WORLD Romanians' ICKHAM’S

What now?

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

The scenes in london last week were horrible to watch from here on the news but, for the people there it was absolutely terrifying. Being a londoner myself I cannot understand what would make the people of my own city turn on each other as the true cockney way was to look after your neighbours and never, ever to s**t on your own doorstep. Even hardened criminals would never mess where they ate - it was a hard and fast unwritten rule. Of course, the people who carried out the attacks on property and person are a very small minority of the people of london, most are good kids that are getting a bad press because of them. So what has happened? Well, for a start teachers, parents and the local copper haven’t been able to give you a “clip round the ear” when you are out of order for years. The slightest smack to a child will bring childline out in force – they won’t understand that there is a huge difference between disciplining a child when it’s doing wrong and beating a child – so we have now two generations where no-one has been told off for anything. Secondly, schools rarely have competitive sports where there are winners and losers. nobody is allowed to come second as it might hurt their feelings. This is not real life! Thirdly, there is a culture of “I want it, and I want it now!” which seems to be accepted these days with people, young and old maxing out on their credit cards that they then can’t afford the repayments on and, why on earth can you carry a credit card if you haven’t got a job to make the payments? This is how mob rule comes about and it has to be stopped right now or we will see ordinary citizens taking to vigilanteism to sort it out.

access to jobs curbed

The European Commission decided last week to lift its full free movement rules among member states in the case of Spain and allow Madrid to restrict Romanian workers from seeking jobs in the country until December 31st, 2012. EU Employment Commissioner Laszlo Andor said in a statement that the decision was taken because of the very specific employment situation in Spain: He said, "The Commission understands why, at this particular juncture – because of the dramatic employment situation and the very complex financial environment – the Spanish authorities wish to step back from full free movement." The new rules will only affect Romanians

coming to Spain to look for jobs. It will not affect those living in Spain who are registered with and paying into the social security system nor those who just want to visit Spain. Since Romania joined the EU in 2007, Romanians have become the largest minority group in Spain, overtaking Moroccans and Ecuadorians. According to the National Institute of Statistics, the 864,278 Romanians living in Spain make up 15 per cent of all migrants in the country.

Spain had secret contact with Syria Just before Bernardino Leon left his post as Number Two man at the Moncloa Palace, the PM's official residence, Sr Zapatero asked him to undertake a secret mission to Syria to explore the possibility of a peaceful solution to the revolution that broke out there in March. While in Damascus, Sr Leon did not enter any government buildings but met top government officials in their homes. One of the proposals put forward by Sr Leon was that President Bashar al-Assad and his family would be given

asylum in Spain. The Zapatero government has always enjoyed a close relationship with Syria. Former foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos visited Damascus in 2006 despite the fact that Syria was suspected of being behind the assassination of Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri – a visit which greatly annoyed the United States. Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez was the last EU foreign minister to visit Syria just before the revolution broke out in March.

National News 'Seat 351'

Socialist Party candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba wants his election manifesto to include formulas to improve the participation of ordinary citizens in politics. The former PM's election team are working on a proposal called “Seat 351”, which would involve creating an extra seat in Parliament which would be occupied by non-elected

representatives of the people, on occasions still to be worked out. Sr Rubalcaba will have to collect 500,000 signatures backing the proposal before he can put it to Parliament.

Back to the grindstone Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero returned to Madrid from his vacation on Monday, two days earlier than planned, to prepare the special austerity measures he will present to the Cabinet for approval this Friday. Sr Zapatero postponed his departure from Madrid by a day at the beginning of August and on more than one occasion he left his family behind at the Marismillas Palace in Doñana and returned to Madrid to keep a closer eye on a volatile economic situation. He has promised to present a new packet of economic reforms before the country goes to the polling stations on November 20th.

Racist party ousts councillor

Children's deaths shock small town Police have arrested a monitor at the care home for disabled minors where three children were found dead on Monday. Aged three, nine and 14, all three had been asphyxiated with plastic bags. Police said Gabriela L. B., a 55year-old Uruguayan, said she had not wanted them to continue suffering and called the crime a “compassionate homicide”. The woman had

apparently tried to commit suicide by cutting her wrists in a bath tub where she was found unconscious by other employees. But Father Ángel García, the president and founder of Messengers for Peace,

which is responsible for running the centre in Boecillo (pop. 3,500), near Valladolid in Castilla-Lyon, called it an “act of madness that no normal person would be capable of". Father Ángel said the three children – two Spaniards and a Guinean – were the

only residents at the centre, which has the capacity for six in total. Gabriela L. B. had worked at the centre for six years, had a full-time contract and had never caused problems before, a local official said.

War declared on drunken tourists The mayor of Lloret del Mar, Romá Codina, has decided that a strict enforcement of the law is necessary to put an end to incidents like the one last week, when dozens of drunken tourists rioted outside a night club and attacked police, destroying rubbish containers and

everything else in their path. The town attracts a lot of low-cost tourists, especially from France, Holland and Belgium, and such incidents are becoming a regular occurrence. The mayor said the authorities intended to make sure that laws banning the sale of

alcohol to minors, forbidding prostitution in the streets and ordering the early closing of discos and bars were enforced. During the tourist season, more than 6,000 people throng the Avenida Just Marlés, where most of the clubs and bars are

www.thenewsonline.es

located, every night. Club and bar owners have threatened to go on strike if the early closing law is enforced, saying that the problem should be tackled at the root – the tour operators who advertise the town (pop 40,000) as a cheap place to get drunk and where “anything goes”.

The mayor of Boecillo, Pedro Luis Díez Ortega, called an emergency meeting of the municipal council to declare three days of mourning. He said: "You think these things only ever happen abroad, not 50 metres from your home."

Joana Martinez, a councillor belonging to the racist Plataforma per Catalunya (PxC) was forced to resign her seat on the Salt council last week after party officials found out her boyfriend is an African immigrant. Party leader Josep Anglada told her the man was illegally in Spain and asked what she was doing in a party that is against illegal immigrants. He said the fact that her boyfriend was black had nothing to do with it but Martinez said later that he had asked her how she could sleep with a black man. Another councillor, Carlos Bonet, who is gay and has a Dominican boyfriend, also resigned, saying “After seeing what they did to Joana I realised the same thing could happen to me.” PxC won 66,000 votes in the May regional and local elections, obtaining 67 council seats through Catalonia, up from the four it obtained in 2003, a year after the party was founded.

Toddler rescued from rubbish container

Ratón (Mouse) claimed his third victim in the bullring at Xàtiva, Valencia, on Saturday when he threw a 30-year-old-man several yards across the ring before butting and stamping on his victim. The man was taken to hospital where he died of cardio-respiratory arrest. His friends had already dragged the man several times out of the ring because he was very drunk. The 10-year-old bull is much in demand for “encierros” – when the local townspeople can get into the ring and pretend to be toreros (bullfighters). But Ratón is very fast and agile and easily climbs the platforms and “pyramids” scattered around the ring as refuges for the would-be toreros. He first participated in these events in 2002, when he was barely two years old and

EWS

wowed the crowd with his viciousness. Since then he has gored 30 people and killed three, the first in 2006, the second in 2008. Despite having the reputation of being extremely dangerous, small towns and villages have been paying up to €10,000 in the past couple of years to have him in their encierros. The mayor of Xàtiva, Alfonso Rus, told reporters after the tragedy that the town council had been divided about hiring the bull in these hard economic times. His viciousness can perhaps be explained by

what happened to him when he was only 10 days old. Taking advantage of the fact that bull breeder Gregorio de Jesus and his men had gone for lunch and the ranch was deserted, a group of youths took Ratón to a small ring, to “fight” him until he could barely stand. They then locked him in a shed where he would have died if his mother Fusilera had not attracted the attention of the breeder on his return from lunch. The experience could have made a coward of a lesser bull but Ratón’s hatred of men only grew until even his breeder was afraid of him.

After last Saturday’s tragedy, Gregorio de Jesus said he intended to retire Ratón at the end of the season – he still has two “dates” left. De Jesus said Ratón could make at least 40 appearances a year, “but we only go to eight or nine”. Now Ratón will dedicate himself to creating little bulls. In fact, just a year ago, after the first cloned fighting bull was born in Palencia, De Jesus toyed with the idea of cloning Raton to perpetuate his bloody legend. Perhaps the encierro posters will announce the appearance of “Son of Raton” a few years hence. A mighty mouse indeed!

Police arrested a Moroccan couple after their two-year-old daughter was found by local residents sobbing in a rubbish container in this Murcian town late on Saturday night and charged them with abandoning her there. However, the next morning, a Guardia spokesman said the child had been put in the bin by another girl she had been playing with. He said they did not know how long she had been there. She was reunited with her parents on Sunday after they were freed. Madrid

He said the work must continue even as he tries to keep an eye on economic developments that are complicating the country’s current crisis. ceuta

All sides guilty of crime

An Australian man has been arrested in the US in connection with an attack on a teenager who had a fake bomb strapped to her neck, the FBI said on Monday. The suspect, 50-year-old Paul "Doug" Peters, had been apprehended on Monday at his ex-wife's house near La Grange, north-east of Louisville, in an operation involving Australian police and the FBI. Australia will ask the US to extradite him – the extradition process is expected to take about two months. Madeleine Pulver, 18, was alone at home when an intruder broke in

and chained a device that looked like a bomb to her. A note attached to the collar bomb threatened to detonate the device, but made no financial demand. It took 10 hours to remove the device. Australian state police said they had contacted the FBI after an investigation led them to identify an individual who left the

country on August 8th on a flight to the US. Luke Moore, from the New South Wales Police, told a news conference at the FBI offices in Louisville: “There was a range of pieces of evidence that led us to identify this suspect." Police in Australia had previously promised to "tie down every lead" in what they said appeared to have been an extortion attempt.

human rights Watch has said all sides in Somalia's conflict are guilty of serious violations of international law. The hrW report, you Don't Know Who to Blame, said civilians are bearing the brunt not just of a famine but also a failure by any side to protect them. The islamist group al-Shabab is guilty of unrelenting brutality, while government troops carry out arbitrary arrests and detentions. hrW also criticises the West for not exerting pressure to stop the abuses. china

Mid-air rescue for cable car passengers

Police in India have detained prominent activist Anna Hazare (pictured) and hundreds of his supporters just hours before he had planned to start a fast against a proposed new anti-corruption law. Mr Hazare had pledged to begin an indefinite hunger strike in the capital, Delhi, on Tuesday despite the police denying him permission to fast for more than three days. He has called the proposed legislation a "cruel joke", and described the fight against corruption as the "second war of Independence". He said the

movement will not "stop with my arrest". He said millions have joined the movement against corruption and many will court arrest. By press time on Tuesday, reports coming out of India said more than 1,300 people had been detained. He warned: “There will come a

time when there will be no space in India's jails." Mr Hazare and his supporters have been pushing for a strong ombudsman with powers to investigate the corruption charges against the prime minister, senior judges and MPs, among others. But in the

Lokpal (Citizen's Ombudsman) bill, the government has refused to include the prime minister and senior members of the judiciary in the ombudsman's remit. Critics have said that recent scandals point to a pervasive culture of corruption in Mr Singh's administration.

helicopters plucked to safety 20 people stranded in mid-air on a cable car in southern Germany after a paraglider collided with the cables. The 19 passengers and conductor were brought to safety on Saturday morning after spending 18 hours suspended 80m above the ground at Mt Tegelberg in Bavaria. rescuers supplied food and blankets, and toys for six children aboard, while waiting for strong winds to die down. They also freed the paraglider, who may face charges, and his tandem passenger.

Gay present for Fidel

FACTORY CLEARANCE! 2 single mattresses with base and legs

€295 per pair

A Cuban man and transgender woman have married in the country's first "gay wedding". Dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez, who acted as a godmother at the ceremony, said that while the marriage was not technically a gay wedding "it is the closest we have come". She wrote on Twitter: "We are very happy with what happened today, it was a big step in a small Cuba". Same sex marriage is illegal in Cuba, but bride Wendy Iriepa (pictured) is legally a woman after

undergoing one of the first state-sponsored sex changes in 2007. Her fiancé, Ignacio Estrada, who is a gay rights activist, said the wedding, timed to coincide with Fidel Castro's birthday on August 13th, was a "gift" for the former leader. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people faced official discrimination for years in communist Cuba and in the early days of the revolution

many were sent to reeducation camps. Homosexuality was made legal in 1970, and President Raul Castro has introduced a series of gay rights reforms since taking over from his brother Fidel in 2006. Last year Fidel Castro himself apologised for the persecution of homosexuals under his rule, calling it a "great injustice".

The nationwide campaign doesn't pull any punches. "Think what you could do with €100 billion," runs one ad. "Build 600 new hospitals or a million new homes – or triple spending on security." That, it warns, is what tax evasion

costs honest Italians. Italy has an unenviable reputation for tax evasion. Last year it cost the state the equivalent of nearly €99.3 billion. Experts have calculated that up to a quarter of the economy goes untaxed, much of it ending up in foreign tax havens. The campaign’s underlying message is summed up by another slogan describing tax dodgers as "parasites on society". The aim of the campaign is to shame tax evaders into declaring their

real income, boosting the government's coffers and helping to stave off financial ruin. The campaign was launched just before Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti spelled out his plans to balance the country's books by 2013. But Mr Tremonti has been embarrassed by allegations that he used cash to pay the rent on a flat in Rome – a classic ruse of tax dodgers the world over.

UK News London and UK Riots: What happens now? The consequences of the riots that swept London and other parts of the UK last week have been far reaching, with politicians fighting about what should be done and, of course, always claiming that the other side has got it all wrong. On Monday, both Tessa Jowell and Ed Milliband were seen telling David Cameron and the coalition via Sky News that they were handling the social structure of the UK badly with – naturally – no mention that their party had been in power prior to the present government for some 13 years until May 10th 2010 when Gordon Brown had to step down due to a lack of votes in his favour and he couldn’t form a coalition. However, local politicians for the areas that were most affected by the burning, looting and violence seem to be faring rather better in front of the cameras as well as behind the scenes. MP for Tottenham, David Lammy, has been described by residents as “absolutely brilliant”. He has been on the streets with the people helping to clear up the mess, talk them through their problems and generally helping out wherever he can. He said “Please can everyone remember that 99% of the people of Tottenham were not rioting. Don’t stigmatise these people when they are applying for jobs and trying to move forward from this.” One African born woman said that she was shocked by

the behaviour before and after the looting. She said: I am from Africa and people there don’t do this sort of thing because they know what African prisons are like and they are very afraid of being put in them.” However, one looter who had his hoody up and two scarves covering his face said: “I’ve had trainers and track suits. I can get whatever I’ve always wanted and there’s nuffink [sic.] the police can do about it.” There is an emergency centre in Tottenham for people who have found themselves homeless and the local leisure centre has piles of clothes donated for those who have lost everything in the fires. Some mothers have been shopping their children to the police. The mother of the Olympic athlete caught on CCTV who had said “I had the best night of my life”, urged other mothers: “Shop your children. It hurts but it’s right.” Stuart Radose who was quoted in The News last week after having lost all his possessions when the whole of the building he and many other families lived in was razed to the ground said this week: “I didn’t see any police on the streets at the time. We had to flee for our lives and are now living at my father’s place that is ten minutes along the road. My wife and I are sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room. We have lost everything and will never go back to Tottenham.” He added that he couldn’t understand why there were no police about

as there had been hundreds extra at the Tottenham football match that had finished just a few hours previously at 7.30pm. They seemed not to respond to the small skirmishes and it just ballooned from there. In the meantime, a 16year-old boy has been arrested and charged with the murder of 68-year-old Ealing man Richard Mannington Bowes as he tried to defend property. The boy has also been charged with four counts of burglary and a charge of aggravated assault. CCTV footage has been released showing two policemen being mown down by a car going at speed trying to get away with loot. The car, a green Citröen C5 with registration number Y132 GHJ did not stop, leaving the officers badly injured in the road. At the moment the police are saying that they need far more specially trained riot officers and the planned cuts in spending will mean 2,000 less officers. However, the government maintain that the cuts in jobs within the force will mainly come from administration. Nick Clegg said that sentences should be made hard enough for them to stick and that those who have carried out the attacks to people and property “should be made to look their victims in the face”, adding that “the rule book on sentencing should be torn up and thrown away, council houses and benefits should be withdrawn from those found guilty”. Meanwhile David Cameron was saying that the riots were not about race, government policy or budget cuts – but quite simply about vandalism and looting. One comment made was that if you take away housing and benefits, people will either have to be put in private accomodation that will cost the country even more or they will steal more to get what they want. The country needs to get back to the idea that if you want something, you work and earn the money to pay for it. Benefits should only be a minimum pay-out and for a short period.

Man Charged 20-year-old reece donovan has been charged with robbery after he was caught on CCTV apparently helping Malaysian student Syraf gaziq rosli during the London riots last week after he had been attacked by the mob. donovan was seen talking to the student, who had his face that was covered in blood in his hands, while he helped himself to the contents of the rucksack on the student’s back. uK

Advice sought from America david Cameron has been seeking the advice of veteran police expert Bill Bratton over how to handle civil disturbances in the future. Cameron openly criticised the handling of last week’s riots by police while he was on holiday. Bill Bratton is well known in the States for his work in New York and Los Angeles, greatly reducing gang warfare in the cities. However, the uK police forces are upset about the PM bringing him in, saying that “We have perfectly good experts of our own right here in the uK.” IreLANd

Fastnet tragedy averted Twenty-one sailors were pulled to safety when their craft, the Maxi rambler 100, capsized in the Irish Sea, five miles out from fastnet rock during the rolex fastnet race on Sunday. The boat and crew from the united States of America were in the lead of the monohull race when they were vying for line honours. Project manager Mick Harvey, a native Australian who now lives on rhode Island, New York, recalled the moment when he heard the “sickening “ sound of the keel breaking away. He said there was no time and the huge boat “turned turtle just like a dinghy” instantly. Navigator Peter Isler sent out a Mayday. The coastguard diverted a local fishing boat, Wave Chieftain to assist, which winched the crew on board. earlier a helicopter had been scrambled from Shannon Airport. Wendy Touton was airlifted for medical attention due to the effects of hypothermia and the four remaining crew were taken to Baltimore Harbour where they were re-united with the 16 crew rescued by the Baltimore Lifeboat. All are now OK. SOuTH Of eNgLANd

Businesses targeted Hackers in the Bournemouth area have been getting into companies’ phone systems and using them to call all over the world at the companies’ expense. One firm had a bill for over €12,000 for just one quarter and said that, although they could cover it, they were worried about start-up companies that simply would not have the money to pay the bills and would go under because of it. An Oxfordshire software company has said that they have programmes to counteract this happening but, at the end of the day, if you get hacked you are the phone company contract holder and you are liable to pay the bills. Exercise more New studies published in medical journal The Lancet have said that exercising for just 15 minutes each day could add another three years to your life. It suggests walking, swimming and stretching exercises can help. A team of researchers from Taiwan who took readings from 1996 and 2008 of a study group of over 400,000 people that were approximately half men and half women found that even those with known cardiovascular disease could benefit. In the meantime a study group from Australia found that those who sit in front of the TV or play computer games all the time are likely to have reduced lifespans. Those who spend an average of six hours a day watching TV can expect their lives to be 4.8 years shorter. They also found that every hour of TV viewing after the age of 25, took 22 minutes off a person's life expectancy.

Travelling on a train to work everyday can be stressful enough but, in recent years it has also started to cost a small fortune. A yearly season ticket from Newbury in Berkshire into Waterloo now costs over £6,000 and is set to rise by another £500 in January. Commuters complain that, even though they are paying these sums the trains are sometimes filthy and seats are at a premium with many commuters having to stand up for the whole of their journey. Yesterday, Tuesday a fullscale protest was held at Waterloo against the rises, the state of the trains when they do arrive and constant lateness. The Fair Fares Now

Talking of trains... Another protest within the rail industry has sprung up because a contract worth £1.4 billion pounds to build new trains for the Thameslink network between Bedford and Brighton has gone to Germany company Siemens, as reported here in The News a number of weeks ago. The company that builds trains for the networks at the moment is Derby based Bombadier where it is feared more than 1400 jobs could be lost. Workers from the plant, joined by football players from local side Derby County, are increasing pressure on the Government to cancel the German contract and keep British trains British. The unions have called it "industrial vandalism" and have promised a relentless campaign. The footballers wore shirts emblazoned with the slogan 'Save Our Rail Industry - Derby United'.

campaigners say that for the last few years, the formula for fares increases has generally been RPI plus 1% but it will remain at 3% for the next three years to finance planned upgrades to the rail network. Shadow Transport Secretary, Maria Eagle, told protesters at Waterloo that inflation-busting rail increases will hurt the UK economy. The campaign is backed by the RMT transport union, which said in a commissioned report that rail privatisation had "bled £6.6bn out of the rail industry since 1997" and that future bleed would cost £6.7bn over the next 10 years.

Not so Eco Food giant Tesco has withdrawn from sale the so called “Eco Bags” they have been selling to customers to persuade them not to use plastic bags which are so very environmentally unfriendly. However the green bio friendly bags have been found to be even worse than the plastic bags much to Tesco’s embarrasment. It is pulling them from stores after five years following independent scientific research funded by the

government which suggests they may damage wildlife and the environment. Tesco said it began changing to new bags, which are not biodegradable but include 15 per cent recycled material, earlier this year. However, the company has made no official announcement on the change, and its website still boasts about the company’s commitment to using biodegradable bags.

Local News Sand dune cuts off 500 people Some 500 residents and holidaymakers were cut off for a time last week in the Punta Paloma district of Tarifa after high winds drove part of the huge Valdevaqueros sand dune across the access roads, burying several cars in the process. Local residents have been demanding the construction of a containing wall for several years but because the dune is in a protected area only

the Environment Ministry in Madrid can do anything about it and it has taken no action so far. Every time there is a high

wind, the dune crosses the road, isolating the people of Punta Paloma, often for days on end, depending on how many tons of sand are driven inland.

Park for dogs in Fuengirola Mayor Esperanza Oña has announced plans to build the biggest park in Andalucia for the exclusive use of dogs and their owners. The 5,500 m2 park will be built in Los Pacos and will have paths, two “toilet” areas for the dogs, an area where they can be let loose and a recreational area with long jumps and high jumps and a slalom, among other things. Fresh water for both humans and dogs will be available. Owners will have to pick up their dogs' messes and dangerous breeds will have to be kept muzzled and on a leash. The park

will have a high wire fence and the entrance gate will only open to admit users. Sra Oña said there were also plans to organise different competitions. The council estimates that it will cost €42,000 to create the park.

Guardia 'fined' for not fining The Unified Association of the Guardia Civil (AUGC) has threatened to take Cordoba's traffic chief to court if he continues withholding bonuses and salary supplements amounting to as much as €200 a month from agents who do not issue enough fines. An AUGC spokesman said the Guardia were awarded five points for fining drunk drivers and four or three points for fines for using mobiles, or not

using seat belts, among others. Three Guardia have already lost their salary extras because the traffic chief considered they had not issued an acceptable number of fines. The spokesman said it was “intolerable” that the agents were evaluated in this way because it was “fomenting a competition and voracity for fines that could only have negative consequences for drivers”.

Estate agency to return sale money The Supreme Court has upheld a ruling by Malaga's Provincial Court ordering an estate agent to terminate the contract of sale of a home because it did not have the views of a golf course, mountains and sea, as claimed in the sale brochure. Erasure, SL, will now have to return €205,368 plus interest which a couple paid for the apartment in October 2003. The company had argued that the views of the golf course, mountains and sea applied to the residential complex as a whole and not to every individual household. The judge argued that the brochure was not just an instrument of promotion but “an authentic advertising offer”. The couple had apparently not seen the apartment before they signed the contract, basing their decision to buy on the brochure and other plans shown to them.

'Express evictions' held up The Malaga branch of the M-15 protest movement has been concentrating on trying to stop the authorities from evicting people who can't pay their mortgages – and, ironically, are getting a lot of help from those very same authorities. Despite the introduction of the so-called “express eviction” law 18 months ago, the courts simply do not have the staff to cope with them. The eviction communications service has a staff of 33 which used to inform 26 courts of pending evictions a few years ago. Now it has to inform more than 80. As a result, it takes at least six months, not six weeks, to process each eviction.

Council promotes wine marketing project Before the building boom, Manilva was an important wine producing area but many vineyards were sold to promoters and those that were left fell into the hands of the big producers in the Axarquia as the work force was reduced by retirement or death. Argimiro Martinez, a teacher at the town’s grape cultivation school/ workshop, said: “They come from the Axarquia, take our grapes and sell them at a big profit in the US.” His school hopes to put an end to that. Situated on two hectares provided by Manilva town council, the students cultivate and harvest their own grapes on what they describe as being “the southern-most vineyard in Europe”. Before the construction boom, Manilva had 1,500 hectares under cultivation of which only 300 remain and only 180 are worked. The 18 students do all the work themselves without any outside help and do not use herbicides – they want

the wine they produce to be able to carry an “ecological” label. They work from 7 am until 2 pm under the August sun and are paid a small wage during the two years the course lasts. One student, Daniel Quiñones, said he used to work as a waiter but had been on the dole for some time before accepting a place in the project, adding that he was enjoying it much more than he thought he would. Manilva councillor José Carlos Castaños, who coordinates local development, said the objective is to produce one sweet wine and one white wine. He said Manilva had always produced fresh grapes and raisins and

wine had taken a second place, being for local consumption only. Manilva is the only town in Malaga province which offers a higher professional training course in grape production through its Development Foundation (FUNMADES). In spite of the fact that the school/workshop project is still far from being profitable, FUNMADES plans to hold the 1st Grape Harvesting Week, starting on August 27th. There will be a wine-tasting workshop, a grape-related exhibition and an interactive walk through the grape-growing areas, all aimed at getting the support of tourists for the recovery of the vineyards.

Bracelets for straying kids until September 15th, parents can keep track of their children on the town’s beaches by applying for a free ID bracelet with their name and telephone numbers on from the lifesaving modules.

Gigolos fall for scam

Councillor Isabel moreno said the objective was to protect the children and guarantee recovery if they get lost. She said it was an important step in increasing the services already provided and described it as an innovative initiative on the Costa del Sol.

The National Police have smashed a ring working out of Fuengirola which offered work to gigolos for a fee ranging from €200 to €1,000.

The malaga branch of the Spanish Red Cross has warned that “false volunteers” are collecting money in its name, to be sent to starving people in Somalia, in different parts of the province but especially in mijas and Torremolinos. a spokesman said their volunteers only use collecting tins on the street once a year on the “Dia de la Banderita” (small flag day). He said donations are usually solicited by phone, text messages, its web page or through its bank accounts.

The police said about 80 men had fallen for the scam, paying a total of €53,000 to the six-member gang. It consisted of a married couple who organised the scam and the wife’s brother, a computer expert who directed the applicants to pertinent websites after they paid the fee. The three others got a 5 per cent commission for opening bank accounts.

Reinventing the toilet Flush toilets are called conveniences because they swirl human waste down the drain quickly and neatly. But the rising cost of all that follows the flush – which is often paid by municipal water and sewage treatment systems – has led some groups to rethink the technology, particularly for regions that lack such systems or for places where waste water treatment plants, many of them ageing, are overburdened by the demands of fastgrowing populations. Enter the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and its “Reinvent the Toilet” competition. Researchers at eight universities have been awarded $3 million to use recent technology to create models that needn’t be connected to sewers, or to water and electricity lines, and that cost less than pennies per person a day to use. There is more financing in the pipeline

for one or more winning prototypes to be tested and produced commercially. Foundation executive Frank Rijsberman said: “The present toilet is a 19th-century device that does not meet the needs of a vast part of the world’s population. He pointed out that about 2.6 billion people around the world do not have access to sewer-linked systems and must use simple latrines, holes in the ground or just the nearest available spot. This can lead to many health problems, like acute childhood diarrhoea, which claims thousands of victims every year.

Each unit can be used up to 500 times a day and while the prototype might cost $5,000, the final operational costs will be only a few cents a day. Katherine Foxon, a chemical engineer and senior lecturer at the University of KwaZuluNatal in Durban, South Africa, is on a team that is using chemical engineering to design a new waterless composting toilet. The current version composts waste for six months but the new version would heat the solid waste quickly and use the energy to speed up the

Even in countries with extensive sewer systems, researchers are testing toilets that still flush but will divert urine before it gets into the sewer. Dealing with urine separately, by siphoning it off to local storage tanks, simplifies waste water management. The urine can then be

Not so silly season update

A

ll the national newspapers and many foreign ones were captivated by the idea of the Duchess of Alba giving up her huge fortune for love. But not one of them bothered to find out where she got all those non-Spanish surnames from. I know I said last week I didn't care enough to delve into the history of the title but curiosity finally overcame me. The 13th Duchess of Alba – María del Pilar Teresa Cayetana de Silva y Álvarez de Toledo y Silva-Bazán – was born in Seville on June 10th 1762, and died childless in Madrid on July 23rd, 1802. The title then went to Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stewart, a grand-nephew of the 12th Duke of Alba, who belonged to the House of Berwick, an illegitimate branch of the Scottish Stuarts, which held the titles Duke of Berwick in England and Duke of Liria and Jérica in Spain. Please don't ask me where the last two titles sprang from because I don't know! I had a brief look at that family tree, only to find myself wandering all over France as well as Scotland, England and Spain. These aristocrats do get around.

T

he duchess has still not announced a date for her wedding to Alfonso Diez, keeping the so-called “pink press” in suspense. The word is that it will be some time in September.

Brothers, whose collapse triggered a global panic, an A rating right up to the months of its demise. When the firm went bankrupt, S&P issued a report denying that it had done anything wrong. Krugman has no faith in the rating agencies and it's heartening to see that many EU countries are finally turning on them. Take the sting out of their tail, I say, and let's hope that – like the scorpion and the bee – they will expire.

E

ven better news was that Spain, France, Italy and Belgium had banned short-selling – when speculators borrow shares and sell them with the expectation that the price will fall thus contributing to market volatility. Stocks rose in all four countries when the ban was announced and apparently the European Commission is considering making the ban permanent among its members – amid howls of “not fair” from the speculators.

I

t's nice to know that New York Times columnist Roger Cohen is just as bewildered as the rest of us by the youth protests that are spreading like wildfire. And like wildfire, they're unpredictable. Cohen, who is based in Paris, remembers a time when August “was once a time for dreaming, wandering the empty streets of this city, reading silly-season newspaper stories after a leisurely lunch washed down with Sancerre, gazing at squares where fountains plashed and the pregnant or the old chatted on benches at dusk.” How evocative.

T

he not-so-silly news this week is about the Standard & Poor's rating agency which has downgraded Spain several times in the past and caused an uproar recently when it dared to down grade the US government debt. American economist Paul Krugman – a Nobel laureate who also has a Principe de Asturias award, among many others – had a real go at S&P's credibility in the New York Times the other week. He said the best word to to describe the rating agency's decision to downgrade America is chutzpah – “traditionally defined by the example of the young man who kills his parents, then pleads for mercy because he's an orphan”.

K

rugman says America's large budget deficit is primarily the result of the economic slump that followed the 2008 crisis. “And S&P, along with its sister rating agencies, played a major role in causing that crisis, by giving AAA ratings to mortgage-backed assets that have since turned into toxic waste.” S&P, Krugman notes, “ also gave Lehman

Provocation

Martin Garitano

B

ildu is once again showing its true colours, as the Partido Popular (PP) puts it. Or is it? Some members of the coalition of Basque radical “abertzale” left are trying to provoke and shock many into thinking that they support ETA, but it goes beyond that. Take Martin Garitano, for instance. The Gizpuzkoa provincial administrator – the highest Bildu official holding an elected office – turned a lot heads when earlier this month he began cozying up to the families of ETA prisoners who have had a long-standing battle with the central government over relocating their loved ones to jails in the Basque Country. Garitano, a former managing editor at the pro-independence newspaper Gara, accompanied the families to the opening ceremonies of the traditional town festival in Vitoria. The provocation was such that the government of regional premier Patxi López asked all the organisers of town festivals throughout the Basque Country not to allow their annual parties to turn into tributes to ETA.

T B

ut then something happened. The world speeded up, the me-firsts took over, money was the only thing worth having but the poor stayed or got poorer and the rich got richer and the rage grew. I think that's what we're witnessing now – a lot of very frustrated, and decent people in countries across the world – not just here and the UK – who basically want their societies to get back on a more even keel. Criminal elements are always quick to take advantage of such moments, no matter how many water canons and rubber bullets you use, because they don't care. It's all good fun to them and it's the rest of us who are left feeling heartsick.

he Bildu coalition is a unique phenomenon. After winning a legal battle to get its listings on the May 22nd ballot, it has become the third largest political force in the Basque Country, capturing dozens of town halls, including San Sebastián, as well as the provincial governorship of Gizpuzkoa. Many of its members walk the fine line between renouncing violence and calling for the dissolution of ETA. On paper, Bildu states in its party statutes that it wants to seek solutions for Basque independence through peaceful means. But many, such as Garitano, have not come out openly in calling for ETA’s demise. He has not been so subtle in letting people believe that he supports the Basque terrorist group. During his swearing-in ceremony last June, Garitano showed up with a lapel pin on his suit that displayed the prisoner number of Arnaldo Otegi, the radical spokesman for the outlawed Batasuna party who has been accused of taking part in several ETA actions. But does Garitano really

support ETA or is it all a show?

S

ome Bildu members did the complete opposite to what Garitano did and attended a rally held by the families of ETA victims. In an attempt to show that they do not care to uphold the violent struggle, the coalition lawmakers have made changes in their lives and are no longer trying to prove that ETA and independence belong in the same boat.

E

arlier last week, the PP accused Socialist candidate Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba of secretly wanting ETA to continue to exist – albeit mortally wounded but still surviving – for political purposes. With ETA gone, the Madrid government will have to wake up to reality and prepare to be open to negotiations with the abertzale radicals for a peaceful solution for Basque independence. This is something that no Spanish government is prepared to face at this time.

string of jailhouse conversations between ETA prisoners monitored by law enforcement authorities show that the inmates are anxiously awaiting the announcement by their companions on the outside that they are willing to give up the armed struggle and take part in a verifiable ceasefire. “The decision has been made. So why haven’t they announced it?” asked one ETA prisoner in a conversation picked up by law enforcement and published by El País on August 7th. The jailhouse chats show that ETA has been severely weakened. It will be a short time before we hear that the Basque terrorist group no longer wants to continue the armed struggle.

B

ildu knows that ETA is on its way out. The Basque radicals have finally determined that violence hasn’t worked so it is now time to look at political strategies. But until the time comes, coalition members must try to contain themselves and stop provoking those who have been hurt by ETA.

Hay When you want to talk or ask about the existence of something there is a very useful little word - Hay (pronounced I as in I am) meaning there is or there are, is there? or are there? ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de aquí? Is there a supermarket near here? Hay un supermercado pequeño al final de la calle. There's a small supermarket at the end of the street. ¿Hay un café cerca? Is there a cafe nearby? Hay un café bueno y barato en la esquina. There's a good, cheap cafe on the corner.

The president of Lions International, the world’s largest service club organisation with 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members, recently honoured the Mijas La Cala Lions club by awarding its prestigious Letter of Commendation to the club’s Diabetic Support Group in recognition of their outstanding achievements amongst the diabetic community on the Costa del Sol.

The disease is recognised by Lions International as being one of the world’s most serious health challenges and it was to help address the problem locally that co-founders Frank and Anne Bowles established the DSG in 2003 since when the demand for its services continues to increase. For further information call Frank and Anne on 952 464 184 or email annediabetics@gmail.com

The ladies from the Cudeca shop in Alhaurin, namely Janette Smith and Pat Collins, together with the help of Ace fm organised a great Motown and Soul night recently with local businesses donating fabulous prizes. After enjoying a very tasty meal, everyone danced to the Four Tops, Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes and a host of others. Over 160 people attended raising €1210 for Cudeca funds.

Hay muchos niños en la playa - There are lots of children on the beach. ¿Hay muchos niños en el parque? - Are there many children in the park? Hay varios museos en Málaga - There are several museums in Malaga. To say there isn't or there aren't, simply use No hay. No hay un hotel en este pueblo - There isn't a hotel in this town. No hay nadie en la calle - There isn't anybody in the street. And a couple of little proverbs using No hay No hay mal que dure cien años - Nothing bad lasts for ever. (Literally there isn't a bad thing that lasts for a hundred years). No hay nada nuevo bajo el sol - There is nothing new under the sun. Hasta la próxima Until next time . Valerie. Cavaliers come to Fuengirola I know it’s hot.... Around 1962 the famous London store Harrods, commenced all day Saturday trading. This meant that many workers in the store were denied the chance to play their favourite sport – football! A member of staff, Mr Chris Cordon contacted the members’ club to see if a pitch could be obtained on a Sunday, and the Harrodian Cavaliers were formed by Chris inviting work colleagues to play. It was agreed that the team’s colours were to be the same as the Harrodian Club and the store – green and yellow. The facilities at the Harrodian Club were excellent and fixtures were held there against other stores in the same position such as Dickens and Jones, John Lewis etc. The fixtures list

continued to develop with teams from local hospitals, including a team called “Coffin Casuals” made up from crew and actors from the BBC. This situation continued until 1973 when their first away fixture was organised between Corby Strip Mills and the Cavaliers. This fixture was reciprocated and away fixtures were implemented into the fixtures list with away games at Stoke and Mannering Round Table at Stoke University and then Ashbourne, Derbyshire where the local team was run by ex-Cavalier Adrian Fletcher. Two of their regular fixtures included one against the Tottenham Hotspur Directors XI played at Tottenhams’ White Hart Lane grounds, and Reading Directors XI played at Elm Park with Cavaliers hosting return fixtures at Craven Cottage, the home of

Fulham FC. Here many famous players came out to represent the Cavaliers including the late great Bobby Moor, Martin Peters, Mike Summerbee and Rodney Marsh – to name but a few. In 1974 the first Cavaliers’ Tour was born, going to Paris at Easter that year. This tradition has carried on ever since but has moved to the May Bank Holiday. In the mid 80s, the Cavaliers moved into “Vets” football. There have been many trips to France since talking in such places as Le Touquet, St Malo, Dinard and Arras to name but a few and have also been to Malta, Majorca, Portugal and, this year, they came to Fuengirola.

S K Estates MURCIA

Over the past two weeks, The News has been running articles about the region of Murcia and the fact that the new Paramount Studios has just announced they are to build their new theme park in the area to rival Disneyland Paris that will be within a 20 minute drive of the houses for sale here. The city of Murcia holds many interesting features as does Cartagena that is around 30 minutes drive away. This is a golden opportunity for someone to live in one house and let the other as a business income to people visiting the new theme park.

House 1 3 bedroomed house in Mula, Murcia right at the top of the town with fantastic views. Living room, dining room, big kitchen, bathroom and three bedrooms plus courtyard for barbecues and roof terrace. New electrics.

House 2 The larger of the two houses with 3/4 bedrooms, 3/4 reception rooms, kitchen and bathroom. This house also has a courtyard, a cave to fit out for keeping wines at the correct temperature and a very large roof terrace, partly covered for bar-b-q’s and sunbathing. This house requires total refurbishment but would be a large family house when finished. Both houses are on NO TRAFFIC roads so are very safe for a family with children. THE PRICE FOR BOTH HOUSES IS €125,000 FOR A QUICK SALE

661 114 070 or 667 340 928

The overseas tours have been going on for some 36 years and, as age has caught up with the members, the touring format has changed from playing three games of football against local sides down to none – they now play golf instead for the week-long tours! Four of the original members still meet to play tennis and to get together with two other original members making six in total. Their friendship has lasted 48 years. In 2009 the next generation of Cavaliers (pictured above) were formed, all under 20-yearsold and it is hoped that they will follow in the footsteps of the senior side.

...but this is ridiculous! This picture of a local ladies fashion shop was taken in Coin last week and, as you can see, the latest fashion appears to be no clothes at all. But don’t worry, if you’re not that much of an exhibitionist, there are

plenty of designer shops, a big Dunnes store that sells all manner of cool clothes, and even a couple of charity shops with bargains in if you’ve been hit by the crisis. So no excuses for wandering around the town in the altogether as seems to be what is on offer in this shop!

Race Night Don’t forget that this Friday 19th sees the JK’s and Siboney race night at the Hipodromo in La Cala. The coach goes from Siboneys in Coin’s La Trocha and the cost includes roast pork with

crackling plus summer trimmings before you go, the coach and all entrance fees for the racecourse There are still a few tickets left at €16.50 so call Duncan on 654 396 651for timings and more info.

MP’s visit to the Costa a success The Rt Hon Malcolm Bruce MP was the esteemed guest and speaker at a lunch given by the Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina recently. Amongst the Rotarian members and their invited guests were D. Federico Vallés representing Dna. Angeles Muñoz, Mayor of Marbella, and Sr. Joachim

Langhans, President Rotary Marbella.

of

As past chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on International Development, Mr. Bruce gave a most illuminating and interesting speech on how the British Government sees its role in helping developing

countries and the financial contributions that they can offer in these troubled economic times. The Rt Hon Malcolm Bruce is currently on holiday on the Costa del Sol with his young family, and is greatly enjoying Marbella and local areas of interest.

Fun & Fundraising on the coast Coin-based animal charity CHAIN headed to the coast last week for a fun night of fundraising at Club La Costa, a resort which works very closely with the charity. Entertainer Jason Oliver (pictured right) presented prizes to a lucky group of holidaymakers. He was performing at Zacary's bar at the Fuengirola resort while CHAIN held their charity raffle, handed out scratch cards, and

auctioned a €50 voucher donated by Club La Costa, to use at one of the resort's restaurants. CHAIN's fundraising coordinator Denise Whitehair said:" We want to say a big thank-you to Club La Costa whose Team Marina staff were wonderful on the night, and to all the holidaymakers who entered into the spirit of the evening, by helping to raise much needed funds for our work.

“A big thank you too goes to Jason, who kindly donated his CDs and DVDs to the list of prizes and was a wonderful compère for the evening."

Gibraltar

News Return to Convent Gibraltar mourns One of Gibraltar’s most famous citizens died last Thursday following a short illness. Guy Stagnetto, QC was 81-years-old and had had an active life that he enjoyed enormously. Credited as having a brilliant legal mind, he was passionate about Gibraltar being in charge of its own affairs and would happily argue a legal point with anyone, surrounded by what seemed like tons of paperwork in his offices in Main Street, then at Town Range.

Two Spanish women who were part of a family group of refugees that fled to Gibraltar during the Civil War and were accommodated in the Convent ballroom visited the Convent with a group of their relatives. The Governor and Lady Johns received them and talked to them about their time at the Convent. HE The Governor said: “It’s been wonderful to welcome these two visitors back to the Convent, three quarters of a century since their stay here, and terrific that they have brought their families. This was a piece of living Convent history of which we really didn’t know very much, so we are grateful to them for sharing their memories with us.” Berta Castilla Garcia, now 93-years-old, hasn’t been back to the Convent for some 75 years saying that having to leave her home in Spain with

another twenty-one members of the family just after the beginning of the Spanish Civil War was very hard. Berta and her family were in fear of their lives and fled to Gibraltar where they were taken in by the then Governor of Gibraltar Sir Charles Harington Harington who knew her father Juan Castillo Delgado who ran a finca used by the Calpe Hunt. Juan was already on the Rock when four male members of the family were shot in the Campo de Gibraltar at the start of the uprising and the other members of the family joined him shortly afterwards. Staying at the Bristol Hotel to start with, Sir Charles then moved them into the Convent ballroom which was divided by sheets into five separate family units where they stayed from July 1936 to February 1937.

She was accompanied by Sara Castillo del Pino, 95, who had also been a guest of the Convent at that time. The visit came about after Berta’s daughter Victoria Ruiz Castillo, who now lives in San Roque, had been to the Convent for a concert. After hearing the stories about her family’s history at that time, she said that being in the actual ballroom where it all took place was a “powerful moment”. She was chatting with the present Governor, Sir Adrian Johns who, after hearing her story, invited her and her family for a visit. The two ladies came to Gibraltar with four generations of their family that had travelled from far flung places of the globe to be there. Berta’s daughter said that the family were very happy to have the chance to visit the Convent after so many years and were very grateful to the Governor for arranging such a lovely day for them.

Called to the Bar in 1952 at Middle Temple, he was one of the senior partners of the firm Triay Stagnetto Neish that was created in 2001 but also carried on with his own practice of Stagnetto and Co. He attained the prestigious rank of Queens Counsel in 1985. The Chairman of the Bar Council, David Dumas QC said of his friend and colleague: “"Guy was widely and properly recognised as being one of Gibraltar's most able and persuasive advocates and for possessing a very fine analytical mind together with a voracious appetite for research, not just within the bounds of his professional practice. The most recent public proof of that is the paper he delivered to the last formal meeting of the Friends of Gibraltar tracing, in detailed fashion, the origins of the Spanish claim over Gibraltar, and a robust and substantiated analysis of the legal arguments surrounding the Treaty of Utrecht" .

Your guide to Malaga Feria The first ever Feria held in Málaga was round about 1497, to celebrate the re-conquering of the city. Basically, the Catholics managed to throw out the Moslems and this was seen as a huge triumph.

T

herefore, every year this event is celebrated in the form of the Málaga feria and is one of the most important weeks of the year for the Malagueños.

I

f you have the gear, the dress code is pure flamenco with señoritas wandering around in their beautiful flouncy dresses while the men are dressed proudly in their cabellero gear complete with hats and horse whips! You will find people dancing the many versions of the “Sevillana” in the streets with great cheers, clapping, many “Olés” and laughter everywhere. So, that’s what to expect!

T

here are many ferias throughout the region, but the one held in Málaga is by far the biggest and the

best and attracts around six million visitors, many from abroad.

T

his year the feria is running from now until this Saturday, 20th August.

D

uring the day and into the evenings you can visit the casetas (marquees) and admire the horsemen and women (jinetes) in Andalucian dress, riding or driving carriages with horses splendidly adorned in traditional tack. All the horses have to be off the feria ground by 8pm due to animal welfare, so best to see them during the afternoon.

W

hilst at the casetas you will be able to buy many different types of food including a huge range of tapas, bocadillos, paellas of

various sorts, tortillas, carnes en salsa and a whole mountain of delicious dishes to try. In the casetas, again you will see traditional dancing and music – ranging from Sevillanas, Rumbas, Fandango, Popular music, Cuban/Salsa as well as Verdiales, which are the unique folk dances from the various villages in Andalucia.

D

aytime celebrations are held in the centre of the town, particularly along the Calle Larios and into the square at the top of this pedestrianised street. After 6 pm the action moves to the feria ground that is outside the city centre, fairly near the airport, where you will find concerts, fairground rides and more music, food and drink. But

don’t worry if you’re not sure how to get there, there are plenty of shuttle buses running – their drivers certainly know the way – and they run all night long!

T

onight, Wednesday, at 11pm there is a Grand Gala with singers Achicora and Malu in the Municipal Auditorium. Entrance is €5.

O

n Thursday at 9pm the Malaga Feria King and Queen will be chosen in the same auditorium.

F

riday at 7pm and 11pm there will be a bull fight at the Plaza de Torros in Malaga which is very near to the end of the port. Also at 11pm in the feria ground there is planned the “Festival of Flamenco” and at the Caseta Municipal de Juventud there is Skazz Jazz,

Utopica, Futu Matano and 12:13 Reggae Band.

parking is plentiful around the feria ground and in the town – just follow the parking signs. The Port can take 30,000 cars and an additional 11,000 spaces have been made available around Málaga, so there should be room for everyone. For information of all the events and their times (subject to changes) go to www.serviciosprensamalag a.es/malakao/programa_fe ria_malaga_2011

S

aturday from mid-day until 6.30pm you can watch the parade of horses in the fairground and then at 11pm enjoy the music with Patricia Lan and Merche, while at the same time in the Caseta Juventud, London Avenue, Sexy Sadie and Trio de Saco play until the wee small hours of the morning for the teens to enjoy. Many bars along the Costa have been having trouble recently, being stopped when they are having live music gigs or being closed down altogether because of ‘unacceptable’ noise levels. However, neighbouring Spanish bars that have loud music are being passed by. There was a meeting at one o’clock on Tuesday in Fuengirola between bar owners, the councillor for security and police Rodrigo Romero, and the councillor for foreign residents Katja Wester Dahl. Bar owners complained that police are even turning up to tell them to move chairs and tables from the terrace but are neglecting to

Sr. Romero said that bar owners should approach him directly in future if they have a grievance. In the meantime the Costa is left with few bars that can hold live gigs until this mess is sorted out which means musicians and up-and-coming talent have nowhere to work.

Mad Terry, a legend in his own lunchtime! Why “Mad”? Because of his antics on stage. Mad Terry is a true showman from the old school of entertainment and with his boundless energy, his shows are a must-see. There are many singers all around the world, but not many entertainers. Mad Terry is both. From comedy to opera – a voice that can copy the “greats” such as Elvis, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darren, Louis Armstrong – you should hear Terry’s version of “It’s a Wonderful World” – and many, many more. Mad Terry says: “I sing using other people’s voices because my own voice is rubbish!” He has worked in TV and theatre for 38 years this year, starting with his brother Daniel when he was 15years-old at Butlin’s Holiday Camp in Bognor Regis in the South of England. He has worked with many of the stars of stage and TV such as Jimmy Tarbuck, Jasper Carrot, John Lodge of the

Captain America

I

e First Avenger By Joe Johnston starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving Marvel Studios mine one of their most familiar characters for this summer's blockbuster, in the shape of Captain America. He has no superhero powers, and the arch-enemy are the Nazis as America finds itself plunged into WWII. Steve Rogers (The Fantastic Four's Evans) is a 90-pound weakling who volunteers to take part in an experimental programme

that turns him into a supersoldier. The CGI in the early part of the movie cleverly reduces Evans - who is well buff in real life - into the puny guy who is transformed by secret chemicals into the beefy Captain America, who is initially employed as a propaganda figure selling war bonds. But then he teams up Bucky Barnes (Stan) and Peggy Carter

(Hayley Atwell) and they embark on a secret mission behind enemy lines, where they wage war on the evil organisation HYDRA, led by the villainous Red Skull (Weaving). It's a simple tale of hero versus villain, and the day is saved in the nick of time as the Captain's red, white and blue shield is used to bash the baddies over the head. It's a retrostyle war movie, enlivened

by contemporary visual effects and CGI and, of course, provides the back story for Captain America, who will be starring in 2012's blockbuster The Avengers, alongside Thor, The Hulk and Iron Man, among others. Indeed Tony Stark's (Iron Man) inventor father Howard features briefly in Captain America. Perfect popcorn fun.

happened upon the original Herbie movie on the TV the other day and as I watched it, I wondered how it could have been such a success in its day. Apart from the promising premise that a cute car has its own personality, the film is embarrassingly bad, and I couldn’t help but wonder how it would be received in the cinema today.

O

ur humour and tastes are certainly more refined and sophisticated today. Having said that, there is some humour that doesn’t date, and many films that don’t date. Even obviously bad sets and backdrops do not detract from a good film, whereas the use of special effects often only hastens its sell by date.

T

he Marx Brothers’ movies are about the only humorous films that have stood the test of time, but they always were light years ahead of themselves. The humorous situations that always appear in Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers films are very lame but of course everything is forgiven when the dancing begins.

asy Rider was a highly acclaimed movie in its day. It brought Jack Nicholson to the attention of cinema goers and the soundtrack was memorable. Watching that movie again all these years later, you can’t help but wonder what all the fuss was about. Were people really so easily pleased then? And when did everyone suddenly become a critic? If anyone brought out a movie as bad as “Alice’s Restaurant” today, I am sure it would be released straight on to DVD….but who didn’t love Arlo in the 60’s?

S

o what is it about a film that can make us watch and enjoy it again and again, year after year? Good acting, good script and good direction I would say are the main elements and to hell with the set and the continuity! When a forlorn James Stewart is propping up the bar in “It’s a Wonderful Life” his top shirt button is open, then closed, then open….who cares? It’s a wonderful picture!

S

o what makes a musical memorable? The music of course. Hence it is not surprising that despite its Academy win, “Dream Girls” kind of sank without a trace. I watched this film purely out of curiosity and found it so easily forgettable, (and dare I say boring). Some of the musical numbers sounded as they were being made up as they went along, and I can remember nothing of the film.

C

hristina Aguilera did her very best to keep that albatross of a movie, “Burlesque” afloat, but for all her concerted effort, that too sank because the music was not memorable. (Plus the choreographer was a Bob Fosse copycat). The missing ingredient is the music of Irving Berlin and I fear we shall never see (or hear) his like again.

F

ilms are like clothes. There are fashionable clothes that everyone likes at the time and then years later feel embarrassed to have ever worn them. And then there is style, elegant classical lines that never date. Have a think about a film that impressed you years ago, and if you get the opportunity to view it again, take it, and see if your reaction to it changed.

This is a time when only creative solutions or out-of-the-box thinking will provide the means of understanding the intense situation that is occurring. At the moment things are literally falling from the sky. Often you are thought of as being born without a rule book but this is where that naivety leaves you in a position of strength. It is time for change, so do things in your own unique way and watch the tide turn. Assume nothing right now. You need to pay close attention to what others are saying, ask questions if you are not sure. There are a lot of changes coming to your life in the very near future. At the moment you can hold an objective viewpoint and can clearly see what needs to be done and in what order. As long as these insights are not tainted with emotional desires then they can be considered as reliable. Focus on your foundations, make them strong. Unless you can get to the nitty gritty in a conversation you will probably not be interested in the exchange – deep insights and informative dialogue is what you crave right now. You are looking to build a bridge between your ideas, philosophies and that of reality. As the week heads towards the weekend you will become a lot lighter, still preferring to listen more than speak, which I have to say is unusual for a Gemini! The key is to bring simplicity back into your life. Just because you don’t throw your weight around and scream and shout to get your voice heard it doesn’t mean that you don’t have an influence – even the subtle word delivered to the right person, in the correct environment at the right time can have a profound effect. You have the capability of influencing an important process and just because your delivery is not the same as everyone else’s – know that it is just as valid and is extremely potent. The way may not be clear or it feels that some things are out of your control right now, but this is not the time to just give up and do nothing. There is still much that you can do to influence an outcome so keep up the action, even if motivating yourself seems harder than usual. Others naturally look to you to set an example for leadership and to take a viewpoint on something; this in turn helps them to ask questions – even if the outcome opposes your viewpoint, you are a catalyst. Being in the eye of a storm is not always the best place to be but it does have its advantages as you emerge from it. You are on the emerging side where you are about to see the rewards for all your past efforts. It is a point of culmination and by the weekend a whole new horizon will present itself, you will either have to pick up the debris and re-build certain aspects, or the storm would have totally cleared the pathway. One thing is for sure you will know the next step.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

With the weather still boiling hot, you don’t always want potatoes and vegetables. This is something you can do in advance before the sun comes up in the morning or even the night before when the sun has gone down and it’s not too hot to be standing by the stove. However, if you are going to do it in advance, make sure that the rice is properly chilled in the fridge then cooked all the way through to reheat it. Add whatever other meat or fish dishes you like. White pepper is the perfect choice to use with any Asian dish. Its special flavour goes well with this style of cooking. Refrigerated rice is used in this recipe because when rice is chilled, the grains don't tend to stick together. This makes it the perfect consistency for fried rice dishes.

Chinese egg fried rice Ingredients: ● 350g pre-cooked long grain rice (refrigerated) ● 4 tbsp oyster sauce ● 2 tbsp soy sauce ● 2 eggs, beaten ● 4 tbsp vegetable oil ● 2 tbsp shredded carrots ● 4 tbsp frozen peas, thawed ● 1 spring onion, sliced ● 2 garlic cloves, minced ● salt and white pepper

● fresh ham cut into small pieces (Optional)

Directions 1. Add a little oil to a hot wok, drop in the beaten egg and stir rapidly to break it up. 2. Add another drop of oil to the wok, followed by the garlic and the rice. 3. Stir until well mixed. 4. Add the peas, carrots, and spring onions and mix thoroughly. 5. Add the ham now if using.

6. Add the oyster and soy sauces and season with salt and white pepper. 7. Toss it all together and remove from the heat. Spoon the egg fried rice into individual serving bowls and it is ready to serve. This egg fried rice recipe can be modified by using leftover vegetables or meat.

Worst female health habits

Relax and treat your poor tired feet! Last Saturday I found myself with my feet killing me so, rather than just going home I decided I would go and try out the Fish Pedicure treatment.

Being healthy doesn’t just mean eating properly and exercising regularly. It also means getting rid of the following bad female habits: Wearing heels High heels affect our posture, put pressure on joints, and can lead to a range of conditions including arthritis, hammer toes, back pain and tendon injuries – not to mention heel-related accidents! To minimise damage, limit your heels to 1.5 inches for daily wear, and wear insoles to help reduce the pressure on joints. Carrying a heavy handbag While you may not feel the effects right now, lugging around a heavy handbag can lead to serious back problems and neck pain as well as poor posture. Don’t wait until the damage is done – do your health a favour and try clearing out all non-essential items and

switching to a smaller bag. Sleeping in makeup Resist the temptation to sleep in makeup “because it’s late”. Leaving makeup on overnight – along with the dirt and oil that naturally accumulates on skin throughout the day – is a quick route to clogged pores, congested skin and spots. Sleeping with mascara and eye makeup on can also affect your health by causing eye irritation, bloodshot eyes or even infection.

Fish Pedicure opened just three months ago. The Garra Rufa fish that are used are naturally “cleaning fish” that know exactly what your feet need. They will give you a full pedicure or just a gentle massage to invigorate and relax. The treatment also benefits those with psoriasis and excema among a host of dermatolgical problems, but can also be beneficial for those with dry skin, swollen ankles, corns and callouses on the feet. The practice of Fish Pedicure has been used in Asia for decades but has only recently been available in the West. In Asia, Fish

Pedicure is also a social event where friends sit and relax with their feet in the pools while having a chat. Lisa aims to do a similar thing here on the Costa del Sol to help you relax and give a pleasurable experience. The fish are given a special supplement to keep them healthy, happy and ready to do a good job for your feet. I was a bit wary of the idea of having fish nibbling at my feet but the truth is that they have no teeth. They gently exfoliate and suck the dead skin off and it feels just a bit tingly, as if you’ve got your feet in a bath of champagne. Wonderful!

so you know that the treatment is as it should be. The fish cannot transmit diseases which might worry some people and the water they are in is constantly changed so everything is safe and hygienic. The treatment lasts 15 minutes and costs just €10 – sooo worth it to make your feet feel happy ! Their advert says it will probably be the best €10 you’ll ever spend and, after Saturday, I’m inclined to agree! Christie Wright Hopefully the riots in the UK are all done and dusted now, but for how long I wonder. As someone who came to Spain to live from London, where I was born and brought up, because there started to get a very “edgy” feel to the place some twenty years ago, it made my blood boil to see what people were doing to the areas they lived in. I’m in my early forties so no, I don’t remember the Blitz, but my grandparents certainly do and, although everyone did indeed pretty much stick together there was always the odd “spiv” around to sell you nylons etc., something we can see on the old films and in Dad’s Army on the television. I found the speed with which

Ben Chancery I was interested in the article last week on your “Out and About” pages in respect of British bars being visited by police to turn off their live music. On the one hand, I wonder how many of these Brit bars actually have a live music licence in the first place. If they are operating illegally then the police have every right to close them down.

Benalmadena

the perpetrators were moving and then gathering in a different location to cause even more damage to property frightening. I understand that they were communicating by email, via iPhones and Facebook and Twitter sites. However, as I understand it, the police etc can put a blanket shut-down on these sites within a given area without affecting their own emergency services or communications so, why wasn’t that done? It’s not as if they were going to affect business by doing so as it was the middle of the night and, without communication these thugs and looters couldn’t have let each other know what the police movements were as easily and perhaps the situation could

have been calmed more quickly and easily.

By Ken Campbell

It’s time that the people of Britain went back to showing respect for authority - let’s face it, there was no indication from the people that were rioting, and having what seemed to me a jolly good night out while doing it, that they had any respect for authority whatsoever. It’s time to take back our streets and our lives without our old folks being frightened of being mugged if they step outside their own doorstep, to have much, much tougher sentencing and give our police, teachers and parents the power to “sort it out” even if it means a good clip round the ear from time to time.

Fuengirola On the other hand I also wonder how many of the Spanish bars that aren’t, apparently, touched by the police have licences. Most of the Spanish bars, I suspect, have been there for years and were owned by their fathers and their fathers before them, probably before licences were even thought up as a way of bringing more money into the coffers.

Stargazing

I’m all for foreigners coming here as long as they play by the rules and, yes, it is us Brits who are the foreigners here, which is something a lot of us seem to forget when it suits us. However, all that said, it would be a great shame to lose these venues as places where old rockers, such as myself can go along to and enjoy the music and a pint or two and also, where are all the young, upand-coming new generation of musicians and performers going to go to to get some practice in before they hit the “big-time”? Maybe if they started a bit earlier, like they would in the UK at, say, 8pm and finished at 11pm there wouldn’t be so many complaints about the noise levels. Last comment: Are they going to stop the Spaniards having conversations in the street next? They are deafening!

How Far Can You See? When you look up at the stars at night have you ever wondered what is the farthest that you can see?

W

hen we talk about the distances to the stars we can’t use miles or kilometres as a measurement, the numbers are just too big to comprehend. Instead astronomers use a measurement called light years. So what is a light year?

Y I

ou might need a calculator for this!

f you switch a torch on and shine it at a wall, the light leaves the torch and travels the short distance and strikes the wall almost instantaneously. Now travel 186,000 miles away or about three-quarters of the way to the Moon. Now switch the torch on and the light will take one second to hit the wall since light travels at 186,000 miles per second. The Moon is one and a half light seconds away.

N

ow multiply 186,000 miles by 60 that’s the number of seconds in a minute (it comes to about 11 million miles). If you stood 11 million miles away it would take one minute for the light to leave the torch and hit the wall. The Sun is about eight light minutes away, so you are seeing the Sun as it was eight minutes ago.

N

ow multiply this number by another 60, the number of minutes in an hour. You are now one light hour away and standing near Saturn; the light you see from Saturn took one hour to reach you.

O

K, now multiply that number by 24, that’s the number of hours in a day. You are now standing just outside the solar system past Pluto. It now takes one whole day for the light from the torch to reach the wall.

N

ow multiply that by 365, the number of days in a year. You are now standing one light year from the Earth. Or 5,865,696,000,000 miles that is almost 6 million, million miles!

T

he closest star to the Sun is actually a group of three stars called Alpha Centauri and is 4.5 light years away. If you drew a circle around the Sun that was 10 light years’ wide then there are less than 10 stars in that circle.

G

o outside at this time of the year and you will see three very bright stars directly overhead that make up the

summer triangle and all appear more or less the same brightness. The brightest of the three, Vega, is 25 light years away. Altair is 16 light years away. Slightly fainter is Deneb at over 1550 light years away, one of the most distant stars visible to the naked eye.

O

ur Galaxy is 100,000 light years across but, if it were shrunk down to one metre across, then all the stars that you are able to see in the night sky would be inside a circle less than 3mm across. So we really can’t see very far at all!

B

ut if you know exactly where to look in the sky and on a perfectly dark, clear night you may be able to spot the Andromeda galaxy, a collection of over 600 billion stars. The Andromeda Galaxy is over two and a half million light years away and is the most distant object that can be seen with the naked eye. The light that you can see left the Andromeda galaxy before humans had inhabited the Earth!

A

nd ‘out there’ are an infinite number of galaxies all containing billions of other stars just like our Sun. In 1995 the Hubble Space Telescope took a photograph of a tiny portion of space equal to just 1/28,000,000th of the whole sky where there were no stars from our galaxy to get in the way. When the photograph was ‘developed’ it was found to contain an almost uncountable number of other galaxies the most distant of which was estimated to be over 12 billion light years away. By comparison, the Sun is six billion years old!

Boa under the bonnet! Bosch Car Service garage, Carringtons of Oxford, came across a slippery customer when carrying out an MOT – a five-foot long Boa constrictor! Wayne Hunt, the Bosch technician carrying out the MOT on the MINI Cooper, put his hand under the bonnet to find the safety release catch and felt something that seemed rather out of place, which turned out to be the five-foot long, five-inch thick snake. Wayne said: “We’re more used to working on brakes than snakes!”

Stoner romps to win in Brno Cameron’s car As Pedrosa’s love affair with the tarmac continues, Casey Stoner brings it home goes Crrrunch again. Pedrosa had been the form man throughout the weekend, topping every dry session and starting the race from pole position, but just as he had snatched the lead from Jorge Lorenzo on lap three, he crashed into retirement. Casey Stoner led an allHonda podium at Brno, the Australian overcoming handling problems in practice to easily claim his sixth victory of the season and build his lead to a newhigh of 32 points over Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.

Over eight-seconds ahead at one stage, Stoner crossed the line 6.5sec ahead of team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, and Marco Simoncelli finally stood on a MotoGP podium for the first time. The San Carlo Honda Gresini rider, a front-row starter six times this season but a faller in five races and penalised in another, moved into the coveted top three by overtaking world champion Jorge Lorenzo at

The Prime Minister was saying goodbye to staff at the looted Lidl supermarket when the driver of his dark blue Jaguar XJ manoeuvred into position to whisk the PM off - but misjudged it. Despite being bombproof and bullet proof it came off second best with the kerb which bashed-in its pristine side. the halfway stage of the Brno race. Simoncelli remained in close contact with fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso throughout, although he admitted after such a tumultuous season he was more than content to settle for third. But that didn't mean he could relax as Lorenzo put on a late spurt and Simoncelli claimed the final podium place by less than a second at the chequered flag. “If we look at points it's an important win, and it couldn't work out much better. This weekend has

been very, very tough and I was a little bit worried going into the race as to how competitive we'd be," admitted Stoner. "As soon as the race got underway I was having a good battle with Andrea, but this cost me a little time and I was afraid that Jorge and Dani would stretch away from me. But when I got past I found I had plenty of speed to catch up and the bike felt great. "I passed Jorge and then Dani sadly crashed out so I pushed to see if I could pull

F1 race in New York? The U.S. Grand Prix in Austin feels years away, but will run next year. The race in Indianapolis from 2000 to 2007 never took off. Now, before Austin has even happened, let alone proved itself, there is again talk of another Grand Prix in the United States — in New York.

Journal, “Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner and West New York Mayor Dr. Felix Roque confirmed that they had met with the motor racing investors, headed by former cable network TV head Leo Hindery Jr., about the possibility of hosting an annual Formula One race.

It is not a secret that having a race in New York City is one of Bernie Ecclestone’s dreams. Now the mayors of Weehawken and West New York are talking with a group of investors about having a Formula One race in the North Hudson area, perhaps as early as in 2013.

“The race is expected to make use of Boulevard East and River Road on the waterfront with Manhattan in the background.”

According to a report last week in The Jersey

Both the Jersey Journal and Autosport.com in England referred to a joint press release by the mayors on Tuesday, although it was not generally distributed to the auto racing media. “In these uncertain

economic times when every direct and indirect revenue source is vital, our own Formula One race could be a very positive boost to our citizens,” the statement read. “This said, we need to ensure that the financial benefits from the privilege of having these races in our towns are equitably shared and that no tax dollars are used. “The investor group has already told us that our towns would be substantially compensated annually.” Last year, a proposal to run a race in Liberty State Park failed.

a gap. I put in a heck of a lot more effort and decided to lay it on the line. Once we had the break I just concentrated on consistency and brought it home. "Again it's a fantastic result. This one felt good, Tomorrow we'll be back on the 1000 for another day of testing, so I hope the weather stays dry for us!" The MotoGP paddock will remain at Brno for Monday's post-race test, when Stoner will get his second chance (after his two-day test at Jerez in May) to ride next year's 1000cc machine.

David Cameron was visiting Salford to meet with police and fire officers who were in the thick of Tuesday night's violence. The car pulled up and Mr Cameron, seemingly unaware of the prang, jumped in and with a wave was whisked away. Rookie Bradley wins US PGA Keegan Bradley winner of the 2011 PGA Championship left his rented townhouse on Sunday with a batch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made fresh by his mother, Kay. Just before he drove away, Keegan Bradley told her, "I'm gonna do it, Mom." "I know," she said. "Yes, you are." And then he drove to the Atlanta Athletic Club, teed off at 2:30 p.m. local time, overcame a five-stroke deficit with just three holes left to play, somehow squeezed his way into a playoff with Jason Dufner and made the kind of golf history that lasts forever. Bradley not only won the PGA Championship, but he won it in his first majors appearance. That's not too big of a deal, except it's only the third time in nearly the last 100 years that someone has done that. Now he has a five-year exemption to the Masters, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship. He can play the PGA Championship until he drops. "That's unbelievable, considering the fact that two and a half years ago I was playing on the Hooters Tour grinding for survival to keep playing," said Bradley, who ended the Americans' majors winless streak at six.

Sunday night. They also remain major-less in their careers. Donald (No. 1) and Westwood (No. 2) both climbed into contention in the final round at the PGA only to come away empty handed. Donald had the best chance, reaching 5-under as he stood on the 15th tee, four shots off the lead. He promptly plopped his tee shot in the water.

"It's amazing what comes with winning a PGA Tour event. I have no idea what comes with winning a major right now." A check for $1.445 million comes with it. A Monday media tour comes with it. A round of golf with his Patriots football hero might come with it. "I'd love to play with Tom Brady," Bradley said of the Patriots' Quarter Back. "He's one of my idols. That would be a dream come true."

Bradley's father, Mark, is a PGA professional, which is only fitting since this is the tournament chartered by those club pros. And Bradley's aunt is none other than Pat Bradley, the LPGA legend and World Golf Hall of Fame member. With Jason Dufner coming 2nd, Sweden’s Anders Hansen took the third place spot just one shot off the play-off. Luke Donald and Lee Westwood remained the top two players in the world rankings released on

Donald also made bogey on No. 18 to finish at 68 for the day, the same score Westwood posted. They each were 3-under for the tournament, five shots out of the Jason Dufner/Keegan Bradley playoff.

of last season. The close season has seen Malaga spend around 60€ million on players. The likes of Spanish internationals Carzola and Monreal, Toulalon from Lyon, exManchester Utd forward Ruud Van Nistolroy, Sevilla's Sanchez, (the 25-year-old was limited to seven appearances last season for Sevilla after undergoing heart surgery), Buenanotte from Argentina and Isco - to name a just a few who will be linking up with the players

that finished the season so well last year. A mouthwatering prospect of a European position. The pre-season has been good with the team only losing one game at a very hot Cadiz and after only playing 24 hours previously. They ended the preseason on Saturday with a 4-0 win against Uraguayan side Penarol in front of 15,000 spectators at La Roselada. The Barca game has been a sell out for two weeks now

and with 26,500 season tickets sold, La Roselada being full for every home game should be a great advantage for Malaga.

They claimed the top spot in the world rankings by thrashing India in the third Test at Edgbaston - by an innings and 242 runs. Part of the victory, which has also helped them win

the four-match series, was down to Alistair Cook who scored a whopping 294 runs. Captain Andrew Strauss said the team's success was a reward for all their hard work, but they want to get even better. "I feel proud and honoured, not just at what we've achieved in this

The London-Surrey Cycle Classic took the riders from The Mall in central London to Box Hill and back. There were some reports of problems caused by widespread road closures and bus diversions along the route.

"You can't get a sense of how the 2012 race will go, but you can get a feel for this course and the route is good."

Debbie Jevans, director of sport for London 2012 organising committee Locog, said she was "very, very pleased" with the way it went. Thousands of spectators who lined the course to get an idea of what the Olympics will be like saw Tour de France green jersey

They returned through Esher and Kingston upon Thames before the home leg back to The Mall. The route passed through six London boroughs and four Royal parks.

Chelsea star’s father abducted in Nigeria

A Europa League spot would do for me! VAMOS MALAGA!

Nigeria and Chelsea star John Mikel Obi's father has been abducted in Nigeria, according to his management. Michael Obi has not been seen or heard from since he failed to return home from work on Friday in Jos, the capital of central Nigerian Plateau state.

The race started at The Mall before heading through west London and into Richmond Park. The cyclists then passed Hampton Court Palace, Walton-on-Thames, Guildford and Dorking before two circuits of Box Hill in Surrey, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

European football next season does look inviting but it may take time for the team to gel, just look at Manchester City.

England cricketers rise to the top of the world rankings England's cricketers have become the best Test team in the world.

Organisers have hailed as a success the biggest test event yet for the 2012 Olympic Games, with some of the world's top cyclists riding through London.

There was a bonus for an estimated 100,000-strong home crowd, as British cyclist Mark Cavendish rode to victory.

Malaga’s spending spree gives fans hope What a season to look forward too, and for me personally I cannot wait for Sunday, especially with Malaga hosting the mighty Barcelona. But it will be a very different team from the one that faced the La Liga Champions in the last game

more to come." One of their next goals is to win the fourth Test to give them a 4-0 clean sweep in the series.

SEM said no ransom demand had yet been received and that Mikel had decided to play in the match "so as not to let down his team and family". "It's been tough for the young man," The Chelsea

player's agent John Ola Shittu said. "The family in Jos reported him missing at the police station as expected but we're taking all necessary measures to find him. We've told the young man to be brave and to stay calm." Shittu said the family has also not heard from anyone claiming to hold Obi senior. Kidnappings - more often of oil workers - are a common occurrence in Nigeria. Footballers and their families are increasingly being targetted. In July 2008, the elder brother of Nigerian and Everton defender Joseph Yobo was seized in Port Harcourt, where kidnappings for ransom are most frequent. It was not clear if a ransom was paid but Nornu Yobo was released after being held for almost two weeks

Newcastle and Arsenal face FA charges Newcastle and Arsenal have been charged by the Football Association with failing to control their players in Saturday's Premier League game. Gunners’ striker Gervinho was sent off after 76 minutes following an altercation with Joey Barton. Barton had pulled him up from the floor to accuse him of diving but Gervinho slapped him, leading to a tussle. Arsenal's Alex Song has also been charged with violent conduct after an earlier incident involving Barton.

Much for teams to ponder in run-up to World Cup England manager Martin Johnson revealed in the wake of his side's Millennium Stadium defeat to Wales that he knows the make-up of the 30-man squad that will board the plane to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup. The identity of those individuals will not be confirmed to the wider world until August 22nd, giving everyone a week or so to debate the make-up of that party. Who's in? Who's out? Johnson made an initial

cut to his squad earlier this month, casting aside flanker Joe Worsley and winger David Strettle among others. Ten more players are set to suffer World Cup heartache in the next week although injuries may yet cause a rethink. Wales coach Warren Gatland is set to recall trio Adam Jones, Leigh Halfpenny and Lee Byrne to the side to face Argentina on Saturday. Ospreys prop Jones has been struggling

with a toe injury, while Halfpenny (ankle) and Byrne (knee) have also been fitness concerns with Wales' opening World Cup contest against South Africa less than four weeks away. But Gatland has had to wait over the fitness of a further quartet of players ahead of this weekend's final World Cup warm-up game. Gethin Jenkins, Ryan Jones, Stephen Jones and Rhys Priestland (all calf) were put through their paces yesterday as they sought to prove their availability. Centre Gavin Henson is another who may yet experience World Cup heartache as the dislocated bone in his wrist is set to sideline him for six to eight weeks, although Wales have not ruled out taking him to New Zealand to feature in the latter stages. The World Cup 2011 gets under way on the 9th of September with hosts New Zealand against Tonga. England play Argentina on the 10th, while Scotland go against Romania. Wales and Ireland both begin their campaigns on the 11th September, against South Africa and the USA respectively.

"I was just a servant and spent eight years there when I gave absolutely everything, it didn't show in the cabinet, I only won one FA Cup really, and this is the biggest regret I will have in my career, probably, not to be able to lift a trophy as Arsenal captain.” "I will always be an Arsenal fan because what they have done for me is unbelievable and I will never forget it." Fabregas also paid tribute to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, saying: "Wenger is a special person to me. He'll always be a second father to me.

The Grand National course at Aintree will be changed for 2012 after a review of April's race in which two horses were fatally injured. A reduction of between four and five inches to the drop on the landing side of Becher's Brook is among the changes. Old-time jockeys used to say that clearing Becher’s, with its massive drop on the landing side, was like jumping off the edge of the world. But the death of Dooneys Gate, who broke his back jumping Becher’s in the last running of the race, prompted increased pressure from animal welfare organisations to change a fence last modified in 1990. The drop on the landing side of the first will also be reduced while the height of the toe boards around the course will increase to make it easier for horses to determine the base of the fences. "Raising the landing zone at Becher's Brook is undoubtedly a positive step forward," said RSPCA equine consultant David Muir. "

The Norwegian, winner of two stages at the Tour de France, had continued his superb form throughout the seven-day race and he was once again given brilliant support by his team-mates. In terms of the overall, Boasson topped the standings by 22 seconds from Philippe Gilbert, with a further six seconds back to David Millar (GarminCervelo). It was his second Eneco Tour title, having won the event in 2009. The points’ jersey and the young rider's jersey were also both claimed by Boasson Hagen. Report courtesy of www.teamsky.com

Real Madrid sign seven year old Argentine boy Spanish giants Real Madrid have signed the boy, Leonel Angel Coira who has lived in Spain for three years, after he was spotted firstly by Atletico Madrid scouts. According to his father, Miguel Coira, after doing tests for both teams he felt more comfortable at Real Madrid. He will start training with the children’s team in September on a one-year renewable contract. He can join the first team at the age of 16. Spokesman Juan Tapiador said the club took on players of any age as long as they offered “something different”. Coira goes by the nickname Leo like his idol, fellow Argentine Lionel Messi, in whose footsteps Coira is keen to follow. “(My) dream is to meet Messi, play in the first division for Madrid and for Argentina in the World Cup”, Coira told the Spanish Newspaper ABC.
