BUT RAIN IS ON THE WAY - National News

It ain't 'alf 'ot for some, madre As temperatures dropped across Andalucia, the north of Spain enjoyed one of the hottest first weeks in October in living memory. The highest temperature – 34º – was forecast for Ourense in Galicia on Tuesday. Twenty-one northern provinces began the week with 30º and people flocked to the beaches to enjoy the last of the summer sun. Meanwhile four northern provinces – Vitoria, Teruel,

Soria, Salamanca and Burgos – had a taste of winter with temperatures dropping below 10º at night and not rising much higher during the day. But all good things come to an end and the rain is expected to reach the north by Thursday, sweeping down to the south on Friday.

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Again...

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Once again the area of la carreta up in coin has had water problems and, this time it was only mine that wasn’t working! “Oh, this is not good”, I thought as I looked in my water deposito and could see the bottom. The council “fixed my pipe” around three weeks ago and I have had a mere trickle ever since so, off Muriel and I went to the council and there in reception they had a piece of pipe that had apparently been cut from the mains in my area and it was chock full of what looked like stuff that someone had swilled out of a cement mixer and they told me that that particular pipe had only been replaced three years ago. It was solid! I would have thought that, in this day and age there must be some kind of filter that could be used and, while it is probably expensive, living without water isn’t really a viable alternative so I suppose that, over the next few years, we would be better off paying a little more to get constant running, decent water. certainly once they’ve done something with the pipes here, a glass of water out of the tap will be white with cal for at least a week after it’s switched back on again and, well, it can’t be good for you, can it?! A friend of mine had her leg broken and pelvis cracked in an accident recently. They chose to drive back to the uK, despite both being pensioners as they are very active people for their age and had got back as far as Plymouth when the went to a Harvester Restaurant for dinner. There was no pedestrian access from pavement to restaurant and my friend was hit by a car reversing out of its car parking space without seeing her. The thing is, this cowardly piece of wotsit then drove off and left her on the ground and hasn’t, as yet, been traced. I won’t tell you her name as that will leave her property vulnerable, but I hope they find him/her and that my friend makes a quick-aspossible recovery.

Govt giving ETA "wings" Castilla-La Mancha regional premier María Dolores de Cospedal and the Partido Popular's spokesman, Esteban Gonzalez Pons, accused both the government and the Socialist Party on Monday of campaigning on behalf of what they described as the "milieu of the terrorist group" – the radical abertzale left and the pro-independence Bildu coalition. They said the Basque regional government's proposal to move ETA prisoners – currently scattered in jails around the country – closer to the region if and when ETA disbands was made with the blessing of Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Socialist general election candidate Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba. They said this implies campaigning

Public Works Minister José Blanco told El Pais newspaper: "We do not edit ETA communiqués, nor those of the abertzale."

Successful police operations against the organisation in France and Spain have put most of its leaders in jail, and the radical abertzale left is showing an increasing willingness to follow the political path, which is leading terrorism experts to believe that the end of ETA is near.

He said the PP are worried that Sr Rubalcaba's hard anti-ETA stance when Interior minister may win him votes while “we are only

Volcano risk recedes Shoot out The probability of a volcanic eruption on El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, is very low, and although the seismic tremors had increased in magnitude and depth, the centre was moving out to sea, according to the government's committee for coordinating civil protection vis-a-vis volcanic risk, which met on Monday to review the situation. However, it decided to maintain a state of yellow alert. Seismic activity on the island started to increase notably on September 27th and 53 people were evacuated from the town of Frontera. The rise is not unexpected, as the tourist sector begins to lay off people at the end of the summer season.

More than 21,000 in the Madrid Community were expected to go on strike on Tuesday, the fourth day in a series protesting against the cuts in education. Teachers' unions have worked out a schedule that will involve their members going on strike for at least two days a week until the Madrid regional government reduces its

A spokesman for the Madrid Community’s education department warned unions and teachers that the cuts would go ahead.

This figure does not include unemployed people who are not claiming dole for one reason or another, who are thought to number around half a million. The number of unemployed dropped in only three regions –

Niemeyer centre to shut this week The €44 million arts centre in Avilés, Cantabria province, which was intended to have the same impact on the sea port as the Guggenheim museum has had on Bilbao, is to close just six months after it opened, with a flamenco show on Saturday, October 8th. The reason given for the closure by the new regional government of Asturias, which owns the buildings and part finances the centre, is alleged "serious irregularities" in the accounts. Regional culture chief Emilio Marcos said receipts and invoices needed to justify some of the spending are missing, adding that too much had been spent on hotels, trips and restaurants. The administrators, "shocked and perplexed" by the accusations, have claimed that the "very modest" €900,000 annual budget had been stretched a long way. They said the centre had transformed the city, quadrupling the number of tourists and

had stimulated the local economy. The Niemeyer is the latest to join a growing list of ambitious publicly-funded projects which have run into trouble. The construction of the City of Culture in Santiago de Compostela has been postponed indefinitely. The scheme has cost

300m (£257m) so far. Another is Huesca airport which was built four years ago at a cost of €40m to bring tourists to the province's ski resorts. It received just four commercial passenger flights in the three months to August.

Economic problems continue to dominate the average Spaniard's list of worries, according to a survey by the Centre of Sociological Research (CIS) in September.

The survey also showed that concern about the Basque terrorist group ETA continues to diminish, to the extent that just under

four per cent of those questioned even thought to mention it. The survey also confirmed growing concerns about health and education services, considering both areas to be very vulnerable in the current economic climate. Just over 70

per cent said the current political situation is “bad or very bad”, 2.6 per cent said it was “good” and only 0.2 per cent dared to say it was “very good”. Over 20% said it would be worse in a year's time, 17 per cent that it would improve and the rest said it would be the same.

'A hole in the accounts' The Partido Popular's deputy communications secretary, Esteban Gonzalez Pons, said during a television interview on Tuesday that if his party wins the November 20th election, it will find “a hole” in the accounts, as has happened in the regions and municipalities that

e cheapest and dearest places to shop Some people can save up to €1,000 a month – and €2,700 in Madrid – if they know their supermarkets, according to the Consumers and Users Organisation (OCU) in its annual survey of supermarket prices. This year OCU looked at more than 146,000 prices in 1,148 establishments in 65 cities

across Spain. The cheapest places for brand names were the Citroen cooperative shop in Vigo, followed by the Dani chain in Jaen and Granada. Consumers who prefer the more economical ownbrand products get the best deals in Alcampo, Lidl and Aldi. The supermarkets to

avoid are Sanchez Romero, Ercoreca and Todo Todo, found mainly in the north of Spain. The most expensive cities are Getxo, Barakaldo and Bilbao in the Basque Country, and the cheapest are Murcia, Vigo, Pontevedra, Cordoba and Huelva.

A gunman walked into a Madrid church last week and shot a pregnant woman before killing himself. He also injured another woman. Medics performed a C-section to save the victim's baby, who was due to be born the next day. The pregnant woman was accompanied by her mother, who had travelled to

Madrid to be with her daughter when her child was born. The baby, who died on Tuesday, had been in intensive care and allegedly had suffered brain damage. Police identified the man as Ivan Berral Cid, a 34-year-

old homeless man with mental problems and a police record of domestic violence and drug offences. They said he had not known his victim and had chosen her at random. There were about 40 people in the

church at the time of the shooting, just before Mass on Thursday evening. Witnesses said the man had knelt before the altar shouting that “the Devil” was behind him before he shot himself.

State lottery partial sell-off cancelled The government said that it had decided to cancel the public offering of 30 per cent of the state lottery last week because the market price was not high enough to guarantee the €7 billion it needed to raise to finance the country's sovereign debt. The surprise move pulled the plug on what would have been the biggest initial public

offering (IPO) in Spanish history but Economy minister Elena Salgado said the cancellation provided "an extraordinarily positive" image of the country. The sale of Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (LAE), famous worldwide for its Christmas lottery El Gordo (The Fat One), had been in the works since December 2010. Sra Salgado said its

partial privatisation will probably take place next year. She told radio station SER: "If conditions were met the process could be picked up again, but that is not likely to happen before the elections," referring to the November 20th general election that the ruling Socialists are tipped to lose to the Popular Party, which opposes the sale.

Belgians recover stolen car a couple who had their car stolen from them at gun point in Belgium two months ago spotted it while on holiday in alicante last week. a man aged 47 and a 20-year-old woman had held up the couple outside a courthouse where the man had just been found guilty of sexual offences and was making his escape with his girlfriend. The Belgian couple let down the car's tyres to stop the thieves from getting away before they reported them to the police. Madrid

Drastic drop in car sales Car sales in September registered the biggest drop in 15 years, on a level with sales in 1993. The manufacturers' association (anfac) and the sellers' association (Ganvam) have warned that if the trend continues, cars older than 10 years will account for 42 per cent of the total cars in Spain – the highest since records began. anfac spokesman Luis Valero said this would have a negative effect on road safety and the environment and urged the government to take the necessary corrective measures. More households, fewer members There are now just over 17.1 million households in Spain – an increase of 50% since 1991, but the average number of members has dropped from 2.6 to to 2.3 during the same period, according to the institute of Family Policy (iPF). The institute predicted that by 2025 the average household will consist of only two people. They said the main reason was a lower birth rate, caused largely by the fact that houses built today are smaller and not suitable for large families.

Billionaire investor George Soros told a news conference at UN headquarters on Monday that he can sympathise with the ongoing protests on Wall Street, which have spread to other US cities. He said he understood the anger at the use of taxpayers' cash to prop up stricken banks, allowing them to earn huge profits. Protests continued on Monday in New York, with many under the Occupy Wall Street banner wearing make-up to pose as "corporate zombies", eating fake money. Union members are expected to back a large rally planned for Wednesday. Last Thursday, the United Federation of Teachers and the Transport

Workers Union, which has 38,000 members, pledged support for the protests. In Los Angeles on Monday, there was an anti-Wall Street demonstration outside the court where Michael Jackson's doctor is being tried for manslaughter. Protests were held in recent days in Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago in front of their respective cities' Federal Reserve buildings. A march was also held in Columbus, Ohio.

An eight-member jury cleared both defendants of Miss Kercher's murder after doubts were raised over procedures used to gather DNA evidence. The

judge upheld Miss Knox's conviction for slander for accusing bar owner Patrick Diya Lumumba of carrying out the killing. She was ordered to pay him €22,000 in compensation. But he set the sentence at three years, time that Miss Knox has already served, which meant she was free to leave. Candidate would send soldiers to Mexico Texas Governor Rick Perry – who is seeking the Republican nomination for US president – said during a campaign appearance in New Hampshire on Sunday that he would consider sending American troops into Mexico to combat drug-related violence. Any deployment of US military forces on Mexican territory would almost certainly be unacceptable to the

Mexican authorities. Mexico lost around half its territory to the US after a war in the 1840s, and has since been very protective of its sovereignty. After the speech, the White House said it would continue its "historic level of cooperation with Mexico" to protect people on both sides of the border. The Obama administration currently provides substantial material

support to Mexican security forces, as well as close intelligence cooperation. The US has also deployed National Guard troops to boost border security, and uses pilotless drone aircraft to gather intelligence inside Mexico. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has been pressing the US to do more to reduce demand for drugs among its citizens and to reduce the flow of weapons from the US to the cartels.

Cannabis coffee-shop tourists banned A ban on some foreign tourists came into force last Saturday in the cannabis-selling coffee shops of the Dutch border city of Maastricht. City authorities say the influx of tourists buying soft drugs is threatening public order and causing major traffic problems. Coffee shop owners say the ban won't work and will hit the local economy. Visitors attracted by the coffee shops spend an estimated

€140 million elsewhere in the city every year. The ban does not apply to visitors from Germany and Belgium who are the majority of foreign customers. The move comes ahead of a proposed nationwide crackdown being discussed in the Dutch parliament. There are about 700 coffee shops in the Netherlands. The cultivation and sale of soft drugs through them is

decriminalised although not legal. An estimated 6,000 people visit Maastricht's coffee shops every day. Critics say the ban contravenes EU policies of equality and the freedom of movement. However, the European Court of Justice ruled last December that Dutch authorities could bar foreigners from cannabisselling coffee shops because they were combating drug tourism.

Three more people have been charged in connection with the hit and run murders of Haroon Jihad, 21, and brothers Shazad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir during the riots in the Winson Green area of Birmingham on August 10th this year.

Mitchell Harrison, 31, who was in jail serving an indeterminate sentence of at least four-and-a-half years for raping a 13-yearold girl in 2009 was found dead in his cell at HM Prison Frankland, Durham, on Saturday. He had suffered multiple injuries including having been disembowelled. Harrison had also been put on the sex offenders register for life after the rape at Kendall in Cumbria.

Fellow inmates Michael Parr, 32, and Nathan Mann, 23 appeared at Peterlee Magistrates' Court jointly accused of Harrison’s murder. They spoke only to confirm their names and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court again today, Wednesday. Harrison's family said in a statement: "Mitchell was a much loved son and brother and we are devastated by his death.

The three accused, aged 20, 25 and 30 were arrested in a flat in the David’s Heath area of the city and appeared in court on Monday.

Frankland is a category A prison that houses 800 inmates some of whom are Britain’s worst offenders, including rapists and child sex offenders. Ian Huntley, the man who killed the two little girls in Soham, Cambridgeshire, had his throat cut at the facility last year, although he survived the attack.

"Although we never condoned his past actions, he was serving his time and was by all accounts a model, trusted prisoner who did not deserve to die in this horrific way.

This now brings the total number charged in connection with the incident to eight. The other five who were previously charged are being held in custody.

"We look forward to the day when the people responsible are brought to justice."

Man held after toddler dies in fire A 37-year-old man, thought to be the stepfather of a child who died in a burning van on Friday, is being questioned by police. The child, two-year-old Isobel June Dobson was left in the van with her oneyear-old stepsister while her 22-year-old mother and stepfather were tending horses at Hessle Farm in Wragby, West Yorkshire. The stepfather managed to save the one-year-old but was beaten back by the heat of the blaze that eventually killed Isobel. Both were treated in hospital for burns but were later released. Calls were received by the fire service from the scene and surrounding area as the van plus three barns went up in smoke. It took ten fire engines to bring the fire under control. A joint investigation is being carried out by West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Man found dead in flat the body of a man, thought to be a 62-year-old local, was found on Saturday at a flat in Havelock Street, Kettering, northamptonshire but the victim has yet to be formally identified. three people, two men aged 30 and 35, and a woman aged 36, all from the Kettering, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police are appealing for people who have any information to contact them but believe that the motive for the attack was robbery and that the man knew his assailants.

Stay away from Kenya Following the kidnapping of yet another woman in the Lamu area near the Kenyan border with Somalia, the British Foreign office have issued a warning to people not to travel within 150 miles of the border unless it is absolutely necessary. An elderly French woman, 66-year-old Mary dedieu was kidnapped on Saturday. it has been reported that around ten masked gunmen entered the beachside property that she rents and lives in for around half the year at around 3am. they ordered her and her boyfriend to lie face down but the boyfriend managed to escape through a window although he was shot at by a single round from an AK47 assault rifle. He said that he wanted “to cut one of them” but decided it was better to escape to raise the alarm. it is believed that Madame dedieu is being held somewhere between dhobley and the Somali port town of Kismayo. Police spokesman charles owino said that Somali islamist Shehab rebels are suspected to have carried out this latest attack. on 11th September, profoundly deaf 56-year-old Judith tebbutt was kidnapped in a similar assault and hasn’t been heard of since. Her husband was killed during the attack and two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Human Rights Theresa May, the UK Home Secretary has backed plans to scrap the UK Human Rights laws. She said that the laws as they stand prevent the authorities from deporting foreign criminals and suspected terrorists. However, Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats have vowed to fight the idea and it is being said that this could split the coalition government, while the Tories are said to be delighted at Theresa May’s coments. Shami Chakrabati, director of the human rights group, Liberty, said; “Modern Conservatives should think again about values that were truly Churchill’s legacy. Only a petty, nasty party would promote human rights in the Middle East while scrapping them at home.” Human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson, QC, said that Theresa May’s position as Home Secretary was now untenable as she “doesn’t understand the Human Rights Act which forms the basis of British Law that protects the rights of the people living in the country.”

Tough stance against illegal houses

The mark the wedding of the Duchess of Alba, 85, to civil servant Alfonso Diez, 61, in Sevilla on Wednesday, October 5th, Intervui magazine this week published a photo taken 20 years ago of a topless duchess on an Ibiza beach.

Gena – Ecologists in Action fear that if the thousands of illegal houses in Axarquia are legalised, councils in the area will take it as a sign that they can build on land not suitable for development. A spokesman for Gena, a group which studies nature in the Axarquia, said that no political party wants to run the risk of alienating voters by demolishing the houses, but proposed very

The wedding will take place in the chapel in the grounds of the Palacio de las Duenas, a 16thcentury estate where the duchess lived with her two previous husbands and raised her five children. Seville may lose World Heritage status *19411/ 9+6* 18'4

The Andalucian capital runs the risk of losing its World Heritage status if the local authorities allow construction to go ahead on the planned 178- metre high Pelli tower, which threatens to overshadow the city's iconic 97-metre high Giralda tower. In June this year, Unesco asked the Spanish government to intervene and stop the work until a final report on the tower's impact on the city's skyline is completed next year. Unesco argues that the Pelli tower's visual impact will completely overshadow the Cathedral and its Giralda tower, the Real Alcazar and the Archivos de Indies which houses tons of original documents about the Spanish empire in South America. These were the three decisive factors in Unesco's decision to give the city World Heritage status in 1987. One of the city's main economic powers, Cajasol (now integrated in Banca Civica), backs completing its construction but the socalled Tumbala! (Knock it down) platform, formed by 20 associations ranging from Ecologists in Action to local conservationist groups, bitterly opposes it. Only a third of the Pelli tower has been built so far and Seville City Council has still not decided whether to let further construction go ahead. New Mayor Juan Ignacio Zoido (Partido Popular), who promised to have the tower pulled down during his election campaign earlier this year, has written to the Junta de Andalucia and Culture Minister Angeles Gonzalez-Sinde asking who will assume the financial burden of compensating the developers if his council decides to revise or annul the licence. The head of the Junta's Cultural department, Paulino Plato, has said the City Council granted the licence and will be responsible for any compensation if it cancels it. “What they can't do is transfer the responsibility from one administration to another,” he said,

12 arrested in eviction Twelve people were arrested and six injured when police charged 30 members of the so-called STop platform who were trying to prevent an eviction in the rural colony of caulina last Friday. Some 40 policeman firing rubber bullets and wielding truncheons finally dispersed the group, who all belonged to the M-15 youth protest movement. The family evicted said the caja granada had sold their finca, worth €300,000, to recover the €24,000 they still had to pay off on their mortgage. Jaén

Woman drowns children a 30-year-old woman was arrested last week after her two children aged three and 11 were found dead in the bath at their home in the la alcantarilla district of the city. The oldest, a boy, had managed to phone their father, who was in hospital recovering from an accident, warning him that their mother was acting strangely. He immediately called the emergency services but they arrived too late to save the children. The woman had been suffering from depression for some time. Malaga province

Highest rents in Andalucia although rents across the region dropped around 2 per cent in august, rents in the province were the highest in andalucia - around €667 a month, compared to an average of €575 in the other seven provincial capitals and a monthly average of €641 in the rest of Spain. a spokesman for the online rental website pisos.com said Malaga owners were unwilling to rent out properties that were not selling, thus reducing the supply which raised the prices.

e Costa del Sol Lawn Bowls Association Member Clubs : Belplaya, Benalmadena, Benavista, La Posada, Lauro Golf, Los Amigos, Mijas, Miraflores, Santa Maria and Superbowl The 2011/12 winter season is now upon us and we welcome yet another, inland club into our ranks with the addition of La Posada (Ctra. Alameda, Antequera). Lauro Golf joined two years ago and they have contributed much during this period, both on and off the green, and have enjoyed both individual and team success in organised events. The association sincerely hopes that la Posada will enjoy the spirit and camaraderie which is associated with the sport along the Costa Del Sol. Sadly one of the stalwart clubs over the last 25 years

(Belplaya) has chosen not to participate in team events this season. A number of their members have joined other clubs but they will still host their popular Annual Open Tournament in February at their green which is adjacent to the Hotel Riu Belplaya in Torremolinos. As always, during the summer break, many bowlers have chosen to change clubs and this means there is always added interest at the start of any new winter season in events co-ordinated by the Provincial Lawn Bowls Association (namely the League, League Cup and President’s Fours).

LEAGUE ACTIVITY Back in the 1997/98 season the association introduced two leagues, the Tigers League accommodating one team from every club, and the Lions’ League for those clubs entering two or more teams.

Tigers League Despite several surprise results during the course of the season, Benalmadena Falcons emerged as last season’s champions with one match to play and, with their squad having considerable experience and strength in depth, they will start the new campaign as favourites to retain the title. Their strongest competition is sure to come from Benavista Panthers, who are always “in the frame”, and from Lauro and Mijas who have recruited a number of very experienced bowlers and are definitely “the dark horses” on this occasion. The opening fixtures will be played on Friday, 14th October with a 14.00 start, the exception being at La Posada which will commence at 11.00.

Lions League :This league has eight teams competing and Benavista Leopards will be strong favourites to retain the title. Matches in this

league will commence on Friday, 28th October.

Opening day fixtures Tigers League 14th October Lions League 28th October Benalmadena v Superbowl Aloha. Superbowl v BV Leopards. Benavista v Santa Maria SM. Midshipmen v Benalmadena Miraflores v Mijas Lawn. Mijas Lawn v Lauro Golf. La Posada v Lauro Golf BV . Pumas v SM Commodores. Los Amigos - BYE.

League Cup :Benalmadena (Squad pictured right) won the League and Cup double last year and they will be tough to beat this season. Only eight of the nine league teams will be competing as Los Amigos will not be participating on this occasion. The draw, which takes place at the next owners’ committee meeting, will be eagerly awaited.

Dates for this year’s event are as follows :Weds Quarter-Final 23rd November Semi-Finals Thursday, 26th January or Thursday, 23rd February Grand Final Thursday, 22nd March

President’s Fours The Superbowl four of Craig Lewis, Andy Salmon, Murray Johns and Alan Turner has dominated the event for the last two years but new winners are guaranteed this coming season as Alan and Murray have moved on to other clubs. Entries are to be

submitted directly to Murray Johns (Event Coordinator) by Monday, 24th October with the Draw being conducted at Miraflores Bowls Club on Wednesday, 26th October at 17.00. Dependent on the number of entries, matches will be played as follows :First Round Weds, 9th November Second Round Weds 25th January Quarter-Finals Weds, 22nd February Semi-Finals/Final Wednesday , 21st March By Murray Johns (League Co-ordinator), September, 2011

Memo from

Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

A low key campaign

Uttering the “L” word

T

I

his year's general election has been described as the most important one since 1977, but the two main candidates certainly aren't acting as if it were. The March 2008 election was more or less a foregone conclusion – Zapatero told so many lies and bought so many votes with his lavish hand-outs that the Socialists simply couldn't fail to win.

T

he March 2004 campaign was much more fun, with Zapatero at his histrionic best. He could afford to make wild promises to all and sundry because he was not tipped to win – until the March 11th train bombings in Madrid turned him into the “accidental PM”, as the Wall Street Journal dubbed him.

use the fact that the government originally blamed ETA for the Madrid bombings. But then, millions of Spaniards must have thought – like I did – “ETA” the minute they started hearing about the bombings around 8am on that Thursday morning. I doubt if we'll ever know the truth about those bombings but I've always suspected the “al Qaeda terrorists” did not act alone. The ones who might have been able to tell died in a shoot-out with police just days after the bombings.

T

he “someone” who allegedly sent that text message was Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, according to the PP. He categorically denied it but wouldn't let the police look at his mobile phone – violation of his right to privacy – but it wouldn't have been the first time he'd gone to the aid of the party.

H Zapatero March 2004

M

ariano Rajoy was the PP's candidate – having been handchosen by José María Aznar as his heir. But the only thing I can remember about him is when he burst into the RTVE television studios and demanded that TV stations and radios around country stop news broadcasts about the “anti-war demonstrations” outside PP headquarters in different cities. That was the night of March 13th, the eve of the election when campaigning is banned to give voters a breathing space to reflect on their choice.

A

s I only watch TVE1 which, as the state broadcaster, did not show any such scenes that day – at least while I was watching – I wondered what the devil he was talking about. I later found out that someone at Socialist Party headquarters in Madrid had sent out text messages to provincial branches to stage the protests to bring out the anti-war voters the next day.

I

t was a successful ploy. The only thing that Aznar did really wrong during his eight years in power was to take Spain into the Iraq war, even though most Spaniards genuinely opposed it and didn't need famous actors or filmmakers to stir them up. The Socialists were also able to

e's come a long way since then, as has Rajoy – by a different route. As Rubalcaba's star rose – he eventually ended up as Interior minister and deputy PM – Rajoy became the man who lost two elections, as Zapatero never stopped reminding him. But Rajoy has been growing in stature ever since Zapatero had to throw in the towel and bring the March 2012 election forward.

f there is one issue that Mariano Rajoy and Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba have both been quiet about it is what to do with the public sector. No one dares to use the “L” word when it comes to taking about government cutbacks. So far we are only hearing about the drastic public employee layoffs in the Balearic Islands. In Madrid, regional premier Esperanza Aguirre continues to assure voters that there will be no mass firings in education as teachers’ group have been charging over the past few weeks. Nevertheless, the proposed €80 million in cutbacks, including raising the amount of hours teachers must spend in the classroom, means a lot of substitute teachers and teachers’ aides may be without a job next year. But what about the central government?

I

n Greece, Prime Minister Georges Papandreou said on Sunday his Socialist government will reduce the pay for some 30,000 state workers in December, many who will eventually be retired early or fired. This hasn’t sat well with labour unions who have called for a general strike. The Papandreou plan is part of his austere budget for next year. In Germany, there are plans to cut some 10,000 government jobs over the next four years, and as much as 490,000 government positions will be axed in Britain under the same time period.

B

oth candidates are behaving themselves beautifully, in fact, which makes for a dull election campaign so far. I can't see it getting much more interesting because given the sorry state of the economy both men are having to walk on eggshells. One wrong move and they'll end up with more than egg on their faces.

T

he horns of the dilemma for Rubalcaba are his close association with Zapatero, on the one hand, and his need to woo the more left-wing Socialist voters back into the fold on the other. So he's making promises he might not be able to keep – like making the banks pay the nation's debt, with a little bit of help from higher taxes on drink and cigarettes.

T

he horns for Rajoy are that his backers include so many of those bankers who are hated the world over these days, and being unable to reveal exactly how he's going to create more jobs – because it will surely involve making it cheaper to hire and fire workers. However, I should imagine most of those nearly five million people who've been out of work for anything to three years now won't be too particular about how they get a job – any job – if the PP wins the election.

I

n Spain, it will be the new government’s job to draft the 2012 budget. Rubalcaba is campaigning on a pledge not to cut social services; he wants to introduce a 10percent hike on alcohol (except beer and wine) and tobacco with the hopes of raking in money that will go directly to paying the rising costs of public health care. He also plans on keeping the wealth tax and introducing banking fees to come up with a job stimulus fund.

F

or his part, Rajoy has not said what exactly he is proposing, but there is more and more talk within his Popular Party (PP) members that his government will embark on an extensive privatisation program of many state-owned

companies, which would mean a lot of workers will be taken off the public payrolls. We are, however, already seeing cutbacks of temporary workers, including teachers’ aides and substitutes, as I mentioned before, in different PP-controlled regions. Rajoy has said he will not raise taxes and suggests that the wealth tax would be abolished. But he hasn’t said how he intends to deal with the high unemployment or win back investor confidence.

C

entral government spending, including the salaries of ministerial workers, account for half of Spain’s public expenditures. The rest of the money is being spent by the regions, which, as in the case of Valencia, Barcelona and CastillaLa Mancha, have skyrocketing deficits. The economy minister, Elena Salgado, has told the regions to curtail their spending so they can bring their deficits down by the end of the year. She has not said much about making similar sacrifices at the central level.

P

ublic workers had their salaries cut by up to 5 per cent last year and their wages continue to be frozen until further notice. This could be the first step to a massive layoff plan. But the Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was smart enough (or maybe not brave enough) to venture in this area. The Socialists have been taking their beatings by the trade unions and leftist parties for what they call abandoning their traditional labour commitments. And they want to perhaps leave it to the PP to swing the hatchet as Rajoy is suggesting under his privatisation programme. The PP’s economy secretary Álvaro Nadal told Reuters last February: "(Public sector cuts) do not necessarily mean you are going to cut services or jobs. It means that there is money that you are not going to spend because it is not useful." There is a lot of money out there being spent that is certainly not useful.

T

rue, there are no easy solutions. The man who comes to office in November will carry a big weight on his shoulders and will have to continue to abide by the demands and suggestions that European leaders make to ensure that Spain does not go under. And if Britain, Greece and Germany are making sacrifices in their public sectors, it could only a matter of time when we will begin hearing someone utter that “L” word.

Community “I speak English” - more volunteers needed. Mijas Town Hall Foreign Residents Department has circulated a request for more volunteers to join in with the “I speak English” educational programme for school children in the Mijas area. The volunteers do not need to speak Spanish but they must have a good command of spoken

English. The “I speak English” programme has been running for four years and the idea is for volunteers to speak in English with children at the schools in Mijas to encourage and help local children to participate in English conversation. Anyone interested in knowing more about this

rewarding project should contact the Mijas Town Hall Foreign Residents Department who are especially interested in volunteers for Las Lagunas schools on Monday and Wednesday mornings but all help is welcome so give them a tinkle on 952 589 010 or send an email to frd@mijas.es .

Consumer Office warns of more abusive practices of some gas companies The Consumers Office of the Mijas Town Hall has become aware of a significant increase in the bogus inspections carried out by some gas companies that could easily be fraudulent or carrying out unnecessary work to “pump” up their cash flow. Local consumers have complained that under the pretence of carrying out a gas revision, technicians have gained access to their homes and changed gas tubes, bracing clamps and other fittings and then levied repair charges that the consumers were forced to pay on the spot. Notably the majority of complaints reported were made against registered gas installation companies. Consumers reported that it was difficult to know if a “necessary” repair was really necessary or even if a repair to an irregularity had actually been made or not. Some also suspected that the technicians were not really registered technicians and concluded that the work carried out was probably unnecessary and quite expensive. An inspection should only be carried out by a registered gas company or technician of your choice who will then issue an inspection certificate valid for five years. Therefore it is important to know when your current certificate expires so as not to fall for one of these bogus inspections. In Spain the obligation of maintenance to a domestic gas installation is that of the

owner or the person that uses the gas installation. Furthermore, to stop any possible fraud the Mijas Consumers Department informs all consumers of the following: as you are responsible for the maintenance of your gas installations, it is you who should contact a gas company before your certificate runs out and ask the company for an estimate. If you agree with the estimate then you should make your appointment with that company. It should be an authorised company and you should ask to see their accreditation, this applies both to the company's office as well as that of the installation / inspection technician that later visits your home. Once the company of your choice has carried out the agreed work, they must give you a copy of the certificate of revision showing that the installation complies with the up-to-date rules and regulations, which must then be signed and dated by you. You are not obliged to sign any maintenance contract with the company you have contracted to do the inspection, neither for any future gas installation nor for parts such as tubes and bracing clamps etc. There have been many shocking reports of both real and bogus gas companies almost forcing their way into people’s homes, many of the victims

have been elderly people or holiday makers. These companies use a variety of tricks to gain access, calling ahead in English claiming to be the equivalent of the Gas Board to make a compulsory inspection or pretending to be from the Junta de Andalucía and may carry bogus identification. They are very plausible but often quite intimidating, they may produce credit card machines for immediate payment or demand cash. It is a serious problem and there appears to be very little that can be done about it – if you let them in. There are no obligatory inspections of this type in Spain, anyone pretending otherwise is probably up to no good. You should not let them in, if they don't leave immediately call the police on 091(national) or 092 (local) and then report the incident to your local town hall or consumers office. This is a very profitable but fraudulent wide spread scam not limited just to Mijas. In Mijas more information on your consumer rights can be found on the Mijas webpage www.mijas.es or contact the Consumers Office on 952 582 911 or call the Foreign Residents Department on 952 58 90 10 or email frd@mijas.es . Welcome back Helpers NADFAS lectures wanted Every year NADFAS host a great series to Britsoc of lectures and illustrated talks, so here for aged Once again Age Concern is looking to recruit new volunteers to work in the shop in Estepona, or to work with older people in the community, or to help run the Drop-In-Centre, which is also in Estepona.

Members and guests of the British Society enjoyed a spectacular evening dining and dancing at the Welcome Back Gala Night held in the headquarters of the Society at Villa Luisa in Benalmadena. The evening began with drinks on the bar terrace giving the opportunity to welcome back friends who have been away from Spain during the summer months and to enjoy the views of the sea and the setting sun before moving downstairs to the function room. A meal of Mediterranean anti pasti, pork loin in walnut and pepper sauce followed by crêpe with

cherry and apple prepared everyone for an evening of dancing to the music provided by the entertainer Jason Oliver. A few ballads started off the dancing at a gentle pace after the meal, but soon the pace quickened for some more energetic dancing which kept everyone on the dance floor for the rest of the evening. For further information about hiring or joining the British Society or to read about forthcoming events consult their website at www.britishsocietyspain .com, e-mail britsociety @hotmail.com or call Alan Peel on 952 590 795.

Volunteers find that giving some of their spare time to help Age Concern is very satisfying as they can see that they make a direct impact in making older people’s lives more rewarding. No experience is needed as relevant training will be provided. If you are interested please give Eileen Dry a call on 608 458 555. Age Concern is also looking for a person to head the fund-raising team. After some time in the job Richard Wood has had to give up but they would like to thank him for the great job he has done for the charity.

Gibraltar

News Gibraltar awards given to three ladies Three people received the honour of being given the Gibraltar Awards yesterday, Tuesday, by His Excellency The Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, at The Convent. These awards are given to Gibraltarians for their outstanding works to further the name of Gibraltar in the wider world community – including those taking part in, or organising sports – and to those who help their fellow Gibraltarians have better lives on the Rock. Below you will find a short synopsis on the ladies who received their awards from Sir Adrian but, their total services to the people of Gibraltar far outreach what we can publish here. Tuesday’s presentations went to: Mrs. Maribel Lopez , for services to Girl Guiding. Mrs. Lopez joined the Guides Association in 1979 and was warranted as a Brownie Leader two years later. During her 32 years of service to the Brownies and Guides she has held a range

of offices. Mrs. Yolanda Pilkington, for services to the community in the field of Mental Health. Mrs Pilkington has been a voluntary worker in the field of mental health for over 15 years. She is the Deputy Chairperson of the Psychological Support Group, as well as being heavily involved in the Mental Welfare Society. Mrs. Priscilla Sacramento, for services to Disability and the Community. During over 20 years as a teacher at St Martin’s School, Mrs Sacramento raised funds and established new facilities at the school to help children with special needs. She has also served in the fields of mental health and care for the elderly. These three ladies have worked tirelessly for the community within their field and are a shining example to other Gibraltarians of what can be achieved.

Children learn about dental hygiene Children from St Bernard’s First School yesterday attended the ‘Day at the Dentist’ programme recently launched by the GHA Dental Department. They were all given their own toothbrushes and toothpaste and they learnt how to brush their teeth properly. They were also given some facts on why it

is so important to make sure they do this and how to eat healthily. More year-one students from other schools will be attending shortly and it is hoped that the scheme will follow on each year with the next intake of young children.

FRS Ferry vs. Cruise ships - an age old problem The Moroccan Workers Association has accused the Gibraltar Port Authority of refusing to allow the Gibraltar–Tangier FRS ferry to dock at the Western Arm on Friday 13th and Sunday 25th September – an accusation that has been denied by the Authority as “unfounded”. They added that no ferry is ever allowed to dock there when a cruise ship is berthed alongside the Cruise Terminal as the Terminal is too small to segregate transiting passengers from those passengers disembarking from a ferry. It is not a question of when a berth is available – it is when the Terminal is available to switch roles from one activity to another, under very strict international security regulations introduced after 9/11. On Friday evening, there were two cruise ships, the second of which sailed at 21.00hr. FRS was advised that once this had left the ferry would be allowed to dock. The company chose not to do so, as this apparently clashed with its sailing schedule. The same

problem occurred on the Sunday, with the second of two cruise ships departing at midnight. It should be noted that this is not the first time FRS has determined it cannot fit in with the Port’s operational requirements. The company has, on numerous occasions, been made aware of the cruise schedule on the Port website, which is updated daily and lists all bookings through to 2013, in order to determine its sailing schedule to and from Gibraltar. This whole issue has come about as a result of FRS making a decision, without consulting the GPA, to operate a much larger conventional ferry which cannot dock at the Ferry Terminal, as its smaller fast ferries (which could) were deemed uneconomic for the route. Since this problem has arisen, it is understood that FRS has substituted one of the smaller ferries when there has been a clash with cruise ships on Fridays and Sundays, but chose not to do so this last weekend.

Cruise ship arrivals This week sees a few of the big cruise ships arriving at the Port of Gibraltar: Tomorrow, Thursday 6th October, has two arrivals. P&O’s Ventura arrives at 8am and stays until 2pm, and the American Seabourn Pride arrives at 1.30pm and departs at 7pm. Friday, again sees the arrival of two ships: P&O’s Arcadia from 8am until 1.30pm, and Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ Ocean Countess arrives at 3pm and leaves at a minute to midnight. Lastly for this week, Tuesday has Fred Olsen’s Black Watch from 7.30 until 4pm.

Johnny English Reborn By Oliver Parker starring Rowan Atkinson, Dominic West, Gillian Anderson Who would have thought it? The most unlikely intelligence officer to serve in Her Majesty's Secret Service is back, with a mission to stop an assassination attempt designed to cause global chaos. A secret band of assassins, one of whom is a mole inside MI7, is threatening to kill the Chinese premier and Johnny English (Atkinson) is the only man who can save the day. It's been eight years since the

first movie, which was a financial success, though not likely to feature in a movie critic's top ten list of best spy thrillers. But here we are, with an older, slightly greyer Johnny English, who is as hilariously bungling as he ever was. He may dress like James Bond, but still gets things horribly wrong every time. The pompous English has been honing his martial arts skills in a remote monastery

in Tibet but is asked to return to serve Queen and country. He returns to MI7 to discover that it is now sponsored by a Japanese technology firm run by the forbidding Pamela Thornton (Anderson). English clashes with Agent Ambrose (a fine turn by Dominic West), who is suave, super-smooth and efficient – all the things that English isn't. Will Johhny thwart the assassination attempt? Why

does he chase the Queen through Buckingham Palace? And will he succumb to the charms of the MI7 psychologist played by Rosamund Pike, who falls for the blundering idiot. All good clean fun, and Atkinson continues to demonstrate that he is a comedy genius so expect plenty of laughs, if you are a fan of spoof spy thrillers in general, and Johnny English in particular. The critics have given it the thumbs up.

O

ver the past few years, I have managed to avoid movies like “The Hangover”, but this weekend I got sucked in. This weekend I saw “Bridesmaids”. I went out of my comfort zone, which is a rare thing, only to end up very disappointed, not that I was expecting it to be good, but this was beyond bad.

D

irector Paul Feig famous for ... oh yes, sorry famous for minor acting roles in box office movies, isn´t much of a director. Mr. Feig seems to be more of an ambitious actor, than director – he´s mainly directed TV episodes like The Office (US version), Nurse Jackie, Arrested Development, but when it comes to movies, this guy is totally out his depth. Over the past fourteen years, he has managed to put out three full length movies. If this was Tarantino, you´d say "Yes, but it´s the quality of the movies, not the quantity" and I would totally agree with you. However, Feig´s movies have no quality whatsoever, they are just mindless dribble and his new box office movie "Bridemaids" is a perfect example.

ow, I like cheesy, fluffy, chick flicks, just as much as any other girl, but "Bridesmaids" wasn´t even funny. To be perfectly honest, I found it rather insulting, making out that single women in their 30s are immature desperate, raving lunatics. You know a movie isn´t going well when they have to make poo jokes, I mean "c´mon", don´t insult your audience.

T

he story centres around Annie, a romantically unattached failed bakery

owner who fears she's losing her best friend, Lillian, the best thing in her life, when Lillian announces she's got engaged. Annie's anxieties deepen as Lillian grows close to Helen, a wealthy and beautiful new friend who quickly assumes control of planning all the pre-wedding festivities. On top of the main storyline of a female friendship being torn apart, the movie adds a romantic storyline for Annie, who starts the film answering a booty call from the casually cruel yet undeniably handsome Ted, but then develops a lovely flirtation with an Irish cop named Rhodes after he pulls Annie over one night thinking she's driving drunk. As the lowself-esteem Annie sabotages this new possibility for love, she also feels the most important friendship in her life slipping away.

S

ome of main problems with “Bridesmaids” was it was too long, if it had a good story and was told well, two hours would fly by, but they did not. The characters were irritating, especially Annie’s character. It was hard to care what was happening to these people, and the humour was pretty much non-existent. I also was not very fond of the sketch of the English brother and sister, as if English siblings are creepy close – it just wasn’t funny. I think out of the whole two hours I may have giggled, once.

I

f you venture in to the movies that David Feig has made, you’ll see more or less the same comments – his movies are funny only if you’re ten!

There have been a lot of opportunities to go with the flow recently but equally there has also been an ongoing pressure to perform. On one level you may feel worn out and a bit frayed around the edges by all the bolts of energy shooting within and around you. However, it is this very energy, the volume and the intensity of it, that will ultimately help propel you forward on the path, exactly to the place you need to be You must be careful for what you wish for as your desires must be carefully considered right through to the end. A level of discernment must be part of your wish-making and inner musing this week. Something is set in motion by the weekend and for you it will be the energy of pure emotion that is going to direct the tides. The advice to you is to harness positive, productive, emotional content and then channel it straight into the direction of your dreams. The tides and the trends require a big picture long-range lens. Can you access or acquire this within yourself? If you do and you can, you will be able to manage whatever annoying occasional setbacks place themselves in your path. This week has plenty of elevation to allow you to see things from a higher perspective helping you gain some needed perspective on your life. Conversations of all kinds are paramount now. Life for you right now is becoming a bit more transparent. You can see things far more clearly, and your radar of objectivity is at its best. There is a sweet emotional lift coming your way, the head becomes clear and that road becomes well worth travelling. It can feel as if you are carrying less weight, there is more room for ideas and for active dreaming. Something is offset that has been worrying you or weighing you down. This is just what you’ve been waiting for, an energy burst. It doesn’t take much for you Leos to come alive. You could feel new desires regarding all you wish to accomplish out there in the world and it is about pure passion. You won’t be able to win the world over in one leap but you are slowly but surely winning the hearts of many again with your contagious spirit. It will be as if you are lighting up from the inside out. You have been feeling far from grounded. Sudden events from all directions are coming at you and you may be wrestling with whether or not you have enough life force and capability in you to manage the tides or to pull something off. You have always been and will always be your own toughest critic. It is a matter of getting out of the way of yourself now and forever, Virgo. A sea of energy is opening up within, freeing up more than you can possibly comprehend

October 23rd November 21st

When the going gets tough, it can be tricky to trust in those invisible forces. Hard times can challenge even the most evolved beings but for you, Scorpio, you need proof. Proof those miracles can happen. Your faith in receiving help from on high may very well be restored due to an inner experience you have or because of some literal evidence in your outer world. Something illusive turns into something tangible and real, freeing you from a recent conundrum.

CAPRICORN Asking deeper questions and being prepared for what you might find as you search and unravel the thread intrigues you this week. It requires being ready and when you are ready and resistance is low, things happen swiftly. If resistance is high, well that is another story. A door that has been locked for a long time is finally opening, you may need to go back briefly, in order to go nd December 22 forward, but you will realise if you face a certain fear, a door will swing open. th January 19

There is no time like the present. Whatever you set into motion by the weekend will solidify itself in your life and in your relationships. Your efforts in combination with certain others will make a landslide of difference. It is all about doing things together, not attempting all on your own, it is your joint energies that will move mountains. So close your eyes, envision your desired direction and then make it happen.

Right now it seems that you are being confronted with influences, connections from your past and unresolved issues. The fear of loss of loved ones may also be creeping into your worry bank. You may not know the details, it doesn’t quite matter, but you feel the deeper impulses and the need to get things right this time. You don’t need to give it all away in your attempt to make up for lost time. Just take some deliberate steps of loving intent and as you do, it will free some of the lingering gravity.

e good, bad and downright ugly These were the dresses that appeared on the red carpet at the Pride Of Britain Awards this week It was only two years ago that Cheryl Cole said of Victoria Beckham’s designs that they were for the older woman and, basically, an Atomic Kitten would not be seen dead in them. Luckily for the 28-year-old Ms Cole she seems to have grown up and realised that “older” can be both sexy and elegant as she turned up in a stunning baby pink gown. However, it would appear that she still needs help after having to Twitter her fans to ask them which earrings to wear – something we “older” women would know instinctively – and also tweeted that she was very nervous about appearing on the red carpet again. Some more of the “better” dresses that appeared were

Daybreak presenter Christine Bleakley in a knee length gold bandage dress, Amy Childs’ electric blue Ultimo Cuture number, and Pride Of Britain presenter Carol Vorderman’s beautiful silver grey Amanda Wakely dress. TV presenter Nell Andrews wore what looked like an ordinary, short but nevertheless colourful day dress to the event, and an equally colourful gown was worn by Lingerie entrepreneur Michelle Mone. Not-so-good looks in the dress department came from Girls Aloud girl Nicola Roberts in a pretty pink ballerina length gown that was fine except that she is so white that it looked as though she and the dress had melded. The usually well-dressed

Strictly’s Tess Daley wore a short blue and black sequinned dress but, what on earth made her put those shoes with it? And Dragon’s Den’s newby Hilary Devey wore a plunging neckline black dress with rhinestone shoulders and trim. Jo Joyner had a short black, tiered dress that made her look huge but howler of the night has to go to ex-Spice Girl, Melanie C who was in a blue thing that didn’t seem to fit anywhere at all and teamed with flesh coloured shoes! Strictly contestant Harry Judd apparently hadn’t cottoned on to this being a “dress-up” do at all, while Ronnie Corbett’s wife wore silver trainers and Jason Donovan’s daughter wore baseball boots.

Downton Liz accepts Albatross proposal Downton Abbey’s Lady Sybil, played by Jessica Brown-Finlay has other strings to her bow. Not only does she playgutsy Sybil in Downton, a character she felt was ahead of her time, she is also playing Emelia in the new film Albatross which, on the surface is a completely different rôle in a different time telling the story of a young woman growing up. However, Emelia is every bit as fiesty and brave as Lady Sybil although she lacks the contraints of the times and tends to open her mouth and put her foot straight in it. She seems unable to tell the difference between a good idea and a bad one. Directed by Niall McCormick, Albatross is set in an unnamed British seaside town. Jessica stars as 17-year-old Emelia Conan-Doyle, a freespirited wannabe writer who's finding her famous ancestor quite difficult to live up to. When she takes a

job as a cleaner at a cliffhouse hotel owned by frustrated author Jonathan Fischer (Sebastian Koch), she seduces him into helping with her writing, something he doesn't bother to tell his nagging wife Joanna (Julia Ormond) or his bookish teenage daughter Beth (Felicity Jones), who also befriends Emelia. Jessica filmed Albatross before she read the script for Downton Abbey and says she couldn’t believe the similarities in the two characters. Albatross is now on general release in the UK.

Cricketer Shane Warne popped the question to girlfriend Liz Hurley after the recent Alfred Dunhill pro-am event in St Andrews, Scotland. Warne, formerly known for his boozing and womanising has literally become a changed man since he started seeing Liz. The once rather porky cricketer has slimmed down to a fraction of his former self and promotes the use of moisturisers and skin care products for men these days. The now sveldt Mr Warne says that Liz’s nagging was not the reason he got his act together but that his love of Liz was. Warne proposed to

Hurley after dinner on Friday at a hotel in the east coast golf resort of St Andrews and the couple later posted a Twitter message thanking wellwishers for their congratulations. The 42-year-old spin legend popped the question in front of other diners in the restaurant of the Old Course Hotel. When Hurley said "yes" the couple were given a standing ovation. Pictures showed the couple smiling as they walked arm-in-arm across a golf course on Saturday, with Hurley, 46, wearing a large sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

Take That might have wanted Robbie Williams “back for good” but it appears that, once again, Mr Willams has decided to go solo and leave the band according to rumours.

Twitter 'offers world mood clues' More than half a billion messages on Twitter have helped researchers at Cornell University, New York, to monitor changes in people's mood across days and seasons. In the past, it was difficult for scientists to investigate changes in mood. Traditional laboratory tests are limited as they are based on university students selfreporting their mood. As a result, some academics have begun looking at social networking sites to gather data on a wider and more diverse group of people. Arguing that monitoring Twitter provides a real-time reflection of mood, the Cornell teams looked at messages from 2.4 million

people's public tweets from 84 countries and used language detection software to score positive and negative feelings. They found that people start off brightly in the morning but mood deteriorates throughout the day before picking up again in the evening. Not surprisingly, they found people tended to be happier on Saturdays and Sundays than during the working week. However, the researchers said work is not necessarily to blame as the shift in mood pattern "was similar on weekends and weekdays" which instead "points to sleep and the biological clock" as the cause. Negative feelings were lowest in the morning and

increased throughout the day. The researchers said this pattern indicates that people may be emotionally refreshed by sleep.

Charles Cassam I would just like to say that, despite many decades of pooh-poohing the science, I am very impressed by Cathy Stronach's horoscopes. She appears to be generally accurate without the "soap opera" tendency that other newspaper horoscopes tend to lean toward. I read them to my family scattered around the globe and it has become something of a weekly event – rather amusing when emails are

Mrs C Knott Would it be possible for one of your readers of The News to enlighten me as follows: 1. For a renewal passport for a British Citizen residing in Spain it costs €152 plus €24 for the courier service. How is this justified? 2. For a renewal passport for a British Citizen residing in Gibraltar the cost is just £42 this fact was clarified just a week ago. 3. Also, I am told, if you are aged over 70, there is a

On another note, I presume you are aware that certain "ventas" hold your paper to ransom, insisting clients pay for drinks before they can take a paper – despite the fact they have taken the entire bundle from your drop-off sites. Fabulous cryptic

Editor says: The News is free to everybody and if places want to have it delivered (also free) to them to encourage people to go in their bars etc., then that’s fine. However, they are not allowed to hold people to ransom and force you to buy something from them. Please let me know if this is happening and I will get the papers delivered elsewhere within the area.

Los Boliches supposedly able to be scanned at the start and finish of a journey and save time. However it is not possible to charge the card with money (as an Oyster card is used in London), it is still necessary to scan the card at the ticket machine,

I would therefore like to know how the apparently exhorbitant costs of renewing a passport for those of us living in Spain is justified when, just over the border in Gibraltar it is around a quarter of the price? And, how can I find out more about the reduced rate for over 70-year-olds?

Editor says: The easiest way to find out about passport renewals of any kind is to go to Woody’s in Los Boliches

insert the appropriate number and pay cash for the ticket. The RENFE website is vague about its use. Does anyone know the point of this new card? Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

that is just behind the Confort Hotel to the side of the main square. I always do anything passport-wise through Pete and have never had a problem and he will always answer any questions. As for the cost, my Spanish colleague’s passport had run out and he had already booked to go to the States for a holiday. Not only did he get his biometric passport given to him instantly, for a fiveyear passport (he’s under 30) it only cost him €20 and he was complaining that it had gone up this year from €10.50!

Meteor Storm heading our way! Astronomers are predicting a possible meteor storm to hit the Earth this coming weekend. eteors or shooting stars are caused by tiny particles of dust and rock that float around in space, as they hit the Earth’s upper atmosphere at thousands of miles an hour they burn up and cause a brief streak of light flashing across the sky. The Earth is struck by about 100 tons of space dust every year. Most of it burns up harmlessly in the atmosphere but every so often a larger piece of space rock manages to make it all the way through and land somewhere on Earth. It is then called a meteorite.

omets are a different thing altogether. Comets are like huge dirty snowballs sometimes measuring from a few metres up to several kilometres in size. They normally live right on the very edge of the solar system in an area known as the Oort cloud. But some comets have been knocked out of their orbit and begin to fall in towards the Sun. As they get closer to the Sun they begin to vaporise and produce the famous comet’s tail. The tail is made from millions of tiny pieces of rock and ice from the comet and can stretch for many millions of miles into space.

T

he debris from the comet’s tail can hang in space long after the comet has been and gone. Several comet tails actually cross the path of the Earth’s orbit and as we pass through the debris it can produce a shower of meteors as the tiny pieces crash into the atmosphere. The most famous of the annual meteor showers is called the Perseid meteor shower that occurs every year in mid-August as we pass through the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. In some years hundreds if not thousands of Perseid meteors have been observed flashing across the sky.

A

nother comet called Comet Giacobini-Zinner goes around the Sun every six years or so and is another Earth-orbit crossing comet. It last came our way in 2005 and is due back again next February. It is only a small comet and its tail debris usually creates a rather lack-lustre meteor shower known as the Draconids. But this year astronomers have calculated that we will pass through a particularly dense area of comet debris that could produce a very spectacular meteor storm this Saturday 8th October. They have even got the timing down to within two hours of peak activity – between 8.00pm and 10.00pm when possibly 1000 meteors an hour

may be seen!

T

he Draconids are so named because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation of Draco high up in the northern part of the sky just to the left of the North Star. They occur every year with usually only a few meteors per hour, but in past years they have produced some of the strongest meteor showers and astronomers believe this could be a particularly vintage year. The only ‘fly in the ointment’ is that there will be an almost full Moon whose bright light will drown out most of the fainter meteors.

I

f you want to watch the shower then you don’t need any special equipment. Just sit outside away from any streetlights, preferably in a reclining chair or sun bed with a nice bottle of wine, and look towards the north near to the very bright star Vega. You may see meteors anywhere in the sky but if you follow an imaginary line backwards then they all appear to radiate from one point in the sky. Most of them will look like very faint gossamer trails but every now and then we may get to see a brighter ‘fireball’ as a larger piece of debris strikes the atmosphere.

W

e are in no danger whatsoever, as none of the pieces of debris is big enough to cause any harm to the Earth so just lie back and enjoy one of the solar systems free displays!

V

Tell us something we don’t know! Britain's major cities are among the hardest in Europe to get around without a car, according to research. London, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh and Belfast were all in the bottom half of a 13-strong ease-of-travel city table released recently. Stockholm was judged to be the best European city to get around without a car, followed by Helsinki, Prague, Paris and Berlin. Only Rome, in 13th and last place, was deemed to be less 'green' and public transport-friendly than the UK's main cities.

Win for Pedrosa Two new designers

painful end with a broken collarbone last season. The incident-packed grand prix contained three ride-through penalties, five accidents, a rare mistake while leading by Casey Stoner – Stoner recovered from going off the track to take third behind Pedrosa and Lorenzo as his lead over Lorenzo at the top of the standings was cut to 40 points. Stoner and Lorenzo had both declared in July that they would not race in Japan because of safety concerns following March's earthquake, but all the riders were there at the start.

The race was only given the go-ahead after an independent

investigation showed there was no risk of radiation. All riders eventually agreed to race in what proved to be a thriller on a circuit which had been 70% resurfaced following damage in the earthquake. The Motegi circuit is situated less than 100 miles from the site of the Fukushima nuclear plant, which suffered nuclear leaks in the wake of the devastating magnitude 9.0 quake and subsequent tsunami. Stoner will start his home Australian Grand Prix, at Phillip Island on October 16th, with a 40-point lead over Lorenzo, with 75 points remaining.

for Mercedes F1 Mercedes have underlined their determination to start winning in Formula 1 by signing two leading names to bolster their design team. Former Ferrari technical director Aldo Costa (pictured far right) joins as engineering director. And Geoff Willis, who numbers Red Bull among his former teams, will become Mercedes' new technology director. They will work under the team's technical director Bob Bell – himself a highprofile recruit from Renault earlier this year. Mercedes have had a disappointing two seasons since they took over the 2009 world champions Brawn in time for the 2010 season.Their best results are three podium finishes courtesy of Nico Rosberg, and this year they are fourth in the constructors' championship, and have

been some way off the pace of the top three teams, Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari.

Baptista stunner puts Malaga top of Primera Malaga started the game well but it was plain to see that Getafe had come to defend in numbers and it was down to Malaga to break them down. With Malaga dominating, Baptista broke into the area only to be bought down by Diaz. A stonewall penalty – but to everyone’s amazement the referee

while Guiza did the same for Getafe. The second half began much the same with good Malaga possession but it was Getafe who broke the deadlock. Pedro Leon struck from outside the box which left Caballero rooted to the spot as the ball flew into the top left-hand

The Rosaleda crowd went wild as Baptista celebrated his wonder goal

corner. On 64 minutes Malaga went level, Van Nistelrooy at last getting on the scoresheet, heading

home after Joaquin's freekick had only been partially cleared. Getafe went ahead again on 68 minutes Valero getting the better of Eliseu to send in a cross which Miku converted, appearing to put the ball past Caballero with his hand, unseen by the ref. Getafe’s Lacen was sent off after the goal for a second bookable offence and so with 13 minutes left it was game on for Malaga. Rondon and Maresca were brought on to give more attacking force and the two players seized on a defensive mix up, for Maresca to put Malaga all square with two minutes to go. Delirium descended on La Rosaleda when three minutes into added on time a spectacular Baptista overhead kick hit the back of the net to give Malaga 3 points and for a few hours at least, they were leaders of the Primera Liga. Italian trio head to Spain for the 2nd Andalucian Masters at the end of October Italian trio Matteo Manassero and Edoardo and Francesco Molinari will be amongst the 96 players who will tee off in the second edition of the Andalucía Masters between October 27th and 30th.

“They have more years of experience on Tour than me and it is a difficult life at times, so I rely on their advice to help me find my way. We also practise a lot together, which is great for me," said the Verona native.

The European Tour event will be hosted for the second successive season by Club de Golf Valderrama, one of the most respected golf courses in Europe.

The Molinari brothers, current Omega Mission Hills World Cup Champions, were part of the winning Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor after one of the best displays of European golf ever, as Colin Montgomerie’s men scored five and a half points out of six on the final day.

Matteo Manassero became the youngest ever winner on the European Tour at the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar in 2010 at the age of 17 years and 188 days. Speaking of his Italian compatriots, Manassero said he considers himself “privileged” to have them as friends.

The Molinaris tied with Matt Kuchar and Stewart Cink in the fourballs, which provided a big boost for Europe and dealt a blow to the US morale. Spurred on

by the singing gallery, which chanted “There’s only Two Molinaris!” to the tune of Guantanamera, they staged one of the closest matches of the 2010 Ryder Cup. European Captain Colin Montgomerie said: “I believe that Sunday will be remembered as one of the best in the history of golf, with a special mention to the Molinaris. “They were one down playing the last, they knew they needed a birdie to save a half-point and they made it. “It was an impressive performance; two rookies playing in the last match of the day, perfectly attuned as brothers, with the eyes of the whole of Europe focused on them. Francesco and Edoardo created a piece of golfing history on Sunday”.

It proved to be a good competition, well run, by Roberto Wright with a very nice atmosphere. The weather was still quite hot and all the games were played out with good heart and enjoyed by the spectators. All the games were well matched. Mixed Fours The final was between St Maria and Lauro. President Rob Robinson first thanked the markers, umpires, bar staff and Carol Wright who ran the kitchen so well and helped her husband Roberto to run his first competition, and all the people who had helped make this competition such a success. Carol was presented with two bunches of flowers to huge applause, and all the people who entered the competition were thanked for making it such a successful event. The prizes were given out by the sponsors Mike Dennis for Peter Male and Mike Collins for New Day Properties who were kind enough to help sponsor the competition in these difficult times. The next competition at Mijas is the Ball and Chain on the 3rd to 6th October. The winter opening times from now on are Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 6pm and Sunday morning 10am. Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey birdied three of the last four holes to claim the biggest title of his career and condemn Rory McIlroy to a frustrating runner-up finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews. In a round that began in torrential rain, Hoey, 32, squandered his three-stroke overnight lead playing the first seven holes of the final round in one over par. But the former amateur champion regrouped to eclipse McIlroy who failed to

capitalise on a brilliant outward half. Hoey also prevailed over another major winner from Northern Ireland, Graeme McDowell. The 2010 US Open champion had to settle for a three-under-par 69 to finish alongside Scotland's George Murray in a share of third, four shots behind the winner. After beginning the tournament with three consecutive rounds of 66, Hoey carded a 68 to finish at a record breaking 22 under par.

Did Massa ruin Hamilton’s race? Ferrari have denied Felipe Massa was encouraged to ruin Lewis Hamilton's Singapore Grand Prix. The duo collided on lap 12 after Massa's engineer Rob Smedley urged the Brazilian to 'hold Hamilton as much as we can', and to 'destroy' the McLaren driver's race. But in an anonymous blog issued on their website, Ferrari insisted that Smedley's instruction ‘wasn't malicious’.

France have made two changes to their starting line-up for Saturday's quarter-final against England. Nicolas Mas will replace Luc Ducalcon at tighthead prop, while number eight Imanol Harinordoquy starts ahead of Raphael Lakafia. There is no place in the matchday 22 for Ducalcon or Lakafia, and centre Fabrice Estebanez is suspended. Coach Marc Lievremont has resisted making wholesale changes following the surprise 1914 defeat by Tonga. After Saturday's loss, the France coach said his players "never got off the bus", referring to the revolt by the country's football team at last year's World Cup in South Africa. But Lievremont denied there were internal problems within the camp, saying he

had a "great deal of belief" in his team despite a lacklustre performance in their final pool game. Lievremont said: "We did not win the right to be happy. I do not think there are internal problems, just a frustration on my part but also the players. And also of shame after the match last Saturday. All this will, hopefully, generate a reaction." The coach was in confident mood, even though England have beaten France in their last two World Cup encounters. Karen Murphy had to pay nearly £8,000 in fines and costs for using a cheaper Greek decoder in her Portsmouth pub to bypass controls over match screening. But she took her case to the European Court of Justice. "She's overwhelmed with relief at the moment," Mrs Murphy's lawyer, Paul Dixon, told BBC Radio Solent. "It's been a long road for her but she's delighted to be getting the case back to the High Court now in London where it will be finalised, before very long we hope. "It will mean increased competition in the broadcast market that's for sure." The ECJ now says national laws which prohibit the import, sale or use of foreign decoder cards are contrary to the freedom to provide services.

The ECJ said national legislation, which banned the use of overseas decoders, could not "be justified either in light of the objective of protecting intellectual property rights or by the objective of encouraging the public to attend football stadiums". The ECJ findings will now go to the High Court in London, which had sent the matter to the ECJ for guidance, for a final ruling. However, it is unusual for a member state High Court to pass a different judgment to one provided by the ECJ. The decision could trigger a major shake-up for the Premier League and its current exclusive agreements with Sky Sports and ESPN, and pave the way to cheaper viewing of foreign broadcasts for fans of top-flight English games. One option will be for the Premier League to sell their domestic rights and European rights as one giant package, and another to have their own Premier League subscription TV channel available across Europe. The implications of the ruling could not just affect the Premier League but every sport that sells broadcast rights on a country-by-country basis.

Swindon Town manager Paolo di Canio has said he will encourage his players to dive in order to win penalties. He made the remarks after their 2-0 defeat by Macclesfield, in which Matt Ritchie had a penalty appeal dismissed because he stayed on his feet after being clipped by keeper Jose Veiga. "From now on I will tell my players to dive," Di Canio told BBC Wiltshire. "From now on I will bring in a different culture because this was a red card and penalty." He added: "I'd prefer that they risk getting a yellow card for simulation. My team are the only ones who do not dive somewhere around the field.”

Everton’s Rodwell wins appeal over red card Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell has won his appeal against the red card shown to him against Liverpool on Saturday. Rodwell was sent off by referee Martin Atkinson 23 minutes into the Merseyside derby for a challenge on Luis Suarez. The decision infuriated Everton boss David Moyes as his side went on to lose 2-0 at Goodison Park. The FA decided to withdraw the suspension and Rodwell will now be available for Everton's next three domestic fixtures. The Toffees face Chelsea on 15th October, Fulham on 23rd October and Chelsea in the Carling Cup on 26th October.

Andy Murray beats Donald Young to win Thailand Open Britain's Andy Murray outclassed Donald Young of the United States 6-2 60 in 48 minutes to win the Thailand Open. Murray took the first four games before Young finally got on the board, but the Scot easily wrapped up the first set. World number 55 Young could make no impact in the second as Murray, who beat the 22year-old at the US Open, collected his third title this season.
