Sr Zapatero announced only two new measures – greater protection for people who cannot keep up their mortgage payments and a ceiling on regional government spending. He spent the rest of his one hour 15 minute speech defending his economic reforms and called on all parties to support them “whoever may govern”.

On Saturday I went to see our Sue who is at home recovering from her recent hospital forays. She is, of course, exhausted by it all and the bruising she has been enduring is a phenomenal array of colours. From dark purple, through apple green to banana yellow, she has them all! We sat and gossipped for a few hours about what has been happening in the outside world and, at least she hasn’t lost her sense of humour. We are hoping to see her gradually coming back to work in the near future, depending on what the doctor says on Thursday, of course. She says she’s bored sick but her husband, Mick, has been an absolute star throughout it all so, well done Michael, you’ve done her proud! On Monday night we had to do the airport run to pick up some friends that were coming in quite late so we were trying to think of something to do to use up the time between leaving work and picking them up. We had a look at what was on at the cinemas in its original version. Quite fancied Pirates of the Carribean but that started in Fuengirola at four o’clock in the afternoon. Kung Fu Panda 2 might have been amusing - yep, big kid at heart - but as we hadn’t seen the original version there would have been “in” jokes that we just wouldn’t have got. Then there was something that I couldn’t even understand the title of so that was hopeless. In the end we went to dinner at Las Islas on Torreblanca - great - and I’ll tell you all about it next week.

Prince presides at soldiers' funeral

Crown Prince Felipe presided over the oﬃcial funeral ceremony on Tuesday of the two soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan last week when a bomb exploded under their armoured car 20 kilometres north of Qala-i-Naw near the border with Turkmenistan. The bodies of Sgt Manuel Argudin Perrino and Pte Niyireth Pineda Marín were flown to the General Aleman Ramirez army base in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on Monday, where the funeral ceremony took place. At the end of the ceremony, Prince Felipe pinned the Cross of Military Merit to the flags

covering their coffins. Among those present were minister Chacoin, Canary Island regional premier Paulino Rivero and members of his government, military top brass and local officials. The remains of Sgt Perrino will be taken to Valencia for burial, while Pte Pineda will be buried in her native Colombia.

Troops limit movements to avoid attacks

When the PM sat down, opposition leader Mariano said there had been nothing surprising in the PM's speech. Later that afternoon, Sr Rajoy criticised Sr Zapatero on all fronts, and asked why he insisted on prolonging “this calamity”. He said the PM was hiding behind “excuses, frills, promises and false hopes” in order to avoid facing up to the crisis. He said the state-of-thenation debate was not about whether Spain was well or ill “because it is so evidently ill”. The majority of the parties represented in Parliament agreed on one thing – the PM's speech had been disappointing. Convergencia y Union leader Josep Antoni Duran said the PM's speech sounded “like the parting of a person who feels remorse about the situation”. Basque Nationalist Party spokesman Josu Erkoreka said the PM was right to concentrate on the economic crisis, “which is what everyone is worried about”, but found him too optimistic, grasping at the slightest sign of economic recovery. Turbulent first week of Basque coalition By the end of its first week in power, the Basque left-wing coalition, Bildu, which swept the board in several parts of the Basque Country and Navarre in the May 22nd municipal elections, had removed the King's official portrait from the council meeting room in San Sebastian and proposed a reduction of the police and military presence throughout the Basque Country to reduce spending and because “the majority of Basques do not identify with them”. By law, the King's portrait must be hung in all government buildings and

only the Basque regional government in Madrid can order a reduction of the forces of law and order. The mayor of Andoain had already refused to allow councillors' bodyguards to enter the town hall. Many councillors belonging to the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular have been assigned bodyguards for years now as they are considered prime targets for the Basque terrorist group ETA. Last Friday, the mayor of Zarautz, Guipuzcoa province, confronted members of the Ertzaintza (Basque police force) when

they entered the town hall's reception hall to remove a poster featuring ETA prisoners and photos of known members of ETA. The mayor demanded to know why they were doing so – it is in fact against the law – then tried to stop the

Ertzaintza from entering the room. As they forced their way in, they were insulted and jostled but no arrests were made. By the end of last week, Deputy PM and Interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba had warned several times that

the government would not hesitate to enforce the laws in the Basque Country. He also said that Bildu was losing credibility with every passing day that it did not condemn ETA’s violence and call on the group to disband.

Protesters start marches on Madrid Hundreds of activists from cities across Spain began to march towards Madrid on Monday as part of a demonstration against the state of the economy. The protest marchers started oﬀ in Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia and Cadiz and will converge in the capital next month. Similar marches are due to start from other cities in coming days. Two years of recession have left the country with an unemployment rate of 21 per cent, rising to 35 per cent among those under the age of 30, and protests against the government's austerity measures and a lack of jobs have been increasing in recent weeks.

Pope's programme announced The Vatican has released the programme of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Madrid, from August 18th to 21st, to attend the 26th World Youth Day events, which begin on August 16th. It will be his third visit to Spain. His three-day visit will be spent mostly in the company of young people at a series of events in

Madrid plus a visit to the El Escorial, Philip II's sombre palace 50 km away from the capital, to meet more young people. The Pope will be received by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia on the 19th but there are no official meetings scheduled with members of the government or opposition politicians.

The country's leading supermarket chain, Mercadona, has asked its check-out girls to wear make-up in addition to their uniform. From now on, a touch of lipstick, eye shadow and blusher will not be frowned upon, as long as it is not “too excessive”, a spokesman said. And it's not a case of discrimination – male employees have also been asked to smarten up. The news might provoke criticism from feminists but Mercadona has excellent company-staff relations. After a trial period, workers are given indefinite contracts and get six months maternity leave. It is also one of the few supermarkets that always closes on Sundays and public holidays, the only exceptions being at Christmas and New Year. And despite the recession, all Mercadona staff received a three per cent wage rise last year. Absenteeism is well below the national average and productivity rose five per cent last year – all signs of a contented staff.

Young German entrepreneur Felix Finkbeiner raised a laugh last week in Girona at the end of a meeting of the Forum Impulsa, a group which focuses on creating new companies, sponsored by one of Crown Prince Felipe's foundations. Police arrested a 27-year-old woman who had been oﬀering to sell her one-month-old baby daughter for a “small amount of money” to passers-by last Friday. They received several calls from people in the central area of the city but when they arrived the woman had moved on. Anti-pollution measures studied Given the high pollution level in most of the country's large cities, the Environment ministry is studying the possibility of limiting access to city centres by car. One solution on the table is to introduce poll charges for the most polluting vehicles. Another is to impose an 80 kph speed limit in the suburbs of the most polluted cities. Both Madrid and Barcelona city councils have been studying ways to reduce their high pollution levels in line with an EU air quality directive. MADRID

Libya and elsewhere in the Arab world. Spain is heavily dependent on imported fuel and 13% of its oil usually comes from Libya. Deputy Prime Minister

Chinese criminal gang busted The Guardia Civil have arrested 34 people and seized goods worth more than €11 million in one of the biggest operations against Chinese organized crime in the country since the late 1990s. An interior ministry spokesman said the gang was making millions of euros from contraband tobacco and clothing, among other illegal activities, in Europe and sending the money to “capos” in China. Libya has rejected a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for the arrest of Col Muammar Gaddafi, saying the tribunal had no authority because it was "a tool of the Western world to prosecute leaders in the third world". The International Criminal Court(ICC) issued an arrest warrant on Monday for Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, accusing him of crimes against humanity. The Hague-based court also issued warrants for two of Col Gaddafi's top aides - his son Saif al-Islam and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanussi. In a statement, the court said there were

Man convicted of treason A Moscow court has found former senior intelligence oﬃcer Alexander Poteyev guilty of betraying the names of ten Russian sleeper agents and sentenced him in absentia to 25 years in jail. The 10 sleeper agents were expelled by the US last July and exchanged for four Russians who allegedly spied for the West, in the biggest spy swap since the Cold War. On their return, the Russian sleepers were met by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, and given Russia's top honours by President Dmitry Medvedev.

Clash over new high- FACTORY Offer speed rail tunnel Police clashed with demonstrators in the Italian Alps on Monday This week only! over the construction of a new high-speed rail link with France. Tunnelling is set to start for a line from Turin to Lyon, which will cut the travel time by nearly half. Local residents built barricades to prevent heavy machinery from starting work in the picturesque Val di Susa, in northern Italy. They fear that, despite safeguards built into the multi-billion euro project in a deal signed in 2001, an

area of outstanding natural beauty is going to be spoilt. Demonstrators sat on fire barricades erected to keep out intruders, but failed to halt the works. Police used fire hoses and tear gas to disperse them. They had to escort the contractor's bulldozers to the high Alpine site where work is due to begin.

Despite environmental objections, the Italian government is determined to go ahead with the project, which is heavily backed by EU money and is estimated to cost €15bn. If the work does not start by June 30th, the country risks losing the hundreds of million euros the EU is contributing.

Emperor penguin back on its feet The young emperor penguin found washed up on a New Zealand beach is eating fish again after having endoscopic surgery to remove sand from its stomach. The penguin was found last Monday by a dogwalker on Peka Peka beach, about 37 miles north of Wellington, after swimming off course some 3,000km from its home in Antarctica. The bird's

plight has attracted worldwide attention, and hundreds of people gathered on Monday to watch a leading gastroenterologist from Wellington Hospital perform an endoscopy on the bird at Wellington zoo. The penguin's swollen stomach and intestines were flushed to remove some of the sand and small pieces of driftwood it ate after coming ashore on

the North Island. It apparently mistook them for snow, which penguins eat for hydration and to keep cool. A businessman has offered to ship the penguin dubbed Happy Feet - back to Antarctica in February, when he will lead an expedition there, but zoo officials have said it may be moved back before then.

UK News Dead would-be burglar already on bail after previous arrest in same month The 27-year-old would-be burglar stabbed to death by the owner of the home he had attempted to break into last Wednesday around midnight, was on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of another burglary earlier this month in Tamworth, Staffordshire. John Leonard Benell, who was from Hyde, Greater Manchester, died from a stab wound to the chest after home owner Peter Flanagan, 59, caught four men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas trying to smash their way through the back door of his house in Ethel Avenue, Salford . Also arrested at the time was Mr Flanagan's son, Neil, aged 27, with whom he shared the house, and a 21-year-old woman. Both had been released without charge on Friday. Peter and Neil Flanagan ran a construction company in Manchester together until it was disolved in 2007. The woman made a frantic 999 call as Benell's accomplices carried him away as they tried to flee

the scene and a second call alerted police to an area nearby where they found the victim who was then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are appealing to the public to try and find his three accomplices. Mr Flanagan’s wife Valerie, who was not at the property at the time, said: “It’s such a terrible incident. How anything like this can happen to anyone I don’t know. My husband is a great man and a great father – it’s such a shock.” Neighbours and friends expressed their disbelief at what had happened, describing the Flanagans as a normal hard-working family. The incident comes after David Cameron promised stronger support for people protecting their property from burglars. “We will put beyond doubt that homeowners and small shopkeepers who use reasonable force to defend themselves or their properties will not be prosecuted,” the prime minister said.

Dogs die in car Two police dogs, a working Belgian Malinois and a German Shepherd puppy died in their handler’s car when they were left there in sweltering heat last Sunday. Both dogs had already passed out by the time they were rushed to an emergency veterinary service subsequently died. Protesters prevent eviction About 100 people belonging to the Mortgage Victims-Stop Evictions platform, which sympathises with the Real Democracy Now movement, prevented an unemployed woman from being evicted from her home in the Añoreta urbanisation in Rincon de la Victoria last Friday. The protesters began to arrive at 9am, an hour before the judicial committee was expected to arrive to reclaim the woman's

apartment for the bank. However, when the committee arrived at 10.30am, escorted by agents of the Local Police and the Guardia Civil, they were informed that the eviction had been postponed and the woman was being given more time to pay off her €130,000 mortgage. From Friday July 1st the emergency speed limit will be dropped, and drivers will be able to travel at 120 kph per hour on the major roads. Malaga Traﬃc Authority issued figures last week showing that speed traps on the province's highways and dual carriageways catch an average of 228 drivers a day. More than half of last year’s traﬃc fines – 83,131 – were for speeding. Road deaths had dropped 15 per cent since the lower 110 kph came into force three months ago.

Meet Keeping focused Pillaging and plundering for the RBL! Survivor T.O.P.S. (The Occasional Performance Society) recently held not one, but two, fundraising evenings for the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion poppy appeal. The original intention of just one evening had to be quickly extended to two, as tickets were sold out in just under two weeks! Over two hundred and fifty people attended the event which was held at a private house in Las Lomas, Alhaurin el Grande. The theme on both nights was centred on “pirates and the South Pacific” and the performers wowed the audience with their costumes and singing. Many of the guests entered into the spirit of the evening and turned up dressed as pirates, sailors, and island girls. The show started with some rousing 60s songs

from the excellent Andy Ross Singers, then with the audience suitably warmed up, was followed by the T.O.P.S. “pirates” with a couple of challenging Gilbert & Sullivan numbers included. The final part of the show featured the great songs from “South Pacific”, complete with sailors and island girls. The audience was treated to a mouthwatering hog roast during the interval and although

everyone was thoroughly into the “pirate” theme at this time, they were allowed to use knives and forks! There were some innovative pirate-themed games with appropriate prizes including rum, a framed and signed photograph of Johnny Depp from “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and a deck chair. A memorable and fun-filled couple of nights for a very worthy cause.

The Friends in Focus camera club members and their guests visited and took photos of the picturesque sunflowers fields and after a good lunch went to Fuente de Piedra and photographed the magnificent flamingos.

Youngsters at the Andalusian Horse Rescue Charity (ARCH) garden party on Sunday met the latest arrival, Survivor, a severely undernourished grey mare rescued from a gypsy in Fuengirola. The party, hosted by Sue and Alan Barns at their Rio Grande finca, attracted around 80 guests and raised sufficient funds to pay for 250 bales of hay which will feed the horses and donkeys for six months.

Further day trips are planned for the rest of this year and on October 19th the club is going on a coach trip staying in a 3 star hotel in Trujillo for four nights and exploring the interesting province of

News Open day another Weekend assaults great success jump in number Opposition leader Fabian Picardo and his friend were assaulted last weekend, suffering minor injuries, whilst walking through a car park in Marina Bay. A number of assaults took place in the busy areas of Ocean Village, Casemates and Market Place, two of the victims being policemen who were carrying out their duties. Six people have been arrested, including one man who is accused of the assault on Mr Picardo. All the 11 incidents that took The Convent hosted a very successful Garden Open Day last Saturday. The day was attended by over 1000 people who were able to wander around the gardens enjoying glorious weather. This annual event takes place to raise funds for two of the charities dearest to the hearts of the people of Gibraltar and it was good to see so many people taking part this year. The Convent Orange marmalade sold out completely and will now be out of stock until next year.

Daylight Seruya in robbery debate A total of seven homes fitted with ordinary Yale type locks instead of the more sturdy Spanish style bolt type locks in the Laguna and Glacis Estate areas have been targeted by burglars operating during daylight hours over the last eleven days. The apartments have had their locks and doorframes damaged in the attacks on the properties but the wouldbe burglars failed to get access to a further three. The thieves are going after jewellery and money, leaving laptops and other easily traceable items alone and seem to be attacking properties while people are out at work between 9am and 3pm. The police have asked neighbours to be extra vigilent and report anything suspicious to them where they have said they will act upon any information promptly.

In talks about La Linea and the high unemployment figures, well known Gibraltarian business man Solomon Seruya said that more talks were needed between the businesses of Gibraltar and La Linea. He suggested that the two areas could collaborate in a tourism campaign in the UK to bring more British into the areas. In a radio interview on Radio Campo de Algecieras he also urged the resumption of trilateral talks in respect of border crossing to speed up the entry and exit to the Rock. More talks are also needed regarding the airport and flights over Spanish territories. Gibraltar Airport came 5th in a recent poll of the most dangerous airports to fly in and out of in the world due to crosswind, beating such places as Hong Kong.

ne of the most shocking results of the May 22 regional and local elections was the fall of the Socialist stronghold, Extremadura. Of all the country’s 17 regions, Andalucia and Extremadura have been the most faithful to the Socialist Party. Even before the civil war broke out, both regions were hotbeds of revolution largely because their small upper classes were extremely rich and determined never to throw a crumb to the hideously poor masses. As a result, communism, socialism and anarchism were rife in both regions, which suffered greatly at the hands of the Franco’s troops, especially the Moroccan contingent, when they overran them in the first months of the war.

oth regions reverted to their left-wing ways when the first free elections were held after the dictator’s death and have been governed by the Socialist Party for the past 32 years in the case of Extremadura and 30 in Andalucia.

o you can imagine the magnitude of political tsunami that occurred when the most voted party in the May 22nd regional election in Extremadura turned out to be the Partido Popular.

ut all was not lost. The Socialists turned to their handy allies, the Communist-dominated Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left), which had helped save Zapatero’s bacon when he failed to get an absolute majority in the 2004 general election. That partnership ended acrimoniously. The Socialists have a nasty habit of being nice to you when they need you and then refusing to return the favour. Zapatero threw the IU a few crumbs, like the Historical Memory Law, which allegedly had the objective of righting the wrongs of the Franco dictatorship. It was admittedly a big crumb because the IU has been using it mercilessly to keep bitter civil war memories alive which it seems to believe will eventually lead to its most cherished dream, the installation of a Third Republic.

owever, IU-Extremadura (IU-E) decided not to play ball this time around. The Socialist Party had won absolute majorities until the 1995 regional election, forcing the then premier Juan Carlos Rodriguez Ibarra to turn to the

IU, promising them the sun, moon and stars if they would help him stay in power. (He was first elected in 1983 and retired in 2007.) The IU swallowed the bait and eventually managed to get the regional parliament to pass several of the laws it proposed. An IU-E spokesman said recently that Rodriguez Ibarra boasted for years that none of those laws were ever enforced. So this time, IU-E decided to sit back, arms crossed, and let the PP take power. This simply means that when the three parties in the regional parliament vote sometime in early July on who will lead the next government, the IU will abstain and the PP will win.

U general coordinator Cayo Lara – a perfect little Stalin if ever there was one – rushed off to Merida, the regional capital, to try to convince local IU leader Pedro Escobar to throw in his lot with the Socialists – even stirring up the worst memories of the massacres carried out by Franco troops during the Civil War – but to no avail. Escobar insisted that the grassroots members would decide – and they voted not to back the Socialists. The latter's sins had finally come home to roost.

ast Sunday, Sr Rodriguez Ibarra showed just how much of a political opportunist he had been when, commenting on events in his former fief, he said “Socialists and communists are bitter enemies”. What cynicism!

n fact one good thing may come out of the debacle in Extremadura – it could be the death knell for the IU. The party picked up a lot more votes all over the country on May 22nd – but only because it fielded more “green” candidates. Seeing how well the strategy worked in the local elections, the IU is now cuddling up to the Greens in the hope of doing better in the next general election than it did the last time around, when it lost three of its parliamentary seats. The Greens and the IU have even less in common than the IU and the Socialist Party had. The Greens want to save Mother Nature while the IU wants to impose a political ideology, so it will be interesting to see how long this latest opportunistic alliance lasts.

eanwhile, the Socialist Party continues to head into its long dark night of defeat.

ildu is showing us that it is not above pressing all the wrong buttons when it comes to governing. The pro-independence coalition that was swept into office in Guipúzcoa province and municipalities across the Basque Country and Navarre has taken a radical posture in dealing with administrative affairs. First, Bildu officials began prohibiting the bodyguards of certain counsillors from entering town halls in a bid to show that there is no longer a need for politicians to have paid armed escorts to protect them. Then in San Sebastián, where Juan Carlos Izagirre took over as mayor, the Bildu-led council took down a portrait of King Juan Carlos from the town hall’s main meeting room.

artin Garitano, a journalistturned-Bildu politician took control of the administrative duties in Guipúzcoa province after the Basque nationalist party (PNV) and the Socialist failed to agree on a partnership to keep the radical coalition from governing in San Sebastian. During his swearing in, Garitano sparked an outcry when he wore a badge with the prison number of Arnaldo Otegi, the jailed former leader of the outlawed Batasuna party. Politicians also complained that Garitano, as well as other Bildu officials, have not made any public demands for ETA to disband.

I don’t like it,” said Prime Minister José Rodríguez Zapatero when asked on Friday about Bildu’s new positioning in the Basque Country. “They will have to respect the law.” What Bildu hasn’t done since it began winning control of the northern municipalities is working just above the law. The Partido Popular (PP), for some reason, believes that it is the Socialists’ fault for allowing Bildu to come into existence. But indeed it was Zapatero’s government which tried to keep Bildu off the ballot on May 22nd by unsuccessfully seeking a court order.

y showing its cards, Bildu is demonstrating arrogance and complete disrespect for Spanish institutions. The judiciary was correct in giving the Basque abertzale radical left a chance to earn voters’ approval by letting them field candidates on the May 22 ballot. What is not correct is allowing Bildu to make its own rules in a region that has been afflicted with tension and violence for the last 50 years. The people at Bildu have been given a golden opportunity to come up with a blueprint for the future without ETA. Unfortunately, Bildu’s contemptuous attitude is starting to gnarl on Spaniards.

very country has them – crazy laws that are on the books that sometimes verge on the hypocritical rather than a legal argument. Take Spain ’s juvenile protection laws, for instance. Newspapers, television and other media are forbidden to show a minor’s face unless they have strict permission from the child’s parents. Yet, for some uncanny reason, images that come from overseas are exempt from this rule. The law is intended to protect Spanish children not the rest of kids around the globe.

hen last week, the Spanish Cinema Academy announced that actors under 16-years of age will no longer be eligible for Goya awards. According to the president, the aim is to avoid "pressures and obligations" that are being imposed on young actors. The move comes after unprecedented awards for new actress and actor were given this year to Marina Comas, 16, and Francesc Colomer, 15, for their remarkable performances in “Pa negre” (Black Bread), a harsh drama about Catalonia in the post-Civil War years. There was some controversy when the two teenagers won their Goyas. A move was initiated among academy members – according to some sources, the sore losers who believe the award should have been theirs – to keep children out of the running. This type of child’s play isn’t right when it is applied on certain occasions for the benefit of some and not all. Minors’ protection laws are more than just disguising a kid’s face or keeping a child from entering the artistic job market at an early age. They should focus on getting the children to school, ensuring that juveniles are afforded the same rights – to some extent – as their parents, and keeping them safe and healthy. It is time to re-examine which laws should be thrown out and which ones need to be revamped.

The girls are allowed anything to keep them in shape, including plastic surgery, so you can be assured that the girls in the finals will be in the best shape possible. The finals will be filmed for Finnish television and will perhaps go towards

the girls making a career in TV, films or modelling. The second and last part of the final will be held tomorrow night, Thursday June 30th at the Discoteca Mai Tai in Fuengirola starting at 11pm. Tickets are €10 per person on the door. The competition has been running in Finland since 2002 and has several hundred contestants competing for the title every year. The winner will receive a fully paid inclusive trip to Las Vegas in July plus a modelling contract for one year and plenty of working opportunities to start them on the career of their choice.

Just oﬀ the road between Campillos and Jerez, Olvera is one of Andalucia’s finest white villages perched high on a rocky outcrop thrust into the eye of a railway-building ´tornado´, although unfortunately the line was never finished.

uch of Olvera’s current popularity and appeal as a place to visit arises out of a remarkable piece of good luck dating back to the 1920s when, in a time of unprecedented economic difficulty, the government decided to invest in the town as the location for a key station on a new railway track being built to ferry grapes and olives from Almargen to the thriving and prosperous sherry town of Jerez. For a few years, Olvera found itself

last word of caution – you shouldn’t expect to hear English being spoken when you visit Olvera - this is the real Andalucia, not the Costa del Sol, so, if in doubt, take a phrase book and enjoy!

he going is fairly easy throughout, even for inexperienced walkers, but if you should decide to take on the entire route, the total linear distance will almost certainly mean you’ll need to arrange transport back to your starting point from whichever end you choose to finish. It’s certainly a full day’s walk so you may even decide to make a weekend of it, as those stiff legs will be calling for a good soak afterwards both inside and out! Whatever your plan, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas that take in farmland, mountains, valleys and forests and you’ll be experiencing a part of

ccording to the museum, the town’s historical roots sink deep in a region that has, over many centuries, been the target of successive conquerors, including the Visigoths, the Romans and later the Moors who, in the 9th century, laid Olvera’s foundations on what, for their purposes, was clearly the most easily defensible site for miles around. And they were right, as it stood unchallenged for almost 500 years until the early 1300s when the Christian forces of Alfonso XI took it back. For so long, indeed until the 1800s, the town was completely out of the reach of the Spanish authorities and became known as a notorious haven for outlaws and fugitives, to be immortalised in an old Andalucian saying, “Kill your man and flee to Olvera”. Happily these days, the locals are less controversial, preferring instead to focus their attention on the many hundreds of thousands of olive trees that stretch away from the town’s boundaries on all sides and make up the mainstay of its modern commercial development.

he Via Verde de la Sierra, to give its full title, is surely one of Andalucia’s most enjoyable and easily accessible outdoor routes. It runs from Olvera to Puerto Serrano, has six viaducts, more than twenty tunnels most with lights, but not all, so take a torch - two restaurants and a delightful small hotel formed in the original railway station building at Olvera. Car parking is free and bikes - and even horses! - can be hired at either end of the route. As it is mainly flat with a level, tarmac surface in places, wheelchair users and/or parents with buggies should be able to cope with the route without too much trouble, although there are some dips and troughs where assistance may be necessary. However, the real pleasure of the Via Verde is in walking the entire 38km (just under 24 miles). If this distance is off-putting, an option would be to drive to Coripe, from which point the distance is only 26km, and there is also the benefit of a pleasant bar/restaurant.

he massive and impressive church hides behind one of this rural region’s few worthwhile museums, and is neighbour to an equally distinctive and recently renovated Moorish fortress, which is one of the finest examples of its type anywhere in the Cadiz province. The historic citadel is encircled by the town’s tumbling terraces of casas blancas – white houses - that seem to cascade back down to the main road with no obviously discernible pattern or plan. Olvera is undoubtedly a very photogenic little town - so make sure you keep your camera handy to capture its

Majestically perched high on a rocky outcrop and visible from whichever direction you choose for your approach, the unusual and most distinctive red and yellow stonework of the Iglesia de la Encarnación church is immediately apparent, and provides the town with something of a signature.

The lovely white village of Olvera is very conveniently located for prospective visitors. It’s just off the A382 Campillos to Jerez road; or a perfect, if somewhat off the beaten track, second stop on a round trip via Ronda, from where it is some 35km to the northeast on the A376 heading for Seville, then turning right onto the A382 near Algodonales.

owever, the good news for today’s walkers and sightseers is that the scrapped railway left behind a trackbed that provides the perfect flat foundations for the town’s main rural tourism attraction - the Via Verde – or ‘Green Way’ - walking and cycling route.

Annie’s life is a mess. And when she finds out her lifetime best friend Lilian is engaged, it brings it all home. Annie (Wiig) is a thirty something singleton who is going through a bit of a bad patch. Her bakery business has folded and she is sharing a flat with two weird and plump Brit men ( watch out for Matt Lucas) and her love life is hopeless. She has a friends with benefits relationship with Ted ( Mad Men’s Jon Hamm) but he calls all the shots. Things start to liven up when her best friend Lilian

(Maya Rudolph – daughter of singer Minnie Ripperton) announces that she is going to get married and asks Annie to be her Maid of Honour. Lilian’s “new best friend” Helen (Rose Dyer) is definitely an organiser who reckons that she knows best so cue some tense moments between her and Annie as they fight over the wedding plans. So far so rom-com. Yes, there

are the set pieces you would expect – all the bridesmaids and the bride to be hit the booze at the engagement party, have a terrible time at the dress selection day caused by mass hangovers, and head off for a never to be forgotten hen party. It sounds a bit like a girly version of The Hangover, but hang onto your hats. There are some gross out moments true, but this

comedy has had even the sniffiest of critics lauding it for its laugh out loud moments. It’s a comedy with a heart, with some poignant messages about friendship and rivalry and is set to be the runaway big laughter hit of the summer. So put Sex and The City behind you and head off for a laughter-fest which will have guys and girls alike enjoying a feast of humour.

top as Hollywood’s finest A listers try to out-pout each other but for me the real fun came from checking oﬀ the list of bloopers and plot failures.

recently spent an enjoyable couple of hours watching what should have been a tense, thrilling disaster movie from 1976 about the prospect of an instantly infectious plague devastating central Europe. During the first half of The Cassandra Crossing, a train full of unsuspecting travellers gradually become infected with a biological warfare agent that the American government just happened to have stashed away in a secret laboratory in Geneva. While the all-star train passengers wrestle with the unfamiliar super-bug, the second half of the film sees tension rise as they realise that their more immediate fate lies not in the jaws of some ferocious pathogen but in the hands of an American General trying to hide the evidence of the infection by sending their train hurtling over a rickety bridge and into the deep canyon below.

irstly, the train is a modern, electrified machine running between European capital cities. That is, until the plot calls for someone to climb on the roof or to be rescued in a helicopter cradle. Then all of a sudden, our electric train is a diesel engine, able to nip through tunnels and along open countryside without the hint of an overhead cable. In another glaring error, the young Martin Sheen is trying to climb along the outside of the train, stretching his legs far apart to gain purchase on the slippery metal windows which are a couple of feet apart from where he is standing and yet only four inches apart on the inside.

ow, while I may have spoiled the plot for myself by checking out the film on Wikipedia as I watched it, my enjoyment was no less diminished as I was lucky enough to come across a page of continuity errors and plot holes that were wider and deeper than the river valley the General was aiming the train at.

Simpson and the story loosely held together all of the necessary ingredients for a good seventies disaster movie. There was the divorced couple looking to get back together, the rich woman of advancing years with her significantly younger toy boy and a perfectly matched, beautiful young couple that represented love’s young dream and everything wholesome in the world. Obviously one of the young lovers dies a tragic, ugly and painful death. Luckily though, despite the cute Basset Hound being the first to catch the plague-like virus from ‘patient zero’, half way through you do get to find out that the dog is recovering and will probably pull through.

Also, fortunately, it leads to Poland, away from civilised Western Europe and into the unpopulated and unimportant hinterland that lies beyond the Iron Curtain. But most fortunate of all has to be that this unused and forgotten section of war time railway line apparently seems to have been blessed with a modern electrified makeover that no-one mentions, and the power is switched on, allowing the (once again) electric train to continue towards the Cassandra Crossing at a pace. Now, it never said on Wikipedia if the Basset Hound lives or dies, so that was still something to keep me glued to the end but I have to say that there was a little twist that I hadn´t seen coming. All in all it was a brilliant piece of dated tat that kept me from gardening, decorating and washing the car for a couple of hours on a Sunday.

The truth has a stabilising effect on you this week and even though there are problems waiting to be solved the scenario is no different to many other situations you have faced in the past. You may be the one who wishes to try a different approach, however, and take more of a risk of expression to see how it is received. Larger forces are at work and this can leave you feeling slightly unsure of your next move. Events are unpredictable. Finances become the focus of this week and you are being given a real advantage to sort out a situation that has been getting under your skin. With a mind as razor sharp as yours you will be able to tell the real value of a thing and not be conned or dissuaded by anyone. If a big purchase needs to be made then this is the time to go out and get that bargain. By the weekend you will have the gumption to follow through confidently on something you have initiated. Things are accelerating with warp speed and you may have a hard time keeping all the balls in the air but keep your centre and hold your ground, keeping hold of the vision of the final destination. Phew it’s hot! So this week, what better than a yummy ice cream cake for the first recipe. It’s good for you because it has fruit in it too..... honestly!

Banana Split Ice-cream cake Ingredients:

Makes 8 servings (or 4 in my house!)

● 3/4 pack Digestive or Chips Ahoy biscuits, bashed into crumbs ● 60gr unsalted butter, melted (The biscuits are quite salty enough!) ● 2 bananas, sliced ● 1 litre vanilla or strawberry ice cream, slightly softened ● 500ml can crushed pineapple, drained ● 8fl oz double whipping cream ● 40gr chopped walnuts or almonds – you can leave these oﬀ if you're allergic and use grated chocolate instead! ● 50gr maraschino type cherries ● 65gr dark chocolate, melted (optional)

Directions 1. Mix the biscuit crumbs with the melted butter then press into a 9-inch pie plate. Once it has cooled, you can drizzle a layer of the optional melted chocolate over the top if you want. This goes crispy and adds extra oomph to the whole thing – lousy for the diet though of course!

1. Peel the marrow, discard the seeds and cut into cubes. 2. Peel and core the apples and cut the flesh into cubes. 3. Place in pan and steam until tender and then mash. 4. Add the lemon juice. 5. Bruise the root ginger and wrap in a piece of muslin and place in the pan. 6. Add the sugar, simmer and stir until

dissolved. Bring to the boil and boil for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally as the pulp thickens and setting point is reached. 7. Pour into hot sterilized jars immediately and cover. (Be careful – if the jars aren't hot, they'll explode with hot jam and glass all over your kitchen! Pop the jars in an oven on low heat for about 20 minutes)

There seems to be a glut of marrows about at the moment and, once you've stuﬀed them with a spicy mincemeat and covered with white sauce, or used them in pesto you're still left with what seems hundreds of these good-for-you vegetables. I'm assured by my neighbour that you can make a wonderful rum out of them using brown sugar but as I'm not sure exactly what the law is here for making what is hooch,I'll keep that one to myself for now. Perhaps someone would like to clarify this point of law for me, then, if I'm not going to be taken to the Alhaurin Hilton, I'll give you the recipe! So, for now, why not try this delicious marrow and ginger jam.

'New drugs' oﬀset cocaine and heroin gains

Diabetes: good and bad news Type 2 diabetes, which affects millions of middleaged people in Europe alone, could be wiped out by

cutting calories severely for just two months, researchers at Newcastle University have said. After a small-scale trial, they found that diabetics who consumed just 600 calories a day – the amount many people would eat at lunch alone – were able to throw away their tablets. Eighteen months on, some are still free of type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and usually occurs in middle age.

A number of new synthetic compounds have emerged, which were commonly marketed as "legal" substitutes for drugs like cocaine or ecstasy, the report said. These include synthetic drugs, as well as drugs based on cannabis, cocaine and opiates, which are often designed to evade regulations or law enforcement, or to replace

drugs that are being supplied in lesser quantities. Some contain unregulated substances and are known as "legal highs". In addition, the non-medical use of prescription drugs was reported to be spreading in developed and developing countries. In Europe, which the UN described as among the most "innovative" regions for new drugs, 40 new substances were notified in the European earlywarning system in 2010, compared to 24 in 2009. The seized drugs included piperazines, cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids, tryptamines and

phenethylamines. Piperazine was developed for the treatment of parasitic worms and as an antidepressant. Derivatives of piperazine are often sold as ecstasy. Other examples of "new drugs" are mephedrone, often touted as a legal alternative to amphetamine or cocaine, and "spice", a synthetic product that emulates the effect of cannabis. Overall, the UN estimated that between 149 and 272 million people around the world used illicit substances in 2009.

Roy Hughes Open letter to Foreign Office minister Mr Jeremy Browne M.P. Dear Mr. Browne, First I must declare an interest. With others my wife, Rachelle, is a founder member of British Pensioners Abroad (B.P.A.) who are supported by The Pension Forum U.K. Their joint aim is to unite all U.K. based and expatriate pensioners in a campaign for a decent living pension for ALL pensioners both at home and abroad. I'd like to start with a couple of quotes which I believe should be borne in mind when reading this letter: 1. Prime Minister David Cameron M.P.: "Pensioners deserve security, dignity and quality of life in their old age." 2. Pensions Minister Steve Webb M.P.: “Today's pensioners will always be my first concern.” I have read with interest the reports in the local English language press of your recent consular road show in Spain. I fully agree with your comments about the need for fuller integration by expatriates living here. As for learning the language, I trust the Spanish translation sent of the gist of what I have to say bears reading! All three of your recommendations are valid. but whilst it is, of course, free to register on the padron, a lack of money restricts access to learning Spanish - not all ayuntamientos offer free lessons and text books are not cheap. I expect your talks with vice consul Steve Jones and local organisations like Age Concern have left you in no doubt of the dire financial straits many British pensioners here are in. The prime minister talks of "dignity". What dignity is there in going cap-in-hand seeking charitable handouts from the local authorities? Most of us have friends and aquaintances amongst the other expatriate E.U. citizens retired here. When we tell them how little we receive in U.K. (after a full working life's National Insurance contributions, remember) they look at us in disbelief and ask "But how can you live on it? “ The answer is we no longer can. The poor everywhere cannot participate fully in society. Just a couple of examples of the monthly state pension for a single person: Spain €601.40(14 payments a year equates to €665 per month), Holland €1,200. Again, I have no doubt that you are fully aware of the following facts, but for those pensioners who still may be unaware of them, I think they are worth repeating here:

Britain has almost the worst state pension in the developed world. It comes third from bottom of 46 countries. This from a country that spends billions on unpopular wars and millions on aid to countries wealthier than our own whilst it leaves its own pensioners in poverty. 2. If the U.K. paid its pensioners the E.U. average of state pensions it would equate to 11.2% of G.D.P. This would give every British pensioner £300 per week. 3. The current state poverty level in Britain is £174 a week(£754 a month) yet the full state pension is £102 a week(£442 a month). A married couple gets £160 a week. 4. A percentage of pensioners, some of them servicemen and women who are veterans of campaigns from W.W.2 to the Falklands War, do not receive even the above currently inadequate amounts. And, British expatriate pensioners are denied any top-ups such as the winter fuel allowance. Unbelievably, from certain politicians now in government, who promised justice and fairness for all during the last general election campaign, existing pensioners and those retiring over the next two years, will be excluded from the proposed non-means-tested flat rate state pension of £155 per week. Some justice! Some fairness! Throughout the E.U. and beyond, (not to mention the current 14,000.000 in the U.K.) there are hundreds of thousands of British pensioners, many of whom retain the right to vote in British general elections. Considerable voting potential you'll agree. I predict that for starters those votes will be going to the party that ensures that existing pensioners are not excluded nor discriminated against when the proposed flat rate pension of £155 per week, per pensioner is introduced. Furthermore, the party that pledges in its party manifesto at the next general election to work towards providing an E.U. average state pension of 11.2% of G.D.P. or £300 p.w. per pensioner will get our votes. Finally, my wife has asked me to let you know that Laura Geddes at the consulate was really helpful and provided much sound advice when she contacted her last year.

e Scorpion As we move through the year, the winter constellations make way for a whole new view of the night sky and we get to see the summer constellations.

ow, I don’t think that many of the constellations look very much like what they are supposed to represent but now and then one of them appears that really does look like its namesake.

ne of these cannot be fully seen from the UK and until I moved to Spain I had never really seen it properly. But at this time of year and at this Southerly latitude Scorpio the Scorpion is dominating the southern part of the sky and I’ve got to admit, the star pattern really does look like a huge Scorpion climbing up the sky. From the UK it is too low down in the sky and the lower half never rises above the horizon.

f you want to find it, go outside after dark and look due south quite low down near the horizon and you will see a bright, red coloured star called Antares. Antares makes up the red eye of the scorpion, above and slightly to the right is the head of the scorpion with its two pincers either side of the head. Now follow the head star back down through Antares and continue following the line of stars that point down to the horizon and you will see that before they reach the horizon they curve up to the left and form the tail of the scorpion’s ‘sting’.

ow it is quite a big constellation, it covers a large part of the southern sky. But once you have found it you will be surprised at how much it really does look like a scorpion!

ccording to Greek mythology, Scorpio was sent by the Goddess Hera to kill the hunter Orion after he had boasted that he could kill any animal in the forest. The scorpion crawled unseen up to Orion and stung him in the ankle. Orion and Scorpio were then placed on opposite sides of the heavens and never appear in the sky together lest the battle continues. Don’t you just love these Greek stories?

ut there is a sad story attached to this constellation. Antares, the giant

red star, is over 600 light years from us and is truly a giant. It is over 700 times bigger than our Sun. If it was placed in the centre of our solar system then its outer edge would be between Mars and Jupiter. If there ever were any habitable planets orbiting Antares then they were long ago swallowed up as it expanded.

ntares is a dying star. It has used up all of its fuel of hydrogen and is becoming a super red giant. Eventually it will explode into a cataclysmic supernova. As it is 600 light years from us then this may already have happened and we are simply waiting for the light from the explosion to reach us.

he tail of Scorpio lies close to the centre of our galaxy the milky way so is a fine area to scan around with your binoculars. It contains several cluster groups of stars that are easily picked up with either binoculars or a small telescope. In particular a tight group of over 100 stars known as Messier 7 (named after the 17th century French astronomer Charles Messier) M7 can be found just to the left of the star that forms the ‘sting’ in the tail of the scorpion. In reasonably dark skies M7 can even be seen with the naked eye, through your binoculars you should be able to see past the stars that make up M7 and directly into the myriad of stars behind that form part of the Milky Way.

Boullier: Renault keen on Webber Lotus Renault GP team boss Eric Boullier has issued an open invitation to Mark Webber by revealing he is keen to sign the Australian if he decides to leave Red Bull Racing at the end of the season.Webber's latest twelve month deal with Red Bull comes to an end at the end of the current season, with the Australian yet to put pen to paper on an extension that would keep him with the team into 2012.

C.O.G.S: make an early ‘ish’ start TeamSky name The early start was made by all to beat the summer heat and we teed oﬀ at 10.00hrs, at the repaired Santa Clara following the storm damage some weeks ago. The course was in good condition as always and the scores reflected that. I spoke to the starter who told me about the damage that had been caused by that Wednesday storm, and that was very apparent when you went around the course. The river area and the surrounding areas have been severely damaged - it has to be seen to comprehend. They had one metre of mud on the 18th green, which had to be removed by hand and now you would never know. Well done to all the staff for their hard work in presenting the course in

such good condition. Once again thanks must go to Mike, Andrea and all the staff at The Bistro for the much appreciated snacks and a warm welcome and Andy and Dave for all their help as always. The recent successful Caritas Charity Golf Tournament at La Cala was a clear demonstration that ‘charity begins at home’.

Over 60 golfers played on the Campo America golf course. The overall winner of the tournament was Javier Cuevas Quero with an incredible 46 points playing off a 20 handicap. Doyle, who played in defence or midfield, scored 32 goals in 448 games for City and won five England caps. With City, Doyle won the old Division One title, the FA Cup, the European Cup winners' Cup and the League Cup twice - scoring in the 1970 final and skippering them to glory in 1976. After leaving City in 1978, Doyle played for Stoke, Bolton and Rochdale.
