CONTAGION IN THE EUROZONE - NATIONAL NEWS
Tough economic times ahead TheParis-basedOrganisationforEconomicCooperationand Development(OECD)predictedonMondaythattheSpanish economy will grow by only 0.3 percent next year after contracting in the last quarter of this year. It said this will push unemployment – already more than double the average in the European Union at 21.5 per cent – even higher to an average of 22.9 percent in 2012,
with over five million people out of work. However, Spain will have plenty of company, according to the organisation, which warned that the UK and the
eurozone could be entering a recession. As a result it has cut its global growth forecast. CONTINueD ON PAge 2

Tough economic times ahead Pier Carlo Padoan, the deputy secretary-general and chief economist at the OECD said "the situation is of particular concern in the eurozone" and warned of "contagion in the euro area". Despite the OECD’s gloomy prediction, the Spanish stock market has begun to pick up, apparently encouraged by signs that the EU countries may be finally reaching an agreement on how to tackle their current economic woes.
Meanwhile, the incoming Partido Popular government has stressed its commitment to the goals agreed with the European Commission to reduce the country’s deficit. PP secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal assured reporters on Monday that there "should be not the least doubt that Spain will meet its commitments". She said that despite pressure from both inside and outside the country, Prime Ministerelect Mariano Rajoy cannot reveal his plans for any

spending cuts until “he knows just how big the deficit is”, adding that the outgoing Socialist government had still not supplied any figures. Sr Rajoy has spoken to more than 20 world leaders since the November 20th general election and is scheduled to meet business representatives and the unions later this week to discuss spending cuts with them. He will be sworn in as Prime Minister by King Juan Carlos on December 22nd.

Franco’s remains should be exhumed The committee of experts which was set up to make recommendations about the future of the Valley of the Fallen have said Franco’s remains should be exhumed and handed over to his family for reburial – if the Church agrees. It said the presence of his grave there “distorts” the meaning of the monument which Franco built in memory of the victims of the civil war because he was not a victim himself. Franco’s daughter Carmen had asked the committee two months ago to allow her father to remain buried in the monument. The committee
said the remains of Falange founder Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera – who is buried next to Franco – could remain because he was a civil war victim, having been executed by the Republicans in November 1936. The committee also decided it would be impossible to exhume the remains of Republicans buried in the mausoleum, as requested by their families. The committee recommended that the names of all the people buried there should be recorded on a cenotaph at the entrance to the monument and that a centre of information should be built there to explain the

As I told you last week, we have now moved offices. It seems like only last week that we moved from our original, tiny office on the square in Coin but it was a year ago and, once again we had outgrown it. Our army helped pack everything up so a huge “Thank you” has to go to Sue, Mick, Abi, Cathy, Jean and Wendy for humping all those boxes about last Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday it was Move day so, once again we all grabbed brooms, brushes and mops to clean the old office and spruce up the new, then came the unpacking bit. You would not believe the amount of stuff we’ve accumulated over the three years (our 3rd birthday is coming up on the 17th of this month!). So Mick and Sue got out of bed early on their Saturday off to help myself and Geoff unpack again. Hopefully, this will be our home now for quite a while – there’s only so much humping one can take! Anyway, the new office is a little out of town, opposite the la Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama road, and we’re above de Cotta law with plenty of parking so you can all pop in to see us again now without having to pay a fortune for parking. Telephone numbers remain the same.

Majority want ‘unity’
Tax collection ‘not fair’ More than 80 per cent of Spaniards are not at all happy with the way taxes are collected, according to a study by the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS) entitled “Public opinion and fiscal policy”. Eighty-two per cent believe those who have more don’t pay more, while 75 per cent don’t think the authorities are doing enough to combat tax fraud. Only 7 per cent believe tax fraud does not exist. Just under 40 per cent believe
that tax dodgers stand little risk of being caught and that if they are caught they are not punished severely enough. More than half of the people participating in the study believe they pay too much tax and don’t get enough in return, saying few resources were allocated to housing, social security and pensions, while a third believe too much money is spent on defence. A majority also believe that the central
government is better at administering public money than local councils or regional governments.
Less than a week after the general election, just over half of Spaniards believed that Prime Minister-elect Mariano Rajoy would govern “for all the people” as he promised throughout the election campaign. The survey carried out by La Razon newspaper also found that more than 70 per cent of those questioned believe unity should prevail over political party differences. Just under half are confident that Sr Rajoy can pull the country out of its current economic

doldrums while more than 70 per cent said his efforts would be hampered by the economic mess left behind by the outgoing Socialist government. An equal number said the financial markets are deliberately targeting Spain.

Stop accidents plea
Youth attitudes ‘disturbing’
The “Stop accidents” movement have asked the incoming government to maintain the Traffic Authority’s commitment to reducing the number of road deaths. A spokesman said that while the number of people killed in road accidents in Spain which had dropped to 2,478 in 2010, down from 5,517 in 2001, was a cause for celebration, it still meant that 41,665 people had lost
their lives during those 10 years and another 205,774 had been injured, “which means that nearly 250,000 families have been affected forever”. According to the World Health Organisation, some 3,500 people are killed on roads every day worldwide and another 100,000 are injured, making road accidents one of the major causes of death at an international level.
Just over 80 per cent of young people aged 14 to 18 believe that girls should give in to their boyfriends’ sexual demands, according to a study released last week on the International Day for the Eradication of Gender Violence. The study was carried out in Madrid and Burgos by the Progressive Women’s Federation (FMP) who questioned some 1,400 young men and women in that age group. FMP president Yolanda Besteiro said as many girls as boys subscribed to that view and only 20 per cent of those questioned saw the connection between it and gender violence. She said most of the participants subscribed to
the stereotypes that boys should be brave and aggressive and girls gentle and understanding. She said the study’s results indicated that young people are living a “false appearance of equality”. She told reporters that just because girls drink as much as boys today they believe they are equals. She said such attitudes were disturbing and indicated a “very dangerous future” for equality between the sexes. Meanwhile, the National
Police have launched a campaign on Youtube, Facebook and Twitter, with a video that shows some of the 72,000 policemen across the country who “are working to guarantee the safety of the victims of domestic violence”. Their message is aimed at women suffering “threats, abuses, insults, physical violence and coercion” from their partners and ends with the plea: “Denounce him”.
Children and babies used as mules The National Police have dismantled a gang that used children and babies as mules to smuggle cocaine into Europe, in collaboration with police in Holland and Belgium. Twenty people have been detained – 16 in Spain and two each in Holland and

Belgium and 11 kilos of cocaine were seized. The traffickers hid small quantities of drugs in babies’ nappies or in older children’s backpacks on the assumption that they were less likely to be searched than grown-ups.
The outgoing Socialist government has praised Morocco for the peaceful way legislative elections were held last Friday in an official communiqué which also reminded the winning party, the Islamist PJD, and the other groups which won seats in the new parliament of their "responsibility to develop the new constitution to consolidate an advanced democracy with complete respect for human rights". King Juan Carlos is also reported to have spoken to King Mohammed VI by phone last weekend. The two monarchs have always enjoyed friendly relations, to the extent that King Juan Carlos described his younger counterpart as his "nephew" back in 1999. Morocco has been spared the trauma of the so-called “Arab spring” thanks to Mohammed VI, who announced constitutional reforms earlier this year which gave the next prime minister a greater degree of independence from the Royal Palace.

Workers union subsidies endangered Church won’t ask for U-turn on gay marriage The auxiliary bishop of Madrid and spokesman for the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) has said the Church hierarchy will not ask the new Partido Popular government to abolish laws on gay marriage and abortion which were passed by the outgoing Socialist government. Bishop Juan Antonio Martínez told reporters that the Church never tried to tell governments how they should legislate: "The CEE never tells any ruler
what to do. It has not done so with previous governments, and it will not do so with this one." When reminded of a number of major demonstrations against the laws which were attended by members of the Church hierarchy, including CEE leader Cardinal Antonio María Rouco, Bishop Martínez put their attendance down to the fact that the law on gay marriage was "absolutely unheard of in the history of Western civilisation".

Crisis boosts El Gordo sales A spokesman for Ventura 24.es, one of the main sales outlets for lottery tickets on the internet, said on Tuesday that sales of El Gordo Christmas lottery had increased by more than 28 per cent over the same period last year. He said that Spaniards were buying tickets earlier this year, rather than at the last minute – last year, they bought 20,000 tickets in the two days before the draw.
The Partido Popular’s general election victory “had to be like a jug of cold water for the unions”, according to El Pais. The paper reported that in the past four years the outgoing Socialist government had granted subsidies amounting to more than €1,000 million to the General Workers Union (UGT) and the Workers Commissions (CC.OO).

Large amounts have also been allocated to the unions’ involvement with the Historical Memory Law which was passed to right the wrongs of the Franco regime.
A poll shows that people do not intend to buy fewer tickets this year, despite the crisis. MADRID
More Spaniards to the UK The number of Spaniards migrating to the UK has increased by 12.6 per cent this year, according to figures issued by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Overall, 14,108 Spaniards left the country in the first three months of this year, as opposed to 10,817 in the same period last year. However, 7,875 returned home – twice as many as in the same period last year. The INE said that as many women as men were leaving to seek work or study abroad.

Woman 'killed and cooked husband' Police have arrested a woman for allegedly killing and cooking her husband in the southern city of Karachi. Her nephew was also detained in connection with the murder. Police are still investigating but a spokesman said they believe she drugged her husband after he attempted to rape her daughter from an earlier marriage. They alleged she then butchered him and cooked some body parts in a broth. The stench alerted the neighbours who then contacted the police. Formal charges will be made later this week.
The only daughter of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, Svetlana Alliluyeva, has died of colon cancer in a care home in Wisconsin. She was 85. US officials said Lana Peters, as she was also known, died on November 22nd. Canada mars UN climate summit opening
Foreign gold reserves repatriated
The country has received its first shipment of gold bars, after President Hugo Chavez ordered the repatriation of 85% of the country's bullion reserves – around 160 tonnes of gold, worth more than £7bn. Chavez said the move was to protect Venezuela's reserves
from global economic turbulence but critics have said he fears Venezuela's overseas assets could one day be frozen by sanctions. Officials said the gold had come from European countries. Most of Venezuela's foreign gold reserves are held in London.
Just a few hours after the UN climate summit opened on Monday in Durban, PHiLiPPiNEs South Africa, Canadian environment minister Peter Kent confirmed to Little people thinking big reporters in the capital Ottawa that its involvement with Kyoto was over. He said: “We will not make a second commitment to Kyoto. We don't need a binding convention." Canada declared four years ago that it did not intend to meet its existing Kyoto Protocol
commitment – to bring annual emissions in the period 2008-12 down by 6% from their 1990 level. They have in fact risen by about one-third since 1990. Mr Kent refused to comment on a report by
the Canadian network CTV that the government intended to begin formally withdrawing from the protocol next month. The US withdrew from the protocol under
President George W Bush. Russia and Japan have also said they will not make further emission cuts under the protocol, but have not yet formally announced plans to withdraw.
People of small stature in Manila want to build a new community of small houses on a greenfield site. A wealthy benefactor has donated a 6,000-square-metre plot of uncultivated land near the town of Montalban, where they plan to build "Dwarf City". Their idea is to construct buildings tailored to their size, to represent certain themes, and they hope they will be able to earn at least part of their income through tourism. They have already formed a group called the Little People's Association.

Syria 'commits crimes against humanity' Syria's security forces have committed systematic "crimes against humanity" in their crackdown on anti-government protesters, according to a UN report released at a news conference in Geneva on Monday. The three-member independent panel said civilians – including children – have been murdered, tortured and sexually assaulted. The panel interviewed 223 victims, witnesses, and army defectors from the end of September until mid-
November 2011. However, its members said they were denied entry into Syria itself. The Syrian government has consistently claimed that it is fighting armed gangs. More than 3,500 people have reportedly died in the violence since March.
The commission – which was set up by the UN Human Rights Council – urged the Syrian government to end the violence immediately and punish those responsible, but Syria has so far not cooperated with any UN requests.
Land ban angers Chinese tycoon Chinese business tycoon Huang Nubo who had offered a billion krona (£5.4m) for the 115 sq mile region in north-east Iceland earlier this year has hit out at the government's decision to reject his bid. Mr Huang had wanted to turn the land – about 0.3% of Iceland's total land mass into an eco-tourist resort and golf course. Some top officials had backed the
plan, saying it would provide jobs and was in the country's economic interests, but others had voiced concern that the move would help China gain a strategic foothold in a region where climate change is expected to open up new shipping routes and make oil and gas deposits accessible. Iceland's interior ministry said the deal did not comply with land sale
rules, adding that "there is no precedent for land on this scale being sold to foreigners". Mr Huang has accused the West of double standards. He told the Global Times newspaper: "We always hear some Western countries urging China to be more open, but at the same time, they set up trade barriers and guard against Chinese investors and companies."

Mostly doom and gloom from the Chancellor Chancellor George Osborne has revealed official growth forecasts have been slashed and admitted the government is preparing in case Britain slides into a double-dip recession. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is now predicting the economy will only grow by 0.9% this year, down from a previous estimate of 1.7%. It also forecasts growth of 0.7% next year – a sharp downgrade on its March prediction of 2.5%. In his Autumn Statement, Mr Osborne said the OBR had found the debt challenge was "even greater than we thought because the boom was even bigger, the bust even deeper and the effects will last even longer". The watchdog now predicts the structural deficit will not be eliminated until 2016/17, putting it well beyond the next general election.
THESPA
THESPA will be holding their Annual General Meeting at the Masonic Hall, Edificio Bouganvilla, Los Boliches tonight, Wednesday November 30th at 7pm prompt. After the meeting, their first play is a comedy by Jean McConnell entitled “Theatrical Digs” that is directed by Jean Fenton.
The Chancellor vowed the coalition would do everything possible to protect the UK from the "debt storm" engulfing the eurozone but warned it would be difficult to avoid a new recession if no solution is found. He outlined a series of measures aimed at promoting growth, helping struggling families and boosting business – including eye-catching freezes in fuel duty and limits on rail fare rises. But there was more woe for the public sector ahead of Wednesday's industrial action over pensions, with workers facing a cap on average pay rises of 1% for two years once the current pay freeze ends. The OBR has also warned that as many as 600,000 jobs could be lost from the public sector by 2015/16 – a dramatic increase on its previous estimate of 400,000. By the following year, the figure could reach 710,000.
Are you pondering what you get when you pay your electricity bill?
Both plays are being put on by kind permission of Samuel French Ltd. Bookings may be made on the THESPA noticeboard in Salon Varietes, Fuengirola or by calling the number below. Further information can be found at their website at theatrecostadelsol.com

a recession caused by a chronic lack of confidence in the ability of countries to deal with their debts. "We will do whatever it takes to protect Britain from this debt storm while doing all we can to build the foundations of future growth." The lower growth figures are a major blow to the Chancellor and the coalition, which had been banking on a growing private sector compensating for the deep spending cuts. Shadow chancellor Ed Balls said they showed the economy was flatlining and had suffered "all of the pain and none of the gain" at the government's hands. He claimed the coalition's austerity agenda had been "entirely counterproductive and self-defeating", adding: "Plan A has failed and it's failed colossally." Mr Osborne admitted the stalling recovery means the government is now set
to borrow £111bn more than planned over the next five years to plug the gap. The limits on public sector pay rises to 1% on average for two years after the current freeze ends will help save money but risks deepening the rift with the unions ahead of a major strike over pensions tomorrow. The Chancellor told MPs the government could not afford a 2% rise assumed by some departments. He said: "This is a significant step towards creating a more balanced economy in the regions that does not squeeze out the private sector." He also indicated that the state pension age would now go up from 66 to 67 as soon as 2026 – saving £59bn in the long term. He revealed the OBR is predicting unemployment will rise from 8.1% this year to 8.7% next year, before falling to 6.2% by 2016.

Investors supporting firms with fewer than 25 employees will be eligible for 50% income tax relief on the money they invest up to £100,000 a year, and will receive a one-year capital gains tax holiday. The Chancellor said: "In this tough time, we are helping where we can."Mr Osborne told MPs the OBR was not predicting the UK would suffer a double-dip recession, as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) did earlier this week. But he warned it would be difficult to avoid another recession in the UK if the rest of Europe starts contracting and said government was the already planning for "all the potential outcomes" of the euro crisis. The Chancellor said: "Much of Europe now appears to be heading into
In good news for households, fuel duty will no longer rise in January and it will only rise by 3p in August. Meanwhile, rail fare increases have also been capped at 1% above inflation. The basic state pension will rise by £5.30 to £107.45, while those pensioners receiving pension credit will also benefit from an increase worth £5.35. Work-related benefits will also be uprated in line with the CPI inflation rate of 5.2% recorded in September, Mr Osborne confirmed. However, some of the money will be clawed back by holding down increases in elements of the tax credit system. To help small businesses, the Chancellor also announced a sixmonth extension to the current business rate relief holiday, taking it to April 2013. He said a £50m fund for small business risk capital

Free Olympics The victims and the families of those killed in the July 7th London bombings will get free tickets to the opening Ceremony and athletics finals at the olympic Games. The Greater London Authority has gained 263 tickets to the olympics to honour a promise made by former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone. Mr Livingstone vowed to allow family members of the 52 people killed and the 39 people who suffered the most serious life-changing injuries during the 2005 terrorism acts to watch the Games.
Tony Nicklinson, now aged 57, had a stroke in 2005 which left him the ability to communicate by eye movement only. As well as that he suffers from “locked in syndrome” leaving him totally paralysed and dependent on his family for everything. He added: “Why should I suffer these indignities?” If the ruling ends in his favour, it would enable doctors in the UK to assist in euthanasia without fear of prosecution and his solicitor said: "This will be a test case and raises many difficult legal, moral and ethical questions about euthanasia. Marta del Castillo trial enters final phase
The trial of the alleged murderer of 17-year-old Marta Castillo who disappeared in January 2009 enters its final phase this week, with the prosecution and the defence presenting their final arguments to the court in Sevilla. The prosecution accuses Marta’s former boyfriend, Miguel Carcaño, with her rape and murder and has asked for a jail sentence of 52 years. The prosecution also accuses Carcaño’s brother Javier Delgado, Maria Garcia and Samuel Benitez, of helping him to remove the girl’s body from the flat where the murder took place, to transport it to an unknown destination. Carcaño confessed to the murder shortly after it happened but he and the other three have denied knowing where the body is.
On Monday, the prosecution asked them for “a final gesture of manliness” by revealing where the girl’s remains are. The defence’s argument is that Carcaño did not intend to kill Marta when he hit her over the head with an ashtray and should only be found guilty of “homicidio imprudente” (reckless homicide) which carries a much lighter sentence. The defence has also asked for the other three to be absolved, saying there is insufficient

evidence against them. A fourth person, known as El Cuco, who was a minor at the time of the murder, was absolved earlier this year when his mother swore he had not left the house on the night of the murder. Carcaño had accused him of raping Marta and helping him to strangle her. Several witnesses have said they saw him in the area on the night of the murder and court sources said that he and his mother may be charged with perjury.

Councils behind on salaries
‘Punto limpio’ thefts increase
The general Workers Union (UgT) has taken the case of municipal workers’ unpaid salaries to the Defensor del Pueblo (Peoples’ Defender). more than 10,000 people employed by 51 local councils across andalucia have not received their salaries for several months and 760 have been dismissed. The provinces with the worst record are Cadiz and Sevilla. a UgT spokesman said the case was just the tip of the iceberg, but the unions are still in the process of collecting the necessary documentation.
Thefts of household artefacts containing parts made from copper or aluminium have increased considerably at Estepona’s punto limpio in the past year. Workers at the depot said its fences are not very strong and the thieves – whom they believe are mainly scrap merchants – find it easy to breach them. The depot closes at 3 pm Monday to Friday and does not open over the weekend. It is located in an isolated spot on the outskirts of the town, which “only makes it easier for the thieves”, the workers said. There has been no public outcry, they added, “because they’re only stealing what nobody wants”.

The police arrested 11 people last week and seized 550 kilos of cocaine hidden in boxes of bananas in the port. The drug was hidden between sheets of plastic lining the boxes. Police said the traffickers chose algeciras because the customs procedure was quicker there and the inspections less exhaustive. in a similar case two years ago in Tarragona, some of the drug escaped detection – a supermarket worker discovered a packet of cocaine in a box of bananas a year after the main seizure.

Meeting the demands and interests of the citizens of Malaga, whatever their age, social status, education or cultural interests is the theatre’s one and only goal; This is the premise they start from when they design their programme of events.
The spectacles programmed at Teatro Cervantes are divided up according to the classical and common order of theatrical genres: opera, music, theatre and dance, all of which include a multitude of varieties which often come together in a mixture of different combinations to obtain results which are difficult to describe with labels of standard categories.
They work to respond effectively to the needs and desires of their audience and, in this sense, do not follow any specific genres, but show all new trends that are constantly being born, developing, multiplying and transforming on the international artistic scene. Tsunami in the Socialist Party Mutiny in the PP
I
It looked as if the Socialists were going to face up to their election trouncing in a fairly orderly and mature way – until two old hands waded into the fray. Alfonso Guerra, who was the right-hand man of former PM Felipe Gonzalez during his 14 years in power, fired the opening shots. He criticised the Socialist Party’s focus on who its next leader will be, saying “too many people are trying to start building the house from the roof down, when we should worrying about what happened on November 20th and why.” He said a change of generations at the top was natural but it should not be “change just for the sake of it”. His utterances were reasonable up to that point, then he aimed his sights at a specific group: “This obsession with putting young people in power, and better still if they’re women, is not a good tactic.” The targets were “Zapatero’s girls” – starting with outgoing Defence minister Carme Chacon, outgoing Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez and outgoing Health minister Leire Pajin. Of the three, only Chacon has expressed a desire to be the party’s secretary general, which would automatically make her its candidate for the next general election. Pajin is said to be sounding out the support for such a move, while Jimenez, an elected MP on the party’s slate for Malaga, seems to be – wisely – keeping her head down.
win votes in that region.
S
o it looks as if Bono has been selected to lead the charge against Chacon who, according to some critics, only got the Defence minister’s job because “she was a woman and pregnant at the time” – the embodiment of Zapatero’s dearest wish to see a woman in La Moncloa Palace, the Prime Minister’s official residence. Her appointment was also his version of thumbing his nose at the military – something good Socialists love doing.
I
f the party opts for defeated candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba as its next secretary general at the party congress in February, it will stand a good chance of surviving to fight other battles. But if it opts for a lightweight like Chacon, who seems to have done little beyond escorting back home the bodies of Spanish soldiers killed in Afghanistan since she was appointed Defence minister, then I think the party will spend a long time in the political wilderness – if it survives at all. She has also repeatedly flouted protocol by wearing trousers suits at the National Day military parades, when protocol calls for dresses, making people wonder what other timehonoured customs she’ll flout if ever in a position to do so.
M
Carme Chacon
B
ut as usual it was that old war horse, former Defence minister and mostly recently Speaker, Jose Bono, who took the bull by the horns. “The next secretary general must be someone who can say wholeheartedly ‘Viva España’”, he told reporters on Monday, a not-verysubtle reference to Chacon, who is a Catalan, and the rift between the Socialist Party and its branch in Catalonia, which calls itself the Partido Socialista-Catalonia (PSC) V and which has been sounding more and more “independentista” (proindependence from Spain) in an effort to
eanwhile Mariano Rajoy is playing his cards very, very close to his chest. He says he can’t say anything about spending cuts until he knows just how big a deficit the country is burdened with. And as for who his ministers will be – all he has said is that “the King will be the first to know their names” because he has to approve them before Rajoy is sworn in on December 22nd. We do know that he’s spoken to more than 20 international leaders, as well as local bankers and businessmen and is due to meet the unions this week to float spending cuts past them. But you can’t please everyone all of the time and I think it’s safe to say that the unions plan to give Rajoy a roasting – after keeping fairly quiet for the past eight years. Well, you don’t bite the hand that feeds you – and no doubt we’ll soon find out just how much money the Socialist government threw at the unions to keep them happy.
S
o while things look pretty quiet at the moment, I think the you-know-what will start hitting the fan as soon as the incoming government gets its hands on all the facts and figures. Be prepared for a rough ride.

P
hen it comes to strategy in sports, some of the best moves can be seen on the soccer pitch. In politics, the choice manoeuvres are usually moving or getting rid of the people around you who are heavy baggage and, of course, when you need to flex a little muscle. This is what occurred last Wednesday when regional premier Esperanza Aguirre took it upon herself to fire the secretary general of the Madrid Partido Popular (PP) Francisco Granados. It was a stunning blow for Granados, who had already fallen out of favour with Madrid’s iron lady chief. And it happened so quick that it took a lot of PP officials by surprise. he 47-year-old Granados learned about his fate about half an hour before the regular meeting of the party’s executive committee was about to begin. Aguirre changed the meeting’s agenda 15 minutes beforehand. There were protests during the tense encounter because many thought the Madrid regional premiere was overstepping her bounds. About a dozen committee members refused to attend the meeting after they learned about the change in the agenda. But Aguirre found a clause in the party’s bylaws that supported her move. “This is a normal removal of a party secretary general based on the statutes which state that the regional premier can ask the executive committee for the removal and that’s exactly how it occurred,” Aguirre told reporters afterwards.
or his part, Granados was faithful to Aguirre throughout his incumbency. In 2007, she named him interior and justice commissioner – a post he held until June this year. But it was his ongoing beef with his arch enemy Ignacio González that got him into trouble. In 2009, El País broke a story about a reported political espionage scandal inside the Madrid government. According to the allegations, Granados hired former Civil Guard and expolice officers to tail PP officials such as González, Madrid Deputy Mayor Manuel Cobo and Alfredo Prada, his predecessor as justice commissioner. Granados denied the allegations. rosecutors investigated the case for two-and-a-half years but decided to drop the inquiry. The Madrid Provincial Court reopened the case this year at the insistence of the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM). Then came other allegations about Granados’ finances, trips and a suppose tailing of González during a trip to Colombia. Enough was enough for Aguirre. She stripped him of his portfolios in June and relegated him to regional assembly’s senate.
T
he entire affair seems to have created divisions between Aguirre, who is dying to take control of the PP, and Mariano Rajoy, the prime ministerelect, who has finally consolidated his power inside the PP following his November 20th landslide victory. After getting rid of Granados – a Rajoy faithful – Aguirre appointed her deputy premier Ignacio González – a Rajoy foe – to become the new secretary general in Madrid.
T
T
I
he Madrid regional chief tried to lead a coup following Rajoy’s humiliating 2008 defeat at the polls, and González and a few others were backing her. She didn’t succeed and from then on blood continued to reach the waters. Rajoy and Aguirre had many confrontations, including a high-profile bickering the following year over who was going to preside on the Caja Madrid savings bank board.
Francisco Granados
hose who know Granados say that he never fell on her good side. “Ignacio is much closer to the regional premier, and never felt that Granados posed any threat,” one of Gonzalez’s closest friends told El País last week.
t is no secret that Granados is jockeying for a position with Rajoy’s new government. The self-lobbying effort appears to have also irked Aguirre. But the chess game isn’t over – it is only beginning. As Rajoy strives to solve the country’s grave economic problems, he will have to deal with what appears to be a mutinous faction in his own party whose members are standing in the wings waiting for him to slip and fall.

Community News Bah, Humbug! Concerts for Christmas and a trip to the Malaga Belenes
BADA brings you one of our best loved Christmas stories with all the familiar characters that you have come to expect, Scrooge, the Cratchits, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and maybe a few you weren't expecting. As Christmas Eve descends on Victorian London, something strange is happening in Ebenezer Scrooge's house – bah, humbug! – a journey to enlightenment, a re-birth!
This social comment on the state of the poor and needy of Charles Dickens' time may still have something to tell us today. With fun and thrills it is a modern parable, taking us on an entertaining and spooky journey to the cold heart of Mr Scrooge and then warming it up for our delight. BADA says: “We are delighted and excited to be
The International Music Society (T.I.M.S.) choir and orchestra will present a Christmas concert at El Campanario (The Norwegian Church), Calahonda on Wednesday 7th December at 7.00pm.
performing at the Salon Varietes once again in this, our Golden Anniversary year – meeting old friends and making many new ones we sincerely hope. Please join BADA in commemorating and celebrating 50 years of providing high quality, challenging drama in what promises to be yet another evening of excellent entertainment and fun for all the family."
The programme will include a selection of beautiful Christmas music, including traditional carols and popular favourites.
Tickets are €10 each and will be available at the entrance. On Monday 12th December, as part of their run up to Christmas, T.I.M.S. choir will present their Concert For Christmas in the Main Salon at Lux Mundi. Tapas and refreshments will be available and the whole thing starts at 11.00am. It's

Collegium Musicum first time Collegium Musicum are very proud that the choir and orchestra, Collegium Musicum, are the first to perform the “Magnificat” by John Rutter in the Malaga region. It is a wonderful piece. An interesting anecdote
Ipufm!Ubnjtb!Hpmg!jt!pggfsjoh!nboz Disjtunbt!Gftujwjujft!uijt!zfbs
is that John Rutter wrote “This is the Day 2” that was commissioned for the wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales with Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey. It was first performed on Friday 29th April by the choir of Westminster Abbey, the choir of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, James O’Donnell and Robert Quinney. You can find more on www.johnrutter.com The soprano soloist is going to be Hungarian Alinka Kozári who is currently performing with the English National Opera. She is a graduate of the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy, Budapest, Birmingham Conservatoire, where she held the
Weingarten Scholarship, and National Opera Studio, London. She currently studies with Lillian Watson. She was the winner of the 2006 Mario Lanza Opera Prize and the St. Clare Barfield Memorial Bowl for Operatic Distinction, Alinka is the holder of an Independent Opera Postgraduate Voice Fellowship and has been awarded the prestigious Hungarian State Eötvös Scholarship. She has held rôles including Berenice, L'occasione fa il ladro for Minatour Opera, Countess, The Marriage of Figaro, for English Touring Opera, Gilda, Rigoletto, for Iford Arts Festival, and the cover
of Fiorilla, and Il Turco in Italia for Garsington Opera. Alinka has recently performed the role (to critical acclaim) of Walter, La Wally for Opera Holland Park and she is currently covering the role of Phoebe, Castor and Pollux for English National Opera. The first concert is on Sunday, December 18th in Benalmádena Costa, at 8pm in the Church of Our Lady of Carmen (near Bonanza Square). The second concert is on Monday, December 19th at 21:00 hrs in the Church of the Encarnación (Marbella Old Town). Think what could happen in a crash if you don’t secure your dog. Your dog could be thrown through the front window incurring severe injury or even death. Your dog could act as a missile hitting the driver and causing them to veer out of control.Your dog could be thrown from the back seat at such force they could break bones or incur life threatening internal injuries. Your dog could be knocked unconscious or experience such shock that it permanently changes their personality. If your dog is a large breed,
such as a Labrador, he could be catapulted through the car with the force of a baby elephant, in all likelihood, injuring all in his way. It is unlikely that the dog would survive such a violent impact. In Spain it is, of course, the law that your dog must be restrained in the car. In the event of an accident a dog which is loose could run straight into the traffic and be killed or even cause another accident. Did you know? In Britain there are eight million dog owners. 35% of dog owners consider their dog as their
ideal travel partners, with a further 10% saying their dog is more entertaining than their partner, child or best friend. 88% of Brits agreed that belting up is the key to dog safety. 60% have NEVER done this. Making a dog wear a special harness is not unkind – most pets will actually feel more secure when they are restrained, either by using a harness, in a travel kennel, or behind a dog guard. the
Trip to Gib cave concert On Friday December 9th The Rotary Club of Gibraltar are holding a Christmas concert in St Michael’s Cave in aid of charity, for the second year running. All those who attended last year were so impressed that many have already booked again for this year. The concert starts at 8.00pm. There will be a coach going from the Bull Ring in Estepona, leaving at 6.15pm. In Gibraltar, small coaches will be provided
from the Coach Park to the caves and back for those coming by coach from Estepona. Tickets for the concert will be £20 (or Euro equivalent) and the coach will cost 6 Euros. To avoid disappointment book your place as soon as possible as seats on the coach are going fast. Contact Rotarian Chris Rawlinson by telephone on 952 793 969.
Estepona residents getting organised Did you know that more than one quarter of the people living in Estepona are from foreign parts? Some live there permanently and others come and go for shorter periods during the year. It is important that the quarter living there have a voice in the community. To that end an official organisation was formed and approved by the Junta de Andalucia with registration no. 7182. This is the official Foreign Residents’ Association in Estepona, which is nonpolitical and non-profit making and is known as “AREME” for short – A.R.E.M.E. (Asociacion de Residentes Extranjeros de Municipio de Estepona). Every foreign resident in Estepona (including Spanish from other parts of Spain) needs to join the organisation, so that residents become a large enough group who can speak to the town hall, the police and other important public institutions and organisations on behalf of all foreigners. The cost of joining AREME is only €1 – not exactly expensive! Application forms can be obtained from the tourist office in the centre of Estepona or by email from Ray Oldfield at rayoldfield@gmail.com or Chris Rawlinson at dr_c_rawlinson@hotmail. com. Every three months the committee meet with the councillor for tourism and other organisations from Estepona where they can make representation to the
town hall about matters of importance to all the area’s residents. They are working hard to get the local bus restored but are told that the town hall at present is in debt to the bus company and until that is paid, nothing further can be done. The hospital bus is ably assisting in the afternoons and evenings for the time being, but that is very unsatisfactory for those needing a morning bus and this is being addressed by AREME. AREME usually holds a monthly table sale and coffee morning to raise money for local charities. The town hall has kindly said they can hold them at the Palacio de Congresos, either outside if the weather is good, or in the foyer/entrance corridors if it is bad. There will be a Christmas fair in the same place this Saturday, December 5th. Parking is easy at the back of the Palacio and many bargains can be obtained at these table sales where you can also buy yourself scrumptious homemade cakes, scones and the odd pot of jam or marmalade. Tables cost €5 each but you need to provide your own table for at least the next two sales. If you wish to book a table please contact Heather ButlerRawlinson on 952 793 969. Please tell all your friends and acquaintances about AREME and about the table sales but more importantly come along to see for yourself!
High Tea Christmas Fair this week and an open day High Tea will be served at the Tamisa Golf Hotel on this Saturday from 5pm until 6pm due to the great response from visitors to the last high tea event but, this time, there will be a Christmas twist to it. Tickets are €7 per person and you can call Lisa on 658 351 642 to book your place. The Tamisa Golf Hotel can be found on the road going up to Coin and Alhaurin, overlooking Mijas Golf. Then on Sunday the 4th December, PAD will once again be holding one of their hugely popular open days at the shelter from 12 noon to 3pm. Join them for drinks and tapas and meet the animals in their care and, you never know, you might even meet your new best friend and companion for life. Call Lisa for more information on 658 351 642.
C.A.P. Club Charity and Pleasure is a friendly, social organisation based in El Paraiso, Estepona, meeting at 11 a.m. each Wednesday morning at The Oak, El Paraiso Barronal, for coffee; many weeks there is a speaker. Weekly activities include bridge, whist and bowls, and members have recently started a choir. Other events and excursions include visits to the theatre and exhibitions; lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast; mystery trips, etc. A full programme of events is published in CAP’s free quarterly magazine, and regularly updated online. They also raise money for local charities, mainly Alzheimer’s, Aprona, Aspandem and Cudeca. New members are welcome – annual membership is only €15. Why not go along for coffee? You will be assured of a warm welcome. For more information contact Denise Ghazi, President, on 952 810989, or visit www.capsonlinemag.net. Don’t be alone at Christmas - join up and make new friends!
The beautiful restaurant Mijas Playa will be hosting a Christmas Fair this Saturday, December 3rd from 10.30am to 4pm with all profits being donated to the Alhaurin Children’s home. You will be able to buy Christmas gifts, decorations and cakes, there is a good-as-new stand selling designer clothes and accessories, Bunches florists and Anne, an international medium will also be there plus a raffle, tombola and much more.
“Santa” will be on hand to meet the children and a special three-course Christmas lunch with all the trimmings for €15 will be available from 12.30 till 3.30pm. There will be music and carol singing from the resident pianist and guests to entertain everyone. To book a stand costing €20 (all of which will go to the childrens’ home), or for further details call the Restaurant Mijas Playa Events manager on 659 121 472 and to book Christmas lunch call 952 493 749 or

Professor Finlayson, now regarded as a leading world authority in the field of human origins and also a scientist of the prestigious Academia Europaea, was the first to introduce the concept of a Mid-latitude Belt which once stretched from Gibraltar in the west to China in the east. Professor Finlayson’s ideas, which included the

as climate changed – lessons that we can draw from in trying to predict future events. Gibraltar was central to a small region of south-western Iberia, which included coastal areas such as today’s Doñana National Park in Spain, which stretched to the area of Lisbon. “This region was part of the Mid-latitude Belt and its affinities lie more with North Africa to the south than with Europe to the north” said Professor Finlayson. There were times when things in Gibraltar went bad – around 25 thousand years ago there was the worst climate Gibraltar had seen for a quarter-of-amillion years.

Springtime in winter

The autumn rains seemed to come later this year after the long hot summer but it hasn't taken long for the campo to turn green as millions of tiny sleeping seeds burst into life.

n a hot and sticky end-of-summer day when everything is covered in a fine layer of dust and the only things growing – apart from the olive trees – seem to be a few hardy yellow weeds, the lush growth of the Spanish springtime with its carpets of colourful April and May flowers is a distant memory. But we are lucky here in Andalucia to have a second springtime and shortly after the first rains if you go walking in the countryside you can find tiny flowers that bloom towards the end of the year – dancing white bells, delicate six-petalled “pheasant's eye” narcissi looking like little stars, and patches of golden celandines (or near

his week saw the passing of British film director Ken Russell and, love him or hate him, his work was certainly controversial – if little else.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Hugo By Martin Scorsese Starring: Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Sacha Baron Cohen Hugo (The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’ Asa Butterfield) is a young orphan who lives in the railroad station of Paris in 1931. He may only be young but he is responsible for keeping all the station clocks in order while his uncle (Ray Winstone), whose job it is, spends all his time drinking. Hugo has to steal to survive, and in his spare time he tries to carry on the work of his dead father
(Jude Law, in flashback) and repair an automated man – the boy is convinced that if he can repair the machine he will unlock a secret message left to him by his father. But when he is caught thieving for parts by a toy merchant (Kingsley) it would seem that the game is up. The movie has been overwhelmingly well received by the critics, who have fallen for a visual feast of film making which pays
homage to the early years of the cinema. From Scorsese, the Academy Award winner who has built a legacy of marvellous films that are a part of the Hollywood pantheon, you would expect masterful direction.
What is remarkable is that here the master has delivered his first film in 3D which is a true family film adventure that is set to enter the list of classic films that bear repeated viewing.
Classic Must Have Faith Restored
By Abigail Tyler
By Amy Thomas
The first on our list of “must have” albums, needs no introduction and is probably one of the best ever recorded. This week’s must have album is The Rolling Stones 1972 masterpiece, “Exile on Main Street”. The album just has such a feel to it, carefree, raunchy, enlightening, gritty, and don't forget to boogie. It’s hard to think of any other album that can mix rock with blues, with country, with boogie, with R and B – and a mixture of all the above on some tracks – pull it off and make it sound so good and feel so great. One of my favourites has to be the Stone s version of Shake Your Hips. Don t get me wrong, I love Slim Harpo’s original version, but
the Stones just make it that bit better, naughtier, grittier. among the obvious classics like Tumbling Dice, Happy and Sweet Virginia are some fantastic little numbers like Loving Cup, Sweet Black Angel, All Down the Line and Shine a Light. The energy level on this album is astounding, as is the album itself. "Exile On Main Street" belongs in your CD collection. Believe me, it won't be gathering dust!
Just when I thought that modern music (especially rock `n´ roll) was dead, I was introduced to an excellent band and my faith was restored. The band is “Danny and the Champions of the World” and, although I never heard their first album, I have heard their latest, and it’s brilliant. “Hearts and Arrows” is just what the doctor ordered. Danny´s voice reminds me of David Gray, with a slight cry in it, yet comforting at the same time. Unlike Gray, Danny´s songs are far more upbeat and uplifting. The opening track Ghosts in the Wire kicks off the album perfectly, with a hint of Springsteen and a lot of soul, this is definitely one of my favourites. A little further down the track list, we have Soul in the City, which will have you bopping around the house in no time.
This album has a flavour of the 80s, but in a good way. It´s like a collection of all the best ‘70s and ‘80s rock – which can be heard in You Don´t Know and The Colonel and the King. The final song Walk with Me is certainly well placed, as it is a great cool- down number, slow and sweet. Danny and the Champs, are bringing back that good ol´ British rock `n´ roll. They are a great feel good band that will lift your spirits through these tough times. In January 2012, they will be playing in Spain, go to ww.dannyandthechamps.com for further details.
ussell had a penchant for making unreliable sensationalised biopics of musicians and writers, debasing and ridiculing them in the process. The most balanced of his films was his 1969 adaptation of D.H.Lawrence’s “Women in Love”, featuring the infamous nude wrestling scene between Alan Bates and Oliver Reed. It was this movie that earmarked his descent into depravity and bad taste. The incoherent 1970 movie “The Music Lovers” dealt with Tschaikovsky’s tortured homosexual life and ended with a disturbing Glenda Jackson in a lunatic assylum. Ms Jackson, who appeared in many Russell movies –, usually as the object of his obsession of degrading and humiliating women – firmly put her foot down when he asked her to star in his next tasteless escapade.
“
The Devils” (1971). Here, once again, Russell takes on an extremely intelligent book – Aldous Huxley’s “The Devils of Loudon” – and totally disregards its historic values as to the implications of the Catholic Church in French politics and the reasons so many women ended up in convents. Instead, he gives us a sensational account of sexually frustrated hysteria. (The word ‘hysteria’ springs to mind frequently when describing Russell’s films, as does the term ‘shock for shock’s sake). Jackson was reported as saying there was no way she would play another sexually psychotic woman for Russell, and so the role fell to Vanessa Redgrave. 1971 also saw Russell completely missing the point once again in his over-the-top version on Sandy Wilson’s “The Boyfriend”, starring Twiggy and the incredibly longlegged legend Tommy Tune. Russell’s lovely use of costume and ‘Busby Berkleyesque’ dance routines failed to compensate for the naïve innocence of the humble
troupe that Wilson meant to portray.
I
n ‘74 and ‘75 Russell was back weirding up classical composers again with “Litzomania” and “Mahler” then, just for good measure, with the help of The Who and Elton John, we were subjected to the overlong, nonsensical story of the deaf dumb and blind kid Tommy, a travesty that the rock star cameos were unable to save.
I
n ‘77 he had the wonderful Rudolph Nureyev masquerading as Valentino, putting a horrendous black mark on an otherwise flawless career. “Gothic”took us back to 1816 where we were treated to a club footed Lord Byron creeping round his Swiss villa scaring the bejeebers out of his –among house guests whom were Percy Shelley and his wife Mary. The strange sexual happenings during this stormy night apparently inspired Mary to write Frankenstein, which seems like a walk in the park after experiencing such a house party. Mad, Bad and Dangerous to know Indeed!
“
Altered States” was a huge leap in genre, so snaps for that, but this odd tale of a Harvard scientist messing with hallucinogenic drugs and isolation chambers proved a little too much for actor William Hurt who hammed it up shamelessly. It’s a miracle it didn’t finish off his wonderful acting career before it began!
I
n all fairness to Ken Russell, he had made a multitude of films since the 1950’s and I have only seen those I have mentioned and those he is most famous for. His earlier work may well have been quite acceptable, but as clean water gathers scum as it flows down the gutter, so has his work become more contaminated as it progressed (or maybe regressed would be a better word).
I
f anyone out there knows of a Russell film that might redeem him, please enlighten me. I so believe in miracles!

Prepare to become unstuck and mobile enough to finally launch yourself in a direction that seems increasingly obvious. Avoid over-analysing or thinking things over too much as your rational mind may get the better of you - just follow the natural flow of things and it will lead you to a place you will love. Personal breakthrough and maximum growth is yours this week as you have a window of opportunity to capitalise on this wave of energy.
Something new for Christmas is always good so why shouldn’t that extend to the bird? No, not your girlfriend or wife, we’re talking turkey here! The recipe is simple and the smells coming from the oven while it’s cooking are absolutely mouth watering.
You may have a desire to force an issue and make something happen too fast before it has matured enough to be ready. A far more profitable outcome will be yours if you can exercise patience without feeling anxious about the results. As much as you may wish to break free from certain commitments, something is going to keep you on your toes for the next few weeks, for a very good reason and you will be grateful it does, as there is much yet to be revealed.
Ingredients:
The filters are off and you are beginning to see others with a fresh pair of eyes. This shift in perspective can lead to far better relations and allow you the opportunity to remove dynamics within relationships that are not fruitful or are detrimental in some way. There may be some understandable emotional unrest as you will not be able to please all parties. The truth and depth of your decision will motivate you and will feel empowering. A burst of new ideas is set to fill your being with encouraging and motivating zest. Lean on your strengths this week and energetically promote your natural gifts. This is a highly sensitive two-week window for you that will go far in removing any self-lingering doubts and eradicate a whole bunch of fears. The influences in the heavens are providing you with a liberating initiative so you can rise up and make your effective presence known. Ask and you shall receive – Leo, this week it is “wish” time for you. Just be careful that what you are wishing for is what you really want. The tripping point of this aspect is you may make a wish but not think it all the way through to the other side. In some cases something you think you want, in the end may not be at all what you were seeking to find - on the other hand, if you are mindful and patient it could turn out to be exactly what you always wanted. You so love to solve problems and that is why you excel in a crisis and do extremely well under pressure. Knowing you had a hand in completing a process makes you feel complete and at one with the universe. You could be worrying a lot and wondering how something is going to pan out and if your loved ones will behave themselves. Perhaps it is time to give yourself some space to relax, enjoy and receive?
There is so much that you have wanted to say to someone but in order to keep the peace you may have been biting your tongue – it’s a wonder that it isn’t shredded! Whatever it is that has been emotionally festering is about to blast a few doors down this week as your verbal spontaneity reaches an all-time September 23rd - high. It takes a lot of energy to hold back emotional thoughts and feelings but they are now holding you hostage – let it out, Libra. October 22nd
Orange and Maple Glazed Turkey ● 6 gr salt ● 0.5 gr ground black pepper ● 55 gr butter, softened ● 7 gr chopped fresh thyme ● 6 gr chopped fresh sage ● 1 (20 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed ● 45 ml olive oil ● 60 ml orange juice
● 120 ml maple syrup ● 235 ml chicken broth, divided ● 120 ml dry vermouth
Directions 1. Preheat an oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Grease a roasting pan. Mix the salt and pepper together in a small bowl, and set aside. 2. Stir together the butter, thyme, and sage in a small bowl. Place the turkey into the prepared roasting pan, and separate the skin from the breast through the neck cavity. Spread the butter mixture evenly over the breast, then press the skin back down on top of the butter. Brush the outside of the turkey with the olive oil, then sprinkle with the salt and pepper mixture. 3. Whisk together the orange juice, maple syrup, and half of the chicken broth, and set aside. 4. Bake the turkey in the preheated oven until no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear, about 3 hours. Baste every 30 minutes with the
maple syrup mixture. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone should read 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). 5. Remove the turkey from the oven, cover with a doubled sheet of aluminum foil, and allow to rest in a warm area 10 to 15 minutes before slicing. 6. Once the turkey has rested, remove it from the roasting pan, and place it onto a serving platter. Place the roasting pan onto the stove, and stir in the remaining chicken broth along with the vermouth. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Scrape the bottom of the roasting pan well to dissolve the browned bits, then simmer over medium-low heat until the gravy thickens, about 10 minutes total. Strain before serving with the turkey.

Beckham wins at British Fashion Awards ... and supermodel Stella Tennant, makes a fashion boob-ie! This year’s British Fashion Awards were held at the Savoy Hotel in London on Monday night.
Posh won Best Designer Brand
Former Spice Girl turned designer Victoria Beckham was over the moon at winning the Designer Brand of the Year title. After the results were announced, she was very emotional, as she beat Stella McCartney, Burberry and former Gucci and YSL director Tom Ford. In Victoria’s tearful acceptance speech, she said
"I'm so sorry for crying. This is really rubbish of me. I am so nervous, this means so much to me. Without David I wouldn't have had the courage to do what I'm doing." The British Fashion Council honoured Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen as Designer of the Year for 2011, beating the other nominees Christopher Kane and Erdem Moralioglu. Burton drew praise for designing Kate
Middleton‘s much-heralded and much-copied wedding dress. The council said Burton had “allowed McQueen’s legacy to live on while still giving her own twist of creative genius to a collection that has outshone its rivals on and off the catwalk”. The Model of the Year award went to the 40-yearold Stella Tennant who beat fellow nominees Kristen McMenamy and Georgia
Jagger. Tennant who has been in the business for over 25 years has appeared in advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein, Hermès, and Burberry and has recently been catwalking for Chanel. Unfortunately for her, she exposed a bit too much while posing for photos in the press room after winning her award. Perhaps, a camisole under that nice jacket would have saved her embarrassment!

Emporio Rihanna Winehouse Auction Gaga really gaga Rihanna the 23 year old pop star has teamed up with Emporio Armani underwear and Armani jeans for her first fashion collection. She has created a capsule collection comprising denim and lingerie featuring her R logo and the fashion house's signature label. The collection includes biker jackets, a canvas rucksack, two styles of jeans, t-shirts and lace underwear in navy blue and pearl grey shades. Rihanna explains the theme behind her collection “I probably see a lot of menswear, or
The dress worn by Amy Winehouse for the cover of her Grammy awardwinning “Back To Black” album is to be sold at auction.
In September Lady Gaga signed the licence for a new perfume and she reportedly requested that the fragrance be based on the molecular structure of blood and semen. As odd as that request was, her skincare secrets are just as unconventional.
The short chiffon design is expected to fetch up to £20,000. It will be sold alongside items worn by Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana.
something extremely, extremely feminine. But I like to play with both. It would have to be so extreme that it's a look, because I don't usually like typical ladylike, girly-girly stuff”.
Its printed bands of red polka dots are fairly simple compared to the designs of the Taylor and Hepburn dresses – but for auction house owner Kerry Taylor, the Winehouse legacy is by no means overshadowed.
The dress once worn by Amy is up for auction at the request of Thai-based designer Desiya to raise money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up in the singer's memory to support vulnerable young people across the globe.
When asked how she held onto her flawless complexion – despite her demanding lifestyle – the 25-year-old didn't list a range of face creams. While sipping a vegetable drink Gaga replied that actually she relied on “orgasms, lots of orgasms”, though eventually she conceded that the vegetable drinks
might also play a small part in her skincare regime, giving credit to both “orgasms and spinach”. Gaga who is also better known for wearing a meat dress, had something to say about fashion too. When talking about designers, she said: 'I like to wear young designers and give them a commercial platform but I am not just a hanger.' There's not much chance of anyone accusing the singer of that. Gaga is always clearly wearing the clothes rather than the other way around.

Nancy Dell’Olio is set to pick up £250,000 to pose naked for Playboy at the age of 50. The Strictly Come Dancing star is understood to be negotiating for a bigname photographer to capture her in tasteful flamenco-themed images at exotic locations. Her spokesman said: “We are in talks. Most of the terms have been agreed. The shoot could be done by Christmas. Nancy has never looked better. She is all for empowering women of any age.” Last
week Nancy told an interviewer she would pose naked for “the right publication and the right price”. Nancy’s Strictly rival

magnesium stores are in your bones. To slow down your skin’s ageing process, take vitamin C and omega-3s. Vitamin C helps protect against skin damage by fighting the free radicals that cause wrinkles and ageing, and it’s also involved in collagen production. Omega-3s give an extra glow as they're crucial to the production of your skin's natural oil, which keeps dryness and spots at bay. Tip: Never take supplements on an empty stomach – you'll just pass them out in your urine. For maximum absorption, take them with a main meal.

R. Bartrum I read with some interest the article written by Brian Cave but must disagree with the notion that UK citizens living permanently abroad should have the right to vote in UK parliamentary elections. I left the UK for North America many years ago, even before I reached voting age, and finally came here to Spain when I retired. During this time I have never felt the need or the right to
Mark Connor Tourism statistics are often reported in the press in Andalucia. As tourism is such an important industry and part of the economy it is quite common to report these figures. However, an analysis of most statistics reported in the press reveals that there is a tendency to report press releases from government organisations. These tend to highlight the optimistic figures and not to question figures that do not agree with other studies. A collection of statistics taken from a range of publications and reports by national, regional, provincial and local bodies has shown they do seem to agree. Just! Traditionally a tourist is defined as someone who travels for pleasure. This definition is now more complex as people travel for a variety of reasons. The increase in foreign residents who frequently travel abroad and within Spain must be distorting the statistics. Note: In accordance with World Tourism guidelines foreign tourists are counted as those originating from their country of residence and not by their nationality. This is significant in some areas such as the Costa del Sol where foreign nationals make up a significant proportion of the travelling population. In 2010 Andalucía received 7.4 million international tourists (ie country of residence not Spain) which was about the same as 2009. (actually 0,4% down) this was
By email vote in the country of my birth, as I had left and formed new allegiances. I suggest that if a person has left the UK to live here, they have to decide in which camp to plant their feet, to live here with one foot in each camp doesn't sit well with our Spanish hosts. Speaking with people from the UK, some give the impression that Spain is an extension of the UK and they
should be able to carry on as before, but of course it is not. If you are a registered resident here you enjoy the same rights a Spanish person does, except being able to vote only in local elections. If a campaign on voting rights is to be started, would it not be better to campaign for full voting rights here in Spain for all properly registered residents, as this is where we live?
By email down from the 2007 peak of 8.4 million and down from the last ten year average of 7.8 million. This would place Andalucia (if a country) about 25th in a world league of foreign tourist arrivals. In 2011 (Jan-Aug) Andalucia received 5.6m international tourists which was 2.2% up on a 10 year average, and 5.9% up on 2010 thanks to a strong April to June. The total international tourist spend in 2010 was 5% up on 2009 reaching 7,820 million euros with an average holiday spend per tourist of 1,052 euros and with an average stay of 11.7 nights this is an average daily spend of 89,7 euros. This holiday spending is broken down into 19.7 % on transport, 26.3 % on accommodation, 15.3% in a package holiday, 16.4% in restaurants or food and 22.3% in excursions. Those staying in hotels averaged 7.8 nights whilst those not in hotels averaged 15.8 nights. The principal arrival was via an airport at 79.8% and by road 8,2%. A minority of foreign tourists now arrive as part of a package holiday and 79.8% travelled independently in 2010.
952 443 222 see our ad on the back page
There is still a high season as 2,7million or 36% arrive in July, August or September. Main reason for coming to Andalucia according to a survey are: Climate 26%, Beach 15%, Cultural 17%, Monuments 11%, Visit Family 8%, Price 5%, Nature 8%, Other reasons 10%. This was found on an independent website andalucia.com. Now according to this tourism is up, (just), so where are these people going? As I said in the second paragraph, ¨there is a tendency to report press releases from government organisations¨. Has ANYBODY seen this slight up turn here? I have not!

Journey to Mars Last Saturday, 26th November, NASA launched its most ambitious space probe to Mars. Christened ‘Curiosity’ it is hoped it will tell us ‘Is There Life On Mars?’
C
uriosity is a large sixwheeled vehicle about the size of a jeep and weighing 1 ton. It is due to arrive at Mars in August 2012. It will parachute into the Martian atmosphere to help slow it down and as it nears the surface a platform ‘sky crane’ will use thrusters similar to the Thunderbirds to hover above the ground and gently lower the rover down to the surface. This is a very risky procedure that has never been tried before. Other landers have used inflatable air bags to bounce onto the surface.
O
nce on the surface, the nuclear powered £1.6bn rover will spend up to two years travelling more than 12 miles sampling rocks and soil. Curiosity's 2.1 metre arm has a jackhammer on the end to drill into the Martian rock and its mast carries highdefinition and laser cameras. It is equipped with a weather station that will provide temperature, wind and humidity readings; a computer app with daily weather updates is planned.
I
t is not looking for signs of life itself but instead is looking for the chemical constitutes that allow life to start. Most scientists now believe that Mars is now a lifeless planet but perhaps many millions of years ago Mars was a world more akin to Earth, with an oxygen-rich atmosphere and lakes of water.
A
n orbiting satellite called Mars Orbital Surveyor has been circling Mars since 2006 taking very highresolution photographs of the surface and has spotted evidence of water that is trapped beneath the surface. In some of the photographs it appears that during a Mars ‘summer’ some of this water has been seeping out and trickling across the surface. So there is a remote possibility that some microbial life could be living below the surface in the form of an algae type material.
B
ut Mars seems to want to keep its secrets to itself; there have been 52 missions to Mars since 1960 by both the Americans and Russians and more than half of them have ended in failure. Even the UK has sent a probe to Mars – Beagle 2 was due to land on Christmas Day 2003 and search for life but it crashed onto the Martian surface. The Chinese also had a failure in 2003 when their orbiter failed to go into orbit around Mars and instead flew off into deep space never to be
seen again. And only last month Russia launched another rocket to Mars that failed to even leave Earth orbit!
T
here have been a few successes though, in 1976 the American Viking lander was the first to touchdown successfully and send back the first pictures from another world. In 2004 two American rovers called ‘Spirit’ and ‘Opportunity’ landed safely and began exploring across the surface. Both rovers were only expected to last for around 90 days but incredibly are still working today six years later. Spirit has recently broken down but Opportunity has plodded on covering over 20 miles from its initial landing point.
E
verybody is agreed that we need to send astronauts to explore Mars but the journey is rife with problems. Going to the Moon took just four days while the trip to Mars would take almost a year to get there. Then the astronauts would have to live on the planet for at least another six months until the Earth and Mars were back in position for the return trip that would take another year. The psychological pressures on anyone being confined on a trip taking almost three years to complete would be unbearable.
A
lso with the success rate being so low there is still a massive danger in sending astronauts at this time. My prediction is that astronauts won’t land on Mars for at least another 50 years, although I hope I’m wrong!
M
ars is currently visible very early in the mornings rising at around 1.00 am just below the constellation of Leo. But I’ll give more details about it at the beginning of next year when it is better placed for viewing.

Webber finally wins in 2011 Red Bull's Mark Webber won the Brazilian Grand Prix to take his first victory of the season in the final race after Sebastian Vettel hit trouble. Vettel led from the start but ran into gearbox problems. He let Webber past and concentrated on ensuring he got to the finish in second place. McLaren's Jenson Button and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso battled for third, with Button getting past with 10 laps left. Button's team-mate Lewis Hamilton retired with a gearbox failure. The third place for Jenson Button sealed second spot in
15 pole positions from 19 grands prix.
Lewis Hamilton brought an end to his long-running feud with Felipe Massa by giving the Ferrari driver a hug after the Brazilian Grand Prix. The duo had not been on speaking terms after colliding six times this season. "It was good to have a nice chat with Felipe," said Hamilton. "I have great respect for him and I'm looking forward to racing him again next year."

US win golf world cup Benalmadena Bowls annual Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland ended the US's 11-year drought in golf's World Cup by shooting a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win by two strokes. The American pair fired six birdies in the alternateshot final round at Mission Hills Blackstone course to finish at 24-under, 264 overall, notching the 24th U.S. win in the history of the tournament.
England’s pairing of Ian Poulter and Justin Rose had the final day's best round with a 63 to tie for second at 22-under with Germany's Martin Kaymer and Alex Cejka (69). Ireland's Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell led by two strokes going into the final round but could only manage an even-par 72 to finish tied for fourth with Australia, the Netherlands and Scotland. The American victory was the first since Tiger Woods and David Duval claimed the title 11 years
ago. The event was annual up until 2009, and this year's tournament was the first in the new biennial format. "We really clicked. It's fantastic to win for the U.S.," Woodland said.
World No. 2 McIlroy was well below his best, hitting some loose shots, including a putt on the 18th which would have given Ireland a share of the runner-up cheque. The tournament favourites had a run of misfortune, including a penalty stroke on the 6th and four bogeys on the card. They shared fourth with Australia's Richard Green and Brendan Jones (69), plus Scotland's Stephen Gallacher and Martin Laird (66) and the Dutch pairing of Robert-Jan Derksen and Joost Luiten (68). Like Ireland, South Africa also had a pair of major winners who faltered England seemed well on the final day, with Charl out of contention heading Schwartzel and Louis into the final day eight Oosthuizen only able to shots off the lead, but record a 74 to quickly drop out of contention. soared into Defending contention. champions Italy, However they represented needed by Edoardo more than and one of the Francesco leading Molinari, teams to also had a falter. finalInstead it round 74 was only to finish Ireland 17th, 10 who came back to the Ian Poulter and Justin Rose came shots back. up just short on the final day field.
Paralympian regains use of legs Monique Van der Vorst, a Paralympic silver medallist in hand cycling, lost the use of her legs as a result of an operation that went wrong and an accident when she was a teenager. The 27-year-old from the Netherlands had another accident while training last year and, in an extraordinary twist, she
regained the use of her legs. She describes her unexplained recovery and her search for a new identity after being from disqualified competing in the Paralympics – which has resulted in her being offered a contract with a professional road cycling team.

This week saw the start of the Benalmadena Drawn Mens Pairs, Ladies Pairs and Drawn Triples. In a close game June and Diane just got the better of Gwen Ottley and Mary Detheridge 17 – 13. In the other semi final Mercedes Neilson and Barbara Banham took an early lead 13 – 5 but Kate Morris and Brenda Tims won 8 of the last 11 ends to run out 23 – 20 winners. 12 all but Kate and Brenda finished strongly to win the last 4 ends to beat Diane and June 19 – 14 and give Brenda her first competition win. The Mens Pairs saw 11 teams taking part. The semifinal saw Bill Gregory and Bob Baker winning a close game against Brian Todd and Gus Goodwin 16 – 14 the other semi final saw a good win from Neil Stanton and Geoff Edginton 22 – 9 over Rod Woollard and Peter Durnell. The final got under way with Geoff and Neil winning 7 of the last 8 ends with Bill and Bob picking up a 5 at the 12th end to get back to 10 – 18, but that was too little too late, Geoff and Neil
winning 26 – 14 with an end to spare. The Triples were contested by 13 teams. The semi final saw a convincing win for Colin Handley, Harry Ronald and Brian Todd 24 – 9 over Bob Baker, Norma Ewen and Greg Ellwood. Tag rugby for boys and girls On Saturday 26th November, Axarquia Rugby Club in Velez-Malaga welcomed over 30 boys and girls aged 5-11 for an introductory 90-minute training session in the game of Tag Rugby. Specially designed to introduce youngsters to the game, tag rugby is noncontact rugby which teaches the children mobility, agility, passing skills and teamwork without the risk of any injury. Each player wears a “tag” on their shorts and the object of the defending side is to pull the tag off the shorts – this constitutes a “tackle” and the player then has to pass or release the ball. Scoring a try is the same, by putting the ball down over the try line. The game is played with both boys and girls and is fast and great fun. Even professional sides now use tag rugby as a coaching tool for passing, movement, setplays and to ensure that there is no risk of any injuries
prior to matches. The coaching staff from the Axarquia Rugby Junior Squad, as well as senior first team players and U17 Colts, all turned out to help organise practice routines and mini-games. Parents and families all turned up to watch, and everyone enjoyed the experience. As a result of the success of the first two sessions, the town hall has now agreed to allow the Saturday morning lessons to continue at the Fernando Hierro stadium in Velez-Malaga, so that the club can start building the

No Monday night Long wait goes on blues for Malaga for Contador After a great three points last Monday it was a happy Monday again at La Rosaleda. Malaga 2 - 1 Villarreal Malaga made a dream start after five minutes, from a corner when Toulalan headed home from close range. All the good work was undone though when Duda gave the ball away in midfield and Ruben punished Malaga, firing home from inside the box to equalise on 12 minutes. Demichelis was then lucky not to concede a penalty as Villarreal pushed forward, but it was Malaga who went ahead again after 40 minutes. A good move found Rondon in space and his powerful shot was only parried by the Villarreal goalie Lopez and the ball fell to the influential Isco to slot home. In the second half Villarreal pressed forward
and Malaga seemed content to defend their lead. With 15 minutes left on the clock Toulalan received a harsh second yellow card and from the resulting free kick Caballero made a wonder save to keep it at 2-1. Malaga held out with 10 men for the rest of the game to gain a valuable three points. Report by: Scott Forbes

Alberto Contador will have to wait until the new year to discover if he is to be stripped of his 2010 Tour de France win after giving evidence at the end of his four-day doping hearing. Contador, who could receive a two-year ban, gave testimony at the Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing. The Spaniard tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol on the second rest day of last year's Tour. But he has maintained that the failure resulted from eating contaminated meat. The 28-year-old claims to have consumed the drug in contaminated beef, and in February the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation cleared him of a potential provisional one-year ban. But World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regards clenbuterol – a fat-burning and muscle-building

If found guilty, Contador can expect a two-year suspension from the sport and to be stripped of his 2010 Tour win and other subsequent victories. After a final day of testimony in Lausanne, Switzerland, Cas secretary general Matthieu Reeb confirmed that the rider addressed the appeals panel "for about 15 minutes". "He took the case very seriously. He was present for all the case and all the attended discussions", Reeb said. As he left the court, Contador made no comment. The result of the WADA and UCI appeal should be revealed in January 2012, Reeb confirmed.

drive for Renault (Lotus) in 2012 Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen will return to Formula 1 next season after signing a two-year deal with Renault, who will become Lotus in 2012. The 32-year-old left F1 at the end of 2009 to pursue a career in rallying. The Finn had talks with Williams about a return to F1 next season, but a deal fell through. There was confusion last week after Renault announced that Robert Kubica, who raced for the team before he was injured in a rallying accident in February, would not return to the sport next season. However, the Pole's manager told BBC Sport that Kubica was still focused on returning in 2012.

Alcott: Funding blow 'stab in back' Britain's top skier Chemmy Alcott described the withdrawal of funding for her sport as a "stab in the back" as she tries to recover from serious injury. Alcott, 29, is Britain’s only worldclass Alpine racer and was ranked eighth in the world when she suffered a horrific leg break at the Lake Louise World Cup meet in December last year. Soon afterwards government funding for Britain’s skiers was withdrawn SnowsportGB went into administration the year before, and athletes were receiving help from the BOA and UK Sport. That left Alcott, Britain’s only genuinely competitive skier, struggling to make ends meet when she needed it most.

Terry: booked on purpose England captain John Terry has set tongues wagging with a bizarre yellow card for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Terry took an age dawdling over a throw-in and referee Lee Mason booked him for timewasting. The booking was Terry's fifth of the season, triggering an automatic one-match suspension. Chelsea's next game is a Carling Cup tie against Liverpool, for which Terry may have been rested anyway, meaning he can serve his ban without missing any Premier League action.
