THERE WON’T BE ANY MIRACLES - National News

PP euphoric, Socialists routed As the polls had been predicting for months, the Partido Popular swept the board in Sunday's general election. The PP won a very comfortable parliamentary majority of 186, but the Socialists did much worse than predicted – instead of 116 to 120 seats, that party got a mere 110. It was the Socialists' worst result since the first free post-Franco election in 1977. They even lost Andalucia, a region they

have governed for the past 34 years, although they managed to hold on to Extremadura. Apart from some of the Basque provinces, the political map of Spain is now a solid blue. PP leader and prime minister in waiting, Mariano Rajoy, warned euphoric supporters

outside party headquarters in central Madrid that there wouldn't be any miracles “we never promised any” – but assured them: "We will stop being part of the problem and will be part of the solution." CONTINueD ON PAge 2

PP euphoric, Socialists routed Socialist candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba conceded that his party had not had "a good result", while Defence minister Carme Chacon called it a "severe defeat". Outgoing Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said he would co-operate with his successor for the good of the country. Amaiur, which is a coalition of left-wing separatists, performed well as a result of the decision by Basque terrorist group ETA to abandon its four-decade campaign of violence last month.

The Economist also noted that Spain has much to be proud of, compared with southern Europe’s other troubled economies. “Its protesters are determined not to use rocks or firebombs. It has much less debt than Italy or Greece. And unlike those peers, who are now led by unelected technocrats, it has chosen its own captain to guide it through the storm.”

The economic picture facing the new government continues to worsen. Spain's borrowing costs continued to rise on Monday and the Madrid stock exchange (Ibex 35) closed 3.14 per cent down. With unemployment at nearly five million and a jobless rate of 46 per cent for young people under 25, PP campaign co-ordinator Miguel Arias said Spain was "going to make all the

According to the Guardian, Sunday's election result is a mandate for the indignados (the indignant ones) who question the very legitimacy of electoral politics and maintain that democracy is being eroded by the markets. The Guardian quoted Carlos Delclós, a Barcelona indignado: "Mariano Rajoy's task, at this point, is to try to guess what Merkel or the IMF want him to do before they tell him, so that his decisions look more like his own brilliance, and not the imposed will of dominant supranational institutions.” The Guardian concludes that the reality of a conservative government may dampen the mood of the indignados in the short term but predicts the movement will take off again next spring when people made unemployed by the crisis start running out of unemployment benefits. The Guardian said that this, combined with

Under the heading “Rajoy ahoy”, The Economist described Sunday's election results as “a victory of epic proportions. Not since Spaniards turned massively to Felipe González’s Socialists to run a country threatened by coup plotters, terrorism and inflation in 1982 has anyone been handed such parliamentary firepower as Mariano Rajoy of the centre-right People’s Party (PP)”. Asking how Spain's new leader will choose to wield such power, The Economist noted that Mr Rajoy is dogged, having managed to overcome the PP’s internal infighting during seven years in opposition but he is “neither especially combative nor given to dramatic gestures”.

However, The Economist said, if Mr Rajoy does decide to get serious, he will be hard to stop. “With backing from like-minded reformists in the Catalan nationalist Convergence and Union coalition and in the Basque Nationalist Party, he can claim support from MPs representing nearly half the Spanish electorate. And trade unions, who have blocked meaningful labour reform until now, have much less bargaining power than they have had in the past, even if they threaten a general strike.”

STAYING!

There is a malicious rumour apparently going round that The news is about to shuffle off its mortal coil and stop trading or that we are being taken over by another paper. This is, of course, absolute rubbish and the fact is that on Friday this week we are having to move into larger premises to keep up with all the work we have. We will also be expanding by another eight pages, making 40 pages which is still a readable amount and will be distributing another 10,000 copies – hardly the news from a paper that’s supposed to be going under or being taken over. Whenever we change the style of The news, within a matter of a couple of weeks we have been copied, which tells us that we are great on design, and stories that appear in The news are very often repeated by our rivals, sometimes up to two weeks later! We know we are good at what we do. How do we know? Because our readers are constantly telling us that we are the paper that they can’t wait to pick up every week, and what’s more, The news is read from cover to cover. We know that some people find it difficult to find a copy by Friday morning and that is because we have virtually no returns on our paper. Every copy is picked up and taken home with people or are in establishments such as cafés where each copy is read by multiple people, and that is why we are expanding. So, as you can see, there will be even more to enjoy in The news next year and let’s hope this puts paid to the daft things that certain salespeople are saying! We shall see.

Caja offers cheap rentals La Caixa has launched a campaign to rent 3,000 apartments for between €170 and €300 a month, including IBI, aimed at families who have had their income vastly reduced by the economic crisis and are having difficulties finding somewhere to live. La

Caixa will subsidise the rent, and the only condition is that the families must earn at least €6,000 a month. The process has already begun in Tarragona province in Catalonia and will be extended to Seville in the near future.

Turning lava into cash

e Franco family millions

The residents of La Restinga, the town most affected by the thousands of tremors and eruptions of the underwater volcano that have been threatening El Hierro – the smallest Canary island – for months now, are making hay while the lava bubbles.

Franco's belief that he had “it all tied down” politically so that his regime would continue after his death was thwarted by a king bent on democracy but he definitely had the family's wealth all sorted out. Now, 36 years after his death on November 20th, 1975, an article in El Pais shows that democracy has treated the dictator's clan far better than he ever treated democracy. For example, the article reveals that until the day she died, Franco's widow Carmen Polo received a pension that was higher than the salaries of prime ministers Adolfo Suárez and Felipe González. Her only daughter and her sonin-law used their diplomatic passports until they expired in 1986. King Juan Carlos I – probably to make up for dismantling Franco's regime – even

created a new title for them: the duchy of Franco. The taxmen never investigated their accounts, they were not forced into exile, nor was their fortune seized, as happened in the case of Dominican dictator Leónidas Trujillo after his assassination in 1961. None of the assets Franco had received as a head of state – which in good faith should have reverted to the state after his death – were ever claimed by the country's new rulers. And unlike the descendants of Chilean dictator Augustin Pinochet, who were prosecuted for misappropriation of funds in 2007, nobody ever

www.thenewsonline.es

bothered the Francos, not even when they flirted with the extreme right or led public acts of nostalgia every November 20th. His grandchildren have shown little of the business sense of their mother – Franco's only daughter Carmen who is the head of a major realestate empire. But since the property boom went bust, the younger Francos have been selling off their assets to keep up with their own lifestyle. Franco's son-in-law, the Marquis of Villaverde, described it well in 1989: "A time comes when a cow stops giving milk, and you have to eat the cow."

They're selling lumps of it – called restingolitas – for between €20 and €400 both on the ground and on the internet. To attract the tourists, one bar runs an advert saying “come to eat at Casa Juan and get a piece of the volcano”. It's the light-hearted side of a situation that looked as if it would end with the island

sinking into the sea. However, the experts have detected a drop in the number of daily tremors caused by a volcano 17 kilometres under the sea but only three kilometres

off the coast of the island. That's good news for people who have lived through more than 11,600 tremors and small quakes since July 17th.

Happy despite the crisis Two out of every three Spaniards claim to have been happy this year, despite the crisis, according to the 2011 Study of Happiness carried out by the Instituto Coca-Cola de la Felicidad. In fact, one in every three said this year had been “good” or “very good”. Women are happier than men and young people are happier than old people. The happiest

people live in Asturias, La Rioja and Navarre and the unhappiest in Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla-Leon and the Basque Country. The people who have given the Spanish the most happiness include footballer Leo Messi, tennis ace Rafael Nadal, Colombian singer Shakira, the Duchess of Alba, FI driver Fernando Alonso and actress Penelope Cruz.

Healthcare in crisis The director general of the pharmaceutical industry association, Farmaindustria, has said regional governments owe suppliers of prescription drugs, medical technology and other products to public hospitals more than €10 billion and that the companies cannot continue financing public health.

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to cope with the laws and regulations in Spain? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually within 48 hrs? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of 4000 Euros, would this amount be readily available? Could you cope with these issues at an emotional and stressful time? King has 'little accident' King Juan Carlos ended up with a black eye after being hit by a door in the Zarzuela Palace on Tuesday morning. The king went to open the door, not realising that an aide was opening it from the other side. Palace officials made light of the

incident and the King carried out all functions – receiving the credentials of five new ambassadors in the morning and attending the 8th Fund for the of Nature Protection (Fondena) awards ceremony at the Higher Council of Scientific Research in the afternoon.

Humberto Arnes said suppliers in most regions have to wait more than a year for payment and nearly two years in Andalucia, Murcia and Valencia. He said this situation cannot continue: “The regional governments cannot expect the companies to keep keep supplying the regions indefinitely. This could put their companies at risk but at the same time this also puts at risk patients with chronic diseases. Some firms might have to fold and this could cause problems in the way prescription drugs are dispensed."

Daylight all night The public lighting system in Spain consumes three times as much electricity as Germany’s system, according to the Fenosa Natural Gas Foundation. Its president, Pedro Fabregas, told a conference last week that this was because Spain uses energy less efficiently. He said the use of energy saving light bulbs would cut the consumption of electricity by up to 80 per cent. He said Spaniards want to replicate the country’s intense daylight at night, unlike Germans who are used to a gentler daylight.

'Cash for big families' plan President Mahinda rajapaksa has announced that any police officer parenting a third child will be given a one-off cash grant of 100,000 Sri lankan rupees (£580). He said that the police and the rest of the security forces deserved it for having fostered democracy, development and social reconciliation. Sri lanka has a relatively low fertility rate of less than two children per woman. One police officer said he would not be having a third child: "You can't bring a child up on 100,000 rupees."

As a result of growing concerns over Iran's nuclear programme, the US, UK and Canada have announced new sanctions. At a press conference in Washington on Monday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke of a "significant ratcheting-up of pressure" and said Iran's petrochemical industry, oil and gas industry and financial sector would be targeted by the sanctions. The US also named Iran a "primary money laundering concern" and

www.thenewsonline.es

announced that it was banning exports for the petrochemical, oil and gas industries. A report by the UN's nuclear watchdog (IAEA) has given the strongest evidence yet that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons. It said Iran had carried out tests "relevant to the development of a nuclear

device". Tehran insists its nuclear programme is solely for civilian purposes. Iran's deputy oil minister Abdolhossein Bayat (above) said the new sanctions would not stop Iran exporting petrochemicals to the European Union where, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency, it has an 11% share of the market.

Bradley Manning, the US army analyst suspected of leaking government secrets, will face a military court on 16th december. He is accused of obtaining and distributing government secrets, which he allegedly leaked to the antisecrecy website, and also of

The Brazilian Environmental Protection Agency, Ibama, announced on Monday that it is fining US oil company Chevron $28m (£17.9m) for causing aUStralia an oil spill 74 miles off the coast of Rio de Janeiro on November 9th. Shampoo bottle drug mix-up Chevron has accepted responsibility for the spill, saying it had underestimated the pressure of underwater oil deposits while drilling. and the company estimates that the equivalent of around 18 barrels of oil remain to be cleaned up. Brazilian Environment Minister Izabella Teixeira said Chevron could face further fines if an investigation

revealed more infractions. According to Brazil's National Petroleum Agency (ANP), the leak released between 200 and 330 barrels a day at the height of the spill. ANP head Haroldo Lima said the accident was "serious,

but not major". He said there was "no comparison" between this spill and last year's disaster at BP's Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, where 11 people died and some 3,000 barrels a day were leaked.

neil Parry has been paid compensation of aUS$100,000 (£63,000) after being wrongly accused of smuggling ecstasy in shampoo bottles. after spending three days in jail after being arrested at darwin airport last year, the bottles were found to contain shampoo and conditioner, not 1.6kg of liquid ecstasy as alleged. Mr Parry said the payout "was not worth it". after a 17month legal battle with the australian Customs and Border Protection Service, he said most of the compensation would go towards his legal costs.

Khmer Rouge trio go on trial The trial of the three most senior surviving leaders of Cambodia's genocidal Khmer Rouge regime began on Monday in Phnom Penh. Nuon Chea, who was the right-hand man of supreme leader Pol Pot, former headof-state Khieu Samphan and former foreign minister Ieng Sary, now all in their eighties, face charges including genocide and crimes against humanity. Pol Pot died in 1998 before facing a full trial for his crimes. The regime attempted to create an ideal communist society by

forcing city residents to work as peasants in the countryside, and by purging intellectuals, middle class people and any supposed enemies of the state. Some 1.7 million people – about one-third of the population – are believed to have been murdered, or died of overwork, starvation or torture from 1975 to 1979. Cambodia originally asked the United Nations and the

international community to help set up a tribunal into the genocide in the mid1990s. A joint tribunal was finally established in 2006 but to date only Kaing Guek Eav has been convicted. He was head of the notorious Tuol Sleng prison – a torture facility located in a school building – where he presided over the torture and murder of thousands of people.

Philip Morris sues Australia Tobacco giant Philip Morris is suing the Australian government over a new law making plain packaging mandatory for cigarettes from December 2012. Under the law, all tobacco will have to be sold in plain olive-brown packets with graphic health warnings. The government has described the law as "one of the most momentous

public health measures in Australia's history" but Philip Morris Asia (PMA) said it breached a bilateral investment treaty. It said it had served a notice of arbitration under Australia's Bilateral Investment Treaty with Hong Kong. PMA is arguing that removing its trademarks from tobacco packaging will cut its profits and see fake brands flood

the market. PMA said it will seek compensation for the billions of dollars it said the new law would cost the company. Health minister Nicola Roxon said: "We know that packaging remains one of the last powerful marketing tools for tobacco companies to recruit new smokers to their deadly products."

Major tour operator Thomas Cook announced on Tuesday that they were “talking to banks” amount the amount of debt the company is in. And on Sunday of this week they had announced that they would be closing around 200 of their travel agencies following its failure in the UK to keep pace with their German and Scandinavian counterparts within the group. The company recently merged with the Co-op Travel Agency’s UK High Street shops making them the largest travel agency in the UK with over 1200 outlets and 2nd largest in Europe after TUI. The official announcement of the closures is expected to come on Thursday when they will also present their

teens

Two men, aged 27 and 40-years-old from nearby St Albans, along with two others, have been arrested in connection with the death and are helping police with their enquiries.

CBI boss John Cridland has been appealing to company bosses to give teenagers a chance at a job. He said that the UK is in danger of creating a whole generation of “scarred” people because they cannot get a job and has urged the Government to step in with grants to help employers take the step of employing someone who may have no qualifications.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Ross from the Bedordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit said that they believe that Mr Miah had not died where he was found and that his death was linked to other incidents in the town on Friday evening in the areas of Ferrers Lane and Newgate Close, along with another incident involving three men in nearby Spenser Street, St Albans. Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.

He has suggested that a grant in the region of around £1500 should encourage the companies to employ the youngsters and that many more apprenticeship schemes should be set up.

IN BRIEF The Leveson inquiry into the phone

SOUTH

Staycations Holiday company Cottages 4 U have reported a massive rise in the business of so called “staycations”. These are holidays for people who want to stay in their own country and not bother with ports and aiports and will happily drive for hours to get to their destinations instead. Top of the list are Devon and Cornwall with most people taking a staycation coming from Southampton. UK

Philip Having a reputation as the Royal Family’s most outspoken member, Prince Philip was at it again over the weekend. He announced that he didn’t like the new energy producing windmills, thought they were a waste of money and wouldn’t give them houseroom. Britain’s new windfarms are actually costing each household £90 a year, cost huge amounts of money to install and will never provide the amount of electricity the UK needs. And for once the people are agreeing with him by posting messages on Facebook and Twitter.

hacking scandal started this week The much awaited inquiry into the recent phone hackings carried out by national newspapers got underway on Monday and is being played out live on Sky News on TV. First to give evidence and report their feelings were the parents of murdered teenage Milly Dowler. Sally and Bob Dowler told the inquiry that while Milly was still missing the News of the World had hired private detective Glen Mulcaire to intrude on their panicked state. They said that they had been made to believe that Milly was still alive as messages to her mobile phone were being deleted and they believed that it could only be Milly doing it. This is something Mulcaire denies. They have said that they had retraced the steps they knew Milly would have taken and found that reporters, newspaper together with photographers were already there and the only way they could possible have known what they were going to do was if they had hacked into their private phone line at home. The Dowlers said the

actions of the press had added greatly to their grief. Hugh Grant also spoke to the inquiry on Monday and whilst being questioned by the representative of the News of the World used cricketing terms for the way in which he was being questioned. It appeared that the always polite Mr Grant came very close to losing his cool at one point while insisting that most of what had been published about him was utter rubbish. And on Tuesday actor and comedian Steve Coogan has described how reporters would rifle through his bins, attempt to trick family members and offer his friends money to get information about him. Coogan told the Leveson Inquiry into media standards that he had never said he was a "paragon of virtue" and not "sought" fame. "I have never wanted to be famous, as such fame is a by-product," Coogan told the inquiry. "Me, myself, personally, I like to keep myself private."

The theft of drugs from an allegedly secure warehouse in Malaga port 10 days ago has brought to light a number of deficiencies in the process leading to the destruction of drugs seized by the police and the Guardia Civil. The warehouse is supposed to be the drug hauls' final destination before destruction but because of the huge amounts seized, it is estimated that more than 20,000 kilos are currently stored in police stations and Guardia Civil barracks

across the province. Some of these buildings have special storage areas for drugs but often the drugs are stored in cells, cupboards, offices and even in inner patios. One of the problems is that Malaga in recent years has become one of the

provinces preferred by the traffickers for introducing their wares into Europe and the special storage areas have been unable to cope with the flow. Meanwhile, judges across the province have said they are not responsible for the delays in destroying

the drugs, which cannot be done without a judicial permit. Now judges, police and Guardia Civil are demanding better procedures and more means for analysing and destroying the drugs seized to avoid a repeat of the Malaga port theft.

Pet owners fined for brawl Two women have each been ordered to pay a fine of €150 after fighting over their pets. The incident took place in Guaro when one of the women let her three dogs off the leash. They attacked the second woman's cat, which landed her with a big vet's bill. They reported each other to the police and a judge ordered them to pay a fine of €150 each. He also ordered the dog owner to pay compensation of €500 and the cat owner €300 for the wounds they inflicted on each other during the brawl. The dog owner was also ordered to pay the vet's bill. They appealed the sentence and the second judge absolved them from paying compensation to each other. However, the judge took the opportunity to reprimand the two women – “civilised, education and rational human beings” – for losing control and attacking each other.

Wettest month in a decade The seven rainy days in the first 20 days of this month make it the wettest November in a decade and the State Meterological agency (aemet) has said Malaga may have more rainy days before the end of the month. Bank manager forced to open safe Thieves kidnapped the manager of a branch of the Santander bank in the andalucian capital at gunpoint as he was leaving home at 7 am on Tuesday morning, took him to the bank and forced him to open the safe. Police said the manager had apparently been under surveillance by the gang for several days and that one group carried out the kidnapping while another waited for them at the bank. Bank sources said they got away with around €60,000. Malaga

Oil recycling falls short The residents of the capital have yet to learn to use the city’s159 oil recycling containers and are still pouring nine out of every ten litres of used cooking oil down the drain. This oil eventually finds its way to the sea where it is largely responsible for the scum that turns off holidaymakers. a council spokesman said the recycled oil is used to make soap, fertilizer, lubricants, paints and especially biofuel. He said another awareness-raising campaign was obviously needed.

Votes For Expatriate Brits? Where are we at? A review. So, is there a plan? Like so many adventures in life, you put your foot forward and a journey begins, the destination is unknown. There are distant lights of a city on the horizon but you have little idea what adventures lie on the way or what greets you at the summit. So it is with the website www.votes-forexpat-brits.com. Some have criticised the team behind this site for not raising a campaign on the government sponsored e-petitions site. There are two very pertinent reasons why not. The first is the huge backing that is needed via the popular press and a UK-based movement to get people to sign. If only we could get the support of The Sun or The Mail! To get any real pressure you would need huge numbers to get anywhere, preferably 100,000! The second and more important reason is that the e-petition site has no opportunity to place comments. Comments on the expat votes website could prove to be a most valuable store of ammunition. I’d like geography campaign.

explore the of this

1. Parliament is the key to everything. We have to light a fuse and at some point feed in the ammunition. We have seen in parliament some discussion on how the lists of electors should be assembled. In Britain up to now, the head of each household has been required to fill in, each autumn, a list of electors in that household. The government has observed that this leads to fraud. It is suspected that there is a good deal of voting fraud at election time, so the government wishes to introduce a different procedure of individual registration to vote. There is also discussion on the reorganisation of electoral boundaries and the number of MPs. A bill or bills would have to be discussed in parliament to make any changes. This is a fuse to light. 2. These parliamentary processes expose chinks by which one might introduce a clause on the voting processes of expatriate electors. Expatriate electors need to register for a

constituency – but which? Some expatriates have never had allegiance to any UK-based constituency, or it is so nebulous and changing that is has no value. But British electors they want to be! Some ammunition is already prepared. 3. At this very same moment in history, two law cases are in process of being considered and in both cases judgements are expected shortly – that of James Preston, resident in Spain and that of Harry Shindler, resident in Italy. 4. Further there are in other movements countries for expatriates to be represented at home (e.g. Egypt– Malaysia). Very many countries already have such provision. e.g. Tunisia, Morocco, and many European countries. 5. The person responsible for introducing any bill to parliament is Mark Harper, MP for the Forest of Dean, and also Minister for Political and Constitutional Reform.

6. NOW is the time to influence Mark Harper MP – House of Commons, SW1A0AA,www.parliament. uk/biographies/markharper/31687 for at this time, one assumes, a bill is being constructed! 7. Then, when we know that the bill is drafted and as long as it contains some clause useful to our cause, then we need somehow to inform the bulk of the MPs of the world-wide feelings of the lack of representation. They need to read the comments which the votes site has accumulated. How to do that is a difficulty. Postage costs are enormous. It may be possible to send a resumé to each MP by email and somehow place a fuller compendium in the House of Commons Library. 8. As to the clause in the bill. Here is a quandary. [see 2. above] a) It could just say that the 15 year cutoff is abolished. That would be some progress, but in my view is not enough. And b) It would be helpful to follow the

leads of France and Italy and Portugal. In these states the expatriate is represented by someone with the interests of the expatriate at heart. In short, there should at least be one MP elected by the expatriates. Since the British expatriate is, at present, so slow in coming forward, there may not be enough people to register for voting in the whole of Europe, let alone the world, for more than one MP. However, I suspect that if the principle is established, the demand for representation would escalate. This second alternative removes some objections from those MPs and others with insular perspectives i.e. that the vote granted to 5 million expatriates could swamp the existing UK-based voters. One, two, or even three expatriate MPs could not possibly swamp the opinions of the House. But they could certainly express the feelings of the expatriates. 9. The situation in Europe is special. I have correspondence from the office of the Vice President

of the European Commission (Viviane Reding) which displays unease at the nonrepresentation of expatriates of the countries of Britain, Greece, and Ireland – the only three EU nations to give no representation at all to their citizens resident in other countries of the EU. 10. What the individual can do at this time. a. Express your views on voting and constituencies to Mark Harper b. Spread this mail to other British expatriates. c. Get others to add their names and comments to http://votes-for-expatbrits.com/Sign-up-Poll.php Written by Brian Cave, organiser of www.pensionersdebout. blogspot.com/

What a shocker

I

t was the best of times, it was the worst of times…

The best …for Mariano Rajoy, who enjoyed the delights of victory after having swallowed bitter defeats in 2004 and 2008. And it was quite a victory. The Partido Popular got 186 seats, its best win yet – three more than Jose Maria Aznar got in 2000 but 16 less than Felipe González got in 1982.

W

hy Rajoy should be so happy about winning I don’t know, because he has the Herculean task ahead of turning the country’s economic situation around, at a time when it looks as if the whole world is heading for recession. One tidbit of heartening news is that Angela Merkel – she who is accused of realising Hitler’s dream of dominating Europe – is on his side. Rajoy rang her and she is reported to have given him her full support during their 20-minute conversation on Monday morning. She never trusted Zapatero and the odds are heavily stacked against you if La Merkel doesn’t like you. Rajoy is currently trying to get the Socialists to allow him to take over as soon as possible, instead of waiting until December 22nd for the swearing in of the new government.

The worst …for Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. He stood alone as he acknowledged his crushing defeat on Sunday night, without any of the members of the Zapatero government, party luminaries or even the people who planned his election campaign standing by him for support. Top marks for courage. Monday morning, when the party heavies turned up for an executive committee meeting, they rushed passed the waiting press, refusing to say anything, although Defence minister Carme Chacon muttered something about having to do some hard thinking. It will take a lot more than some hard thinking to save the party, which got only 110 seats – its worst performance since free elections began in 1977. Zapatero is apparently already trying to stop Rubalcaba from taking over the party – he wants one of his lightweight protégés to be the next secretary general. But right now the party needs its three heavyweights – Rubalcaba, former PM

Winning back the masses Felipe González and former speaker Jose Bono – if it is to be saved. If the lightweights take over then the Socialist Party can expect to spend a lot of time in opposition. But more on that further down the line.

A poisoned chalice

R

ajoy can be thankful he has an outright majority because in the next parliamentary session he will have to deal with United Left leader Cayo Lara. Izquierda Unida (IU) picked up a lot of discontented votes from disillusioned Socialists and won 11 seats, up from one in 2008. He says the party will be “the ordinary people’s voice” in Parliament but he won’t be able to resist pushing the IU’s dream of abolishing the Monarchy and bringing in the Third Republic. That’s why the IU has been so assiduously keeping alive the worst memories of the Franco regime – with a lot of covert help from Zapatero – in the past eight years. No matter that around 70 per cent of Spaniards are happy with their parliamentary monarchy – this reincarnation of old Joe Stalin knows what’s good for them better than they do.

A ray of real hope

R

osa Diez’s Union, Progress and Democracy (UDP) party got 1,140,242 votes – up from just over 330,000 last time around. However, thanks to Spain’s crazy electoral system she only gets five seats in parliament whereas the newly formed pro-independence Basque party Amaiur got seven seats for only 333,628 votes. The system favours local regional parties over those with nationwide coverage like UPD and that’s one of the pet bees in Diez’s bonnet. She has already said she will go all out for electoral reform and I suspect the PP will support her. One of Zapatero’s main weaknesses was that he didn’t get an absolute majority in 2004 or 2008 and had to ally himself with pro-independence Basque and Catalan nationalist parties who don’t have the nation’s interests at heart. So he ended up governing for a hodge-podge of minorities and now his party is paying the price. Opinion polls in the past few years have shown that a majority of Spaniards want the power of the regional parties curtailed so the sooner they stay home in their own regions the better. Right on, Rosa, just you show 'em!

E

I

s it possible that the PSOE can rebuild itself after Sunday night’s devastating loss at the polls? It is going to take some time as well as some good-old fashion house cleaning, but giving a new breath of life to an archaic Socialist Party is not by any means out of the question. The trouncing by Mariano Rajoy’s Partido Popular was the worst defeat for the Socialists since the Transition. Throughout the different elections held since 1977, the PSOE had always made gradual gains in Parliament, improving the number of seats as the electoral years went by. This time, however, voters punished the ruling party by taking 59 seats from the PSOE and handing them over to the PP and minor parties. Andalucia was the hardest hit, where the Socialists lost all provinces except for one. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and his party pretty much knew that they were going to perform poorly at the polls, but they didn’t expect such a bashing. "I think all Spaniards know that we were up against hurricane-force winds in these elections," outgoing Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero said on Monday. Those cyclones came in the form of high unemployment, a continental-wide debt crisis, a worsening economic situation, and loss of market credibility.

I

n February, the Socialists will hold their party convention to elect a new leader. No candidates so far have come forward to say that they want the job of secretary general. Rubalcaba and Defence minister Carme Chacón, who just a few weeks ago said they would like to go after the post, appear to have backed down for now following Sunday’s electoral catastrophe. Basque regional premier Patxi López, who was also once considered to take over the reins from Zapatero, has decided not to seek the job but instead continue to serve out his term, according to his party aides. It seems like no one is willing to touch that poison at this point.

M

adrid Socialist Party leader Tomás Gómez has called on his party to come up with plans to encourage all the Socialists come out and vote during next February’s convention. Gómez is also said to want to assume the party leadership – but he too hasn’t said a word. There are calls being generated from the inside for Rubalcaba to continue leading the party as it prepares to assume the role of the country’s major opposition force. Among them, Rubalcaba’s former

campaign manager Elena Valenciano and Rafael Simancas, an MP representing Madrid.

B

ut before the name-dropping begins, there must be sufficient time for the Socialists to gather their thoughts and reflect on what went wrong. For years, we had been hearing the trade unions complain that Zapatero’s Socialists had abandoned their roots by cutting pensions and public workers’ salaries, and imposing a job reform that neither labour nor big business liked. The unions, in the past, had always delivered tens of of thousands of its members to the Socialists on election day; this year the UGT and CCOO were very quiet.

T

hen you had the group of artists, intellectuals, actors, and literary people who formed their loose coalition during the 2008 elections, calling themselves “de la ceja” or “of the eyebrow,” in reference to Zapatero’s striking eyebrows. They came out in full support for the prime minister’s reelection bid but as the economic situation deteriorated they grew disgusted, including with the “ceja” name. The personalities who made up this platform re-emerged during the past campaign asking voters to cast their ballots for the United Left (IU) coalition, which garnered 10 more seats from the one it had in the lower chamber. The strategy worked and the Socialists again were abandoned by another important sector of voters.

T

he Socialists have a lot of work ahead of them. Besides coming up with a strong opposition strategy that will ensure there will be no cuts in social services, as the PP is planning, they will have to put the election trauma behind them and begin to work for the country. One idea would be to bring fresh, younger faces to the PSOE. Most of the individuals who make up today’s leadership are too connected to Zapatero and in some cases go back to Felipe González’s time. If there are some strong moves to rejuvenate the PSOE and even adopt some of the 15-M movement’s recommendations for greater transparency and citizen participation, the party that was founded more than a century and a quarter ago by Pablo Iglesías can regain a new focus on its political life and once again become the same organisation that could easily attract the masses as it did in the 1980s.

Community News e Ark helps the children plus La Cala Lions Christmas Fayre upcoming events for Christmas The Manager of Los Delfines Guarderia, Miss Carmen, could not believe it when, after wondering how to brighten up the front of her nursery, she was approached by the IGCSE students from The Ark Christian School who offered to design and paint a mural as part of their IGCSE preparation. The art teacher Mr Andrew taught the children how to handle the project as if Miss Carmen was a potential client – by interviewing her, presenting her with prospective designs and then, after discussion, producing the finished mural. Miss Carmen said: "So many people have stopped and commented on how wonderful and bright it looks, many even asked for the name of the artist." She commented that they were amazed to

find out that it had been a project from a local school. The head of The Ark Christian School said that: "Because designing a mural had been a part of the last years IGCSE it seemed like the perfect opportunity for the student to really experience taking a project right through from conception to completion.” She was proud of the way the students handled the project and hoped that the school would have many other opportunities to help the local community. The Ark Christian School will be helping at The Ark Christmas Fayre this Saturday, 26th November, in The Ark Church Building in Las Rampas, Fuengirola, which starts at 10.30am. This will be a great event to take your children to as one of the Kings will be there

giving (free) presents to any children that come. There will also be lots of Christmas goodies, decorations, food etc. The Ark Christmas Fayre has long been known as one of the very best in the area. If you can’t make it to the Fayre, then why not join the children and many other people at the "Carols by Candlelight" in the main church square, Fuengirola on Tuesday 13th December at 8pm – a really wonderful Christmassy affair. The Ark Christian Fellowship will also be holding their annual Carol Service on Sunday 18th December at 7.30pm, at The Ark in Las Rampas, Fuengirola . Go along and have a jolly good sing-song! For more information please call 649 117 121 or 634 495 945 or email schooladmin @thearkspain.com

The La Cala Lions held their annual Christmas Fayre at the Tamisa Golf Hotel on Sunday and what a success it was!

The hotel reception, terraces and lounge areas were stuffed full of stalls where you could buy Christmas goodies, there were a couple of raffles and a tombola with some fabulous prizes and it seemed that every local person had turned up to join in the fun – despite the foul weather.

The event was opened by Lions’ President Rosalyn Rowley and a cheque was presented to Marjorie Taylor, President of the Royal British Legion, Calahonda Branch for the Poppy Appeal. Displays from Tae-Kwan-Do Champion Kieran Taylor and La Cala Fencing Club followed, plus one by the Costa All-Star Cheerleaders combining dance with gymnastics. The cake stall run by the ladies was loaded with everything from cup cakes to carrot cake, rock cakes to rocky road cakes. Raffle prizes included a stay for two at the hotel, a luxurious Christmas

The afternoon was rounded off with the Tapas English Choir singing a medley of carols to get everyone in the mood for the festive season.

Difficult Words - OWN

The latest "problem" word we came accross in class was "own" If you want to talk about owning something it is best to use the verb:

Pertenecer - belong to. Who owns this piece of land? - ¿A quién pertenece esta parcela? I own the car (The car belongs to me) - Me pertenece el coche. If you want to say it is one's own.... use propio/a Es mi propio dinero - It's my own money En su propia casa - In his own house

If you want to say it is my own fault - Es culpa mía It's your own fault - Es culpa tuya It's his/her own fault - Es culpa suya Then you may come across a situation where you want to say you are doing something for reasons of your own, you can say: " Lo hago por razones personales" To get one's own back is vengarse. Voy a vengarme por lo que me ha hecho - I'm going to get back at him for what he did to me. To do something on one's own : Hacerle uno solo Lo hice yo solo - I did it on my own Lo hizo él solo - He did it on his own Tienes que aprender a hacerlo tú solo - You have to learn to do it on your own. And in the unlikely event of your making a mistake you can own up by saying Reconozco mi error - I own up to my mistake. Hasta la próxima - Until next time.

CHAIN animal charity shop manager, Denise Walker was walking her dogs in the campo when one of them became very interested in an uncovered service manhole. Closer inspection revealed a goat trapped down the hole. Having no rope or any means of getting the goat out of the deep hole reinforcements were called and arrived in the shape of fellow CHAIN volunteer Denise and her husband Bill both from Cat and Dog World Kennels. Bill made short work of hauling the goat out but it had broken its hind leg in the fall. The

goat was transported to safety and eventually had its leg pinned and is at present recuperating from its ordeal. Thanks are extended to Jill from ARCH for helping with all the necessary paperwork. In December CHAIN will run a "Name that goat competition" at the shop in La Trocha and all proceeds will go towards the goat's treatment.

Walk for charity A perfect autumn Marbella day was the setting for the Rotary Club MarbellaGuadalmina’s first annual charity walk. This event was also held to honour the memory of Julia Mulgrew, a founding member of the club, who sadly passed away recently. Thirty-two keen walkers had a choice of various routes, ranging from a delightful scenic walk on even ground to a climb that was definitely not for the faint hearted! The walkers

finished, elated that they had completed their task, which was to raise money for local charities. The grand total raised was over €3000 which was deemed by all involved to be a great success. Mr Paul Church President of Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina, said that he was thrilled with the organisation of the day and that this will definitely become an annual event that will surely go from strength to strength.

Arts and Crafts Christmas Cracker! A festive Christmas Market is being held at the Waterfront, Queensway Quay, on Tuesday 6th December 2011 from 5.00pm. Gibraltar Arts and Crafts Association (first floor Casemates) will be participating in this event, which will raise money for GBC Open Day and for the

Wobbles children’s charity. They have a range of unique, beautifully hand crafted items for sale. The photo shows Arts and Crafts members, Sabrina, Lili and their children modelling some of the lovely and very reasonably priced articles which will be on display; hand-made cuddly toys,

jewellery, knitted baby clothes, hats, bags, cards and a wealth of other craft items. Food, drink, entertainment and Father Christmas will be there. In previous years this event has been very enjoyable with a great party atmosphere. Everyone can buy mass produced items

The later finish is intended to make it easier for people working during the day and families with school age children to enjoy more of the event. Along with some new features, such as the Saxophone Quartet from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band playing through the afternoon in the cloister, the fair retains the traditional format and elements which have made it so popular. There will be over 40 seasonal stalls – many of them run by local charities as part of their own fund-raising efforts – selling a wide range of Christmas goodies, plants, cards and gifts. Refreshments are being served in the King’s Chapel Music Room throughout the afternoon, with a

selection of sweet and savoury food. As usual the cloister will be the setting for some traditional favourites, including Santa’s Grotto from 2-5.30 pm, once again kindly run by the Round Table. And the Gibraltar Red Cross will sell mince pies and mulled wine from 5pm, accompanied by carols from the St Anne’s School choir at 5.30 pm. The fair will conclude with draws for the motorcycle and Xmas raffles at 6.30pm in the ballroom. Delivering the motorbike to the Convent today, Gareth Gomez from the Bassadone Automotive Group said “It’s good to give back to the community, so we’re really pleased to be able to support the Convent Christmas Fair and local charities in this way.” Receiving the bike on behalf of the organising committee, Lady Johns said

“We’re delighted to be able to hold two exciting raffles again, as these proved very popular last year. Bassadone Motors have very kindly donated a motor bike again this year and we have a large number of exciting prizes for our Xmas raffle including a mobile phone, vouchers and many other prizes.” “We are really grateful to all our sponsors who have given so generously again this year and would like to express our thanks to them all for their generosity which enables us to support to our chosen local charities: The Gibraltar Clubhouse Project, The Gibraltar Community and The Association Gibraltar Regiment Benevolent Fund.” “After

"Take a Chance On Us' was formed in 2008 for a summer contract in anticipation of the hugely popular Mamma Mia film. It was decided that the excellent feedback and efforts were worthy of continuing with the act and led to a constant stream of bookings along the coast and is more popular than ever now – appealing to a new generation of Abba fans following the popularity of the film. 'Take a Chance On Us' has performed at a wide variety of private and public venues on the Costa del Sol and this year they even took the show to the UK for a string of gigs. 'Take a Chance On Us' has also performed at a number of charity events and fundraisers as the feel good music and flamboyant

costumes of Abba are always guaranteed to get the party started and create an enthusiastic audience. 'Take a Chance On Us' has no doubts that the fantastic music of Abba will never die and will continue to create future generations of fans. The group consists of four members of the band, Amelinde sings Anni Frid, Rhiannon sings Agnetha, Warren is backing vocals and guitar, Steve is backing vocals and key board. Fabulous songs include Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Money Money Money, Summer Night City, Waterloo, Knowing me Knowing you and Voulez Vous etc so come and dance the night away at the Salon Varietes Theatre with this amazing group. Call The Salon Varietes box office on 952 474 542 to book your tickets or call in at Woody’s in Los Boliches to get them. See their advert on page 18.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn - part one By Bill Condon Starring: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner And so it heads towards the final curtain - the tale about vampires, werewolves and forbidden love that has made stars of the principal actors and set teenage girls' hearts aflutter. Like Harry Potter, the studio have decided to separate the final book into two movies - and fans will have to wait till November 2012 to enjoy the final moments of the Stephanie Myer saga. It's the fourth film based on Myer's books and will undoubtedly be a

huge hit at the box office. Bella, a mere mortal (Stewart) has chosen vampire Edward (Pattinson) over werewolf Jacob (Lautner). The young couple tie the knot and head off for a romantic honeymoon and Bella discovers that she is pregnant with a halfvampire baby. But her life is threatened as the baby begins to devour her from the inside and the couple leave their idyll behind and head to their hometown for

help. The fragile peace between the vampires and werewolves is under threat and Bella is in danger- but Jacob still loves her, and is determined to do all he can to protect her. Cue big and bloody CGI battles between the vamps and the wolves, accompanied by a pounding rock and pop music score. The critics have been lukewarm, and this is probably not the place for newcomers to start with the saga - it's more one for

Sweetening the Distance There are many things in this world that are truly unfair and the music business is one of them. There are so many great and talented musicians out there, but only a handful make the big money. So, unless you’re a teeny bopper willing to wear practically nothing and sell your soul for fame, you’re

never going to make it big. However, if you have good taste in music and are not easily sold on overrated pop tunes, you could be in for a treat. It’s time to shine the

spotlight on a man who has stood in the shadows of Ryan Adams and Chris Robinson (of The Black Crowes) for too long, his new solo album is due to be released any day now and it’s time people got know the name Neal Casal, just for being Neal Casal. Over the past 12 years Casal has worked with many great artists Willie Nelson, Mike Campbell, Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright and Sheryl Crow to name a few, while maintaining an acclaimed solo career and leading a superb rock band “Hazy Malaze”. One of the most impressive things about Casal is his ability to effortlessly blend into any genre of music, whether you are a fan of his acoustic Americana solo work or his rock ‘n’ roll, soul sound of “Hazy Malaze”, there is something for everyone. The long awaited

Sweeten the Distance is a tasteful selection of beautifully crafted love songs and some rather catchy toe tappers. The exceptional intricate guitar work at the start of the title song, leads you to a path that guides you on a journey through the whole album. Casal has ventured on a more folk theme for this album, his guitar work pays tribute to Nic Jones and Bert Jansch, yet still maintaining his own style. One of my favourite songs from the album is How Quite It Got, it’s one of the more rockier songs on the album, it has that Hazy Malaze-ness to it, just slightly diluted. Casal’s voice has an intense buzz in it that energises the whole song. Some of the other songs like Time and Trouble and So Many Enemies are slightly reminiscent of George

fans of the franchise. But hey, there are millions of them so the movie will make a fortune.

E

ver since “The Blair Witch Project” moviemakers have learnt that it doesn´t cost much to make a box office smash. One of the perfect examples of this would be “Paranormal Activity”. The 2007 hit was shot on a $15.000 budget, grossed $9.1 million on the opening weekend and over $193 million worldwide over the past few years. Which kind of makes you wonder, why a movie like “Tower Heist” that has a budget of $75 million and only grossed half of the budget even bothered – what do they do with the money?

A

nyhow, as the third part of “Paranormal Activity” just came out, I thought I´d refresh your memories on the previous two and tell you about the new one, and for those of you who never saw it, to convince you to go and see it.

T

Harrison and Rufus Wainwright, incorporating a great beat with some very catchy lyrics that will replay in your head hours after listing to the album. There is a romantic dreaminess in Let It All Begin, that really sweeps you away with Casal’s tender lyrics. Most of this album was recorded using vintage instruments, which gives it that unique 70s sound, that is Casal’s ultimate style. All in all, Sweeten the Distance is an amazing album that should not be overlooked. It’s about time Neal Casal’s name stood out, and with this new album, I think he’s achieved it.

he first part of “Paranormal Activity” starts with a brief text explaining that the following footage was found by the San Francisco Police Department, then the main characters are introduced – Katie and Micah. After the couple move into their new home, Micah starts to believe that the house is haunted, to make his point he begins to document their everyday life and discovers his suspicions are right – but it´s not the house, it´s Katie. Now, I personally like this one, the characters are believable, it´s a little slow, but it´s got a few jumps and some creepiness.

T

he story in second part “Paranormal Activity 2” is technically happening at the same time, if not a little before Micah starts to

document the goings on in his house with Katie. However, this story is about Katie´s sister Kristi and her family. After experiencing what they think are a series of "breakins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realise that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem. I like it, but there was only one really good jump in it, but still pretty creepy – it is in this one where you´ll first start to hear something about witchcraft and the sacrifice of the first male child, I mention this because it comes up in the third part.

T

he final part “Paranormal Activity 3” that was released a few weeks ago, ties in nicely with the first two parts. It starts with Kristi doing up the nursery in the new home and Katie drops by to leave some boxes in their basement, Kristi and her husband go through the boxes and find loads of homemade videos – basically “Paranormal Activity 3” is part two watching old video tapes. The video tapes are of Kristi and Katie back in 1988, and shows Katie befriending an invisible entity who resides in their home.

T

his last part more or less explains the how and why Katie and Kristi ended up being haunted, and there were plenty of creepy and jumpy bits in it. I loved it, especially the sheet scene. However, the ending seemed a bit confused, and after Dennis does a very impressive back crunch, it just ends. Anyway, the good news is there will not be a “Paranormal Activity 4”, looks like someone finally knew when to stop!

Any weird tension that you have been feeling will be replaced by unshakeable certainty. This is a highly productive week and something special is likely to take your breath away. Give it your all even if there are some that don’t approve of your plan. As long as you are full of certainty then that is all that matters. Miracles are happening in your world, embrace them and seize the moment. All the rules are changing, Taurus, but you may be still holding onto the memory of the old ways of doing things - the question you have to ask yourself is does your life support this old structure? Certain things are falling away so that new life can begin. Your desires are rising up and being felt by your ego - this is giving you a rare opportunity to make those new desires real in the world. An adventure is on its way. The most effective way to get your message across to those you love right now is to live by example – act and behave in the ways you would like it returned. A certain frenetic pace is starting to settle and stabilise - often at times like these when we are in the middle of a whirlwind we can easily forget what a sane existence feels like. It can take a while to relax into that feeling, but know this, Gemini, you can now afford the calm. This week you become a warrior with your thoughts, Cancer, turning them around and making them work for you, not them ruling you. You are reversing a self-defeating mental process that has been anchored in your subconscious; now watch how positively those around you respond. Liberation is yours and freedom from an age-old heartbreak - rise up and meet the mental challenge and watch the immense rewards take place. You naturally want to win, succeed and shine, any number of things lately could have tested your faith but it is the end of the road. The flames of fire within have been fanned and this has made you hungry for more, the desire in you has awoken from its deep sleep. Now is the time to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and begin again - retreating is not really in the equation now. So shoulders back and give it go. You are in control of your own chariot, Virgo, which means you can take the reins and choose where you want to go. Only because you make sure you are prepared for any eventuality you also have a compass on board. Certain things will seem effortless to you and so they should be, the struggle is long gone and things just slot into place. There are wild opportunities for progress in all areas of your life.

The greater the investment, Libra, the greater the return and this is what you have to bear in mind this week. You may be used to holding back when it comes to delivering sensitive information, and your intentions are probably noble, but this route may need a review as it could be creating obstacles and September 23rd - causing delays for no reason. Do not allow your fears to stop you from forging ahead. October 22nd

It is time to act, change and leave some unwanted baggage in the past where it belongs. No matter what has come up or gone down, it is about to get a whole lot better. Just about anything is possible now that Pluto your ruling planet has joined forces with Jupiter the planet of abundance and expansion. This is the real deal, nothing more and nothing less. If you have your feet on the ground then you will soar high in the heavens.

SAGITTARIUS Perhaps it is time to get back in touch with that wild side? Follow your own

instincts and use that natural gift that you possess of trekking down and tracking what you need. Enough of the trepidation and temporary uncertainty that has held you back for so long. Embrace that free spirit of November 22nd - yours and let it shine. This is the time to ride headlong into new territory, a December 21st territory that feels like home.

CAPRICORN Relax now, Capricorn, and allow the wonderful things that have just occurred

to take place. Put the panic aside, the worries of tomorrow and enjoy today. You are the one who takes responsibility and naturally rules the roost - because you never back down or give in. Earning you way through life coupled with December 22nd - the experience of the years, no one could question your authority. It is now January 19th time to let go of the reins a little and enjoy what you have created.

Only you can figure out if something is worth the compromise or not. You are worth far more than someone is currently offering you in heart, in spirit and possibly in cash. It is all about pushing the limits of your own known capacity and raising the bar; think engagement rather than emotionally detaching yourself from the situation. Ask yourself how much this thing means to you, then all will be clear.

There is no shame in changing your mind – this week you recognise the true value of something and this causes you to reconsider a brave new idea that you came up with a while ago. You gain so much clarity and find a clear understanding of your part in a certain process and experience a very rare and special opportunity to fix something that appears to have gone wrong. Perhaps it is time for tough love?

● 113g/4oz non-soak prunes, stoned and chopped ● 283g/10 oz mixed dried fruit ● 50ml/2fl brandy or rum ● 170g/6 oz plain flour ● 1 level tsp baking powder ● 57g/2oz glace cherries ● 57g/2oz mixed peel, chopped ● 1 level tsp ground cinnamon ● 1 level tsp mixed spice ● pinch of salt

( Serves 12 )

● 57g/2oz dark Muscovado sugar ● 2 eggs, beaten ● grated zest and juice of 1 orange ● grated zest and juice of 1 lemon Glazed Fruit and Nut Topping ● 1 level tbsp low-sugar apricot jam ● 2 tbsp brandy ● 28 glace cherries ● 8 pecan nuts shelled ●12 almonds shelled

Directions 1. Put the prunes and mixed fruit in a large bowl and pour over the brandy or rum. Mix together and leave to soak for a few hours, or overnight.

4. Let the cake cool in the tin, then remove and wrap in greaseproof paper and foil. Store in a cool, dry place until you are ready to decorate it with glazed fruit and nut topping if desired.

2. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Stir in the sugar and then beat in the egg with a wooden spoon. Add the soaked fruit, together with the liquid, and the zest and juice of the orange and lemon. Mix well together. If the mixture is too stiff, you can thin it down with a little more lemon juice.

Glazed Fruit and Nut Topping: 5. Put the apricot jam and brandy in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring with a wooden spoon until well blended.

3. Spoon the cake mixture into a lined 18cm/7in square cake tin and smooth the top of the cake. Bake in the preheated oven for about 2 hours, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the cake is browning too much, cover it with some greaseproof paper while it cooks.

6. Brush a little of the apricot glaze lightly over the top of the cake. Arrange the cherries and nuts in an attractive pattern on top and then brush them with the remaining glaze. 7. When the topping is cold, tie a pretty festive ribbon around the sides of the cake and then store in a tin or airtight container in a cool place. The topping will stay fresh for several weeks.

TWENTY YEARS ON, THEY CAN STILL STRUT THEIR STUFF WITH THE BEST OF THEM

It should be an absolutely fabulous Christmas ... with one of the favourite comedy shows coming back for a special Edina Monsoon, Patsy Stone, Gran, Saffy and Bubbles are about to hit the TV screens once more in a reprise of the popular Absolutely Fabulous series of the 1990’s series. Absolutely Fabulous ran for three series and a two part special until 1996, then another two series and two part specials from 2001 to 2004. The last episode was a Comic Relief special in 2005 for the BBC. The show centres around fashion PR Edina Monsoon, her family and long-time friend Patsy Stone.

Gran, played by the now 86-yearold June Whitfield seems to be ageless and is still putting up with daughter Edina’s (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy’s (Joanna Lumley) antics. Bubbles is still as thick as ever, played superbly by the rather intelligent actress Jane Horrocks and the dowdy Saffy, Edina’s daughter played by Julia Sawalha is still wearing those specs and cardie for good measure. Joanna Lumley appears as the ever drunk Patsy , complete with skin tight black leather and that

unmistakeable blonde beehive of a hairdo, sneering into the camera at every given moment then snorting with laughter at the drop of a hat for no particular reason. Gran’s also back on full blast with her exasperation growing ten fold at the pair and then, well there is of course Bubbles. Bubbles is Edina’s sort of dog’s body who hasn’t really got much between the ears but then, when you least expect it, will come out with an absolute gem of an idea or statement.

Poor Saffy, still dressed sensibly with pulled back hair and flat shoes, must think she was born into a normal family then something must have gone drastically wrong for her to end up with this lot. Mother of three, Jennifer Saunders has revealed that she wrote the special while recently recovering from breast cancer. The show is scheduled to air over Christmas and all we have left to say is “Pass the Bolly!”

Bubbles, Saffy, Edina, Gran and Patsy

At least he departed Strictly with a bang! The roly-poly glitter ball, also known as “The Grant” and Russell Grant, astrologer extraordinaire, was voted off Strictly Come Dancing at the weekend by the general public. Despite opening the show in his usual flamboyant style by being “blasted” out of a canon. They were in the bottom two for votes – they got a low 24 points on Saturday from the judges with Bruno giving the highest score for “the pure madness” of his entrance – alongside Holly Valance and Artem Chigvinstev that came as a total surprise after Jason Donovan totally lost the plot with his steps halfway through his dance. Weeks had passed with him strutting his stuff around the dance floor with his glamorous partner

Flavia Cacace and each time he was saved by the public but, once big boxer Audley Harrison had left, it was only a matter of time. Head judge Len Goodman told Grant, 60: “I don’t care how many great dancers they have and how many series of Strictly Come Dancing there are, people will always say, ‘Do you remember when Russell Grant flew out of that cannon?’ It was an iconic number that will always be remembered. Your jive isn’t that great but, as entertainment, you’re the tops.” But the show has done him the world of good healthwise after losing 10 stone and getting into shape. Previously, at 27 stone, he struggled to walk

only do so much to keep me in, and it was an incredible way to go. Really, how could I have topped that next week? “It's taught me about friendship, love music, joy and happiness” the 61year-old added.

After making his exit, Grant said he was thrilled to have made it so far: “I’m just so happy that I got to Wembley. It’s been a struggle for me since Hallowe'en because I need a knee operation and I had to do the jive with both knees strapped up,” he said. “But I had the most brilliant time, although I didn’t realise before we got to Wembley that I’d be flying through the air on a tea tray. I was really quite scared. “The British public can

And, at the end of the day, the obvious affection the pair had for each other shone through, unlike Lulu and Brendan who were ousted a few weeks ago with Lulu clearly looking as if the whole thing had been a trial for her.

husband always does the washing up! She has worked as a hand model since she was 15 years old for companies such as Fairy Liquid, Cadbury’s chocolate and Rimmel cosmetics and has appeared on thousands of billboard and in some 250 TV advertisements. Gemma is not one to spend money on useless and expensive creams for her hands and has said that she moisturises her hands using a £1.50 almond oil, 30 times a day.

She shies away from the hidden dangers to having perfect hands such as opening the fridge doors that could lead to a nail breaking and riffling through her handbag could cause paper cuts, she says, that would ruin any photo shoot. She avoids caffeine, fat, alcohol and sugar She earns an average of £100 an hour but can get anything up to £2,500 a day as a “hand double” for celebrities including Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue and Lily Cole.

The show was broadcast live from the Wembley Arena for the first time as part of the BBC charity Children In Need’s effort this year with a record 11.4 million viewers, beating rival XFactor hands down.

Give it a rest Katie Katie Price, aka Jordan, has got herself a new job on Loose Women, the midmorning magazine show for women but the one subject she just can’t seem to keep away from is that of her divorced-for-two-years ex- husband Peter Andre. When she left the Australian singer and shacked up with a cage fighter, she had not a good word to say about him but it seems that he is one of those things she just can’t let go.

Among other subjects she spoke about were the fact that she was jet lagged after flying in from her recent holiday in New York with friends, happily single and busy watching I’m A Celebrity – Get me out Of Here. Carole Vorderman asked panelist Denise Welch how to snare a single man and Katie said that when she is in a new relationship she always buys them presents but the other panelists said

that it should be the other way round. Katie replied: “There has only ever been one person who ever did that for me, Pete. But I was married to him.” She also said that while she was in a relationship she never played around and that she was missing the company of a boyfriend at the moment. She added: “I am what I am.”

Some Cancer drug antibiotics loses US approval myths still rife

US drug regulators have rescinded approval of the breast cancer drug Avastin on the grounds that it is not effective enough to justify the risks of taking it. The drug was approved for US use in 2008 and is used to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It works by starving cancer cells of a blood supply. However, Food and Drug Administration studies have found that its sideeffects include severe high blood pressure, massive bleeding, heart attack or heart failure and tears in the stomach and intestines. Further research also showed it did not help patients live longer, a claim that UK officials have also rejected. An FDA spokesman said Avastin

will still be used to treat other kinds of cancer. Avastin had already fallen foul of health authorities in the UK and in Europe. In February 2011, the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the NHS drugs advisory body, said Avastin should not be used to treat secondary breast cancers. NICE said there was insufficient evidence that the drug prolonged life. This guidance followed a recommendation by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) that doctors only prescribe the drug in combination with the

A quarter of people wrongly believe antibiotics work on most coughs and colds, according to a Health Protection Agency (HPA). Its poll of 1,800 people in England also found one in 10 people keep leftover antibiotics – and many would self-medicate next time they got ill. Experts in immunity and infection have repeatedly pointed out that antibiotics cannot treat viruses, which cause most

respiratory tract infections. Dr Clare Gerada, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: "Antibiotics are a wonderful thing when used properly, but they are not a cure-all for every condition, and should not be seen, or used, as such.” The experts have also repeatedly warned that the misuse of antibiotics, and drug companies' failures to develop new ones, could lead to a rise in untreatable

infections. The HPA said health professionals must learn to resist demands from patients for treatments they know have little or no effect on coughs and colds. It found 97% of those questioned said that the last time they had asked their GP or nurse for an antibiotic, they were prescribed one. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said that antimicrobial resistance "is one of the most serious public health challenges that we face in the EU" and could cost at least €1.5 billion. It estimated, in 2009, that each year 25,000 Europeans die as a direct consequence of a multidrug-resistant infection.

Lisa Emeny A press release has been issued by Mijas Town Hall stating that recently the Mayor of Mijas offered P.A.D. the opportunity to relocate our shelter to a piece of land just outside Mijas village. It was, of course, our intention to discuss this proposal with our members before the matter was made public. Whilst we have to wait for the exact details of the offer to be confirmed by the Mayor there

Roy Packham Last December 6th I took out a contract for WIFI using a USB dongle from the Vodafone shop in Alhaurin. When I got home and tried it, I could not receive any signal. On 8th December, two days later, I returned to the Vodafone shop to cancel the contract, (a) because as I could not receive any signal Vodafone was unable to supply me with the required service, and (b) because under European law one has the option to cancel a contract with 15 days. The shop refused to cancel the contract and refused to accept the equipment. I telephoned Vodafone and explained the situation and was asked to send a fax giving all necessary details. Having received the fax, a person from Vodafone called me and asked me to try various things as she suggested I must be able to get a signal. As soon as I told her I was a computer engineer, she agreed that a signal could not be obtained in the area where I live and would cancel the contract. One week later I received a bank statement and noticed that Vodafone had taken 138 euro from my bank account, which I immediately cancelled. I called Vodafone and, speaking to a completely different person, carefully explained the whole situation again and asked what the 138 euro was for. After some time the person told me he could find no record of this charge and suggested I inform my bank and cancel the charge !!!! Several weeks later I received a letter from Vodafone’s lawyer asking me to pay 138 euro.

President - P.A.D. are things which can be done in the meantime. Our proposal is to obtain plans and costs which would be involved in a relocation which we can then present to our members for consideration. To that end if anyone is, or knows of, an architect who would be willing to help produce plans would they please give Lisa a call on 658 351 642. Only once we have proper plans can we get an

idea of building costs. The idea of relocating is an exciting one and the opportunity to potentially house the animals in our care in an improved environment and one which is safe from flooding is even more exciting. However, we are aware that there is much work to be done before we will even know whether it is possible to make this dream a reality.

I was also advised by a lawyer that in Spain there is a phrase called “clausula abusiva”, which in part means that consumers cannot be tied to contracts with professionals

Ringed Planets If you ask anyone about Saturn the first thing they will say is that it has rings going around it. But Saturn isn’t the only planet to have rings.

Y

Alhaurin Another telephone call to Vodafone, again having to explain the whole situation to yet another person . After a great deal of discussion, I was then asked to send a fax to explain the problem!!! To cut a long story short, I eventually sent no less than 14 faxes, the last one being sent in April of this year. In July and August I received three letters from Vodafone’s lawyers, this time a different lawyer, the last one informing me I would be taken to court if I did not pay the money within seven days. At no time had I received any facture or correspondence from Vodafone to tell me what this money was for, I just assumed it was for cancelling the contract. I went to the Consumers office (OMIC, Oficina Municipal Informacion al consumidor) and the gentleman to whom I spoke said that instead of sending faxes I should have sent registered letters but suggested that I now send a registered letter to the Head office of Vodafone fully explaining why I cancelled the contract and asking them to fully explain what this charge was for.

Stargazing

by unfair clauses. In addition he advised me to contact FACUA an independent agency based in Seville that is dedicated to the defense of the consumer against abuse by companies. I sent a registered letter to Vodafone asking why they wanted 138 euro and that I had contacted FACUA as I thought this might be a case of “clausula abusive”. One week later, Vodafone sent me a factura cancelling the contract. Should readers require fax numbers or the full address of Vodafone I have appended them below. ou might be surprised to learn that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all have a ring system circling them. That’s 50% of all the planets in our solar system that have rings, so I think it is safe to suggest that at least half of the planets in other solar systems going around other stars in the universe must also have rings.

S

aturn’s rings are by far the most spectacular and can even be seen with binoculars from Earth. They are not solid but instead are made up of billions of pieces of rock and ice that are in constant motion orbiting above Saturn’s equator. No one is really sure how they were formed but they could possibly be the debris from a moon of Saturn that broke up and scattered its remains around the planet. The rings stretch between 41,000 to 298,000 miles from Saturn’s centre but they measure only a few metres in thickness.

S

aturn was the most distant of the five planets known to the ancients. In 1610, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was the first to gaze at Saturn through a telescope. To his surprise, he saw a pair of objects on either side of the planet. He sketched them as separate spheres and wrote that Saturn appeared to be triplebodied. In 1659, Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens, using a more powerful telescope than Galileo's, proposed that it was a thin, flat ring that surrounded Saturn.

T

here are three parts to Jupiter's rings. The innermost, cloud-like ring is called the Halo Ring. The next one out is the Main Ring, which is quite narrow and thin. Beyond the Main Ring is the wispy, nearly transparent Gossamer Ring. The Gossamer Ring itself is split into two parts: the Amalthea Gossamer Ring (closer to Jupiter) and the Thebe Gossamer Ring.

T

he rings of Uranus were discovered in 1977 purely by accident when Astronomers observed Uranus passing in front of a distant star in what is known as a stellar occultation. The star seemed to blink on and off as it neared the planet and was obscured by the rings. It was not until 1986 when the Voyager 2 spacecraft approached Uranus that we discovered that Uranus has at least 11 separate ring systems.

B

ut Uranus’s rings are odd because they circle the planet above its poles running around the planet from top to bottom instead of around its equator like all the others. Rings around Uranus, I bet you can’t say that without laughing!

I

I

U

V

n 1675, Italian-born astronomer JeanDominique Cassini discovered a ‘division’ between what are now called the A and B rings. It is now known that the gravitational influences of Saturn’s moon Mimas is responsible for the Cassini Division, which is 3,000 miles wide. Two NASA space probes named after Cassini and Huygens are currently in orbit around Saturn returning spectacular images of the planet. nlike Saturn's rings, which are clearly visible from Earth even through small telescopes, Jupiter's rings are very difficult to see. So difficult in fact, that they were only discovered in 1979 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. They are made up of tiny pieces of dust and the Voyager spacecraft helped us discover where that dust comes from. Meteors striking the surface of Jupiter's small, inner moons kicks up dust that then goes into orbit around Jupiter, forming the rings.

t was another stellar occultation that was responsible for the discovery of Neptune’s rings in the mid 1980’s and were confirmed in 1989 when Voyager 2 arrived at the planet. Again Neptune’s rings are different as they are not complete rings circling the whole planet but instead are incomplete arcs. One of the rings is even braided into a ‘twisted rope’ configuration. Once again how or why they were formed is a complete mystery. oyager 1 & 2 are now continuing on out of the solar system so with all these variations occurring just in our own neighbourhood I wonder what mysterious shapes and patterns await them when they start arriving at other distant worlds. The mind boggles!

Suzuki out of MotoGP Suzuki has confirmed that it will not compete in next year's MotoGP championship for financial reasons. The Japanese factory saw lone rider Alvaro Bautista finish 13th this season but have now ended their 37year stay. The company faced economic crises as an effect of world economic recession. A statement read: "Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided to suspend temporarily its participation in MotoGP from the 2012 season. "Having an eye on returning to MotoGP in 2014, Suzuki will now focus on developing a competitive new machine." Bautista had already announced that he has joined Gresini Honda for next season as a replacement for the late Marco Simoncelli. Suzuki's withdrawal leaves just Honda, Yamaha and Ducati as manufacturers with full factory teams on the grid for 2012. Suzuki first competed in the top class of grand prix racing in 1974, and saw British legend Barry Sheene take two world championships in the 1970s.

Kenny Roberts Jr was the last Suzuki world champion, taking the 500cc title in 2000. Team Manager, Paul Denning expressed his displeasure about the withdrawal of the Suzuki team from MotoGP. The English-based Japanese team was seen fighting positively in the 2011 also season. Bautista improved a lot despite a fracture on his left femur at season start in Qatar. Denning shared his views with Motorcyclenews.com and said, “The biggest

disappointment for me is the guys on the team who are so capable and have been so loyal to Suzuki and the team. The very late timing of the decision has left a large number of the guys in a difficult position for the future.” Denning added, “I’m doing my best to help where I can in terms of looking for new opportunities and taking some of them into the Crescent Suzuki fold as well but it is a difficult situation because you do travel, work and operate as a second family.”

McLaren look to the future McLaren must not repeat the mistakes that blunted their 2011 title challenge next season, team boss Martin Whitmarsh has warned. They struggled in testing and started the season behind eventual champions Red Bull, but have now won six races. We had a slow start this year," said Whitmarsh. "By the standards of McLaren this has not been a vintage year. We have to get out of the blocks quickly and make sure we are winning races. We're optimistic." Lewis Hamilton's victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix saw McLaren chalk up their sixth win of 2011. But the Woking-based team's tally pales in comparison to the 11 wins that have taken Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull to back-to-back world titles. With relative stability in next season's regulations, McLaren are now focusing their effort on overhauling their rivals when testing begins in February. Jonathon Neal McLaren’s MD added: "Lewis and Jenson (Button) are back-toback world champions and deserve the best so that's a clear target."

US win Presidents Cup Tiger Woods earned the winning point as the United States beat the International team 19-15 to clinch the Presidents Cup in Melbourne. Woods beat Australian Aaron Baddeley 4 and 3 to give the US the 18 points they needed to retain the Cup. The US led 13-9 going into the singles and lost the first four matches, but on a tense afternoon Woods sealed victory. "It feels good," said Woods. "I hoped it wouldn't come down to my point." Woods's victory was a repeat of 2009, when he hit the winning putt against South Korea's YE Yang at San Francisco to hand the United States their sixth Cup. "I played well all week, but unfortunately didn't make any putts in the first four matches," said Woods, who earned two points out of a possible five. "Today was a different deal – they poured right in." US captain Fred Couples,

Couples was criticised in some corners for picking Woods, who had fallen out of the top 50 for the first time in 15 years and had gone two years without winning. Even the International team captain, Greg Norman, said he would have taken PGA champion Keegan Bradley. So perhaps it was only fitting that it was Woods who blasted out of a deep bunker on the 15th hole to within two feet to put away Aaron Baddeley and give the Americans the point they needed to win the Presidents Cup. Indeed, Beckham was almost afforded a dream conclusion when seeing Hall pull off a fine save to prevent his free-kick from sneaking in in injury time. However, the midfielder and his team-mates celebrated deliriously when the final whistle blew.

Sports Malaga return to winning ways Racing 1 - 3 Malaga Malaga, looking to move into 5th place in the league started with their customary shaky start and with their defence looking a mess. In the 15th minute Seba Fernandez went close with a shot from outside the box. After 25 minutes Seba went on a good run and his cross found Rondon who slid the ball just past the wrong side of the post. Five minutes later a good spell of pressure from Malaga resulted in a shot from Isco going just over. On 39 minutes Racing's goalie pulled off a good save from Malaga defender Matijson, and then from the resulting corner Demichelis headed just over. The second half started as the first had ended and three minutes in Isco slotted home for Malaga from the edge of the six yard box after great work and a cross from Seba. Isco could have had a second

after a good spell of play and it was Malaga who doubled their advantage after 65 minutes when Seba put in a great cross which Matisjen headed towards goal and the ball deflected off the Racing defender into the net. Five minutes later Racing’s Arana made it 2-1 after some bad Malaga defending let him in to shoot past Caballero. Caballero then made a great save three minutes later from a header. Malaga were hanging on but on a counter attack Van Nistolrooy put in a great cross which was met by Seba who volleyed the ball in for a well deserved goal. Santi Cazola hit the post in the last minute but Malaga went home with the three 3 points and a well deserved victory. The next game is at home to Villareal on Monday at 9pm. Report by Scott Forbes

Kangaroos turn on the style to win Four Nations

World road race champion Mark Cavendish made a successful return to track cycling winning the scratch race at the Manchester velodrome. In his first track appearance since the 2009 World Championships, Cavendish won in front of a sell-out crowd at the National Cycling Centre.

Australia proved to be England's tormentors once again with a stirring display to win the 2011 Four Nations title at Elland Road. The victory gave Kangaroos’ captain Darren Lockyer, who scored the final try of the game in his last match, a fitting career finale. Sam Thaiday's early try was cancelled out just

Cavendish took the honours in the scratch race ahead of Steven Burke. He said after the race: "It all started off here [in Manchester] so it's good to come back." The scratch race at the Revolution 34 event was competed over 15km, with Cavendish winning in a time of 17 minutes exactly. Team Sky's Alex Dowsett and Geraint Thomas made early breaks in the race, but eventually finished in 15th and 18th place respectively.

Blatter says sorry but stops short of a full apology Trying to stem the uproar caused by his comments on racism, FIFA president Sepp Blatter expressed regret on Friday for causing offense to anyone but stopped short of a full apology, and he rejected calls to resign. Blatter said he was sorry for the furor caused by his claim that racist abuse does not exist on the soccer field and that any racial incidents could be settled by a handshake at the end of a match. The latest back-track comes after Blatter was ridiculed in Britain for his comments. Prime Minister David Cameron joined a wave of condemnation, and David Beckham called the Blatter statements "appalling". Head of the PFA Gordon Taylor also urged Blatter to resign. Blatter says he cannot, and added, “the Fifa presidency is a mission, not a job”.

MBE boost for athlete Jessica Ennis Sheffield athlete Jessica Ennis said receiving an MBE for her services to athletics has given her a boost. The London 2012 Olympic hopeful was presented with the honour by the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace. She discussed her training with Prince Charles as she was presented the award. Ennis added: "He asked me how training was going and told me he was looking forward to the Olympics." When asked if the award felt as good as receiving a gold medal, she replied: "It's definitely up there." Ennis, 25, said 2008 had been a disappointing year but it also set the stage for a significant comeback.
