ieves break into secure drugs warehouse Thieves broke into a police warehouse in Malaga port over the weekend and made off with some 600 kilos of cocaine stored there. The theft was discovered by security guards early on Monday morning. The warehouse, which stores drugs seized by the security forces until they can be

destroyed, is allegedly top secret because of the nature of its contents. A police source said it is often full because the ovens available for destroying the

drugs have a limited capacity. It is located only 300 metres away from a Guardia Civil barrack. CONTINueD ON PAge 2

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Stay safe

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

This week in health and beauty you will find some editorial as promised a couple of weeks ago about the technical process I went through to have my teeth whitened – which, by the way are still nice and white. I think it is important to know with any procedure that involves anything to do with your body that safety is paramount with whoever is carrying out the work and, as I’d been asked, have a look and learn how it was done. There’s also a report on what happened at the seminar I encouraged everyone to go to recently to find out what to do if anyone dies. There was a fantastic turnout and I hope people learned a lot. The article is on page 15. In a couple of weeks we will be moving offices again. Yes, I know, we only moved a year ago but the useable space with a full bathroom and kitchen and great long corridor hasn’t been ideal and people have found it difficult finding us so, we’re off again. This time we shall be just outside Coin on the Coin to Cartama road, opposite la Trocha Commercial Centre and above where de Cotta law have moved to. It’s a nice, big light and airy office ideal for all the artwork we have to do and we won’t have to be yelling up and down corridors to find out who’s doing what... aah, peace at last! We were at the Tamisa Golf Hotel again last weekend and had the best Chateaubriand I think I’ve ever tasted (just as an aside – while we were actually in Chateaubriand, France, on a bike tour, they did great Pains au chocolat – yummy!) A friend of mine in the uK sent me this little message, so I thought I’d share it with you all: Women are Angels. And when someone breaks our wings, We simply continue to fly....on a broomstick. We are flexible like that!

Election campaign enters last lap The two major candidates for prime minister held their final mass rallies on Sunday, with just six more days to go before the election campaign ends officially at midnight on Friday. In Zaragoza, Socialist Party candidate Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba warned supporters that a new government – especially a centre-right one – would not end the crisis. He said changes of government are not the solution, adding that the country's economic policies "need to be revised because they are not giving us the results we need right now". He said "We need to jumpstart the economy” and promised “I will go to Brussels to fight and argue, not take notes like Mariano Rajoy will." In Valencia, Rajoy was given a rousing welcome at a rally that packed out the city's bullring. For the

first time, the PP leader admitted that he believes he will win Sunday's election: "I think that we are going to win the elections. In fact, I believe it and I know it." Polls have consistently given the PP a 12 to 5 per cent lead over the Socialists.

Output between July and September was unchanged compared with the previous three months, and up just 0.8 per cent from a year earlier. Domestic spending continued to contract, but

Meanwhile in Madrid, Carlos Martínez Gorriarán of the Union Progress and Democracy (UPyD) platform called on undecided voters to give his party a chance. He said: "These elections are the last opportunity we have to change things in Spain. If we don't act now, they will come from outside of Spain to change the policies for us."

WEATHER WEATHER TODAY

Police are now trying to work out what happened. Apparently it was a highly professional job – the thieves neutralised the security camera system and penetrated the strong room with a thermal lance which can melt metal at temperatures of up to 4,000º C.

Police are also working on the hypothesis that they had inside help.

Protection for domestic workers a Royal decree approved by the Cabinet last week stipulates that domestic workers must be paid the minimum wage of €641.40 a month and that discounts for food and lodging or any other concept cannot amount to more than 30 per cent as opposed to the 45 per cent discount currently allowed. From next year employers of domestic workers will also have to pay social security for them from the first hour worked. Until now, employers were exempt from this for the first 20 hours worked.

The decree also stipulates that domestic workers should be given written contracts instead of the verbal agreement allowed now. They will also be entitled to the two extra month's wages that other

workers receive by law. The decree does not alter the working day of a maximum of nine hours. If the domestic worker is fired, he/she will be entitled to a severance pay

of seven to 12 days wages for each year of service. The decree, which comes into effect on January 1st 2012, does not make domestic workers eligible for unemployment

Navarre region not to be annexed Navarre regional premier Yolanda Barcina has asked the Partido Popular's presidential candidate, Mariano Rajoy, to eliminate the clause in the Constitution that provides for

a referendum on the annexing of Navarre by the Basque Country. At a meeting of 1,500 people at the Palace of Congresses in Pamplona last week, Rajoy promised that

this would be among the constitutional reforms he intends to introduce if he wins the November 20th general election. The annexation of Navarre is one of the key

elements in Basque nationalists' plans for an independent state, which would straddle the Pyrenees to include the French Basque Country.

Two Britons killed in helicopter crash A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed on Monday the deaths of two British nationals in a helicopter crash in Mallorca on November 12th. TV footage showed smoke rising from wreckage in woods in Coll

de Sa Gramola, which set fire to half an acre of woodland. The two men, who have not been named, died instantly when the aircraft plunged to the ground after bursting into flames in the air.

A spokesman for Mallorca's Emergency Services said the British Consul was taking steps to identify the dead men and contact their families, but it was not known if they were residents on the island or holidaymakers.

He will reportedly meet with his lawyers in the coming days to prepare his defense. In a statement released in Washington before he left last Friday, Urdangarin said that he will defend his "honour and innocence" in the ongoing so-called Operation Babel investigation, and will issue a statement after a Palma de Mallorca judge lifts the secrecy of the case and the details are known. Urdangarin allegedly made profits of 170 per cent over the real costs of the sports and tourism

events his Nóos Institute organised for the Balearic government in Palma de Mallorca between 2004 and 2006. Urdangarin, a former Olympic handball champion, founded several business ventures after retiring from sports, including a real estate firm called Aizoon which he coowns with his wife. The investigation shows that Aizoon received at least €275,000 through the Nóos Institute during one of the Palma events. So far, the Royal Household has not made any public statements.

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to cope with the laws and regulations in Spain? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually within 48 hrs? Woman's death sparks outcry A spokesman for Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron hospital said on Monday that the 65-year-old Girona woman who died from complications of an aneurysm in September was not operated on immediately because of "technical failures". María del Carmen Mesa's family has claimed she spent 65 hours

shuffling between three public hospitals in Catalonia before she was finally arrived at the internationally famous Vall d'Hebron hospital. The family have blamed the hospital for not treating her in time and regional premier Artur Mas, who has made sweeping cutbacks in the healthcare system in recent weeks.

The family has filed a lawsuit against the hospital, which denies any wrongdoing. The president of the OMC medical association, Juan José Sendín, told reporters he could not tell them if Sra Mesa was not treated because of the cutbacks but a death had occurred “and it must be investigated”.

Franco homage banned Because it coincides with the general election, Madrid's Provincial Electoral Council has banned the ceremony held every year on November 20th in the city's Plaza de Oriente to honour the memories of dictator Francisco Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera,

the founder of the Spanish Falange. Primo de Rivera was executed by the Republicans on November 20th, 1936, and Franco died after a long illness on the same date in 1975. The various associations which organise the ceremony have postponed

it until the following Sunday. When it was pointed out to Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero earlier this year that he had called the general election on the anniversary of Franco's death, he said: “It's just another date as far as I'm concerned.”

Merkel: 'neo-Nazi' murders shameful German Chancellor Angela Merkel has described the murders of nine immigrants and a policewoman by a suspected neo-Nazi cell as "shameful". The case has made headlines across the country, knocking the eurozone crisis off the front pages. Police believe eight ethnic Turks, an ethnic Greek and a policewoman were murdered by members of the hitherto unknown "National Socialist Underground"

over a period of more than 10 years. The group only came to light last week when one alleged member surrendered and two others killed themselves. German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich told the daily Bild that investigators were trying to discover whether a larger

militant network was at work. The immigrant victims were all small businessmen – mainly kebab stall owners – who were shot in the face in broad daylight. The far right in Germany is small but over the years has carried out periodic attacks on immigrants.

Police take Rio's biggest slum Hundreds of police and navy commandos backed by armoured military vehicles and helicopters moved into Rio de Janeiro's biggest slum, Rocinha, before dawn on Sunday to clear it of drug gangs. No shots were fired and there were no incidents. Police are trying to clear Rio's shantytowns of drug

gangs ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. Since 2008, they have occupied some 20 slums, or favelas, to drive out the dealers who controlled the areas. Police had announced their plan to move into Rocinha last Wednesday and scored an early success on Thursday when they arrested alleged drugs kingpin Antonio Francisco Bonfim Lopes as

he tried to escape Rocinha in the boot of a car. Police will now establish a permanent base in the favela with officers trained in community policing and city officials will move in to provide services such as healthcare and electricity. Pacification has been generally welcomed in favelas, where residents have seen a drop in crime.

Remembered Torture Border row carries on well by most enquiry This year, millions of people across the UK attended the annual Remembrance services in churches, around remembrance memorials and in the streets of the nation – observing the two minutes silence at 11am in honour of those who died in the two world wars and in all conflicts since. Thousands of serving and ex-service men and women filed past the Cenotaph in London’s Whitehall on Sunday, the national memorial to those who have been killed whilst serving their country, and the pavements to either side were packed with onlookers. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “The public hugely respect what our service people do and the professionalism with which they carry out their duties. We’re here today to remember those who have sadly paid the ultimate price.” The Royal British Legion National President, UK, Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely said: “Remembrance Sunday is a time for the nation to unite in its reverence for the British Armed Forces past and present. When we bow our heads in reflection we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two world wars. We also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world remembrance and the two minutes silence are as important as ever.” Military outposts such as Camp Bastion in Afghanistan – which is Britain’s largest base – and other military bases across the globe held their own services. Meanwhile it was reported that thieves stole a black diamond and ruby encrusted enamelled poppy designed by Garrard’s jewellers in London after it had been purchased at the annual Poppy Ball by an unnamed

purchaser who bought it on the strict understanding that the first person to wear it would be Catherine Jenkins when she sang before the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall’s annual Festival of Remembrance last Saturday night. The Royal British Legion had handed over the jewel to a junior member of staff for her to deliver to Ms Jenkins but she had put it in her handbag and, noticing that she had a few minutes to spare, stopped on her way for a coffee and the handbag was stolen. The handbag was later recovered and only the poppy brooch was missing. Catherine Jenkins said she was “distraught” but Garrard’s have pledged to make a copy of the poppy free of charge, and say that they hope this will satisfy the buyer.

According to this week’s Sunday Telegraph, passengers arriving from abroad aboard coaches at the port of Dover have not faced proper immigration checks since 2007.

Juan Mendes, the UN’s special rapporteur on torture has voiced concerns about limitations on Sir Peter Gibson’s enquiry into allegations of British complicity in torture. Various groups have already refused to cooperate with the enquiry because the final decision on what will and will not be made public from the enquiry will ultimately rest with the government. The enquiry was announced by David Cameron after claims that former Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohammed was tortured with the knowledge of the British Secret Service. An enquiry spokesperson said: “We wish to hear all evidence in public unless the panel decide it should be heard in private.” The enquiry continues.

The revelation is set to put even more pressure on beleaguered Home Secretary Theresa May. The paper claims that, to ease queuing times, border guards have merely checked the photographs on passports handed over against the person standing in front of them, and have failed to cross-check the details against the Home Office database designed to keep out terrorists and known criminals. The relaxation, which was introduced under the Labour government was only halted after senior border officials were suspended following checks on the systems over the summer.

EWS Army “can cope” IN BRIEF

UK

Stalking Moves are afoot to make stalking, in person or online, a specific criminal offence. In 1997 the Protection Against Harassment Act was introduced but hundreds of victims say that their lives have been ruined because of stalking and claim that laws did not go far enough to fully protect them. Scotland adopted the legislation in 2010. UK

Poisoned Two children ended up in hospital on Monday after contracting botulism from a jar of Loyd Grosman’s Korma Sauce. The children ate the sauce last Monday and started to show signs, including blurred vision, by Tuesday and by Wednesday they had been confirmed as being infected with botulinus after hospital tests had been carried out. 1800 jars from a certain batch have since been removed from supermarket shelves but inquiries are still being carried out to find the source of the contamination. Two jars of the sauce were taken from the family home.

General Sir David Richards, the Chief of Defence Staff, has said that he is “pretty confident” that the army could reduce its numbers by a fifth without any new redundancies being made, in a move to reassure soldiers following recent reports that a further 16,500 personnel, including 2,500 soldiers that had lost limbs or been injured while serving their country would not have their jobs saved. He dismissed reports that 350 amputee soldiers were being targeted to be axed

saying that there was no such policy. The fear followed the leaking of a memo by a junior captain stating that there was no prospect of protection for the wounded. General Richards insisted that figures released in the memo, leaked to the Daily Telegraph last week, were speculative and crushed suggestions that the wounded soldiers would be forced out. The government has ordered the army to slash its numbers by almost 20% by 2020.

Old, but not daft! Video of an 89-year-old member of the House of Lords apparently giving a colleague a ‘V-sign’ in parliament when he referred to her age has become an unlikely hit online. Thousands have flocked to watch the moment Conservative peer Baroness Trumpington appeared to make the gesture at 78-year-old former defence secretary Lord King. It came as he remarked on people who could remember the world wars looking "pretty old" and

motioned towards Baroness Trumpington. But she appeared to give a "two-fingered salute" while he was halfway through his sentence and before he paid tribute to her war service. However, the baroness – who worked as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park during her 20s – denied making a rude hand signal. "I didn't mean to make the gesture. My hand must have flown up," she told the Daily Mail. She added that she didn’t remember doing it and was not offended.

Parque Animal case goes to court On the first day of the trial of Parque Animal director Carmen Marin on charges of abuse at the Torremolinos-based animal shelter, the Malaga court received a Guardia Civil report which confirmed that 2,183 animals were put down over a period of 20 months using a dosage lower than the one recommended for a swift death. Brit wounded over debt A 65-year-old Briton was attacked in a Mijas street on Sunday by a man claiming payment for construction work done at the Briton's home. When people witnessing what appeared to be an argument saw blood flowing from the Briton’s neck they called the police who called an ambulance. The man was taken to Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella where doctors found that the wound in the neck was not as lifethreatening as it had seemed. However, the Briton, who has not been named, was still in hospital at press time while his attacker, a Spaniard, was being held awaiting arraignment.

organisation El Refugio, the private accuser in the case, has claimed that this was 250 per cent over the maximum permitted number of 872 in that period of time. The Guardia report also stated that the lower dosage was used allegedly to save costs. As a result, the animals took several minutes to die and some were allegedly stored in a freezer while still alive. The

report also stated that many of the animals were put down by Sra Carmen, who is not a qualified vet, without any veterinary supervision. Sra Carmen has denied the accusations. She told the court that “all the information provided by El Refugio is inaccurate”. Two vets and the shelter's manager are also accused of complicity.

Province with the most bars Malaga is the province with the most bars and restaurants in Andalucia, with a total of 11,812 establishments, according to figures released by La Caixa’s department of economic studies. In turn, Andalucia is the Spanish region with the most bars and restaurants – 48,120 out of a national total of 287,820. After a steady rise in numbers since 2005 at a regional and provincial level, the figures for 2010 dropped by just under 10 per cent, reflecting the impact of the economic crisis. SEVILLA

Unesco inspects Pelli Tower A Unesco delegation arrived in the regional capital last week to assess at first hand the impact on the city’s skyline of the Pelli Tower, which would be 178 metres high when finished. Construction was halted when Unesco told the city authorities that it could lead to the withdrawal of the city’s World Heritage status. The tower is located 1.5 kilometres from the historical buildings – the Cathedral, the Archive of the Indies and the Royal Alcazar – that originally earned the city that status. MIJAS

Police investigate ‘Vado’ licences The local council has ordered the police to investigate the “Vado” (no parking) signs on garage doors in an attempt to root out the people who are using them without the necessary permit. In an inspection of 417 such signs, the police found that 122 did not have the council’s licence. Councillor Juan Carlos Gonzalez has warned people who have put up the signs without a licence that they face a fine of 700 euros if they are not removed immediately.

Memo from

Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

TGINO

Y

es, thank God it's nearly over – before we all fall asleep out of sheer boredom. With all the polls giving the Partido Popular a huge lead, we can assume the result is a foregone conclusion. The last general election was also a foregone conclusion, thanks to Zapatero's lies about the economic crisis. However, it was fun watching him go to such extremes as accusing Rajoy of being a traitor for daring to mention the word crisis. There was also the possibility that people would cotton on to his lies, but unfortunately he was only telling them what they wanted to hear so there was no last minute upset. But enough of Zapatero, who has been keeping such a low profile recently that I'm not sure if he's still alive. However, I look forward to seeing what his fellow Socialists will do to him if the polls prove right and the Socialists suffer their worst defeat since the return to democracy. Unfortunately, the stocks are not a traditional form of punishment here, unlike the “vile garotte” which I'm sure some Socialists will want to use on him!

Supercaba

T

here have been a few light moments, however. I was walking past the telly the other night on my way from my computer to the kitchen when my attention was caught by a bunch of folks in what appeared to be a research laboratory staring wordlessly at something off screen. This was followed by images of other groups of people in offices and schools doing the same. Curious, I stopped to see what they were looking at. Was it a bird? Was it a plane? – No, it was Supercaba on a television screen reassuring them that all will be well if they vote for him. If the rest of the campaign ads are anything like this one then I'm glad I've missed most of them.

T

hen we have Cayo Lara of the Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) encouraging people to rebel – rebelate! Yea, I thought, that's rich

Wicked scheme coming from a perfect little Stalinist like you. Lara is a card-carrying member of the Communist Party, the biggest group in the IU conglomeration of small parties – some of them so small that they have only a handful of members. He's the man who rushed off to Extremadura threatening to excommunicate IU members there who decided not to vote against the PP man who got the most votes in the regional election in May. Fortunately they had minds of their own and allowed the PP man to take over in a region that has been a Socialist stronghold since before the Civil War. Lara backed down, muttering something about freedom of choice.

T

he IU leader before him, Gaspar Llamazares, also a card-carrying member of the Communist Party, said after the 2004 election that the PP must never be allowed to govern the country ever again. There are only two ways of achieving that. Either the Socialists governed so perfectly that nobody would ever want to vote them out ever again, or they were kept in power by a coup. So rebel you people out there – put the IU in power and you'll never be allowed to rebel, or vote, ever again.

T

he most interesting thing about this election is the date. It's the 36th anniversary of Franco's death and I can't help wondering if Zapatero chose it in the hope it would remind voters of the horrors of a right-wing government. If so, his little ploy slipped by unnoticed. People under the age of 36 have no experience of living under a dictatorship and those over the age of 25 can remember how the PP cleaned up the mess left by the last Socialist government in 1996, when Spain had a huge deficit and the highest unemployment rate in Europe.

T

hat's why Rajoy keeps saying – we did it then and we can do it again.

E

F

arewell Zapatero! Although he didn’t weather the financial storm – as many other European leaders have also failed to do – he rode it out as much as he could. Next week, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero will become the fifth prime minister to have passed through Moncloa since democracy was restored in 1975, leaving behind a questionable legacy to be pondered and defined by future historians. But let’s face it, all of Spain’s prime ministers have left office with arguable legacies. Zapatero, unfortunately, became a victim of the global crisis. Whether he failed to act immediately to try to ward off a ferocious economic downturn isn’t in question; he has acknowledged this, in fact. But again most European leaders were also overly confident that the chain of reactions set off in early 2007 with the US sub prime mortgage fiasco would not make their way across the Atlantic. Then came Northern Rock’s failure later that year only to be followed by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, a Titanic that pulled in hundreds of financial institutions when it went under in late 2008.

B

esides his last minute ditched but fortuitous efforts to keep Spain, for now, from seeking a Brussels bailout, Zapatero was successful in introducing a host of legislation that made this country into one of Europe’s most progressive nations. Some of the biggest reforms in history drummed up by the Socialists were aimed at equality and justice for everyone living within Spain’s borders. Zapatero has been the only prime minister to have completed such a difficult task. And while the opposition Partido Popular has threatened to “tweak” some of these reforms and challenge others if it wins Sunday’s elections, the PP leader Mariano Rajoy stands to stir up considerable social discontent if he goes as far as repealing these acquired rights.

O

ne of the biggest challenges facing the PP will be how far Rajoy will go to change the current abortion law. Under the 2010 law, women can obtain an abortion up until the 14th week on demand, and girls as young as 16 years old can undergo the procedure without having to specifically tell their parents or guardians, if it is determined that the action would cause “a serious conflict” between her and her family. There are the Catholic sectors inside the PP that are pressuring Rajoy to scrap the

entire law but the PP leader has been vague as to what he will do. Abortion has become and will always remain a painful bunion for the conservatives. Another piece of legislation that has the far-right up in arms is the 2007 Biomedical Research Law that allows for therapeutic cloning. Spain is one about two dozen countries that permit cloning for medical treatment but continues to ban human cloning. The Assisted Reproduction Law from 2006 allows the genetic selection of embryos to help cure siblings, a regulation that has also irked Catholics.

D

uring the prime ministerial candidate debates on November 7th, Socialist Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba pressed Rajoy on whether he intended to repeal the gay marriage law of 2005. Rajoy didn’t want to answer but later said that he favoured domestic partnership registrations, but not marriage, when it comes to giving homosexual couples legal rights. The PP wants to wait and see how the Constitutional Court will rule on its now six-year-old appeal to have the law revoked.

O

ther laws we can thank Zapatero for, and hope the PP won’t tamper with, include the strict sentencing guidelines on domestic violence perpetrators, child molesters and terrorists. We can assume that the PP will also try to tinker with the Historical Memory Law, making it more difficult for families of Civil War victims to seek closure, and establish tougher rules for migrants coming to and remaining in Spain. Rajoy has always said that Spain needs an orderly immigration policy, but has also failed to explain what he would intend to do.

T

he next four years – if the next government that is ushered in on Sunday lasts that long – are going to be filled with tension, hostilities and perhaps political retaliations that serve no purpose except to stagnate a country that is already suffering from a vicious cycle of high unemployment and large deficits. What is chilling is that if the PP wins, they will do more to dismantle the cutting-edge social policies that Spain has struggled so long to constitute rather than concentrate on fixing the economy. This wicked scheme is the right-wing’s customary vengeance over the left.

Community News New dirty tricks from Brownie pack enjoys lots of trips and events highway gangs In light of the new era we seem to have found ourselves in, these two situations have recently been added to the already long list of dirty tricks employed by highway gangs operating in Spain. The first, a baby seat is placed by the side of the road in a secluded spot, often close by woods or in a similar remote location, probably early evening or at night, in the seat is a fake baby or a blanket covering what appears to be a baby. The idea is to entice a passing motorist to slow down and then stop. Once the trap is sprung, the well meaning victim is beaten, robbed and, if a woman, possibly raped. The second, eggs suddenly smash over your car windscreen, the driver instinctively stops or

presses the wiper washer button, in this case the eggs will turn milky and smear the windscreen, sufficiently so to obscure the driver’s vision, forcing the motorist to stop. Once again the gang’s trap is sprung and victim is beaten, robbed and again, if a woman, possibly raped. When a similar incident was very recently reported to the police here on the Costa del Sol by a lady driver, who despite her extreme concern fortunately did not stop, this was their comment and this their advice. "There are several things to be aware of ... gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car. Do not stop for any

reason, dial the police and report what you saw, don't even slow down”. There may be cunning variations on this theme but the basic advice is the same when encountering any unusual situations in a remote spot. Don't stop, drive on and call the police as soon as possible – this way the culprits may become victims of their own trap. The numbers to call are: national police 091, local police 092, Guardia Civil 062 and the pan European emergency number 112.

The girls went to the ARCH Rescue Centre to find out all about the charity and to help out with the grooming and feeding of the horses, ponies and donkeys. A great day was had by everyone and the brownies made a donation to the charity. Next they were off on their weekend pack holiday to Granja Escuela Hacienda Albuqueria in Coín, with an Alice in Wonderland theme. The girls worked for their holiday badge and their out and about badge

and had a wonderful time. Then they had their Halloween party where all the girls dressed up and had a fun filled spooky evening.

Next to look forward to will be Christmas and the New Year! For more information on our Brownie unit please contact Vicki Mayson 952 450 790.

Revolution in the Spanish Electricity Market Increased competition between Spanish electricity suppliers means customers get cheaper bills and better service in their own language, according to the CEO of Evergreen Eléctrica S.L. The days of customer dissatisfaction, of phone calls being answered by a machine, eternal waits to be attended or of websites in only Spanish or Catalan are numbered. Evergreen Eléctrica CEO said, “Many foreign residents are fed up with the lack of information, the way they are treated and only getting bi-monthly bills.” New supply companies are now spearheading a revolution in flexible customer service and fairer prices. Thanks to recent government regulations, changing supplier is easy and does not need a new meter or huge amounts of paperwork. There is even a choice of rate according to when most of a household’s electricity is consumed. One can now decide in which language to receive bills as well as obtain personal online access to get billing or consumption information and this is clearly seen when

comparingwww.evergreenelectrica.com with other electricity companies’ websites. Phoning the supplier no longer has to be a frustrating experience as more consumer orientated companies are willing to give immediate personal attention in different languages. Consumer protection is ensured by the fact that suppliers are obliged by law to be financially solid, pay up huge guarantees and for their personnel to have extensive knowledge and experience of the system to be able to navigate the complex bureaucracy of the Spanish electricity market. Since the deregulation of the electricity market in 2009 and further legislative action in 2010, the government’s large administrative and judicial machinery is wholeheartedly backing up new energy suppliers and enforcing the cooperation of the major distributors. This commitment was clearly demonstrated in May of this year when the “Comisión Nacional de la Competencia” (similar to the UK Competition Commission) fined Endesa, Iberdrola, Unesa

and Fenosa to the tune of 61 million euros for breaching competition law and price fixing for large consumers. According to Gert Uth at Evergreen Eléctrica it is important to make a stand against the big companies’ quasi-monopoly of today’s energy agenda and their subsequent price fixing, because only by creating more competition, can a fairer deal for the customer be achieved. Evergreen Eléctrica S.L. is a Spanish/Scandinavian electricity supplier with headquarters in Fuengirola and operates throughout the Spanish peninsula. Based on solid financial backing, the company is run by qualified engineers and business people with extensive experience in the energy industry. Contact: Gert Uth, CEO, Evergreen Eléctrica S.L. by email at gju@evergreenelectrica.com, call her on 951 773 477, or visit the website at www.evergreenelectrica.com. Recent seminar on deaths is a huge success JK’s in Coin recently opened it’s doors to let in a crowd of people wanting to know what to do if someone dies. Peace of mind can come at a fairly low price – but only if you know what to do. The packed venue saw men, women and couples all turning up because they had realised that, if a loved one died, they hadn’t got the foggiest idea of what you have to do with all the rules and regulations there are here in Spain. Speaking to a capacity crowd – and JK’s is a large venue! – were Jon Sutton from De Cotta Law, the Venerable David Sutch and lay preacher Caroline MacFarlane to tell everyone about what Christian religious services were available, Tracy Burns who has worked for a local funeral parlour for four years and Kath Dillon to help with financial planning after the event. Tracy Burns opened the seminar by explaining who she was and how she could help. She went on to say that you can choose whichever funeral director you wish but you should always carry their card with

you. In that way you cannot get badgered by unscrupulous “ambulance chasers” who may very well double or even treble the cost of your chosen funeral at a time when you are at your most vulnerable. By thinking ahead you would be able to let your chosen funeral parlour know exactly what you might want before you die and your wishes could be carried out. Your funeral director would deal with transport of the body, the style of coffin you wanted, refrigeration if necessary– so that loved ones from abroad could say their last goodbyes – and, in the case of her funeral directors, interpreters at a time when they were most needed. They will also deal with repatriation of a body and all the relevent certificates for that. They would come to your home to sort out the paperwork and also liaise with any religious service arrangements you may have made, arrange the flowers you want, the music and even deal with the cancellation of passports. Cost wise, a basic funeral would be in the region of €2,200 to €3,000 and a

“niche” in the local cemetary costs in the region of €300 for ten years, then around €30 per annum thereafter. Jon Sutton from De Cotta Law explained that it is very important to have a Spanish Will if you own property in Spain. If you do not make a Will in Spain, a British Will should stand but, it is much more complicated to “prove” the Will and therefore, in the long run, more costly. After a Death Certificate has been issued your lawyer will go to the Spanish Wills registry to search and see if you have a registered Will – which is the norm in Spain. Recently, all life insurance policies sold also have to be registered here. If you have a joint bank account, the half that belongs to the deceased will be frozen until the Will has been proved, although any Direct Debits for electricity etc will carry on and the only person who will have access in the meantime to your account will be your funeral director. Your lawyer will also cancel pensions being paid to the deceased and get the balance from all bank accounts at the date of death from which

inheritance tax calculations are made from. If you are not married, the inheritance tax is generally calculated then doubled! There is an allowable sum applied to each beneficiary after which the tax is calculated on the whole amount. It will normally take a minimum of two months before the process is finished, at which time the property can be transferred into the beneficiaries’ names and any residual estate split as per the deceased’s Will. It should further be noted that the fiscal value and catastral value of your house are vastly different– with each area having a different formula to work out the value. In Coin, for instance, the fiscal value of a house is deemed to be three times that of the catastral value, while in Alhaurin el Grande it is four times. There is a common myth that says that if you do not report a death within a certain amount of time, you don’t have to pay any taxes. This is not true and, in the age of computers you would undoubtedly get found out. If this happened, they would charge you up

to 50% extra! And again, if there are no children benefitting from the Will and the estate is left to a friend, inheritance tax would double. In Spain, it is the beneficiaries who have the job of distributing the assets, not the executors as it is in the UK. The Venerable David Sutch explained that religious services can be as orthodox or as simple as you want but it is wise to plan this ahead as well. The service would be in English and you can have English hymns. If at all possible, David and/or Caroline would visit you in your home to discuss what sort of service you would like and arrange the order of service together with any readers of tracts from the Bible, poems or just a talk about the deceased’s life and what kind of a person

they were, often with some amusing anecdotes of things to remember them by! You could also choose any photographs that you may want to use during the service. Kath Dillon explained that there are many options of what to do with any money you may have inherited and would go along and talk to you about the best options for you once everything has gone through and you are feeling less fraught. So, the main thing is that people are now aware that they need to prepare in advance – being left in the dark when a loved one dies is even worse and knowing that everything is sorted beforehand allows you to grieve properly with less of the blind panic that sets in if you don’t know what to do. by Kym Wickham

Don’t get nicked light up, light up with extras In the lead up to the festive season, Customs are again reminding the public of the obligation to declare on importation, all dutiable goods that have been obtained outside Gibraltar. The objectives of this exercise are to safeguard the local economy in the collection of duty on all personal imports and minimise disruption at entry points at this busy time of the year. In order to facilitate and expedite clearance procedures, persons travelling abroad, including those on organised trips to Spain, are encouraged to obtain a simplified Personal Declaration Form and present this to a Customs Officer on arrival. Customs have circulated forms to local travel agents

and are working closely with them on the procedures to be followed. Those travelling in a private capacity or on organised trips with operators in Spain can collect forms from Custom House, Waterport, or Four Corners Station. Alternatively these can be downloaded from the government website www.gibraltar.gov.gi/hmcustoms ‘Import Duty Form’. Further information can be obtained on Tel 20046728 / 20078879 (Fax 20078362). Additional resources will be deployed at the main entry points during the period and failure to declare any goods will result in court proceedings or fines being imposed.

There have been a number of ill informed statements by individuals in various media about the fate of the trees at the Engineer Lane Car Park. As stated by the government on 12th October none of the trees have been cut down. Some have been pollarded, as is normal, and remain in situ. Those that have been pollarded and removed remain in storage and will shortly be replanted.

Reasers are reminded that the quality of the bathing waters at Western Beach is subject to deterioration at any time and without warning. This is due to the discharges from the storm drain constructed by the Spanish authorities in La Linea. Discharges and the contamination they cause can be heavily influenced by the quantity and duration of any rainfall. The quality of the bathing waters at Western Beach will continue to be monitored weekly.

Rediscovering Eldorado Since the BBC's ill-fated “sex, sun and sangria” soap opera folded in 1992 after just 156 episodes its purpose built setting has had a chequered and often unhappy history. Today, however, it has reinvented itself as a hotel and activities centre.

T

he fictional town of Los Barcos was situated in the middle of the pine woods near Coin, simulating a “pueblo blanco” with town square, church, bars, a small shopping mall with bank, post office and pizza parlour . There was a small modern urbanisation, a hotel, a filling station, a very up-market swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar overlooking a lake and an iconic black Andalucian bull looming out of the trees.

A

s well as the actual film sets the complex contained portacabins for the film crews and changing rooms for the actors, so when the whole place was turned into a hotel the obvious name was Cuidad del Cine – Film City. Over the years it has been abandoned, changed

hands, opened, shut down and opened again but it has continued to intrigue visitors. Even almost twenty years since the last episode hit the television screens it is surprising how many people you meet who had some connection with Eldorado. Take for instance my neighbours Paco and MariaJose – they tell the story of how when the budget didn't run to employing proper actors they, and other admin staff, were roped in to fill the gaps in the cast and – as youngsters – they appeared silhouetted in the sunset holding hands in the final episode.

N

ow it is under new management once again and the site has had a facelift. The hotel and surrounding buildings have

been repainted yellow and green and there is a lot more happening up there in the pine woods. A local restaurant chain has taken over the catering and offers wedding receptions that can be held in the old town square (though you couldn't have the service in the church since the building has only a front wall and if you go through the door you walk into the woods!). The pueblo is also used for more violent pursuits and, together with the adjoining woodland, forms part of the backdrop for pseudo military activities in airsoft events. The old town is now gated but if you ask in in the restaurant they are happy to let visitors in to look around.

‘s

T

he lakeside bar, which I remember some years ago as being very

dilapidated and overlooking murky green water is now a restored to its former glory and is a mecca for fishermen, the lake being stocked with coarse fish. I have never been fond of fishing since our son was a young enthusiast – too many memories of sitting on soggy English riverbanks and unpleasantness with maggots – but in this sort of setting it could actually be attractive!

I

n another part of the complex is Rancho Eldorado where horses are available for guided rides through the woods. A long forest path leads from the gate along through the pinewoods and ends up at a mirador or viewpoint, overlooking the long sweep of countryside leading down to the coast. It's an easy walk on foot and a

great ride on a mountain bike too. On a clear day you can see for miles and the sea shimmers in the distance. There are views over the curious water tower near Alhaurin Golf and you can see how nature is stealthily reclaiming the scarred remains of the proposed

second golf course on La Mota – another victim of the ongoing “creesis”.

ldorado, Cuidad del Cine is just off the road from Marbella to Coin, exit at Los Llanos and follow the signs.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

e Immortals

On the set of “Melancholia” with Danish director Lars Von Trier

A

fter seeing a clip of “Melancholia” a few weeks ago, I said to myself, “This looks strange and weird , I have to see it”. So, this week I got to see it, and I wasn’t disappointed. The exciting thing about seeing this movie, was that I had no idea what it was about or what to expect – “Melancholia” had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

By Tarsem Singh, starring: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Luke Evans, Freida Pinto, John Hurt If you loved 300 with its epic tale and studio enhanced pecs then this latest swords and sandals saga is a definite must-see. The Gods may have won their battle against the Titans but now a new evil threatens Greece. King Hyperion (Rourke) and his bloodthirsty army is tearing through the country in a search for the Epirus Bow which invests its owner with enormous powers. Now, the Gods are forbidden to come to the

aid of man, but without a bit of help the story would be over all too quickly. So luckily Zeus (Evans) secretly defies the edict governing Godly behaviour and secretly works to encourage a humble peasant called Theseus (Cavill) to assume the mantle of hero and lead the people in a rebellion against Hyperion. It's as daft as 300, but like the Zack Snyder beefcake epic it is full of energy with stunning visuals. Snyder is

currently shooting Superman: Man of Steel, and young Brit actor Cavill, known for TV's The Tudors, has been using his finely honed pecs to continued good effect as Clark Kent/Superman. Mickey Rourke chews up the scenery as the evil King and Slumdog's Freida Pinto plays a virgin oracle who falls for our hero. Don't expect anything remotely like historic content, and it won't win any awards. But The

T

Immortals is a rattling good yarn – great to look at and a real guilty pleasure.

he prologue is more or less the telling of the whole story in just over ten minutes, however the way it has been put together is absolutely stunning. The photography and music have a sadness and longing in them that entices you from the start.

T

hen the first act “Justine” commences. The opening scene is rather quirky and bizarre. The bride and groom are in a limo on the way to their reception, when the limo driver has some difficulty in getting around a corner in the countryside. It’s a slow, but entertaining scene, especially when the bride and groom both offer to help the driver by taking turns in trying to get the vehicle around the corner.

hen the newly weds finally arrive at the reception, the movie really starts to take off. Justine, the bride, quickly becomes distracted and bored at the reception, and begins to act rather strangely. The weird thing is that the whole time you’re watching this, she hardly says anything and you don’t quite understand what she’s doing or why, but you’re fixated. Another odd thing about

“Melancholia”, is that it could be set in almost any time period, I mean you can tell it’s set in the 21st century, because of the limo, but apart from that, it could be in the 1500s.

T

he second act is “Claire”, which starts at the aftermath of the wedding reception. Justine is extremely weak and goes to stay with her sister, Claire, brother-in-law John and their son. Justine seems to be affected by the planet approaching the Earth’s atmosphere, while Claire is worried that it will hit Earth instead of just flying by, but John assures her that scientists have said it will miss.

M

ost of this movie is filmed by hand, which is unusual, and almost every shot is a picture perfect photograph. “Melancholia” could be described as a weird art movie, but I see it more as an opera, filled with sadness and hopelessness . To a point it almost makes you uncomfortable, and the atmosphere is enhanced musically by the excerpts from Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde”.

Wake up, Aries, and smell the coffee - you need to be fully aware and alert this week making sure that you pay attention to the details. Be as upfront and honest with others as you dare and this will put a stop to any hidden agendas that may be percolating. You may have been neglecting loved ones recently, so this week restore the balance, invest some time and put the spice back into your love life.

As you know, I’m on a diet so this is pretty good for all in our group with only 7.5 “extras” per serving. It is an amazingly light Christmas pudding which is wickedly indulgent! You can make it from up to three months before Christmas and then store it in a cool, dry place. Steam it gently for 3 hours on Christmas morning and serve with a flourish.

There is magic in the air this Friday, bringing changes that are designed to work in your favour. Jupiter the planet of fortune is now in your sign, showing that you will receive the benefits of the work you are putting in now around Christmas time. Slowly the pieces of your jigsaw of life are being revealed and the bigger picture is making itself known. However, make sure you cover all your responsibilities and obligations.

Ingredients:

You could find yourself quite emotional and dwelling on all those things that need to be fixed and changed this week. Prepare to feel restless and anxious as your tolerance level is reaching its limit. Once you get over your occasional bouts of a “lack of faith” that keeps you in a doubtful mode, you will realize that you are soon to be on the fast track to success. Immerse yourself in your environment and get ready for a journey to greener pastures. This is no time to cave into popular opinion and follow the crowd as you are being singled out to take the lead, speak up and steer the ship. You will be blessed this week with a magnifying lens for you to see with crystal clear vision the truth of a troubling situation. Your intuition is spot on so trust yourself. Key relationships improve as you find strategies and solutions. By the weekend you will be ready to party and let your hair down. Riding the tide of uncertain emotions is something that you are not a stranger to and it looks as though this influence is here again. Every time you are close to making your mind up about someone or a re-occurring situation - niggling doubts wash over you. You can often see things as they could be but perhaps not how they are, make sure that the future you are visualising is your dream and not someone else’s. You are on the path to great prosperity with opportunities looming at every corner. It is up to you to be willing to take a chance when you feel it is the right time. Instead of hiding in the background this energy wants to take you to the frontline so that others can see and appreciate your expertise and wisdom. Speak from your heart even if you feel vulnerable doing so, as good things could happen as a result.

There are always others who are worse off than yourself and there are also those who are better off, regardless of how good or hard your life appears to be. You will be starting to experience a great hunger for more depth in your life and you will meet connections that can withstand the test of time. It is all September 23rd - about having faith and some patience as by the weekend everything starts to October 22nd fall into place.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

You are becoming more aware of the value and quality of what you have and are putting structures in place to ensure it is protected. Others around you may not be at your level of understanding or awareness and even though your intentions are honourable they may be unable to commit to the future. This week reveals more about your acquaintances and close relationships, showing you who you can really trust and who is really there for you when you need it.

SAGITTARIUS A reward phase is on its way and the full effects will be felt in about a month’s

time. All eyes are locked onto you so make sure you get things right and let others see you at your absolute best. Take the extra time on your appearance, for example – go that extra mile. The more people around you the better, this November 22nd - is an excellent time for socializing and making contacts. Have some fun and December 21st let your hair down – you deserve it.

CAPRICORN Fed up with playing by a certain set of rules? I suspect that these rules have

not been sitting well with you for a long time now. Inside you could be feeling a bit rebellious and are not happy with giving so much of your power away to a situation or another person. You need to create the balance and give yourself December 22nd - a chance to take your place in the driving seat for a while. Perhaps there has been more going on than meets the eye. January 19th

AQUARIUS

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

Lately you have been on an emotional high but now you could be feeling the anti-climax of all this excitement - it is as if your kite has fallen down through absence of wind. You may be experiencing a certain sort of emotional let down, the energetic down turn can create the feeling of giving up or letting something go because there just does not seem to be enough point. Soon you will be on your feet again and the winds will return.

Something in your life could be making you feel like you took something past the point of no return - just know that this is not the case. Do not be afraid of the truth, the greatest gains are made when you can live with full integrity and honesty regardless of how the rain may fall. You know that you can move forward with a clear conscience and this will enable you to access a rare sort of bravery.

Christmas Pudding ● 227g/8oz mixed dried fruit ● 1 tbsp brandy ● 57g/2oz self-raising white flour ● 85g/3oz fresh white breadcrumbs ● 57g/2oz dark brown sugar ● 170g/6oz carrots, finely grated ● 1 cooking apple, peeled, cored and grated ● 1 level tsp mixed spice ● ½ tsp grated nutmeg ● pinch of ground cinnamon ● grated zest of one orange

(Serves 10)

● grated zest of one lemon ● 2 large eggs, beaten ● 142ml/¼ pint Guinness or stout ● 25ml brandy, for serving

Directions 1. Put the dried fruit in a bowl with the brandy. Turn the fruit over in the liquid and leave to soak for several hours or overnight. 2. The following day, mix together all the ingredients, except the eggs and Guinness, in a large mixing bowl. Then stir in the beaten eggs and Guinness, remembering to make a wish! 3. When the mixture is thoroughly mixed, pour it into a 1.2 litre/2 pint pudding basin. Cover with a double thickness of greaseproof paper and then a piece of foil and tie securely with string. 4. Place the pudding in the top of a steamer above

gently simmering water. Cover with a lid and steam gently for 7-8 hours, topping up the water in the bottom of the steamer, as necessary. 5. When the pudding is cold, replace the covers with clean ones and store in a cool, dry place until Christmas Day. Feed it each week with a half teaspoonful of brandy poured into small holes made by a skewer. 6. Reheat on Christmas morning by steaming gently for 3 hours before turning out on to a serving dish. Decorate with a sprig of holly or pour over the brandy, set it alight and serve it flaming

TV STAR CUTS THE TAPE AND MINGLES WITH GUESTS

TOWIE star curries favour in Essex... ... but it was a shame about the clearly visible Bridgets! Lauren Goodger, one of the stars of The Only Way Is Essex, spent Monday night opening a new Indian restaurant in Brentwood. The restaurant, formerly called the Headley Arms was relaunched as Headley Spice with the TOWIE actress cutting the red tape. The 120 seat restaurant has businessman Faruk Kamali behind it who has catered for some of Hollywood’s top celebs but still said he was excited to be working with Lauren on Monday.

Ahead of the launch he told Brentwood Weekly News: “Most of the locals have probably not tried authentic Indian cuisine, but I am positive that once they visit Headley Spice, they will love the food. We have cooked for celebrities all over the world, including Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion, but I think catering for Lauren Goodger, a true Essex girl who’s popular locally and across the country, will be a fantastic experience.”

green sari instead of her usual tight fitting clothes, the twenty-five-year-old mingled with other guests throughout the evening looking comfortable and relaxed. She had matched her eyeshadow to the material of the sari and the only thing out of place was that, from the back, her “Bridgets” were clearly visible. Next time, dear, try wearing either flesh coloured knickers or a thong that would be invisible!

Have a Brazilian to go straight Let’s hope they don’t catch on! Since the creation of straighteners there's not a set of locks in the land that haven't lusted after smooth and shiny strands. Whether you've tight curls, soft waves or movement in your mane there’s now a way to go straight and do it without causing damage to your frizzy mop. A Brazilian blow dry puts straightening serums and special shampoos out of business because after one session your hair is left suitably kink-free and touchably soft giving you a blow dry finish every time you wash your tresses for up to four months. It works by injecting pure keratin (the substance that exists naturally in nails, skin and hair) into your strands, so the process

is nourishing not punishing to your hair.

Your hairstylist will talk you through the treatment first, and after your hair is washed and rough dried, the product is applied. It has to be left on for 30 minutes or more, depending on your hair type, and once your strands have soaked up all of the good goo, the keratin is dried into your hair. You'll be shown how to dry you hair with a brush, taking it under the hair and pointing the dryer downwards as normal. To lock in the lustre special keratin straighteners, that are exceptionally hot, are run through your hair leaving it sleek, super soft with envyinducing swish-ability.

You'll have to be careful which products you use afterwards as ones containing sodium chloride can strip away the keratin so speak to your stylist about this aspect of the treatment. You won't be able to wash your newly straightened locks for a few days after the treatment and it can look a little flat so you'll have to work with hair accessories and ponytails until your first wash.

Once you do wash your hair for the first time you'll be amazed by the ease with which your hair sits straight and how healthy it looks. Girls with curlier tresses may have to run their straighteners over part of the hair to complete the look, but the treatment has cut one reporter’s wash-to-

dry-to-straight time down by over an hour. What are you waiting for then girls? If you’re fed up with the frizz, Kiss Hair and Beauty Salon is carrying out the treatment. See their advert on the Health and Beauty page to book your appointment.

The usually impeccably dressed Mrs Beckham blew it as she attended a fashion conference in New York on Monday night, bringing baby Harper Seven, who was born in July, with her. She posed in a fab looking royal blue and black figure hugging dress and high court shoes but, what were those things clinging to her legs?! They were apparently black leather leggings that had absolutely no place with the rest of the outfit. The lady has been noticeably absent from the fashion scene recently but

Bag a bargain at Age UK Dance Bargain hunters at the Age UK charity shops could be in for a bargain. The charity is running a “Donate A Coat” campaign aiming to highlight the plight of older people who cannot keep warm during the colder months. According to the charity over 200 people in the UK die needlessly every year as a direct result of being too cold.

So far Elle MacPherson has donated her Lis Ho camel cashmere coat worth £500 while Stella MacCartney has given three coats and Helen Mirren has also donated one. Ms MacPherson said: “Donating a coat to Age UK is easy and makes room for that new one you’ve just spotted. It’s the perfect recycle!”. She added that it was shocking that so many

people in a civilised country could die from the cold each year. The coats have labels such as French Connection, House of Frazer, Junky Styling, Miss Selfridge and Wallis among others. The charity said that all the coats will be distributed throughout their 450 shops in the coming months.

Lee Dance invites you to join their charity event on November 19th in aid of F.A.M.A at the Centro Idea’s Centro Sanum, Fuengirola. They begin at 5pm and finish at 7pm. Parkinson's linked to solvent Researchers from institutes in the US, Canada, Germany and Argentina have found that people exposed to trichloroethylene (TCE) in the workplace are six times more likely to develop Parkinson's. Although many uses for TCE have been banned around the world, the chemical is still used as a degreasing agent. Parkinson's can result in limb tremors, slowed movement and speech impairment. The exact cause of the disease is still unknown, and there is no cure. Research suggests a mix of genetic and environmental factors may be responsible. A link has previously been made with

pesticide use. Their study of 99 pairs of twins - one with Parkinson's, one without – found that exposure to other solvents, perchloroethylene (PERC) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), "tended towards significant risk of developing the disease". PERC, like TCE, is used as a dry-cleaning agent and degreasing agent, found in household products. CCl4's major historical use was in the manufacture of chlorofluorocarbons for refrigerants, but it has also been used a fumigant to kill insects. No statistical link was found with the other three solvents examined in the study – toluene, xylene and n-hexane.

White teeth - the technical bits! A couple of weeks ago I told you that I had gone through the procedure of having my teeth whitened and, yes, they are still gleaming! What I didn’t tell you are the technical aspects of what I had done that, to me anyway, are important as if the procedure isn’t carried out correctly, horrendous damage can be done to your teeth. According to The Vita Guide (a dentistry guide for shades that has 16 teeth of different shades on it and a number chart that denotes the shade) which Lynda from Perfect White Teeth used to measure the colour at the

start of the treatment – B1 being the whitest natural white – my start shade was the lowest score of a C4 and after treatment, looking under the lamp, they were about 11 shades whiter! Lynda explained the procedure as follows: “I start by measuring the colour of the patient's teeth, looking in the mirror and agreeing the shade. By doing so, at the end, people can see how many shades lighter they go immediately.” All the soft tissue such as your lips, tongue and gums are isolated with gauze, gel and a special retractor (the

blue device seen in the pictures) then an aspirator to suck any excess saliva away is put in your mouth – the same little hoover-like thing as would be used in a dentists. Lynda then uses a precleaner to get the best out of the treatment gel. The Ph level of the whitener is full strength at 5.5 and, once you have your sun goggles on a high range laser light, filtered by 12,000 optical fibres and 30 layers of special filters, is used for the actual whitening, killing any bacteria at the same time. Lynda says: “The Perfect White Teeth Company use a revolutionary global leader product that should not be confused with inferior mouth tray whitening offers. Ask the technician the Ph level of whitening products being used as it should perfectly match the natural Ph of your saliva and if a technician cannot supply this vital information you should consider if you really wish to go ahead... ” The treatment is over within an hour and there are no trays or squidgy gels to take home with you. My teeth were a little sensitive for around six hours after the treatment but were fine after that and was it all worth it? It most certainly was!

Peter Briggs I have a long interest in the history of WW1. In fact, with a group of friends, I was at the 95th anniversary of ‘The Battle of the Somme’ on the 1st of July this year. Congratulations are due to the fact that you have copied Laurence Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen” correctly. The words of his poem are so often wrongly quoted. How many times have we heard ‘They shall not grow

old’ instead of ‘They shall grow not old’ and my biggest gripe of all – ‘Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.’ Its not ‘condemn,’ as you rightly say its ‘contemn’. Bravo from a former Lancaster lad the same as Binyon! Even the RBL representative at the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate on the 3rd of July this year said ‘condemn’, although he got the first line right!

F W (Topsy) Turner In reply to the letter by Jane Newman (News 9/11/11). Madam, why in the world do you blame the leaders, (I assume you mean politicians), for the deaths of servicemen/women in Iraq and Afghanistan? For your information, I volunteered and joined the Royal Navy in 1958 for twelve years, and in 1960/61 National Service was abolished and since then, every single member of the armed forces has been a volunteer, and when one volunteers to serve in H.M. Armed Forces, he/she knows that they may be sent to some trouble spot, by the powers that be, and that there is a possibility that they will die there, doing the job they volunteered to do. I personally believe we should be in Iraq and Afghanistan, because bloodthirsty, callous dictators like Hussein, and equally bloodthirsty and callous terror organisations like AlQaeda must be stopped. It must be terrible to lose a loved one, but you Madam, and others of your ilk, should stop whingeing and whining about "leaders on T.V." who were responsible for the deaths of servicemen / women who didn´t join to die. When they volunteered to join the armed forces, they did in fact – as I, and hundreds of thousands of other Brits have done since the 60s – volunteer to die if, as you put it in your poem, they were posted to Iraq or Afghanistan. They knew the risks when they volunteered, and unfortunately, some of them paid the ultimate price, but it

was their choice to be there, so please stop demeaning their memory with your whingeing and whining. Finally, here is my little remembrance day poem to you, Madam, with all due respect to those we remember, because I’m sure they would agree with what I and my shipmates used to say as stated in the last few lines of this little ditty.

earn our pay No blame´s attached to anyone, the fault you see´s all mine and I knew that maybe someday, I´d die before my time I´d joined to serve my country, so that I could do my bit and if I´d been killed in action, then that would have been tough s**t!

DON´T WHINGE FOR ME

Editor says: The poem wasn’t actually written by Jane Newman apparently. She just sent it in as a more updated one. I like your one though and I’m sure you’re right. We must all be very thankful to all of our armed forces.

All of us who volunteered, on land, or sea, or air we all knew why we did it, we all knew why we were there out on the deep blue ocean, or on a mountain high or flying into danger, way up in the sky

CENTRO DE IDIOMAS COIN We were housed and paid, trained and fed and then we were posted, anywhere they said to Suez or the Falklands, or Borneo´s jungles green wherever we were needed, we went to serve our Queen That some would die was clear to us, but no one said, no, no and it wasn´t because of the leaders, that we knew we had to go we had taken the King’s shilling, as people used to say They´d trained us for this moment, and now we had to

he North Star, Pole Star or Polaris just happens to lie almost directly over the North Pole of the Earth, so as the Earth spins on its axis then this star appears to stay still while all the other stars appear to revolve around it. Like the hands of a giant celestial clock – with the Pole Star as the centre of the clock and all the other stars placed on the hands and turning anti-clockwise.

S

tars that are further out from the centre Pole Star obviously have further to travel around the circuit, while stars that are closer to the Pole Star carve smaller paths as they circle the sky. There are a few stars and constellations that are so close to the Pole Star that they are constantly visible in the sky and never set or rise below the horizon; these are known as circumpolar stars or circumpolar constellations.

North Star being that much lower down in the sky there isn’t the same amount of room below and so the poor old Plough dips briefly below the Northern horizon and is no longer visible.

F

I

rom the UK there are six constellations that never set below the horizon; Ursa Minor, Camelopardalis, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Draco and Ursa Major The Great Bear. The Plough, or as the Americans call it, ‘The Big Dipper’ are the seven brightest stars that make up a part of the Great Bear. The rest of the Great Bear is a bit indistinct if you don’t know what you’re looking for, but The Plough is one of the most recognisable constellations in the sky. It always reminds me of a giant saucepan with three stars forming the handle and four stars forming the bowl of the saucepan.

B

ecause the Pole Star is directly over the North Pole of the Earth then its height or altitude in the sky varies depending on where you are on the Earth. If you stood at the North Pole then the North Star would be directly overhead at altitude 90°. If you stood at the equator then the North Star would just be visible sitting on the horizon at altitude 0°. From London the North Star appears just slightly over half way up the sky at altitude 51°. But Southern Spain is further South than London is and so from here the North Star appears much lower down in the sky at only 36°.

A

t this time of the year the Plough lies directly below the North Star in the early evening sky. So from the UK because the North Star is quite high in the sky then there is enough room below it to fit The Plough in and thus keep it above the horizon. But in Spain with the

found this quite strange when I spent my first winter in Spain and suddenly an old familiar constellation as the Plough was no longer in the sky!

I

t is this variation in the height of the North Star above the horizon that was such a help to sailors in navigation. If a captain could measure accurately the height of the North Star then it would tell him his exact latitude north of the equator and a sextant was the tool of choice. The captain would look at the North Star through a small telescope on his sextant and then read off a scale built into it to find his latitude. The higher up in the sky the North Star was then the further north he must be.

S

adly the people living south of the equator don’t have a South Star to help them to navigate; we are just extremely lucky that we have a star so conveniently placed where it is, over the North Pole.

A

nd just to dispel a long held belief by a lot of people, whenever I ask folk which is the brightest star most say the North Star, well the North Star is NOT the brightest star in the sky, in fact it is really rather faint and unassuming!

Fantasy to reality for Nissan GT 370Z The GT Edition, 3.7-litre V6 state-of-the art, two-seat sports coupe that’s been beamed straight out of your PlayStation on to a road near you. And put a smile on the face of every person who goes anywhere near it. At a bargain-licious £35,000, few cars put video game fantasy in reach of the real world quite as well as the Nissan 370Z GT Edition. Highly recommended.

Hamilton finds his mojo Hamilton dedicated his win to his mum, but it required a gift from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel for the Englishman to take his third victory of a trying season.

Hamilton, who came into the weekend under something of a cloud, blaming personal issues for his slump in form, was strong in both practice and qualifying and he took the lead in the race on the opening lap when pole sitter Sebastian Vettel suffered a suspected puncture. From then on, although Fernando Alonso kept him honest, the Spaniard was never really in a position to challenge and at the 'flag Hamilton took the spoils at the Yas Marina Circuit by 8.4 seconds. “This result is just fantastic. I'm usually my own biggest critic – I'm always hard on myself when I make mistakes – but I really felt like I maximised everything today. To be able to sustain that kind of pace, under constant pressure, and not

make mistakes, is really satisfying,” Hamilton said following the penultimate round

“This is so uplifting – for the team and for me. in the F1 2011 World Championship. Jenson Button took third, passed by Alonso at the start and having lost time with KERS issues. Further back, Mark Webber was fourth, with Felipe Massa finishing one spot back after a costly spin late on. Nico Rosberg led home Mercedes teammate Michael Schumacher

Car giant Jaguar Land Rover has brought some welcome good news to the economy by announcing 1,000 new jobs as part of its drive to boost production over the next five years.

The jobs are being created in support of the business's ambition to deliver 40 "significant

'Don't even go there!' “It worked: I stopped my mind from wandering and I didn't allow myself to think about the win until I'd crossed the line. “To have Jenson on the podium alongside me was great too – great for me, great for him, great for the team, and a great boost as we move towards the end of the season. “The team has been fantastic all weekend – the strategy, the pitstops, everything – really topclass. The whole package came together today and I owe everyone a big thankyou.

Land Rover to create 1,000 new jobs

The company, owned by Indian firm Tata, said it expected thousands of applications for production staff and skilled tradesmen and women at its Land Rover plant in Solihull, West Midlands.

product actions" over the next five years under a multibillion-pound investment in product creation, likely to include a new Range Rover model. The government, unions and business leaders welcomed the news, saying it demonstrated the commitment of global investors to the UK.

Said Hamilton, “For most of the race I was concentrating on managing the gap to Fernando. He's such a strong driver. He'll never give you an inch, in fact. Into the closing laps I found myself beginning to think about victory, but I didn't want to do that really so I kept saying to myself:

Actor is charged Actor Kris Marshall has been charged with dodging a breath test. The 38-yearold star of BBC sitcom My Family and the BT adverts was arrested in a Tesco car park in Wells, Somerset, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Officers approached him shortly after midnight and took him to a nearby police station. He was later charged with failing to supply a breath specimen.

“To be able to walk away with a smile feels just fantastic: victory is good for the soul,” he concluded.

Combined Colleges CC 257 for 5 v Mijas Costa CC 137 all out Combined Colleges CC have been playing cricket in Andalucia for 25 years and in all that time will have seen few better days for their sport. Early light grey clouds and dew soon gave way to clear skies and dry grass in the outfield. With temperatures in the low twenties this was a perfect English summer’s cricketing day. Not bad for the middle of November! Electing to bat first, Combined Colleges were severely strangled early on by young club Mijas Costa CC. After four overs Combined Colleges were 13 for 2. Mijas Costa kept up the pressure and after 16 overs CCCC were on a measly 65 for 2, due in no small measure to Kevin’s spell of 7 overs, 1 for 21. But the tide was turning. Previn Menon and Mark Ward stayed together for another five overs before Mark was caught. In came Brian Barrett and he and Previn set about increasing the run rate and plundered 120 runs off the next 12 overs. Previn

seemed invincible. Then he hit the ball high over Matt Bush at long off only to see Matt, back pedalling as fast as he could go, which in all honesty isn’t at warp speed, raise his right arm high behind his head and bring it down again with the ball miraculously, impossibly, clutched in his hand! Even Previn might have applauded had he not been on 97, tantalisingly three short of a maiden century. Despite two more superb catches by MCCC, CCCC went on to finish on 257 for 5. Mijas Costa started their innings well, scoring faster than CCCC despite losing Matt in the sixth over. Then CCCC brought on their secret weapon as first change bowler. Coming out of retirement after more years than he may care to

think about, Andy Inman took two wickets in his first over and went on to end his spell with figures of 6 overs, 5 wickets for 47. And that, essentially, is the story of MCCC’s innings. Undone by a remarkable spell of bowling. A last wicket partnership of 35 took MCCC to 137 all out. And if that sounds like a rout – well it wasn’t really. It was just that on the day two batsmen could do no wrong and one bowler came good against the odds. No man of the match this week. Excellent catches, so nearly a ton and a couple of fine bowling performances meant that the honours were shared around – cricket was the winner here. Next week, Sunday 20th November Mijas Costa CC v Costa del Sol A By Ray Fry

prior to the game starting – an emotional and respectful experience for all concerned. To the game: conceding weight and strength in the forwards, Axarquia fought hard and a great first half saw both teams play powerful and skillful rugby with Gibraltar edging the contest scoring two tries to Axarquia’s one try, and Gibraltar went into the break leading by 12-7 points with all to play for in the 2nd half. Axarquia, missing their manager and a tactical halftime team talk, started the

second half poorly, conceding two preventable tries early on. Morale dipped, and eventually Gibraltar went on to win 39-7. It was a great display of rugby, with merit going to both sides for the spirit and sportsmanship that both sides displayed. Axarquia Rugby are creating a strong club and really welcome all newcomers to either come

and play or just to support. For more information on joining Axarquia Rugby Club, please ring Michael on 669 899 064 or 952 514 898. Training for Axarquia Rugby Club is held at the Fernando Hierro Stadium in VelezMalaga every Tuesday and Thursday from 19.00 for the Juniors and 20.30 for the seniors (all age groups welcome).

This is the third time that the trophy has visited the province of Malaga, although on the two previous occasions it stayed solely in the capital. The first time was in November 2010, when it was on display for two days at City Hall in the tour organised by the Andalusian Federation of Football. The second opportunity was more recently, on October 16th, in the Rector of the University of Malaga. The president of the council of Malaga, Elijah Bendodo, thanked the RFEF and the Andalusian Federation of Football "for bringing the Cup back to Malaga, for residents of the province to have the opportunity to be near her". Iniesta scored the dramatic winner, 27 minutes into extra time, to claim Spain's biggest ever sporting achievement. In a fiery game which always looked destined for extra time, English referee Howard Webb issued 13 bookings. The victory saw Spain become only the third nation to hold the European and world football crowns at the same time.

Eubank Jr is aiming to be better than dad Rangi Chase (R) insisted he was "still mates" with Benji Marshall despite the pair clashing, Marshall described Chase, who has opted to play for the Red Rose rather than his homeland, as his "brother" in the lead-up to the tournament.

England’s chance for final revenge England reached the final of the Four Nations after a tremendous 28-6 victory over world champions New Zealand at the KC Stadium. Hull winger Tom Briscoe set the home side on their way with a try in the corner and Ryan Hall added another. Although England dominated, Jason Nightingale pulled a try back for the away side to give the Kiwis hope. But further scores from James Graham and Sam Tomkins meant England set up a final with Australia at Elland Road. After the disappointment of 2009, when England were comprehensively beaten 46-16 by the Kangaroos, they have the perfect

opportunity to settle the score and win the Four Nations for the first time. Even though they will go into the game as favourites, the Australians will need to be wary of an England side that took apart New Zealand with ease. In addition to the four tries, Kevin Sinfield was excellent with the boot, recording a 100% conversion rate. The final will take place at Elland Road in Leeds next Saturday, when England gets another crack at a team it was beaten 3620 by at Wembley Stadium only last weekend.

Chris Eubank Jr, the son of the former world champion, believes he can be even better than his father after winning on his professional debut. The 21year-old middleweight stopped Lithuanian Kirilas Psonko in the fourth round on the undercard of Tyson Fury's Commonwealth title defence on Saturday. "I've got royal blood coursing through my veins. I can't help myself doing what my father did. I want to be able to prove I can become the same or better than him." He added: "It's been my dream ever since I was a young teen. There's a lot to live up to but it makes me want to work harder to prove myself."Eubank Jr was accompanied to the ring for a six-round contest by his father, to Tina Turner's Simply The Best – the same anthem that greeted his dad's ringwalks.

David Ginola to sue Gerard Houllier Former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder David Ginola is suing his one-time France coach Gerard Houllier. Houllier is alleged to have referred to Ginola in offensive terms in a new book, Coaches' Secrets. "David is absolutely incensed," a spokesman for Ginola told the BBC. "Houllier should stop talking like this. Stop singling David out." The pair have had an acrimonious relationship for many years, with Houllier often criticising Ginola's role in France's failed bid to qualify for the 1994 Fifa World Cup.
