MORE RAIN ON THE WAY - National News
Floods hit the north A 76-year-old man was swept to his death by a flash flood which hit Ventas de Irun in Guipuzcoa province over the weekend, and thousands of people in towns across the province were affected by the rising waters. Heavy rain caused the Urumea, Oria and Oiartzun rivers and dozens of streams to overflow their banks. One of the worst affected towns was San Sebastian where dozens of people had to be rescued from their flooded homes, while 5,400 homes were left
without electricity. The Basque regional government is studying the possibility of having the province declared a catastrophic zone. More than 300 litres per square metre of rain fell in the Basque Country in 60 hours. By Monday, the rains, which had been
accompanied by high winds, had lessened and moved further east to Navarre, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. However, weathermen have warned there will be more rainfall in the Basque Country on Thursday, followed by high winds over the weekend.

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Disgrace
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
This Friday is Remembrance day and for the first time since its inception, all the 11s line up so it will be on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and (for the first time), the eleventh year. Many venues have remembrance services every year, some with buglers playing the evocative last Post beautifully. On page 17 you can find a feature on Remembrance day with the Flanders Field poem. I watched Sky news this morning and was absolutely flabbergasted (though quite why that should be in this day and age rather beats me!) to hear that FIFA, the football governing body, has told football players in the uK that they are not allowed to wear Remembrance day poppies. Of course, playing any sport with a paper poppy with a pin in it would be daft, let alone dangerous, but these were transfers on the actual shirts themselves. FIFA have declared them a “political statement” and therefor illegal under FIFA rules. I think the answer to FIFA on that score has to be a) they are not a political statement. They are saying that we are remembering those that gave up there lives for us, b) they are being worn on British soil so, unless it is detrimental to the game of football, it’s none of your business, and c) get a life FIFA and don’t be so stupid! I am pleased to report that the turnout for the seminar on what to do if someone dies last Friday in coin was phenominal and I hope that it helped the people there get more of an understanding of the systems here in Spain. I will run a few editorial pieces over the next few weeks, probably on the community news pages, subject to space, so that those of you who couldn’t come last Friday will have a better idea. Weight = down another pound. Teeth = still gleaming!

High tension at ETA murder trial The trial of four members of the so-called Argala cell of the Basque terrorist group ETA on murder charges for the killing of councillor José Javier Múgica Leitza, Navarre province was suspended last week after Judge Angela Morillo had to excuse herself for calling the defendants “bastards”, not realising her microphone was still on. The trial of Andoni Otegi; former ETA military wing leader Francisco Javier "Txapote" García Gaztelu (pictured), Juan Carlos Besance and Oscar Zelarain, resumed on Friday with testimony from the widow of the man they are accused of murdering – councillor José Javier Múgica – in Leitza, Navarre province in 2001. Adoracion Zubeldia told the three-judge panel in a tearful voice how her husband died: "The truck was burning and so was my husband." She also described the numerous threats Múgica had received, including the targets painted on the walls near their home and a string of robberies. As she was being led away by a
court bailiff, she asked him if she could “look at these boys”. She then stared long and hard at them before Judge Carmen Paloma asked her to return to her seat. Witnesses said the four men were unable to hold her gaze. After Judge Angela Morillo
withdrew from the trial, Speaker José Bono told reporters: “She only said what the majority of Spaniards were thinking”. It was the first ETA trial to be held since the group announced a “definitive
cessation of violence” on October 20th. The government has said that the ceasefire would not halt the trials of ETA defendants in custody nor the arrests of the terrorist group's members who are still being sought by law enforcement.

Unemployment rose last month by 134,182 to 4.36 million – the biggest jump for October since 2008 when Lehman Brothers collapsed. Labour Minister Valeriano Gómez said: "We have seen a fall back and that is something that should be of concern to everyone." He said the latest figures put Spain "farther away from pulling out of the crisis". Gómez said the government agreed with the Bank of Spain's estimate of zero growth in the third quarter, adding that things are "not looking good" for the economy for the fourth quarter. "The situation is not only more difficult or worse than we had a few months ago, it is particularly delicate." The release of the figures came hours after the official opening of the election campaign at midnight last Thursday.

Rajoy ahead in campaign's only TV debate ?
Most of the spanish media gave Partido Popular candidate Mariano Rajoy the edge over socialist Party candidate alfredo Perez Rubalcaba in Monday's televised debate, which offered little new in the way of the candidates' plans and programmes. The former Interior minister and deputy PM was handicapped by the recent bleak news on the economic front. The unemployment rate, at nearly 22%, is more than twice the European Union average and there are signs that the country is heading back to recession. Rubalcaba is also handicapped by being so closely associated with Prime Minister José Luis

Rodriguez Zapatero, who has governed Spain through its worst economic crisis in decades. On the other hand, Rajoy was cushioned by polls which have consistently given him a growing lead in the November 20th general election. If they prove true, the Partido Popular will have its biggest election win since it was founded in 1989, while the Socialist
Party will suffer its worst defeat since the transition to democracy after the Franco dictatorship. Spain's two leading contenders for prime minister in the forthcoming general elections have held their only live television debate. Rubalcaba used the debate to accuse Rajoy of having secret plans for massive cuts and privatisation that he was not declaring to the

Fewer working hours after 55 The Secretary of State for Employment, Mari Luz Rodriguez, told Europa Press on Monday that the government is looking at the possibility of allowing people to volunteer to work fewer hours after age 55, with the corresponding reduction in salary – but without this affecting their pensions.
Trafico fine for Tom Hanks poster The Traffic Authority has fined Tripictures, the distributor of “Larry Crowne”, starring Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts, €30,000 for producing a poster showing them riding a motorcycle without helmets. The normal fine is €150 but an Authority spokesman said the poster, in addition to breaking the law, undermined its efforts to make motor cyclists aware of the dangers of not using a helmet. In addition, he
said, the poster encouraged reckless behaviour and defiance of the law, hence the higher fine. The spokesman also pointed out that wearing helmets had reduced
motorcyclists' deaths by almost 40 per cent. Last year, Barcelona city hall fined Colombian singer Shakira €400 for riding pillion on a motorbike without a helmet while filming her videoclip Loca.
She said a study is to be carried out which will be presented to the regional governments within the framework of Global Strategy for the Employment of Older Workers 2012-2014, also called “55 and over”, which the Cabinet approved at

Ricky Martin gets nationality The Cabinet approved requests for Spanish nationality from Ricky Martin and Benicio del Toro, both born in Puerto Rico, last Friday. Martin had applied for it in order to be able to marry his long-time partner, the economist Carlos Gonzalez, while Del Toro has many relatives living in Barcelona. Martin could marry in some US states but chose Spain because of the government’s defence of gay rights. reat to Iran 'a mistake' Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov (pictured) warned Israel on Tuesday that military action against Iran would be a "very serious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences". He said diplomacy, not missile strikes, was the only way to solve the Iranian nuclear problem. He was responding to comments by Israeli President Shimon Peres that an attack on Iran was becoming more likely. The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is expected to say this week that Iran is secretly developing a nuclear arms capability.
Diplomats have said its report will produce compelling evidence that Iran will find hard to dispute. This will include intelligence that Iran made computer models of a nuclear warhead, as well as satellite images of what the IAEA believes is a large steel container used for highexplosives tests related to nuclear arms. Iran has always insisted that its nuclear programme is
exclusively to generate power for civilian purposes. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has said the alleged evidence is a fabrication and part of a multi-pronged US smear campaign against his country. Hardline Iranian cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami warned the IAEA on Monday not to become "an instrument without will in the hands of the United States".
Carlos the Jackal faces new trial Self-styled international revolutionary Carlos the Jackal went on trial in Paris on Monday over four bomb attacks in the early 1980s that killed 11 people and wounded another 100. The 62-year-old Venezuelan whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez is already serving a life sentence in France for the murder of two
policemen in 1975. He was captured by French special forces in Sudan in 1994, by which time he had earned global notoriety as a mastermind of fatal bomb attacks, assassinations and hostage-takings. His most infamous act was leading a raid in Vienna in 1975, when his group took 11 ministers of the Organisation of
Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) hostage. Ramirez denies he had anything to do with the bombings. If found guilty, he could face another life sentence in prison. He is defended by Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, his lawyer from his original trial, whom he married in a Muslim ceremony in jail 10 years ago.

How many have Red Arrows suffer another accident been let in? News of a border blunder has been emerging following the UK’s Border Force deciding that they would relax the rules on biometric tests on those entering the country. Head of the department Brodie Clark and two other officers have been suspended until further enquiries into the affair have been made. Home Secretary Theresa May admitted in a statement that in light of their actions there is no way of knowing how many illegal immigrants and suspected terrorists have entered the country because checks had not been made against the Home Office database that would have highlighted them as they went through passport control – thereby preventing them from entering the UK. Ms May said that the agency had been told to “relax” checks made on
European citizens in a bid to make queues shorter but there had been no directive to include those migrants from other countries and that the Border Force had decided to do so themselves. One traveller described the actions as “disgraceful” and “putting us all in danger”. He added that, as a frequent traveller, the queues at passport control are often “horrendous” due to only one or two officers being on duty, when there may be 20 stations that they could work out of. He said the answer was not to relax the rules but take on more Border Force personnel to open more channels at airports and other ports of entry – thereby lessening the queues that way. He ended by saying: “But they don’t want to spend the money, do they?”
At time of going to press on Tuesday, news was emerging about an injury to a crew member from the Red Arrows flying team based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.
year-old pilot was killed in an air show crash near Bournemouth in Dorset and hundreds of air service personnel joined Flt. Lt. Egging’s family at Lincoln Cathedral for a memorial service last week.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that there had been an incident but that the team’s Hawk T1 aircraft was on the ground at the time. Investigations will be continuing to determine what had happened and they would provide more details as they emerged. There have been unconfirmed reports that a malfunction with the aircraft’s ejector seat had caused the accident. The condition of the injured airman is not known as The News goes to press.
Following that incident the RAF halted flying all of their training jets, numbering 126, while investigations were carried out to determine the cause of the accident. The Red Arrows’ season ended in September and personnel are busy carrying out their winter training at RAF Scampton. Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance service confirmed it was called to the base and airlifted a patient to Lincoln County Hospital.
The accident follows the death of Red Arrows pilot Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging last August. The 33-

‘Singing in the train’ When Lucy Rogers caught the 19:57 from Euston, she did not expect a serenade from a 25strong choir and a marriage proposal from boyfriend Adam King. But soon after the Watfordbound train pulled out of the station, a fellow traveller in Lucy's carriage began singing the Bill Wither's classic Lovely Day. Within seconds the solo had turned into a full-choir a capella version of the hit song, with two-thirds of the other passengers joining in. UK
Vigil for motorway victims A special vigil will be held on Friday night at the Sainsbury’s car park in Taunton by the side of the M5 that overlooks the site of the crash – one week on from the huge pile-up which killed seven people and injured 51. A minute's silence will be held at exactly 8.25pm – the time the crash occurred.
than 50 injured A huge pile-up on the M5 near Taunton in the West Country left seven people dead and more than 50 injured on Friday night. It was first thought that fog had caused the accident but after several witnesses who managed to escape the carnage came forward, it would seem that smoke drifting across the carriageway meant that drivers found themselves suddenly hitting a “black wall” that they could not see through. The smoke appears to have come from a fireworks display that Taunton Rugby Club was holding in grounds abutting the motorway. Avon and Somerset Assistant Chief Constable, Anthony Bangham said that their main line of enquiry will now be towards the club, what permissions they had asked for and obtained for the display and what health and safety measures they had adhered to. The ACC added that the area was already suffering from fog and that conditions were “difficult”. Witnesses at the display have already

been interviewed by police. Emma Barton and her boyfriend Christopher Burbull managed to escape but Emma has since slipped into a coma. Her wheelchair-bound father and her sister Maggie both perished in the carnage as they could not escape from their vehicle that was enveloped by a fireball. The girls’ mother had died several years before and a neighbour said that they had become extremely close. A retired couple Tony Adama, 73, and his wife Pamela from Newport, South Wales who were on their way home after visiting their daughter also died. Kye Thomas, 38, from Gunnislake, Cornwall, leaves two sons and two daughters. He was one of two lorry drivers who died, the other was Terry Brice from Bristol. The seventh casualty of the accident was Malcolm Beacham, of Woolavington in Somerset. People caught up in the crash have praised the bravery of those who helped.

Black year for murders October topped a year already marked by violent deaths with another five murders which, together with one so far this month, bring the numbers of murders in Malaga province so far this year to 21 – five more than the total for the
whole of 2010. Six people have been murdered in Malaga capital and another ten along the coast – three in Marbella, two each in Mijas, Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and one in Estepona. There was one murder each in the inland
towns of Arriate, Alhaurin el Grande, Tolox, Igualeja and Cutar. In addition, police are investigating several suspicious deaths, including that of the man found floating off La Cala de Mijas last week. Three

that only 8 per cent of drivers over 65 were involved in accidents between 2000 and 2008. According to the Provincial Traffic Authority, 9.9 per cent, or 70,850, of the total drivers in Malaga province are 65 or over, 21,457 are over 74 and their accident rate is lower than
the national average. Psychologist Mercedes Garcia said older drivers are not a problem because while they may not have the reflexes of a 30-year-old, they make up for this by concentrating more, being more prudent and respecting traffic norms and
the bins to the surface are being sold for scrap. The mechanisms cost €3,000 each, the large turrets €900, the small ones €700 – plus installation costs. The spokesman said the thefts were marring the town's urban landscape as well as costing the council a lot of money.

Roca admits taking money On the 104th day of the Malaya corruption case being heard in Malaga, Marbella's former urban planning adviser, Juan Antonio Roca, finally admitted on Monday that he had received sums of money amounting to €33.3 million from local businessmen. He also admitted paying some €3.3 million out of his own pocket to Marbella councillors after a vote of confidence which led to the ousting of then mayor Julian Muñoz in 2003. However, Roca carefully avoided linking the payments to the concession of building licences or illegal administrative actions. He said he had
Conflicting evidence in Alhaurin Businessman José Burgos Leiva electrified the Malaga court hearing the charges of corruption against Alhaurin el Grande mayor Juan Martin Seron and town planning councillor Gregorio Guerra on Friday when he told the latter's lawyer that Guerra had asked him for €120,000 for a licence to build 14 houses on land that was only big enough for five, according to the council´s classification. Burgos Leiva, who was wired by the police with a judge's order to tape three conversations with Guerra, went even further: “Anyone who has laid a brick in Alhaurin has had to pay a 'revolutionary' tax.” Burgos Leiva also claimed that Mayor Martin Seron was fully aware of what was going on. However, two other businessmen told the court the same day that they had only paid the official rate for building licences and at no time had been asked for money to obtain them. The case continues.
received fees of €3.5 million from each of three businessmen for advising them on the purchase of plots in Marbella and their subsequent development. As regards the other 16 businessman involved, Roca claimed his dealings with them were part of his “private business” which had nothing to do with the Town Council. He said the

payments to the councillors were “bonuses” to keep them faithful to former Mayor Jesus Gil's plans for Marbella. Both Roca's defence team and the prosecution affirmed that Roca's unexpected declarations “did not form part of any agreement between the two parties” but resulted from months of “reflection” on Roca's part.

Yawning confrontation
A
T
doracion Zubeldia will probably go down in Basque and Spanish folklore as “the widow” – for having courageously stared down her husband’s four ETA murderers in court last Friday. In trials of ETA assassins, witnesses usually opt to give testimony facing the judge and with a screen between them and the accused, who normally sit just a few feet behind them. Sometimes the more unruly ones are kept in glassed-in cages at the back of the courtroom. The widow of Navarra councillor Jose Javier Mugica opted for the screen last Wednesday when she made her first appearance in court but on Friday, she decided not to use it. After telling Judge Carmen Paloma Gonzalez in a broken tearladen voice “the truck was burning and so was my husband”, she stood to be led away by one of the courtroom ushers, but hesitated and apparently asked him to let her look at her husband's murderers. She then turned round and stared long and hard at the men, especially “Txapote”, a frequent visitor to the courts. The judge quickly intervened and instructed the widow to return to her seat. I think she feared the widow would go up to the men and slap them hard in the face. If she had, the whole of Spain would have stood up and cheered. Witnesses said afterwards the men were unable to hold her stare.
T
he trial had been suspended on Wednesday after the widow’s first appearance on the stand, when the then presiding judge Angela Trujillo turned to one of the other judges, saying “poor woman, and on top of everything else the bastards are laughing”. Judge Trujillo stood down, and when the trial resumed on Friday, one of the accused, Andoni Otegi told the court: “No-one was laughing at the widow. In fact we respect her suffering.” If they’d respected her a bit more back in 2001, they might not have put the bomb under her husband’s truck. As for respecting her suffering, what an obscene thing to say, seeing as how they were the cause of her suffering.
A
s for Txapote, aka Francisco Javier García Gaztelu, for once he stopped sneering and posturing, acting the brave big ETA military leader. One of his more notorious murders was that of PP councillor Miguel Ángel Blanco in Ermua in July 1997. Txapote and his girlfriend, Irantzu Gallastegui, alias Amaia, kidnapped Blanco and held him for 48 hours, demanding that the Aznar government relocate ETA prisoners in jails in the Basque Country. When the government didn’t give in,
Txapote made Blanco kneel down and shot him in the back of the head. That murder shocked the country and, for the first time, thousands of people took to the streets condemning ETA and demanding an end to the group. Until then, most people were scared to express their feelings about ETA in public in case they too became a target.
A
fter the widow sat down, the camera managed to zoom in briefly on Txapote’s face. He looked very pensive, for once, and I thought – could he actually be beginning to realise that most people think he’s a piece of you-knowwhat? He might also be realising that even if ETA does disband, he probably won't get out of jail any time soon. That brief glimpse of a cowed terrorist went a long way to making up for all the disgusting courtroom antics we’ve had to put up with from him – and Amaia – in the past.
The downside
T
xapote and Amaia, who has a reputation for being one of the crueller etarras (ETA members), could be described as the Bonnie and Clyde of terrorism – “pretty looking people but let me tell you people they’re the devil’s children”, as the song says. She accompanied him for many of the 55 murders he’s either carried out himself or ordered and they’re still together – in jail. They’re married now and have two children. As a married couple, they’re allowed seven 40-minute meetings every month – four with glass between them, once for an “intimate” meeting, and twice with their families.
T
xapote is already serving several sentences averaging 60 to 80 years apiece and on Monday, the court handed him another 105 years in jail. He was also ordered to pay compensation of €500,000 to the widow and the family of her husband's bodyguard, Jorge Diez, who died with him. Unfortunately, his prison sentences are not consecutive and he’ll probably get out after serving only 30 years.
here were no surprises or chilling moments during Monday night’s debate between Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and Mariano Rajoy. In fact, with the exception of an unexpected proposal by Rubalcaba to ask for a two-year moratorium on Spain’s deficit-reduction commitment, the dull face-to-face gave us no new details about how either of the two candidates for prime minister intend to reduce unemployment and stimulate the country’s economy. Rajoy was combative when he was pressed about the ambiguities in the Popular Party (PP) platform. Even though he had some bright moments, Rubalcaba, on the other hand, appeared tired. For most of the two hour-telecast, the Socialist candidate focused on telling viewers what Rajoy intends to do, if he wins the November 20th election, while the PP leader reminded voters about what Rubalcaba and Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez had done wrong over the past eight years in office.
T
his will be the only debate, unfortunately, we will see during this race. Although face-to-face confrontations between prime ministerial candidates are still novel in Spain, two debates have been the norm in the past before voters went to the polls. This time, the PP, confident that it has clinched the race, refused the Socialists’ request for a second round. According to all the polls, the opposition is headed for a sweeping victory. The only chance that Rubalcaba had was to warn voters about Rajoy’s secret plans to make drastic cuts, including in Spain’s treasured health system, education and public sector jobs.
T
he 200-page-plus PP manifesto is filled with vague pledges that lack support, and Rubalcaba was adamant throughout the head-to-head to pin down the PP candidate over these proposals. "You appear not to be concerned about funding the public health system," Rubalcaba said at one point, after explaining that the Socialists intend to hike taxes on alcohol and tobacco to help shore-up the financially burdened health sector. He also accused the regions governed by the PP of allowing private hospitals to “release” patients with chronic illnesses so that they can be absorbed by the publicly financed health system at cost savings to the privately run clinics. Rajoy appeared not to know what Rubalcaba was talking about.
T
he PP candidate did pledge that he would not cut pensions, while bemoaning that the Socialists have
been the only party in the history of Spain to make such cuts, amounting to only €1.4 billion in savings. Rajoy also promised not to give any public money to banks or cut subsidies to the unemployed. Rubalcaba, on his part, called for a delay in meeting a European Union commitment to bring down Spain’s deficit to the 3-per cent ceiling until 2015 in order to free up money for social spending and help the jobless.
T
here was no shortage of insults. Rajoy on more than one occasion called Rubalcaba “a liar” – “knowing you, that doesn’t surprise me” – while the Socialist candidate tried to keep his cool. Rubalcaba seemed better prepared than Rajoy, who read from his “cheat sheet” notes on more than 100 occasions, according to journalists who kept count. At one point, the Socialist contender pulled an ace from his sleeve when he put Rajoy on the spot by demanding to know what he intends to do about the 2005 gay marriage law. He asked his PP opponent to withdraw the appeal his party filed with the Constitutional Court which, after more than five years, is still studying the petition. Rajoy awkwardly avoided answering, and instead read off a list of pledges from his notes. "I knew that it wasn't in your prompt cards," Rubalcaba retorted. Much later, Rajoy reminded viewers that from the start he supported Zapatero’s decision to legalise domestic partnerships, as Britain and Germany has done, but never sided with the concept of homosexual marriage. He said he would allow the Constitutional Court to decide the issue.
A
ccording to the polls, Rajoy won this yawning debate. The Metroscopia poll for El País put Rajoy five points ahead of Rubalcaba while La Sexta television network gave him a 8.7 lead. El Mundo, a traditional PP backer, gave Rajoy a landslide with 51 per cent over 44 per cent for Rubalcaba. But as many politicians say, the real poll is the election itself. Unfortunately, this time around we won’t get a good gauge of where Spaniards stand. Many voters – in both the PP and Socialists camps – intend to stay home, believing that their voice won’t count because Rajoy has the election in the bag. Those favoured to make strong gains are the small parties, such as Rosa Diez’s UPyD party and the United Left (IU) coalition, which has a strong support from famous artists, actors, writers and intellectuals – a once strong base for Zapatero but who have now decided to veer further left following their disenchantment with the current Socialist Party.

Is inheritance tax in Spain about to change ? – An update from Jon Sutton, De Cotta Law
There is a vast difference between the state inheritance tax rules and the regional allowances. Several regions including Madrid, the Canary Islands, the Balearics, Valencia and Murcia have virtually no inheritance tax between spouses or between parents and children. Others, principally those with socialist administrations, have less generous allowances – nevertheless with professional advice the reductions can be utilised so as to significantly lower or eliminate the inheritance tax burden. For example Andalucia allows a gift to a spouse, child or parent of up to €175,000 tax free. This is an all or nothing allowance not a nil rate band so a gift of
€176,000 would be taxable on the full amount. As previously stated, these allowances only apply where the deceased and beneficiaries are residents. If not, the much less generous state rules apply which simply allow a deduction of just under €16,000 from the gift for tax purposes for spouse, children and parents of the deceased. This can mean that non resident beneficiaries pay many thousands of euros more tax than they would if they were residents. However help may be on its way from the European Commission. In Brussels on 27th October 2011, The European Commission has decided to refer Spain to the EU's Court of Justice for discriminatory rules on inheritance and gift tax requiring non-residents to pay higher taxes than residents. The Commission had already formally requested Spain on 5th May 2010 and additionally on 17th February 2011 to take action to ensure compliance with the EU rules in regard to inheritance and gift tax provisions. However, no amendments have been made to Spanish legislation
Audition pieces will be available in the box-office from Saturday 5th November. For any further information regarding the roles of the hotel guests please call Peter Brooks on 952 887 372 or 617 520 923
Bam Bam Bam-Bam was found on the streets and this lovely, old, loyal and super sweet old man needs a loving home urgent! Bam-bam loves everybody and also all dogs, he is SO friendly and gentle and easy that it’s a must that people meet him! Many people will never look at a dog who is not so young anymore…BamBam is 10 years or maybe a bit more! BUT he is such a super boy and does not ask much…only loving people, a warm and soft bed and maybe if possible some good food! He does not need long walks ... short ones already make him very happy. Please help him and let Triple A not be his last
home. Give him a happy ending in a loving home and, maybe not for many years but, it will be a happy ending for HIM! Bam-Bam is in the animal shelter Triple A and you can meet him there or read more about him on the website www.aaahelps.com. You can also email Diana Luchies who loves this old man but at the moment is already homing many dogs. Contact: Diana@aaahelps.com or telephone 607 468 660
on the matter. The Commission considers that this discriminatory tax treatment constitutes an obstacle to the free movement of people and capital, fundamental principles of the EU's Single Market, and is in breach of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (Articles 45 and 63 respectively). Litigation in the European Courts is notoriously slow however, if and when the inheritance laws are changed it would be well worth everyone with a property in Spain to consult their lawyer or accountant to see whether changes should be made to their wills to reduce or eliminate inheritance tax. LESSON
As I mentioned in my previous article on this subject, at present inheritance tax allowances in Spain only apply when both the deceased and the beneficiaries are officially resident in Spain. It is then the tax rules of that particular region which apply. If either the deceased or the beneficiary is non resident then the State inheritance tax rules apply. This includes cases where Spanish residents receive an inheritance from outside of Spain.

Confusing words - Mean The question arose in class recently as to how you say "mean" in Spanish. Of course, it all depends which meaning of mean you mean. The original question I was asked was "What does orgulloso mean? Which in Spanish would be ¿Qué significa orgulloso? To which one might reply Orgulloso significa proud - Orgulloso means proud. Equally one could say ¿Cómo se dice orgulloso en inglés? How do you say orgulloso in English? And the reply would then be Orgulloso se dice proud which translates loosely as orgulloso means proud. If you want to ask someone "What do you mean? it is best to use ¿Qué quieres decir? What do you mean by that? - ¿Qué quieres decir con eso? I didn't mean to do it would be Lo hice sin querer (Literally, I did it without wanting to) He/She didn't mean to do it - Lo hizo sin querer To stress that you mean what you are saying use - Lo digo en serio (I mean it) If someone is mean as in stingy or penny-pinching they are tacaño if male and tacaña if female. If someone is mean as in mean-spirited or plain nasty we use malo/mala. And if you want to say that someone means well - Tiene buenas intenciones. Hasta la próxima - Until next time. We will remember them Written by Kym Wickham This year Remembrance Day will start at 11am of the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year for the first time: 11, 11/11/11 – so buy your poppy and wear it with pride. “We have been in the most bitter of fights. For 17 days and 17 nights none of us have had our clothes off, nor our boots even, except occasionally. In all that time while I was awake, gunfire and rifle fire never ceased for sixty seconds… and behind it all was the constant background of the sights of the dead, the wounded, the maimed and a terrible anxiety lest the line should give way.” This extract was written by John McCrae, April, 1915.
“Who was John McCrae?” John McCrae (pictured right) was a Canadian, born in Ontario in 1871, who qualified in medicine at Toronto in 1898. On the outbreak of the First

World War, he enlisted within the first few weeks and was sent overseas in September 1914, again with the Canadian Field Artillery. On May 2nd, 1915 during the second battle of Ypres and whilst stationed at Essex Farm, Flanders, Belgium, John McCrae’s close friend and former student Alexis Helmer was killed by a German shell. That evening, in the absence of a Chaplain, John McCrae recited from memory a few passages from the Church of England’s “Order of the Burial of the Dead”. For security reasons Helmer’s burial in Essex Farm Cemetery was performed in complete darkness. The next day, May 3rd 1915, Sergeant-Major Cyril Allinson was delivering mail. McCrae was sitting at the back of an ambulance parked near the dressing station beside the Yser Canal, just a few hundred yards north of Ypres, Belgium.
As John McCrae was writing his In Flanders Fields poem, Allinson silently watched and later recalled, “His face was very tired but calm as he wrote. He looked around from time to time, his eyes straying to Helmer's grave." Within moments, John McCrae had completed the poem and when he was done, without a word, McCrae took his mail and handed the poem to Allinson. Allinson was deeply moved: “The (Flanders Fields) poem was an exact description of the scene in front of us both. He used the word blow in that line because the poppies actually were being blown that morning by a gentle east wind. It never occurred to me at that time that it would ever be published. It seemed to me just an exact description of the scene."

Helmer's grave cannot be found in the Cemetery; it was lost later in the War, and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate. Seeing the poppies blow around the graves led to the best known image of this poem. "In Flanders Fields" was published for the first time in Punch in December that year, and has since come to encapsulate the sacrifice of those who fought. John McCrae was a lieutenant Colonel in the First World War. No doubt, once you’ve read them below, you will recognise the words.
In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks still bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead: Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved: and now we lie In Flanders fields! Take up our quarrel with the foe To you, from failing hands, we throw The torch: be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
Why do poppies grow in Flanders Fields? Every spring during the four long years of WWI, soldiers witnessed the brilliant red poppies blooming on the newly dug graves and on the shelled battlegrounds surrounding the fields of
Flanders in Belgium. Poppy seeds will lie dormant for years until the soil around them is disturbed. The battles in Flanders created the ideal conditions for poppy seeds to germinate, take root and bloom everywhere in great numbers. Each year on Remembrance Day and at many memorial services around the globe, poppies are traditionally worn and the In Flanders Fields poem is recited in honour of our fallen comrades. Remembrance Day poppies owe their origin to John McCrae’s poem. The money generated from the sale of the poppies goes toward the rehabilitation of British service personnel who have been injured in current conflicts, and to support the families of those who have lost loved ones during the various conflicts. So dig deep in your pockets, handbags, down the sides of the sofa cushions and give whatever you can – don’t feel embarrassed if you think your little bit isn’t enough, it is! Every little bit given adds up to a bigger bit that can make a real difference to people’s lives. After all, it is they who are keeping us safe and we should never forget that. Most will also know the poem “For the Fallen” and the two poems sometimes get mixed up in people’s minds. Laurence Binyon (1869-1943, pictured below right), the poet and art critic, was born in Lancaster in 1869. He worked at the British Museum before going to war, having studied at Trinity College, Oxford where he won the Newdigate poetry prize. Whilst on the staff of the British Museum he developed an expertise in Chinese and Japanese art. Aside from his best known poem For The Fallen (1914)– most notably the fourth stanza which adorns numerous war memorials – Binyon published work on Botticelli and Blake among others. He returned to the British Museum following the war. His Collected Poems was published in 1931.
For The Fallen With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead
across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres, There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain; As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Arthur Christmas
A
By Sarah Smith, Voices of James McAvoy, Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent Put this down as a mustsee for the family – it may be a bit early to start thinking about Christmas but this is a definite festive cracker to watch out for. Reigning Santa (Jim Broadbent) is about to step down and hand over the job to his joyless son Steven (Hugh Laurie). Now, it seems that Santa's worldwide gift delivery operation is a bit more sophisticated than we have been led to believe. Apparently there is an ultra high-tech
operation hidden beneath the North Pole ... but we all know that technology can let us down. So when one little girl is missed out and Steven doesn't seem to care too much, it's up to Santa's bumbling, kindhearted younger son Arthur (James McAvoy) to step in to save the day and preserve the youngster's Christmas dreams. And there's only one sure-fire way to do it – by dusting off the old sleigh, harnessing the reindeer and delivering the gifts in
the traditional way. The studio behind Wallace and Gromit – Aardman Animations – have produced a charming 3D delight for all the family. It's full of good 'ole fashioned values and we all root for good-natured Arthur as he does his best to save all that is wonderful about Christmas. With funny dialogue and fantastic animation this could well make it on to the list of classic seasonal movies that are
dusted down each year for a re-showing.

fter seeing “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” I already thought that Woody Allen had lost it. However, I didn’t let that put me off wanting to see his new project “Midnight in Paris”. The nicest thing I can say about “Midnight in Paris” is, it’s cute. Owen Wilson did his best, but Woody Allen isn’t improving and is lacking in originality. aybe lacking in originality is a little harsh, but not even half an hour into the movie and I’m already thinking of “Purple Rose of Cairo”. Although that is one of my favourite Allen movies, it’s not a good idea to use the same kind of concept twice. I held out such hope for “Midnight in Paris”, but it didn’t do it – it was like some unknown director trying to make a Woody Allen movie and didn’t quite pull it off. The humour was lacking, the dialogue average and the story was OK, but the constant name dropping and characters were just downright pretentious.
T
he story is about Owen Wilson, who is engaged to Rachael McAdams. He’s not happy with his life in Hollywood and wants to become a writer and live in Paris (preferably in the 20s). McAdams, however, doesn’t feel the same way, so, when she bumps in to some friends, she decides to see Paris with them and Wilson takes this opportunity to wander the streets alone. Wilson walks around and gets a bit lost, sits on some church steps, and at the stroke of midnight an old 1920s car rolls up and the next thing you know Wilson is partying in the 20s. Over the following nights, he meets, Dali, Picasso,
Hemmingway, Stein, Fitzgerald, Buñuel, etc,
B
asically everyone involved in the arts in Paris during that decade, appears in the film, with the exception of Joyce. On one of his nights in the 20s he meets this girl, who wants to live in the Belle Epoch era, and not to give too much away, Lautrec, Gaugin and Degas make an appearance. Wilson gets back to his own time and makes his decision and then the movie, just kind of ends.
T
his movie is quirky at best and considering all the lame movies that are in the cinema, this one doesn’t seem that bad. But another thing that bothered me a little bit about this movie, was that McAdams wardrobe is shocking, everything she wore made her look fat and Martin Sheens’ character, was just awful, he was one of those “experts” on everything, ugh!
W
hat a disappointment, it was like American wedding cake, nice to look at, sweet, but with no substance to it. Unfortunately Allen, just isn’t funny anymore, it’s time for him to retire, before he makes a fool of himself.

It can be challenging to figure out where to direct your attention as too many things could be tugging you in different directions. Therefore, it may be beneficial to bear in mind that there is something you are not seeing clearly that is trying to make itself known. Even though it is in your nature to direct force with precision, this week is urging you to go with the flow until a clearer picture presents itself. Communication is the key this week, do not assume the facts that others are telling you to be accurate, always question and find things out for yourself. Make sure you know what is at stake before making any changes. You do know what needs to be done even if others are standing around waiting. Use your talents, take control; old structures are dissolving - get ready for the materialisation of the new. Sometimes we need to let others know that we mean business. This is one of those times - perhaps you have been questioning certain decisions that you have made and are wondering if the risk was too great. On the other hand sometimes you just have to take things to the limit in order for the right thing to play out. Take the action, make those courageous moves and you will get the feedback you need. This is an emotional time for you when your sensitivity is increased and your instincts heightened. Making excuses and finding reasons for not doing things is easy at the moment, this is because there are a lot of planets moving in retrograde making you feel static inside. However, the opportunities around you are tumultuous right now, even if you make a mistake somehow it will benefit you – put your ideas into action.
Prepare your heart to beat a bit faster as a jolt of love stirs your circulation. making you realise that in the end all the hard knocks have been worth it. Love does make the world go round and any person can soon forget their history of heartache. Personal relationships are taking the turn for the better and those that have become too stale, stagnant or borne out of habit have a spark injected into them. Keep moving forward, do not give up or turn away, be willing to go out on a limb if you have to and try something completely different for a change. A new job or change of employment responsibilities could occur so just focus your attention on being the best you can be. That is all you have to do and you will have everything under control. Follow what feels right and you can’t go wrong.
“Every thought is a thing” they say, well this applies to you in as much as this is not the time to just think but also the time to speak and then take action. We all know you aim to please but right now your honesty is not only appreciated - it is necessary and it is your responsibility in the scheme of things to deliver. Say what you mean and mean what you say, harmony will be the rd September 23 eventual result. nd October 22

Do not settle for less than you want or need, but at the same time you need to be aware that things will probably not take the path and direction that you expect. There will be some unexpected corners to veer you off the path when you least expect it. You have tremendous influence over a delicate situation. Positive thinking will allow you to shine brightly, allowing you become the centre of attention this week.
SAGITTARIUS Some hidden truths have made their way out recently and it has caused you
to go off centre, but also to lean on what is working, is right and is well in your world. By the weekend we see the free-spirited Sagittarius rise once more and when you are in this mode anything goes and anything can happen. Put your November 22nd - foot on the accelerator and hang on – you are in for one fast ride. December 21st
CAPRICORN Take the weight off your feet; it is time for a breather. Use this time to gather
yourself together and review your plans. An experience feels brand new and this adventure is allowing a sense of inner liberation to take place. It is time to make the most of something no matter what is going on, so let go of any December 22nd - expectations or the need to control outcomes and let the universe decide where it is going to take you. The urge to fight for what you want is high in you this week. Perhaps you need to fight for what you love and love the thing you are fighting for. There seems to be no middle ground when the thing you want and need means the world to you. A fearless Aquarian who is willing to take up the sword for a swift conclusion is quite intimidating – your courage goes a long way.
As you come out of your safe cave and start to rise above emotional situations that have occurred recently, be aware that there are also those who will come along and try to knock you back down. Someone in your life may find your new-found confidence a threat. You are talented, creative and intuitive - the key here is to raise yourself even higher, do not ignore them but teach them from example how to behave.
This is a very easy-to-make bread recipe with none of the arm-breaking kneading involved. The outcome is a lovely, lacy bread that you can add all manner of different herbs to as you go along. You can also add some chopped onion if you want but, as that is moist, cut down just a wee bit on the warm water to compensate. As the weather starts to cool a little, there’s nothing to beat a loaf of home-made bread - Give it a go !
No Knead Bread Ingredients:
● 375gr plain flour ● 4gr active dry yeast ● 10gr salt ● 395ml warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C ) ● 0.6gr chopped fresh rosemary (optional) ● 0.8gr chopped fresh thyme (optional) ● 0.7gr chopped fresh sage (optional)
(Serves 4)
Directions Combine the flour, yeast, and salt in a large bowl and mix to combine. Add the water and herbs, if using, and mix well. The dough will be very sticky and shaggy-looking. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside at room temperature for 18 to 24 hours. Generously flour a work surface. The dough will have risen and will be covered in bubbles. Transfer the dough to the work surface and dust it with flour. Fold the dough in half, and then form the dough into a ball by stretching and tucking the edges of the dough underneath the ball. (Note: To ensure the dough is fully risen and ready for the oven, do the “Poke Test”: flour your index and middle fingers, and poke the side of your loaf about half an inch deep. If the indentations spring back, the dough still needs
more time to rise. When the indentations stay put, the loaf is ready to bake.) Liberally flour a kitchen towel (do not use terry cloth). Place the dough ball on the floured towel. Cover with another floured towel. Let the dough rise for about two hours in a warm place. Preheat the oven to 450ºF . Place a lidded Dutch oven or deep heavy duty casserole dish (with lid) into the oven to preheat. Carefully remove the hot baking dish from the oven. Remove the lid and gently turn the dough ball into the ungreased baking dish, seam-side up; shake the dish so the dough is more evenly distributed. Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake until the crust is golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the loaf from the baking dish and let it cool on a rack before slicing.

once again, outrageous Jimmy savile laid to rest ... was it supposed to be a dinner plate or a CD? satellite landing on a half moon on the stage this time wearing a thonged red number with a similar disc shaped “skirt” and the same type of mask but in a different colour. Certainly, it was THE night of the year for the totally weird and wonderful oufits.

aged 84, just a day before his 85th birthday. A Requiem Mass will take place today (Wednesday) at the Roman Catholic St Anne’s Cathedral in the town. The coffin was what Sir Jimmy had told his family he wanted, that and to be buried at a 45º angle so he could see the sea from his last resting place at the Woodlands council cemetery in Scarborough that overlooks the town’s North Bay. The ivory lace gown, designed by Edith Head, that Audrey Hepburn wore in the final scene of the 1953 film Roman Holiday, and later to the Academy Awards when she won her first Oscar is to be sold at auction on November 29th at the Kerry Taylor Auctions
house in Dulwich, south east London. The dress that Hepburn wore in the film – dubbed by the star as her “lucky dress” – was teamed with a jacket and hat and was altered for the Oscars to include spaghetti straps

Quakes have biggest impact on health
The results of the latest study on the effects of natural disasters on people’s health is particularly relevant for the people of El Hierro Island in the Canary Islands, who have been living with tremors of up to more than 4 on the Richter scale for weeks now. After studying data on natural disasters worldwide for the past 10 years, researchers at Harvard University concluded that earthquakes have a bigger impact on health than other natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes. In the past decade, earthquakes have caused more than 780,000 deaths – almost 60% of all disasterrelated mortality. As well as the immediate deaths, many people receive serious injuries which cannot be treated because of the quake damage to
infrastructure. Other disasters, such as floods and hurricanes typically cause many deaths from drowning, but fewer injuries. Children are often at higher risk of injury and death during earthquakes than adults. In Haiti in 2010, 53% of patients were younger than 20 years old and 25% were under five. Depression can also be common after earthquakes – affecting up to 72% of the population. The researchers found that after the 1999 Turkey earthquake, 17% of the population had suicidal

Light 'promising' tool against cancer
Light is a "promising" tool in the fight against cancer, according to researchers at the National Cancer Institute in the US. In their study, they used an antibody which targets proteins on the surface of cancerous cells. They then attached a chemical, IR700, to the antibody. IR700 is activated when it is hit by near infra-red light, a wavelength that can
penetrate several centimetres into the skin. To test the antibody-chemical combination, researchers implanted tumours into the backs of mice which were then given the drug and exposed to near infra-red light. The tumour volume was significantly reduced compared to untreated control mice and survival was significantly prolonged. The researchers said this

selective killing minimises damage to normal cells and the combination was "a promising therapeutic and diagnostic agent for the treatment of cancer". Currently, treatments for cancer can be separated into three categories: blasting with radiation, surgically removing a tumour or using drugs to kill the cancerous cells. All have side effects and scientists are trying to come up with more precise therapies. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said the research was promising but added that the experiment was done with mice and it was much too early to tell if it will work in people with cancer.

Ronna Clark Is it possible for you to put my letter in the letters column? It’s a letter to the thief who stole a beautiful evening dress from the SOS stall at La Trocha market. We would like everyone to keep a look out for the person wearing a long black off-the-shoulder evening dress with black and white fine feathers at the bust line, and pearl beading on sections of the dress. It was a very expensive dress that was donated to SOS to raise much needed funds to feed the
J A Bassett I watched the final ceremony at Wooton Bassett, where the town has been granted Letters Patent designating it ‘Royal’ because of the respectful honour it accorded – during almost four years – to more than 350 dead service men and women returned to the UK through the town. The Princess Royal, Prime Minister and (new) Defence Secretary were present. Once again, expressions of praise, gratitude and remembrance were freely made. How, then, can the
Lars Hosbjerg After reading your article ”What happens if someone dies”? I would like to refer to: “Declaration de Voluntad Anticipada” – which is a paper you make to tell the surroundings what you want.
Jane Newman With all the Remembrance Day services etc., going on this week, I thought you might like a new poem that has been written for modern times. SOS Animal Charity dogs in our care, and some despicable person seemed to think their need for a posh frock was greater than the needs of the hungry dogs. Editor says: I have a fridge magnet that says: “The more people I meet, the more I love my dog.” I think it was probably made about people like this. I know times are hard and, although I don’t condone it, I can understand it if someone had to take food to survive but, an evening frock?
Give me strength! Whoever you are that stole it, I hope you feel thoroughly ashamed of yourself and it would do a lot of good to either take it back, undamaged to the CHAIN shop in La Trocha or to The News offices in Coin and no more would be said. You can’t wear it as now around 75,000 readers of The News are going to be looking for it so, don’t even think of throwing it away and do the decent thing – give it back!
by email government allow, let alone support, the disenfranchisement of retired military personnel simply because they now live abroad? There are both moral and democratic deficits in this situation, especially since the government is proud of having put the Military Covenant on a legal basis. How can it not see the blatant discrepancy? The people of Royal Wooton Bassett have shown what they think of our armed forces. Are our politicians showing what they think of
them by denying their right to vote in their homeland? Please everyone – help us all by making sure that as many British citizens as possible are petitioning for the permanent right to vote for all British citizens where ever they live. We all know that having the vote does not put right many problems, in fact not a lot – but it is a first step. Wrongs will never be sorted out unless at first one has representation! Solidarity Among Brits!

Animal astronauts This week I want to pay tribute to all the unsung heroes of space travel; that is the animals that tried it first.
N
ovember 3rd 1957 saw the launch of a Russian dog called Laika on board Sputnik 2. Scientists believed humans would be unable to survive the launch or the conditions of outer space, so they viewed flights by animals as a necessary precursor to human missions. As little was known about the impact of space flight on living creatures at the time of Laika's mission, and as the technology to de-orbit and return to Earth had not yet been invented, then there was no provision for Laika's survival.
L
aika was a three-year-old female mongrel found as a stray wandering the streets of Moscow. Soviet scientists chose to use stray dogs since they assumed that such animals had already learned to endure conditions of extreme cold and hunger. Her true pedigree is unknown, although it is generally accepted that she was part husky and part terrier. To adapt her to the confines of the tiny cabin of Sputnik 2, she was kept in progressively smaller cages for periods up to 20 days. The extensive close confinement caused her to stop urinating or defecating and caused her general condition to deteriorate. In truth she was undernourished and dehydrated.
L
aika was placed inside the capsule of Sputnik 2 on 31st October 1957, three days before launch. At that time of year the temperature at the launch site was extremely cold and a hose connected to a heater that was meant to keep her container warm failed. Therefore two assistants were assigned to keep a constant watch on Laika before launch. Sensors showed her heart rate was 103 beats/min before launch and increased to 240 beats/min during the lift off. Laika completed three orbits of the Earth. But after seven hours into the flight it was decided that she had endured enough and no further sign of life was received from the spacecraft. Poisoned food had been fed to her.
1947. The rocket achieved 68 miles high that qualified it for space travel before successfully parachuting back to Earth. In 1949 Albert, a Rhesus monkey, was blasted into space and this time reached 83 miles high. Unfortunately the parachute failed to deploy and Albert hit the ground at over 1,300 miles an hour.
O
n January 31st 1961, Ham the Chimp was launched in a Mercury capsule aboard a Redstone missile. Ham had been trained to pull levers to receive rewards of banana pellets and avoid electric shocks delivered through electrodes fitted to his feet. His flight demonstrated the ability to perform tasks during space flight (and avoid getting electrocuted). Three months later, on May 5th 1961, the United States sent Alan Shepard into space to become the first American in space.
O
ther animals have been on further journeys. On September 14th 1968 the Russians launched a tortoise (what!) around the Moon and in 1969 two bullfrogs were launched on a one-way mission into deep space to study the effects of space motion sickness. The crew of Apollo 17 carried five mice to the Moon and back although one died and was ‘ceremonially buried’ in space – via the toilet waste dump.
S
ive months later, after 2,570 orbits, Sputnik 2 disintegrated – along with Laika's remains – during re-entry on April 14, 1958.
ince then a whole menagerie of animals have been in space. From silk worms to chickens’ eggs and Madagascar hissing cockroaches to South African flat rock scorpions. But my favourite has to be on June 28, 2007 when Bigelow Aerospace launched Mexican jumping beans into space. What in God’s name did they expect to discover from that?!
B
S
F
ut although Laika was the first animal to orbit the Earth she was not the first in space. At least 10 other dogs were launched into sub-orbital flights before the historic date of April 12th 1961, when Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. The Americans had first launched fruit flies (of all things) on board a captured German V2 rocket in February
o take a minute to salute the brave unsung heroes who weren’t given the choice but instead were chosen to boldly go where no man had gone before.

F1 car name changes agreed The long-running row over the use of the Lotus name in Formula 1 has ended with an agreement for both teams involved to change their cars' names. A meeting of F1 bosses has approved a request for Renault - sponsored by the Lotus car company - to change the name of their F1 cars to Lotus in 2012. And Team Lotus will from next year run cars called Caterhams, and change their team name accordingly. The Virgin team will also change the name of their chassis to Marussia.
Stoner snatches last gasp victory The last race of the 800cc had drizzling rain falling intermittently throughout, and an accident before turn one that left four of the main riders in the gravel.
victory but he exited very gingerly from the very final turn allowing the double world champion to snatch victory back from Spies by just 0.015sec. Stoner later said “I made a mistake and went into neutral and Ben came past and rode a good few laps. I didn't know how I could get past him but I realised I could get a much better drive out of the last corner so I tried to get as close as I could. "I got fantastic drive out of the final turn… sorry to Ben!" smiled Stoner. It was Stoner's tenth victory of the year.
Alvaro Bautista’s front wheel was touched by Andrea Dovizioso’s rear wheel and resulted in Bautista losing the front of his Suzuki, he in turn then brought down factory Ducati team-mates Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, plus Pramac Ducati's Randy de Puniet. The accident was hugely frustrating for the Ducati riders, since their bike had performed well in damp conditions throughout the weekend. Pole sitter Stoner was soon disappearing, riding to a ten-second lead until the rain intensified with six of the 30 laps remaining. The Repsol Honda rider almost instantly lost all of his advantage as Ben Spies and Dovizioso homed-in on the #27. With two laps to go Stoner's Honda got out of
shape on the brakes, forcing him wide and allowing Spies into the lead. The Factory Yamaha rider, who took his first win in similar damp conditions earlier this year at Assen, was looking like he was about to get his second
British rider Cal Crutchlow managed to finish fourth – the best finish of his MotoGP career – as he claimed the rookie of the year award.Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Crutchlow sealed his best MotoGP finish and the rookie title by overtaking Abraham on the final lap, with the Czech rider clipping Crutchlow's rear wheel and running off soon after. Abraham crossed the line eighth. Loris Capirossi, making his 328th and last Grand Prix start, rode from twelfth on the grid to ninth. The Italian raced with the #58 on his Pramac Ducati as a tribute to Marco Simoncelli.
Honour for ‘Super Sic’ The Misano grand prix circuit in Italy is to be renamed in honour of Marco Simoncelli. Simoncelli was killed in a crash in Malaysia last month but lived less than five miles away from the circuit in his hometown of Cattolica.
Luca Colaiacovo, president of the circuit's board of directors, said: "We owe it to Sic's memory. We are happy and proud to associate Misano with Marco Simoncelli, a worldbeater in sport and life." Misano returned to hosting a round of the

MotoGP championship in 2007, with Jorge Lorenzo winning there this year. Simoncelli was fourth in that race but will now be forever associated with the circuit. "It is a tribute to his family and to the hundreds of thousands of fans that admired his courage and humanity," Colaiacovo added. "I will meet the family in order to announce our decision and to thank them for both their helpfulness towards us and for the love they've been able to communicate to all of us at this terrible time. Lauro Golf Open Win for Axarquia Rugby Under -17’s Nearly two hundred entrants participated in four disciplines of bowls at the Lauro Open between 15th and 29th October. In the first round of triples D. Carr's team from Miraflores B.C. beat R. Robinson's team from Mijas B.C. 21 - 8 and G. Kain's team from Santa Maria B.C. beat hot favourites B. Todd's team from Benalmadena B.C. 18 - 16. After some really excellent bowling they beat Linda Hall and her team from Mijas B.C. 18 - 17 in a very exciting semi-final then ran out comfortable winners over G. Aldridge's team also from Santa Maria B.C. in the final. Thirty-seven teams competed in the mixed pairs and once again the bowling was of a very high standard. In the quarter finals S.Walker and A. Turner from Los Amigos B.C. beat Mike Detheridge and D. Chambers 22 - 16. Whilst hot favourites Mary Detheridge and Brian Todd of Benalmadena B.C. just managed to beat N. Ewen and B. Gregory also of Benalmadena B.C. 16 - 15 after an extra end had to be played they then went on to
win a very good semi-final against A. Turner and S. Walker 17 - 15. In the final they had a comfortable win 23 - 13 over Pam and Trevor Burgin from Lauro B.C. Claire Dye from Lauro B.C. came out winner of a very strongly contested Ladies Singles competition beating Pauline Ball from Mijas B.C. in a very good final 21 - 16. In a very strong field of mens singles all the hot favourites went out in the early rounds. M. Detheridge to T. Burgin 14 23 B. Todd to G. Ellwood18 - 21. T. Frowd to G. Aldridge 16 -21 and A. impressive display of running rugby and skillful ball handling to defeat their league opponents, Bahia 89 from Cadiz province, by 2905 points, earning themselves four points for the win, and an additional bonus point for scoring more than four tries. Axarquia Cadetes now move up to 3rd in the league and next Saturday, 12th November, host the team from Gibraltar Rugby Club. Kick-off is at 17.00. The senior side fared less well on Sunday 6th November, going down 918 against Almeria Rugby Club and now face a tough away game against Jaen on Sunday 13th November.
Axarquia Rugby are creating a strong club and really welcome all newcomers to either come and play or just to support. For more information on joining Axarquia Rugby Club, please ring Michael on 669899064 or 952514898

Kaymer wins WGC Tournament e voice Martin Kaymer stormed to victory in the WGC Champions tournament with a breathtaking back nine of 29 in a nineunder-par closing 63. The German overturned an overnight deficit of five shots behind Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson into victory by three strokes with a brilliant display of putting, collecting nine birdies in his last 12 holes. It was a stunning performance from the former world number one – who claimed his first World Golf Championships victory with this win. "On the back nine I made nearly every putt that I looked at," Kaymer said “I can't remember a day when I have played that well. In Abu Dhabi this year I played brilliant golf but the way I played here was just amazing. "I hadn't won for 10 months. I was hoping I
could get another one before the end of the year and it is nice that it is at such a big event." Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell collected a welcome thirdplace finish with a
closing 67 that left him 16 under par, four strokes behind the winner. Fellow Irishman Rory McIlroy 22, who now goes off to enjoy a two-week holiday, finished a shot further back after a 69 that threatened much more after the current US Open
champion began with birdies at the first two holes. McIlroy replaces Lee Westwood as world number two after the Englishman's three-overpar 75 dropped him to a share of 13th. England’s Paul Casey joined McIlroy in a share for fourth place, Casey stormed to the turn in 31 but could only collect nine pars on the inward half of a closing 67. Justin Rose was left heading to next week's event in Singapore rather than back home after failing to claim the top-six finish he needed to be sure to be eligible for the season – ending at the Dubai World Championship. The Englishman finished seventh and needs to play in either Singapore or Dubai to be sure of playing sufficient European Tour events to be eligible for 2012's Ryder Cup.
of BBC’s football results is to retire The BBC's Tim Gudgin – the voice of Saturday teatime football results on the TV – is to retire. Known for his distinctive rising and falling intonation, the BBC veteran is hanging up his microphone after more than 60 years. Gudgin is due to do his last Final Score on 19th November, the week before his 82nd birthday. Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker said: "Saturday afternoons will never be the same again."

England plead with FIFA over poppies The FA are refusing to give up their fight with FIFA to let England's footballers wear their poppies with pride at Wembley on Saturday. General secretary Alex Horne sent a letter to the world game's governing body on Monday in the hope of persuading Sepp Blatter to change his mind. FIFA turned down the initial request because they view the poppy as a political symbol which, under their rules, players are not allowed to wear on their kit.

Tiger Woods has revealed he was hurt by Steve Williams's race comment but insisted his long-time former caddie "is certainly not a racist". Woods added: "It was a wrong thing to say. We're moving forward. It was hurtful certainly, but life goes forward. It is a comment that shouldn't have been made and he certainly wishes he didn't make it." Woods said he had spoken to Williams about the remark, but declined to reveal exactly what they discussed.

There's an ongoing competition for the best overall match snacks and a presentation night and party at the end. Malaga’s French defender Toulalan goes flying
Bore draw at Betis Real Betis 0-0 Malaga With over 500 Malaga supporters in Sevilla for another Andalucian derby, Malaga were hoping for another three points to maintain their European league spot. The opening of the game was poor with neither side creating any real chances. Both sides had speculative long shots but neither side looked like scoring. The second half was slightly better, Pozuelo for Betis looked lively but Malaga seemed more intent on gaining a point
than striving for the win. On 55 minutes Rondon met a Duda cross only to see his header well saved by Casto. That would have been a little harsh on Betis. Ex Betis player Joaquin tried hard for Malaga but the final ball was poor, and Gamez shot in the side netting when he should have done better. Overall it was a lacklustre Malaga peformance against a poor Betis side that were there for the taking. Report By Scott Forbes

The third fight against Ali was on October 1st 1975, in an encounter in the Philippines that famously became known as 'The Thrilla in Manila'. It was held in a sweltering arena in Manila as part of Ali's world tour of fights in 1975. Nearly blinded by Ali's punches, Frazier still wanted to go out for the 15th round but was held back by trainer Eddie Futch in a bout Ali would later say was the closest thing to death he could imagine. Frazier retired in 1976 after losing to George Foreman for the second time in his career but came out of retirement for a fight in 1981 before ending his career for good. His only losses were to Ali and Foreman.

FOOTBALL
Chelsea’s John Terry could be recalled for friendlies Fabio Capello could be forced to recall John Terry for the Spain game amid concerns that Phil Jagielka will withdraw from the England squad because of injury. The England manager had said Terry will miss Saturday's match against the world champions for purely football reasons, insisting it has nothing to do with allegations of racism that have been made against his skipper. Capello wants to 'check other players' and has described the impressive Jagielka as 'the driver' of his back four when Terry has been absent in the past.

Kimi Raikkonen in line for return Rubens Barrichello’s Formula One future looks increasingly uncertain after a major Williams shareholder said the team were talking to 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen about a possible comeback. Christian ‘Toto’ Wolff said that Raikkonen, who won his title with Ferrari, was one of several names on their list of possible drivers for next season. He said: “We are in conversation with Raikkonen . But he is only one of several options.”
