TOUCHING PEACE WITH OUR FINGERTIPS? - National News

Government plays down ETA peace talks Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez said on Tuesday that the government has nothing to do with the declaration made by the peace conference held by a group of international mediators in San Sebastian on Monday which urged the Basque terrorist group ETA to lay down its arms and

end a 40-year campaign of violence. She said during an interview on National Radio that the government did not “feel concerned about the conference because it was not our initiative, we did not send a representative or make any

evaluation of the declaration”. She said the government's objective was the same as it had been for years – to “bring about the end of ETA”. While acknowledging during another radio interview that “we may be touching peace with our

fingertips”, Minister of the Presidency Ramon Jauregui said that ETA sympathisers appeared to be writing a script to justify abandoning violence to its own followers. He said that for the government, the peace declaration was “just

another bit of paper”. The international negotiators who met on Monday included former UN chief Kofi Annan, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Bruntland. CONTINueD ON PAge 2

WORLD Government plays down ETA peace talks Busy, busy!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

A busy weekend was had! On Friday we went for a very nice evening to the Tamisa Golf Hotel for the launch of the Royal British legion’s annual Poppy Appeal. I think we forget sometimes that, whether we agree with where our armed services are sent by governments or not, the people in the military go to these places because it is their job. They have no say in the matter. They leave their families, friends and loved ones and sometimes give everything to the rest of us. The Poppy Appeal is there to raise money to help these brave men and women when they need it. I know times are hard at the moment but even putting a euro each in the collection tins adds up to doing something really useful. Another thing you could do to help is, if you have an apartment or villa that you’d normally let out to holidaymakers and have a week free, why not give just one week to www.helpforheroes.org.uk for a break to recuperate with their families so that they can adjust to daddy with only one leg now or mummy being just that bit different since she came back from the war and be able to do it in peace? We live in a beautiful area away from all the hustle and bustle and grime of the cities that a lot of these people come from and it would be great to be able to give something back for once. Have a look at the website to see what you can do. I had a wander around our local dunnes Stores at the weekend and they’ve got their new autumn collection in. lots of rich rust colours to give a glow to your cold days to come, plus all shades of browns and creams, greys winter whites and blacks. They’ve also got those great furry boots back in that I live in during the winter - their so comfy and warm I must be up to five pairs in different colours now and, at the price they charge, I buy a new pair in a new colour each year!

The Basque National Party and the Basque Socialists sent representatives to the meeting and this is being widely interpreted as a possible prelude to ETA's dissolution. ETA has killed more than 850 people in the 40 years since it was founded with the aim of carving out an independent Basque homeland in northern

Spain and south-western France. It has been weakened in the past few years by the arrests of most of its leaders and called a ceasefire at the beginning of the year.

already committed itself to a peaceful struggle for independence. Political observers are adopting a “wait and see” attitude because ETA has declared ceasefires in the past but without any commitment to laying down its arms and ending the violence. Meanwhile, police warn ETA is playing for time.

Last month, hundreds of ETA prisoners called on militants still at large to end the violence and the group's political wing has

Absentee advisers drew salaries Eighteen of the 30 advisers to the Association Western Costa del Sol Municipalities have repeatedly not turned up for work since 2008, despite drawing average salaries of €25,000 a year. All of them belong to the Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) and the Socialist Party, which managed the Association. On two occasions, the Association sent letters warning the advisers to put in an appearance at least once a week, if they wanted to continue drawing their salaries. In 2008, the year the IU and the Socialist Party took over the Association, a dozen advisers used the fingerprint reader less than 100 times, others fewer than ten. Some did not turn up at all. 'Indignants' ignite worldwide protests

Two MSF aid workers As thousands of protesters belonging to the so-called May-15 Youth Movement marched kidnapped in more than 60 Spanish cities on Saturday, thousands more were turning out in hundreds of cities in more than 80 countries around the world. All of them are protesting about the high unemployment, the influence of powerful financial institutions on policy and the inability of governments around the world to get to grips with the economic crisis. They are also demanding electoral reform, an anticorruption drive and the protection of public health and education services. But despite widespread sympathy and support, the impact of 15-M has been limited, and political observers say this will continue to be the case until the movement comes up with specific solutions rather than wide-ranging demands. Indeed, since the movement took off, the national and regional governments have ushered in further austerity measures and cuts. In cash-

strapped Catalonia, for instance, hospital beds and some clinics are being closed while cuts in spending on supply teachers have sparked a wave of strikes in other parts of the country. However, the 15-M movement has been very active in fighting evictions. With house repossessions at a record high, activists have organised protest "flash-mobs" and stalled 83 evictions so far. They say low-income families were tricked into "junk" mortgages they could never afford but their campaign to allow home owners to pay off their debt by handing over their house keys to the bank has so far been ignored. Buoyed by the success of last Saturday's rally in Madrid's Puerta del Sol – the biggest to date with

dilapidated building on Carretas street, which is being “protected” by some 50 M-15 members. Fellow "outraged ones" in Barcelona had invaded various hospitals and the regional television station TV3 on Saturday and at press time yesterday (Tuesday) were still squatting in an empty building in the Catalan capital.

At press time, police had still not evicted an unknown number of squatters from the

Police in Kenya are still hunting for the gunmen responsible for abducting two female Spanish aid workers near the KenyaSomalia border last Thursday. The Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) workers were taken from Dadaab refugee camp – the world's largest which lies about 50 miles from the Somalia-Kenya border and houses nearly half a million refugees fleeing famine in the Horn of Africa. The aid workers' Kenyan driver was wounded in the attack but is recovering in hospital. In recent weeks, two other foreign women – one English, the other French – have been kidnapped near the border and are believed to have been taken to Somalia. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, said police had recovered an abandoned

vehicle and that the police had acted very quickly. The Kenyan government said the al-Shabab militant group, which controls large swathes of Somalia, was behind the attack but a senior al-Shabab official, who did not want to be named, denied the accusation. He told Reuters news agency that alShabab had heard about the abduction but were were not behind it, adding “nor have they been brought into any area under our control". The head of MSF in Spain, Jose Antonio Bastos, condemned the attack. He said MSF has set up a crisis team but will not provide any further information for the moment in order to ensure a rapid and safe resolution. The UN has since withdrawn its foreign aid workers from the camp, which complicates the humanitarian aid effort there.

The Public Works Ministry has put back the planned privatization of Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat airports for three months because of the difficult situation in the financial markets. In a statement, the ministry said the move arose from requests from companies bidding for the

right to manage the two airports, which had reported "problems in securing the necessary funding" within the established timetable. The new deadline for submitting offers has been postponed to the end of January of next year, which means the process will be handled by the

government voted in by the November 20th general election which the Partido Popular is tipped to win. The PP has already described the planned sale of licenses to operate the airports as a "pillaging" of state assets. The current Socialist government had expected to raise at least €5.3 billion in revenue from the operation, of

which €3.7 billion would come from Madrid-Barajas. Last month, the government suspended plans for a public offering of 30 per cent of the state lottery company Loterías y Apuestas del Estado because the sale price would have been below the minimum €7 billion expected from the operation.

The Madrid regional government wants shops smaller than 750 m2 and some commercial centres to open every day for the hours they choose. The plan is only in the report stage but was given the go-ahead last week. A spokesman said current shopping hours are too limited for the number of tourists that visit or pass through the capital every year. Shops are only allowed to open on a limited number of Sundays and need permission to stay open all day. VAlenCiA

It’s the politicians, stupid! rosa Diez, the candidate for the Union, Progress and Democracy (Upyd) party in the upcoming general election, told supporters at a rally on Saturday that the country's real “drama” is not the economic crisis, but the politicians and their lack of values. She said voters on november 20th shouldn't have to choose between “the bad and the worst”. She said if people voted for her party, which is not running any candidate wanted on corruption charges, “we would win easily”.

Two Spanish cities voted in top 10 for business

Madrid and Barcelona are in the top ten best cities for doing business in Europe, Tenerife according to a survey by Cushman & Wakefield. Remorse leads to confession In the company’s European Cities Monitor, which asked 500 executives in 36 European cities for their opinions, Madrid moved up one spot in the table from eighth to seventh, while Barcelona dropped to sixth. London was ranked as the leading

city in which to do business followed by Paris and Frankfurt, with Amsterdam and Berlin coming fourth and fifth. Spain and Germany are the only two countries to have more than one city in the top ten. The survey

took into account a number of factors, of which the most important for those questioned was easy access to markets and customers, followed by the availability of qualified staff, the quality of telecommunications and transport links with

other cities. Barcelona came out ahead of Madrid as regards the quality of life for employees, while Madrid was seen as having easier access to markets. However, both cities scored poorly in terms of languages spoken.

Unable to bear her burden of guilt any longer, a french woman confessed to the Guardia Civil on September 26th that she had not reported her mother's death to the authorities so that a bank in france would continue to send her pension. She said she had buried her 90-year-old mother in the garden of their home. An autopsy revealed that the woman had died of natural causes and the Guardia said charges would not be pressed, at least not here in Spain.

Climate change is a 'grave threat' to security and health Doctors, academics and military experts, meeting in London ahead of the annual UN climate conference to be held in South Africa later this year, have said climate change poses "an immediate, growing and grave threat" to health and security around the world.

and China among the societies that are heavily dependent on oil and other imports. A number of recent studies have suggested that climate impacts will make conflict more likely, by increasing competition for scarce but essential resources such as water and food.

Scientific studies suggest that the most severe climate impacts will fall on the relatively poor countries of the tropics and UK military experts at the meeting pointed out that much of the world's trade moves through such regions, with North America, Western Europe

The International Institute for Strategic Studies recently warned that climate change "will increase the risks of resource shortages, mass migration and civil conflict". Alejandro Litovsky, founder of the Earth Security Initiative, said that even without the

increasing effect of conflict, prices of essential goods were bound to rise. He said that since the year 2000 commodity prices have been climbing, and this is not likely to stop. Last week, multinational coffee house Starbucks warned that climate change threatened the world's coffee supplies in 20-30 years' time. On the health side, doctors warned of a raft of impacts, particularly in developing countries. They said hunger and malnutrition were likely to increase, and some infectious diseases were likely to spread. Tackling carbon emissions, by contrast, would bring

a range of health benefits. They said modest life style changes – such as increasing physical activity through walking and cycling – will cut rates of heart disease and stroke, obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, dementia and depressive illness. The meeting called on the EU to increase its ambition and pledge to reduce emissions by 30% from 1990 levels by 2020, rather than the current target of 20%. However, there does not appear to be political consensus for such a move within EU governments.

Mubarak sons have $340m stashed away egypt's deputy justice minister assem al-Gohari said on Monday that the two sons of deposed egyptian President Hosni Mubarak have $340 million in Swiss bank accounts. Both sons are standing trial on corruption charges and complicity in the killing of protesters. one factor that led to Mr Mubarak's overthrow was the belief that he and his sons had illegally amassed vast amounts of wealth corruptly. Switzerland has already frozen the assets of the Mubarak family and other former egyptian government figures. Mexico

Army frees 61 kidnap victims The Mexican army has rescued 61 men who were being held prisoner by a drugs gang in Piedras Negras near the US border. The captives said they had been abducted from various parts of Mexico and forced to work for organised crime. The authorities did not say which criminal organisation was involved but Piedras Negras is thought to be a stronghold of the Zetas cartel which last year murdered more than 170 migrants who refused to work for them. L'Oreal heiress loses control A French judge has ruled that L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, 88, is to be placed under the guardianship of members of her family, because of concerns about Mrs Bettencourt's declining mental health and her ability to manage her fortune, estimated at €16 billion by Forbes magazine. Liliane Bettencourt is estranged from her daughter, Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers, who,

along with two grandsons, will now control her wealth and property. Another grandson was named as her personal guardian. The ruling was a big victory for Mrs Bettencourt-Meyers, who has long said her mother was squandering her money on flatterers and favour-seekers. The two women have been at the centre of a very public feud over the fate of France's

third-largest family fortune, which started when it was revealed that celebrity photographer Francois-Marie Banier may have received about €1 billion worth of gifts from Mrs Bettencourt over a 20-year period. A legal case against him was dropped, but other allegations surfaced about how Mrs Bettencourt's money was possibly being lavished on politicians, including claims of illegal

donations to President Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign, which are still under investigation. In a newspaper interview published on Sunday, Liliane Bettencourt threatened to leave France if her daughter succeeded in having her placed under her guardianship. Her lawyer said Mrs Bettencourt was ready for "nuclear war" with her daughter.

Three suspects have been charged with chaining four mentally disabled adults in a basement in Philadelphia and collecting their disability benefits. Police found the victims after investigating reports from squatters. Israeli soldier freed Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was handed over by Hamas to Egyptian mediators at the start of a carefully choreographed prisoner swap early on Tuesday morning. Sgt Shalit was taken to the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, to be handed over in the presence of Israeli representatives. He was then transferred to the Kerem Shalom crossing between Egypt and Israel. He made a phone call to his parents and underwent a brief medical examination, before being flown by helicopter to the Tel Nof airbase in Israel. Meanwhile, the first of 477 Palestinian prisoners destined for Gaza or exile abroad crossed into Egypt

from Kerem Shalom, a 10minute drive from Rafah. Early on Tuesday, a large convoy of inmates left a prison in the south of Israel while a smaller group left another in the centre of the country – both under heavy security. The remaining 550 are scheduled to be released next month. On Monday the Israeli Supreme Court rejected a bid by families of victims of militant attacks to delay the swap. In Gaza, the Hamas Interior minister urged residents to "refrain from using weapons and ammunition to express their joy" during a hero's welcome planned for the 295 prisoners who were sent to the territory. Some of the Palestinians released will be flown to host

135 x 190 150 X 190 180 X 200 countries including Turkey, Syria or Qatar. Sgt Shalit was a 19-year-old tank crewman when he was captured in June 2006. The campaign to free him made him a national symbol in Israel. His family lived in a protest tent in Jerusalem for 16 months while they campaigned for his release.

Iran denies Saudi claims of assassination plot President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a live interview on al-Jazeera TV on Monday that US claims of a plot to assassinate a Saudi envoy are as false as its allegations were about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He said

the US had hoped to make people forget about its "internal economic problems" and was looking for an excuse to toughen sanctions against Iran. Two men, one a usedcar salesman who lived in

UK News New Royal in the UK The small town of Wootton Bassett became only the third town in the UK to be honoured with the title “Royal” in front of its name at the weekend. The ceremony was attended by thousands of people and was presided over by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne who handed over the Letters Patent on behalf of the Queen. It has been over 100 years since the last town was bestowed with the honour. The two other towns are Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent – which was given the prefix “Royal” in 1909 by Edward VII for its connections with the royal family since the Stuart dynasty – and Royal Leamington Spa which was given the title in 1838 after a visit by Queen Victoria. Royal Wootton Bassett has earned its title for the silent dignity in which its inhabitants have welcomed back the funeral corteges of the hundreds of service men and women brought into

RAF Lyneham, over the past ten years. The ceremony was also attended by David Cameron and the new Defence secretary Philip Hammond. The Princess Royal said a personal thank-you to the people of the town for their rich sense of values and for the example of dignity and respect shown to those military personnel who have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. She also thanked the townspeople for giving up their time – including police personnel who have given up their days off, local shop-keepers, students from the local schools and general townsfolk – to

Protest held in front of St Pauls over two thousand protesters gathered last weekend in the capital to urge polititians to listen to the people of the country and not to the bankers to try and resolve the current economic crisis. Around 250 people camped overnight in the shadow of St Pauls as police stopped the protesters from gathering in the square round the corner, where the banks’ main headquarters are situated. The protest was a globally co-ordinated one with the only trouble taking place in Rome. London protesters have now set up a tented camp with food and medical facilities and say they will stay at least until Christmas. KEnyA

Troops pursue kidnappers A Kenyan government spokesperson, Alfred Matua, has said that Kenyan troops have crossed the border into Somalia in pursuit of militants believed to be responsible for the kidnapping of a partially deaf British woman who was taken after her husband had been murdered, a French woman who spent around half the year in Somalia and the two Spanish aid workers that were kidnapped last Thursday (see page 4). none of the victims has been seen since they were taken from remote beach resorts and the kidnappings have devastated Kenya’s tourist industry. US President Harry S Truman formally ended the state of war with Germany

Father of missing Long awaited children arrested murder trial starts Dozens of National Police were deployed outside the Seville court – where the trial of the four people accused of killing 17-yearold Marta del Castillo opened on Monday – to hold back an angry crowd and dozens of photographers and TV cameramen, waiting for the arrival of the accused.

Police have arrested the father of the two children – eight-year-old Ruth and two-year-old JosÊ Breton Ortiz – whom he reported missing on the evening of Saturday, October 8th, telling police he had lost them in the Cruz Conde Park in Cordoba. However, CCTV footage shows the father entering the park but there is no sign of the children. They had travelled alone from Huelva where their mother lives and were supposed to have met their father earlier that day. Police searched properties belonging to the father's parents in Cordoba as well as the Guadalquivir river but found nothing. A police source said the father was arrested because of contradictions in his

version of the event and may face a charge of homicide. Police returned with him on Tuesday to his parent's finca outside Cordoba – which they had already searched on Sunday. The mother, Ruth, who was too grief-stricken to attend a march of more than 1,000 people in Huelva, sent a letter that

was read to her supporters by a family spokesperson. In it she said, among other things: “I am capable of forgetting if I see their faces again. The family apparently believes that the father may have kidnapped the children to make their mother suffer for leaving him two months ago.

Three of them, who had been released on bail – Samuel Benitez, Javier Delgado, and his girlfriend Maria Garcia – arrived separately and without a police escort. But the crowd was saving most of its anger for self-confessed killer Miguel CarcaĂąo, who arrived from jail with a heavy police escort amid boos and shouts of “assassinâ€?. A fifth person involved in the case, a minor identified as Javier

G, was found guilty of concealment at his trial in February this year but was absolved of the charges of rape and murder. Marta del Castillo was last seen on the night of January 24th, 2009, when she left home to meet her former boyfriend, Miguel CarcaĂąo. Her body has never been found and the accused claim they do not know where it is, although Benitez had originally confessed to helping CarcaĂąo throw it into the Guadalquivir. CarcaĂąo has changed his version of events three times, and police suspect that all four are keeping silent to protect an adult who they believe helped them to dispose of Marta's body. The case has attracted much media attention, as

well as protest marches organised by Marta's parents and friends to demand a change in the law that would make a life sentence last for life and not just 30 years as it does now. The trial is expected to last until the end of November. In addition to the four accused, 90 witnesses and 15 experts will testify.

Axarquia goes for nuptial tourism

Trafico focuses on secondary roads

In an attempt to keep tourist numbers up all year round, hotels and restaurants along the Axarquia coastline plan to give special discounts and offers to couples, especially foreign ones, who choose to get married there. They will be looking at the results of this kind of tourism at the Marinas, Perla Marina and Balcon de Europa hotels in Nerja which offer a variety of wedding scenarios to couples, with prices ranging from €35 to €90 a head. A week-long campaign to make secondary roads safer began on Monday, October 17th, during which time the Guardia Civil will stop over 104,000 vehicles in Andalucia, 17,800 of them in Malaga province. A Traffic Authority spokesman said the Guardia are paying “special attention” to speeding, and distractions

Nuptial tourism has also been successful in towns like Frigiliana, where couples can marry in the Casa de Cultura which is housed in a well-kept 17th century building. Representatives of several hotels also attended the Expo Gay in Torremolinos to let same sex couples know they will be welcome.

Jail for husband beater The Prosecutor's Office has asked a Malaga court for a 21-month prison sentence and a six-year restraining order for a woman who allegedly insulted and threatened her husband when he told her he was leaving her. The prosecution has also alleged that she physically attacked him on two occasions in September, causing injuries that needed medical attention.

Foreign investors arrive Mayor Angeles Muñoz told reporters last week that the main reason for her recent trip to the Persian Gulf was to attract private investment in the infrastructure the town needs. She said neither the government in Madrid nor the Junta de Andalucia had responded to her appeals for development funds, forcing her to seek private investors. She said representatives of the regent´s business School in london arrived this week to look at a 500,000 m2 plot in nueva Andalucia earmarked for a business university. coin

Pressure for motorway completion A day after the Junta de Andalucia's Public Works department announced that the works to finish the connection to the Malaga motorway will be renewed shortly, the Town Hall announced plans to encourage the local people to mobilise to demand their completion as they have done in the past. The road should have been finished two years ago, and a Town Hall source noted that the Junta's announcement did not give a specific date. “Hence the need to pressure them,” the source said.

Memo from

Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Signs of maturity

N

ot surprisingly, this photo appeared on the front pages of every Spanish newspaper last week. I don't think the two main candidates in an upcoming general election have ever been caught having a friendly conversation, but there they were – Socialist Party candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba and the Partido Popular's Mariano Rajoy chatting away as they waited for last week's National Day military parade to start. Afterwards, Rubalcaba told reporters they'd talked about “sport, the campaign and life”. Rajoy told them “Rubalcaba was talking about whatever he liked but I was talking about football.” Both men are fanatical followers of Real Madrid. The two will be chatting again soon – this time in their one and only televised debate on November 7th. Meanwhile, I think many people must have been gladdened by that photo. If the two main political rivals can be so civil to each other, does it mean that Spanish politicians are finally growing up and will stop acting like petulant brats?

The Soraya effect

M

any people questioned Mariano Rajoy's political judgement when he appointed Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría as the spokesperson for the PP's Parliamentary Group. Apart from being relatively unknown outside the Party she didn't look the part – too short and too young. In fact, she's much older than she looks – she's just turned 30 – and like most short people, both male and female, she's a little fighty cock, as we say “up North”. And she soon had them sitting up and taking notice in Parliament. Rajoy took her on board as a legal adviser to his “cabinet” in the year 2000, when the PP was still in power. She ran on the PP slate for Madrid in the 2004 general election but at 18th on

the list she didn't have much chance of getting a seat until former Finance Minister Rodrigo Rato left parliament to go to the International Monetary Fund and his seat fell to her. But she was just one more MP until after the PP's defeat in the March 2008 election when, as newly appointed PP spokesperson, she took the seat next to Rajoy on the opposition's front bench. Within days she was making then First Deputy PM Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega lose her legendary cool at least a couple of times a week. When Rubalcaba took over from De la Vega in Zapatero's last cabinet shake-up, the Socialists settled back smugly on their benches, thinking “he'll soon put that little madam in her place”. But just the opposite happened. So by the time parliament rose to make way for the general election campaign, the “little madam” had completely won over Socialist foes and PP doubters alike. Not only that, she had also won over the hordes of journalists who roam the corridors of parliament on the look-out for a good quote. She was unfailingly pleasant and polite and never avoided their questions, unlike other politicians, and she always had something corrosive to say about the Socialists.

S

o it came as no surprise when Rajoy announced last week that she would run in the number two slot on the PP's slate for Madrid in the upcoming election. If the PP wins, as all the polls continue to indicate, she'll be First Deputy PM who more often than not replies to the opposition's questions. If she wiped the floor with them when she was in opposition, I almost dread to think what she'll do to the Socialists when she's in power. I get the impression televised parliamentary sessions are going to be more fun to watch – in the event of a PP win, of course. De la Vega was just so boringly wooden and obviously ill at ease in her role. It was a relief when smoothtalking, sly Rubalcaba took over, with his restless hands painting pictures in the air.

The other woman to watch

A

ll the polls indicate that Rosa Diez's Union, Progress and Democracy (UP&D) party is going to get around six or seven seats in the next parliament, whichever of the main party wins. If anyone can take on little Soraya, it's Rosa, who has a tongue as sharp as a double Gillete blade.

Machiavellian manoeuvre

A

lberto Ruiz-Gallardón is finally showing his political eagerness. The Madrid mayor could be heading for a cabinet post in Mariano Rajoy’s government should the Popular Party (PP) win the November 20th election. That is, of course, if you believe the speculation that was raised by his heated rival Esperanza Aguirre, the Madrid regional premier, who told reporters last week that it was Gallardón’s greatest desire to become a minister with a portfolio.

T

he extremely popular mayor was included in the PP’s congressional candidate slate for Madrid, as number four behind Rajoy, his current parliamentary spokeswoman Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría and campaign manager Ana Mato. Four years ago the possibility of Gallardón going to congress set off a big debate inside the PP when arguments arose over whether if it was possible he could hold both a seat in the Chamber of Deputies while continuing to fulfil his duties as mayor. The PP was divided over this issue, even though he and Rajoy’s faction thought there would be no problem, despite the fact that the party’s bylaws state that mayors of towns with more than 100,000 people cannot hold the two offices simultaneously. The matter was put to rest when Rajoy decided not to include the mayor on the 2008 election slate. Gallardón hasn’t specifically expressed what he will do should he be elected to congress but his right-hand man, deputy mayor Manuel Cobo insisted last week that keeping the city hall office and holding a seat in the chamber are legally compatible.

E

nter Aguirre. After Gallardón’s inclusion was announced, Madrid’s firebrand regional premier set off conjectures when she told reporters that Gallardón’s real desire was to become a cabinet member. “I hope his dream comes true,” she said in an ironic good-riddance tone. There has never been any love lost between these two PP rivals. Aguirre, a hard-line conservative who one day fancies herself as prime minister, declared an open war on the more moderate Gallardón after the disastrous results of the last general election when she unsuccessfully tried to wrest control of the party from Rajoy. The two have bickered over capital city policy and other internal PP issues ever since.

G

allardón abandoned his senate seat 17 years ago to go over to the Madrid political scene, serving as deputy regional premier before moving on to city

hall. Eight years ago, when he became Madrid mayor, Gallardón began grooming himself to become one of the PP’s most respected figures, primarily because of his middle-of-the-road, temperate views.

S

hould the 52-year-old Gallardón leave city hall there is little doubt that he will take with him his closest aide, Manuel Cobo. That leaves the third in line to assume the mayoral post and that person isn’t the most liked among the city’s liberal and moderate circles.

E

nter Ana Botella. The wife of former prime minister José María Aznar has wanted to be Madrid mayor ever since she embarked on her own political career after her husband stepped down in 2004. Botella is one of the most controversial figures at city hall and knows she could never win an election on her own terms. As environmental commissioner, she has come under fire for failing to tackle Madrid’s pollution problems, which frequently exceed EU limits. Her annual fights with the organisers of Madrid’s gay pride festival – possibly Europe’s biggest such event – have become legendary. Using as excuse to keep the noise levels down, Botella has become a poster child for gay rights intolerance even threatening to prohibit the rainbow parties from taking place in Madrid’s extravagantly gay neighbourhood Chueca. Madrid Socialists' leader Tomás Gómez said that Botella is “the worst thing” that could happen to the residents of the capital, describing her as “sectarian” and “a loyal follower of the most radical wing” inside the PP.

C

onspiracy theories aside, it appears more and more that Rajoy has a pact with Aznar to open the political door for the former prime minister’s wife without asking residents – or at least PP voters, who appear to be the majority in Madrid – who they would like to represent them should Gallardón make the jump. It is these behind-the-scenes chess-piece moves that have supporters of the 15-M movement demanding radical changes in the way politics is played out here. Elected officials should only be allowed one office, one salary and no other outside sources of income while they are on the public payroll. At the same time, there must be some type of municipal reform that prevents party leaders, like Rajoy, from Machiavellian manoeuvres designed to shoo in favourites with total disregard to the voters.

Community e Poppy Appeal for 2011 has been launched Last weekend saw Spain’s annual Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal start with money being raised at a Gala Dinner at the Tamisa Golf Hotel, Mijas Costa Last year The Royal British Legion Spain South raised the impressive sum of €76,544.49 – all the more impressive when you consider the number of people who are members of the legion here. Every year they work hard raising money by rattling tins, and organising events such as gala dinners, holding all manner of cake bakes, as well as summer, autumn, winter and spring fayres throughout the year. Overall last year (figures are for 2009/10) the Poppy Fund worldwide raised just under £35 million and this year’s figures are hoped to smash the £40 million mark. It is further hoped that overall this year the RBL will raise over €90 million for the RBL’s 90th anniversary, a sum which will include legacies and other events as well as the Poppy appeal donations.

The Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the exService community and over 360,000 members continue to ensure that this voice does not go unheard. To receive help from the RBL the beneficiary has to have received at least seven days’ pay in one of the UK’s armed service – including the reserves and the TA’s – but beneficiaries can also be their families and dependents, should they be killed in action or find themselves unable to earn a living any more. We have all seen the repatriation of soldiers who have been killed overseas as their coffins have been driven through Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. And we must not forget that the Poppy Appeal is not just for soldiers from the two World Wars. The Royal British Legion goes on to care for

the families of those soldiers killed in action, and those who can no longer work due to terrible injuries caused by roadside bombs in Afghanistan and Iraq – as well as every other service man and woman who needs their help. Because of the numbers injured in these recent and ongoing conflicts, help is probably needed now more than any time during the last 30 years. But the Legion cannot give it without the help of every man and woman putting their hands in their pockets for what they can give to the cause. These people who need your help get injured while trying to make the world a safer place for us all to live in. They could easily be your sons or daughters so, please, give all you can and think of the age old saying: “We will remember them”. written by Kym Wickham

Great news! As we have all been told, from the 1st of January 2012 DEFRA will have changed their rabies policy. It will now only be 21 days after the rabies vaccination that your pet can enter the UK from France and Spain – of particular interest for us is that there will no longer be a need for a blood test. Now there is absolutely NO excuse NOT to take your pets with you when you return home! It will also become cheaper and easier to travel abroad with pets when new rules are introduced. If you are looking at using at using a pet transportation company it is important to use these guidelines. • Your pets are not a piece of luggage so choose a company who are experienced animal handlers; we would recommend that you use a “Pets Only” transporter company. • If transporting pets by road the vehicle used should be customised, have safe, secure, fitted travel compartments with water containers, and be rotary vented, with twin air conditioning and privacy glass in the windows.

• Vehicles would be better if they had no bulkhead between the driver and the animals to ensure that the driver can hear the pets. •Experienced pet handlers with testimonials to prove it is an essential. Posh Pets vehicles have perforated vinyl on the windows that also provides shade for the pets as well as having privacy glass so pets can see clearly out but people cannot see in. Their vehicles have climate control and rotary vents, customised compartments for their safety and comfort. Pets always have access to fresh water, have regular walks en route and have stop overs in fabulous pet friendly accommodation. They offer a hassle free door-to-door service. A great big present for the kids The children’s ward at St Bernards Hospital – the Rainbow Ward – were surprised by the gift of a big wall-mounted television from Tina and Douglas Young whose daughter had spent some time under the ward’s care and who has made a full recovery.

Ministerial statement by Luis Montiel I wish to inform all members of the electorate, particularly those who voted for me at the last parliamentary elections, that I will not be standing at the forthcoming general elections. Months ago it was indicated to me that the party considers that its prospects of electoral success will be better served by the rejuvenation of the line-up and consequently I have decided to facilitate this by not standing for re-selection by the party. There is no doubt that substantial progress has been made by this government on all fronts and yet so much remains to be done. In the employment sector great progress has been made over the last four years in creating the employment framework to assist young people and the long-term unemployed into the world of work. Indeed, hundreds of residents and employers have been assisted during my term in office, in spite of many existing hurdles. Unfortunately, the refurbishment of the Dutch Magazine into a new training centre, devised to cater for a greater flexibility of use and diversification of NVQ apprenticeships, has not been able to be established within my term in office and, therefore, a big regret, given that it was fundamental to my vocational training development policy objective. Nevertheless, the diversification of vocational training apprenticeships and the setting up of employability and supported employment schemes in partnership with employers is now firmly established and constitute a reality that will facilitate and shape the way for further progress in employment and vocational training policy. Notwithstanding, any observer (obviously not from a political partisan perspective) who objectively considers the future

prospects of resident labour employment and their participation in Gibraltar’s economic development, will acknowledge that the policy is in place to meet industry skills, needed to confront structural and other causes of unemployment. Hence, IT, telecom., engineering and construction apprenticeships in the private and public sectors are well established and, for the first time in years, employers are actively cooperating in partnership agreements. In the health and social care sector, for example, apprenticeships in NVQ up to level 3 will meet future skills, needed in this growing area of employment, thus reducing the need to be continually contracting from abroad costly qualified personnel to look after our senior citizens in residential care. On another front, supported employment schemes such as in the construction industry, newly introduced employability schemes throughout the private sector and government contract schemes, now pave the way and will provide the local registered unemployed with a job opportunity where before there was none. The introduction of internships schemes for graduates and other academically orientated persons will widen their scope and offer a career challenge through training and work experience. This will gain them the real prospect of work within a set and definite period. After years of making employers aware of the mutual benefits of these schemes, more and more employers are now warming up to these initiatives. In this regard I am grateful to my staff and key company directors and HR personnel from the private sector who have assisted me in this endeavour. These policies are

intended to open up employment opportunities to local residents genuinely seeking work, and are designed, through partnership agreements with employers, to prepare and gain them employment advantage from competition from foreign labour. Thus this policy will, in some areas, reverse or at least, check the loss of traditional quality skilled and unskilled jobs to local resident labour. This policy is pursued, not from a discriminatory or narrow nationalistic perspective as some politicians and activists who profess to be socialists, regularly do, but to ensure that our people be given a job opportunity in their home land. The undeniable reality, however, is that at present our economy creates more jobs than there are economically active residents available to take up many of these jobs. In some sectors we do not yet have the skills and experience required, or the will to take on some of the less “desirable” jobs, from within the resident registered unemployed. The majority of these jobs are in the private sector and no effort must be spared to encourage and facilitate such employment access to those genuinely seeking a job opportunity. It is still the case that employment in the public sector is seen by many – and in particular by many of the registered unemployed – as best employment. And who can blame them? As we approach the forthcoming elections it is important to bear in mind that the public/private sectors’ employment culture divide is not fuelled further for populist and political ends and that we are committed to pursue new and radical policies which will genuinely stimulate economic activity, redress the imbalance and promote greater employment appeal in the private sector.

e joys of jumping …

Written by Jean Joss

On last week's national holiday the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre (the Estepona Riding School) held a social show jumping competition.

T

here were a variety of classes aimed at competitors of all ages and abilities – from “poles on the floor” and “cross poles” for beginners to more challenging heights going up to 130 centimetres (4ft 3” for those who still don't think metric!). s the mother of a pony-mad daughter I well remember spending many hours at the ringside, heart in mouth, willing her far from cooperative steed to make sufficient effort to allow her to come home with a “clear round” rosette – the be all and end of of your existence at 10 years old. Our experiences took place at local shows in windswept Cotswold fields rather than purpose-built arenas and it was rare indeed to be able to

A

sit in the sunshine between nail-biting sessions. So I was intrigued to see just how different jumping might be in this beautiful professional setting on a stunning October day in Spain. here was a distinct holiday atmosphere with tables all along one side of the “pista” (behind the barrier of course) where spectators in summer clothes were enjoying drinks and socialising while watching competitors in the ring. A variety of pooches were in attendance as well as a little lamb being cradled in a blanket! The riders were all neat and tidy in their jodpurs and hard hats but what I really found fascinating was how fashions have changed over

the years. Take for instance Tia and Luci. Luci is a lovely grey Andalusian mare who used to belong to a friend of mine, Tia is her young owner/rider. Colour coordination in the show ring is nothing new, but a PINK leather saddle and pink reins and pink boots? They looked extremely smart and went beautifully with Tia's pink shirt and the pink on her helmet – to someone of my generation this was as strange as first seeing cricketers take to the pitch not wearing whites. Things have definitely moved on fashion-wise in the horse world too! adly last Wednesday the emphasis seemed to be solely on speed. So many of the horses and riders jumped stylishly and well but the winners were

e tS ev

Show Bar

those who got round the course in the least time possible, at any price. In the classes I watched there were no traditional “jump-offs” – where the riders have to jump higher and higher until the last one with a clear round wins. So those who had the most talent and rode the best weren't always in the winning line-up, and it was sad that so many young riders were allowed to use spurs in an attempt to just go faster and faster. owever, what was no different from all those years ago was the enthusiasm of the riders, the patience of their mounts and the dedication of the parents and instructors. There were whizzy little ponies rushing their diminutive riders round the ring, manes flying, and

H

riders' faces clamped in concentration as they leapt over obstacles with all the impetus of the top show jumpers at Wembley. And larger, long-striding horses ridden by children whose legs barely reached below the saddle flaps, generously taking them round and getting them out of trouble like true “school masters”. As every new competitor entered the ring supporters would freeze in anticipation,

glued to the scene until the last jump had been cleared and they could clap enthusiastically with relief. t may not have been quite The Horse of the Year Show – but it was just as important to some!

MoViES to WAtcH out FoR

Contagion By Stephen Soderburgh starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslett There's a deadly virus now spreading around the world, and international businesswoman Gwyneth Paltrow is the first person to bring it to the United States. Soderburgh's thoughtprovoking thriller tracks the outbreak as death spreads across the globe, causing world-wide panic.

cinema seat, given previous "real" alerts about possible flu pandemics. Soderburgh unwinds the tale through multiple viewpoints and story lines which means the audience has to pay attention, but it's deftly done so no need to worry about losing the plot.

It's tautly done, with lots of chilling moments and a top cast, and has the "blimey, maybe that could really happen" factor to have you rooted to your

The movie begins on Day 2 – straight into the onset of the virus. Beth Emhoff (Paltrow) has been cheating on her husband Mitch (Matt Damon) so it's

tough justice that she should end up as the first US victim. She is taken into hospital with a mystery cough and dies. But then her son dies too and confusion starts to reign. As the virus spreads around the world US health official Dr Ellis Cheever (Lawrence Fishburne) tries to control the crisis. In the meantime, Jude Law plays a blogger who is pondering on possible cures via the

internet and a young doctor Erin Mears (Kate Winslet) works with Cheever as the medical fraternity around the globe frantically seeks an antidote, as panic spreads, and society breaks down. The movie switches from victim to victim, takes us back to where Beth first contacted the virus, and slowly reveals just how the pandemic started. A sobering and chilling tale.

t isn´t Halloween without watching John Carpenter´s “Halloween”, good ol´ Jamie Lee Curtis running around, screaming at anything that moves. The classic character of Michael Myers, who only appears at Halloween, and instead of carving up pumpkins he prefers to carve up the neighbours. The remake stayed true to the original story – my only complaint is that it was too long. Rob Zombie did a good job, and you can see his enthusiasm and energy in the movie.

T

ime to gather around the campfire, sing “Kumbaya” and toast marsh-mallows and wait for Jason to turn up. Kevin Bacon in his first mayor role as Jack, trying desperately to fix up Camp Crystal Lake and survive Jason´s psychotic mother. The original “Friday the 13th” is a true classic, however the remake had a more poetic storyline and the camp wasn´t really a character in it, like the original. I think the remake was trying too hard.

T

his week sees the release of the remake of “The Thing”. Now, those are pretty big boots to fill. The original is said to be one of the scariest horror films ever made, and special alien effects are still worthy of special mention, particularly as it was all done without any help from CGI. The early scene in the dog pen, when we first see the nasty beast, can never be forgotten. The dogs even did a great job of acting. I doubt actors in the remake will be able to do better than the dogs!

A Nightmare on Elm Street” the original – Brilliant! It´s the perfect example of ‘80s horror. Everything about this movie is perfect, the whiney teenagers, Freddy´s tongue-in-cheek

lines – yes, the original is unbeatable. The remake was wrong on so many levels, I don´t think it was even the same story, let alone genre.

F

rom next year we should see some more remakes of ‘80s classics popping up, “Hellraiser” being one of them – the delay was due to the directors pulling out. Directors Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer (Drive Angry), said: “Right after “Drive Angry” they (Dimension Films) asked us to do “Hellraiser”. Originally what they wanted was an epic and dark, rated R. It was in our contract. So…if WE do “Hellraiser”, it´s rated R; if they want to do PG-13 then they have to get rid of us.” Maybe, there is hope after all.

O

ne of my old time favourites is “Child´s Play”. Who doesn´t love Chucky? Right? But here we go again, next year they start shooting the remake. The new version is supposed to be darker and less comedic. Brad Dourif has been confirmed to return as the voice of Chucky, so perhaps this remake won´t be a total lost cause.

T

here are rumours that “An American Werewolf in London” is also set to be remade, along with “Carrie” – yes, I know, it´s truly horrific. Just to give you some more gory details, Megan Fox is rumoured to be playing Carrie. It´s terrible, absolutely terrible – I dread to think what they are going to do with “Evil Dead”

M

ovie makers! Please stop remaking the classics, you´re wasting your time and money. A word to the wise, we LIKE bad horror film and cheesy effects – so leave ´em alone!

It is all love and romance this week and you will be looking for ways in which you can encourage some more spice and fulfilment in your life. Once you figure out what is missing it will be easier to obtain exactly what it is you are seeking. The inner restlessness bubbling about is urging you to unearth something with more depth and meaning. Be willing to throw caution to the wind if it feels right; trust your instincts to guide you.

Ok, so it’s probably bad for the diet but, sometimes we all need just a little bit of naughty and with double cream or custard, this is great!

You have been making some calculated moves lately and slowly they are showing signs of producing some welcoming results. You can expect to be more than tested this week and it is vitally important that you keep the high ground in everything you do. There is a tendency to want to confront certain individuals but it would be more advantageous now to put yourself in the role of the observer while you gather all the facts and info together.

Ingredients:

Let us have a look at your lifestyle – there is not much room for rest and relaxation in your schedule of late is there? Your week is all about taking the time to get the rest and relaxation you want and need. The more relaxed you are the better connections you will have with others and the more attractive you will seem. The weekend becomes great for social networking; new people will give you inspiration and encouragement. It is important that you hold the line and stand your ground; it is not up to you to accommodate another if it crosses your bottom line. Mars is giving you the courage to stand tall from a position of strength and be counted. You often end up giving way more than anyone can hope to give in return and because of this others tend to expect more from you. This week things can really heat up. Pay close attention to the details and fix any problem areas now before they get worse and turn into major issues - a stitch in time, saves nine, as they say. It is good to be as organised and prepared as possible for what you are going to do before you take any form of action. Get your priorities in order and you will sail through any challenges this week may present. Someone special may enter your life - keep your eyes open. Although we do not always know why something is happening at the time, after the event we can see why or how that event occurred. It is easier to look back for the answers, hindsight is a great thing. Your mind is clear and sharp right now and you can finally see something for exactly what it is. You may want to spend time with family members and will be frustrated if they live some distance away.

Something has got right under your skin and you have had enough. Perhaps your own expectations of another were feeding this feeling of discomfort and now you realise that no matter what you do, someone is not going to budge. You have reached decision point and either you sit down and try and work it through by seeing if a compromise can be reached, or you walk away - you rd September 23 know that things cannot stay the same. nd October 22

This week you could find yourself becoming more suspicious of others and questioning their true motivations. It is easy for your feelings and emotions to get the better of you and it is vital that you remain positive and not allow yourself to become too emotionally drained. There could be a tendency to see and hear what you want to or what you suspect rather than the reality. Keep as light-hearted as possible and make sure you have some fun. Aquarius, you are known for being innovative, inventive and a trend setter, always a step or two ahead of everyone else. However, one problem that you can suffer from is that you can become your own worst enemy by taking on unnecessary conflicts or by challenging others. So this week it is all about overcoming your own negative tendencies and directing this energy in a positive manner that will ultimately benefit you.

When things are happening naturally, then it takes very little effort at all. When things are over-thought or forced it can be an exhaustive process. Some things at the moment appear easy and others seem to take it out of you. You are coming up with some strange ideas right now but they may just be the perfect answer or solution to a problem that no-one has been able to resolve. Speak up and let yourself be heard.

SHOES, SHOES AND MORE SHOES - SO MANY SHOPS, SO LITTLE TIME!

Forget killer heels this season ... the trend is for slightly lower heels and beautiful colours With the autumn bridal shows happening in New York last week, a survey shows that women are taking a leaf out of Kate Moss’ s book when she wore elegant Manolo Blahnik pumps for her wedding to Jamie Hince, and even Sarah Jessica Parker has started to go elegant rather than skyscraper. George Malkemus, president of Manolo Blahnik USA, explains it thus, ‘It was a chic idea for a minute. You

wore a red sole, and everyone knew you spent $1,200 or $1,400 for your shoes. And I would say there was a period when certain customers abandoned us and moved into that world.’ But, as Blahnik himself added last week: ‘The gimmicky thing I’m not very keen on. I’ve never been tempted to do these hideous furniture shoes.’ Linda Fargo, Senior Vice President for women’s fashion at the Bergdorf

Goodman in New York, where a waiting list was necessary, said ‘Manolo’s shoes are very much in the spirit of this moment’s clothes, pared down, with simple lines, and I hate to say ladylike, but classic. It’s the prevailing mood in fashion right now that wants the foot to be connected to the ground, rather than teetering on the edge of a 2” platform.” The trend started a couple of months ago when

designers started putting elegance back into fashion. Gone are all the zips and bits tied together, in is good quality clothing with knee length for daytime and office wear and long for evenings. Women are once again becoming more feminine. Of course, women still need to make sure they get the same pay as a man if they do the same job but, ask most women and they would love to go back to the

days when men were gentlemen holding doors open for them and giving up their seats on the train. Burnt bras are making way for feminine lingerie – of course Janet Reager and La Perla have always been there – and that’s what the new woman wants. So, ladies, if you’re going to a ‘do’, think Audrey Hepburn elegance and beautiful hats, shoes and handbags – grunge is on the way out!

Elegance is ‘In’

What to wear for ITV sex for the over 60s your wedding Tuesday morning’s airing of ITV’s This Morning shocked viewers with a segment on sex toys and positions for the over 60’s. Presenter Philip Schofield warned viewers to ‘avert their eyes’ if they thought they would find it upsetting adding: “We ought to make it clear that we are going to be demonstrating positions, showing sex aids and discussing intimate details during this item.”

The New York Bridal Fashion Week kicked off with everything from the usual white meringues to sharp suits, black gowns and anything in between. This year we’ve had Kate Middleton and Zara Phillips getting married in traditional gowns and the new Mrs McCartney in a knee length day dress. So what should you wear for your special day? Well, first of all it depends on where the ceremony is being held and how many people are going to turn up. Of course if you fancy miles of lace and net and you’re getting married in a registry office with just two witnesses or if you’re getting married in a huge church with a thousand guests and

fancy a black business suit and black hat, why shouldn’t you wear exactly what you want? It’s your day after all. The idea at the moment is “anything goes”. As long as you feel good in it and the bones holding it up aren’t going to kill you by the end of the reception – do whatever you want!

If it hadn’t been aired at a time when many school children were on their half term holidays and when people were having their cornflakes, the piece showing an elderly couple

getting into all manner of positions in their jimjams could have been found funny. The piece also saw the show’s ‘sexperts’ talking about a glow-in-the-dark bullet vibrator – assumedly featured so that they could find it in the dark without having to put their specs on!

Demi is diminishing more every day The usually perfectly proportioned Demi Moore, ex-wife of Bruce Willis, is reported to have dropped weight amid rumours of current husband Ashton Kutcher having a fling with a 22-year-old blonde on their sixth wedding anniversary. Some reports claim that she now weighs a mere seven stone and that clothing is just hanging off her now diminishing frame. Dressed in a red mid-calf length dress she appeared on the red carpet alone at the Sunday Night

premier of ‘Margin Call’. Her complexion was pale and her usually great smile appeared forced. Ever the professional, Demi smiled as the flashbulbs went off last night, wore her wedding ring defiantly and kept a dignified silence over the cheating allegations. It's thought the couple have headed to special Kabbalah retreats and have been having couples’ counseling to get them through a very tough time.

However, many complaints were received by the station and some viewers took to Twitter to voice their shock such as James_harrod saying: “Making old people act out sex positions on telly just before lunchtime…oh ITV, for shame.” Please, ITV, not with my coco pops!

Sleep apnea Five things that can harm eyes causes sexual problems Fatigue, high blood pressure and weight gain are some of sleep apnea’s more familiar symptoms, but a growing body of research has also found that it can be a drain on intimacy, causing erectile dysfunction in men and loss of libido in women. Researchers suspect this may have to do with sex hormones such as testosterone, which rise with sleep and fall when there is a lack of it. Because it causes intermittent waking and chronic sleep deprivation, they said apnea could directly drive down levels of these hormones, causing sexual dysfunction. In the most recent study, scientists compared 80 women with obstructive sleep apnea between the ages of 28 and 64 with 240 women without the condition. They found that the apnea patients had significantly higher rates of sexual dysfunction. In an earlier study, researchers looked for signs

There is no evidence that sitting too close to the telly can damage your eyes and although carrots are high in Vitamin A and antioxidants, they’re no magic vision food. But here are some things to avoid to keep your eyes healthy.

of sexual problems in 401 men who showed up at a clinic for suspected sleep apnea. Of those who received the diagnosis, about 70 per cent had erectile dysfunction, compared with 34 per cent in those without sleep apnea. However, treatment can make a difference. Patients who have undergone surgery to correct facial abnormalities that contribute to apnea have experienced improvements in intimacy, and those who started using masks at night that administer continuous positive airway pressure also have also reported benefits in their sexual relationships.

This is one of the biggest no-nos when it comes to spreading infections like conjunctivitis or Herpes Simplex, which can lead to a loss of vision if left untreated. And don’t keep mascara longer than the recommended six months – something 92 per cent of women admit to – because it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. And never apply it when in a moving vehicle – scratching your eye with a mascara wand is the most common injury from eye make-up and can also lead to infections.

Going Gaga Lady Gaga set off a trend when she wore the Mangainspired “circle lenses” – which cover the whites of the eye to make the pupil look larger – in her Bad Romance video. But these eye accessories, made in Asia and available online, lack quality control and experts have warned that

Looking for clues to live a long and healthy life Dutch scientists have pieced together the entire DNA sequence of a woman who lived to 115, looking for clues to why some people are born with genes for a long life. They said the woman, who was the oldest in the world at the time of her death, had the mind of someone decades younger and no signs of dementia, which suggests she had genes that protected her against it. In the more than 10 years since the first draft of the human genetic code was revealed, only a few hundred individuals have had their genes mapped in full. The woman, known only as W115, is the oldest

person to have her genes mapped. She donated her body to medical science, allowing doctors to study her brain and other organs, as well as her entire genetic code. The scientists, from the Department of Clinical Genetics at the VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, said she appeared to have some rare genetic changes in her DNA. They said it was not yet clear what role they carry out, but it appears there is something in her genes that protects against dementia and other diseases of later life. W115 was born prematurely and was not

expected to survive, but she lived a long and healthy life, entering a care home at the age of 105. A test of her mental skills at the age of 113 showed she had the performance of a woman aged 60-75 years. The scientists are making her gene sequence available to other researchers, to further the cause of science. They said studying W115’s DNA was only a first step: “In order to really understand the underlying biology of living a long, healthy life, we will need to look at the DNA sequence of hundreds or thousands of people."

you can lose your vision within 24 hours from an infection. They are also concerned about the craze for semi-permanent lashes so girls can mimic the eyefluttering looks of stars like Cheryl Cole. Unlike falsies, eyelash extensions are applied directly to the lash with a bonding agent and can last up to six weeks. In severe cases, the glues can potentially damage eyes, and repeated use can cause Traction Alopecia, a condition where the real lashes fall out and might never grow back. So, if you really must have them done, only go to a reputable salon and follow the after-care advice scrupulously.

Sun worshipping Gazing at the big blue sky while sunbathing could be hell for your eyes. Sunlight exposure can cause cataracts and worse, optometrists warn. Never look at the sun directly because it can cause irreversible damage to your

eyesight and even lead to blindness. Wear good quality, dark sunglasses sporting the “CE” mark and the British Standard BS EN 1836:2005, which ensures they offer a safe level of UV protection.

Overindulging Eating plenty of fresh foods, giving up smoking and drinking moderately not only protects against heart disease, cancer and stroke, but also against the leading cause of blindness, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD is not an inevitable result of getting old, yet the number of people with it is set to rise by a quarter in the next ten years. Smoking is a huge risk factor in contracting it – it doubles your chances – as is drinking too much alcohol. But keeping an eye on what you eat can stave it off. A diet rich in leafy green vegetables, brightly coloured fruits and veg and oily fish may help.

Always wear goggles in chlorinated water, with UV protection if swimming outside. And contact lens wearers are warned never to swim while wearing them – or even to shower or use a hot tub. Optometrists advise contact lens wearers to invest in prescription goggles because microorganisms in the water may attach themselves to the lens and cause an infection which can be extremely painful and in severe cases can lead to blindness.

Robert Smith We are so lucky to have Salon Varietes putting on musicals of professional calibre at local prices. Oliver! opened on Friday 14th and is absolutely delightful. The show is another Two Peters miracle, how they achieve the discipline in rehearsals and backstage to produce to this standard and still remain friends with everyone is beyond comprehension. Fagin is brilliant, Bill Sykes is

Fuengirola frightening, the kids are excellent, the sets are as good as could be expected given the limitations of space and manpower. What can I criticise? Nothing in the performance. I would have liked to see Fagin's lair much more cluttered but of course they need room for the dance routines and the space off stage for storage must already be full to overflowing. There was a bookcase on stage which seemed to be

Mike Souter

incongruous at times. As far as the performers are concerned they are all delightful, with a fabulous voice on Mr. Bumble and Alex Avery, as Nancy, absolutely nailed it, bringing the audience to tears with 'As Long As He Needs Me'. Altogether a delightful and riveting show, I'm going back for another serving on closing night, Sunday 23rd of October. Don't miss it, this is a rare treat.

White dwarfs, red giants and black holes Our Sun is a star. It was born about six billion years ago from a cloud of swirling dust and hydrogen atoms that through their gravity gathered together.

s the pressure increased and the internal heat reached a critical temperature of around 15 million degrees the atoms in its central core began to fuse together to create helium. Four Hydrogen atoms join together to make one atom of helium and what is known as nuclear fusion takes place inside its centre. This nuclear fusion creates a gigantic amount of energy that we experience as heat and light – and a star is born.

he Sun uses up over 600 million tons of hydrogen every second. In about another five billion years it will use up all its supply of hydrogen fuel and will begin to swell up. As it gets bigger and bigger it will swallow up the inner planets Mercury and Venus and will eventually grow and devour the Earth. The Sun will become a huge red giant star.

S

tars that are bigger than our Sun have an even more gruesome death, they either explode into violent eruptions known as a supernova or collapse and shrink down to a huge white dwarf. The gravitational pull from this white dwarf would be so strong that nothing could escape from it – not even light itself would be fast enough to escape. Light, travelling at 186,000 miles per second would be sucked back into it. It would become a black hole.

I

T

W

S

t will then collapse upon itself, becoming about the size of the Moon but it will still weigh the same amount as it does now. The atoms of the Sun will condense so tightly that a spoonful of material will weigh thousands of tons. It will get hotter than it is now and will emit a dazzling white light; it will become a white dwarf. Where its outer edge finally reached there will be a ghostly cloud called a planetary nebula that will eventually drift away into space. Planetary nebula doesn’t refer to planets, it’s just the name given long ago by early astronomers.

e know all this because we can see other white dwarfs and planetary nebulas throughout the galaxy. Eventually all nuclear activity inside the Sun will cease, its light will go out and it will become a black dwarf, just a lifeless chunk of carbon drifting through space. Strangely most of the carbon will have compressed into millions of huge diamonds littering its surface.

T

he brightest star in the night sky is called Sirius and it has a companion white dwarf circling around it called Sirius B. The gravity on Sirius B is so strong that you would be crushed immediately under your own weight. If a rocket tried to launch from Sirius B it would have to travel at over one million miles an hour to escape the gravitational pull.

he black hole would then begin to suck anything that was in its vicinity toward it. Other stars and planets would be swallowed up adding to its immense gravity and making it more powerful and stronger than it already was. It would be a chain reaction out of control, the more it swallowed the stronger it would become. There would be no escape from a black hole, even if you could travel at the speed of light it would still not be fast enough to escape from its gravitational pull. No one could ever return from a black hole to tell us what’s inside it. o if we can’t see these ‘gateways to hell’ how do we know that they exist? Well when one of them passes in front of back ground stars we can see the light from those stars being distorted as it is pulled into the void.

T

hat’s the good news; the bad news is that it is believed that a huge black hole exists in the centre of our own galaxy and is slowly eating its way towards us. Eventually it may reach us and we will be on the menu as a very tasty morsel.

S V

o sleep tight children everywhere, and don’t let the black hole bite! isit Ken Campbell’s www.kencampbell.info

IndyCar carnage in Las Vegas Britain's Dan Wheldon, who has died in an IndyCar accident in Las Vegas at the age of 33, was one of the most successful drivers in world motorsport. Born in Buckinghamshire, he became the first Englishman to win the Indianapolis 500 since Graham Hill in 1966 when, in 2005, he triumphed in the sport's biggest race. He then repeated the feat in 2011.Wheldon, who lived in Florida, leaves behind wife Susie and young sons Sebastian and Oliver.

No easing off Stoner clinches title at home for Vettel AUTOSALON COIN Sickening finger injury forces Jorge Lorenzo to miss the race and gift title to Stoner

Just a week after cruising to third place in Japan, where Vettel confirmed himself as the 2011 drivers' world champion, the 24-year-old German was untouchable as he drove to his 10th win this year, and 20th of his career. Vettel started second on the grid, but took the lead from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap to pull clear and produce

a flawless drive to the chequered flag.

He came home 12.019sec ahead of Hamilton, who drove a splendidly controlled defensive race to stay ahead of

Vettel's Red Bull team mate Mark Webber. The Australian finished third, ahead of Jenson Button in the second McLaren, and two-time world champion, Spaniard Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari.

Casey Stoner marked his 26th birthday by clinching the MotoGP world title with a fifth successive Australian Grand Prix victory on Sunday but the celebrations were overshadowed by a sickening finger injury to Jorge Lorenzo. The 24-year-old Spaniard was rushed to a Melbourne hospital for emergency plastic surgery after a finger on his left hand was severely injured in a crash during practice before the race at Phillip Island. CricketFest at Cartama Oval You should have been there! The CricketFest at the New Cartama Oval saw a six-a-side round robin tournament of five local teams in ten matches. A tad over seven hours of play saw more than 1,000 runs scored in

100 overs for less than 50 wickets. And not many of those were catches. After all, with only four fielders there are many places the ball can fall harmlessly to ground. The fielders had to try though and much scurrying about was the order of the day. Fast and furious it was – blink and you were sure to miss something. Marbella Riders won all their four matches to lift the trophy with maximum points. Their skipper Nushan took the Best Bowling trophy with his six wickets. Despite being hampered by an injury and

barely able to run, Morly’s onslaught with the bat brought a string of boundaries in the final innings to give him the Best Batting trophy. The Best Fielding trophy went to Tom for his road runner impersonation – who needs other fielders with a Tom in their side? The day passed in a hubbub of chatter and laughter as friends and relatives enjoyed the occasion, not to mention the barbecue, and the children played in the autumn sunshine. To top it all, there followed superb live post match music from Paul Dobie and Danny Morgan, belting out a varied selection of crowd pleasing favourites. Who says that dancing in the pavilion is just not cricket? Like I said, you really should have been there. Back to normal next week. Fuengirola v Mijas Costa, 10:30 start. Coin open golf society play locally at Alhaurin C.O.G.S.made the short trip to Alhaurin for this month’s competition with the sky looking very heavy with cloud, which cleared as the first group left the 1st tee. I always find the course very challenging and some low scores by some of the members reflected that. (I am so tempted to disclose one of them but that would be unfair.)

and Kevin Hepworth. Well done to all, great score.

Nearest the pin in two was won by Mark Edmundson on hole four.

The day’s main competition was won by Ian Robinson with 35 points. Second place on count back was Chris Spoakes with 35 points and in third place with 30 points was Russell Wood. Terry’s par three competition was as follows. Hole 3 Kevin Hepworth, hole 12 Russell Wood, hole 5 Charles Randall and hole 14 Joe King. Thanks again must go to Terry.

Nearest the pin on hole ten without the silly hat was won by Ian Robinson. Longest drive on hole nine was Charles Randall. Team prize with 101 points was Charles Randall, Dell Allwood, Ian Barton

Disastrous away day blues for Malaga! Levante 3 - 0 Malaga Malaga went into the game without Duda and their talisman Baptista. Eliseu was also missing and with Levante's impressive start Malaga knew they would be in for a hard game and so it

shown and Malaga were down to 10 men. The resulting free kick hit the wall and Juanlu collected from five metres out and slotted home. On 40 minutes the game was over

All Sunshine Golf Darts League info is available on www.calahondadistrictdarts.com With the Levante players asking for a red card the ref duly obliged

proved. As early as the 2nd minute Kone could have scored for Levante, a free header put wide. But then after plenty of Malaga pressure it was Levante who went ahead in the 13th minute. With some slack Malaga defending, the ball broke to Balero in the box, his shot deflected off Maresca to leave Cabellero stranded. On 20 minutes Carzola had a freekick saved by Munua as Malaga tried to respond. Disaster struck again on 28 minutes, when a long ball over the Malaga defence left Cabellero racing out to clear it but he appeared to handle outside the box. A red card was

for Malaga, Kone chased a long ball that dropped on the edge of Malaga's box and Ruben failed to clear allowing Kone to nip in and walk the ball into an empty net. Rondon and Seba came on after half time but 10 men Malaga looked a disjointed outfit. Levante had numerous chances to increase their lead, with Elzahar, the main culprit shooting over from 10 yards. Next game is at home to Real Madrid on Saturday at 8pm. A real test and gauge of how far Malaga have come this season! Report by Scott Forbes

Wales considered cheating - Gatland Wales’ coach Warren Gatland has admitted he thought about asking one of his forwards to fake an injury during their World Cup semi-final defeat by France. Prop Adam Jones went off injured after eight minutes and a knock to another prop would have led to uncontested scrums where neither team can push. That would have helped Wales whose pack was reduced to seven men following the dismissal of flanker Sam Warburton. "We discussed it but morally I decided it was not right," said Gatland. "We could have easily done that in the first 25-30 minutes of the game. "But in the spirit of the game, in the spirit of a World Cup semi-finals, I didn't think that was the fairest or the right thing to do."

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has told manager Sir Alex Ferguson he wants to pursue his allegations of racism against Liverpool's Luis Suarez. Evra made the allegations after Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday. Although the fullback feels television replays will prove his claims, Suarez has denied the allegations, saying he was "upset" by the accusation. "I've spoken to Patrice. He is adamant he wants to follow it," said Ferguson. The controversy came at the end of a game which otherwise passed off without incident.

Ministers should release all government documents relating to the Hillsborough disaster, MPs have agreed following a debate in the House of Commons. MP Steve Rotheram, opening the debate, said there had been a campaign to blame Liverpool fans. He called on the prime minister to issue a formal apology. Home secretary Theresa May told MPs the government supported the release of all papers, via an independent panel. Ninety -six Liverpool fans died in the disaster in April 1989.
