Riots spread as London burns P 8&9
Lawlessness and looting on the streets of the capital spread to other UK cities
“ROBUST” ACTION NEEDED - UK News
Visions of the Blitz MPs will be recalled from their summer recess on Thursday to discuss measures to deal with disorders which have affected areas of London and other English cities since Saturday night. David Cameron, who interrupted his summer break to chair a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee in Downing Street on Tuesday, told reporters from the steps of No 10 that all Met Police leave had been cancelled, and police numbers on London's streets would rise from 6,000 on Monday to 16,000 on Tuesday. The Met Police, which is drafting in support from 30 other forces, says it will consider using plastic bullets.

ICKHAM’S
WORLD ...2lb off!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
A couple of weeks ago I joined a slimming class called Simply Slimmer and I have to report that, in my first week I lost a whole 2lbs. It may not sound like a lot but that’s nearly a bag of sugar’s worth that I’m not carrying around and my husband has lost 5lbs. neither of us can tell where it’s gone from yet but, at least it’s a start. We have cut out the chokkies and bikkies at work but you are still allowed these as “naughty extras” on this diet which is marvellous for those of us that are chocaholics. My problem with it right now seems to be that I don’t eat enough and trying to remember to eat something small every two hours is proving difficult. Everybody has a different reaon for wanting to lose weight. Most of us want to feel comfortable in our everyday clothes that have been getting tighter and tighter until we’re forced to go out and buy something new and in the next size up. Me, I have a special trip coming up to a place where I haven’t seen some people for ten years and where, last time I went I was slim and petite- I just don’t want the “Blimey, what happened to her?” comments and I have a number of really nice classic dresses that I want to get back into instead of slobbing around in drawstring trousers that the string is getting too short on! The classes I go to are held at la Risa at lauro Golf from 9.30 to 10.30am on a Friday and at Sierra Gorda Bistro in coin on a Thursday. Good news also is that the Olé Butcher in Alhaurin el Grande is doing very low fat burgers and sausages to fit in with our diets and is looking at producing other things for us too! If you want information go to simplyslimmer2011@gmai l.com or turn up and join in.

Visions of the Blitz He said police officers should be given backing to use "tools" to contain rioters and protect property, adding water cannons should be used "if necessary" – as they had been in Northern Ireland. The Conservative Party disassociated itself from comments on the Twitter page of Conservative MEP Roger Helmer, which read: "Time to get tough. Bring in the Army. Shoot looters and arsonists on sight." Labour MP for Hackney North, Diane Abbott, said a curfew should be considered for some city centres to help "regain control of the streets", although she admitted it would be "very difficult to impose". But she warned that water cannons or using the Army would make things worse. Home Secretary Theresa May, who also ended her summer break early, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme water cannons had not been used in mainland Britain and British policing was based on a model of "policing by consent". But she said "in these circumstances" she would listen to what the police felt they needed to do the job. Labour leader Mr Miliband, who has returned to London from a family holiday in Devon, branded the violence "disgraceful criminal behaviour". "What we need to see is the strongest possible police response to restore calm and security to our streets and for communities to work together.” Mr Cameron said he
would make a Commons statement – expected at 1130 BST on Thursday – and there would be a debate so "we are all able to stand together in condemnation of these crimes and stand together in determination to rebuild these communities". He praised police bravery but said many more officers were needed alongside more "robust" action. He expressed sympathy for home owners, business people and others left feeling frightened in communities hit by violence. He said "This is criminality, pure and simple, and it has to be confronted and defeated. People should be in no doubt that we will do everything necessary to restore order to Britain's streets and to make them safe for the lawabiding."
International press reaction GLOBO, BRAZIL The violence is especially concentrated, for now, in the poorest parts of London with a multi-ethnic population – some of the areas just a few kilometres from the Olympic Park, where there will be millions of visitors next year. NEW YORK TIMES, US Just before Dan Rivers suggested to viewers of CNN that the rioters in London seemed to be more interested in looting than protesting, Zeinobia, an Egyptian activist who took part in the protests that forced Hosni Mubarak from power, made a similar observation from a much greater distance, writing: "I

March against Pope vetoed Madrid authorities have turned down a request from 140 atheist, secular and Christian organisations to organise a protest march through the capital on August 17th, the day before Pope Benedict XVI is due to arrive in the capital to attend the World Youth Day celebrations. All three proposed routes were vetoed to avoid the protest coinciding with the huge numbers of young people expected to swarm into the centre of town for the celebrations. Madrid deputy mayor Manuel Cabo said the protests and
demonstrations that were being planned should not "take place at the same time that hundreds of thousands of people are celebrating the exact opposite." The organisers say the march is not antipope, but a protest against GREETINGS CARDS, HELIUM BALLOONS, PARTY DECORATIONS

EU rescue fears grow
Prisoners await ETA communiqué Overheard conversations between jailed ETA terrorists indicate they are convinced the Basque terrorist group is about to issue a communiqué announcing its disbandment. The conversations also indicate that the solidarity for which ETA prisoners are famous is now beginning to show cracks, according to security agents who are following the more important of the almost 600 ETA members currently in jail. Some of the leading prisoners started calling for
an end to violence earlier this year and have interpreted the terrorist group's recent decision in April to stop collecting its “revolutionary” tax from Basque businessmen as a sign that its disbandment is imminent. The tax was one of ETA's main sources of financing and without it,
the group would find it hard to function in the longterm. The anti-terrorist information services of both the police and Guardia Civil also indicate that the group has decided to disband and is only waiting for the right
moment to make the announcement. In January this year, ETA announced a “permanent, general and verifiable” ceasefire and there have been no terrorist attacks since then. The security forces believe ETA has finally run out of steam – most of its more experienced terrorists are

in jail or dead and the “cubs” who are replacing them are floundering for lack of leadership. Meanwhile, the ETA prisoners are getting nervous. One was overheard saying: “The decision has already been taken, I can't understand what they're waiting for.”
A recent survey reflects growing pessimism about Spain's ability to avoid intervention by the EU, despite government reassurances to the contrary. Half of those interviewed in the poll believed intervention was inevitable while only 13 per cent had faith in the economy. The poll was carried out on August 2nd and 3rd, when Spain's risk premium surpassed 400 points for the first time. It dropped back to 280 on Monday after the European Central Bank said it would buy Spanish and Italian bonds to ward off financial market speculators who are undermining efforts to shore up the economy in both Spain and Italy. The UK think tank, the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), said Italy would default without a big jump in economic growth but there was a real chance that Spain would not. The CEBR said conditions in Spain are better because its debt is much lower and “may avoid avoid default and debt restructuring, unless it gets dragged down by contagion”.

Trafico proposes lower speed limit Traffic authority chief Pere Navarro has proposed a 90 kph limit on all regular, single-lane highways, regardless of the width of the shoulder. Currently, the speed limit on these roads is either 100km/h or 90km/h if the shoulder is narrower than 1.5 metres. He said it would reduce fatalities and make rules simpler for drivers. Three quarters of fatal traffic accidents occur on single-lane roads, accounting for 1,730 road deaths last year. The change could be approved before the end of the current legislature.
The Guardia Civil were called out to protect about 70 members of three Historical Memory associations involved in rescuing the remains of Republicans killed by the Franco regime MELILLA during and after the Civil War from a larger number of local residents who objected to Immigrant crammed in sports their presence in the small town of Poyales del Hoyo, Avila province, on Saturday. hold-all The trouble began four days earlier on the Tuesday, when Mayor Antonio Cerro (Partido Popular) removed the remains of three women and seven men from a grave in the town's cemetery and reburied them in a common grave. The granddaughter of one of the three women, who had been raped before being shot, had requested permission to retrieve the bones of her grandmother to bury them alongside her daughter who had survived the execution because the soldiers took pity on her. She was only 12 at the time.
The woman, who died two years ago, had agitated for years to have the remains of her mother and the other two women buried in the cemetery and lived long enough to see her efforts bear fruit. The seven men who were in the same grave had been buried there only recently. The mayor took advantage of the granddaughter's request to remove the remains of the other nine. He went back on his decision the following day, Wednesday, when relatives of the victims complained. He then left town on the Thursday
before giving the order to have the remains transferred back to the cemetery. When the members of the three associations arrived in the town on Saturday to read a statement outside the absent mayor's office, almost twice the number of local residents were waiting for them. A spokesman for the three associations said: “They called us 'red sons of bitches' saying we weren't from the town and probably weren't even Spanish.” The spokesman claimed the mob, who shouted him
down when he tried to read the associations' statement, was led by the four Partido Popular members of the town council who he claimed were drunk at the time. The mayor reappeared on Monday but by press time there was still no news as to what he had finally decided to do with the remains. Meanwhile, the three Historical Memory associations plan to sue him and the other four PP council members and the Guardia Civil has set up a special peace-keeping unit in the town.

The Guardia Civil found a Moroccan man crammed into a sports hold-all in a car they stopped for a regular check at the port last week. On opening the boot, they noticed a slight movement in the bag and found a man sweating profusely and gasping for air. They helped him to straighten himself out but decided he needed no further medical attention. The car belonged to a relative who was returning to Barcelona after the summer vacation. MADRID
Spain a hit in Bollywood A current Bollywood hit about an Indian couple on honeymoon in Spain is part of a coming together of the two countries’ film industries, Carlos Cuadros, director of Spain's Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts, told reporters last week. One of the film’s highlights is Valencia’s famous tomato-throwing festival. The scene proved such a hit that New Delhi recently hosted a recreation of the fiesta for 15,000 people. Spain and India are about to sign a co-production agreement, Sr Cuadros said.

Ramadan fast 'lasts longer high up'
Two former US security contractors may sue former Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his role in their alleged torture in Iraq, a Chicago court has ruled. US citizens DonaldVance and Nathan Ertel were working in Iraq for Shield Group Security, a privately-owned security company, when they started to suspect the company was making improper payments to Iraqi officials in exchange for influence, and that its employees were engaged in illicit weapons trafficking and other illegal activity. The two men started sending information to US government officials in Iraq

Muslims living in the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, should fast longer during the Ramadan holy month, a leading local cleric has said. During Ramadan, Muslims are supposed not to eat or drink between dawn and dusk. "Burj Khalifa is almost one km (0.6 miles) high, which means people in higher floors can still see the sun after it has set on the ground," Ahmed Abdul Aziz al-Haddad said, adding that they should break their fast two minutes after those on the ground. Woman abandons Cuba to Florida swim
Chile has held ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the mine collapse that left 33 men trapped for 69 days. President Sebastian Pinera joined most of the miners at a religious ceremony in the town of Copiapo to give thanks for their rescue. The San Jose mine collapsed on August 5th last year, cutting off the miners at a depth of more than 700m. The last miner was winched to safety on 14th October after a 22-hour televised rescue that gripped the world.

Ms Nyad, 61, failed in her first attempt to complete the crossing from Cuba in 1978, when she was 28. This time, she set off from Havana on Sunday with the aim of reaching Key West in the Florida Keys on Wednesday. But she was struggling with shoulder
pain, ocean swells and asthma before she was brought on board a vessel early Tuesday morning. Ms Nyad was vomiting as she was hauled out of the water. "I am not sad, It was absolutely the right call," she told CNN, which had a producer on a boat

The entire police force of the town of Ascension in Chihuahua state resigned last week after two officers were killed by suspected drug traffickers. The mayor said the 26 officers quit their posts for fear of further attacks. State and federal police as well as soldiers have been called in to patrol the town in their place. An estimated 40,000 people have died in drugrelated violence in Mexico since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon began deploying troops to fight the cartels.

triggered the tsunami which caused the damage.Mr Kan said it was causing serious concerns not just in Japan but across the world. He said: "We will deeply reflect over the conventional belief that nuclear energy is safe, thoroughly look into the cause of the accident and, to secure safety, implement fundamental measures." About 30% of Japan's electricity was
nuclear generated before the Fukushima crisis, and the country had previously targeted raising that figure to 53% by 2030. But Mr Kan said: "I will reduce Japan's reliance on nuclear power, aiming at creating a society that will not rely on atomic power generation." Japan has long vowed never to make or possess nuclear weapons but had embraced nuclear power as it rebuilt after World War II.
Court halts Malaysia asylum deal Australia's High Court has stopped the authorities from deporting a boat-load of asylum seekers to Malaysia, after a lawyer for the refugees argued that their transfer would be illegal. David Manne told Australian radio ahead of the hearing that Malaysia had a "troubling record when it comes to treatment
of refugees". High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne ruled there was a "sufficiently serious question" for the case to have a full hearing, ordering a temporary injunction on the transfers until the hearing can be held later this month. The ruling could jeopardise Australia's deal to send 800 asylum
seekers to Malaysia over the next four years. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said the agreement will "smash the business model of people smugglers", but critics have claimed refugees are often mistreated in Malaysia, which has not signed several human rights treaties.

Scenes from London over the past three or four days have been reminiscent of the Blitz - a total and utter disgrace for any community to watch. On Tuesday morning I was horrified, and frankly furious, to see that the place I was brought up in had been subject to riots, looting and burning. The place was Ealing in West London which was a high class area with leafy streets and lots of parks. Queen Victoria used to have her private train stop on the Hanwell Viaduct just to look out over the beautiful park and, where I lived near Hanger Lane, the likes of cricketer Ted Dexter and crooner Matt Monroe lived. I write this so that you know that this was not a downtrodden area where unemployment was high and people had no money. I went to the junior school that was next to the church with the big spire right in the middle of Ealing Broadway that you could see on Sky News this morning (Tuesday). Later on I could safely walk home at 3am after a night out. The people that have done the damage wouldn’t have a clue who the man shot by police last Thursday was and you can bet that 99% of them wouldn’t even be able to tell you his name so this is NOT about that. They will tell you that they come from broken homes and that they haven’t got jobs. My answer to that is: “And that gives you the right to do this does it?”. Well, no, it bloody well doesn’t! I hear excuse after excuse from these people about such things so, here’s some little known facts about my own background. My mother met a married man and decided
she wanted him so, what did she do? She got pregnant of course, to trap him. I was born in the old Charing Cross hospital which was within the sound of the Bow bells – that makes me a cockney by birth and a true Londoner. My father was a free-spirited jazz musician who wanted nothing to do with kids so they used to go clubbing and leave me on my own in the flat. A neighbour got involved and I was removed by the NSPCC and the police and put in a children’s home. Eventually I was adopted and that was that and they went off to Canada. So going on about coming from a broken home and using that as an excuse just doesn’t wash with me. Been there, done that. I have NEVER been without a job. If I was in one I didn’t like, I found another before I left that one and have never taken a single penny from the state either in the UK or here. I have worked through all my school and college holidays starting in a sweet shop that was owned by a friend of the family and did various temp jobs each summer. Why was this? Because I had an adoptive mother who believed in the work ethic. There was no way I was allowed to sit on my bum watching the TV and doing nothing else and this seems to be what the youth of today lack. Not all of them of course, the majority of them are well-brought up and at least trying to find work. No work is demeaning. There’s nothing wrong with working at washing up in a “caff”

(I’ve done that too), cleaning the streets and, God knows, the London canals need clearing out. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or a brain surgeon to give something back to society and it doesn’t matter whether you’re black, white or green with pink spots so let’s get the racist issue out of the way too! Sure there aren’t as many jobs around but, from what I see posted in the Job Centres, there is work if you want it – maybe not exactly what you want to do but now is not the time to be that picky and if something comes up that you do want to do, you’re more likely to get picked for it as you’ve made an effort in the past. It’s called having something on your CV. So, what to do? Well, in the first place, the situation has to be contained and there are not enough police to do it so they need to bring in the army. Somebody told me that it is illegal to use water cannon in the UK – something to do with human rights no doubt – but they have forgone their human rights when they started this looting and vandalism, so change the law if needs be. This needs to be stopped, and stopped now. Also, it’s not mindless as described on the TV, these thugs know exactly what they’re doing and are coordinating everything by phone and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Safety at night has already gone and we need to take our streets back. Londoners used to stick together, now they’re too afraid to leave their own homes in some areas. We need to get back the Blitz spirit. I am having to watch my town, as you are watching yours, become a no-go area. As one person said, you see few women doing this, it’s mostly young men whose testosterone levels have gone through the roof and who think they’re entitled to a 52” TV or Puma trainers without handing over a penny for them. They are destroying their own communities and the lives of their neighbours. What has London come to? Maybe boot camps or bringing back conscription would work? This is just my opinion, of course, but a lot are agreeing with me now!

UK News “It’s like the Blitz” Last Thursday, a 29-year-old local man and father of four named Mark Duggan was shot by police in Tottenham, London and a peaceful march to the police station had been arranged by his family and friends to try and find the answers to their questions about how this happened. The 300-strong march was hijacked and the trouble started at 8pm on Sunday with people throwing stones and missiles at police and continued with the burning and looting of businesses, homes, police cars, private cars and a bus along the high street, eventually spreading far and wide throughout the city. An IPCC independent inquiry is being held but it is believed that Mr Duggan fired on a policeman, the bullet lodging in his radio, but many different stories are now hitting the headlines in the UK media. Nobody will know what happened last Thursday until the enquiry is completed. The family of Mr Duggan are asking for peace and saying to the troublemakers: “Do not do this in his name”. On Saturday night a whole block of shops, businesses and people’s homes were destroyed by fire. Resident Stuart Radose whose flat overlooked Tottenham High Road said: “We were watching what was going on and things seemed to calm down around midnight so my wife went off to bed. Luckily I stayed up watching and then it all seemed to escalate. We were going from door to door getting people out of the building as it went up in flames. These are two-bedroomed flats where families with kids live. We all had to flee for our lives leaving everything we had behind.” He added that the fire brigade couldn’t get through the rioters to put out the flames and they just had to watch everything burn with roofs and floors collapsing in on themselves. He added that it looked like scenes he had seen on TV of the Blitz and that “this is the last night we will be spending in Tottenham.” Another resident Rosie Petrusa was in tears as she said: “Another ten minutes
in there and we’d all have been dead.” There were twenty-six flats in the building. It has not been confirmed at time of going to press that everybody managed to escape the blazing buildings and, on Sunday morning, it was feared that the walls of the four-storey building were in danger of collapsing in on themselves making forensic investigations even harder. On Sunday morning, bar owner Niche Nufwankalo went to survey the damage to his premises only to find it full of looters, some carrying knives. He said he escaped through the back of the premises and climbed down a drainpipe to escape them. And Alan McCabe, landlord of a pub in Croyden talked about a “total disregard for human life” – a sentiment that has been echoed by many. The Aldi supermarket and Carpetright, William Hill’s bookmakers and a pub were totally destroyed as were a number of other businesses and the estimated cost of the damage is running into millions of pounds with people hoping that their insurance, if they had any, is going to cover the damage. By Tuesday morning there were pockets of
violence and looting all over the city including Tottenham, Brixton, Hackney, Croydon, Peckham, Lewisham,Ealing and Harrow on the Hill in West London, spreading to some areas of Birmingham and Liverpool. Many locals are very angry with many saying that the army should be brought in to contain the situation. They say they can’t understand why the perpetrators are damaging their own people and communities. One said: “I have been living here twenty years. Why blame the police? It’s the yobs who should look at themselves and what they are doing here.” Blatant looting, with looters not even bothering to cover their faces were seen carrying TV’s, electrical goods, sports equipment and clothing along the streets. One youth even had a supermarket trolly stuffed full of stolen goods. MP’s and police have said these are acts of “Wanton criminality that will be punished to the full extent of the law.”Police cells in the meantime in London have been filled with those arrested and are having to use stations outside the city.

A sign at the base of the unfinished tower claims the funds were used to help
Britain's North American colonies to gain their independence from Great Britain. However, data gleaned from registries indicate that the money was used to build a road to Antequera. The unfinished tower gave the Cathedral its nickname

The Bishop of Malaga plans to “finish” Malaga Cathedral, completing the second tower and the sacristy, using architectural drawings dating back to 1784. The 84-metres high north tower makes Malaga cathedral the second highest in Andalucia, after the Giralda of Seville. The south tower was never finished.

Malaga province has 23 observation points that cover its forest areas, two of which are equipped with cameras that help them spot fires before they get out of hand. One is installed in the Mijas Sierra, within the boundaries of Alhaurin el Grande municipality, and the other is in the Sierra Parda near Ojen. The cameras have a 360º scanning scope that covers all the western Costa del Sol and as far inland as Guaro, Monda and the Guadalhorce Valley. These are the areas which are the most fireprone because of the
many houses scattering the area. The firedetection system has improved vastly since it was installed in 1994. It can currently spot a onemetre square fire ten kilometres away. A spokesman for Malaga's fire prevention plan, Infoca, said this gave the firefighters the advantage
of arriving at a fire within 15 minutes of it being reported. As a result, eight out of 10 fires in the areas covered do not destroy more than one hectare of countryside, giving Malaga province one of the best firefighting records in Andalucia.

Police prevent deportee rescue About 100 members of the local M-15 protest movement gathered outside the Immigrants Internment Centre (CIE) in Malaga on Sunday night in an attempt to stop the deportation of a 28-year-old Algerian. The police broke up the meeting and allegedly punched some of the demonstrators in the face and kicked them, according to their spokesman. Nine members of the M-15 movement were injured and plan to formally denounce the police. The protesters gathered again at 9 am on
Monday morning with the same intention and were again dispersed. This time they alleged the police beat them with their truncheons after cordoning off the area where they were gathered. Humble 'mollete' honoured
Briton arrested for beating kids A Briton living in La Cala de Mijas, identified only as D.E.M., was arrested last week and charged with beating his two sons, aged 14 and 15, who were spending a few days' holiday with him. The two boys had approached two policemen in the street and asked them where they could report their father for beating them. They also said they wanted to be sent home to their mother in Britain. The boys both had bruises and the police escorted them to the health centre, where doctors confirmed that they had been beaten. They were taken into care to await repatriation. The father is in jail, awaiting a hearing.
The town's typical soft, round mollete bun is to be included in the atlas of andalucia's Intangible Heritage, which is being prepared by the Junta de andalucia's cultural department in collaboration with the andalucian Institute of Historic Heritage. The Mollete san roque company has provided the institute with information about a bun that is fast replacing the pitufo in many parts of Malaga province. The atlas, which has been in preparation for the past two years, is due to be published next year. FuenGIroLa

Fit your own 2nd class citizens? air-conditioner! A body representing hundreds of UK pensioners is urging the government to look again at a proposed pension’s shake-up in four years’ time that is likely to make all 14 million current British pensioners secondclass citizens.
The UK Pensioners Forum, a non-political organisation, points out that the government’s plan for an enhanced basic state pension in 2015-16 is only for new pension claimants. Today’s pensioners would still be paid at the current rate, which is far below the EU average.
Is this you? You need a good quality air-conditioner fitted but can’t afford the €700 asking price. The solution is to fit it yourself and save around €300! Local British firm, KOLDAIR supply complete D.I.Y. kits from €335 to €405 depending on the size of the room in which you want the air-conditioner.
Owner John Durkin says: “Any competent amateur can fit these superb aircons in three hours. One 82year-old took a whole week to fit his, working just half an hour a day, but he enjoyed it and saved himself €350! Our kits are pre-gassed and you don’t need a vacuum kit or pressure gauges – just a spanner, a drill and some Polyfiller!” €345 buys you the most popular 9000MF FujimaToshiba model with

brackets, easy-connect copper tubes and cables and, of course, instructions in English. The more powerful 12200MF model for up to 45 square metres costs just €40 more. John beams: “These are the only D.I.Y airconditioning kits in Spain and are selling like hot cakes!”
A UKPF representative said the group is contacting all MPs and many other local and national government figures to deplore this scheme which still leaves pensioners living below the poverty level of £174 per week according to government figures.
Phone John on 605 428 307, see their advert on page 3 or visit their website at www.koldairspain.com for more information.

country’s older citizens. The UK has one of the lowest state pensions in the European Union if not the western world, something this country should be truly ashamed of. Pensioners are no longer shown respect –- their appalling treatment in hospitals and ‘care’ homes in the UK is too well documented to be ignored.” At present, the basic state pension for a single pensioner is roughly £102 per week and the proposed new pension is £155. According to UKPF, the government stands to make a saving of at least £800 million by not increasing the present state pension to the new level for existing pensioners. It also claims that as successive governments have increased the retirement age at which the
state pension can be claimed, fewer people will be retiring in the next few years. By not making the 2015-16 increase inclusive, it seems that today’s pensioners will be paying the price of the increased pension for future retirees. UKPF is encouraging anyone affected by the proposed changes – including other pensioner organisations –- to join their campaign. Angels Nursing Group - peace of mind for you and your loved ones The newest office of Angels Nursing Group was packed for its opening at the Centro Commercial Santangelo, Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmadena on Monday August 8th. Over the last few years the Mojaca-based company Angels Nursing Group have established themselves as a leading British nursing agency in the Almeria region and now, with the opening of their new office in Benalmadena the local expat community will also be able to benefit from their full portfolio of support services. Angels Nursing Group have two main areas of expertise. The first is their innovative emergency support service which offers their members a 24hour-aday, 365 days a year emergency support facility with instant access to a dedicated network of fully qualified British nurses and support staff which enables their members to receive immediate support or medical advice. Enjoying an independent
lifestyle in your own home here in sunny Spain with complete peace of mind is almost certainly a top priority for most residents so, how reassuring would it be to have help immediately at hand for you and your loved ones should any kind of emergency arise? A simple press of the button on an emergency support system care alarm unit or personal help pendant immediately activates a two-way communication with an English speaking emergency trained Angels’ operator at the response centre, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 day every year. If it’s a health matter, you will instantly be put through to a fully qualified professional nurse or paramedic. They will be able to give you, or anyone with you, advice in a language you understand or, in a real emergency, talk you through potentially life-saving instructions. The English speaking on-call nurses are on permanent standby to be dispatched straight to your
home covering an extensive area. And wherever you are, the operator will be able to call out an ambulance to you. As soon as the button on a care alarm unit or personal pendant is activated the system automatically brings up on the operator’s computer screen all the health and personal information on your file including your medical history, medications you take and where they’re stored, contact details for friends, family or neighbours in order of priority and detailed directions on how to get to your property. All this information goes directly to the on-call nurse called out to your home who will meanwhile be at the other end of the twoway communication and can therefore continually give advice even when they are on their way to your property. The second key service offers their clients nursing and home care services in familiar surroundings of the client’s own home. Their team of professional highly
trained British or fluent English speaking nurses provide nursing and care services inclusing “home care service packages” which cover all aspects of personal and post-hospital care and are based on a free initial assessment adapted to the client’s particular needs. Be that one hour a week, 24 hours a day on a regular basis or as a one-off while family members are away. The Angels team also carry out a great deal of their work at local hospitals caring and supporting their clients during hospital stays. In Spanish hospitals, patients’ families are expected to take responsibility for the basic care of their loved ones. But this isn’t always practical. Family members often have other responsibilities and in the case of foreign residents, their loved ones commonly live a long way away. On top of that, for many foreign residents, there is the language barrier issue. Angels nursing group make a hospital stay as easy as possible and an Angel can
be with a client part of the time, just at night, or constantly and they will carry out all the tasks you would expect of a British auxiliary nurse, such as washing and assistance getting out of bed, dressing and eating, and act as translator with the hospital staff. Angels nurses provide advice and health education on a wide range of subjects such as equipment, lifestyle, diet and medication, supporting the client and their family through any trauma, illness or infirmity including long term or terminal conditions. To find out more about the services that Angels Nursing Group offer, visit their offices at the CC Santangelo, Arroyo de la
Miel, next door to the Cudeca Hospice and speak to their team of Angels. You can contact them on 902 02 64 68 or email info@angelsnursinggroup. com or visit their website at www.angelsnursinggroup. com Pictured above is their first member Pia Welgren in the middle with Nicola Wakeman, clinical Director on her left and Marilyn Bevins, Lifestyle Consultant on her right

The Millennium Terrace, suitably decorated in patriotic style, provided a shady setting with views of the sea in which to enjoy the barbecue provided by the resident chefs.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Not so silly season
Turbulence, but no political will
T
T
here's an awful lot of serious stuff going on out there – rioting in the UK, Spain and Italy in the sights of the market speculators, the US losing its triple A credit rating, famine in Somalia – the list is endless. It would all seem to give the lie to what journalists call the “silly season”, that is, the month of August when everybody is supposed to be on holiday and there's no news worth mentioning so they have to dig around to find “silly”, frothy, light or inconsequential stories to fill all those pages.
B
ut that's not the case this year, and we don't have to look abroad for violence, there's plenty of that here in Spain.
Gender violence
probably have the opposite effect, sending more people out to vote for the law and order party – the PP – in November.
Pope's visit
T
he atheists are already on the march – or hope to be if the Madrid authorities let them. They've been refused the three routes they wanted to take in Madrid the day before the Pope is due to arrive there, but may be given an alternative one. I doubt if their numbers amount to more than 100,000 – and that's an optimistic estimate – and it will be interesting to see how the 1.5 million people expected to attend the World Youth Day ceremonies will react if they start wandering around insulting the Pope.
T
But all is not lost for the silly season
M-15
O
he death of another woman at her ex-partner's hands on Monday brought the number of women killed so far this year to 37. Despite all the government's efforts to give women a fair deal, the number who die in this way seems to rise every year.
B
etween six and eight million Spaniards claim to have collaborated in one way or another with the 15-May protest movement, either visiting their camps in different cities or joining in the odd march or two. I wonder how many will be admitting such contacts if the movement gets more violent. Since last week, there have been disturbing confrontations between relatively small groups of protesters and the police, with the former screaming “police brutality”. I should imagine it's not pleasant to be hit with a policeman's truncheon but isn't that what most of these young martyrs are looking for? I said the same thing to my former Spanish fiancé after he spent two nights in jail following a workers' demonstration in Madrid in October 1968. He wouldn't let me go with him and his best friend because if I got picked up by the Guardia I'd be sent straight to the nearest border and kicked out. I suppose I was a bit miffed about missing out on the fun – because that's how you see marches and demonstrations when you're young – so that probably hardened my heart.
I
t will be a pity if the 15-M movement falls into the hands of agitators because so many people see it as an instrument to get rid of political corruption and of forcing the government to do something about unemployment – both of which are fairly Utopian at the moment, but you can live in hope, can't you? However, there is every indication that a hard core are hell bent on making as much trouble as possible for the authorities everywhere in Spain “to bring about the revolution”. It will
he European Central Bank’s attempted rescue of the Spanish and Italian debt markets wasn’t enough to calm the European bourses on Monday. Global stock markets were violently dragged down by the surprise announcement coming out of the United States that the Standard & Poor’s rating
ur beloved prime minister pulled off another PR trick last week. He very graciously delayed going away on holiday last Monday and went on Tuesday instead. Why did he bother, one wonders. What difference does a day make? A lot – because you can then make the supreme sacrifice and leave your wife and kids at the hotel in Doñana and go back to Madrid the next day “to keep an eye on the financial markets”. Right now (Tuesday) his whereabouts are not known so he's probably back in Doñana disguised as former Socialist PM Felipe Gonzalez, who also liked to spend his holidays there.
A
nd the silly season wouldn't be complete without the Duchess of Alba, aka Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart. Please don't ask me where she got that bunch of surnames from because I have no idea – the House of Alba goes back centuries – and I simply don't care enough to delve into the history of the title. What I do know is that this woman, who is one of the richest in Spain – owning more land than anyone else in Europe, in fact – always looks as if she has acquired her clothes at an Oxfam shop. And now, at 85, she intends to marry Alfonso Diez, aged 60, a former – or current – Social Security official, a mere bureaucrat. And to prove that he's marrying her “for love”, the Duchess recently allowed her heirs – five sons and a daughter – to collect the loot they would have got on her death.
A
ctually it was her heirs who said: Come on, hand it all over now and we'll let you marry him. Apparently, they were prepared to have her declared insane rather than let poor young Alfonso get his hands on any of her money or possessions. If you ask me, he's the one who should be certified.
agency was downgrading the US bonds from AAA to AA+ for this first time in 70 years. Last week, the Spanish risk premium spiked well above the psychological 400-limit over the benchmark German Bund on four occasions. By Monday, after the ECB announced that it would actively purchase Spanish and Italian debt to head off contagion in the euro zone and calm the money markets, the bourses failed to react accordingly and stocks fell sharply on the blue chip Ibex-35 for a new annual low. S&P’s downgrade of America ’s sterling rating was too much of a blow for the markets to sustain.
T
he move by Jean-Claude Trichet(pictured below), the ECB president, to head off a disaster with his debt-purchasing programme is only a short-term solution and investors know this. When the ECB cashes in on those bonds – if it ever does – the Spanish treasury will have to pay up and with high interest. Whether it will be in a condition to do so will depend how well this economy survives the current battering by the time those notes mature. It is almost similar to when a person with no cash flow uses a credit card with a higher interest rate to pay off another account that has been maxed out. One debt may have been satisfied, keeping bill collectors at bay for now, but there is still another loan that will have eventually to be paid off and with no doubt higher monthly payments. The ECB may never cash in on the debt in order to keep from deepening the continent-wide crisis. Trichet said on Tuesday that the central bank was purchasing debt on the secondary markets and not directly from the distressed states, such as Spain, Italy, Portugal and Ireland. Still, the unprecedented debt-buying spree – rumoured to be around €5 billion in Spanish and Italian bonds – could cause some financial turbulence for the euro zone’s economic giants, Germany and France.
H
ere at home, there are still no political solutions. The Partido Popular (PP) is still only hedging its bets on early elections, believing they
will be the country’s direct salvation because they will usher in a change of policy to please investors. That is wishful thinking on behalf of PP leader Mariano Rajoy. External forces are holding the fuse of the financial powder keg Spain is sitting on. And it is up to the nation’s politicians to do their part and agree on urgent fiscal measures to restore investor confidence in this country. Early elections are also a short-term solution, and the Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero also knows this. His cabinet is working hard in these last months to prevent Spain from going bust.
E
conomy Minister Elena Salgado has announced that the Cabinet next week will introduce a new package of measures, including one that intends to hike the corporate tax rate on profits by 35 percent for the last quarter of this year. She suggests that the additional money she hopes to collect – some €2.5 billion – will help keep the government on the mark to honour its deficitreduction commitments. But many, including the organisation of tax inspectors, are wondering if this is a good time to put the strain on businesses when capital financing is at a stand-still.
Y
es, we are in the middle of a muddied mess but not in dire straits. The situation is serious but not impossible to solve. What seems more hopeless is trying to get the PP and the Socialists to set aside their bickering and work together in an urgent manner to demonstrate to investors that there is political will in this country. One of reasons S&P gave for the US downgrade last week was the stand-off between Republicans and Democrats, to come up with a solid debt-reduction package – a heated debate that nearly shut down the government in Washington at the end of July. A S&P representative told CNN on Monday that if there are some signs of solidarity in fiscal policy the agency might consider reviewing the US rating. The market punishment Spain and the rest of Europe have been through this past week should also be enough to budge our politicians. But even with so much pain, uncertainty and fear, they have yet to take notice.

News Fantastic support Show pays for beds Two cancer support agencies; Prostate Cancer Support Group Gibraltar and Breast Cancer Support Gibraltar shared in the proceeds from the midnight charity Lunar Walk that made over £3,500 this year. PCSG’s share will be going towards setting up a special “Prostate Clinic” within the St Bernards hospital plus their ongoing community work. The
Breast Cancer group will put it towards buying an ultrasound machine for their One-Stop Breast Clinic radiology service. Everybody said they were extremely pleased with the amount of sponsorship raised and thanked all those who organised the event, took part in the walk and, of course, all the sponsors who gave so generously.
Who is Baxterbear? The original Baxterbear was an army mascot in 1928 and was shot down with his carer, a co-pilot called Baxter – hence the name – while flying over Burma on a reconnaissance mission. It took five days to get Baxterbear back and he was operated on by sewing a piece of tartan material over his missing ear that had been shot off. The hardworking little bear has since carried out innumerable missions raising money for the charity that was then known as The Army Benevolent Fund, now The Soldiers’ Charity, going all over the world meeting many VIP’s in the process. Baxter visited Gibraltar with his current carer Major Zoe White, second in charge of a UK based signals regiment who has already been deployed to Afghanistan twice and is due to ship out for a third tour in a few weeks time. She was on the Rock visiting her parents and to raise awareness of the charity. They met the new Gibraltar Mayor, Julio
Alvantara who also presented Zoe with a crystal memento. Of course, with so many people to see and places to go, Baxter these days has an army of helpers (one of which is pictured above) in all different shapes and sizes raising money and awareness for his charity. Baxter’s favourite food is, of course, Scottish shortbread but we think he’s probably quite fond of haggis too! He is soon to meet Prince Charles and would love some Dutchy of Cornwall shortbread to try out – it’s not Scottish but it’s very good!
Calpe House in Chiselhurst, Kent was set up for the relief of sick persons who have been referred for treatment in the United Kingdom under the government of Gibraltar medical health scheme and who by reason of their financial circumstances would not otherwise be able to travel to the United Kingdom to
receive such treatment. They now have more than 20 brand new beds thanks to the proceeds of “Variety Live” staged in Gibraltar in March, produced by Stage One.
Tourist offices in Gibraltar are located in Casemates Square, the Airport Arrivals Hall, the coach terminus and the cruise terminal and at the frontier.
Overall the show raised more than £8,000 that has been shared by Calpe House and Great Ormond Street Hospital for children.

Bear attack The 17-year-old British boy, Horatio Chapple, who was mauled to death by the Polar Bear on a Norwegian island last week was the grandson of the former Governor of Gibraltar, Field Marshall Sir John Chapple. Horatio, who was studying medicine at Eton was among 12 students on the exploration trip with the British Schools Exploring Society. Four others were hurt in the incident.
16-year-old Patrick Flinders from Jersey arrived back in the UK on Monday. He has needed extensive surgery to head injuries including the removal of teeth from the bear that had been lodged in his skull. Patrick punched the 250 kg bear in the face to try and ward it off. Scott Bennel-Smith suffered a broken jaw and lost teeth in the attack. Michael Reid, 29 shot the bear dead.

Wine making and tasting - in Ronda There have been vines in the Ronda area since before Roman times when the ancient town of Acinipo used coinage featuring a bunch of grapes. Written by Jean Joss
T
oday the area boasts a number of wineries, most of whom cater for the tourist trade by offering guided tours and tastings. On their last outing before the summer break the U3A (University of the Third Age) Inland Social Group visited the vineyards of Bodega Joaquín Fernández – to learn about ecological wine making and sample the products.
F
inca los Frutales, some three kilometres outside Ronda, can be seen from the main Seville road, its seried rows of vines standing out on the hillside sloping down to the river. The area, known as the Paraje los Frontones is 2,300 feet above sea level and faces south-southwest, conditions which are apparently good for growing grapes. Our guide, resident
winemaker Juan Bernal (who speaks good English and even better French since he studied in the French vineyards), explained that the four hectares of vineyard now produce organic grapes certified by the Andalusian Committee of Organic Agriculture.
G
rowing organically is a year-round project. The vineyard is planted with aromatic plants such as rosemary, thyme and lavender to attract the right kind of insects - particularly those which prey upon destructive pests. The ground is fertilised in the autumn with compost and vegetation is allowed to grow throughout the winter, providing nitrogen and preventing soil erosion. Sheep are then herded through the vines, eating the
weeds and providing natural fertiliser. On a blazing hot day at the end of June it was hard to believe that it gets so cold up here but the photographs of flocks in a snowy wasteland proved otherwise!

of just two weeks that they were given. At one bar the police came out because people were laughing on the terrace at only 8.45 pm. This was in a full street of bars but they only called there. Allegedly they are checking British bar paperwork on average five times a week." Artiste Mel Willams said: “I have been entertaining on the coast for 36 years. I have made music for 50 years. I've had a great run but where are the up and coming artistes going to work? Where are the older very talented entertainers going to perform? Do we all have to emigrate to Benidorm that is thriving with live music? I support "Keep Music Live." As long as there is a voice or an instrument on stage we are leaving a heritage.” It has been suggested that bar owners ask their suppliers to put notices on and in the windows of their delivery vans as, if British bars have to close through lack of customers, it will have a knock-on effect on Spanish suppliers – no bars = no deliveries needed = no custom for Spanish suppliers! Wonder if they’ve thought of that! Another artiste wrote:”this is a totally unworkable decibel level for music. As artistes we have to do something quickly if we want to continue making a living.” There is going to be a peaceful protest against these rulings, the date of which will be announced soon and an email for bar owners, venues, artistes etc to send your problems to enable the owners to compile some sort of dossier to present to the powers that be has been set up at keepmusicliveandalucia@g mail.com

No more live music? Mojacar in Almeria province has seen the local council decide that all beach bars in the area can’t go above 55 decibels of noise. Just to give you an idea of what 55 decibels is, here is an example: a whisper inside a quiet library is around 30 decibels, a normal conversation 60-70, and a telephone dial tone is around 80 decibels. Bassist Kev Moore in Mojacar has even written a protest song already! Lisa Nicol, vice president of El Faro Live, Supporting Cuidad de los Niños, tweeted Monday that local band Costa Rock gave up their time freely to go and play a one-hour spot for them for their big annual charity fundraiser for the kids’ orphanage in Malaga. She said: “This was a daytime event and the band went on at 3.30pm. Just after 4 they had to stop playing because the police turned up and pulled the plug on the music due to a complaint. This is happening all over the coast and needs to be stopped now!” Jo Green said of the incident: “ This is getting beyond silly! Come on people stand up and SHOUT about this. They will be stopping ferias next, then if you sing in your own home and a neighbour hears you can you be done for that too? I just cannot get my head round this, especially in the afternoon and for charity!” Another report from Fuengirola said: “One small bar had to remove its TV's sound system etc, there’s a €300 euro fine for “A” Boards on the pavements, two bars closed because they could not replace two doors for financial reasons in a space

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Director: Rupert Wyatt Starring: James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto An original story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Desperate to help his Alzheimer’s stricken father (John Lithgow) as well as to find a historic and profitable cure, GenSys scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) is
experimenting with his new Alzheimer drug ALZ 112 on a female chimpanzee which looks promising – but ultimately fails when the chimp has to be killed after a wild attack on handlers. Will then discovers the chimp had just given birth to a baby, which in the absence of options at the GenSys lab he takes home – he thinks temporarily. Calling him Caesar (Andy
Serkis) Will cares for him for several years as he charts increased intelligence and communication skills. He also meets primatologist Caroline (Freida Pinto) with whom he begins a relationship. After developing a stronger version of the drug ALZ 113, Will's plans go badly wrong, with Caesar having to be placed in an
animal facility for primates, run by John Landon (Brian Cox). The film is merely a very enjoyable summer blockbuster that tells the story of apes who rise above their limitations. At its best, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is one of the most surprising and refreshing special effects extravaganzas of the season.

We are the boys and girls well known as, Minors of the ABC. And every Saturday we line up, to see the films we like, And shout aloud with glee. We love to laugh and have a sing - song, Such a happy crowd are we. We’re all pals together, we’re Minors of the ABC. (To the tune of 'Blaze Away')
aurel and Hardy films were a firm favourite of mine and I wonder what the kids of today would make of them. I haven’t seen a Laurel and Hardy film on the T.V. schedules for years, maybe I have just missed them. But if I close my eyes, I can see their antics as clear as day.
B
uster Keaton and the Keystone Cops just had me giggling all the way through and it wasn’t until later in life that I discovered just how dangerous those stunts were and even more amazing to me was the fact that Buster did most of them himself. The swinging ladders, walking with panes of glass (or pretending to) crazy car chases and hanging off precarious lampposts, all added to the fun and excitement on a Saturday morning.
N
ot many people know that Buster wrote, produced and directed most of his films as well as being the main stunt man. Born to a travelling show family, he grew up in the field of entertainment and
after a chance meeting with Fatty Arbuckle, his first role in film was in 1917 where he was hired as a co star in “The Butcher Boy”. His first starring role was in 1920 in a film called “The Saphead”. I think the most famous scene that we all would remember is where Buster runs on to set and the façade of a building falls on to him. You may recall it was an open window that saved him from serious injury. This stunt required precision timing and it is probably one of the most iconic scenes from the whole of Buster’s career.
T
he serials that kept me going back were the likes of The Mask of Zorro, and the countless madcap adventures with the Marx Brothers. I didn’t immediately realise that they were real brothers but upon a little research, I discovered that they were indeed siblings and incredibly talented too. All of them were gifted with the ability to play a variety of musical instruments and even Groucho was a singer and pianist. Groucho’s first performance was in 1905 and the brothers continued making mirth up till the late 1950s.
A
ll this, together with the high camp versions of Batman and Robin, the escapades of Flash Gordon and the simple life of that clean cut “All American Boy” Huckleberry Finn, just kept me out of trouble for a couple of hours. And, of course, we can’t forget the sweets that went with it. From the teeth-rotting Fruit Salads and Black Jacks, Bubble Gum and Sherbet Dips to those wonderful Flying Saucers and Gobstoppers.

Tensions could be running high this week due to things not making that much sense. You could be wondering which way to turn and what to do. Old memories are likely to be stimulated and could leave you feeling a little sensitive around the edges, particularly in matters of the heart. Perhaps you should use this time for reflection instead of action until things seem a little clearer. Financial issues take a turn for the better when planning and detail become second nature. It could feel as though you are grappling around in the dark this week when you have no clear indication of what is going to happen, not sure where the obstacles may present themselves. As unclear as these days may feel, there are some things that are certain. Home improvements loom and renovations, tidying, clearing are waiting some action from you - while you are getting on with the mundane other situations will start to become clear. This is a great week for brainstorming and coming up with creative options that are far better than the ones you have been working on. There is some emotional and tense pressure building as the feeling of an imminent deadline comes closer. Just remember that all the problems of the world cannot be solved within a week but you do have the power to put a dent into something that you once thought never had a fighting chance. There is something that you need to confront although it is far easier to pretend that whatever needs confronting does not really exist. There are some tough choices that may have to be made. By the weekend you will feel a rush of motivational energy soaring through your veins; this can result in you being restless, super charged and feisty. Sometimes you have to be tough on those you love to make them realise how much you love them. Your attraction levels are at a peak right now, Venus is still in your sign and giving you the sunny charm and magnetic glow that warms others towards you. There is the potential for you to achieve far more than you would ever think you could as your creativity is sky high – it helps you feel a little lighter and brighter. These are feel-good days and it is about time you felt some relief and had some loving feedback, time to heal that old wound. It may feel as though people are behaving very oddly at the moment - one minute you thought you knew where you were and now because of their unusual behaviour you could feel out on a limb. You were feeling comfortable and now Mercury is moving in a retrograde motion, this is your ruling planet – it is telling you that it is time to look for openings then run with it. When you feel uncomfortable it can cause changes to happen. A nutty week with loads of potential.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
As there are still some marrows about, we might as well use them up with a delicious recipe. So here’s one for "Ham Stuffed Marrow” that serves 4 and only takes 25 minutes to make. The recipe can be used for some squashes too so, as pumpkins are beginning to appear, you can use it for them as well, as long as they’re not too big.
Ham Stuffed Marrow Ingredients: ● 1 marrow (about 1.5kg/3lb 5oz in weight) ● 25g/1oz butter, cut into cubes ● 6 tbsp ready-made tomato pasta sauce ● about 10 slices wafer-thin ham ● 4 eggs ● 85g/3oz Double Gloucester or Cheddar cheese grated
Directions 1. Pre-heat oven to 190C/Gas 5 (fan oven 170C). 2. Peel and halve the marrow (lengthways) and scoop out the seeds. 3. Put in a shallow microwave-proof dish, dot with butter and season. Cover with cling film, pierce several times and cook on high for 7 minutes, until tender.
4. Spoon the tomato sauce into each marrow half. 5. Arrange the ham on top. 6. Break two eggs into each half and sprinkle with cheese. 7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the eggs are softly set and the cheese has melted and turned golden.
For a non-alcoholic and very refreshing drink, try this: Take the juice of four lemons, add the juice of two limes, two tablespoonfuls of sugar and three mint sprigs. Mix with a wooden spoon until most of the sugar has dissolved then keep it in your fridge. When you’re ready to drink it, put a load of crushed ice in your glass pour some of the mixture over the ice, depending on how strong you want it, and top up with Casera or fizzy water.... soooo refreshing!

There is always a way through no matter what is happening, even if we cannot see the route – it is there. It has been a week of pressure, restriction and tests for you. You have been pushed further but have risen to the challenge, amazing yourself at what you are made of. Even though it may feel as though you are walking this path alone, you are not - there is a lot of support out there rd September 23 you just have to ask. Creative solutions to troubling situations are to be found nd October 22 soon.
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
Someone in your world may not see things as you do but peace is within reach and a mutually beneficial compromise is definitely possible. It just requires an act of commitment on your part - perhaps they are not sure as to where you stand on things. Sometimes you play it safe but most of the time once you have let something brood, you go at it full throttle and there is no holding back. Stay calm this week and try to view the situation objectively.
SAGITTARIUS At this moment in time you could be feeling as though you are facing challenges but at the same time feel uplifted and as though you have a direction and purpose. The energy around you right now is positive but when things get too easy you could get careless, with many temptations starting to appear to throw you off track. On the other hand if you rise above the lethargy nd November 22 December 21st and remain focused then all sorts of miracles can happen.
CAPRICORN Someone close to you is triggering emotions that you would rather lay dormant. Perhaps you feel insecure for some reason, is it them or is it you? In truth we attract people whose nature reflects something that we need to deal with inside of ourselves. So this week someone is standing on your last nerve – practice patience, cultivate compassion and love unconditionally but nd December 22 establish your bottom lines. Remember you are important. th January 19

Things may get slightly worse before they get better in terms of the mental obstacle you have been putting your heart and soul through. You may be wondering if you should have taken another route to the one you chose - the support that you are receiving will be an indication of how on track you are. Do not be too hard upon yourself and don’t analyse life too much. For you the finalisation of a long process is not far away – exercise patience.
You may have once thought you knew someone only to find out that you were disillusioned so you remain confused and misunderstanding and misinterpretations can build. The problem is there is a void between you and them and you have no idea as to how they think or feel. You tend to look for the best in people and when you see their other side it can feel a real let down. Keep your feet firmly on the ground and do what you have to do.

LOOK AFTER THE CHILDREN
Marley’s back! Seventies’ legend Bob Marley is set to help the children of Africa from beyond the grave. Bob Marley’s 1973 “High Tide, Low Tide” is being used on a new video to try and get people to donate to the Save The Children Fund to help the children of Africa survive the humanitarian catastrophe that has hit the area. It has been reported that just under thirty thousand children have died and many more are starving to death – over 10 million are short of food. The new video has huge
backing from such stars as Beyonce, Queen, Madonna, J Lo and Lady Gaga with the stars posting the video, directed by award-winning Kevin McDonald, on their Facebook pages asking as many others as possible to do the same. The Marley family have said: “Not one child should be denied food nor water. Not one child should suffer from the conflict caused by grown men. Over three million women and children are
suffering. They are innocent. They are not political. They are starving. Bob Marley, then and now stands for an Africa United, for one love, for the protection of children worldwide. Cancer patients should exercise
Live your life to the full Villa Jacaranda in Alhaurin de la Torre is a wonderful care home that has been successfully running since 2001 and Jacaranda stands out against the rest because of the owners’ and staff’s passion for providing the best care possible to their residents.
All patients undergoing treatment for cancer should be told to do two and a half hours of physical exercise every week, according to a report by Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity said being advised to rest and take it easy after treatment is an outdated view, because research has shown that that exercise can reduce the risk of dying from cancer and minimise the side effects of treatment. The report, Move More, said that of the two million cancer survivors in the UK, around 1.6 million are not physically active enough. Getting active, the report said, can help people overcome the effects of cancer and its treatment, such as fatigue and weight gain. Previous research has shown that exercising to the recommended levels can reduce the risk of
breast cancer recurring by 40%. For prostate cancer the risk of dying from the disease is reduced by up to 30%. Bowel cancer patients' risk of dying from the disease can be cut by around 50% by doing around six hours of moderate physical activity a week. A spokesman for the charity said the physical activity didn't have to be anything too strenuous, that doing the gardening, going for a brisk walk or a swim, all counted.
Martine and Iain who took over ownership of Jacaranda in March this year, have kept all the original caring staff and their motto is “Whatever it takes to get the job done right”. Staff members have a variety of specialised care expertise so that everyone at Jacaranda can be assured of the best care they could possibly want or need. The care home offers all British, English-speaking staff but also have Spanish, German and Dutch speakers among them. With a family atmosphere that focuses on their residents as individuals with a variety of strengths, everyone has

something to offer and that is the strength of Jacaranda. The en-suite rooms have been tastefully decorated with matching or coordinated bedding and curtains and two of the rooms have a balcony overlooking the pool or grounds. A large patio with shady gazebo adds to the quality of life and enjoyment at staying there. Martine and Iain have also added trips out to do some shopping or visit a restaurant – an addition much appreciated by the residents. If a resident wants to do something, they just have to let them know and they will do it if it’s possible. Martine and Iain believe in asking: “What do YOU want to do today?” Jacaranda welcomes you to go and have some lunch, have a look around and see if this is the ideal place for your loved one. On Saturday, August 20th from 11am to 6pm Jacaranda are holding an Open Day for you to come along to. You can speak to the staff and also to representatives from the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA), The Royal British Legion and Age Care. Go along and ask any questions you like! Have a wander around the grounds and the house with one of the staff and you will be able to see just how good Jacaranda is – you will not be disappointed! Plus…. there’s a prize raffle to take part in. Proceeds will go to age-related charities. But Jacaranda is not just a residential care home with tailor-made care services for each resident. They offer Home Care covering the Costa del Sol, looking after seniors and older adults, that can offer families and carers respite from caring duties so that you too can have a rest to go out shopping, have lunch with friends – whatever you want to do, but safe in the knowledge that your loved one is in the
best possible hands while you’re doing it – have time out and feel safe and guilt free while you’re at it. A rare thing indeed! Home Care also looks after those who need domestic or personal assistance, plus people with dementia and Alzheimer’s – lending a much needed hand to their families and friends. Jacaranda Home Care can help people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties and people who are convalescing after an illness or operation. They can assist with getting up, washing, bathing and dressing, with toileting shaving and hairdressing. Their staff will carry out light housework, make your beds and change the linen, do the laundry and ironing, pick up prescriptions, plan and prepare meals, wash up and tidy everything away. On top of all these, they will also do all your shopping, look after pets and plants and generally look after you in your own home, all as part of their Home Care service. Jacaranda also provides Companionship Services to seniors and older adults where staff will help with a day and night time sitting service, assist with night time tuck-in, morning wake-up, go on walks with
you and help with any exercise. They will also assist with payment of bills, making appointments and accompanying you to and from them, plan visits, outings, social and leisure activities, and escort you on visits to clubs, theatre, concerts and sporting events etc. In short, Jacaranda Residential Care Home, their Home Care and their Compansionship Services all allow you and your loved ones to live your lives to the fullest. Our new website(we used to discuss via The Pensioners Forum UK) is dedicated to constructive lobbying of the government of the day for a new basic State Pension(BSP) fit for the 21st century. One that lifts pensioners out of poverty and means testing and eventually gives parity with the much higher pensions paid to other pensioners in EU member states. The average EU pensioner gets £300 to £330 p.w. i.e. 11.2% of GDP(UK pays only 6.5% of GDP).
the EU countries. BPA was founded by retired local residents Denise (Dee) Chesson and Rachelle (Ray) Hughes. Dee can be contacted on Tel 952486420 and Ray can be contacted by email on randrspain@hotmail.com. Dee, Ray and her husband Roy, are active in uniting UK pensioners living in the EU to support this fight. We all want – and need – a substantially improved BSP and we urge you to join this fight that will benefit all UK pensioners wherever they live.
We would like to introduce our affiliate British Pensioners Abroad (BPA) who feature on our website and will continue to post information there to assist UK pensioners living in
It is not the fault of pensioners today that successive governments have failed to make proper provisions for our retirement. We paid our dues in good faith
Brian Cave Further to the letters in your paper about pensions, I read your newspaper online here in France and would like to add the following: You may already have added your support to the Votes for Britons campaign at h t t p : / / v o t e s - f o r- e x p a t brits.com, in which case future generations will thank you. It is absolutely extraordinary to my mind, how it can be that so
that the money contributed would be invested and saved to provide for our retirement. There is strength in numbers and, come the next election we intend to make the government listen to the grey vote of 14 million pensioners. The government has four years to address these issues and we have four years to make sure they do so by uniting behind this campaign. So we urge you to register your support for the campaign by visiting our web site www.pensionercampaignuk.o rg.uk Presently the site is a work in progress and should be accessed via the address bar and not via Google.

e Tale Of A Comet Comets are best described as being huge dirty snowballs ranging in size from a few metres up to hundreds of kilometres.
T
hey are the remnants of the creation of the solar system and usually live on the very edge of our solar system in an area known as the Oort cloud. But this week the earth is going to crash into the tail of one such comet!
T
Gourdon, France many Britons are apathetic in this matter. Read the 180 comments or so which are displayed (in two separate locations) on the website above to see the depth of feeling which some other expats have. And yet there are five million expats throughout the world. Most expatriates obviously have not seen this stuff. Others who have, think it cannot have much to do with
Stargazing
them. Perhaps if they had experienced extreme dictatorship or invasion of their homeland, they would think differently. I urge you to add your name to this campaign, and to encourage others to do likewise. This campaign is headed by a consortium of groupings and associations both of a general nature and political. If this opportunity is allowed to slip – then byebye to proper democracy for the British expatriate for very many years. Indeed – Your Country Needs You – even though it does not realise it. Editor says: This is getting to be a truly International campaign now. British pensioners, and soon to be pensioners shouldn’t be ripped off. They have paid their dues so are entitled to a fair pension.

here are literally millions of comets floating around at the extreme edge of the sun’s gravitational reach, but every now and then something will happen that causes one of them to be nudged in slightly where the Sun’s gravity can grasp it and begin dragging it in further towards the inner solar system. As the comet gets closer to the sun it begins to vaporise and gasses and dust begin to stream away from the comet nucleus creating the famous comet’s tail.
T
he tail can stretch for many millions of miles into space but it always blows in a direction away from the sun no matter which way the comet is travelling. Some comets crash into the sun, some are swung around the sun and cast back into deep space, never to be seen again, while others are thrown into an elongated orbit around the sun that sees them returning over periods of time from a few years to once in a lifetime like Halley’s comet. These are known as the periodic comets.
A
comet is usually named after the person who first discovers it and one particular periodic comet called SwiftTuttle is a 26-mile-wide comet that returns every 133 years. Its last return was in 1992 and it won’t be back again until 2126 so most of us won’t be around for it by then. But the thing about comet SwiftTuttle is that the debris left behind from its tail happens to cross over the path of the earth’s orbit. This debris is made from billions of tiny pieces of rock and ice no bigger than grains of sand and this week is the time that we will pass right through it.
A
s the tiny pieces of comet smash into the upper atmosphere at many thousands of miles an hour then they will burn up causing a brief streak of light across the sky called a meteor. This coming Friday, 12th August, is the peak of what has become know as the famous Perseid meteor shower. The Perseids have been observed every year for thousands of years and in some years
they have produced hundreds of meteors an hour streaking across the sky, 1972 was particularly active with thousands of meteors shooting across the sky creating a meteor storm.
U
nfortunately this year’s peak falls on the same night as the full moon so only the brightest meteors will be visible but it may still be worth having a look if you have never seen a shooting star before. You don’t need any special equipment to observe the Perseids, just lie back on a reclining chair or sun lounger and look up. You may see meteors streaking across any part of the sky but if you follow an imaginary line backwards then they all seem to originate from the constellation of Perseus in the eastern sky – hence the name the Perseids.
P
redicting meteor showers is not an exact science as the comet debris trail is many millions of miles wide and so Perseid meteors can be seen any time between the 9th and the 14th August. They are also more prevalent in the hours before dawn when your part of the earth is facing directly into the path of the cloud. The meteor trails have the appearance of fine gossamer as they flash across the sky and the brighter ones can sometimes leave a ghostly trail in their wake.
B
ut if you do happen to see a shooting star then be sure to make a wish as they always come true!

A very sunny July for Spain’s SEAT SEAT’s relentless sales growth in the UK continues apace with the news today that the Spanish brand has notched up more all-time records there. Year-to-date sales of 21,228 new cars is an all-time best, underlining the fact that SEAT’s success in July is no statistical blip. Ibiza and Leon continue to be the Spaniards’ star performers, with everything from high performance FR and Cupra versions to high economy Ecomotive models all contributing to the impressive total.
La Vuelta returns to the Basque Country For the first time in 33 years, the 2011 race is set to return to the region considered by many to be Spain’s cycling heartland, with stages in the Basque region. “It’s going to pass through my small town, streets where I played as a child, and all my family and friends will be able to come out and watch,” said Igor Antón, a Basque cyclist who rides for Euskaltel-Euskadi, that is considered the region’s unofficial team and partly funded by the Basque government. “It’s the last week of the tour and there is going to be tension, but I’m
going to pull out everything I’ve got from inside. “For more than 30 years La Vuelta hasn’t come here, so it’s something the fans deserve.” Beginning in Benidorm on August 20th, the 66th edition of the race will cover 3,295 kilometres, or 2,047 miles, and feature 21 stages across Spain. The race will include a September 9th finish in Bilbao and a September 10th finish in the Basque capital of Vitoria before ending in Madrid, as it traditionally does, the following day. The

announcement in January that the Spanish cycling classic – one of the three grand tours, alongside the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia – would include two mountainous treks in the northern region came just two days after ETA, the Basque separatist group, announced a cease-fire after 40 years of a bloody campaign for independence. 1978 was the last time the Tour of Spain passed through the country’s northern region but organisers had to call off the
Bean there and done that final Basque stage after it was disrupted by separatists who barricaded the race course, and littered the roads with nails and planks of wood. “We were coming around a dangerous curve near Durango and they were rolling tree trunks from the slopes to block the road,” said José Enrique Cima, a former cyclist who raced in the peloton that day. “Since then,” he said, “La Vuelta has never gone back.” Until now that is.
Brit recovers to take podium place in Spanish Supermoto
Rowan Atkinson escapes with a broken shoulder as 240mph supercar smashes into tree and bursts into flames Comedy star Rowan Atkinson has been involved in a real-life disaster, crashing his 240mph supercar as he drove home from work on a spoof spy movie. Mr Atkinson lost control of his McLaren F1, careering across the carriageway and into a tree and a road sign before the £635,000 sports car burst into flames. He had managed to escape from the wreckage when the flames took hold in the engine bay. Atkinson was taken to hospital with a fractured shoulder after the incident. The star left Peterborough City Hospital
in a wheelchair and without comment. Onlookers said he was manoeuvred into the back of a Harley Street private ambulance and driven away. The accident comes a month after the renowned ‘petrol head’ set the fastest time on a lap of the Top Gear track during the BBC motoring show’s ‘star in a reasonably priced car’ segment. The incident on the A605 at Haddon in Cambridgeshire is the second time the comedian has crashed the F1, which he bought in 1997 following the success of his Mr Bean film.
Superb second place for expat Anthony Ford-Dunn in the Spanish supermoto championship in Villena, Valencia.
Anthony Ford-Dunn on the podium
The Spanish supermoto championship visited the Chicharra circuit at Villena, Valencia on Saturday the 30th July for the 3rd round of the championship. Britain’s Anthony Ford-Dunn who lives in Bullas, Murcia was hoping to improve on his previous race results at Oliva in May. A last lap crash had left Anthony in hospital with a serious concussion and his championship in tatters, as his main rival scored a win and Anthony came away with no points and a thumping headache. Anthony was determined to get his championship fight back on track at Villena, a track that suits his style of riding. Qualifying went well and he positioned himself in 2nd place on the grid for the first of two races. After a
hectic first couple of laps Anthony was in a comfortable 2nd place when disaster struck! Locos por El Futbol Spain is a brilliant growing ground for football talents. They have some of the best academies in the world, such as Barcelona’s and Real Madrid’s, which provide footballers for all of La Liga and many other leagues all over the world. This week I thought that I would look at some of the big Spanish stars that have made it from the Spanish training grounds to the Barclays Premier League.
David Silva, 25, is a former Valencia and current Manchester City winger. He is an exceptional dribbler with great one-on-one skills but also has the ability to pin point a pass from almost anywhere on the pitch. It is only his first season at the Citizens and has already become one of their biggest stars. David has scored six
goals and has made 15 assists in a total of 53 games. Danny Pacheco, 20, is a young attacking midfielder born in the Malaga town of Pizarra. He progressed as a footballer at Malaga and Barcelona F.C’s youth academies, where they nicknamed him El Asesino (The Assassin) for his great ability to score goals from almost anywhere on the pitch. He currently plays for Liverpool F.C’s First and Reserve teams. Danny also spent half of last season on loan at Championship runners-up, Norwich City, where he scored two goals in six appearances.
Fernando Torres, 27, also known as El Niño, is an incredibly talented footballer who has everything a striker needs. He’s fast, strong, great in the air and has great
technique. Fernando started his career at Atletico de Madrid where he became captain at just 19 years of age, scoring 91 goals in 249 appearances. After seven years at Atletico he joined Liverpool F.C, where in less than one season he became one of their biggest stars. El Niño left the Reds in January this year for rival club Chelsea. After four years at Liverpool he had an amazing record of 81 goals in 142 appearances. At Chelsea though, he has disappointed the fans by only scoring one goal in 14 games, with a ten game goal-less run from the minute he put on the Blues top. Fernando says that he is yet to adapt to the team and that he is aiming to prove himself this season.
It will be interesting to see how these Spanish talents develop as the English Premier League season progresses. Written by Nathan Kelly
First skills improvement This session at La Posada Bowling Club Antequera At the invitation of Eileen Alves, Club Captain, John Carr, Coordinator for Malaga province Instructors’ Group, ran the first session in July of intensive training for bowlers at the recently opened La Posada BC, situated near Antequera. The weather was hot and very challenging, but not too hot to melt the enthusiasm of large group of participants that turned out. The subjects included: casting the jack, improving weight, using other bowls in the head, improving line and exposure to some of the more important laws and etiquette of the game of lawn bowls. John managed to ease the problems of excessive heat by holding discussions under shade between each drill. Volunteer rink controllers did an excellent job. The attendees included Eileen Alves, Jeff Rowe, Janis Rowe, Dave Way, Bill Hill, Marion Robinson, Stuart Robinson, Peter Williams, Jean Williams, Lou Edwards, Geoff Gooding, Maureen

IOC 'confident' over safety at games The International Olympic Committee (IOC) insists it has 'complete confidence' over safety at the 2012 Olympic Games. London was hit by a third night of violence on Monday with shops looted and cars and buildings set alight. An IOC spokesman said security is a top priority but that it was not its direct responsibility. "That is something for the authorities in London in whom we have complete confidence," he said.
Caddy Williams out of order ? Riots force the FA Tiger’s ex caddy Steve Williams didn't hit any of the shots during his new boss Adam Scott's victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone last weekend but the way he soaked up the spotlight and indulged the media afterward you'd think he had. That's a definite no-no for caddies, and Williams will take some criticism for milking his moment, and taking the limelight away from Adam Scott who had played magnificent golf all week, but really, what choice did he have? Fans in Akron chanted "Stev-ie Will-iams" as a gesture of support for the veteran caddie, whom Tiger Woods fired in July.
to cancel matches England's friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley tonight (Weds) has been called off following three nights of rioting in London. The Football Association confirmed the decision on their website on Tuesday. Carling Cup matches at Charlton, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bristol City have all been postponed.

In caddie lingo that means you are fired!” Woods said in an interview that the break-up transpired 'face-to-face and man-to-man' after the AT&T National tournament ended on July 3th. “That is incorrect,” Williams said. “I was told on the phone that we needed to take a break.” Asked if the break extended to his friendship with Woods, Williams said: “That’s it. You’ve got it.”

However, Edgbaston officials say the third Test between England and India starting in Birmingham on Wednesday will go ahead as planned. The Premier League has had talks with the police over this weekend's matches involving London clubs but believe it is too early for a decision to be taken. The FA's managing director of Club England Adrian Bevington wrote on Twitter: "Disappointing for game to be called off, but

very good communication with Met (Metropolitan Police), Brent (Council) and Government today a sensible decision." Bert van Oostveen, chief executive of the Dutch federation the KNVB, explained: "The police in London could not guarantee the safety of our players and our supporters." The England team were still planning to train as normal at London Colney on Tuesday morning, before returning to their respective clubs. England general manager Franco Baldini told BBC Sport: "At least we got the chance to stay together and have a training session. "We are a bit disappointed – but mainly because of what has happened to London. All the rest is not that important. The next time we'll get together will be before the Bulgaria game on 29th August."

to get them to play in the tournament that carries the great man’s name. How disappointing they are not forming a long line to Versailles for the match held in a non-Ryder Cup year that pits a team representing continental Europe against Britain and Ireland. On the grapevine, Ollie has heard the dire whispers that many do not have the event on their schedules. So it is, that he has written his plea, and what a pity it has come to this. How bad are things? While Olazabal will skipper the continent, Britain and Ireland have not even got a captain yet. Still a month left to go, gentlemen.Still time to put this event on your schedule and prevent the general public from thinking just that little bit less of you. Still time to do the right thing, and live up to your gracious words about the great man last May. Still time to show up.

SPOTLIGHT CYCLING
Cavendish faces London 2012 test British Tour de France star Mark Cavendish will face sprint rival Tyler Farrar at the London 2012 road race test event in Surrey on 14th August. Cavendish won the Tour green jersey last month but American Farrar won a stage and was a consistent threat. The Surrey Cycle Classic covers the 140km Olympic course, with the start and finish on The Mall. Organisers expect Olympic track champion Ed Clancy to be part of a five-man GB team, including Cavendish. The event mixes national teams with British trade line-ups but the top athletes will all be competing for their countries. Cavendish, who learned on Thursday that his HTC-Highroad team will fold at the end of the season, will line up in GB colours alongside several riders from Team Sky, the outfit he is being tipped to join next year. Great Britain will gain an early chance to scout the route where Cavendish is favourite to win the first gold of the Games on 28th July 2012.

Blade runner Oscar Pistorius to compete in able-bodied race Oscar Pistorius will become the first amputee athlete to compete at the able-bodied World Championships, after being named in South Africa's squad. The 24-yearold double-amputee, who competes on carbon fibre legs, will race in the 400m and 4x400m relay. The event begins in Daegu, South Korea on 27th August. “This will be the highestprofile and most prestigious able-bodied event which I have ever competed in, and I will face the highest-calibre of athletes from across the planet” Pistorius went on to add: "I have dreamt for such a long time of competing in a major championships and this is a very proud moment in my life. "It will be a great day for me when I set out on the track in Daegu and I hope to do my country proud.”
