AGRICULTURAL CRISIS - National news
Cucumber scare devastates exports Spain will demand millions in compensation from the EU for the huge losses suffered by the country's agricultural producers after Germany blamed Andalucian cucumbers for a deadly E.coli outbreak. The government had accused Germany of “spreading alarm” and needlessly damaging trade – and yesterday Hamburg's health department admitted that the outbreak, which has already left 16 people dead and infected more than 1,400, was not caused by Spanish cucumbers as claimed. It said tests had revealed that the variety of E.coli found in patients' excrement did not match the tests made on the cucumbers.
The statement came just hours after Environment minister Rosa Aguilar said before leaving for an emergency EU meeting on the outbreak that Spain would demand compensation from the EU for the huge losses caused to Spanish producers by the scare. Two Spanish greenhouses identified last week as sources for the outbreak have been closed and agricultural producers have reported losses of

After the paper had been put to bed last Tuesday night, I trundled my way home in my car and started weaving from side to side on my campo road to miss all the huge potholes as usual. After around two years of having to do this, with each week adding another weave because of a brand spanking new 1 foot deep hole, you can imagine my surprise when I saw that the holes had been filled with a lump of tarmac - and not just a couple of them this time - the whole lot had been filled. Of course, one doesn’t expect them to be level with the road so instead of going down holes you’re now going over lumps but I assume that, in the fullness of time, said lumps will be flattened by all the cars and lorries going over them. Could this already be something to do with a change of government in our local council? I very much doubt it but I am looking forward to not spending hundreds of euros in the coming year fixing my car! Also, someone has scraped the acequia road that had been getting beyond a joke as well as the track down to my house, dangerous Ellis and another neighbour have been out there with a digger scraping off all the lumps that have formed in the middle of the road thereby forming great dips either side for the cars to fall into into and damage themselves. So..... now we have an almost flat top road, an almost flat acequia road and a very nearly flattened track...... whoop de doo! And well done dangerous for saving all our cars from more expensive repairs!

The outbreak - which the Sweden-based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has called "one of the largest described of HUS worldwide and the largest ever reported in Germany" - has been particularly severe in the Hamburg area. It has baffled scientists because HUS normally affects children under the age of five, but nearly 90 per cent of victims are adults and twothirds are women.
Case in Spain On Tuesday it was revealed that a 43-year-old man with symptoms of E.coli had been admitted to the Hospital Donostia in San Sebastian. The man told
doctors he had eaten vegetables during a recent visit to Germany, but could not remember if cucumbers were among them. Spanish athlete Elena Espeso has been in hospital in Hamburg for the past nine days. She had been competing in Czechoslovakia and Germany and told reporters that given the strict diet she had to follow she knew she had not eaten cucumbers in either of those two countries or back home in Spain in recent weeks.
Exporter speaks out Antonio Lavao, the manger of the Frunet export company in Malaga told Spain's TVE that the
cucumbers had been contaminated in Hamburg. He said his company sent a cargo of cucumbers to the Benhken import company on May 12th.
e cross will stand
On May 16th, the manager of Benhken rang him to report that a pallet of cucumbers which had not been encased in plastic had overturned in Hamburg's central market and that he “intended to repack them as best he could”.
Presidency minister Ramon Jauregui met for the first time on Monday with the commission of 12 historians, Benedictine monks, philosophers and jurists set up to decide the future of the Valley of the Fallen, the huge monument Francisco Franco built in memory of those killed during the Civil War.
Meanwhile, Andrés Góngora, provincial secretary of the farm and ranch umbrella organization COAG in Almeria accused Germany of “very irresponsibly pointing the finger at a country's entire industry without any proof".
Its continued existence has upset those who want every vestige of Franco removed although according to Sr Jauregui, most people seem to be in favour of keeping the towering cross that can be seen from miles around on a clear day. One of the
commission's objectives is to reach an agreement on what to do with the remains of Gen Franco and Falange founder Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera who are buried there, along with thousands of known and unknown soldiers. Several families of Republican soldiers want to recover the remains of their loved ones and the commission will have to decide if this is physically possible, given that the underground ossuaries contain thousands of bones jumbled together. Sr Jauregui said the commission has five months in which to produce its report.
Press asked to self-censor The minister for health, social policy and equality, Leire Pajin, has asked the media to play down reports on gender murders to avoid copycat killings. She said she was not trying to muzzle the press but figures showed that one gender killing was usually followed by two or three more with lulls in between each spate of murders. The 2010 report on gender violence showed

PM's successor proclaimed Deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba (left) was proclaimed last Saturday as the man the Socialist Party's federal committee want to succeed José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. The prime minister will continue to be the party's general secretary until the next party conference, which is not expected to be held until after the March 2012 general election. The federal committee meeting was called by Sr Zapatero to put an end to the infighting that was growing around his pledge to have his successor chosen by primaries immediately after the May 22nd regional and municipal elections. Sr Rubalcaba and defence minister Carme Chacon were the two main contenders but Sra Chacon withdrew on May 25th because she believed that internal opposition to the primaries was endangering the unity of the party and
even the stability of the government, as well as tarnishing Zapatero’s image. However, other aspiring candidates have until June 13th to put their names forward and if one or more of them obtain a minimum of 10 per cent of party members' votes a primary will be held on June 26th and the winner will be proclaimed on July 2nd. However, it is not expected that anyone will come forward and that Sr Rubalcaba will lead the party in the general election next year. On accepting the federal committee's support, Sr Rubalcaba said: “We are not going into the election to obtain a dignified defeat but to obtain a democratic victory”.

Illegal sale of helicopters busted Police arrested five Spaniards and three Iranians in Madrid and Barcelona last week who were involved in an illegal sale of nine military transport helicopters to Iran. As part of Operation Nam, police raided industrial sites in the two cities where they found the helicopters and spares for a total value of â‚Ź100 million. Police said the helicopters, which are used to transport troops, military equipment, and spares were being prepared for assembly and disassembly before export
to Iran and Venezuela, under the cover of legal aviation repairs.
The Royal Household announced on Monday that King Juan Carlos will have an operation on his right knee some time during the next two weeks to relieve pains that have been making it painful to walk much in recent months. He has often been replaced by Crown Prince
Felipe at ceremonies that would have required him to stand for any length of time.
Police said they found out about the arrival in Spain of the Iranian purchasers who had come to formalise the deal which led to their operation being launched. The Spanish companies involved are
accused of ignoring export requirements by failing to obtain licences for the export of military material for goods that could have military applications. Under UN sanctions adopted last year, Iran is banned from buying heavy weapons such as attack helicopters and missiles.
Ibiza fire setter jailed without bail King will have op An Ibiza judge jailed a 50year-old Argentine last week without bail on charges of serious negligence after the brazier he was using to smoke out a beehive set fire to nearby trees, which resulted in a blaze that had consumed nearly 1,600 hectares in the island's

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze over the weekend and it was largely extinguished on Monday by heavy rainfall. However, the authorities said it would not be completely extinguished until the end
of the week. Some 18 houses were burned, several others were badly damaged and two cars and a motorhome were destroyed but no-one died in the fire, although several people received medical attention for smoke-related problems.
The King, aged 73, also suffers from a hip problem as a result of a skiing accident he had several years ago. It had already been announced that King
Juan Carlos would not be competing in any more sailing competitions, one of his favourite sports. He was operated on for a benign nodule on the lung a year ago and while he appeared to make a full recovery, the state of his health has been a cause of concern.

Thousands of protesters who have been camping out in Madrid's central CALATAYUD Puerta del Sol square since May 15th have voted to continue their mass sit- Accident holds up AVE in against the government's economic austerity measures. The derailment of the Zaragoza-Catalonia local fast train at The numbers peaked just before the May 22nd local elections and have dropped since. The Madrid regional government, which has its headquarters in the Puerta del Sol, has resisted attempting to dislodge the protesters, as Barcelona's city authorities tried to do last Friday on the pretext that the Plaza de Catalunya had to be cleared to make way for the celebration of the expected win by Barcelona FC over Manchester United on Saturday. Baton-wielding riot police used rubber bullets and water cannons to clear the square, causing dozens of injuries, but the protesters were back again the next day. However, the Puerta del Sol protesters tried to appease local shop owners who had claimed their placards and motives were bad for business by removing a large number of them over the weekend –
but only from the smallest establishments. Other businesses are happy to cater to the protesters, like the 24-hour pizzeria which has increased its sales by 200 per cent since the protest started. The protesters, calling themselves "los indignados" (the indignant), "15-M" and Democracia Real Ya (DRY, Real Democracy Now), are demanding jobs, better living standards, a fairer system of democracy and changes to the Socialist government's austerity plans. On Monday, they voted to call another mass protest for June 15th, when they will try to stop the eviction of a family in the Tetuan district of Madrid. They hope to be joined by protesters the world over on October 15th. Meanwhile, similar sit-ins in other cities across the country continue but with dwindling numbers of participants.

Eight AVE trains heading from Barcelona to Madrid and four in the opposite direction carrying around 3,000 passengers ground to a halt when the front carriage of the local train jumped the rails as it entered Calatayud station. The 47 passengers on the train were taken to their destinations by bus. MADRID
Workers want less noise A recent survey of office workers has shown that more than half of those questioned believe a reduction in noise in their work places would increase their production. Another 30 per cent said it would reduce their stress. However, 5 per cent said less noise would be boring. The phrases they most hated to hear from their bosses were “you still haven’t done it”, “we have to talk” and “this is urgent”. “Have you a minute” was the least hated. MADRID
US citizens warned In the lead up to the municipal and regional elections on May 22nd, the US embassy advised Americans to avoid areas where crowds were camping out in generally peaceful protests against the economic crisis and other social ills. In a statement, the embassy specifically mentioned Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Seville, Valencia and Granada. The warning was later taken up in Washington by the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security (OSAC), a security alert system for American citizens and companies abroad.

Guatemala, 865,000 people are at risk of food insecurity; in India, where people spend more than twice the proportion of their income on food than UK residents; in Azerbaijan, wheat production fell 33% last year due to poor weather, and in East Africa, where eight million people currently face chronic food shortages due to drought, with women and children
among the hardest hit. The World Bank has also warned that rising food prices are pushing millions of people into extreme poverty. Oxfam wants nations to agree new rules to govern food markets, to ensure the poor do not go hungry. It said world leaders must increase transparency in commodities markets and regulate futures
markets; scale up food reserves; end policies promoting biofuels and invest in smallholder farmers, especially women. "We are sleepwalking towards an avoidable age of crisis," said Oxfam chief executive Barbara Stocking. "One in seven people on the planet go hungry every day despite the fact that the world is capable of feeding everyone."

Oxfam has warned that unless world leaders take action to reform the global food system, the prices of staple foods will more than double by 2030. An eighth plant - the Kruemmel facility in northern Germany, which was already offline and has been plagued by technical problems - would also be shut down for good. Six
others would go offline by 2021 at the latest and the three newest by 2022. Germany's nuclear industry has argued that an early shutdown would be hugely damaging to the country's industrial base. Before March's moratorium on the older power plants, Germany relied on nuclear power for 23% of its energy.
The government has passed a law to return almost 17 million acres of land stolen by armed groups during the country's 25year-long civil conflict to the hundreds of thousands of families who were driven from their land. Agriculture Minister Juan Camilo Restrepo said paramilitaries, rebels and drug dealers had used violence and fraud to take the land. He called the passing of the law a historic move, but experts have estimated it could take a decade to restore the land to its lawful owners. CANADA

Army officers wanted for Jesuit killings Spanish National Court judge Eloy Velasco has ordered the arrest of 20 military officers from El Salvador for the 1989 killing of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter. The priests, five of whom were Spanish, worked at the Central American University. Security forces suspected them of sympathising with leftwing rebels of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). The attack was considered brutal even in a civil war known for its violence against civilians. It led to a crisis in El Salvador's relations with the United States, which had helped the country's armed forces
against the rebels, and intensified international pressure on the government to begin peace negotiations. The case was filed using Spain's universal jurisdiction law, which holds that some crimes are so grave that they can be tried anywhere, regardless of where the offences were committed. Among those indicted are Col Rene Emilio Ponce, head of the Armed Forces' joint chiefs of staff at the time, who ordered the
killings, and Gen Rafael Humberto Larios, minister of defence at the time, who was present at the meeting where Col Ponce ordered the killing. Eighteen more members of the Salvadoran armed forces have been indicted on charges of crimes against humanity and terrorist killings. Around 70,000 people were killed during the 12-year civil war before a 1992 United Nations-brokered agreement brought peace to the country.
Australia suspends live cattle trade The Australian government has suspended the live export of cattle to four abattoirs in Indonesia, where steers were filmed being whipped, kicked and slashed with knives - some might still have been conscious when they were
dismembered. The Greens and some independent MPs, whose support is crucial to the minority Labour government, want the trade with Indonesia, Australia’s largest export market for live cattle,to be banned. An independent
review will investigate the supply chain for live exports up to and including the point of slaughter. The Australian live export industry has shipped more than 6.5m cattle to Indonesia for slaughter over the last 20 years.

Lockie, 22, was found with a head injury and died. The Foreign Office is providing consular assistance and has warned Britons about the possibility of attack. It is in touch with police and local authorities.

The Duchess of Cornwall has put French noses out joint by remarking that the quality of English sparkling wine was so good it should be called champagne. The Duchess’s comments came last week as she and the Prince of Wales toured the Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey, which has won an award for producing the best rose wine in the world. She pointed out to vineyard tour guide Mona Koening that English sparkling wine is made in exactly the same way, with the same grapes grown in very similar soil. “It’s so annoying not to be able to call it champagne, when it is
champagne,” she said. It drew a less than sparkling response from Olivier Prothon, at the French Trade Commission, who said: “The law is the law, if you want to change it, you can lobby to do so...champagne is our brand.” Champagne is a word that can only be used to describe the sparkling wine made around the French city of Reims and the drink is protected by the same European labelling laws that ensure that Cornish pasties come from Cornwall, and Kentish ale comes from Kent. Melton Mowbray pork pies, Cornish clotted cream,
Stilton, Jersey Royal Potatoes and Welsh lamb also enjoy European protected status. Champagne houses have long fought to ensure that only their products could carry the name, many years before the European ruling. Last year Camel Valley Wines in Cornwall beat more than 450 bottles, including the most famous champagne houses, to be named the best sparkling wine in the world, in the International Wine Challenge. And Marks and Spencer said last week that English wine was its fastest growing wine category, with sales up 70 per cent on the year before.
No snail’s pace for rescue services Britain’s fire services have spent at least £3.5 million on rescuing animals during the last three years, newly published statistics have shown. The BBC Radio 4 programme You and Yours used the Freedom Of Information Act to obtain the information, which revealed that fire services have come to the aid of a variety of animals, including cats, dogs, ducklings and a snail. A nine man crew with
ladders and net rescued a cat stuck for three days 60 feet up a tree near WestonSuper-Mare in Somerset. In total more than 2,400 cats, 2,180 dogs and 1,700 horses were rescued. Crews also came to the aid of 2,090 birds including 1,244 seagulls, 159 pigeons, 57 swans and 12 parrots, as well as 26 foxes, 19 squirrels, seven ferrets, seven badgers, 10 hamsters, 15 snakes, 11 fish and seven dolphins. Only four of 56 fire services passed on the cost of the rescue to the owners.
The Taxpayers Alliance questioned the use of resources but the Chief Fire Officers Association said that distressed animals could pose a danger to people who tried to mount their own rescue bids, and cited a road having to be dug up after a man got stuck in a drain trying to rescue a cat. The snail, stuck halfway up a wall, was rescued by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service after it was called out by a distressed elderly lady.

Record price for Titanic plan A hand drawn plan of the Titanic has been sold for what is believed to be a world record price for memorabilia of the doomed passenger liner. It had been expected to fetch up to £150,000 but it raised world-wide interest and has been bought by a private collector for £220,000. The 30 foot long cross section plan was commissioned by the British Board of Trade to aid the 36 day inquiry into the sinking of the vessel in 1912. It was mounted on linen, prepared in Indian ink and had red and green chalk marks showing where it was believed ice had penetrated the bulk heads. It hung in the inquiry
room so the 96 witnesses could refer to it using a pointer to help establish the cause of the sinking of the ship described as unsinkable. After the inquiry concluded that the loss of the ship`had been brought about by excessive speed the plan was returned to the Titanic’s owners, the White Star Line. It passed into private hands, and according to the auctioneers, had never been seen on public display. It was sold on Saturday by auctioneers Henry Aldridge and Son, in Devizes, Wiltshire – other items of
Titanic memorabilia included a set of keys for one of the 1st class toilets, a draughtsman’s plan, and an account of wages revealing that surviving crew had their wages stopped by White Star after the Titanic sank. Titanic sank on April 15th 1912 after hitting an iceberg on her maiden voyage to New York. She was the largest passenger steamship in the world and more than 1,500 people died when she went down. Exhibitions and other events are being planned to celebrate the centenary of the tragedy next year.

When Debbie Murden popped into her local McDonalds drive- through she was surprised to be told that she and her vehicle were causing a safety hazard and she would not be able to pick up her Big Mac. Debbie, aged 42, regularly nips out to the pub and calls in at other restaurants in her vehicle a carriage drawn by a Welsh cobb called Dago. But staff at the Alfreton, Derbyshire branch of McDonalds told her that they feared she was in breach of safety regulations. Debbie pointed out that she had used the McDonalds a couple of weeks earlier and added that there were no signs prohibiting horse drawn carriages. A company spokesman later apologised that she had been disappointed by being turned away and for the inconsistency, but said that the drive-through lanes were custom built for cars, vans and trucks and

safety first was paramount. Mrs Murden said later that she travelled regularly on dual carriageways and often parked up her horse and carriage in pub car parks while she nipped in for a drink. “I was surprised as I have never been refused before. We often stop off at pubs...it’s usually no bother and mostly is a good talking point.” She did not go hungry – she set Dago off at a brisk trot to the nearby KFC. A spokesman said later: “We look forward to seeing her again.”
Karen was checking the sofa before putting it on the shop floor when she discovered an envelope containing £1,305 in bank notes. The people who had donated the sofa were traced because they had filled in a Gift Aid form, and the daughter and granddaughter of the original owner came in to collect the money. They donated £100 to the British Heart Foundation as a thank-you gesture. The sofa had belonged to an elderly lady who had died, and her family had had no idea that she had secreted the envelope between the cushions. The sofa is now on sale for £150 - minus cash and fluff.

Ceremony success as royals cheered Thousands turned out in Malaga on Sunday to greet King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia who had arrived for the last of the Armed Forces Day ceremonies, which started in the city on Friday. The Royal family were greeted with cheers and hundreds of waving national flags. Defence minister Carme Chacon slipped in almost unnoticed through the back of the General Torrijos Square where the ceremony was held and was on the platform with the top armed forces brass before the crowd could give her their customary “politicians' welcome”. They reserved their boos and jeers for Junta de Andalucia regional premier Antonio Griñan and
other officials from Seville. The crowd turned happy again when a parachutist descend with a huge national flag and jets zoomed across the sky leaving a trail of the flag's colours – in bands of red, gold and red. The ceremony of honouring the flag and those who had died in Afghanistan and Iraq lasted less than an hour, probably because King Juan Carlos has a knee problem and cannot remain standing for long. However no reason
had been given for cancelling the customary march past which the crowd had been expecting. The Royal family, armed forces brass and politicians had already left the square before there were a few ugly incidents among the crowd, many of whom had turned up as early as 6 am to get a good place from which to watch the march past. No serious injuries were reported but it marred what had otherwise been a good day out.
Both the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular have said they will seek a pardon on humanitarian grounds for Miguel Montes Neiro, 61, considered the country's longest-serving prisoner who is currently in Huelva jail. He was first jailed in 1966 and has been in and out of prison since then. He escaped several times which only served to add more years to his original sentence. Montes suffers from hepatitis C and is currently on hunger strike. His lawyer asked for a pardon for him in April and the petition is currently being studied by the Justice ministry.

Andalucia stars in NYT Andalucia made a rare appearance on the front page of the New York Times last week, next to a report on President Barack Obama's visit to the UK. Titled “Chasing riches from Africa to Europe and finding only squalor”, El Mundo newspaper said that the contrast between the photos of shacks housing Africans and those of President Obama with the British Royal family in all their finery could not have been more negative. The NYT article claimed that unspecified
“authorities” estimated that there were “perhaps” 10,000 immigrants living in Andalucia's woods and forests, among “rats and snakes, mice and fleas”, the general secretary of the Landworkers Union SOC, Diego Cañamero is quoted as saying. Cañamero also told the newspaper that the bars “turn them away because
they smell and are bad for business”, although it also pointed out that many are Moslem and don't drink. The paper said mayors of several towns refused to comment on the situation or said “it was too big for them”. El Mundo implies that the NYT reporter had been set up by a union that has strong anarchist roots.

Bringing out the inner artist When the going gets tough, the tough get tougher – a very apt saying for these tough times when many people are having to turn to old talents and achievements in order to keep body and soul together, as artist Chandy Haggett knows only too well. Having spent the past 10 years bringing up two children on her finca outside Coin, she managed to produce a lot of paintings while looking after an assortment of dogs, cats, geese, rabbits and sheep. Chandy says they were the best years of her life but now she has to start doing something with all those works lined up against the walls. Her unusual, individual and modern style has somehow managed to capture the essence of the mellow life of the white villages in Andalucia that was once so common but now has to be specially sought out. Gossiping old widows in black, cats sleeping in doorways, farmers snoozing under olive trees while herds of goats roam among rocks and canvas, tiny ventas where locals sample tapas and sip sangria under gnarled grape vines and blues skies, and cows grazing in scorched meadows with hills and white farms in the distance – none of these are everyday sights any more, except for those who have one of Chandy's paintings hanging on a wall. Going round the markets and galleries is very time consuming so Chandy decided to look for buyers and distributors on the net. Although she only set up her website quite recently – www-chandyhaggett.com – she's already been contacted by people in Spain, the UK and the United States who are interested in acquiring or distributing her work. Now she is going one step further – she wants to help other people to experience the satisfaction of creating
their own work of art in a fun setting. She can now offer hand silk screen painting days at her finca which consist of a morning's work in her studio, breaking for a campo lunch of bread, cheese , salami and salads and a jug of sangria to be followed by an afternoon work session. At the end of

Summer Fairs to enjoy The Cudeca shop in Alhaurín el Grande will be holding its annual Summer Fair, on Saturday June 4th from 10am until 12pm, at the Plaza de la Legión (across from the Medical Centre). ç They will have live music, tombola, plants,
homemade cakes, clothing, toys, books, bric a brac, jewellery etc. Pop along, enjoy a great morning out and support your local Hospice. For more information, please contact the shop directly on 952 594 010. Then on Sunday June
5th at Sol y Sombra (formerly Hoyo 19) the FAMA summer fair will take place. To reserve a place if you want to run a stall at €15, call Max on 659 102 279. You will be able to get lunch and drinks from the bar.
Don’t forget to get your animals’ blood sampled. Most of you will say that you have no intentions of going back to the UK, but you never know. The vet in Alhaurin el Grande used by Animals In Distress (AID) is now only charging €50 per animal but people have mentioned to AID that some vets are charging about €100 euro per animal, so shop around. If your cat/dog has never had a rabies vaccination then the new law stipulates that it will need to have two lots before the blood sample can be taken. This means giving your animal a rabies vaccination and waiting one month for the next vaccination - after another month the blood sample can be taken and sent away. The results will come back between 3 weeks and 3 months depending on which laboratory it is sent to. If the antibodies have
taken then your animal can travel with you 6 months after the blood sample was taken. The total wait could therefore be 8 months. If your pet has had previous rabies vaccinations and the last one is still in date then a blood sample can be done and if the antibodies have taken then your pet can travel in 6 months time. Pets going to countries like Holland, Belgium etc. can travel more or less straight away as it is the rabies vaccination that is required and not the blood sample. Just remember that if your cat or dog is not ready it will cost you approx €6-12 per night for 6 to 8months in kennels. This is €1000 to €1500 for a cat and €2000 to €2500 for a dog. Prices do vary and also most kennels do give a discount for more than one animal so, again, shop around. Report by Jan Animals In Distress

he Socialists were supposed to launch primaries to pick Zapatero’s successor on Monday, May 23rd, but the Partido Popular’s rampage across the country’s political map the previous day put paid to that. It was the worst defeat ever suffered by the party in any of the national, regional or local elections held since the transition to democracy in 1977, so once again circumstances forced Zapatero into another U-turn. He had sworn that his successor would be chosen democratically by party members and it looked as if he really believed that after such a shocking defeat, the party could then submit itself to what threatened to be a very acrimonious process and survive. He was obviously still anchored on Cloud Nine. Then Basque regional premier Patxi Lopez called for a special party congress to discuss the reasons for the defeat and select an heir later this year. This brought Zapatero down with a bump. Lopez has been quietly coping with an extremely difficult situation in the Basque Country ever since he was elected three years ago and people have tended to forget him. However, Zapatero seems to have realised that Lopez could be the man who will take over the party, knock some sense into it and lead it down a less ideological, more realistic road. He had to be stopped.
L
opez’s sudden popping out of the woodwork forced one of the two main contenders in the primaries, defence minister Carme Chacon, to consult Zapatero and all the party bigwigs, by phone or in person, to test the waters before she officially threw her hat into the ring, having declared her interest in doing so in February. We’ll probably never know any details about the talks, but we can suspect that Zapatero told her the other contender, deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba,(pictured ) had a better chance of rallying the party. But whatever she heard or had said to her, she has looked quite shell shocked ever since. The upshot was that she announced her decision to stand down last Thursday. Her sentiments were noble. She said the increasing rejection of primaries was endangering the unity of the party and even the stability of the government, as well as tarnishing Zapatero’s image so she had decided to do the decent thing and drop out. Just hours later, Zapatero announced that he had called a meeting of the “barons” (regional leaders) later in the week to discuss the matter.
T
he outcome was a foregone conclusion. Most of the barons had been mentioning deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba as Zapatero’s natural heir for months, long before the PM announced he wouldn’t run next year. The PP landslide in the regional and municipal elections made it even more necessary for the party to unite behind a strong candidate –
someone with experience and proven political ability – if it were to have any chance of winning next year’s general election.
W
hen accepting the nomination last Saturday, Rubalcaba said he had no intention of being a caretaker candidate, that is, someone who would see the party through an election it had no hope of winning then quietly dropping out of the picture. Rubalcaba insisted he would be on the road from Monday onwards, to rally the party faithful and lead them to victory in ten months time.
T
hey were brave words but unless there is an economic miracle between now and the election, which is highly unlikely, the best Rubalcaba can hope to achieve is to reduce the majority that the PP appears to be heading for, according to the polls. He could then retire from political life, as he claims he wants to, and then the real leadership battle would begin.
W
ith Zapatero off the scene, the old guard, which includes Rubalcaba himself, Speaker Jose Bono and a handful of regional leaders, would soon put his lightweight minions in their place. These include Chacon, whose main achievement seems to have been to be the first pregnant defence minister, and current health minister Leire Pajin, whose smugness earned her the nomination of second most hated public figure a few months back. They, and several others, are often referred to as “las chicas de Zapatero”, women who have been given government positions that they are simply not qualified to fill. However, they make it look as if he really believes in gender equality (he still hasn’t done anything about equal pay for equal work), when in fact their incompetence simply makes him look better than he is – which is what he wants.
I
’m sure Patxi Lopez isn’t the only man out there who can save the party, but he would be a figure the old guard could support, who would attract moderate left- and even right- wingers who want realistic policies that improve the standard of living for everyone and not ideology-based policies that favour only certain sectors of the population.
A
s the Spanish are wont to say – que Dios me oiga - may God hear me.
ome are likening it to a Bulgarian party congress while others are calling it the night of the long knives. But the episode that occurred after last week’s fast-paced events which saw the emergence of deputy prime minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba as the Socialists’ preferred candidate is an animal with a lot of tails. There are bitter grumbles in the Socialist camp and many are blaming, albeit quietly, prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for the May 22nd whopping defeat at the polls – the worst in the party’s history. His austerity policies and reforms, needed to keep Spain afloat, have taken a huge political toll. After crushing losses in the regional and local races, Patxi López,(pictured) the Basque regional premier, launched the first spear when he called for a party congress to elect next year’s Socialist candidate. López reckoned that a congress opposed to a primary would help to strengthen the Socialists and would allow them to discuss a broad range of changes in party policies to better prepare themselves for next year’s race. Rubalcaba and defence minister Carme Chacón were seen as the two top contenders vying to become Zapatero’s successor, although the deputy prime minister always appeared to have more support.
O
n Thursday, a disheartened Chacón – some in her inner circle say she was madder than a cat caught in a beehive – announced at a news conference that she would not seek the nomination for the benefit of the party. Just two days before, Chacón complained to Zapatero that a party congress would give her an unfair disadvantage in the internal race to become his successor. The prime minister agreed: a party congress could also lead to his being ousted as secretary general. In other words, Zapatero would not only be a lame duck PM but a Socialist leader without any power inside of his own party during the months winding down before the general elections. Such a split in the ranks could also pave the way for early elections, Chacón has said, and the Socialist wouldn’t be able to complete their plan to introduce more reforms. The main suspect, they believed, who was trying to throw a monkey wrench in an already rickety organisation and maybe even seize the moment to wrest power from Zapatero: Patxi López. Even more troubling for the PM and his entourage was the fact that many Socialist leaders in the regions, the so-called “party barons,” were backing Patxi’s call.
T
he Basque leader said he was surprised and hurt by the allegations and believed that the party must be united because it is a long tough battle. The uphill race has already been marked by the fact that the PP has been leading the Socialists for the past year and a half by as much as 10 points.
C
hacón has not explained publicly how a congress would have hurt her chances, but she does know that, unless she was able to convince the job fairy to visit everyone’s homes before the elections, there is no way she would become prime minister. It is better to wait it out four or even eight more years in order to capture the right moment. She is only 47.
N
ow that Rubalcaba is seen as the only candidate (the nominations are still open until June 13th, but no one else seems to have a chance), he has embarked on a damage control mission, patching up the cracks caused by the bitter loss in the last race and convincing Socialists at the grass roots level that there was no secret conclave of cardinals that anointed him the party’s favourite candidate. As for the May 15th Movement, the Socialists have before them an excellent opportunity to capture the momentum of the burgeoning protests by meeting with the platform’s leaders and incorporating some of their demands in their party manifesto next year. Whether this will occur remains to be seen. There are many in both parties who are distrustful of these “outraged ones” and believe bowing down to their calls is setting a dangerous precedent. But the movement is there and there is no chance it will fade away before the next general elections.
W
e know our choices for next year: Rubalcaba on behalf of the Socialists and Mariano Rajoy running for the Popular Party. So what do we have here? Two tired politicos from the old guard who promise to bring some fresh views to a crippled Spanish society, but who are only a continuation of the past inept and failed government policies of their two respective parties. Spain needs change – business needs to change the way the sector deals with employees and politicians need to change in the way they deal with their constituents. One of the keys for that change is to bring in fresh energy to Spain’s dinosaur parties. There is a whole generation of young leaders emerging from both organizations as well as in other parties who believe they can do it better. Unfortunately, the big fence standing in their way is firmly being guarded by an old generation of leaders who refuse to release their grip on power. Until that happens, Spain will continue on the same path of seeking quick get-rich schemes and missing long-term opportunities.

Is inheritance tax in Spain about to change? Inheritance tax is an important consideration for anyone who owns property in Spain or is thinking of purchasing. The autonomous regions are allowed to set their own inheritance tax levels and allowances. However these allowances only apply for the estates of people who have been resident in that region for five years and the beneficiaries are similarly resident. If both the deceased and beneficiaries do not satisfy the residency requirement then the national state rules apply. There is a vast difference between the state inheritance tax rules and the regional allowances. Several regions including Madrid, the Canary Islands, the Balearics, Valencia and Murcia have virtually no inheritance tax between spouses or between parents and children. Others, principally those with socialist administrations, have less generous allowances, nevertheless with professional advice the reductions can be utilised so as to significantly lower or eliminate the inheritance tax burden. For example Andalucia allows a gift to a
spouse, child or parent of up to €175,000 tax free. This is an all or nothing allowance not a nil rate band so a gift of €176,000 would be taxable on the full amount. As previously stated, these allowances only apply where the deceased and beneficiaries are residents. If not, the much less generous state rules apply which simply allow a deduction of just under €16,000 from the gift for tax purposes for spouse, children and parents of the deceased. This can mean that non resident beneficiaries pay many thousands of euros more tax than they would if they were residents. However help may be at hand for those thousands of non resident holiday home owners or residents of Spain whose principal or reserve beneficiaries (such as their children) are non residents. On February 16th this year, the European Commission asked Spain
to amend its tax provisions on inheritance and gift tax on the basis that they impose a higher tax burden on non-residents and on assets held abroad. The Commission was of the opinion that the provisions were incompatible with the free movement of workers and capital which are required under European law. In particular, the Commission considered that there was a breach of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (Articles 45 and 63 respectively). The request takes the form of a complementary "reasoned opinion". Spain has been given two months to respond and If there is no satisfactory response , the Commission may decide to refer the case to the EU's Court of Justice. However, this may take some time, the Commission previously sent a reasoned opinion to Spain on May 5th 2010 and although Spanish legislation has been amended slightly, it is still not fully compliant with
EU law. The Commission has therefore decided to send the latest complementary reasoned opinion requesting Spain to make additional changes to its legislation to ensure full compliance. The deadline has now passed but so far there is no news of any response. How Spain will respond, when this will be and how this will change the inheritance tax burden for non residents is not yet clear. The Spanish Government is in financial difficulties as it is and will be reluctant to give up this lucrative, if unjust, stream of revenue. However, Spain is now on notice and to delay the matter may lead to claims from beneficiaries who are adversely affected by Spain's failure to comply. This could lead to a similar situation to Capital Gains Tax which was also discriminatory and ultimately amended to be the same for non-residents and residents alike and also led to a deluge of claims for compensation from people
who had paid the higher rate of tax as non residents. If and when the inheritance laws are changed it would be well worth everyone with a property in Spain to consult their lawyer or accountant to see whether changes should be made to their wills to reduce or eliminate inheritance tax. Over the past two weeks, The News has been running articles about the region of Murcia and the fact that the new Paramount Studios has just announced they are to build their new theme park in the area to rival Disneyland Paris that will be within a 20 minute drive of the houses for sale here. The city of Murcia holds many interesting features as does Cartagena that is around 30 minutes drive away. Pógs juice it up for June Photos The International Festival Photographic Exhibition is an exhibition of photographs by local photographers from The Friends In Focus Camera Club. The exhibition will be held at the Mijas Tourist Office from Friday June 3rd until Saturday June 18th, with the inauguration on Tuesday June 7th from 6pm until 8pm.
Party, party, party at Pógs this weekend. The leading live music venue of Fuengirola hosts its “here comes the summer party” next Saturday June 4th. The music starts with Stereo 80, an AC/DC, Bon Jovi style live and loud (trust me) classic rock band, brimming with attitude, these boys enjoy a good following on the coast with their performances of real 80s rock. Claudio Panteleone, their lead singer, is pictured above. But party on brethren, Looney Toonz with the irrepressible Reverend
Toon leading the flock will take you through to the early hours of a summer Sunday morning with Ska, Reggae and Soul, non stop classic British hits from that iconic era, the result, a party for people who do like to party.
However if you just can not wait until Saturday night then feel free to start the party on Friday night, catch the welcome return to Pógs of that excellent Málaga band D'spetos, another fine rock band who deliver as promised.
The Pógs bar opens at 8.00 pm for your essential summer refreshment; cool cocktails, drinks specials and promotions and a generous “get the place rocking” 2 for 1 on drinks until 10 pm when the first band, Stereo 80 launch the big event.
Pógs is the big Irish style rock pub that's easy to find, just off the sea front in Calle Lamo de Espinosa near to the PYR Hotel in Fuengirola. For a preview, Pógs and the bands are available just for a click of your mouse on either myspace or facebook.

The photographs were taken at last year’s International Festival feature ‘A Coming together of Cultures’ organised by the Mijas Foreigners Department, in conjunction with the Tourist Office of Mijas. The exhibition will be open Monday to Friday from 9am until 8pm and Saturday from 9am until 2pm. Photographs can be purchased and all proceeds will go to the local charity A.DI.MI. e X-Men: First Class BY MATTHEW VAUGHN Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender
Here we have it – an origins movie that sheds light on the core cast, should please fans of the franchise, and is bound to win new fans as a stand-along terrific introduction for newcomers. It charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. The franchise has so far featured leading thesps Sir Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Professor X and Magneto respectively. But before they assumed these identities they were two young men harnessing their mutant powers for the first time as Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. It is a time before the two became the
sworn enemies familiar to fans of the StewartMcKellen films. In this they are close friends recruited by the CIA and working together with other mutants to stop the greatest threat the world has known. The movie is set in Cold War 1960s, with the Cuban Missile Crisis as backdrop and director Vaughn has created the paciness of the early James Bond movies. Mind reader
Xavier is recruited to hunt down warmonger Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and his henchwoman Emma Frost (Mad Men’s January Jones). He takes command of a group of young mutants, including Erik, and they struggle to protect the human race, while facing the fear and hatred of the very people they are trying to protect. Xavier believes that
humans and mutants can co-exist peacably, but Erik cannot share his friend’s belief, and a rift opens between them, beginning the war between the XMen and Magneto’s Brotherhood. It’s set to raise the bar high for the oncoming summer blockbusters and the producers have options on most of the cast to feature in a further two movies. A must-see.

When it was first published in 1782 it was considered so scandalous that when Queen Marie-Antoinette commissioned a copy for her personal library she had to have it bound in a blank cover so that no-one would recognise the author's name or title. he first movie version with the same title as the book was made in 1959 by Roger Vadim and updated the characters into Paris swingers, and is without a doubt, the worst version. The film starts with the director obnoxiously explaining the plot and the characters are continuously explaining themselves. This story is all about secrecy, style and good manners. The film replaces all the good stuff with characters that say out loud all the facts the viewer should be obliged to ponder on.
T
Last week it was revealed that Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow will be directing the film about the black ops that led to his killing – the movie was given the green light by Columbia Pictures, which has won the distribution rights.
about the Al Qaeda leader’s capture or killing before his death on May 2nd and studio bosses reckon that puts them in the driving seat.
Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal both won Oscars for the Iraq bomb squad movie The Hurt Locker and had been working on a project
Bigelow, the only woman director to win an Oscar, is expected to start filming later this year, with a pencilled in release for the last quarter of 2012.
The new posters for the last instalment of the Harry Potter franchise, unveiled last week, show the three main characters, Harry, Hermione and Ron, covered in blood and dirt, standing in front of burning buildings bearing the tagline “It All Ends”. In part two of The Deathly Hallows Harry faces his final battle with Lord
Voldemort in the eagerly awaited movie. The premiere on July 15th will be the first ever to get the red carpet treatment in London’s Trafalgar Square. Bosses at Warner Bros decided that the franchise and its stars have become so popular that the usual venue in Leicester Square is no longer big enough.
he most famous adaptation, I believe, is the 1988 version “Dangerous Liaisons” starring Glenn Close as the Marquise de Merteuil, and John Malkovich as Valmont. The production is well lit and shot, and the period locations and costumes are visually sumptuous and perfect. Better yet, the acting entirely matches the skill of the direction that takes its method from the theatre - emotions are conveyed by expression and not dialogue. Glenn Close gives her best performance on celluloid as the scheming Madame de Merteuil, amorally hellbent on bending everyone to her will, no matter the method or the cost, and John
Malkovitch is her perfect foil as the cynical, hedonistic but world-weary Valmont.
“
Valmont”, the 1989 version directed by Milos Foreman is my personal favourite as I preferred the charm of Colin Firth in this film to the brutality of Malkovich, and I thought Annette Benning was just delightful. She played Merteuil with exquisite timing and an ironic witchery and warmth that I shall not soon forget. I preferred her playful, sly wit to Close's cool cynicism. Colin Firth is a marvelous Valmont. Firth is a VERY subtle actor. Early in the film he pretends to be helpless in the water, unable to swim in order to elicit a response from his victim, (Tilly), but when his actions do not receive the response he expected, his face changes immediately. He is no longer the smiling, charmer, but a man furious that his plan was thwarted. These changes in expression happen in an instant. The alteration of his features is absolutely chilling. It is, to me, far more effective to have the villain of the piece LOOK like an angel, than to look like what he really is (Malkovitch). Annette Benning, with her delicate beauty and dimple certainly doesn't look like the scheming, sexual predator that she really is.
“
Cruel Intentions”, 1999, puts a very modern slant on the story, starring Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar as the Valmont and the Marquise counterparts and Reese Witherspoon as the victim. It is one of the rare teen movies that has a maturity about it, and the use of the Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony during the final comeuppance scene is a stroke of genius!

Being wildly productive and feeling good at the same time is what this week has in store for you. Relaxing is likely to be out of the question this week. Expect to be focused and determined as Mars your ruling planet is in harmony with Venus – just be careful that you are not too domineering towards those with less grit than yourself. If you have a job to do then this is the time to get it done and watch the rewards trickle in – there may even be a boost with your finances You are like a rocket about to take off and any frustration you feel is because there has been a whole host of delays. These hold ups then create tension and stress causing the normally placid bull to explode. Waiting on others is starting to try your patience. Just keep plodding Taurus and pushing against that door because very soon it will give way and your new venture will take off like dynamite. Rest assured that success is waiting in the wings. It is time once again for teamwork, there is more to be gained by joining forces and all pulling together in the pursuit of a single goal than trying to take on the world alone. For you this is easier said than done because finding those to motivate, whom you can trust to do the job as well as you, can be difficult. The main issue is you are a quick thinker and many cannot keep up with you, perhaps give them time to grasp the concepts, their genius may then surprise you. In the past certain events or words spoken could have made you react in a stressed manner, this week injects a certain objectivity into your daily reactions, so if you find yourself feeling more at ease with a certain situation, then don’t question it, just enjoy your inner calm. Your mind is far more alert so if you have any project that needs a push to complete then this is the week to undertake it. Clarity of thought combined with common sense allows you to function with your feet firmly on the ground. There is a great desire in you to improve your status, something inside is pushing you to perform, pressuring you to gain in the material and emotional realms. Just remember that life is not a competition and keeping up with the Jones’s does not always lead to inner fulfilment which is what you are really looking for. You want to be remembered for something significant and substantial and want to be loved unconditionally. Aim for the moon and I am sure you will reach the top of the tree – go for it Leo. Doors are flying open, opportunities; discoveries and excitement fill your week. Sometimes you just know when something is right – you feel it right down to your boots and then there is no need to question anything it just is. You have that feeling this week, something is going very well. There is a myriad of support around you and expect invitations to come flooding in. This is a great time for networking and self-promotion; just watch those acquaintances flock.

A wake up call, a lightning bolt, or a sudden realisation has occurred, something has stopped you in your tracks and you have radically changed your opinion. As you look back over your shoulder you may decide to ‘bury the hatchet’ with someone or re-visit a place to view the scenery from another angle. Passion is on the rise and a relationship is starting to smoulder, it can September 23rd be exciting but at the same time all consuming. Are you feeling all out at sea this week? Your nervous system has taken a toll lately due to an emotional upheaval that you hoped you would not have to deal with. Slowly, if your heart is in the right place and you keep up that determined focus of where you want to be, you will climb your way out of this emotional ditch. You are on a high learning curve at the moment with everyday having its impact on the way you view the world. Treat yourself with kindness and make sure you leave time for pampering. Be as direct as you can bear Pisces - this week is all about standing up for the underdog, speaking your mind and letting others know their place. Side stepping issues or tip toeing around things to keep the peace is going to do no-one any good at the moment. So cut right to the chase and ask for what you want and do not leave any room for misinterpretation. Even though you are a sensitive soul you are incredibly strong and have the ability to swim upstream without it leaving any trace.

MEMORABILIA AUCTION
Dieters hit bottle in bid to shed pounds
Tinseltown spectacular under the hammer Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe appeared in one of the most memorable movie moments of all time, wearing one of the most memorable costumes of all time. Now someone with a cool $2 million stands the chance of owning the famous white halterneck dress which blew up around the actress’s legs when she stepped onto a subway grate in The Seven Year Itch The dress is one of a huge number of famous film costumes put up for sale by actress Debbie Reynolds,
who starred with Gene Kelly in Singin’ In The Rain. Going under the hammer will be Judy Garland’s costume from the Wizard Of Oz, Audrey Hepburn’s Ascot dress from My Fair Lady and costumes worn by Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music. Reynolds,79, also famous for being the mother of Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher,
has been collecting memorabilia for more than 50 years and she is selling her entire collection of 3,500 items in the Beverley Hills auction on June 18th. She has collected the bowler hat worn by Charlie Chaplin as The Tramp and Barbra Streisand’s sleeveless gold jewelled gown from Hello, Dolly – said to be the
most expensive dress made for a movie. But the star lot is going to be the Marilyn subway dress – no longer quite as white as when she wore it but still set to stir the senses just like it did back in the 50s. The Reynolds collection was expected to be displayed in a museum but the project fell through, so she decided to sell it instead.
Online fashion in power surge The online fashion retailer Asos will tomorrow (Thursday) leave high street rivals trailing in its wake when it posts a 41 per cent rise in profits for the year ended March 31st. The company has managed to fly in the face of the consumer crisis while some of its rivals on the streets, such as New Look, have struggled. Asos is benefiting from the boom in online purchasing, and a lot of the success is down to soaring foreign sales. Asos is one of the leaders in turning out affordable lookalike
fashion, which means that shoppers can pick up outfits worn by celebrities for a fraction of the price. Asos has had sell-out successes in the past with copies of frocks worn by the then Kate Middleton – now recognised as a style icon on both sides of the Atlantic who stays true to her high street roots. And
when the Duchess of Cambridge met Michelle Obama last week wearing a Reiss Shola Bandage dress costing just £175 it was snapped up in moments from Reiss stores and the demand on the company’s website was so great that the site crashed. At the peak of demand the dresses were being sold at one per minute in the UK
and the US. Now dozens of the dresses have flooded eBay but they will cost a cool £600 plus. One is advertised with the tagline “Get yourself a piece of royal heritage from England” – pretty rich considering the dress has been nowhere near Buckingham Palace, Anglesey or the Duchess’s back.

The diet was dreamed up by personal trainer Tracy Anderson, who is credited with creating the figures of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. Apparently Jennifer Aniston eats up to 14 pots a day and has a main meal of fish and steamed vegetables. Nutritionists reckon the diet won’t do any harm but say that healthy eating and an exercise regime is still the best way to slim – cut your portions and reach for an apple or a carrot, rather than a jar.

There are plenty of women who want to shed a bit of weight as summer looms – and it looks like a lot of them are following the latest Hollywood fad favoured by stars. As a result wet baby food sales in the UK over the last two weeks are up 20 per cent compared with the same period last year, while the figure for dry baby food has jumped 59 per cent, according to online web grocer Ocado. The baby food diet is credited with helpìng some of the world’s most glamorous women lose weight – stars like Lady GaGa, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and the UK’s Cheryl Cole are said to have used it. Cheryl was dumped from American X Factor last week amid rumours that TV executives wanted her to lose two stone. One out of every seven new mothers has post-natal depression, recent figures have shown, and men and women who have preexisting mental health problems are more at risk of developing depression after the birth of a child. The peak time for fathers' depression is thought to be between
three and six months after the birth but it can begin during pregnancy, when relationships are already changing. Fathers can feel left out while their partner is the focus of increased attention. A spokeswoman for the Association for Postnatal Illness suggested fatherhood is not recognised as a lifechanging event, the way motherhood is. She said that when the the pregnancy is confirmed, the GP should invite the mother and father to come in “"That way they can pick up if he has any issues.” It is
said that men with depression get mad, while women get sad. Drinking too much, self-medicating and having affairs can all be signs of fathers with depression, according to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Parenting charity the National Childbirth Trust has produced a leaflet for fathers, called Becoming a Parent, advising them not bottle it up: “Speak to your partner and your family and friends. In Coin approximately 25% of the population (6000 people) are foreign nationals. Approximately 4000 of them have registered on the Empadron.
If expats were not allowed to vote in the local elections, there would be cries of "discrimination", yet when they have the chance they don't bother.
Only around 470 have bothered to register to vote and less than 100 voted in the recent election.
It's time that expats (and I don't mean only the British) woke up and realised that they have to stand up and be counted if they want things to change, if they want the local council to recognise that they are here and do things for them.
How can expats expect the local council to do anything for them when the majority are so apathetic?
Name supplied I went along and voted in the recent elections but my partner didn’t. The reason for this? Despite filling in all the correct forms and getting them in on time we found that the local ayuntamiento had only registered one of us. I have heard of a lot of other foreigners that this has happened to - and not only the English. We have been here for years,
Barbara Vineca I thought it was never going to happen! This weekend I managed to get into my cozzie and get in my pool for a swim on Saturday. The weather has been
Editor says: I agree but the parties do not make enough of an effort to get our votes. Only one party even bothered to get in touch with The News. I did go and vote but the atmosphere at the polling station (by the way, why were there no maps up anywhere to tell you where the polling stations were?) was so obviously unfriendly to foreigners that I bet a few just turned around and walked out! If the parties want our votes, more effort is needed!
by email we work, we pay our Social Security, we are registered on the empadron of the town where we live and still it would seem that they want our money but don’t want us to have our rights. There was one party in particular who said that they would help the foreigners but, unfortunately they didn’t get any seats. Probably because half the people that probably
would have voted for them found out too late that they weren’t on the register. There are a lot of angry people in this town but the local government has at least changed. We now have to wait and see if it’s for the better for the next four years. If not, I for one will be making damned sure that all of my friends are definitely on the list next time!
San Pedro positively “English” for so long I had come to believe that this year the Costa del Sol was going to be the Costa de Lluvia y Nieblas! Still, away go all the jumpers anf
winter trousers and coats and out comes all the pretty summer gear. It’ll probably rain tomorrow now and it’ll be all my fault for opening my big mouth!
Siboney’s Siboney’s in the la Trocha commercial centre in coin is about to re-open with a dynamic new owner who will make sure that your first visit is not your last! Open not just for coffees, and drinks, they will be having a barbecue too! Pop in and relax after shopping or a hard day’s work, and enjoy a lovely dinner.

Stargazing By Ken Campbell

Binary stars When you look at the stars on a clear dark night they all appear to be single tiny points of light, but with closer inspection through telescopes it has been discovered that at least 1/3rd of all the stars are not one single star but in fact made up of two or more stars linked together by gravity.
I
nstead of a planet orbiting around the star it is another star that circles the main or primary star; these stars are called binary star systems. Some stars that appear to be binary systems having a companion star nearby are usually just a line of sight effect and in most cases the other star is many millions of miles in front of or behind the main star, the ones we are interested in are the true binary stars.
O
ur Sun is not a binary star, the next closest star to us, Alpha Centauri, is over 4 ½ light years away but Alpha Centauri is not only a binary star system it is a collection of three stars all orbiting around each other. Can you imagine what it must look like if you lived on a planet orbiting one of these stars? There would be three suns in your sky! Do you remember the scene from the original ‘Star Wars’ movie when Luke Skywalker went out into the desert on his home planet Tatooine looking for R2D2 and there were two suns setting behind him? That’s what living in a binary system must look like.
W
ith many of the binary systems, the companion star is either so close or so much fainter than the primary star that it is very difficult to see without a telescope but there are one or two that can be seen with the naked eye, the one I like to use to test peoples’ eyesight is called Mizar. If you want to try it yourself then go outside on a very dark clear night preferably when the Moon is out of the way and locate the constellation of The Plough, this is the one that looks like a saucepan with four stars making up the bowl of the saucepan and three stars making the curved handle. Look very carefully at the middle star in the curved handle and if you have very good eyesight you will be able to make out the companion star Alcor very close by, most people can spot it.
M
izar and Alcor are 83 light years from Earth but only just over 1 light year apart and are connected by gravity to each other and orbiting. If you look at Mizar with binoculars you will see that there is a third star close by that is also part of the group and now with bigger telescopes in 2009 a fourth, fifth and sixth star has been discovered that is also in there!
B
ut for me the most spectacular binary star is definitely Albireo, the star that marks the head of Cygnus the swan. Albireo is distinguished by the dramatic colour difference between the two stars and whenever I show it to people through a telescope they are always surprised at how different the two stars appear, one star is bright yellow while the other smaller star is a deep blue in colour.
B
ecause of the alignment between some binary stars as seen from Earth then as they orbit each other one star will eclipse or pass in front of the other causing the overall brightness to dip dramatically. One of the most extreme examples of an eclipsing binary star is Algol in the constellation Perseus, Algol is eclipsed by its companion star every 3 days causing its brightness to dip by over 1 ½ times, this winking effect inspired the ancient Greeks to christen it ‘The Demon Star’.

The Swans hit the big time at last Scott Sinclair hit a hat-trick as Swansea became the first Welsh side to reach the Premier League after holding off a brave Reading fightback in a pulsating Championship play-off final at Wembley. Sinclair struck twice in as many minutes midway through the half, first from the penalty spot and then with a close-range finish, Stephen Dobbie hammered in the 3rd. Reading hit back at the restart with 2 goals, but another penalty give away sealed their fate.
Vettel - one stop wonder Benalmadena Vettel, who started from pole, eventually finished just 1.1 seconds up on Fernando Alonso, with Jenson Button, who briefly led, right behind in third. It was Vettel’s fifth win from the six races run so far, and further increased his lead in the driver standings. But Red Bull appeared to have thrown away the chance of victory when the team made an uncharacteristically poor tyre change on lap 16. The slip-up, in which there was a significant delay before Vettel could rejoin, was enough to allow McLaren's Jenson Button to take over at the front of the field. Button, running on a second set of Pirelli's new supersoft tyres, was quickly able to extend his advantage over second place, to the extent that he almost had a full pit-stop in hand over the world champion, but the
he should be back in the paddock within a few hours.” In the end, following the re-start on lap 73, Mark Webber came through and grabbed fourth from Kamui Kobayashi on the final lap, while Hamilton took the flag in sixth ahead of Adrian Sutil, Nick Heidfeld and Rubens Barrichello. The final point went to Sebastien Buemi. The battle between the top 3 was intense right to the end
arrival of the safety car on lap 34 - just after Button had made his second stop destroyed his gains, and handed the lead back to Vettel. With Button needing to use the harder tyres, a third stop also allowed Fernando Alonso into second, but the top three closed up as their respective strategies set the race up for an intriguing finish. The race though was full of drama,
with the safety car deployed on lap 34 after Felipe Massa crashed in the tunnel, shortly after being passed by Lewis Hamilton, and it was also red flagged near the end when there was a multiple collision involving Adrian Sutil, Hamilton, Jaime Alguersuari and Vitaly Petrov. The Russian was taken to hospital, but was not injured. A statement put out by Lotus Renault GP read: “After his crash during the Monaco GP this afternoon, Vitaly complained about his left ankle to the medical crew, so doctors drove him to the Princess Grace hospital for further checks. No fracture had been diagnosed at the circuit. “Once at hospital, it was confirmed that there was no swelling or broken bone. As a precaution, Vitaly will undergo a full body scan but
Spain’s Contador wins the Giro Spain's Alberto Contador has won the Giro d'Italia for the second time, finishing six minutes and 10 seconds ahead of Italy's Michele Scarponi. Britain's David Millar won the final stage in Milan for his Garmin team, ahead of Dane Alex Rasmussen (HTC-Highroad) and Contador in third place. The Spaniard, cycling for the Saxo Bank team, was the pre-race favourite. Contador first took the Giro's pink jersey in 2008. In this year's race he captured two stage wins and held the leader's jersey for 13 days on his way
to a victory which owed much to his excellent performance in the mountains. Contador celebrated Sunday's win by
beating his chest as he crossed the line, firing the traditional pistol shot in the air with his finger.
Lewis Hamilton was given another penalty after he was judged to have caused an avoidable collision when he hit Pastor Maldonado in the closing stages. The second drivethrough penalty was applied after the race and as such it meant 20 seconds was added to his time. However, he remained sixth in the classification, as his next closest rival was a lap down. Speaking after the race and before news of his latest clash with the stewards, Hamilton described the penalties he has received this year as “a shambles” and “an absolute joke” and quipped that he is seemingly being singled out for persistent victimisation by stewards “maybe ‘cos I'm black.” He later apologised and said he was using the Ali G reference as a joke.

Bowls news What a fantastic April/May we have had at Benalmadena Bowls Club. We have had the 1st Win Trophy, Handicap singles, Easter bonnet parade,
Ladies morning, Mayday madness, Crown green bowling and North v South (North Winners). We have also had visitors from England on holiday joining in the fun.
We at Benalmadena try to incorporate different games to make it more varied for different peoples’ taste. On the Sunday events the players bring a plate of food and after the games we all enjoy a chat and a drink and
catch up on any news that we might have. As always we end up with too much food but we always have a lovely time. We are now organising a night out at the Sunset Beach Club in Benalmadena for early July. We now have a website

A season of change for Malaga What a year of ups and downs for me and the thousands of Malaga supporters After renewing my season ticket in early June we all received the good news that Malaga had a new owner - a member of the Qatar Royal Family. Al Thani had bought Malaga, we were to have money for new players and a new manager. A wave of optimism swept over all Malaga supporters. Week one of the season saw a new team of players, two costing over €3 million, Rondon from Las Palmas and Seba from Uraguay. Albert Ferreira was the new manager and the Portugese had a great European pedigree. Twenty three thousand season tickets sold and a 3-1 home defeat to Valencia. Oh well, they would have to settle in and after the second game, a 5-3 away win at Zaragoza, things were looking up. A home defeat by arch rivals Sevilla was followed by an away win at Getafe. Defeats at home to Villareal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and indifferent away form resulted in Albert Ferreira getting the sack. Zonal marking and bad tactics were just not for Malaga. Rafa Gill took over as caretaker manager for an away trip to Espanyol but could not inspire an improvement, a 1-0 defeat. With Chilean ex Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini
installed things began to change. Young kids like Juanmi, Portillo and Recio were given a chance. Results improved, a win at home to Levante and Racing but away trips were a disaster with 3 defeats. Another home defeat by Atletico Madrid was really the first time the supporters turned against the team with shouts of 'merceneries' at the
and defeat at Barca saw little improvement. Then, for me, the turning point, a 4-3 away defeat at Valencia! With the team down to 9 players Malaga played how we knew they could play and very nearly ground out a result, with the Spanish press dubbing the match the game of the year. We were bottom and deservedly so and another home defeat
The Malaga team that went on to beat Español 2-0
players. By Christmas things were bad, in the bottom three, and a team with low moral. There was always the January transfer window. Loan players from Atletico Madrid, a new goalkeeper in Asenjo, Carmacho, Demechellis from Bayern Munich, Maresca, ex Sevilla god, and of course Julio Baptista (the beast) all came in : 'We were saved!' A home draw with Bilbao
against relegation rivals Zaragoza looked to be terminal, especially with the long term injury to Malaga's on loan keeper Asenjo. Away at Sevilla, Pellegrini set a team to gain a point and did so, not pretty, but no goals conceded. Arnau deputised in goal until the signing of Elche's Willy Caballero and what a signing he was. Another turning point in Malaga's season. In another twist Baptista got
injured and expected to be out for 6 weeks. Three more games and 5 points later saw the visit to Real Madrid. A 71 hammering with a weak team only to follow up against Osasuna with a home defeat. A low point of the season that had people questioning Pellegrini. From then on things changed in dramatic fashion, the team had taken a while to adjust and were now coming to terms with the situation. Wins were needed and they soon came. Baptista came back from injury and with him and Rondon forming a formidable partnership up front, Malaga proceeded to pick up 26 points from the last 11 games to secure La Liga status and send everyone into the summer with a smile on their faces. Turning points in the season are obvious, Pellegrini's appointment, Baptista's inspirational return from injury, Rondon's goals and for me the signing of Willy Caballero in goal. Next season should be brilliant with more money to spend on players and the impetus to push the club on, who knows you may see Malaga qualifying for Europe next season!! Malaga’s season report by Scott Forbes
Down but not disheartened There comes a time in the emergence of a new cricket club when it must test its capability against an established side. Fuengirola CC v The New Local Side! So it was that the new local side and Fuengirola CC met at the New Cartama Oval last Sunday for a 35 overs per side match, playing league rules in a friendly match. The new local side won the toss and elected to bat. Fuengirola chose to hold back regular opening pace bowler Ali, preferring to bowl Amir down the slight slope and Sidhu into the breeze at the other end. The highly experienced if rusty opening pair of Phil Flaxman and Tony Crooks saw these two off with little trouble, although scoring slowly to reach 19 without loss off 6 overs. Amir gave way to Ali and oddly enough his greater pace and threat suited the batsmen better and they took him for 6, 5 and 11 off his three over spell. Sidhu gave way to Tanveer who was less to the batsmen’s liking, dismissing
bowled by Amir. Resistance after this was minimal and the innings ended with three overs left for 117, at least 50 short of a competitive total.
Tony Crooks for a patient 13 in the 10th over. Twelve overs in and the new local side were 46 for 1 and looking, if not wonderful, certainly not too bad for newcomers on their first competitive outing. Ali then gave way to Shahid, recently returned from a spell working away in Madrid and the wheels started to come off: 13 overs, 53 for 2; 15 overs, 61 for 3; 17 overs, 67 for 5. The 6th wicket partnership brought a bit of stability, putting on 40 - with the score barely topping 100 and just 7 overs left, Peter Winter had little choice but to try to throw the bat and paid the price,
Fuengirola sent in two big hitters to open their innings, in the shape of Afzal and Adnan, and they signalled their intent off the first over, hitting Rayeez for 10. The bowling did not look incisive and the Fuengirola openers were able score freely, reaching 50 off just 7 overs. Next over Adnan sweetly timed a ball off his legs only to see it go straight to Peter Winter at square leg who comfortably took the catch to give Tom Tobin his only wicket. Assad came to the wicket intent on keeping up the run rate and pushed the score on to 92 off just 13 overs before being bowled by Nick Helme while trying to smite what would have been his fifth consecutive
boundary. Two overs later it was all over with Afzal carrying his bat for 35. The final scores: New Cricket Team 117 all out. Fuengirola, 120 for 2, won by 8 wickets Defeat for the local side was perhaps not unexpected, but the scale of it was disappointing for them. They took it well, though, resolving over a welcome post match drink to press on and improve for the next one. Luke Donald new World Nº1 Cool hand Luke does it again as he wins PGA to be the new World Nº 1 golfer Luke Donald replaced Lee Westwood as world number one after beating the latter in a titanic final-day shootout that went to a playoff in the BMW, PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday. After the pair had finished 72 holes tied on 278, six under par, Donald produced a birdie four at the first extra hole to pick up the first prize of €750,000. At the first replaying of the 18th hole Donald, who started the week ranked second in the world, struck a stunning wedge and the ball spun back to finish eight feet from the hole to loud cries from the West Course crowd of 'Luke, Luke, Luke', which always sounds like a chorus of ‘boos’. under 70 on another tough day for scoring at the European Tour's flagship event. Westwood, who was playing in the match ahead, notched five birdies in a 68 and had the chance to win the coveted trophy at the 72nd hole but he missed the six foot putt. Britain's Simon Dyson (69) took third place on 280 and Australian Marcus Fraser, Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin and Ireland's Shane Lowry shared fourth spot on 282. On climbing one spot to the top of the rankings, England's Donald said: "Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?" The Americanbased golfer added: "It's something I'll be very proud of. Obviously, there's a lot of work still to do and hopefully there'll be much more to come, but I'll savour this. Three-time PGA champion and eight-time European number one Colin Montgomerie carded 68 to end in the group sharing seventh at one under for his best finish since a tie for second in the 2008 French Open.

Paul Scholes calls it a day Manchester United's Paul Scholes has announced his retirement aged 36. Midfielder Scholes made his United debut in 1994, making 676 appearances, and will now join the coaching staff. The news came after he helped the club win a record 19th league title, the 10th of his career, and his last game was Saturday's Champions League final loss to Barcelona. "This was not a decision I've taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing," he said.
