RADICAL TERRORIST CELLS - National and UK News

Spain, UK arrest Islamic terrorists The Guardia Civil arrested two people in the Basque Country and three in Navarre in the early hours of Tuesday morning and charged them with sending money to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb to finance the terrorist activities of a radical Islamic cell. All the men are Algerian and have links with other groups in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Interior Ministry identified the men as Mohamed Talbi, Hakim Anniche, Mounir Aoudache, Abdelghaffour Bensaoula and Ahmed Benchohra,

aged between 36 and 49. The Guardia searched homes and premises linked to the men in Pamplona and Berriozar, in Navarre, and in Irun and Legorreta in Guipuzcos province, seizing computers and documents. CONTINueD ON PAge 2

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Sniff!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

So it’s that time of year again! I picked up some friends from the airport the weekend before last and, as they were somewhat delayed, spent two hours sitting waiting and somehow, within that time I managed to pick up the first of this year’s colds. My eyes ran as much as my nose and, trust me, last weekend I was definitely nOT a pretty sight. Still, for those of you that are suffering now, it only lasted three rather nasty days so it’s not as bad as last year’s three monthly horror! Anyway, that aside, we spent a fabulous weekend (Friday and Saturday night) at The Tamisa Golf Hotel on the Mijas golf course road. We had a brilliant room that was quiet and our balcony overlooked both the hotel pool and terraces and the golf course. The staff were all friendly and helpful and we had dinner and breakfast in the hotel so it was a really relaxing, peaceful weekend. They also have an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym for the more energetic. On the Friday afternoon we drove into Fuengirola for a wander along the seafront but, unfortunately it rained so the only thing to do was to sit and have a cup of tea and, as the weather was bad, I have to admit I had a hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream as well! I didn’t stint on my breakfasts or dinners either but have found that I weighed the same this morning as I did before I went! On the Saturday, still feeling lousy but wanting to get out in the air, we had a lovely walk along the “prom” then went along to the Great British Weekend at the Myramar centre for their tea dance where we had to dance for sandwiches and chocolate eclairs - amazing what I’ll do in public for a free cake!! but it was all good fun that louise from i-candi had arranged. And on Sunday we went for a look round the zoo as we have yearly passes before going back to Tamisa and checking out. A great weekend and I can thoroughly recommend a stay at the Tamisa Golf Hotel!

Spain, UK arrest Islamic terrorists The operation was coordinated by a National Court judge and involved more than 150 Guardia from different units, including the cyberterrorism unit and explosives experts. A spokesman said the investigation continues and further arrests and seizures are expected.

Suicide bombers charged Meanwhile, in Birmingham, six men arrested last week were

charged on Monday with terrorism offences, including a suspected suicide bombing campaign. Four of the men were charged with preparing for an act of terrorism in the UK, and two with failing to disclose information. The six, all from Birmingham and aged between 25 and 32, appeared at West London Magistrates' Court on Monday. Irfan Nasser, 30, of Sparkhill, and Irfan Khalid, 26, of Balsall Heath, are accused of preparing for an act of

terrorism, including travelling to Pakistan for training in terrorism, making a martyrdom video and planning a bombing campaign. Ashik Ali, 26, of Balsall Heath, is accused of preparing for an act of terrorism, which involved planning a bombing campaign, providing premises for the planning of a terrorist attack and stating an intention to be a suicide bomber. Rahin Ahmed, 25, of Moseley, is accused of helping fund terrorist acts. Mohammed Rizwan, 32, of Ward End, and Bahader Ali, 28, of Sparkbrook, are

both charged with failing to disclose information about potential acts of terrorism. Mr Ali is also charged with providing money for the purposes of terrorism. The offences are alleged to have taken place between Christmas Day

2010 and 19th September this year. A seventh man from Birmingham, aged 20, who was arrested on Thursday, is still being questioned. The police have until 29th September to charge, release or apply for further time.

ETA inmates want end to violence

Gynaecologists attacked

Two former ETA prisoners representing more than 700 ETA members still in jail said last Saturday that they all supported the so-called Gernika accord, which calls for the definitive end to violence on the part of the Basque terrorist organisation.

The Patient Defenders association has written to Health minister Leire Pajin requesting her to take measures against the Spanish Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (SEGO) for publishing cartoons “which deride and offend all the women treated by this collective”. In one of the cartoons, a doctor has just performed a Caesarian and is holding the baby in his arms. “It's a boy,” he tells the mother, “but if you prefer a

Their declaration placed further pressure on the organisation to disband definitively. Police estimate that arrests carried out by

Spanish and French security forces in recent years have left ETA with as few as 50 active members, while 90 per cent of the group's membership are in jail. The prisoners recently called for an across-theboard amnesty and immediate releases from jail. Reactions to both declarations were mixed. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero said on Monday that support for the Gernika accord was "a

girl I can fix that right away.” In another, three women – one of them a prostitute – are talking about how often they see their gynaecologists for smear tests. “Every three years,” the prostitute says. “How strange, mine calls me in for one every three months”. In the letter, the president of SEGO, Carmen Flores, said “the cartoons are shameless and evil” and urges the minister to punish those responsible “who dare to call themselves doctors”.

PM dissolves Parliament Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero signed the decree on Monday that dissolved Parliament and called for elections on November 20th. The Council of Ministers signed the decree-law before Sr Zapatero went to La Zarzuela Palace to inform King Juan Carlos officially. The actual election campaign starts at midnight on November 4th and ends at midnight on November 18th.

Voter numbers This year, 35,701,969 people will be eligible to vote, almost 630,000 more than in the last general

election in March 2008. The number includes 1,463,473 foreigners who are eligible to vote under reciprocal agreements between their countries and Spain. Madrid is the province with the most voters, nearly 4.5 million followed by Barcelona with just under two million; Valencia with 1.8 million, Sevilla with nearly 1.5 million, Alicante with just under 1.2 million and Malaga, with just over one million. Soria is the

province with the smallest number of voters, 121,089, followed by Teruel, with 108,532, and Segovia, with 121,089. The autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla have 58,286 and 50,527 voters respectively.

December takeover Before closing Monday's session, Speaker José Bono announced that the Parliament elected on November 20th will hold its first session on Tuesday, December 13th, when he

will hand over to the new Speaker. Several observers have called the date “ominous” – Tuesday the 13th is unlucky in Spain – and wondered whether the outgoing government could have chosen it deliberately.

Likely winner Opposition candidate Mariano Rajoy is still tipped to win the election, but anything could happen in the next seven and a half weeks.

Severance pay MPs and members of the Upper House will receive a single severance payment of €8,200 and those who are not standing in the election, or lose if they do stand, will receive €2,800 a month for a limited time.

Censorship attempt at RTVE The administrative board of state broadcaster RTVE did a quick U-turn last week following the outcry caused by a controversial proposal that would have allowed its members to pre-censor television and radio newscasts before they are aired.

Canary Island on volcano alert The green, yellow and red volcanic activity lights which warn the population of the small Canary Island of El Hierro have been on yellow since Saturday after a series of tremors was felt, the strongest being 3.4 on the Richter scale. The yellow alert is the first one in the recent history of the island, which is the smallest and farthest south east of the Spanish Atlantic archipelago. The security department of El Hierro has admitted that more than 7,500 tremors have been registered since mid-July and a team of scientists from the National Geographic Institute are meeting local residents to keep them informed. Security chief Maria del Carmen Morales has asked the island's population of nearly 10,900 to remain calm but warned that they may have to be evacuated if the scientists decide an eruption is imminent.

The proposal, presented by the PP-appointed board member Rosario López Miralles, was accepted last Wednesday with support from the board's Catalan nationalist CiU bloc representative. The Socialist, Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and Workers Commissions (CCOO) members abstained while only the United Left (IU) and the

UGT union members voted against. The plan was rescinded on Friday after politicians and journalists charged that the board wanted to govern editorial policy. CCOO union representative Hector Maravall resigned after it became known he had abstained in Wednesday's vote. He was the only board member to do so.

Following a tense meeting with Televisión Española (TVE) general manager Santiago González, TVE news director Fran Llorente, Radio Nacional Española (RNE) director Benigno Moreno and an official representing the chairwoman of the TVE news council Yolanda Sobero – who was away on a trip – the other board members issued a statement saying it had

never been their intention to vote in favour of the measure “nor was it the intention of those who abstained to demonstrate that they were tacitly approving it indirectly. We never intended to interfere with the work of professional journalists, let alone try to place restrictions on their professional independence."

Court dismisses ETA-tipoff charges In an unexpected decision last week, the High Court decided to dismiss the indictments against two former top police officials and an agent charged with tipping off the Basque terrorist group ETA about an investigation because of a lack of evidence. The court's criminal division said that while it believed there was

circumstantial evidence that a crime had been committed, it was not enough to sustain the indictments handed down in July against former police chief Víctor García Hidalgo, former Basque police chief Enrique Pamiés, and officer José María Ballesteros for alleged cooperation with ETA. The Partido Popular said the decision had been

made to let Socialist candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba off the hook in the lead-up to the November general election. The PP insists that when he was Interior minister, Sr Rubalcaba, was privy to the tipoff that someone gave to a group of ETA extortionists in 2006, including José María

Elosua – the owner of the Faisán Bar and a gobetween in ETA's extortion racket – about an imminent police raid. Sr Rubalcaba was never called to testify. His campaign manager Elena Valenciano said the PP should apologise for all the "slander and false accusations" thrown at Sr Rubalcaba in recent years.

Another Barcelona native, Serafin Marin, had the honour of killing the last bull on Catalan soil. The regional parliament voted last year for the bullfighting ban, which takes effect on January 1st, on the grounds that bullfighting is barbaric. Opponents plan to challenge the ban in the Supreme Court in Madrid. They argue that it has nothing to do with animal welfare, noting that other bull-related cruelties, such as the “correbous”, where a bull with flaming torches attached to its horns is chased through the streets,

have not been banned. Tickets for the 18,000 seats at La Monumental bull ring sold out within hours last week, with many going on the black market for more than ten times their face value. Posters advertising the event became a collector’s item and the limited edition prints, commissioned especially from Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo, quickly disappeared from hoardings right across Barcelona. Such large crowds have

been rare at La Monumental bullring and most others around the country for some time. Surveys show that people under 35 actually prefer football and basketball and many predict that bullfighting will disappear in a couple of decades for a lack of interest. The ban caused an uproar across Spain and a nationwide debate over a tradition that has inspired artists and writers including Goya, Picasso and Hemingway. Campaigners celebrated the ban as a

victory for animal rights, hoping it would lead to a nationwide ban of the spectacle but others dismissed it as a purely political move to win votes for ruling Catalan nationalist party, CiU. On Sunday, police stood by as pro- and antibullfighters faced each outside the ring, indulging in a bit of verbal violence. The owners of La Monumental ring said they had no immediate plans for it – they're waiting to see what the Supreme Court will say about the ban.

"How can we otherwise explain media provocation, financing and arming religious extremism?" he said, adding that as a result the reforms announced by President Bashar al-Assad had had to take "a back seat”. The government is

accused of a violent crackdown that the UN says has killed more than 2,700 people. However, the president denies the allegations, saying they are tackling armed gangs of terrorists. In the latest violence, Syrian tanks bombarded a strategic town in the restive central province of Homs on Sunday night, injuring three people, activists and residents said. Events from Syria are hard to verify as international journalists have been largely prevented from reporting there. The only people willing to talk about politics are those who still defend the president.

Women to be given vote

Ban on women in combat lifted Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith has announced that all restrictions on the roles that women can carry out in its armed forces would be be lifted immediately – but warned it may take up to five years before they are all removed. Suitably-qualified female soldiers will be able to serve in the special forces and front-line combat units. Australia's military has about 59,000 full-time members,

including 1,500 who are serving in Afghanistan. Women are currently eligible for about 93% of roles, including artillery duties. With the lifting of the ban, they will be able to fill the remaining 7%, so long as they are physically and psychologically qualified. Critics described the move as premature and a gimmick. Canada, New Zealand and Israel already allow women in all military roles.

King abdullah announced in his speech to open the new term of the Shura Council that women are to be given the right to vote and run in future municipal elections. They will also have the right to be appointed to the consultative Council. The changes will come into force after municipal polls on Thursday, the king said. activists who have been calling for greater rights for women in the kingdom, which enforces a strict version of Sunni islamic law, welcomed the move. uSa

Cardinal attacks over scandals The head of the Italian Bishops’ Conference hit out at Italy's political class on Monday, saying the country needs to "purify the air" of sex and corruption scandals. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco said it was "mortifying" to witness "sad and hollow" behaviour that damaged the country's image. The cardinal did not refer to Silvio Berlusconi by name but observers said everybody understood immediately who the cardinal was talking about. Mr Berlusconi is facing four trials on charges including tax fraud and paying for sex

with a minor. He has denied the charges and has said he intends to remain in post to the end of his term in 2013, despite recent newspaper reports that he was recorded boasting in a phone call that 11 women were queuing up to have sex with him. Cardinal Bagnasco said Italians had been left in a state of "dumbfounded astonishment" by their

political class which is enmeshed in scandal and preoccupied with selfpreservation, while the rest of the country suffered from a deep economic crisis. He said politicians had a responsibility to set a good example because their behaviour had "undeniable effects on culture and education" and influenced the young and impressionable.

Protests halt highway Bolivian President Evo Morales has suspended work on a highway being built in the Amazon, amid a national furore over the way opposition to the road has been handled and accusations of “extreme violence”. On Sunday police fired tear gas and rounded up

hundreds of activists staging a march against the road. Defence Minister Cecilia Chacon resigned in protest on Monday. Mr Morales said he will allow local regions to decide on its future. The proposed 300 km road, financed by Brazil, would link Brazil to Pacific ports in Chile and

Peru. Mr Morales has insisted the road is essential for Bolivia's development, but it will run through a rainforest preserve. About 1,000 protesters were staging a 500 km march on the main city La Paz when they were stopped by riot police in the Yucumo region.

ring in tears and the commentator was saying: “with children as young as this, unfortunately this is bound to happen from time to time”.

And, no, this wasn’t in some far-flung country where children are still sent to work at 6-years-old, it was filmed in a Labour party social club called New Greenlands, in Preston, Northern England.

The British Cage Fighting Association said that they in no way condoned the event while many adult cage fighters also said it was “disgusting”, “unacceptable for kids so young”. The Association described the childrens’ parents as “morons” for letting their children fight.

The film showed two young boys, one aged eight and one aged nine in the cage while a group of adults watched them wrestling around on the floor. One of the boys had the other in a leg scissor hold and was lifting him up before slamming him back down on the floor on his back. The child had put his arms behind himself to try and soften the blow. The younger child ended up at the side of the

The NSPCC also said that the spectacle was disgusting while the British Medical Association said they were “disturbed” that the children were fighting with no protective clothing or helmets adding: "Boxing and cage fighting are sometimes defended on the grounds that children learn to work through their aggression with discipline and control. believes there are many other sports, such as athletics, swimming, judo and football, which require discipline but do not pose the same threat of brain injury." However, Nick Hartley, father of nine-year-old Kian told Sky News: “What can I do? I can’t stop him. It's more wrestling than fighting. There's no punching and kicking, it's a controlled sport. He enjoys doing it, so leave him to do it." While Kian, when asked how he felt before a bout in the ring, said: “I feel excited.” Andy Whiteside, one of the men who trains the children, said: "It's being blown out of all proportion. (Our gym) takes part in tournaments where it's the exact same, it just isn't in a cage." Sharefight, the company who filmed the event, defended the footage and insisted the fight was in a "safe environment" under strict conditions. A spokesman for the company said: "The event involving the children was submission wrestling. Contact between the participants was restricted at all times. I would liken it to a game of chess, it's about outsmarting your opponent rather than overcoming them." Despite the criticism, the club has said it intends to stage similar events in the future.” The police have said that they will not be taking any action against the organisers.

Michelle Anderson, who owns the club which staged the event, insisted there was little risk and compared it to boxing. "The children were grappling. The cage fighting only comes when they get older. We hold boxing events here and kids fight then and nobody's complained about that. Mystery truffle found After being dug up during digging for potaoes and other vegetables in Moncrieffe Primary School’s vegetable patch, the white truffle has been identified as a rare choiromyces meandriformis that is described in only one book. It is apparently great to eat when dried and powdered but it is not known what it would taste like when fresh. First thought to be a Scottish Summer Truffle that is worth £350 per kilo, wild food expert Andrew Frazer said that although the truffle is unlikely to be poisonous, it would be a brave person who tried it fresh first. He added that the truffle is more interesting to mycologists than chefs and that the person who found it would be immortalised in the mycologists’ hall of fame. Samples have been taken from the truffle for further investigations and the school has been asked to protect the site where it was found. UK

Potential poisoner found Christopher Maguire, a 30-year-old of no fixed abode has been charged with the contamination of packets of Nurofen+ reported in The News a few weeks ago. The five packets of Nurofen+ were found to contain other blister packs of antipsychotic and anti-epilepsy drugs. Manufacturers Reckitt Benckister recalled the drugs on August 26th and stopped production but it is believed that there are still around 250,000 pockets that could possibly have the other drugs in them in the hands of the consumer. Maguire appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday. UK

Thousands of Sikhs gathered in London on Sunday to complain that they are suffering from harassment at European airports. The protest, which took place in Parliament Square, Central London was coordinated with similar protests staged in Madrid, Rome and Brussels. They said that they were being intimidated by security officials who showed disrespect to their religion by asking them to remove their turbans, despite successfully having passed through security scanners. The protest was organised by a digital Sikh television station based in Birmingham in the UK.

Alleged 'serial' killer arrested

*19411/ 9+6* 18'4 #07(#%674'& +0

The Guardia Civil arrested a 44-year-old man as he was leaving a gym in Mijas last Thursday and charged him with the murders of two women who were thought to be working as prostitutes on the Costa del Sol this summer. The National Police also arrested two women, said to be his mother and partner, in connection with the case. When arrested, the man, identified only as A.S., was carrying an Irish passport, which turned out to be false. Further investigation revealed that his father was from Morocco and his mother is German. Police had called him a serial killer from the time of his arrest, hinting that he may have killed other women in the past. By Saturday, in addition to

confessing to the murder of 45-year-old Argentine born Susana M.F., who had obtained Spanish nationality, in Calahonda on August 11th and 47year old Ecuadoran Maryuri Alice P.G. in San Pedro Alcantara on September 10th, the man said he had served jail time in Germany for killing a woman there. He told police he had visited the two Costa del Sol victims on several occasions as a client. Both women were stabbed to death and

robbed. During the raid on the flat where the man lived with his mother and his Moroccan partner, police found the women's mobile phones and credit cards which he apparently handed over to them to be sold or used.

It was the use of one of the credit cards to draw out €2,000 from an ATM that gave the police their first major lead in the murder investigation. Police are now investigating similar unsolved murders elsewhere in Spain.

Councils start sacking

Two bodies found Police are looking for the owner of a finca in Almonaster la Real, Huelva province, after finding the bodies of a woman and child buried there. The woman was identified as Maria del Espejo who had disappeared without trace 18 years ago and the child is believed to be the son she had with Genaro Ramallo Guevara, the Bolivian-born owner of the finca, in 1988. The woman's family always believed he had killed her and the boy, while he insisted she had left him and he did not know her whereabouts.

When the construction bubble burst, it left deep holes in local council coffers. Now 25 of them have fired around 500 workers in the past few weeks alone, according to the General Workers Union (UGT). Sevilla has sacked the most – 138 – followed by Huelva – 67. Malaga brings up the rear with 59. The numbers do not include those whose contracts have ended and not been renewed. Another 10,500 council workers have not been paid for anything up to four months. ANDALUCIA

70 per cent of fires avoidable Seventy per cent of the forest fires in the region are avoidable, according to the Forest Fire Investigation Brigades (BIIF) who investigate the origin and causes of the fires. They are either set deliberately – 37 per cent – by vandals, people with grudges or to clear dry undergrowth. Human negligence causes the other 33 per cent. Summer lightning accounts for three per cent of the fires, accidents involving fire another nine per cent while the causes of 19 per cent remain unknown. TORREMOLINOS

Nine films for gay film fest Nine films will compete for the Golden and Silver Carnation awards at the 2nd Costa del Sol Gay Film Festival, to be held in the Palacio de Congresos in Torremolinos from October 14th to 16th. Argentina, the United States, Peru and Germany are competing with one film each, the other five were made in Spain. TV producer Javier Quintas will chair the six-person jury and the “honorary godparents” are singer Isabel Pantoja and actor Liberto Rabal. The festival forms part of the Expogays Fair.

Confusing words When we see two words which look and sound the same in Spanish we sometimes panic. Nada is a prime example. It can mean he or she swims and, of course, it can mean nothing. La cocina is the kitchen and él cocina means he or she cooks. The real meaning of the word is made obvious by the context. So, today we´re going to look at the simple word book, which one would think of as being very straightforward, and some of the confusion I have heard surrounding it. Firstly, un libro is a book. However, la libra is the pound (as in pound sterling or that ancient measure of weight which I think is more or less half a kilo). Then there´s libre which means free. That´s free as in available. You see it outside car parks to say there are free spaces. If something does not need to be paid for it is gratis. Al aire libre means in the open air. What we´d call al fresco – just to confuse the issue. Una libreta is a note book and un libretto a musical score, as in English. You buy your libros in una libraria – a book shop. A library is una biblioteca. Then if you want to book something you have to reservar. Quiero reservar dos billetes – I want to book two tickets. Voy a reservar las entradas para el partido – I´m going to book the tickets for the match. Well I hope that´s clarified things for you all. Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie. T

he 9th post-Franco government officially ended when Parliament was dissolved on Monday – not to meet again until December 13th. In the meantime, the general election campaign officially begins at midnight November 4th – although it’s been going on since the last election in March 2008 – and voters will get their say on Sunday, November 20th, when they will choose the 6th post-Franco prime minister.

T

he first was Adolfo Suarez, who won the first post-Franco general election in June 1977. After the Constitution was approved in December 1978, elections were called in March 1979 and he was reelected. He resigned on January 25th 1981, to prevent a military coup, but dozens of Guardia Civil invaded Parliament less than a month later on February 23rd, while MPs, were in the process of voting for Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, who headed the government until the next general election in December 1982.

F

A shipwreck odyssey He’s the 6th PM since the return to democracy, and also the oldest. He has years of political experience behind him – in the ministries of education, the presidency and Interior, and also as a government spokesman. He has also held the post of deputy PM so it won’t feel too strange to take over from Zapatero. He now has to engineer Spain’s economic recovery and for that his university education will stand him in good stead. He can already envisage the thousands of headlines beginning with the “R” of his surname, which he is best known by. The Spanish have voted in this man. Whichever one they vote for, this is the portrait of the next PM of Spain. Whether he’s called Rajoy or Rubalcaba, they have all this in common and everything else, it seems, is pure coincidence.”

Points in common

elipe Gonzalez became the country's third and so far longest-serving PM when he won that general election. The fourth was José María Aznar who served two terms from 1996 to 2004, when José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was voted in.

Both men sport beards and smoke cigars. Rajoy plays tennis and likes all sports while Rubalcaba was a champion sprinter in his university days.

So who will be the sixth PM?

Rajoy was born in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. Rubalcaba first saw light in Solares, Cantabria.

I

t was another battle lost for Odyssey. The marine treasure hunter was told by a US appeals court last Wednesday to give Spain back the estimated 594,000 silver and gold coins it recovered in 2007 from a Spanish shipwreck in the Atlantic. It was a ruling seen as a blow to the Tampa, Floridabased firm, which has been fighting to keep the coins since Spain began its four-yearold legal battle in the United States to recover the coins. Odyssey says the fight isn’t over, and it could take the case all the way up to the US Supreme Court if necessary. But many legal experts believe that because the shipwreck salvage company already lost the case twice – in US District Court in 2009 and now at the US Circuit Court of Appeals – the Supreme Court justices may be reluctant to review the lawsuit.

I

T

n May 2007, Odyssey announced that it had pulled the coins along with some artifacts from the bottom of the Atlantic some 100 miles west of the Straits of Gibraltar. Company officials were vague as to the identity of the shipwreck and its location, code-naming it the “Black Swan.” But immediately the Spanish government suspected that Odyssey had found the remains of the Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes, a navy frigate that was carrying passengers and money from its South American colonies. The ship exploded during a battle with the British navy as it was trying to reach port in Cádiz.

Both support Real Madrid.

T

he ABC newspaper on Monday took a trip into the future to describe a day in the life of the PM-elect. The piece went roughly like this:

“Tired and worried, he stroked his beard. He would have liked to smoke a cigar but doesn’t. He also rejects the idea of practising his favourite sport. He would have liked to head north to his home town but realises he can’t leave Madrid, Real is playing tonight. His agenda is full, it’s going to be a decisive year ahead for Spain but he thinks he can take time off to watch his favourite football team playing a Derby against Barca. As he switches on the TV set, it gives him satisfaction that the predominant colours on the set at his official residence, Moncloa Palace, will be the red and white of Real Madrid, not the garnet red and blue of the former PM’s favourite team.

Rajoy is now 56, and Rubalcaba celebrated his 60th birthday a few weks ago. When they took power Suarez was 45, Calvo Sotelo 54, Gonzalez 39, Jose Maria Aznar 43 and Zapatero was 44. Both Rajoy and Rubalcaba have at one time or another been ministers of education, the presidency and Interior, and have also acted as government spokesmen. They have both been deputy PMs. Rajoy is a lawyer, Rubalcaba graduated in Chemical Sciences. Zapatero shouldn’t worry about leaving under a cloud. Suarez resigned to avert a military coup which was attempted anyway. When Felipe Gonzalez lost to Aznar he was knee-deep in political and corruption scandals, none of them involving him personally but those close to him. Aznar stood down voluntarily, but many people have not forgiven him for taking Spain into the Iraq war.

Odyssey secretly flew the coins out of Gibraltar.

T

here were several legal issues that Odyssey tried to bring up in defending that the coins and other remains were its rightful property under some sort of international finders-keepers notion. It stressed that there was no exact evidence that the ship was indeed the Mercedes, especially because the artifacts recovered didn’t match the historical inventory records of what the ship was carrying. But the three-judge appeals panel in Atlanta disagreed, saying the argument was unconvincing.

O

dyssey also unsuccessfully tried to challenge whether the Mercedes was on a military or commercial mission at the time it went down. If it had been on a military mission, this would strengthen Spain’s claims to the property on board the ship. Lawyers for Odyssey argued

that the ship, when attacked, belonged to the “Correos Maritimos” fleet which was charged in handling maritime mail routes between Spain and her South American colonies. But basing its conclusion on historical records, the court ruled that the ship was part of the navy. Odyssey argues the Mercedes cannot be a warship because Spain was not at war with the British when it was sunk. Odyssey has failed to point to any law supporting this argument. Further, this argument would negate the warship status of many sunken military vessels, including the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. A country need not be at war for a sunken navy vessel to be a warship, as countries have navies both during times of war and times of peace,” judge Susan Black wrote.

he court also agreed with the Spanish government lawyers that Spain was protected by the 1976 Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA), which establishes limits as to whether foreign governments can be sued in US federal courts. It also said that the 1902 Treaty of Friendship and General Relations signed between Spain and the United States outlines the two countries’ promise to respect one another’s shipwrecks.

T

he government of Peru and 25 descendants of the passengers aboard also tried to muscle in on the found treasure by filing claims. Peru said it had legal right to the coins because they were minted in the former colony. But the appeals court also rejected their arguments. “Having decided in our favour on sovereign immunity and that everything must be returned to Spain’s custody, the court did not need to go any further and review the details of the claims of the individuals who allege that they are descendants of Spanish citizens who had something on the ship,” said James Goold, Spain’s attorney in an email message. But until the legal battle is entirely over, the coins will continue to remain in the possession of the US Marshals Service for safekeeping.

N

ow Odyssey has said that it has reached a deal with the British authorities to salvage some 250 tons of silver bars from the SS Gairsoppa, which was sunk off the coast of Galway by a German submarine in 1941. Odyssey will split the proceeds from the treasure 20 percent to the government and 80 percent for the firm. It should have reached a similar deal with the Madrid authorities.

Med Technology Fuengirola - No 1 for all your computers Med Technology is a family-run business that has been on the coast for eight years and who pride themselves on honesty and customer satisfaction. The owner, Med says: “Our aim is to give all our customers personal attention. With many other companies you will not get this – they are not able to give the personal touch because they have lots of people working for them, so you will rarely get to deal with the same person all the time. At Med Technology this is not an issue – you will always get to see the same person and this is the owner Med, who is on hand to discuss any problems you have concerning anything to do with your computer or internet. At Med Technology no job is too small – and even advice on how to set up your computer is free, not the case in many tech companies. In today’s hard times we tend to think that a computer is not important to fix and leave it for another day. We often think the problem is not that bad and carry on using it, but in the long run, not having your computer looked at is going to cost you more than you thought. You may think the solution to the problem is simple – send it back to the manufacturer – only to find they tend to charge you for parts you didn’t even need. At Med Technology we

ensure this does not happen. We will have our technicians look at your computer and inform you exactly what the problem is and what it will cost before fixing it – you are then free to decide whether or not you want us to go ahead with the repair. If it is down to cost and you can’t afford the repair at Med Technology we won’t let our customers leave disappointed, we will always come up with a solution. We are the cheapest on the coast and even if it means selling a reconditioned or a new computer at a lower price than a repair would cost, then that’s OK. Our main aim is customer satisfaction. All computers at Med Technology are in English or can be reformed to any other language you require at no extra cost. We are the only company on the coast that does not make a charge for changing the software into your desired language. There are no hidden extra costs as there may be with most other companies on the coast. We will discuss your needs and requirements and talk you through what we think is the right computer for you. And we pride ourselves on the aftercare we give to all our

customers – whether or not you have bought the computer from us, you will still receive the same attention. Med Technology offers all its clients an easy and cheap way to access the internet with no hidden charges – you only pay for what you need. If you only need the internet for, let’s say, seven days that’s what you pay for, not like most internet providers that will charge you for the month. There is no contract. All our prices are guaranteed and our price promise is if you can find a computer of the same spec elsewhere cheaper and in English we will refund the difference. One of our current special offers (see our advert on page 10) is an ACER allin-one PC AZ5700 core i5 fast processor 3.4GHZ 4GB memory 1TB HDD touch screen, WIFI, DVDRW, webcam, microphone, TV tuner, 23inch screen, wireless keyboard and mouse, surround sound, HDMI port, WINDOWS 7 HP. ousands of walkers head to Marbella - why not join them?

Strictly a new dancer

Thousands of people will walk 20 kilometres per day, enjoying Marbella, the beach and nature during the Marbella 4Days Walking event that takes place from the 9th until the 12th of October – a time of year when the temperatures for walking are usually perfect.

If you missed ‘A “Root” around Great Britain’ an ingenious event that was held at the Myramar Parque Shopping Mall last weekend for Brits and Spanish alike, then you missed something just that little bit special! Amidst all the other activities organised to stimulate children and adults, the T.A.P.A.S (The Andalucia Performing Arts Society) Cabaret group performed live, in costume and filled the cavernous Mall with evocative, nostalgic rhythms of the 1940’s. A joy to listen to, the talented Cabaret group sang the most popular songs of the era with most of the audience joining in! A Tea Dance was all the rage in the 1940’s and that’s exactly what was reproduced, with dance instructors, sandwiches, cake and song. Fabulous! Enlivened by the ambience, shoppers stopped in their tracks to enjoy the sounds and atmosphere recreated by this lively group. Encouraged by those already on the dance floor many including young Nuria, pictured above,

On Saturday the 8th all participants will have to present themselves in order to get the last paperwork done and in the evening there will be an inauguration party. On Sunday morning between 8.30 and 9 am the walkers will start their route of 20 kilometres. They have until 4pm to finish. On the last day, the 12th of October, the return to the centre of Marbella will be special: the Avenida Ricardo Soriano will be renamed ‘Via Gladiolo’ just for the day. That is where the participants will be received with the Roman symbol for victory, the gladiolus. Apart from the party, all those who walked the 80 kilometres during

these four days will receive the Marbella 4Days Walking medal. The idea is that of Dutchman Hans Wohl, resident of Marbella and the Royal Dutch Walking Association even decided to get officially involved by sending an expert to Marbella to give some practical advice. The Dutch walking association has been involved in other international walking events and is now collaborating with the organisation of the Walk Challenge that will take place in the United Kingdom in 2012. The walking routes have been marked, allowing the participants to see unexpected parts of Marbella. There is a different route for every day, the first day will be the easiest one, walking on the Paseo Maritimo to Puerto Banús and San Pedro de Alcántara. The third day is probably the most challenging one passing by Altos de Marbella.

There will be controls, medical posts and water points on all routes. Local businesses are offering special discounts for accommodation and products – all information can be found on their website. The organisation hopes to make this event a yearly one, getting bigger year by year. To date there have been walkers registering from the Netherlands, Spain, Israel, the UK and Switzerland. The fee for participating is €40 and people can subscribe and enter at www.marbella4dayswalkin g.com. This event has its origins in the Netherlands, in the city of Nijmegen. Every year 47.000 people get together to participate in the Vierdaagse of Nijmegen. This year, for the first time, there is a similar event in Marbella, and the organisers are ready to invite you to participate!

succumbed to the sounds of Glen Miller, Fats Waller, Vera Lynn and the Andrew Sisters. The most popular dance, which kept the dance floor buzzin’ was definitely the Jive, an uninhibited dance with so many variables it was just amazing to watch! Having a great time was unquestionably the order of the day and nobody I saw went away disappointed! You can contact T.A.P.A.S at: www.tapassociety.com written by Andy Busby of T.A.P.A.S.

A charity auction is to take place at the Sol y Sombra Restaurant (formerly Hoyo 19) in aid of the animal charities F.A.M.A and A.I.D. to which 100% of the proceeds will go. The event takes place on Saturday October 1st and starts at 2pm, so why not go along for an enjoyable afternoon and help the animals. If you wish to enter items into the auction please let them know by today Thursday, 29th September. Contact Janice on 619 377 787 or Pat on 620 354 885. Unsold items must be collected at the end of the auction. Sol y Sombra is on the A7053 Fuengirola to Coin road. From Fuengirola it’s on the right hand side just past the industrial estate.

Art and Artefacts in a surprising setting Pizarra's municipal museum is well worth a visit

T

he museum came as a complete surprise. The director, a charming young lady called Manuela, does not speak much English but was only too pleased to take us round (there are apparently English speakers if you can't cope with the Spanish, although some exhibits are labelled in both languages). There are two large exhibition rooms, a

b o R

renovated cow shed houses the Sala Gino Hollander and a similarly restored granary the Sala Agustin Clavijo. Now neither I or my visitors knew anything about Gino Hollander, an American artist who is still painting in California, but the more we learnt the more fascinating a character he became. Born in 1924 in Newark, New Jersey he was a successful film maker in the 'fifties and only started painting in 1960. In 1962 (at the age of 37) he moved with his wife, five children, two cats and a dog arriving in Spain with a mere $600 to his name! During the 28 years he lived here he perfected his style and became a sought-after artist. With his wife Barbara, he gathered together an astonishing collection of Spanish artefacts which they displayed at their home in the Cortijo de las Yeguas

(you can see this original setting on YouTube, just type Museo Hollander into the search bar). When he returned to America in 1990 he donated the collection, along with many of his paintings, to the Spanish government.

T

he first exhibition room – which still has original feeding troughs for the cows dotted amongst the displays – houses artefacts dating back from prehistoric times – a hand axe from the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, objects from the Bronze Age, including funeral urns from the necropolis in Los Castillejos de Luna in Pizarra, Roman glass and ceramics, mediaeval lamps and flasks, a marble column from Cordoba of the same era. Equally fascinating is the furniture on show around the display cabinets

– huge carved chests and cupboards – and the agricultural implements from a grandparents' generation – yokes, harrows, horse and donkey harness.

T

he Sala Agustin Clavijo houses Gino Hollander's striking paintings hung together with a vast amount of furniture from the 16th to the 19th centuries – friars' chairs, carved Gothic chests, typical Spanish cabinets, a bedroom scene with iron bedstead, cradle and rocking chair, a kitchen corner with old fitments and utensils. Then there is a wooden sculpture of Christ clothed which dates from Valencia in the 13th century and a huge book of psalms written in Latin. There is too much to describe here – the museum has around 5000 pieces, just go and see for yourself!

O

h, and after all that looking and wondering there is a delightful bar and terrace where you can unwind and admire the view and the gardens. The restaurant also serves menu del dia!

e Country Beer Festival is on again

Devotees of the “amber nectar” will be delighted to hear that there is another October Beer Festival this year at the mountain village of Jimera de Libar.

This is actually the third “Oktober Beer Fest” put together by Paul Darwent. Paul – who enjoys considerable popularity with his mountain events

and festivals – has invited three acts to perform live on the day. This year it’s the turn of Thrifty Malone, a folk rock band from Gibraltar, then special guest American born Neon Leon (pictured right). Leon who mainly lives and performs reggae and blues in Germany is reported to put on quite a show. And finally there is toe-tapping “good ole”, popular rock-abilly Málaga band The Beerbellys (pictured left). The Festival, on Saturday 1st of October, gets under way around midday and goes on to 10.00 at night. It is a real

There is an all-day South African style barbecue, all sorts of Tapas and snacks, coffees and soft drinks and, of course, lots and lots of beer, tasty ales from Spain, Belgium, Denmark, the UK and Germany. The best way to get there is by train as Estacion de Jimera de Libar is on the Algeciras to Bobadilla railway line. If you're going up from the coast by car or motorcycle then turn inland at Manilva and follow the road up to Gaucin, then on the N 369 to Jimera de Libar. It's

Friends With Benefits

John Goodman in “Red Star”

By Will Gluck starring Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis In the good ole days romantic comedies involved a simple enough plot. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl and to the sound of violins it all ends happily ever after. Nowadays though the romantic stuff takes a back seat to the new-wave no-strings-attached sex on tap stuff, in which love is a

dirty word to be mentioned by neither party. It's becoming a well-worn storyline now. It doesn't seem like five minutes ago that Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman were friends with benefits in No Strings Attached. Here, in Friends With Benefits, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis

play smart, sassy twentysomethings who, for various emotional reasons, have decided to forego the sappy stuff. Kunis plays Jamie, a headhunter who recruits Dylan (Timberlake) to his dream job as a Manhatten based magazine art director. They hang out together, laugh at traditional movie rom-coms like Sleepless in Seattle (a touch of irony, of course), and indulge in a lot of sparky dialogue and smart one-liners as they develop their plan to treat sex as a fun game to play with no ties involved. The two leads work well together as the characters try to maintain

the facade of not truly caring for each other. But of course it turns out that at heart, Jamie does believe in true love, Dylan struggles with his jealous feelings when Jamie briefly meets someone else, and Jamie is hurt when she overhears Dylan denying they are in a relationship at all. So, no gold stars for guessing where the story will end. But the likeable stars do bring some fizz to the big screen and a lot of critics have given this movie the thumbs up as the romantic comedy of the year. It may not be quite as clever as it thinks it is, but it's worth the admission and the popcorn.

evin Smith is one of the best comedy writers and directors of our time, whenever you watch a Kevin Smith movie, you know what to expect. For starters he almost always uses the same actors (Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Jason London), some characters will appear in every movie (Jay and Silent Bob) and you know what you’re going to get , a good laugh – with a tad of fluffyness.

Dogma” was one of Smith’s more serious movies and one of the most intelligent movies ever made about religion. Yet it was still very funny and got it’s message across. However, considering all the controversy and trouble Smith got from making “Dogma”, I never thought he’d make another movie about religion – but obviously I was wrong. Smith’s new movie “Red State” is not like your usual Smith movie, it’s a horror and it’s one of those “very real” believable stories of extreme prejudice – which makes it all the more scary.

Red State" tells the story of three teenage boys off for a night of fun in a neighbouring Southern town, following an internet ad promising them a three-way with a willing older woman. However, things don’t turn out the way they expect, and they wind up waking up in what a gay-hating and sex-hating Westboro Baptist Church would be like if they decided to take God's Law into their own hands and start killing the sinners themselves. Only to add insult to injury, while the three teenagers are held captive, the

Church begin to open fire on the ATF, creating a guerilla war.

M

ichael Parks gives a brilliant performance as the crazy preacher man, he’s very intense and quirky. John Goodman is equally as good, you kind of feel sorry for him, as he’s a good guy, following orders he clearly doesn’t believe in. Kevin Pollock also has a small part, which is unforgettable.

T

here were so many moments in this movie, where I covered my mouth with my hand, in horror or shock even. There are not many movies these days that are able to get such a reaction – it is a truly horrifying movie, a bit like Wes Cravens “Last House on the Left” meets “Deliverance”. That said it is an original movie. Smith has truly outdone himself, especially considering that this time he is venturing out of his comfort zone. My only problem is one scene seems to go on for a long time – it’s when Parks is preaching and it could probably have been edited or shot a little differently, but then again it’s a preacher man in a church, which is boring in real life, so……there you go.

S

hot with a comparably ridiculous budget and making the best of uses of digital technique it excels in action, drama, suspense and editing – big cinema of purpose as opposed to money-wasting operas of uninvolving excess. It is also superbly scripted, and the lines spoken are well away from cliché.

There could be an increase in finances and personal wealth, make sure you spend wisely and put some away for a rainy day. This is probably from the results of your hard work and efforts, but this is the time to keep going, not to become laid back about the fortune that appears to be coming your way. Careful planning is what is needed right now. Family matters may require some attention and social invitations start winging their way towards you. This is certainly the time to handle things in a cool, calm and precise manner. Great shifts in personal advancement or perhaps a change of employment may be about to take place. This is the dark hour before dawn when you know you have to keep your head down and work hard, even though inside you could be feeling restless. Finances play an important role in your decisionmaking processes - if you don’t allow yourself to get rattled, you will see clearly. To do as much as possible this week will hold you in good stead during the months ahead. Do not be shy to speak up and ask for exactly what you want because at the moment you are likely to get it. Others will definitely have a hard time saying no to you. Some information could be coming your way that will useful and insightful at a later date - initially you may pass it off as being unimportant but it will have its place. It is not the time for sleeping in or cruising through your daily life, neither is it the time to lay low – follow your instinct and then jump into action feet first. A leap may bring emotional discomfort initially but it will be replaced with knowing that you did the right thing. Finance and career issues are your driving force and if you are prepared to ride the stormy seas it will eventually lead you to those calm waters you so long for. There are those around you who are worried you won’t be able to meet your duties and responsibilities as you are in such a party mood this week. Others will want to be around you to share in the festive fun and feelings they are getting from you. Be aware of jealousy - there are some around you who have green eyes. What we can expect from you is originality, inventiveness and a sense of adventure, so let your actions speak loud and clear to others. There are deep inner debates going on in the core of your being and if you stop and think long and hard enough about anything, there is always a way to accept or justify any action that you may want to take. The best way to tackle these deep thinking moments is to get busy. In some area of your life you have captured someone’s attention and now they wish to know more about you - a brand new world is opening up for you, get ready to rumble.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

With the last knockings of barbecue time coming up this is a great recipe that, even if it turns cooler during the evenings, could be cooked outside then brought inside to eat. Alternatively, you can cook it on a griddle on the cooker in the kitchen or in one of theose wavy bottomed griddle pans.

Smokey Grilled Pork Chops Ingredients:

(Serves 4)

● 1 tablespoon seasoned salt ● 1 teaspoon ground black pepper ● 1 teaspoon garlic powder ● 1 teaspoon onion powder ● 1 tablespoon ground paprika ● 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce ● 1 teaspoon liquid barbecue sauce ● 4 bone-in pork chops (1/2 to 3/4 inch thick)

Directions 1. Preheat a griddle or wavy bottomed frying pan on medium heat, and lightly oil. 2. In a bowl, mix together the seasoned salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and barbecue sauce until thoroughly combined. 3. Rinse pork chops, and sprinkle the wet chops on both sides with the spice mixture. With your hands, massage the spice rub

into the meat then allow to stand for 10 minutes. 4. Grill the chops over indirect heat until no longer pink inside which should take about 12 minutes per side. Allow chops to stand for 10 more minutes before serving. Nutritional Information Serves 4: Amount per serving: Calories: 254 (Total Fat: 14.3g): Cholesterol: 66mg

Someone you have rejected in the past may want to enter your life again or could try and cause you to turn away from the path that you are currently on. This can put you in a difficult position and leave you with some choices that you have to make. It is up to you to take the lead in this situation and let others know what you are prepared to accept and what you really want. Do not take anything at surface value and make sure you ask all the questions you need to.

Having people around you who you can trust and rely on means a lot to you right now. This week you are able to see just about everything for what it really is and everyone for who they really are. This can weigh heavily upon you at times but it can also liberate you and allow you to know where you stand among it all. You could have waited a long time for some sort of equality within a relationship and this is likely to occur.

LOTS OF CHEMISTRY AND LOTS OF ARGUING GOING ON

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

X Factor USA Cheryl out, new girl in and, oh for heavens sake.... is he engaged or not to the poor girl? The X Factor took America by storm last Wednesday when it hit their screens. Following on from the success of American Idol Simon Cowell has spent a fortune producing the stateside version of Britain’s much loved X Factor. With chemistry between himself and fellow judge Paula Abdul fairly oozing out of the screen, the only downside to the whole show is that the critics are furious that Cheryl Cole will not be one of the judges, saying that she is far superior to her replacement, 33-year-old Nicole Scherzinger. Cheryl Cole was seen in last week’s first episode but then it was

Big Brother droops While the X Factor has hit phenomenal ratings in the US, the UK’s Big Brother has hit an all-time low since it started in 2000. Last week saw the Channel 5 programme reach an average of around 900,000, the smallest since the last low of 1.5 million recorded in 2009. The opening night, less than four weeks ago, pulled in three million for its eleventh season but had settled at around 1.4 million a night but the dip came after contestant Tashie Jackson left the house two Fridays ago. Over the years, the contestants seem to have been getting more and more bizarre in attempt to capture their audience but it would appear that it has probably just run its course. It was this year that Big Brother moved from Channel 4 to Channel 5 following a three-week run of the Celebrity version of the show which had Paddy Doherty winning. Channel 5 did not wish to comment on the ratings.

anounced: “Another town, another judge” and she was gone. While the New York Times said: “MIss Cole showed glimmers of being interesting”, The Chicago Tribune complained: "Scherzinger doesn't come off as an obvious improvement." One paper even implied that Ms Scherzinger was nothing more than a seat warmer. Cowell said that he felt Cheryl had not adapted well to US TV and that her Geordie accent was a problem. He added that she had been offered a seat on the judging panels of the British X Factor and also Britain’s Got Talent but had refused – the reason why there is now some animosity between the pair.

Cowell has been appearing on a host of American chat shows and, most unlike his usual reticent self, has been discussing personal issues including answering questions about his sex life! However, no-one can quite work out whether or not he remains engaged to make-up artist Mezgahan Hussainey. Reports are swirling around that he has moved her out of his main house into another of his Beverley Hills homes – known as the ‘girlfriend graveyard’ as he has used the house before as a stepping stone to get rid of previous girlfriends. Asked about whether he was still engaged recently, he quipped: “I’m not sure really!”

Jamey’s Mirren on Pacino Dragon released law Lady Gaga is to meet President Barak Obama to ask him to make bullying illegal following the death of a 14-year-old fan. Gay teenager Jamey Rodemeyer from New York put up with taunts from his peers about his sexuality for years and took his own life on Sunday 18th when he could take it no longer. His suicide follows that of a number of teenagers across the States that are being put down to bullying. In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, Lady Gaga writes, "The past days I've spent reflecting, crying, and yelling. I have so much anger. It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someone's life. Bullying must become illegal. It is a hate crime. "I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it... Make a law for Jamey."

Actress Dame Helen Mirren has said she was “thrilled” adding that it was “one of the highlights of her career” to work with her hero, Al Pacino in the upcoming but yet untitled biopic of the legendary Phil Spector. She will be playing Spector’s attourney, Linda

Kenny Braden after Bette Midler had to pull out due to back problems. Pacino will be playing the lead rôle as the troubled record producer, currently in jail serving a 19-year sentence for shooting actress Lana Clarkson.

REM lose no sleep US Mega group REM have announced that they intend to split after more than 30 years together – starting off in Georgia in 1980 and winning three Grammy awards in 1992. With singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills, they released their debut album “Murmur in America” in 1983 and went on to sell

millions of records throughout the band’s time together. Probably one of their best known tunes was “Everybody Hurts” and their most recent album, released in 2011 was “Collapse Into Now.” “Losing My Religion” was the band's biggest UK hit, reaching number four in 1991.

Cancer costs 'spiralling'

And that is where I come in, not only to do their hair but also to be their friend, have a cup of tea with them while they are under the dryer and chat. They all have great stories to tell going right back to the war.

The cost of treating cancer in the developed world is spiralling and is "heading towards a crisis", according to an international team of researchers. In their report, published in Lancet Oncology, the group of 37 leading experts from around the world said there is a "culture of excess" with insufficient evidence about the "value" of new treatments and technologies. They said the number of cancer patients and the cost of treating each one is increasing – estimated at £185 billion this year – and argued for reducing the use and analysing the cost of cancer services. The researchers said most developed countries dedicate between 4% and 7% of their healthcare budgets to dealing with cancer. They called for a proper evaluation of the relative merits of conventional surgery and less invasive surgery. The researchers also concluded that dying

Ed Wilcox The PSOE must be really pleased with Gill Scott (Opinion, 14th Sept. 2011), a bit of blind bias is right up their street! Many of us do know what swept Zapatero into power, it was the illegal electioneering on the day of reflection. If Aznar did anything wrong it was in not postponing the elections as he was entitled to do. Another propensity of the left is to vote for the socialist party because that's what granddad did, and "if it was good enough for him it's good enough for me". It looks likely that the eight years of destructive PSOE

Manilva government will finally put an end to that and people will now think before they vote. Gill Scott's letter is good in one respect, very good. It serves to emphasise everything that is wrong with the PSOE, highlighting the fact that their principal political activity is not to govern for the benefit of the citizens of this country but to waste most of their time and tax payers’ money in launching personal attacks on members of the principal opposition party. Some ministers (I have Pepe Blanco in mind), don't seem to do anything else at all. I'm sure we're all grateful to Pepino for the magnificent job he's doing in San Pedro but if he could

have perhaps concentrated a little less on dreaming up pernicious schemes to denigrate the opposition and devoted a little more time doing what the tax payer pays him to do, the San Pedro works could have been finished years ago. As Gill Scott says(sniping at Muriel Pilkington), if you're going to say something at least get it right. Is it right for ministers, paid from the public purse, and their naive supporters, to waste so much time criticising the opposition when it offers no benefit whatsoever to the voters? I think the answer is NO.

I tried the pumpkin and apple curry this weekend that was in Kym’s Kitchen a little while back, it was amazing! I didn't have cardamom so I replaced with a bit of nutmeg and extra cinnamon. Also, I did what the recipe said not to do, I overcooked it slightly and the pumpkin began to break up but the taste was fantastic.

It did make a lot which I thought was great as I love having leftovers. I thought it might also make a nice soup if I just blended it all but I didn’t try it. Looking forward to pumpkin soup recipe.

the

Editor says: It’s always nice when someone tells us that they have enjoyed the recipes

we put in the paper each week and this one seems to have gone down a treat as we have had other letters saying how much they liked it. We have run the one for pumpkin soup for the last two years at this time of year but, as we have again had requests for it, we will run it again next week for all those who want to give it a go.

e Moon The most prominent object in the night sky is our Moon. It has become such a familiar face that we sometimes forget that it is another body out in space.

T

he Moon is our closest neighbour, its distance to the Earth varies between 221,456 and 252,711 miles but it is gradually moving away from us by about 4cm per year. This may not sound like much but it soon adds up. It is now 168 cm further away than when the first Apollo astronauts were there!

W

hen you look at the Moon from night to night the most noticeable feature is its changing phases. People talk about the ‘dark side of the Moon’; but there isn’t a dark side to the Moon. The far side, which we never see, receives just as much sunlight as the near side. The different phases are caused by the sun illuminating different parts of the Moon as it orbits around the Earth. When the Moon is between the Sun and us then the far side is fully lit up and our side is in shadow. As the Moon begins its journey around the Earth then our side receives more light until it is directly on the opposite side to the Sun and so the face is fully lit and we see a full Moon.

A

nyone who has ever looked at the Moon will have noticed that it has dark areas and light areas. The dark areas are called the ‘seas’ although they are not really oceans of water, it is just that early astronomers who didn’t have telescopes presumed that they must be areas filled with water and so the name stuck. The seas were created millions of years ago when the Moon was still in a molten lavalike state and the solar system was littered with pieces of rock floating through space. The Moon was struck by some really big pieces that caused the molten insides to spew out onto the surface filling in the impact areas, then it cooled. The result being that the dark seas is the insides of the Moon while the lighter areas are the Moon’s real surface.

T

he far side of the Moon is almost completely free of darker seas but is much more covered with smaller craters. The craters are the result of impacts by thousands of meteorites and asteroids over millions of years, and because the Moon has no atmosphere with wind or rain then the scars from these impacts will remain intact for eternity. Look carefully at the lower central part of

the full Moon and you will see a giant crater with huge ejector streaks coming from it and spreading almost right across its face. This crater is called Tycho after the Danish Astronomer Tycho Brahe and was formed over 100 million of years ago when a huge asteroid crashed into the Moon. To give some idea of scale, it is 50 miles in diameter and 3 miles deep.

N

obody is really sure where the Moon came from. Three theories currently exist. The first is that the Moon was made at the same time as the Earth from a swirling cloud of rock and dust. Another claims that the Moon was made elsewhere and was captured by the Earth as it passed by. The third and most likely is that another planet about the size of Mars crashed into the Earth when it was still in the molten stage of development and the debris from both the Earth and the other planet sprayed out into space to condense into the Moon. Rock samples brought back by the Apollo astronauts seem to support this latest theory.

T

onight (Wednesday 28th) is the beginning of the Moon’s cycle around the Earth. If you look very carefully to the west just after the Sun has set, you may just be able to make out the first glimmer of the crescent Moon. Try to have a look each night and you will see its phase growing as it moves higher and higher in the sky until it reaches full Moon on October 12th.

Backheel penalty star killed in car crash Theyab Awana, who became an internet sensation this summer when he scored a backheeled penalty for the UAE, has tragically died in a car crash at the age of just 21.The rising star, who played for UAE club Bani Yesi, had his 13 year old brother with him at the time who is believed to be in intensive care. Awana was best remembered for scoring a back-heeled penalty in the UAE’s 6-2 friendly win against Lebanon in July, which was viewed over one million times on You Tube.

Vettel gets closer to title To win the 2011 drivers’ title at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, Sebastian Vettel, the leader of the Formula One series, had several scenarios available. But whatever happened, he had to finish on the podium, in the top three spots. That feat would not be difficult, given that he had ended first or second in all but one of the 13 previous races this season, when he finished fourth. In the end, just as he had done eight times before this year, Vettel, the reigning world champion, won the race, easily. It was Vettel’s 19th career victory, and his first in Singapore. But the win was not enough to take his second consecutive driving title and become the youngest double world champion in the history of the series. That was due to the tenacity of McLaren Mercedes’ Jenson Button, whose late charge got him to within a couple of seconds of Vettel at the finish. Vettel now needs only one point to take the title, and

that, of course, will be merely a formality for the German driver, 24. The race for the driving title is finished for Vettel’s team-mate at Red Bull, Mark Webber, who came in third, and for Fernando Alonso, of Ferrari, and Lewis Hamilton, of McLaren Mercedes, who finished fourth and fifth.

www.thenewsonline.es

Lewis Hamilton was once again under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, after a coming together with Felipe Massa on lap12 at the same corner where he had problems in last year’s race, where he hit Mark Webber but came off worst and had to stop. This time Hamilton lost part of his front wing but

Massa suffered a puncture. The stewards decided it was worth a drive through penalty for Hamilton. Unjustly? When Hamilton finally got himself sorted out he once again made rapid progress through the pack with some great driving. A 'very happy' Paul di Resta was left toasting what he described as his 'best race' since joining F1 this year in his first Singapore Grand Prix – a superb effort saw him take the chequered flag in sixth place, and help to strengthen Force India's grip on the same spot in the 2011 constructors' standings.

Latest from the Oval Costa del Sol CC 193 all out Mijas Costa CC 156 all out Costa del Sol CC won by 38 runs Costa del Sol CC lost the title of New Boys on the Block to newly formed Mijas Costa CC, but won the toss and batted first. Their opening bowlers Roger and Kevin pegged the batsmen down to around four runs an over for the first ten overs. During that time Costa del Sol lost Phil, run out by yards by a super throw from Matt, then Gavin and Peter, both bowled by Roger. Change bowlers Jonathon, Keith and Geordie continued the good work, taking a wicket each to leave Costa del Sol in deep trouble on 60 for 6 after 14 overs. MCCC were in a dominant position and Costa del Sol needed to dig in. Tony and Imthias did that and more, staying together for 9 overs and putting on 71 runs in the process. 131 for 7. The Costa del Sol tail was vigorously wagging by now and Tony, Morly and Nick took the score on to 187 before Mick was last man out with the score on 193. MCCC’s opening batsmen were not to be outdone by their opening bowlers. Batting with

AUTOSALON COIN

controlled aggression they took the score along to 68 after just 8 overs – double the scoring rate of their opponents. Four overs later a much sorrier tale emerged. MCCC were reeling on 82 for 5. By the 18th over it was 116 for 8. MCCC were determined not to give up, looking for every opportunity to score and putting on 24 runs for the 9th wicket. Even at 9 wickets down they were still going for it, only to be foiled by a splendid caught and bowled by Imthias diving to his left. All in all a very creditable performance by MCCC who must be greatly heartened by giving Costa del Sol a real fright on their debut. Man of the Match award must go to Tony Crooks of Costa del Sol for his 58 runs scored at a time of desperate need, followed up by his devastating four wickets in two overs for final figures of 5 overs, 4 for 16. Why not come and join us for a game of cricket in lovely surroundings in whatever capacity suits – player, scorer, umpire, spectator? All are welcome. Cricket for all. Cavendish: World Champion Mark Cavendish finished it off with gold at the Cycling World Road Race Championships in Denmark, but he owed it all to a superb effort by his teammates “That’s a sign of the level this team has come to,” Bradley Wiggins said in a pre-race interview. “We believe in him and are willing to give 100 per cent for him. Financially there’s nothing in it for any of us.” David Millar said: “The bottom line is, we have to get Cav to the finish and shut the race down. These opportunities don’t come along very often. We have to seize it.” Cavendish duly rocketed across the line in a bunch sprint, ahead of Australia's Matt Goss and German Andre Greipel. "We had eight of the best guys in the world. It was incredible, we took it on from start to finish," said Cavendish, I can't believe it. We knew three years ago when this course was announced – we put a plan together to put these best guys together. It's been three years in the making and you just saw they rode incredibly. I'm just so proud. The biggest goal next year (is the Olympics) and I hope we can make it a world and Olympic double." The eight-man GB team

showed amazing patience after a seven-man break formed on the opening lap which featured France's Anthony Roux, Maxim Iglinksy (Kazakhstan), Pablo Lastras (Spain), Christian Poos (Luxembourg), Tanai Kangert (Estonia), Oleg Chuzda (Ukraine) and Robert Kiserlovski (Croatia). They built up a lead of almost eight minutes before Britain, with Vuelta a Espana runner-up Chris Froome did amazing turns at the head of affairs to reduce the deficit. More and more riders attacked in an effort to bridge the gap but all to no avail. The German team helped out at the front for a time but it was the GB team’s

commitment to the plan that won Cavendish the coveted Rainbow jersey. The tactics were clear: a reluctance to get riders into the moves being made off the front of the peleton, in favour of an ambition to control proceedings throughout. There were few other teams that wanted to get involved with the pace setting and team GB found themselves policing the peloton – hauling it forward and keeping it together – for almost the entire race. Try to imagine riding a bike this hard for almost six hours knowing that

personally you couldn’t win. It says a lot for Cavendish’s talent and esteem among his fellow professionals that his team-mates were prepared to sacrifice themselves so selflessly, Bradley Wiggins buried himself for a superb stint at the front for the whole of the last lap, and pulled the peleton to within a bunch of seconds of the break. The GB team finally hauled in the remaining escapees and everyone started manouvering for the bunch sprint. The Italians looked menacing as did the Australians who took over at the front and looked to have blocked the GB team, forcing them further back down the line. Ian Stannard and Geraint Thomas were tasked with getting Cav to the front, but at the vital moment he lost their wheels. It was then that the true talents of the Manxman came good and he edged his way out down the right to unleash his awesome sprint and become the first British World Road Race Champion since Tom Simpson in 1965. Haas nets a cool $11.4 million Bill Haas had a sinking feeling when he heard the gallery groan, the first indication that his shot had tumbled down the slope and into the lake. When he saw the ball only half-submerged in water, Haas realised he still had the slightest chance, to somehow save par. “It was an all-or-nothing shot,” Haas said. “So if I don’t pull it off, I’m shaking Hunter’s hand.” As he had done throughout that final hour at East Lake on Sunday, it worked to near perfection. Haas splashed the ball out on to the green to three feet for par, then won the Tour Championship — and the FedEx Cup — on the third extra playoff hole. In the five-year history of the FedEx Cup, no finish was more compelling. A handful

of players had a shot at the $10 million with an hour left in the tournament until it came down to two — Haas and Mahan, in a suddendeath playoff with such high stakes that the difference between winning and losing was nearly $10 million. Haas wound up winning a combined $11.44 million, including $10 million for capturing the FedEx Cup. Mahan, who failed to save par from a bunker on the third extra hole, had to settle for $864,000 as the runnerup and $700,000 for finishing seventh in the FedEx Cup. Luke Donald, runner-up last year, finished third in the race for the $10m (£6.4m) prize after a one-under-par 69 to end on seven under. Donald tied for third in the Atlanta event with Aaron Baddeley and KJ Choi.

Superbowl Regain West of the Tunnel Trophy

Miraflores host their first Camero Cup competition

Superbowl recently defeated Benavista to regain the West of the Tunnel Annual Challenge Trophy. The event is played every September over two legs with six rinks (fours) representing each club, the winners being the team with the highest aggregate score over the two legs.

Curtain raiser kicks off the new bowling season at Miraflores

The first leg was played at Benavista and was spoiled by heavy rain, the match was called off early with Benavista leading by 12 shots. Superbowl Captain Craig Lewis offered to return to play the outstanding ends but this was sportingly declined by Benavista Captain Bill Ogden. The return leg at Superbowl was played in much better conditions. Midway through the evening it looked as though Benavista were going to hold on to their lead with some Superbowl rinks well down, though Mike Goodwin's rink always looked comfortable

The new bowling season got under way last week at Miraflores when the Club hosted the Camero Cup competition for the first time. It was delightful to see the members’ green full for the event, while our regular casual bowlers played on the East Green.

against the Benavista rink skipped by Malcolm Greenwood. From the midway stage Superbowl put on a charge with all rinks playing well, the rink skipped by Shirley Owen came back from an eight point deficit to lose narrowly 16-17, finishing as the only Superbowl rink to lose. On the next rink John Owen's rink were 10-

1 down against Tony Farmer and came back to win 15-13 enabling Superbowl to run out winners by 14 shots overall. Following the match a BBQ was enjoyed by players and spectators alike, washed down by the odd beer which helped the evening along. Report and photo by: John Owen

This is the third year the event has been held and on this occasion it was held over two days in a "Fives" style competition. This required teams of five people to enter playing as a triple and a pair throughout the event and while participants were able to change positions in their unit they could not switch between disciplines. There were three matches of eight ends each day for both teams and the participants should be congratulated on their stamina in light of the unseasonally hot conditions which were very draining. Entries came from members

of the majority of clubs on the coast together with some teams who are not normally seen on the circuit.

The final results were: Winners with 22 pts – Mike Detheridge, Alan Turner, Malcolm Greenwood, Barry and Wendy Pemberton. Runners-up with 16 pts and a shot difference of +48 – Dudley Calder, Dorothy Pilmoor, Denis Hanley, Bryan and Brenda Collier and in 3rd place with 16pts and a shot difference of +43 – Sandy Guthrie, Dennis King, Neil Marshall, Ken McBride and Jan Mcmanus. The tournament was closed by Miraflores

umpiring the tournament. Then the cash prizes and trophy were presented by sponsors Francisco Camero's Jo Winstanley. Feedback both during and after the tournament indicated that all participants had thoroughly enjoyed the format and that the event had run very smoothly. Report & photo by: Grant Frost.

Approval for new whip rules in horseracing Jockeys could lose their riding fees and a percentage of the prize pot if they break tough new whip rules announced by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). From the 10th October, the amount of times a jockey's whip can be used during a race will be nearly halved to seven times in flat races and eight in races over jumps. A maximum of five strokes can be administered in the last furlong or from the final obstacle. Leading jockeys and trainers have welcomed the changes.

Malaga miss out on vital points After Wednesday's good win against Athletic Bilbao, thanks to another great free kick from Santi Carzola for a 1-0 victory, Malaga travelled to Zaragoza on Sunday evening looking for a win which would keep them up with the leaders of La Liga. The first half was rather lacklustre with both sides showing little ambition, Zaragoza’s Postiga had a 20 yard shot saved by Caballero and Roberto saved well from Malaga’s Van Nistelrooy, who could do with a goal. corner was then headed off the line and Baptista curled a free kick wide. In the 2nd half Malaga had a lucky escape on 62 mins, when Postiga slotted home from the edge of the box only to be flagged for an offside, which he clearly was not. Carzola went on to shoot wide as Malaga finished the game well. On 90 mins Isco wriggled free to cross from Seba at the far post. A brilliant powerful downward header was acrobatically saved by Roberto in a Bank’s style

Delon Armitage says England are fully prepared to withstand the challenge of "dangerous" Scotland when they meet in Auckland on Saturday. Realistically, Scotland need to win by eight points or more to reach the quarterfinals, while victory for Martin Johnson's side would confirm their progression as Pool B winners. "They are dangerous but we are in the same situation," said Armitage. England manager Martin Johnson will confirm his line-up for the Scotland clash in the early hours of Thursday, UK time. Meanwhile, Scotland head coach Andy Robinson said his side can upset the form book by defeating England despite having to come off the back of a last minute 13-12 loss to Argentina.

Europe´s women seal a dramatic Solheim Cup The victory came after the United States had been within touching distance of retaining the trophy at Killeen Castle in Ireland. World number two Suzann Petterson was the inspiration, birdieing the last three holes to come from behind to beat Michelle Wie on the final green. Moments later, Swedish rookie Caroline Hedwall won the last two holes to snatch a half point against Ryann O'Toole, who bogeyed both closing holes. With Azahara Munoz having just birdied the 17th to move into an unbeatable position against Angela Stanford, Europe were able to start celebrating their famous win. This 15-13 victory ended a run of three successive defeats. On a day disrupted by the weather, the threat of lightning forced play to be suspended three times. European captain Alison Nicholas said it was the best achievement of her illustrious career. Catriona Matthew also delivered exactly the performance her captain wanted. sent out first the experienced Scot collected a fifth successive

victory, emphatically ending Creamer's unbeaten singles record 6 and 5. Creamer failed to win a hole and was seven over par for the 13 holes played. Matthew made a huge contribution for Europe with two wins and two halves from her four matches. And Sophie Gustafson was even more important to the home cause. When she closed out Stacy Lewis on the final green the tall Swede took her haul to four wins out of four and moved Europe to within three and half points of victory. But the US were in the process of hitting back, Morgan Pressel, Brittany Lang and Christina Kim all put points on the board for the holders and Juli Inkster snatched an unlikely half as she won the 18th with a par against Laura Davies. Momentum was at that stage with the Americans and it looked as though they would brush aside the setback of Kerr's withdrawal from the anchor match with Karen Stupples. (Christie Kerr never made it to the first tee because of injury, handing an immediate point to the home side. ) The world number three was unable to swing her club on the range because of tendinitis in her right wrist and departed in tears. Nicholas's tactics, however, were shown to be spot on as her team had just enough left through the dramatic closing matches to clinch the Cup.

Patrick Makau retained the Berlin men's marathon title in a world record time. The Kenyan finished in a time of two hours, three minutes and 38 seconds – to shave 21 seconds off the record set by Haile Gebrselassie on the same course. The Ethiopian great failed to finish having experienced apparent stomach problems around the 27km mark. "In the morning my body was not good but, after I started the race, it started reacting very well. I started thinking about the record," said Makau. "I didn't have any problems in the race. Last year I had some problems with my soles inside my shoe, but today everything went very well."

Tiger Woods gets a new bagman Tiger Woods has hired Joe LaCava to be his new caddie as a replacement for New Zealander Steve Williams. LaCava was the long-term bagman for Fred Couples, but the pair split in the summer after the veteran decided to reduce his playing schedule. LaCava has since been with Dustin Johnson, with whom he was working at this week's Tour Championship. "Joe is an outstanding caddie, and I have known him for many years," said 35-year-old Woods. "I've personally seen the great job he did for Freddie. I'm anxious for us to be working together." LaCava told Johnson – who finished tied 23rd – of his decision after the final round of the Tour Championship on Sunday.

CYCLING

More medals for British cyclists Mark Cavendish and his team mates hogged the headlines but there was more success for 17-yearold duo Lucy Garner and Elinor Barker who raced to gold and silver in the junior women's road race and time trial respectively. Bronze medals were picked up by Emma Pooley in the elite women's time trial and Andy Fenn in the men's U23 road race.
