Seasonal effect helps numbers - National news
Jobless figures down again Unemployment figures dropped in June for the third month running, boosting the government's claim that there is light at the end of the economic tunnel. However the figure of 67,858 is lower than the drop last June, when dole claims dropped by 83,834. The total number of jobless claiming dole is still over 4.1 million. This does not include another estimated half million people who have run out of dole credits or never had them in the first place. June is traditionally a good month for the
services sector because it is the beginning of the tourist season. But if this seasonal effect were eliminated, the numbers’ experts have said jobless claims would have risen by 31,026 people. A closer analysis also shows that the gap between workers on permanent and temporary contracts continues to grow. Permanent or open-

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Great day!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Once again the weather has been weird for this time of year. normally we have hot, hot sun with no let up at all and, although I've noticed what seems to have been considerably more humidity over the last four summers (yes, it could be “just your age, dear!”) this year seems to be even worse with cloud covered skies keeping all the heat and the humidity in and what seems like no let-up at all until it's time to walk my dogs and the sun then comes out full blast and I end up having to walk them much later when it cools down just that teensy bit.

Clinton's flying visit US Secretary of state Hillary Clinton was only in the country just over 24 hours but during that time, she met King Juan Carlos and had talks with prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, defence minister Carme Chacon and opposition leader Mariano Rajoy. Ms Clinton praised the economic measures taken by Sr Zapatero, advising him that if he were patient and persevered he would get the results he wanted. During her meeting with defence minister Chacon, Ms Clinton praised Spain for supporting the war in Afghanistan and for backing Nato in Libya. The meeting with King Juan Carlos started out with a hug and kisses. The King and Queen Sofia have known the Clintons since
their official visit to Washington in 1993. Towards the end of the stay, Ms. Clinton had a 35minute interview with opposition leader Mariano Rajoy, which surprised some political commentators.

However, with Sr Rajoy tipped to win the next general election, Ms Clinton probably wanted to get to know the man she may have to be dealing with as of next March.
Domestic violence claims more victims The deaths of two women at the hands of their former or current partners last weekend brought the number of women killed so far this year to 31. A 28-yearold Ecuadorian woman was strangled by her partner in
Zaragoza on Sunday in front of her 10-year-old daughter. A few hours later, in Hernani, Guipuzcoa province, an Ecuadorian man knifed his former partner to death and wounded her daughter. Both men have been
arrested and are awaiting trial in jail.
addition to the two women killed on Sunday, the remaining deaths occurred in Segovia, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, Ciudad Real, the Canary islands, Navarre, La Coruña, and Asturias.
Nine women have been killed in Andalucia so far this year, followed by five in Madrid, four in Catalonia and three in Valencia. In

We live near the river but, unlike their mum, neither of them seem to want to “dip their bellies” and cool off in the water so I paddle in and tip water over Posh to cool her down a bit at least, which she thinks is a great laugh. On Monday and Tuesday evenings my friend Jackie walks them and she's as daft as me getting wet with them but, at least I know I can thoroughly trust her to do whatever's best for them any time I'm away, and they absolutely love her! On Saturday, despite the heat, we trolled down to Fuengirola and played mini-golf and went to the zoo for a couple of hours – we have yearly passes so it's not so expensive. Then my husband made me a gorgeous dinner of huge prawns in a creamy sauce on a bed of rice that he'd seen on James Martin's Saturday kitchen that morning.

Reporters were amazed when Andoain town councillor Ainara Rodriguez, who belongs to the Bildu left-wing nationalist coalition, told them that the press conference she was about to give last Friday was to be in the Basque language (euskara) only. It had been called to explain why mayor Ana Carrere had withdrawn her ban on allowing councillors’ bodyguards to enter the town hall so journalists

thought it could have been a face-saving move. But an hour later, when the Bildu mayor of San Sebastian, Martin Garitano, presented the formation of his municipal government only in Basque, the journalists were in no mood to make excuses because the vast majority only speak Spanish. In fact, only 20 per cent of Basques speak euskara on a daily basis, and another 37 per cent use it occasionally.
The fort on Lazareto island in the port of Mahon, in Menorca, belongs to the health ministry which opened it up to the public for guided tours in March this year. However, no tours have yet taken place. There is also a residence on the island for the exclusive use of health ministry officials who can stay there for 16 days for €300, full board included. But only health minister Leire Pajin and her parents seem to have availed themselves of this bargain so far this year, and the Catalan Republic Left (ERC), which claims Menorca is part of Catalonia, has demanded an explanation as to why the general public have not been allowed in for the guided tours and why is the minister using the fort as her private playground. ERC also wants to know when the ministry will “hand back” the property to its rightful owner, that is, the island of Menorca.

Fraud at copyright organisation Teddy Bautista (pictured), the chairman of the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE), the copyright management organisation, was freed without bail on Sunday after appearing before High Court judge Pablo Ruz on charges of serious misappropriation of funds and disloyal administration. SGAE director general Enrique Loras and financial director Ricardo Azcoaga Quincoces were also released without bail on similar charges, which carry jail sentences of up to 10 years. All three have had their passports seized and have been forbidden to leave the country. Two other people, Elena Vázquez and Celedonio Martín, also appeared before the court in connection with the Guardia Civil's “Operation Saga” investigation into a scheme to divert millions of euros in SGAE funds via
businesses that provided non-existent services. Both Vázquez and Martín are connected with Microgénesis, one of the main companies involved in the scheme. Sr Bautista resigned his post at SGAE on Tuesday. The others who were detained – José Luis Rodríguez Neri, director general of the Sociedad de Digital de Autores y Editores (SDAE), a SGAE offshoot; his wife, María Antonia García Pombo, his sister-in-law Elena García and Microgénesis founding director Rafael Ramos –
were released without bail and had their passports confiscated when they appeared before judge Ruz on Monday. The judge said Rodriguez Neri appeared to be the brains behind the scheme but that Bautista went along with him
willingly. The investigation was triggered by a complaint filed in 2007 against SGAE by several internet, computer and restaurant business associations. The SGAE has acquired a bad reputation over the years, having tried
several times to charge copyright fees for works by authors long dead. It has also been known to infiltrate private weddings to check whether fees had been paid for the music played at the reception.

Police arrest two ‘indignados’
What´s a girl like you doing in a place like this? Sor Teresita has spent 84 of her 103 years in the Buenafuente del Sistal convent in Guadalajara, which makes her the longest-cloistered nun in the world. One of a poor family of seven, Sor Teresita told reporters last week that she entered the convent at age 19 to please her father. “We were poor and my father wanted men and one of my sisters to have a better life,” Sor Teresita said, adding with a laugh: “He thought the nuns led a life of leisure.” She is not exactly an unknown quantity, having been interviewed with eh other
nine nuns at the convent for a book about convent life called “Que hace una chica como tu en un sitio como este (What's a girl like you doing in a place like this?)”. And she's not out of touch with the world. She watched all the World Cup games on television last year. The very same day Sor Teresita entered the convent, Joseph Aloysius
Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, in Bavaria so it seems they were fated to meet, and they will, during the Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Madrid in August. It will only be the second time she has left the convent. The first time was when she and the other nuns had to seek sanctuary in the Nationalist zone during the civil war.
The National Police arrested two indignados (indignant ones) on Monday who were among around 400 people protesting the break up of the Real Democracy Now camp in the city’s Plaza de España. Police said one of the men on a skateboard tried to run down a policeman. They later revealed that the 34-yearold man had a police record. The other man detained, aged 19, pushed
and jostled the police. Both men have been charged with “actively resisting” the police and are expected to appear in court on Thursday.
Five year balance Since the points system was introduced on January 1st, 2006, 107,152 drivers have lost all their points once, and 681 managed to lose them all twice. These numbers are negligible in comparison with the four million drivers – 16 per cent of the total – who have lost some of their points in the past five years. Of these, 79 per cent were men, most of
them aged between 25 and 34, and the main reason for losing them was speeding, followed by not using the seat belt or helmet, driving while under the influence and lastly, using their mobile phones while driving. When giving the figures to journalists, Traffic Authority chief Pere Navarro said: “The points system is in good health and has come to stay”.
Support for early election The latest poll by Metroscopia for El Pais newspaper shows that 50 per cent of those questioned want Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to bring the March 2012 election forward. Only 42 per cent want the government to finish its term. A majority think that deputy PM and Socialist candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba (pictured) would make a better president – although they feel he is too identified with Sr Zapatero – but they think opposition leader Mariano Rajoy is better prepared to get them out of the economic doldrums and gave him a 14 per cent lead over the Socialists.

People want “red” money back
Agency puts foot in it Pedestrians on Madrid's Gran Via were astonished on Monday to see a huge billboard with photos of Prince Charles, King Juan Carlos and Bill Clinton, asking what the three “royals” had in common. The answer: they didn't use the Ashley Madison extramarital dating agency. The implication was that they would not have been caught being unfaithful to their spouses if they had. Both the Charles-DianaCamilla “marriage of three” and Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky were international scandals in their day but the Spanish press has always been very circumspect about King Juan Carlos's suspected “flings” and to see him up
there with the other two was shocking, to say the least. It was also a case of bad timing – the ad followed quickly on the heels of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's lightning visit to Madrid last weekend. Needless to say, the ad didn't last long – it was taken down by midmorning – but Christoph Kraemer, communications chief in Spain for the company, couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. “We live in
a democratic country where there is freedom of expression and we haven't offended anyone,” he told reporters. “The King is the head of state but he is also a human being.” He pointed out that in his book “Retrato de un matrimonio” (Portrait of a marriage), the King's biographer, Jaime Peñafiel, named two women in connection with the King. “In the ad, we were only referring to rumours that exist,” Mr Kraemer said.
Some 2,000 families have asked the government to repay the “red” money that the Franco government confiscated from them after 1938. They belong to an association set up in 2005 to collect the receipts and written evidence issued by the Franco regime when Republican currency was seized. A spokeswoman said her maternal grandparents had handed over 1,365 Republican pesetas which would be worth €2,047 based on an exchange rate of one Republican peseta being worth €1.50. In 1938, Franco prohibited the possession of paper currency “issued by the enemy (the Second Republic)”. People had to hand over their savings to the Bank of Spain, private banks and local councils and were issued with receipts, which implied that one day the money would be returned. The association calculates that the 2,000 or so families are now owed €5.300 million.

Mortgage defaulters get more protection The government has approved a measure to protect thousands of mortgaged citizens who cannot meet their payments. Supported by the Basque, Catalan and Canary Island nationalist parties, Parliament approved a resolution last week to raise the amount of a borrower's monthly salary that cannot be seized in case of default on a home loan from the current €641 (the current minimum wage) to €961. If the defaulter has dependants, a further 30 per cent per family member will remain untouchable. VALENCIA
People trafficking network dismantled The National Police have arrested 54 people belonging to a gang which brought illegal immigrants, mainly from India and Pakistan, into the country promising them marriages of convenience for €8,000. The victims paid an initial €8,000 to be smuggled in and another €11,000 for the false documents provided. Most paid off the debt working as agricultural labourers. If they fell behind with payments, the gang threatened to hire hitmen to kill a family member in the country of origin. MADRID
Less abortions The number of abortions has dropped by as much as 10 per cent in some regions since the controversial law allowing terminations without explanations until the 14th week of pregnancy was passed in January last year. Private clinics, which perform 90 per cent of the abortions, have also reported that women are seeking terminations much earlier. The latest figures confirm a trend which started in 2009, when the number of abortions carried out dropped for first time in ten years.

Reconstruction minister quits
Property laws to be reformed
Japan's Minister for Reconstruction Ryu Matsumoto (pictured) announced his resignation on Tuesday after just a week in the job, after being widely criticised for making insensitive remarks to governors of areas badly affected by March's deadly earthquake and tsunami.
People are to be allowed to buy and sell their cars and homes for the first time in 50 years. Private property has been severely restricted on the island since the revolution in 1959. Under the proposed new laws, people will be able to sell their homes for money, not swap them as they currently do. A ban on the sale of cars registered after 1959 will also be lifted, to allow people to buy and own any car they want.
The 60-year-old made the remarks during his first tour of the tsunami-hit prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi on Sunday. Mr Matsumoto berated Miyagi prefecture governor Yoshihiro Murai for keeping him waiting. He then told journalists filming the exchange that it should not be broadcast, saying their networks would suffer if it was. In a meeting with Iwate
MOROCCO
governor Takuya Tasso, Mr Matsumoto warned the government "will help areas that offer ideas, but will not help those without ideas. I want you to work with that kind of resolve". His comments were aired on television, and the footage received thousands of hits on YouTube and other video-sharing websites, prompting a public outcry and calls for his resignation.
Mr Matsumoto's resignation will increase pressure on Prime Minister Naoto Kan's already unpopular government. Last month, Mr Kan survived a no-confidence motion brought by MPs critical of his handling of the reconstruction process following the quake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Mr Kan, who has

Chavez vows to beat cancer
Ratko Mladic led from court
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez addressed thousands of supporters in the capital, Caracas, on Monday night following his return from medical treatment in Cuba. Mr Chavez, 56, had been in Cuba since June 8th, where he underwent an operation to remove a cancerous tumour. He said he would not be able to take part in Tuesday’s national independence celebrations but would watch the parade from the presidential palace.
Ex-Bosnian Serb army head Ratko Mladic was removed from a hearing at The Hague war crimes’ tribunal on Monday after quarrelling with the judge, who ordered him out after continually interrupting the proceedings. From the moment he walked in, Mr Mladic was defiant, observers said. He would not take off his hat; he was communicating with the public gallery, giving a thumbs up; the judge warned him not to do that; he continued to do it
Dressed in his trademark green military fatigues and red beret, Mr Chavez declared "The return has begun," thanking the people for their support. "This is the best medicine for whatever illness." Earlier, Mr Chavez said he had spent "very difficult days" in Cuba but that his recovery was going well. Mr Chavez, who has led Venezuela for 12 years told state TV he was under very strict medical supervision. "with medication, rest, meals controlled".

throughout the hearing. He interrupted the judge at every turn , and then finally when the judge did start to read out the charges, he threw up his hands, started screaming and he had to be removed from the court. Meanwhile, survivors and, mothers from Srebrenica, were also screaming, saying he killed Muslims, that he should plead guilty. Gen Mladic was extradited to the Netherlands from Serbia in May after being captured following 16 years as a fugitive.
King’s constitutional reforms approved
Preliminary results of last week’s referendum show that the constitutional reforms put forward by King Mohammed VI in response to recent prodemocracy protests have been approved. With almost all the ballots counted, 98.5% of people had voted in favour.
The reforms grant executive powers to a prime minister, but the king is retained as head of the military, religious authorities and judiciary. The concessions come after protests inspired by the socalled Arab Spring.

Strauss-Kahn faces FACTORY Offer another rape charge This week only! French writer Tristane Banon is to file a complaint for attempted rape against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, her lawyer said on Monday. Ms Banon, 32, has claimed that during an interview in a Paris flat in 2003, Mr Strauss-Kahn said he would only speak to her if she held his hand. She eventually had to fight him off as they wrestled on the floor and he tried to unhook her bra and undo her jeans. Shortly after Mr Strauss-Kahn was arrested in New York in early May allegedly for assaulting a hotel maid, Ms Banon came forward to say
that he had tried to assault her. Her mother persuaded her not to go to the police at the time, but she did raise the allegation in a TV chat show in 2007, when Mr Strauss-Kahn's name was bleeped out. Mr StraussKahn's French lawyers said on Monday they had been instructed to file a legal complaint against Ms Banon for making false statements about "imaginary" events. Mr
Strauss-Kahn had been a leading contender to be the French Socialist Party's presidential candidate before his arrest in May. Concerns about the reliability of his accuser in New York have left that case reportedly in trouble, and led to speculation that he might return to French politics. Ms Banon is the god-daughter of Mr Strauss-Kahn's second wife, Brigitte Guillemette.
Temple treasure search suspended Inspectors unearthing priceless treasures from a South Indian temple have had to halt their search because the final vault cannot be opened. The inspectors managed to open the outer doors of the sixth vault but found an iron wall inside it. The vault was last opened 136 years ago, according to temple records. Five vaults
full of precious stones, gold and silver have already been opened in Kerala state's Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple. The trove was originally valued at 25 billion rupees ($500 million) but has since risen to 900 billion rupees ($20.3 billion). The temple was built in the 16th century by the kings who ruled over
the then kingdom of Travancore. According to local legends, immense riches were sealed within it. Since independence from Britain, the temple has been controlled by a trust run by the descendants of the Travancore royal family. The inspections were requested by India's Supreme Court.

The Commons Defence Committee has described the revelation as “dismaying” saying "It is alarming that the department should be unaware of the location, usability or, indeed, the continued existence of assets to a total value of £6.3bn. We expect to see an

Three former News Of The World journalists, ex-editor Ian Edmundson, Neville Thrulbeck and James Wetherup have been arrrested and bailed until September in the continuing saga over phone hacking. It was all treated a little tongue-in-cheek when it involved celebrities’ private lives but now it has come to light that The News Of The World journalists allegedly hacked into murdered teeenager Milly Dowler’s mobile phone just after she had disappeared. It has been reported that they even deleted some text messages from her phone, leading her parents to believe she may have still been alive. Rebekah Brooks who is now Chief Executive Officer of News International - The News Of The World is one of their publications - and who was editor of the Sunday paper when Milly Dowler went missing, said that she is “sickened” by the reports but has no intention of resigning . Andy Coulson, who was Ms Brooks deputy at the time has already resigned as Editor of the News Of The World and their royal editor, Clive Goodman was jailed over the phone hacking reports. Labour’s Ed Milliband is demanding a public probe into the scandal. News International are insisting they have already started an internal investigation but added that “it is still in its early stages.”

Verdict given on Heather Barnett murder case Danilo Restivo, 39, an Italian National, was found guilty this week of the murder of Heather almost ten years ago Seamstress Heather Barnett was found in her Bournemouth home in September 2002 by her children then aged 14 and 11-years-old. She was found clutching someone else’s cut hair in her right hand and some of her own hair was found resting below her left hand. Restivo had cut her throat, cut off her breasts and left them on either side of Heather’s body. In the summer of 2004, Restivo was reported to police for stalking. He had a habit of sitting behind women on buses and either pulling or cutting their hair. The murderer was caught using modern forensics after he had wiped himself on a towel at the property. He tried to explain it away by saying
that he had taken the towel with him to talk to Heather about colours for some curtains he wanted her to make for him. Restivo, whose own house overlooked that of his victim even consoled her children after they had discovered their mother and showed no emotion when he was found guilty. Police had suspected him for some time but had insufficient evidence for a conviction until recently. They had been watching him closely and had bugged his house and car. He was eventually arrested on May 19th last year after the discovery of the body of 16-year-old Elisa Claps, who had been missing since 1993, in the loft of a church in Potenza, Italy. Restivo had known the girl and there was cut
hair with the body making the two crimes similar. A jury of five men and seven women took just five hours to find him guilty of the murder. Restivo will be sentenced tomorrow, Thursday, but has been told that he can expect to spend the rest of his life in prison. After the case, Heather Barnett’s sister described her family as survivors, not victims. They were, she said, pleased that justice has finally been seen to be done, adding that her sister would have been horrified at the thought of the murder being designed so that her children would find her mutilated body when they returned from school.
Excuse moi?
A spoonful of sugar.....
One of Google’s latest gadgets is an app for your phone whereby you can talk into it in English and your phone will repeat it back to you or whoever you want to hear it in French.
The National Health Service is using ordinary granulated sugar to help wounds heal. It has long been known that Manuka Honey from New Zealand has amazing healing properties but, as it is only available from there, it is rather expensive.
Described as what was just supposed to be an experiment to begin with, this idea is sure to catch on quickly. So, if you want to find out how to get to the Eiffel Tower from the Gare du Nord, for instance, just talk to your phone and stop a passerby. They can then listen in their own language to your question, answer back in French, then the app will translate it back into English for you – et voila! if you’re lucky, you will get the correct answer.
Google, however, are quick to stress that at the moment the system isn’t perfect and it depends on the amount of noise around you and how clearly you and your navigator speak into the phone – you may just end up doing a tour of the Louvre or the Paris sewers by mistake!”

As a child Zimbabwean Moses Muranda was used to his grandfather putting sugar on their wounds and putting a bandage over it all to keep the sugar in place. Depending on the severity of the wound, the dressing and sugar would be replaced two or three times a day. He has now been carrying out a study at Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital for the past six months. Moses, 43, said he could not understand why doctors in the UK were not using this age-old treatment that draws moisture from the wound. He added it took some time to persuade the managers to let him carry out the trials. Now bosses at the hospital have been so impressed by the results that they have awarded Moses a £25,000 grant to treat a further 100 patients.

Marbella beaches among the worst The beaches from Marbella to Estepona, La Barceloneta beach in Barcelona and those along the 21-km long Manga del Mar Menor causeway in Murcia are the three most degraded coastlines in Spain, according to Ecologists in Action. All three areas suffer from erosion as a result of building too close to the beach, which has also affected the quality of the sand. Ecologists in Action said they were also polluted by residual wastes and noted that the EU
Court of Justice had condemned Spain for allowing untreated sewage to pollute the sea off 38 urban areas of more than 15,000 inhabitants. They also accused the regional governments of
“the systematic nonobservance of the EU's Water Framework Directive because they do not purify and reuse water as the law stipulates which is having tremendous consequences along the coasts”.
A Guardia Civil has been arrested in Malaga in connection with an investigation into child pornography, along with six other people in different parts of the country. The operation, which is being directed by a court in Badajoz, Extremadura in collaboration with the local police chief, is focused on the distribution on the internet of videos with paedophile contents. A sweep of peer to peer files led to a computer in the Serrania de Ronda, used by the detained Guardia. A
search of his home also turned up printed material. Past child pornography operations have ended with the arrests of university professors, doctors, engineers, computer techies, architects, students, an air controller and a priest.
A mildew is seriously threatening the production of Muscat grapes in the Axarquia and could cause losses of up to 80 per cent of the harvest, according to Salvador Fernandez Marin, the mayor of El Borge, one of the biggest producers of the grape in the area. Sr Marin said blight could have a devastating effect on the vineyard owners in the area who receive EU subsidies based on their annual production. The blight could also effect the production of Malaga's famous sweet wine.

What you can't do at the beach Not many people are aware of a Beach Ordinance that Malaga City Council approved in 2004 and this could cost them a lot of money – up to fines of €3,000 in some cases. Most beaches ban dogs and barbecues outside the approved areas and dates (the authorities tend to turn a blind eye to the St John's Night bonfires on June 23rd/24th), fishing from the shore before 9 pm and, wearing earphones to listen to music or playing football or any game involving bats and balls less than six metres away from other people. -From June 1st to September 30th, fishing
from the shore or under water is allowed before 10 am or after 9 pm and not at all on the night of June 23rd when the beach is crowded with people celebrating St John. -No boats or “pedalos” are allowed in areas where people are bathing. -No washing in the sea with gel or soap, which cannot be used under the freshwater showers or in the footbaths provided on

-No parking or driving allowed on the sand. Vehicles and wheelchairs for the disabled are excepted. -Tents or anything that looks like a semi-permanent camp are a no-no. Only towels and parasols, thank you. It all boils down to common sense - don't do anything that would bother you if someone else did it.

Making the beaches safe
Mijas takes on food vendors, dog owners Mayor Angel Nozal has instructed the Local Police to get tough on people selling pastries, fruit and other perishable food on the beach as they are doing so without a licence and are contravening the hygiene laws. He has also asked them to make sure the food stalls near the beach have licences. Owners who do not pick up their dogs' waste not only have to keep a lookout for uniforms – the mayor plans to send out plain clothes policemen to catch the offenders. Fines range from €750 to €1,500 for first offenders and up to €3,000 for incorrigible dog owners.
Local councils have stepped up their efforts to make Costa beaches safe in an attempt to avoid a repeat of last year’s 12 drownings. In addition to Civil Protection and Red Cross stations, more than 400 lifeguards will keep a watchful eye on bathers. Marbella leads the field, with 69 lifeguards on weekdays and 100 on weekends patrolling 14 beaches along 27 kilometres of coastline. To ensure rapid action, they will use three motorbikes, a boat, two quads, three 4x4s and several bicycles. GRANADA
Residents want a clean-up Tired of cleaning up dog poo, the residents of the city’s Albaicin district, which attracts hundreds of tourists every day, have decided to take their case to Unesco, which made it a World Heritage Site several years ago. They claim their appeals to the Junta de Andalucia and Granada City Council for more police patrols to catch the four-legged culprits or their twolegged owners have been in vain. They say the authorities have neglected the area and want Unesco to put pressure on them. TORREMOLINOS
Police free kidnapped woman A Belgian woman who arrived last week to look after an elderly couple ended up locked in an apartment by the man who had lured her to Spain. She had met him in Belgium a few months ago and he had asked her to come to Spain to look after his parents, who did not exist. When she told him she wanted her to go home, he locked her in the flat. Hearing her screams, neighbours called the police, who freed her on Monday.

Positively Pink charity is coming to the Costa this week Positively Pink (charity no G92860477) the registered Breast Cancer charity based in Mijas Costa is pleased to announce that it is funding a programme of free breast screening again this summer for all British women over the age of 18. Positively Pink is dedicated to education and early detection, and their free screening programme ensures that all British women have access to breast screening. Lorraine Palmer the founder of the charity believes that “early detection is your protection”, and last year Positively Pink funded the screening of nearly 1000 British women here on the Costa del Sol, helping to save six women’s lives. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine. Each year there are approximately 41,000 new diagnoses. The incidence of breast cancer for men is on the increase too with approximately 300 new cases diagnosed yearly in the UK. It has been shown that early detection of breast cancer can
definitely improve the outcome. Survival rates from breast cancer have improved partly in recent years due to early presentation and from individuals becoming ‘breast aware’. So, what is breast awareness? Breast awareness is a process of knowing what is normal for you and becoming familiar with the appearance of your breasts. It is about being aware of your breasts when carrying out daily activities such as washing and dressing. By looking and feeling and becoming more familiar with your breasts at different times you can become more breast aware. You do not have to examine your breasts in a particular way or at a particular time. Do what feels best for you and make breast awareness a normal part of caring for
5
00
your body. 90% of cases of breast cancer are detected by women themselves or by their partners. By being breast aware, and knowing what is normal for you, you will be able to detect any changes, should they occur. Follow the Breast Awareness Five Point Code: • Know what is normal for you • Look and feel • Know what changes to look for • Report any changes without delay • Attend for breast screening The Normal Breast: It is important to know what is normal to expect breasts to feel like and also how they can change throughout your lifetime. Before the menopause breasts feel different at different times of the month, as they are
affected by the hormonal changes in the milkproducing tissue. For some women their breasts may feel lumpy or tender before a period. After the menopause the breasts will not be affected by monthly hormonal changes and will feel less firm, softer and without lumps. If you have had a hysterectomy your breasts will usually show the same monthly changes until the time when your periods would have stopped Changes to Look Out For: When looking at and feeling your breasts be aware of anything that is new for you or that is not normal for you. Look for any changes in the skin, any puckering or dimpling. Look and feel for any lumps or bumps, especially if different from the other breast. Be aware of any pain or discomfort in one
9
95
breast that does not go away. Also be aware of any changes in your nipples; any discharge, bleeding or rash or any change in the position of your nipple. It is important to know what sort of changes to look out for, but it is equally important to report them to your doctor/ nurse without delay. There are many reasons for breasts to change and many of them are harmless, but all need to be checked out. You will not be wasting anybody’s time and the earlier any problems are detected the easier the treatment is likely to be. Breast Screening Programme: The risk of breast cancer increases with age. 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. In Spain, women over the age of 50 are offered routine
mammograms to help detect breast changes at a very early stage. Women under the age of 50 are offered breast screening when the need arises. Prevention and early detection is your best line of defense. Appointments will be available in La Cala during the months of July, August, September and October 2011 in conjunction with a local radiology clinic. This year’s campaign is sponsored by The Hospital Group, The British Surgical Clinic and Medilink all local healthcare businesses who have an ethos of “Working together with our local community because your health really does matters.” To make an appointment call 952 933 876 or email medilinkspain@gmail.com

Community 110 years of Anniversaries The Venerable David Sutch, the Chaplain of the Anglican Chaplaincy of St Andrew, celebrated his 40th anniversary of being ordained a priest, the Revd John Ball, Assistant Chaplain in the Chaplaincy celebrated his 40th anniversary of being ordained a deacon and the Revd Bob Bates and his wife Diane, of St Vincent’s Chaplaincy in the Algarve, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. The anniversaries were jointly celebrated at a service of Holy Communion in St Andrew’s Church, Los Boliches, attended by people from all four corners of the chaplaincy, representatives from other coastal chaplaincies and denominations and former parishioners from Ven David’s many years of ministry in England. The Dean of Gibraltar, the Very Revd John Paddock, preached a very witty sermon with many biblical references to 40 years, such as Moses leading the
people of Israel for 40 years in the desert, using humour to make many telling and profound points concerning following God’s calling and the life of ministry. Ven David and Revd John were both presented with engraved crystal decanters while Revd Bates and Diane were given crystal goblets. After the service the company transferred to a local chiringuito for lunch– which in typical Spanish style didn’t end until well after 4:00pm. Amongst the many messages and cards was a message from Bishop David Hamid, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Europe, who in addition to warmly praising Ven David’s ministry and devotion, recognised and commended the support that Ven David’s wife Megan has given to him throughout his ministry – a point that the Dean had made concerning the copntribution of all clergy wives.

Walk for life Cindy Jones and a group of friends recently carried out a 5km sponsored walk from Competa to Canillas de Albaida and managed to raise an impressive €4.100 for Cudeca. Approximately two hundred people visited an open air general craft market and a separate Flavours of the World Food Hall with tasty Caribbean and healthy Mediterranean dishes, Spanish and English food and even a Moroccan tea tasting. Children were entertained with a bouncy castle; face painting and a nonalcoholic cocktail bar. Andy
Time, Fabel and DJ Tom provided the wonderful musical entertainment. Cindy Jones is sincerely grateful to everyone who helped to make the day such a success; all the walkers together with their generous sponsors, all the volunteers who assisted on the day and everyone who came along and joined in the fun. A special “thank you” to the team who helped arrange the day; two CAMPO team members, Debi Bond and Penny Sparks, together with Inez Leniere, Jean Sampson and Remy Goeloe.
Hula event raises more than coconuts Thanks to the organisers, Richard and Julie Woods, and to the staff at the restaurant, the Hawaiian and Caribbean lunch run by Age Concern was a great success. Over 80
people enjoyed fabulous food, good company, entertainment and fun! Nearly €400 Euros were raised at the event which will all go towards supporting the volunteers
who work in the community with older people. Adrienne from CAP provided the entertainment – there was also a limbo dancing session! The winner of the
‘most aptly dressed guest’’ was Pat Smith from the ICE club. The event was well attended and special thanks go to ICE and CAP for their continuing support.

The effect of the above tax cuts and other changes is that everyone earning up to £8,000 p.a will continue to pay zero tax, everyone earning up to £15,000 p.a. will now pay tax at an effective rate lower than 11%, and everyone earning up to £20,000 at an effective rate lower than 15%. Everyone earning up to £25,000 will pay at an effective rate lower than 17% and everyone earning up to £40,000 at an effective rate lower than 20%. The maximum effective rate of tax in Gibraltar is now 24.99% (not reached until income of £300,000). There will be a public sector pay rise of 2.5% despite no rise in UK. As a result of these tax cuts 43% of people who pay tax now do so at an effective rate less than 15%, 85% of people who pay tax now do so at an effective rate less than 20% and 100% of taxpayers who pay tax now do so at an effective rate less than 25%. There will be another opportunity for married women to pay the difference between married women and full social insurance contribution rate for pensions. A Child Welfare grant is available for the first child at £25 per month. Unemployment benefit is up 10%. A two-week paternity allowance has been established at £87.64 per

There has been a 6% increase in university student maintenance grants. This increase is worth£261 outside London and £358 in London. The rates “early payment” discount has been restored to 20% for the retail and wholesalesector, including bars and restaurants plus an additional 10% rates refund for bars and restaurants that do not permit smoking. Import duty has been reduced from 12% to 6% on televisions, hi-fi and other electronic or electrical audio or visual equipment and accessories, tableware and kitchenware and other household goods sunglasses and spectacles, lamps and lighting, paints and varnishes, tools, toys and lastly on porcelain and glass objects and ornamental goods. However import duty is up 12p per pack of 20 on cigarettes and £2.50 for a 250 gram pouch of rolling tobacco. The average electricity bills will rise 3% which is less than inflation and running cost rises. (Information released by the Gibraltar Government)

Crime solving up Figures for the year 2010 2011 show that the Royal Gibraltar Police’s crime solving rate is up on the previous year with the number of crimes reported rising from 4,647 to 5,256 and the detection rate leading to charges rising from 63% to 71%. However, the number of violent crimes being solved dropped dramatically during the year with 187 being reported against last year’s 147 and 103 the year before that, with the detection rate falling from 76% in 2009/10 to 55% last year.

What a nightmare
Bad timing
I
P
suspect the Partido Popular is beginning to regret its big win in the May 22nd local elections. All the new PP mayors are looking at empty coffers and huge debts, wondering just how they're going to pay their bills. The PP must have known what was going on because it’s difficult to keep a council’s spending a secret but I doubt they knew the enormity of the debts they will have to pay – out of empty coffers.
J
ust one example. Here in Coin new mayor Fernando Fernandez Tapia will be lucky if he can pay council staff their salaries at the end of this month. Last week, Endesa was threatening to cut off the electricity in both town halls (the new and the old one which is still in use). He inherited a debt of more than €27 from the Socialists and is in the unpleasant position of not being able to finish the work to beautify the town’s main square, the Alameda.
T
he Junta de Andalucia paid the old council the full amount of the estimate for the work – just over €480,000 – but in what he thought would be an election-winning move, former mayor Gabriel Clavijo leapt into action at the beginning of the year and diverted some of the money to improve several other streets in the town. He had promised to have the Alameda ready in time for Easter Week but today we have a tatty-looking square instead of the very agreeable one of yore which was the hub of so many cultural events. The new mayor has taken a cut in salary but that won’t even pay for a day’s supply of electricity.
T
he same is happening up and down the country – the only difference being the size of the debts. One municipality in Madrid is looking at a debt of several millions while the Mijas mayor has a phone bill of more than half a million euros.
L
ast week, the government in Madrid approved the creation of a credit line of €3,400 million at the Official Credit Institute (ICO), which will handle the councils' debts for them. Then the government will impose a spending ceiling on itself and on the councils. Hopefully, the plan will work.
R
ight now, it’s one big sorry mess and the only solution is to put the regional and local governments on a very tight leash, something the PP has threatened to do if it wins the next election. However, it will have to win with an outright majority because it will not be able to rely on support from the regional parties represented in Parliament.
T
he simple truth is that the regional governments as they stand are not viable. The problem goes way back. Before the unification of Spain by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, the country had been a collection of kingdoms with only one thing in common – their religion, which the Catholic Monarchs used as a banner to drive the Moors out of Spain.
S
ince then, the different regions have hung together, with the exception of the Basque Country and Catalonia which have never wholeheartedly felt part of Spain and Catalonia in particular had made several attempts to break away over the centuries.
T
he Republican government (1931-1936) stirred up things when it granted statutes of autonomy to Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia. Franco put an end to that, then divided the country into 50 administrative provinces, under the motto “One, free and great”. After Franco died it was assumed that these three regions would be given some form of self-government. However, by the time the first post-Franco general election was held in 1977 it had become obvious that the other regions would also want to get in on the act.
T
hus under the Constitution that was put to the vote in a referendum in December 1978, the so-called Autonomous Community - which could be a single province (Madrid) or several neighbouring ones (Andalucia) - came into being.
E
ach Community has its own premier, government, legislature and Supreme Court and took over in the areas of housing, town and country planning, agriculture, tourism, sport, health and social services, while the central government had “exclusive responsibility” for foreign affairs, defence, the administration of justice, foreign trade, merchant shipping and civil aviation.
S
o what we have today in Spain is 17 regional governments all spending as lavishly as the central government in Madrid – a sure road to bankruptcy.
T
he Constitution of 1978 let the tigers out of the cage and only a drastic reform of that constitution will put them back in. Opinion polls taken over the past couple of years indicate that the Spanish public is aware of the problem and would welcome a curtailment of regional powers. It all hinges on the PP winning the next election with an outright majority – then having the guts to grasp the tigers by their tails.
eople still believe they can get away with murder. Okay, maybe not genuine homicide, but a multimillion euro slaughter of a fund that you and I no doubt have paid into at one point in our lives. On Friday, police exposed a scheme involving the massive diversion of money allegedly orchestrated by the directors of the contentious copyright organisation the Society General of Authors and Editors (SGAE) and its obscure sister group Digital Society of Authors and Editors (SDAE). SGAE chairman Eduardo “Teddy” Bautista and eight others were arrested in raids and hauled before the High Court after investigators determined that he and the other defendants may have misappropriated as much as €400 million. The SGAE is the organisation that for years demanded that store owners and dealers pay as much as one euro on every CD, DVD or computer disc they sold “to protect” intellectual property. The costs, of course, had to be passed on to the consumer. If the allegations are true, then these people at SGAE demonstrated that they were smart enough to dupe us all for a long time.
I
t appears from the allegations that SDAE’s director general José Luis Rodríguez Neri was the mastermind behind the scheme. For 10 years, he allegedly came up with ideas to divert the money by setting up shell companies which, according to High Court Judge Pablo Ruz, Bautista had “authorised, went along and even encouraged” it. The investigation began in 2008 and apparently Bautista and the others knew that the police were on their trail last week so they ordered the liquidation of SDAE just one day prior to their arrests. The co-defendants are family members and personal friends of Neri’s. Both Neri and Bautista were allowed to post bail.
B
efore coming on the board at SGAE, Bautista was a well-known musician in the electronic jazz circuit. He lived in the United States and Cuba, and was one of the most vocal supporters of upping the penalties for those who produce pirate DVDs and CDs.
Throughout his tenure at the SGAE, he controlled every aspect of the copyright organisation as if it were his own fiefdom. He made a lot of enemies, including many in the entertainment business because of his reported dictatorial manners.
I
n the current climate, there is going to be little sympathy for a group of people who may have misappropriated millions. Financial crises are never favourable periods for the plunderers of coffers when they are caught. Why it took the authorities four years to conclude an investigation is beyond anyone’s guess. But unfortunately for the defendants they have been exposed at a delicate time when the public impact of the alleged crimes will be even greater.
Hillary’s visit
T
he American secretary of state Hillary Clinton came to town for an overnight visit – mainly to give Spain some encouragement over the reforms being carried out by the Zapatero government. “We understand the difficulty of those steps and we know that Spain still faces important challenges," she said on Saturday. Interestingly enough, she made those comments right after meeting Partido Popular (PP) leader Mariano Rajoy, who now knows that the United States will support Spain if the reforms are persistent. Rajoy has done nothing but to attack the Zapatero government and declined to offer any help at all in dealing with the crisis. The PP’s rhetoric of early elections is abundant. Washington has already told some Socialist leaders to hand on so as not to disturb the markets and Rajoy knows this. Whether Mrs. Clinton told Rajoy that he needed to remain on course if he wins next year’s election is unclear. Some tried to read into the secretary of state’s meeting speculating that it could be seen as a sign. Clinton told reporters that it was normal to meet leaders of the opposition when she travels abroad.

UK to relax pet entry rules It will become cheaper and easier to travel abroad with pets when new rules are introduced at the start of next year. The UK will harmonise its pet movement rules with the rest of the European Union from 1st January 2012, bringing the UK ’s pet travel scheme into line with the most recent scientific findings. The UK will maintain its high level of protection against animal diseases after the changes, which have the potential to save pet owners around £7 million in fees. Forcing pets to spend six months in quarantine, a practice dating from the 1800s, is no longer necessary because of vastly improved rabies vaccines and treatments and all pets will still need to be vaccinated against rabies. Pets from the EU and listed non-EU countries such as the USA and Australia will no longer need a blood test and will only have to wait 21 days before they travel. Pets from unlisted nonEU countries such as India,
Brazil and South Africa will be able to enter the UK if they meet certain strict criteria to ensure they are protected against rabies, including a blood test and a three-month wait before they can enter the UK . The changes will ensure the risk of rabies coming to the UK remains extremely low. It’s estimated that the new rules mean there would be one case of rabies in a pet in the UK once every 211 years, with the possibility of a person dying from rabies obtained from a pet once in every 21,000 years. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said: “The UK’s quarantine system was designed to combat the threat of rabies in the 19th century and has now been left far behind by scientific advances. It’s time we changed these outdated rules which have caused
hardship to generations of pets and pet owners, and those who rely on assistance dogs, with too many animals cooped up unnecessarily. “What is needed is a simpler, evidence-based system for protecting the UK from rabies which recognises the actual risk to pets and pet owners. The EU’s pet movement scheme has been working very well for nearly a decade, and it makes sense for us to have similar rules. It means the UK will remain protected from rabies and other exotic diseases while making it easier and cheaper for people to take their pets abroad.” Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: “Rabies is a very serious human disease and the rabies-free status of the UK must be protected. The pet travel scheme provides
important protection of public health by ensuring that pets entering the UK are free of rabies and other infections. “Scientific evidence shows that there is a robust alternative to quarantine in preventing rabies incursion from those countries where there is a high incidence of rabies and good reason for changing our very precautionary rules. The EU pet travel rules have been successful in preventing any cases of rabies occurring in legally moved pets since the scheme started, so harmonising the UK ’s rules with those of the EU will make it easier for those who wish to travel with their pets. “It is important to continue to protect the public against the risk of serious exotic tapeworm infections and the government is pressing to retain our tapeworm
controls for pets entering the UK . The wider public health risks from exotic tick-borne infections and the need for tick controls for pets entering the UK will be kept under review.” The UK has been discussing with the European Commission the most appropriate form of tapeworm controls for dogs, to ensure the UK continues to be protected from Echinococcus multilocularis. The Commission has recently indicated that its proposals, expected shortly, would enable the UK and other tapeworm-free countries to retain tapeworm controls, with a requirement that animals be treated between one and five days before returning to the UK. Tick treatment for pet animals returning to the UK will no longer be required. All pet owners travelling abroad with their animals
should discuss with their vets the use of treatments, including those designed to control ticks as part of good animal health practice. The UK, along with Ireland, Sweden and Malta, has an exemption from the standard EU pet travel rules. They are all harmonising their entry rules with the rest of the EU at the same time as the UK . nce inside Las Islas you would not realise that you are still on an urbanisation. The mosaictopped tables are set around a crystal clear pool and surrounded by beautiful gardens and, if you go for lunch, there are loungers around the pool to relax on afterwards. Different coloured middle eastern style lamps hang from the loggias and walls casting a rainbow of light. But don’t be worried – the lighting to eat your food by is just right and subtle enough so that you’re not sitting in almost floodlit conditions as in some restaurants. The thoughtful way the lighting has been arranged makes for marvellously intimate dining whether for two or for a dinner party with friends. The seating is comfortable too so you will be able to have an unhurried meal at Las Islas. There are sea views and terracotta winding paths to stroll along through the Mediterranean gardens complete with bougainvillea, oleander and wonderfully colourful
ain courses continue with everything from a Grilled Irish fillet steak, Chicken breast stuffed with cheese and serrano ham and the Las Islas roast lamb marinated in fine herbs and served with a pear and mint sauce. For non-meat eaters you can choose from Hake with prawns in a white wine sauce, Grilled seafood kebab, Pasta with a tomato sauce, garlic and prawns or a very simple but delicious Pasta with olive oil, garlic, chilli and parsley. Main courses are from €9.50 up to €22.50.

The four-man Monkey Tennis Band; keyboards, guitar, drums and bass is rated as one of the most popular bands around and draws a fair crowd. The full six-man band really packs a wallop, and adding the two man brass section, Antonio swinging on a saxophone and Chinchi tooting on a trumpet really opens up their musical repertoire no end. This is a great show with all the charisma, energy and depth associated with the bigger band sound or - in short it rocks!

hilst I am not the sort of person who rants on about the “good old days” saying how great things were when I was a kid, (ignoring rickets and the like) I do think it’s a shame that the tradition of Saturday Morning Pictures is no longer the regular activity that is was to many of my generation.
MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Transformers
B
Dark Of e Moon BY MICHAEL BAY Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
This latest in the Transformer franchise starts in the 1960s, when it turns out that Russian and US lunar missions were sparked off by the discovery of an unknown vessel on the dark side of the moon (why does that sound familiar – ah, Pink Floyd fans rejoice). Anyway, decades later and Obama is in the White House. And now we discover the dark secret of the object that was retrieved by the Russians. Cue for some sparkling 3D sci-fi epic battles between the “good” Autobots and the “bad” Decepticons. And at the heart of it, as usual, is our hero Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf ).
Megan Fox was dumped by Bay after making some unflattering comments about him, so Sam’s love interest is now Carly Miller, a government worker. Now, Megan Fox is never likely to feature on the Oscar nomination list, but it’s generally been agreed that underwear model Rosie Huntington-Whitely, who plays Carly, is a
shockingly bad actress. Lucky for the movie that there are some genuine heavyweights in the mix – Oscar winner Frances McDormand adds a bit of gravitas in her role as head of the national intelligence agency, and John Malkovich does what he does best. Not to worry too much about the acting though, because the movie
is all about fabulous action sequences and epic battles and there are plenty of those to take the breath away. The film clocks in at two hours and 35 minutes so its probably going to be a big hit with lovers of the franchise, but have a little less draw for those new to the series.

eing a member of the ABC Minors’ club at the local fleapit, as it was known, was a real treat for a shilling or about 5p in today’s sterling. Anyway, I digress, for me the joint hero of the day was always The Lone Ranger who seemed to be completely invincible and could right any wrong bestowed on the world, or at least Americas Wild West, no matter how grave the situation. That is as long as he had Tonto around to help him when he wasn’t quite the clever clogs he thought he was and ended up being gagged and bound by the villain. I always thought that Tonto never really got the credit he deserved.
C
layton Moore played the part of the masked hero from 1949 until 1957 in the TV series and the Movies, Tonto was played by 3 actors, John Todd, Roland Parker and my favourite, Jay Silverheels who was the son of a real Canadian Mohawk chief. As an actor he never really found fame after being typecast as Tonto but had to contend with smaller cameo roles alongside more famous actors.
T
he Lone Ranger series included dialogue which was alien to me and was my first introduction to catchphrases. To hear the other kids in the cinema all chanting “Hi Ho Silver Away !!” and calling each other Kemo Sabe was like a whole new world, and I was part of it. The final memory of the Lone Ranger at the pictures was that the stories were serialised and with the nerve jangling cliffhangers at the end, it almost guaranteed you would be back next week.
A
ll the kids at my local would stamp their feet, shout and holler to the tune of the William Tell Overture as the Lone Ranger rode away with his trusted friend into the distance, just as one cast member was given the task
of asking “ Who was that masked man?” Ahh memories indeed.
M
y second joint hero of the day was Superman. Whilst I could rationalise in my young head the antics of the masked hero on his trusty steed , I was blown away by the idea that someone from another planet had arrived on earth and had such awe inspiring powers enabling him to defeat anyone in the world. You could shoot him with a bullet, try to blow him up with a grenade or even try one of those little plastic laser guns (special effects department on a tight budget!!) all to no avail, Superman could survive it all. He was in fact responsible for me wishing I could also fly, trying out my newly learnt skills after the cinema led to many a nasty graze I can tell you.
S
uperman has been around a long time and he began life (or was created) in 1938 as a comic book hero by partners Jerry Siegel (American) and Joe Schuster (Canadian) I bet they never imagined the character would remain so popular for so long.
S
uperman has been played by a number of actors over the years and the first being Kirk Alyn in a 15 episode mini series in 1948. No, I have never heard of him either !!
G
eorge Reeves played Superman from 1951 in over one hundred episodes until his mysterious death in 1959 and was the face of Superman during my youth, When I recently looked back at some of the original “special effects”, I can see now that they were actually quite “rubbish effects” but at the time, nothing would have swayed me from following one of my all-time heroes every Saturday morning.
W
hilst the faded memories of the Lone Ranger gallop in the distance of my own mind, the legend that is Superman, has stayed with me for years, I particularly liked Christopher Reeve in the role and I hear rumours the Henry Cavill, that fine actor from the Tudors is about to take up the mantle. I can’t wait.

Nothing great ever happened without there being some degree of stress involved in the transaction. There is normally some added pressure that kicks starts something into action. You will feel that you are being pushed this week and you will expend extra focus, time and effort in order to blow past some obstacles that stand in your way. Get to grips with clearing the decks and getting some organisation into your life – you will be able to think clearer. You will be revisiting something from the past that you valued at one point but never carried it through, perhaps at the time it was simply not right. However, many different scenarios have fallen into place and perhaps the time is now, with extra courage coupled with extraordinary precision you are about to make something happen Speak up and out, reaching far and wide, the road is about to be cleared and your voice is going to be heard. Choices you are making now and setting into motion are intended to lead you into a future that is less erratic and unstable, there is a consistent energy coming your way. Keep your feet on the ground during this wild emotional current that is occurring and when you start to wobble just hold an image of the future that you desire and then project it into your field of vision. This is no time to take a break but rather time to tackle and address that which is getting in your way. This is a week for swift and powerful change. An emotional grip that has had a hold on you is finally setting you free; a lingering weight has at last left your shoulders. There has been a lot of inner work that you have been doing and now this is ready to emerge and catapult you far along the path, you just need to knuckle down and trust in your own emotional strength, not allowing yourself to be caught up in the draining effect of another’s actions. Hold your ground.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
Still boiling out there so I’m into salads at the minute. Most people love potato salad but it can be a bit boring. This one with a couple of additions makes all the difference. Yum!
e best potato salad in the world Ingredients: ● 1 kilo clean, scrubbed new potatoes ● 6 eggs ● ½ kilo bacon ● 1 onion, finely chopped ● 1 stalk celery, finely chopped ● 5 fl oz mayonnaise ● salt and pepper to taste
Directions
A finale is finding its way to you connected with a relationship or friendship from your past, the old or unfinished comes back into your life so that it can be healed and cleared. This coming week is all about starting over with a different perspective and a new outlook, slowly you will start to feel more at home and at peace with yourself and the way things have turned out. Those days of inner loneliness that you have felt will be laid to rest soon.
1. Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Add the potatoes and cook them until tender but still firm – about 15 minutes. Drain, then put them in the refrigerator to cool.
You are in a strong position now and are more self-reliant than you were even a few months ago. Someone may cause you to question their intentions, or in the past they have let you down and you are worried about it happening again. Do you give them a second chance? You have changed, you are more confident and you will have to trust your inner hunches. There are some interesting offers and options coming your way.
2. Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring the water to the boil and immediately remove from the heat. Cover and let the eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the hot water, cool, peel and chop.
3. Place the bacon in a large, deep frying pan. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown and crispy. Drain, crumble and set aside. 4. Chop the cooled potatoes, leaving the skin on. Add to a large bowl, along with the eggs, bacon, onion and celery. Add the mayonnaise, salt and pepper to taste and mix very gently so as not to damage the potatoes. Chill for an hour before serving.

You like to keep things close to your chest but there is also great freedom in having nothing to hide. If you wish a relationship to grow to a new level it is time for a “truth” discussion where you lay all your cards on the table. It is all about tackling the things that need to be said, laying misunderstandings to rest, then you can start afresh with a solid foundation so that you both know where you are.
LESSON
This is nose-to-the-grindstone week, there will be plenty of time for fun later. Home and career demand your attention as there are great changes on that front especially when it comes to commitments and agreements. Whatever you are investing your energy in, you are planting the seeds for a new and better future. Visible rewards for all the hard work and tears you have put in rd September 23 will start to bear fruit by mid July. nd October 22
Who’s who in the Spanish family I expect most of us know that el padre is the father and la madre is the mother and that following the tendency for Spanish to be male dominant los padres is the parents.
SAGITTARIUS Full of fire and energy, your enthusiasm and dynamic energy lift us all up and out of our current moods. There is a blast of energy that you are feeling inside that is motivating you to get in touch with your creative self. You will be profoundly inspired to express yourself in different ways. Acquaintances flock around you and your circle expands, networking is second nature. An uplifting nd November 22 and expansive time for you. st December 21
CAPRICORN The key to this week is not to become overly attached to how and when things are going to happen. The more flexible you are, the happier you will find yourself feeling. Let yourself take a break from the need for controlling all the details. The new solar eclipse has given you the opportunity to start to relate differently to those that you love by gentling that tough exterior of yours down December 22nd a notch and this softening approach reveals the real you inside. Get rid of those self-defeating thoughts – it really does you no good and this is one habit you will want to lay to rest. You are in the position to perfectly make assessments of what you see going on around you. Be careful that you are seeing the whole picture, however, as you could lack crucial components to what is going on. It is up to you to dig deeper into the current situations you are now facing, which may mean you have to ask more prodding questions than usual. With all the eclipses going on this season you are feeling unusually grounded within it all as Mars is helping you secure yourself like an anchor deep in the sea. You respond to adversity with a strong drive and the desire to ensure such negative outcomes never happen again. In fact there is no stopping you right now - your mind is crystal clear and you have the ability to intuitively sense the whole. Trust in your own feelings and you can’t go wrong.
In the same way we find : El hijo is the son, la hija the daughter and los hijos the sons and daughters, El hermano the brother, la hermana the sister and los hermanos the brothers and sisters. However, here in Spain there is inevitably a considerably larger range of relatives to be found at any family gathering. Once the hijos (sons) and hijas (daughters) have grown up they may have novias (girlfriends) and novios (boyfriends). My son’s girlfriend is La novia de mi hijo My daughter’s boyfriend is El novio de mi hija If these are considered to be in a fairly stable relationship there is a tendency to refer to them as the son-in-law el yerno and the daughter-in-law la yerna. These in turn will refer to their partner’s parents as el suegro the father-in-law and la suegra the motherin-law, collectively known (affectionately or not as the case may be) as los suegros the parents-in-law. Next time July 20th we’ll look at some of the members of the more extended family. Hasta entonces Until then ¡Qué disfrutéis el verano! - Enjoy the summer! Sea salt versus table salt
Babies can 'hear' emotion at three months
Babies can respond to emotions in a human voice at just three months Sea salt is the in thing with foodies these days but in fact old – earlier than previously thought – a recent study has found. it's not all that different from plain old table salt. Researchers at King's made by toys or running more sensitive than The main difference between the two types of salt is the way they are harvested and processed. Table salt is mined from underground deposits and is highly processed to remove trace minerals and give it its fine, uniform
texture. It usually has an anti-caking agent added, to prevent clumping, and some brands have added iodine.
cooked food - though they may become lost when it is used in cooking. So sea salt gives a crunchier texture and a bolder flavour, while table salt is good for cooking dishes where the salt is not meant to be a stand-out ingredient. Health-wise, sea salt is as healthy as table salt, though often marketed as a better choice.
The more expensive sea salt is produced by the evaporation of sea water. It is generally less refined and so often contains trace amounts of minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. It may also contain trace amounts of iodine, but shouldn't be relied upon as a dietary source of this essential nutrient. Its minimal processing gives sea salt its characteristic rough or granular texture. It comes in different grades of coarseness but this has no effect on its nutritional value.
Both types of salt are composed of two minerals, sodium and chloride in similar amounts, by weight. For good health, adults are supposed to eat no more than 6g of salt a day. Too much salt in our diet is linked to an increased risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease, all major killers.
Culinary-wise, sea salt’s subtly unique taste comes only from the deposits left behind from its natural state, which are not processed away like they might be with table salt. These deposits enhance the flavour of the salt when eaten raw – in salads or on
Switching to sea salt is unlikely to lower the risk, because it's the sodium in salt which is thought to be behind these conditions. So it’s up to the consumer to decide if he/she prefers sea salt’s taste over that of the traditional table variety.

College London and University College London used functional magneticresonance imaging (fMRI) to record how 21 sleeping babies responded to tapes of "emotional sounds". Another part of the brain involved in processing emotion in adults, responded more to sad sounds, as opposed to happy or neutral ones. The researchers said the findings suggest that the regions of babies' brains which process sound are
previously thought. The researchers also said their findings fit in with past research which suggested that babies are able to extract subtle information from human speech. They said newborns prefer to listen to their mother’s voice while young infants can also differentiate between the voices of men and women, children and adults. The researchers hope the study will allow them to compare what happens in autistic and non-autistic brains.

Graham P. Backdoor Tax, A warning! I am writing with regard to the recent promotion in Europe of unsold properties in Spain by the Spanish government. I was extremely annoyed when I read about this promotion........ I will relate my story about buying what was then a reasonably priced purchase. In 2009 I found an old cortijo which someone had gutted, built on a large extension, but with no roof and no mains electricity. It had permission to reform to a 220 m2 property but was totally unliveable in. I agreed a purchase price of €51,000, to include various equipment and materials worth around €3,000. The purchase concluded in September 2009 with no problems. Then the big shock came .... in May 2010 I received a demand from the Hacienda for €500, for underpaid tax as my property had been undervalued!!!! I was incensed at this..... I am a pensioner with small state UK pension and my funds were extremely low having spent a considerable sum on reformimg works to the cortijo. So with great reluctance I paid this money through my solicitor to get them off my
Brian Jukes I would like to draw your readers attention to the practice by Bancaja bank who, on the 27th April
by email back. Then would you believe, two weeks later I received yet another demand for €4,300.00 this time, again because my property was undervalued and they now valued it at €108,000. This amount was, they said, the difference between what I had paid on purchase, and the further €500! Well I was gobsmacked, just didn't know what to do. My dear solicitor, very kindly said, just send us a cheque and we will send it on for you. HOW kind.!They seem to think that we all earn money at the same rate as these thieves. I wrote back indignantly and put them straight! They said to fight it would cost maybe around €23,000so was it worth it? How can the Hacienda revalue when they haven't even SEEN the property? It's beyond me. Yes I know the government needs taxes, so why don't they chase the black economy instead of this iniquitous back door tax on property purchasers? I did a lot of searching on the internet and eventually found a company of asesores that supposedly specialised in appealing these iniquitous demands and with very
reasonable charges, with a percentage of their fee refunded if their appeal was unsuccessful. So I went with them. I had to give them power of attorney, another €80 Euros, then they made the appeal. In May this year the Hacienda informed the company that the appeal had been unsuccessful saying that "they were now unwilling to accept any appeals"! So I wrote back to the asesores and said well look, I just do not have this money what am I supposed to do? I budgeted very carefully when I purchased the cortijo and I don't have this money to pay them. I am still awaiting the reply from Hacienda. So this is a salutary warning to ANYONE contemplating buying a CHEAP property in Spain. Watch out for the sting in the tail where they DOUBLE the value of the property on paper so that they can fleece you AFTER the purchase. I am sure that the government promotion to Europe will forget to mention this seedy tax. A very aggrieved purchaser.

e Milky Way All the stars in the Universe are not just randomly scattered about in space but are grouped together into huge structures called Galaxies.
E
ach Galaxy contains millions if not billions of stars and they are truly huge in size stretching hundreds of thousands of light years across.
T
he Sun and all the planets in our solar system live in one such galaxy which we call the Milky Way. Our galaxy is shaped a bit like two fried eggs placed back to back with a central lump in the middle where the yolks would be and gradually thins out in spiral arms towards the edges of ‘the whites’. It is in one of these spiral arms – about threequarters of the way out from the centre or 30,000 light years – where we live.

he Milky Way is over 100,000 light years across and an average of 1000 light years thick it is estimated to contain between 200 and 400 billion other stars with at least 50 billion planets. To give you a better idea of the scale of the Milky Way, if our Solar System from the Sun out to Pluto was the size of a 2 cent piece (about an inch) then the Milky Way would be the size of Spain.
O
ur Galaxy is only one of a group of around 200 billion other Galaxies which make up the observable universe known as the ‘local group’. The next closest Galaxy to ours is the Andromeda Galaxy which is 2 ½ million light years away from us. Under ideal conditions the Andromeda Galaxy can be seen with the naked eye as a small smudge of light in the constellation of Andromeda and is the most distant object that can be seen without a telescope.
T
he Andromeda Galaxy is racing toward us at 100 miles per second and will eventually collide with our Galaxy in about 4.5 billion years, so no need to worry about it just yet then! Using huge telescopes and especially the Hubble Space Telescope astronomers have discovered many examples of Galaxies colliding with each other. The truth is though that because the individual stars within a Galaxy are so far apart then Galaxies could collide without any stars actually hitting one other, they would simply pass each other by.
T
he Galaxy is slowly spinning around its centre; it takes about 230 million years to make one revolution. The oldest known stars that have been found are over 13 billion years old; our Sun is about 6 billion years old.
I
t is at this time of year that our Galaxy can be best seen, away from street lights it looks like a faint band of light stretching right across the sky from horizon to horizon, and it is because of this ‘milky white’ appearance that it gets its name. The centre of the Galaxy is in the constellation of Sagittarius where it appears brightest, the rest of the view of the Milky Way we are looking out toward the spiral arms so it appears to sweep right across the whole of the night sky. It is the fact that because the Milky Way divides the sky into two separate halves tells us that we are located somewhere near the centre of the plane of one of the spiral arms. But there are dark areas within the band of light that are caused by the light from the stars being obscured by dark clouds of gases or nebulae. It is this dark matter that eventually condenses to make new stars.
S
o if you live in a very dark location away from any light pollution go outside and after giving your eyes about 15 minutes to become dark adapted lie back and admire the beauty of our Milky Way stretching across the sky and ponder the thought, are any of our neighbours looking back at you?

DVLA order man to remove plate A motorist who bought the cheeky number plate 'BO11 LUX' for his new car has been ordered by the DVLA to remove it - even though he bought it from their website. Alan Clarke, 49, from Chesterfield, bought the plate for £399 from the official site to put on his new black Range Rover and says it left family, friends and other motorists in stitches when they spotted it.
Lorenzo closes the gap after Mugello win Lorenzo, Yamaha's reigning world champion, took on and beat two factory Hondas, having spent the first half of the race fighting Stoner's team-mate Andrea Dovizioso for second. That looked like the maximum Lorenzo could achieve – with Stoner a 'safe' two-seconds clear – but Lorenzo suddenly began taking chunks out of the Australian's lead just after the halfway stage. Lorenzo then dived inside Stoner through the middle of a right-left turn with six laps to go and went on to win by 0.997sec. And it wasn't Stoner in second, but delighted home star Dovizioso, who passed the world championship leader at the start of the last lap. A disappointed Stoner, who attributed his loss of speed to his tyres overheating, is now a reduced 19 points in front
of Lorenzo after eight of 18 rounds. Fourth place went to Lorenzo's team-
mate and last weekend's Assen winner Ben Spies, who overtook San Carlo Honda Gresini's Marco
Simoncelli on the final lap. Simoncelli had been a podium contender during the first half of the race, but dropped away in the
second. Valentino Rossi began his
first home race as a Ducati rider from just twelfth on the grid after struggling to make the new Desmosedici GP11.1 work as he would like around a circuit he was unbeaten at from 2002-2008. Rossi, who broke his leg in practice for last year's race, worked his way steadily forwards to finish in a lonely sixth place, 17 seconds behind Simoncelli. The Doctor was the top Ducati rider, with team-mate Nicky Hayden finishing the first lap in sixth, but after running through the gravel at turn one and returned to the track
16th and last. The American recovered to tenth in a race that saw just one rider, rookie Cal Crutchlow, fail to finish. Crutchlow pitted with front tyre problems, for the second race in a row. Simoncelli/Pedrosa
Dani Pedrosa made clear his feeling towards Marco Simoncelli have not mellowed in the weeks since their Le Mans collision,
which left the Spaniard with a broken collarbone. Refusing the Italian’s proffered handshake and speaking during Thursday’s press conference at Mugello, the venue for Pedrosa's return to MotoGP action, the Spaniard said: "If someone is still doubting [that Simoncelli is dangerous] that is unbelievable. It is quite clear what he is showing on the track. "In Estoril he was laughing about maybe someone will arrest him. Maybe he needs that because I tell you, his head has nothing but hair!”

Jenson Button was supposed to thrill fans behind the wheel of a McLaren-Mercedes F1 car at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend – but a jet-ski injury meant he actually ended up driving a road-going supercar instead. Inarguably Saturday's greatest draw at the event affectionately referred to as the world's greatest motorsport-themed garden party, Button had been due

several weeks, to make a golf day so successful and they pulled out all the stops. Thanks, Lee and Paul. WINNERS 1. AlexStevenson/Uncle Alex 44 points 2. Bruno Schaeffer/S. Marshalsea 41 points 3. Lynn Fisher/Keith Fisher 39 points

The La Cala de Mijas Lions organised a very successful golf day recently at La Cala Resort for the Diabetic Support Group. Over 70 golfers played for the Martin Rhead Memorial Trophy – a pairs competition – with a shotgun start. After the event a buffet lunch was laid on while a local singer Paul Anthony entertained over 100 in the large marquee outside the clubhouse. He gained many new fans during that afternoon. The day raised over 4,500 euros and was greatly helped by a raffle organised by Lions’ members Harry and Sue Rice and an auction of golfing memorabilia run by Lee Dawson and Paul Brabrook. A special thanks goes out to all the generous people who gave prizes to help swell the coffers. Nick Cole of the De Vere Group – the main sponsor - said: “We have enjoyed a wonderful day’s golf followed by a very sociable afternoon over lunch. We have been very pleased to have helped this local charity, The Diabetic Support Group, and hope that founders Frank and Anne Bowles will be able to continue their good work
to climb into the cockpit of team-mate Lewis Hamilton's title-winning 2008 McLaren MP4/23 to take it for a whirl up Goodwood's legendary hill.

Homeshares’ Two Bowl Pairs
Local Cricket The competition had originally been scheduled to celebrate The Royal produces first Wedding but had been postponed because of bad weather centurion! The Sponsors “Homeshares.net” and “Vasari Café” were delighted to be associated with Superbowl who, as always, provided a great venue for this prestigious competition. Sixteen pairs were drawn into four groups, each group played three short games of six ends. The bowling was superb and all four groups were closely contested to find the eventual winners. The semi finals were as follows: Denis Tolfree & Pat Fisher v Chrissie Blackburn & Ronny Lamb. Irene Bhreatnach & Craig Lewis v Russell Borley & Andy Salmon. The eventual winners
and therefore finalists were: Chrissie Blackburn & Ronny Lamb v Russell Borley & Andy Salmon. An exciting final with more excellent bowling, after three ends the score was a close, three - two to Russell’s Team.
The outcome after the sixth end left a four – four draw. With plenty of cheering from the spectators an extra end was played, Chrissie drew a superb bowl touching the jack and sitting just behind it. This looked like it was
going to be very difficult to beat. With a superb firing shot Andy cleared the bowl to leave it wide open for the skips. With two close draw bowls from Ronny his pair became the eventual winners. A lovely afternoon’s bowling with superb was finished up with a BBQ. After the winners and runners up were presented with their cash prizes, a surprise was announced. Each player received a gift voucher for a meal for two in exchange for their completed score cards! Many thanks to the Sponsors, and all the entrants. Novak Djokovic beats Rafael Nadal in final Serbia's Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title and proved himself the best player in the world with a stunning win over Rafael Nadal. Djokovic came through 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3 to end Nadal's reign as Wimbledon champion,
before overtaking the Spaniard as world number one on Monday. It was his 50th win in 51 matches and Djokovic has now beaten Nadal in five finals this year. He becomes the first Serbian man to win Wimbledon, his third
Grand Slam title after two Australian Open victories. Djokovic had done enough before Sunday's final to guarantee
himself the top ranking on Monday no matter what the result. His Wimbledon win was his first grass-court title.
XI Junior Golf Championship The XI Junior Championship was held last week at La Cala Resort. The competition was open to all players aged 21 and under, the main medal and the stableford competitions being played over Campo America. For the younger players, a separate stableford competition was held over the resort’s executive par 3 course. All participants received amongst other gifts, an 18 hole green fee voucher and a voucher for the par 3 course. The round was followed by the prize giving at the clubhouse, where La Cala Resort thanked the David Leadbetter Academy,(the only one here in Spain) and especially the director Laurence Brotheridge, for their continued support and cooperation in organising the event year
after year. They also provided a great selection of prizes for not only the winners, but also for the rest of the participants. The scratch category, played off the white tees, was won by Michael Eyre
with a brilliant level par gross score of 72. Born in 1992, Michael currently lives in Alhaurín El Grande and has been playing golf for 6 years, taking up the game after caddying for his
father. He currently has a handicap of 1.8 and hopes to play at an international level in the future before turning professional. Upon winning, Michael gave a short speech: “Thank you to all the
participants and to La Cala Resort for such great organisation, although I haven’t played at La Cala Golf many times, I really enjoyed the course and the day overall, and I will
definitely be making a return visit in the future.” The handicap category was won with a net 71 by Gonzalo García Parada playing off a handicap of 11 whilst Jake Burton (handicap 27) triumphed in the boys stableford category with 42 points. Maria Luna Contreras took first prize in the girls stableford category with 32 points playing off handicap 23. The 12 hole stableford competition was won by Alejandro Bañasco Guillen who scored 28 points off a handicap of 32. Overall, a great day was had by all and judging by the great results in the scratch category, the future of golf is definitely secure.
This was the last in-house game of the season before the final game against Combined Colleges (17th July) and what a game it was! Team A skipper Phil Nuttall won the toss and elected to bat...and what a decision that turned out to be. Openers Gavin Flaxman and Tom Tobin set out very cautiously and after five overs there were only 15 runs on the board. However, despite the accurate bowling from Team B, teetotaller and insomniac Tom Tobin decided to take the attack apart ably supported by Gavin(29). Tom’s 118 not out consisted of 15 boundaries including three huge sixes. The other batsmen had only a few overs left to prove themselves but Phil Nuttall made a quickfire 23 not out and the other memorable performance was Nick Helme's ‘duck’ which made an interesting change from his usual disputed run outs. The pick of Team B was Imthyas 1/35, Rayeez 1/32, Mick Button 0/32. New ‘boy’ Morly Morland made an impressive acrobatic performance behind the stumps. After lunch it was Team B’s skipper Tony Crooks turn to prove what they could do in reply. Tony and Rayeez opened up and looked on fire in the opening overs and were on 27 after only four overs. Then disaster struck, due to communication failure Rayeez(16) was run out and then the rot set in.

Morly, Paul & Imthy fell very cheaply, and it was only Jerry(23) and Deryck's career bests(11) that were able to offer any resistance after skipper Tony’s(23) departure. Pick of the bowling was Gavin 3/6,Deen 2/8 and young Alberto Nuttall three overs 1/7... better figures than his father! Once again a great day’s cricket, four new faces and twenty-two satisfied cricketers! Off the field highlights were Mrs Watson's super tortilla and Deen's incredible Sri Lankan spicey potato and meat cakes. Next Sunday at the Cartama Oval – Fuengirola v Combined Colleges – THE FINAL. Should have gone to Specsavers Equatorial Guinea defender Bruna is shown inexplicably catching the ball as it rebounded off the post against Australia, before turning around, taking a couple of steps and dropping it by her goalkeeper. Everyone saw it but referee Gyoengyi Gaal, (even though replays showed her looking directly at the incident) who allowed play to carry on. Australia went on to win 3-2 to knock out the African nation at the Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Mark Cavendish is penalised 10 points after stage three for clashing with stage winner Thor Hushovd in the intermediate sprint. Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas survived the stage one carnage to come home sixth and claim the white jersey, for the best young rider, in the Tour de France. The Welshman showed a great turn of speed on the final climb at Mont des Alouettes to seal an impressive finish and ensure he pulled on the prestigious jersey for the second year in succession. Thomas finished six seconds behind a dominant Philippe Gilbert (Omega PharmaLotto) after the Belgian timed his attack to perfection on the fourth category climb, distancing Cadel Evans (BMC) to the tune of three seconds on the line. Stage Two TeamSky had a great ride in the Team time trial finishing in a magnificent third place. The spoils went to Team Garmin-Cervelo
The four coveted jerseys on show at the start of stage 3
who won the 23km team time trial to claim their first Tour de France stage win and put Norway's Thor Hushovd in the leader's yellow jersey. Millar is second overall, on the same time as team-mate Hushovd, while Cadel Evans of BMC lies one second behind. Team Sky's Thomas moved up to fourth overall, four seconds off the pace. Team Garmin-Cervelo
recorded a time of 24 minutes, 48 seconds to win the stage by four seconds from BMC Racing and Team Sky. Stage Three Britain's Mark Cavendish suffered a blow to his hopes of winning the Tour de France's green jersey as American Tyler Farrar won the third stage. Farrar sprinted home, giving America its first Tour win on
Independence Day. Cavendish was stripped of the 10 points he won in the intermediate sprint for a clash with Thor Hushovd and then complained about being impeded on the final corner as he finished fifth. But Cavendish, who was aiming for his 16th stage victory in the Tour, suffered a double blow as not only did he lose 10 points, but also suffered at the final corner at the hands of second-placed Feillu from France and Spain's Jose Joaquin Rojas, who came third. At the end of the day though Britain had three men in the top ten overall classification, Miller in 2nd Thomas in 4th (and still in the white jersey) and Wiggins in 10th. Edvald Boasson Hagen is in 6th place making it three for TeamSky in the top ten.

Heroes welcome as Djokovic returns to Belgrade England’s Jessica Clarke
Women’s World Cup Germany 2011 England coach Hope Powell is hoping the 2-1 win against New Zealand will lift the pressure on her players against Group B leaders Japan. A draw or even a narrow defeat in Augsburg on Tuesday will be enough for England to reach the World Cup quarter-finals as group runners-up. "The fact we have now got our first victory will hopefully allow us to relax a little bit more" said Powell. England will play hosts Germany or France in the Quarter Finals next Saturday. A victory at the Augsburg Stadium would see England overtake Japan, described as the "Barcelona of women's football" as group leaders. And Powell is expecting a difficult match against Norio Sasaki's team, fourth in Fifa's world rankings, who are already guaranteed a place in the last eight after beating New Zealand 2-1 before demolishing Mexico 4-0.
Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic has received a rapturous welcome on his return to Belgrade, where tens of thousands of tennis fans greeted him. The 24-year-old travelled by open-top bus from the airport to the Serbian parliament square, where he held up a replica Wimbledon trophy and dedicated his win to all the supporters who had queued for hours to catch a glimpse of the champion.
FOOTBALL
England foiled again by Germany England have been knocked out of the Under17 World Cup by Germany, despite a late fightback in Mexico. John Peacock's side went 3-0 down early in the second half of their quarter-final at Estadio Morelos on Monday. However, a Sam Magri penalty and Hallam Hope goal put them back in the contest, with six minutes remaining. But England could not find an equaliser and, as with Fabio Capello's senior side in South Africa last year, it was Germany who advanced at their expense.
