The “right time” - National news
Deputy PM steps down to concentrate on election Deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba resigned last Friday to concentrate on running as the Socialist Party candidate in next March's general election. He had been under pressure to do so from the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, ever since he won his party's primary in June and had said he would step down “when the time was right”. Last Friday, he said the time had arrived. He was confirmed
as the party's candidate on Saturday. Despite being one of this government's most respected members for his success in weakening the Basque terrorist group ETA, the polls show that he is still likely to lose to opposition leader Mariano Rajoy.

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Bonkers!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Sometimes I truly wonder about people in so called high places and what their motives for doing things can possibly be. We live near the river and the local council a number of years ago decided that they were going to build a huge bank all along the side of it. This caused problems because a) when we get torrential rain in the winter the river had a very wide area prior to this so that, even though it used to be about a foor deep and going like a train, it was fairly innocuous as long as you were careful and b) we are on a road that ends at the river and if the hill became impassable (it has done so three times in the 15 years we’ve been here, that was our other way out. Then they decided they were going to flatten the bottom of it about three years ago with a huge machine that destroyed all the wildlife down there including turtles, frogs and all the rest of it. now we’ve got the flippin’ great machine (and trucks that don’t give a damn if people on horses are coming down the lanes) back again, this time digging a hugely deep (so deep it’s dangerous) trench which I assume they think the water will go down next year – this time again we have lost all the turtles etc., that had only just come back this year. And if they think they can tell a river where it’s going to go, well doh! – I don’t think so – Mother nature is far more powerful and will send her rivers where she wants them to go. So all this money is being wasted on trying to reroute a river while they can’t fix a pipe for town water to pretty much the same area (see page 13).

World's first double-leg transplant
Continued from FRONT PAGE
Deputy PM steps down to concentrate on election The Socialist party paid heavily in May's local and regional elections for the unpopular austerity measures Sr Zapatero was forced to take in May last year to cut the budget deficit.
Spanish surgeons have performed the world's first double-leg transplant on a man whose legs were amputated above the knee after an accident, the health authority for the eastern region of Valencia announced on Tuesday. They operated through the night on the man, who had faced life in a wheelchair because prosthetic limbs were unsuitable. Neither donors nor the patient were identified but the health authority promised to give further details later, depending on his condition. The doctor in charge of the operation, Pedro Cavadas (pictured in the middle), said he would
need at least 48 hours before being able to provide more information. Cavadas has made several ground-breaking organ transplants. In October 2008, he carried out the first double arm transplant in Spain and the second in the world, and in August 2009 he performed Spain's first face transplant. Health Minister Leire Pajin, who authorised the transplant
last November, phoned Cavadas to congratulate him on the "success" of the latest operation. She said the surgery "brings hope to other patients who have suffered amputations," and also praised the "generosity" of the donor's family who had helped "make our country an example of solidarity in the world." The director of the National Transplant Organisation, Rafael Matesanz, confirmed the
operation was a world first. Spain has become a world leader in organ donation since it set up a network of transplant coordinators in 1989 at all hospitals to closely monitor emergency wards and identify potential donors. When they learn of a death, they tactfully talk to the grieving families to get permission to use the organs to help save the lives of others.

Sr Rubalcaba has come out heavily in favour of supporting mortgage relief for unemployed borrowers and has lashed out at bankers – moves aimed at winning back traditional Socialist voters who abstained, cast blank ballots, or defected to smaller parties in May. But the opinion polls indicate that the best he can do is stop the PP from getting an absolute majority in the general election. On Monday, Sr Zapatero appointed the secretary of state for the interior, Antonio Camacho, to take over the interior ministry, while finance minister and 2nd deputy PM Elena Salgado will become deputy PM, with Manuel Chavez moving up a notch to become 2nd deputy PM. He was the 3rd deputy PM in charge of liaison with the regional governments. Public works minister José Blanco takes over from Sr Rubalcaba as party spokesman.

PM urges EU to solve Greece's problems In an effort to calm the financial markets, Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero on Tuesday urged "all the countries in the euro zone to assume their responsibilities" to find a rapid solution to Greece's solvency problems by giving the green light to the second rescue operation without the participation of the banks. The PM asked “the most powerful countries” like Germany to make good their commitment not to endanger the stability of the euro. Sr Zapatero pointed out that Spain had played its part in the rescues of Greece, Portugal and Ireland and taken measures to reduce the deficit and implement structural reforms. He was speaking after a meeting with EU president Herman Van Rompuy.
Earlier on Tuesday, Spain's risk premium had risen to 380 points, the highest ever since the euro came into existence as the debt crisis in the single-currency bloc extended its tentacles to Italy, sending shock waves through the singlecurrency system. By Tuesday afternoon, the premium had dropped to 330 after the European Central Bank started buying up bonds from several EU countries.
European shares had fallen further earlier on Tuesday after concerns that the debt crisis in the eurozone may spread to Italy and
Spain. On Monday, eurozone finance ministers said they were ready to pass new measures to stop the crisis
spreading. The euro was also lower, falling in early Tuesday trading to a fourmonth low against the dollar at $1.3958.

Moroccans to vote in local elections
New Road deaths link to 120 kph road info
Foreign minister Trinidad Jimenez has said that a change in the new Moroccan constitution, which will allow foreigners to vote there in local elections, will lead to a reciprocal agreement between the two countries allowing Moroccans to vote here. More than 500,000 Moroccans currently live legally in Spain.
Ceuta and Melilla 'worried' Spokesmen for the two Spanish enclaves in Morocco, which enjoy regional government status, expressed concern about Moroccans being able to vote in Spain's municipal elections. In both Ceuta and Melilla, only a minority of the population is of pure Spanish descent with
Moroccans being the largest foreign community. The Spanish government has pointed out that both regions enjoy a special legal status and are considered regions not municipalities. Any agreement between Spain and Morocco would only apply to municipal elections.

He said this was putting extreme pressure on local services, especially the schools, and called for the busing of students to nearby towns which have much lower numbers of immigrants. He also called for a maximum quota for immigrants in each town based on available school places, housing and health services.

Traffic Authority director Pere Navarro said last week that he was “worried” by the 15 road deaths that occurred on Sunday, July 3rd, following the return to the old 120 kph speed limit on July 1st. He said it was the highest number of road deaths on one day so far this year. Sr Navarro said figures for the period July 1st to Sunday, July 10th, showed a 21 per cent rise over the same period last year. He warned motorists that a return to the 120 kph speed limit did not mean they could go back to speeding. He also regretted that motorcyclist

Only one day wait for mobiles The Telecommunications Marketing Commission has approved a measure by which mobile phone companies will have cut the time users have to wait
for their new phones, to one working day instead of the average four days wait now. The new measure will come into force before June next year.
Unlike the old number, it will cost the same as a national call. Last year, more than 2.3 million motorists called the 900 number, the majority of whom (84 per cent) wanted information about the state of the traffic in their areas.

Barclays bidding for lottery Barclays, Lazard and Goldman Sachs head the list of 17 banks which are believed to have pitched for the lucrative mandate to float 30pc of Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, owner of the famous "El Gordo" (the fat one), in a move which will create Europe's largest gaming company. Barclays chief executive Bob Diamond is believed to have discussed the issue with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero at the end of May. Last year El Gordo paid out €2.3 billion.
A priceless illuminated manuscript has vanished from the cathedral of Santiago MADRID de Compostela, apparently stolen in what the police have described as one of 10 per cent below poverty line New figures show that almost 10 million people (over 20 per cent the most important robberies of Spanish historical and artistic heritage. The disappearance of the Codex Calixtinus from a safe in the cathedral's archive was discovered early last week but only made public on Thursday. The keys to the safe were still in the lock when the discovery was made, ruling out the possibility that the document had been forcibly removed. Only three or four people had access to the safe, police said. They have been going through hundreds of hours of security camera recordings looking for clues and have combed
the area in the hope of finding any genetic material left behind. The Codex Calixtinus comprises five books and two appendices and was compiled in the 12th century as a guidebook for medieval pilgrims following the Way of Saint James. The stolen codex is the oldest copy of the manuscript and is unsaleable on the open market, which is why police believe the robbery was commissioned. This
edition of the Codex Calixtinus is thought to date from around 1150. Its purpose was largely practical – to collect advice of use to pilgrims heading to the shrine there. It also included sermons and homilies to St James. The Codex is only brought out on special occasions, such as last year's visit of Pope Benedict, when it is closely guarded. Medievalist scholar Juan Manuel Díaz de Bustamante said: "This piece is irreplaceable and
priceless, it is not the first Codex Calixtinus, but it is the oldest and best conserved one." Experts are worried because a change in light and humidity conditions, or inadequate handling could alter the richly coloured illustrations and cause the pages to come loose. One said he hoped the person “who now has the book is aware of the priceless value of this codex, because then we can be sure that it won't be mistreated".

Cáritas said that poverty will continue to grow because of "insufficient or soon-to-run-out unemployment payments." MADRID

Russia observed a day of mourning on Tuesday after as many as 110 people died when an overloaded tourist boat sank on the Volga on Sunday. Around 80 people were rescued on the wide section of the river in Tatarstan, 450 miles east of Moscow, and some 50 bodies have been found. Canada boycotts UN arms talks Canada is withdrawing from a UN nuclear disarmament conference in protest at North Korea's presidency of the body. In Ottawa on Monday foreign minister John Baird said it was "absurd" that North Korea had taken the rotating presidency as it was “simply not a credible chair of a disarmament
body”. He added, “The regime is a major proliferator of nuclear weapons and its noncompliance with its disarmament obligations goes against the fundamental principles of this committee. This undermines the integrity of both the disarmament framework and the UN.
Canada will not be party to that." Under the 32-yearold UN Conference on Disarmament's rules, the presiding country holds that position for four weeks before it rotates to another country. Canada will resume its role on the 65member body on August 19th, when North Korea's turn as president ends. In
May a UN report said North Korea employed a number of "masking techniques" to export weapons to Iran, Syria and Burma in violation of a UN ban. The Conference on Disarmament is the UN's sole forum for negotiating multilateral arms control and non-proliferation treaties.
Relaxation of one-child policy urged China's richest and most populous (104m) province, Guangdong, has asked the central government to relax the law that restricts most families to one child. It

commission, told reporters: "The increase in population is still affecting social and economic development, but in the long-term, ageing will also be a problem." He
added that Guangdong would not encourage couples to have a second child, but would permit some to do so under an experimental scheme.

'Assad no longer FACTORY Offer legitimate' This week only! US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Monday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has "lost legitimacy". Speaking after a crowd attacked the US embassy in Damascus, she said Mr Bashar was "not indispensable". State department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said a Syrian diplomat would be summoned over the attack on the embassy, and that compensation for the damage would be demanded. Also on Monday, pro-Assad demonstrators assaulted the French embassy, breaking windows and replacing the
French flag with the Syrian national flag. French ambassador Eric Chevallier said the incident had lasted more than three hours, and that the protesters had used a battering ram to try enter the building.Three embassy staff were hurt in the incident. The attacks came after the US and French envoys visited the troubled city of Hama last week, drawing sharp criticism from Syrian media. Progovernment demonstrators had been taking part in protests outside both
embassies for two days. In Washington, Mrs Clinton demanded that the Syrians "meet their international responsibilities immediately to protect all diplomats and the property of all countries." She added: "Our goal is to see that the will of the Syrian people for a democratic transformation occurs." Human rights groups say at least 1,400 civilians and 350 security force personnel have been killed since anti-government demonstrations across Syria began in mid-March.
President's half-brother 'assassinated' Ahmad Wali Karzai, the younger half-brother of the Afghan president and leader of the Kandahar Provincial Council, has been shot dead, officials said on Tuesday. Initial reports suggest he was shot by his bodyguard in
his house in Kandahar. He was a staunch ally of US and allied forces in Afghanistan, to the extent that they turned a blind eye to accusations he was involved in drug trafficking. International forces in Afghanistan have
expressed shock at the killing. Ahmad Wali Karzai had survived attempts on his life before, most recently in a rocket and machine gun attack in 2009 as his convoy was travelling towards Kabul.

Have-a-go heroine 2 weeks free car hire awarded for bravery *
Last February in aptly named Gold Street, Northampton six men wielding sledgehammers tried to break into a jeweller’s shop. And in the crime-strewn UK of late, not really news in itself. But they hadn't banked on have-a-go pensioner Ann Timson who whacked them repeatedly with her black shopping bag. The security shutters had been activated by staff but Mrs Timson was captured on film by freelance cameraman, Ben Jacobson, who had been working nearby filming an NHS documentary. His footage shows her running
after the robbers, two of them falling to the ground as they tried to flee the scene on scooters. As they tried to pick up the dropped jewellery from the ground, Mrs Timmins once again laid into them with her bag. Owner of the Michael Jones Jewellery Store, Luke Allebone said that what she did was very courageous. He said they were six very dangerous men and she just made a beeline for them. Mrs Timson said that she
realised that she had put herself in danger but that, given a similar set of circumstances, she'd probably do the same again. She added that her black shopping bag was now having a rest to get over its bruisers – courage and humour! She received the People's Choice Award from the Police Federation last Thursday for her bravery, and for once somebody who deserves a medal actually got one!

Grant gets his own back Actor Hugh Grant went on CNN last week and, during an interview was asked about the UK phone hacking scandal. He said that nothing will actually happen, a bit of more interesting news will come along and the whole thing will be buried. So he and a few like-minded individuals are keeping up the pressure to make sure that those responsible are brought to justice, although he added that he was fully expecting reprisals from the British press for so-doing. “They’ll dig up more dirt on us – and it’s never really difficult especially with me,” said Grant. However, our Mr Grant
has carried out a little covert operation himself to get his own back, having been a victim himself in the past. “It began with just a personal grievance because I was a victim of phone hacking and then I had this extraordinary piece of luck,” Grant said, when he ran into an ex-features’ editor from The News of the World. “He started boasting about hacking me, hacking everyone, all the dirty tricks of The News of the World, their relationship with the Metropolitan Police, and their relationship with the prime minister. I thought it was all both fascinating and utterly repulsive. So subsequently I went back to

see him. He now runs a pub in Dover, and I dropped in for a pint and a chat and bugged him … I was wearing a wire and got him talking about all this stuff again. That was sort of the beginning of my obsession with this and my outrage because it's one thing for there to be one very bad newspaper in the country, but then you start to realize it's not one but all our tabloids who've been shockingly out of control for a long time,”Grant said, adding, “When you realize how much collusion there's been from the police and how much collusion there's been from our lawmakers, from our government who need these tabloids, especially the Murdoch press to get elected. You start to think I'm not proud of my country any more. This is not the democracy I thought I was proud of.” And of course, we’re all sure that it’s not only The News Of The World that have been guilty of this.... let’s all just watch to see who else has skeletons they’d rather leave in their cupboards. Fleet Street, or wherever the British papers are now based, must be quaking in their boots waiting for the proverbial knock at the door for “talks” with their investigative journalists.

Victim’s head found Julia Martha Thomas's murderer, her maid, was tried and executed in London some 132 years ago, but her head was never found - until now. A human skull was dug up in the garden of David Attenborough, the natural history expert and television presenter last October by workmen building an extension at his home in Barnes. The site used to have a pub on it that was known to be one of the haunts of the killer of the 55-year-old wealthy widow, 29-year-old Kate Webster who was already a convicted thief and fraudster. At the time, in 1879, the case gripped London
because of its gruesome details and was dubbed “The Barnes Mystery”. It was said that Webster was found guilty of chopping up the body with an axe and boiling the remains. One of the victim’s feet was found on an allotment and a box of flesh was found by the river Thames. It was said at the time that Webster gave the dripping to local children to eat! Using records of the murder, census records and radioactive carbon dating Alison Thompson, the West London Coronor
was able to formally identify the skull as that of Julia Martha Thomas. She recorded a verdict of unlawful death and the cause of death as asphyxiation and head injury. "This is a fascinating case and a good example of how good old-fashioned detective work, historical records and technological advances came together to solve the 'Barnes mystery'," said Richmond borough police commander Chief Superintendent Clive Chalk.
NAO release report too early - MoD
Jailed at last
The Conservative government in the UK is blaming the previous Labour-led administration for a staggering £38 billion shortfall in its defence budget which means reducing spending by 8% over the next four years.
A 29-yer-old man with 69 criminal offences on his record was jailed for a minimum of 20 years last Friday for murdering his girlfriend, 26-year-old mother-of-two, Alison Studd in January this year. John Grimwood of no fixed abode had walked free from court last August after being found not guilty of murdering another woman, Rose Hunt in Ipswich less than six month before committing the crime of which he was found guilty last week. Prosecutor Steven Dyble said that Grimwood lived in a subculture of "alcohol and drug abuse". He added: "His record shows he was almost habitually armed with a knife when in public."
In October last year David Cameron announced that the government was having to scale back plans dramatically in respect of orders for new aircraft carriers. Two had been ordered but there are now new plans to buy cheaper aircraft for one of the carriers and either use the other only for helicopters or mothball it altogether. However, The National Audit Office said last Thursday that it fears “loss of expertise in operating the ships and a risk to value for money” due to the cuts. Chief Operating Officer of the NAO, Michael Whitehouse, said in an email statement: “It will take two years for the department to reach a mature understanding of the consequences of the decisions, consequences which include a decade without an operational carrier and the risks after such a time associated with reconstituting the capability.” The watchdog questioned whether government plans to
achieve 3.4 billion pounds ($5.4 billion) in savings on aircraft carriers over 10 years can be realized without jeopardizing the capability of the armed forces. It said the government’s defense plans aren’t affordable and the military will need more money after 2015. And the response from the Defence Secretary Liam Fox via the department's top civil servant, Ursula Brennan released by her office in London? They said they are “disappointed” that the watchdog published its findings without letting her see the final report.

Most illegally built homes to remain standing
Mayors up in arms about speed limit
The Junta de Andalucia is preparing a new decree which will allow illegal properties built in isolated areas to remain standing, although they will never be declared legal. According to El Pais newspaper, the new decree will apply to properties built more than four years ago, provided they were not constructed in areas of outstanding beauty or in river beds where extra protection orders are in place. The properties can continue to be lived in as long as
certain basic health and safety requirements are met. Under the new decree town halls will be able to issue “a resolution of recognition” but not a first occupancy licence, which means the property will lack certain protection in criminal proceedings, for example, in boundary disputes or in cases of
compulsory purchase. The owners of such properties cannot carry out any building work, other than that strictly necessary for reasons of safety. If the properties are not connected to basic services or are too isolated, the owners will have to pay for supplies. More than
25,000 illegal homes have been counted in the Axarquía and Almanzora valleys alone, and an estimated 89 per cent will be covered by the new legislation. It is estimated that there are between 300,000 and 500,000 illegal properties in Andalucía as a whole.
Stolen babies case makes front page in US The ABC newspaper reported last week that the so-called stolen babies case had made the front page of none other than the prestigious New York Times. The case has been making the headlines in Spain, especially in newspapers in Andalucia where hundreds of cases have been reported. That is probably why, the ABC said, it was written in Seville by Ralph Minder. Minder reports that Attorney General Cándido Conde-Pumpido had announced on June 18th that 849 cases were being examined, adding that 162 already could be classified as criminal proceedings because of evidence pointing to abductions. The statute of limitations on most of the suspected crimes has expired, prompting lawyers to discuss whether a special statute can be adopted. The cases of disappeared infants stretch from 1940 to 1990,
continuing well after Franco’s death in 1975. It is not known whether government officials played any role. Mr. CondePumpido said it was impossible to estimate how many more cases would surface, and suggested for the first time that organised crime “networks” had been involved. He gave no details, saying only that he did not believe that “one single organisation” had masterminded all the abductions. To illustrate the full depth of the tragedy Minder gives details about several cases. He told how one father, Joaquin Sáez Naranjo, had been told his baby son was born dead and was advised that it would be best for him and his wife not to deal with the shock of seeing the body. He returned earlier this year to Seville’s San Fernando cemetery where his son had been buried in a common grave, only to be told by staff members that the remains in that grave
María Luisa Puro Rodríguez, a former tobacco factory worker who claims that her newborn was abducted in 1976 from a Malaga hospital, told Minder that during the Franco regime and in its immediate aftermath, “you simply didn’t challenge what an official told you. We now thankfully live in a society where it is normal to question what we hear,” she said. “I’ve learned this bitter lesson and am now ready to fight all the way to find out what actually happened.”
Marbella mayor Angeles Muñoz and Mijas mayor Angel Nozal (pictured) have demanded an explanation from public works minister José Blanco as to why he reduced the speed limits on the A-7 between their two municipalities from 100 to 80 kph “without warning”. The new speed limit came into effect last Friday. Representatives of the tourism sector and neighbours' associations have joined the two mayors in demanding a reversal of the measure which they
claim will do nothing to increase safety on that stretch of road. The acting president of the Costa del Sol Municipalities Association called the measure a “barbarity” which demonstrated nothing but contempt for the Costa del Sol.

had been moved a decade ago to an unspecified location. Some parents told Minder they had allowed hospitals to handle the burials because their own insurance policies did not cover such costs, while others also said they were too naïve or uneducated to challenge medical workers, despite their suspicions.

17 to be tried for Brit's death A Torrox court has ordered 17 youths aged between 18 and 25 to be tried on charges relating to the death of Stephen Alexander Mallon after a street fight in Cómpeta in June 2009. Five face charges of homicide while the rest are charged with causing injuries and instigating a brawl. Mallon and his family were holidaying in the village and had gone with friends to the La Estrella bar for a drink. Trouble started when a group of local boys objected to the Mallon party talking
to the ex-girlfriend of one of the youths. The bar owner suggested the British group stay inside the bar to avoid a fight but they went outside. In the ensuing melée, Mallon was hit on the head with a bottle, according to police reports, before being pushed off the bar's terrace and falling four metres. He was taken
to Carlos Haya hospital in Malaga in a coma and died 12 days later. The Torrox judge set bail of €100,000 for the five charged with homicide and €10,000 for the others. No date has been set for their trial, which will be held at the Provincial Court in Malaga.

False kidnapper arrested The police have arrested a 60-year-old man accused of obtaining money from the family of a man he said he had kidnapped. The 34year-old unnamed man disappeared in Marbella earlier this year. After reading about the disappearance in the press, the “kidnapper” contacted the man's family saying he
had been taken by an Eastern European gang who were demanding a ransom of €50,000 for his release. He said he would call again but never did. Police said he had used the same trick a year ago in Huelva, managing to get €30,000 out of another family. The family of the Marbella man had reported

Drug arrests almost double
Warning against 'rapist's drug' Malaga coroner José Manuel Burgos has warned that there has been an increase of rape cases involving scopolamine, the so-called date rape drug. He said it was especially common in Puerto Marina, Benalmadena. During a conference on the latest legal and forensic medical practices, Sr Burgos said young girls should be especially alert, saying the drug could be administered in cigarettes, sweets, perfumes and even on paper money. Criminals also use the drug to knock out people before robbing or kidnapping them.
the police almost doubled drug-related arrests last year, up from 1,094 in 2009 to 2,092, as well as increasing their seizures of drugs. local police chief Joaquin rueda said this did not reflect an increase in drug taking in the town but rather more efficiency on the part of the police. he said this accounted for a drop of 7 per cent in phone calls reporting crimes. Confiscation of illegal guns also increased, from 187 in 2009 to 207 last year. ronda
Food for the needy the council has begun distributing food to more than 200 families in three of the town’s poorer areas and will continue to do so for the rest of the summer. Carbon tax divides Australia Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard is facing a fight to the political death over a carbon tax that has divided the nation. Her blueprint to cut emissions by at least 5% of 2000 levels – or 160 million tonnes – within a decade will force 500 of the country's worst polluters to pay AU$23 (£15) for each tonne of carbon dioxide they emit. The scheme has been praised by the environmentalists as being historic but condemned as economic madness by conservatives. Multi-billion dollar compensation packages for businesses and tax cuts for households are
sweeteners that should secure legislative approval – but only just, thanks to crucial support from a handful of independent MPs and the Greens that gives the Labour government the slimmest of parliamentary majorities. Ms Gillard will spend two weeks travelling the country to try to sell the pollution levy to a largely sceptical public. If she fails to convince the people, the fate of her government at the next election seems assured.
The prime minister's message is one of environmental imperative. She warned: “We know that warming is changing our climate causing sea levels to rise, meaning there will be more days of extreme heat, meaning that we are at risk of more bushfires and droughts, meaning that great icons like the Great Barrier Reef are at risk."
leader Tony Abbott insists the tax will wreck the country's coal-dependent economy, drive up the cost of living for families and forcing thousands out of work.
The carbon tax is due to be introduced on 1 July next year, and will then evolve into an emissions’ trading scheme three years later.
Business groups and the powerful mining sector also believe the Gillard plan is flawed and will erode Australia's prosperity, while others cast doubt on the government's predictions that most Australians will be no worse off under the levy.
Australians must now consider the biggest question they have faced in a generation: Are these the actions of a bold leader determined to kick-start a new age of clean energy or the reckless plan of a politician gambling with Australia's future to try to rescue a fragile minority government? Conservative opposition

He said: "It's a tax increase pretending to be an environmental policy. It's just socialism masquerading as environmentalism."
The gulf in opinion seems as wide as Australia itself. Supporters of the carbon scheme believe a country that is one of the world's worst-per-capita emitters of greenhouse gases may finally be on the road to environmental salvation.

Dr Jonathan King, a historian and member of the Greens, said the tax will be seen as an environmental milestone by future generations: "They will look back and say: 'Thank God those people in 2011 could see that we were going to suffer if that pollution continued.' It is a turning point in Australian history." But there are some conservationists worried that a 5% cut in emissions reduction by 2020 is not
enough – they were hoping for a far higher target of between 25% and 40%. Others, like Tony Windsor, an independent MP whose support is keeping the Gillard government alive, applaud the carbon tax. He said: "This is about the history of people, most of whom haven't even been born yet. And if I'm sacked from politics because of that, well, I'll remove myself with a smile on my face."

Summer visitors’ EHIC
What a bunch of drips!
Use their health card not your visa card! The British Consulate in Spain have sent out a reminder to all British expats expecting visitors to encourage their guests to bring their EHIC (pictured left). The EHIC or to give it its full title the European Health Insurance Card is a free issue nifty piece of government blue grey plastic that insures against medical emergencies. If things go wrong, just waving the card in front of the appropriate person is enough to ensure proper medical attention free from hassle, worry and cost. The EHIC (card) covers accidents and just about every medical emergency, including pregnancy plus any pre-existing medical conditions the visitors may
For the first time in years there aren’t any water shortages but Coin council still can’t get the water through. We’ve had rain, rain and more rain over the winter months so much so that water had to be let out of the overfull reservoirs but certain areas of La Carreta have been without town water again for over two weeks. The same thing happened a couple of years ago to the same area when they said it was due to a burst pipe. OK, so that happens from time to time but, on that occasion it took them 23 DAYS to fix it. This time they are blaming “Cal in the pipes”. Yes, the area has a lot of cal and the kettles are forever getting furred up but to take over two weeks to fix them is just plain daft. When The News
bring with them that suddenly or unexpectedly take a turn for the worse. The EHIC is essentially a benefit of the European Union and having the good luck of living in the western world. It gives all EU citizens whilst on a temporary visit like a holiday or business trip, free of charge or reduced cost access to all state medical treatment throughout Europe. Not quite everything is covered so for the remainder, the Consulate also suggests taking out at least basic travel insurance to cover the unforeseen extras, like flight delays, theft, leaves on the track and the occasional passing ash cloud. With their (EHIC) card in their pocket, insurance
policy tucked under their arm and their suntan lotion in their beach bag your visitors will be modern, up to date, happy go lucky, welcome travellers with plenty of protection. An EHIC is valid all over the EU, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland and is available from the member
state social security. There maybe special conditions in some areas, remember to check before leaving home. In the UK your visitors can obtain details and apply for or renew an EHIC online at www.ehic.org.uk or by calling +44 (0)845 606 2030 (Written by Pete Woodall of Woody’s, Los Boliches. Call 953 471 877)
phoned the Tecnico people for water at the town hall we were told that they had no idea when the pipes were going to be fixed and that the tanker that is supposed to deliver water to those that have the facility to store it had broken down and “might be fixed on Friday!” The lucky ones with pools are at least being able to keep fairly clean and those that can afford it can buy bottled water. But locals also have horses and animals that need water and there just isn’t any sign of any being forthcoming. While we are aware that the new administration has been left with huge debts, water should be a basic human necessity that should be kept going, no matter what so, come on Coin - FIX IT NOW!

Monarch on Mucky beaches the Rock The ESG picked up the news recently in the Spanish media that stretches of the beach closest to Gibraltar on the East Side are being closed due to higher than acceptable levels of sewage.
This, says the ESG, should ring alarm bells locally. “The ESG urges the public and beach goers in

The number to call is +350 200 70620. We understand that the government is monitoring the situation closely.”

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
An uphill battle
A
lfredo Pérez Rubalcaba resigned as deputy PM and interior minister last Friday to devote himself to winning the next election for the Socialists, even though the polls are heavily against him. Zapatero announced on Monday that he would make do with two deputy PMs instead of three and moved up finance minister Elena Salgado and former Junta de Andalucia premier Manuel Chavez, who is currently the liaison between the central and regional governments. A lot of people have wondered why a PM needs three deputies but that’s just one of the many vagaries of Spanish politics. The former secretary of state for the interior, Antonio Camacho, will take over the interior ministry. The main point in his favour is that he’s keen on wiping the Basque terrorist group ETA off the map, which he’s been helping Rubalcaba to do for the past three years. Zapatero also appointed public works minister Jose Blanco to take over from Rubalacaba as party spokesman so we can look forward to a lot of mud being slung around in the upcoming election campaign.
N
o sooner had Zapatero announced Rubalcaba’s replacements than the political pundits started predicting a November election. Their line of reasoning is that if the PM had really wanted to slug it through till next March he would have appointed a heavyweight to interior rather than let the relatively unknown Camacho take over such an important ministry.
I
n fact, all the political parties have been gearing up for an autumn election for some time now. The political scene is dead from here till September, giving Rubalcaba time to get on with his campaigning in an attempt to make the party’s predicted defeat in the next election less of a trouncing than it would have been if defence minister Carme Chacon had been the candidate. She’s too inexperienced and comes across as too unsure of herself to turn around the party's difficult situation.
U
nfortunately, Rubalcaba does have a couple of dark shadows in his past which the PP will use against him, especially his link to the socalled GAL death squads. These emerged a year after the Socialist government of Felipe Gonzalez came to power in 1982, when killings by ETA were at their height. Made up of members of the security forces and hired assassins, GAL (Anti-terrorist Liberation Groups) was formed to destabilise ETA in its "safe havens" across the border in France and was responsible for 28 murders between 1983 and 1987. There probably wouldn’t have been such an outcry when GAL’s goings on started to leak out, except that
When rebellions are good some of those killed had nothing to do with ETA. The scandal started after two senior policemen who were convicted of recruiting hitmen and funding GAL attacks began to reveal details. At first they had refused to name others involved, but after serving four years of their sentences, they started to talk. This led to a judicial inquiry in 1994, and a supreme court trial – the first of many probing the extent of the government's involvement in the death squads. The trial established what had long been suspected – that GAL was financed by secret funds from the interior ministry.
G
onzalez allegedly asked Rubalcaba, who was minister of the prime minister’s office and relationships with congress at the time, to do everything in his power to minimise the tarnishing of the government’s image. Unfortunately, at the time details of corruption involving the brother of Alfonso Guerra, Gonzalez’s right hand man, were beginning to emerge and this, together with the GAL scandal, led the Socialists to defeat in the 1996 election.
T
he other shadow happened the day before the 2004 election on March 14th. The country was still reeling from the March 11th train bombings in Madrid which killed 191 people and injured more than 1,800. Like a lot of people in Spain, the government jumped to the conclusion that ETA was behind the attack, but it turned out to be a group allegedly related to Al Qaeda, although Osama Bin Laden never claimed responsibility. The Socialists, who were tipped to lose the election, then trotted out their anti-Iraq war forces, which spurred a lot of people who usually stay at home on election day, to vote that Sunday. On the Saturday, the “day of reflection” when all campaigning is forbidden, “anti-war” groups demonstrated outside the Partido Popular’s local headquarters in cities across Spain. The government said text messages had been sent out from Madrid to Socialist party activists all over the country to tell them to get the demonstrations going. The man allegedly behind the text messages was Rubalcaba, who refused to allow the police to inspect his mobile phone – alleging it would violate his right to privacy.
R
ubalcaba is a wily old fox who has had plenty of opportunity to hone his skills in a ministry which has not hesitated to resort to dirty tricks to keep its master – the government – happy and/or in power. He'll need all those skills to get the better of Mariano Rajoy, who also had the opportunity to hone his own skills when he was José María Aznar's interior minister. It could turn out to be an interesting election campaign after all.
S
ome call it anarchy while others see it as a Good Samaritan drive to call attention to abuses by the banks that have left home owners devastated. Like many protest movements, this one started out at the grassroots level late last year in Catalonia and has since skyrocketed to other big cities such as Madrid, Valencia and Seville. It works like this: the day a family is going to be evicted from their home because they can no longer keep up with the mortgage payments, a group of citizens, around 100, gather outside the residence waiting for the court bailiffs to arrive. When the time comes, the bailiff reads the eviction notice to the family giving them a certain period to gather their things so that the judicial committee accompanying him can change the locks and close up the place. Then a spokesman for the Platform for those Affected by a Mortgage (PAH) steps up and proceeds to reads out the pertinent clauses contained in international treaties such as the Universal Human Rights Declaration, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and even the Spanish Constitution. The articles refer to the belief that every person has the right to have a home. The duelling documents’ confrontation usually ends when the bailiffs back off and leave. There will be another attempt on another day but that will be for the courts to decide.
S
ince this unusual campaign began, some 50 evictions have been prevented and more are in the pipeline. They are media events and that is what the PAH organisers want: to get lawmakers' attention that something must be done about changing the country’s unfair mortgage laws. In most countries, home foreclosures mean a generally bad credit rating for the mortgage holder. The bank repossesses the home and puts it on the auction block, sometimes even selling it for more than the owed amount. In Spain, foreclosures mean the home must be given up but the outstanding note also has to be paid off. If the person finally settles his debt he will still get nothing in return. In other words, the lender wins, and wins again.
D
ozens of leftist lawmakers have demanded that the government of prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero put a stop to this unfair practice. Zapatero has baulked saying that if the rules are changed now, it could create financial chaos among Spain ’s relatively stable lenders.
A
nother argument is that many people are at fault because they bought homes they knew they couldn’t afford in the first place. However, the blame must be shared by the lenders and real estate agents who used deceitful tactics to rake in hundreds of thousands
of clients by attractive too-good-to-be true deals. Lawmakers are equally to blame because they never had any drive to push through a series of truth-inlending laws, like those in place in the US, in which banks and real estate companies are under obligation to tell you everything about your home loan and cannot make outrageous offers.
S
ince the real estate slip began in 2008, some 300,000 homes have been repossessed leaving many devastated families out on the streets. There isn’t much to be said about the banks, whose global reputation has disintegrated faster than Skylab, except that those institutions that received generous government bailouts are the same ones who refuse to approve mortgages or even lend one euro to a start-up business. What are they doing with all that money?
T
he “obstructions of justice” being carried out by PAH seem to be the only way to make people take notice and begin to rethink their priorities in life. The platform may be using creative ways to call attention and stop, in the short term, home evictions, but unfortunately, the lenders have the law, for now, to back them.
Different party
L
istening to Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba’s acceptance speech and manifesto objectives on Saturday I couldn’t help but think that this man may not be from the same Socialist party as Prime Minister Zapatero. There wasn’t any 180-degree turn around in planned policies but from the looks of it, it may appear that Rubalcaba has something to build on. The now-former deputy prime minister has taken the reins of the party as he prepares for his candidacy for next year’s general elections. The split from Zapatero seems so perfect you could almost hear it snap. Among the proposals he presented is demanding that the banks and other institutions which received government bail-out money set up a special fund to create employment by offering low interest loans to start-up businesses. He also wants improved government transparency, and changes to the electoral laws. This Rubalcaba appears to want to put the pressure on the big bankers and those who want to keep the old ways intact. Zapatero feared touching the bankers because, as he has always admitted, that sector was still strong in Spain while in other countries the financial institutions are on shaky ground. Rubalcaba is a man of action; we saw this over the past four years as he chipped away at the ETA leadership. And now it is time to chip away at the political and economic traditions, which have gotten us all here in the first place.

Inauguration of New Bolo Andaluz Facility at Cazorla, Jaen report and photo by John Carr
Question: What was an Englishman, steeped in the sport of Lawn Bowling, doing attending the inauguration of a bowling complex at Cazorla, bordering the incredibly beautiful nature park located in northern Jaen? Firstly, it was not a Lawn Bowling green, as found in almost every village in England and here liberally scattered along the south eastern coasts of Spain. No, it was a bowling variation called “Bolo Andaluz”, (mountain version), a traditional sport popular in the rural mountainous areas principally of Jaen. Basically, the game consists of hurling a heavy stone bowl at a smaller ball, (“mingo”), placed several metres away, with the object of propelling it as great a distance as possible along an unpaved lane. Points are given according to the distance travelled by the mingo. How did I get involved? Simple : recently I was asked to introduce the newly appointed president of the Andalusian Bowls Federation, (FAB), José Miguel Nieto Ojeda, to the sport of Lawn Bowls, which was as foreign to him as his
speciality, Bolo Andaluz, was to me. José Miguel wanted to learn about Lawn Bowls because it was one of the categories of bowling sports included in the FAB. The other types of bowling are: Ten Pin Bowling, (“Bowling”), Bolo Andaluz and Bolo Palma. For reasons too complicated to explain here, Patanca, probably the nearest “relative” to Lawn Bowls and a natural candidate for inclusion, has its own separate federation. So it was that I invited the president, accompanied by his wife Paqui, on a brief visit to Benavista Bowls club, situated near Estepona, to find out what a Lawn Bowls green looked like and learn the basics of the game. Both showed great interest in the club and the manner in which the game was played. I gave them a brief coaching session, followed by a 3 cornered 2 end game. I must have done a reasonable job
coaching, as José Miguel beat me into second place, in front of a large group of fellow club members! During the visit, the president invited me to attend the upcoming inauguration of the bowling complex at Cazorla, thereby, representing the Andalusian Lawn Bowls community. Having visited the famous nature park recently, I gratefully accepted the invitation. After a scenic drive from Estepona, (including some perplexing battles with my sat. nav.), I arrived at the historic town of Cazorla, on the edge of the park and booked into the very well situated Hotel Sierra de Cazorla. In the evening I sampled some local hospitality in one of the excellent restaurants in the centre of town, hosted by José Miguel, wife Paqui, Pablo Medina Mora and a representative of Andalusian
Ten Pin Bowling, Pablo Ortega Ribera. Waist-line issues reared their heads as plate after plate of delicious tapas appeared before my eyes and mysteriously found their way to my stomach! Next day was the inauguration day at the new facility, located near the village of Iruela, near Cazorla. The president, committee and club members and families were very occupied getting the new club ready for the opening in the evening. I took advantage of the time to briefly revisit the nature park and explore on foot the narrow back streets of Cazorla, (not at all vehicle friendly!). The opening ceremony commenced with brief speeches by the president, José Miguel, and the mayor of Cazorla, Antonio José Rodríguez Viñas. Then followed a match between the Andalusian team and a representative team from
Valencia. The competition was fierce and the bowling both energetic and skilful, but the Andalusian team eventually came through. After presentation of the prizes, a host of local bowlers battled it out until the early hours of the next morning. I have to confess I did not stay to the end, but instead spent a very pleasant evening on the hotel bar rear terrace, looking out on endless scenic kilometers of rolling hills, carpeted with olive groves, supping drinks and
swapping tales with, Pablo Ortega Ribera – not a bad way to end an unforgettable trip. On the return journey back to Malaga, driving through the magnificent countryside, I had time to reflect on the good people I had met at Cazorla, how welcome they had made me, a complete stranger from another culture, who plays a form of bowling completely different from their own. All in all it was a very memorable experience.

Festival of the Virgin del Carmen Flotillas, fishermen, fun and fireworks July the 16th is a festive holiday for many of the fishing communities throughout Málaga. Including Torremolinos, Estepona, Rincon de la Victoria and Fuengirola. This is the celebration of the Virgin del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen and seafaring folk and is an especially important event for Los Boliches, a part of Fuengirola. In Los Boliches just as the evening sets in on Saturday 16th, there is a colourful procession led by the local Marineros (fishermen) carrying a richly decorated figurine of The Virgin del Carmen. Mounted on a large ornate flower-covered
platform, the statue is taken from the church and paraded through the crowd-lined streets of Los Boliches and down to the beach. The high point comes when, with great bravado and cheers, the Marineros walk out into the waves to chest height carrying the statue high on their shoulders. They are greeted by a flotilla of brightly lit crafts and Jábegas (fishing boats) waiting along the shore line. The Virgin gives her blessing to all the boats and fishermen and her protection is assured for another year.
at Los Boliches. In recent years the celebration and blessing is followed by an impressive fireworks show. From the 14th to the 17th is also Los Boliches Feria week and many of the shops and banks in Los Boliches will close early. There is a fun fair in the fair ground and several other activities and concerts, including a “Tapa route” a procession for cyclists, making prearranged calls at bars and cafés – for Tapas of course! For more information ask at the town halls or tourist offices.
This spectacular event attracts 1000s of people and totally fills the beach

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Harry Potter and e Deathly Hallows Part 2 By David Yates, Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint It has long been received wisdom that some Harry Potter movies have been better than others. But as the final ever episode in the series of adventures starring the boy wizard and his friends is released world-wide this week, it is a truth universally acknowledged by every movie critic that the final film is an outstanding testament to the series, and to the craft of film making in Britain. It’s the movie all Potter fans have been waiting for, and it seems that the odds are heavily stacked against
anybody actually being disappointed with this epic tale of good versus evil. As finales go, it will help if the audience comprises Potter fans who can get a grip on characters as they fly in and out of the plot – but then this is hardly the place for newcomers to the world of Potter to start. The stakes could not be higher. The movie starts where Part 1 left off. A nose-less Voldermort, with triumph etched on his face, has stolen the most powerful wand in the world from the tomb of
Harry’s mentor Professor Dumbledore. It will make him invincible, so what hope do our three teenage wizards have as they continue the search for the final four horcruxes that contain parts of the Dark Lord’s soul? There is the hope that springs from love, and from sacrifice, and the final battle matches those of the Lord of The Rings saga, as all those at Hogwarts brace themselves for the final assault from screaming Death Eaters and the Dark Lord’s allies. Weedy Neville Longbottom (Matthew
Lewis) turns into a warrior; Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith) brings the very fabric of Hogwarts to life as an army of stone knights fly down from the ramparts; Mrs Weasley (Julie Walters) hurls herself into furious battle with Bella Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter), and during the course of the movie, we discover the truth about Snape. There are breathtaking set pieces, and moments of huge emotion – so, Potter fans, be ready to be enthralled, and to fight a lump in the throat.

T
here is a standing joke in our household about the amount of times we have recommended a certain film to our friends, having completely forgotten we had mentioned it so many times before. I think it was during some of our many senior moments that seem to come more and more frequently!
success of a film on whether it can make me forget where I am and engage me totally. Which is why I hate films with advert breaks and get annoyed if the doorbell or phone rings whilst I am watching something. Men in Black succeeded on all fronts in helping me to lose myself, keep me interested and make me laugh too.
T
I
he film in question is Men In Black, a 1997 film starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. I am sure many of you have already seen it more than once but at the time of its release, it really grabbed my attention and I think I must have watched it at least ten times since then. The main part of the plot revolves around its main character, an irreverent, athletic New York cop called James Edwards, (brilliantly played by Will Smith), who is recruited by a Secret Government Agency who police the comings and goings of Aliens already living on Planet Earth.
A
fter his almost superhuman efforts to chase down a criminal, (who turns out to be an Alien), cop Edwards is recruited by the agency’s top veteran Agent K, comically portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones. After having his memory wiped by some zapping tool, then given a new ID, super special black glasses and a black suit and matching shoes, (hence the title Men in Black), the newly formed partnership embark on a task of finding a jewel with a secret inside which has been stolen by some intergalactic terrorist. The crazy pair have a few short hours to get the jewel, kill the bad guy and save the world. Well you wouldn’t expect anything less as this was made in America after all. !!
F
or me this film has all the elements that make for a fantastic couple of hours worth of pure escapism. The script was brilliantly written, the cast is great and the story was just something a little different for its time. The comedy within the film works really well and seems to suit Will Smiths’ comedic style perfectly. I always judge the
originally intended to write about some of the funnier and more dramatic scenes to get you interested, but as I looked back at the film, I quickly realised that some of those scenes need the element of surprise to make them work at their best, so in order not to spoil it for those of you who haven’t seen it, I have left out some of the better parts which actually made the film one of my favourites.
I
f you haven’t yet seen it, go and find a copy, the DVD is the best option as there are a number of extras on the disc which give a lot more fun. In particular I love the Music Video which showcases another talent or two from Will Smith.
T
hat boy can really sing, dance and act his little socks off when called for and all credit due to him.
M
en In Black is certainly an entertaining way to spend an evening at home. I thoroughly recommend it.
I
am generally not a fan of sequels as they often appear to be just a crafty way of the film companies trying to milk a little more from the original success. Whilst there are one or two exceptions, Men In Black 2 is certainly not one of them. I found that particular sequel to be one of the most boring, unfunny pieces of cinema I have ever seen. On paper it should have worked as it retained many of the original cast, the original storyline had a few miles left in it and I think it could have worked well, but for me the story line in the sequel was a lazy copy of the first film and it wasn’t even disguised as something new. it left me disinterested after 25 minutes. So I would give that one a miss!

It has been one long emotional roller coaster of a journey but you have finally made it through several eclipses, which for you have been like standing at the edge of a precipice, ready to jump into the unknown yet again. This week, you are being given a break from the wheel of constant change, allowing you to catch your breath and gain more control over your situation. What you have gained is an inner strength to carry you on towards your chosen goal. It is time to invest your in your greatest asset – yourself. Money matters are never far from your mind and you will wish to construct a plan to gain income. On an emotional level you may feel a bit stressed and non-communicative in expressing your true feelings but if you wish to move on to more intimacy within a relationship, now is the perfect time to risk verbalising how you feel. Something could stop you in your tracks but you are ready for it. There is a lot going on for you and even if it feels stressful it is also seriously good. You are in a position of having to make certain decisions that are demanding that you stay rooted to whatever choice you make. The heavens are urging you to become your own authority, to take ownership for your life, your career and your commitments. If you undertake any thing at the moment it is in an all or nothing way - go forth and pursue your wildest dreams. All these eclipses have left their mark on you, placing you in a position of greater influence and personal power. Cancer being ruled by the Moon makes it no surprise that there will be some kind of impact on you and in this case it has given you a certain edge. It raises your position and elevates your radar and ability to drive certain forces forward in your life. Relationships are likely to expand and deepen due to your inner desire for personal growth.
...you don’t have to be a chef!
My husband asked me what I would like for dinner the other evening and, with this ongoing heat all I could think of was ice-cream! I’m sure just eating ice-cream is not good for you – and certainly absolute rubbish for the diet–- but I just wanted something cold. I think we had something totally off the wall like chilli and rice in the end but here’s a quick fix recipe if you’ve run out of ice-cream. And of course, it’s cocktail time for sitting round the pool enjoying a cool drink while reading your copy of The News –- so there’s a recipe for a “Zombie” that comes from an official barman’s guide from 1935 that belonged to my grandfather. I understand this drink is still popular in Hawaii!
5 minute ice-cream Ingredients: ● 500gr package frozen sliced strawberries or other fruit ● 100gr sugar ● 250ml double cream
Directions There is some secret longing that has remained unexpressed, fuelling passions that you have been hiding. No one may know the full degree of what is going on inside of you but the inner rumblings are energizing a private wish and some secret longings. You will be trying to find ways to inwardly nurture whatever craving you have whether it is a love for another or your own personal creative ideas that you wish to be recognised in the world.
1. Combine the frozen fruit and sugar in a food processor or blender. Process until the fruit is roughly chopped. With the processor running, slowly pour in
Not everyone is putting all their cards on the table, perhaps there are things going on behind the scenes so you need to keep your eyes on the prize. Something big in your life could be occurring and is unlikely to be straightforward – as long as you remain calm and do your homework it will not ruffle your feathers too much. Patience is what is needed at this time. You could be inspired to do things differently right now, innovative projects enthuse you.
It's absolutely true – you can make this in literally five minutes once you’ve got everything set up and ready to whizz. Not only is it natural and good for you – it's easy, and your friends will be impressed at how clever you are! The cream can be substituted for yoghurt to make it even more healthy, you cut the fat but not the flavour. and of course talking about flavours, there are many other ways to change this to suit your taste buds.
the double cream until fully incorporated. Serve immediately, or freeze for up to one week.

Your independence and stamina will be rewarded as long as you overcome one of your greatest challenges, that of indecision. It can distract you as you have the ability to see both sides of a situation and can see the benefit of both worlds. If there are secrets being cooked up then you will be the one to take the lid off, with your ability to penetrate to the core of a matter and get to the truth then anything being kept from you will not remain so for long. You of all signs do not take life lightly. The simple things in life mean a lot to you at the moment and you will derive pleasure out of being with family and those that you love. A loving act of simple kindness will touch you that you have not felt before.
SAGITTARIUS You could be feeling that there is something missing in your life but you are unable to put your finger on what it is. It is like feeling hungry but not having a clue what you fancy to eat. You do know it is there and it is knawing away at you for attention, a hunger inside is wishing to be fed. Important contacts may come into your life now that will help give you an objective lens to nd November 22 recognise your inner needs. st December 21
CAPRICORN A piece of your past keeps looming up in front of you and you perhaps want more than anything to free yourself from its influence. It has been holding a certain part of you captive in ways and it makes you feel uncomfortable. A relationship you are in now whether it be an intimate association or a close friend seems to trigger you straight back to the past where the wound December 22nd originally occurred. The intensity you feel inside is enough for you to sort it out January 19th for good.

On one hand you feel like you have got it altogether and that things are moving in a direction that you desire along with creating a future of your own making, yet underneath it all there is an air of insecurity and a feeling of loneliness, no matter how many people are around you. Take the time out to relax this week and find a way to relieve the anxiousness that you feel inside, give yourself a treat, do something for you.
Things are getting there even if it feels that nothing is on track. There is a process of sifting through that which is of value in your life and that which no longer has its place. While this reshuffling is going on it is hard for you to see if all is proceeding to plan. Keep your communication, networking and social doors open, so that you can keep up to date with all that is going on, this will help you keep your finger on the many balls in the air at the moment.
Cocktail – Zombie Ingredients: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
1oz passion fruit juice 1 oz plum or apricot juice Juice of 1 small lime Juice of 1 small orange 1 teaspoon caster sugar 1 dash bitters ½ oz anisette 2 ½ oz rum ½ oz Apricot brandy 2/3 oz Demerara rum (151 proof) 1 oz Jamaica rum 1 oz Puerto Rica Gold Label rum
Cocktail - Commodore Ingredients: ● ● ● ● ● ●
2 oz Bacardi rum 1 egg white 1/2 tsp sugar Dash of lemon juice Dash of grenadine Dash of raspberry syrup or liqueur
The Commodore is a classic cocktail that is rich and delicious. The recipe from The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book calls specifically for Bacardi and it is a nice rum for the drink as it could be called a "fancy" Bacardi Cocktail.

Pottered There were a couple of stunningly bad dresses at the Harry Potter premier in London last Thursday night, but some real goodies too OK, so we all know that, generally speaking Emma Watson could turn up wearing a black bin bag and would still manage to pull it off, but the dress she chose for the last Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows- Part 2, was pretty stunning even for her. The red carpet stretched from Trafalgar Square to Leicester Square in London’s West End and was lined by over 7,000 Potter fans
bidding their farewell to the stars. Most of the stars seemed a little stunned by the sheer number of people who had turned out on a day that had enjoyed sun and then downpours but, of course, the British public came out with brollies in hand and stuck it out. When asked what would be the biggest memory he would be taking with him of the films, Rupert Grinch (red haired Ron Weasley), looking
very smart, simply said: “This! It’s incredible. From Ron, Hermione and Harry...........to J.K. Rowling...................to Prof. Snape.................... to that hat and bag! Noel back and flying high On and off stage public fights between the Gallaghers were par for the course during their Oasis days One half of the band Oasis, their former guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher is returning to music with the announcement that he has written two new albums, but has assured fans that the new songs will have a “familiar” Oasis echo somewhere in there. The first 10 track album is to be released on October 17th from his new band, “Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds”, and was recorded in London and Los Angeles. Shortly after
its release the band will be touring, with the first gig in Gallaghers’ home-town of Dublin. The second album, as yet un-named was recorded in collaboration with psychedelic band Amorphous Androgynous, and is expected to be released some time in 2012. Noel has described this as “far out” and anything but mainstream, saying: "It's the furthest out I've ever been, let's put it that way!"
Oasis was one of the '90s biggest bands but split after the two brothers, Noel and Liam Gallagher had yet another bust-up at a music festival in France, splitting the band in August 2009 when Noel walked away. Their sibling rivalry was legend in the business and among their fans. Liam has since formed his own new band called Beady Eye that released their first album earlier this year.
Our Kate wows Canada Kate Middleton, or the Duchess of Cambridge if you prefer, has wowed the Canadians with her sense of style and her ability to have fun. The new wife of William, heir to the British throne has had the people of Canada falling over themselves to see what she would be wearing next (much like the impact William’s mother had on the world before her) but Kate also gets down and dirty, enjoying every
minute of it by the look on her face, when she gets the chance. Donning a life jacket Kate and William were in opposing Dragon boats for a race in Charlottetown on Dalvey Lake. Not the first time Kate has put her hand to watersports though – she did participate in crewing
at St. Andrews where she met William. On this occasion William won. But for the Canadian women, Kate will be the winner for some while yet to come.
Strictly a boy for Claudia Claudia Winkleman, 39, one of Strictly Come Dancing's presenters who in particular is the front of It Takes Two, has given birth to a baby boy after joking in March on Twitter that it “looked more like a goat on the scan!” Claudia already has two other children Jake aged eight and Matilda aged five with her partner, film

Katona cleared Reality TV star and former Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona, 30,(pictured below)has been put through a battery of drug tests, including hair tests, to prove she is clean from drugs – including cocaine and cannabis – she says she has not taken for over a year. She had previously had a urine test but that measures drugs over a much shorter period. However, all the tests have come back negative according to her spokesman Max Clifford who she turned to after reports that she had
been dumped by her former manager Claire Powell following a six hour drinking session. She strenuously denies that she was dumped saying that it was entirely her decision based on the fact that she was not happy with the way her career was being handled and that she left of her own accord. Kerry added: "I have not taken any drugs in the last year and a half – and if anyone claims otherwise, I will sue without hesitation."

STD strain 'resistant to antibiotics'
New treatment eliminates germs permanently
A new strain of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea has become resistant to antibiotics and could now become a global threat to public health, researchers at the Swedish Reference Laboratory have warned, and called for new drugs to delay the spread of the infection. A spokesman said: “Since antibiotics became the standard treatment for gonorrhoea in the 1940s, this bacterium has shown a remarkable capacity to develop resistance
mechanisms to all drugs introduced to control it.
Association said it was a worrying sign. She said prevention was very important because antibiotics won't always work: “Gonorrhoea can affect people of all ages and everyone should be now focusing on looking after their sexual health."
"While it is still too early to assess if this new strain has become widespread, the history of newly emergent resistance in the bacterium suggests that it may spread rapidly unless new drugs and effective treatment programs are developed." .
Gonorrhoea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world. Some 50% of women

Suicide rates 'linked' to financial crisis An analysis of World Health Organization data on suicide rates in ten countries has shown that the financial crisis "almost certainly" led to an increase in suicides across Europe. US and UK researchers found a rise in suicides among working age people from 2007 to 2009 in nine of the ten nations studied. During this period, there was a rise in
unemployment by a third. The increases varied between 5% and 17% for under 65s after a period of falling suicide rates. A spokesman said: "There was a complete turnaround. Suicides were falling before the recession, then started rising in nearly all European countries studied. Almost certainly these rises are linked to the financial crisis."

infected with gonorrhoea have no symptoms. The same is true of 2-5% of men. When symptomatic, gonorrhoea is characterised by a burning sensation when urinating and can cause discharge from the genitals. If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to serious and irreversible health complications in both women and men.
A new anti-microbial treatment that can make clothing permanently germ-free has been developed by scientists at the University of Georgia. The spray-on solution, which can be applied to existing garments, is designed to offer low cost protection for healthcare facilities, such as hospitals. Chemical impregnated materials already exist, but have to be added during manufacture. The new solution can be applied to natural and synthetic textiles including clothes, home carpets, shoes and even plastics. The scientists said the treatment kills a wide range of dangerous pathogens, including staph, strep, E. coli,
pseudomonas acetinobacter.
and
Many of these can cause disease, break down fabrics, create stains and produce odours. When they tested the product, they found that a single application was enough to stop all further bacterial growth at up to 37 degrees Celsius. And the solution did not degrade even after multiple hot water laundry cycles. Its primary application is expected to be in healthcare. According to the US federal agency Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 20 hospitalised patients contracts a healthcareassociated infection.

Sue Andrew I read with interest the article from Roy Hughes of Torremeulle regarding the pensioners. I wondered if it is possible to pass my email address on to Roy as I would like to talk to him and his wife, as she is a founder
Arroyo de la Miel member of the British Pensioners Abroad, and let him know that I have been in communication with David Cameron & Nick Clegg regarding the pensioners. I live in Arroyo de la Miel so quite close to Mr & Mrs Hughes.
Harold Rice Once again we have had no town water down in our area of La Carreta, Coin for the last couple of weeks. There was a dribble came through last Monday but our neighbours, Annie and Dave have visitors coming and not a drop apart from the 2000 litres that the town hall sent by tanker. I saw a water tanker going past our camino and further up the acequia road last night (Sunday) at around 10pm so the problem must be even further reaching than our
Coin little area. We will be in the same position needing a tanker by Monday and there are about 10 water meters at the top of our road that are all stationary meaning that no-one in this area is using any town water. We are being told the pipes have cal'd up but can't believe this as we had plenty of water until a couple of weeks ago and as far as we know there is no water shortage this year.
that this is going on and, if so, please do something about it now. These people pay their rates the same as the rest of us and it would be reasonable if there was a problem for a couple of days but, over two weeks? I think not! We have been told at the time of going to press that it is very unlikely that the tanker that delivers water to these people will be fixed this week. See comments in my column and article on page 13.

be most grateful to receive it. Or if you would put me in touch with Roy Hughes. I found the last paragraph mind shattering, that anyone has ever had any help from the British Consulate must be worthy of the Guinness Book of Records. I am still waiting for a reply from the Madrid Consulate five years on.

NASA R.I.P? With one final roar of its engines the last ever flight of a space shuttle blasted off from Cape Canaveral last Friday and marked the end of an era for space exploration.
A
nd could this be the end for NASA? NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) was formed on 29th July 1958; its aim was to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. Oh sorry, that was the other lot!
N
Editor says: Come on Coin council – are you even aware
Charles H Butters I recently came across your paper. I do not live on the Costa del Sol and English language newspapers are rare here. I now seek it out for the Stargazing page. I am writing, however about Roy Hughes's letter of 29th June issue. I have never heard of the British Pensioners Abroad. If you have any more information I would
Many thanks for your assistance. Editor says: I have forwarded on a couple of emails to the Hughes and hope that something can be done about pensionable ages in the near future for those of us caught in this trap.
They were quick enough to take almost 200 euros for passport which is no different from any other EU passport apart from the exorbitant cost and the crap about her Brittanic Majesty by whom they meant, presumably, Betty Windsor one of the world's longest living parasites. Editor says: I have forwarded your email onto Roy and Rachel Hughes who would be glad to hear from anybody who has concerns or fears about their pensions. On a personal note, I have always found the Consulate helpful and I think the Queen works her little socks off doing fantastic work for the UK given her age!

ASA was created in direct retaliation to the Russians leading the race into space with the launch of their Sputnik satellite in 1957. President Eisenhower signed the official decree replacing the original National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and NASA was born with Nazi rocket scientist Werner Von Braun as its head scientist. Von Braun was responsible for designing and building the V2 rockets that fell on London during the Second World War.
B
ut while NASA was making small steps the Russians were making giant leaps with the first satellite, first dog and first man in Space. NASA replied on May 5th 1961 when Alan Shepard became the first American in Space. Project Mercury was the name of NASAs first manned rockets program and seven single man flights were made up to 1965. On May 25th 1961 President Kennedy made an emotional speech to the American people pledging that they should ‘set the goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade’. The gloves were now off and America plunged head first into achieving Kennedy’s promise. NASA’s budget went from $100 million in 1958 to more than $25 billion overnight.
N
ASA knew that to get to the Moon would take a rocket of immense size and power. It would have to carry three men plus an extra vehicle for landing on the Moon and so while the giant 365 feet tall Saturn V rocket was being built experience in space flight was continuing with the second space program called Gemini. Gemini was a short-lived program consisting of 10 rockets that were capable of carrying two men into orbit and even attempting to dock two rockets together which is something that would have to be done on a trip to the Moon.
T
wo US fighter pilots, Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin who had seen action in the Korean war, enrolled early in the Gemini program and went on to become the first men on the Moon. Apollo was to be the name of the next series of space flights after Gemini but sadly the first test of the Apollo 1 rocket in 1965 resulted in the death of three astronauts when a fire broke out while the rocket was still on the launch pad.
T
he Apollo program was scheduled to run up to Apollo 21 but budget cuts saw the flights cut down and ended in 1972 after Apollo 17. Sections from the Apollo 18 rocket were revamped to create the Skylab space station which was launched in 1973. But Skylab was a temporary step and only saw three crews between 1973 and 1974. It crashed back to Earth in 1979. NASA had its sights set on a reusable space rocket and so the first space shuttle Columbia was launched in 1981. Since then a total of 135 launches of a space shuttle have taken place.
B
ut while the achievements of the space shuttle include building the International Space Station and repairing the stricken Hubble Space Telescope, it never quite lived up to expectations of cheap space flights and so last Friday saw the last ever flight with no replacement currently in progress. Plans to return to the Moon before the end of this decade seem to have fizzled out as America lost its love for Space. So for the moment it seems like goodnight and God Bless NASA, we thank thee! US space shuttle Atlantis arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday to deliver a last batch of supplies to the orbiting outpost on the final flight of the US shuttle. Commander Chris Ferguson gently eased Atlantis into its parking slip on the station's Harmony node at 11:07am. EDT. (Pictured are Specialists Rex Walheim and Sandy Magnus, Pilot Doug Hurley, and Commander Chris Ferguson) about to board the Astrovan
Alonso finally tames Red Bulls to claim British Grand Prix There was no rain during the race, but some pre-race precipitation had left the drivers with a tough decision on tyre choice before the start The sections of track around Luffield, Becketts and Copse were damp enough for the full wet tyres, but the pit straight was dry enough for slicks. The entire field chose to start the race on the intermediate tyres – a wise decision judging by the spray kicked up on the formation lap. And it was Spain's Fernando Alonso who won the British Grand Prix for Ferrari's first victory of the season on the 60th anniversary of their first success in Formula One. "I had two laps today with that (1951) car before the parade," said Alonso of Argentine Jose Froilan Gonzalez's historic Ferrari. Now 60 years later on the same circuit, with the same atmosphere and the same passion, winning again. I'm very proud...it made a special day."
The win, gifted to him by Red Bull after world champion
Sebastian Vettel was slowed by a wheelnut problem at his second pitstop, was the 27th of Alonso's career and lifted him level with the great Jackie Stewart in fifth position in the all-time lists. Alonso took the lead on the 28th of the 52 laps when he pitted right behind Vettel, who had grabbed the lead off the grid. As the German's crew battled with the wheelgun, the Spaniard slipped past and was gone. McLaren's Jenson Button's home-race jinx continued with the 31year-old's hopes also wrecked by a wheelgun when he was waved away before the right front nut had been secured 12 laps
from the end. With the wheel wobbling wildly, he parked up at the pit lane exit and walked back to the garages without speaking to reporters. Button has
yet climb the F1 podium Silverstone after attempts.

Australian Mark Webber, who had started on pole position, finished third for Red Bull after trying to pass his team mate on the penultimate lap and then being told to maintain his position. Red Bull team boss Christian
Horner recognised afterwards that "obviously Mark disagreed" with the order not to pass Vettel. Jenson Button's teammate Lewis Hamilton entertained the fans by roaring from 10th on the grid to fourth,
banging bodywork in a furious battle with Ferrari's Felipe Massa who had tried down the outside on the penultimate corner, leaving Hamilton with nowhere to go. He locked a wheel in a last-ditch braking attempt and Massa tried just too soon, leaving both cars minus bodywork as they headed for the final bend where Lewis Hamilton forced Massa wide and took fourth position, just missing out on an unexpected podium place. Paul di Resta’s race was ruined when he came in for his second stop. His Force India team had a set of Sutil’s tyres ready instead, and so Di Resta had to sit stationary whilst his pit crew found the correct tyres.
Six new MotoGP teams for 2012 entries announced
leO’S AUTOS
The decision was taken to focus on existing grand prix teams when considering who to include on next year's MotoGP grid.
The six teams to secure an entry are:
WOrkSHOp & MOBIle
By Queroseno Racing (BQR) Forward Racing Kiefer Racing Marc VDS Racing Paddock GP Racing (Interwetten) Speed Master
Open MOndAy TO FrIdAy 10 - 7 pM nO SIeSTA
The FIM has confirmed six new teams have been offered a contract of participation with IRTA for the 2012 MotoGP World Championship, in addition to the current competitors. Among those to gain an entry include Marc VDS Racing – which has been helping Suter develop a 'Moto1' chassis – current Moto2 leaders Kiefer Racing and Andrea Iannone's Speed Master team. A short statement
from the governing body confirmed that it received more applications than places available, prompting them to focus on those already competing at grand prix level in Moto2 during the selection process.
However, a statement that read 'the offer is with respect to one rider only and is subject to the submission of their final plans', suggests these positions remain fairly provisional. Stefan Bradl of Kiefer Racing

Brit Bradley’s happy with Moto2 season Britain’s Bradley Smith lies third in the world championship and his Tech3 team third in the constructors' table at the halfway stage – the little factory in the south of France taking on some of the big names in grand prix racing and Smith still in his first year in the Moto2 World Championship –
although perhaps we should not be that surprised with the effort that everybody down there puts into racing.

the
Miraflores footbowl league reaches conclusion After a discussion amongst the club members in the spring it was agreed that the club should run a footbowl league competition through the summer. Member Dudley Calder had organised this type of event in previous years at other clubs, but this was a first at Miraflores.
The format was run over 8 weeks and involved a variation on the normal game of bowls, requiring three shots to be scored by one team in an end to gain a goal. Over the period teams were drawn each week, but individual scores were recorded to determine overall league positions. In addition to club members, members of other clubs and regular guests also participated this resulted in 22 people in the league. The last matches were played on Wednesday 6th July, with prizes and medals presented after
club day on Friday 8th July. Unfortunately a number of participants were missing at the presentation having returned to the UK for the summer. Those that remained enjoyed a barbecue after the prizes were awarded. The final results were: Ladies section – 4th: Esther
Gatter, 3rd: Ann Rowley, 2nd: Pam Kinane and winner Dorothy Pilmoor. In the mens section – 4th: Mike Kinane, 3rd: Fred
Stevenson, 2nd: Alan Turner and winner Paul O'Connell. In the overall table Dorothy was the outright winner. After the presentations thanks were given to Dudley for organising the event. Finally, a note for your diary: Miraflores are pleased to be hosting the Francisco Camero cup on 13th and 14th September, this will be a mixed 5's team competition with a limit to the number of teams that can enter. To avoid disappointment, make sure you get your entry in early either by email to info@mirafloreslbc.com or phone Carol on 610324587, there will be a prize of €250 for the winning team and €125 for the runners-up. Luke Donald storms to Scottish Open title Luke Donald warmed up perfectly for this week's British Open with a near perfect 9-under 63 to win the rainshortened Scottish Open by four strokes, This was his first victory since becoming the world's top-ranked player in May. 33-year-old Donald started the third and final round a shot behind a trio of joint leaders but rolled in nine birdies in a majestic bogey-free display at Castle Stuart.
Footbowl winners with organiser from L to R Dorothy Pilmoor, Dudley Calder (organiser) & Paul O'Connell.
With only light breezes blowing, the links course was defenseless, and Donald romped home with a winning total of 19 under, ahead of Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed (62). His eighth professional
Champions of Southern Spain Championship Decider - Third and final leg Fuengirola 258 for 8 beat Combined Colleges 164 all out by 92 runs “Catches win matches” is a snappy little phrase commonly heard in cricket circles. Six of the eight wickets taken by Combined Colleges were by means of catches taken, so why did they not win? The first part of the answer lies in the nine dropped catches which mainly preceded the ones which stuck. The Fuengirola openers came to the crease in determined fashion, plundering 13 runs of the second over then racing to 103 off 15 overs amid a flurry of dropped catches. The Combined Colleges bowlers got a grip around that stage and applied the brakes a bit, restricting Fuengirola to 23 runs off 7 overs for the loss of two wickets, ironically both to catches. A drinks break re-vitalised Fuengirola who took advantage of their strong position to throw the bat with abandon. Wickets fell at regular intervals but this did not slow the run rate and Fuengirola went on to add 130 runs in the last 13 overs. Fuengirola’s openers Shahid Kasana (48) and Nadeem Hassan (93) were the rocks on which
the innings was built. Another part of the answer to the earlier question lies in the strength of Fuengirola’s bowling attack. Yet another lies in their eager and effective fielding. They simply starved Combined Colleges of runs. After 10 overs only 35 runs had been scored for the loss of Azard run out by a direct hit from a long, strong throw from Shahid Kasana at long on. This brought Nushan to the crease looking in good attacking form and likely to make a lot of runs. And who knows? He might have done if he hadn’t struck a massively powerful straight drive back towards the bowler just below knee height for Tanveer to take the catch of the match. How it didn’t pull his arms out of their sockets we’ll never know. Two overs later Brian and Shoaib were in a hopeless tangle, both near the same end and the run out was a mere formality. So, 15 overs gone, 61 for 3. For a brief period it seemed as if Previn and Shoaib might be able to turn things around until Shoaib pulled the ball straight to Shahid
Kasana in the deep at backward square leg. Shahid, like the rest of the Fuengirola team wasn’t suffering from the dropsy epidemic and that was the end of Shoaib. It was the end too of any realistic chance of victory for Combined Colleges. Fuengirola duly emerged victorious by a large margin with three overs to spare. It would be invidious even to try to pick a man of the match for this one. Any award could only go the way of the victors. Did their opening batsmen contribute more than their four main bowlers and did either of those groups contribute more than the splendid fielding performance? On this occasion there can only be a hearty “well done everyone” to the whole Fuengirola team who can now bask in the title of Champions of Southern Spain. Well done them – may they bask away to their hearts content. Until September that is, when they begin their defence of the title.
title — and third this year cemented his top ranking, which he secured for the first time nearly two months ago by beating compatriot Lee Westwood in a playoff for the PGA Championship at Wentworth on his last appearance in Europe. It also provided the ideal pick me up ahead of the British Open at Royal St. George's starting Thursday, where he'll attempt to land his first major. "I felt good out there, very comfortable, very in control. That's a good sign for next week," said Donald, who is half Scottish and wore Tartan trousers for the final day. "There's always a little added pressure when you're No. 1 but hopefully I've proved I can handle that. It was a pretty strong field this week and the best way to prepare." British Open hopefuls Scott Jamieson of Scotland and Mark Tullo of Chile finished in a seven-way tie for third. However, it was the No. 203-ranked Jamieson who sank a birdie

at the last hole to secure the available qualifying spot for the year's third major — by virtue of having a higher ranking than Tullo by 29 places. "It was the first putt I had all day that I was really confident on my read, and it just reached the hole," said Jamieson, who will play at his first major. "It's not registered yet, to be honest." Colin Montgomerie had also been looking to qualify for his home major for the 22nd straight year but could only card a 70 to finish in a tie for 31st at 10 under. The former Europe Ryder Cup captain briefly shared the lead in the final round after a birdie at the sixth, but dropped four shots at the start of the back nine to shatter his hopes. No player has ever won the Scottish Open and gone on to win the British Open the following week, but Donald — a model of consistency this year — looks in good position to become the first.

McLaren ponder a principal change The calamitous afternoon Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button suffered at Silverstone means the British duo may be driving for a new team principal by the time Formula One returns to action after the August break. Martin Whitmarsh could have just one month to prove he remains the right man to lead McLaren after a series of errors cost both Hamilton and Button the chance of a podium finish at the British Grand Prix.

Flecha fights on Team Sky will establish the full facts surrounding Juan Antonio Flecha being hit by a car at the Tour de France before weighing up the options and deciding what, if any, action to take. Flecha was in a five-man breakaway 35 kilometres from the end of the 208km ninth stage from Issoire to Saint-Flour when he was hit by a French television vehicle, slamming to the tarmac and knocking fellow escapee Johnny Hoogerland off the road, where he suffered some horrific cuts after getting entangled in
barbed wire,(see picture). Tour organisers Amaury Sports Organisation excluded the car for the remainder of the race, and Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford, speaking at the team's hotel in the Massif Central on Monday's rest day, said: "It was plain for everyone to see – that crash shouldn't have happened. Everybody saw it, everyone saw the severity of it, so I don't think we need to fan the flames of that anymore. "Once you've got the facts then you can decide
and evaluate. We're jumping ahead of ourselves if we start talking about options at this point – we've got to determine what they are first. And only when we have a clear picture can we decide which option we may or may not wish to pursue." This year’s Tour has been beset by crashes on almost every stage. Bradley Wiggins the Team Sky leader was caught up in a mass pile-up 38 kilometres out on the 218km route from Le Mans to Chateauroux on stage seven. The injury was later confirmed as a broken left collarbone by the team and Wiggins was out of the tour. The hammer blow for the British-based outfit came almost exactly 24 hours after they had claimed their first stage win at the Tour, Edvald Boasson Hagen winning stage six in Lisieux.

a team, you lose as a team". Scott was backed up by Karen Bardsley and Claire Rafferty. England eventually lost 43 in the shootout after the match ended 1-1. And striker Eniola Aluko, who did not play against France, added: "Obviously [that saying] is just words. Unbelievable." Powell's comments were also in stark contrast to her mood immediately after the match according to Casey Stoney. "I don't think anyone's a coward and that's not the impression I got from Hope when she debriefed us after the game," Stoney told BBC Radio 5 live. "She said she was very proud and we should hold our heads up high."
Brilliant displays from Britain's Mo Farah, Dai Greene and Phillips Idowu brightened a damp evening in Birmingham as Asafa Powell won the 100m. Farah ran 13:06.14 in the 5,000m after Idowu leapt 17.54m to beat an under-par Teddy Tamgho in the triple jump. Greene's run though was gutsy and impressive in winning the 400m hurdles in a time of 48.20 and defeating former world champion Bershawn Jackson. Powell, fastest man in the world this year, sprinted to victory in 9.91 ahead of fellow Jamaican Nesta Carter.
