SURRENDERED WITHOUT FORCE - World News
Rescued from the pirates British and US naval forces went to the aid of an Italian ship hijacked by Somali pirates 620 miles off Somalia on Monday. Italy's foreign ministry said that 11 pirates had been detained and the 23-man crew of the 56,000-ton bulk carrier Montecristo had been released unharmed. A spokesman expressed "great satisfaction" with the operation to save the D'Alessio Group-owned cargo ship. The UK's Ministry of Defence said the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Fort Victoria and a US frigate were sent to help the seized vessel and had not met any resistance when they boarded it. Members of the crew – seven Italians, ten Indians and six Ukranians – were said to be doing well, having locked themselves in a strong room from
where they could control the engine and steer. An MoD spokesperson said: "We can confirm that late this morning the RFA Fort Victoria, currently on Nato counter piracy operations east of Suez, responded to calls to assist a pirated Italian merchant ship, the MV Montecristo, along with an American navy frigate. Due to the presence of the warships, 11 suspected pirates on board the pirated vessel surrendered without force." Somali

WORLD Town to be evacuated after volcanic eruption confirmed Again... ICKHAM’S
The Canary Islands regional government has ordered the evacuation of the 600 inhabitants of the town of La Restinga on El Hierro, the smallest island in the Canaries, after an underwater volcanic eruption five kilometres off the coast of the town on Monday was confirmed. By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
At last, coin council came and fixed my water pipes. The problem was half a ton of cal that had built up in the pipe prior to my meter. Still, nothing technical took place - the guys took the pipe apart, whacked it with a monkey wrench, out popped a lump of cal followed by shooting water. As they say: “Sorted!” On Friday we went to the launch of the autumn / winter menu at nueva Kaskada restaurant in Marbella. Around 800 people turned up in their finery and there were performing jugglers, unicyle riders, acrobats and a 10 foot tall drag queen! Of course, there was also champagne flowing and canapés so everyone had a jolly good time and the new menu was launched. It includes fillet steak placed on a delicious mash, topped with a roundelle of puff pastry, crispy chicken that comes with fragrant noodles. The lunch menu is €15, dinner is €29, a special six-course menu is available for €35 and Sunday lunch is just €12.90. You can also hire their chill-out area for private parties. On Saturday we went to the Sierra Gorda Bistro and had their offer menu of two steak meals and a bottle of wine for only €19.95 for the two of us. I’m afraid we stayed rather late chatting to friends until after midnight so, apologies to Elaine and Mike for keeping you from your beds, however, it was a jolly good evening out so I don’t feel too guilty! My friend catherine who I told you had been involved in a hit-and-run accident is now back on her feet, albeit with crutches and a zimmer frame but, at 82-years-old, she’s doing pretty well. They still haven’t caught the “B” who hit her though. diet wise, I am pleased to report a weight loss of 9lbs for me and a whole 18 lbs for my husband - and I can still eat chocolate and even had a cup cake today that our Sue had made!
It was the first eruption of this kind in Spain since 1971 when the Teneguia volcano erupted off La Palma. The general director of the Canary Island's Safety and Emergency department, Juan Manuel Santana, had originally said that the population was in no immediate danger and that normal fishing activity is continuing, although the Merchant Marine has
advised boats to stay four sea miles away from the eruption area. But seismologists warned on Tuesday that another volcanic eruption could occur closer to shore, because the magma from the first eruption is bottling up and causing more pressure to build. The evacuees began to gather on Tuesday afternoon on the town’s football pitch, the meeting
point agreed in Volcanic Risk Plan.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the island people were sunbathing on the beach, as those who had cars in La Restinga headed in their direction for safety. More than 9,000 earth tremors have been registered on the island since July, the strongest – 4.3 on the Richter scale – last Saturday night.

Altamira cave in mortal danger The 14,000-year-old paintings in the cave at Altamira, which were not discovered until 1879, are now in danger of being ruined forever by bacteria and fungi which have become entrenched in the entrance to the cave in recent years. It was first closed to visitors in 1977 and reopened in 1982, when limited numbers of visitors were allowed in. It was closed again in 2002 after micro-organisms were discovered in the paintings, caused by the use of artificial light in the Sala Policromada. The regional
authorities of Cantabria are eager to reopen the cave because of the income it can generate for the local economy but experts at Alicante University, the National Museum of Natural Sciences and the Higher Council of Scientific Research have warned

that such a step could lead to the irreversible loss of the paintings. They said only a minimum number of scientists and researchers should be allowed to enter the cave which should remain closed to the public forever.
The Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the dismissal by the Bank of Spain of Maria Dolores Amoros, the former general director of the Caja Mediterraneo savings bank (CAM). The CAM was taken over by the Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) on July 22nd and Sra Amoros was dismissed on August 10th, after FROB discovered what it called “creative accounting” in a specific operation which had benefited her. The operation involved a yearly
salary of €600,000 and a life pension of €370,000 for her in the case of dismissal. It is the first investigation in what is expected to turn into a series as the AntCorruption prosecutor continues to investigate multi-million indemnities for bank directors.

Izquierda Unida Survival manual for MP to sue FBI illegals
Izquierda Unida (IU) MP Gaspar Llamazares said on Monday that he intends to sue the FBI for ageing a photograph of him to recreate a montage of Osama Bin Laden, the alQaeda leader who was killed by special US forces in Pakistan in May. The FBI first used Llamazares' photo in January 2010, which led the

Spanish government to demand an explanation from the US government. The US embassy in Madrid said the montage had been a “human error” and both the FBI and the US government apologised to Llamazares, who had threatened to sue the US if he did not get a satisfactory explanation. Llamazares has now said that despite
his protests the montage has since been used twice, not only to recreate Bin Laden's face but also that of one of his main confidants, Atiyah Abd AlRahman, who was killed by the CIA in August.
The College of Lawyers in Madrid and the Jesuit NGO Pueblos Unidos (United Peoples) have a guide to help illegal immigrants to overcome all the obstacles in their way to avoid being caught and repatriated. Unless the illegal immigrant is involved in a serious crime he or she will normally only be fined, or should be, according to the law. But both organisations complain that they are more often than not repatriated, without further ado.
“And the two people whose images were mounted using parts of my face were assassinated,” he noted ominously.

Turtle miracle in Crisis impacts population figures Catalonia Spain's population has been growing by leaps and bounds in the past ten years, fuelled mainly by immigrants from the world over seeking a better life. But the economic crisis has put an end to that, according to figures released last Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The INE now predicts a fall of half a million during the next ten years – from 46.1 million to 45.6 million. The government has toughened immigration laws and is encouraging foreign workers who are out of a job to return home, but many young Spaniards are also heading abroad, seeking jobs they can't find at home. The birth rate is also dropping partly due to a drop in the number of women of child-bearing age. The INE said that this is the result of a big birth-rate crisis in the 1980s when very few girls
The hatching of over 50 baby loggerhead turtles on Conca beach in Malgrat de Mar last week has amazed conservationists. Tourism and construction along the Mediterranean coastline had scared off female loggerheads from nesting on Spanish beaches as they did 100 years ago, although hatchlings have been sighted infrequently in Catalonia – the last time in 2006, when 40 hatchlings were seen in Premià de
Mar. Conservationists said the current batch of eggs must have been laid by a loggerhead 40 days or so ago without anyone seeing her. A spokesman for the Conservation and Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM) said it was “a rare and unusual event". The organisation is keeping watch and protecting the nesting area until all the eggs are hatched and the baby turtles make that long
ETA selling arms were born. The INE also said that for the first time in many years, the number of deaths in 2019 will exceed the number of births. By then, Spain will have 1.4
million people over the age of 64, 17.8 percent more than at present. Currently, the number of old people over 65 outnumber the number of children under the age of 14.
Security forces have reported they have strong evidence that the Basque terrorist group is selling arms, chemical substances for making explosives and virgin ID cards for falsifying documents, among other material, on the international black market. Most of it was stolen in France in recent years.
ETA is apparently feeling the economic pinch caused by abandoning the socalled “revolutionary tax” earlier this year. Basque businesses have paid hundreds of thousand of euros to ETA over the years to avoid being bombed, targeted or assassinated. The tax was dropped after ETA declared another

Keeping tabs on Muslim policemen The El Pais has reported seeing an internal Guardia Civil document which reveals that it is keeping an eye open for the possible radicalization of Muslim policemen in the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta. The paper published part of a secret report on one of them saying he had been “radicalizing with time”, giving details of the officer's travels from Melilla to Malaga to attend an Islamic congress. However, a police chief in Melilla said the
majority of the Muslim members of the police force are “dedicated civil servants who are committed to their jobs," adding that they “have our every confidence and our respect. We are not interested in their religion."
A Guardia Civil official in Melilla, told El Pais: "There are cases of Christian guardias who have married Muslim women and have converted to Islam. We see that as normal and natural here. We are not prejudiced. In the academies we even
have special menus for them." The army tends to be less tolerant and has expelled a number of Muslim soldiers in recent years, accusing them of being Islamists, without necessarily having any proof.
Move to get rid of longer holiday weekends The Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) has proposed holding nine of the 12 national holidays on a Friday or a Monday in an attempt to increase production by losing as few working days as possible. The only national holidays that would be held on the actual date would be New
Year's Day, The Day of Spanishness (October 12th, Columbus Day in the US) and Christmas Day. In a report, the CEOE said puentes (long weekends) wasted a lot of production resources. For example, this week October 12th falls on Wednesday which means many businesses will shut down either on
Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday to make a long weekend out of it. There are also several that are too close together – the Day of the Constitution on December 6th followed by the Day of the Immaculate Conception on the 8th. This means that this year, the long weekend would
start on Tuesday, December 6th and end on Sunday, December 11th. The CEOE report said “we must recover the culture of making an effort because without effort there are no results and this proposal would be one of the main keys to confront the current economic crisis”.

Cash fines on the way out the traffic authority (DGt) has started a pilot project in oviedo, asturias and leon capital that will eventually eliminate cash as a means of paying traffic fines or for other services such as renewing driving licences. a DGt spokesman said payment by credit card online, by phone to 060 or on the spot would eliminate long queues at trafico offices, and save money by reducing staff working hours and the number of offices throughout Spain if the pilot project was a success. Hospitals ordered to close the regional government has ordered all hospitals to close for at least five days during what remains of this year and successive years and has already notified the hospitals of the dates chosen to ensure that the closures do not overlap in the same area. the Catalan health service is deeply in the red and has already suffered a series of drastic cuts to reduce duplication of services and over-staffing. Doctors and nurses have warned of strikes if the cuts continue.

Children receive thyroid tests
Environment Minister Nick Smith told a news briefing on Monday that the oil leaking from a stranded cargo ship off New Zealand has become the country's worst maritime environmental disaster. He was speaking during a visit to the port of Tauranga, opposite the Astrolabe Reef where the Rena a 775ft container ship ran aground last Wednesday. A Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) spokesman said up to 300 tonnes of oil may have leaked out of a total of 1,700 tonnes on board. Clumps of heavy oil have been washing up on
the beaches of Mt Maunganui and the nearby community of Papamoa next to Tauranga port, on New Zealand's North Island. Officials have closed the affected beaches and nearby residents been told to stay away from the shore and not touch the heavy globs of oil. About 200 people are involved in the salvage operation, while 300 military personnel are
on stand-by to clean up beaches. MNZ head Catherine Taylor said containing the oil would be difficult, given the Rena's position on the reef and the weather battering the region. Swells of up to four metres are making the use of dispersants on the oil difficult. She said once the weather has calmed
enough to resume transferring the oil off the ship, the containers will be removed and then the Rena can be moved off the reef. The owners of the ship, Greece-based Costamare Inc, have not given an explanation for the grounding, but said they were "co-operating fully with local authorities" to minimise any damage.
Tax rise to Burma 'to grant prisoner protect resources amnesty' An amnesty is to be granted to more than 6,300 prisoners, state-controlled media announced on Monday – but it was not specified how many of those freed would be political detainees. The news came hours after Burma's new human rights body called for the release of "prisoners of conscience" who did not threaten state stability. On Monday the US said if Burma showed concrete
progress on issues like political prisoners, it would respond. Western nations currently impose sanctions on Burma, and one of the key reasons is political prisoners. Thought to number more than 2,000, they include journalists, pro-democracy activists, government critics, monks involved in antigovernment protests in 2007 and members of Burma's ethnic groups fighting for greater autonomy.
Health workers have begun checking more than 300,000 children living near the Fukushima nuclear plant after parents expressed concern about a link between thyroid abnormalities and radiation, citing reports of a rise after Chernobyl in 1986. The tests began after an unofficial survey which found that 10 out of 130 children evacuated from Fukushima had hormonal and other irregularities in the thyroid glands, but those who conducted the survey said they could not establish a link between the irregularities and the country’s nuclear crisis. Smugglers set bees on police Suspected smugglers let loose bees on Turkish police officers searching for contraband cigarettes in a lorry carrying bee hives, according to a local news agency report. They released the swarm after 15 officers acting on a tip-off stopped the lorry in the southern city of Adana. No information has been released about the police officers' condition. Police in beekeeping gear later found some 32,500 packs of contraband cigarettes and arrested the lorry driver and two beekeepers who were travelling with the hives. TuNiSiA

China's State Council has announced that a tax on oil and natural gas sales will be expanded to the entire country as of 1st November, to try and reduce consumption. The tax will be 5-10% of sales, the State Council said on Monday. A 5% experimental resource tax was introduced in the western province of Xinjiang in July last year, with revenues going to the local
government. The move is an attempt to reduce the fast-growing nation's dependency on resources, but will also boost revenues for provincial governments.
Police arrested dozens of islamists as they attempted to attack a TV station which had shown the award-winning Frenchiranian film Persepolis. Based on an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, it depicts the last days of the Shah and iran's 1979 islamic revolution. Officials said the activists had tried to set Nessma TV station alight after it broadcast the film last Friday, angered by fantasy scenes in which God is shown talking to a young girl – which they deem to be blasphemous.

Politicians now on Wall Street band wagon After starting on September 17th as a small-scale protest based around Wall Street in Manhattan, New York, “Occupy Wall Street” has now become large enough to force its way into the national political debate. Announcing its support for the movement, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee wrote on Twitter: "Protesters are assembling in New York and around the country to let billionaires, big oil and big bankers know that we're
not going to let the richest one percent force draconian economic policies and massive cuts to crucial programs on Main Street Americans." Meanwhile, the Republicans' Tea Party Express called comparisons between itself and the protests “insulting”. In a fundraising email to supporters, it said: "The only commonality that we have is that we are both opposed to the bailouts of Wall Street – and that is it." Paul Ryan, a leading
House Republican, said he did not disparage anyone who "protests their government for better government," but called the anti-establishment rhetoric "troubling". On Monday, organisers of the "leaderless resistance movement" called for a "Kids Speak Out" day, as students have the day off for Columbus Day. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said protesters would be allowed to stay indefinitely in Zuccotti Park, as long as they obey the city's laws.
Chilean tribe mourns Colombus Day The anniversary of Colombus's first landfall on October 12th, 1492, is a public holiday in Chile and across the Americas but for indigenous groups such as the Mapuche it is a day of mourning. Mapuche leader Manuel Diaz told the Spanish news agency Efe: "It signifies the arrival of the Spanish
usurpers and all they brought with them, colonialism and imperialism." Dressed in traditional costumes and carrying flags, the Mapuche activists marched peacefully through the centre of Santiago on Monday, accompanied by
thousands of nonMapuche supporters. They demanded the return of ancestral territories in southern Chile currently owned by farmers and forestry companies, and called for the release of Mapuche "political prisoners" jailed for their role in land occupations.

Woman murdered on her way to work
COSTA LOOKING FOR

Grandmother Sally Hodkin, 59, died after being stabbed in the neck with a butchers knife in Bexleyheath, south London – just a few minutes walk away from where she lived with her husband, Paul. Unemployed Nicola Edgington, 31, has been charged with her murder and the attempted murder
of another woman of 21. She appeared at Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning. Mrs Hodkin’s husband went to the spot where she had been killed with seven family members to lay flowers, and many neighbours paid tribute to her saying: “ There’s no kinder, sweeter woman you
could hope to meet. Her family have been robbed.” It is believed that she has two grown-up sons and worked for a law firm, Cunningham Blake, whose answerphone was saying that they were closed for business due to a bereavement. It was believed that Mrs Hodkin was on her way to work when she was attacked.

London’s leaning tower the leaning tower of Piza isn’t the only tower with a list. it has been discovered that London’s tower that house Big Ben has continued to lean since 2003 when it was first noticed. the tower is causing concern to surveyors who say that it is now 1ft 5 ins and is leaning to a north-west angle of 0.26 degrees. the problem is thought to have been caused by decades of underground works being carried out including the tunnels for the Jubilee line tube. the 315 foot high tower could eventually topple over if the problem isn’t corrected. But it could take 4,000 years for this to happen at it’s current rate of leaning. Britsh science
Expedition going to Antarctica A team of British scientists will be travelling to Antarctica later this month to study if there is life under the three-kilometre-deep pack ice. they are hoping to find microscopic life forms that they believe have been trapped in an under-ice lake for more than a million years which could explain how life above the ice has evolved. the team will prepare the site this year prior to returning in 2012 to drill their first bore hole through the ice. they will use a special hot-water drill to reach the lake. A five-metre-long probe will collect 24 water samples at different depths and then take a three-metre core from the sediment. Principal investigator Professor Martin siegert said: "For 15 years we've been planning to explore this hidden world. it's only now that we have the expertise and technology to drill through Antarctica's thickest ice and collect samples without contaminating this untouched and pristine environment." Lake ellsworth, which is on the West Antarctic ice sheet, is likely to be the first of the continent's 387 known sub-glacial lakes to be sampled. the expedition is being funded by the natural environment research council.

West Ham lose out The deal for West Ham Football Club and Newham Council to take over the Olympic Stadium once the 2012 games are over has collapsed. The stadium may be let out on short leases and some £35 million of public money has now had to be set aside for converting the stadium following the games. The trouble started when both Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient clubs put in bids, but both included the removal of the running track whereas the West Ham bid agreed to keep the track – so that London could once again put in a bid for the 2017 Athletics Championships. There has been an anonymous complaint to the European Commission, claiming that the £40m being provided by Newham Council to West Ham represented "state aid". The football club had wanted to convert the £537m stadium into a 60,000-capacity venue for football, athletics, concerts and community use.

Catalan leader Rota to host NATO insults workers missile shield unit Criticism from a Catalan politician has united all the parties represented in the Junta de Andalucia, who are currently working on a document to condemn Josep Antoni Duran y Lleida for saying workers are spending a subsidy once known as PER in their local bars. In the document, the Junta accuses Sr Duran, who is running for the Catalan nationalist party Convergencia y Union in the November 20th election, of “ignorance. The PER is not a subsidy but a programme of works in rural towns so that agricultural workers can make up enough hours to be eligible for dole. The document also points out that the programme is no longer known as PER, but
Prime Minister JosĂŠ Luis RodrĂguez announced at NATO headquarters in Brussels last week that the naval base at Rota in CĂĄdiz province has been selected as the alliance's main operating centre for the sea-based component of its anti-missile shield.
as Profea (Programme to develop agricultural employment). Sr Duran's exact words were that “while Catalan agricultural workers cannot collect fruit because of the low prices, in other parts of Spain people receive a PER from our taxes to spend the morning or the whole day in the town's bar. Sr Duran later said he was not
attacking the people of Andalucia but their government which is “mismanaging aid money. A UGT union spokesman pointed out that 63 per cent of the 262,000 workers in the Profea programme are women aged 45 and over who are not likely to spend their days in a bar.
As the result of secret negotiations lasting several months, the United States will deploy 1,100 military personnel and 100 civilians to Rota to operate the defence system against ballistic missiles from as far away as Iran and North
Korea. The four vessels assigned to missile shield duties will be the first US Navy ships to have their permanent base in Spain. US ships that currently
make port call visits to Rota are based in Italy. It is expected that the deployment will create 300 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs along the Bay of CĂĄdiz.

Four detained in mummified body case Three people have been detained – one in Mijas and three in Finland – in connection with the disappearance and death of a 19-year-old Finnish girl who arrived on the Costa del Sol in June to spend a holiday with two friends. The girl's parents reported her missing when she did not return from holiday, unaware that the girl herself had reported her two friends to the Guardia Civil for threatening her after she refused to carry drugs back to Finland. Her two friends returned to Finland via Ireland. The third person detained in Finland is the mother of one of the two friends who had been under investigation there for suspected drug dealing. Search widened for missing children Police have extended the search for a six-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother to the Guadalquivir river. The two children disappeared last Saturday from the Cruz Conde park in Córdoba while in their father's care. On Monday, police launches began searching the area near the urbanisation where their father's family have a finca. Police have reconstructed the children's journey from Huelva, where they live with their mother, to Córdoba, where they were picked up by their father, José Breton. Witnesses said they had seen the father in the park on Saturday but

in Mijas found a mummified body with some limbs missing, wrapped in a sleeping bag hidden under leaves near the house where the girl and her friends had stayed on the outskirts of the town. The missing parts were found later in a barrel near a swimming pool which is under construction at the house, which is occupied by the partner of the woman detained in Finland. He has been arrested as an accessory after the fact. Two minors who were living in the house with him have been taken into care. DNA tests are being carried out to confirm that the mummified body belongs to the girl, as the police suspect.
The Junta de andalucia’s justice department has received 45 applications for permits to open private smokers’ clubs so far this year, up from one last year and none the two previous years. Cadiz leads the field with 11 applications, followed by Malaga with nine. More than 360 private smokers’ clubs have opened around the country since the first anti-smoking law came into effect in 2006, but andalucia only joined the trend after the tougher law came into effect in January last year. Lucky couple go public Readers’ holiday deals continue in e News The lucky British couple who scooped the £101 EuroMillions jackpot have revealed what they will spend their money on which includes making their friends millionaires too.
At The News we are proud to announce that, on top of the wonderful cruise deals we have been able to offer our readers, we now have the first of our winter Ski Deals.
At a press conference, prizewinners Dave and Angela Dawes, pictured right, of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, said that they will purchase a house in Chelsea close to the ground of the football team Mr Dawes, 47, a shift supervisor at Premier Foods, supports. Angela Dawes, 43, who is a volunteer for the British Heart Foundation, told reporters that her father wanted a 1926 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost even though he is unable to drive. A new diamond engagement ring and a house in Portugal near to where Mrs Dawes' parents live are also on their wish list. The couple plan to splash out on a trip to Las Vegas and a skiing holiday
in Switzerland coming months.

the
After winning the jackpot, the Dawes said that they drew up a list of 15-20 people to whom they wanted to give some of the money. They are also deciding which charities to support. The couple, who made a life-changing decision to go public, won the UK's third largest lottery prize and are now ranked among the richest in the UK.
The Dawes are following in the footsteps of Scottish EuroMillions winners Colin and Chris Weir, who were criticised for going public with their massive £161m win in July. At the moment, the unmarried couple, who have been together for four years, live in a modest one bedroom flat. Angela said that she had changed her last name to Dawes off her own bat because they couldn't afford to get married straight away.
Our first Ski Deal has flights from Malaga to Geneva and your holiday departs on Saturday December 3rd. You will be staying at the Hotel les Grandes Rousses in Alpe d’Huez in France. The price of only £299 per person includes seven nights hotel accomodation in a shared occupancy twin room with twin or double beds, plus a hot and cold breakfast buffet selection throughout your stay, your flights and transfers and a
champagne reception on arrival. But that’s not all. The price also includes ski lessons in English with a qualified instructor of the Ecole du Ski Francais. There really isn’t another deal like it on the market. On top of all this, if you want to upgrade your stay, for an additional £99 per person you add a packed lunch and a threecourse evening meal with wine for every day of your stay! Although this date seems early in the season, because of the
high altitude of the resort you are guaranteed snow (unlike in the Sierra Nevada) and the slopes will not be too crowded. The resort of Alpe d’Huez is south facing so benefits from both sun and snow. The hotel is ski-in, ski-out and has its own ski shop plus a bar, restaurant, swimming pool and sauna. In addition, the resort has lots of other facilities including its own ice rink, tobogganing, leisure centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, restaurants and cafés. Memo from

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Mind boggling
I
f one of the latest polls is anything to go by, the Partido Popular stands to win 193 seats in the November 20th election and the Socialists a paltry 122 – the best results for the PP since it was founded in 1989 and the worst for the Socialists since the first post-Franco election in 1977.
A
ll polls point to a majority for the PP but such a huge one is mind boggling. The good news is that the PP will be able to attempt much needed reforms such as limiting the powers of the autonomous regions, which a majority of Spaniards favour. And the regional governments might not complain too much if they are relieved of the responsibility for health and education – two areas where their performance has been patchy as well as a drain on their resources.
T
he PP also intends to slim down the public sector, merging some ministries and eliminating a lot of superfluous jobs. The Socialists wouldn’t fight that because their candidate is talking along similar lines.
T
Islam’s “dirty” animals Gonzalez will step back into the ring to help him.
T
hen we have the Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left). Its leader, coordinator or whatever he calls himself – Cayo Lara – hopes to pick up a lot of the votes of the disillusioned left wing of the Socialist Party. He announced earlier this week that 12 smaller parties will be running with the IU. They’re all so small that nobody’s ever heard of them outside their regions or provinces.
T
hey’re mainly greens but we also have Initiative for El Hierro, the smallest island in the Canaries – currently under volcanic threat – and the Democratic and Social Party of Ceuta. It will be interesting to see how many votes they get for him.
A
nd who do we have to blame for all this? Zapatero, of course. His defenders will say that the worldwide economic crisis caused all his troubles and this is true to a certain extent. However, he persisted in denying the existence of a crisis in the months leading up to the March 2008 general election so as not to lose votes and even called Rajoy a traitor for daring to say that there was one.
he bad news is that the PP would be able to do anything it wants and a lot of people on the Right would demand the repeal of certain Socialist laws – the quickie divorce, the abortion law and the historical memory law spring to mind. However, Mariano Rajoy has quietly moved the party more towards the centre in recent years and hopefully the party faithful will be so busy wallowing in such glorious election results that they’ll let him get on with it.
H
A
T
ny tinkering with “progressive” laws could lead to much mischief making on the Left. If the Socialists lose the election as spectacularly as expected, anything could happen. Zapatero's allround inadequacy has cast such a pall over the progressive wing of the Socialist Party, of which he is the most prominent member, that it might never recover – not in the foreseeable future at least.
B
ut who else is there? Most of the older, less hot-headed and more pragmatic Socialists have already said they intend to retire from politics, which leaves Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba who, it must be said, was a very brave man when he accepted the party’s nomination as its candidate. It remains to be seen if he will have the guts to take on the Herculean task of putting the party back together again. Perhaps former prime minister Felipe
e then had to turn round and admit there was a crisis and only took steps to do something about it in May this year, and only under pressure from the EU and the financial markets. It was a case of too little, too late and we’ll only find out how bankrupt the country is after the election. he Apple webpage now opens with a photo of Steve Jobs with his birth and death dates – a simple homage in black and white to a man who is mourned the world over. Some bright spark has taken the format and posted on the net this photo of Zapatero, which says it all.
T
here is a disturbing story coming out of the Catalonian city of Lérida involving religion and pets. For the past few weeks the residents of the working class neighbourhoods of Cappont and La Bordeta, have complained to authorities that someone is poisoning their dogs. More than 15 animals have died after eating or smelling venom left out in the streets, which has upset the residents and led to demands that police immediately investigate this sad and unfortunate situation.
S
ome pet owners say they do have their suspicions. They believe that members of a highly concentrated Muslim community may be responsible. Although the local press has given ample coverage to the dog poisonings, Soeren Kern, an analyst with the Stategic Studies Group – the conservative think-tank closely affiliated with the Partido Popular (PP) and to former Prime Minister José María Aznar – has denounced the situation in a piece for the Hudson New York international affairs website, which focuses on human rights and terrorism.
K
ern writes that according to Islamic teachings, dogs are viewed as “unclean” animals. Neighbours have also complained that they sometimes have been harassed by Muslim residents when they go out for the night walks, he says.
I
n July, two Muslim groups asked the Lérida city council for an ordinance to keep dogs, including seeing-eye canines, off the buses and away from neighbourhoods where Muslims live. According to the alertadigital online newspaper, the associations consider dogs “unpure animals,” and believe that if the city council doesn’t act in favour it would be an infringement on the freedom to practise their own religion.
I
n La Bordeta, frustrated citizens, fed up with inaction by the police, have been forming their own undercover patrols to determine who is leaving out the poison and committing other acts of vandalism. City leaders have asked them to allow the local and Catalan regional police to do their jobs, but the citizens groups say all they are doing is patrolling and taking photographs of anyone who may appear suspicious.
A
bout 30,000 Muslims live in Lérida, accounting for 20 per cent of the city’s population. This is the same place where government officials last December banned the burqa head covering for all women, becoming the first municipality in Spain to do so.
U
nfortunately, the religious tensions may appear to be heightening in Lérida. In September 2010, opposition grew against a request by a Muslim association to build a mosque in the centre of town. The place of worship was to be jointly financed by Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Mourad Al-Boudouhi, president of the Watani Association for Liberty and Justice, has given the mayor a document demanding that the city set apart some land for his mosque.
W
hether members of the Muslim community are actually responsible for the rash of animal poisonings in Lérida is still unclear. Nevertheless, this type of “jihad” on dogs must not be tolerated by any local government. While there are strict laws against cruelty to animals in Spain, sometimes they are not enforced at local level. The Brusselsbased Eurogroup for Animals is pushing the European Commission to adopt a region-wide law to ensure that the health and welfare of all animals are protected.
I
n Madrid, there has been a seasonal rash of dog poisonings over the past few years. In the southern district of Valdebernardo, at least a dozen dogs were poisoned earlier this spring. On October 7th, the Madrid city council began making excellent headway by agreeing to study a bill aimed at toughening the 1990 animal protection law.
T
hose caught mistreating any type of animal could now face fines of up to €30,000 as well as criminal charges. Fines of up to €1,500 will be imposed on anyone caught feeding pigeons or leaving food out for stray cats and dogs. It is a much welcomed step in the right direction.

How often have we seen or heard this old adage? Yet in Calahonda, the saying was disproved when the Age Care Association Charity Shop held its annual fashion show. Whole outfits, some costing as little as 15 euros for a complete ensemble of dress, shoes and handbag, were modeled by members of the Age Care shop staff and later sold to raise funds for the Association. A total of 549 euros was acquired on the day. Following an excellent buffet, the ‘audience’ was treated to a stunning parade of outfit after outfit. Amazingly, some well-known designer clothes such as Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Usher, Gerry Weber and numerous others, were sold at a fraction of their high street prices.
Later, a raffle raised the magnificent total of 250 euros which will also help the Age Care Association to assist the elderly on the Costa del Sol. Beverley Morland, who manages the Age Care shop in the El Zoco Shopping Centre, Calahonda, would like to thank all who attended the function and those whose generous donations made everything possible. She and her staff look forward to seeing old friends, and those who, prior to the fashion show, were unfamiliar with all there is on offer in the shop, very soon. Located beneath the Tai Chi Restaurant, the shop is open from 10 am until 4 pm Monday to Friday and from 10 am to 2 pm each Saturday.

WARNING TO ALL POOL OWNERS PUBLIC OR PRIVATE The new Spanish pool laws came into force on the 1st of October 2008. Many people seem to be unsure of the new law and different types of pool security systems that meet the new legislation. The objective of this law is to prevent people and especially children from being injured sometimes fatally in swimming pools. All pools must be protected by a security system compliant with the new legislation. All pool owners must ensure they are using at least one of the approved safety devices (secure fencing, immersion alarms, reinforced pool covers, area /perimeter alarms). DLS Fabrications can recommend that secure fencing is the best option as it is totally maintenance free. The laws do not demand that any pool with less that 200sqm needs the
fencing, but if an accident should occur this will still invalidate any medical insurance and may incur a minimum fine of €45.000 For more information contact Lloyd on 952590651 / 649696453 or e.mail him for details at dlsfabrications@gmail.com

Kiosks and unlicenced stalls to go The Department of Public Areas of the Mijas Town Hall and Municipal Operative Services started last week to remove from the streets of the municipality kiosks and stalls that do not have the proper municipal licence or that have been leased or are not being used. The Ayuntamiento has said: “Most of these sale points are an obstacle for pedestrian daily life, as well as being a commercial
activity that is not being regulated by the tax administration nor paying into the Social Security system. Some cases infringe the social character in which they were granted in the first place years ago by the Town Hall, and were leased, which is totally illegal according to the present municipal rules and regulations.” The department of Public Areas has sent
notifications to all the supposed owners of the kiosks and stalls, and these will have a period of 15 days before their removal. “We are going to remove all the stalls and kiosks that are not regulated” assured councillor Juan Carlos Navarros. “These will be taken to the warehouse of the Operative Services of La Cala of Mijas Costa, where the owners will be able to pick up their belongings and merchandise.”
Despite the municipal action being taken, the government team is still prepared to allow commercial activity from kiosks, “but with permanent structures, for example made of brick, and following a determined design”. “We are a touristic municipality and we have to look after our image as a village”, pointed out councillor Juan Carlos Gonzalez.

Gibraltar
News Spain still wants New cruise terminal plans unveiled Gibraltar At the UN Fourth Committee held last week Spain made it clear that their claims on Gibraltar’s sovereignty remains a priority with them, stating that territorial principle and not self-determination applies and that the search for a solution carries on via the United Nations. Former Trilateral Forum negotiator and UN Ambassador Juan Pablo de Laiglesia said that: “For Spain the solution entails a restitution of the territory, the one transferred by the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, as well as the land that was later occupied by the United Kingdom without any legal basis.” He added however that Spain would continue with talks to
“resolve issues of local cooperation for the welfare and economic development of the inhabitants of the Campo and Gibraltar” and that it was for the UK as administering power to negotiate with Spain but that Gibraltar could have a voice within that framework. He insisted that there should be a case-by-case approach and said that the interests of the population were a separate issue which must be taken into account. At the last referendum held with the people of Gibraltar there was an overwhelming majority of votes to stay British.
On the Rock without a car From this Sunday, 16th October the annual In Town Without My Car Week kicks off with the Family Cycle Rally starting from Casemates Square at 11am (registration starts at 10am) and entry is free. The rally will travel along Main Street to Rosia Boulevard and as far as Cumberland Terraces returning by way of Queensway, Reclamation Road toward Morrisons and back to Ocean Village where they will be given free refreshments after all their 4.7km of exertions on Hart Island. All participants will receive a certificate for joining in. The In Town Without My Car Campaign aims to get people out of their cars for
a week and walking, on the buses or cycling. A spokesperson said that with many people saying that they are worried about having to cycle up steep hills, the rally is a great way to show them that they can get from their homes into the centre of town coming across only minor hills and, from the safety aspect of not cycling in car crowded street, the rally is a great way for the whole family to get out and about for the day in a safe and supervised environment. There will also be a discussion held at Sacarello’s Coffee House next Wednesday , October 19th, at 7.30pm.
Last week Deputy Chief Minister Joe Holliday unveiled major plans to refurbish and extend the Rock’s International Cruise Terminal from 1200m2 to 2000m2 to handle larger ships and the numbers of passengers they carry. Cruise operators will have a say in the internal works in respect of passenger comfort and facilities plus the security and efficiency of the running of the terminal. The plans will include provisions for the new trend in “hop-on, hopoff” style cruising where passengers will be able to board and leave ships at many destinations instead of having to follow the rather inflexible itineraries of the past. During phase 1 of the building works, the extension to the existing terminal and the adjacent ex-Ice Box buildings will be demolished. Then refurbishment and remodelling works will start that will include an expanded arrivals hall to include a counter for the Gibraltar Tourist Board and the Security and Immigration Control facilities will be doubled in size to serve cruise ships
docked on both sides of the terminal. There will also be a new eating area for passengers to relax in and a disabled passenger lift. “The Cruise Terminal is a major entry point for visitors to Gibraltar and has handled around 2,500 cruise ship calls and three million passengers since it opened on 17th July 1997,” Mr Holliday said. “It has served Gibraltar extremely well over the years and has received considerable praise for its attractive and welcoming ambience. Its quality has also been recognised by the award of a number of international accolades, including that of Most Efficient Terminal Operator, awarded by Dreamworld Cruise Destinations in 2003 and again in 2008. However, the increasing average number of passengers per ship has risen 85%, from 976 in 1996 to 1,807 in 2012. This means that over a 15 year period, ships have effectively doubled in size and the cruise terminal is being refurbished and extended to be able to handle these vessels more efficiently and provide a more contemporary look and feel.”
Cruise ship arrivals This week sees a few of the big cruise ships arriving at the Port of Gibraltar. Thursday 20th sees the arrival of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth at 13.30 and departure at 6pm plus MSC Orchestra at 2.30 leaving at 7pm. Saturday has Seabream Yacht Club’s Seabream II arriving at 8am
and leaving at 1pm plus Cruise and Maritime Voyages Marco Polo also arriving at 8am and leaving at 4pm. For all up-to-date port information on which ships are arriving at Gibraltar, go to www. gibraltar port.com/schedules then click on 2011 for times.

Architecture Festival in Barcelona World Architecture Festival (WAF), the world’s largest, live, inclusive and interactive global architecture event, is returning to Barcelona for its fourth successive year from 2nd to 4th November 2011 at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB), and features the world’s biggest architectural contest – The World Architectural Festival Awards. WAF is a key event in the global architectural calendar and has attracted more than 5,000 delegates from around the world.
The WAF Awards will again be at the heart of the Festival with an Estonian theatre made of straw, a soccer school in Soweto, a tree hotel in Sweden, a bamboo office in India and a moving gallery in New York among the 281 projects that have been announced in the WAF Awards shortlist. Projects entered this year, against a backdrop of a challenging economic climate, highlight the continuing need for innovative buildings that use materials and construction techniques which are sympathetic to
practical, aesthetic and economical factors. Buildings designed by renowned architects such as Zaha Hadid and Foster + Partners feature among buildings by smaller, lesser known practices. Each practice will compete as equals when presenting their designs live to international judging panels and Festival delegates. A distinguished Super Jury, headed up in 2011 by Michael Sorkin, principal of Michael Sorkin Studio New York, will unite for the Festival finale and cast

By Paul WS Anderson starring Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich. There have been dozens of feature films based on the Alexander Dumas novel and many of us will have fond memories of the 1973 version, starring Michael York and Oliver Reed. All have been swashbuckling high adventure, sort of loosely based on events that might have been feasible back in the 17th century. But this latest version comes straight out of the box marked Pirates of the Caribbean – camp as Christmas, fantasy world
madness. The opening scenes are set in Venice where Athos (Macfadyen) appears from the canal at the side of The Doge's Palace in some waterproof pre-Bond assassin’s gear, and promptly engages in a battle with a guard with the sort of weapon undreamed of by Dumas. He meets up with Aramis (Luke Evans), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and action woman Milady de Winter (Jovovich), who are all there to steal Leonardo da Vinci's blueprint for the first airship. Eh? There's a
homage to a Mission Impossible-style booby trap involving wires instead of lasers and off they race, triumphant. Until they discover that Milady has double crossed them and handed the plans to the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom).
discovers a sad troop sidelined by the evil Cardinal Richelieu ( Christoph Waltz), but luckily he discovers that there is a plot afoot to start a war between France and England and the Musketeers are persuaded to dust off their swords and enter the fray.
A mad start, which smartly switches back to the more famiiliar territory of the classic novel as D'Artagnan arrives in Paris to chase his dream of joining the Musketeers. There he
It's all in 3D, moves along at a cracking pace, there are some great special effects and fabulous costumes, and all in all, it's a family film built on good old-fashioned swashbuckling fun.

licking through my video collection this week I came across one of my favourite movies, that I hadn´t seen for a while – the very underrated “Clay Pigeons”, with Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn. This movie is not to be missed.
J
oaquin Phoenix plays Clay, whose life takes a dark turn after his best friend commits suicide after finding out Clay has been sleeping with his wife, Amanda. Clay, not wanting anybody to find out about him and Amanda, disposes of the body. This leads to a bundle of lies that pile one on top of another and are further complicated by the arrival of a mysterious cowboy named Lester Long. Clay quickly learns some very dark secrets about Lester and is forced into helping him keep those secrets. It's a twisted and backwards ride that at times doesn't even feel real it is so bizarre.

was Dobkin´s debut movie, and in my opinion, his best. “Clay Pigeons” is a film that seems to take itself seriously, but also has a very dark, very grim, sense of humour that pokes its head out in all the wrong places. It comes out in the form of sickening irony and strange satire that plays up the film's dark quirkiness. But these nuances never feel forced and they always seem appropriate for the kind of atmosphere the movie tries to capture. The film stays consistent with its dark mood – it gets intense but there's always a hint of sadistic humour hidden in the seriousness.
T
he film beautifully captures the goofy good-natured attitude of small town life. In fact, the movie itself could be described as goofy and good natured – which is kind of odd considering that I'm describing a film with multiple murders, strange people, and all kinds of bizarre happenings. It has a similar feel to Twin Peaks without the Lynchian flourish.

his little gem of a movie was both written and directed by David Dobkin, who is better known for “Wedding Crashers” and “Old School”. Although Dobkin´s movies are normally very successful comedies , “Clay Pigeons”
he characters are made up mostly of caricatures. Janeane Garofalo plays the part of an FBI agent assigned to investigate the various murders that begin turning up in town. Like most of her characters, she is disillusioned, sarcastic, and continually amazed at the sheer idiocy with which she is surrounded. Vince Vaughn delivers a wonderful performance as the villain, with his endless charm making him the perfect actor to play the part of a serial killer. Personally, I think Vaughn steals the movie!

You seem to be more aware of what is really going on behind the scenes as opposed to those around you right now. This is giving you a distinct advantage over others, enabling you to get yourself into position to gain access and information by ways of observation. This is one of those times when you can see the big picture and all that is going on. Look after your energy levels this week as your increased sensitivity could make you feel emotionally drained. Something has been weighing heavy on your mind, worrying you into the ground; however, a resolution is likely to be found this weekend. This could come out of the blue, so do not allow your mind to be negative, believing that under the current set of circumstances something is not possible. There are those around you that have the power to help you help yourself. Get busy, check the details and do not assume anything right now. Faith and trust are your keywords this week or you can allow yourself to be scared – that is ok as long as you muster your strength and follow through on what you know is the right thing to do. Great things are expected of you but that is not going to happen if you fill your head with excuses. Stand tall this week and collect your harvest, ask others for the payment for your efforts and services – make sure you get what is due to you. You are a busy person, Cancer, so when you get a little respite and relaxation time it can feel unreal and take you a long time to relax down. So much has been happening and still is, however, your daily routine may have quietened down lately. Soon events will happen once again at a fast and furious rate, so use this time to focus on your family and your home, put your creative ideas and talents on display and then make some “you” time. There is a situation that could appear to be a no-win scenario - whichever way you look at something it is as if you are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Perhaps a relationship with someone does not feel quite right but then, on the one hand it is better than it was - you could be faced with ultimatums or having to make some kind of commitment before you are ready. Material and financial issues are looking up. Make sure that you do not get caught up in the same old ruts and routines as your thought processes at the moment could be echoing the same as they did this time last year. Something is different though, the old ways are over and finished. It is time to take hold of your new life with both hands and run with it, adapting to the changing conditions, making sure you accomplish all that you need to get done - you will feel much better for it.
LIBRA
A new chapter is starting in your life, Libra, foundations are being laid that will sustain you for many years to come. You may have difficulty in letting go of some aspects of your past, but bear in mind that we can’t go back and would you really want to? You would have to relive a load of things that would bore you to tears. Life is now not then – as soon as you start to live in the now, your rd September 23 opportunities increase. nd October 22
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
There is so much on your mind and you could feel burdened with certain duties that are required of you. The stage is being set for the next phase in your life, your relationships with others are being defined right now and this can add depth, value and intensity to many conversations. No man is an island and this is not a journey you can take on your own. Just be open, kind and honest and speak from your heart, let others know your real feelings. Be true to yourself, Scorpio, and all will be well.
SAGITTARIUS Within your close relationships you could have been struggling on a certain level, perhaps a new way of relating needs to be found, one where you compromise on certain issues. There are those around you who also are giving you a lot of support right now and when people have your back it has a comforting feeling. By the weekend breakthroughs should occur and a new nd November 22 December 21st level or harmony fills your personal life.
CAPRICORN This is your time to shine brightly in the eyes of others, to put your creative ideas to work. You need to be the one to initiate all the action this week and follow things through. So get to work and do not allow yourself to hold onto things out of fear that they could be taken away or broken, as it is very difficult to get anything done with that mindset. Using your natural ability of nd December 22 forethought - make sure you are prepared for the near future. th January 19

February 19th March 20th
Your ruler Uranus has been making an angle of stress to the planet of transformation, Pluto. This is set to continue on and off all year, however, it can help you to make the necessary adjustments to ensure that you are moving in the right direction for your higher self. When things need adjusting or changing in your life, you will feel it so intensely that you will gladly make sure you rise to the moment. Hurdles remove themselves quickly.
Slow down, Pisces, and take the time to get in tune with what is happening. Usually for you insights and awareness come naturally, however, a communication with a close relation could have knocked you sideways lately, so it is all about finding your centre once again. Then all you need to do once you have clarity again is take the action to ensure strong communication exists with that person. You will find yourself feeling stronger and stronger because of it.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
These can be added to accompany loads of recipes and they’re brilliant comfort food to boot – one recipe to try now and keep for later on in the year when it’s cold and horrid outside.
Creamy au Gratin potatoes Ingredients:
( serves 4)
● 4 russet potatoes, sliced into 1/4 inch slices ● 1 onion, sliced into rings ● salt and pepper to taste ● 45 gr butter ● 25 gr plain flour ● 3 gr salt ● 475 ml milk ● 170 gr grated Cheddar cheese
Directions Preheat oven to 200º C. Butter a 2-pint casserole dish. Layer 1/2 of the potatoes into bottom of the prepared casserole dish. Top with the onion slices, and add the remaining potatoes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. In a medium-size saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Mix in the flour and salt, and stir constantly with a whisk for one minute.
Stir in milk then cook until the mixture has thickened. Stir in the grated cheese all at once, and continue stirring until melted, about 30 to 60 seconds. Pour the cheese mixture over the potatoes, and cover the dish with aluminum foil. Bake for 1 1/2 hours in the preheated oven. STRICTLY NOT THE WORST DANCER OF THE NIGHT
As Edwina gets voted off.... ... who will be the next to bear the brunt of the voters? Last Sunday saw the first of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing contenders leave the show. Edwina Curry, game bird that she is – despite her 80’s debacle about eggs – was certainly not the worst of the dancers, giving a rather fine attempt for the first time at the foxtrot. Lulu kept most of her steps where they should be this week after pretty much totally forgetting what she was supposed to be doing
during her first dance. However, as it was the first week of the show, no-one got voted off so she was lucky. On the other hand Nancy Dell ‘Olio totally forgot her steps and it seemed as though partner Anton Du Beck hasn’t yet got over being paired with Anne Widdecombe last year and was taking the whole thing as a joke. Obviously believing he is the most important part of the
partnership, he pulled faces at the cameras trying to be funny all the way through, while poor old Nancy got in a real mess. Researchers at the Royal Holloway College have been finding out why Strictly has been such a well-loved show and the findings have come up with the fact that the show follows much loved and oldfashioned guidelines. The male dancers take charge with the women willingly
following them. Women said that they liked the strong male dancers and looking at the beautiful sequinned dresses of the ladies. Study author Dr Vicki Harman, from the department of sociology at Royal Holloway, said: "In ballroom dancing it is the man that leads the woman. It is all about the woman looking attractive and being shown off by her male partner. This mimics traditional gender
stereotypes of a powerful male and an attractive but less assertive female. In everyday society these stereotypes are considered very dated yet they continue to be acted out on the dance floor. In the meantime the world is watching Russell Grant who appears to be having an absolute ball learning to dance, throwing his whole self into it – and, amazingly, even Craig Revell Horwood likes him!

Steve McCartney weds for More going out Jobs the third time on film Rumours are rife that Sony Pictures are about to buy the rights of the official biography, named simply “Steve Jobs” by former Time Magazine managing editor Walter Isaacson to make a biopic film about Apple’s top man Steve Jobs who died last week of pancreatic cancer aged just 56. The book’s release date is being rushed forward to October 24th and Amazon’s pre-orders have already made the book a bestseller. It is based on over 40 interviews with the Apple co-founder as well as interviews with more than 100 family members, friends, competitors and colleagues. Walter Isaacson has previously written biographies on Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger and Benjamin Franklin. Mark Gordon, who has worked on films such as Speed and Saving Private Ryan, will produce the movie version for Sony. It will be the first film to tell Mr Jobs' story on the big screen although a TV docudrama, Pirates Of Silicon Valley, was broadcast in 1999, starring ER's Noah Wyle as Steve Jobs.
Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, 69, married his American heiress girlfriend Nancy Shevell in a private ceremony at central London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall on Sunday (also, incidentally, the day that John Lennon would have turned 71 had he not been killed). acrimonious divorce in 2008. The wedding was a small affair – unlike when he married Heather Mills at a castle in Ireland– and was attended by Ringo Starr who wished the couple “peace and love” plus the widow of Beatle George Harrison accompanied by her son Dhani. The post nuptials party was held at Paul’s home, the same one that he bought in 1965, just around the corner from Abbey Road studios in London.
Partygoers included Jools Holland, Texan songstress Sharleen Spiteri, artist Tracy Emin and guitarist Jeff Beck. ExRolling Stone Ronnie Wood said that he wished the couple “a very happy future”, while model Twiggy said: “We are all very, very happy. We love them both to bits. She’s lovely.” Paul’s daughter Stella McCartney designed the bride’s dress that was an elegant knee length with long sleeves and a V neckline.

Sunbeds limited to Remodel Your Home for Safer over 18s California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill on Sunday to make his state the first one in the United States to ban the use of sunbeds for anyone under the age of 18. It will come into effect on January 1st 2012. State senator Ted Lieu, who sponsored the bill, said: "If everyone knew the true dangers of tanning beds, they'd be shocked. Skin cancer is a rising epidemic and the leading cause of cancer death for women between 25 and 29." In 2009, the World Health Organisation's

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that sunbeds are "carcinogenic to humans" and moved them into its highest cancer risk category. It made its decision following a review of research which concluded that the risk of melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – was increased by 75% in people who started using sunbeds regularly before the age of 30. The US Indoor Tanning Association told the Associated Press that under 18s made up between 5% to 10% of its customers and the new law would hurt businesses. England and Wales introduced a ban on the use of sunbeds for under 18s in April 2011, following a similar ban in Scotland. Brazil has banned the use of sunbeds completely.

Home remodelling projects may become a hobby during your retirement years but quite often it becomes a necessity, owing to changing physical needs. If you've lived in the same house for years, chances are you'll want to stay put during retirement so you can enjoy all of the memories you've had there. But it may be time to give your home a makeover. When undertaking a home remodelling project, it's a good idea to consider challenges you may face as you grow older. It's precisely at this time in our lives that our homes grow less safe: stairs present a new challenge; lighting may become inadequate; narrow hallways become more difficult to navigate. Making simple adjustments to your house

during remodelling is relatively easy and can enable you to continue living in your home, safely, for years to come. Liberty Seguros has provided the following room-by-room suggestions to keep in mind when making modifications in your home: In your bathroom •Motion-sensing taps make washing easier if you have arthritis. •Sinks and vanities should be placed at a height that's comfortable for you. •Smooth counter edges can prevent bumps and bruises. •Grab bars in the shower can reduce your risk of falling. •Higher toilets offer greater ease. •Bath and shower chairs add safety and convenience. In your kitchen •You can reduce back strain
with higher countertops. •Under-cabinet lighting brightens countertops, lessening eyestrain. •Pull-down shelving makes it easier to access your pantry. •Slide-out drawers eliminate the need to twist or bend to reach pots and pans. •Elevated dishwashers reduce stooping or bending. •D-shaped cabinet and drawer handles are easier to grasp. •Anti-scald devices reduce the risk of hot water burns. Elsewhere •A master bedroom and bath on the first floor is a necessity for many seniors. •A low or no-threshold entrance to the home adds safety and convenience, especially in bad weather. •Install lever-style door handles throughout your house.
•Brighten lighting in all areas. •Widen doorways to make it easier to move from room to room. •If you are in a wheelchair, angle mirrors downward. •Put in non-slip flooring at the main entryway and seamless flooring throughout the house. •An open floor plan, especially in the kitchen/dining area, can be attractive, as well as easier to walk around. •Add handrails at all steps. A carefully considered approach to remodelling can make your home both more attractive and safer. As the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War approaches, year by year the number of surviving soldiers is sadly diminishing. Editor says: I know times are hard but for Mijas to have tatty things like this flying just looks so sad. Surely they
should be able to get one of the local businesses to sponsor some bright new ones?
Charlie Limon
Otherwise people are going to think it’s not worth investing in Mijas in future.
Estepona the local ornithologist says their nests are being disturbed. I looked at buying a house up there which was paradise in the most picturesqe spot imaginable – except Mon- Fri there’s War of The Worlds going on 750 metres away! You mentioned if I got you a copy of my petition you would help get a campaign going through the paper. Is this still something you can help with? My friend down here, Teresa Fernandez has been battling them for three years now but she is a small voice against the big boys. If you can help I think there’s a chance they can be stopped.
Would it be OK if Teri contacted you directly as she is up to speed on all the town hall officials, lawyers and other parties that have been contacted. I have copied her on this e mail and will give her your number if that’s OK. Editor replies: Hi Charlie, Destroying the countryside and especially the wildlife in the area is unacceptable if they don’t have the proper permissions. Please give my number to your friend and I can let everyone know, especially those that live in the area, how to join the campaign and sign the petition. Even the small people can make a difference.

I’ve received dozens of emails from people asking what the bright ‘star’ is that can be seen rising from the east after sunset.
I am sure that Mijas Ayuntamiento has more pressing issues than replacing the flags outside the town hall in La Cala, but it is nevertheless sad to see such tattered examples on display.
Hope you are well. Last time I visited you we spoke about the problem we have down here in Estepona with a local quarry. They are right on the edge of one of the most beautiful bits of countryside around and also the edge of a Parque Natural. The thing seems to be expanding closer and closer to this area. We believe they are operating without a licence. They are mining stone and have massive machinery hammer drilling and transporting the stone out of the quarry. They start at 7.30 some mornings and pollute with noise and dust all week long. There are eagles nesting up there and

upiter is in opposition and comes its closest to Earth on October 29th when it will be 369 million miles from earth. This coming opposition is the closest that Jupiter will come to the Earth until 2022 so it’s a really good time to take a look at the largest planet in the solar system.
A
t opposition, the Earth passes between the Sun and Jupiter, at which time Jupiter lies opposite the Sun in Earth’s sky. If you could look down upon the solar system at this time, you’d see the Sun, Earth and Jupiter making a straight line in space, with Earth sitting in between the Sun and Jupiter. Because Jupiter is opposite the Sun it rises in the east at sunset, climbs to its highest point in the sky at midnight and sets in the west at sunrise.
J
upiter is a massive planet; its diameter is more than 11 times larger than the diameter of the Earth. You could fit about a 1,000 Earths inside Jupiter. But unlike the Earth, Jupiter is not made of solid rock but instead is a huge ball of mainly hydrogen gas. And where a day lasts 24 hours on Earth a day on Jupiter is only 10 hours long. This rapid spinning has caused it to bulge at the equator and flatten at the poles. Even a small telescope or binoculars will show you the flattening effect of Jupiter.
W
hen you look at Jupiter through a telescope you will notice two dark bands running all the way around the planet east to west. These are caused by violent storms in the upper atmosphere whipping the clouds into a frenzy around the planet with wind speeds of over 200 mph and lighting bolts a thousand times stronger than any ever seen on Earth. No one is completely sure why the bands are different in colour from the rest of the planet and a thousand theories have been written about them and also Jupiter’s mysterious Great Red Spot.
T
he Great Red Spot has been observed for almost 400 years ever since Galileo turned his telescope toward Jupiter in 1608. The spot is a dark brown/reddish coloured oval blemish about 30,000 miles long by 15,000 miles
wide in Jupiter’s southern dark band and appears to be some sort of cyclone storm swirling in an anti-clockwise direction. It moves around the planet in line with the other clouds but what is causing it and why it has remained for so long is a complete mystery.
J
upiter has over 64 ‘moons’ and it was Galileo who first spotted the four largest of them called Callisto, Io, Ganymede and Europa. After observing the movements of these four moons over a succession of nights Galileo published his findings and dared to question the belief that the Earth was not the centre of the Universe but just another planet orbiting around the Sun. He was promptly tried and found guilty of heresy by the Catholic Church and imprisoned for the rest of his life.
W
ith binoculars you can see the four Galilean moons for yourself appearing as tiny points of light in line with Jupiter’s equator. You may see any arrangement of the moons, maybe two on the left and two on the right of Jupiter but if you look again the next night they will have changed position because of the speed with which they orbit the huge planet. Our Moon takes about a month to orbit the Earth but the Galilean moons can orbit Jupiter in a matter of days. Some nights you may see less than four moons because one or more of them may be in front of or behind Jupiter. On other nights it is even possible to see the shadow of a moon as it passes in front of Jupiter’s face. On several occasions I have even witnessed one moon eclipsing another moon.

Local cricket produces another thrilling finish at the Oval
A strange year for Tiger Woods took another bizarre twist on Sunday when a fan was arrested for running toward the seventh green at the USPGA’s Frys.com Open, and tossing a hot dog in Woods' direction. The bun barely reached the green. But the hot dog landed on the putting surface. The 31-year-old man, whose name wasn't released, dropped to the ground to be arrested as Santa Clara sheriff's deputies converged on him. Woods backed off his birdie putt, then quickly resumed play. Sgt. Jose Cardoza said the man was arrested for disturbing the peace and removed from the property. Because it was a misdemeanor, Cardoza said the man would not be taken to jail and his name not
disclosed. Cardoza said only that he was from Santa Rosa. Arjun Atwal, who played with Woods, said he was concerned for a moment at the sight of a fan yelling out Woods' name and approaching the green. "They could have shot him," Atwal said. "The cops could have thought it was something else." The tournament was eventually won by Bryce Molder edging out Briny Baird at the sixth extra hole of a play-off to earn his first PGA Tour win at the Frys.com Open, after England’s Paul Casey fell away on the final day. Casey started the day in a tie for second, but a finalround 71, including three bogeys and a double bogey, saw him finish joint seventh on 11 under.
The stunning Cartama Oval was again the witness of a brilliant days cricket. It was the Costa del Sol Cricket Club’s turn to provide the entertainment and they didn't disappoint. This was an inhouse game which endorsed the ethos of Cricket4All. Team A skippered by Tony Crooks won the toss and put Team B skippered by Phill Nuttall into bat. A slow and cautious opening stand by Phil Flaxman and Peter Winter saw them dig out 60 for the first wicket in 16 overs contained by some very tight bowling. Peter being bowled made way for guesting Fuengirola batsman Asad who hit a quickfire 49 partnered by the in-form Phill Nuttall who accumulated 67 unbeaten
runs in a whirlwind innings. At the end of their 35 overs Team B finished with a very respectable 216 for the loss of three wickets. After lunch it was Team B’s turn to take the field to defend the sizeable total. However it seemed that Team B were taking their siesta on the pitch as the opening batsmen plundered the wayward opening bowlers and racked up 60 runs in four overs – although the majority of these were made up from extras. The introduction of Nick Helme and Asad managed to reduce
the run rate by steady line and length bowling. The breakthrough was made by Asad who clean bowled Tom Tobin who was getting far too comfortable for the liking of Team B. Ray Fry was going well until he was run out by communication failure. There were then useful contributions with the bat from Alan Harris and big hitting by Tony Crooks. However the change of bowling saw Phill and Jody keep the run rate down and Team A reached 189 all out. This was a much closer result
than the scoreline suggests. It could have been anybody’s game until the last few overs. But all were in agreement that the big result was the enjoyment shared for the 22 players!

Andy Murray came from a set down to beat defending champion Rafael Nadal in the final of the Japan Open. The British number one, who won last week's Thailand Open, hit six aces and broke Nadal twice to win the second set 6-2 after losing the first 6-3.
A devastating final set, during which he afforded Nadal only four points, has to be considered one of Murray's finest. He was

Murray then broke the Spanish world number two on three more occasions to win by taking the deciding set 6-0. "I played some great tennis and the third set was some of the best I've played against him," said Murray. "There were a lot of close games towards the end of the first set and the beginning of the second but I managed to get the momentum and didn't give him many chances after that.”

Former world heavyweight boxing champion David Haye is set to announce his retirement. The Londoner informed the British Boxing Board of Control he did not want to renew his licence. Haye, who celebrates his 31st birthday on Thursday, always said he would not fight on past the age of 30. However, many expected the Briton would delay his decision for at least one more big fight, possibly against Ukraine's Vitali Klitschko. His last fight was against Klitschko's brother, Wladimir, last July when he lost his WBA world title by a unanimous points decision in Hamburg.

Spain will rest keeper Iker Casillas, while Raul Albiol is out injured and fellow defender Sergio Ramos and midfielder Xabi Alonso doubtful.
