MISMANAGEMENT AND POOR LEADERSHIP? - World News
Greece shocks Europe In an unexpected move that shocked Europe, Prime Minister George A. Papandreou announced on Monday that his government would hold a referendum on a new aid package for Greece, putting austerity measures to a popular vote for the first time. The immediate result was that Europe's already shaky financial markets tumbled in early trading on Tuesday, much to the annoyance of all the other EU countries whose leaders had only last week reached a comprehensive agreement to shore up the
euro zone. This included a 50% debt write-off for Greece as well as strengthening Europe's bailout fund. Opinion polls in Greece suggest that most people do not support the deal. Mr Papandreou told a meeting of his governing

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Parties!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
last weekend was spent at the Tamisa where there was a joint husband and wife, 50th birthday party with a 70s theme. The couple had apparently been let down at the last minute by their venue and John Peach and his staff set to and gave them the best party they’d ever had! Glitter balls, disco music and flares were the order of the day and a jolly good time was had by all. In the other room we joined a group of people from the Fuengirola branch of the Royal British legion who were having a dinner and night out. They held a raffle which raised over two hundred euros for the Poppy Appeal and they were a great crowd of people. On Friday I shall be venturing along the road to JK’s on the la Trocha Poligono, behind the la Trocha garage at 12:30 to attend a meeting that is going to discuss what to do if a death occurs. Some people have voiced the opinion that it is morbid but, I think it is far more morbid if your partner dies and all of a sudden you realise you haven’t got a clue what to do and neither have any of your friends and neighbours! I would think that that wouldn’t be so much morbid as utterly terrifying, so a bunch of us will be turning up to listen and learn from the experts. If you live in Fuengirola or Marbella, we’re only 20 minutes up the new roads these days so why not come along and make sure you’re safe in the knowledge of what to do – plus come along and say “Hi” to us at The news! christmas is fast approaching and we are beginning to see what venues have on offer over the festive season. We have negotiated discounts on golf, holidays and now on christmas packages at The Tamisa that I will be telling you about next week. So then, I’ll see some of you on Friday, eh?? You know it makes sense to come along!
Would you know what to do if a loved one dies in Spain? Most of us wouldn’t, so Tracy Burns has got together some experts who will tell us at this vital seminar. Friday 4th November 12:30 JK’s, Poligono Ind. La Trocha, Coin Call 620 374 191 and see page 15 for further info.

Greece shocks Europe There is also concern that the referendum would be unlikely to take place before January, which would create months of uncertainty for the markets. Konstantinos Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, said "We cannot wait until 15th January, personally I do not think we will ever get there." Conservative opposition
parties have accused Mr Papandreou of acting dangerously and are calling for early elections. A confidence vote is due to take place in the Greek parliament on Friday. Mr Papandreou has 153 deputies in the 300 seat parliament, but has faced increasing dissent within his own party as well as through demonstrations across the
country, some of them violent. A spokesman for the centreright New Democracy Party, Yiannis Michelakis, indicated how the confidence vote may turn out. He said a referendum was dangerous, and Mr. Papandreou “has tossed Greece’s future in Europe in the air like a coin”.
Day of the Dead and the florists Officially, November 1st is the Day of the Dead which in all Spanish-speaking countries involves whole families turning out and prettying up their loved ones' graves. As a result, florists take in 30 per cent or so of their year's earnings around this time and this year was no exception. Despite the economic hard times, people bought just as many flowers as usual, unwilling to mar their loved ones' day with something as mundane as belt tightening. But the danger to florists' earnings is coming from an entirely different direction. Cremation – frowned upon here in Spain in the days when the Catholic Church was strong – now accounts for around 25 per cent of all burials and the numbers increase yearly. In Zaragoza, for example, as many people are cremated as are

the number of unemployed rose in the third quarter of this year by 144,700 to 4,978,000 – the worst figure in 15 years and just 22,000 short of the 5,000,000 mark that has haunted the government since the beginning of the year. The figures could not have been revealed at a worse time for Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, the ruling Socialist Party's candidate in the November 20th general election, who is struggling 15 percentage points behind the Partido Popular's Mariano Rajoy. The rise is particularly worrisome because the jobless rate usually drops during the peak tourist season in the summer. It

Eurostat, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening in Spain, as a result of soaring unemployment, wage freezes and the elimination of financial benefits for some people. Only Lithuania, Latvia and Romania have bigger disparities between incomes than Spain. Eurostat figures also show that one out of every three people unemployed in Europe is Spanish.

Island continues to shake Despite the fact that several strong tremors have shaken El Hierro in the Canary Islands each day since Saturday, the local Civil Protection Agency at press time had no plans to evacuate the residents of the area. In all a daily average of 65 underwater tremors have been registered, several as high as 3.9 on the Richter scale. All of them took place out to sea, between 12 and 20 kilometres off the northern coast of El Hierro at a depth of around 23 kilometres.

Police have arrested five of the seven men in two cars who boxed in another car in one of the city’s M-30 tunnels and beat up the two Arab occupants because of a verbal altercation at a traffic light. Balconing incidents mount A 25-year-old tourist was seriously injured last weekend when he jumped from a second floor at a hotel, bringing the number of so-called balconing incidents – three of them fatal – to 29 so far this year. The authorities say most were either drunk or on drugs and while some people deliberately tried to jump from one balcony to another, others seem to have fallen by accident. They said a disturbing element is that some of these incidents were filmed and later posted on the internet. AnsoAin
First abortions in 24 years A newly-opened private clinic has already performed 12 abortions, the first to be carried out anywhere in the province of navarre in 24 years. Anti-abortion sentiment is strong in the province and public hospitals have always referred women seeking abortions to clinics in neighbouring provinces. This year 585 women have had abortions outside the province. However, 11 gynaecologists took a stand in April, sending a letter to the regional government saying “not all doctors object to abortions” and demanded a change in attitude.

Concern over Libya arms stockpile Hours before Nato formally ended its sevenmonth air campaign at one minute to midnight Libyan time (21:59 GMT) on Monday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution drafted by Russia to prevent the proliferation of looted arms amid mounting fears they could fall into the hands of militants, including groups connected to al-Qaeda.
It expresses particular concern about Col Gaddafi's vast stockpile of shoulder-fired surface-toair missiles. Many are old Soviet-style rockets, but they could still pose a threat to passenger aircraft. The resolution calls on Libya's government to take all necessary steps to stop the proliferation of arms, and says neighbouring states should draw up measures to prevent smuggling. Many weapons were
destroyed in Nato operations, but officials said it was not clear how many were still in circulation. The resolution also called on the new Libyan government to destroy chemical weapons in co-ordination with international authorities. Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who was in Tripoli on Monday to mark the end of the mission, said Nato's military forces had prevented a massacre and
saved countless lives. During the seven-month mission, which began on March 19th to protect civilians as Col Gaddafi's forces moved to crush the uprising in the eastern rebel-held city of Benghazi, Nato aircraft flew more than 26,000 sorties, including nearly 10,000 strike missions. More than 1,000 tanks, vehicles and guns were destroyed, along with Col Gaddafi's command and control network.
US cuts off funding to Unesco After the United Nations’ cultural organisation voted strongly in favour of membership for the Palestinians on Monday, a move opposed by Israel and the United States, Washington announced it is cutting its funding to Unesco. Its membership dues provide around a fifth of the organisation's budget.
Of 173 countries voting, 107 were in favour, 14 opposed and 52 abstained. A US law passed in the 1990s allows Washington to cut funding to any UN body that admits Palestine as a full member. The UN Security Council will vote later this month on whether to grant the Palestinians full UN membership. Palestinian
leaders see membership of Unesco as part of a broader push to get international recognition and put pressure on Israel. It is the first UN agency the Palestinians have sought to join since submitting their bid for recognition to the Security Council in September. The US government was due to make a $60m payment to Unesco in November “and
we will not be making that payment," state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told journalists in Washington. The US boycotted Unesco for almost two decades from 1984 for what the state department said was a "growing disparity between US foreign policy and Unesco goals".
Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has urged prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to resign. In an open letter to the daily La Repubblica, Mr di Montezemolo said Italy had reached "the point of no return" and called for a "government of national salvation" to deal with the debt crisis. Mr Berlusconi used to enjoy strong support among Italian business leaders but a growing number have begun calling for his resignation. His image has been tarnished by sex scandals and a string of court cases. Canada
Senator wants polar bear as new emblem
Conservative senator nicole Eaton has said the beaver is no longer fit to be Canada's national emblem, and should be replaced with the polar bear. In a statement to the Senate, Ms Eaton said the polar bear – with its "strength, courage, resourcefulness and dignity" – would be more suitable. Michael Runtz, a natural history professor at Carleton University defended the beaver: “They’re like Canadians, their demeanour is very pleasant, while polar bears inspire fear." LapLand, SwEdEn

Mr Sonoda, who serves as the cabinet office's parliamentary spokesman, appeared nervous and his hands shook as he downed a glass during a televised news conference. The water he drank was taken from puddles under two reactor buildings and then decontaminated before being used for tasks such as watering plants. Another sign of the government's
growing confidence over the plant's safety is that journalists will be allowed to visit the site on November 12th. It will be the first time they have toured the area since the 11th March earthquake and tsunami wrecked the plant, causing partial meltdowns in three of its reactors. A 20km exclusion zone is still in force around the plant, and tens of
thousands of people have had to abandon their homes. The government has given itself until the end of the year to bring the plant to a cold shutdown, when the reactors are stable and the water inside them is no longer boiling. But a preliminary report by a panel of nuclear experts has said fully decommissioning the power station could take 30 years.
Uganda fury at UK aid threat Ugandan presidential adviser John Nagenda has accused the UK of having a "bullying mentality" by threatening to cut aid to countries where homosexuality is illegal. Homosexual acts are illegal in Uganda and most other African countries
where many people see it as violating religious and cultural beliefs. Mr Nagenda said he doubted that the Ugandan parliament would ever approve a bill which proposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts. The bill sparked widespread international condemnation earlier this year. David
Cameron raised the issue of gay rights at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, in Perth, Australia, last week. Some 41 nations within the 54-member Commonwealth have laws banning homosexual acts. Many of these laws are a legacy of British rule.

New attitude Protesters move to adoptions
Legendary guitarist of rock band The Who, Pete Townsend has called on Apple’s iTunes to use its powers to help new bands instead of “bleeding” artists and behaving “like a digital vampire”.
According to an article in the Guardian on Monday, ministers have sought Prince Charles’ consent on at least twelve bills that have been put before Parliament since 2002 – including subjects such as the Olympics, gambling and coroners’ laws.
Prime Minister David Cameron has voiced his concerns over the length of time it is taking certain local authorities to find permanent adoptive homes for those children in their care.
He made his comments during BBC Music’s inaugural John Peel Lecture, named in honour of the late DJ. Townsend also railed against unauthorised filesharing, saying that the internet was “destroying copywrite as we know it. The word ‘sharing’ surely means giving away something you have earned, made, or paid for,” he added. The wild man of rock seems to have gone establishment in his old age!
As the law stands, the government would have to ask the prince’s permission to pass any legislation that could affect his private interests. Clarence House said that this practice was “a longstanding convention which was not about seeking the prince’s personal views on the matters”. David Cameron said that there were no plans in the pipe-line to seek to change the law.
fastest whereas Hackney in the south of England took the longest but their placements tended to last longest. Would-be parents have long complained that they have been rejected for many reasons including whether they are too old, smoke, are overweight or have had past medical problems that have since been successfully treated. One woman said that she was told that they could not adopt a mixed race child as both her husband and herself were white British. They went abroad to adopt but tried for another child in the UK and this time were told that they were now a mixed race family so unless another child came up from the same country as the first, they still would not be allowed to adopt in the UK.
A “league table” has just been released showing that some children are being kept in care from when they are babies until they are over two-and-a-halfyears-old, with an average placement time of two years and seven months. Local authorities are unhappy with the lists being published showing how long placements are taking them and say that they don’t take into account the amount of time and care they take in making sure that a placement is the correct one that will last. York in the north of England was one of the
12 people Are you pondering what you get when you pay your electricity bill? arrested Twelve of the one hundred and fifty protesters gathered outside the Houses of Parliament on Monday evening to demonstrate about new laws involving squatters’ rights were arrested after scuffles broke out between police and demonstrators. Police had asked them to move as there is a law that forbids gatherings within one kilometre of parliament but they refused to go. The twelve in question were among 40 demonstrators trying to claim that they were holding a Halloween gathering. The demonstration followed an announcement by Justice Secretary Ken Clarke in respect of plans to reform the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill, to allow up to one-year sentences to be handed down to those found guilty of illegally occupying (squatting in) a residential property.

Around fifty of the demonstrators from the tent city occupying the space outside St. Paul’s Cathedral marched further into the city on Monday night dressed as zombie bankers to mark Halloween, stopping traffic in the area around the Bank of England.
However, they later returned to the St. Paul’s site.
Meanwhile, Glasgow City Council are going to court to get an eviction order against anti-capitalist protesters who have been staying in the city centre’s George Square.

St. Paul’s dean resigns The Right Reverend Graeme Knowles, dean of St. Paul’s, has resigned saying that his position has become untenable due to the tent city – now with over 200 tents – being camped outside the main entrance of the church in Paternoster Square. He said that the past fortnight had been a “very trying and stressful time” for him and the protesters had refused to leave the square, despite talks with several members of the church, meaning that the dean had to make the decision to close the doors to visitors for several days due to health and safety reasons. On Tuesday, the City of London Corporation went to court to have the “Occupy London Stock Exchange” protesters removed. UK
Tougher gun powers Theresa May will shortly be announcing plans to toughen up the laws on gang warfare and gun crime on the streets of the UK. There will be a crack down on those supplying guns that subsequently get used in gang and other violent crimes resulting in a life sentence in jail once the new laws have been approved. The maximum sentence for supplying a gun is currently ten years. Police chiefs have confirmed that there are a small number of guns that have been used repeatedly in different crimes by different gangs. They added that there are now people operating businesses where guns are loaned or leased to criminals. UK

Own goal for Russian? Russian billionaire and Chelsea football manager Roman Abramovich has appeared before London Commercial Court judge Mrs Justice Gloucester stating that allegations by exiled Russian oligarch Boris Berezovski, 65, are “wholly without merit”. Berezovski is sueing 45year-old Abramovich for billions after claiming that he had betrayed him and intimidated him into selling shares in Russian oil company Sibneft “for a mere 1.3 million dollars (£800.000) which, he claims was well under their true value. He is alleging breach of trust and contract and is claiming £3 billion in damages. Abramovich claims that he has already paid Berezovski “ a substantial amount of money” and will not pay him any more. He added that he owes him no more “in law or in honour”. Abramovich gave evidence in Russian that was translated by a court official translator into English. The trial continues.

Local News Clamp down on illegal building work Mijas town hall say they open ten files in a week for building work carried out without permission. To avoid unnecessary delays to control illegal building in Mijas, local police have been given instructions to immediately paralyse and seal any illegal building work within the Mijas and Mijas Costa municipality, whether it be for lack of a building license or for non compliance with a license. After the police stop a construction, they will now give the offending culprits just five days to show proof of having a license before the planning department opens a file against them. If no proof is presented, then the building sites will be shut down and sealed by the police. The Mijas local police inspections are to curb an
ever increasing amount of illegal building work especially in rural areas. Councillor Manuel Navarro said “It seems that the general idea is that it is not necessary to obtain a building license when the law obliges those who build to obtain one.” The local police must also now ensure that all building sites have a clearly visible sign showing the building site licence number and other relevant details. A study of the files in the Mijas planning department, has revealed that many promoters and property owners have finished building their houses or extensions without a license
even though they were caught by the local police.

30 mayors in the courts
Antonio Marín Lara, Ronda
Since the construction boom went bust, cases of building-related corruption have been flooding the courts. Eleven mayors or former mayors have already been tried and sentenced and another 19 cases are under way or about to start soon. Since the beginning of last year, six former mayors have been sentenced, four cases have been filed and three mayors have been absolved. The mayors already sentenced are from Benalmadena, Gaucin, Canillas de Aceituno, Canillas de Albaida, Carratraca, Competa, Marbella, Ojen, Salares, Valle de Abdalajis and Viñuela. Four of the mayors belong to the Partido Popular, three to the Socialist Party, two to the
Partido Andalucista and two independents. Of the 19 awaiting trial, the majority have been accused of handing out licences to build on land not suitable for development. However, the former mayors of Marbella, Estepona, Alcaucin, Ronda and the current mayor of Alhaurin el Grande all face charges of having accepted bribes. Those tried and found guilty so far have been fined and banned from holding public office for the number of years decided by the court. Where prison sentences have been handed down, they rarely exceed one year.

Prostitutes’ clients to be fined Seville City Council passed a law last week by which the prostitutes’ clients can be fined from €750 for the first offence and up to €3,000 for successive offences. Since the end of August, when the council announced the proposed legislation, the police have identified more than 100 prostitutes, of whom 11 were in the country illegally. A council spokesman said the aim was to eradicate the sexual exploitation of women and punish their pimps and clients. The council’s social services department has been approaching the women without police presence to tell them about the programmes available to help them give up the game.
As part of its efforts to save money, the town council has reduced the number of land lines by 20 per cent and restricted the use of mobile phones. Councillor Manuel Arroyo said that staff can now only make outside calls for work-related matters. He said the new measure should save the council €2,000 a month. He also revealed how the former Socialist council had wasted money on things like trips to Brazil “with the excuse of looking for investors”. HUELVA
Rumania sends in teachers The Rumanian government has sent four teachers to ensure that some 160 children of the strawberry pickers in the province do not forget their language or culture. Patient squats in hospital Authorities at the Juan Ramon Jimenez hospital in the provincial capital are taking steps to evict a patient who was declared well enough to leave after an operation four months ago. He refused to go and was allowed to stay in a single room while social workers tried to solve the problem. One member of staff said the room is now “like a pigsty” and a health risk for other patients and staff. No reason was given for the man’s reluctance to leave.

One of the most celebrated sea battles of all time 206 years ago off a certain cape along the coast, the 19th century equivalent of the Battle of Britain took place except, of course, this was a sea battle and not an aerial one. The cape is called Trafalgar and the importance of what happened there cannot be under-estimated. Fr. David Worsley Written by Like it's 20th century counterpart, the Battle of Trafalgar had the effect of crippling the enemy's ambitions to invade Britain across the English Channel. Napoleon's aim was to control the waterways into the North Sea by a sea invasion and they were thwarted by the tactical brain of Horatio, Lord Nelson. The battle took place on 21st October, 1805 and so, on 21st October this year (Trafalgar Day), a party of British Legion members left Mollina for Cape Trafalgar to commemorate this victory which forced Napoleon to concentrate on land invasions further east – just as the Battle of Britain forced another dictator in Europe to do the same in the 1940s and with the same devastating results to their ambitions. It was a beautiful if windy day and I had
prepared a Trafalgar Day Service based on one to be used in Exeter Cathedral and our party walked the mile or so to the cape and held the service on the rocks before casting into the sea a wreath to commemorate those who died. It was the first time I had been there and leading such a service was moving and memorable. The walk was for me something of a challenge, but with a few pit-stops I managed it! After leaving the cape we spent the rest of the day in the beautiful city of Cadiz from where the combined French and Spanish fleets had sailed to be intercepted by Admiral Nelson's fleet 206 years ago. Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson applied new thinking to the conduct of the Battle of Trafalgar whereby instead of attacking the enemy in a
long line parallel to them, he came at them with two parallel lines of ships, at right angles, thereby giving the Napoleonic gunners less to fire at. The disadvantage of such an attack was the inability of the British fleet to return fire until they had cut the Franco/Spanish fleet in half and rounded on the two halves, but the Franco/Spanish fleet had been blockaded in Cadiz by the British for months and had had little opportunity to exercise their gunnery crews who were no match for the British. Not only that, but they were lacking in leadership. The French admiral, PierreCharles Villeneuve had already experienced defeat at the hands of Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and was decidedly reluctant to leave Cadiz and face Nelson again! Napoleon did not take too
kindly to this and replaced Villeneuve with another admiral, but before the replacement could arrive from France and to avoid disgrace, Villeneuve decided, without much enthusiasm (and even less from his captains!), to leave
Cadiz in the hope of outrunning Nelson, which of course, he didn't. The French were in many ways authors of their own downfall in this as, some years prior to this, the policy of the French
Revolution on the back of which Napoleon declared himself (and crowned himself ) emperor, had in fact considered the military elite (including the most able admirals) as aristocrats and removed their heads.

A bit of a let down
Voting on hope, not substance
W
J
ust two weeks ago, the Basque terrorist group ETA declared a “definitive cessation of violence”. For about three days, the talking heads on telly couldn’t waffle on about anything else and the printed press used hundreds of gallons of ink to analyse the statement to death. Politicians from all parties cautiously welcomed the news but put the matter on the back burner until after the November 20th election.
T
he initial reaction to their statement must have given the few remaining members of the group still at large much satisfaction – until the questions started. “When are they going to lay down their arms?” and “When are they going to disband?” were the main ones.
H
owever, as the days passed it became increasingly obvious that the answers depended on the pardon and release of the 700 or so ETA members (etarras) in jails both here and in France. And that’s when the different associations of victims of ETA muscled in on the scene. There are hundreds of thousands of people out there whose lives were shattered by an ETA car bomb or bullet. A very few of them – like former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar – had survived attempts on their lives, but the vast majority are the parents, spouses, children and extended families of the more than 850 people murdered by ETA.
W
hen these people start moving the whole world hears about it. There was a subtle change in press coverage, which began to focus on the harm and pain caused by these coldblooded killers. All of a sudden the politicians realised that the etarras in jail were actually paying for the crimes they had committed and started muttering about them having to stay there until they served out their sentences. The victims’ associations are demanding that they repent and ask the families of their victims to pardon them before their sentences can be reviewed. One Basque from the pro-
independence left-wing Bildu coalition actually had the nerve to say that those members of the security forces who had tortured and killed etarras should also ask their “victims” to pardon them. Every etarra detained has eventually alleged that he/she was tortured. My abhorrence of torture and police brutality led me to actively collaborate with Amnesty International for many years, especially when I lived in Venezuela. What I can't tell you about methods of torture and extrajudicial execution isn't worth knowing and I’m sure that no etarra was ever subjected to most of them. I'm also sure that the people who detained the etarras didn’t handle them with kid gloves and probably put the boot in once or twice to avenge all the police and Guardia Civil who have been killed by the group.
O
ur Bildu friend was referring to the Anti-terrorist Liberation Groups, or GAL, who belonged to but acted outside of the regular security forces between 1983 and 1987. Their objective was to eliminate as many etarras and their sympathisers as possible both here and in France. They eventually killed 23 people, some of whom had nothing to do with ETA, before three national newspapers exposed them. I leave it up to the readers to decide who has the bloodier hands.
M
eanwhile other members of the pro-ETA Bildu coalition have been stomping around like little Nazis since their heroes issued the statement, acting as if they were the masters of an already independent Basque Country. Their behaviour has not gone unnoticed and could lead Basques to vote for anyone who is not pro-ETA in the general election. That's very bad news for the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) which governed the region for decades until the Socialists pulled a fast one on them after the last regional election, forming an alliance with the PP to take over the regional government. The PNV's recent sucking up to Bildu – calculated to win votes on November 20th – could backfire.
ith less than three weeks to go before the general elections, Spaniards still don’t know what they will be voting for. All they believe in is that the Partido Popular (PP) cannot do any worse than the Socialists in trying to harness a runaway economy battered by a nearly 22 per cent unemployment rate and a fiscal crisis that doesn’t seem to want to go away. The PP still hasn’t given us any concrete formulas on what its candidate Mariano Rajoy plans to do. All we’re getting is a vague list of pledges, without any explanations on how to go about carrying them out, and that should be of the utmost concern for voters.
O
n Monday, Rajoy announced a string of ambiguous proposals he says go to the heart of whipping this economy back into shape, which are focused on decreasing public spending, cutting taxes, and introducing obscure mechanisms to foment jobs. Sounds good, but where is the substance? Many PP members reportedly voted for the document at the executive committee meeting this week without having seen any of the proposals beforehand.
T
he PP leader has also not given any specific figures on how he plans to bring down the deficit from 6 per cent to the EU-standard of 3 per cent by 2013 as Spain has promised Brussels it would do. There are some inside the PP who believe that the deficit will actually soar to 7 or even 8 per cent by next year. In order to keep their pledge to trim the deficit to 4 per cent by next year, a Rajoy-led government would have to make some €30 billion in savings. So cuts in public administration do seem to be on the horizon. Rajoy said that he wants to merge certain ministries and eliminate some agencies to make government more efficient. But again, he declines to say what he plans to do with the thousands of public sector employees who will be affected.
M
any are wondering whether the PP will do a repeat of 1996 when José María Aznar and his economy minister Rodrigo Rato were swept into office promising generous cuts in personal income tax. But once they got to Moncloa, they postponed that pledge by blaming Felipe González’s Socialists for leaving them with a disaster in the country’s financial books. Rajoy can already begin to blame the Socialists for zero growth in the third quarter, conveniently overlooking that many other
EU countries also had nil or little growth and that we are all heading toward an imminent global recession.
S
ocialist candidate Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba has challenged Rajoy to keep the wealth tax intact – another measure the PP wants to repeal. The Socialists want to use the money, including a special bank tax, to go towards creating a fund that will help businesses hire workers and beef up the tanking public health system. They say that it is time for wealthy families to foot the bill, as similar measures are being proposed in the United States, France and other nations. Paid social services might also be heading for the cutting block, which is another direction that Rajoy has been cryptic about.
T
he most conservative Catholic sectors of the PP have been pestering Rajoy to rescind the liberal abortion law that was passed by the Socialists in which girls from the age of 16 can legally obtain the procedure without having to get formal consent from their parents or guardians. Again, Rajoy has been as clear as dishwater as to what he will do should he win the November 20th elections. But radical changes in laws from one administration to another cost money, not to mention the hurt they do to the country’s business climate.
T
he “populares” are leading the Socialists in the polls by 14 per cent and if this holds true they will win a majority of seats in Parliament that will keep them from having to seek out parliamentary coalitions with regional parties as governments have had to do in the past. Voters are going to the polls with a lot of ambiguity in the air. What is scary is that many will be voting on hope and not for any specific formulas. Desperation is the theme of this year’s election but unfortunately such irrational voting typically ushers in irrational governments.

Community News e Tamisa Golf Hotel pulls out all the Shock! Horror! stops after birthday couple were let down Witches and Going to the Tamisa Golf Hotel for a quiet evening last Saturday turned into a trip back in time to the 70s with everything associated with it. Husband and wife, Malcolm and Jackie (main picture middle and right) had been let down by the venue they had booked for their joint 50th birthdays at the last minute but called Tamisa Golf Hotel and spoke to owner John Peach to see if there was anything they could do. The theme for the party was the 70s and pretty much everyone had dressed up in costumes, complete with long wigs from the era for the men, flares, headbands and the whole look for the event, as you can see in the pictures. Even the cake (left) had disco dancers around the edge and a glitter ball on the top! Jackie says: “ We would like to thank through your paper, John Peach and his fantastic staff for making
warlocks descend on bowls club Last Sunday morning in lovely weather, all manner of warlocks, witches and wickens turned out at Mijas Bowls Club frightening the normal bowlers away and taking their lunch which these imposters thoroughly enjoyed! The club had been decorated with Halloween bunting by Carol and Roberto and looked very festive which was probably what attracted them in the first place.
our party such a great success. The theme of the 70's carried through from decorations, cake and great 70's music played by DJ Laurie Scott who kept the floor full from the first to the last tune! We had 79 guests in total from the UK, Holland and Spain and each and every one of them
said itwas a party they will remember for a long time. Anybody who has not yet been to the Tamisa Golf Hotel must put it on their to-do list, they will not be disappointed.” She added that she couldn’t have done a better job herself if she’d had a year to plan it.
tremendous efforts for stepping in when they were most needed and making the couple’s dreams of a memorable 50th party come true.
To play you had to have a witch’s hat and wear something black. It was witches against warlocks. The game was full of mischief with the ladies having lots of advantages over the warlocks – with spells and hexes, jumping about, laying on the green and trying to put the men off. It was such a laugh and guess what? Yes, the witches won! After the game there was
a quiz and a lunch of BBQ chicken or pork chop cooked by Don, plus jacket potato and salad cooked by Carol and Gladys. Dessert was bread pudding cooked by Maureen or cheese cake. Prize for best dressed warlock was won by Tony and the best dressed witch was Margaret. The quiz winners were table 2, Sheila and Roy, Tig and Aleks and Dorothy. Rob Robinson welcomed back some old members (those that he could recognise anyway!) and thanked all those who made the day so enjoyable. Club Charity and Pleasure Modern art copies help Butterfly children give cheque to Age Concern A fundraising art auction at the British School of Marbella has raised €312 for a children's charity. Youngsters at the school swapped pencils for paintbrushes during a special Art Week to create dozens of paintings that were then auctioned off to parents recently. During the week more than 70 pupils between the ages of two and nine were taught by professional painters before imitating
the styles of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse and Jackson Pollock. Head Teacher Sian Andrews said: “The work this year is of an extremely high quality and our school could easily be mistaken for a room in the Tate Modern. The children really enjoyed Art Week and the opportunity to sell their work during the exhibition. They are beginning to feel like 'real artists' and so they
should.” The money is being donated to The Butterfly Children Spain, which has a charity shop in Marbella's Old Town. Children with Epidermolysis Bullosa have skin as fragile as a butterfly's wing which can blister at the slightest touch. Normal day-to-day life can cause constant pain and scarring which can lead to eventual disfigurement, disability and early death.
At a recent coffee morning Age Concern president Eileen Dry was pleased to accept a donation of €500 from CAP vice-president Jill Cawley. Eileen thanked all CAP members for their support.
Club Charity and Pleasure is a friendly, social organisation based in El Paraiso, Estepona, meeting at 11 a.m. each Wednesday morning at The Oak, El Paraiso Barronal, for coffee. There is often a speaker. Weekly activities include bridge, whist and bowls,
and members have recently started a choir.
Other events and excursions include visits to the theatre and exhibitions; lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast; mystery trips, etc. A full programme of events is published in CAP’s free quarterly magazine, and regularly updated online. They also raise money for local charities, mainly Alzheimer’s, Aprona, Aspandem and Cudeca.
New members are welcome – annual membership is only €15. Why not go along for coffee? You will be assured of a warm welcome. For more information contact Denise Ghazi, president, on 952 810989, or visit www.capsonlinemag.net.

No increase in road e right and the wrong way tax or plus valia 2012 of doing things Mijas Town Hall has decided not to increase the charges for road tax and the plus valia tax in 2012. The measure has been included in the municipal budget and will be approved before the end of the year. In both cases, this means that in 2012, citizens will pay the same tax for cars and motorbikes as in 2011, “It is a decision that fits perfectly into the policy of the local government that is, to do more with less money”, commented Mario Bravo, councillor for Economy and Taxes. Road tax will be between €18.95 and €168.00, depending on the size of the motor and for motorbikes between €6.60 and €90.90. Likewise the plus valia tax (municipal capital gains) will stay between 3% and 3,7% depending on the length of time paid for. The estimated income from road tax in 2012 will be around three million euros and the amount from plus valia will be around €2,5 million. In keeping with Mayor Angel Nozal’s electoral promises, the town hall will
also discount IBI (rates) for all residents with property who are registered on the Mijas Padrón by the 31st December 2011. This by-law will be approved as soon as possible in order for it to be applicable to next years taxes. From town hall data, the average rates are around €400 so that will mean an average saving of €40.00 per household. Councillor Mario Bravo said, “Citizens already find it hard enough to pay rates as it is” justifying the new measure not only as an electoral commitment but also as a decision based on the future economy of Mijas. “Even though it would seem that we will be receiving less money with the measures approved, as we are inviting all residents to register on the list of inhabitants (padrón), the town hall will receive the funds for residents from the central government that they really deserve.” The income from rates for the year 2012 is estimated at €38,5 million.

Clearly, the right way of going on in life is to know what to do if something goes wrong. The wrong way can lead to you being helpless at a time when you can least afford to be. Tel: 951 315 240 To that end, I would say that the more you can learn about how to handle a situation before it becomes necessity is the right way, and therefore The News is backing a seminar this Friday, starting at 12:30 pm, to be held in JK’s in Coin on the subject of what to do if someone dies. Yes, I know it’s in Coin but we’re not in the back of beyond, it’s very easy to get to up here now and JK’s is just a little way off the motorway so no excuses for not coming along and getting the knowledge you may one day need – read on!! This will not be a hard sell seminar and, if you want information on companies that offer services, it will be up to you to come and ask afterwards – no-one will be chasing you. I have lived here for fifteen years and have dealt with a death that happened in a hospital. Maureen had suffered a heart attack and didn’t survive for more than a couple of days. As I said last week, there was no will
and no family that anyone was aware of. The body was taken to a viewing room in the hospital’s mortuary and before I had time to even identify the body (it could have been anyone under that sheet) a duty funeral director came in, shoved a form to be signed under my nose and made me liable to pay €1800 for the cremation of the body. I have since found out that this was a tad expensive. I could have used a funeral director of my choice but I had no idea what to do at that time and it turns out that most of us living here in Spain don’t either! Speaking at the seminar will be Tracy Burns who has worked for a local Coin funeral director for the past four years, organising funerals, liaising with religious ministers and dealing with everything that goes with a funeral – including the cancellation of a loved one’s passport, for example. Tracy will tell you where you can be cremated or buried and how long you can take to do it. Most
people think you only have 24 hours here – wrong! There is time allowed for your relatives to get here from different parts of the world. There are very different procedures for people who die in hospital compared to those who die at home and Tracy will explain how you can choose who you use and not be got by the vultures like I did! Caroline MacFarlane and the Venerable David Sutch will talk about Christian services and how they can be adapted to suit your wishes. They will explain that they will, wherever possible, include what you wish to say about your loved one at the service and they are there to help you through the process. John Sutton is a qualified solicitor and deals with the legal side of things. He will tell you what to do about wills, death duties that may or may not have to be paid, how any inheritances would need to be divided and the best ways of doing
that, and how you should deal with banks if you have had joint accounts or oneperson-only personal accounts. Kath Dillon is a financial advisor dealing with finances after a death and will be able to tell you about options for investment of inherited monies. Some things you can deal with before a death happens but it is incredibly important that all of us: husbands as well as wives, children, relatives and neighbours should all have a clue about what to do if the worst happens. Everybody who doesn’t know, or has an inkling they don’t, should come along to this seminar – I don’t know and I will be there on Friday too! JK’s is on the Poligono La Trocha, behind the La Trocha petrol station. If you need any further information or directions call Tracy on 620 374 191. See you there! Written by Kym Wickham, Exec. Cadogan stopped accepting new bookings at 5pm yesterday but managing director Neil Chapman said the brand was not going into administration.
“We are saying thank you and goodbye,” Mr Chapman told the UK trade magazine Travel Weekly.
The Care Agency is pleased to have played a part in the official launch of the street pastors programme by the church in its multidenominational form. Although this programme will be new in Gibraltar, the project is supported by the U.K. Home Office currently running in over 100 locations. It involves the church in partnership with the government and the police. The purpose is to provide teams of people who are trained to be able to help individuals in need as a result of being drunk or after substance misuse – all too prevalent in modern society. The experience in the U.K. is that when there has been a presence of street pastors, particularly in the early hours of the morning, there has been a decrease of disorder associated with unsocial behaviour. Commenting on this initiative, the minister responsible for the Care Agency, the Hon J Netto stated: “Having such a service in Gibraltar would further enhance/dovetail with our own programmes quite well in reaching out more effectively to more individuals. “I would also like to thank Rev F Patron for his hard work and vision in bringing this service to Gibraltar. Finally, I would also like to thank His Lordship the Mayor for allowing us to officially launch the programme in the City Hall.”

Motoring through red mountains and white rocks
Written by Jean Joss
The old smugglers route above Estepona is a wonderful drive in spectacular scenery – just don't forget to bring your camera!
T
he peace of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range offers a welcome contrast to the bustling coastal strip below and it is easily accessible by car, you don't need to have a four-wheel drive unless you fancy a bit of offroading further up. Bermeja is Spanish for red – not scarlet red like rojo, but the russet gingery red of earth rich in iron oxide. These mountains were volcanic and rise to an average height of around 1,000 metres above sea level. What makes them unusual is how near they are to the coastline, a mere 10 kilometres, and you can drive to the top in under an hour.
Rob
’ s n e tS ev
R
oad numbering is often rather confusing out here but this yellow route (the MA8301 or MA557 depending on which map you are looking at) is unmistakable, rising as it does from the centre of Estepona straight up into the empty space of the mountains. Follow the Avenida de Andalucia (the inner bypass) keeping a wary eye out for the traffic lights near Mercadona where the right turn is signposted Genalguacil. Negotiate the speed bumps through the urbanisation, cross over the motorway and keep heading upwards into a different world – that's all there is to it!
A
s you climb the scenery just gets better and better, swathes of pine trees line the road, their gaps giving tantalising glimpses of the sea below, and eagles and vultures soar high in the blue sky (do pick your day for this drive, it's obviously not at its best in rain or mist!). After about half an hour – depending on how many stops you make to admire the views – you arrive at the Puerto de Peñas Blancas, the pass of the white rocks, leading through to the Serrania de Ronda. There is a large carparking area here with information boards about the wildlife and the surrounding scenery and it
‘s
is the ideal spot for taking pictures since you get stunning views in all directions. The sheer space and grandeur of nature is breathtaking.
T
he main road from the pass goes to the right, winding round to Jubrique and down into the Genal Valley where you can stop to admire the river before climbing out of the valley to join the Gaucin to Ronda road. Up to the left is an unmade track (it is apparently passable in a normal vehicle but I can't vouch for the fact – last time we were here was in our very low-slung classic Porsche so were unwilling to risk trying it!). This leads
up to the highest point, Los Reales where there is a picnic area and the inevitable “mirador”. There is also a walk through the pine forest, marked Paseo de los Pinsapos, the pinsapo being a protected species of pine tree that is unique to this area. Or, of course, you can just turn round and drive back down to the coast and have lunch in a restaurant!
W
hether you make it a full day or a half-day, driving into such an unspoiled area recharges the batteries and underlines, once again, how fortunate we are to have such a variety of choice in Andalucia.

Tintin and Snowy arrive in Coin
Most will remember the intrepid pair, Tintin pronounced Tantan in French) and his dog Snowy (Milou in the original version in French) from the cartoon strips and books by Belgian artist Georges Rémi who wrote under the name of Hergé. The film is Live Motion Capture animation, based on the movements of the actors who include Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott), Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis (Gollum), Simon Peg and Nick Frost. It is directed by Stephen Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson.
purchases a model replica of a ship called the Unicorn, and is swiftly set upon by various shady characters who demand to purchase it from him and hint at numerous mouthwatering secrets. His interest is piqued, and together with faithful terrier Snowy, he sets off on a mission to uncover the ship’s secret. Along the way he meets the drunken seafarer Captain Archibald Haddock (Andy Serkis), crosses paths with detectives Thomson and Thompson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost), and uncovers a spine-tingling tale of lost treasure and the legendary pirate Red Rackham (Daniel Craig). An anarchic downhill chase, involving the unleashing of a rampaging river and destruction of most of a Moroccan city is a particular stand out – it’s

Pógs big hit night Audition Notice for the Coast’s newest band Like a phoenix from the ashes the new Steve Nelson Band went down an absolute storm on Saturday night at Pógs and are now earmarked as regulars for the Pógs 5.30 Sunday Session. This is the newest band on the Costa del Sol who launched with a bang only last week. Three of the band, Colin Still, Paco Bertholet and Steve Nelson had previously played together with the well known ShackAttack band. The introduction of Dave Heavyside completes the new rock quartet who are currently performing under the working title of The New Steve Nelson Band. Putting out enthusiastic covers of classic rock numbers from; Santana, Steely Dan, Bryan Adams, Eric Clapton and
Dire Straits, it was just a great show that will only get better. The mood at Pógs was excellent – lots of grins and big smiles from both the band and the punters who turned out in force. Bass player Dave Heavyside hopes to open up the band’s close harmony side, with US west coast sounds from the 60's and 70's – Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, James Taylor, The Eagles and so on. Sprinkle on this a liberal dose of Beatles and add a dash of the cool blues, courtesy of lead guitarist Colin Still and you have a magic mix. Colin, after a year of sitting on a shelf somewhere, was in fine form and obviously glad to be back on stage. Pógs draws a mixed

Not so Contagious
By Amy Thomas

ust to let you know, the “Movies to watch out for” section on this page, has nothing to do with me, because I would never advise you guys to watch “Contagion”. No one should waste their time or money on going to see such a boring movie. It´s one of those apocalyptic “Oh no! We´re all going to die!” movies that America uses to scare people. Well, it doesn´t scare me – what scares me is that people actually think that this is a good movie!
MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
e Ides Of March Directed by: George Clooney, Starring: George Clooney, Ryan Gosling It's tricky these days to make political thrillers. As an audience we have over the years moved on from finding conspiracy theories and the sacrifice of principles to ambition as anything other than the norm. Our collective disbelief and cynicism means that it's pretty difficult to make a film about the idealistic politician who loses his or her principles in the pursuit of power because we don't really believe that such a person can exist – and if such
a character does take centre stage in the plot then we just know that it ain't going to be long before the juggernaut of ambition leads to the great sell-out. Here, in Clooney's fourth film as a director, the story revolves around a variation on the familiar theme – how the guys behind the politicians sell out so they can get their man elected. Stephen Myers (Gosling) is the young and idealistic press secretary for the campaign to get Mike Morris
T
(Clooney) elected as the democratic candidate for the next presidential race. All Morris has to do is beat another Democratic hopeful, Ted Pullman (Mike Mantell) and he will be heading to the White House. Cue for smart dialogue and political twists and turns – will Gosling's character be let down by Morris, will he be seduced into abandoning the campaign? And does he fall foul of dirty politics? The movie sets out to shed light on to what goes on during a
political campaign, and Clooney is, as ever, convincing enough to make you wish he would actually run for president. It's not up to the crackling insights and heady dialogue of West Wing, but it's enjoyable, well acted, with a weighty cast and clips along pretty smartly – well worth a trip to the cinema. Clooney co-wrote and coproduced the film – no word as to whether he did the onset catering!

here is nothing original about “Contagion”. If you want to see a movie about a lethal virus whipping out the planet, believe me, there are far better ones than “Contagion”. Wolfgang Petersen´s 1995 “Outbreak” about a deadly airborne virus was very scary and plausible, the characters and story were believable and there was even some humour – which is necessary when the story is so serious. I have to admit that I even enjoyed “28 Days” more than “Contagion”, at least it had a bit more umph in it – and disturbingly good special effects.
E
verything that could possibly be wrong with this movie, was wrong. It starts on “Day 2” of the epidemic, when Paltrow leaves Hong Kong for the US and pretty much infects anyone she comes into contact with. That is another thing I don´t get about this movie, it doesn´t explain how people contract the virus, is it airborne, is it through blood, etc – it´s never explained, one minute someone is ok and the next they are dead. It´s ridiculous!

nce Paltrow is back in the US, she infects the whole town and the majority of the world with this mysterious virus, to which some people are immune and others aren´t. The government and CDC´s part is just boring and pointless, as is the whole movie – at one point they send someone to Hong Kong to investigate where the virus
originated and then she ends up disappearing (and no one seems to care). I mean, wouldn´t the government be concerned if they sent an employee overseas to investigate something and they never returned, especially when it is such an important matter? Don´t even ask me what happened to Kate Winslet, I don´t know if she lived or died, all I know was she got infected, but even that wasn´t clear.
M
att Damon´s part as Paltrow´s widower didn´t seem to go anywhere. He spends most of his time dragging his daughter around, and all she did was mope. Which brings us to Jude Law, who plays the part of a paranoid journalist – by the way, what is going on with Jude Law´s teeth?
S
o, that sums up the movie – such as it is. The supposed epidemic goes on for 150 odd days, 26 million people die and yet none of this fazes you at all, because it´s so badly put together.
A
fter sitting through the whole hour and forty minutes, I was hoping that when it went back to “Day 1” and explained how Paltrow got infected, it was going to be one of those “Oh my God!” hand over your mouth type twists moments or something. No! It was thirty seconds , if that and it was a very lame explanation. I got the feeling that the director was like: “Hey, how do you want to finish this?” and a gaffer said “Just take a shot of a bat and some animals, that should do it!”
H
onestly, avoid this movie like the plague!

Watch out this week for financial temptations that are ready to throw you off course. There will be a major opportunity for a large increase in personal wealth and possessions soon - keep your feet firmly on the ground and tread cautiously so that you can sort out the wheat from the chaff. The key is to differentiate between what is a temptation and what is an opportunity.
You may be asked to give something up so that something new can enter your life that will deepen your experience within a relationship. If you remain open to another person’s influence you will be able to extend your vision and improve every area of your life. It is all about doing things the right way instead of taking the easy path. Signs of financial growth are on the horizon, keep on the ball. If you don’t ask you don’t get and this seems to apply to you this week - others just can’t say no to you at the moment. There is nothing more important than the truth and being true to yourself, you will even suffer at times because your choices are not going to please everyone. Some area of your life needs a clean up - you need to share with another a trickle of honesty to help sort it out.
With so many planets huddling in Scorpio it brings with it an opportunity to increase depth and feelings within close relationships. You are being given a clear canvas to create the type of life you really desire, free from the ruts and routines that have held you hostage for so many years. You have been floating on the outskirts for too long, get ready to jump back into the centre once again.
You have the ability to make extremely powerful improvements to the lives of others by being willing to follow your natural leadership abilities. Positivity shines out of you now as you place the building blocks of prosperity in position. Showing others how determined and objective you can be will produce great results. This is a busy time where you will be in high demand.
Your powers of negotiation come into their own with circumstances falling more in your favour if you are assertive and stipulate your bottom lines. You will get faster results and be able to get to the bottom of how someone is feeling if you stay direct without leaving any wiggle room for them to hide in. Honest talks lead to greater awareness and will enable you to get to the bottom of something.
A sense of security is seeping into your world after a breakthrough, giving you a feeling of steadiness concerning a necessary change. You may not have been sure how this change would feel but there is an air of strength within you that makes you feel rooted to your decisions. A friend could lend a helping hand and step up to the plate when you really need it; you have a lot rd September 23 of support around you. nd October 22

Relationship issues come to the fore to prove that you have been right all along; this confirmation will allow you to trust and take the relationship to its ultimate potential. over and over again in your mind so that you get it right. The important thing to remember right now is that you are not alone – far from it, all you have to do is ask for help and it will be there in bucket loads.
Dependency and having to rely upon another does not sit well with you as you prefer to be independent and self sufficient. However, recently times have demanded that you lean on someone else’s shoulder for a while. This doesn’t mean that you can’t give feely to others as there are many ways of giving. Abundance and independence are coming your way - it is just around the corner.
Subtlety brings many rewards this week. It doesn’t mean that you are weak to avoid a confrontation but rather the opposite - it means you know you can get more done with a calmer approach. You may hear a lot of talk from someone but the real question is can you rely upon them? There is a silver lining in a dark cloud and the answer you are looking for is right under your nose.
Great for those cold, dark evenings. A warming dish with one of the quintessential flavours of winter, the chestnut. This ingredient adds a delicate and sweet flavour to the dish and it is ideal for Bonfire Night if you’re having one. Recipe supplied by Ian Wooldridge, Head Chef at Kimbridge Farm, Romsey, UK.
Beef & Chestnut Casserole Ingredients:
● 50gms butter ● 100gms smoked streaky bacon, cut into strips ● 4 tbsps plain flour ● 1 tsp salt ● ½ tsp ground black pepper ● 2 tsp ground nutmeg ● 800gms stewing steak (diced) ● 3 large onions, peeled & sliced ● 2 cloves garlic, minced or finely diced ● 4 large carrots, peeled & sliced ● 2 sticks celery, chopped ● 250ml red wine
(Serves 4)
● 500ml beef stock ● 2 tbsps tomato puree ● 1 tsp dried thyme ● 2 bay leaves ● 200gms packet of cooked chestnuts
Directions Heat the butter in a pan and add the bacon. Fry until golden, then remove the bacon with a slotted spoon (and set aside) keeping the fat in the pan. Mix the flour, salt, pepper and nutmeg together and place in a large plastic bag. Add the diced beef to the bag and shake lightly. Now add the floured beef to the pan and brown on all sides. Remove the beef and set aside with the bacon. Fry the onions and garlic for a few minutes until the onions start to soften. Add the carrots and celery and return the beef and bacon to the pan along with the wine and stock. Bring to a simmer and add the tomato puree, thyme and bay leaves. Cover and either simmer on very low or place in the oven at 150C (140C fan) Gas Mark 2 for 2-2½ hours until the beef is tender. After one hour add the chestnuts and add more liquid if required. Check the seasoning before serving. If you are using fresh chestnuts rather than the pre-cooked vacuum-packed ones, visit www.taste.com.au/how+to/articles/1233/roast+chestnuts to find out how to prepare them.

SHE APPEARED TO TRY HER BEST, BUT IT JUST WASN’T TO BE
Oh, dear Dell’Olio ... and last Saturday was the final straw for Nancy Although she tried her best, poor Nancy found herself yet again in the bottom two pairs of dancers. Whatever she did, she just seemed to end up clumping around the stage. She said before the start of the series that all her friends told her she was a very good dancer – maybe she’s great at a disco but rubbish at anything with a structure – or maybe she seriously needs to get some new friends that will tell her the truth rather than suck up.
However, I actually thought that this week’s dance was the best yet and, had she have been given a different partner – Artem or Brendan – who was less interested in being a clown and making sure he got in the limelight rather than his partner, she may well have done much better. So, on Sunday without further ado, out she went and I don’t suppose she’ll be having any private lessons with Mr Du Beck either!
The ever popular Russell Grant looked like a cute roly poly devil in his bright red suit, complete with tail but lost his steps quite a few times and probably should also have been in the bottom two. My husband thinks that the male voters would probably like to see Flavia Cacace in that catsuit of hers again and that’s why they got the votes! Holly Valance’s version of Swan Lake was simply stunning. Poor Chelsee Healy ended up in tears after she had what was described as a “wardrobe malfunction” when she fell out of the dress but it wasn’t visible on TV as far as I could see and she is certainly one of the favourites along with Harry Judd to win. Out so far are Edwina Curry, Dan Lobb, Rory Bremner and now Nancy. Come on Audley, we love your big feet!

Fashion brand Mulberry Duchess named queen of expands into Somerset British fashion Carnival week celebrations are starting early in Bridgwater with news that luxury British fashion brand Mulberry plans to open a £7.5 million handbag factory in the town, creating 250 jobs.
is in addition to our existing factory in Somerset where we already employ 250 production staff.
The group, founded in Somerset 41 years ago, is loved all over the world for its quirky, youthful take on quintessential English style. Actresses Kirsten Dunst, Rosamund Pike and Gemma Arterton are among Mulberry’s devotees. Kirsten Dunst commented: “Accessorieswise you don’t get better than Mulberry.” The group employs 250 production staff at its existing handbag factory at Chilcompton, near Shepton Mallet. It has been awarded a £2.5 million Regional Growth Fund by the coalition government to help set up the second factory.
“In addition to the £2.5million RGF grant, Mulberry is planning to invest £5 million of its own capital in the factory in Bridgwater. Without government support the project would not have been viable. It is anticipated that a second factory will create 256 new jobs and produce approximately 140,000 handbags per annum mainly for export.
A company spokesman said yesterday: “Mulberry Group plc, the luxury British fashion brand, is pleased to confirm that it has been awarded a grant from the government’s Regional Growth Fund to assist in the group’s plans to build a second factory in the UK in order to fulfil growing international demand. This new factory
“Construction of the new factory is expected to commence in 2012 and would be operational by the end of 2013.” It is understood that Bridgwater College will be involved in helping people learn the skills they will need to produce the highlysought after products. Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger said: “this is absolutely fantastic news, jobs with one of the best employers in the West, and the fact that Bridgwater College is
involved too makes it a triple whammy.” Ministers said nine South West bids for Regional Growth Fund cash had been successful in the second round of allocations. They were getting £88 million, which should create or safeguard 5,300 direct and 17,600 indirect jobs. As well as Mulberry, the winners include DTR VMS of Chippenham, Airbus in Bristol, Universal Engineering, who will build a new factory in Weymouth, the City of Bristol College and North Somerset Council. There were four successful South West bids in the first round of RGF money, including EADS in Bristol and Messier Dowty in Gloucester.
She has only recently joined the royal family but already the Duchess of Cambridge is the queen of British fashion, according to UK style magazine Harper's Bazaar. The 29-year-old who married Prince William in April in front of a global audience estimated at some two billion people, has topped the 2011 British best dressed list, published in the latest edition of the glossy yesterday. "Catherine's incredible style evolution has gripped us all," Bazaar UK editor Lucy Yeomans said on the publication's website. "She gave us the year's – if not the century's – most thrilling fashion moment at the royal wedding, and is shaping up as an amazing ambassador for British designers and the high
street." A panel of judges including Yeomans, designer Antonio Berardi, milliner Philip Treacy and designer Roksanda Ilincic decided unanimously that Catherine should be crowned the 2011 winner. The slim brunette took out the 2011 title ahead of singer Florence Welch, actress Andrea Riseborough and model Kate Moss, with designer Stella McCartney and actress Keira Knightley also named in the top 10. Despite being labelled a fashion follower – rather than a leader – by design industry experts in New York earlier this year, the royal is an advocate of British fashion and receives high praise in the UK for her style.

Doctors more open to alternative remedies
Teeth that really are whiter than they’ve ever been
A recent study by researchers at Harvard Medical School has shown that alternative remedies are gaining ground among doctors in the US. Another study found that doctors and nurses are increasingly likely to try alternative or complementary medicines themselves. One of these is the use of the spice turmeric for joint pains, which an increasing number of doctors are recommending. A 2009 study compared the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, with ibuprofen for pain relief in 107 people with knee osteoarthritis. It
found that the curcumin eased pain and improved function about as well as the ibuprofen. The easiest way to take it is in pill or capsule form, in which it is usually combined with a compound called piperine that aids absorption. However, because the active compound in turmeric can sometimes slow blood clotting, it should not be taken for at least two weeks before surgery, nor should it be

I have been conscious of my teeth for as long as I can remember. They are strong, good teeth but are not straight and were certainly not white until very recently indeed. Various dentists had tried to persuade me to have the lot crowned but I’m afraid I’m one of those people who aren’t particularly vain and I couldn’t see the point of taking out perfectly healthy teeth if they weren’t decayed or unless it was absolutely necessary from a medical point of view. However, I had
noticed that my dead front tooth came out grey in photographs and the rest were a bit yellowy – not a good sight to look at at all! So ... I decided to do something about it and, as I was speaking to Lynda from Perfect White Teeth anyway, I quizzed her at some length as to the method she used and what the outcome could be if I went ahead with the treatment. She explained that first of all she takes a medical history to make absolutely sure there’s no reason you shouldn’t go

ahead with the treatment, then she put a shield in my mouth that kept my soft tissue (lips, gums, tongue etc.,) away from the chemicals. She then applied a barrier solution to the bits of gum next to my teeth and applied the solution to my teeth. After that, she shone the laser directly on to my teeth and chatted away to me for the hour or so that the treatment took. At no time was I left on my own and I was not allowed to drink or eat anything that might stain my newly whitened teeth for 48 hours afterwards. I now have lovely white teeth that I’m smiling broadly at everyone to show them off! I would thoroughly recommend Lynda’s treatment. See her ad below for contact details – you won’t be disappointed!

Duncan Boyle I used to look down on those who said that “the law is an ass”, however I have had to review my stance this week. Firstly I was astounded to find out that the Guardia appear to have deemed that the use of GPS satellite systems and the Bluetooth earpiece are dangerous and what’s more they are actively fining drivers this week without warning. Were these systems not invented to keep
Tony Byford A highly-skilled honey trap operation carried out with military precision has finally led to the capture of the black and white dog that has for several weeks been causing concern to visitors to Coin's shopping complex La Trocha. The dog has a rope embedded in his neck which had caused a distressing wound but despite all attempts by passers-by and local animal charity volunteers he has been very resistant to being cajoled by tempting treats into allowing himself to be caught. On one occasion ten people got together, including representatives of SOS and AID, but he took evasive action. Jan from AID has been putting antibiotics in his food to help with the wound and AID, SOS and CHAIN have been actively working at a solution. So we are delighted to report that a successful operation to capture the dog was put in place at the Sunday market. He was spotted on the road behind the SOS stall, and SOS volunteer Ronna and CHAIN committee member Denise quickly hatched a plan with David, the stall holder opposite SOS. David's lovely blonde, blueeyed dog (familiar to market shoppers) was in season. He agreed to put her in the back of the van and leave the tailgate open, to see if nature would take its course. Happily our canny stray responded to his hormones and hopped in. The door was promptly slammed shut and Denise made an emergency call to bring the van from Cat
By email the eyes of the driver on the road instead of looking at a map or their mobile phone? What’s next, will we be fined for looking in our wing mirrors? Secondly, some friends who own a bar in Coin were notified of the next payment due for their local tax on Tuesday this week. From memory it is normally around €343 per quarter but they were informed that due
to “the situation” in Coin they have been requested to pay €546 this time and when the next payment is due it will be the same. Payment is due today (Thursday) and they were informed that if it was not paid on time a fine would be incurred. I think that the Spanish authorities could teach the UK government a thing or two about “Stealth Taxes”.
Hold onto your hats as a giant asteroid skims past the Earth next Tuesday. Asteroid 2005 YU55 will pass within a hair’s breadth of us, and even closer to the Moon!
lthough most are happy to stay within the relatively narrow asteroid belt quite a few of them have been nudged out of their orbit and are now in long elliptical orbits that can take them in close to the Sun and then back out into space. During their journey they can come very close to the earth and are known as NEOs (Near Earth Objects). There are currently several thousand NEOs being constantly tracked with new ones being discovered almost daily.

steroids are millions of pieces of rock that usually orbit between Mars and Jupiter in an area known as the asteroid belt. They vary in size from small pebbles up to the largest called Ceres that is 600 miles in diameter. The asteroids are probably the remains of a planet that was broken up by Jupiter’s massive gravity millions of years ago.
and Dog World, so the dog could be taken for emergency treatment at vet Ana Morales in Coin. Luckily this was arranged before the risk of the patter of tiny paws.
Rod will get vet treatment, be vaccinated, neutered (sorry Rod!) etc and we shall all work to find a home for him. Should anyone want to make a small contribution to his treatment then do visit us at the SOS stall on Sunday (to the left of the Dunnes car park entrance, against the back wall) and we will be able to bring you up to date with his progress.

NEWS
THE
call 622 050 409
s of April 2011, 7,954 NEOs have been discovered: 87 near-Earth comets and 7,867 near-Earth asteroids up to 30 miles in diameter. With 1215 of these NEOs being labeled as ‘potentially hazardous’ and almost 150 being over one mile in diameter then the risk of an impact is a very real threat indeed. Objects with diameters between 5-10 metres hit the Earth about once a year with as much energy as the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima, but thankfully usually explode in the upper atmosphere and the debris is vaporised.
T
he last major impact of an object was in 1908 when an asteroid or comet about 5 miles in diameter exploded 20 miles above a (thankfully) barren area of Russia near Tunguska and flattened 80 million trees covering 830 square miles. It is estimated that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 7.0 on the Richter scale. Scientists are almost universally agreed that it was an asteroid which struck the Earth 60 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs; we are long overdue for another impact.
A
steroid 2005 YU55 is 400 metres or quarter of a mile in diameter and was discovered by the University of Arizona’s Observatory on December 28th 2005 en route and headed our way. On Tuesday 8th November it will pass within 200,000 miles of the Earth. In comparison the Moon is 238,000 miles from Earth so this asteroid will pass between the Earth and the Moon which – in space terms – is REALLY close. This cosmic wanderer is just another
reminder about life here on our sitting duck of a planet.
B
ut it is even closer for the Moon. If you imagine the Moon’s orbit as being the circle of numbers around a clock with the Earth in the centre, then the asteroid will enter from the 6 o’clock position and exit at the 2 o’clock. As it exits the circle the Moon will be in position 1 o’clock or about 40,000 miles from it. If it had arrived just a couple of days earlier then there is a real possibility that it would have hit the Moon or us!
U
nfortunately the asteroid will be too faint to be seen with the naked eye but it does present a fine image on radar and this is the first time that an asteroid of this size has been tracked by radar with such precision. The signals that are received from it can be processed and reproduced to form an image of great quality showing actual surface features down to as little as three metres across.
T
his fly-by of the asteroid will cause no danger at all to the Earth; its gravity is far too weak to influence the tides or weather. But the worrying thing is that the asteroid came from the direction of the Sun. If its orbit hadn’t already been plotted back in 2005 when it was first discovered then we would probably not have spotted it if it had been on a collision course with the Earth. Too late for even plucky Bruce Willis and his chums to do anything about it and prevent a very Deep Impact!

A 'flying Humvee' by next year According to insiders at the military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the first model of this futuristic vehicle will be ready at the end of next year. It is designed to be capable of driving across the roughest terrain like a jeep, sustain gun fire and take off and land at the flick of a switch. The U.S. Army hopes that the 'flying Humvee' will carry four personnel plus equipment, take off and land vertically, be flown more than 250 miles on a tank of gas, and be operated without pilot training.

Button passed Ferrari's Fernando Alonso – who finished third – and Mark Webber's Red Bull on the first lap. Once again feuding foes Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa had a coming together, stewards ruled that the Ferrari driver was in the wrong this time, imposing a
drive-through penalty for causing their collision, but Massa rejected that and his team produced pictures to support his argument.
wing after the incident, told another set of reporters that Massa "just turned in on me, he didn't give me any space." It was clearly not Hamilton's fault, he was virtually completely alongside Massa as they neared the brief braking zone and he was still halfway alongside when they collided despite – as he said afterwards – trying to pull out of the move when he realised Massa was not going to give way.
"I braked later than him, I was in front...to be honest I don't understand why I have the penalty. It is really not understandable," Brazilian Massa told reporters. McLaren's Hamilton, who is having a nightmare Formula One season and had to pit for a new front
Massa could be seen looking in his mirrors a number of times, and made it clear after the race that he knew the McLaren was there. But he felt he was in the right because – as he put it – he "could not see" Hamilton as he turned in. As the stewards decided, though, Hamilton was far enough alongside to have a go – and Massa should have given him more room. Both
2011 Spanish Supermoto championship Britains expat racer, Anthony Ford-Dunn had his hopes of elevating his final position in the 2011 Spanish Supermoto Championship thwarted
by a heavy crash in the first of his two races at the Albaida circuit, Valencia. Anthony prepared himself for his qualifying practice session and set off at a fast pace around the spectacular Albaida circuit. On the 6th lap of qualifying Anthony’s engine broke and he had to retire from the session. The www.supermotoland.com team had to work fast in order to change the engine within 1 hour and 30 minutes before the first SM1 race. The new engine was installed in the nick of time and Anthony lined up in 5th position on the grid
for his first race. He was soon in the thick of the action and fought his way up to 3rd place, but was struggling with the position of his gear shift pedal on his new engine which made changing gear difficult. Midway through the race Anthony missed a gear as he approached the big tabletop jump and was launched over the handlebars as he landed. The resulting impact was enough to rule Anthony out of the rest of the day’s races, although he was fortunate not to sustain any broken bones. Without the opportunity to complete any of the day’s races Anthony had to be content with finishing 4th overall in this year’s SM1 Spanish championship. “4th position is a little disappointing as I was 2nd in 2010, but I have had some bad luck this year that has prevented me from performing as well as I would have liked.” said Anthony as he hobbled back from the circuit medical centre.
Anthony’s older Brother Mat Ford-Dunn also finished 4th in his championship. Mat was racing in the SM road category that misses out
the dirt section and races only on the tarmac race circuit. After qualifying on the front row in 3rd position Mat was confident of a good result but a poor tyre selection meant that his rear tyre overheated and started to lose grip as the race went on. He slowly slipped back to finish in 6th position and was lucky to finish at all after his rear tyre started to fall apart. Both brothers will next be racing in the Catalan championships on the 6th of November at the Alcarras circuit in Lleida.

Back to back wins for Sergio Sergio Garcia climbed back into the world's top 20 with victory in the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama. Garcia, 31, started the day two shots clear of compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez and survived a shaky start to take his second title in a week. The Spaniard ended a three-year title drought last weekend with an emphatic 11-shot victory at the Castello Masters and closed out victory with a 71. Jimenez led at the turn but finished a shot back after carding a 70. Garcia hit two bogeys in the first seven holes as he was overtaken by Jimenez, but recovered to lead by three with three to play. Jimenez birdied the 16th and 17th and Garcia was left with a tricky chip on to
the final green before rolling in from four feet to finish the tournament on six under. Garcia said: "It's been two amazing weeks. "Miguel fought so hard and had some good chances coming in – 17 for eagle and 18 for birdie. I wasn't as good as probably
the last 13 days, but we hung on and managed to pull through. "On 18, we decided to play a little more conservative and make sure we hit the fairway, then the chip was just amazing. I thought it was going in. "I've been in that situation three or four times on this course. It
wasn't easy, but I believed in my ability. To be able to hit the chip I hit there and roll the putt in with the pressure, it was nice." Sergio has decided to rest rather than go looking for a third successive victory at this week's world championship in Shanghai. The 31-yearold's victory in the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama qualified him for the WGC-HSBC Champions event he won in 2008, but his place goes instead to American Jim Furyk. World number one Luke Donald has already withdrawn from the tournament in China with the birth of his second child imminent.
Rory McIlroy’s $2m pay cheque US Open champion Rory McIlroy beat American Anthony Kim in a play-off to win the Shanghai Masters.
Axarquia Rugby bounce back On Sunday 30th October, at the Fernando Hierro stadium in Velez-Malaga, Axaquia rugby got their season back on track after their narrow opening loss to Granada CDU last week. Up against the strong El Ejido club from Almeria, Axarquia played a strong physical game with some crisp handling skills to overcome their opponents with an impressive 29-5 victory. Axarquia face the might of Almeria next weekend (5th/6th November) at home in Velez-Malaga. The U-17 s Cadetes opened their league season with a loss against Marbella B away from home. Overawed by the reputation of their opponents in the first half, the Axarquia boys really didn’t perform and went into the break 39-0 down. However, after a stern halftime team talk from coach Michael Reeve, they performed really well in the 2nd half and scored an impressive try, held their own for 25 minutes but were eventually beaten 59-5 with some late tries from Marbella. Despite the loss, a lot of positives could be taken from the game. The
Cadetes now face Bahia 89 from Cadiz at home at the Fernando Hierro stadium in Velez-Malaga on the 5th November. Axarquia Rugby are creating a strong club and really welcome all newcomers to either come and play or just to support. For more information on joining Axarquia Rugby Club, please ring Michael on 669 899 064 or 952 514 898. Training for Axarquia Rugby Club is held at the Fernando Hierro Stadium in VelezMalaga every Tuesday and Thursday from 19.00 for the Juniors and 20.30 for the seniors (all age groups welcome). By Nick Palacio Blanco
Axarquia rise high to win a lineout
McIlroy gave up an early three-shot lead before rallying on the back nine to finish level with Kim at 18under and force the play-off. The 22-year-old had a chance to win with an eightfoot birdie putt on the 18th, but missed by inches. Both players drove into the bunker on the first hole, but Kim missed his putt, while McIlroy sank his to win. McIlroy pocketed £1.24 ($2m) first-place prize
money, the richest in golf, while Kim took home £465,000 ($750,000). Thirty players took part in the invitational, first-year tournament, which is not sanctioned by a major tour. American Hunter Mahan and South Korea's Noh Seung-yul finished equal third at 13-under. England's world number two Lee Westwood hit a hole in one on the 12th hole and seven birdies for a 67, finishing in fifth place at 12under. It was the best round of the week for Westwood, despite the fact he ended with two bogeys.
Ex-All Blacks coach wants job in Europe World Cup-winning coach Graham Henry has admitted he is interested in coaching in Europe after stepping down as New Zealand boss on Monday. Henry, 65, saw his side narrowly beat France 8-7 in the World Cup final last month to claim their second title. "I would like to spend a little bit of time assisting, if there is a demand from a club or from a union in Europe," Henry told BBC Radio 5 live. "It would be stimulating and challenging and a new focus." He added: "If you are
going to get involved with a club in Europe, you can only do one, and I haven't got a lot of time due to things I have to do in New Zealand." The former Wales coach, who won 88 of his 103 Tests as All Blacks coach during his eight-year reign, is also in talks to stay on as a "coach mentor" with the New Zealand Rugby Union. He admitted the right job and the salary would be crucial factors in deciding his future but last week, he said that he would be interested in working with the Rugby Football Union.
Local cricket news Costa del Sol A v Combined Colleges Or . . . the game that nearly wasn’t! By Saturday the pitch had dried out nicely after last weekend’s rains. Dry yet soft underfoot. Perfect. By the time the groundsman discovered that an overnight breakage to a water pipe had left a good part of the outfield under water, both teams were on their way with just 90 minutes to start time. Thanks to great mopping up efforts by David and his team the game got under way just half an hour late, albeit with a very soggy patch to one side. Of course this patch had a magnetic attraction for the ball which was soon damp and as slippery as the cricketer’s proverbial bar of soap. This must have been the explanation for missed catches being like eggs that day – they came by the dozen! Combined Colleges batted first and were disconcerted to find themselves three wickets down for 22 after 4 overs. It was looking good for Costa del Sol at this point but the new boys were to learn it is not so easy playing with the big boys. Nushan and Previn steadied the ship with a partnership of 79 lasting 13
overs. Nushan (55) and Azard (87 n.o.) were then instrumental in pushing Combined Colleges on to 227 for 6 at the end of their innings, assisted by no fewer than ten missed catching chances, a couple barely chances at all but mostly straightforward. Costa del Sol’s batsmen were chasing nearly 8 runs an over. Brian’s bowling spell of 6 overs 0 wickets for 2 runs put them hopelessly behind the run rate. Only Phil (22) Tom (43) and Tony (22) managed double figures. Nushan’s spell of 6 overs, 4 wickets for 26 runs tore the heart out of the innings which ended on 135 for 7 despite Combined Colleges putting down two catches to bring the total to the round dozen. Man of the match - Nushan. Next week: Costa del Sol B v Mijas Costa Report by Ray Fry

Midweek game:
And as early as the third minute Cabellero, back from suspension, was called on to make a great save from Las. The bad start continued and on seven minutes Botelho headed in from a corner. Malaga looked poor and things went from bad to worse when Eliseu was sent off after 36 minutes.
suspended Eliseu, down the left wing who crossed for Rondon to head in his first goal after just six minutes. On 34 minutes Rondon was one on one with the goalie Christian, who saved the shot and from the rebound Espanyol's Rodriguez cleared off the line. After such a positive start Malaga's defensive frailties were exposed when Alvaro got on the end of a free kick to glance the ball home just before half time. In the 2nd half the game went from end to end with Garcia going closest for Espanyol. But it was Malaga who got the break, Espanyol's Romeric was adjudged to have handled in the box, when in reality the shot hit him in the right eye which he was trying to protect with his hand. Apono duly stepped up to take the resulting penalty and send the goalie the wrong way. Joaquin had another chance at the end of the game and Malaga held on to gain a good three points. between last season’s winners and an invitation team. The idea was to stage an event which would showcase the top bowling talent in Malaga province. The event was a great success, due to the quality of bowling and the very sporting manner in which it was played.
The men with their wine
The format followed last year’s with three matches spread over two days. It was staged on 26th and 27th October, at Miraflores BC, chosen for its central location and the quality of the bowling surface.

ATHLETICS
Ban drugs cheats from Olympics Former Olympic champion Michael Johnson has called for athletes who fail a drugs test to be banned from the next Olympic Games. British drug cheats are banned from all subsequent Games by the British Olympic Association, but other countries pick athletes who have served drugs bans. Johnson told BBC Sport: "I'm not sure if a lifetime ban is actually fair. But it would be more of a deterrent for people if they see that an athlete who cheats misses an Olympic Games."
