November 20th E-Day Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced last Friday that he had decided to bring the general election forward by four months – to be held on November 20th instead of in March next year. He told a press conference after the weekly Cabinet meeting that falling unemployment figures indicated that the foundations had been laid for the country's economic recovery and the moment had arrived to set a definite date for the election. It would be officially confirmed on September 26th. He said he had decided on November 20th because his government still had to approve some reform laws which were in the final stages of drafting. The PM's announcement put an end to months of speculation. The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has been calling for an early
election for months and its successes in the May 22nd regional and local elections only made it step up the pressure. Since then, several other parties have joined the PP's call but until early last week, Sr Zapatero continued to insist that he intended to let the government serve out its full term. He later said he

So, what are the basics in life that you can’t really do without? I would say they are in the first place water, because without it you cannot grow the food you need to eat, nor can you process any of the materials you need to build a shelter. Yes, you could possibly live under a tree, working your way round it to keep out of the sun but then, what makes that tree grow in the first place? Yep, good old water! So far so good, we would all agree that life without water is pretty much impossible. We also all know about the terrible shortages in Africa again that have been caused, basically, by a lack of water causing great hardship and death to thousands. now, on a much more local note and, of course it in no way compares to what is happening in Africa, some of the people who live out in the campo on la carreta, coin, have been without town water for six weeks now. We’ve had letters in The news about it in the last few weeks but nothing has been done. Well water has run dry and for those lucky enough to have holding tanks or ‘depositos’ for water, they ran out ages ago. So what has the local council have to say about it? They say that the pipes are full of ‘cal’. OK, so how come some of them are getting a dribble of water some days and not others? Also, so they say, the town tanker that should be supplying water to the tanks that there are has broken down. So how come I saw it going along the road the other day? Maybe the heat has been getting to my brain and it was a mirage? no I don’t think so either! So the words to the council are “FIX IT!” This is a basic right to the people that are paying for it. Oh, and by the way, if you don’t pay for it, they come and take your meter away!

National News Jobless numbers down again The Labour ministry reported another drop of 42,059 in the number of unemployed during July, continuing a downward trend that began in April. Since then just over 250,000 people have found jobs, and the total number of unemployed now stands at 4,079,742. However, when the number of unemployed people who do not claim dole for one reason or
another is added in, the real number stands at just over 4.8 million. Despite the steady drop in the past four months, the interannual balance is negative – with 171,164 more people out of work than in July last year.

1000s of women find violence justified The results of a survey presented by Health, Social Policy and Equality minister Leire Pajin on Tuesday shows that about 600,000 people – including 240,000 women – believe

Six countries finance Islamic communities
A most original campaign slogan Members of the Socialist candidate's election campaign team marked his 60th birthday last Thursday (July 28th) by presenting him with the campaign's t-shirt which proclaims “We can do it”. It was signed RbCb – the shorthand version of the surname favoured by Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. It may sound as if the candidate is cashing in on Barak Obama's successful campaign slogan – Yes we can – but a member of the team explained it goes back to the former deputy PM's days as a sprinter. He was a great admirer of Canada's 100 yards champion sprinter Harry Jerome whose slogan was “You can do it”. During his career as an athlete, Sr Rubalcaba always wore a t-shirt with that slogan on it.
Six Muslim countries are sponsoring Islamic communities in Spain basically with the objective of controlling them, but the funding is indiscriminate and often falls into the hands of radical Islamist organisations or unscrupulous individuals, according to a secret intelligence report. The report by the National Intelligence Centre (CNI), which was sent to the foreign, interior and defence ministers on May 16th, warns that the
financial aid provided by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Libya and Morocco to the 1.2 million Muslims living in Spain could “result in negative attitudes for peaceful coexistence, such as the creation of ghettos and parallel societies, Islamic courts and police systems outside the law, girls being taken out of school, forced marriages and so on." It said there is not enough control over the financial flow and the donor countries must be made
aware of the risks entailed in financing individual requests. To this end, top officials from the foreign and justice ministries have already visited Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman and will visit Saudi Arabia and Qatar in September after Ramadan ends. The Spanish government wants the Arab countries to fund only projects that have been submitted to and approved by the Islamic Commission of Spain (CIE), the official mediator.
Regions want to give back powers After a meeting between economy minister Elena Salgado and regional premiers last week to discuss a deficit-reduction programme and legislation to put a cap on regional spending, several regions governed by the Partido Popular suggested that a good way of saving money would be to return some of their powers to the central government. Murcia premier Ramon Luis Valcarcel said if his region
did not receive sufficient financing from Madrid, he would not hesitate to “renounce education and health” which required more financing than other areas. Other regional premiers added justice to the list. The government accused the Partido Popular of never having whole-heartedly supported decentralisation and of “denying the essence of the State of Autonomies (regional government)”.
Justice minister Francisco Caamaño said the regions could not return their powers because the transfer had been negotiated, signed, sealed and delivered. However, several legal experts said that such a “reversing of powers” was not forbidden by the Constitution. They claim it would be enough to reform certain pertinent statutes for the powers to be handed back.

Fire destroys cava warehouse
The police finally managed to evict the last few dozen “indignados” – members of the M-15 youth protest movement – from the Puerta del Sol and the Paseo del Prado without any serious incident early on Tuesday morning, a week after violent confrontations between the police and indignados outside Parliament. These led the police to claim that they in fact were the “indignant ones”. A spokesman for the Federal Union of Police (UFP) said his members were indignant, irritated, fed up and angry with the constant provocation from members of the M-15 movement “who spit on

Parliament. Cayo Lara insisted that his party was not trying to take over the movement, but was making the offer because the IU and M-15 shared many political objectives. He said he feared if the movement did not participate in parliament, it would eventually fade away.
A fire destroyed one warehouse and partly demolished another at the codorniu complex early Saturday morning, destroying hundreds of cases of cava (sparkling white wine) which were awaiting distribution. There were no human casualties. A spokesman for the company said the fire started at 2.30 am, apparently caused by a short circuit, and firemen were able to get it under control by 5 am. ief gambles away loot A man who allegedly robbed banks to finance his addiction to one-armed bandits was finally caught last week. Police said Ricardo Lopez, nicknamed El Patillas (sideburns) by the police, had robbed 29 banks since 2002. Last week they claimed he got away with €6,200 from a branch of the Santander bank and lost it all playing the one-armed bandits at an amusement arcade. Police went on to allege he had stolen some €300,000 over the years and spent it all on one-armed bandits. MADRID
Bullfighting 'an artistic discipline' The government last week transferred responsibility for bullfighting from the Interior ministry to the Ministry of Culture after recognising the spectacle as "an artistic discipline and cultural product". The move has delighted bullfighting organisations
who are keen to protect their livelihood but has enraged animal rights campaigners. A spokesman for Pacma, an anti-bullfighting political party, said the decision was "complete nonsense, a measure which sends us
back to the Middle Ages". Animal rights campaigners maintain bullfighting only survives because it is subsidised by the taxpayer. Attendances have been falling steadily for years, and opinion polls show that younger Spaniards prefer football, basketball,
motorbike and car racing. Last year, the Catalan regional parliament banned bullfighting, a move that led the Madrid regional government to announce it was awarding bullfighting legal protection locally, because of its cultural importance.

More maintenance-related accidents Nearly two thirds of road accidents caused by mechanical defects last year were tyre-related, according to a still unpublished study by the Spanish Foundation for Road Safety (Fesvial). A Fesvial spokesman said because of the economic crisis, many drivers were trying to save money by skimping on car maintenance, especially on new tyres, not realising just how dangerous worn tyres can be. He called for maintenancerelated campaigns, like the ones for using seat belts, which he said had been very successful.

YouTube film to curb FACTORY CLEARANCE! 2 single mattresses with base and legs people-smuggling The Australian government plans to post images of socalled boatpeople being turned away and sent back to Malaysia on YouTube, in an effort to deter asylum seekers. The footage will show boatpeople arriving at the country's offshore detention centre on Christmas Island, being put on board a plane to Malaysia and then arriving at camps in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Immigration officials said the aim is to demonstrate the futility of risking your life at sea, only to be put on
a plane to be flown back to Malaysia. Previously, the government has used dramatised videos of people in detention or losing their lives at sea to act as a deterrent. This is the first time that real asylum seekers have been filmed being expelled, although for security reasons their faces will be
pixelated. The footage will be posted in eight languages, targeting Iranians, Afghans, Sri Lankans and Iraqis in particular. The first boatload of asylum seekers expected to be sent back to Malaysia was intercepted on Sunday. They are to be processed on Christmas Island before being sent to Kuala Lumpur by plane.
25 bodies found on boat Italian coastguards have found the bodies of 25 men on a 15-metre boat crowded with refugees fleeing Libya, which landed on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa late on Sunday with 271 survivors on board. The bodies were found in the boat's engine room and media reports
said the men had apparently tried to escape but had been trapped by the numbers on board and probably been choked by engine fumes. The engine room was only accessible through a 50-centimetre 20-inch wide trap door from the deck. Most of the dead are believed to be from Somalia, Nigeria and
Ghana. Lampedusa is now the biggest gateway to the European Union for refugees from North Africa, with tens of thousands fleeing the war in Libya. The UN has estimated that one refugee in 10 never makes it, dying on the way from exposure, thirst, or from drowning when their boats capsize.

UK News What a rip off! Further to last week’s item here in The News about gas and electricity prices going up this month by as much as 18%, Centrica, owners of British Gas and one of the main providers of power in the UK has announced profits for the first half of 2011 of £1.3 billion. They point out that in fact their overall profits are down by 19% on the same period last year and that their gas operating profits are also down by 54%. British Gas on its own have declared profits of £270 million. So despite the
average household having to pay an average £190 per annum for their fuel once the price rises hit, they are happily telling their shareholders that their dividends will be rising by around 12%. Centrica said they will be investing £1.3 billion over the next year securing new energy sources. Much of the investment will not be within the UK – confirming that they will not be spending as much on UK gas due to a new government tax on oil and gas production in the North Sea which has
already cost Centrica £204 million in the first six months of this year. They have already closed down some of their operations there because of this new tax.. A government spokesman said that, despite the tax rises, gas production in the North Sea is still a “hugely profitable” business and that the companies are using the tax rise as an excuse to use other cheaper sources. Centrica also operate gas production in Trinidad.
She just couldn’t wait When a new, one-year-old seal pup called Togo arrived at St Andrew’s Aquarium, neighbouring harbour seal, Laurel, decided she just couldn’t wait to join him. Laurel, who weighs 19 stone and is 20-years-old scaled a four-foot-high metal fence within fifteen minutes of the animal park closing on Friday night and when staff arrived the following morning they could not understand how she had done it. However, we live in the modern age and CCTV had caught her as she scaled the fence and plopped down on the other side to join Togo who had arrived
on Thurday from Denmark. Laurel had used her front flippers to hoist herself up far enough until she just toppled over the top. John Mace, manager of St Andrews Aquarium, said: "We couldn't believe it when we came in on Saturday morning to find Laurel and Togo swimming around together. There was evidence that the fencing was slightly damaged, but when we watchedthe security camera footage we just couldn't believe what we were seeing. Laurel was clearly determined to get in to see Togo and obviously wasn't going to let metal security fencing stand in her way. We have been amazed by both her

strength and her tenacity." Togo was born at the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg, Denmark, and just celebrated his first birthday on Tuesday 19th July. Harbour seals are in steep decline in the UK and their endangered status means aquariums can only accept seals which have been born in another aquarium, a rare occurrence. Togo’s trip to Scotland is not his only international connection. Following a city-wide fundraising campaign in 2010 for international children’s charity UNICEF, the city of Esbjerg raised $1.6million for Togo, a West African country that borders Ghana. The Fisheries and Maritime Museum opted to name their newest pup Togo in honour of the city’s fundraising efforts. Charlotte Thöstesen commented, “We are very glad that Togo will keep his name. Then there will always be a link between him and the city of Esbjerg in Denmark, as well as a nod to his new international lifestyle.” The fencing has now been taken down and the pair are getting on famously.

Charities feeling One in the pinch five are Nearly 2,000 charities in the UK are having to close their doors as funds from local councils and central government dry up, according to research carried out by anti-cuts website False Economy. While it has been reported that in one council, it took four men to change a lightbulb – and, no they are not joking – and another paid nearly £400 to buy a ream of paper (because of the staffing time it takes to issue requisitions etc.) that they could have bought along the local high street for less than a fiver, they say that they can no longer afford to spend money on charities. One charity worker said that money is wasted sometimes where departments double up on work that could be done by one centralised department, streamlining could save money. However, charities such as Age Concern and the Citizens Advice Bureau, plus all manner of local charities that deal with children with
learning difficulties are all affected as £110 million is cut from the budget. Some care services, groups for the disabled and support for the elderly are also affected – for example Age Concern Oldham will see its funding reduced from £212,892 to £31,000, while the Voluntary Action South Leicestershire (VASL) has lost £20,939 state funding for its befriending service for the isolated and lonely. Peter Kyle, from the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, told the BBC that demand for charitable services has significantly increased – and cutting funding will simply create costs elsewhere. "Nobody knows how to deliver more for less, how to deliver bang for the buck, than the voluntary sector when it comes to supporting vulnerable people in society. And what the government needs to do is to learn from that expertise not actually eviscerate their ability to deliver at this tough time," he said.

No longer just the domain of the school playground, the victims who are mostly girls, suffer postings on the likes of Facebook and Twitter, and there has even been a site set up for children to gossip and bully others online anonymously. Parent groups, teachers, and police are demanding that something should be done about these nasty notes that have caused some children to commit suicide when they could stand it no more. They say that more and more children are not wanting to go to school or play with friends because of the horrible things, true and false, that have been posted by so called friends and classmates.
The game of ping pong, or to give it its English proper name, table tennis had always been associated with youth clubs or scouting and guiding holidays. However, in the last few months the game, or sport as its players refer to it, has seen a huge upsurge in popularity. One former player of the sport in the Olympic Games said that it had always been thought of as a bit of a “naff” game but now there are outlets popping up with proper clothes and all manner of different bats and balls. A man in his 30’s who has started playing in his local pub described the game as “truly cool”! Suppliers to clubs and pubs, once the domain of a well-used darts board, are seeing a very large upsurge in sales of the tables. And in Hull the local city council has dotted fortyfive tables in ten different locations around the city to encourage people to exercise more. The event runs for a month, after which 12 of the tables will stay permanently in the city centre and the rest will
be donated to community groups and public organisations in Hull. From July to August last year a “Smash The City” table tennis competition was set up in London’s Paternoster Square within the City’s Square Mile, the Barbican Centre and Finsbury Avenue Square in Broadgate. City office workers were lent bats and balls to play with on the six tables and were encouraged to form teams to beat rival offices
and companies. There were both lunchtime and after work leagues and the event was hailed a roaring success by the 50,000 people who took part. The Lord Mayor of London at the time, Nick Anstee, said that it was an opportunity for people working in the City to come together for exercise, networking and competition. Playing the game for half an hour will burn off around 200 calories.

Local News PP would get absolute majority If the regional election were to be held in Andalucia today, the Partido Popular would get an absolute majority, according to the University of Granada's latest General Study of Public Opinion in Andalucia (Egopa), which gave the party a 14.6 per cent lead over the ruling Socialist Party. Recent polls have been giving the PP the lead but not big enough to win an absolute majority. The Socialist Party has governed Andalucia since it became a decentralised region (autonomy) 30 years ago. According to the poll, 90 per cent of Andalucians said their main worry was unemployment followed by the economy (40 per cent), the political situation (25 per cent), education (18
per cent) and corruption (nearly 1 per cent). It is the first time that corruption has appeared in the top five list of people's concerns.
Fiddling the figures According to the national newspaper ABC, the poll's figures indicating the popularity of Andalucian politicians had been tampered with to make it
look as if regional premier José Antonio Griñan is the most popular. The original figure, according to ABC was a mark of 4.12 out of five which became 4.25 in the published version to put him ahead of the Partido Andalucista's Pilar Gonzalez (4.17) and PP leader Javier Arenas (4.16) instead of third.

Ramadan empties Marbella streets The tourist sector has been celebrating the return in large numbers of tourists from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar but the Muslim fast of Ramadan has put an end
to all that. Because eating, drinking and sexual intercourse are forbidden from sunrise to sunset, the tradition during Ramadan is for whole families to break fast together at night. As a
result, most Muslims prefer to return to their own countries for the four-week-long fast. And Ramadan will interrupt the Arab tourism season in Spain again next year, when it will be held in July.
Disabled beach celebrates anniversary The Las Gaviotas beach in Fuengirola was the first one in Andalucia to attend to disabled people when it opened 11 years ago. Equipped with special lifts and pathways, showers and other equipment, its two lifeguards help an average of 40 people a day to enjoy a dip in the sea. The Finnish Disabled Association also provides specialised personnel to look after users on
weekdays from 11 am to 8 pm. This year more than 1,000 people enjoyed the beach from June 15th to July 15th, a number that rises as the season advances. The mayor, Esperanza Oña, said it had been “tremendously gratifying to see hundreds of disabled people arriving happily at the beach, knowing it was endowed with everything that would make their stay enjoyable”.
Tourist Bus increases fleet Despite the economic crisis, the Malaga Tourist Bus company has had to acquire an extra vehicle to cope with a 9-per-cent increase in users. The new bus will have a sliding roof so that it can operate on rainy days and will offer 16 languages on its new multilingual audio device.
Last year, the the company's eight buses toured the city 72,000 times. The buses run all year round and provide one of the best and cheapest ways of seeing the city, as users pay one fare but can get off at the different stops until they arrive back at the starting point.

15-M backs Torremolinos businessman Some 20 members of the 15-M youth protest movement gathered outside Torremolinos town hall on Monday in support of Daniel Perez, the businessman who has been on hunger strike for two weeks. He is claiming the return of a concession to operate hydropedals in the La Carihuela area which he had been doing for the past 23 years. Sr Perez went to the town hall to thank the M-15 members for their support and to try to meet the mayor, Pedro Fernandez Montes, who once again refused to see him.

Dress rules for August feria The hospitality sector have decided to continue implementing dress rules that were first introduced for the August feria some five years ago. The rules are aimed specifically at younger people and some tourists who, said the president of Malaga's Hoteliers Association (Aehma), “think they're still at the beach”. Rafael Prado said topless men and women in bikinis would not be allowed into establishments that have doormen and they would not be served if they
entered establishments that do not have doormen. He added that it was just a matter of common sense not to wear flip-flops, which leave the wearers vulnerable to cuts from the broken glasses and bottles that litter many streets during the feria. Sr Prado pointed out that such dress rules are now imposed by law in many Spanish cities and
although the police in Malaga have been stopping unsuitably dressed people in the city centre, they were not fining them – yet. He also said the hospitality sector was expecting a further drop in income this year because of the continuing economic crisis. “We expect just as many visitors as last year – possibly even more – but we know they'll have less money to spend,” he said.

More trains for Malaga feria The local train between Malaga and Fuengirola will run every 20 minutes on Sunday, August 14th and the following day, when the feria attracts the highest number of visitors from along the coast. The train service between Malaga and Pizarra will
also be more frequent during those two days. The AVE fast trains from Madrid to Malaga will have extra carriages at the beginning and end of the feria to cope with the expected increase in the number of visitors from the capital.

More staff, less income
Russians fastest growing group Marbella has always attracted well-heeled Russians but the increase has been very noticeable so far this year and could possibly double by the end of the season, according to the Costa del Sol Tourism Office. There has also been a sharp rise in the number of tourists from the former Soviet satellites, especially Poland and the Czech Republic. Since the US First Lady's visit last year, the number of Americans choosing the Costa has risen by 30 per cent. While the British and the Germans continue to dominate the scene, figures show that more Italians, French and Swiss are arriving this year.
Last year was not a good year for ONCe, the National Organisation of the Blind. Despite continuing to be one of Spain's most favourite lotteries, last year's income of €94.7 million was down just under 4 per cent over the previous year. Despite that, ONCe's representative in Andalucia, Patricio Carceles, said the organisation continued to create jobs for the blind, having employed another 304 people last year, to bring the total number of lottery sellers to 4,029. Eco-park nearly ready The company building the Tres Jardines eco-park has said it will definitely be ready for opening by September. It will be the first eco-park to be self sufficient in water and wind energy resources in Andalucia and its completion has been delayed several times. Work began on the park in 2007 and was supposed to be completed two years later. Council limits use of mobile phones Any councillor running up a bill of more than €60 a month on his/her mobile phone will have to pay the difference from now on. It was one of several money-saving measures announced last week by Mayor Maria Paz Fernandez, who will also take a slight cut in salary. She also announced that councillors who do not attend the compulsory 8 am meetings on Monday will be fined €50. The town’s new council has inherited a debt of €11 million.

Community Q and A video for British passports The Regional Passport Office at the British Consulate intend putting together a new informative video this summer to iron out some of the confusion associated with British passports. The passport team in Madrid are inviting expats to send them their queries and questions before the 19th August. All and any questions regarding passports are encouraged: How is a passport made? Why do passport fees change? Why does my new passport have a different number? Why are passports more expensive abroad than back in the UK? and so on. Depending on the work load, but hopefully by the end of September, the new video will broadcast online on the website ukinspain@fco.gov.uk. Residencia renewal changes since the 1st of July Recent changes to the Residencia renewal procedure have resulted in predictable minor confusions. The changes ,although small, are important. Firstly the form, the EX 16 has been upgraded to an EX 18. Even though they look similar – and even if you were given an EX 16 at the police station when you made your appointment – it is no longer accepted. You can pick up the new version at any National Police Station or download it from the internet site www.mir.es/SGACAVT/mo delos/extranjeria/modelos _extranje/ex_00.pdf Secondly the fee or tasa, has increased by 20 cents to €10.20. The €10.20 has to be paid at a bank. Again, even if the form you were
given (Mod 790) says only to pay €10 Euros and you have already paid it, you still have to pay the 20 cents difference. No matter how annoying it is, the 20 cents has to be paid at the bank – the police station unfortunately cannot accept the 20 cents in cash.

personal details. It shows your full name and address, your place and date of birth, your parents given names and your NIE number. It carries no photograph and is not valid for identification purposes, although you may on occasion be asked to show it.

S
ome readers may be disappointed, others may rejoice – but hopefully this will be the last column I ever write about Zapatero. He’s still the head of government but circumstances have already thrown him on the dust heap of history. He was simply not up to the job and I never trusted him, along with an awful lot of other people much more important than I am.

e can’t be blamed for all our present woes, but then he could have done a lot more than he did either to avoid them or alleviate them. he Socialist candidate in the next election – former deputy PM and interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba – admitted over the weekend that he regretted the government had not done anything to burst the construction bubble which apparently they were all aware of long before it burst itself, with disastrous consequences. When I read that, I asked myself – who’s this man working for, his party or the opposition? You simply don’t hand ammunition like that to your enemies – especially not when there’s an election just round the corner!
O
f course, Rubalcaba was trying to get across the message that he’s much more open about things than Zapatero, more honest, more sincere. But he’s also saying he wants to lead the party more to the left and that is just what a lot of Spaniards don’t want, as he will find out on election day (Nov 20th if you haven’t read the front page yet). Of course, the more left-wing Socialists now look upon Zapatero as a running capitalist dog who takes his orders from the banks, the EU, the bosses of industry, the IMF and the World Bank. What they fail to grasp is that you shouldn’t spend money you don’t have as lavishly as this government has done. Zapatero, who studied law not economics, took over a very solid economy and just ignored it until it leapt up and slapped him the face in June 2008 – when he finally admitted there was an economic crisis. He’d been calling it a slowdown during the 2008 general election campaign, assuring everyone that things were going to get better. There were just under two million unemployed at the end of 2007 and just under three million at the end of 2008. The figure now stands at over 4.8 million and the Socialists are making a big thing of the fact that some 42,000 people found jobs in July, the fourth drop in a row which seems to confirm their prediction that things are looking up. However, it may be a different story when the tourist season end in the autumn.

’ve said all along that Zapatero is not to be trusted and the way he announced the election date is just one more – and hopefully the last – example of why I don’t trust him. Ever since he announced he would not be running again, he’s been swearing blind
Why he changed his mind that he would not bring forward the election. Then he did an amazing U-turn last Friday, and brought it forward to November 20th, a date which all the political parties had been gearing their campaigns to anyway.
H
e then had the gall to say he’d taken the decision some time ago – so why didn’t he say so, instead of keeping us all on tenterhooks and creating a lot of unnecessary political instability.
W
e now know that he obtained permission to build a new house in Leon, his home town, a couple of years back, and even before he announced he wouldn’t be running had told speaker Jose Bono and Rubalcaba they were the only two who were capable of succeeding him. Apparently one of his dearest wishes was to be succeeded by the first woman PM – his candidate being defence minister Carme Chacon. Because of this backing, she believed she stood a good chance of being the candidate until just a few days before the primary in June, when the party barons (regional leaders) more or less ordered her to stand down. They knew the voters wouldn’t go for such a lightweight – her only claim to fame being she was the first pregnant defence minister in the world. She’s also a Catalan and after years of Zapatero’s pandering to the Catalan nationalist parties to keep himself in power, most Spaniards are heartily sick of anything to do with Catalonia.

s for the date Zapatero chose – I wonder if it could have anything to do with the fact that it will be the 36th anniversary of Franco's death, giving the Socialists and other lefties the chance to use his ghost to frighten people from voting to the PP – which they claim is Franco's heir.

t looks as if it's going to be an interesting campaign so here's to November 20th – and good riddance to bad rubbish.
P
rime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero ended all the speculation and announced last Friday that early elections will be held on November 20th. The move by Zapatero, who had been insistent in riding out his term until March, took many of his Cabinet officials by surprise. It was only the week before that Justice Minister Francisco Caamaño had told reporters that he was working on pending legislation that would keep lawmakers busy until next spring. This included a speedy trial act and changes to current laws to reform criminal and civil trial procedures. But many other important pieces of legislation, such as greater government transparency and guarantees for public access to official documents, now remain up in the air.
W
hy did Zapatero decide to change his mind and make his announcement before the summer break? The Socialists know that this is the best time, if there is going to be one, to call the race four months before the general elections are scheduled. It is more of a political gamble rather than an economic decision. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the Socialist candidate, continues to have the best showing in polls over Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party. Even though the latest poll released just days before the prime minister’s announcement also shows that the PP would still win by seven points if the elections were held today. Still, that poll by the state-run Centre for Sociological Investigations (CIS) maintains that the Socialists have cut the PP’s lead by three points since April.

he Socialist Party also knows that the PP doesn’t have any magic formulas to present to generate employment and cure the economy. For months, we have been hearing Rajoy bash Zapatero for his unpopular measures while bombarding the public with his rhetorical demand for early elections. Rajoy got his wish and now PP is going to have to finally show its cards and demonstrate to voters that those painful austerity measures the Socialists were forced to introduce will have to remain intact, with no doubt some more tougher belt-tightening next year. Rajoy has even gone so far as making an appeal to moderate voters, who fear he will be governing as an ultra conservative. Just one hour after Zapatero’s announcement, Rajoy appeared before the press to pledge to “govern from the middle” if he wins the elections and assure Spaniards that there will be no cuts in social spending – although earlier this year he suggested at an international economic forum held in Sitges that Spain will have the welfare state it could afford.
A
third element that is poised to give the Socialists some backing is the upcoming corruption trial of former Valencia regional premier Francisco Camps. It will be a chance for them to capitalise on revelations of all the alleged shenanigans of Camps and the rest of the PP. Rajoy wanted Camps to plead guilty to charges that he accepted dress suits and other gifts from businessmen connected to the corrupt Gürtel kickback network in order to avoid a spectacular trial in the middle of an intense campaign. But Camps refused and decided to resign to take his chances in the dock. Testimony that is expected to come out of the trial which Camps and three other former PP officials are facing could be embarrassing because prosecutors at the Valencia High Court will no doubt trace how business was conducted in the PP-regional government during Camps’ past two terms. A host of other PP party officials are also under investigation for illegal campaign financing in Valencia , and this too will play big in what could become a very dirty campaign. These are two blows that Rajoy wanted to dodge.

apatero says he spoke “to everyone I needed” before making his decision to hold early elections. Another key factor is whoever wins the upcoming race will have to scurry to prepare the 2012 budget, which promises to be austere. The PM knew he probably couldn’t count on the support of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the Canaries Coalition (CC) – the Socialists’ parliamentary partners who helped him get the 2011 budget through Congress last year. Zapatero didn’t want a replay of last year’s session where the Socialists lost the support of the Catalan Nationalist CiU bloc, which backed down from teaming up with Zapatero over labour reform. It would be better for the new government to prepare the country’s finances for next year seeing that it will be Spain’s new administrator.
W
hatever the case, the campaign, which officially gets under way on November 5th, has already started. The current bitter climate is favourable to the party that is not in power. But, as always, the future is uncertain. Ushering in a conservative government, known for not being receptive to dialogue and linked to a host of corruption inquiries, may not be the best option for Spain at this moment. The string of social protests organised by the May 15th Movement is a new factor in the political scene that neither the Socialists nor the PP have adequately addressed. Whoever wins the upcoming elections will have to change the approach, and maybe forever, in the way this country is governed.

The agreement includes 361 houses to be transferred to the people of Gibraltar in some of the best areas on the Rock. In return, the government of Gibraltar will build 90 more houses on the Four Corners estate for military personnel. This means that all housing at Europa Point, the Trafalgar Heights Block in Europa Road, Europa Pass Battery, Buena Vista, Old Naval Hospital Road, Chilton Court and elsewhere will transfer out of military hands and any empty properties will be sold by public tender. Any military personnel who leave or retire from the services will be able to buy their apartments under Gibraltar’s “right to buy” scheme.
The MoD will then be located mainly within the Naval Base, Devil’s Tower Camp, Four Corners and the airfield. However, some specialist operational facilities will remain in their current positions. Mr Caruana stated that the continuing presence of the military on Gibraltar is both economically and politically important, adding that the new lands’ agreement; "benefits everyone and provides excellent opportunities to Gibraltar for the present and future. The agreement provides the government which much land and facilities that it can put to local public, economic, leisure and social use and it allows government to rezone the use of or regenerate significant areas of Gibraltar for the future. As with other lands’ ageements since 2004, all properties now built by GOG to re-provide MOD housing or other facilities would revert to GOG free of charge when they become surplus to MOD needs in the future."
More rocks on the Rock It has been revealed by Police Commissioner Louis Wink that up to 2kg of cocaine is used in Gibraltar every month and he has made a plea to the people of Gibraltar to report any knowledge they have about the dealers to the police.

Playing with horses

Last weekend Parelli Professional, Freddy Verleyen, showed a fascinated audience how to have fun communicating with horses even when you are not in the saddle.
H
is demonstration, designed to introduce more people to the concept of natural horsemanship, was held at Finca Hiedra in Coin where Freddy has joined the owners, Dawn and Jeff Mason to create The Natural Horsemanship Association of Coin. And what exactly is “natural horsemanship”? Well, it means “talking” to horses in a way they understand. Horses can't think like humans but humans can learn to think like horses and establish a more meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and trust.
N
ow I have spent the last twenty or so years rekindling a childhood passion for horses. And I, like most riders, have
countless memories of scarey episodes while riding. Most ended up with my steed deciding that flight (in any direction) was preferable to risking closer inspection of any potential threat!
B
ut in Freddy's “playground” horses were calmly walking over bright blue sheeting, through a doorway filled with dangling strips of transparent plastic, past a barrel covered in black and white “cowlike” splodges, walking up to and even climbing on to huge tractor tyres, generally treating the whole place as a totally unthreatening environment. The difference was that their owners had been following a recognised programme of working with their horses to gain their confidence and
respect while all six feet were on the ground. Freddy's favourite maxim is “foundation before specialisation” – in other words, don't get on your horse and try and do things on top of him before you understand and trust each other. To that end they first learn to play “games” together, games that use the horse’s natural reactions.
O
f course natural horsemanship isn't a new concept but more horse owners and horse lovers are taking an interest in it. Watching Freddy's demonstration here in Spain where horses play such a big role in ferias the different approach is obvious – particularly when he shows his audience just what can be achieved, with time and
patience, using the Parellli guidelines of “love, language and leadership”. Most of the macho Spanish riders on their prancing stallions get their control from the heavy bits and spurs traditional in this country – they look amazing, but on close inspection the horses are anything but relaxed and happy. When Freddy works with his horsey “partner” Principe it is, as they say, “ a whole different ball game”. With a head collar and single rope (and often with no rope at all) they “dance” and play together on the ground, mirroring each other's movements and when Freddy does leap on his back (on a “bareback” saddle, with no stirrups), they show off dressage movements and jump obstacles in perfect harmony with each other.

It was congratulations all round when Harry Ramsden recently celebrated his 65th birthday, and his nephew, Steve Davies, celebrated taking over The English Bookshop in Sabanillas. They decided to have a combined celebration with their families and friends. This was held at a venue on the Paseo in Sabinillas where everyone’s needs and tastes were catered for and all had a great time. Guests were asked to make a donation to Age
Concern in lieu of gifts – and this raised the magnificent sum of €220. Age Concern are grateful to Harry and Steve and all their friends for raising so much. The whole amount will go towards supporting their volunteers who work in the community. The Age Concern shop in Calle Zaragoza and the Drop-In-Centre are now closed until 5th September to allow staff to have a well earned break. Calls to the Drop-In-Centre telephone (951318234) will, however, be picked up.
Saturday night and La Risa@Lauro Golf was buzzing with people. So, what was the occasion? It was La Risa’s third birthday party! Chef Fritz and his band of helpers produced a long table full of different types of salad and from the bar-b-q came sausages, burgers, chicken and pork fillets and delicious steaks plus spicy chicken wings. The drinks’ waiters and waitresses were kept busy from the start at 7.30 until gone midnight when we all went home. Of course, those of us who were driving home kept strictly within our limits and there was plenty of tea and coffee
on hand if you wanted. Entertainment was provided by Rob Davey who has so much energy it’s ridiculous! His 50s and 60s show had everything from the Monkees “Daydream Believer” to The Beatles “I Saw her standing there”, “Twist and Shout”, plus a whole range of Buddy Holly, Billy Fury, Del Shannon, Neil Sedaka – so many, varied artistes, and expertly done too. Jan and her staff once again did a superb job of making the party swing along and practically everybody, despite the heat of the night was up dancing. Everybody sang “Happy Birthday La Risa” and we

he untimely passing of Amy Winehouse has left most people with some sort of opinion. Whether she was her own worst enemy or a victim of unscrupulous greed isn´t for me to decide. The question is, was her duration in the music industry impressive enough to see a biopic of her tempestuous career being shot in the near future?.

By J.J.Abrams starring Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler You can expect monster thrills in this summer’s surprise hit – although with J.J.Abrams (behind the mega succesful reboot of Star Trek) at the helm and Stephen Spielberg in the producer's chair, the film comes with a readymade pedigree. The scene is set in the summer of 1979 when a group of teenagers decide to make their own Super 8mm movie. Best friends Joe (Courtney) and
wannabe film director Charles (Riley Griffiths) pick schoolmate Alice (Fanning) to star in their zombie movie. But while filming a scene at a railway station they narrowly avoid being killed as a train spectacularly derails. And before you can utter B-Movie, some rather traditional plot elements fall into place. Post the crash odd things start to happen in the small Ohio town where
the kids live. Posters go up everywhere as the neighbourhood dogs start to disappear. And then a secretive army squad starts to sweep through the town. The kids decide to investigate, and discover that an alien monster escaped from a sealed compartment on the train. Now it's on the loose and hunting down the humans. The suspense is ratcheted up nicely with
some great action moments and the movie – in typical Spielberg way– is a touching homage to the innocence of the late 1970s. It's become a word-ofmouth hit which has started to take the summer box office by storm, and picked up a string of good reviews. A definite popcorn romp.

hirteen years passed after the death of Billie Holiday before a film was made about her in 1972. “Lady Sings the Blues” was the heavily fictionalised film biography of thelegendary cabaret chanteuse, who rose to great stardom as one of the great blues impressionists of our time but, sadly, was never able to completely escape the demons which haunted her for her entire life.

Billy Dee Williams officially became a star with his charismatic turn as Louis McKay, Billie's true love. Richard Pryor also received an Oscar nomination for his funny and caustic performance as "Piano Man", Billie's best friend and piano player, who was chasing demons of his own.

he film is lavishly mounted with Ross draped in some stunning costumes that definitely merited Oscar attention. She gets plenty of opportunities to sing and though she really doesn't sound anything like Holiday did, she does capture the spirit of this tragic songbird. It's not a great guide as far as providing facts about Holiday's life. It seems to gloss over her alleged early days as a prostitute and her drug abuse, but it's a grand example of storytelling on screen with a riveting leading character who will capture your heart.

n 1973, Joe Boyd and John Head directed a documentary film about the life of Jimi Hendrix, entitled, simply, Jimi Hendrix.
J
imi Hendrix chronicles the story of the man, the myth, and the legend –the left-handed dude with a love of the blues and Bob Dylan, who took rock and roll almost to another planet. He was also, as described by Eric Clapton, "gullible", and susceptible to the leeches around him that, by way of the drugs, led to his very sudden downfall. Had he lived there's no doubt he could have had an output that for his genre would be the equivalent of one of those great 18th century European composers or even 20th century jazzmen. There's been so much written about him that he's been elevated to cult status and it's a welcome thing to see this documentary so soon after his death.

here is still much speculation today as to whether his death was accidental or murder, and conspiracy theories still loom heavily about Kurt Cobain´s apparent suicide. If you were a Cobain fan, then you should catch the 2006 documentary “Kurt Cobain: about a Son”.

ette Midler starred in the 1979 movie "The Rose" which was based on the career of Janis Joplin, another legend who died at 27. There is a new movie about her in the pipeline, due to be released next year, entitled "The Gospel According to Janis". Who will play the lead has not been decided, but I did hear a rumour that Renee Zellweger was being considered, and as Janis used to be referred to as ´the ugliest man on campus´it may not be a bad choice.!

Take whatever is said or promised with a pinch of salt this week unless of course you get it in writing. The effort that you put into things and the work that you do will bring you significant results later in the year. If you need to make a large purchase then this is the time to do it as you have a lot of powers of discernment at the moment. You have a new vantage point in an existing situation that will serve as a springboard for future projects. Trust your instincts and don’t be worried about pushing forward. There will be a lot that is out of your control and you just have to roll up your sleeves and do the best that you can. Keep your focus on the here and now and you will discover many of the answers and opportunities you have been looking for. Just realise that all eyes are on you now and whatever you do will have an amplified effect. Keep a cool head this week because there is this raging energy of fire within that could easily instigate an emotional battle. Whoever it is that you would like to flatten is wise to keep out of your way, although, bear in mind it will not do you any good in the long run to be hot headed towards this person. There will be something that catches your attention towards the weekend that will have a softening effect on you and may have you changing certain plans.

Lovely and tender – loin Ingredients: ● 275gr fat-trimmed pork tenderloin ● Salt and pepper to taste ● Plain flour for dusting ● 2 tablespoons vegetable oil ● 237ml salad dressing made with vegetable oil and apple vinegar. ● 180ml honey ● 1 tablespoon dry onion soup mix (try to use a UK mix as Spanish ones are salty)
This week is going to go with a blast as your personal and romantic relationships zing up a notch. This is a time when your heart begins to swell – enjoy it. Directions 1. Preheat oven to 175ºC 2. Trim any excess fat from pork and pat dry with a paper towel. Season with salt and pepper. Dust with flour, shaking off any excess. 3. In a large frying pan, heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Sear the pork in the oil, rotating to brown evenly all sides. Transfer to a baking dish just large enough to fit the tenderloin.
4. In a bowl, stir together the salad dressing, honey, and onion soup mix. Pour evenly over the tenderloin, rolling the meat to coat on all sides. Cover with aluminum foil. 5. Bake, covered, in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, basting with the glaze every 10 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking another 30 minutes, or until pork is no longer pink in the centre.

Zara Phillips, who will keep her name for business but will be referred to privately as Mrs Tindall, wore an elegantly simple long white wedding gown when she married Mike Tindall, who plays rugby for England, last Saturday at the 17th century Canongate Kirk on Scotland’s famous Royal Mile. The dress, a simple ivory silk gown designed by Stewart Parvin, won widespread media approval. She also wore the tiara that her mother, Princess Anne, had worn when she married Zara’s father, Captain Mark Phillips, together with Jimmy Choo shoes. She
carried a bouquet of white lilies and silver cineraria.

Preventing Alzheimer’s
Air-conditioning link to colds When it's hot outside, air-conditioning can make life so much easier to bear.
Simple lifestyle changes might lower a person’s risk for developing dementia, according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. Using a mathematical model, they estimated that certain types of behaviour or conditions such as physical inactivity, smoking, depression, low education, hypertension, obesity and diabetes, all of which can be modified, are responsible for about half of the roughly 5.3 million Alzheimer’s cases in the United States and 34 million cases worldwide. They calculated that if people addressed these risks – by exercising, quitting smoking, increasing their education or losing weight, for example – that a significant number of Alzheimer’s cases could be prevented. The operative word was “could.” Researchers pointed out that there is no scientific proof yet that any of these risk factors in fact causes Alzheimer’s. They said their new analysis could
only be considered a practical recipe for preventing the disease if it can be shown in the future that these risk factors do cause the disease. Research on prevention of Alzheimer’s is in its infancy. It has only been since the 1980s that dementia has not been considered a symptom of normal ageing. Last year, a National Institutes of Health panel of experts with no vested interest in Alzheimer’s research concluded that “no evidence of even moderate scientific quality exists to support the association of any modifiable factor with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.” The panel found the strongest evidence for only one conclusion: that
the herb gingko biloba does not prevent Alzheimer’s. There was moderate evidence that neither vitamin E nor cholinesterase inhibitors, decrease risk of Alzheimer’s. And there was moderate evidence that the gene ApoE4 significantly increases Alzheimer’s risk, as does menopause therapy with estrogens and progestins. A spokesman for the

Alzheimer's Association said the panel's conclusions were a “glass half empty”. He said: “We would agree that we haven’t proven any of these risk factors, but there’s data that are pretty good for some of them. And in a world where we have lots of Alzheimer’s disease and no definitive medical intervention, prevention strategies that are based on lifestyle changes are certainly attractive.”
However, some people believe that sudden drops in temperature can play havoc with the immune system, while others say air-conditioners are germspewing machines, cultivating bacteria and viruses like petri dishes and then blasting and recirculating them in enclosed spaces. As with colds and other respiratory ailments contracted in the wintertime, cold air itself is not the culprit – viruses are. But now researchers at Cardiff University say it’s possible air-conditioners may contribute in some small way to respiratory infection. They extract moisture from the air, which can dry out the protective mucus that
lines the nostrils, allowing viruses a better chance to become established in the nose. One study in 2004 compared 920 adult women and found that those who worked in offices with central airconditioning had higher rates of absence due to sickness and more visits to ear, nose and throat doctors than those without it. Another study of almost 800 office workers in 1998 also found more symptoms of sickness in workers in air-conditioned offices, compared with workers in offices with natural ventilation. It seems the jury is still out on this matter.

British pensioners, particularly widowed and single women, are really suffering financially in Spain and throughout the EU. A new basic state pension fit for the 21st century and one that lifts all pensioners, wherever they live, out of poverty and means testing
would go a long way to solving their problems and restoring their dignity. There are a lot of very upset women in Britain. Who said a verbal agreement isn't worth the paper it's written on?! At our house we receive water once every two weeks which fills our tank. We have had no choice but to learn how to survive on 2000 litres for two weeks. This year we have even taken our shampoo and shower gel to Torremolinos beach to use the showers there! Then come the 1st September miraculously the water in our tank is filled every single day until next May/June. The town hall somehow manage to arrange that the pipes in our area have a problem every year – well they don't! The pressure is turned down so the town has
water. Then when it is on at night it doesn't get very far because with the lack of pressure it's not filling everyone quickly enough. When we were granted water they said we needed a tank but they didn't specify we should buy something in the region of 100,000 litres. They also said they would not guarantee the water but they were very happy indeed to take 1400Euros off everyone down here. Surely it's a basic human right to have clean water etc. especially considering we live in a first-world country. People back home can't believe what we go through and the sad thing is we can't even invite family over between May and September because of this. If they don't sort it out Coin will have a few residents less and I think there'll be many more behind us!

e Summer Triangle As the Earth moves around the Sun we get to see different stars and constellations at different times of the year, and during the summer months there is one particular trio of stars that are not really a constellation as such but are generally referred to as the Summer Triangle.
I
f you go outside after about 11 pm and look towards the east and almost directly over head you will find the three brightest stars in this region. The brightest star is called Vega which can be found almost overhead, lower down and to the right is Altair and to the left is Deneb. It is quite a large spread of stars, the distance from Vega to Deneb is about the size of your outstretched hand at arm’s length while the distance from Deneb to Altair is about equal to a ruler held at arm’s length but the stars are easily the brightest so very simple to find.

t was Sir Patrick Moore who first coined the phrase “the summer triangle” back in the 1950’s and the name has stuck although these stars are not an ‘official’ constellation but are in fact three other constellations. Vega is part of Lyra the Lyre or harp; Deneb marks the ‘tail’ of Cygnus the swan and Altair is part of Aquila the eagle. Lyra has Vega uppermost and then a crooked box of four stars slightly below all of about equal brightness more or less. Aquila is a difficult constellation if you don’t know what to look for but Cygnus forms a lovely cross that is easily recognised stretching to the right of Deneb and is sometimes referred to as the northern cross, with a little imagination it really does look like a swan flying across the sky with its neck out stretched ahead of it.

hile the stars of the Summer Triangle may look more or less the same brightness nothing could be further from the truth. Firstly they are each at vastly different distances from us; Altair is 16 light years away and about twice the size of our Sun, Vega is 25 light years away and four times bigger than the Sun while Deneb is a huge star almost 300 times bigger than the Sun and at 3200 light years away. The light that you are seeing left Deneb over a thousand years before Christ was born.

f you are lucky enough to live in a very dark area away from street lights then
you should also be able to spot the Milky Way running the full length right through Cygnus and beyond and full of millions of other stars that are well worth checking out with your binoculars. As you sweep along the Milky Way the myriad of stars at first seem to play a trick with your eyes and at first you are not sure if it is stars that you are seeing or defects in your eyesight, but with a little practice you soon begin to realise that it is an impossibly large number of stars sweeping along its length.

ook carefully with binoculars or a telescope at the star that marks the ‘head’ of the swan. This star is called Albireo and is a favourite of mine. It is a double star but the colour of the two stars is very dramatic indeed, one star is a bright yellow in colour while the other is a vivid blue in colour. Whenever I let people look at Albireo through a telescope they are often taken aback by the contrasting colours.

irectly between the two lower stars in Lyra is a very interesting object, it is M57 the ring nebular. Through even a modest telescope a very distinct ‘doughnut’ shape can be seen, this is the remnants of a star that exploded many thousands of years ago and the explosion is expanding throughout space. Eventually the ring nebular will disperse so much that it will no longer be visible from Earth.

The race started in fine rain on Sunday at the Hungaroring, it also began to fall again later on, to provide all the drama that this race needed.

Both these drivers though showed their driving skills when they went wide and drove over the white line at the edge of the track but didn’t spin out, unlike Massa later on, after he tried to turn the car back in. Sebastian Vettel had driven to a superb pole position on Saturday, and it looked as if the German would return to dominate again, especially as the Hungaroring is almost as difficult to pass on as the street circuit of Monaco. But with the race starting under finely falling rain and the cars all shod with
intermediate tyres, it became an unpredictable free-for-all. Vettel made the perfect start, as the two McLarens battled for second behind him, the two actually touching wheels going round the first corner. Hamilton, who started in second spot on the grid,

held off Button and then proceeded to attack Vettel. Hamilton definitely had the edge on Vettel although both cars were sliding around on the track. On Lap 5 Vettel could no longer hold off the impatient Hamilton. He slid wide, and Hamilton passed him, and then continued to drive away and put daylight between himself and the rest. “I lost it, I was pushing too hard and trying to be on the edge,” Vettel said. “The white lines are very slippery, and it’s easy to have a spin.” The track dried out about a third of the way through the 70-lap race and the drivers switched to dry tyres. But the race picked up once more when it began to rain again with just over 20 laps left.
An “array” of about 17,000 solar panels has been installed at Burnaston, covering 90,000m2 of industrial land within the site. It has the capacity to save 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the complex each year, and realise an energy saving equivalent to 4.6 million kWh – roughly the power needed to build 7,000 cars a year. The solar panels in the main array cost more than £10million and are all British-manufactured. They
were installed and paid for by British Gas, which is claiming the feed-in tariff – a government scheme designed to improve the uptake of solar power generation systems, under which owners are paid for the renewable electricity they produce. Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK), which operates the Burnaston facility, will benefit from the free renewable electricity generated.

Button’s site hacked Racing driver Jenson Button has told the person who hacked in to his official website and told his fans he had been seriously injured in a crash to "get some friends". The 32-year-old McLaren driver had fallen victim to a "distasteful hoax" after a story appeared on his site stating
he was in a "critical condition" in hospital following a "serious accident" in Hungary. The website was taken down soon after the post emerged. Button's spokesman said it was the work of an online hacker who had breached the page's security.
Button said the team had given no team orders over the radio, preferring to leave the drivers to race and concentrate. “With the rain coming down it was pretty difficult,” he said. “It is always fun racing Lewis; I think we were pretty fair.”
Solar power Toyota plant Toyota and British Gas threw the switch to launch an industry-leading initiative in sustainable energy generation at Toyota’s Burnaston car plant this week. A vast solar power system – the largest installed by any UK vehicle manufacturer – has officially come on stream at the Derbyshire site, ready to help meet the factory’s electricity demand and reduce its carbon footprint. The project adds to the plant’s already impressive environmental profile as one of Toyota’s five standardbearing worldwide “eco-factories”. Notably, Burnaston is also the production centre for the Toyota Auris Hybrid, the first volume production full hybrid car to be built in Europe.

Dyson wins the Irish Open Taking inspiration from his fine finish at the British Open England's Simon Dyson clinched his fifth European Tour title with a one-stroke victory ahead of Australian Richard Green. The left-hander Green had a long putt to snatch the championship on the final hole but ended up taking a bogey to hand victory to Dyson on 15 under par. Scotland's Stephen Gallacher holed a monster birdie putt on the last to claim third place on his own. England’s David Howell, who was tied for the lead overnight with Dyson and Green, fell away with a 73 on the Killarney course.

I am a keen fan of Spanish football and I would like to share some of my knowledge and enthusiasm about the top teams and the best players in La Liga – the equivalent of the Barclays Premier League. I thought that as we are on the summer break, I would look at some of the young Spanish stars to keep an eye on next season.
Thiago Alcántara from Barcelona F.C is probably the biggest prospect in Spanish football. At only 20 years of age, he is already being called the “new Xavi”, the mastermind behind Barcelona’s success in La Liga and Spain’s recent
World Cup victory. Thiago is a midfielder known for his vision and passing skills but also has an eye for goal scoring. He has gained many honours including one champion’s league and three La Liga titles.
David de Gea, 20, is a former Atletico de Madrid and current Manchester United goalkeeper. He is believed to be the most likely successor to Iker Casillas, the current captain of the Spanish national team. David made his debut at only 18 and since then has achieved an astonishing 84 caps, managing to keep a total of 24 clean sheets. He was often recognised by the Spanish press as one of the best goalies in La Liga. Sergio Canales, 20, is an attacking midfielder well
known for his speed, quick thinking and scoring skills. He was one of the biggest
surprises of the 2009-2010 campaign, when he played for Racing Santander, earning 26 caps and scoring six goals. Sergio is best known for his Man of the Match performance scoring two amazing goals against Seville at their home ground, the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, leading his team to a 2-1 victory. He made his move to Real Madrid at the end of the 2009-2010 season and since then has earned 15 caps for the La Liga giants. Fury over FIFA’s demands FIFA chiefs have come under fire after wasting £18 million of taxpayers' money in cash-strapped Brazil on the World Cup 2014 qualifying draw. FIFA chiefs had insisted that Cup organisers erect a custom-built auditorium especially for the event after insisting that they could not find a suitable existing venue in Rio de Janeiro, The 100-minute show cost Brazilians £180,000 a minute – or £3,000 a second. Football's world governing body also demanded that nearby Santos Dumont airport was shut for the duration of the ceremony, partly for security purposes and partly to avoid interference for TV viewers. A two-metre high security barrier policed by armed guards was also erected, though in the end it had to be taken down before the draw began as high winds buffeted the area and threatened to wreck the marquee at Marina da Gloria. Some 2,000 football bigwigs from around the
world were invited to the draw, though no spectators were allowed – prompting hundreds of angry protestors to gather around the marquee waving placards criticising both the event itself and 2014 World Cup chief Ricardo Teixeira. Teixeira has endured a controversial few days after getting involved in spats with British journalists asking probing questions about the FIFA cash-forvotes scandal, and being heavily criticised by local media for refusing to invite Pele to the draw. Yet his snub to Pele backfired: the legendary striker was present at the draw following his appointment by the Brazilian president as a special World Cup ambassador, and ironically ended up sitting next to Teixeira throughout the event. England will face Montenegro, Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, and San Marino in Group H when they bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

GB swimmers do well at the World Championships held in Shanghai Great Britain won three gold medals at the World Championships in Shanghai - and that is the best indicator yet of what we can achieve at London 2012. GB missed out on four other medals by the narrowest of margins so the fact that they were knocking on the door indicates a solid week. There is no reason why the GB team cannot continue to improve and win at least as many medals in London. Rebecca Adlington's win (in the 800m freestyle) was extremely impressive. The FSF said Diouf is banned "from performing any football-related activity for a period of five years with effect from the date of notification of this decision". He has been fined by Blackburn for failing to report on time for preseason training, and was left out of their pre-season tour to Hong Kong. Manager Steve Kean said he thought it was time for Diouf to leave the club, indicating that enquiries have been made by other clubs.
