Rebels break into Gaddafi Compound Libyan rebels burst into Col Muammar Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli, one of the final areas under the Libyan leader's control, late on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, heavily armed fighters had streamed into the capital in dozens of pick-up trucks to attack the compound. A rebel leader said the appearance of Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam in Tripoli overnight, just hours after rebels said he had been captured, was
embarrassing, but would not stop their advance. Saif al-Islam spoke to journalists at the Rixos Hotel early on Tuesday, insisting the government had "broken the backbone" of the rebel offensive and that his father's supporters were winning the battle. But western politicians,

The price of a barrel of crude oil has gone down and, although I tend to be one of those people who don’t really - as a general rule - look at the price of the diesel I’m putting in my tank (I can’t see the point as the car won’t go without it however much I moan about the cost) why, when I went to Antequera to our printers to deliver some leaflets last Thursday, was the price there €1.21 and when I got back as far as here it was €1.25 a litre. That’s a difference of 4 cents a litre which adds up to one helluva lot on the price of a full tank. I can see no reason other than greed from the big petrol companies such as Shell, BP and Repsol that are the garages we have here in coin. I know that it’s usually a bit cheaper if you go to the Miramar filling station in Fuengirola but the one in Antequera was a “Tangerina” station and I know there’s one just off the motorway at Benalmadena so, before you get ripped off in that area, pop up and have a look at their prices first. It may save you a lot of hard earned money over the course of a year! The rows about the uK riots is carrying on and it seems the police and courts are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. While they were happening, the general population were braying for blood. now it’s simmered down, they’re saying that the sentences are too harsh! True, four years seems a long time for incitement to riot via Facebook but whether or not people took them up on it is irrelevant, at the time if their idea to riot in another area had kicked off, it could have cost yet another person their life and is that what people want? To see that poor scooter rider being dragged across the street by his rucksack while another rioter nicked his bike was sickening. Tough sentences are exactly what the uK needs right now.
Rebels break into Gaddafi Compound Television footage showed gangs of rebels gathered about 50m from the compound dressed in civilian clothes, some armed with rifles, others unarmed. The sound of shells exploding could be heard nearby. Later reports said hundreds of fighters had breached one of the gates of the compound, and that gangs were inside firing guns into the air to celebrate. Meanwhile, members of the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) in Benghazi plan to fly to the capital on Wednesday to start forming a new government, but that will depend on Tripoli's airport being secure, which does not appear to be the case at present. NTC chairman Mustafa Abdul Jalil has said all Gaddafi aides will face justice and fair criminal
trials, adding that he will stand trial for the years he served as a minister in the Gaddafi government. NTC leaders are worried about revenge attacks by some of the mosaic of different groups which make up the revolutionary army, as a bloodbath in Tripoli would undermine the rebels' claim to legitimacy and the international support that has brought victory within their grasp.
In other developments: – Turkey is to give $300 million to the NTC, including funds to form the new government – The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said a boat it sent to Tripoli to evacuate migrant workers was unable to dock because of the security
situation – Egypt and Bahrain formally recognised the NTC as the legitimate government of the Libyan people The rebels swept into Tripoli at the weekend, but after a swift advance, they met stiff resistance in a number of areas on Monday. While world leaders have urged Col Gaddafi to step down, the question on everyone's lips as The News went to press is: Where is he? Audio broadcast messages have been Col Gaddafi's way of making his presence felt during the fierce fighting between rebels and government troops in recent months, but he has not been seen in public since May and one of his last TV appearances was in mid-June when he was pictured playing chess with

the World Chess Federation president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. If he has remained in his compound in the Libyan capital, then his whereabouts will be confirmed sooner rather than later. His Bab al-Aziziya residence remains a key target for rebels now that they have breached the compound walls. But speculation is rife as to where else he might be. One of the most persistent rumours is that he left Tripoli some time ago and may have gone to his birthplace of Sirte, on the western coast, or his ancestral home of Sabha in the south. However, there are also rumours that he may have fled the country.
South Africa – which has led mediation efforts by the African Union to seek a solution to the crisis – was forced on Monday to deny it had sent planes to Libya to help Col Gaddafi escape, while unnamed rebels have been quoted as saying that Col Gaddafi and some of his family are "near to the Algerian border". The US defence department said on Monday it believed he was still in Libya. Pentagon spokesman Col Dave Lapan said no information had been received about Gaddafi having left the country, but did not give further details. Wherever he is, it is impossible to predict how it will all end for the flamboyantly-dressed, maverick leader who has portrayed himself as the spiritual guide of the nation for more than 40 years.

Foreign minister miffs Israel The chief of the European section of Israel's Foreign Ministry summoned Spanish Ambassador Álvaro Iranzo on Monday to complain about comments made by foreign minister Trinidad Jiménez (pictured) in favour of the recognition of Palestine in an interview with El Pais newspaper last week. The subject is on the agenda of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Sopot, Poland, on September 22nd, when
Sra Jiménez hopes to broker an agreement in support of "moving forward with the recognition of the state of Palestine". Failure to do so could generate "a great deal of frustration among the Palestinian people". Israel's deputy foreign minister, Daniel Ayalon, will meet his counterpart, Juan Antonio Yáñez, in Madrid this week to "explain Israel's position on the Palestinian initiative."
At a special cabinet meeting last Friday, the government reduced the value-added tax on new housing purchases from eight to four per cent in an effort to revive the moribund housing market. An estimated 700,000 new housing units built during the decade-long construction boom that burst over three years ago remain unsold. House prices have fallen continuously since then, but they need to drop more to get the market moving again. Sales of new homes
in the first half of this year fell by 10.1 per cent. Economy Minister Elena Salgado stressed that the cut in VAT would be a temporary move aimed at trying to jump-start the market, while the Partido Popular has suggested it should be extended to
2013. The Cabinet also approved spending cuts of some €2.4 billion on medicines, partly through the greater use of generic drugs. The prices of drugs with patents that have been on the market for more than 10 years will also be cut by 15 per cent.

Prison sought for Spanair mechanics
Rubalcaba calls for rethink of provincial bodies Socialist candidate Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said last week that the provincial delegations - intermediate institutions between municipal town halls and regional governments - are "superfluous," and need a thorough overhaul. He told a party political rally in Santander that they “form part of a 19thcentury structure and their reform could save the country €1,000 million”. The main role of the 38 existing provincial delegations is to distribute funds among small municipalities for various expenses and investment.
Partido Popular spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons said that delegations are “the ultimate guarantee of many small municipalities” while admitting that “we have three times more than we need”. Juan Manuel Moreno, who is responsible for the PP's municipal
policies, said some 15 million people live in municipalities with less than 2,000 residents and would suffer from a cut in services if the delegations were eliminated because “the councils have no money”. He said the governments of big regions with a scattered population “don't reach every corner”.
Just before the third anniversary last Saturday of the Barajas air disaster which killed 154 people and injured 18, Madrid's public prosecutor asked for prison sentences of two-and-ahalf to four years, and the revoking of professional licenses for a period of three to six years, for two mechanics charged in the 2008 Spanair accident. The sentences correspond to charges of 154 counts of negligent homicide and 18 counts of bodily harm, which initially are only
against the two Spanair mechanics involved. Judge Javier Pérez has received the final reports on the accident from the Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Committee (CIAIAC) and the court, which attribute the accident to a chain of events, but two causes that stand out: serious human error on the part of the pilots, who forgot to activate the flaps and slats on the wings, which were necessary for take-off; and a technical error in the failure
of the plane's TOWS alarm system to alert the pilots of their error. The two mechanics have been charged with not properly repairing the malfunctioning ram air temperature (RAT) probe that had caused the plane to return to the apron just an hour before the accident. The court report views this error more harshly than the CIAIAC report, concluding that "the maintenance technicians dispatched the plane incorrectly, without identifying the problem."
'Balconing' claims more lives The highly dangerous practice of balconing – when drunk tourists jump from balcony to balcony in their hotels, or from their rooms into the swimming pool – has claimed three lives so far this summer, in Mallorca and Ibiza. The last one was a 20-year-old Italian girl, who died after
jumping from a fourth-floor balcony of a Palma hotel at the beginning of the month. Another 10 people have been seriously injured, including a 21-year-old foreign tourist who jumped from the second floor balcony of his hotel in Palma last Friday. That same day, a 20-year-old British
man broke his arm after jumping from his hotel room in Magaluf, in Mallorca. The Balearic regional government has not followed up its promise at the beginning of the summer to take action to prevent more injuries and deaths.

Inditex, the world's biggest clothes retailer, said the15 people – mostly Bolivians – found in the sweatshop had been illegally employed by a subcontractor without its knowledge. The company, which owns the Spanish fashion chain Zara, said in a statement that it planned to strengthen the oversight
of its production system abroad. Inditex has approximately 50 suppliers in Brazil, which employ more than 7,000 workers. Upon learning of the case, Inditex acted immediately. The company statement said: "The supplier has accepted full responsibility and is paying financial compensation to the
workers as required by Brazilian law and the Inditex Code of Conduct." It also said the supplier was going to improve the subcontractors' working conditions to bring them in line with those at facilities audited and approved by Inditex inspectors. There are hundreds of factories in Sao Paulo state, producing
garments for Brazil's booming market, and the authorities recently formed a special task force to locate and shut down sweatshops. A labour ministry spokesman said many are smuggled into Brazil from Bolivia and can't leave the workshop until they pay for their journey.

Sex scandal inquiry threatens govt Australian police have said they are examining new evidence against MP Craig Thomson from the governing Labour Party who is alleged to have misused his trade union credit card to pay more than $A100,000 (£63,000) for sex with prostitutes. Mr Thomson, who entered parliament after the 2007 election, has claimed that other union officials had access to that credit card, and denies any wrongdoing. A conviction for theft or fraud could bring down Julia Gillard's minority government, which has a working majority of just one
seat. Prime minister Gillard has expressed "full confidence" in Mr Thomson, and said any investigation into his conduct should be allowed to run its course. The new evidence was presented to police by an opposition politician. Mr Thomson holds his seat in the Central Coast of New South Wales
with a majority of 5% and, given the Gillard government's deep unpopularity, the Liberals would be expected to win a by-election hands down. If Labour loses that seat, it also loses its parliamentary majority. The allegations against Mr Thomson were first published two years ago
by local newspapers. He mounted a defamation case against the newspapers – which he later dropped. It has since been reported that the New South Wales Labour party helped Mr Thomson with $A90,000 towards his legal bills. Bankruptcy disqualifies people from sitting in parliament.

US envoy's coffee run amazes Chinese A photograph of new US ambassador to China Gary Locke ordering coffee and carrying his own backpack and a visit by VicePresident Joe Biden to a small Beijing eatery have sparked heated debate among China's “netizens” about the nature of public servants. Many praised the informality of the two men's actions, contrasting them with the statusconscious Chinese officials. The debate started after Mr Locke was photographed at Seattle

Corruption activist 'ready for talks' Indian activist Anna Hazare, who has been on hunger strike for more than a week, is willing to talk to "responsible government mediators" about an anti-corruption bill, his aides said on Tuesday. His arrest on Tuesday of last week just hours before he was to start his public fast sparked mass protests
across India. He refused the government's offer to release him unless he was permitted to resume the protest which triggered his arrest. He finally left jail on Friday after he agreed to a police offer permitting him to go on hunger strike for 15 days. Thousands of supporters are at the Ram Lila ground in Delhi where Mr Hazare is fasting. Mr
Hazare says the government's proposed anti-corruption bill is weak and wants his own tougher version to be passed by parliament. Despite the widespread support for Mr Hazare, his hunger strike has also come in for some criticism, with some public figures saying it threatened democracy.

UK News Double killer to be released back into community Gregory Davis, now 33years-old, pled guilty to two counts of murder, claiming diminished responsibility, less than eight years ago – he has been a patient in a psychiatric facility since then. However, there are plans to allow him back into the community with an Independent Mental Health Tribunal agreeing in principal to Davis’ release at the beginning of August – though he has not yet been released. The Ministry of Justice issued a statement: “Mental Health Tribunals are independent judicial bodies responsible for deciding whether to detain or discharge restricted patients. Conditionally discharged patients are supervised in the community by psychiatric and social workers. They have to comply with certain
conditions to ensure public safety which may include abstaining from alcohol or adhering to certain exclusion zones. They may also be recalled to a secure hospital by the Secretary of State if there is evidence of an increased risk to the public.” Davis’ apparently motiveless attack took place in 2003, when he entered the home of 38year-old Dorothy Rogers. He stabbed her 31 times, killing her. Her 19-year-old son Michael Rogers managed to escape but Davis hunted him down to a children’s play area where he bludgeoned, stabbed and then disembowelled him. Dorothy Rogers’ boyfriend, Mick Cowles was also seriously injured in the attack but survived. After his killing spree, Davis (pictured above) calmly collected his girlfriend and

Two British women have been murdered whilst on holiday in Turkey. Marion Elizabeth Graham and her friend Kathy Dinsmor, both 53years-old and from Newry, County Down in Northern Ireland were on holiday in the Turkish resort of Kusadasi with Marion’s 15year-old daughter, Sahnnon who had met a 17-year-old waiter known to the family as “Alex” during a holiday the previous August. The waiter asked the mother if he could marry her daughter. Permission was refused whereupon the waiter allegedly murdered the two women. Their bodies, with stab wounds and their throats cut, were found in a forest near a graveyard to the east of the port city of Izmir, 75 miles from the resort in which they were staying. At first, the waiter claimed that the women had been kidnapped but later he confessed to their murders and has been charged by Turkish authorities.

In 2006 Goldsborough won the dubious title of making the worst ever score in the modern English game in the North Yorkshire Nidderdale league against the same club being bowled out for just five runs, those being gained by four byes and one leg bye – all ten batsmen were out for a duck! Commuting worse for women Research carried out at Sheffield University has found that women are far more affected by long hours of travel to and from work than men. It has a negative affect on their mental health including stress-related illnesses making women four times more vulnerable to these problems than men, even though it is men who on average spend more time commuting than women. The research, published on Monday in the Jounal of Health Economics drew the conclusion that men are more likely to be relaxed during their journey, reading the newspaper etc than women who will be working their way through a list of things that need to be done – such as organising childcare, what to get during their lunch break for dinner for the family meal after work, and the general running of their household and domestic chores.
Flats row A furious row has developed following the payment of £600,000 to a local Liberal Democrat run Portsmouth council by a development company in the area. The developer, Pierfront had purchased the land in the Southsea area of Portsmouth where the Savoy Hotel burnt down and the site was cleared in 2009. Local residents and councillors said that the site has been an eyesore ever since and were pleased when plans for 92 luxury flats came through. However, the council policy states that 30% of the units must be for social housing (the new words for council house stock) and Pierfront are saying that it would be too costly to develop the site – that will have sea views from glass fronted balconies – taking this into account. One Lib. Dem councillor, Steven Wylie, criticised the decision saying it was putting “profit before people” but Conservative councillor Donna Jones said: "It's vital that this building is built and the area regenerated. It looks an absolute mess at the moment. We need jobs created on the seafront, we need cafes, restaurants, bars – we need people to come and spend their money in Portsmouth and this is the first step in that very, very vital picture." Some prospective purchasers have said that if there are social housing units within the apartment complex they would not be interested in buying there as they would be worried about noise levels and possible trouble, not having any control over whom Portsmouth council could house there. In Pierfront’s defence, they have built a number of social housing units in other areas of the city and have indicated that it would be inappropriate in this development. The council approved the application on the condition that it can review the decision in three years time if the development has not been completed.

Abandoned baby - mother found Police have arrested an under-age girl and charged her with abandoning the newborn baby girl in Torre del Mar on Sunday. A 16-year-old boy found the naked baby, who still had the umbilical cord and part of the placenta attached to her, next to the main doorway of the building where he lived just after 9 am. There was a bag containing clothes next to her. She was taken to hospital where doctors reported she was very hungry but in good shape, given the circumstances. Apparently the baby's mother had tried to keep her pregnancy secret from her parents. She was also taken to hospital after the police located her on Monday, suffering from the effects of a difficult delivery. Several people living near

where the child was found had offered to adopt her but the authorities said that abandoned babies are usually given into foster
care as soon as they can leave hospital. At press time, it was still not known of the baby would be reunited with her mother.

Huelva's Provincial Historical Archive is classifying a collection of 620 photographs portraying the life of the English colony in Huelva during the first 25 years of last century. Most of the Britons living in Huelva at that time were employed by the Rio Tinto Mining Company, which worked what are reputed to be the oldest copper mines in the world. According to myth, these are the fabled mines of King Solomon, and a section of the area is still known as Cerro Salomón today. The mines were inexplicably abandoned after the Roman era and almost forgotten until they were rediscovered in 1556. The Spanish government sold the mines to a British syndicate in 1871. They were sold back to the Spanish government in 1954.
Good news for the Iberian lynx One of the world's most endangered cats, the Iberian lynx, may not be doomed by its tiny population size. Only about 250 are believed to exist in the wild, which puts the species at risk of low genetic diversity and inbreeding, but a new study suggests that the lynx has had little genetic variability over the last 50,000 years, and this has not hampered its long-term survival. The Iberian lynx was once found throughout the Iberian Peninsula, but hunting, habitat destruction and a disease that nearly wiped out its main source of food – rabbits – contributed to a drastic drop in
numbers, which started to plummet in the 1960s, dropping from an estimated 3,000 to approximately 150 in 2005. The lynx is now only found in two isolated pockets in Andalucia. Conservationists have been successful in boosting lynx numbers through captivebreeding programmes and efforts to increase rabbit populations. However, concern about the cats' low genetic diversity led a team of researchers from Spain, the UK and Sweden, to look at the mitochondrial DNA –

a part of the genome that is usually extremely variable – of several lynx, and found that there was, as expected, little genetic variation. However, when they compared this with mitochondrial DNA from lynx fossils spanning the last 50,000 years, they found that there was hardly any variation between the ancient specimens and in the modern-day animals. They said the lynx's consistently low genetic diversity suggested that it had always had a small, long-term population size. They added that the study suggested that a lack of genetic diversity in an endangered species should not hamper conservation efforts. Cemetery offers full moon visits The English Cemetery is offering guided visits to groups of 30 people once a month on the night of the full moon. Visitors will be able to see the graves of writer Gerald Brenan, and Robert Boyd, a Londonderry squire who joined the British Army. His life was cut short in December 11th, 1831, when he was executed on a Malaga beach along with General José Maria de Torrijos and several others who had tried to overthrow King Ferdinand VII – Boyd was 26. These are just two of the famous people buried in Spain's oldest Protestant cemetery, which opened in 1831 and was declared to be of cultural interest by the Junta de Andalucia earlier this year. The president of the Fundación Cementerio Inglés, Bruce McIntyre, said the tour included the most important graves but no ghost stories. It was decided to continue the full moon visits after the cemetery's successful participation in the Cultural White Night events in May. The cemetery is also open for daytime visits.

Police had been called to a children's party where a “very aggressive” man was said to be making a nuisance of himself. know the Pope isn't everybody's cup of tea but I suspect millions of people are grateful to him for changing the mood in the nation's capital. Gone were the constant protests that we had become used to since May 15th when the “indignant ones” took over the Puerta del Sol, to be replaced by over a million mainly young people from countries around the world having the time of their lives – when they weren't praying, They prayed quite a lot but they played quite a lot too – dancing and singing in the streets and not a drop of alcohol in sight. By the end of his four-day visit, Benedict XVI looked so much happier than he had when he arrived.

I saw a gang of them on the telly and they looked like demonstrators for rent, people who enjoy nothing so much as staging pitched battles in the streets just for hell of it.

ut he needn't have worried. There were a couple of clashes on the eve of his arrival and another the following night. But by the second day of the Pope's visit, the “anti” hordes had realised that they were vastly outnumbered and largely made themselves scarce.

here were some ironic moments – like when Zapatero and other members of the government tried to look as if the Pope was their favourite person. After all those years of Churchbashing, it must have been galling for them to see how well the event was going.
A strange fascination with killer bulls
T
hat was the title of an article in El Pais last week in which the author tried to work out why people love killer bulls so much. Apparently, the mighty Ratón is not unique, but is just one of a string of famous killer bulls that the Valencians so love. One of the most famous was, in fact, a cow called Marisol who was alive and literally kicking in the seventies. Her owner admitted to wanting
to send her to knacker's yard when she was young but after trying her in the ring just once, he realised how bad she was. She lasted for all of 14 years. Another bull breeder commented that in the “old days, two or three people would get killed every summer but nobody made a fuss about it”. For the record, the mighty Ratón has only killed three people in the past five years.

nyway, I just thought I’d let those of you who enjoy hearing about bulls killing humans that Ratón is now famous – or infamous – the world over and his owner is in three minds about his future – whether to let him carry on killing in the ring for a few more summers, put him to stud, or clone him. Whatever he does, there'll be Ratón for a while yet.
Those Basques again

he authorities have no-one to blame but themselves. They bent over backwards in the name of “fairness” to allow the pro-independence coalition known as Bildu participate in the regional and local elections in May. I said at the time that this would backfire and it has. Not only are they banning the king's portrait from public buildings, they're now distinguishing between “good” and “bad” ETA victims. The provincial chief of Gipuzkoa, Martín Garitano, said over the weekend that ETA attacks in Catalonia were "more than an error."
"
The Basques should pay special respect to victims in Catalonia," Garitano said. "They took place when the Basques had received a lot from Catalonia." He did not specify what that “lot” was.

n ETA bomb at a Hipercor supermarket in Barcelona in 1987 killed 21 people and a 1991 attack in Vic killed another nine. In 2000, the Socialist Catalan minister Ernest Lluch was assassinated by ETA. The Socialist Party spokesman in the Basque regional parliament, José Antonio Pastor, said during a radio interview that apologising for or lamenting ETA attacks exclusively in Catalonia is the same as justifying them in the rest of the country, adding that “it shows the abertzale (Basque radical left) is not yet sufficiently mature for democracy.” However, even the abertzale is getting worried about Garitano's behaviour – for political not humanitarian reasons, of course. They fear he is single-handedly undoing the two-year process that ended in Bildu's legalisation in May. I say let him get on with it. There's nothing like the stark reality of an unpleasant thug like Garitano to disillusion all those innocents who believe an independent Basque country would be like paradise on earth.

he other day, my partner and I began looking for a new place to live. Our landlady surprisingly decided that she needed to raise the rent from €790 to €865 to help pay for her daughter’s first year at the university. She decided to make her move at a time when other landlords are dropping the rents in Madrid because property values have drastically decreased. When my partner told her that we were not paying the hike, she immediately told us not to worry about it because she wouldn’t be raising it. We have been living in her apartment for six years and have never been late with the rent – she knows this.

he properties are getting cheaper in Madrid, but many are vacant because of price speculation and, of course, owners who just refuse to budge on their price. We will be staying in the apartment we have, but only because it is such a hassle to do that big move.
Dog days

Italy is more corrupt, says TI, which places it 3.9 just slightly ahead of Romania and Bosnia.

And it is very doubtful that the Partido Popular (PP) has it in its heart to come up with a similar law should the opposition win the November 20th elections.

So you can imagine how appalled I was when I saw a small dog inside a car with the windows closed! The owner was nowhere to be found. I assumed – correctly – that the owner had just briefly left his pet and would be returning soon. He finally came back and the poor creature looked exhausted. I feel bad because I should have said something to him but I didn’t. At least the dog was okay. I just cannot understand how people still think that leaving a dog alone inside a hot auto in the middle of summer is not dangerous. And you would think the man would have some sense or education seeing that he was driving an Audi!

Party Lots to do in Free Property Legal with September Review Open Day TOPS The T.O.P.S cabaret group invite you to come and party in the gardens of the president’s house in Alhaurin el Grande on Saturday 27th August at 8.00pm. Homemade food will be served first, followed by a sparkling cabaret with a special section featuring the most popular Abba hits. The rest of the cabaret consists of one or two fun, tongue-in-cheek numbers, and lots of your all-time favourite songs which they defy you not to sing along with. The emphasis is on having a good time in pleasant surroundings with a definite party atmosphere. The evening is being held to raise much-needed funds for S.E.P.E, the local Equine Rescue Charity. From this September Age Concern has arranged a number of events at the Age Concern Drop-InCentre which is situated in Calle Zaragoza 25, Estepona. Starting on Wednesday 7th September, there will be a Social Club with mixed activities from 10.30am to 13.00.
From Thursday 8th September there will be yoga for the older person (fortnightly) and talks on health-related subjects from 11am to mid-day. Starting on Friday 9th September there will be a Craft Club from 10.30am to 1pm that will include quilt making and embroidery on alternate weeks. It starts with quilt making with Julie Wood on Friday 9th September. The following
Friday, the 16th, Alex Aldous will be running an embroidery session, and so on, on alternate weeks. From Tuesday 18th October there will be a creative writing course from 10.30am to 12.30 – this will run for six to eight weeks under the guidance of Vera Ivers. Apart from the yoga, these activities are open to all age groups.

Music dying on the Costa? The saga of the Benalmadena and Fuengirola police and the bars in the area is getting beyond ridiculous. On Saturday evening, live music venue Pógs was told to stop their music because somebody hadn’t closed the double doors properly! Local bar owners last
week established a new group “The Fuengirola Bars Association” that is being overseen by Laurence Pike. The next meeting – to which all bar owners and musicians will be welcome – is to be held at Moo Moo’s bar in Los Boliches on the 7th September at 1pm to discuss where they go from here.
The group will be lobbying for fairness in this regard for all bars so that, if an English bar is playing loud music and gets closed, so should the Spanish bar two doors down which may have been an ongoing problem for years . All bar owners who have live music should attend to stop the rot now.

News Gib facts - did Gibraltar Fair you know...? Week Located at the entrance to the Mediterranean in position latitude – 36°08°N longitude – 05°22°W, Gibraltar forms the eastern shore of a bay that has been of commercial importance from the earliest times. It has been claimed that the port of Tharshish to which the fleets of Solomon resorted was situated here. Certainly Phoenicians recognised the advantages of its protective geographical features: they founded the colony of Melcarthos (Carteia) on the north shore during the 9th century B.C. and made it an entrepôt for trade with many ports throughout the Mediterranean. Gibraltar was possessed by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Visgoths (in that order) but remained uninhabited until the Mohammedan invasion of the Iberian peninsula in 711 A.D. by Tariq-ibn-Zeyad from whom Gibraltar gets its name, Gibel Tariq (Tariq's Mountain) and the city itself was founded by the Almohad monarch, Abd el Mumin in 1160 A.D. The Spaniards finally captured Gibraltar from the Moors in 1462 and retained it until 1704. In that year it was surrendered to an Anglo Dutch force during the war of the Spanish succession, since when it has remained in British hands. The existence of the actual Rock of Gibraltar is first recorded by the Romans, who named it Calpe. It was the belief of ancient writers that the Pillars of Hercules were

Cruise ships in There will be four cruise ships docking into Gibraltar Port between now and the end of August, making a total of 21 ships and the approximate number of passengers almost 45,000 this month. Tomorrow, August 25th the P&O ship Aurora will be in Gib from 13.30 to 6pm going on to Palermo.
On Friday 26th the Finnish Kristina Cruises ship Kristina Katarina will be in from 8am to 7pm going on to Malaga. And on Wednesday 31st the P&O Ventura will dock from 8am to 2pm and the Princess Lines Grand Princess from 9am to 5pm going on to Southampton.

t the weekend I went to see the new movie “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, I was looking forward to this movie, as I remember watching the original 1968 film and being hooked on the story.

One Day By Lone Scherfig starring Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess The David Nicholls bestseller on which this movie is based was a word-of-mouth runaway hit. If you haven't read the book it won't stop you enjoying the movie – but inevitably, as with all well-loved books that make their way to the silver screen, the fans are ready to tear to shreds anything that doesn't ring true. Well, it's likely that most fans of One Day, the novel, are likely to be as charmed as the critics by One Day, the movie. It starts on July 15th, 1958 when Emma Morley
(Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Sturgess,), university graduates, forge a friendship that will last a lifetime as they meet up each July 15th. Emma and Dexter are star-crossed lovers, if Dexter but knew it. The clever rich boy heads like a heat-seeking missile for a shallow media career, and Emma, a strongly principled northern working class lass finds Dexter's lack of moral fibre a bit hard to bear, but each works to maintain their unlikely friendship. The
narrative is told over two decades, focusing on the things that occur in their relationship each July 15th. It's a structure that is enthralling in the book but tricky to pull off in a movie. Scherfig (An Education) has worked with author Nicholls, who produced the screenplay, to produce a bit of magic, resulting in a delightful tale which explores the depth of friendship, and missed opportunities as Em and Dex make their way through life, and discover the true
nature of love. The movie shines a spotlight on fashion, music and hairstyles over the years that will have the generation who lived through those years wincing in amused recognition. First criticisms were that Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) was too pretty and did not master a northern accent well enough to be convincing to play Em. But she has won over the critics so no worries on that score. Word of advice – take a tissue. No, make that two!

or those of you who haven’t seen it, the premise is that a crew of astronauts are awakened from their hibernation and crash land on an unknown planet which appears to be ruled by apes. These are not your average apes you understand, they have evolved into intellectual creatures that have the power of reason, speech and free thinking. The other inhabitants are of a more human form who are lesser developed than the apes, unable to speak or write and are generally less advanced than their ape rulers.

f you are one of the rare breed that never got to see the ape films first time around, I won’t spoil the plot for you but I would recommend that you give them a watch. In my view the original films way outclass the recent incarnation by miles. Starring Charlton Heston, Robert Gunner and Roddy McDowall together with an impressive list of other well known faces, the film was a runaway success and spawned four other sequels between 1968 and 1973.

osting around $5 million dollars to make, the first film was a commercial success, grossing in excess of $32 million dollars. One of the reasons that the film achieved critical acclaim was for the prosthetic make-up used for the actors in the ape roles (no CGI cheating here!!!!! ). Whilst it was an expensive process and took an age to get the actors ready for filming, it was a major reason for the film’s convincing returns at the box office.

he special effects of the ape series of films was mainly due to the brilliance of John Chambers who created the ape make-up which was tested on one of the characters in an earlier TV series called “Lost In Space”.

he four sequels in the ape series failed to match the huge revenue of the first film and they brought home less bacon each time. The story continued as a short lived TV series in the US but achieved greater success for ITV in the UK and received a further outing on Channel 4 in 1994. In the TV series, Roddy McDowall reprised his role but as a different character – this time playing Galen a chimpanzee as opposed to Cornelius (another chimpanzee) in the films.

he TV series was broadly based on the original film script and for the most part achieved its goal to keep the franchise alive. In 1981 some of the episodes were cobbled together to make five movies for television which gained some limited success.

his whole ape thing also had many spin offs including various novels, audio books and comics and was rested until Tim Burton was commissioned for a remake in 2001. Many acclaimed film directors were involved as possibles including James Cameron, Peter Jackson, Oliver Stone and Chris Columbus.

ventually Tim Burton won the day and the remake starring Mark Walberg, and Helena Bonham Carter was well received by the great viewing public – particularly once again for the prosthetic make-up this time created by Rick Baker. This $100 million costed film, produced a massive $360 million gross revenue at the box office but 20th Century Fox decided not to proceed with a sequel, preferring to once again rest the franchise until the most recent release of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”which takes us back to the beginning.
I
loved most of the original stuff but have to say that the most recent outing left me cold. It could have been brilliant but I personally think it relies too much on CGI graphics and a rather weak story.

Check and verify everything. Make sure you give others enough space to shine, instead of micro-managing things. There are some personal desires you have that need to be communicated to another - the key is to figure it out and then learn how to ask for it. Whatever approach you have been using has not been giving you the results that you have been looking for. Perhaps you have swept an issue under the carpet so far that you have forgotten putting it there in the first place. (Serves 2 ) ● 200ml of double cream (or low-fat crème fraiche, if you are counting the calories!) ● Handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped ● ¼ tsp of dried oregano ● ½ tsp of dried basil ● Pinch of dried red chilli flakes (optional) ● Freshly ground black pepper ● 75gms of parmesan shavings
Directions 1. Heat a little olive oil in a large pan or skillet. Add the red onion and garlic and fry for about 2-3 minutes. 2. Prepare the mushrooms. It is important not to remove the stems of the wild mushrooms as herein lies a lot of the flavour. Keep any very small mushrooms whole and roughly slice the larger ones. Add the mushrooms to the pan and gently sauté them for about 4 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, bring a pan of slightly salted water to the boil and cook the pasta for 5-6 minutes or to the packet
instructions. When the pasta is cooked, drain in a colander and keep warm by placing a lid over it. 4. Now add the cream to the mushrooms, followed by the fresh parsley, dried herbs and chilli flakes if using. 5. Mix the pasta in with the mushroom sauce and season with freshlymilled black pepper to taste. 6. Serve into warmed bowls and sprinkle over the parmesan shavings with maybe a separate side salad or garlic bread.

Modified Call to measure ecstasy attacks duration of blood cancers obesity Modified ecstasy may one day be used to fight some blood cancers, according to scientists at Birmingham University. In 2006, the team had shown that ecstasy and anti-depressants such as Prozac had the potential to stop cancers growing, but the problem was that it needed doses so high they would have been fatal if given to people. The researchers, in collaboration with the University of Western Australia, have chemically re-engineered ecstasy by taking some atoms away and putting new ones in their place. One variant increased cancer-fighting effectiveness 100-fold. It means that if 100g of unmodified ecstasy was needed to get the desired effect, only 1g of the modified ecstasy would be needed to have the same effect, and this also reduced the toxic effect on the brain. However, doctors are not going to start prescribing modified ecstasy to cancer patients
in the near future. The research has been demonstrated only in samples in a test tube, and animals studies and clinical trials will have to be carried out before prescribing a drug could be considered. First, however, chemists in the UK and Australia are going to try to tweak the modified ecstasy even further as they think it can be made even more potent. If everything is successful, a drug is still at least a decade away.
Experts say the health hazards of obesity may have been grossly underestimated because estimates have failed to factor in the duration of obesity. A research team at Monash University in Australia said risk calculations have focused on severity of weight gain alone and not how long it persists. They said their study of the health of 5,036 people living in the US who enrolled in a large study– the Framingham Cohort Study – that tracked their
health every two years over decades, suggests every additional decade of being obese more than doubles death risk. They said a new measure is needed – the "obese-year", similar to the "pack-year" used for smoking, to give a further quantification that can be used to help estimate the associated health risks. They warned that obesity is occurring at younger and younger ages so that today's children can expect a shorter life expectancy compared with past generations.

Although it was never our intention to use any of this money for the day-to-day running of the shelter we have been left with no other option. Even though staff, vet and all other overheads have been cut to the bare minimum, there is simply not enough money coming in to enable us to cover our costs. The priority, as always, is for the

Where do Star names come from? Have you ever wondered who named the stars?

any constellations are rooted in old mythologies, for example, the prominent figure of Orion has varying connections in ancient Greece, China, and Babylonia among others. hile the constellations are usually named after people or animals in various myths, the names of the individual stars are more of a mixed bag. The majority are related to their constellation, e.g., the star Deneb literally means ‘tail’ as its location is in that part of Cygnus the Swan. Others describe the star itself, such as Sirius, which translates literally as ‘scorching’ – apt enough for the brightest star in the sky. The bright red-coloured star that forms the eye of Scorpio is called Antares which means Anti-Ares or the rival of Mars. Its vivid redness can often be mistaken for Mars. Then there are a handful that seem completely out of place: the constellation of Lepus the Hare includes a star named Nihal, which means ‘camels quenching their thirst’ – possibly a holdover from a previous and now extinct constellation. uite a few star names are Arabic, in which Al means ‘the’ and often appears in front, e.g., Algol, ‘The Ghoul’. Its inclusion has become somewhat arbitrary over time and several of these names are now given with or without the Al- prefix. Most other names in the western tradition have Greek or Latin origins, while a few are Chinese in origin. o avoid any confusion astronomers usually refer to stars using the Greek alphabet to rank stars that make up each constellation by their relative brightness so Betelgeuse the brightest star in Orion is Alpha Orionis; the next brightest star Rigel is Beta Orionis; Bellatrix is Gamma Orionis and so on down to the faintest star Thabit which has an official designation as Upsilon Orionis. ut regardless of origin, almost all star names are old, hundreds or even thousands of years old, and only about 165 of the brightest stars have names. (IAU). For example just this month a brand new moon has been discovered orbiting around Pluto and now the hunt is on to name it. The IAU was founded in 1919 when a group of professional astronomers with at least a PhD qualification agreed to join together to stabilise what could otherwise have been a confusing mixture of names and standards. There are now over 10,000 members of the IAU from practically every country in the world. It was the IAU that created the official names and boundaries of the 88 constellations that we now recognise. They were also responsible for down grading Pluto from being a planet. They were not however responsible for naming all the planets as these had already been named before the formation of the IAU. It is not possible to apply to join the IAU; you have to be recommended as being a professional astronomer as well as having the necessary qualifications. Only one person has ever joined who is not a professional astronomer and that is Sir Patrick Moore. here are several companies that will sell you the naming of a star and while these might make a romantic gift to someone unfortunately the name exists only on the piece of paper you receive – it has no official recognition as such. I have even heard of craters on the Moon being sold and named but again none of these carry any official weight. The Apollo astronauts who have been to the far side of the Moon have been given the right to name craters after loved ones but as they are all on the far side then none of them are visible from Earth!

Kubica’s recovery still on track The doctors of injured Renault driver Robert Kubica expect the Pole to be fit enough to drive in a Formula 1 simulator by the end of next month. Insiders close to Kubica, who suffered a partially severed hand and multiple fractures in a rally accident in February, have admitted his progress slowed dramatically over the summer months but the mood in his camp is more upbeat as he prepares for his eighth and final operation.

Kia will preview its future K9 flagship sedan in concept form at the upcoming Frankfurt show.The big Kia sedan, as yet unnamed, is said to share its rear-wheel-drive platform with the Hyundai Genesis. Powerful, dynamic and forward-looking, Kia’s new concept car signals the company’s distinctive new design direction. This rearwheel drive four-door sports sedan marries sleek and muscular proportions with a sophisticated and elegant four-seater cockpit. Visitors to the Kia stand in Hall 3.1, booth A21, will
also see the world premiere of the three-door version of the all-new Rio and a facelift version of the Kia Soul. The Frankfurt concept features four-door coupe like styling, much like that of the Audi A7. The Kia concept was designed under the direction of Kia design boss Peter Schreyer, who used to work at Audi. And he had this to say proudly about the project. “No matter from which perspective you look at it –
this concept car is roaring with energy and ready for take-off,” .
“I believe the car is a strong statement from Kia: we are ready to fast forward to an all new chapter.” Media reports in Korea say the production K9 sedan is expected to go on sale in the home market next spring.
Beaulieu’s famous Autojumble Beaulieu’s most famous motoring event, the International Autojumble, takes place on the 10th and 11th September in the grounds of the National Motor Museum, and is the biggest outdoor sale of motoring items this side of the Atlantic. The event that started as a one-day show with 75 stands in 1967 is now in its 45th year and boasts over 2,000 stands. Beaulieu’s Events Manager, Judith Maddox said: “This popular event is going from strength to strength with demand for stand space increasing year on year. Advance ticket sales are also well up on last year.” With stands, groaning with all kinds of vintage and classic motoring ephemera – motoring parts, accessories, automobilia, literature, tools and clothing, there is
something for everyone and lots of bargains to be had.This iconic event enjoys the reputation that; “if you can’t find it at Beaulieu, it doesn’t’ exist!” The traditionally cosmopolitan flavour of the International Autojumble will be much in evidence again this year with both exhibitors and visitors coming from all continents of the world. In the Automart there will be up to 200 cars on offer, from restoration projects to cars in concours condition while the DealerMart will have a selection of classic cars for sale. On Saturday, Bonhams will be holding an auction of collectors’ motor cars and automobilia. Among the star lots going under the hammer is a superb 1904 Cadillac Model B, which has previously been a winner of several concours awards in
the USA, and is estimated to sell for £60,000-£80,000. A very early 1910 Ford Model T Tourer (est. £25,000 – £30,000) a 1925 Bentley 3litre shooting brake with an estimate of £80,000£100,000, and a 1904 Cadillac Model A delivery van (est. £60,000 – £80,000) are also on offer in the sale. Kia to unveil RWD sport sedan at Frankfurt show
A near-series version of the Smart ebike will be on display at the “Eurobike” show in Friedrichshafen (31st August – 3rd September 2011) and at the Frankfurt Motor Show (13th – 25th September 2011). Charles turns up the heat at Torrequebrada Golf ! C.O.G.S Society Day, August 20th After the disappointing cancellation of our originally scheduled day at Rio Real last week, almost two dozen of us headed for the coast and what was, for many, the unchartered waters of Torrequebrada Golf, Benalmadena. On a day when the sun shone brightly and the humidity hit hard we teed off on a course that was in superb condition with surely the best fairways on the coast. The greens were a little slower than we are used to, but were so receptive it became clear that target golf was the best way forward, indeed woe betide any one missing the fairway as the ball could very easily sit down in the rough never to be seen again – a fate which many of us were dealt! As it was the first visit for many of us, the scoring on the day was very mixed,

Terry’s ‘baa 3’ competition was inevitably won by Charles with 10pts, followed closely by Terry himself with 9pts, and Sav third with 8pts. ranging from a meagre 13 pts (G.H) to a massive 41, the highest of this season by our table-topping Charles Randall (hope the five-point handicap cut doesn’t hurt too much!), but congratulations on what must have been a great round. Many thanks are owed to Ian and Russ for arranging the day at such short notice. After a very trying week, we enjoyed what we all considered to be the best course our society has played on in the last five
years. Surely now we must return on an annual basis, cost permitting. Murray wins as Djokovic quits Andy Murray won a seventh Masters title as world number one Novak Djokovic retired from the Cincinnati final with a shoulder injury at 6-4 3-0 down. It was only the second loss of the year for the Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, who has won 57 times in 2011. He received treatment between sets, but conceded defeat to hand Murray the title after netting a limp smash. It was an underwhelming end to a match that had promised to be a more thorough test of Murray's US Open
credentials. The Scot progressed to his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows in 2008, straight after winning his first Masters title against Djokovic in Cincinnati the previous month. Hopes of a similar run for the British number one this year will have been raised by the fates of the three men above him in the world rankings in Ohio. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both lost in the quarter-finals while Djokovic, who looked short of energy throughout the final, seems to be feeling the effects of his outstanding season.
Team Sky bounce back La Liga players strike after talks to win Stage Two Chris Sutton took a resounding victory on the second stage of the Vuelta a España after timing his sprint perfectly into Playas de Orihuela. Sutton moved into position on a tough ramp up to the line before following in the wheel tracks of Vicente Reynes (Omega PharmaLotto) as the duo powered away from the chasing pack. The Australian played it cool with the finish bearing down to pull out from behind the Spaniard to take the biggest win of his career by a clear bike-length – and with it the points’ jersey. With the favourites for the sprint all scrabbling for the final podium spot, a resourceful Sutton made the win look easy as he notched up the team’s second WorldTour success of the day following Edvald Boasson Hagen's victory in Germany an hour earlier. Reynes held on for second place while Marcel Kittel (Skil-Shimano) rounded out the podium places from the bunch after a technical final two kilometres. Touching tribute Afterwards Sutton dedicated his win to Txema González, the Team Sky carer who tragically passed away at the Vuelta 12 months ago. Sutton told us: "The one person I and the whole team really want to dedicate this win to is Txema. He's gone but he's not forgotten.
"He loved this race and I really wish he was here with us. He'll forever be in our thoughts and I'm sure he'll be watching over us." Looking back at the finish of the stage, Sutton was full of praise for his team-mates who had put him in position to win. He said: “For me it’s a dream come true to win a stage at a Grand Tour. The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) is demanding players be allowed to break their contracts if they are not paid for three consecutive months. "Our positions are very far apart," said Professional Football League chairman Jose Luis Astiazara. "We are concentrating now on being able to save the second day."

The German canoeing team were left 'appalled' after organisers at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Hungary played the banned 'Nazi anthem' at a medal ceremony. "I am appalled. We cannot accept it," German national coach Rainer Kiessler said in a television interview.
