RAIN! - National News
Getting back to work
Millions of Spaniards started heading home over the last weekend in August, to get ready for a return to normal life after their long summer vacation. In many areas in the north west of the country, they were accompanied by rain, driven in by a cold front from the Atlantic. The weathermen say the rain will reach most parts of the western half of the country by Thursday and Friday and will be particularly heavy in Extremadura and
Andalucia, gradually spreading over the whole country by Saturday. Both maximum and minimum temperatures will fall steadily over the next few days. The summer passed without any serious incidents on most fronts. Forest fires consumed

WORLD Good news
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
The notting Hill carnival took place over last weekend, the August bank holiday in the uK, and extra police were deployed to watch over the proceedings due to the recent riots and the fact that there has been trouble at the carnival before. However, this year it had one incident of a stabbing reported with a news photographer getting a shot so he should be easy to find. The police and everybody joined in the dancing and all had a jolly good time. That is what carnival is all about! I am still on the diet and losing just a pound a week - it would be nicer to lose more but, as it stands I’m likely to keep it off. And before you think that the choccie queen has cut it all out, I haven’t! This diet means I can still have my naughty bits and enjoy them, and everybody knows that the naughty bits are the best bits! did anybody watch the episode of come dine with me from the costa del Sol last week? Where in God’s name did they find that bloke? You’ll know who I mean if you watched it... the one who found it funny to put a joke cut-off finger in the pasta then was rude to everyone when they didn’t find it funny! He was nasty to everybody and how they stood him, I don’t know. I’m pretty sure I’d have not been able to be in the same house as him after the first day and, to cap it all he thought he was hilariously funny, the perfect host and generally Mr Wonderful. The other chap on the programme was a total gentleman and was polite about him until the end when he said that he had come to the conclusion that the bloke was totally demented. I think he’s possibly hit the nail on the head there! I thought one of the women was going to end up slapping him by day two (she was the winner in the end) and the last lady did well to keep her temper and sense of humour pretty much all the way through. Entertaining, he was not!

Jobless expected to rise Labour minister Valeriano Gómez said on Monday that he expected the unemployment figure for August to rise, breaking a four-month-run of continuous drops. He said he did not expect the number to be higher than it was in August last year – when unemployment rose by just over 61,000. He said the rise was due to “certain company practices” by which contracts were terminated then renewed
as a way of avoiding giving employees a paid holiday. On the other hand, Sr Gomez defended a batch of government measures approved last Friday aimed at bringing down high unemployment by easing restrictions on
temporary work. One of the measures is a U-turn on a policy established in 2006 which barred companies from reemploying workers on new temporary contracts. They can now do so if the employee has been with
the company for 30 months during the previous two years. Spain's unemployment rate currently stands at 21 per cent, the highest in the EU. The youth unemployment rate is 45 per cent, among the
highest in industrialised world.

The trade union described the reforms as "very negative” but Sr Gómez said a "temporary job was better than none at all."

Trial by fire for constitutional reform For the first time in seven years, the ruling Socialist Party and the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, have joined forces to push through a reform of the constitution that would put a cap on future deficits. The debate began in Parliament on Tuesday and at the end of the morning, the vote to include the principle of budget stability in the Constitution was won by 318 in favour, 16 against and 2 abstentions. The final vote on the reform is expected to take place on Friday. The cap would not come into effect until 2020 and will affect all levels of the central and regional governments. The two main parties agreed to the move at the end of a month that saw Spain's
sovereign debt under severe pressure in the markets, amid fears that it might need a bailout similar to those of fellow eurozone nations Portugal, Greece or Ireland. Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy said his party had been demanding such a measure for years. With more than 90% of deputies between them, the two parties will be able to push through the reform before parliament is dissolved on September 27th, ahead of the November 20th general election.
Everyone else against As the parliamentary debated evolved on Tuesday, all the smaller parties – including the Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalist parties were able to give the reasons why they are against the reform. At one point, Socialist candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said to Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero: “I'm going out for a coffee, I'm falling asleep”.
The two main unions – the General Workers Union (UGT) and the Workers Commissions (CC:OO) have called for protest marches throughout the country on September 6th. Police, judges, ecologists and the M-15 youth protest movement have also come out against the reform. Most of the objections are based on the fact that the government has said this constitutional reform need not be submitted to a referendum but can be

Spain to extradite expat's alleged killers A French judge has agreed to a request from the Spanish authorities for the extradition of two 21-year-old men wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Andrew Milroy (pictured)during a fight outside a nightclub in Lloret de Mar last month. The two men were arrested a week later at their homes in the north and south east of France. They admitted to being involved in the fight which they said took place as they were leaving the club, adding that they didn't know the youth had
died. They returned to France the following day. The victim's family had moved to Spain 26 years ago and run a popular restaurant in Lloret del Mar. The resort, which receives an estimated one million tourists a year, has seen an
increase this summer of fights outside the many nightspots along the coast. Earlier this month police used rubber bullets during a stand-off with French and Italian tourists when they refused to disperse after the nightclubs had closed.
Partido Popular spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons has urged wealthy Spaniards to emulate their French counterparts who have voluntarily offered to pay higher taxes to help their government overcome the current recession.
Police warn about highway robbers Police in Barcelona have arrested 11 people involved in an estimated 90 robberies all using the same modus operandi. In a warning distributed on the internet with English subtitles, deputy police inspector Sergi
Martinez said the criminals pick on car with foreign plates and drive alongside it. They then throw a stone at the car, in the hope the driver will to stop to investigate. The thieves' car then pulls over and while one of them distracts the driver, another one sneaks
into the victim's car and grabs what they can before driving off. Sr Martinez said Spaniards “know what these people are up to so we don't stop”, adding “that's why they choose people from abroad". He urged foreigners to ignore the stone-throwing. “If they
Wealthy should follow French example
have to stop because they really think their vehicle is damaged, they have to do it in an area under surveillance," he added. A police helicopter captured the clip of one such incident which was posted on the internet.
Sr Gonzalez Pons said all Spaniards must make a big effort to help get the country back on its economic feet noting that “the middle class and the workers” have being doing this “for a long time”. In an interview with the Europa Press agency, Sr Gonzalez
Pons said “it would be nice” if rich Spaniards followed the example of the 16 biggest property owners in France. However he pointed out that his party's policy is to lower taxes wherever possible because “there is not much money in Spain” and what there was should “preferably be in private hands rather than in the hands of the State”. The Tax Office has recently stepped up pressure on Spaniards who have a lot of money stashed away in Swiss bank accounts.

'Swindling' banks under fire
An Iberian lynx called Grazalema, who was born in captivity in Doñana national park and released into the wild last year, has been found dead inside a box trap meant for foxes on an estate in Castellar de Santiago, Ciudad Real. Regional authorities said the 17-month female had died of exposure. Grazalema was wearing a GPS collar which had ceased to work and technicians from the Life programme in charge of breeding lynxes in Doñana had been trying to locate her through other means. They said her death was doubly tragic because the area where she died is

Ecologists in Action, SEO/BirdLife and WWF – are demanding a freeze on all permits for purposes of predator control. They said Grazalema's death endangers the entire lynx recovery programme, in which the EU has just invested a large amount of money. All three organisations said box traps are the least selective method for killing foxes,
and that other species like lynxes, wildcats and birds of prey are common victims. In a joint statement they said: "It makes no sense to invest large amounts of European and national funds on the recovery of the Iberian lynx, if at the same time we do not correct one of the main causes of its disappearance."
a ministerial order to be published in the Official Gazette in the second week of September is to demand that banks give clearer explanations to customers and stop swindling them with high charges. reasons for the measure include an increase of annual commissions to as much as 34 per cent; complaints from consumers about not being given prior warning; and the severe reprimanding the government received from the European Commission about the opacity and costly operation of the Spanish banking system. No left-wing streets here the decision by the council of this small town of 626 inhabitants in Ciudad real province to re-name seven streets which honour famous left-wingers like Socialist Party founder Pablo Iglesias and Chilean communist poet Pablo Neruda, has raised a few hackles. Partido Popular mayor Juan antonio Callejas has said many residents have been wanting the names of politicians “who arouse phobias”removed for some time but critics maintain the name changes have been caused by the mayor's “phobia about everything left-wing”.

Twitter mocks New York mayor A Twitter feed set up by one New Yorker caricaturing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's efforts to speak Spanish has gone viral, attracting a huge online following. Stay-at-home mum Rachel Figueroa-Levin created El Bloombito to entertain friends stuck indoors while Tropical Storm Irene hit New York. Mayor Bloomberg frequently answers questions at press briefings in broken Spanish. @Elbloombito captured the mood of the hurricane-struck city, with tweets in "Spanglish" on the topic of hurricane
preparations and advice for New York City residents from a fictional mayor called Miguel Bloombito. Highlights include: "Los trainos y el bussos son muy operationo. Go to worko. No excuso!" and "No looto el bodega. Esta es Nuevo Yorko!" New York has a very large Spanish-speaking population and the mayor's earnest effort to learn the language has been seen as
an attempt to positively engage with the Latin community. Ms FigueroaLevin said it's great that he wants to speak Spanish, but the mayor's Spanish is "laughable". Ms Figueroa said “if he really wanted to get a message across to the Latino community he should have stepped aside and had someone who speaks Spanish fluently deliver the message".
Bird flu shows signs of resurgence The UN’s World Health Organization has warned that a mutant strain of avian flu able to sidestep vaccines has appeared in Vietnam and China and its risk to humans cannot be predicted. The virus circulating in Vietnam threatens Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia,
where eight people have died after becoming infected this year. The WHO said bird flu has killed 331 people since 2003. It has also killed or provoked the culling of more than 400 million domestic poultry worldwide and caused an
estimated £12.2 billion of economic damage. The virus had been eliminated from most of the 63 countries infected at its 2006 peak, which saw 4,000 outbreaks across the globe, but remains endemic in Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia and Vietnam.

UK News Polar bear victim speaks of ordeal 16-year-old Patrick Flinders has spoken about the incident in which his friend, Horatio Chapple, 17 – the grandson of a former governor of Gibraltar – was killed by a 250kg polar bear while on an expedition with the British Schools Exploring Society on the Norwegian Island of Svalbard on August 5th this year. Patrick, who is from the island of Jersey, was also attacked by the bear and was badly wounded. He said that he looked up and saw the bear’s huge mouth and nose dripping with blood. At that point, he said, he thought he too was going to die. He lashed out at the bear trying to punch it all through his ordeal “It hit me with its paw and my arm came out of my sleeping bag. Then I felt its teeth around my elbow, biting down to the bone and
suddenly it had my head in its mouth and I heard my skull crack and a deafening roar from the bear because it was so close.” He said that the first he knew of the attack was a scratching sound on the side of the tent before it suddenly collapsed. He said he pulled the fabric of his sleeping bag over his head and curled into a ball. He added that he wanted to hide but there was simply nowhere to run to – then the bear came towards them. He said that Scott BennellSmith must have decided to run off because the bear suddenly dropped him and went after his friend. “Then I heard one shot,” he said. Patrick refused to accept he was a hero after punching the animal to scare it away. "I'm not a hero," he said. "I punched the polar bear because I was fighting for my life, not

because I wanted to fight it.” The bear had been shot by one of the team leaders, Michael Read, 29, but only after his rifle had failed to fire four times. Speaking about his friend's death, Patrick, who needed 20 staples in his head and had part of the bear’s teeth embedded in his skull, said: "Horatio had been lying one side of me, Scott on the other. If I had slept where he was I would be dead. I feel guilty it was him and not me." A post mortem on the bear showed that it had been suffering from severe toothache.
Double tragedy Four children with ages ranging from 16 to just nineyears-old have been left orphaned after both their parents died in separate incidents on holiday in the Essaouira area on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Mathilde Lamb, known as Tilly, and her husband Roger from Persham, near Pershore in Worcestershire both died after falling from different buildings. According to their 16-year-old son, Tilly had been leaning over their balcony after someone had started knocking loudly on the door of the ground floor. He said that there was an awning below the balcony of the apartment and Mrs Lamb leaned further out to try and tell them to leave. At some point she leant too far out and simply fell over. There have been rumours that there had been an argument but this has been fiercly denied by Mrs Lamb’s brother–in-law, who said that the family had actually been talking about relocating to New Zealand. Roger Lamb fell from a separate building a few days later. Mrs Lamb's body will be repatriated to Wiltshire, where some of her family come from but it is not yet known to where her husband’s body will be sent. The exact circumstances of their deaths, however, are still unknown and enquiries are ongoing.

What were they thinking of? Two security officers have been sacked after attaching a criminal’s electronic tag to his false leg, meaning that all he had to do to break his curfew rules was to switch to another leg. 29-year-old Christopher Lowcock had been convicted of drink driving and was placed under curfew but the security officers didn’t notice that his bandaged leg was a false one when attaching the device. It came to light when Lowcock was back inside prison on a similar charge and his tag wasn’t with him! CAMBRIdge
Just another chunk According to research coming out of Cambridge University, chocolate could reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. After analysing the results of seven different studies, researchers came up with the astounding facts that eating chocolate just once a week could reduce by 37% your risk of developing heart disease and by 29% your risk of having a stroke because of the high antioxident and anti-inflammatory properties that lower blood pressure and also reduce the risk of diabetes. The team have said that manufacturers should reduce the fat content of their brands of chocolate to maximise the benefits but problems at the moment from obesity could still outweigh the benefits.
Seagull-proof Google chairman rubbish sacks lashes education Weymouth and Portland District councils have been fighting a losing battle against seagulls along some of its streets in the south of England. Residents have said that the amount of rubbish and seagull poo is disgusting and the council has received many complaints. The streets are too narrow for the residents to be given wheelie-bins and the seagulls have been pulling apart rubbish bags before bin men can come along and pick them up - resulting in almost all the bags’ contents being strewn all over the streets each week. However, Weymouth and Portland DC do not ignore the people who ultimately pay their wages and now the council

Old women to be kept out of sight? Tv presenter and broadcaster Nick Ross said after being questioned at the edinburgh TV Festival that there should be no place on TV for ugly, older women. He said that TV presenters should accept the fact that they get the job based on their looks adding: “I’ve never worked with a minger!” Miriam O'Reilly, 53, who won an age discrimination case against the BBC earlier this year after being axed from Countryfile, was also part of the debate. But Ross did not sympathise and said women on screen should be young and attractive, and older women should not be allowed to stay on TV in the same way men can. Ross was axed from his anchorman job on “Crimewatch” after 23 years. Maybe he was just too old and ugly? HeALTH
Megrahi close to death Abdel Basset al Megrahi, better known as the Lockerbie bomber, is reported to have been in and out of a coma since the troubles in Libya according to his son, Khaled al Megrahi. He said that his father is being cared for at his mother’s house and in hospital by his mother and sister. They also said that they have been trying to get his cancer relieving drugs but the chemists has been broken into and the drugs have been stolen. According to the terms of his release from Scotland nearly three years ago - on humanitarian grounds because a doctor had said that he would be dead from the cancer within three months - Megrahi was supposed to contact Renfrewshire council on a regular basis, usually by telephone or video linkup. He also has to inform the council of any change of address but his son is insisting that all phone lines are out of order.
The executive chairman of the internet giant Google, Dr Eric Schmidt, has lashed out at the UK’s education system for teaching children how to look things up on the internet but practically nothing more than that. At the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival he said that he was “flabbergasted” that the curriculum does not have IT and computer sciences as a standard subject and that the lack of such teaching was “throwing away your great computing heritage”.

Car dealers are looking forward to the projected upturn in sales for the month of September. If the analysts are correct, low interest rates coupled with discounts and incentives to buy cars - especially some of those manufactured abroad - should show a bumper month. The new Range Rover evoque is expected to add to the upturn in sales and the company are looking at plans for a new plant to build the cars in the West Midlands with £2 billion worth of orders and 1,500 British jobs being created for the area.
have invested in heavy cloth black bags for people to put their regular plastic rubbish sacks inside. This seems to have beaten the seagulls for the time being! 150 million tons of rubbish is generated in the UK every year with much of it ending up in landfill sites. The government has charged a tax of £56 per tonne that is put into these sites since 1996 and believe that recycling in the UK should be in the region of 50% of all waste. Weymouth and Portland actually have the least refuse going into landfill of anywhere else in the UK. No doubt the seagulls will move somewhere else for their dinner in future!
Stabbing Police are appealing for help to identify a man seen running from the scene of a stabbing during the Notting Hill Carnival. The man, who appears to be holding a knife, can be seen fleeing the scene in shots taken by a photographer sent to cover the event. A member of the public can be seen trying to trip the man as he leaves the scene in Ladbroke Grove. Police say the 20year-old suffered stab wounds to his abdomen and hand. He is being treated in hospital in central London where he is said to be in a serious but stable condition. Three men aged 20 and one aged 21 have been arrested in connection with the incident. Despite the stabbing, Scotland Yard said this year's carnival was "very peaceful." A record 6,500 officers were deployed to police the second day of the event, which saw a total of 214 arrests over the two days, fewer than the 2010 event. The carnival had been subject to an earlier finishing time of 7pm to reduce the risk of trouble following the riots which affected the capital.
“If I may be so impolite, your track record isn't great. The UK is home to so many media-related inventions. You invented photography, TV and computers in both concept and practice. You need to return to the Victorian ideal of bringing back together science and art”. He also said that the UK needed to end the split between ‘luvvies and boffins’. Dr Schmidt is the first non-broadcaster to give this landmark lecture dedicated to the memory of actor and producer James MacTaggart.

People splash out as drought fears fade Two minors The high levels in the province's reservoirs has had the negative effect of dimming people's memories of the last drought.
This August they forgot all the good water saving habits they had acquired over the previous five years which left the reservoirs down by 25 cubic hectometres, the third biggest drop in a decade. The Conde de Guadalhorce reservoir, which supplies the provincial capital, has registered the biggest, followed by the La Concepcion reservoir, which supplies most of the
Costa del Sol. The authorities had hoped that the economic situation and the Junta de Andalucia's new water tax would
encourage people to watch their water bills but it looks as if only an exceptionally dry rainy season will achieve that.

arrested for murder The National Police have arrested two minors – one Spanish one Moroccan – in connection with the murder of Algeciras businessman Agustin Vecin, 66, whose body was found gagged and tied to a bed at his home early on Sunday morning. A Bolivian minor and his sister were detained when police caught them
joyriding in the businessman' car before his body was found. They were released without charges. The businessman did not answer repeated calls from the police to advise him that his stolen car had been recovered. The police then decided to visit his home, where they discovered his body.
Hoping to be invisible The Guardia Civil have reported that an increasing number of illegal migrants are attempting to cross the Strait of Gibraltar on inflatable rafts in the belief that the radars belonging to the Integral External Vigilance System (SIVE) cannot detect the rubber crafts. A Guardia spokesman said it was nothing new – 50 migrants had been intercepted on inflatable rafts in 2009 and 2010. However, 104 migrants on 22 rafts have been caught so far this year. The spokesman said the 3-
metre-long rafts and a pair of plastic oars cost between €20 and €50 at supermarkets in Tangier or Tetuan but the people trafficking mafias charge between €2,000 and €6,000 per person. The spokesman said the fragility of the rafts was almost “insulting, especially as the SIVE radars can detect the slightest movement of a dolphin”. He said children can be seen playing with similar rafts on any Spanish beach in the summer and that the lives of people who use them to cross the Strait “are hanging by a thread”.

Malaga leads dignified death requests Since the living will register was established in Spain seven years ago, 5,652 people in Malaga province have given instructions that they want a dignified death – the highest number in Andalucia. Huelva is at the other end of the scale, where only 805 people have made a living will. The total for Andalucia as a whole stood at 21,312 when the last count was made in May this year. A spokesman for Malaga's provincial health department said the high number could probably be explained by the fact that Malaga has the highest number of residents from other EU countries, where living wills have been legal for many years.

More young people playing poker The president of the Malaga Association of Gamblers in Rehabilitation (Amalajer) said that an increasing number of minors are becoming addicted to gambling because of a “network of associations practising the game of poker illegally, as well as the appearance of a poker school online”. Francisco Abad said the peñas (clubs) and underground associations in which there are no controls are deliberately looking for young people with a skill for poker so that they can be developed into professional gamblers. He said that in many cases the parents were not at all “bothered by the fact that their sons are playing with huge amounts of money given to them by older people so that they can play in illegal games and run the risk of falling into the clutches of the mafia”. Sr Abad said Amalajer was not against poker per se but the way it was being used and called for more information for young people to encourage them to play in totally legal clubs.

In the two months since the town of Júzcar in the Ronda Serrania was painted blue to promote the latest Smurfs film, an average of 800 people have been visiting it every weekend. War declared on chewing gum The town council has begun a campaign to make people aware of the cost of scraping up chewing gum from the streets, as well as how unpleasant it is to have to scrape the stuff off one's shoes. Councillor Manuel Muñoz said it takes street cleaners eight times longer to clean up the gum, using costly machinery. Sr Muñoz warned offenders faced fines of up to €3,000. “We're a tourist town and have to take care of our image,” he said. MALAGA
Crack down on street flower vendors The local police have increased their persecution of flower vendors who pester tourists off the cruise boats around the port area. This year, 255 have been warned and 68 of them were taken to court for being repeat offenders. First offenders are fined €167 but repeat offenders face fines of up to €900. A police spokesman said the higher fines are beginning to give results. The vendors distract people while their accomplices try to lift purses, wallets, mobile phones and cameras. MALAGA
Councils owe banks €1,200 million As of December 31st, 2010, 81 of the province's 101 municipalities owe the banks more than €1,200 million, of which €728 million (60 per cent) is owed by Malaga city council, according to Finance Ministry figures. The remaining 20 debt-free municipalities are nearly all small towns in the interior, like Atajate, Cartajima, Salares, Júzcar or Yunquera. Malaga capital is the fifth city most heavily in debt, after Madrid (€7,008 million), Barcelona (€1,102 million), Valencia (€885 million ) and Zaragoza (€790 million).

LÍNEA DIRECTA THE BEST COMPANY FOR EXPATRIATES AT THE BEST PRICE Since 1998 Línea Directa, the market leader in the sale of direct car, motorbike and home insurance in Spain, has offered an exclusive telephone service entirely in English and German. This service, the first of its kind in Spain, forms part of the company’s commitment to quality and excellence, which has also made it the market leader in this business sector, due to the fact that it currently has over 63,000 foreign customers residing in Spain. As a result, services such as purchasing a policy, making enquiries, processing claims, sending documents and 24-hour assistance can all be carried out in English or German at a time which is convenient for the customer by making just one phone call. And not only does Línea Directa offer the best, it also offers its services at the most competitive price on the market. It does this in two ways:
- Price personalisation: behind each quote there is a sales professional who, via a quick questionnaire, will search for the best product and conditions to suit the customer’s personal requirements and will assess him or her according to their individual circumstances. - Maximum competitiveness: still at the best price, this month Línea Directa is making Expats an exclusive 12x11 offer, which allows them to enjoy one year of insurance for the price of 11 months. And what is more, if the person requesting this offer already has another car insurance policy with Línea Directa, then the offer will be 12x10, which is to say two months’ free cover.
This is the result of a strategy which is permanently geared towards offering customers the very best quality at the very best price.

o, I haven't got it wrong- I mean Thank God It's September.
ournalists hate August because there's so little hard news – the real players in any country, the politicians, are on holiday and even where they are not, as in Spain this year, all they can do is talk about boring financial matters. The real news on that front is that for the first time in seven years, the Socialists have appealed to the Partido Popular for support for their economic reforms. The irony here is that most of these “Socialist” reforms have been proposed by the PP over the years, and fallen on very deaf ears.
T
o disguise the fact that it has few ideas of its own, the Socialist government has spent the past seven years criticising the PP for not contributing ideas, undermining all government efforts and measures, and so on and so forth ad nauseum. Zapatero even went as far as calling Mariano Rajoy a traitor in the run-up to the last election for daring to say that there was an economic crisis. (Three months after the March 2008 election he finally admitted there was one.) And the Loony Left have never lost an opportunity to associate the PP with the worst of the Franco regime so you can imagine who is very upset by this new cosy relationship between the two parties. I've said it before and I'll say it again – the true enemies of Spain are the Loony Left, still fighting a war that ended more than 72 years ago, and keeping alive a dictator who died nearly 36 years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if they haven't realised that the USSR no longer exists and that the Berlin Wall is no longer standing. Beam them up, Scotty, and release them in the stratosphere!
T
he main event to look forward to now is the November 20th general election. One newspaper reported on Monday that the Socialists will only get 117 seats – they have 169 now. If that turns out to be the case, then it will be the worst Socialist election result ever. I almost feel sorry for Socialist candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba but I suspect that when he accepted the nomination he knew he was facing certain defeat. He had already said on several occasions that he thought it was time to leave politics and his decision to run may have been a magnanimous gesture to save other younger Socialist hopefuls from a crushing defeat that would probably destroy their political careers.
Long-awaited dialogue everything was rosy – and in a way they can only blame themselves because they were being told what they wanted to hear. The truth, when it finally hit them, was devastating, and then they had to sit back and watch Zapatero floundering around, grasping at any straw, in an effort to restore confidence in the economy and get the country working again. But it all happened at least three years too late. If Zapatero had acted decisively back in 2008 – although he should have really started to act in 2007 – he might have been able to avoid or at least alleviate the worst effects of an economic crisis which started in the United States. Instead of acting decisively then, all the Western world's leaders pussyfooted around, afraid to take on the bankers, terrified of the harsh measures that were needed. So Zapatero can take comfort in the fact that he is not alone. But the tragedy here is that he inherited a strong economy from José María Aznar and if he'd looked after it more carefully – instead of indulging in his ideological reforms – we wouldn't be laughing all the way to the bank but we wouldn't be tearing our hair out in despair, as most people are today.

T
his column has landed me into a lot of hot water over the years but it has also brought me much satisfaction. I remember being somewhat bemused when the U3A asked me to give a series of talks on the Spanish Civil War, which then expanded into a discussion group about the war and its consequences and next term will go under the more grandiose title of Modern Spanish History, to take in the Transition and more recent political developments. One of the most gratifying experiences I've ever had is to hear someone say that my efforts have helped them to understand it all a bit better. I've also met some really nice people, several of whom have become friends, not just strangers passing in the night. U3A needs more people who are willing to pass on their skills and knowledge and I hope some of you will answer the call. See page 10 for more details.
T
he labour unions are gearing up for a series of demonstrations against the amendment; they want it to be put to a referendum. But is the Spanish public really interested in going to the polls to vote on such a mundane measure? Or are voters on the whole really familiar with the intricacies of public spending?
T
o appease opponents as well as those who are still in doubt, the two parties agreed not to include a cap figure in the amendment that could forever restrict government spending in the future. Prime Minister José Rodríguez Zapatero and PP leader Mariano Rajoy instead agreed to separate organic laws that would include figures and would be introduced in different periods to reflect the current health of the economy. Germany ’s constitution already includes a deficit cap amendment while France and Italy are also discussing plans to introduce similar laws.
D
espite the noise being made by the unions and the regional premiers, the agreement hammered out by the government and opposition is a welcome gesture. It is refreshing to see Zapatero and Rajoy at last sitting down together to come up with a viable plan that would rein in lavish spending and help Spain in the years to come.
T
I
only hope that Rubalcaba is intelligent enough to realise that a Zapatero-style dirty campaign will lose rather than win votes. Spaniards are becoming increasingly unhappy with their politicians, and I'm not referring to members of the M-15 youth protest movement. They were led to believe that
F
inally we are seeing some intense cooperation between the Socialists and the Partido Popular (PP) that is not being welcomed by the labour unions and many other politicians across Spain. The two major parties last week struck a deal over an unprecedented plan to introduce a constitutional amendment that would put limits on public spending. The move is designed to calm the markets and show investors that there is a serious sense of responsibility in government to whip Spain ’s finances back into shape. However, not everyone is happy with the plan. Some Socialists believe that putting a legal cap would jeopardise social spending in the future. Across the regions, government leaders are worried because they will no longer be able to engage in runaway spending as they have done in the past, charging their debts to the central government.
U3A walking group
he unions know that social spending will never be curtailed by any detrimental amount that could affect those who mostly rely on government assistance – the sick, elderly, handicapped, single parents and unemployed. They also know that there are alternatives that can be found in seeking ways of increasing social spending that are being done in other countries but have not been generally employed in Spain. One is to encourage big companies like Repsol or Iberdrola to introduce more corporate social
responsibility programmes not just aimed at protecting the environment but also in helping people with their day-today needs.
T
he major focus at this stage is the two parties’ willingness to work together to find solutions to help the Spanish economy in the future. As former Prime Minister Felipe González put it in an El País column on Tuesday, it was the first and only time the PP has come up with an offering to help solve the financial crisis. Spaniards have long complained about the bickering, political tension, and unwillingness by the country’s major forces to agree on an emergency set of rules. Now that they have come together, many don’t like what they are hearing. It is becoming apparent that there are way too many voices out there which have no interest in wanting the Socialists and PP to initiate any type of dialogue. Those are the real enemies of Spain .
Catalonia is the key
A
ccording to US diplomats, if Mariano Rajoy wants to win the general elections, he must first improve his party’s standing in the north east region of Catalonia where the PP is seen as anti-Catalan. This assessment is contained in newly released Wikileaks cable written in 2009 by diplomats at the US Consulate in Barcelona. The missive was sent soon after the PP held their national convention in Barcelona with the aim of “improving” the party’s image in Catalonia . “With recent polls showing PP support in Catalonia at 11%, many voters see the PP as anti-Catalan, and are suspicious that the party aims to weaken Catalonia's long fought struggle for autonomy,” reads the cable that was posted on the Wikileaks website last Friday. The PP held their convention in preparation for the May 22nd local and regional elections in which they gained ground in many Catalan municipalities. “In order to help Rajoy become president of Spain in 2012, the PP must increase its representation in Catalonia ,” reads the cable, which was written 20 months before Prime Minister Zapatero set a November 20th early elections date. Once again, the Catalans seem to call the shots on the national scene.

Two weeks ago we looked at the word "HAY" meaning there is or there are. If you put que together with hay – Hay que translates as one has to or you have to or it is necessary to Hay que estudiar para aprender You have to study to learn or it is necessary to study to learn Hay que esperar un momento You have to wait a moment or it is necessary to wait a moment Hay que tener paciencia You have to be patient or one has to be patient Hay que comer para vivir y no vivir para comer You have to eat to live and not live to eat. To change There is/There are to There will be you can use Habrá Habrá lluvia mañana - There will be rain tomorrow Habrá más turistas el año que viene - There will be more tourists next year. Habrá un terremoto el 25 de septiembre - There will be an earthquake on the 25th of September And, in the same way, you can add que to habrá to talk about something that should happen in the future. Habrá que pagar más impuestos - You will have to pay more taxes/ more taxes will have to be paid Habrá que decirselo - You'll have to tell him / He will have to be told Habrá que trabajar más - You will have to work more/ People will have to work more Habrá que comprar más cemento - You'll have to buy more cement / More cement has to be bought. In two weeks time we will look at how Hay, there is and there are and Habrá there will be are used in the past tense. Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie. Upgrading your computer Deciding whether to upgrade or buy a new computer can be a daunting task. So where do you start? The components inside a computer are interconnected and changing one item may not achieve the desired result. If you have a slow processor (CPU) then it is likely that the rest of your machine will be equally slow, insufficient memory (RAM) has a big impact on performance. On the other hand having plenty of memory with a slow CPU will not make much difference. Your hard drive is in essence a filing cabinet if it is full then files take longer to find. If your drive is fragmented - files are split into small parts and are not logically organised then speed is also affected. The graphics capability plays its part as well, especially if you are an avid gamer or use software that requires plenty of video memory. So the solution may not be so simple and you may need to upgrade several items. However, there are things you can do before making the big jump and purchasing a new computer. We recommend
you start by running some benchmarking software that tests and rates all the individual components. Have a look at Novabench (available as a free download from www.novabench.com). You can compare the results on-line with other users to see how well your computer is performing. Once you’ve run these tests you can then pinpoint possible shortcomings. You may find that your computer is physically capable of a lot more and does not need any hardware upgrades, but rather just some tweaking or a re-installation of Windows. If you feel you need advice, do not hesitate to contact us, we are happy to help and point you in the
right direction or provide you with the solutions you require. If you do decide to purchase a new computer keep in mind that the quality of the components can make a huge difference to performance. Electronbox & PC Doctor have successfully operated since 2000 and with over 15,000 clients, are one of the biggest I T companies on the Coast. A recent fundraising evening, organised by T.O.P.S., proved to be a huge success and raised much needed funds for S.E.P.E., the local horse & donkey sanctuary based near Lauro Golf in Alhaurin de la Torre. The event was held in the gardens of the president's house and attracted an audience of 180 people. After a two course meal, the show opened with the "ABBA" girls and was followed by a good variety of songs from
various artists, including Status Quo, Barbra Striesand, The Village People (in full dress!), Michael Bublé, and Blondie to name but a few. The audience really got into the spirit of the evening and this resulted in a great atmosphere throughout the entire night. A raffle helped to boost the funds even further.
The singers are now busy rehearsing for the T.O.P.S. "Christmas Hits" show which is to be held in December.
Ho! Ho! Ho! in August! Taking the burn out of this summer’s heat, Age Care Association celebrated an evening of Christmas cheer, food and entertainment recently on the Paseo Maritimo in Los Boliches. Clients, volunteers and friends all joined in with Christmas songs, cava, Christmas crackers and Christmas pudding to cool down and enjoy an entertaining evening out.
The La Cala de Mijas Lions Choir provided music and group participation. Santa and Mrs. Claus “wannabes” were sighted in festive dress and generous prizes were awarded to the raffle winners. A generous three course Christmas dinner including all the traditional trimmings indulged the taste buds of the displacedin-time guests.
Ho, ho, ho - the Christmas spirit lives on all year round at Age Care!

With its special terms of EU membership, Gibraltar provides an extensive selection of products and services that meet the requirements of both local and international investors. As a modern, vibrant, low tax jurisdiction, it likewise has first-rate professional infrastructure that is fully compliant with European standards of regulation. The numerous international trading entities and financial services companies, which already have a base in Gibraltar, are testament to this. The economy has often been described as one that is ‘running on all cylinders’. Its main economic growth attributers include general trade, the provision of financial services and communications (including e-gaming), tourism and maritime activities. • The Finance Centre – Banks, trusts, insurance and reinsurance companies, high quality ancillary services such as accountancy and legal practices as well as
communications and information technology providers have all made Gibraltar the first-class international business hub that it is today. • Tourism – Every year millions of visitors come to Gibraltar by air, land and sea. • E-Gaming & Maritime Services – Two vibrant factors of the economy that have brought prosperity to Gibraltar. Vessel bunkering for instance remains a longstanding and prominent sector. The prosperous economic performance of this unique European jurisdiction has been reflected in ways that benefit the whole community. These include greater recurrent public spending on essential public provisions such as health, education and social services. The Government attributes Gibraltar’s successful development to its pursuit and implementation of policies that create and sustain a stable environment that promotes increased levels of business activity and investor confidence.

Students benefit Every year local company Gibtelecom offers around thirty places to local students studying scientific or technical courses over the summer break for work experience. This is the ninth year that the company has run the scheme and around 250 students to date have benefitted from the scheme which also provides work placements for those students who have to work in their chosen field for a year as a practical side of their course. The company, in
partnership with the Gibraltar Government, also run an apprenticeship scheme for local young people to learn the telecoms trade, resulting in an NVQ qualification which will be presented at the end of September. The students report that they have been very happy with the scheme saying that the company goes out of its way to show them that what they have learnt at university works in practice and help them in any way they can to move forward into a rewarding career.

Marbella Film festival is proud to announce the launch of its annual 24 hour film challenge, as part of the 2011 festival. The event which is organised by Marbella International Film Festival, in association with New World Trust and with the support of “The Marbella Film Office”, offers a great opportunity for filmmakers to add to their credits and demonstrate their talent to world audiences. In the past years The Marbella 24 hour film challenge has attracted many talented filmmakers, who created some outstanding work, scripted, shot, edited, and submitted
for screening in only 24 hours. This year the Festival is aiming to increase the participation in this exciting event, by offering a subsidised package for accommodation and accreditations to the festival, attracting film makers from all over the world, to make movies, and show off their talent. How it works: The filmmaker with cast and crew, (or just alone, with a camera and laptop!) is challenged to make a threeto four-minute short film on a given subject matter. The task is to write a script, direct the actors, shoot the film, edit, sound and music, and
deliver the film in 24 hours. All films will be screened and judged as part of Marbella International Film Festival, and the best film will receive the prestigious Marbella 24 hour film challenge 2011 Award. The runners up will receive a certificate of recognition and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. Over the years many participants of the Marbella 24 hour film challenge have discovered this event to be a helpful platform in promoting their future work with the challenge being a fast and effective way of adding to their credits, creating a show reel for their
actors, crew and the production team. The participants have succeeded in achieving international recognition from their association with this prestigious film festival and offers the opportunity of networking with some the most talented international filmmakers in the most glamorous resort of Puerto Banus in Marbella, enjoying a long weekend of films, fun, parties and much more. Please register for this event as soon as possible. Registration forms and further information are available from; info@marbellafilmfestival. com

Taming the Barbarian?
MoViES to WAtcH out FoR
Cowboys and Aliens By Jon Favreau, starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford It's 1875, in the desert of New Mexico, when a man wakes in a canyon with no memory, and a strange metal band on his wrist. Off he totters, into the dusty town of Absolution, where he discovers strangers are not welcome, and the town is ruled by iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). There the stranger (Craig) discovers he is in fact Jake Lonergan and there ain't no way he is going to be popular with Dolarhyde. He's an outlaw on the run,
and has stolen the Colonel's gold. So, the scene is all set for a gun-slinging showdown, just like the ones John Wayne and Gary Cooper used to fight. But, hang on minute – what's that in the sky? The town comes under attack from alien spacecraft and the bug-eyed aliens make off with a few of the townsfolk, including Dolarhyde's son. So that's the cue for the gimlet-eyed Colonel and Lonergan to

put their differences to one side and pull together a rescue team à la the Magnificent Seven, which heads off to rescue the abductees and in the process save the town. Daniel Craig gets to practise his icy James Bond stare and take out a few bad guys, and Harrison Ford thoroughly enjoys himself as the hard man who discovers he may have a soft centre. It sounds completely bonkers but Favreau just
about manages to pull off this weird cross-genre mix. Craig has been waiting for the green light for the next Bond movie so had a bit of spare time, and has said that for him it was a combination of his two favourites – the traditional cowboy, and the sci-fi adventure. No way will this film win any awards, but it will pass a happy couple of hours, and is remarkable for one thing – Favreau has resisted the lures of 3D.

hen it comes to Conans, the only one for me is Conan O’Brien – but when it comes to movie Conans, it’s got to be Schwarzenegger. Even though ol’ Arnie isn’t a great actor, you’ve got to admit he excels in lending his presence to movies that afford him minimum dialogue, like “Terminator” for example. However, Marcus Nispel may not agree. Nispel – famous for the remake of “Friday the 13th” and the 2003 “Texas Chainsaw Massacre – has now decided that “Conan the Barbarian” needs a facelift. onan, based on the work of Robert E. Howard, took a long time to make it on to the silver screen and the original movie captures the spirit of Conan, as portrayed in the stories. The epic tale is of Conan a Cimmerian child sold into slavery and growing into a man who seeks revenge against the warlord who massacred his tribe. Conan has lived a harsh existence, yet endures. He has been everything from a barbarian, to a swashbuckler, to a soldier, to a thief, to a general and eventually to even king. He is considered a barbarian by all the people he meets, including those considered to be "civilised". Conan plays by his own rules and morals (and so it would appear does Arnie).
pull it off as well as he could have and still kept the role in the way it was meant to be. Conan does not say much, but when he does you better listen because it is important! The rest of the cast does a brilliant job to support the story, especially James Earl Jones.
T
hat said, can Jason Momoa do a better job? Nispel’s remakes are good, but are never quite the same story you grew up watching. “Friday the 13th” was good – but the story was not the original. So, will this new “Conan the Barbarian” measure up to such high standards? No disrespect to Jason Momoa, but I’ve never heard of him and then we’ve got Rose McGowen (not a good sign) and Ron Perlman (really only known for “Hellboy”) – I’ve got to say, I think this movie is on thin ice, but I suppose only time will tell.
T
here can only be one Conan – no, sorry that was Highlander, well you know what I mean!
T
his movie is multi-layered, on one level there is the action, then a philosophical layer and some wonderful cinematography, very appropriately accompanied by dark, serious, foreboding music. Schwarzenegger is cast perfectly in the role of Conan. I don't think anyone else would have been able to

You have so much energy, Aries, but nothing seems to be gelling. It may feel like you are being pulled in many different directions this week without knowing when to put your foot down or which route to follow. Something or someone is pulling at your heart strings and trying to get your attention – by the weekend your heart will unleash this passion and your creativity will be at an all time high. Be where you are and all will heat up soon. There could be more delays on the horizon and the need to exercise patience is vital. Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better. Something you long for seems to be blocked, you can almost touch it but there is still a missing ingredient that you need to make that wall come down. A reprieve is on its way, enabling things to move in a smoother fashion and by the end of the week with Jupiter’s support to Venus – a payoff is coming. If someone has control over the comfort of your livelihood now is the time you are in a position to fight for it. Look at all sides of the situation and at all who are involved - be strong, be deliberate but not too forceful. The week could start out stressful and then lead to a resolved issue – as long as you do not lose your temper. The planets are volatile and the warrior is easily invoked in just about anyone. If you sort out your personal resources you will sort out your stress. When laughter is in the air it is amazing how energetic you feel but when worries and seriousness take over your thoughts – how quickly you feel tired and lacking in zest. No other sign has the ability to change their health so dramatically according to their thoughts than you, Cancer. You respond instantly to the right words. So set those unwanted feelings free, instead of over-thinking take action and step by step you will work your way out of the worry. You are probably questioning just about everything this week as you are looking for all your hunches to be confirmed. Do not worry – something, somewhere is about to tell you that you are on track and the foundation that you have been building is steadily becoming more supportive and strong. You could find that you want to spend more time with your family and take the time out to get to know someone a little more intimately. There is a lot of comfort found in looking at your roots. It is nice to see, Virgo, that your faith in yourself is higher and your heart more settled. Things are going to work out well for you and at last you can believe that yourself. The more time you spend worrying about what you can’t control in your life, the more unsettled and unstable your footing becomes. We all know you like to put others before yourself but this week it is time for you, so pamper yourself, Virgo, and enjoy basking in positivity.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
This is a very easy “bung it in” dish that can, if you have a slow cooker, be doing its own thing while you’re at work. Personally, if I was oven cooking, I wouldn’t leave the house with the oven on but it is a dish that you can leave to get on with cooking itself and you’re not slaving over a hot stove. Just right for this time of year when it seems to be cooling down a bit and we’re all sick to death of salads!
Chinese ginger pork Ingredients: ● ½ kilo boneless pork shoulder, cubed ● 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger root ● 2 small packets chicken flavoured Chinese noodles ● 1 chicken stock cube ● 240ml water ● 225gr sugar snap peas (you can usually get these in Iceland or Morrisons) ● 3 green onions, chopped
(Serves 4) ● 1 tablespoon soy sauce ● 2 teaspoons cornflour
Directions 1. Place the pork and ginger into a slow cooker, and sprinkle the chicken stock cube over them. 2. Pour in the water. Cover, and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours. Alternatively you can pop a casserole in the oven on 150ºC for the same amount of time if you don’t have a slow cooker. 3. About 10 minutes before you are ready to eat, turn the slow cooker up to High
(oven up to 200ºC). 4. Break the noodle bundles into quarters, and place them into the pot along with the sugar snap peas and green onions. 5. In a small cup, stir together the soy sauce and cornflour. Stir into the pot. Cover, and cook for about 5 more minutes. Serve immediately.

Something may not be perfect but what is perfection? There are realisations, big ones, occurring now, bubbling up and making their way to the surface. Some routes are being closed to you, leaving you no choice but to follow through in one area even though you consider it to be far more challenging than the other pathways. By the end of this you will be pleasantly surprised rd September 23 at how you were able to deal with this issue – you must be getting tougher. nd October 22

A bit of social relief is needed, Scorpio, as the pressure and tension you have been feeling needs shaking off. The tension in the heavens has been resonating with you and with Mars at odds with Saturn, the feeling of gravity could have been weighing you down and feeding your fear base. So enough worry and work. Something you have been trying to finalise and get organised slots into place by the weekend.
SAGITTARIUS Over-reactions, dramas and uncontrollable emotions play their part this week. The small and usually insignificant can appear bold and blazing, as if magnified by ten. Although it may be hard, try to keep things in perspective and try not to fear the worst. By early next week it will all settle down and decisions will be easier to make when you have a greater feeling of control nd November 22 December 21st and balance in all areas of your life. Impulsive buying is quite high – that’s ok if you can afford it.
CAPRICORN All appears up in the air – as soon as you try to lay down some kind of security, it could seem as if it starts to slip away. You could be experiencing your own kind of earthquake where the land just doesn’t seem to stay still long enough so that you can settle. Are you having doubts? Has someone sown a seed that has created a wedge between you and your self-confidence? Where has all the optimism gone? Someone from the past may re-enter your life and remind you of days gone by, they may refresh your memory and you will start to re-build bridges. You could find yourself daydreaming or lack concentration and focus – make sure that any commitments are sorted out first.
Improvements to your diet and your overall health may need an overhaul – pay attention to make sure that you are eating enough or getting the nutrients you need. Decorating or home improvements are also on the agenda, it is a week of getting things finished. All those jobs that were started at the beginning of the year are finally getting some attention. The decks are being cleared, emotional hurdles are being jumped as you move steadily towards having some light-hearted fun.

Sir Tom pulls out The much-anticipated final show in Monte Carlo by Tom Jones was stopped due to ill health Following his Marbella concert last week, singer Sir Tom Jones had to pull out of his Monte Carlo gig, which would have been the last of his three-month tour, suffering from severe dehydration. The event was to be part of the Monte Carlo’s Sporting Summer Festival where Tom’s concert was to have been held in the sumptuous Salle
des Etoiles. He was taken to the Princess Grace Hospital casualty department for treatment but was in a stable condition although he was told by doctors that he could not go ahead with the show. In a statement on his website, the Welsh singer expressed "deep regrets" and apologised to fans. "Sir Tom was ordered by
doctors not to perform in Monte Carlo yesterday evening due to severe dehydration," the statement read. "This was extremely disappointing for Tom, the band and all connected with the tour. This was the last date of a very successful three-month tour, where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat.”
Rod Stewart is a Grandad Describing the arrival of his first grandchild – the daughter of Kimberly's exboyfriend Benicio del Toro – as one of the "happiest days of his life", Rod said in a statement: "My joy is indescribable."
Despite only becoming a father for the eighth time himself in February when wife Penny gave birth to the couple's second son Aiden, Rod admitted he has been anticipating the arrival of grandchildren for some
time. He said: "I'm going to be a grandfather, I've been waiting for that for so long – that and getting my bus pass – the two things I was looking forward to getting."

People normally have a cell phone, they have email, they have computers, they have a TV. And I don't have any of them. In these times that's considered barbaric to a civilised world." Jason, 32, added: "I guess if I had a home entertainment system that was like a screening room it might be different but I love going to theatres. It's a communal thing and you go there with like-minded people to see something which you love. "I get my popcorn and my hot tamales and I love it when the lights go down and I watch the previews. Since moving to Spain 15 years ago, I have almost doubled my weight - yes, you heard right... doubled! and something had to be done about it. The problem is, I was always a skinny mini until I hit 50 then I started to put on a few pounds, then a few more and so. My husband had the same problem! I rarely eat what is termed as “junk food” and exercise? Forget it, I find gyms bore the knickers off me though a lot of my friends get a real buzz from them. But I walk my dogs so I’m not totally without exercise.

Lilly Nelson I noted with interest last week a letter from one of the animal charities saying that they needed money. There are quite a few animal charities operating all along the coast and it is utterly beyond my comprehension how people can just dump a cat, dog or whatever that has been a part of their family for years. It is of course very true that some people simply can’t stay in Spain any more because of a total lack of funds
El Sexmo but, to leave something behind that is a living thing and has loved you unreservedly - how can they do it? I applaud all the charities that are taking on so much at this difficult time and urge everybody who still has a little bit to spare to dig deep into their pockets and give them anything you can. If you don’t want to, or can’t give them money, I’m sure they’d be glad of food and bedding for these poor creatures. A lot of people are believers in
Brian James Turner Having seen the riots on TV, I have a few suggestions regarding helping the youth of tomorrow - if the politicians have the BALLS to address the problem! Youths aged 1620yrs. (both female and male) who are not in education or employment, would be required by law to serve for four years along the lines of National Service. However, this would not be a voluntary service as the prime minister has suggested. Is this idea from him just another knee-jerk reaction from politicians? How on earth can they come up with an idea like that only a week after the riots? This would have to have a very great deal of thought gone into it, and once again their idea has
the theory of “what goes around, comes around” so, as my grandma used to say “give a little, gain a lot!” She explained that if you give help to someone or something in need, yes, you are giving but, what you get back in terms of the gratefulness shown on a person’s, dog’s or cat’s face is worth millions in satisfaction. So, what we all need to do is pull together and give whatever we can, I’m sure it’ll be appreciated.

not been thought through. My idea would have to be run on the lines of the military discipline, so do-gooders MUST be kept as far away as possible. A wage would be paid, uniform issued, this would give the individual pride in him/herself and also pride in the organisation (whatever it's called). Education and training, would be high on the agenda. Sports would of course play a very large part of their training and from this who knows what future champions would be out there? Also sport could maybe reduce the obesity problem that is plaguing the youth of today. Participating in sport would teach them how to use their energy for a better
purpose than roaming the streets, drug taking and so on and so forth. All sorts of trades could be taught i.e. bricklaying, plumbing, hairdressing, painting etc. Another very useful task that could be performed by the 18/20 year olds, is possibly to resurrect the old Civil Defence Corps. Just think of how very useful that would be in many, many circumstances. (Why on earth was this organisation ever disbanded?) At the end of their service there would be a ready-made group of male/females, if they so decided, to join the armed forces, police, ambulance service etc. Throughout their service a certain level must be obtained before one could move on. In this way a good standard should be reached when finishing their service. Upon their return to society they would stand a much better chance of procuring employment. They would be self disciplined and well trained, able to take a confident place in society. And maybe we should take more heed to the old saying SPARE THE ROD and SPOIL THE CHILD.

See e Space Station! It seems like ages since I gave an update on the International Space Station, but unfortunately it’s not good news!
C
onstruction of the ISS is now fully finished, the last module was delivered by the final Space Shuttle mission last month. It has taken 10 years and an estimated $100-$160 billion to complete. It has been continually manned with up to seven astronauts at a time living and working on board. But now there is the real possibility that it may have to be abandoned and the crew head for the ‘lifeboats’.
S
ince the demise of the Space Shuttle fleet, all equipment and crews have to be shipped to the ISS by Russian Soyuz Spacecraft, but last week an unmanned supply ship carrying 15 tons of food, water and other essential equipment crashed shortly after take off from a Siberian launch station. If another spaceship cannot be ready by October then there is no alternative than to abandon ship.
T
he current crew of six can move into two Soyuz rescue capsules that are permanently attached to the ISS for use in an emergency to return the crew to Earth. I’ll bet that the staff at NASA must be sitting with a rather smug ‘I told you so’ expression on their faces right now.
T
he ISS is huge, it is 170 ft long, 360 ft wide and 66 ft in height, that makes it bigger than a football field. It weighs over 400 tons and travels around the world every 90 minutes at 17,000 mph at an altitude of 180 miles. Life is much more civilised than the early space flights with a healthy diet of canned and frozen foods, with even some vegetables being grown on board. All water though is recycled from toilets, sinks and even condensation that collects inside the station. The astronauts try not to think too hard about exactly what it is they are drinking! Each astronaut has his or her own accommodation which is about the size of a telephone box and contains a sleeping bag which is fastened to the wall to stop them floating around in the zero gravity. To answer the question that everyone asks, the toilet is similar to those on Earth but with a
slight suction that draws solid waste into a container to be returned to Earth while liquids are recycled.
T
he ISS does not feature a shower. Instead, crew members wash using a water jet and wet wipes, with soap dispensed from a toothpaste tube-like container. Crews are also provided with rinseless shampoo and edible toothpaste to save water.
B
ecause it is so huge it can easily be seen from Earth with the naked eye. But as it has no lights of its own it can only be seen during a ‘golden hour’ about an hour before sunrise or after sunset when the sky is dark enough but enough sunlight is still shining onto the station to light it up. And as it is travelling so quickly it only takes about five minutes to cross from horizon to horizon. Its orbit around the Earth also makes it visible in blocks of several times during a week and then nothing for several weeks.
T
his week it will be visible on a number of evenings. Tomorrow (Thursday 1st) it will appear in the Northwest at 21.41, it will then travel across the northern part of the sky before disappearing into the east. But for a really good view of it wait until Saturday 3rd when it will again appear in the northwest, this time at 21.23 and will then pass directly overhead southern Spain setting toward the south east at 21.29. It will look like a very bright star moving quickly across the sky, it is now brighter than anything else in the sky except the Moon. If you do get to see it then don’t forget to give the astronauts a big wave as they pass by.

Vettel leads home the Red Bulls at Spa Sebastian Vettel was back on the top step of the podium for the first time since Valencia in June, after a spirited drive saw him lead Red Bull Racing to a 1-2 result in the Belgian Grand Prix. Vettel, who has 259 points to Webber's 167 after his 17th career win, had started from pole position with serious concerns about the durability and safety of his car's blistering Pirelli tyres. The German had to overcome persistent problems with the softer of the two Pirelli tyre options on offer at Spa-Francorchamps, with doubts emerging even before the race, as teams in the top ten sought the replacement of blistered rubber they were required to run. Permission was not forthcoming, and Red Bull, in particular, were left to take the grid with considerable uncertainty over the longevity of its tyres. Both

Bulls
had
ahead of compatriot Adrian Sutil for Force India and Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa in eighth.
suffered heavy tyre degradation in qualifying and the team had considered making pre-race changes and starting both drivers from the pit lane before taking a calculated risk to go ahead as planned. In the end though the problem proved manageable. McLaren's Jenson Button drove another great race to
edge out Fernando Alonso for the last podium place while team mate Lewis Hamilton, last year's winner at Spa, crashed heavily at Les Combes on the 13th of 44 laps while challenging for fourth place. Hamilton was unhurt, and later admitted he had been at fault, but the incident brought out the safety car while debris was cleared and the fencing mended.
Seven-times champion Michael Schumacher, the sport's most successful racer, celebrated the 20th anniversary of his Formula One debut at Spa with a fighting fifth place after starting in last position on the grid. Schumacher, whose car had shed a wheel in qualifying, declared it "a wonderful ending to a wonderful weekend." Nico Rosberg was sixth,
Webber once again had trouble on the grid, wrestling with the anti-stall device as others roared past, but he did manage to miss the early mayhem triggered by Brazilian Bruno Senna on his Renault debut. Senna, called up as a replacement for dropped German Nick Heidfeld, had qualified a very impressive seventh but picked up a drive-through penalty for causing the 1st corner collision, and ended up 13th. While Webber didn’t get his first win of the season, he did make one of the standout moves of the race
by overtaking Alonso through the sweep of Eau Rouge with the two cars almost touching at 300kph. "Well, you don't have much time to get the calculator out at that point, mate," Webber grinned when asked whether it was a calculated move. "I think most of the race I was still charged with frustration from the start. "It's more rewarding when you can do it with someone like Fernando because he's a world class driver and he knows when enough is enough. Obviously my attitude might have been a bit different with someone else." Champions Red Bull now have 426 points to McLaren's 295 and Ferrari's 231 in the constructors' standings.
US pin-up Switches to Nascar racing
Helped by a nightmare opening lap for Ben Spies, Casey Stoner cruised to his 30th MotoGP victory at the Indy Grand Prix. Stoner, who had never previously finished on the podium at Indy, won his seventh race of the season by 4.828sec from Pedrosa. The Repsol Honda star dropped from pole to third on lap one – behind team-mate Dani Pedrosa and title rival Jorge Lorenzo – but that was nothing compared with the first-lap misery for Spies. The only rider that had looked capable of seriously challenging Stoner, Spies dropped from second to fifth
off the line, was shuffled further back through the opening turns, then clipped the back of Dovizioso – leaving him ninth at the end of the lap. Spies had fought his way up to fourth by the halfway stage, then passed team-mate Lorenzo for third at the start of lap 18, when he was the fastest rider on track. Gresini Honda's Marco Simoncelli likewise slipped from fifth in the early stages to twelfth at the flag, while
fellow Italian Valentino Rossi had a strange race. The seven-time world champion – who had qualified just 14th after a crash in qualifying – ran tenth in the early stages, was then passed by Hector Barbera, and looked on the verge of retirement as he dropped to last place. But the Italian recovered to claim tenth at the chequered flag, in a race where only satellite Ducati riders Barbera, Karel Abraham and Loris Capirossi failed to finish.

Shocks galore at World Athletics Finals
Bjorn wins after five man playoff England's Mark Foster blew the chance to win the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles as Denmark's Thomas Bjorn won an epic five-way play-off. Foster was one ahead on the 18th tee but finished with a bogey six to finish 11 under
par. That put him in a playoff alongside Bjorn, Spain's Pablo Larrazabal, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger and South African George Coetzee. And Bjorn won the title on the fifth play-off hole.Wiesberger drove into a bush on the first extra hole and took a bogey six to
fall out of the running before Foster had a second chance to win, but left another 20-footer short. Larrazabal fell out on the second hole of the play-off with a bogey six after his chip for birdie hit the hole and he missed from under five feet. That left Bjorn, Coetzee and Foster to fight it out for the title. Bjorn said: "I think when you set out in a play-off with five guys you're almost a little bit too relaxed because it takes a lot for it to go your way. But as we got rid of one at a time all of a sudden it became very hard. But the way I played the last three play-off holes, I can't be more proud."
Spanish team decided for International Golf Final in South Africa The team to represent Spain in the international final of the World Golfers’ Championship (WGC) in South Africa has been decided after two days of intense competition at Spain’s largest golf complex, La Cala Resort. Over 130 players contested the national decider after winning preliminary qualifiers held in more than 10 courses throughout Spain, in which over 1000 players competed.

The national finals of the WGC were also held in La Cala Resort last year and the Spanish team finished second in the international final, held in Thailand. The President of the Golf Federation of Andalucía, Ángel de la Riva, says the

competition is becoming more popular every year. Twenty teams competed in the international final last year and this year there will be over forty.” The winner of the 0-5.4 category, Juan Antonio Ruiz Batana, was retaining the title that he won last year. This time around he had to
go to a sudden death playoff with Alvaro Hernandez Ruiz from Madrid. The Benalmádena resident said: “Last year in Thailand was a fantastic experience. The event was superbly organised and I’m delighted to have qualified again. I’ve never been to South Africa but I hear the courses we will be playing are all excellent.” The winner of the 5.510.4 category, Pedro Batista, previously worked at La Cala and he put his local knowledge to good effect. He was loud in his praise of the condition of the courses played. “Congratulations to all the green-keeping staff. The condition of the courses is excellent and the greens are very fast and true. The courses played long and with a strong wind scoring was difficult, so I’m delighted to have won my category and the opportunity to represent Spain at the international finals.” Also present at the prizegiving were the players who represented Spain last year. Speaking on their behalf, Carlos Ruiz Castilla said the experience was unforgettable and it afforded amateur players the opportunity to be treated like professionals.
Britain's Mo Farah just missed out in a cruel finish to his 10,000m bid for gold, as he was overhauled by Ethiopia's Ibrahim Jeilan just metres from the line. A brave run saw Mo Farah become the first Briton to win a world medal at 10,000m. But it had looked like being gold and not silver as the 28-year-old stormed to the front with less than two laps remaining of a thrilling 25lap race. Farah told BBC Radio 5 Live: "At the end I just didn't have anything left. It's agony. You always want the gold." Farah, the fastest man in the world over 10,000m this year, kept pace with the leaders throughout and looked comfortable as he kicked for home with around 600 metres left. But Jeilan slowly clawed back Farah's healthy advantage and overtook the Briton as they entered the home straight to win in a time of 27 minutes 13.81 seconds, with Farah just 0.26secs behind. Jeilan's fellow Ethiopian Imane Merga claimed the bronze but Kenenisa Bekele, winner of the last four 10,000m titles, dropped out with 10 laps still to go. Three-time Olympic champion Bekele had been sidelined since January
2010 through injury and never looked likely to challenge for a medal. Farah, who has made huge improvements since moving with his family to Oregon at the start of the year to be coached by Alberto Salazar, could not hide his disappointment. "You give it 110% and it's not enough sometimes. "I thought I'd got it right but it wasn't enough. I'll have a chat with my coach, analyse it and see what happened. It's nice to win a medal but I am disappointed with silver."
Shock for Usain Bolt
There was also disappointment, and shock for 100 metre record holder Usain Bolt as he was dumped out of the 100 metres for false starting. His countryman Johan Blake took gold. Blake clocked 9.92 seconds to lead home American Walter Dix (10.08) and 2003 world champion Kim Collins (10.09).
Dix, a double Olympic bronze medallist, added: "I didn't really think they were going to kick him out. How can you kick Usain out of the race?" The 35-year-old Collins, meanwhile, questioned the validity of the false-start rule after picking up his third World Championships bronze medal. "I don't think it is right. These things happen but you have to give people a chance," said the St Kitts and Nevis athlete. The 100m in Daegu had already been deprived of the three previous fastest men this year – Bolt's team-mates Asafa Powell and Steve Mullings and American Tyson Gay. Britain's Dwain Chambers was disqualified for a false-start in the semifinals, one day after compatriot Christine Ohuruogu was eliminated from the 400m for the same infringement. Previously, athletes had been allowed one false start before being disqualified for a second, but new rules were introduced by governing body the IAAF for the start of the 2010 season.

Negredo punishes Team Sky’s Chris Froome Malaga - twice leads the Vuelta a España Lack-lustre Malaga fail to perform Sevilla 2 - 1 Malaga With around 1000 Malaguenos in Sevilla, you could feel the expectation of the supporters. Sevilla, knocked out of the Europa Cup in midweek by Hannover, had something to prove and so it turned out.
Danger man Negredo
As early as the second minute, Sevilla took the lead. Jesus Navas fired in a perfect cross for Negredo who was unmarked, to head home, a disastrous start for the

visitors. Malaga were being overrun as the players looked slow and ill at ease on the ball. Negredo had the Sanchez Pizjun in raptures, bad defending again led to a second goal for Sevilla with Perotti putting the ball through to Negredo who swept the ball past Caballero low into the bottom right corner. In the second half Malaga made two changes, a disappointing Apono and Rondon taken off to be replaced by Maresca and Seba, but they made little impact. Negedo missed a sitter for his hat-trick and Caballero denied him again with a great save. On 81 minutes Carzola struck a fantastic freekick to give hope for Malaga but Sevilla were not to be denied an impressive win.
The Kenyan-born Briton finished second on the stage behind Tony Martin (HTCHighroad) in the 47 kilometres time trial around Salamanca and it was good enough to see him vault up from 14th to top of the overall standings. He leads by 12 seconds from Jakob Fuglsang (Leopard Trek), with Team Sky team-mate Bradley Wiggins third on the day and up to third overall, 20 seconds behind Froome. Wiggins and Froome had put themselves in contention with superb rides the day before when they finished fourth and fifth respectively on the climb to La Covatilla, taking time out of most of their general classification rivals. And all eyes were then on Wiggins 24 hours later when he went fastest at the first intermediate time check after 13.3km, one second

ahead of Martin who had earlier gone on to set the target time of 55 minutes and 54 seconds. However Wiggins was 19 seconds behind Martin at the second check and in the third phase of the route it was Froome, who had started four minutes ahead of Wiggins, who suddenly came to the fore. Froome crossed the line just 59 seconds behind Martin in second place and when Wiggins arrived at the finish he was a further 23 seconds back.
None of the late starters threatened those three at the top of the day's standings and it all led to a huge shakeup on the GC. Fuglsang splits the Team Sky duo while defending champion Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) is 31 seconds back in fourth. But the likes of Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha), who had started the day just one second off the lead, dropped right down the standings after finishing more than five minutes back. Silver for Jessica Ennis Jessica Ennis took silver after failing to overhaul Tatyana Chernova's 133point lead in the 800m in the defence of her world heptathlon title. Ennis needed to finish at least nine seconds clear of the Russian in the final event to take gold. Despite leading for most the race and setting a personal best, Ennis finished less than a second ahead of her rival.
Ennis had led the competition before throwing a disappointing 39.95m in the penultimate event – the javelin. "I came here to win gold.

It started off poorly and I got it together but unfortunately the javelin was a big disaster," she told Channel 4. "If I had to do it anywhere, it's here because it's next year where I want the gold. "I knew it would be very, very difficult. I was being realistic, but I had to give it everything and leave everything on the track and that's what I did. The javelin let me down. I'll go away and work really hard at it and come back stronger next year." With 6,751 points, Ennis actually scored 20 more than when she won the title in Berlin two years ago.

England are ready Mike Tindall admitted the pain of England's failed Grand Slam attempt in March inspired them to victory on their return to Dublin. "You don't need any motivation coming over here," Tindall said after their 20-9 World Cup warm-up victory. "But when you have something that hurts in the back of your mind, you use every tool you can lay your hands on”. Tindall, who was named man-of-thematch after a superb all-round display, conceded that victory was a "massive" lift two weeks before they face Argentina in their World Cup opener.

Robson, 17, had edged a tight first set on a tie-break and led 76 (7-4) 1-0 after 61 minutes of play. Another British teenager Heather Watson gave former champion Maria Sharapova an almighty scare before the Russian prevailed on day one of the US Open. Watson, 19, led 6-3 5-5 at one stage but eventually went down 3-6 7-5 6-3 in a dramatic match at Flushing Meadows.

Contador gets new date for doping hearing Alberto Contador's doping hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport has been set for 21st-24th November. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and world cycling's governing body UCI are appealing against the Spanish Cycling Federation's decision to acquit him. The hearing will consider Contador's positive test for clenbuterol after the 2010 Tour de France. The Spanish rider won that race by 39 seconds, ahead of Andy Schleck. Contador faces a possible two-year ban and losing his Tour de France victory if the Lausanne-based court finds against him.
