up for a fifth outing for Captain Jack. “As long as people still want it, I am there,” he said. Meanwhile Actress Jane Fonda was also in Cannes and looking amazingly young for her 73 years when she appeared on the red carpet. She said she wished she had been brave enough not to do anything, but confessed to having more work done last year on her chin, neck and eyes, after vowing in 2000 not to go under the knife again. Trainees fight for chance to scrub stones You only have to watch Hell’s Kitchen to know that working for top chefs isn´t all fun and games. And trainees who worked for the world famous Spanish chef Ferran Adria can testify to that – one of their tasks was to pick up and scrub each stone that formed the path from the car park to the Michelin starred El Bulli restaurant. Their trials and tribulations have been charted in a new book,
The Sorcerer’s Apprentices: A Season at El Bulli, by Lisa Abend. She spent the 2010 season with the trainees who for six months worked 14 hour shifts without pay, and just one meal a day, so they could soak up all that Adria could teach them. Just becoming a trainee is a hard task in itself and many apply dozens of
times to prove they have staying power. Now there is talk of basing a movie on the book, and the author says it’s “kitchen slavery” which would be a “sort of boot camp film with a love story thrown in”. According to the book the trainees spend seven
hours each day on painfully dull tasks, like trimming the slime off anemones. But if they make it through the six months they can say they have worked in the best restaurant in the world, said Abend. El Bulli will close this July and reopen in 2014 as the El Bulli Foundation, a
research academy devoted to developing further the delights of molecular gastronomy. Adria plans to have a brainstorming hall in which all who work for him will focus on creativity and he believes that it would not be possible to combine his research with running his
famous restaurant. But you can still get a taste of Adria’s food. Head to the Paralel district of Barcelona where Adria has opened, in partnership with his brother Albert, the tapas bar called 41 Degrees. His four hour banquet at El Bulli cost £200 per head. His new venture offers plates at an affordable £7.

of kings Donkey milk helps kids Disease – and commoners with milk allergies Dr Giovanna Monti, a paediatrician in charge of the allergy unit at St Anna hospital in Turin, Italy, started studying the effects of donkey milk on babies and children in 2004. She said the milk – which is very similar to human milk is used for children who are allergic to certain proteins in cows' milk, which are often also present in formulated milk. Its other virtues are a low saturated fat content, high levels of omega three and six - the nutrients found in oily fish – and high levels of calcium, especially important for young children. It also contains the enzyme Lysozeme, which is anti-bacterial and can protect against intestinal infections. Allergies are on the rise in industrialised countries and lactose intolerance is especially high in southern Europe
and Italy in particular. While goat and sheep's milk have been traditional alternatives, they cannot be used in about 90% of cases of cows' milk allergies because the allergens are the same. Soya milk has also been a common alternative but soy allergies are also rising among the children. The use of donkey milk is far from a modern fad. The "father of medicine", Hippocrates, prescribed it for anything from snake bites to nosebleeds back in 460 BC. The Ancient Greeks fed it to their children, while the Romans used donkey milk as a cosmetic to soften the skin. And Cleopatra

the hills near Bologna. A donkey only has two teats and milking only produces about a litre a day per animal - a cow can produce more than 10 times that. And a donkey can only be milked for about six months after producing a foal, and even then only when the foal is close by. Borghi said these limitations mean donkey milk is likely to remain a niche health product.
Historically gout has been a male disease (threequarters of cases occur in men), but but is now common among women over 70. The underlying cause of gout is a high blood level of uric acid that forms irritating urate crystals that lodge in joints or soft tissues, causing intense pain. Uric acid is produced when the body metabolises purines, common components of many foods, especially organ meats, anchovies,

herring, asparagus and mushrooms. Other dietary contributors include excessive consumption of alcohol and possibly soft drinks containing fructose. Having a high level of uric acid is not, by itself, enough to cause gout – other contributing factors include medications such as thiazide diuretics, the first line of drug treatment for high blood pressure, and low-dose aspirin, commonly taken to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. On the other hand, aspirin in high doses — three or more grams a day — protects against gout by increasing uric acid excretion. The risk of gout is also higher among people with disorders that are increasingly common in modern society, including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure. Obesity can also make an attack of gout more likely. The symptoms are a rapid development of severe pain, redness and swelling, most often in the first joint of the big toe. Treatment necessarily begins with a change in lifestyle avoiding organ meats and consuming other meats, poultry and seafood in limited amounts (a mere four to six ounces a day). Alcohol is best avoided (or limited to one drink a day, if that) and sugary soft drinks should be avoided altogether. Caffeine appears to be protective; routine high intake of coffee (and perhaps also tea) can lower uric acid levels. Lots of water should be drunk throughout the day — one to two litres, plus another one to two litres of other liquids — to limit the buildup of urate and keep kidneys flushed. At the start of an attack, a hefty dose (800 milligrams) of ibuprofen, an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, reduces the pain and inflammation in the affected joint.

Richard Walker The Sunshine Golf and Calahonda District Darts League has now finished for this season and we have completed our presentation evening, which was received as an excellent night out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank "Ken", our sponsor. He has done everything he specified at the beginning of his role and has
Brenda Patrick May I ask; can you tell me how about/where do I go to obtain an Invalidity Permit. My UK permit was on display in my car whilst parked in an “Invalid” parking space at the Malaga Leroy Merlin shop but I was told by Police, who were checking on cars within the carpark, as a registered
Calahonda helped the league to flow brilliantly towards the end his contribution has not gone unnoticed from many people. I realise the costs involved in what he has done for us and I genuinely hope it has proved to be worthwhile for him and his business. I hope to have Ken on board again for next season, which begins around the beginning
of October. we will be looking at the best and most cost effective ways of sponsorship and brand awareness for next season and make it a worthwhile investment for everybody. We will all keep in touch ready for next season. Best regards and thanks all for your hard work and professional attitude.
by email resident I should have a Spanish (Andalucian) one. I was unaware of this and presumed the Invalidity permit was European and therefore valid. I wonder if you could give me some information as a News Reader I thought you would know! Regards and thanks
Editor says: I was under the impression that, as long as the sticker was ‘in date’ that these were valid anywhere within the EU too. Obviously I am wrong as well as Brenda. Can someone please write or email me and let me know the law on these?

Legacy of the Space Shuttle After two weeks of embarrassing delays the last ever flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour eventually launched last Monday 16th May on its trip to supply the International Space Station. It was the 134th launch of a Space Shuttle.
F
rom now on NASA will not have the ability to launch people into space. There is still an outside chance that NASA may get the go ahead to launch one more Shuttle later this year but it is looking increasingly unlikely that they will receive the funding for it. t was exactly 30 years ago, on April 12th 1981, that the first Shuttle Columbia made its maiden flight into Space and it was 50 years ago, on May 5th 1961, that astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space. he very first Space Shuttle was christened Enterprise after the Starship Enterprise from ‘Star Trek’. But Enterprise was not designed to actually fly in space though; it was just a test model to check out the flight capabilities and landing of the later shuttles. It was always piggy-backed onto a modified Jumbo jet and then released to glide back to Earth. It made three successful flights as far back as 1977. here were originally five space shuttles built, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28th 1986 killing all seven astronauts on board including school teacher Christa McAuliffe who was meant to have been the first civilian to fly into space and give lessons to school children back on Earth. Columbia was destroyed while re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere on February 1st 2003 and it was later discovered that a large piece of insulating foam had broken off during launch , smashing a hole in the wing of Columbia causing super heated gases to penetrate the heat shield and burn up inside the wing killing all 7 astronauts. ut despite these setbacks the Shuttles have performed some remarkable feats during their career. Most obvious of course is the construction of the International Space Station which could not have been achieved without the Shuttles. Each prefabricated module was lifted up into space inside the hold of a Shuttle and then connected to the ever growing station. In 1990 the
I Andrew Coates I have to hand it to you. You now seem to have articles written by “Those Who Can See Into The Future”. In the Out & About article on the Murcia region it says "But the sleepy nature of the area is all set to change". And on Wednesday afternoon it
Fuengirola certainly did. How did you know the earthquake was going to happen ?? Editor says: Spooky eh? We keep our eyes glued to the news and the world-wideweb and our ears on the radio right up until the time
we go to press. “Hold the front page” has a whole new meaning sometimes on a Tuesday night with last minute news being found. Unfortunately, we are not clairvoyant although, can you imagine how handy that would be?!

Hubble Space Telescope was also launched into orbit, again this could not have been done without the help of a Shuttle. After a fault was discovered on Hubble’s optics it looked like the $10 billion telescope was doomed to become the most expensive piece of space junk ever until a Shuttle once again came to the rescue and the crew managed to fix the problem 2 years later. ut personally I think that NASA stalled with the Space Shuttle. When I was a 10 year old boy watching the Moon landings in 1969 I was promised that ‘by the year 2000’ we would all be having holidays in space and flying to the Moon would be the norm as in the movie 2001 a Space Odyssey, but none of this came true. The passion for space flight died as soon as the space race had been won and the enormous costs involved became harder to justify. Plans to return to the Moon before 2020 have been shelved by President Obama and trips to Mars will almost definitely not happen in our life time. he Space Station will be the only remaining legacy of a once powerful space agency, all future flights to and from it to replace crews and resupply it with essentials will now be done by the Russians in their much cheaper Soyuz rockets. The three remaining Shuttles will be auctioned off (probably on EBay!) to remain on the ground as tourist attractions.

Ford’s B-Max baby MPV It's slightly bigger than a Fiesta, but more than a foot smaller than the C-Max compact crossover. This is Ford's answer to the Vauxhall Meriva - the BMax baby MPV. It's based on the existing (and highly successful) Ford Fiesta, but this car is bigger and a lot more practical. It has pillarless, sliding rear doors that make access to the cabin exceptionally easy. The Vauxhall Meriva is the car to beat in this class and Ford's B-Max is set to be a close rival. There's no doubt that it resembles the Fiesta, but the B-Max also looks a little like Ford's Iosis Max concept from the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.
It's expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which should have exceptionally low emissions and top fuel economy. That engine was first seen on the Start
concept at the
2010 Beijing Motor Show. The show car featured a panoramic glass roof, but that's likely to be a cost option on the final production model. The sliding pillar-less doors are the main attraction, not least because Ford is taking such an obvious stab at the Vauxhall Meriva with them. The company claims that the B-Max has a 1.5metre entrance to
the cabin, which is supposedly twice as wide as that of 'competitors'. Motor companies are hesitant to do them these days because they add a lot more weight -- cutting into fuel costs -- compared with hinged doors. The fact that it is a relatively small car means they can get away with it. It's small, but it's not the smallest Ford crossover cruising Europe. Estimated release date for the B-Max is 2012, and the cost is estimated to be from £16,000.
Cal Crutchlow loses finger tip in Qatar crash
Crutchlow's hand became trapped under the handlebar of his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 following a heavy crash at Turn 10 shortly before 9pm, causing the finger damage. Fortunately Crutchlow, who finished the final night in 15th position with just 28 laps, won't need surgery and should be able to take part in opening practice for the Qatar Grand Prix, at the same Losail circuit, as planned on Thursday evening. “The test certainly didn't end how I wanted and it is a real shame because we had made some changes to the balance of the bike that really helped my confidence with the frontend tonight. But I made a silly little mistake at Turn 10,” said Crutchlow.

12,000 users download parking app Trying to find a car parking space in a busy city can turn even the most placid of people into raging loonys. To that end phone developers in San Francisco have created an app that tells drivers where the nearest space is.The $20million SFpark project, which was introduced in San Francisco last month, works through a network of wireless sensors in streets and car parks, which can tell immediately when a spot has become free.
Stoner brings it home as Pedrosa suffers The Repsol Honda rider, winner of round one in Qatar, was fastest in every track session at Le Mans and although team-mate Dani Pedrosa was able to stay with the Australian for the first ten laps, the result was never in question after that. While Pedrosa and Marco Simoncelli were later tangling over second place, Pedrosa fractured his right collarbone in a controversial clash with Simoncelli - just as he was returning to fitness after six months of arm problems
following a broken left collarbone. Simoncelli earned a drive through penalty as a result. Stoner went on to win by a huge 14.2sec over third Repsol rider Andrea Dovizioso.
then former team-mate Lorenzo - the 2011 points leader - with four laps to go. But Dovizioso also got past the Nº1 and later wrestled second place away from Rossi by just 0.35sec.
Seven time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi achieved his first major milestone as a Ducati rider by taking a debut Desmosedici podium at Le Mans.
Both the Tech 3 riders Colin Edwards and Britain’s Cal Crutchlow fell; MotoGP rookie Crutchlow was first to tumble, out of ninth place on lap 6, spoiling a weekend in which he had qualified an excellent sixth on the grid.Edwards at least brought his damaged M1 home 13th and last for three world championship points. The Texan had been holding seventh when he fell at the first chicane on lap 14 of 28.
Ninth on the grid and sixth at the end of the first lap, Rossi spent the first half of the race just behind a battle for fourth between Yamaha's world champion Jorge Lorenzo and Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso Rossi rose to the occasion, overtaking Dovizioso and
e humble Transit is AA top choice Hundreds of Ford Transit vans have been ordered by the AA, increasing Ford’s share of the organisation’s 3,000-vehicle fleet to over 50 per cent. The AA is more than doubling the 247 Ford Transits ordered in 2010 with The AA roadside rescue fleet gaining 450 new Transit vans. A further 50 will support the AutoWindshields division, which already operates a 100 per cent Ford Transit fleet.
Magic May motoring for Classics Written by Jean Joss
Conditions last weekend could not have been better for SOL Classic Car Club's monthly run – bright sunshine but not too hot, through countryside sparkling and green after the recent rains. The majority of members brought their sports cars to make the most of it and a truly stunning collection turned up at the Monda start, Mercedes, Morgan, Austin Healey, Etype Jaguar, MGB, TR, Cobra, Porsche – a real feast for classic enthusiasts' eyes, in a variety of colours and all with gleaming paintwork. The saloon cars were not forgotten, among them was a newly renovated Rover P3, a Rolls Royce Silver Spur and a Vauxhall Ventura. From Monda the cars drove up to Alozaina, where thankfully the roads had been repaired, the patches of
new tarmac were much in evidence and reminded drivers just how bad the extensive rain damage had been. Then they turned off to Casarabonela along a beautiful winding route where the views were stunning and the roadsides thick with spring flowers, red splashes of crimson poppies, dark pink oleanders newly opening, delicate pink flowers and everywhere masses of bright yellow on taller bushes and low growing plants. These are routes to be enjoyed at their best, hard to believe that in a few short weeks the fields will be brown and the flowers all gone to seed and dead! There was a coffee stop at the Casaron de Bonela on the main road below the town and what a fabulous picture the cars made against the backdrop of the
pueblo blanco and the sierras above. Then it was off down the Guadalhorce valley through Pizarra, Cartama and Alhaurin el Grande where drivers could sample the brand new road down to Fuengirola which took so long to complete. Most impressive but watch your speed since the speed limits vary greatly and speed traps are an ever-present danger! The final stop was at the WOK bar in Fuengirola – a new experience for some club members and one that proved extremely popular. After a long and challenging drive it was a pleasant change not to have to wait for lunch to be served which, as we all know, can take a long time on Saturdays. And no-one was counting how many times you went back for more!
Sarah Dopson, AA fleet manager, said: “The order of 500 vans is in recognition of the quality and performance of the Ford Transit. The Transit meets all our requirements for

C.O.G.S Captain’s Day at Lauro Golf The C.O.G.S. second visit to Lauro Golf this season saw 31 players including 2 new members, Ian and Adam, make the short trip having feasted on a free breakfast at Leslie’s bar, supplied by moustachioed Captain Nig Bowler, and very much appreciated it was too !
way to dulling the pain by the late evening ! Thanks are owed to Russ and Ian for arranging the outing, Mike and his staff at Leslie’s bar for the buffet and beer when players returned, and again to Nig for his generosity earlier in the morning.
Due to recent maintenance at the course the society were given holes 19 - 9 to play on a busy day of sport around the globe, not to mention the course itself, although all the members agreed on what good condition the course was in.
The results for the day were as follows:
So, on a rather slow day’s golf the society’s early season leader, Andy (el bandito) Macfarlane, increased his lead at the top of the table by winning on the day for the first time in his 5 years of trying. Aided considerably by birdies at both the 26th and 27th holes ( must have been the brekkie), Andy rightfully earned the Captain’s Day trophy with the competition being strong on a day of fairly high scores in the early summer heat.

Test Match at Cartama as season hots up There will be a 30 overs a side Test Match at the Cartama Oval starting at 10.30am on Saturday (May 21st).The two sides will consist of 11 players all recruited from the response to the regular articles in the News. Whatever the result of the cricket, we are now in a position to field two teams. This is a real achievement in such a short time and I'd like to thank all those who have made it possible. We now have a real mix of cricketers, some with great experience, some that have not played for a long time, and some who until recently had never held a bat 'in anger'. We also have our first Spanish guy on
board, who until last week didn't know anything about the game, but who has overnight turned into a sensation, both with the bat and the ball. We will enter one team into the existing Costa del Sol league and the other team will play friendlies. The name of the new club cannot be revealed just yet as we are in negotiation with some major sponsors. Hopefully all will be revealed next week. Novak Djokovic continued his remarkable unbeaten run with victory over Rafael Nadal in the final of the Rome Masters. The Serb, who was pushed all the way by Andy Murray in Saturday's semi-final, played some superb tennis to triumph 6-4 6-4 and make it 37 wins this year 39 in total. He looked comfortable and never allowed Nadal, a five-time title winner in Rome, to take the initiative.
Nadal was forced into doing most of the chasing and looked second-best. The Serb is now closing in
on Guillermo Vilas's record of 46 consecutive wins, set in 1977. Djokovic, who won the Australian Open in
January, can add Rome to a list of titles won in 2011 that also includes titles in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Belgrade and Madrid. He had beaten Nadal in three finals already this year - in Madrid, Miami and Indian Wells - but there was still room for some breathtaking tennis at times as he recorded a second straight win on clay over Nadal, the king of the surface.
Choi wins at T.P.C while McDowell is left needing some T.L.C. Choi had reason to celebrate this win after being winless on the PGA Tour for three years, he took the outright lead with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th in regulation, saved par on the 18th with a putt from just inside 5 feet to close with a 2-under 70 and kept his nerves steady.

I just made a few sour looking swings coming in there.” It had been a long day on the course - 32 holes for Toms, 27 holes for Choi, because of the rain-delayed third round that had to be completed on Sunday morning. But one man was left standing at the end South Korea’s K.J. Choi.
Keiran wins double silver in Granada Kieran Taylor, the 16 year old Taekwondo exponent from Arroyo, won two well deserved silver
medals whilst competing in Granada last Saturday night. A member of the Benalmadena Taekwondo Club in Arroyo, Kieran was actually beaten by a fellow club member. And so far, this season is proving harder than most for the young star. Three weeks ago, having made the very long trip to Galicia to compete, Kieran picked up an injury during a bout with a Portugese black belt, when a very heavy low kick put him out of contention for the win but he
did manage to pick up a bronze medal. His next tournament will be when he defends his title at the Benalmadena Open when he hopes to see some

Malaga secure La Liga status
Sporting Axarquia rugby news SPOTLIGHT
Athletic Bilbao 1 - 1 Malaga
Axarquia Rugby Club have finished their season with a fantastic display winning the official fourth annual “Copa de Andalucia” on Sunday May 15th at the Fernando Hierro stadium in VelezMalaga.
Malaga travelled to their last away game of the season having won their previous 5 games, and had leapfroged up to 10th in the league. This however didn't make them mathematically safe, so they knew they needed at least a point to secure survival. With Rondon getting injured last week and Duda and Camacho suspended, Juanmi, Maresca and Sandro Silva all came in to the starting eleven. Malaga began the game well and after just 5 minutes the in-form Julio Baptista had a great chance that went just wide of the goal. Bilbao then had a chance with
Fernando Llorente lashing a shot wide of the post before Castillo saw his drive tipped round the post by Caballero in the Malaga goal.

being put through by Jesus Gamez but saw his chance blocked by the Bilbao defender. Malaga took the lead with just three minutes to go in the first half though. Midfielder Recio was picked out by Juanmi's pass and he made no mistake as he coolly slotted home from the edge of the area. Bilbao though were level 10 minutes into the second half, Demichelis brought down Llorente in the box, with the Argentina international seeing red following his second bookable offence. upright. As the ball came down the referee adjudged it to have hit Eliseu's arm and unbelievably gave a second penalty, which this time Lopez slotted home. Malaga's 10 men held on to gain the point and secure their safety. This Saturday at 6pm sees Barcelona travel to La Roselada. With them already having wrapped up La Liga and Malaga being safe, lets hope it will still be an entertaining fixture.
