Air controllers' strike victims to sue Aena A lawyer for the people affected by last December's air controllers' strike has said they intend to sue the Spanish Airport Authority, Aena, because they consider the public company was “totally responsible” for the “savage strike”, which they claim could have been avoided. Sr Luis Vericat was speaking on the steps of the Madrid court complex where a judge started to question representatives of the air controllers on Monday.

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Bonkers 2!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
On Sunday night a friend of mine who owns a club had his premises broken into. These days, unfortunately, that isn’t something that would necessarily be newsworthy for one reason or another. However, said club is built on a hill with the front being higher than the back and the floor that sits on the hillside being constructed of reinforced concrete. The would-be burglar was apparently very short and had been trying for hours to get into the premises with a claw hammer and chisel. At some point or another he must have realised that he was chiselling away at a solid block so started trying to whack at the wall above his head. Luckily, a local neighbour heard the noise and called the police who apprehended the chiseller after a few shots were fired (they missed - I assume deliberately but....) and a bit of a chase, The person is now back on a plane to wherever he came from in the Eastern block. My point about bonkers is that a) if you’re too short, don’t try and hack through something that’s built way above your head, b) a claw hammer and a chisel... come on! and c) this is exactly why our prisons are full all over the world. These people are not only criminals, they’re stupid to boot! The rest of his cronies that nothing could be proved again have been “spoken to” by the local authorities and have moved on.

Rowdy Socialist senator resigns
Debt fears increase borrowing costs Spain has had to pay higher interest rates to borrow €4.45bn (£3.9bn) on the financial markets. In a bond auction on Tuesday the yield on loans repayable in 12 months was 3.702%, up from 2.695% paid on a fundraising in June. For 18-month bonds, the yield was 3.912%, up from 3.26%. The rise reflects greater concern about the risks of
lending to debt-laden Spain, despite Madrid's insistence that its economy is recovering. Traders, however, reported that demand for the bonds was strong. The Madrid stock exchange was up 1.6% in morning trading. The fund-raising
comes amid fears that the debt crisis that engulfed Greece could spread to other, larger, economies.
Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel has led calls for private investors to agree to defer Athens' debt repayments, but the European Central Bank (ECB) and ratings agencies have warned about the consequences of any actions that resemble a debt default.
On Thursday an emergency summit of eurozone leaders will try to agree a second bail-out for Greece involving private lenders and bondholders.
Councils' merger proposed The UDP (Union Progress & Democratic) party, which won seats in the Madrid regional parliament for the first time in May's local and regional elections, has proposed merging Madrid municipalities with less
than 100,000 inhabitants to save more than €20,000 million a year. The party's spokesman, Ramon Marcos, told the regional parliament that it should deal with “the size of municipalities” and “pay
more attention to people's real problems” instead of “wasting time trying to get Madrid chosen as the host the 2022 Olympics”. Of the country's 8,116 municipalities, more than 1,000 have less than 100 inhabitants.
www.thenewsonline.es
As a result of the economic crisis, an increasing number of public sector experts and businessmen see the merging of smaller municipalities as a way of reducing public spending.
The Socialist Party confirmed on Monday that one of its senators in the Upper House of the Canary Island regional government, was arrested with his son last Thursday for brawling with police officers in a Madrid sauna. In a press release Sr Curbelo said he intends to fight to prove his innocence and that of his son and that he wanted to do so “as an ordinary citizen, without the privileges that come with a senator's seat." The police were called in when the two men started smashing up the sauna. They resisted arrest and Sr Curbelo, 60, allegedly yelled at the officers: "I want to see you all die of cancer," and "I am a senator and I'm going after you one by one. Your careers are finished." Sr Curbelo has been a member of the Canary Island regional parliament for the past18 years.
EU questions Denmark's new border controls The European Commission, which monitors compliance with EU treaties, has said it is not convinced that Denmark's reimposition of border controls is justified. It suspects that the move violates the Schengen Agreement on open borders and called on Denmark to "demonstrate factually that the gravity of

the situation justifies putting in place controls". Fifty extra customs officers are now at entry points from Germany and Sweden. The Danish government said the deployment on July 5th would help fight organised crime and people trafficking. Denmark's centre-right coalition stepped up border
controls after pressure from its populist ally, the right-wing Danish People's Party (DPP), to do so. Before the Danish move both France and Italy also raised new questions about Schengen, as an influx of illegal migrants from North Africa fuelled demands for extra passport checks.

Five Spanish banks fail EU stress test Five Spanish, one Austrian and two Greek banks out of 90 European banks have failed stress tests designed to ensure they can withstand another financial crisis. The European Banking Authority (EBA), which carried out the health check, said another 16 banks were in the danger zone. The Spanish banks were Catalunya Caixa, Pastor, Unnim, Caja3 and CAM. The EBA said the Spanish banks needed additional capital of €1,564 million – the CAM alone has a deficit of €947 million. Two of the most solvent banks were

Bank of Spain governor Miguel Angel Fernandez Ordoñez told a press conference there was no need to inject further capital into the banks as the sector was already undergoing a fundamental restructuring. He also said the banks were not the main problem in Europe: “The No 1 problem is the EU's incapacity to find a solution for the Greek
economic crisis.” He said the politicians' fear of losing popularity meant they left all the meetings on the matter empty-handed. “The
most serious thing is that Greece cannot pay its debt. Beside that, all the other problems are little ones,” he said. Sr Fernandez Ordoñez
reiterated the need for more far-reaching reforms in Spain, especially those aimed at stimulating job creation.

Spain summons Iraqis
Justice at last for man in coma Six insurance companies reached an out-of-court settlement last week to pay €1.075 million to Antonio Meño who, when he was a 21-year-old law student, fell into a coma in 1989 following cosmetic nose surgery at the Nuestra Señora de América clinic. His family had suffered a series of legal blows during their 20-year quest to get indemnity for their son. The hospital claimed Meños choked on his own vomit after the procedure but the family always blamed the anaesthetist who was on duty at the time. In 1993, the anaesthetist was found guilty of
negligence but the conviction was reversed by a higher court five years later. The family appealed but in 2008 the Supreme Court upheld the acquittal and ordered the Meños to pay €400,000 to the anaesthetist to cover his legal fees. The parents, both retired bakers, had camped outside the Justice Ministry for 16 months with their son after
they sold their home to pay the legal costs. Last November, the court reversed its decision and ordered the case reopened when Ignacio Frade, a trainee doctor at the time, came forward with new evidence against the anaesthetist. The clinic and the Meño family then decided to reach an out-ofcourt settlement.
Judge Fernando Andreu has summoned three Iraqi officers to appear before the Madrid court on 3rd October 2011 in connection with a raid by Iraqi security forces on a camp housing an Iranian exile group, in which 34 were killed, according to the UN. Judge Andreu is investigating allegations that crimes against humanity were committed during the raid on Camp Ashraf, in Diyala province, in April 2011. He has summoned Gen Ali Ghaidan Majid, the head of the army, and two other officers to appear. Under Spain's universal justice doctrine, serious crimes

Huge cash stash seized The National Police seized two stashes of cash totalling € 25 million in a raid on a suspected money launderer's house in Madrid last week. Sixteen people were arrested in Spain and four in the United States by the FBI which had been collaborating with the
Spanish police, together with the Miami Attorney General's Office. Police said it was the biggest money laundering operation in Europe and that the stash was the largest ever seized in a single raid. It was buried in two holes in the basement of the house. In
addition, 21 properties have been seized in Spain and four in the US, as well as 60 cars valued at more than €2 million. The police said the leader of the gang had been jailed in Miami for drug trafficking and had turned to money laundering after his release.

Most tragic weekend for road deaths A traffic authority spokesman said on Monday that the weekend starting 8 pm on July 15th and ending 8 pm on July 17th had been the most tragic one for road deaths in the past two years. Twenty-eight people were killed in 23 accidents and another 14 were seriously injured. Eleven died when their vehicles left the road and another eight deaths were caused by speeding, the spokesman said. At least 15 of the victims were aged under 35.
Despite the recent theft of the priceless 12thcentury Codex Calixtinus from the Santiago de Compostela cathedral, Spain no longer figures on Interpol's art robbery blacklist. The Codex was the first major theft since since the 1989 robbery of two priceless Velázquez paintings from the Royal Palace in Madrid, the whereabouts of which are still unknown. Since then inventories have been kept updated and security tightened so that museums, galleries and libraries are no longer so careless about their possessions. One example
of such carelessness was when the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid admitted that four blocks of 38 tons apiece had vanished from the warehouse of a company contracted to store them. When on display they formed Richard Serra's Equal Parallel/GuernicaBengasi but stacked in a warehouse they looked like virgin blocks of stone that could be used by another sculptor. The
original blocks have never reappeared and the museum has been exhibiting a copy since 2009, made by Serra himself. The worst period for Spanish art was between 1975 and 1981. During that period, intruders destroyed three medieval treasures in Oviedo cathedral – the Cross of the Angels, the Cross of
CATALONIA Victory and the Arc of the Agates. 1978 saw the theft of the 10th-century altarpiece of the Shrine of San Miguel de Aralar in Navarre. It was recovered, in pieces, two years later in France and Italy. Today, Italy dominates the Interpol list of significant art robberies.
Turn your car in and get a life-long tram ticket Residents of Murcia capital have been turning in their cars, which must be in working order with a valid ITV – in exchange for an everlasting ticket on the
city's new tram system which was inaugurated in June. The initiative is part of an environmental scheme to reduce congestion and emissions and encourage
the use of public transport. The donated cars are being displayed around the city, usually in places where they highlight traffic
problems. The city council invited the public to participate in the scheme through the Facebook and Twitter social networks.

Public sector jobs to be slashed The regional government announced last week plans to dispense with the services of 1,475 of its 16,000 workers and started by laying off 70 people at Gisa, its public works authority. It also announced that public employees would have to work more hours, or take fewer vacation days, in return for no additional – and possibly less – pay. Public workers fear the regional government's aim of cutting its deficit this year by 10 per cent will lead to a chronic deterioration of basic services. MADRID
Culture capital investigated The Culture Ministry is investigating the selection process that awarded San Sebastian the title of 2016 European Capital of Culture, after receiving complaints from officials in Cordoba, Burgos, Las Palmas, Segovia and Zaragoza, that the jury had mixed politics and culture. Cordoba mayor José Antonio Nieto said he had received an anonymous CD with incriminating information on jury member Cristina Ortega, a former cultural advisor to the Basque regional government who may have helped with San Sebastian's bid.

Fukushima beef banned
The US state department confirmed on Monday that US officials had held faceto-face talks with representatives of Col Muammar Gaddafi's government. A spokesman said the meeting was held to reiterate the US demand that Col Gaddafi step down, and involved no negotiations. The US did not give the location of the talks, but Libya said they had taken place on Saturday in neighbouring Tunisia. Washington said that Jeffrey Feltman, the US assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, and the US ambassador to Libya Gene Cretz, had been involved in the talks, but would not say who

After 136 cows were found to have consumed feed affected by radioactive caesium, Senior Vice Health Minister Kohei Otsuka said all cattle shipments from Fukushima will be suspended, adding that beef from surrounding areas may also be affected. It is the latest health scare linked to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant damaged by the March earthquake. The major supermarket chain Aeon said that hundreds of kilos of the beef had been sold at 14 of its stores in Tokyo and the surrounding areas. AUSTRIA
Anthem to mention daughters The new version of the national anthem, in which the phrase "Home of great sons, you are" will be changed to "Home of great daughters, great sons", is expected to get the official green light in a parliamentary vote in the autumn. The anthem's text dates back to 1947. The drive to change it gained momentum last week when a former women's affairs minister, Maria Rauch-Kallat of the Austrian People's Party (OVP), put forward a motion to amend the text. MexIcO
President-elect asks for family discretion
Huge marijuana farm discovered
Peru's president-elect Ollanta Humala has called on his family to refrain from making comments in the media or trying to take advantage of their relationship with him. Sr Humala, who takes office next week, said the best way to help a president was to let him work. Polls show his popularity plummeted after it became known that his brother had visited Russia earlier this month and met senior officials in Moscow. Alexis Humala presented himself as an official Peruvian
representative to Russia to discuss gas, fishery and arms deals. The president-elect denied he had sent for his brother and suspended him from his political party. Critics are calling for the younger brother's expulsion. During his successful campaign for the Peruvian presidency, Sr Humala sought to distance
himself from the radical left-wing views of his father and other brothers. They proved a liability in his last presidential bid in 2006, when he was defeated by Alan Garcia. Sr Humala has since recast himself as a moderate – proposing a Brazilian-style mix of social reforms with market economic growth –
and has reassured investors in one of the world's fastest growing economies by saying he will keep on Peru's successful central bank president, Julio Velarde. But unless he is able to control his own family's actions, Sr Humala may find any chance of a political honeymoon will have ended before it has even begun.

Gold hits record price
NEW!
The price of gold jumped above $1,600 an ounce for the first time on Monday as investors continued to worry about government debt crises in the US and Europe. The precious metal rose $12.30 to settle at $1,602 an ounce in London trading. Monday capped a record breaking rally – 11 straight days of gains. Gold is considered a safe investment and usually gains at times of global economic uncertainty. Silver also rallied more than 3% to a two-month high, above $40 an ounce. The record
breaking price comes ahead of Thursday's summit of eurozone leaders in Brussels where they will once again try to contain the growing debt crisis.
Meanwhile in the US politicians are struggling to reach an agreement on a deficit reduction plan in time to avoid a debt default before the August 2nd deadline.
Investors are concerned that Greece may default on its debt, and countries such as Italy and Spain, who are also struggling with high debt levels, will get pulled into the crisis.
Financial experts said investors are concerned about both the US dollar and the euro and are looking for an alternative such as gold and other socalled hard commodities.
Stolen missile warheads recovered Old rocket warheads stolen from a train in Romania at the weekend were recovered yesterday stashed at a railway station just north of Bucharest. Romanian officials had reassured the public that the warheads taken from a railway car carrying

Sean Hoare, 47, was the paper’s former showbiz reporter and had rubbed shoulders with many stars of screen and TV in his time working there. He was known for his hard drinking as well as drug taking, although of recent years he had said that he didn’t drink or smoke anymore but just “treated himself” to the odd bottle of wine and the occasional fag on his way home from work.
where phone hacking took place". Just last week, he made new allegations in the New York Times about journalists paying money to the police and about them using people’s mobile phone signals, known as pinging, to locate where they – and the subsequent story – were.
His death comes less than a year after he became the first named journalist to allege that the paper's one-time editor Andy Coulson knew about hacking at the tabloid – claiming that News International journalists had to do whatever was necessary to get a story.
Sean Hoare’s health had suffered greatly from his years of alcohol and drug abuse. "His health never recovered," wrote one of his former colleagues. The Guardian's Nick Davies, leader of the paper's phone-hacking investigation, which uncovered many of the allegations that led to the closure of the News of the World, added that Hoare was "a lovely man."
Mr Hoare, once a close friend of Mr Coulson, said: "He was well aware that the practice exists. To deny it is a lie, simply a lie."
David Yelland, a former editor of The Sun, paid tribute on Twitter, writing: "Sean Hoare was trying to be honest, struggling with addiction. But he was a good man."
Mr Coulson, who was then the Prime Minister's communications chief, denied the claims, saying he had "never condoned the use of phone hacking and nor do I have any recollection of incidences

and a committee to look into them, nothing was ever done until recently. Indeed at one point Mr Hoare was interviewed by the police, not as an informer but as a suspect in the case. Mr Hoare's death means that his in-depth knowledge of alleged illegality at the defunct Sunday redtop will not be available to the public inquiry into illicit behaviour by the press, which was confirmed by David Cameron last week. It is not known whether Operation Weeting, the current police investigation into phone hacking at the NOTW, interviewed him. The cause of his death, although unexplained at the time of going to press was deemed as “not under suspicious circumstances” by the police. However, he lived long enough to see the arrest of Mr Coulson – who still denies any wrongdoing – on suspicion of phone hacking a fortnight ago and police corruption earlier this month.

BAA must sell airports The Competitions Commission has told British Airports Authorities that they must sell Stanstead and either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports. BAA, mostly owned by the Spanish company Ferrovial, has been under investigation by the Commission for some time and two years ago sold off Gatwick airport in London
to Global Infrastructure Partners, which also own London City Airport. These further sales, according to the Commission should commence in three months time. When ordered to sell Stanstead BAA lodged an appeal which it has since lost. Chief Executive, Colin Matthews, said he was “dismayed by the decision.”
Commenting on its ruling, Peter Freeman from the Commission said: “Our report has been challenged, reviewed and upheld and it is clear that the original decision to require BAA to divest itself of three airports (including Gatwick) remains the right one for customers.” BAA also still run Heathrow, Aberdeen and Southampton airports.
No more Reserves going up Murdochs
In a television interview on Monday, a journalist from The Times newspaper declared that there will be no more Murdochs saying that: “The dynasty is over. If you want Dynasty, watch Jackie Collins!” Yesterday (Tuesday), scenes while Rupert Murdoch was being grilled by MP’s took on an air of farce which included a shaving foam custard pie being launched at him by a protester, comedian Johnny Marbles. Murdoch’s wife Wendi Deng launched a counter attack while Rupert Murdoch and son James answered their last two questions of the day. She leapt up, pushing the assailant away, then smacked him over the head with his own plate as he was led away by police. The hearing was suspended as the man, wearing a checked shirt, was detained by police. As he was taken out of the building in handcuffs, the man refused to give his name, saying: "As Mr Murdoch himself said, I'm afraid I cannot comment on an ongoing police investigation." Describing himself as an activist and comedian, Mr Marbles wrote on Twitter just before the incident: "It is a far better thing that I do now than I have ever done before #splat." Ealing Studios in their heyday could not have done better!
The number of “reserves” and Territorial Army personnel is to increase dramatically in the British Army – causing fears among some top brass that the army would not be able to cope in the event of war.
personnel would be reduced by 100,000 by the end of the decade, while trying to plug the £38 billion black hole the army reported recently – plus another £1.5 billion reported just last week.
The government has revealed plans to replace some 150,000 full-time soldiers which would bring the number of army personnel down to its lowest since the First World War.
In other countries, both the USA and Australia has 20% of their strength made up by reservists, Canada has 35%. Other cuts mean that 14 Chinook helicopters ordered will not be used.
The plans mean that
e price of a loaf of bread It has just been revealed that a loaf of bread is costing the National Health Service in the UK £32.27!A normal loaf costs around £2.25 from your local supermarket but people who are gluten intolerant have been getting their bread on prescription and that is how much it has been costing the NHS. People interviewed on the street by journalists
said they had no idea that this was happening and could not understand why gluten intolerant people should get their food on prescription. One elderly lady declared: “If I want a loaf, I have to pay for it so why shouldn’t they? I’m allergic to eggs but nobody pays for egg free cakes for me – perhaps I’ll go and ask my doctor for a prescription for them!”

Costa de la Luz towns reject wind parks The mayors of Conil, Barbate and Vejer on Cadiz's “Coast of Light” remain unswayed by the promise of work for their inhabitants and have flatly rejected plans to build wind parks off their beaches. The reason is not political – the mayors belong to three different parties, the United Left (IU), the Socialist Party and the Partido Popular – but rather a mixture of aesthetics and economics. The Cadiz coast is still largely unspoilt and the mayors want to keep it that way because they
appreciate the tourism revenue its beauty brings in. The IU mayor of Conil, Antonio Roldan, told the company that is eyeing his beaches with longing to “go and build on industrialised parts of the coastline” and suggested the part of Cadiz Bay which is where the shipyards are located. Mayors demand toll free road The mayors of Marbella and Estepona have countered the Public Works ministry's decision to lower the speed limit on the A-7 between Fuengirola and Estepona with a demand for the removal of the tolls in the area. Mayors Angeles Muñoz and José María Garcia Urbano suspect the move to reduce the speed limit to 80 kph arose from a “desire to collect more fines” and not safety concerns, and said that in the summer drivers would be forced to use the toll road to avoid traffic jams. On Monday, they said they intended to ask the Madrid government to remove the tolls on the AP-7 on its passage through the Costa del Sol.
New court has no judge The Court of the First Instance No 5 was officially opened on June 30th to deal with civil cases, and on paper appears to be functioning – except that it does not have a judge or a secretary. A judge has been appointed, according to the Official Gazette, but has yet to appear and the secretary is ill, a local official said. Meanwhile, legal clerks are receiving cases, but shelving them for the time being. The town’s courts are among the most overloaded in Andalucia. COSTA DEL SOL
No money to pay for boats Estepona, Benalmádena, Mijas and Torremolinos will not have boats to clean up sea foam this year due to lack of money. Two years ago, the Provincial Tourism Department and the Costa towns agreed that their 161 kilometres of beaches should have the services of 25 boats to deal with the problem, caused mainly by the lack of an integral waste disposal system. But the four towns decided they could not provide the six boats they had agreed to, because of lack of funds.

Points system comes to town The town council is finally applying the points system which came into effect across the country five years ago. It had never got round to approving the change in the traffic ordinance needed to apply the system, because it didn’t agree with the procedure for collecting the fines, much to the relief of local drivers. But it has finally given in and is expected to approve the change shortly. However, the police are already applying it in practice.

Atlantis shuttle undocks for the last time The US shuttle Atlantis undocked from the International Space Station on schedule at 0628 GMT on Tuesday and when it makes a final landing at the Kennedy Space Centre on Thursday morning, it will bring to a close Nasa's 30year re-usable spaceplane programme. As his ship slipped away Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson said: "Farewell ISS, make us proud." The shuttle moved to a point about 600ft off the bow of the platform, which then swung about 90 degrees, enabling the Atlantis to fly over the 400tonne structure. Photographs were taken along its truss, or backbone, and of the ends of some of the modules, which will help engineers on the ground to understand better how the various elements that make up the ISS are coping in the harsh environment of space.
Parting presents The shuttle's crew of four presented the station crew of six with two leaving presents before climbing aboard the orbiter and closing the hatch. One was a model of the shuttle - a
reminder of the pivotal role the vehicle has played in building the station - and the other was a small American flag flown on the very first space shuttle mission in 1981. This flag will be handed to the first American astronauts to reach the ISS on one of the privately operated space vehicles NASA is now encouraging to replace the shuttle. The first private companies to transport crew to and from the station are not expected to begin operations for at least three years.
Food for garbage Earlier on Monday, the 6.5m-long Raffaello logistics module brought up by Atlantis and attached temporarily to the station was returned to the shuttle's payload bay. Raffaello was used to

deliver some four tonnes of supplies to the ISS, including over a tonne of food. The cylinder has now been packed with about 2.5 tonnes of unneeded materials from the station that will be brought back to Earth.
Touch down Atlantis is set to touch down on Kennedy's runway at 0557 local time (0957 GMT) on Thursday. NASA’s orbiter programme officially ends 30 days after wheel stop, although it will take about two years to close all activities, including the archiving of decades of engineering data. Atlantis itself will be made safe for public display at the Kennedy visitors complex.
Shuttle retirement will leave a gap in America's astronaut-launch capability that is unlikely to be filled for at least three or four years until the first of a range of commercial American launch vehicles are ready to fly.

No more flip-flops in the car For years it has been a sensible regulation pretty much all over Europe that footwear should be solid and not likely to fall off while you are driving. However, and also for years, the population of hot countries, particularly Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal, have been driving in flip-flops, backless
sandals and even bare feet. But not any more. Police in the north of Spain have been having a real crackdown on this practice with roadblocks and spot checks where drivers being found wearing these types of sandals – or no shoes at all – have been getting on-thespot fines of €150.
So, to clarify – closed in footwear like shoes and trainers are OK, canvas shoes that fully enclose the foot are OK and sandals with backs in are OK. Anything else and you risk a big fine. So, keep a spare pair of shoes in the car with you to drive in at all times and change out of your flipflops in future before you start the engine!

Gibraltar
News Written Ministerial Statement - Sites of Community Importance (Gibraltar) In February 2009 environmental experts in Gibraltar identified that the European Commission had adopted the proposal by the Spanish Government to designate under the Habitats Directive a Site of Community Importance (SCI). The SCI, named Estrecho Oriental, overlaps the coordinates of British Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW) and entirely overlaps an existing adopted UK SCI, Southern Waters of Gibraltar, which is managed by the Government of Gibraltar (subsequently designated by the Government of Gibraltar as a Special Area of Conservation – SAC). The UK has sought to reverse the adoption of the Spanish site, first through diplomatic action with the European Commission and the Government of Spain and then through legal action. We continue to work closely with the
Government of Gibraltar in order to resolve this issue. The original legal case was launched by the UK in the European General Court (EGC) on 22nd December 2009. This challenged the European Commission’s listing of this site as a Spanish Site of Community Importance. The Government is clear that only the UK can submit sites covering BGTW. Spain cannot enforce the management or monitoring of the specific area in question. There is therefore a risk that, given its lack of access to this site, Spain will make decisions without accurate scientific information which could have detrimental environmental or economic impact on Gibraltar and BGTW. On 24th May 2011 the EGC ruled the UK’s case inadmissible on technical grounds, ruling that the UK
Training has started The Gala Casino took on five trainees on Monday to train as Gaming Hosts at the establishment in Ocean Village who will, on successful completion of the six-month course be offered permanent jobs. They will be trained in Bingo, Black Jack and Poker among other popular games. This is the second year that Gala Casino in conjunction with the Gibraltar Government has carried out the training and four out of the five firsttime candidates successfully landed jobs
should have challenged the Commission’s original rather than subsequent confirmatory decision to list the site. The UK’s rebuttal stated that due to the Commission’s deficient processes, lack of transparency and consultation, it had been unable to do so within the normal time limit. We have also highlighted that when the UK put forward its Southern Waters of Gibraltar site it did so on the basis of consultation with Spain, which was insisted on by the Commission. The Commission did not insist that Spain consult the UK before the listing of Estrecho Oriental. Following extensive consultation and on the basis of legal advice the UK will be appealing against the Court’s decision. The Government has a clear responsibility to uphold the UK’s position over the
waters around Gibraltar. I want to reassure the people of Gibraltar that we will defend their interests on this matter. The Government of Gibraltar had also launched its own separate legal action, which the UK supported. This was also ruled inadmissible on technical grounds. The Government of Gibraltar is appealing against that decision. I will keep the House informed of further significant developments in the case. Written 18th July 2011 by FCO Ministers in the House of Commons and sent to The News by the Office of the Governor of Gibraltar. Memo from

Muriel Pilkington
Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
75 years on
M
onday, July 18th, marked the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, a bloody episode in the country's history that still has people at loggerheads about “what really happened”, with some politicians trying to make political capital out of keeping the wounds open.
H
owever, if what I've been watching on TVE1 in the past few days is anything to go by, an increasing number of Spanish historians and political commentators are beginning to act as a counterweight to small but very vocal elements on the political scene which insist on perpetuating the myth that all the Republicans were good and all of Franco's people were evil. Franco committed many terrible crimes in his “mission” to save Spain from communists, anarchists, labour leaders and the like, but the Second Republic was also guilty because none of the three governments elected from April 1931 to July 1936 were able to control the wilder elements – those very same people who Franco hated so passionately – unleashed by the departure of King Alfonso XIII.
F
ranco cannot be blamed for the church burnings that started in Malaga and Madrid in May 1931, nor the systematic rape and murder of thousands of nuns and priests, often carried out with unbelievable savagery, that started before the war broke. By the end of the war, more than 8,000 had been killed. On the other side, Franco's Moroccan troops were given free rein to “punish” that savagery after they started landing on the southern coast near Algeciras. By the time they arrived on the outskirts of Madrid just under three months later, they had acquired such an evil reputation that Spaniards would shudder at the very mention of their name long after the civil war was over.
I
t also cannot be denied that Franco carried out a systematic political “cleansing” as he went along, determined to rid the country of the elements “guilty” of trying to sweep away the “old Spain”.
T
he worst Republican excesses occurred in the first two or three months of the war. In Ronda, just
Disloyal opposition over 500 people were hurled to their death in the gorge for “sympathising with Franco”. In fact, those “sympathisers” were largely middle class people, who owned stores and small businesses, or were schoolteachers, lawyers, engineers, public sector workers – anyone who enjoyed a better standard of living than the masses because, first and foremost, this was a class war. The pattern would be repeated in towns and villages across the south of Spain, and when these fell to the Nationalist troops, it would be reversed – this time the people who were put up against the wall and shot were workers, labour leaders, known communists, anarchists or socialists and anyone suspected of having taken up arms to defend the legitimately elected Republican government.
S
T
T
he worst single atrocity of the war was carried out by the Republic militia in Madrid, who were mainly anarchists. In November that year, they emptied Madrid's jails of alleged Franco sympathisers and took some three to five thousand of them – the figures are still disputed – to Paracuellos, where they were executed.
F
ranco continued his political cleansing until 1943 or thereabouts, by which time the most savage repression had petered out. For the next two decades he used the memory of those years to inspire enough fear in average Spaniards to keep them quiet. Today, when younger people demand of their elders “Why did you tolerate Franco for so long? Why didn't you do something about it?”, the standard reply is “You can't image the horror of those years, and hopefully you will never have to live through anything like them”.
I
n an interview published in El Pais on Monday, British historian Paul Preston, who has written many good books about the Spanish Civil War and the people who took part in it on both sides, said he did not think that anyone in Spain today was capable of making that short step from hate to extermination. Que Dios le oiga (May God hear him), as the Spanish are wont to say. It will save future generations from having to contemplate the horror of mass graves like the one pictured below.
upport for José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero appears to be dwindling. In a stunning editorial, El País on Monday called on Zapatero to hold early elections, citing “his incapacity for management” and “the meagre results of the barely initiated reforms” but more so because “the impotence of a lame-duck legislature, augurs a further, irremediable deterioration that has to be cut short as soon as possible.”
“
If Rodríguez Zapatero really wants to offer one last service for his country he should do it by abandoning office as soon as possible while recognising the urgent need for our government to restore credibility that has been lost. Spaniards from all walks of life, along with Socialist voters in particular, would appreciate this.”
he prime minister is said to be considering whether to call early elections and will probably make that decision in September if the economic situation doesn’t improve. He wants to ensure that Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and his team are prepared by then to unveil their manifesto and embark on a gruelling campaign to convince voters that the Socialists should remain in power with another captain at the helm. Spain’s unbearable economic and political situations have pushed the Zapatero government into a corner. But, let’s face it, the prime minister is not the only one to blame.
E
urope’s debt crisis buoyed by the clashing opinions among EU leaders on how to keep Greece from falling into default has less than calmed fears that contagion will spread to Spain and Italy . The results of Friday’s stress tests on the banks all took a toll on the Spanish market this week. In Rome last week, lawmakers from all the parties came together quickly and pushed through a series of stringent austerity measures to reduce the national deficit by €70 billion in three years. It was the fastest approval of a budget bill in modern Italian history – a sign to investors and fellow EU members that the country is ready to knuckle down, even though the markets also continue to punish Italy .
U
nfortunately in Spain , the story is entirely different. There is no commitment among the parties to work together. The Socialists have been able to pass a string of much needed belttightening measures with the slight majority they hold in parliament or with lukewarm support from minor parties, such as the Basque Nationalists (PNV) or the Canaries Coalition (CC). Unlike Italy, the opposition in Spain has utterly rejected sitting down with the Socialists for some give-and-take bargaining to keep the Spanish economy from tanking. Mariano Rajoy and some of the other Partido Popular (PP) hardliners are focused on only one thing – their immediate rise to power following Zapatero’s early
withdrawal from government. At this stage, the PP is keeping its economic and social plans under wraps. But when they are made public, they surely won’t contain any surprises. Rajoy knows that if the PP wins the next general elections, he will have to continue on the same bitter course of cutbacks, restraint and thriftiness – harsher measures will have to be implemented, but he won’t be telling the voters that any time soon.
F
ollowing the Socialist defeat during the local and regional elections on May 24th, The Financial Times warned about the dangers of calling elections in Spain and insisted that the PP work more closely with the Zapatero government to send “clarity” to overseas investors. According to the FT, the government has done well in implementing reforms and needs more time to conclude its work.
T
here are some inside the Socialist Party who are wondering whether early elections would help the country – one of the most vocal being José María Barreda, the Castilla-La Mancha party boss who lost his regional premier post in May to María Dolores de Cospedal of the PP. But it isn't so hasty. Under the law, 50 days will have to pass between the time the prime minister dissolves parliament and the date of the appointment at the ballot box. In 1982, Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo called early elections in August, which were held the following October 28 and swept Felipe González into power.
T
here is a general lack of confidence in Zapatero and his team, but there is no indication that confidence will improve should Rajoy and the PP win the elections. At the same time, the general discontent over corruption, a government in disarray and unemployment is being reflected in the growing social protest movements that have taken society by surprise. The May 15th Movement is not keen on welcoming a conservative government, whose party is engulfed in a wave of corruption investigations. Should the PP win, social conflicts will only be magnified.

This is a story of a female smoker who had been smoking more than thirty a day for thirty years. Carol and her partner Richard, lived right here on the Costa Del Sol and, like most of us, they spent time watching English TV. On one particular day an article on the Richard & Judy Show reported on a new method of quitting the habit that instead of being a nicotine substitute, such as Nicorette gum or patches, or some sort of chemical that one swallowed that possibly gave suicidal tendencies, or hypnotherapy that seems to have a very low success rate, this was medically proven and yet a noninvasive smoking cessation therapy that apparently had a 90% success rate. More encouraging still was the equally positive coverage that evening on the 6 o’clock BBC News which interviewed two sceptical journalists who had had the treatment themselves and both
agreed that it did indeed remove the addiction instead of trying to replace it. Carol and Richard decided to go ahead and have the treatment and it seemed the reports were right. Neither of them suffered any withdrawal symptoms or cravings whatsoever. The addiction had truly been removed as Bioresonance therapy cancels the charge that nicotine has over the body. Months later they felt that this was something that all smokers should at least have the opportunity to try. And so ‘Stop Smoking In Spain’ was born. Here are a couple of exsmokers’ typical comments: “Well here I am, one year on and still have not touched a cigarette and indeed have no desire to ever do so for the rest my life. I suffered no cravings whatsoever, which quite honestly amazed me”. And:
Hi Carol, I'm completely free! I coughed continuously for an hour after leaving you and a bit of junk being ejected from my chest since, very mild reactions really. I've a few urges to smoke every now and again, but nothing I would call a true craving and it gets easier every day. I don't recall thinking about cigarettes at all today until I got your follow up email. Completely free of it in one treatment. It really is a miracle.I've been giving out your number to lots of colleagues and patients. I hope they book up. Thank You. Dr Luke Maddocks Want to know more? BORNOS (e secret garden) Arcos de la Frontera is now on the tourist map – but don’t forget to include nearby Bornos on your itinerary....it well deserves a visit.
S
ituated on the ancient trade route between Jeréz and Ronda, Bornos’s whitewashed houses and sandstone monumental buildings reach almost to the very edge of a wide tranquil lake, giving this sedate little town an almost Italianate appearance. And Italians have had some influence here, as we shall see. Bornos has a surprisingly large number of architectural and cultural treasures for a small agricultural town, and its bustling and friendly atmosphere, good scattering of bars and restaurants, plus the bonus of an after-lunch stroll alongside the lake, make a day trip here well worth while.
domination that the place really took off and the street plan of Al-Bornuz was laid out; however, they would enjoy only a few hundred years of peace in their corner of Al-Andalus before the army of Fernando III recovered the town for Christianity. Today there is little tangible evidence of its
Moorish past, for with true reconquista zeal the old Arab buildings were either demolished or, more often, remodelled to suit the new regime.
T
here are many fine buildings from the subsequent centuries however, all worth exploring, but Bornos’ jewel in the crown is the Castillo del Fontanar (Palacio de los Ribera). Originally a Moorish fortress it was converted into an opulent palace in the 16th century, and the grandeur of its past is still evident even in its partially restored condition.

the magnificent Plateresque style galleries, and he even transported a marble fountain from Italy which still graces the patio, the water gurgling out today as cheerfully as it did in the 16th century. n 1530 the Duke also instigated the construction of a magnificent loggia as he needed somewhere to display his large collection of Roman sculptures. The loggia, inspired by Bavente’s Belvedere in the Vatican, is still there, sadly the niches which once displayed the statues are now empty.

Out and About - but watch your speed! A recent change in the speed limit between la Cañada and Fuengirola means that the speed limit is now down from 100kph to 80kph. Readers will want to know that there are apparently four unmarked police cars which are supposed to stop you if you are speeding. If they catch you on the camera what they do is transfer details to a new computer site. It’s then up to you to check the website regularly – which, say the
authorities, means you can make sure you have not been caught. But if you don’t check then, after a few months, the police can take the speeding fine directly from your bank account, by which time they will have added an extra fine for nonpayment of a fine you did not know you had! Cars 2
L
by John Lasseter Voices by Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Eddie Izzard, Emily Mortimer Star racing car Lightning McQueen (Wilson) and his best pal, tow-truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), head overseas to compete in the first ever World Grand Prix to slug it out with the world’s fastest car to find out who is the best. But the road to the championships inevitably is not smooth. It’s not just the potholes and detours. Mater gets caught up in international espionage and is trapped between trying to help his pal while, at the same time, taking
part in a secret mission headed by British super spy Finn McMissile (Michael Caine). It’s a rollercoaster romp from the guys at mighty Pixar, home of Toy Story, and generally improves on the first in the franchise. And as the last Harry Potter installment storms the box office, it’s also a welcome alternative for mums and dads with younger children, who are likely to find the trials of Harry and co too terrifying. Michael Caine
has great fun voicing McMissile, and he is ably assisted by sidekick Holley Shiftwell (Mortimer). The spotlight moves off Lightning and on to lowly Mater, who gets mistaken for a top US agent with secret information about an evil mastermind. The bad guys are out to sabotage industrialist Miles Axelrod (Izzard), who has developed a clean-burning, no pollution fuel, because they want the world to stick to petrol. So there’s a
firm “green” message underpinning the action, in which the cars race in Japan, Italy and the UK, backed up by the spy hijinks. It’s not going to be on the top ten list of Pixar productions – and the mini-film at the beginning about the Toy Story gang setting up a holiday for Ken and Barbie will set fans yearning for another follow-up – but it’s a full throttle family fun cartoon for all the family.

t is a strange thing about movies that once you have seen a film with a particular actor taking a key role, it is difficult to imagine how the film could possibly have been made any other way. I’m not talking about remakes, a re-hash of the film with a completely different cast, I´m talking about finding the back story to a film’s final cast list and discovering that someone else was originally considered for the role. ast week I sat down to watch one of my favourite action thrillers, Enemy of the State. The main character is played by Will Smith and he plays it so well, that I was a bit shocked to discover that Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson had both been considered for the role prior to Will being offered it. With either of them at the helm, Enemy of the State would have been a very different film. The question is, would I have liked it more? ade in 1998, the film is still fresh, still has edge and the acting, editing and direction are fantastic. Yes, there are some very sweeping assumptions made about spy satellite capabilities and the efficiencies of the U.S. National Security Agency’s ability to watch our every move but essentially the film is credible. ill Smith plays successful attorney Robert Dean who is fighting cases against the mob with covert camera action during the day, while he spends his evenings at home ignoring his wife’s constant berating over the loss of individual freedoms due to C.C.T.V. and state controlled satellite imagery. Meanwhile, the government of the day is trying to implement a carte blanche security bill that will pave the way for even more intrusive and less controlled monitoring of U.S. citizens daily activities. Unfortunately for Robert, he soon finds himself the innocent victim of a high level security operation when he is unwittingly given an incriminating piece of video that could cause the death knell for the new security legislation. s a group of rogue National Security Agency officers start to hunt Robert down and his

life stops being his own, he finally wakes up to the fact that he has something that they want. Sacked from his job and with all his credit cards mysteriously cancelled, Robert is determined to restore balance and harmony to his life. Angry at the realisation of how powerless he is against unseen technology that can track his every move, he then finds himself put in the frame for a murder that he didn’t commit. To even up his chances, Robert teams up with experienced government dodger Brill, played by the mega-actor Gene Hackman. If you have seen Enemy of the State, you’ll know that he plays the part superbly, with just the right mix of cunning and paranoia that is likely to have kept him ’under the radar’ for years as the plot requires. So would you be surprised to have seen Sean Connery in the role of Brill? It nearly happened apparently. ack to the story, Brill reluctantly takes Robert under his wing, imparting some of his counter espionage tricks to try to keep the persistent agents from their tails. Ultimately the duo are caught and this time it is Robert’s quick thinking and sharp talking that give the two heroes a chance of the freedom they both are looking for. Pitching the highly organised, corrupt and heavily armed agents against a highly organised, corrupt and heavily armed mob boss, Robert carefully orchestrates a scenario where he lets the two sides assume that each has what the other wants and then hey presto, they shoot the hell out of each other, leaving Robert cowering but un-shot under the table. s the Feds move in to mop up the mess, Robert is free to hand over his video, implicating the bad guys and allowing his life to return to normal. Brill on the other hand, is free now to move on as well, although he chooses to do so ‘off grid’, as he has become accustomed to doing. o, Will Smith and Gene Hackman or Mel Gibson and Sean Connery? I vote for the first option.

Within your personal relationships you will feel an urge to take a leap of faith as there are a lot of emotional upheavals taking place this week. Make sure you follow through and bring about the situations that allow your dreams to flourish into fruition. There could be powerful temptations to test your integrity; honour and level of commitment, so make sure that your words match your actions - if you promise something make sure you can deliver. There is an underlying restlessness within that is smouldering and lingering beneath the surface - it may feel like it is following you around and you just can’t shake it off. There is an urge to spread your wings and this is leaving you with big decisions to make and an urge to create a serious change to your fortune. Steps being taken now and plans being put into place are for the long haul, including inner preparation, so do not expect it to happen overnight. Beware, Gemini, as there are possibly incredible opportunities around you at the moment that can be easily missed due to your mind being made up in a certain area. The feelings and opinions of the past may not be real, true or valid any longer and this is especially true when it comes to close relationships where you could be acting out of habit or guilt instead of free choice. Try not to limit yourself this week and be open to receive the good fortune coming your way. It is time to have some fun, take a break and remember how to play once more. A new day is dawning for you that will start a phase that will last for the next six months. In order to maximise on the changes that are occurring it will require you to face some hidden fears and make yourself more vulnerable than usual. This means risking yourself and stepping out into the spotlight if you have to. Nobody knows you are there unless you make them aware. You are focused on finding out answers and solutions and this is the key to progression. Talk is cheap and you know that you are going to be required to act to ensure that others realise that you are serious in your intentions - it is time to follow through. This is a practical week when it is time to let go of the past but learn from what has happened. Sometimes things break apart so that something greater can be built in its place. A feeling of freedom is felt as a change of scenery or lifestyle is preventing you from remaining trapped in the routine and ruts of the daily grind. There are possible powerful surges of feelings and emotions, raw sensuality and passion mixed with a spice of intuition that is causing a whole mix to occur within. As you are so emotionally driven right now, make sure that you get to the heart or truth of the matter, when any disagreements or misunderstandings occur.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
Monkfish are plentiful at this time of year. As we look for lighter meals in the hot weather, this dish is an ideal choice. This week’s recipe is by Ian Wooldridge, Head Chef at Kimbridge Farm, near Romsey.
MONKFISH CASSEROLE Ingredients:
(Serves 4)
● 1 large onion, finely chopped ● 1 red pepper, de-seeded & chopped ● Olive oil ● 2 cloves of garlic, minced or very finely chopped ● 3 tomatoes, peeled, de-seeded & chopped ● 2 tsp of paprika ● 250ml of good fish stock (use a whole cube if using) ● 125ml of white vermouth
● 4 bay leaves ● Peel of half an orange ● ½ tsp of saffron threads ● 150gms of cream cheese ● Salt & black pepper 250gms raw peeled king prawns ● 4 monkfish fillets, about 175gms (6oz) each (make sure all membrane is removed) ● Handful of fresh parsley, chopped
Directions 1. Start by frying the onion and red pepper with a little olive oil until soft in a large pan or skillet. Add the garlic, tomatoes and then the paprika. Cook slowly down to a thick paste. 2.Now introduce the stock, slowly mixing in. Add the vermouth, bay leaves and orange peel. Simmer for 10 minutes. Pour a tablespoonful of hot water over the saffron in a cup and leave to soak. 3. Whilst the saffron is soaking, boil the fish stock mixture for 5 minutes to
concentrate the flavours. 4. Now add the saffron liquid along with the cream cheese to the pan. Season with pepper and a little salt. Stir in the prawns and then nestle the monkfish fillets into the stew. 5. Poach the fish by simmering for 7 to 10 minutes with the pan covered. Check that the fish is cooked through. Garnish with the parsley. Serve with new potatoes and green beans or with rice and chunks of bread.

Happy families Two weeks ago we had a look at the members of the immediate family and, as promised, this week we are going to talk about the more extended family. However, first I must apologise. In that column I said that el yerno is the son-in-law, which it is. I also said that la yerna is the daughter-in-law. While this is true in South America, where I learned much of my Spanish, it is more usual in Spain to use la nuera for a daughter-in-law. So, sorry for any confusion caused. Now back to the all those people who turn up for weddings, funerals or to visit you if you are lucky enough to live in sunny Spain! Un primo is a male cousin and una prima - a female cousin Un tío - an uncle una tía - an aunt Un sobrino - a nephew una sobrina - a niece When it comes to the step family : El padrastro is the step father La madrastra - the step mother El hermanastro - the step brother La hermanastra - the step sister El hijastro - the step son La hijastra - the step daughter If your family stretches to four generations you will have : bisabuelos - great grandparents El bisabuelo - the great grandfather La bisabuela - the great grandmother Los bisnietos are the great grandchildren El bisnieto - the great grandson La bisnieta - the great grand daughter And somewhere among the throng you are bound to come across el padrino - the godfather and la madrina - the godmother Ya está - that's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie And remember my latest book, The Third Twelve Shortcuts to Spanish, is now available from the usual outlets or will be available to download from my website by the end of this week Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. THE DIET THAT WORKS FOR CELEBS
Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip
Just look at her now! The pictures on the right are of actress Pauline Quirke before and after her 500 calories-a-day diet. And didn’t she do well? Pauline Quirke has shed a third of her body weight after doctors told her she was 'severely obese' and that one of her hips had worn away because of the weight on it. Seven months later and a massive 6st 6Ibs lighter, 51year-old light as a feather Pauline is now 13st and a 'new woman'. The TV actress followed the 500 calorie-a-day Lighter Life diet in which meals are swapped for shakes, soups and low calorie snack bars put together in food packs. To go on the diet, you need to have a health check and medical approval, then
attend counselling sessions every week. Those going on the programme need to have medical approval and have to have a health check every month. “I hadn't weighed myself for many, many years. Then just before Christmas, I got on the scales and it said 19st 6lbs. I was so shocked,” she told Woman magazine. Miss Quirke, who is now appearing in TV soap Emmerdale as Hazel Walsh, added that she was determined to get to her target weight of 11stone.
Miss Quirke, who is now the face of the brand, said: 'I've never been hungry. The thing they're strict about is the whole counselling thing. Once a week we have our group support sessions. So if you're wavering a bit, you know you're not alone.' The diet has raised concerns because, while it includes all the daily recommended protein, minerals and vitamins, it only provides a quarter of the suggested daily calorie intake for women. This means the body has to use stored fat for energy. Ms Quirke admitted that she had
previously lost weight two years ago but put it back on after quitting her diet.
Yes, you should be proud! Pauline Quirke before (left) and after (right)
"I lost 3st and remember looking at myself in the mirror after slipping into a jacket that I hadn't fitted into for a decade," she said. "I could look at my reflection for the first time in years and think, ‘This is the real me.’ But then I made the foolish mistake of going off the diet and slowly the weight crept back. This time it is for good, I'm never going back. Although I haven't told anyone apart from my family about my diet until
now, a few people have commented I look slimmer. A compliment like that tastes better than any meal. I want to be able to wear nice clothes and feel happy about the way I look." She said she had cried when she could get back into jeans that she hadn’t been able to wear for years. The actress will be renewing her wedding vows this summer after husband Steve, 53 – with whom she
has two children Emily, 26, and Charlie, 16 – said of her new look: “You look fantastic. I wish I could marry you all over again.” After Birds of a Feather ended in 1998 Miss Quirke starred in the acclaimed drama The Sculptress about a woman convicted of killing her mother and sister. She has since appeared in The Bill, Cold Blood, and in the drama series Missing.
or Another Royal wedding Why Seven? Tacky what? But this time it is going to be a private affair when Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne and equestrian Mark Phillips gets married to her rugby playing fiancé Mike Tindall at Holyroodhouse which stands at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and is the Queen’s official residence in Scotland.
When asked why they had called their daughter Harper Seven, David Beckham revealed that it had little to do with the lucky shirt number he had worn while playing for Manchester United, which is what most people thought. The choice of names is rooted in the fact that wife Victoria’s favourite book is the powerful “To Kill A Mocking Bird” written by Harper Lee which deals with racism she observed in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, while a young girl. Oddly enough she was known not to care a jot about fashion while studying law at the all-girl college of Huntington, Montgomery, USA but did develop her love of writing. Said to be
almost autobiographical, the main tomboy character Scout is, like Lee herself, the daughter of a small town attourney. Of his daughter’s other name, Seven he said that it was chosen to signify the seven wonders of the world, and the seven colours of the rainbow. Previous reports had said that the names were based on their sons’ favourite characters on the TV. Of having another girl in the house, he said that he was beginning to get used to all the pinks and lilacs around and that having a daughter was “a whole new experience” adding that her arrival into the world was “incredible”.
One could say: “Only in America” but this sculpture of Marilyn Monroe standing eight metres high on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile takes some beating. The statue, supposed to look like her appearance in The Seven Year Itch when she’s trying to cool down by standing over an American subway grating, was made by artist J. Seward Johnson and will be displayed at Pioneer Court until next year. Most comments from those who have seen it have not been favourable and there have already been complaints about tourists taking “voyeuristic” photos of her “Bridgets” up her skirt. Liked, it is not!
It was previously assumed that the pair would tie the knot in Canongate Kirk which is on the Royal Mile and is where the Queen herself worships whilst staying at Holyrood. But it was announced yesterday (Tuesday) that the venue is to be the palace instead. The pair have been together for seven years after meeting through Zara’s cousin, Prince Harry in a bar in Sydney,
Australia, during the 2003 Rugby World Cup. The couple are set to invite around 20 guests from Sydney, it has been revealed.
Zara, who is the Queen’s granddaughter, made some good friends when she stayed in Oz during her gap year in 2003, and is keen to include them. Apparently top of the list is James Erskine who hosted Zara while she was in Australia, the Sydney
Morning Herald reported. ‘‘They are a lovely family and having been to Zara’s brother’s wedding, we know what to expect. It promises to be a wonderful event,’’ said James adding, ‘‘Zara made quite a few friends here during her time with us, and they are friendships she has maintained. Sydney will be well-represented.’’

NHS advice on water is 'nonsense'
e perils of teen binge drinking Too much booze can affect performance in school and sports, and girls are more vulnerable, according to a new study.
NHS advice to drink six to eight glasses of water a day is "nonsense," according to an article by Scottish GP Dr Margaret McCartney which appeared in this week's British Medical Journal. The NHS Choices website advises people to try to drink about six to eight glasses of water (or other fluids) a day to prevent dehydration, but Dr McCartney said there was no high quality evidence to support the claim and went on to describe the recommendation as "not only nonsense, but thoroughly debunked nonsense." She said reports which state that drinking more water can actually improve children's concentration and mental ability have not been confirmed by research studies. She also pointed out that in many cases, the message is promoted by bottled water companies. The French food giant
Danone, owner of Volvic and Evian bottled water brands, recommends drinking 1.5 to two litres of water a day as “the simplest and healthiest hydration advice you can give,” and also claims that “even mild dehydration plays a role in the development of various diseases.” Dr McCartney said that while drinking more water may help people with some conditions such as recurrent kidney stones, the existing evidence that this can prevent other
diseases is conflicting. She concluded: “There are many organisations with vested interests who would like to tell doctors and patients what to do. We should just say no.”
drinkers and non-drinkers was less than among the girls. The researchers suggested that hormonal or metabolic differences between boys and girls, or the fact that girls' brains develop up to two years earlier than boys, could account for these gender differences. They went on to say that drinking-related impairments in spatial working memory can affect the following – driving; figural reasoning, such as geometry; sports, specifically remembering and enacting complex plays; reading
maps, and remembering directions or routes. A spokesman for the UK's Alcohol Concern said the study demonstrated why reducing binge drinking among young people must be an urgent priority. He said: "We have to also look at intervening as early as possible so that when teenagers go to A&E as a result of drinking or are in trouble with the police or at school, they are provided with the right advice and support to reduce drinking and make healthier choices."

Norm Garnsey Here we go again and it’s only July! A week ago a friend went to his door to answer the bell and was told that they (two men in red t-shirts) were there to check the gas system. He replied that everything in his apartment was electric to get rid of them. They then insisted that he had a gas fire, to which he agreed, but pointed out that his current certificate was valid until 2015. They then argued that
Fred Rotteveel I read your article about the lack of water in la Carreta and I fully agree with your last remark: FIX IT NOW! Even the lorry to bring water to the houses is broken down and the private man who delivers water in his tanker lorry, takes the water from the
Harold Rice Friday now and not a drop of town water (or sign of their tanker). We had some water from the guy with the big green tractor as he filled a neighbour’s tanks up who has eight holidaymakers staying and had 6000 litres (he will not sell less than a full tanker load!) left over which he put into ours. It was crazy having to pay for 8000 litres and only having
by email the supply tube was faulty and that it would cost 80 Euros to replace. At this point he told them to go away and that he would contact Repsol. This comment was followed by some abuse as they left. Your comments some weeks ago highlighted yet again this problem but, is there no real way of stopping it since it’s mostly expats and the elderly that are confronted with this problem?
Editor says: We have had a report from Age Care that this has happened to someone they have dealt with too. Luckily they were on hand to help as the elderly people in that scam would have lost a lot of money had it not been for them. The police were involved in that incident but it would appear they really don’t want to get involved. It would seem that no matter how many times we put this in The News, someone gets done. Personally, I think they should be done for fraud.
La Carreta, Coin acequía! As The News reaches many people, I would suggest that The News collects the signature of all who suffer from the lack of water, and at the end we can hand all those signatures over at the Ayuntamiento, the mayor or
whoever is responsible. Do you think The News can organise such a petition? Editor says: Your neighbour, Harold Rice has got one going already and we are in constant contact with the Town Hall.
Coin tank capacity for 2000 litres. He told me it was "well water" but it turns out its acequia water (irrigation water from a ditch), but at least we now have the privilege of flushing the loos again! I have also seen other neighbours filling up plastic water bottles from the acequia to flush their loos as not all of us have tanks in our gardens to deposit water
into. We have now arranged, thanks to other neighbours that do have water, that I will continue to take water from their well with my little blue 750 litre tanker and keep the holidaymakers topped up as well as ourselves. What a bloody fiasco, at this rate people will be going down with dysentry or worse! Editor says: I saw the council tanker bombing along the road on Monday morning but when I phoned Mr Rice, they still had not been delivering to these people. At the time of going to press, he reported a dribble of town water coming through to his property although others are still without any water at all - from town or tanker!

Happy Birthday Neptune T
his week marks a very historic milestone in Astronomy, the planet Neptune has made one revolution around the Sun since its discovery in 1846! Neptune takes 164 Earth years to make one orbit around the Sun so if you were born on Neptune on the day that it was discovered then you would be one Neptune year old today. Happy Birthday!
N
eptune is the 8th planet in the Solar system and the farthest planet from the Sun. ‘What about Pluto?’ I hear you say, well poor old Pluto is farther away from the Sun but since 2006 it is no longer considered to be a planet. So since 2006 there are officially only eight planets in the Solar System not nine. These are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
S
ince ancient times people knew that there were five planets that could be easily seen in the night sky – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn had been observed for thousands of years. But with the advancement in mathematics and the coming of the telescope age astronomers could calculate that there was a discrepancy in Saturn’s orbital path and it was believed that another planet must be exerting a gravitational effect upon it. And so the hunt began to discover the new planet. Uranus was eventually recognised as the 7th planet in 1783 although it had been spotted much earlier by several astronomers but nobody had considered it a planet.
E
arly in the 19th century, astronomers noticed the position of Uranus was also a little ‘off’. Sometimes it seemed to speed up in its orbit, and sometimes it slowed down. This strange motion, they realised, might be the gravitational effect of a more distant and undiscovered planet. Newton’s law of gravitation gave astronomers the mathematical tools to determine the position of this undiscovered planet, but the number crunching required was formidable in this era before computers and calculators, and the only help was a good brain and a lot of pencils and paper.
I
n England, a young mathematician called John Couch Adams took on the problem in 1843 when he was still an undergraduate. Adams took his solution to the Astronomer Royal, George Airy, and suggested an English astronomer should begin searching for the planet based on his calculations. Adams was a
quiet and unpersuasive young man, and the powerful and formidable Airy never took him seriously.
A
t the same time in France another mathematician Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier also calculated the position of the new planet and published his results in 1845 predicting the planet to be very close to the position predicted by Adams. George Airy read Leverrier’s report while still ignoring Adams, and assigned the task of searching for the planet to the methodical and plodding James Challis, who began a fruitless search for the planet without even a decent star map to help him.
L
everrier approached French astronomers and begged them to search for the planet using his calculations but he too was ignored. So Leverrier wrote to German astronomers in Berlin to ask them for help. The Germans were convinced and gave the job to two astronomers Johann Galle and graduate student Heinrich Louis d’Arrest. The two used a 9-inch refractor telescope and newly published star maps and found the planet on the very first night of searching September 23rd 1846, and confirmed its existence the next night. Just like that!
D
espite the French objecting that it should be named Leverrier, the new planet was officially christened Neptune on December 29th 1846 keeping with the tradition of naming the planets after Greek or Roman Gods. Neptune was the god of the sea along with Poseidon.
T
oday, despite the first sighting of the planet by the German duo, the quiet John Couch Adams and Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier are credited as the discoverers of Neptune. For more info go to www.kencampbell.info

LA 'Carmageddon' ends early An expected 'Carmageddon' on most of Los Angeles' busiest freeways came to an end on Monday as roadworks were completed 16 hours ahead of schedule. Most of LA's bustling highways were left desolate, many opting to avoid the predicted carnage. A 53-hour shutdown of a 10-mile stretch of one of the region's most critical freeways began on Saturday. The work involved taking down the Mulholland Drive bridge over Interstate 405 (pictured).
Pedrosa happy to win so soon Dani Pedrosa (Honda) won the German MotoGP at the Sachsenring, beating Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) and Australian championship leader Casey Stoner Stoner through the final curves was a classic piece of action. MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo also clipped another four points off Casey Stoner's
Repsol rider Dovizioso and Gresini's Simoncelli lost touch with the leaders during the second half of the race, and were later caught by Lorenzo's teammate Ben Spies. A last turn
The other battle was for seventh place and another final turn showdown decided that, with Rizla Suzuki's Alvaro Bautista winning a thrilling battle against factory Ducati riders Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi respectively. Rossi had started from a lowly 16th on the grid but quickly made up places and joined the battle for seventh after ten laps – the three of them swapping positions for the remainder of the race. Defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo and current championship leader Casey Stoner have confirmed that they will not take part in the Japanese Grand Prix in October.
Spain’s Dani Pedrosa rode a superb race to take the German MotoGP
second victory of the season. The race was full of action and by far the most exciting for some time, Jorge Lorenzo’s last lap was just superb, and his dice with
2011 title lead with his perfectly executed last-turn pass on the Honda rider. The race was split into three separate battles, all equally exciting. Third
attempt to re-pass Dovizioso for fourth saw Simoncelli run wide and Assen winner Spies snatch fifth from the Italian, (still not sure what the leg kick was all about though!).
The earthquake and tsunami disaster in the country in March caused the race to be postponed until October 2nd. However, the Motegi circuit due to host the race lies just over 100km from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant and both Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner refuse to race there.
a complete rebuild before arriving in Spain earlier this year. The event is becoming something of tradition
since it enables those members who are remaining here for the summer to enjoy a short run followed by a leisurely “bring and share” lunch, avoiding the strongest sunshine and keeping costs down by catering for one another.
The day started at the Venta Sol y Sombra (better known to long-standing members as their former meeting place Hoyo19) just
outside Fuengirola. From there the cars drove to to La Cala (being careful to observe the newly instituted 80 kph speed limit on that stretch of the N340!) and thence through the inland campo in a loop which brought them out towards Mijas. Lunch was a leisurely affair with a variety of dishes that any venta would have been envious of, served on a shady terrace with a welcome breeze and overlooking a wonderful view of the coast. The club is taking a break during August but activities will start up again in September – take a look at the website www.solclassiccarclub.net to keep up to date with the latest news on “Chatter” the website blog. Written by Jean Joss
British car maker Vauxhall has produced the first-ever electric vehicle that can travel 300 miles without needing to be charged. The Ampera runs for the first 40 miles on its electric battery alone. After that it switches to petrol, with the fuel powering the engine. This means drivers will never be stranded once the charge has run out, as happens in other electric vehicles which stop once the battery is depleted. It is the first car on the market to do this. Motorists driving up to 40 miles a day will only ever use green energy to power the car. This is also different from most hybrids which run on both electric batteries and petrol. Vauxhall said that running the car would cost around a fifth of the price of
Classics chill out at home Sol Classic Car Club members Jim and Charlene Sutton hosted the summer “at home” last weekend at their home in Valtocado. They are the proud owners of “Doris” a bright red MGB Roadster dating from 1978 which was shipped back to the UK from California for
Longer lasting Electric car a first for Vauxhall a petrol or diesel vehicle. Charging the car is estimated to cost around 40 pence to £1 each time. If charged each day, this would cost up to £7 a week. Its entertainment and interior display system also uses 50 per cent less energy than standard cars. The government is also currently offering various incentives to Britons buying electric cars. Owners receive direct grants of £5,000 if they buy them, and they are exempt from having to pay car tax or congestion charges. The car will hit British showrooms in March of next year, starting at £28,995. It will come with a charging cable that can be plugged into a normal household power outlet and will take around four hours to fully charge up.

Skills Improvement at Lauro Golf Bowling Club
Darren Clarke became the 3rd Irish winner of a major championship in 13 months, and lady luck and the weather played their part.
At the invitation of Terry Morgan, Club Captain, John Carr, Coordinator for Malaga province Instructors Group, ran a further morning of intensive training for bowlers at Lauro Golf BC in July. The weather was hot and challenging, but participants full of enthusiasm.
At last, at age 42, Darren Clarke has won his elusive first major championship. Did he gain his momentum from watching his friends and countrymen Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy win the last two United States Opens? Perhaps the impetus came from his European Tour victory earlier this year at Majorca, the 15th of his career? Or perhaps it was the work last week with the sports psychologist Bob Rotella, which Clarke doesn’t like to talk about? Whatever it was, Clarke became the third golfer from Northern Ireland to win a major, and the oldest player to win the British Open since Roberto de Vicenzo of Argentina, who was 44 when he won in 1967. Putting like his life depended on it Clarke closed with a round of 70 and a five-under-par 275 total, to win by three strokes over 41-year-old Phil Mickelson and 27year-old Dustin Johnson,

title. But then he was hit with the news that would tear his world apart and redefine his life. His wife Heather was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 2006, leaving Clarke to bring up his two young boys, Tyrone and Conor, alone.
Clarke finished second in the Open at Royal Troon in 1997 and was third in 2001, while in 2000 he beat Tiger Woods, already well on his way to greatness, to win the World Match Play
Clarke accepted a wildcard to play on his fifth European Ryder Cup team at the K Club in Dublin Just a month after Heather’s death. What followed was one of the most emotional
C.O.G.S. Play Santanta in the summer heat Teeing off at 10.00hrs to beat the summer sun, it was still uncomfortably hot. The course was, as always, in very good condition, but I often wonder where they get there pricing from, especially in the present financial situation. Once again I would like to thank the management and staff for their warm welcome at The Bistro. And Andy and Dave for all the help they always give me. The chicken curry was much appreciated by all the members, thanks to Mike and Andrea.
When Amy Mickelson began her battle with breast cancer more than two years ago, he and Phil became even closer friends. In the intervening years, Clarke moved his young family from London back to Portrush in Northern Ireland, described by his mother in the wake of victory at Royal St George's as "the best decision of his life". The two boys on the morning of the final round were in fact playing golf at Royal Portrush. One day to follow in dad’s footsteps perhaps?
The winning team prize was won by Dell Allwood, Brian Millwood, Russell Wood and Adam Robinson with 82 points. Nearest the pin hole 2 Dave Haworth, Nearest the pin in two hole 11 Ian Thorne and Longest drive hole 10 Dave Haworth. The winner of the day with 35 points was at 72 years of age (you must be joking!) Joe King, well done Joe. You would not think Joe was his age, as he looks younger than me and I’m only thirty! The second position was the closest we have ever had
Terry’s Par three competition was as follows. Winner of the day John Bamber with 11 points. Nearest the pin hole 7 Ian Thorne, hole 12 Mick Rhodes and hole 16 Del Allwood. Well done to all. I would like on behalf of all the members
to thank Terry Birtles for arranging the par three competition and supplying the prizes. Well I’m over half way through my year as Captain, how time flies. And our next outing is on the 13th August 10.00hrs at Rio Real. If anybody would like to join us, pop into The Bistro and you will find the relevant phone numbers you require to play as a guest. You will be treated to a warm welcome and maybe a few beers afterwards. Report by Nig Bowler, Captain

UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee said: "It doesn't fit in the professional preparation for the biggest event of your life. In the end we are all aware that performance is number one. They can do the closing ceremonies." The Dutchman believes that if athletes were forced to stand for long periods during the ceremony it may be detrimental to their chances of success, while some will still be at training camps at the time of the curtain raiser. "They would not go shopping for eight hours before their biggest event so why would you be on your feet for that long?" he added.

The court handed suspended sentences ranging from six months to 20 months to the Zambian players connected with the scandal on Tuesday. The Manxman took his fourth stage win of the race and his 19th tour victory while Team Sky’s Ben Swift took sixth place in Montpellier. Thomas Voeckler comfortably held on to his yellow jersey as the tour headed into the second rest day on Monday. With the pre-stage threat of cross-winds and echelons failing to materialise, the transition stage allowed the team to recuperate after a tough final day in the Pyrenees. After the final 5km climb and descent that followed it was left to three men to contest the stage. The yellow jersey stayed on the shoulders of Voeckler after another gutsy ride, but Contador is looking strong.
"We're so happy about the title, now we're number one," said Japan captain Homare Sawa, who won the Golden Boot for top scorer in the tournament. "We know this is a great victory, we are bringing the gold medal home." Japan's previous best finish had been reaching the quarter-finals in 1995, and they had never beaten the United States in 25 meetings prior to Sunday's exciting final.

Their team is nicknamed 'Nadeshiko', after the pink plant used to personify the attributes of the ideal Japanese woman – neatness, resilience and loyalty. Although Japan went into the tournament ranked as the fourth best team in the world, few experts predicted they would be able to overcome the more powerful and experienced nations like the hosts and defending champions Germany, and the United States.
Heroes & Villains of the decade Fifa boss Sepp Blatter has been named the biggest "villain" of the past decade ahead of figures such as Simon Cowell and Tiger Woods. The Swiss president of football's governing body topped a poll for TV channel Syfy. Sporting "love rats" Ashley Cole (3), Woods (4) and Ryan Giggs (7) all figure in the top 10. A list of heroes was topped by US President Barack Obama. Behind President Obama in the hero list was runner-up David Beckham, followed by Prince William and Harry Potter author JK Rowling. The poll was commissioned to coincide with the launch of superhero series The Cape on Syfy.
At a news conference to mark his homecoming after his Open win, Darren Clarke unexpectedly donated his Open gold medal to the captain of the Royal Portrush Golf Club, Phillip Tweedie. Clarke won by three shots at Royal St George's to become only the second Northern Irishman to lift the Claret Jug. The 42-yearold said he wanted his medal to sit in the Royal Portrush trophy cabinet alongside the one won by Fred Daly in 1947.

Harper accuses India of bullying Recently retired Australian umpire Daryl Harper has accused India of "bullying", just days before the start of their Test series against England. Harper pulled out of his farewell Test this month after criticism from India players and a "lack of support" from the International Cricket Council. "I thought someone had to make a stand, so I did," said Harper. India said they had "no comment to offer" in reply to Harper's claims but he has been backed by the ICC.
